- 0:06Speaker 1: Hello everybody, and welcome to another edition of Cardinal Territory.
- 0:10Speaker 1: Jim Hayes, and this week we have a very special
- 0:13Speaker 1: edition of Cardinal Territory because we reunite with an old
- 0:17Speaker 1: friend spent parts of four seasons with the Cardinals, and
- 0:21Speaker 1: Cardinal fans will remember twenty eighteen, this guy hit eighteen
- 0:26Speaker 1: I'm sorry, he hit seventeen homers while batting three oh five.
- 0:31Speaker 1: Pretty pretty, pretty good. Of course it's Jose Martinez. Jose, Hello,
- 0:36Speaker 1: and thank you for coming into Cardinal Territory.
- 0:40Speaker 2: Jim. It's always good to get back to you and
- 0:45Speaker 2: h this way. And they always all Cardinal fans. They
- 0:50Speaker 2: always gonna have in my heart, so very special. Thanks
- 0:53Speaker 2: for thee for the invite.
- 0:56Speaker 1: Yeah, I think they're going to be very happy about
- 0:58Speaker 1: seeing you again. We should mention that we're talking as
- 1:01Speaker 1: you are in Venezuela. But how are you? What what's
- 1:06Speaker 1: going on in your world?
- 1:09Speaker 2: Well, it's it's a lot of stuff happening. Actually, uh,
- 1:13Speaker 2: it's been. It's been after my retirement. It's been a
- 1:16Speaker 2: lot of stuff that I'm actually doing it. I'm doing
- 1:19Speaker 2: doing some podcasts on some social media stuff and and
- 1:23Speaker 2: I'm actually working as a hitting coach here here and
- 1:27Speaker 2: uh in Venezuela with a with a new league that
- 1:30Speaker 2: is coming up. It's getting a lot of chances to
- 1:33Speaker 2: those players that they are away from baseball for some reasons.
- 1:37Speaker 2: So actually for them is very good to uh to
- 1:40Speaker 2: actually doing something or even even maintain that or or
- 1:44Speaker 2: actually trying to get back in business. Feeling pretty good
- 1:48Speaker 2: learning the process. It's always been liked out in my life.
- 1:51Speaker 2: So I'm actually enjoying life.
- 1:55Speaker 1: And I also see you're doing media stuff. I saw
- 1:58Speaker 1: on your social media you're holding a microphone, So tell
- 2:01Speaker 1: me about that, because I think that's really cool because
- 2:04Speaker 1: I remember interviewing you for the pregame show.
- 2:09Speaker 2: Well, there's something that I came up. I don't know what. Actually,
- 2:14Speaker 2: I met some guys that uh that I told me
- 2:16Speaker 2: that you might you might, you might be gonna be
- 2:19Speaker 2: pretty good at it. And I didn't know nothing about TV.
- 2:22Speaker 2: Actually actually been hanging out with a lot of good
- 2:26Speaker 2: guys and the good people that knows how to do
- 2:28Speaker 2: it like you and a lot of people, and and
- 2:31Speaker 2: you came out of nowhere. I think, uh I had
- 2:35Speaker 2: people that are knows uh In ben In ben In
- 2:38Speaker 2: in that TV stuff for a long time, and and
- 2:41Speaker 2: they helped me a lot, and they make me feel comfortable.
- 2:44Speaker 2: And you know, baseball has always been something that, uh
- 2:48Speaker 2: that I love that I play attention during my career
- 2:51Speaker 2: and actually before that. So I think I'm not gonna
- 2:55Speaker 2: say it's been easy, but it's a process that actually
- 2:58Speaker 2: is there, and and I'm actually enjoying it. And I think, uh,
- 3:02Speaker 2: your many new people, and it's a new way to
- 3:06Speaker 2: actually see baseball. So I'm enjoying it.
- 3:09Speaker 1: I gotta tell you that I remember you were always
- 3:12Speaker 1: camera friendly, like you were never intimidated by the camera,
- 3:16Speaker 1: and you have personality. I mean, that's those are the
- 3:19Speaker 1: two biggest obstacles. So I would think that you're natural
- 3:23Speaker 1: for for television and sportscasting.
- 3:27Speaker 2: I think is that I think you're right one hundred percent.
- 3:31Speaker 2: I actually enjoyed, uh, just having fun and being natural,
- 3:35Speaker 2: being normal, being humble too, and and and that's been
- 3:41Speaker 2: that's been that's been me for my whole life. So uh,
- 3:44Speaker 2: I think enjoying all the stuff that is there for
- 3:47Speaker 2: me is been a key for me. And I in
- 3:50Speaker 2: my is either in my professional career a baseball player,
- 3:53Speaker 2: and now I'm actually trying to just being busy and
- 3:58Speaker 2: all the opportunities that is out there. So, like I said,
- 4:02Speaker 2: I think it's been fun. Actually it's a process. I'm
- 4:05Speaker 2: not saying that. I'm not saying that I'm the best
- 4:08Speaker 2: at it, but I know how some people that be
- 4:10Speaker 2: there for me to help me out.
- 4:13Speaker 1: I gotta tell you, like it seems like your whole
- 4:17Speaker 1: adult life has been a journey. Ten years. You battled
- 4:21Speaker 1: in the minor leagues and playing overseas before you got
- 4:25Speaker 1: to the big leagues and Cardinal fans remember what you
- 4:27Speaker 1: did when you got there. But tell me what that
- 4:30Speaker 1: was like. Every level it seemed to hit. I remember
- 4:33Speaker 1: one year in the mind, I think you set a
- 4:36Speaker 1: record hitting three eighty four some I mean you never
- 4:38Speaker 1: got a sniff. What was that like battling through that.
- 4:42Speaker 2: Well, it's it was. It was a process. Actually, I
- 4:46Speaker 2: was in that team that my father was a big leaguer,
- 4:50Speaker 2: my family, I have family members that I was baseball
- 4:54Speaker 2: players too, and just carrying carrying over this last name
- 5:00Speaker 2: of my Martinez. It was hard in the beginning, but
- 5:03Speaker 2: and then I just just make a separation. Actually I'm
- 5:06Speaker 2: gonna I'm not. I'm not. I don't know if I
- 5:08Speaker 2: can say like that and actually separate that was my
- 5:12Speaker 2: father and what he did to what I has. I
- 5:16Speaker 2: have to accomplish for me and make my own name.
- 5:21Speaker 2: And and it was it was a journey. It was
- 5:24Speaker 2: opened down, it was injuries, it was it was it's
- 5:28Speaker 2: the process. It was pretty difficult. But I think I
- 5:33Speaker 2: have to I have to thank God for that kind
- 5:35Speaker 2: of process that I got me here right now that
- 5:37Speaker 2: I learned about the process, I learned about people, about
- 5:41Speaker 2: the game, how hard it is, how hard it can
- 5:44Speaker 2: be sometimes, and mental game, mental game it was. It
- 5:49Speaker 2: was unbelievable too because all those times actually sometimes I
- 5:54Speaker 2: have to stay for one month or two months by
- 5:57Speaker 2: myself in the complex just doing rehab, me and the
- 6:00Speaker 2: trainer and and in that kind of process again got
- 6:05Speaker 2: me the next year to like more strong, strong, not
- 6:07Speaker 2: even not even physicals use mentally. So I was trying
- 6:13Speaker 2: to do my best every single year whatever opportunity was there,
- 6:16Speaker 2: especially that year that he mentioned, uh that it wasn't
- 6:20Speaker 2: even on the rust and in spring training and it
- 6:23Speaker 2: was a pair that I was playing one time every
- 6:27Speaker 2: four four days, and then I find out I just
- 6:31Speaker 2: broke broke the record. By the end of the year,
- 6:34Speaker 2: and when everybody and I thought that was gonna get
- 6:37Speaker 2: the change, I didn't get it. So those kind of
- 6:40Speaker 2: things that happens that you cannot control. But I always
- 6:44Speaker 2: mentioned that one guy that that got me words that
- 6:48Speaker 2: I'm never gonna forget, like I think this year it
- 6:51Speaker 2: was Casey Casey catchment. I think this year is gonna
- 6:55Speaker 2: get you whatever you're gonna, You're gonna, you wanna you
- 6:58Speaker 2: wanna be. So I just went back to Venezuela and
- 7:01Speaker 2: trying to start over, and and it happened. I think
- 7:03Speaker 2: the next year Cardinals got me out of out of
- 7:07Speaker 2: free agency, or when I was DFA by the Royals,
- 7:10Speaker 2: and there is the rest is history. By help by
- 7:13Speaker 2: Mike Shield that the first team that had told me
- 7:15Speaker 2: that I know what you can do, go out then
- 7:18Speaker 2: and trying to be a good team, like a good
- 7:20Speaker 2: team that we know you you are and and soon
- 7:25Speaker 2: and also I was there playing in the big leagues
- 7:28Speaker 2: with a basic organization in.
- 7:29Speaker 3: The world godfather, I'm a last minic guy. Sometimes you're
- 7:34Speaker 3: a last minic guy where you all of a sudden
- 7:36Speaker 3: see a night open up and you want to go
- 7:38Speaker 3: grab some tickets and you hadn't gotten them. Already, So
- 7:40Speaker 3: you're gonna seek Geek, and you're gonna go look for
- 7:43Speaker 3: a green dot and see where the good seats are
- 7:45Speaker 3: and the good value is and have a little night
- 7:47Speaker 3: with the fam.
- 7:48Speaker 4: Right without a doubt. And I'm looking for some of
- 7:51Speaker 4: the best seats. I'm looking for that green dot. When
- 7:53Speaker 4: I get that, it's a simple plug it in, use
- 7:56Speaker 4: your hands, go right on your screen, your phone, whatever
- 8:00Speaker 4: platform you can get it on. And it's so simple.
- 8:02Speaker 4: They make it so easy for you to do. Even
- 8:06Speaker 4: my son can do it if I asked him, Hey, Blikester,
- 8:08Speaker 4: let's go, man, get on there for us, find us
- 8:10Speaker 4: a couple of seats so we can watch even that
- 8:12Speaker 4: Subway series. That would be fantastic. Seat Geek has it
- 8:15Speaker 4: all there for you.
- 8:16Speaker 3: Yeah, and the code for you. You should know it.
- 8:19Speaker 3: It's Territory ten. It just gets you ten percent off
- 8:21Speaker 3: your next set of tickets. That's ten percent off any
- 8:23Speaker 3: tickets with promo code Territory one zero. Make sure you
- 8:26Speaker 3: click the link in the description, download the app. Then
- 8:29Speaker 3: the code is automatically added to your council.
- 8:30Speaker 1: You can use it later and posting good numbers too.
- 8:34Speaker 1: Take me back to that first game with the Cardinals, Right, Like,
- 8:38Speaker 1: what was that like? After you battled and battled and
- 8:41Speaker 1: battled to get to that point and there you are
- 8:44Speaker 1: in a big league uniform, playing in front of a
- 8:46Speaker 1: lot of folks who are rabid baseball fans.
- 8:50Speaker 2: He was unbelievable. I don't think from now, even though
- 8:53Speaker 2: oose gears that have been through have been passed, I
- 8:59Speaker 2: feel the same talk about it. It's just because I
- 9:03Speaker 2: worked so hard. Uh, it's so much stuff happened to
- 9:07Speaker 2: me to make me quit, actually and use it was
- 9:12Speaker 2: always somebody or someone that it wasn't the phone, and
- 9:16Speaker 2: it was my mouth, always like good things gonna happen.
- 9:19Speaker 2: Keep working, Uh, keep your mental, keep your mental, your mind,
- 9:24Speaker 2: your mind strong. Actually, And but that day I used
- 9:29Speaker 2: what was I was working to the to the to
- 9:33Speaker 2: the field and leaving all the process that actually enjoyed
- 9:37Speaker 2: a thousand percent. I didn't sleep that night. I actually
- 9:42Speaker 2: I walked through the Roman Roberto Clemente Bridge, and I
- 9:47Speaker 2: took so much pictures and stuff that that actually was unbelievable.
- 9:50Speaker 2: But I was first bad. It was like I couldn't
- 9:54Speaker 2: I couldn't believe because there was so much stuff that
- 9:57Speaker 2: happened to me. That I couldn't believe I was there.
- 9:59Speaker 2: But over over that I met I think the best
- 10:03Speaker 2: teammates on the word Yaddy Way, No Carlos Gyro Munoz.
- 10:08Speaker 2: It was so much good players that it was in
- 10:10Speaker 2: that cluehouse by that time that it made me better
- 10:14Speaker 2: and trying to trying to always every day trying to
- 10:17Speaker 2: learn about about that level, about the process and stuff.
- 10:21Speaker 2: So I was lucky to God that at that time
- 10:26Speaker 2: with those kind of players that it wasn't that clohouse for.
- 10:28Speaker 1: A Cardinal fans love their players, There's no question. There's
- 10:34Speaker 1: certain guys that they latch onto for some reason. And
- 10:38Speaker 1: you were a fan favorite. What are your feelings about
- 10:42Speaker 1: Cardinal fans and the way they embraced you.
- 10:46Speaker 2: I think, uh, they they make me better. Actually, they
- 10:50Speaker 2: make me have fun. They gave me that opportunity to
- 10:53Speaker 2: be me to to interact with them on some ways.
- 10:58Speaker 2: I was actually chatting with everybody by by Instagram when
- 11:03Speaker 2: I was going to the to the stores and everything.
- 11:08Speaker 2: I was there talking to them like I know them
- 11:10Speaker 2: from a long time. So that kind of fan base
- 11:14Speaker 2: get you because they make me, they make you feel comfortable,
- 11:18Speaker 2: even though it's a battle that you're gonna go up
- 11:21Speaker 2: there and perform, for sure, hundred percent. I felt like
- 11:26Speaker 2: they was. They always was there. The support was there
- 11:31Speaker 2: all the bad times, even though even though they don't
- 11:35Speaker 2: believe it, it was tough times sometimes and and they
- 11:38Speaker 2: was there giving me, giving me that that how do
- 11:43Speaker 2: you say, like family stuff Like, I feel like they
- 11:47Speaker 2: was there more than nobody. So even every time I
- 11:53Speaker 2: was in that lineup, of course I'm gonna do it
- 11:56Speaker 2: for me, for my family, but I feel like there
- 11:58Speaker 2: was my family too be it was so much love,
- 12:01Speaker 2: so much, so much good energy and positive things that
- 12:08Speaker 2: it made me better to do uh, to do on
- 12:12Speaker 2: work hard every day for them.
- 12:15Speaker 1: If you think back to your time as a cardinal,
- 12:17Speaker 1: was there one moment that sticks with you when you
- 12:20Speaker 1: think about that time, Maybe that's the moment you think
- 12:23Speaker 1: about more than others.
- 12:27Speaker 2: There was two moments actually, that moment that I hit
- 12:29Speaker 2: my first home run and then I actually didn't make
- 12:35Speaker 2: a play and we lost about it. That's one that's
- 12:38Speaker 2: one moment that I always always got not gonna forget,
- 12:41Speaker 2: because there's there's moments, especially in baseball, that you actually
- 12:46Speaker 2: can enjoy and feel comfortable about it, and then soon enough,
- 12:50Speaker 2: everything can change. And that gave me a good, good lesson.
- 12:54Speaker 2: So after that, I feel like I was on top
- 12:57Speaker 2: of the world. Said I hit my home, first home
- 13:00Speaker 2: in the big leagues, blah blah blah, and they sooner
- 13:02Speaker 2: knows everything changed. And it was we all the media
- 13:05Speaker 2: actually what happened in that play because we lost that game,
- 13:08Speaker 2: and and it was a process and the second and
- 13:11Speaker 2: the second uh uh, it was that time when we clinch,
- 13:15Speaker 2: when we clinch against against the Braves, I think, I
- 13:20Speaker 2: remember when Mike Shild told me to game, gave that
- 13:24Speaker 2: speech that I always remember, and and we with that
- 13:29Speaker 2: clue house, with all those veteran guys and the feudals,
- 13:32Speaker 2: hall of famers, me talking to everybody, uh saying that
- 13:38Speaker 2: we can't actually get to the World Series and win it.
- 13:40Speaker 2: It was amazing for me. It was kind of those
- 13:43Speaker 2: moments that you never forget.
- 13:46Speaker 1: There is such a baseball tradition in your country in Venezuela,
- 13:51Speaker 1: all the all the great names that that have played there.
- 13:57Speaker 1: I'm thinking, like one, I'm an old guy, so I
- 13:59Speaker 1: think Luis Paricio, Santana, Cabrera, I mean, there's a ton
- 14:04Speaker 1: of them. What's the baseball culture like in your country,
- 14:09Speaker 1: like are you when you walk around do people stop
- 14:11Speaker 1: you and ask you for autographs? What tell me about
- 14:15Speaker 1: what it's like being you there?
- 14:18Speaker 2: Is it's kinda like Saint Louis. It's that passion for baseball,
- 14:24Speaker 2: is that passion for the player for history you like
- 14:28Speaker 2: you mentioned they become session and Louis a Parisio manior,
- 14:34Speaker 2: doin Is, Miguel Cabrera. There's so much players that that
- 14:39Speaker 2: you always mentioned, and you think that they're from Venezuela
- 14:43Speaker 2: and they they actually glorious, they hall of famous here.
- 14:46Speaker 2: Whatever happens. So for me, I always go out there
- 14:49Speaker 2: and they always stop me. They always talk to me,
- 14:53Speaker 2: especially right here when I when I'm working right now
- 14:57Speaker 2: in Maracai. That after I got traded for the team
- 15:01Speaker 2: that my father always played, I felt like I start
- 15:06Speaker 2: over and start from zero, and and and these fans
- 15:09Speaker 2: right here, they they gave they gave me, and they
- 15:12Speaker 2: showed me so much love and and and and support
- 15:16Speaker 2: that it was amazing. Every time, every every everywhere I go,
- 15:20Speaker 2: I always like talk to like like like it's normal,
- 15:23Speaker 2: like people here respect you. People people here, even though
- 15:28Speaker 2: if if I'm Jose Martinez or it's someone that actually
- 15:32Speaker 2: didn't get to the big list or something. People here,
- 15:35Speaker 2: uh play attention to that and and and support all
- 15:38Speaker 2: the stuff, especially right now that that we want the
- 15:41Speaker 2: World Baseball classes man. And it's been it's been amazing.
- 15:45Speaker 2: Actually we actually step out from from all the expectations
- 15:51Speaker 2: and stuff, and and it was a great time from
- 15:54Speaker 2: our country and and we enjoy I think, uh, I
- 15:57Speaker 2: think that that process of basically is gonna be better
- 16:01Speaker 2: year by year.
- 16:03Speaker 1: So earlier you mentioned your dad, Carlos major league player.
- 16:10Speaker 1: I'm just wondering what impact did he have on you
- 16:13Speaker 1: to get you to where you are now, to being
- 16:17Speaker 1: a former major leaguer yourself, and also the pressure that
- 16:21Speaker 1: that came along with that.
- 16:24Speaker 2: Actually it's it's it's a pressure being a son of
- 16:27Speaker 2: a big leaguer, being a son of a someone that
- 16:30Speaker 2: everybody respects. Even even I felt like it was hard.
- 16:38Speaker 2: Next to him, he always wanted the best for me. Uh.
- 16:42Speaker 2: Sometimes he was talking with the scouseor and and stuff
- 16:47Speaker 2: that he's not gonna play baseball, he's going to go
- 16:49Speaker 2: to school or whatever, and I wanted a chance to
- 16:52Speaker 2: us to play. But by now and on, year by year,
- 16:57Speaker 2: I realized that he he was right about it because
- 17:02Speaker 2: he knew that this blood is because of him, and
- 17:06Speaker 2: I always gonna gonna be a bothering about my fuderal
- 17:10Speaker 2: and what I wanted to do in life, so especially
- 17:13Speaker 2: in baseball. He knew I was I was gonna follow
- 17:17Speaker 2: his steps. So it was hard. He passes away in
- 17:22Speaker 2: in in the process was a little easier, but all
- 17:26Speaker 2: the expectations was that they were they were really really high.
- 17:31Speaker 2: So like I said before, I had to separate that
- 17:35Speaker 2: because he was he was an amazing player man out
- 17:40Speaker 2: of Venezuela. They were saying that he was best tools
- 17:44Speaker 2: in so many years and I never seen so much
- 17:48Speaker 2: good tools out of the player from my from nobody else.
- 17:52Speaker 2: So it was like after that, the people that always
- 17:59Speaker 2: met or tell him that was, hey, you fight did
- 18:03Speaker 2: this for me? You fight I did this for for
- 18:06Speaker 2: for for me in this situation, and it was it
- 18:12Speaker 2: was a challenge, but I think I think when good,
- 18:15Speaker 2: but I never started working.
- 18:18Speaker 1: Aside from being the son of Carlos, I'm sure he
- 18:23Speaker 1: passed along a lot of knowledge to you. Tell me
- 18:26Speaker 1: about what you learned from him as a youngster that
- 18:29Speaker 1: kind of shaped your your career.
- 18:33Speaker 2: Actually my my pops was It wasn't that kind of
- 18:37Speaker 2: father that he always tells you something. I think the
- 18:41Speaker 2: way he did it, he was just showing you the
- 18:45Speaker 2: character and all the stuff that you actually can actually
- 18:51Speaker 2: take this stuff. Like if I'm going to the field
- 18:54Speaker 2: with him, he's talking with another player and I'm there listening,
- 18:59Speaker 2: and he's telling them adises and I'm there listening. So
- 19:05Speaker 2: he showed me this because that's the way he did
- 19:10Speaker 2: it when when he was on his time. So I
- 19:14Speaker 2: think what was the best time for me and all
- 19:18Speaker 2: the players or the people that helped Soon enough I
- 19:22Speaker 2: actually play with them or against them or there was.
- 19:28Speaker 2: They were my coaches and stuff. So it was a
- 19:31Speaker 2: conversation that they actually told me. Hey, my father to
- 19:36Speaker 2: father one time told me this and blah blah blah.
- 19:39Speaker 2: So I was actually okay, cool, you know. So it's
- 19:45Speaker 2: a good thing that those kind of players that my
- 19:48Speaker 2: father helped bow actually was a big, big time helpers
- 19:54Speaker 2: for me too. So I think that's the way it
- 19:56Speaker 2: was with him.
- 19:59Speaker 3: Hey, this is the man Mack Weldon line that resonates

- 20:59Speaker 1: I know you have a sun and a daughter. I
- 21:01Speaker 1: hear that the son is a pretty good baseball player.
- 21:04Speaker 1: Tell me what kind of dad you are. Tell me
- 21:07Speaker 1: what what you're like around the house with your kids.
- 21:11Speaker 2: I think a support. I mean that kind of support
- 21:15Speaker 2: or whatever they want to do, I'm gonna be there.
- 21:19Speaker 2: I think if my son or my daughter wants to
- 21:23Speaker 2: be uh, my daughter wants to be a lawyer, I'm
- 21:26Speaker 2: gonna try to support because she wants to be a lawyer.
- 21:30Speaker 2: Is my my my son doaughn't want to doesn't want
- 21:32Speaker 2: to be a baseball player. I want to be there
- 21:34Speaker 2: for whatever he wants to do. I think as soon
- 21:38Speaker 2: as I'm on the field with him or working out
- 21:42Speaker 2: with him, remind me that that kind of process. I
- 21:48Speaker 2: didn't get that kind of process as much. That's as
- 21:52Speaker 2: he's living with me. So I'm just trying to teach
- 21:55Speaker 2: him the stuff besides based or besides the normal stuff,
- 22:03Speaker 2: because you learn more from the outsides, like how life
- 22:08Speaker 2: it is, how how things are in the world. So
- 22:12Speaker 2: you have to play attention with that first always. Of course,
- 22:15Speaker 2: I want to I want him to to to to
- 22:19Speaker 2: make make it to the big leaks. I want him
- 22:21Speaker 2: to be successful, but it's going to be a long
- 22:24Speaker 2: and hard heart and complicated process. And and I just
- 22:28Speaker 2: want to try to tell them that you have to
- 22:33Speaker 2: use be you and and thrust the process, and and
- 22:37Speaker 2: and enjoy whatever you want to do in life because
- 22:42Speaker 2: some some some parents or fathers or or or whatever,
- 22:47Speaker 2: they're just trying to force stuff just because they want
- 22:50Speaker 2: to do or whatever they want to do. For me,
- 22:53Speaker 2: I just want him to have fun, and he's doing it,
- 22:56Speaker 2: and he does it every single time. I think I
- 22:59Speaker 2: never seen my my son getting mad about a strike out,
- 23:03Speaker 2: a strike out or something. He just has form and
- 23:06Speaker 2: I think he's I think it's his joy. He just
- 23:10Speaker 2: he just brings so much joy so for his teammates
- 23:13Speaker 2: and and the people that are watching play. That is amazing.
- 23:16Speaker 2: That makes me not make me happy. I don't care
- 23:19Speaker 2: if he strike out four times. I don't care if
- 23:22Speaker 2: it doesn't do well. Sometimes I just want him to
- 23:26Speaker 2: go to the process that is so difficult and hard
- 23:29Speaker 2: that it being a baseball player. The first thing I
- 23:32Speaker 2: told just half from first and then trying to get
- 23:35Speaker 2: his after. So so that's one thing I always I
- 23:40Speaker 2: always tell.
- 23:42Speaker 1: You know, when I hear you talk about your kids
- 23:45Speaker 1: and stuff, you strike me as someone who should be coaching.
- 23:48Speaker 1: Now that's not to say you can't be certainly a
- 23:51Speaker 1: better reporter than I am. That's most people that are
- 23:53Speaker 1: in the business. But you mentioned some about possibly being
- 23:57Speaker 1: a hitting coach or somewhere. Is that any future do
- 24:00Speaker 1: you think? What do you what do you think the
- 24:01Speaker 1: future holds for you?
- 24:04Speaker 2: I think I'm I'm one guy that I don't I don't.
- 24:08Speaker 2: I don't like to wait for the future. I like
- 24:10Speaker 2: to be ready for whatever opportunity. Of course, I love
- 24:15Speaker 2: being around baseball. I would love to keep keep this.
- 24:20Speaker 2: Uh I'm gonna say, keep keep myself in this in
- 24:25Speaker 2: this area, you know. And I love to to just
- 24:31Speaker 2: relay this knowledge that so much good players like Yady
- 24:36Speaker 2: like way no, like I mentioned, they gave me bad
- 24:39Speaker 2: that time. So I like, I learned so much about
- 24:42Speaker 2: the game that I feel like I have to I
- 24:45Speaker 2: have to throw it out. So that was that is
- 24:48Speaker 2: happening right now. And and I'm actually doing hitting coaching
- 24:52Speaker 2: stuff here and and it's a joint team that actually
- 24:57Speaker 2: was the perfect perfect fit for me because it just
- 25:01Speaker 2: some some young players that probably don't take uh their
- 25:08Speaker 2: job serious. So I always tell them in a pretty
- 25:13Speaker 2: good way that you have to do stuff better to
- 25:15Speaker 2: get better or different. It's stuff different to get better.
- 25:19Speaker 2: You here, for a reason, you probably didn't make it.
- 25:22Speaker 2: You probably got released because of something, But I don't
- 25:26Speaker 2: care about that. I think you got to show up
- 25:29Speaker 2: with a work ethic and you're trying to get better
- 25:32Speaker 2: every day and compete. I always tell them to compete
- 25:35Speaker 2: out there, and and they actually doing it. It's gave me.
- 25:40Speaker 2: It gave me goosebumps because every time I watch them,
- 25:42Speaker 2: how to how to do business and how they compete
- 25:46Speaker 2: is something that I always always wanted to feel, you know,
- 25:49Speaker 2: something that you can relate and get back and some success,
- 25:54Speaker 2: you know, and and if if it's some some way
- 25:57Speaker 2: there to to be in a in the organization that
- 26:01Speaker 2: he gave me the chance to coach, I was gonna
- 26:03Speaker 2: be hundred percent and now we accepted with all my heart.
- 26:07Speaker 2: So whatever it is, like you said, if it's something
- 26:11Speaker 2: out there for me an opportunity, I always gonna take
- 26:13Speaker 2: it up bout it. But I wanted. I wanted to
- 26:16Speaker 2: get to get in the in the line of professional
- 26:20Speaker 2: baseball as as a coach. But let's see what's going
- 26:23Speaker 2: on in.
- 26:23Speaker 1: The feuduer you mentioned Yadi. So Yadi during home games
- 26:30Speaker 1: is in the dugout with the Cardinals as an advisor.
- 26:33Speaker 1: He wants to manage in the big leagues. What do
- 26:36Speaker 1: you think of the idea of Yadi being a big
- 26:38Speaker 1: league manager.
- 26:40Speaker 2: I think it's uh, I'm waiting for that. Actually, I
- 26:44Speaker 2: don't know. I don't know why he's taking so much.
- 26:49Speaker 2: I think, uh, I've been watching him. It's been winning
- 26:52Speaker 2: whatever he goes like always, and I'm always happy for
- 26:56Speaker 2: him because it's someone is someone that he always want
- 27:01Speaker 2: to win. He always wanted to win, don't matter what's
- 27:03Speaker 2: the situation, don't matter if the ads is against him.
- 27:08Speaker 2: He always there to to compete and win. And and
- 27:12Speaker 2: I think he's going to be an amazing manager. Especially
- 27:16Speaker 2: I've been watching him too and follow him everywhere everywhere
- 27:19Speaker 2: he goes. So I'm actually pretty happy for him and
- 27:25Speaker 2: proud because even though just because his career, Molina is
- 27:30Speaker 2: who who's not going to be proud of him, But
- 27:34Speaker 2: I think as a as a friend, as a friend,
- 27:37Speaker 2: he's been he's been doing so much good stuff in
- 27:41Speaker 2: baseball and advisor and managing and taking people together to
- 27:47Speaker 2: actually be good or be enough to actually compete out
- 27:52Speaker 2: there is amazing. So those those are the persons that
- 27:55Speaker 2: I know. A big fan of House Egigeon, a big
- 27:59Speaker 2: fan of UH, of a lot of managers, but I
- 28:02Speaker 2: think I'm fin on him already, and how he he
- 28:07Speaker 2: control the stuff, and how he managed, how he's charactered. Uh,
- 28:12Speaker 2: I'm managing the team. I think he's going to be amazing.
- 28:16Speaker 1: Last thing before we let you go, I mentioned you
- 28:19Speaker 1: were very popular with the fans. You were the guy
- 28:21Speaker 1: that made fun of me for driving a stock cheap,
- 28:24Speaker 1: which I still do stock cheap because I'm an old man.
- 28:28Speaker 1: I'm not going to get it checked, not to say
- 28:33Speaker 1: it's a newer one. I always get a newer it's.
- 28:36Speaker 2: Black, oh black blue color, but blue color.
- 28:41Speaker 1: Okay, but but nice tires, but no lights, no flash.
- 28:46Speaker 2: It's stock So come on, come on man.
- 28:52Speaker 1: All right, here's my question. We hope to see it
- 28:56Speaker 1: in Saint Louis at some point back at the stadium
- 28:59Speaker 1: so fans can and say hi. But there's gonna be
- 29:02Speaker 1: fans watching this, so I'm gonna give you a chance.
- 29:05Speaker 1: What would you say to the Cardinal fans that are
- 29:07Speaker 1: watching now to show them that you appreciate how they
- 29:12Speaker 1: appreciated you.
- 29:15Speaker 2: For all Cardinal fans, I think you treat my family,
- 29:20Speaker 2: you treat my friends, you treat me as one of
- 29:24Speaker 2: you guys, And I always gonna be grateful for that,
- 29:29Speaker 2: because you gave me the energy, you gave me the
- 29:31Speaker 2: confidence to go out there and compete. Ever for you, guys,
- 29:35Speaker 2: I think whenever I win, my family and everything, it
- 29:40Speaker 2: was class sacked. So I hope to go back and
- 29:46Speaker 2: sad Lewis sometimes and and and be out there and
- 29:50Speaker 2: that alm affair that it was and is amazing around
- 29:55Speaker 2: that stadium, around the Bopa village is an energy that
- 30:01Speaker 2: no one can actually match. So I want to tell
- 30:06Speaker 2: you guys, I miss you guys so much, and I
- 30:08Speaker 2: hope for sure to see you soon.
- 30:13Speaker 1: That's awesome. We hope we see in Saint Louis at
- 30:15Speaker 1: some point, but it was great catching up with you
- 30:18Speaker 1: and uh and thanks for making time for us today.
- 30:22Speaker 2: Thanks Jim, and I think you have to put some
- 30:24Speaker 2: rents on you, Jip please.
- 30:27Speaker 1: Never never, my friend Jose Martinez. That's gonna do it
- 30:32Speaker 1: for this episode. We'll see it for the next edition.
- 30:35Speaker 1: Hopefully that one won't suck.
