- 0:31Clay woman killed on parkway, Leslie County. A Clay County
- 0:37woman was killed Saturday evening in Leslie County when the
- 0:42vehicle she was driving struck the rear of a parked
- 0:46commercial truck after entering a closed section of roadway. According
- 0:51to Kentucky State Police, the fatal crash was one of
- 0:57two deadly collisions investigating by KSP in Leslie County on
- 1:02July twenty fifth that claimed a total of three lives.
- 1:08Troopers said the first collision occurred at approximately two point
- 1:14fifty four PM when a Kentucky State Police trooper came
- 1:18upon a two vehicle crash near mile marker thirty seven
- 1:23on the Hal Rogers Parkway. According to the preliminary investigation,
- 1:29a red Nissan Juke was traveling westbound when it crossed
- 1:34the center lane into the eastbound lane and collided head
- 1:41on with a Ford Expedition. A passenger in the Ford Expedition,
- 1:48sixty four year old Penny Isen, died later at the hospital.
- 1:55The driver of the Nissan Juke, seventeen year old Tagging,
- 2:00was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the
- 2:05Ford Expedition and a juvenile passenger were airlifted to the
- 2:10University of Kentucky Medical Center for treatment. While emergency responders
- 2:16and investigators were working the scene of the first crash,
- 2:19a second fatal collision occurred nearby at approximately seven to
- 2:25forty three pm. Kentucky State Police set a gray Chevrolet
- 2:29Traverse driven by forty two year old Tracy Whittymore of
- 2:36Clay County, traveled through an established roadway closure and struck
- 2:41the rear of a parked commercial vehicle. Whittymore was pronounced
- 2:47dead at the scene by the Leslie County Coroner's Office.
- 2:51Both collisions remained under investigation by Kentucky State Police. Next
- 2:58article Stiver's wind I will not seek governor's office. Manchester
- 3:04Senate President Robert Stivers announced Monday that he will not
- 3:09seek Kentucky's governorship in twenty twenty seven, saying his commitment
- 3:17remains to serving the people of the twenty fifth Senate
- 3:21District and continuing his work in the Kentucky Senate. In
- 3:26a statement released Monday, the Manchester Republican said he reached
- 3:31the decision after consulting with his family, friends, and trusted advisers.
- 3:39I am deeply grateful for the encouragement and confidence so
- 3:44many Kentuckians have shown by asking me to consider running
- 3:49for governor in twenty twenty seven, Stiver said, after thoughtful
- 3:54discussions with my family, friends, and trusted advisers, I have
- 3:58decided that my calling remains where it has always been,
- 4:02as the Senator from Clay County, proudly representing the people
- 4:08of Kentucky's twenty fifth Senate District. Stuyvers, who has served
- 4:15in the Kentucky Senate since nineteen ninety seven and has
- 4:19been Senate presidents since twenty thirteen, said public service has
- 4:26never been about seeking higher office, but about advancing policies
- 4:31that strengthen Kentucky. For me, public service has never been
- 4:37about seeking another title, he said, it has been about
- 4:41advancing sound public policy that improves lives, strengthens our economy,
- 4:48and leaves Kentucky better for it. He also expressed his
- 4:53desire to continue serving as Senate President, pending the support
- 4:58of his Republican colleagues. Quote I am hopeful my colleagues
- 5:03will entrust me with another term as Senate President so
- 5:08we can continue building on the conservative policies that has
- 5:13transformed Kentucky into one of the nation's strongest fiscal and
- 5:18economic success stories unquote. Steivers said he credited the General
- 5:29Assembily with lowering taxes, balancing budgets, stabilizing the state's pension systems,
- 5:36strengthening Kentucky's budget reserve trust Fund, and investing in education
- 5:41and infrastructure. Looking ahead to the twenty twenty seven gubernatorial election,
- 5:48Steivers said he is committed to working with Kentucky's next
- 5:52governor and emphasized the importance of cooperation between the executive
- 5:59and legislative branches. Quote I look forward to working with
- 6:04Kentucky's next governor, one who views the General Assembly as
- 6:08an equal branch of government and a true governing partner. Quote,
- 6:13he said, quote Kentucky deserves leadership that chooses collaboration over confrontation,
- 6:21and solutions over political theater unquote. Stuivers concluded by saying
- 6:30that while he was not he will not pursue the
- 6:33governor's office. He believes there is still important work to
- 6:38accomplish in the Senate. Quote, the work of moving Kentucky
- 6:42forward is far from finished, and I remain committed to
- 6:46doing that work in the Kentucky Senate unquote. He said
- 6:50his announcement in speculation that he would enter the twenty
- 6:56twenty seven gubernatorial race, and confirms his intention to continue
- 7:01representing the twenty fifth Senate district, which includes Clay Laurel, Jackson, Owsley,
- 7:09and Whitley Counties, while seeking another term as Leader of
- 7:14the Kentucky Senate. Next article. Pastor ken Bolan leaves lasting
- 7:20legacy after thirty six years at Manchester Baptist Manchester. Ken
- 7:27Bolan retired last Sunday after pastoring Manchester Baptist Church for
- 7:33thirty six years, leaving behind many wonderful memories of the
- 7:38Lord's blessings cuffled coupled with reminders of how the church
- 7:43has loved him and his late wife so well. While
- 7:48Sunday will be his last day there as pastor, he
- 7:52preached his final sermon last Sunday using Philippians one to three.
- 8:00I chose to tell the church goodbye by saying thank you.
- 8:06Manchester Baptist Church is a great church. It pains me
- 8:11to leave, but I don't have the energy and strength
- 8:15to do what they deserve, said Bowlin sixty eight. The
- 8:19church will honor him Sunday and have a fellowship and
- 8:23meal afterwards. Retirement comes three years later than he had planned.
- 8:30In twenty twenty three, he and his wife Carol moved
- 8:33to Richmond to be close to the grandchildren. We were
- 8:40weeks away from retirement, he said, but his wife had
- 8:44a gallbladder issue. She had surgery about three weeks before
- 8:49the retirement date, and although it went well, the next
- 8:52day serious complications developed. It was then learned she had
- 8:59pancreatic care answer. I was on my way out as
- 9:04pastor when she got cancer. But the church said, let
- 9:08us minister to you and Carol. It's a great church,
- 9:13and they ministered to us so well. She passed away
- 9:17September twenty ninth, twenty twenty five, the same day we
- 9:22arrived at Manchester, thirty five years to the day. The
- 9:26church loved us and held on to us. I wasn't
- 9:30in the pulpit for a month, but they were gracious
- 9:33and helped me. They stayed with me to get my
- 9:36feet on the ground. Boland said that COVID really heard
- 9:41our church. We had God's Closet for a long time.
- 9:46It was a labor of love, but was a labor
- 9:51intensive ministry. It operated a homeless shelter, food pantry and
- 9:57clothing center, and when whenever hurricane struck other areas of
- 10:02the country, the church was diligent to donate supplies for
- 10:06relief efforts. For about ten years, the church distributed a
- 10:14free coat to every school aged child in Clay County.
- 10:19That was a brand new coat to every child and
- 10:22was a huge financial blessing to those families. We have
- 10:27about twenty five hundred to three thousand school aged children
- 10:32in the county. This has been a loving and helping church.
- 10:40I'm praying they'll get a good pastor and he will
- 10:44have his own calling. I am excited for the church
- 10:49and I think God will bless them with the good Man.
- 10:55A memorable example of the support Bolan has had over
- 10:59the year years came early and his pastorate in Manchester.
- 11:05I was baptized by fire, he said. I was barely
- 11:08thirty years old and only been there three weeks. When
- 11:12Governor Burt Combs drowned. His family were members of the church,
- 11:19and I was asked to preach his funeral. I spent
- 11:22a half day on the phone taking calls from dignitaries
- 11:26who were planning to attend. I was just a little
- 11:30nobody and felt intimidated. But one of his deacons met
- 11:35him at the door and saw he was troubled, asking
- 11:39what was wrong. I said, surely they could find someone
- 11:43else to do this funeral. The deacon was Charles Keith,
- 11:48who then advised they put their pants on the same
- 11:52way you do, you go and preach the gospel. The
- 11:57deacon who encouraged him died Thursday, and Bolan preached his
- 12:03funeral on Monday. Prior to Manchester, Boland had been a
- 12:09bi vocational pastor at Welfare Baptist Church while in college,
- 12:16then pastored Nortonville Baptist Church a total of seven years.
- 12:21Reflecting on his call to Manchester, he said, I guess
- 12:26the reason God brought me here was the terrible drug
- 12:31problem in Clay County about twenty five years ago, and
- 12:35the Lexington Herald Leader mentioned it was the drug capital
- 12:40of Kentucky. There were a lot of overdoses a young
- 12:44girl came to our church youth group and her mom
- 12:47was a drug addict. We began to minister to them,
- 12:51and I tried to get her mom into rehab to
- 12:53get help. But her mom died of an overdose and
- 12:58I had her funeral on Chris miss Eve two thousand
- 13:02and three. He said, addressing the severe problem was necessary
- 13:09for quote, for this entire generation unquote. He and a
- 13:14Pentecostal pastor prayed together and asked what God would have
- 13:19them do. Quote. We had a vision to rally the
- 13:23community to march not against drug addicts, but against illegal drugs.
- 13:30There were four thousand people who showed up from a
- 13:33community of barely thirteen hundred people. We had a rally
- 13:38in the park and it got the attention of Congressman
- 13:41Hal Rogers. As a result of God laying that on
- 13:45our hearts, we got a federal grant to build a
- 13:49two million dollar rehab center, Chad's Hope Center. A lot
- 13:54of guys there will be singing in our church on Sunday.
- 13:58For me, that was the high. The church was right
- 14:02in the middle of all that. The church struck stuck
- 14:05with me through a lot of trying times, from threats,
- 14:09by drug dealers, but the church was not afraid. It persevered.
- 14:16Before then, there were no rehab centers in the mountains,
- 14:20and churches had no celebrate recovery programs. There was little
- 14:26attention to that issue. But now about every church has
- 14:30some sort of recovery ministry. One lasting memory that Bolan
- 14:37of his late wife is her commitment to minister in Cuba.
- 14:41For twenty three years she carried on a ministry started
- 14:45there by her father. She was almost bedfast when one
- 14:50day she said she wanted to go to Cuba one
- 14:52more time. Bowen said, when she was healthy, we need
- 14:57two to three days to recover from a trip there.
- 15:00I said, we are not going, and she started to cry.
- 15:05Against the advice of her doctor, they went anyway. That
- 15:10was in March of twenty twenty five. Quote. It was
- 15:14a tough, tough trip and she had excruciating pain at night,
- 15:21but she enjoyed herself as much as she could and
- 15:25was able to say goodbye to the people she discipled.
- 15:30Bowen is one of Oneita Baptist Institute's most ardent supporters supporters,
- 15:36serving as a trustee for thirty years. Quote. Our church
- 15:42always leads to state in giving we give until it
- 15:46hurts because we believe in Obi's mission. I've known all
- 15:54Obi's presidents since nineteen ninety and I'm amazed at Larry
- 15:59Grittin's leadership. God has prepared and placed him precisely where
- 16:04he is. I've been all around the world to preach
- 16:09and do mission work. Been to fifteen countries preaching and
- 16:14starting churches, including one in Ukraine in nineteen ninety four,
- 16:19which is vastly larger than our church. But I have
- 16:23never seen a ministry as effective and as faithful and
- 16:27faith oriented as Obi. They have no budget, They absolutely
- 16:32depend on God for every day and everything. The Bolans
- 16:37adopted a daughter from Haiti who went to school at Obi.
- 16:42She is now a nurse in British Columbia, moving there
- 16:46because of immigration issues rather than return to Haiti. In retirement,
- 16:53Bolan is looking forward to spending time with his three
- 16:56rambunctious grandsons, Gideon, Paul and Silas, who lived next door
- 17:02to him. Boland's other daughter, Amanda Varney, is expecting her
- 17:07fourth child in February. News of that new addition to
- 17:12the family was made to the three boys when they
- 17:15were preparing for a vacation Bible school and saw four
- 17:19Ti Die shirts in their home. They realized that three
- 17:23were for them, but wondered about that little shirt. The
- 17:28big question in the home now is this Will this
- 17:32shirt be for a girl? Next article? Former Clay man
- 17:40given twenty eight years. A former Clay County Man, Daniel Hoskins,
- 17:47fifty six, was sentenced on Thursday to twenty eight years
- 17:52by US District Judge Karen Caldwell for two counts of
- 17:57production of child pornography. According to hoskins plea agreement on
- 18:04June second. In June third, twenty twenty five, Hoskins produced
- 18:08child pornography with a minor victim while he was incarcerated
- 18:16in the Madison County Detention Center. He instructed the miner
- 18:20to produce child pnography using the detention center's video jail
- 18:26call system. Jason Parman, first Assistant United States Attorney for
- 18:32the Eastern District of Kentucky, and Olivia Olsen, Special Agent
- 18:37in Charge FBI Louisville Field Office jointly announced the sentencing.
- 18:44The investigation was conducted by FBI KSP and Madison County
- 18:51Sheriff's Office. Assistant US Attorney Justin Blankenship prosecuted the case
- 18:59on behalf of the United States. Next article New Beach
- 19:05Creek walking trail opens Manchester outdoor enthusiasts now having new
- 19:11destination to explore as The Beech Creek Trail has officially
- 19:17been completed and is open for public use. Located behind
- 19:22Governor's Campground, the new trail system offers opportunities for both
- 19:28hikers and mountain bikers, featuring two distinct routes designed to
- 19:35accommodate different skill levels. The trail was designed by Dessi
- 19:41and Ben of Dirt Solutions and includes the Governor's Loop,
- 19:49an easy route geared toward beginners and families in the
- 19:53Beach Creek Climb, a moderately challenging trail for those seeking
- 19:58a more strenuous out door experience. Both trails are clearly marked,
- 20:04with the trailhead located near the wood line behind Governor's Campground.
- 20:10The project was completed through a collaborative effort between the
- 20:15City of Manchester and Trailtown, continuing local efforts to expand
- 20:21outdoor recreation and promote tourism throughout the community. Manchester Mayor
- 20:27Steve Collins said the completion of the trails another step
- 20:32forward in enhancing the city's recreational offerings. Quote. We're excited
- 20:38to officially open the Beech Creek Trail and provide another
- 20:42quality outdoor attraction for both our residents and visitors. Unquote,
- 20:47Colin said quote Projects like this improve the quality of
- 20:53life in our community while also helping showcase the natural
- 20:58beauty of Manchester. We appreciate our partnership with Trail Town
- 21:04in the outstanding work by Dessi and Ben of Dirt
- 21:07Solutions in creating a trail system that can be enjoyed
- 21:12by people of varying very varying skill levels. City officials
- 21:20encourage visitors to use the designated trailhead behind Governor's Campground
- 21:26into foul posted trail markers while enjoying the new system.
- 21:32The Beech Creek Trail is expected to become another attraction
- 21:38for outdoor recreation and enthusiasts visiting Manchester, complementing the city's
- 21:44growing network of trails, river access points, and other tourism
- 21:50amenities and sports. Young Tigers making strides as pre season
- 21:58enters final stretch Manchester summer football doesn't count in the standings,
- 22:13but don't tell that to Clay County Tigers. For a
- 22:16program replacing several key contributors over the last few seasons,
- 22:23every snap during seven on seven Passing League has mattered.
- 22:28It's been a chance for younger players to gain valuable
- 22:31varsity experience, for returning veterans to shake off the rust,
- 22:36and for the coaching staff to begin piecing together exactly
- 22:41who will be making plays under the Friday night lights
- 22:44in just a few short weeks. If head coach Mike
- 22:47Seismore's evaluation is any indication, the Tigers are exactly where
- 22:53they hope to be. Quote, I feel like we have
- 22:55improved every time we have played seven on seven this
- 22:59summer on quote, Seismore said, Clay County spent the summer
- 23:03competing against a variety of opponents, making trips to Hazzard
- 23:07and Whitley County, while also bringing home the championship from
- 23:11a Lynn Camp seven on seven tournament. While wins are
- 23:15always welcome, Seizemore said, the biggest takeaway wasn't the record,
- 23:20it was watching his team mature with every opportunity. Our
- 23:24kids have improved, they've competed, and they're continuously working hard.
- 23:29He said. It's been a great opportunity for us to
- 23:32see who was ready to compete and who may need
- 23:35a little more development. With several new faces expected to
- 23:40step into prominent offensive rows this fall, the Passing League
- 23:45offered perhaps the best look yet at what Clay County's
- 23:48next wave of skill players would become. The Tigers will
- 23:54lean on a mixture of returning experience in young talent,
- 23:58and Sizemore believes menny of the players who were forced
- 24:02into varsity action a year ago are beginning to reap
- 24:06the benefits of those early growing pains. Quote, We're fortunate
- 24:11to have several kids who can play unquote, Seismore said,
- 24:15a lot of these guys got thrown in in there
- 24:18early last season, and I think that's really going to
- 24:22pay off as they continue to grow. Among those putting
- 24:25together productive summers have been Weston Bowling, Drew Elvis, Skyler Roberts,
- 24:35Jake Gray, Brandon Brown, Matthew Brown, Bill McNamara, Bentley Jackson,
- 24:41Hunter Napier, and j D Lipps. Sizemore also pointed to
- 24:46a several freshmen who have impressed throughout the summer and
- 24:51will continue battling for varsity playing time when preseason camp begins.
- 24:57What it has stood out most to the coaching staff. However,
- 25:01isn't necessarily one player over another, it's the overall attitude
- 25:06of a young group eager to improve. Sizemore described the
- 25:10team as coachable and consistent, adding those qualities have been
- 25:16a trademark of many successful Clay County teams over the
- 25:20past decade. While this group may lack experience compared to
- 25:24some recent Tiger squads, he believes its willingness to learn
- 25:28gives it the opportunity to develop into another successful team
- 25:33in the years ahead. With Summer Passing League now in
- 25:37the rearview mirror, the Tigers are turning their full attention
- 25:41toward the physical portion of preseason practice. The helmets and
- 25:47shorts are giving way to pads, and the focus shifts
- 25:50from winning July Passing tournaments to preparing for Friday nights
- 25:56this fall. Quote we finished up our preseason seven on
- 26:01seven work unquote, Seismore said. Quote. Now our focus is
- 26:05doing the things we need to do to be ready
- 26:08to play on Friday nights. The next week will answer
- 26:12plenty of questions for Clay County, but one thing came
- 26:15clear throughout the summer. This year's Tigers embraced the opportunity
- 26:19to compete, improve and lay the foundation for what they
- 26:22hope will be another successful season. This concludes the reading
- 26:27of the Manchester Enterprise. Your reader has been Jim Rice.
