- 0:01First Corinthians chapter 16 Let us pray.
- 0:06Our Father, who is in heaven, holy is your name, your Kingdom
- 0:11come, and your will be done here on this earth, just as it is
- 0:15there in heaven. Give us this day Our Daily
- 0:19Bread, and forgive us for our sins, as we forgive those who
- 0:23sin against us. Lead us not into temptation, but
- 0:29deliver us from the evil one, for yours is the Kingdom and the
- 0:34power and the glory. Forever, forever and ever we
- 0:41worship Yeshua. Forever and ever we lift His
- 0:46name up high. We worship you today, God in
- 0:50spirit and truth. We thank you for all of your
- 0:52eternal promises from Genesis to Revelation.
- 0:56God, we hold them very near and dear.
- 1:00God, we meditate upon them, We munch upon them.
- 1:03God, we ruminate. Father, we allow it to digest.
- 1:07We allow it to become part of our very being.
- 1:11God, all of the promises contained in your word, the
- 1:14spoken word, the authority for our lives, the mandate for the
- 1:19nations. God, I pray in the name of Jesus
- 1:22that there'll be many who come to repentance today.
- 1:26Come to the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ.
- 1:29Come into a relationship with you through your Son, Jesus
- 1:33Christ. Father, I pray in the name of
- 1:35Jesus that you will be well pleased today with the reading
- 1:39of your text. God, give us sound minds.
- 1:42God, give us right theology. God, let us rightly divide the
- 1:46word your word. Father, I pray that you'll give
- 1:50us divine counsel from on high. God, I pray that Holy Spirit,
- 1:55you will speak to us today. Hide me and hide my words.
- 2:00Hide my thoughts and let it be Holy Spirit who speaks and
- 2:04teaches and corrects, who disciplines.
- 2:09Yes, and convict us, Holy Spirit, of all the times that
- 2:13we've got it wrong, Every time we step out of line, convict us
- 2:18and bring us back into the rightful understanding of the
- 2:22love that God has for us. Cover us with the blood of
- 2:27Christ. Cover us with grace.
- 2:29Your mercies are new every day. And so, God, we stand on those
- 2:32promises knowing that you're leading us home from glory to
- 2:36glory. We love you, King Jesus.
- 2:38It's all about you, King Jesus, we worship you.
- 2:40King Jesus. Come, Lord, come, Maranatha, we
- 2:44love you. And this in your mighty and holy
- 2:47and worthy and lovely name, that I pray Jesus.
- 2:53Amen. Well, let's start in verse one
- 2:59now concerning the collection for the Saints.
- 3:05As I have given order to the churches of Galatia, Even so you
- 3:11do so here. Paul was not giving them an
- 3:17option. He was not just giving a
- 3:20suggestion. It was a commandment.
- 3:22He was telling the churches that he established and the ones to
- 3:26be established to make up, to make sure that they were taking
- 3:30up a collection. And Paul wants to talk a little
- 3:34bit about financial stewardship today.
- 3:37And we see this on 2 extremes. On the one extreme, you have
- 3:42churches that never talk about money.
- 3:44And then there are other churches that that's all that
- 3:47they ever talk about is money. And we need to be balanced.
- 3:51And Paul is going to show that it is robbery of God to not give
- 3:58the Saints opportunity to sow into the Kingdom.
- 4:02You can't take anything with you, but you sure can send it
- 4:06ahead. But we are not compelled.
- 4:10It is not compulsory giving friends.
- 4:13It is not manipulation friends. It should not ever be because of
- 4:19emotions or guilt or shame that we give, for God loves a
- 4:24cheerful giver. And we need to count the cost
- 4:28before we ever get to the House of prayer, before we ever get to
- 4:32the meeting, to make sure that we are giving in proportion to
- 4:37our income. And you can move the decimal.
- 4:43But the better thing to do is to pray to the Lord God and ask him
- 4:49what he would have you to give friends and you cannot out give
- 4:54God verse 2 upon the first day of the week.
- 4:59Let everyone of you lay by him in store as God has prospered
- 5:05him that there be no gatherings when I come.
- 5:08So Paul was like, I'm not going to come and try to manipulate
- 5:13you to give when I come have it already put aside so that I do
- 5:19not have to Lord over you when it comes to your giving for the
- 5:25churches. And you notice here he says on
- 5:28the first day of the week. You can see here that he wants
- 5:33it to be meditated upon, not just spur of the moment.
- 5:39Friends do not just tip God. We need to make sure that we
- 5:45understand what it is that we're doing whenever we sow into the
- 5:50Kingdom of God. And God sees it, and he will
- 5:53openly reward it. And you will have plenty of
- 5:57rewards. And the thief cannot break in
- 6:01the rust does not destroy. The moth does not destroy.
- 6:05Store up for yourselves treasures in heaven.
- 6:10Verse 3 And when I come, whomsoever you shall approve by
- 6:15your letters, them will I send to bring your liberality unto
- 6:20Jerusalem. He's saying this is not for me
- 6:23to profit. And what a great example Paul is
- 6:28trying to set here. He's not saying gather a bunch
- 6:31of money so that when I come I can take it to Jerusalem.
- 6:35He's saying gather the money and whoever you choose, you can send
- 6:40it with them whoever you trust. Paul is not saying that he wants
- 6:44control over the money. What an amazing example of
- 6:49financial stewardship that Paul is painting this picture of for
- 6:53these Corinthians here in this last chapter.
- 6:56For And if it be meat that I go also, they shall go with me.
- 7:02He's saying, if the Lord directs me to go to Jerusalem, then they
- 7:06can come with me with the finances in tow. 5 Now I will
- 7:14come to you when I shall pass through Macedonia, for I do pass
- 7:19through Macedonia. So Paul is making his great
- 7:23missionary plans as he's going out and planting these churches,
- 7:26and he knows that he has to go through Corinth to get to
- 7:31Macedonia, and he's saying, I will come to you. 6 And it may
- 7:36be that I will abide, yeah, in winter with you, that you may
- 7:41bring me on my journey wherever I go.
- 7:45So he's saying that perhaps the timing is going to be where he's
- 7:49going to be there in the winter, and he will stay in Corinth with
- 7:53this early church. And a lot of us, on a side note,
- 7:58a lot of us look at Acts 2 and we think that the early church
- 8:01was some super miraculous movement of God.
- 8:06And yes, in a sense it was. But you can see that the early
- 8:11church had problems just like we do.
- 8:13Friends. 7 For I will not see you now, by the way, but I trust
- 8:20to tarry a while with you if the Lord permits.
- 8:24That is the whole key. Friends, think about it.
- 8:28Do not say we will go here, we will spend a year and we will
- 8:32make a profit. What we ought to say, friends,
- 8:36is that if the Lord wills, we will go here and we will go
- 8:41there and we will make a profit. Do not buy in to thinking that
- 8:48your future is a guarantee. The Bible teaches us that our
- 8:52life is but a vapor. It's here today and it's gone
- 8:56tomorrow. This could be your very last day
- 9:00on planet Earth, friends. This could be your very last
- 9:03month on planet Earth, friends. We do not need to try and
- 9:10pretend as if we are the masters of our own destiny.
- 9:15Friends, it does not work that way.
- 9:17We go to the Lord God, we acknowledge God, and we allow
- 9:21Him to direct our steps. Many are the plans of a man's
- 9:25heart, but the Lord directs his steps. 9 Actually, we'll go back
- 9:31to 8, but I will tear you at Ephesus until Pentecost.
- 9:35So he's making these great missionary travel plans.
- 9:39He's telling them that he desires to come to them.
- 9:44He is in Ephesus. He's wanting to go to Macedonia.
- 9:48He's going to stop off in Corinth on the way in winter
- 9:51over. He mentions Pentecost here verse
- 9:579 for a great door and effectual is opened unto me and there are
- 10:04many adversaries. So here you can see Paul is
- 10:09being led by the Lord God. He knows what is at stake.
- 10:13The Lord has revealed the things that he must suffer for his
- 10:17name's sake and here you can see it's referenced.
- 10:20It is this great enigmatic balance between the harmony and
- 10:28the joy and the beauty of God. And then you see the
- 10:32persecution. You see the thorns, you see all
- 10:36of the violence and the lashes. You see the shipwreck.
- 10:40You see all of the nights of being cold, you see Paul going
- 10:46hungry, and he knows what he's up against.
- 10:49There are many adversaries. And just remember, friends, the
- 10:53spirit of the Antichrist has already gone out into the world.
- 10:5910 Now if Timothy comes, see that he may be with you without
- 11:04fear, for he works the work of the Lord as also I do.
- 11:10So Paul here is wanting them to know that Timothy is like a son
- 11:17unto Paul, and he's saying, Respect him when he comes.
- 11:20Do not treat him like a lesser, do not take advantage of his
- 11:25youth, do not try to usurp any kind of authority.
- 11:31And Lord over Timothy, for he is a worker of the Lord, and Paul
- 11:36here is endorsing Timothy as his replacement. 11 Let no man
- 11:45therefore despise him, but conduct him forth in peace, that
- 11:50he may come unto you, unto me, for I look for him with the
- 11:55brothers. So Paul is telling him, telling
- 11:58the church at Corinth not to despise him, perhaps because he
- 12:03is young and because he doesn't look the part.
- 12:07But Paul wants them to know that he has the seal and the stamp of
- 12:14Paul's authority because he loves the Lord.
- 12:17That is the difference here. Timothy would not come to them
- 12:21as just someone who wants to try to boss them around.
- 12:24Timothy will come to them as a teacher, as someone who has been
- 12:29taught by Paul and endorsed by Paul. 12 as touching our brother
- 12:36Apollo's. I greatly desired him to come
- 12:38unto you with the brothers. But his will was not at all to
- 12:43come at this time. But he will come when he shall
- 12:47have convenient time. So Paul didn't try to use his
- 12:51Apostolic authority to make Apollo's go and visit them.
- 12:56You can see this hierarchy of the apostles where they did not
- 13:03try to act as if one was better than the other, and that is what
- 13:07Christ told James and John when they wanted to sit at his right
- 13:12and sit at his left. He said that is how the Gentile
- 13:15world behaves and acts and thinks, and you are not called
- 13:19to act like that, friends. Our authority is based in our
- 13:23shepherd, and He shepherds us well.
- 13:26Friends 13 watch you stand fast in the faith.
- 13:39Quit you like men and be strong. He's saying act like men, be
- 13:44strong, be courageous, do not be feminine, do not be a coward, do
- 13:51not shrink back. Act like men.
- 13:56It's high time for men to act like men, not like women and not
- 14:01like animals and not like little boys.
- 14:04It is high time for courage to rise.
- 14:10That is what God had told Joshua before he went in and took the
- 14:16promised land, to be strong and be courageous.
- 14:21And that is our call, friends. Men, it is high time to act like
- 14:28men. We should not be overgrown
- 14:33little boys. We should not be soft and
- 14:38delicate. We need to be the strong.
- 14:44We need to be the courageous. We need to make sure that we are
- 14:50willing to lay down our lives for our brothers and for our
- 14:55sisters and for our families. We need to make sure we count
- 15:00the cost before the battle ever arises.
- 15:04Friends, so that you can stare death in the face and not
- 15:08retreat. No retreat and the violent.
- 15:12Take the Kingdom by force, friends.
- 15:19Watch and stand fast. Act like men.
- 15:22Be strong. Fourteen, let all your things be
- 15:26done with charity. Let all your things be done with
- 15:32love. Can you see this delicate
- 15:35balance between strength and between love?
- 15:40And Jesus himself told us that love knows no greater than for a
- 15:47man to lay down his life for his brothers.
- 15:52That is what we need to make sure we have positioned
- 15:56ourselves in a way that when the time comes, we do not try to
- 16:02hold on to this life, because if you do, you will lose your life.
- 16:06Friends 15 I beg you, brother, you know the House of Stefanus
- 16:17that it is the first fruits of a Kia, and that they have addicted
- 16:22themselves to the ministry of the Saints.
- 16:26He's saying, I beg you, look at Stefanus, look at how they are
- 16:31addicted to helping and addicted to serving and addicted to
- 16:36giving. 16 that you submit yourselves unto such, and to
- 16:42everyone that helps with us and laborers.
- 16:46So he's saying, commit yourselves over to the work of
- 16:50the Lord. Do not sit on the sidelines, do
- 16:53not grow lazy, do not check out. This is wartime friends.
- 16:59We will have a great time of rest when we make it into the
- 17:03Kingdom, but if you have breath in your lungs today, it is time
- 17:08to get into the fight. Friends.
- 17:09It is not time to be found on the sidelines being lazy.
- 17:16Friends. The workers are few, but the
- 17:20harvest is plenty. Let's get into the game.
- 17:24Do not be found making this life all about sin and self, all
- 17:30about pleasures and pleasantries, all about what you
- 17:34want, where you want to go, your preferences.
- 17:38You have to lay all of that down.
- 17:40Lock eyes with Jesus Christ, put your hand to the plow and refuse
- 17:47to move unless He moves. Refuse to leave unless He lets
- 17:51you, unless He relieves you. Friends And we need to walk in
- 17:56the calling that God has placed on us, and that calling is
- 18:00following after Him wherever He goes and having an unoffendable
- 18:04spirit. Friends 17 I am glad of the
- 18:09coming of Stefanus and Fortunatus and Achaicus for that
- 18:15which was lacking on your part. They have supplied.
- 18:19So Paul here takes a dig at the Corinthians and he says where
- 18:24you did not give, they stepped up and they are addicted to
- 18:29helping out. Think about it, friends.
- 18:31Paul holds no punches here. He lets the Corinthians know
- 18:36where they have shortchanged him and where others have stolen
- 18:41their blessing. Friends.
- 18:44And that is the truth for us today and this day and this
- 18:48hour. You do not have to give to make
- 18:53it to heaven. Giving is a natural overflow of
- 18:59a life that is sold out to the Lord Jesus Christ, but it is not
- 19:03a mandate. When we're talking about
- 19:05salvation, however, you're going to shortchange yourself, and a
- 19:12lot of it. You won't even realize until
- 19:15after you take your last breath. And whenever we suffer the
- 19:18judgment where Jesus lays everything that we did on the
- 19:24fire and most of everything gets burned up, but there are some
- 19:29things that we will get to keep for all of eternity.
- 19:33And that is where you're going to see all of the things that
- 19:36you sent ahead that you stored up treasures for yourself in
- 19:40heaven. You will find those whenever we
- 19:44get through that judgment. 18 For they have refreshed my
- 19:54spirit, and yours therefore acknowledge you them that are
- 20:00such. 19 The churches of Asia salute you, Aquila and Priscilla
- 20:05salute you much in the Lord with the church that is in their
- 20:09house. 20 All the brothers greet you, greet you one another with
- 20:14a holy kiss. So you can see here that Paul
- 20:19has been refreshed by the generosity, friends.
- 20:22And God loves a cheerful giver. He loves a generous heart.
- 20:25He loves somebody who doesn't give to get.
- 20:29They give because of all that has been given to them.
- 20:33You cannot out give God friends. And we give because God gave
- 20:381st. And here we can see this
- 20:43beautiful picture of Aquila and Priscilla and the churches.
- 20:48You see the holy kiss and the brothers. 21 The salutation of
- 20:52me, Paul with my own hand. 22 If any man love not the Lord Jesus
- 20:58Christ, let him be Anathema Maranatha.
- 21:03So Paul goes hard in the paint right here, friends.
- 21:10Paul is essentially saying that those that refuse to love the
- 21:14Lord Jesus Christ will be eternally separated from God for
- 21:21all of eternity. If they do not put their faith
- 21:25in Him before they take their last breath, they will be
- 21:28anathema. And Paul himself said he was
- 21:31willing to be anathema if all the Jews would come to the
- 21:36saving knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ in the way that he
- 21:40had. And here he mixes the anathema
- 21:44with the Maranatha, which is just.
- 21:46Lord come, the Lord has came, and the Lord is coming.
- 21:50Maranatha. 23 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.
- 21:5824 My love be with you all in Christ Jesus.
- 22:04Amen. That's the whole theme of the
- 22:09whole book. It's love.
- 22:14It is love that makes us want to give friends, and Paul wants
- 22:22them to know that if they truly love the Lord Jesus Christ, the
- 22:27giving will follow. The very thing that we all need
- 22:32desperately is to fall in love with Jesus Christ, to not be
- 22:36offended by his ways, to not think that churches just want
- 22:41your money, to not look and compare all of the things that
- 22:48the pastor has and that you don't.
- 22:50We give and we give to God. What the church does beyond that
- 22:54is on them. God will deal with them, but we
- 22:57give to God. We send it ahead.
- 23:00I hope that you've been blessed by this amazing chapter here in
- 23:04the book of God. I know I sure have.
- 23:09I'm praying for every single one of you.
- 23:12I love you. We'll see you back here
- 23:15tomorrow. God bless you.
