- 0:02Speaker 1: This is an unspoiled network podcast. This has spoiled me
- 0:09Speaker 1: covering one piece the live action Netflix series Season two,
- 0:16Speaker 1: Episode three, Whiskey Business, which is very fun to say.
- 0:24Speaker 1: In this episode, we are at whiskey peak and we
- 0:28Speaker 1: are dealing with tons of assassins. This was a really fun,
- 0:35Speaker 1: goofy episode with a lot of great fighting, so much
- 0:40Speaker 1: fighting that I feel like I'm not going to have
- 0:42Speaker 1: a whole lot to talk about, but we'll see how
- 0:44Speaker 1: I do. Welcome to spoil me of Welcome to the
- 1:07Speaker 1: show everyone. I am Natasha. Thank you very much to
- 1:11Speaker 1: Florian and Bernadette, who is in the chat today for
- 1:16Speaker 1: commissioning this episode. Florian couldn't make it, and Bernadette says
- 1:21Speaker 1: the audacity the one time I'm here, we are royally displeased,
- 1:25Speaker 1: and Florian, I hope that you know that the Queen
- 1:28Speaker 1: is upset with you, so better get ready for that,
- 1:33Speaker 1: you guys. This is this like I'm trying to decide
- 1:41Speaker 1: exactly how to say this, because I was talking to
- 1:47Speaker 1: my husband the other night about the weirdness of being
- 1:54Speaker 1: unspoiled on the original one piece and covering the live
- 1:58Speaker 1: action one piece at the same time. Time and how
- 2:02Speaker 1: it's like I have really really grown to love the
- 2:06Speaker 1: animated one. And then I said, although I do suspect
- 2:09Speaker 1: some of that Stockholm syndrome, which he laughed, and I
- 2:12Speaker 1: was like, yeah, I kind of feel like, you know,
- 2:15Speaker 1: who knows how much of a percent, but that's probably
- 2:17Speaker 1: in there. But watching the live action really kind of
- 2:26Speaker 1: cements for me how great so many of these ideas are.
- 2:31Speaker 1: And it's just that it like the nature of the
- 2:35Speaker 1: way that manga seems to work and anime seems to work.
- 2:40Speaker 1: It just it's such like the demand for content is
- 2:44Speaker 1: so completely unreasonable that you've got to stretch things out
- 2:52Speaker 1: in order to not completely like burn yourself out. Like
- 2:56Speaker 1: I'm sort of beginning to understand where I owe and
- 3:01Speaker 1: I'm needing to like keep the fucking masses appeased and
- 3:05Speaker 1: not have them banging for my blood. That I need
- 3:09Speaker 1: to just have something to give folks. And that's like
- 3:16Speaker 1: inevitably what winds up happening with the anime as well,
- 3:20Speaker 1: And what a shame it is in a way, because
- 3:24Speaker 1: like we just have so much, uh, the culture that
- 3:31Speaker 1: we now live in. Content is what everything is all about,
- 3:38Speaker 1: whether or not it's like quality, it's the amount that's
- 3:44Speaker 1: really oftentimes what keeps things going. Like that's part of
- 3:50Speaker 1: the way even unspoiled works. You know, I don't have
- 3:55Speaker 1: time to tighten and edit my podcasts. I record at
- 4:02Speaker 1: minimum nine times a week, ten every other week, and
- 4:10Speaker 1: I just don't have the time to edit the way
- 4:13Speaker 1: that some shows edit when they only do one episode
- 4:16Speaker 1: a week. And I tried just doing the one a
- 4:20Speaker 1: week way back, and I just wasn't stretching enough to
- 4:25Speaker 1: reach like different audiences. I had to increase the sheer
- 4:29Speaker 1: amount of content that I put out in order to
- 4:32Speaker 1: make enough money to live on doing this. And there
- 4:37Speaker 1: are definitely times where I feel a little sad about
- 4:40Speaker 1: the fact that, like, probably if I had more time,
- 4:43Speaker 1: I could make a better end product with a more
- 4:47Speaker 1: tightly produced, polished sounding podcast, but I just don't have
- 4:55Speaker 1: the luxury of doing that. You know, I depend on
- 5:00Speaker 1: on many different people wanting me to cover many different
- 5:03Speaker 1: things and being able to reach all of these different people,
- 5:07Speaker 1: and I just really feel like it's such a shame
- 5:13Speaker 1: the way that capitalism works, in the way that it
- 5:17Speaker 1: makes it so that like you've got to keep producing
- 5:21Speaker 1: whether or not it really works for you, or whether
- 5:25Speaker 1: it's like quality for your audience, just because you've gotta
- 5:31Speaker 1: And from what y'all have talked about, Oda collapsed like
- 5:36Speaker 1: more than once due to exhaustion because he just never
- 5:39Speaker 1: took days off and was constantly pushing. And when you
- 5:44Speaker 1: see the live action and you see how much more
- 5:50Speaker 1: beautiful the same exact storylines are when they're focused and
- 5:56Speaker 1: tightened up, it makes me feel a little bit sad
- 6:01Speaker 1: in a way. And I wonder if Oda has that
- 6:05Speaker 1: as well. I wonder if there's a part of him
- 6:07Speaker 1: that wishes he could tell these stories in a more
- 6:10Speaker 1: compact way and he just knows that doesn't that's not
- 6:14Speaker 1: really how it can ever work for him, you know.
- 6:19Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 6:20Speaker 1: I'm just I can't help but think about that sort
- 6:23Speaker 1: of thing because I'm in a kind of similar position
- 6:28Speaker 1: in a way, you know. So anyway, I just really
- 6:33Speaker 1: every time that we come upon another one of these
- 6:37Speaker 1: little arcs that took so long to get through in
- 6:41Speaker 1: the anime, and we go through it in a single episode,
- 6:47Speaker 1: and by the end of it, I'm like, that was
- 6:49Speaker 1: so satisfying, and it felt like a very complete story,
- 6:52Speaker 1: and that was like a perfect amount of story to
- 6:57Speaker 1: fit into this episode. I am both really like delighted
- 7:04Speaker 1: to see how well this property translates to this new medium,
- 7:10Speaker 1: and I also feel kind of sad because I know
- 7:14Speaker 1: how long it took to get to this point in
- 7:18Speaker 1: the manga from the beginning, you know, whereas we're only
- 7:23Speaker 1: in season two of the live action and the live
- 7:26Speaker 1: action only has how many episodes per season, like ten?
- 7:30Speaker 1: Was it even that many? I don't remember, So anyway,
- 7:35Speaker 1: it's just, uh, there's just something there that kind of
- 7:42Speaker 1: it's it's really wonderful watching this, but there is a
- 7:46Speaker 1: part of me that it almost like depresses me in
- 7:49Speaker 1: a way. And I hope you guys get what I mean,
- 7:52Speaker 1: because I'm not trying to say watching this show depresses me.
- 7:55Speaker 1: It's just really I think there's also another aspect of
- 8:00Speaker 1: it where I know how much time he put into
- 8:03Speaker 1: the storylines via a manga, and then that it can
- 8:07Speaker 1: be effectively and satisfyingly boiled down to such a short duration.
- 8:13Speaker 1: Can that does that bother him at all?
- 8:17Speaker 2: Like?
- 8:17Speaker 1: Does does he kind of go that's like literally a
- 8:20Speaker 1: year of drawing for me and they manage to get
- 8:23Speaker 1: it across in forty eight minutes. You know? That kind
- 8:27Speaker 1: of thing, the way in which I also feel about
- 8:31Speaker 1: like people who write novels and they work for two
- 8:34Speaker 1: years the second installment in a series that everybody's been
- 8:40Speaker 1: waiting for, and folks finish reading that in sixteen hours
- 8:47Speaker 1: and then they're like, I can't wait for the next one.
- 8:50Speaker 1: And the author is sitting there like that took me
- 8:52Speaker 1: two years? Are you serious? You've it's oh, you read
- 8:55Speaker 1: it already. Oh my god. It's just you know, because
- 9:01Speaker 1: like when I think about covering everything I do for Unspoiled,
- 9:06Speaker 1: you know, there are folks who will come in late
- 9:08Speaker 1: and they will find like old shows that I've done,
- 9:11Speaker 1: and they will binge all the coverage and it's literally
- 9:16Speaker 1: years of my life and they managed to finish binging
- 9:19Speaker 1: it in a month. And I'm just like having to
- 9:23Speaker 1: kind of come to the realization that all of that work,
- 9:28Speaker 1: and really when it comes down to how much content
- 9:30Speaker 1: that actually adds up to, it's really not that much,
- 9:34Speaker 1: you know, But the way that this is, uh, this
- 9:39Speaker 1: is done. And I have been kind of wondering, y'all
- 9:43Speaker 1: what you would think about me going back and looking
- 9:48Speaker 1: at some of the original anime arcs and like watching
- 9:53Speaker 1: them alongside watching this because I can't decide if that's
- 9:57Speaker 1: like a good idea or not. Part of feels like
- 10:00Speaker 1: it would be really interesting to do. Another part of
- 10:02Speaker 1: me feels like, would that result in me just spending
- 10:05Speaker 1: all this time talking about Well, in the anime, it
- 10:08Speaker 1: was like this, like, I know, I definitely do that
- 10:10Speaker 1: to a degree anyway, but would it make it so
- 10:13Speaker 1: that that's all I talk about? And if there are
- 10:17Speaker 1: any of you that are doing it that way, you know,
- 10:20Speaker 1: let me know. But I don't recall as much of
- 10:26Speaker 1: the interior thoughts of Zoro being part of the story.
- 10:32Speaker 1: And what's really interesting about seeing this in the live
- 10:35Speaker 1: action is getting to see how, like we know that
- 10:39Speaker 1: Zorro has been kind of shaken by how Mihawk completely
- 10:45Speaker 1: spanked him and sent him on his way. It was
- 10:47Speaker 1: embarrassing for him, like he really thought, maybe I could
- 10:51Speaker 1: take this guy on and really make a stand, and
- 10:55Speaker 1: bro didn't even draw one of his actual swords, and really,
- 11:01Speaker 1: that's like so devastating. I enjoyed a lot getting to
- 11:10Speaker 1: see how Mihawk haunts his thoughts, how everything he's doing,
- 11:16Speaker 1: all of the practice, like he's imagining the way that
- 11:20Speaker 1: Mihawk would be reacting. He is fighting as if Mihawk
- 11:24Speaker 1: is actually there, and there comes a point where he's
- 11:28Speaker 1: like sliding across the deck as if he's been shoved,
- 11:31Speaker 1: And I understand that this is all just meant to
- 11:34Speaker 1: be practice in his head, but it's very funny because
- 11:39Speaker 1: like there's nobody there to shove him, so how exactly
- 11:41Speaker 1: does he slide like that? And I'm wondering if there's
- 11:43Speaker 1: anybody in the crew watching him practice and watching the
- 11:48Speaker 1: way that he's like being pushed around by nothing, and going,
- 11:51Speaker 1: what exactly is going on here? You know what I mean?
- 11:56Speaker 1: But it's just this inadequacy that follows him throughout and
- 12:03Speaker 1: later on when he's up against like one hundred people,
- 12:07Speaker 1: Mihawk is counting down but also telling him not to
- 12:11Speaker 1: get too excited even when he's like really close to
- 12:14Speaker 1: actually succeeding. And that voice in your head is just
- 12:20Speaker 1: such a real thing when you are a perfectionist. And
- 12:24Speaker 1: I related to this a lot. Even though the type
- 12:28Speaker 1: of perfectionism that I have, this type of like direct
- 12:32Speaker 1: rivalry isn't really a thing, I could totally see how
- 12:37Speaker 1: this would happen, and I enjoyed getting to see it
- 12:43Speaker 1: also because it's giving Zoro screen time in a way
- 12:48Speaker 1: that we've got, you know, this ensemble cast, and I'm
- 12:53Speaker 1: sure that it can get a little bit tricky to
- 12:56Speaker 1: give everyone the time to shine. And Zoro is not
- 13:01Speaker 1: a character who is chatty, and so we have to
- 13:07Speaker 1: find ways for him to be showcased, and a lot
- 13:09Speaker 1: of that will be fighting, but we don't always every island.
- 13:14Speaker 1: He doesn't wind up. He does fight every island, but
- 13:18Speaker 1: that's not like necessarily the majority of what he's doing
- 13:21Speaker 1: on a given island, So having it be this sort
- 13:23Speaker 1: of internal fight is just, I think a very clever
- 13:28Speaker 1: way to do this. Bernadette says there's a fan project
- 13:32Speaker 1: called one Pace that edited the animated what the manga was,
- 13:35Speaker 1: so that would be more interesting to check out. Okay,
- 13:38Speaker 1: that's interesting. Bernadette says, I also enjoy him imagining Miehawk
- 13:42Speaker 1: because it means I get to see the hot live
- 13:44Speaker 1: action Mihawk again, and that is fair. Yes, he's like
- 13:48Speaker 1: not really my type, but I really understand the appeal.
- 13:53Speaker 1: There are some people that I'm just like, I don't
- 13:55Speaker 1: get it, and this is not one of them. This
- 13:57Speaker 1: is the guy where I'm like, no, I see it
- 13:58Speaker 1: and it's the drip. It's the kind of like there's
- 14:03Speaker 1: at one point Zoro sort of lunges for his face,
- 14:08Speaker 1: and it has Mihawk sort of just stepping aside, almost
- 14:12Speaker 1: like rolling his eyes in this lazy, languid like why
- 14:16Speaker 1: are you wasting my time kind of energy, And it
- 14:20Speaker 1: is really cutting to me pun intended to imagine that
- 14:26Speaker 1: even in his mental image of Mehawk, Zoro can't help
- 14:31Speaker 1: but have this guy hold him in complete contempt, you
- 14:35Speaker 1: know what I mean. So eventually they get interrupted by
- 14:42Speaker 1: the shouts that are coming from us up who is
- 14:45Speaker 1: catching a fish. He keeps talking about how it's like
- 14:47Speaker 1: this enormous fucking like maybe it's a whale, and then
- 14:51Speaker 1: he winds up pulling up this like six pound you know,
- 14:54Speaker 1: it's a perfectly reasonable finish to go for dinner, but
- 14:57Speaker 1: he's doing the thing that he does. And then we
- 15:01Speaker 1: go inside and we have our mister nine trussed up
- 15:05Speaker 1: in the corner and Sanji making food and slicing the
- 15:09Speaker 1: fish up and being really really impressed with the quality
- 15:12Speaker 1: of the flesh, and mister nine just being like, I
- 15:15Speaker 1: cannot believe that I am have been captured by people
- 15:21Speaker 1: who are so he calls them provincial that they would
- 15:24Speaker 1: be impressed by a fish, and that is just somebody
- 15:31Speaker 1: that you know isn't a foodie. And that's all there
- 15:34Speaker 1: is to it. If you just don't get it, you
- 15:37Speaker 1: just don't get it. I don't know what else to
- 15:39Speaker 1: tell you, bro. And what we have as this scene
- 15:44Speaker 1: because Zorro's watching Sanji cut this fish up and there's
- 15:49Speaker 1: a bit of you know, commentary about how using knives
- 15:53Speaker 1: is an art and YadA YadA, and later on there's
- 15:58Speaker 1: a mention of like how it's brought back up again
- 16:03Speaker 1: that he said all of this but then got got
- 16:10Speaker 1: in this moment. I want to point something out that
- 16:14Speaker 1: I meant to say last time. Songien this scene is
- 16:19Speaker 1: wearing like a navy blue short sleeve button up that
- 16:24Speaker 1: kind of looks almost like a short sleeve chef coat,
- 16:29Speaker 1: like a like not really, but I see the vibe
- 16:32Speaker 1: here with a salmon colored apron over it. And I
- 16:37Speaker 1: just wanted to mention that last episode, when we're going
- 16:41Speaker 1: on a reverse mountain, he's wearing like a henley and
- 16:46Speaker 1: a T shirt over the henley, and I was just
- 16:50Speaker 1: feeling very like, what is this, what is he wearing?
- 16:53Speaker 1: It just was like a decidedly non songy outfit. To me,
- 16:58Speaker 1: we're getting a little bit better, but I still wasn't
- 17:02Speaker 1: really feeling this. It's sort of surprising because mostly all
- 17:06Speaker 1: of the costumes in this show hit so hard, but
- 17:11Speaker 1: to me, for some reason, Sonji is the one that
- 17:16Speaker 1: I'm not really seeing what I would want to see.
- 17:19Speaker 1: I imagine him being more polished all the time, you know,
- 17:23Speaker 1: and a Henley and T shirt. Are you serious? It's
- 17:27Speaker 1: just so it's so off that even my husband was like,
- 17:31Speaker 1: what is Sanji wearing? Like he even commented on it.
- 17:35Speaker 1: I don't know if it was supposed to have been
- 17:37Speaker 1: that he was asleep and got woken up, but I
- 17:39Speaker 1: don't think that's meant to be it. So I was
- 17:42Speaker 1: sort of more on the alert this episode for like
- 17:46Speaker 1: noticing what it was that he was wearing. And the
- 17:49Speaker 1: one thing I will say that sort of surprising and
- 17:51Speaker 1: it's probably on purpose, but he and Zoro are both
- 17:57Speaker 1: wearing this really dark navy blue. It's a different style.
- 18:03Speaker 1: Like I said, Zorro's is a long sleeve and he's
- 18:05Speaker 1: got it opened so you can see the undershirt and
- 18:07Speaker 1: you can see like he's got that sort of cummerbund
- 18:10Speaker 1: thing going on, So the effect overall is totally different.
- 18:15Speaker 1: But I think it's significant that they are wearing the
- 18:17Speaker 1: same color in such a in a way that it
- 18:23Speaker 1: feels like we are drawing a line between them and
- 18:25Speaker 1: sort of connecting them, you know. Meanwhile, as all of
- 18:32Speaker 1: this is going on, we have Nami coming in and
- 18:34Speaker 1: out of the galley with reports of the weather changing dramatically.
- 18:41Speaker 1: So she comes in at one point and she's just
- 18:44Speaker 1: in a regular T shirt and then she says like,
- 18:48Speaker 1: oh my god, it's gotten so warm out, and she's
- 18:50Speaker 1: in a bikini top, and she leaves and she comes
- 18:53Speaker 1: back in and she's like half pulled on a hoodie
- 18:56Speaker 1: over the bikini top and there's snow in her hair.
- 18:59Speaker 1: She's just like, what is happening? And I just want
- 19:03Speaker 1: to register my appreciation for the fact that there's no
- 19:07Speaker 1: commentary whatsoever on the fact that she's in a bikini.
- 19:12Speaker 2: Thank you.
- 19:13Speaker 1: Wow. I didn't know it was like we were going
- 19:18Speaker 1: to be this reasonable about it. We've been very restrained
- 19:22Speaker 1: with Sanji, and I have been so pleased. But I
- 19:28Speaker 1: really thought that once we have Nami in a literal
- 19:31Speaker 1: bikini top, that it was inevitable. He was gonna say something.
- 19:35Speaker 1: There was going to be, you know, And there's a
- 19:38Speaker 1: moment where him and us Up exchange looks and I
- 19:43Speaker 1: fully thought it was a God damn she looked good,
- 19:48Speaker 1: didn't she. And then it turns out that it's just
- 19:50Speaker 1: them both being excited that there's snow outside because Sanji
- 19:54Speaker 1: wants to make sorbet and Usap wants to make a snowman.
- 19:58Speaker 1: He wants to build a snow queen. That's it. It had
- 20:02Speaker 1: nothing to do with nomie whatsoever. And you know, I
- 20:06Speaker 1: could see that there would probably be dudes out there
- 20:08Speaker 1: who are just like would the folk moon, But you
- 20:11Speaker 1: know what, I'm just so it's just so boring. It's
- 20:15Speaker 1: just so boring. It's really nice to not have this
- 20:17Speaker 1: be an issue. So anyway, we have then Loofy quote
- 20:27Speaker 1: interrogating Vivi, and uh, it goes the way that it
- 20:35Speaker 1: usually goes with him, where he's asking genuine questions because
- 20:40Speaker 1: he simply personally wants to know, but they do not.
- 20:48Speaker 1: They are not prepared for the fact that he genuinely
- 20:52Speaker 1: just wants to know, and so folks don't know how
- 20:56Speaker 1: to react to him or whether he's even serious, you know.
- 21:01Speaker 1: So he's asking her if she likes being an assassin.
- 21:05Speaker 1: She says that she loves it with a real sarcastic
- 21:10Speaker 1: tone of voice, and he just nods. He asks why
- 21:13Speaker 1: does your partner wear a crown and she says childhood
- 21:21Speaker 1: trauma and he just says, okay. I could not like
- 21:27Speaker 1: that response. Childhood trauma and him just nodding and not
- 21:32Speaker 1: asking any of further questions is really funny to me.
- 21:38Speaker 1: Asks her if she wants anything to eat, and she
- 21:41Speaker 1: looks genuinely like startled that he would offer over and
- 21:45Speaker 1: over again. There's just these moments between them where it
- 21:48Speaker 1: feels like I where it just he's People don't know
- 21:55Speaker 1: what to make of him, you know. So eventually she
- 21:58Speaker 1: says like, I am an assass and a baroque works
- 22:01Speaker 1: and that's all you need to know. And he picks
- 22:03Speaker 1: up a knife and says okay, And it's the knife
- 22:06Speaker 1: that she has been trying to get her hands on
- 22:08Speaker 1: this whole time, so you know, he picks it up,
- 22:11Speaker 1: and if you weren't who he is, we might be
- 22:15Speaker 1: kind of like, oh shit, what's he about to do?
- 22:17Speaker 1: But we're not because we know who the fuck lufy
- 22:19Speaker 1: is and that that's not what's happening here. He goes
- 22:22Speaker 1: out onto the deck of the ship and absolutely everybody
- 22:26Speaker 1: is just like, dude, what are you doing? What are
- 22:28Speaker 1: you doing? And he says, I just don't think she
- 22:34Speaker 1: wants to hurt us, and you can see Vivi's face
- 22:38Speaker 1: like it's true, she doesn't want to hurt them, but
- 22:43Speaker 1: she seems totally taken off guard that Lufy can tell
- 22:47Speaker 1: that and doesn't like she's just sort of like, what
- 22:49Speaker 1: the fuck is happening here? And you know, later on
- 22:55Speaker 1: there's a point where Lufy is really upset where he
- 22:58Speaker 1: feels like I judged you. I really thought that you
- 23:03Speaker 1: were like a decent person and I can't believe I
- 23:05Speaker 1: was so wrong about you, And then it's all brought
- 23:09Speaker 1: back around, you know, but it's a very It's just
- 23:15Speaker 1: really fun because the actress playing Vivi does excellent reactions.
- 23:20Speaker 1: She manages to put complicated expressions on her face that
- 23:24Speaker 1: really get across a combination of I'm confused, I'm pleasantly surprised,
- 23:32Speaker 1: I'm kind of hopeful but also cautious. She's just doing
- 23:36Speaker 1: a lot, and eventually they she winds up distracting all
- 23:44Speaker 1: of them by pointing out this island, and she goes
- 23:47Speaker 1: and frees mister nine, and they jump off the ship together,
- 23:52Speaker 1: and they wind up back on the island with our
- 23:55Speaker 1: friends a little bit later on. And I just need
- 23:59Speaker 1: to mention that, like mister nine, he's very annoying, don't
- 24:08Speaker 1: get me wrong, but bro is really giving. Like if
- 24:16Speaker 1: you look up the Mister nine in the anime, it's uncanny.
- 24:21Speaker 1: First of all their appearance, like wow, but the whole
- 24:28Speaker 1: energy of petulance and sarcasm and everything, and the way
- 24:34Speaker 1: that sort of just falls totally to the wayside when
- 24:39Speaker 1: he is put to the question leader and says, she
- 24:44Speaker 1: may be a trader, but she's still my partner and
- 24:46Speaker 1: I would never betray her. It's such a weird moment
- 24:50Speaker 1: where I feel like it kind of comes out of
- 24:53Speaker 1: nowhere a little bit. But also it gives him the
- 24:58Speaker 1: tiniest extra mention that I really liked this as the
- 25:05Speaker 1: final moment for him. You know, what a weird role
- 25:11Speaker 1: must have been something to play this guy. So let's
- 25:15Speaker 1: jump ahead to our friends landing on Whiskey Peak. The
- 25:20Speaker 1: whole energy here is identical to what I remember from
- 25:24Speaker 1: the anime of Everybody just eyeballing them and seeming really unfriendly,
- 25:29Speaker 1: and then eventually they're coming this moment of like celebratory,
- 25:34Speaker 1: We're so happy you're here, but it's still like I'm
- 25:38Speaker 1: watching it going something about this just isn't right, and
- 25:43Speaker 1: that vibe is there throughout. It's all the whole time.
- 25:47Speaker 1: You can tell something isn't right, you know, But also
- 25:54Speaker 1: you're just sort of like, to what end are? What
- 25:56Speaker 1: would we even be lying about all of this? And
- 26:01Speaker 1: I liked the way it was all set up, and
- 26:04Speaker 1: I felt like it's just the right amount of like foreshadowing,
- 26:09Speaker 1: and things that could feel like foreshadowing or could be
- 26:15Speaker 1: if you look back at them, a bit of a
- 26:17Speaker 1: red herring. So if you're not sure what's about to
- 26:20Speaker 1: happen here because you haven't seen the anime, you could
- 26:23Speaker 1: feel like, am I being paranoid?
- 26:24Speaker 2: Like what the fuck?
- 26:25Speaker 1: You know? So we run into what is his name?
- 26:32Speaker 1: Igorrem with the fucking roll hair wigs. I mean, I
- 26:40Speaker 1: remember in the anime, at first this guy turns up
- 26:45Speaker 1: and I was sort of into it, and then I
- 26:48Speaker 1: don't remember what happened, but we crossed the threshold where
- 26:50Speaker 1: I was sort of like, ah, this guy's annoying me now,
- 26:54Speaker 1: and then we had guns come out of his curls
- 27:01Speaker 1: and I turned a corner again. I was like, never mind,
- 27:04Speaker 1: I'm back on board. So, you know, I feel like
- 27:09Speaker 1: they managed to keep me on his side more than
- 27:14Speaker 1: the anime, just because it's the virtue of time again
- 27:19Speaker 1: and the fact that it wasn't dragged out so badly.
- 27:22Speaker 1: But I yeah, I definitely remember when the guns poke
- 27:27Speaker 1: out of his hair, just having a moment of like,
- 27:30Speaker 1: what is happening? Like it's one of the first times
- 27:34Speaker 1: that I really understood how truly bonkers one piece was
- 27:41Speaker 1: willing to get about weird stuff.
- 27:44Speaker 2: You know, it was just a moment.
- 27:46Speaker 1: So we meet him and he tells them that, like,
- 27:52Speaker 1: it's easier for us to be nice to pirates and
- 27:55Speaker 1: to welcome them because we're the first island when people
- 27:58Speaker 1: come to the Grand Line, and so we have to
- 28:01Speaker 1: deal with pirates all the time, and it just doesn't
- 28:05Speaker 1: make sense to constantly be fighting for our fucking lives.
- 28:09Speaker 1: Which I believe that it's Zorro who kind of nods
- 28:14Speaker 1: and is like that actually does make sense. Now, guys,
- 28:17Speaker 1: remind me in the anime, the way that has played
- 28:24Speaker 1: in this is that Zorro pretends to get really drunk
- 28:31Speaker 1: and sort of draws the enemy out by acting as
- 28:35Speaker 1: if he is not in control of his faculties, and
- 28:37Speaker 1: thus this is the perfect opportunity for them to jump him,
- 28:40Speaker 1: and he jumps them back and is just like, ha ha,
- 28:42Speaker 1: you really thought. Does is that how it works in
- 28:47Speaker 1: the anime as well? Or does he actually get drunk
- 28:51Speaker 1: and then just fights while drunk, because I can't remember.
- 28:57Speaker 1: I feel like I remember him actually getting drunk, but
- 29:03Speaker 1: it may very well be that I'm just remembering him
- 29:06Speaker 1: putting on the act of being drunk, and that's what
- 29:09Speaker 1: it is that I'm thinking of. I don't recall. So sorry,
- 29:16Speaker 1: oh now was here? Hi? Seraphim says more or less,
- 29:19Speaker 1: getting Zora drunk would take more booze than they have
- 29:21Speaker 1: on this island. Okay, so he did the same, sort
- 29:26Speaker 1: of like he was suspicious and sort of pretended to
- 29:29Speaker 1: have let his guard down. Okay. And yeah, everybody's like
- 29:33Speaker 1: getting into their own shit here because we have this
- 29:35Speaker 1: whole bar scene with Igram playing the saxophone. I will
- 29:43Speaker 1: mention that Florian in his DM to me on discord,
- 29:47Speaker 1: where he said that he wasn't going to be able
- 29:48Speaker 1: to make it today said that he has been listening
- 29:50Speaker 1: to that saxophone song like frequently, and I find that
- 29:55Speaker 1: really really funny. But uh, he like, we have what
- 30:03Speaker 1: do you call it, Loofy, who of course is eating
- 30:08Speaker 1: a ton and then eventually he wants something sweet and
- 30:11Speaker 1: he saw a bakery, so his decision is to go
- 30:15Speaker 1: and break into the bakery. And when we finally go
- 30:19Speaker 1: see him, he's eating an apple pie right out of
- 30:25Speaker 1: the pie pan. But it's got that crust on top.
- 30:28Speaker 1: This is like one of those things that as somebody
- 30:32Speaker 1: who does like to bake, but who also is like
- 30:35Speaker 1: I understand we're trying to kind of go for a
- 30:38Speaker 1: cartoonish look here. The crust is like seven inches tall,
- 30:46Speaker 1: but the filling on the inside of the pie is
- 30:49Speaker 1: below average height. It doesn't even reach the top of
- 30:53Speaker 1: the pie plate. So it's just this like huge mound
- 30:58Speaker 1: of empty crust. And it's such a weird choice to
- 31:05Speaker 1: me to make it look like that, Like what, why?
- 31:08Speaker 1: For what reason? And I know why. I know it's
- 31:10Speaker 1: because it's a prop and it's meant to be over exaggerated,
- 31:15Speaker 1: as so many things in this show are. But it
- 31:18Speaker 1: just very much distracted me because it's like, the implication
- 31:21Speaker 1: is we had that much apple in here for the
- 31:25Speaker 1: crust to be that high and then all baked down
- 31:29Speaker 1: to be only about an inch. Hi, it's crazy. And
- 31:32Speaker 1: he's eating this apple pie and comparing it with rhubarb pie,
- 31:37Speaker 1: deciding which he likes better. I will say rhubarb strawberry
- 31:39Speaker 1: is like one of my favorite I love sourness, and
- 31:42Speaker 1: that is just unbeatable. And he gets interrupted by Igram here,
- 31:47Speaker 1: and he's like very guilty because he thinks that, oh,
- 31:50Speaker 1: it looks like I'm stealing, when really it's like what
- 31:57Speaker 1: he doesn't understand here is that he is about to
- 32:01Speaker 1: get got because Viv and Igorm don't understand who Loufy is,
- 32:09Speaker 1: and so as much as they don't want to hurt him,
- 32:14Speaker 1: they begin to fight him because they are assuming that
- 32:17Speaker 1: he is just a pirate like any other pirate. Aingram
- 32:23Speaker 1: has a sense that Lufy is a little bit different
- 32:25Speaker 1: because Lufy explains what he's been up to and Igram
- 32:28Speaker 1: says something like it sounds like you help people, and
- 32:33Speaker 1: Lufy is just sort of like yeah, in a way
- 32:38Speaker 1: that's like I'm not I don't understand why that's surprising
- 32:44Speaker 1: to you, almost like he doesn't. This is sort of
- 32:48Speaker 1: something that I took issue with when I first started
- 32:51Speaker 1: the series, was the fact that he keeps saying I
- 32:55Speaker 1: want to be King of the Pirates when the point
- 32:58Speaker 1: of who pirates are is supposed to be that they steal,
- 33:01Speaker 1: They will kill you and steal from you, and that's
- 33:03Speaker 1: what makes you a pirate, is the fact that you
- 33:05Speaker 1: are willing to do illegal stuff and take things from people.
- 33:11Speaker 1: That's the whole thing. So I was really like frustrated
- 33:15Speaker 1: when I started watching with the fact that Louvi kept
- 33:17Speaker 1: being like, well, there's more than one kind of pirate,
- 33:20Speaker 1: and I was like, there really isn't. There is just
- 33:22Speaker 1: what pirates are, and that's it. And then it was
- 33:26Speaker 1: explained to me that like what Oda saw as another
- 33:30Speaker 1: kind of pirate is just somebody who wants to be
- 33:33Speaker 1: in charge of their own destiny and free and roaming
- 33:37Speaker 1: and it's sort of like a vagabond idea more than
- 33:43Speaker 1: you know. So it's like just a different concept, but
- 33:48Speaker 1: there isn't really a great word for it other than pirate.
- 33:55Speaker 1: And so yeah, it's like Lovi's still have to sort
- 34:00Speaker 1: of explain to folks that well, I'm not that kind
- 34:05Speaker 1: of pirate, And there's something about seeing in this world
- 34:10Speaker 1: that it's a similar thing for everyone as it is
- 34:15Speaker 1: for me, where they're sort of like, but wait, dude,
- 34:19Speaker 1: pirate means such and such and he's like, no, it doesn't.
- 34:22Speaker 1: And they are having the same reaction that I did,
- 34:24Speaker 1: where I'm like, yeah, it does. It's literally what it means,
- 34:27Speaker 1: and he's just insisting no, no, no, no no no, like
- 34:30Speaker 1: maybe for some people, but that's not for me, you know,
- 34:36Speaker 1: Sarahim says them, adding in a bakery of all things,
- 34:39Speaker 1: It's almost surreal and many people have been trying to
- 34:41Speaker 1: figure out if this was a deliberate shout out to Tecking,
- 34:44Speaker 1: one of the biggest one piece YouTubers, who has a
- 34:46Speaker 1: running gag that any character whose fate we don't know
- 34:49Speaker 1: just went off to start a bakery that started with
- 34:52Speaker 1: the baroque work agents. What a weird okay. I like
- 34:58Speaker 1: that idea of just it being like a nod somebody
- 35:01Speaker 1: one of the biggest one piece YouTubers. What does a
- 35:04Speaker 1: one piece YouTuber do? What is that?
- 35:08Speaker 2: Like?
- 35:08Speaker 1: How do you know? Do they just go through? Because
- 35:11Speaker 1: I'm imagining they're not unspoiled. They must have seen the
- 35:14Speaker 1: whole show already. Do they go back through it and everything? Like?
- 35:16Speaker 1: How what? I guess the show's still on, so you
- 35:21Speaker 1: can also just like review the episodes as they come out.
- 35:25Speaker 1: Seraphim says, pirate in this setting is just someone who
- 35:27Speaker 1: doesn't let the world government tell them what to do,
- 35:29Speaker 1: which they can't be having people think that way, but
- 35:31Speaker 1: most of them are assholes all around. Michael says, do
- 35:35Speaker 1: what you do, but on YouTube. But if they are
- 35:37Speaker 1: like a big if they're a one piece YouTuber, they
- 35:42Speaker 1: explicitly cannot do what I do.
- 35:44Speaker 2: But on YouTube?
- 35:45Speaker 1: Do you get what I'm saying? Like it just doesn't
- 35:51Speaker 1: that this is something that I think about a lot,
- 35:53Speaker 1: you guys. I am really really lucky in that I
- 35:58Speaker 1: can have all of these different properties that I'm covering
- 36:01Speaker 1: all the time, and once I reached the end of
- 36:03Speaker 1: a property, there's something else I can move on to.
- 36:06Speaker 1: But there are a lot of people out there who
- 36:07Speaker 1: they center their whole brand around one fandom and one property,
- 36:13Speaker 1: And at times I've been very jealous of that because
- 36:15Speaker 1: I really do understand the appeal of dominating a particular
- 36:21Speaker 1: like niche area. But after what happened with Harry Potter
- 36:26Speaker 1: where I was one of the most popular podcasts out
- 36:29Speaker 1: there about Harry Potter, and then JK. Rowling just decided
- 36:33Speaker 1: to take a giant shit in all of our mouths,
- 36:36Speaker 1: and I just couldn't take it anymore. I've really decided
- 36:39Speaker 1: I don't want to put my eggs all in one
- 36:41Speaker 1: fandom basket, you know, but I can, like one piece
- 36:47Speaker 1: has been running for so long that I'm just thinking about, Like,
- 36:52Speaker 1: don't you run out of things to say about it?
- 36:55Speaker 1: You know. It's not like I'm gonna eventually reach the
- 36:59Speaker 1: point where I've caught up at some point, and I
- 37:02Speaker 1: assume from then I'll be watching like along with you guys,
- 37:06Speaker 1: which will be weird, but I'll also have all this
- 37:10Speaker 1: other stuff that I'm doing. It won't be just that.
- 37:12Speaker 1: But if that's your whole YouTube, you've got to like
- 37:16Speaker 1: make content out of nowhere, you know. I'm just wondering
- 37:21Speaker 1: about it because there's a lot of people out there who,
- 37:23Speaker 1: you know, it's like, oh, this is theirs. They have
- 37:25Speaker 1: a supernatural YouTube, Like what do you feel that with?
- 37:30Speaker 2: What?
- 37:30Speaker 1: How much is there to say? How much is there
- 37:33Speaker 1: to share about it? I don't know, I'm sorry. Ser
- 37:39Speaker 1: Francis reviews for the chapters as they come out, and
- 37:42Speaker 1: in Teching's case, talk about damn near anything and can
- 37:45Speaker 1: manage to make a video on a tree take up
- 37:47Speaker 1: nearly half an hour and be interesting all around nice
- 37:51Speaker 1: and see this is that that is more like what
- 37:55Speaker 1: I do of Just like you know, I'm just gonna
- 37:58Speaker 1: I'm gonna talk about what I feel like, and it's
- 38:01Speaker 1: going to take way too long, and I hope that
- 38:03Speaker 1: you're ready because that's just like my whole deal. Nehua says,
- 38:10Speaker 1: It's part of why I prefer your content over those
- 38:12Speaker 1: sorts of YouTubers. To be honest, I feel like some
- 38:14Speaker 1: of them are kind of forced into always loving the product,
- 38:17Speaker 1: which makes them inherently less honest in my opinion. That's
- 38:21Speaker 1: an interesting point as well, is when you do become
- 38:25Speaker 1: such a niche person, like for a particular fandom, then
- 38:31Speaker 1: you run into this weird space where you're suddenly not
- 38:33Speaker 1: allowed to criticize it at all, or the fans see
- 38:36Speaker 1: you as some kind of trader and I just have
- 38:39Speaker 1: no interest. Everything has problems and I should be able
- 38:43Speaker 1: to talk about them honestly without it suddenly becoming well
- 38:46Speaker 1: why are you even covering this if you hate it
- 38:48Speaker 1: so much? Which is inevitably something that people will say
- 38:51Speaker 1: about things. And doing as many different properties as I
- 38:56Speaker 1: do does give me a lot of freedom in that way,
- 38:59Speaker 1: And and I do think it's part of why people
- 39:02Speaker 1: like commission me as well, is that they love something
- 39:06Speaker 1: and they want to share it, but they also are
- 39:08Speaker 1: aware there are issues and they would like to hear
- 39:11Speaker 1: my thoughts on those issues, you know. I think that's
- 39:13Speaker 1: part of the appeal. So yeah, anyway, I'm sorry, guys,
- 39:18Speaker 1: I'm all over the place. So Sanji winds up getting
- 39:24Speaker 1: seduced by these women. It's really funny, y'all to be
- 39:28Speaker 1: to be honest, it's uh. I kind of was like,
- 39:32Speaker 1: is he gonna be upset? Because what happens is these
- 39:35Speaker 1: two women who are flirting with him, and then they're like,
- 39:38Speaker 1: why don't we go somewhere a little bit more private?
- 39:40Speaker 1: And it looks like he's about to have these two
- 39:43Speaker 1: women to himself, and then one of them says, bring
- 39:46Speaker 1: your friend and points to us up, and he just
- 39:50Speaker 1: like rushes over to us up. Who's like, I'm in
- 39:52Speaker 1: the middle of a story, dude, And he has to
- 39:55Speaker 1: grab usup's face, and he says to him, I'm trying
- 40:01Speaker 1: to find the exact spot. Okay, here it is. These
- 40:03Speaker 1: two girls too. They are in very, very like different outfits.
- 40:09Speaker 1: One is in this like pink and white striped dress
- 40:12Speaker 1: and the other one is in all black. Oosop. When
- 40:17Speaker 1: two gorgeous women ask you to taste their finest, you
- 40:22Speaker 1: taste it, which is one of the filthiest lines I
- 40:27Speaker 1: think I've ever heard in something that is very clean, Like,
- 40:33Speaker 1: whoever wrote that line, well done, really well done. You
- 40:38Speaker 1: managed to fucking make that shit nasty, good for you.
- 40:43Speaker 1: And I was sort of like, is he going to
- 40:46Speaker 1: be mad that now he has to share because he
- 40:48Speaker 1: was about to have these two ladies all to himself. Nope,
- 40:50Speaker 1: he is not mad at all. He's just like Osop,
- 40:53Speaker 1: getting here, buddy, let's do this. So the two of
- 40:56Speaker 1: them are completely sidelined for almost this entire episode because
- 41:04Speaker 1: they just get taken up there and tied up, and
- 41:06Speaker 1: these girls evidently take their sweet fucking time, because they're
- 41:11Speaker 1: just standing there with knives by the time, like Zorro
- 41:16Speaker 1: goes up and cuts them loose and freeze them. It's
- 41:20Speaker 1: been a while and these women have had ample time
- 41:24Speaker 1: to commit homicide and they have not done it. So
- 41:28Speaker 1: my head canon is that they actually let oose up
- 41:35Speaker 1: and Sanji go down on them first. That's gonna be.
- 41:39Speaker 1: How I imagine this scene is that they were like, yeah,
- 41:43Speaker 1: let's do this, and they like hopped up on the
- 41:45Speaker 1: pool table or whatever, and they got themselves all settled
- 41:52Speaker 1: and then they jumped up and we're like, okay, now
- 41:53Speaker 1: it's your turn, and then they just tied them up,
- 41:55Speaker 1: and that was when they were gonna kill them. Was like, well,
- 41:58Speaker 1: I want to come first, Like, come on, you're both
- 42:02Speaker 1: very cute. We're here, it's private, Like let's just like
- 42:05Speaker 1: at least we can do that, you know. So that's
- 42:08Speaker 1: what I'm going with is what was going on in
- 42:11Speaker 1: the meantime there. So everybody in the chat saying like,
- 42:15Speaker 1: oh yeah, that works. So it's Nam who is the
- 42:24Speaker 1: one who like she's she's in a drinking contest with
- 42:29Speaker 1: a nun who, of course like isn't a nun. But
- 42:33Speaker 1: I was really surprised at this because it seems like
- 42:36Speaker 1: the nun actually had been drinking. She's later on like
- 42:41Speaker 1: up and about and fighting and stuff. I don't know
- 42:44Speaker 1: if it's supposed to be that she just has a
- 42:46Speaker 1: much higher tolerance, or if it's that she wasn't drinking,
- 42:50Speaker 1: she was tossing the liquor past her mouth. You know
- 42:54Speaker 1: what was going on here. But Nami manages to take
- 43:01Speaker 1: up I think she takes a bunch of this woman's
- 43:03Speaker 1: money because I think they're betting. And then she goes
- 43:06Speaker 1: off to the bathroom or something, and she winds up
- 43:08Speaker 1: accidentally coming across the bodies of some of the Tulip
- 43:12Speaker 1: Pirates who we had heard mentioned before, how these guys
- 43:18Speaker 1: were here yesterday and we had such a great time
- 43:21Speaker 1: with them. And you know, the way that we know
- 43:25Speaker 1: that they're the Tulip Pirates is that they literally have
- 43:28Speaker 1: got tulips coming out of the tops of their heads,
- 43:31Speaker 1: which is just so weird. What a weird show this is,
- 43:35Speaker 1: you guys. But yeah, this dude who brought them in here,
- 43:43Speaker 1: I think they're in like a wheelbarrow. He says something like,
- 43:46Speaker 1: you weren't supposed to have seen that. And when she says,
- 43:53Speaker 1: I thought you loved pirates, I knew this place was
- 43:56Speaker 1: too good to be true, he says, we let them
- 43:59Speaker 1: be who they really are, drunken, lecherous rogues, and then
- 44:05Speaker 1: we take advantage of that, so we have like the
- 44:07Speaker 1: whole uh monologue as he's saying this, while we go
- 44:14Speaker 1: over to all of our friends and see them being
- 44:16Speaker 1: drunken and leccherous, and he's like, but you know, we
- 44:20Speaker 1: let them have a really fun time first before we
- 44:24Speaker 1: kill them, so it's not like we're that cold hearted
- 44:27Speaker 1: after all. In the end, and Bro's got like a
- 44:33Speaker 1: fucking top hat, a long coat, and a shovel, so
- 44:37Speaker 1: it's supposed to be I guess that he's sort of
- 44:40Speaker 1: playing like an undertaker role here, but he's, you know,
- 44:43Speaker 1: the one in charge of the graveyard. He and Nami
- 44:48Speaker 1: get into it, and then we go to Zoro getting
- 44:51Speaker 1: like almost jumped, but then laying these guys out because
- 44:54Speaker 1: he's totally prepared. And when he goes back into the bar,
- 45:02Speaker 1: mister nine is speechifying from the balcony and he's talking
- 45:11Speaker 1: about I have it on good authority that whoever kills
- 45:15Speaker 1: Roanora Zorro will be fast tracked to frontier agent and
- 45:22Speaker 1: gets the whole crowd on board to try and take
- 45:25Speaker 1: Zoro out. And I love how much variety there is
- 45:31Speaker 1: amongst the weapons. We've got Axes, we've got hatchets, we've
- 45:36Speaker 1: got swords, we've got a couple guns, we've got hammers,
- 45:42Speaker 1: we've got knives. The hammers in particular interest me because
- 45:48Speaker 1: you have to get in so close, you know, And
- 45:52Speaker 1: this leads to the fight scene. And I have to
- 45:57Speaker 1: imagine that pretty much this took up all of the
- 46:04Speaker 1: filming time for this episode that they, like, all the
- 46:07Speaker 1: other scenes were filmed in one day, and then the
- 46:10Speaker 1: fight scene took two weeks. This scene is a very
- 46:16Speaker 1: very intense. I am not somebody who is like familiar
- 46:24Speaker 1: with the lingo in describing fight scenes. I don't want
- 46:28Speaker 1: to try and talk about the choreography in any sort
- 46:32Speaker 1: of detail, but I will say I love watching action
- 46:39Speaker 1: movies and action TV shows, and so I have grown
- 46:44Speaker 1: to be able to spot good fight scene choreography. And
- 46:49Speaker 1: I'll go back and watch old stuff sometimes that I
- 46:52Speaker 1: really liked, and seeing it with my adult eyes, I'm like, oh,
- 46:56Speaker 1: this is really not good. Like the choreography either isn't
- 46:59Speaker 1: great or it's edited to make it look like the
- 47:03Speaker 1: choreography is good. But if you can see through that,
- 47:06Speaker 1: you realize that these two moves that are edited together
- 47:09Speaker 1: actually had nothing to do with each other. This is
- 47:13Speaker 1: a really beautifully done sequence, especially considering how long it
- 47:18Speaker 1: is and the camera following him the way that it
- 47:21Speaker 1: does like this is a really I can't imagine how
- 47:29Speaker 1: exhausting this was. This has to be so physically demanding
- 47:35Speaker 1: to do the scene just once all the way through,
- 47:38Speaker 1: which isn't how it works. You have to do it
- 47:39Speaker 1: over and over and over and over and over and
- 47:41Speaker 1: over and over and over because they need to get
- 47:42Speaker 1: it from a bunch of different angles. Just the fucking
- 47:46Speaker 1: shape you have to be in, you know. And I
- 47:50Speaker 1: saw a brief like clip where it was the cast
- 47:55Speaker 1: playing like a game of how well do you know
- 47:57Speaker 1: each other? And they were talking about like, what's the
- 48:01Speaker 1: first thing that the director said to you? And the
- 48:06Speaker 1: first thing that he said to Zoro the actor playing Zoro,
- 48:10Speaker 1: was I'm gonna need you to give me a thicker neck,
- 48:16Speaker 1: which there's like it's just such a weird it's such
- 48:19Speaker 1: a weird request specifically, but it's also like there's something
- 48:22Speaker 1: kind of as a woman, the first thing that's often
- 48:26Speaker 1: said to us is simply like, you need to lose
- 48:28Speaker 1: some weight for this role. And it's simultaneously like reassuring
- 48:34Speaker 1: and depressing that men are evidently just on the receiving
- 48:38Speaker 1: end of that exact same thing of like there's something
- 48:40Speaker 1: wrong with your body that you're gonna need to fix.
- 48:43Speaker 1: But uh, anyway, Saraphim says, she was really drinking as
- 48:50Speaker 1: my take, and just didn't realize that n Me seems
- 48:52Speaker 1: to be utterly immune to the alcohol, but managed to
- 48:55Speaker 1: burn burn it off quickly. Because One Piece uh mckn
- 48:59Speaker 1: use Caro's actor insisted on there being one hundred unique
- 49:03Speaker 1: stuntman for this fight because he knew people would be counting.
- 49:06Speaker 1: He would be right about that. Huh, definitely, people would be.
- 49:11Speaker 1: Candas is here, Candace is I recently got into Wuxia.
- 49:14Speaker 1: Is that how wooshia stuff and the choreography is something else.
- 49:18Speaker 1: Anime fights are crazy. I thought they did such a
- 49:20Speaker 1: good job, Bernadette says. When the One Piece Live Action
- 49:25Speaker 1: Instagram account posted a clip of the fight, actor commented
- 49:29Speaker 1: that USOP actually took down one hundred and one people
- 49:32Speaker 1: on their way to the Mary, but it made the
- 49:33Speaker 1: episode too long and therefore had to be cut. That's fantastic.
- 49:37Speaker 1: I love this. I love the energy of staying in
- 49:40Speaker 1: character like that. Wushia says Candace. Okay, okay, yeah, it's
- 49:46Speaker 1: just like, look, I'm not trying to compare everything to
- 49:49Speaker 1: John Wick. John Wick is top tier choreography, though, like
- 49:54Speaker 1: it is, that's the whole movie. It's just a one
- 49:58Speaker 1: long fucking fight. And so watching many of those movies
- 50:04Speaker 1: at this point, there's like well four and there's Ballerina,
- 50:07Speaker 1: which I still haven't seen, there is just a certain
- 50:13Speaker 1: energy to that sort of fighting that feels grounded in
- 50:18Speaker 1: a way that you don't see as often. Many fight
- 50:23Speaker 1: scenes are there to make your main just look like
- 50:26Speaker 1: a complete badass, and that is what this scene functions
- 50:34Speaker 1: to do as well. Of course we're meant to see
- 50:38Speaker 1: the Zoro's a complete badass, yes, But it's also fun
- 50:42Speaker 1: because it's interspersed with fucking like all of this commentary
- 50:48Speaker 1: from his mental Mehawk, who's just like, oh you really
- 50:51Speaker 1: think you're something, don't you? Sixty guys, these guys are
- 50:54Speaker 1: fucking clowns. It is not impressive that you took these
- 50:57Speaker 1: dudes down. Please, let's all be very looking for real.
- 51:01Speaker 1: And I do enjoy that undercutting a little bit of
- 51:05Speaker 1: the like oh what a total bed as of just like, well,
- 51:09Speaker 1: if you actually know what fighting really is. You're not
- 51:12Speaker 1: that impressed. Actually, you know, this is just very much
- 51:16Speaker 1: how I am. I talked about this with Candae at
- 51:19Speaker 1: length the other day, just the whole phenomenon of like,
- 51:22Speaker 1: if somebody pays me a compliment, my first thing is like, yeah,
- 51:27Speaker 1: but do you even know enough to give me that compliment?
- 51:29Speaker 1: I doubt it, you know. So anyway, Meanwhile, we have
- 51:38Speaker 1: the whole fight with Loofy and and Igorm. I always
- 51:44Speaker 1: want to call him figure out and Viv and I
- 51:51Speaker 1: just really this actor and the way that he manages
- 51:54Speaker 1: to convey like the profound disappointment at the fact that
- 51:59Speaker 1: he was wrong about all of this. You know, it
- 52:03Speaker 1: is you really it manages to make you feel like
- 52:08Speaker 1: really sad, even though we know ultimately he will be
- 52:14Speaker 1: proven right, but in this moment, he's just very very
- 52:18Speaker 1: let down at the fact that he thought the It's
- 52:21Speaker 1: like disappointing your your goofy cool dad, you know. So
- 52:30Speaker 1: we reach a point where everybody is beginning to convene
- 52:34Speaker 1: in the center of town. Igorim gets this like mortal
- 52:38Speaker 1: wound that winds up making it a lot smarter for
- 52:42Speaker 1: him to stay behind and cover their back as they
- 52:45Speaker 1: get onto the marry and escape, and that is when
- 52:49Speaker 1: we have him unleashing his guns on Miss Valentine and
- 52:58Speaker 1: mister five right this, mister r And it's also the
- 53:03Speaker 1: first time that we actually see how mister Five's power works,
- 53:08Speaker 1: which I've been waiting for because I am so sorry,
- 53:13Speaker 1: but that is just the most fucking bonkers thing I
- 53:17Speaker 1: have ever seen. And the way that this man is
- 53:21Speaker 1: genuinely giving cool, you know, like he just looks so
- 53:28Speaker 1: fucking cool, and then he sticks a finger up his
- 53:31Speaker 1: nose and you're just like, excuse me, what what is happening?
- 53:36Speaker 1: And I would love to see the reaction of somebody
- 53:39Speaker 1: who didn't know this was coming, because like, what would
- 53:45Speaker 1: you think is happening? You know, like, because it's not
- 53:50Speaker 1: like in one Piece, there are lots of characters who's
- 53:52Speaker 1: just part of their personality is simply that they just
- 53:55Speaker 1: pick their nose a lot, and it's just a fucking
- 53:57Speaker 1: thing that is happening, you know. But then for that
- 54:02Speaker 1: to be the way he attacks, I mean, that's just
- 54:06Speaker 1: it's just so wild. So uh yeah, he gets blown up.
- 54:11Speaker 1: My question is is he actually dead? Spoilers in the
- 54:19Speaker 1: TV show or the anime, He's not because like, almost
- 54:25Speaker 1: nobody ever really fucking dies in one piece, but our
- 54:32Speaker 1: sheep guy last season didn't actually die in the anime,
- 54:36Speaker 1: and he was sure fucking dead in this, So I
- 54:39Speaker 1: am kind of going to err on the side of
- 54:42Speaker 1: this dude is dead now. I think that they are
- 54:46Speaker 1: doing a thing where they are righting the wrongs of
- 54:50Speaker 1: the sacrifices that certain characters make being rendered totally pointless
- 54:55Speaker 1: by having them still be alive. And they're going, no,
- 55:01Speaker 1: it doesn't make any sense for there to be this
- 55:03Speaker 1: big moment and then to take that away from them
- 55:06Speaker 1: by them still being alive. We're gonna actually have them
- 55:09Speaker 1: be a martyr and have been killed because it isn't
- 55:15Speaker 1: like this person plays a huge role in things later
- 55:17Speaker 1: that we're gonna regret having killed them off, which you know,
- 55:22Speaker 1: it's certainly possible still that they might, I guess, because
- 55:25Speaker 1: shit's still happening and characters from forever ago wind up
- 55:29Speaker 1: coming back. I don't you know. Who knows. Maybe Iegaram
- 55:34Speaker 1: is gonna turn up in episode twelve hundred. What do
- 55:37Speaker 1: I know? But personally I am I was very pleased
- 55:45Speaker 1: that Mary actually is dead, not because I hate Mary
- 55:49Speaker 1: so much, It was just like we need for there
- 55:54Speaker 1: to be real consequences to things sometimes, especially if you're
- 55:57Speaker 1: doing live action, you have to have something grounding it
- 56:02Speaker 1: a bit more, you know. So I'm hopeful angerm is
- 56:07Speaker 1: going to have been genuinely blown to pieces here, But
- 56:13Speaker 1: if he's still alive, I'm not going to be like
- 56:18Speaker 1: mad about it. I think I'll just be sort of like,
- 56:21Speaker 1: that's boring. I wish you'd taken a stand on that
- 56:26Speaker 1: a little bit more, you know. Seraphim says Aram surviving
- 56:33Speaker 1: is one of the ones that makes the most sense.
- 56:34Speaker 1: He was killed by Robin, and his reveal that he
- 56:37Speaker 1: survived happens in the same episode where we find out
- 56:39Speaker 1: another person we thought she killed wasn't dead, as one
- 56:42Speaker 1: of our first signs of what.
- 56:43Speaker 2: She was really like.
- 56:45Speaker 1: Okay, I don't I genuinely don't remember those guys, So
- 56:48Speaker 1: I believe you y'all know which one I was the
- 56:52Speaker 1: most mad at. And it's coming up, and I I
- 56:58Speaker 1: feel like, if you're gonna keep igor I'm alive, this
- 57:01Speaker 1: next dude that I'm talking about better die. You better
- 57:05Speaker 1: kill that motherfucker because I will be pissed. I was
- 57:10Speaker 1: so mad, you guys, Oh my I still remember how
- 57:15Speaker 1: fucking pissed I was. I I didn't understand yet that like,
- 57:22Speaker 1: really nobody dies, so I thought for sure, you know,
- 57:30Speaker 1: Seraphims is now Pella is the one, unless they just
- 57:34Speaker 1: really lay into things and play up the survival so
- 57:36Speaker 1: hard it loops around into funny, which that is one
- 57:40Speaker 1: way to play it.
- 57:42Speaker 2: You know.
- 57:43Speaker 1: I just keep thinking about the fact that they just
- 57:46Speaker 1: completely they found a way to step around what's his
- 57:53Speaker 1: name and have me Hawk kill him and we just
- 57:57Speaker 1: were able to completely avoid that whole boring, fucking r
- 58:01Speaker 1: and they did it in a funny way where they
- 58:03Speaker 1: acknowledged it and also just didn't do it. So, you know,
- 58:08Speaker 1: Bernadette says, was a girl. Why are you using past tense?
- 58:11Speaker 1: Clearly you're still mad. I am still mad. Pelle was
- 58:14Speaker 1: just what a complete waste having that guy still be alive.
- 58:18Speaker 1: Oh anyway, I've already talked about the moment where mister
- 58:26Speaker 1: nine refuses to give up his partner and when they're
- 58:30Speaker 1: asking him for information as well, he's just like, guys,
- 58:34Speaker 1: I know you're gonna kill me anyway, So like, why
- 58:36Speaker 1: would I bother who fucking you know? And Miss Valentine
- 58:43Speaker 1: Stompson to death. So so that's that. And then we
- 58:51Speaker 1: have Vivi, who, of course you know, she sees Igorim
- 58:54Speaker 1: get blown up, and I think that her acting there
- 58:59Speaker 1: is verry sad. I feel like she really gets that
- 59:03Speaker 1: terrible disbelief grief across. And then we have her on
- 59:10Speaker 1: the ship looking at that handkerchief that has like a
- 59:14Speaker 1: symbol on it that I believe is meant to be
- 59:17Speaker 1: something that he wrote down that she ties around her hair,
- 59:21Speaker 1: and she finally reveals to all of the straw hats
- 59:27Speaker 1: who she is and gives them her full title and
- 59:32Speaker 1: explains about the fact that the Baroque works people are
- 59:36Speaker 1: for some reason trying to start civil war in her
- 59:38Speaker 1: country and she doesn't know why and they're trying to
- 59:41Speaker 1: figure it out. And then all of a sudden, these
- 59:49Speaker 1: flower petals begin to float through the air, and again
- 59:56Speaker 1: this actress guys the moment that she sees those flower pedals,
- 1:00:01Speaker 1: the way that she flips the fuck out. She sold
- 1:00:07Speaker 1: that shit so hard. I loved this moment so much.
- 1:00:14Speaker 1: She seems legitimately terrified. This is like, this is like
- 1:00:21Speaker 1: she stepped into a room and suddenly saw that there
- 1:00:23Speaker 1: was like a velociraptor in there with her that kind
- 1:00:27Speaker 1: of like wait, what, No, this can't be happening, Like
- 1:00:31Speaker 1: she really fucking knocked it out of the park. And
- 1:00:35Speaker 1: it makes Robin so scary to see her reaction to Robin,
- 1:00:41Speaker 1: you know. So then when the camera pulls back and
- 1:00:45Speaker 1: we see that Robin's just sitting there looking down on them,
- 1:00:51Speaker 1: and she says, this is quite a ship you have here,
- 1:00:57Speaker 1: And that's the end of the episode. Is it's just
- 1:01:00Speaker 1: her looking down on them and smiling and her fucking
- 1:01:04Speaker 1: cowboy hat, and it's a great moment. I really liked it.
- 1:01:09Speaker 1: It's uh so far liking VV. She's crying appropriately. This
- 1:01:17Speaker 1: is a far cry, pun intended, from the type of
- 1:01:21Speaker 1: crying that we saw the VV in the anime do,
- 1:01:24Speaker 1: which I just found extremely and endlessly irritating. So for now,
- 1:01:30Speaker 1: we're all right, we're giving viv at this point in
- 1:01:34Speaker 1: the story. I'm giving her a nine out of ten.
- 1:01:37Speaker 1: I really like her. I think her acting is great,
- 1:01:40Speaker 1: I think her motivation seemed clear, and all of this
- 1:01:44Speaker 1: right now as it stands, is very much working. So
- 1:01:50Speaker 1: thumbs up for this version of VIVV The VV in
- 1:01:55Speaker 1: the anime can go die in a fire, all right?
- 1:02:00Speaker 1: I gotta wrap up, guys. I'm so over time, but
- 1:02:03Speaker 1: thank you all so much for listening following along. Thank
- 1:02:07Speaker 1: you to Bernadette and Florian for commissioning this, and until
- 1:02:11Speaker 1: next time.
- 1:02:12Speaker 2: To delude motherfuckers, that was
- 1:02:50Speaker 1: An unspoiled network podcast
