- 0:00Chapter four, The Cylinder opens. When I returned to the common, the
- 0:07sun was setting. Scattered groups were hurrying from the direction of Woking, and
- 0:12one or two persons were returning. The crowd about the pit had increased and
- 0:18stood out black against the lemon yellow of the sky. A couple of hundred
- 0:22people perhaps. There were raised voices, and some sort of struggle appeared to
- 0:28be going on about the pit. Strange imaginings passed through my mind. As
- 0:34I drew nearer. I heard Sten's voice, keep back, keep back.
- 0:40A boy came running towards me. It's a movin, he said to me,
- 0:44as he passed a screwin and a screwin out. I don't like it.
- 0:49I'm a goin, O, my am. I went on to the
- 0:52crowd. There were really, I should think two or three hundred people elbowing
- 0:58and jostling one another, the one or two ladies there being, by no
- 1:02means the least active. He's fallen in the pit, cried someone. Keep
- 1:07back, said several. The crowd swayed a little, and I elbowed my
- 1:14way through. Everyone seemed greatly excited. I heard a peculiar humming sound from
- 1:21the pit. I say said Ogilvy, Help keep these idiots back. We
- 1:26don't know what's in the confounded thing, you know. I saw a young
- 1:30man, a shop assistant in Woking. I believe he was standing on the
- 1:34cylinder and trying to scramble out of the hole. Again. The crowd had
- 1:38pushed him in the end of the cylinder was being screwed out from within.
- 1:46Nearly two feet of shining screw projected. Somebody blundered against me, and I
- 1:52narrowly missed being pitched on to the top of the screw. I turned,
- 1:57and as I did so, the screw must have come out, for the
- 2:00lid of the cylinder fell upon the gravel with a ringing concussion. I stuck
- 2:06my elbow into the person behind me and turned my head towards the thing again.
- 2:10For a moment, that circular cavity seemed perfectly black. I have the
- 2:15sunset in my eyes. I think everyone expected to see a man emerge,
- 2:22possibly something a little unlike us terrestrial men, but in all essentials a man.
- 2:28I know I did, But looking I presently saw something stirring within the
- 2:35shadow, grayish billowy movements one above another, and then two luminous disks like
- 2:42eyes. Then something resembling a little gray snake about the thickness of a walking
- 2:47stick, coiled up out of the writhing middle and wriggled in the air towards
- 2:53me. And then another a sudden chill came over me. There was a
- 2:59loud shriek from a woman behind. I half turned, keeping my eyes fixed
- 3:04upon the cylinder, still from which other tentacles were now projecting, and began
- 3:08pushing my way back from the edge of the pit. I saw astonishment giving
- 3:14place to horror on the faces of the people about me. I heard inarticulate
- 3:19exclamations on all sides. There was a general movement backwards. I saw the
- 3:25shopman struggling still on the edge of the pit. I found myself alone,
- 3:31and saw the people on the other side of the pit running off stent among
- 3:36them. I looked again at the cylinder, and ungovernable terror gripped me.
- 3:42I stood petrified and staring. A big, grayish, rounded bulk, the
- 3:50size perhaps of a bear, was rising slowly and painfully out of the cylinder.
- 3:55As it bulged up and caught the light, it glistened like wet leather.
- 4:02Two large, dark colored eyes were regarding me steadfastly. The mass that
- 4:09framed them. The head of the thing was rounded and had one might say,
- 4:15a face. There was a mouth under the eyes, the lipless brim
- 4:19of which quivered and panted and dropped saliva. The whole creature heaved and pulsated
- 4:27convulsively. A lank, tentacular appendage gripped the edge of the cylinder, another
- 4:32swayed in the air. Those who have never seen a living Martian can scarcely
- 4:40imagine the strange horror of its appearance. The peculiar, v shaped mouth with
- 4:46its pointed upper lip, the absence of brow ridges, the absence of a
- 4:50chin beneath the wedge like lower lip, the incessant quivering of this mouth,
- 4:57the gorgon groups of tentacles, the tumultuous breathing of the lungs in a strange
- 5:02atmosphere, the evident heaviness and painfulness of movement due to the greater gravitational energy
- 5:10of the Earth. Above all, the extraordinary intensity of the immense eyes were
- 5:16at once vital, intense, inhuman, crippled and monstrous. There was something
- 5:26fungoid in the oily brown skin, something in the clumsy deliberation of the tedious
- 5:31movements, unspeakably nasty. Even at this first encounter, this first glimpse,
- 5:40I was overcome with disgust and dread. Suddenly the monster vanished. It had
- 5:46toppled over the brim of the cylinder and fallen into the pit with a thud,
- 5:50like the fall of a great mass of leather. I heard it give
- 5:56a peculiar thick cry, and forthwith another these creatures appeared darkly in the deep
- 6:01shadow of the aperture. I turned, and, running madly, made for
- 6:08the first group of trees, perhaps a hundred yards away. But I ran
- 6:12slantingly and stumbling, for I could not avert my face from these things.
- 6:18There, among some young pine trees and furze bushes, I stopped panting and
- 6:25waited further developments. The common round the sand pits was dotted with people,
- 6:30standing, like myself in a half fascinated terror, staring at these creatures,
- 6:36or rather at the heaped gravel at the edge of the pit in which they
- 6:40lay. And then, with a renewed horror, I saw a round black
- 6:46object bobbing up and down on the edge of the pit. It was the
- 6:50head of the shopman who had fallen in but showing as a little black object
- 6:55against the hot western sun. Now he got his shoulder and knee up,
- 7:00and again he seemed to slip back until only his head was visible. Suddenly
- 7:06he vanished, and I could have fancied a faint shriek had reached me.
- 7:12I had a momentary impulse to go back and help him, that my fears
- 7:15overruled. Everything was then quite invisible, hidden by the deep pit and the
- 7:21heap of sand that the fall of the cylinder had made. Anyone coming along
- 7:28the road from Chobham or Woking would have been amazed at the sight a dwindling
- 7:32multitude of perhaps a hundred people or more standing in a great irregular circle,
- 7:38in ditches, behind bushes, behind gates and hedges, saying little to one
- 7:45another, and that in short excited shouts, and staring, staring hard at
- 7:50a few heaps of sand. The barrow of ginger beer stood a queer,
- 7:57derelict, black against the burning sky. And in the sand pits was a
- 8:01row of deserted vehicles, with their horses feeding out of nose bags or pouring
- 8:05the ground. End of Section four
