- 0:53again.
- 0:54Definitely.
- 0:55So are you a performer full time, or do you have a regular job, and this is more hobbyist
- 0:59stuff?
- 0:59This is well, this is my long term hobby.
- 1:02Yeah.
- 1:02Yeah.
- 1:03I am an accountant by day, and and then I go and have fun at night.
- 1:07That's fantastic.
- 1:08I also need an accountant too, so nice to know.
- 1:11We got one in the family.
- 1:13Wink.
- 1:13Wink.
- 1:13Yes.
- 1:14I can see the organizational email now.
- 1:16Yeah.
- 1:17While we're putting it out there.
- 1:18Mhmm.
- 1:19Well, Sam, so many questions.
- 1:22I could start with the shoes.
- 1:24You like them?
- 1:24I love them, actually.
- 1:26I was trying to think of what to wear, and and I thought, what would make this special today?
- 1:30Yeah.
- 1:31And then it was like I don't know.
- 1:33The ruby slippers, silver Yeah.
- 1:35Obviously.
- 1:36Well and I will tell you that anything that I'm involved with that you are a part of sparkly is
- 1:41always better.
- 1:42So Yes.
- 1:43They don't call me entertainer of the year for nothing.
- 1:46You gotta have sparkles.
- 1:47That's right.
- 1:48You did win some awards this year, didn't you?
- 1:50It's been a busy year for me.
- 1:51That's awesome.
- 1:52Well, tell us a little bit about it.
- 1:53Give us the highlight reel.
- 1:54Oh, highlight reel.
- 1:56Entertainer of the year.
- 1:57Yeah.
- 1:58One of my songs won pop song of the year, which was really cool.
- 2:01And You
- 2:02can give her some claps for that.
- 2:04Yep.
- 2:05And I've just I've had a lot of fun.
- 2:07This actually, this coming February will march my or mark my thousandth show.
- 2:11So, yeah, it's gonna be really cool.
- 2:13You've been keeping track from, like, day one?
- 2:15Well, I have a spreadsheet.
- 2:17Oh, countants.
- 2:19Accountants.
- 2:20My goodness.
- 2:22I don't even know what a spreadsheet is.
- 2:24It's okay.
- 2:25I've got you.
- 2:25But my finances are a mess.
- 2:28Is that true?
- 2:29Oh, yeah.
- 2:29Hundred yeah.
- 2:30She doesn't even look at them anymore.
- 2:31Fair.
- 2:32It would give her a heart attack.
- 2:33Yeah.
- 2:35But, yeah, I've been doing this a very long time.
- 2:37This is probably my well, I've been playing since I was five.
- 2:40So I'm 30 how old am I?
- 2:4237 now.
- 2:43There you it's
- 2:43been a long time.
- 2:44But, yeah, actually, I've played here back when I was 17 when it was big Versus Yeah.
- 2:50So I've been in these neck of the woods a long time.
- 2:53That's awesome.
- 2:54And now here you are.
- 2:55Here
- 2:55I am with you.
- 2:56As the entertainer of the year.
- 2:58Sure.
- 2:59Amazing.
- 3:00I have fun.
- 3:01Well, don't you entertain us now?
- 3:03Alright.
- 3:03I will entertain you.
- 3:04Are you ready?
- 3:04It's Yep.
- 3:05It's kind of a dark song.
- 3:06Alright.
- 3:15Does that sound okay?
- 3:30You told me I should tear my walls down.
- 3:36Care for what you wish for.
- 3:38In my waters, you will drown.
- 3:42I know you're like them young and full of scars.
- 3:47So here we are.
- 3:53A lot of cigarette and breathe you in.
- 3:59You love me like your hangover from your tonic and your jean.
- 4:05You smell like leather and you smell like lace.
- 4:11One more drink, you're mine, and I'll take you from this place.
- 4:17It's okay.
- 4:18I've got my car outside.
- 4:52Home.
- 5:03How sweet you think you know just where we are.
- 5:20You slay your words and then say it sure if we don't have to talk.
- 5:26I check my coat revolver against my waist and away.
- 6:43Some say you know exactly Yeah.
- 8:20What I'm talking about.
- 8:22Yeah.
- 8:23So the first thing that any of our guitar players watching is that you're left handed.
- 8:28You play the guitar left handed at least.
- 8:29I don't know if you write that way.
- 8:30I write left handed too.
- 8:32Nowadays, they have guitars that are strung properly to the left hand, but you play it
- 8:37upside down.
- 8:38Yes.
- 8:38Can you talk about some of the challenges maybe that you faced learning how to play the guitar,
- 8:43not really having a lot of people to maybe watch and learn from because I think it's
- 8:47pretty obvious that most guitar players Right.
- 8:49Play, even if they write left handed, maybe play the guitar in a standard way.
- 8:54You know, truth be told, it's never really been an issue because I play by ear.
- 8:57I can't read music or do any of that.
- 8:59So for me, just playing, it's always just been the way I played.
- 9:03It was an accident that turned into a style.
- 9:06Where it does become a hindrance is with full bands because a lot of the especially bass
- 9:12players that I work with, they watch my hands, and they try to see where I am, and it's upside
- 9:17down for them.
- 9:18So it really yeah.
- 9:20It just it depends.
- 9:21I I'm very fortunate that the bass players that I do work with and other guitarists are pretty
- 9:26adept with following me and seeing where I am.
- 9:29Because they'll be like, what key are you in?
- 9:31I don't know.
- 9:32I'm here.
- 9:33Yeah.
- 9:34Well, and I just for me, even looking, I'm just like, I know that you're playing the e.
- 9:39Right?
- 9:39I know that's where you're at and the kind of where everybody it can be a lot more difficult
- 9:44in the different formations that you start making.
- 9:46As you start running around the fretboard and stuff, it gets it's just because you don't have
- 9:51the experience of seeing it.
- 9:52Right?
- 9:52Exactly.
- 9:53And I'm sure people that, you know, play with you more and more, they get more used to that
- 9:57as time goes on.
- 9:58But, yeah, that was obviously the first thing for me as a guitar player that I noticed.
- 10:01Was like, oh, wow.
- 10:02Not just left handed, but you're playing it in the upside down Jimi Hendrix style.
- 10:06Yeah.
- 10:07Well, I mean, I started like this when I was very little.
- 10:09Really?
- 10:09Playing it slide style.
- 10:11How long have you been playing guitar?
- 10:13Thirty two years.
- 10:15Wow.
- 10:15So you started playing at five years old and and messing around on it.
- 10:18That's awesome.
- 10:18Terrible for the first seven years.
- 10:20Yeah.
- 10:20Just wanna
- 10:20point that out.
- 10:21So was I, and I started at 15.
- 10:22Excellent.
- 10:23Yeah.
- 10:24Yeah.
- 10:24It's not good.
- 10:25It's way harder to suck at 22 than it is at 12.
- 10:28I can imagine.
- 10:29Yes.
- 10:29Yeah.
- 10:30At least as a guitar player.
- 10:31Yeah.
- 10:32It's okay.
- 10:33Nice.
- 10:33So what have you been up to lately?
- 10:36I mean, we do you had all the award shows and did all stuff?
- 10:39You still play in shows all the time and keeping on the grind?
- 10:42Yeah.
- 10:42Trying to.
- 10:43I'm I'm very fortunate.
- 10:44I have music as as my one, like, social outlet.
- 10:48So I do that, and I play as often as I can.
- 10:51And the only thing that ever you were touching on it a little with Eli was the idea of not
- 10:56playing covers.
- 10:57That's my whole thing.
- 10:57I do not play covers.
- 10:59And so it's very interesting, we'll use that word, to find venues that support original live
- 11:04music.
- 11:05Right.
- 11:05Yeah.
- 11:06Right.
- 11:06Do you I mean, obviously, it wouldn't be hard.
- 11:08You say you play by ear.
- 11:09I'm sure you could figure these songs out, but for me, I'm a visual learner.
- 11:13So I'm I'm watching it and learning, like, to have to take that, and and it just seems like
- 11:17it would make the process so much longer not being able to just, oh, that's how you did it.
- 11:21Oh, yeah.
- 11:22Right?
- 11:22Yep.
- 11:22I mean, for me, like, even watching, you know, watching the old song remains the same.
- 11:27Right?
- 11:27The Led Zeppelin Yep.
- 11:28DVD.
- 11:29That was a tape back in the day.
- 11:30Right?
- 11:30But watching Jimmy Page play, I'm going, oh, that's how you did that.
- 11:35Like, there's that lick in different things.
- 11:37So, yeah, it just changes the whole game completely when you don't have that visual kind
- 11:42of a kickstand to lean against to do.
- 11:45Yep.
- 11:45Yeah.
- 11:46Interesting
- 11:47my own kickstand.
- 11:48That's right.
- 11:48That doesn't sound right.
- 11:49That's no wonder why you won entertainer of the year.
- 11:53It's the shoes.
- 11:54Yeah.
- 11:55Yeah.
- 11:55Definitely gotta be the shoes.
- 11:57Play us another one.
- 11:58Oh, sir.
- 11:59Okay.
- 11:59Hold on.
- 12:00I will do it.
- 12:05Alright.
- 12:05You wanna hear a soulful one?
- 12:07Yeah.
- 12:08Okay.
- 12:09This is my first song that got on the the big girl grown up radio.
- 12:12Oh.
- 12:13Yeah.
- 12:13They played on Cities.
- 12:14Cities ninety seven.
- 12:15Sweet.
- 12:15That's awesome.
- 12:19We'll see if our strings can stay in tune.
- 12:20This one is called Wendy Darling.
- 12:43I'm to a Wendy Dawson won't be okay.
- 13:07Wendy Dawson because people only let you down, break your heart, steal your crown for pride.
- 13:34Wendy Darling, look, there's a star.
- 13:44Wendy Darling, it's not very far.
- 14:20Those last boys you're looking for stole a boat and they rode to Short D.
- 14:29Because they don't know you like I do, and they won't stay and stick it through like
- 15:26Quite the juxtaposition from the first one.
- 15:29A little different.
- 15:29Yeah.
- 15:30Yeah.
- 15:30I love it.
- 15:30You got a huge range.
- 15:31Thank you.
- 15:32Yeah.
- 15:32Not just vocally,
- 15:33Oh, cool.
- 15:34Yeah.
- 15:34And your style.
- 15:35Do you think that not playing any covers and really having that as part of what you do kind
- 15:41of makes it easier to just be confident in writing and just continuing to do that.
- 15:45I think where a lot of songwriters get caught up or people that want to be songwriters is
- 15:50that they feel like their stuff maybe isn't good enough or or nobody's you know, those
- 15:54those kind of mental struggles that we feel.
- 15:56Do we feel like that?
- 15:57Do you feel that I mean, it's probably just who you are and who you've always been.
- 16:03But do you think that that kinda makes you a better songwriter, having that courage or just
- 16:08not knowing any better?
- 16:09I don't know.
- 16:10My spirit is actually way over there, like, crying because my guitar keeps going out of
- 16:14tune.
- 16:14So I think that we all, as performers and songwriters, I mean, you've got that little
- 16:19inkling in you that says that you're not good enough anyway.
- 16:22And and that's one of my things is it's a constant battle.
- 16:24You get up and play a song, and, I mean, I've had people tell me during, like, press junkets
- 16:29that I'm awful or, you know, you sound like a dying pigeon was one of my favorite ones.
- 16:33And I guess for me, I grab on to the people that really support me and the people that are
- 16:40cheering me on no matter if they're at a show or online or anything like that.
- 16:45And that's what I hold to that it means something to them.
- 16:48So, obviously, I am good enough.
- 16:50Exactly.
- 16:50Yeah.
- 16:51Exactly.
- 16:51You are good enough.
- 16:53Thanks, Bubba.
- 16:54Yeah.
- 16:54Well and it takes us to, you know, something that we've touched on a lot today.
- 16:58And over the course of, you know, this show is tapping into those small communities.
- 17:02You build your own community around yourself, and you build it out of love.
- 17:05Right.
- 17:05Right?
- 17:05Mhmm.
- 17:06And you just gotta forget about all that other nonsense because that's all it is.
- 17:09It's nonsense.
- 17:10I heard something really interesting last week, and I was at a business conference.
- 17:14And one of the keynote speakers was an actor and talked about when he was first going out to
- 17:19do auditions.
- 17:20And one of his acting coaches told him that 30% of the people are gonna like you no matter
- 17:26what.
- 17:26They're they're just gonna like you.
- 17:27They're gonna vibe with you.
- 17:28Right?
- 17:28They're gonna be on that.
- 17:29The other 30, you know, another 30% aren't gonna like you at all for whatever reason.
- 17:34You reminded them of your ex wife or ex husband or whatever, right, that you they're just not
- 17:40gonna like you, and the other 40% don't care.
- 17:42So go find your 30%.
- 17:43Yeah.
- 17:44Find your 30.
- 17:44Yeah.
- 17:45I mean, that's an excellent mantra to have because it's gonna save you a lot of self
- 17:48doubt, you know, going forward.
- 17:50I
- 17:51don't feel like you have much of that.
- 17:54Outwardly, I mean.
- 17:54You know, that's why you wear sparkles Yeah.
- 17:57To distract.
- 17:58Yeah.
- 17:59Well, I think and writing about the struggles is something that's really important.
- 18:05I know we touched on it with Tyler and stuff.
- 18:07Like, you have to write about what you go through as a songwriter because it's going to
- 18:11it's going to inform not just your audience, but it's going to inform you.
- 18:15And your style is gonna keep evolving and keep growing.
- 18:17And Right.
- 18:18I think we gotta get it out.
- 18:20I think we have to write more.
- 18:22I personally speaking from a personal standpoint, I need to be writing more.
- 18:25I need to be getting a lot of this stuff out there into the world.
- 18:28And whether it gets recorded and released and is a, you know, a hit or song, even, you know,
- 18:33maybe it's just an idea.
- 18:35Maybe the idea just needs to get out
- 18:36Yep.
- 18:36And then can sit there.
- 18:38You know, do you have songs?
- 18:39You've been doing this a long time.
- 18:40Do you have songs that you have kind of, you know, maybe written a piece of and and then
- 18:45maybe forgot about or left alone and have come back to and finished later?
- 18:48Have you that ever happened to you?
- 18:50Oh, yeah.
- 18:50Well, I wouldn't say that I've ever not finished a song.
- 18:53Usually, when I write, it all just comes out, and I've got a done song.
- 18:58There are songs that I finished and went, oh my god.
- 19:00That's terrible.
- 19:01And I chuck that over here, And then I'll come back to it two years later and think, why
- 19:05didn't I like this?
- 19:06It sounds great.
- 19:06And then I have ideas for additions or whatever in the full studio version.
- 19:10So I don't know.
- 19:11I always say what is that old adage that somebody will say to you that they have spilled
- 19:17more beer than you've drank?
- 19:18Right.
- 19:18That's how I feel with songs sometimes.
- 19:21I I've written more than than maybe people have heard.
- 19:23So yeah.
- 19:25That's amazing.
- 19:26Mhmm.
- 19:26Well, you wanna play us another one?
- 19:27I'll play one more.
- 19:29We'll go down to D Town.
- 19:30Alright.
- 19:31I don't know where D Town is.
- 19:33D Town, guys.
- 19:34You get it?
- 19:35Get a little joke for you?
- 19:40If music doesn't work out, Sam, you got a you got a future in stand up comedy for sure.
- 19:45You could do crowd work.
- 19:47Thank you.
- 19:47I like that.
- 19:49All my calls to Matt Reif have gone unanswered.
- 19:52For crowd working that mastered anyway.
- 19:54Oh, good.
- 19:54I'll tell him that you said that.
- 19:56When he's like, open for me.
- 19:57And I'll
- 19:58be like, I can't.
- 19:58Bubba like you.
- 20:01Just kidding.
- 20:01When this airs, they're gonna be like, wait.
- 20:03What?
- 20:04That might make us famous talking a little shit on Matt Rice.
- 20:07That's right.
- 20:08Exactly.
- 20:09We'll put it on Tyler's TikTok.
- 20:13Which I do watch all the time.
- 20:15I just wanna point that out.
- 20:16I am one of those creepy girls that stalk him.
- 20:18I think that's my favorite part about the Midwest CMO is that we're all such big fans of
- 20:22each other.
- 20:22Right?
- 20:23I I think there's more of us here that are here to see the other musicians more than to perform
- 20:28ourselves.
- 20:29Right?
- 20:29You've been here well before you needed to be to, I kinda told you to be here at that time.
- 20:34It's true.
- 20:34You did instruct me.
- 20:35Well, I didn't want you to miss Eli.
- 20:37I know you guys are friends.
- 20:38So
- 20:38See, that's the beauty of the Midwest CMO.
- 20:41We're all kinda buddy buddy.
- 20:42Yeah.
- 20:42And a lot of us have been part of things with that organization for a long time.
- 20:46So it's fun.
- 20:47And when there's new faces and I have a chance like, you and I have never met except for that
- 20:52Zoom call we were on.
- 20:53Mhmm.
- 20:54But now now we're best friends.
- 20:56She actually took my number, and we're gonna go out later.
- 20:58There you go.
- 21:02Alright.
- 21:02Here we go.
- 24:51Alright.
- 24:54Well, Sam, thank you so much.
- 24:56No.
- 24:56Thank you, Bubba.
- 24:57Coming over to see me.
- 24:58I would be happy to come to South Dakota if
- 25:01you have anything.
- 25:02On anytime.
- 25:02I think we got some gigs for
- 25:04I love it.
- 25:04They're there.
- 25:05You know, they call Chicago the windy city.
- 25:06I think South Dakota's got it beat.
- 25:08Yeah.
- 25:08We do.
- 25:09It's very windy Yeah.
- 25:10By far well, there's no big buildings to block it.
- 25:12So That's very true.
- 25:13Yeah.
- 25:13Nothing but wide open country.
- 25:14Yeah.
- 25:15It's nice when it snows.
- 25:16It just blows all into Iowa and Minnesota.
- 25:18It's perfect.
- 25:19I'm not gonna make the the blowing suck joke that normally people They won't invite me back
- 25:25to Iowa.
- 25:26Sam, why don't you tell everybody how they can find you?
- 25:29Sure.
- 25:30So if you go to samanthagrimesmusic.com, you can find all of my music and videos and all
- 25:35that stuff.
- 25:36Don't do samanthagrimes.com.
- 25:38She's a realtor in Maine.
- 25:39That's not me.
- 25:40She's very tired of getting messages from
- 25:42you guys.
- 25:43Goodness.
