Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: There was apparently a crocodile at Casarina Beach yesterday. It
- 0:03Speaker 1: was spotted on the Casarina Beach swimming up and down
- 0:06Speaker 1: the shoreline. I've seen a couple of videos and it
- 0:09Speaker 1: looks pretty frightening. Some reporting that it was following people
- 0:13Speaker 1: and their dogs walking along the beach. Now the public
- 0:16Speaker 1: apparently contacted the Crocodile Management Team to report the croc
- 0:20Speaker 1: and joining me on the line now to tell me
- 0:22Speaker 1: more about the situation is Kelly Ewan from the croc
- 0:26Speaker 1: Management Team. Good morning to you.
- 0:28Speaker 2: Kelly, Good morning Katie, thanks for having me online.
- 0:31Speaker 1: Yeah, good to have you on the show. Now, Kelly,
- 0:33Speaker 1: tell us what happened yesterday.
- 0:36Speaker 2: Yes, I ran met some thirty. We received a call
- 0:40Speaker 2: from remember the public just saying that crocodile sided at
- 0:45Speaker 2: the Kesina Beach area and apparently it had a crack
- 0:48Speaker 2: at someone's.
- 0:49Speaker 3: Dog but wasn't successful. So it was just hanging offshore
- 0:53Speaker 3: and just keeping.
- 0:54Speaker 2: An eye on.
- 0:56Speaker 1: Oh goodness, may thank goodness, it didn't get the dog.
- 1:00Speaker 1: So where exactly was that?
- 1:04Speaker 4: It was near the near that caf near the cafe there, Yeah, yeah,
- 1:12Speaker 4: and so did you get a few calls?
- 1:15Speaker 1: Kelly or was it just the one or were there
- 1:17Speaker 1: a few people that were pretty concerned after they'd spotted it.
- 1:20Speaker 2: Yeah, we received a few calls, so I've obviously started
- 1:23Speaker 2: to gather a bit of a crowd down there. So
- 1:25Speaker 2: we got moving as soon as we could. And yeah,
- 1:28Speaker 2: we went and had to look ourselves and.
- 1:31Speaker 1: Tell me, do you have any idea how big this
- 1:33Speaker 1: crocodile was? Look, just that it was about two and
- 1:38Speaker 1: a half meters about two and a half meters now,
- 1:41Speaker 1: Kelly in the end, were you and the croc management
- 1:44Speaker 1: team able to capture it?
- 1:47Speaker 2: No, o, Katie. So what we did was, obviously we
- 1:49Speaker 2: went down and just started that crocodile and we monitored
- 1:54Speaker 2: it just to watch its movements and ensure that it
- 1:57Speaker 2: wasn't going to hang around any longer. And if if
- 2:00Speaker 2: it was in that way, we would deploy a boat
- 2:04Speaker 2: and obviously go on an attempt to try and catch it.
- 2:06Speaker 1: Yeah. Right, So at this point in time, do you like,
- 2:09Speaker 1: is the understanding that it sort of swum away and
- 2:12Speaker 1: gone a distance away now from Casarina Beach or what
- 2:15Speaker 1: do you reckon it's done?
- 2:18Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 2:18Speaker 3: Look, obviously we watched the swim away and there's there's
- 2:24Speaker 3: a couple of traps close by, so yeah, there's one
- 2:28Speaker 3: just near Sandy Creek and another one in the harbor,
- 2:31Speaker 3: So obviously we're hoping it goes into.
- 2:35Speaker 2: One of them traps.
- 2:36Speaker 1: Yeah, well, so when do you go and check those traps?
- 2:38Speaker 1: Any idea if you haven't caught it yet as far
- 2:40Speaker 1: as you know, not.
- 2:43Speaker 2: At the moment. We're at on a trap run now,
- 2:46Speaker 2: so we're hoping we get something soon.
- 2:48Speaker 1: Yeah, well, you'll have to let us know, keep us
- 2:50Speaker 1: up to date if you know, if you do end
- 2:53Speaker 1: up capturing it. But I guess that this type of
- 2:55Speaker 1: thing happens pretty often. Like it's all in the all
- 2:58Speaker 1: in the day's work, isn't it for you guys on
- 3:00Speaker 1: the croc management team. Yeah?
- 3:03Speaker 2: Absolutely, And like you know, we say it all the
- 3:05Speaker 2: time that crocodiles are always around and with the weather
- 3:08Speaker 2: woman up there becoming more active, and you know, all
- 3:12Speaker 2: the waterways and the territory, there is going to be
- 3:15Speaker 2: crocodiles and you're pretty you're in crop country, so you
- 3:18Speaker 2: just have to be smarter about entering the water.
- 3:21Speaker 1: Yeah, you really do. And and I suppose it's also
- 3:24Speaker 1: a bit of a lesson as well for people like,
- 3:25Speaker 1: you've got to be smart or got to take care
- 3:28Speaker 1: even if you're out walking the dogs. And I know
- 3:30Speaker 1: that sometimes people sort of let the kids paddle around
- 3:33Speaker 1: in that area that's quite close to the beach as well,
- 3:36Speaker 1: don't they. Yeah.
- 3:38Speaker 2: Absolutely, looks again, you're just you're going to be crop white. Obviously,
- 3:44Speaker 2: weather warming up, they're going to be more active.
- 3:46Speaker 1: So and Kelly, what about when, like when there is
- 3:49Speaker 1: quite a bit of rain about like there is today.
- 3:52Speaker 1: I'm assuming that, you know, because we do face that
- 3:54Speaker 1: humidity and do have that hot weather, you know, before
- 3:57Speaker 1: the downpour arrives, that that is when the crocodiles are
- 4:00Speaker 1: on the move.
- 4:02Speaker 2: Yeah. Absolutely, And like I said that, with the water
- 4:04Speaker 2: warming up, they're becoming more active and people are going
- 4:08Speaker 2: to see a lot more crocodiles within the harbor.
- 4:11Speaker 1: Yeah. Mate, if anybody does see a crocodile that is
- 4:15Speaker 1: sort of you know, in an area where there are
- 4:16Speaker 1: a lot of people, like what happened yesterday at Casuarina,
- 4:19Speaker 1: is that the right steps for the public to take. Obviously,
- 4:22Speaker 1: get in contact with the croc management team and you know,
- 4:25Speaker 1: I go from there.
- 4:27Speaker 3: Yeah, that's right.
- 4:28Speaker 2: Just get in contact with the Crock Management Team, and
- 4:32Speaker 2: obviously don't go near and try to attack you to
- 4:36Speaker 2: try to trap it yourself. Just give us a call
- 4:38Speaker 2: and give us as much details as you can so
- 4:40Speaker 2: we can go and assess it accordingly.
- 4:43Speaker 1: Yeah, and Kelly, any other crocs around the place that
- 4:46Speaker 1: we should be aware of, I mean, they're always everywhere,
- 4:48Speaker 1: aren't they. Mate, Like it's it's a bit of a
- 4:50Speaker 1: stupid question, I guess to say, are there any around anywhere?
- 4:53Speaker 1: But they are everywhere, But any others that you've sort
- 4:57Speaker 1: of sighted of like that, people need to make sure
- 4:59Speaker 1: that they they take a bit of precaution around.
- 5:03Speaker 2: Look like you said, Kattie, they're everywhere, So just yeah,
- 5:06Speaker 2: just keep your eye out again big crop wise and
- 5:10Speaker 2: remember you're in crop country, so just have that about you.
- 5:13Speaker 1: I bet you're with Yeah, absolutely well, Kelly Unwind, it's
- 5:17Speaker 1: lovely to speak to you this morning. Mate. We really
- 5:19Speaker 1: appreciate your time from the crop Management team. Thank you
- 5:22Speaker 1: so much for having a chat with us.
- 5:25Speaker 2: No worries. Thanks Katie, have a good day you too.
- 5:27Speaker 1: Thank you
