- 3:16Speaker 5: forty years old, the problems of some.
- 3:19Speaker 2: Eighty thousand people who look after.
- 3:21Speaker 5: All it took was that phone call to make things
- 3:24Speaker 5: a nightmare.
- 3:26Speaker 2: As I said, the day was well just to day.
- 3:29Speaker 5: I remember, I was making up my mind to get
- 3:32Speaker 5: busy on the stuff piled.
- 3:33Speaker 2: On my desk.
- 3:34Speaker 5: It was nine fifteen, Molly mich Jordan, morning, Harvey. I
- 3:40Speaker 5: was just going to send for you. Don't tell me
- 3:42Speaker 5: that all this this heap is for me.
- 3:45Speaker 2: That's right. Well, isn't anybody weed it out?
- 3:47Speaker 1: It's been weeded, mister Jordan. Oh no, Well, if I must,
- 3:51Speaker 1: I must even a parcel. I see it's mark personal
- 3:55Speaker 1: from Paxton Brown, something rather Broadway, New York City.
- 4:00Speaker 2: Something I was ordered.
- 4:01Speaker 5: Oh oh, I remember, sure, this must be that new
- 4:03Speaker 5: type of loan sprinkler I ordered. I should have had
- 4:06Speaker 5: it sent to the house. Put it over there, would you.
- 4:08Speaker 5: I'll take it along with me when I go home here. Yeah,
- 4:10Speaker 5: that's fine.
- 4:13Speaker 2: Post Office, this is Jordan, Jordan, a postmaster Jordan. That's right.
- 4:16Speaker 2: What can I do for you?
- 4:17Speaker 3: Plenny? You got a bomb someplace in the mail down there?
- 4:20Speaker 2: What is this a joke?
- 4:22Speaker 3: This is no joke. Listen carefully. A guy I know
- 4:24Speaker 3: sends another guy a bomb, a time bomb. It'll be
- 4:27Speaker 3: delivered here in town.
- 4:28Speaker 4: It was supposed to be set to go off at
- 4:29Speaker 4: seven tonight, but I think you forgot the change of
- 4:31Speaker 4: the timer before he shipped. It's set for two thirty
- 4:34Speaker 4: this afternoon, five hours from now. I don't like that.
- 4:37Speaker 4: Maybe some poor guy like a mail man will get
- 4:39Speaker 4: it instead of the guy who's supposed to do.
- 4:40Speaker 3: That's why i'm telling you about it.
- 4:42Speaker 4: You got to fight it and stop it.
- 4:43Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 4:44Speaker 4: And another thing, it's fixed so it'll go off when
- 4:46Speaker 4: you open the package.
- 4:47Speaker 5: You got all that, sure, I got it, But well,
- 4:49Speaker 5: how do I recognize this bomb?
- 4:51Speaker 2: Who's it addressed to?
- 4:52Speaker 3: I ain't telling who sent it.
- 4:54Speaker 2: I don't care about who sent it. Who gets it?
- 4:56Speaker 3: Who gets it?
- 4:57Speaker 2: I am hello, Hello.
- 5:00Speaker 5: Don't hang up on me? Who gets the bomb? Don't
- 5:03Speaker 5: hang up? Look you're still there. I can hear you breathing.
- 5:06Speaker 2: Hello. Hello. He hung up hartly.
- 5:12Speaker 5: Yes, sir, you probably heard enough of that to know
- 5:14Speaker 5: what's going on here. Has something about a bomb and
- 5:16Speaker 5: the mail. Yes, I listen carefully. I'm only going to
- 5:19Speaker 5: tell you once get out of here on the double.
- 5:21Speaker 5: I want the assistant Superintendent of Males and the dispatcher
- 5:24Speaker 5: Stuart and Fox get him in here as quick as
- 5:26Speaker 5: you can. Got that, yes, sir, Oh, hell bank and
- 5:30Speaker 5: get it. This is Jordan. How many inspectors are in
- 5:37Speaker 5: to date?
- 5:37Speaker 6: You know, just a moment mister Jordan's mister Williams is in.
- 5:42Speaker 6: Mister Jack flipwords that he'll be out on Lincoln County
- 5:44Speaker 6: until tomorrow. Mister Thompson enter the hospital this morning to.
- 5:47Speaker 5: Have the appendix out one of three. I suppose they
- 5:50Speaker 5: should be thankful for that much, ring ed Williams for me.
- 5:54Speaker 5: Please tell them to get over to my office right away.
- 5:56Speaker 5: It's urgent. Yes, all the you sent for me? Yes, Foxy,
- 6:02Speaker 5: sit down. Something wrong, bloody bomb in the nail.
- 6:06Speaker 2: Not much about it.
- 6:07Speaker 5: I'll tell you later. Williams and Stewart or in the
- 6:09Speaker 5: list two man? Are we in for a busy day?
- 6:12Speaker 2: Oh? Harvey said, there was a hurry up call, and
- 6:14Speaker 2: is I kick excuse the loose call, forget it? Will
- 6:16Speaker 2: you practically close that door in my face? Yo? Warning
- 6:20Speaker 2: everybody sit down and listen.
- 6:23Speaker 1: No raises this year. I've been waiting for him to
- 6:26Speaker 1: spring it on it A button up, Joe. Here's what
- 6:28Speaker 1: we do have staring us in the face.
- 6:30Speaker 5: I just told Fox a minute ago there's a bomb
- 6:33Speaker 5: in the mail someplace.
- 6:34Speaker 2: A bomb.
- 6:35Speaker 5: That's right, that's right. A few minutes ago, I got
- 6:37Speaker 5: a phone call. I don't know who it was. All
- 6:40Speaker 5: I got with these facts. It's now nine to thirty.
- 6:44Speaker 5: Well between now and two thirty, we've got to find
- 6:46Speaker 5: a time bomb which was mailed to somebody here in town.
- 6:50Speaker 1: Somebody don't have any name at all. He didn't get
- 6:52Speaker 1: around to that. Either he wouldn't tell me or he
- 6:55Speaker 1: was cut off.
- 6:55Speaker 5: I'm hoping, just a slender hope, I know, but I'm
- 6:58Speaker 5: hoping he'll call back.
- 7:00Speaker 2: Can't count on it. How do we know this isn't
- 7:02Speaker 2: a leg bull?
- 7:03Speaker 5: We don't, but we can't afford to take chances of
- 7:05Speaker 5: somebody's life, would you no, Well, what kind of a package.
- 7:10Speaker 2: We don't know? Any kind? That's great. They spreads your
- 7:14Speaker 2: field out something terrific. Huh. Not only have your truck packages,
- 7:18Speaker 2: you have carryer packages.
- 7:19Speaker 1: Too, carry wouldn't have that bigger package?
- 7:22Speaker 2: Use your hand.
- 7:23Speaker 1: The powerful explosives we have nowadays in the small wiring
- 7:26Speaker 1: circuits possible?
- 7:27Speaker 2: Why not?
- 7:29Speaker 1: I'll give you another. How about a newspaper rule. That's
- 7:32Speaker 1: big enough, isn't it? Carriers handled them, don't they?
- 7:34Speaker 2: That's right. Here's what I think.
- 7:36Speaker 5: If that thing was mailed early this morning, it's either
- 7:39Speaker 5: out there in the parcel post bin or at one
- 7:41Speaker 5: of the substations. If it was mailed last night, it's
- 7:44Speaker 5: probably on one of the trucks right now, or else
- 7:46Speaker 5: it's been delivered, or else it's been delivered. Yes, a
- 7:49Speaker 5: lot of stuff's off the trucks by now. Well, that
- 7:51Speaker 5: complicates it. But let's do what we can as fast
- 7:53Speaker 5: as we can. Fox you round up all of the
- 7:56Speaker 5: special delivery cards, send them out after those trucks, and
- 7:59Speaker 5: get all packages back here.
- 8:01Speaker 2: We'll go over them after they get here.
- 8:03Speaker 5: Try to get the drivers to remember what's been delivered
- 8:05Speaker 5: and where. Just get the insured deliveries this won't be insured,
- 8:08Speaker 5: and get as much back as you can.
- 8:10Speaker 2: But if they can't remember everything, leave.
- 8:12Speaker 5: That to me. But do this too. Call the substations,
- 8:15Speaker 5: get all their stuff in here.
- 8:17Speaker 2: They'll do anything else. Not Now I'm on my way.
- 8:21Speaker 3: Do it.
- 8:22Speaker 2: Go through our own stuff in the back.
- 8:23Speaker 5: Let me see delivery from the New York Central's number
- 8:26Speaker 5: three hasn't come over from the station yet, hasn't, No,
- 8:29Speaker 5: And that makes it a little better. I get everything
- 8:31Speaker 5: we've got together in one place and keep it there.
- 8:34Speaker 5: I keep the out of town packages out of it.
- 8:36Speaker 5: Just add the stuff from the substations and the trucks
- 8:38Speaker 5: as it comes in.
- 8:39Speaker 2: And the pickup trucks.
- 8:40Speaker 1: Of course, some of the drop boxes up in the suburbs,
- 8:43Speaker 1: or for letters and parcels booth. We'd get some packages
- 8:46Speaker 1: coming in and they pick ups from those boxes. Yes,
- 8:48Speaker 1: I'd forgotten, man. Yeah, the trucks will be in here
- 8:51Speaker 1: by eleven. Well, might as well go ahead with everything
- 8:53Speaker 1: else until we get here.
- 8:54Speaker 5: Yeah, just so we get them as soon as they
- 8:56Speaker 5: come in. I'll leave that to you, yea. If we're
- 8:58Speaker 5: gonna do all this, I better get on it. You
- 9:00Speaker 5: know you're standing here any longer than this? No?
- 9:02Speaker 1: No, no, go on, go ahead. You want me to
- 9:05Speaker 1: check the packages?
- 9:05Speaker 2: Right?
- 9:06Speaker 5: I don't have to tell you your business. D I
- 9:09Speaker 5: know your record isn't inspected.
- 9:10Speaker 2: Oh, fiell in a little more for me. What you done? Okay?
- 9:13Speaker 2: Is that time bomb?
- 9:14Speaker 5: That's what he said? We have less than five hours now?
- 9:17Speaker 2: I got that? What else about it? Would it be
- 9:19Speaker 2: safe to open? No? No, it'll it'll go off if
- 9:21Speaker 2: you open it, he said.
- 9:22Speaker 5: So it's rougher and rougher. Well, I'm going to get helped,
- 9:25Speaker 5: doug all you want I use your phone? Help yourself?
- 9:28Speaker 2: Thanks?
- 9:32Speaker 1: Outside line please, State Police company A ro oh, rockey,
- 9:48Speaker 1: This is ed Williams Post Office? Is jesse in today?
- 9:50Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 9:51Speaker 2: No, no, don't call him no time. Tell him to
- 9:54Speaker 2: come on over here right away. Would you sure?
- 9:56Speaker 3: What do you want to do with explosives? Experts? You
- 9:58Speaker 3: got a bomb? Oh?
- 9:59Speaker 2: Maybe keep it under your hat or another thing? Rocket?
- 10:03Speaker 2: You got the fluoroscope? Just now touchy one?
- 10:07Speaker 3: No, we loaned become the e.
- 10:08Speaker 2: Up A four. I could use it, that's for sure.
- 10:11Speaker 4: It's only about one hundred miles.
- 10:12Speaker 3: I'll call them up and get them to fly it in.
- 10:14Speaker 3: We'll probably get it to you in an hour.
- 10:16Speaker 2: A little over good and you'll tell Jesse will now
- 10:21Speaker 2: the work. Doug, same here, boy.
- 10:23Speaker 1: How about those carriers about one hundred of Manta ninety four?
- 10:27Speaker 2: Can you do it? Can you hit them all?
- 10:29Speaker 1: I don't know. All I can do is try. I'll
- 10:33Speaker 1: bet you're thinking of the same thing. I am remembering
- 10:35Speaker 1: the same.
- 10:36Speaker 2: Case Bowling Green, Kentucky.
- 10:38Speaker 1: Yeah, that poor devil of a carry alive but.
- 10:40Speaker 2: Barely one reason.
- 10:42Speaker 5: I want to find this bomb before our luck runs out.
- 10:45Speaker 2: We're gonna see that it doesn't run out. I hope
- 10:47Speaker 2: you're right, ed, I sure hope you're right.

- 13:06Speaker 5: let the majority of the help know it, but often
- 13:08Speaker 5: one of our fairly isolated corners, a pile of packages
- 13:12Speaker 5: was growing. I looked at the clock ten twenty, just
- 13:17Speaker 5: about an hour gone, four hours left. Still, how are
- 13:25Speaker 5: things going?
- 13:26Speaker 2: Eh? Who knows? Well, let's could be expected anything like this?

- 13:34Speaker 5: the day isn't that hot. I think you are many
- 13:37Speaker 5: of them? Whyse yet? I don't think so yet. That'll
- 13:40Speaker 5: probably get out.
- 13:41Speaker 2: You know. Things have a way that they do. How
- 13:44Speaker 2: are you standing at yourself? I worried? I'm not very
- 13:49Speaker 2: happy happy? Well, none of us are.
- 13:51Speaker 5: Yeah, I keep thinking what if I get hold of
- 13:53Speaker 5: the thing. Have you ever been in an explosion? No,
- 13:56Speaker 5: you weren't in the service? No, ever see an explosion
- 13:59Speaker 5: and been close to one?
- 14:01Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 14:01Speaker 1: Well I came by once just after a gasoline tructangled
- 14:04Speaker 1: with a pole and took off.
- 14:07Speaker 2: It's pretty bad, you see, Joe. Would you like to
- 14:11Speaker 2: take the day over? Oh no, no, I wouldn't think
- 14:13Speaker 2: with them and that nobody'd blame you. Really, I wouldn't much.
- 14:16Speaker 1: I can't do that what if I did and the
- 14:18Speaker 1: thing got by and I could have prevented it. I'm nervous.
- 14:21Speaker 1: Maybe I don't like to set up. Maybe, but I'm
- 14:24Speaker 1: not chicken. I'm staying with it. I didn't suppose you
- 14:28Speaker 1: wouldn't stay with it, Joe. And they say every soldier
- 14:30Speaker 1: figures at the next bullet isn't going to get him.
- 14:34Speaker 2: That's the way I'm figuring myself. I'm miss good idea.
- 14:37Speaker 5: The only thing we have to worry about. Where is
- 14:41Speaker 5: this one named eleven? Thirty two hours gone? I went
- 14:54Speaker 5: back to the mailroom. Ill, doctor, how's it gone? We
- 14:58Speaker 5: have all this so far, a lot of works, and he.

- 15:05Speaker 2: can you tell? I can't tell, really, I Oh.
- 15:07Speaker 1: Sometimes there's something about the handwriting or the printing.
- 15:10Speaker 2: I get, you just feel it. Sometimes I don't know.
- 15:13Speaker 2: I don't get anything like that in this stuff. Well,
- 15:16Speaker 2: not even a fake return address.

- 15:37Speaker 3: I got to worry about getting.
- 15:38Speaker 2: Back these packages.
- 15:39Speaker 4: Everything's practically okay, only it is my second delivery. I
- 15:42Speaker 4: left one off at this place seventeen twenty four, Lime Street.
- 15:45Speaker 4: I got back here a while agoing nobody's home.
- 15:48Speaker 2: They were there when you left the package.
- 15:49Speaker 3: Yeah, fat ballheaded guy took it, as I remember.
- 15:52Speaker 2: We check the neighbors I already have, mister Jordan.
- 15:54Speaker 3: Nobody knows for sure where they went.
- 15:56Speaker 4: There's some talk about them leaving for Washington this morning,
- 15:58Speaker 4: but I can't pin it down. They drove anyway, cars gone,
- 16:01Speaker 4: garages empty.
- 16:03Speaker 5: Well that's using your head, molloy. At least we have
- 16:05Speaker 5: something to shoot at. Remember the name?
- 16:07Speaker 4: No, I don't, but that fat guy sure look like
- 16:09Speaker 4: A tabbed him for one the minute or later.
- 16:11Speaker 2: What's this?
- 16:13Speaker 3: Oh?
- 16:14Speaker 4: Miller came driving out, caught me and said, you're hunting
- 16:16Speaker 4: a package of stole them goods in the mail.
- 16:19Speaker 3: Maybe he shot his mouth too much. Uh, wasn't I
- 16:22Speaker 3: supposed to know?
- 16:22Speaker 2: Oh no, no, mylloy, it's it's all right.
- 16:24Speaker 1: I forgot that he knew what we were after you
- 16:26Speaker 1: say you got everything else?
- 16:28Speaker 3: Yeah, you're right in if you say it.
- 16:29Speaker 2: So you do that, Jack Foxy.
- 16:32Speaker 5: Yeah, look up seventeen twenty four Lime Street and get
- 16:35Speaker 5: the name. Anything else, get that name, and then get
- 16:37Speaker 5: on it to the state police to intercept them if possible.
- 16:40Speaker 5: Those people who received the package this morning, and they

- 17:07Speaker 5: eat at Bailey's.
- 17:08Speaker 2: Not today.
- 17:10Speaker 5: We had sandwiches and coffee brought in. The coffee was welcome,
- 17:13Speaker 5: but we didn't seem very hungry. Alone in my office
- 17:17Speaker 5: sipping coffee, all I could think about was the time
- 17:22Speaker 5: was half gone.
- 17:24Speaker 2: It made me forgetful. This is Jordan.
- 17:28Speaker 3: Haven't you forgotten something?

- 18:21Speaker 2: had already opened.
- 18:22Speaker 1: It, nothing much in it except some fancy sportress for
- 18:24Speaker 1: Morgan himself.
- 18:25Speaker 2: They're on their way again with the apologies.
- 18:28Speaker 1: Understand they were scared silly Morgan off of the shoulder cops.
- 18:30Speaker 1: The shirts even wanted to give them one, afraid they
- 18:33Speaker 1: were stolen goods.

- 18:50Speaker 1: This clerk caught at the wood Mount put a bunch
- 18:52Speaker 1: of packages in the bins just before he quit last night.
- 18:56Speaker 1: He remembered one for doctor Turner. This Turner seems collects
- 19:00Speaker 1: magazine first editions. Sometimes he's notn't worth insuring. Sometimes they are.
- 19:05Speaker 1: They're always worth something more than their original price.
- 19:09Speaker 2: This package looked like one at all. What about the carrier?
- 19:12Speaker 1: Spicer seems he blew in just as the place was
- 19:15Speaker 1: about to close, that he'd got a bag of his
- 19:17Speaker 1: with some new shoes he'd bought. He drifted through and
- 19:20Speaker 1: out again. Nobody paid any attention at their time.
- 19:23Speaker 2: And this morning Turner's package is gone? Is that it?
- 19:26Speaker 2: Where's Spicer is? Day off? Substitutes working? They're sure the
- 19:30Speaker 2: package is gone.
- 19:31Speaker 1: Turner called to ask her that come and they couldn't
- 19:34Speaker 1: trace it.

- 19:42Speaker 1: didn't come in last night either do I call the police.
- 19:46Speaker 2: I'd better do that, Foxy. Thanks.
- 19:48Speaker 1: Even if he has the thing, he surely opened it
- 19:51Speaker 1: by now, I think so myself.
- 19:52Speaker 2: But we can't be sure. We can't take chances.
- 19:55Speaker 5: I'd better call get me the police station.
- 20:15Speaker 2: Ed. Any luck with this pile of stuff? One that's uncertain.
- 20:18Speaker 2: Trying to make up my mind. Let's sew. Let's see here,
- 20:23Speaker 2: not very big.

- 21:01Speaker 2: Probably? Probably, Let's play it safe, That's what I thought
- 21:05Speaker 2: in here.
- 21:05Speaker 1: Ordinarily no, but we couldn't detect anything that would trigger
- 21:08Speaker 1: the thing.
- 21:09Speaker 5: So we'll put her in the water. Barke here, did
- 21:13Speaker 5: you put the wedding agent in the water.
- 21:15Speaker 1: Yeah, it'll soak through the wrapping. Quicker and through anything
- 21:18Speaker 1: else inside that much faster.
- 21:23Speaker 2: That doesn't. Inside takes a little longer.
- 21:29Speaker 5: Reminds me of the time I put in as an inspector.
- 21:32Speaker 1: I hear you're pretty good, Doug, just lucky getting the
- 21:38Speaker 1: walkers lucky.

- 22:31Speaker 5: about one hour ago, and still we hadn't found that bomb.
- 22:35Speaker 2: We hadn't found it, We hadn't found the missing carrier.
- 22:38Speaker 5: All we found was a new headache every few minutes.

- 22:45Speaker 3: This's Malloy again for the driver.
- 22:48Speaker 2: Oh yes, malloy, do you have something new?

- 23:15Speaker 7: This driver says you're the postmaster.
- 23:17Speaker 3: Isn't that right?
- 23:17Speaker 2: That's right? This is Douglas Jordan.
- 23:19Speaker 7: I don't understand all this about the package which came
- 23:22Speaker 7: from my husband versus man delivered it, and now he
- 23:25Speaker 7: wants it back.
- 23:25Speaker 5: He's perfectly right, Missus Bates. We'd very much like to
- 23:29Speaker 5: have that parcel.
- 23:30Speaker 7: I don't see why it has my husband's name on it.
- 23:33Speaker 2: It's the correct address.
- 23:34Speaker 7: I'm afraid that I can't give it back until my
- 23:36Speaker 7: husband has a chance to examine it.
- 23:38Speaker 2: What did our driver tell you, Missus Bates?
- 23:41Speaker 7: You had some story about stolen good But that does
- 23:44Speaker 7: make sense. Do you see anyone would know that my husband.
- 23:47Speaker 5: Would Someone may have confused him with another baits Have
- 23:50Speaker 5: you thought of that?
- 23:51Speaker 1: No?
- 23:52Speaker 7: I hadn't, but I am still sure that my husband
- 23:55Speaker 7: should pass judgment on this. It takes the responsibility and
- 23:59Speaker 7: I were wrong.
- 24:00Speaker 2: Let me take the responsibility. Missus Bates might not see
- 24:03Speaker 2: it that way.
- 24:04Speaker 7: He might say, I let myself be talked in.

- 24:07Speaker 5: Believe me, I'm sure your husband would be the first
- 24:10Speaker 5: to thank of if he knew, on my word of honor,
- 24:14Speaker 5: we must have that package.
- 24:16Speaker 7: Well, it's your responsibility, if you understand here, young man.
- 24:21Speaker 7: But I don't think my husband will thank you. He
- 24:24Speaker 7: doesn't like anyone connected with the government for that.
- 24:27Speaker 5: I'm sorry, Missus Bates, but thank you for giving us
- 24:30Speaker 5: that parcel. One hour, please let this one be it.
- 24:45Speaker 5: But it wasn't what we were after. A box of
- 24:48Speaker 5: advertising pencils.
- 24:50Speaker 2: That was all. Then It was a half an hour.
- 24:53Speaker 2: I forced myself.
- 24:54Speaker 5: To stay in my office waiting for a call that
- 24:56Speaker 5: they'd caught Spicer, or that someone somewhere had turned up
- 25:00Speaker 5: something ed any luck, not a bit.
- 25:05Speaker 2: We've combed everything, not a thing. I haven't caught up
- 25:07Speaker 2: with Spicy yet.
- 25:08Speaker 1: I think that's a false lead. Anyway, if he has
- 25:10Speaker 1: the thing, he's opened it by now.
- 25:13Speaker 5: That leaves us nowhere said, somebody's forgotten something.
- 25:17Speaker 1: That must be it maybe be all a hoax. You
- 25:20Speaker 1: know it's a matter. Don't you wanted to be a hoax?
