Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: The glow from the secondary teacher's pay deal has VTUS
- 0:02Speaker 1: pretty quickly because now the primary Principles back in the ring.
- 0:06Speaker 1: They've rejected the government's four point six pay rise, a
- 0:08Speaker 1: four point six percent pay rise, and they want what
- 0:11Speaker 1: the secondary principles got, and what they got was a
- 0:14Speaker 1: fifteen thousand dollars curriculum change, a balance. Karl Vasov, the
- 0:18Speaker 1: principal of robin Dale Primary School A Carlvaso, joins me,
- 0:22Speaker 1: right now.
- 0:22Speaker 2: Get the Carl good and how are you today?
- 0:25Speaker 1: Good? Now, there's going to be some people out there
- 0:27Speaker 1: who get no pay rises at all and think, wow,
- 0:29Speaker 1: four point six was pretty good, So what was wrong
- 0:30Speaker 1: with it?
- 0:32Speaker 2: Yeah? I think what it is saying through is that
- 0:34Speaker 2: we've been fighting for a long time to get recognition
- 0:37Speaker 2: so that we can attract, retain and support principles to
- 0:40Speaker 2: do the best job they can for their communities. And
- 0:44Speaker 2: quite frankly, we've just had enough of just being told
- 0:48Speaker 2: or here this will do, merry Christmas, go away, and
- 0:51Speaker 2: so the principles have drawn the line in the sand
- 0:53Speaker 2: the NCDO Principles that I belong to and just said
- 0:56Speaker 2: that's just not enough to acknowledge the work that we
- 1:00Speaker 2: we do every day.
- 1:02Speaker 1: Okay, so have you got a percent? I bet you won't,
- 1:05Speaker 1: But what sort of percentage would make you happy?
- 1:08Speaker 2: What we want is we just want acknowledgement that at
- 1:10Speaker 2: the moment we're going through some huge changes and trying
- 1:13Speaker 2: to implement these changes in our communities at a pace
- 1:17Speaker 2: that keeps up.
- 1:18Speaker 1: So, oh dear, have we dropped off? Carl Vaso? Are
- 1:22Speaker 1: you still with me or not?
- 1:24Speaker 2: I know our community is best and when you're changing
- 1:26Speaker 2: the curriculums at such a huge rate at a fast pace,
- 1:30Speaker 2: we've got to balance a whole lot of things in
- 1:32Speaker 2: our schools to ensure that it's it's effective, that it
- 1:35Speaker 2: relates to our kids.
- 1:37Speaker 1: Can I get this?
- 1:38Speaker 2: It go at whatever rate the government has in their
- 1:41Speaker 2: heads about what we're worth inside our communities, we're worth
- 1:44Speaker 2: a lot, not just monetary, but you know, support wise
- 1:49Speaker 2: all right, you know, community.
- 1:51Speaker 1: So what we're what we're talking about here not necessarily
- 1:55Speaker 1: is a four point six percent pay rise, but you want,
- 1:57Speaker 1: and your your union says as a crushing load to
- 2:00Speaker 1: change the curriculum and the secondary school Principle has got
- 2:03Speaker 1: a fifteen thousand dollars curriculum change allowance. So if you
- 2:06Speaker 1: just got that, would you walk away happy?
- 2:09Speaker 2: What I would go away from seeing if that was
- 2:12Speaker 2: on the table is that they've acknowledged the work that
- 2:14Speaker 2: we do as a principle in my community. You know,
- 2:18Speaker 2: I'm focused. I've got a low socio economic community, lots
- 2:21Speaker 2: of community people that struggle to make ends meet. So
- 2:25Speaker 2: for me to continually ask for more and more and more,
- 2:28Speaker 2: it's not a really good reflection sometimes. But what I
- 2:31Speaker 2: am focused on is that whoever comes after me is
- 2:35Speaker 2: equipped with and acknowledged with the right skills and you know,
- 2:39Speaker 2: re enumerated in a way that you know, acknowledges the
- 2:42Speaker 2: work that they do. So fifteen thousand dollars that the
- 2:45Speaker 2: secondary principles got, would you not think that that is
- 2:48Speaker 2: fear that the primary principles get it?
- 2:51Speaker 1: Well, look it's got a name, and it's a curriculum
- 2:53Speaker 1: change allow and so what would that fifteen thousand dollars
- 2:56Speaker 1: be used for? And would it help you change the
- 2:58Speaker 1: curriculum or not? I mean, I think we're talking at
- 3:01Speaker 1: cross purposes here. You're wanting to be valued, Carl, I
- 3:03Speaker 1: value you. Well, I'm just talking about I'm just talking
- 3:06Speaker 1: about the money that will stop you complaining.
- 3:09Speaker 2: Well, I don't think we're complaining, Andrew. I think what
- 3:11Speaker 2: it is is that it's an amount of money that
- 3:14Speaker 2: acknowledges that the change that principles are leading in their schools.
- 3:18Speaker 2: And so we've got a new curriculum just like the
- 3:21Speaker 2: secondary principles. They're implementing change to NCA. We're implementing change
- 3:27Speaker 2: to English, structured literacy programs in our school, structured numeracy
- 3:31Speaker 2: programs in our schools, trying to change the way in
- 3:34Speaker 2: which we teach these things. And we're leading schools, you know,
- 3:37Speaker 2: the same size as secondary schools. Secondaries are bigger, no doubt,
- 3:41Speaker 2: but they've got a larger staffing allowance that we don't
- 3:44Speaker 2: get sometimes when you look at the staffing and the
- 3:46Speaker 2: way schools are stuff, you're funded on the size of
- 3:49Speaker 2: the shoe size of your kids.
- 3:51Speaker 1: All right, Carl, thank you so much for your time.
- 3:53Speaker 1: Canvasso is the principle of Rowandale Primary School. For more
