- 1:13Doing good today. How you doing today Workman?
- 1:16I'm doing pretty good. I'm doing pretty good.
- 1:18I got to tell you, I have a lot going on with my family and
- 1:21friends. They're going to be here this
- 1:22weekend. We're doing a reunion, so that's
- 1:25always nice to do, right? Oh yeah.
- 1:28And having that reunion is interesting because last night
- 1:31we started with our with our family and we were talking and
- 1:35you know, I try to get you there and you had you other things to
- 1:38do and you weren't able to make it.
- 1:39But I will tell you what, we had a good time last night.
- 1:43We had a real good time last night.
- 1:45So I think it went well. So before we get started, before
- 1:50we get all into our thing right, I want to remind you that Conor
- 1:54and I are not experts of what we're talking about today's in a
- 1:58class is investing one O 1 build your retirement.
- 2:00We're not investment planners, we're not Cpas, we're none of
- 2:04that. We're just talking about from
- 2:05our own experience and our own knowledge that we looked up, we
- 2:14researched and everything. So take that with a grain of
- 2:17salt, OK? But if you know anything about
- 2:18the show, Connor and I, we tend to get sidetracked, and I'm
- 2:22pretty sure we're going to get sidetracked today.
- 2:24What do you think, Connor? Maybe, maybe, maybe, maybe.
- 2:27It depends. We'll see how it goes, you know?
- 2:31But anything going in the world right now that you want to chat
- 2:33about? Not that I know of.
- 2:36Not that you know of. Nothing's going on.
- 2:41No. What are you guys playing this
- 2:42weekend? The Rams.
- 2:47I meant the Miners, but OK. Yeah, the Rams.
- 2:49The Rams. Bill's gonna be a good game.
- 2:51Nevada's Nevada. Nevada.
- 2:53The Wolfpack, Yeah, they're two in one right now also.
- 2:57That UNLV, No. Oh, OK, OK, OK.
- 3:00Then you might have a chance. And the Bills against the Rams,
- 3:05that's I think that's gonna be a really good game.
- 3:07Is that the early or late game? I think it's Monday night.
- 3:14Really. I think.
- 3:17Because for that, one mirror can head over to Dave and Buster's.
- 3:23The 10 for 10 wings would be perfect.
- 3:25I haven't had wings in a while. Yeah. 6:15.
- 3:28Monday they. Gave me the 6:15, yeah.
- 3:30All right, so that's what we're going to do Monday night.
- 3:32If you're in the El Paso area, check us out at Dave and
- 3:34Buster's. We're going to be their Monday
- 3:39night from Monday Night Football to watch the Bills and the Rams
- 3:43and Dave and Buster's sponsor. Us.
- 3:44OK, Headed what? Shut up the night?
- 3:48No, why not? Why would they?
- 3:51Dude, do you know everything that I'm doing?
- 3:55Like everything that I'm getting set up.
- 3:58You know, I've talked about the trivia bingo.
- 4:00We do that Wednesday nights with military broadcast radio, right
- 4:037 to 9. We do trivia.
- 4:04It's free to play, no prizes. We're just, you know, out here
- 4:07having fun playing trivia for those who like trivia.
- 4:10And we also, I'm doing my MC events at weddings, which I
- 4:14think are pretty cool. I'm doing that more often.
- 4:18I have Christmas coming up and we get partnership with the VFW
- 4:21that we're trying to get into. So it's not unfeasible to say we
- 4:24can get sponsored by somebody. Right.
- 4:28Me, yeah, but I don't know. What don't you know?
- 4:31Dave and Buster's, I don't think they would sponsor it.
- 4:35You don't think they would sponsor it?
- 4:36Why not? I don't know, I just don't think
- 4:38so. You don't see the possibility,
- 4:40huh? You could ask.
- 4:45You'd ask. Well, you, well, you could ask
- 4:47when you're looking for sponsors, right?
- 4:49But you wanted them to come to you.
- 4:52So that's what I'm hoping will happen with us.
- 4:55Hopefully. We'll see.
- 4:57We will see. And hopefully soon you'll be
- 5:00earning a paycheck if we get sponsorships.
- 5:04So yeah, maybe. Would you like that?
- 5:07Yeah. Yeah.
- 5:09I got an idea that I'm working on.
- 5:11So we'll see how that goes. Anyway, I think it's time we get
- 5:14the show started. What do you think?
- 5:15Finally, one of the next fuse. Yes, Sir.
- 5:17Let's do it. Working perfectly.
- 5:26Today we are talking about an intro to investing, using your
- 5:30money to build for retirement. This episode breaks down the
- 5:33basics so you can start early, stay consistent and let compound
- 5:38interest do the heavy lifting. The fuse is lit.
- 5:41Murfman, take the mic. All right, Connor, today we're
- 5:47talking about interesting to investing and compounded
- 5:50interest. All right.
- 5:53What have I talked about? Compounded interest?
- 5:54Do you know the formula? No, I think it's annual equals
- 6:06like principal one plus the rate over oh God, number of years.
- 6:17No, no, no, no, no, no. It's something like that, right?
- 6:22Like NON and NT and. Something with like numbers and
- 6:25then the time. Maybe I should have looked at
- 6:27that before I asked you the question, huh?
- 6:29Yeah. You know, say hey, what?
- 6:32What is compound interest? I just know it's a equals like
- 6:39principal rate with the power of.
- 6:41Well, that is the principle. That's what we're talking about
- 6:44right there. The rate, if you want to
- 6:45calculate yourself, there it is. But we are actually here having
- 6:49fun doing our show and I am looking forward to talking about
- 6:54this. So let's get the burning
- 6:56question started, Connor. To get things started, let's
- 7:07jump right into the question on everyone's mind, the burning
- 7:11question. Today's burning question is what
- 7:14is compound interest? A The interest you earn on your
- 7:17initial investment. B the interest you pay on your
- 7:20credit card. C the interest you earn on your
- 7:23initial investment and the accumulated interest.
- 7:26D the interest you earn on your savings account.
- 7:29Murph, man, let's get interest started.
- 7:33All right. So out of those questions,
- 7:35Connor, what do you think is your, your the answer for today?
- 7:44Is it ABC or D? The interest you earn on the
- 7:47initial investment or the interest you pay on your credit
- 7:49card? The earn on initial initial
- 7:51investment and the cumulative interest or the interest you
- 7:54earn on savings account. I think, I think see the
- 7:59interest you earn on your initial investment and the
- 8:02cumulative rate. That's correct.
- 8:05Yeah, that is correct. So, you know, it's one of those
- 8:08things that compounded interest is where you make your money.
- 8:12OK, I tell you last, you know, like right now we have a little
- 8:16savings, right? And that savings earned US $0.23
- 8:21last month. Oh wow, all.
- 8:24Right. It's a couple of like 3 1/2
- 8:26thousand, you know, one of my one of my emergency funds and we
- 8:33earned $0.23 last month. We're not touching that money.
- 8:37What do you think is going to earn this month?
- 8:40Maybe like 2524 or still 23, We'll see, right?
- 8:45But then after a couple months, $0.23 a month, then just do 25
- 8:49to make it even. How much is that a year?
- 8:54I don't know. Let me see $0.25 a year. $0.25 a
- 9:00month for the year let's have. 3. 4. 4.
- 9:10No, you're right. Three.
- 9:11My bad. Four every four months is a
- 9:13dollar. So three.
- 9:14Yeah. So we'll earn $3 at the end of
- 9:18the year and earn 36. Now if we keep that in there for
- 9:2010 years, what do you think we'll be earning probably about?
- 9:24$0.50. $0.50 a month, almost double maybe.
- 9:29You know, we don't. I mean, that's where you can
- 9:31actually sit here and calculate the formula and everything.
- 9:33You know, there's actually, we'll actually show that later.
- 9:35We're going to get on the Internet and I'm going to show
- 9:37you a compounded interest formula so you can see how much
- 9:41you put in, how much you get out and what you know.
- 9:42And we'll we'll show them that. OK, But I say let's get to
- 9:48today's hot take. All righty.
- 9:54Hold on. Today's hot take is this.
- 10:01The most dangerous financial advice for young people is
- 10:04trying to beat the market. The time and emotional energy
- 10:07spent researching individual stocks is a distraction from
- 10:11your single highest return activity.
- 10:14Consistent, boring contributions to low cost, diversified index
- 10:18funds morph man. It's your turn to fan the
- 10:21flames. All right, so today's hot take,
- 10:27the most dangerous financial advice for young people is to
- 10:30try to beat the market. How many of your friends that
- 10:32you know invest in the market or they're in forex or they're in
- 10:35crypto 111 OK, I have I have a couple friends that do that.
- 10:42One of them specifically in crypto and this past summer he
- 10:46hit like 70,000 on one of his cryptos.
- 10:50He invested like 2000 went up to 70,000 and he got out right
- 10:56Researching the Internet. You, you can, you can make money
- 10:58that way, but everyone thinks it's just you go in, put money
- 11:01in money comes out like an ATM. It's not that easy.
- 11:04Trust me on that one. You know, I had a a crypto that
- 11:08I put in probably about 40, maybe $50 and I got it up to 250
- 11:13and I got out, you know, five time return right?
- 11:17Not bad. Yeah, not not bad at all.
- 11:18It's just one of those things where I did not want to let it,
- 11:22right. You know, they got up there and
- 11:24I took it out of my friends. Like you should have waited
- 11:26longer. You would have made, I don't
- 11:27care. I made money already.
- 11:29That's, you know, that's the whole goal of this, right?
- 11:31But yeah, to research and do it all constantly is not something
- 11:34I want to do. And then the time energy,
- 11:41researching everything is a distraction from a single
- 11:44highest return activity, consistent boring contributions
- 11:47to a low cost diversified index fund.
- 11:50Remember we talked about this what last week or two weeks ago,
- 11:52The 5020, fifty, 3020 rule. Yeah.
- 11:56OK. That 20% that you put into
- 11:58savings, we talked about what, what should it be, right?
- 12:03You want that to go to a savings account for emergencies.
- 12:06How many months do you want to have in there?
- 12:0866 minimum 6 if you can have more, great.
- 12:12How much you want to have in there for a repair on the House
- 12:14or car? Three months.
- 12:18Three months, OK, depending what your income is, right?
- 12:21But give me the dollar amount. What should you have for repair
- 12:24at the house or repair in your car?
- 12:2750,000. I wish we had 50,000 / 10, about
- 12:3355. OK.
- 12:36And then college funds and all these other little things you
- 12:38want to save, we can have a different account for each one
- 12:39of those. OK.
- 12:41So the way you look at that 20%, you have, let's just say we have
- 12:45$1000 and you have $200 to invest in savings, right?
- 12:51That $100. You can also break down to 5030,
- 12:552020, I'm sorry, 50 goes into the savings accounts.
- 12:57You need to save 30 of that. So like 50 of the 200 would be
- 13:01$100 goes into your savings, 30%, which is $30 goes into
- 13:08your, I'm sorry, $60.00 goes into your index funds, your low
- 13:12boring stocks and bonds. We talked about buying the ones
- 13:15that are part of your, your life.
- 13:19Like, for example, if I were to buy stock right now, I would buy
- 13:23stock in our mixer here because this was a good brand.
- 13:28It got bought up by Rd. which is a better brand.
- 13:30You know, I know they're not going anywhere, right?
- 13:36So I've invest money in what I used.
- 13:38Apple. We use Apple, right?
- 13:40Cell phone, Samsung computers, Asus, you know, those are the
- 13:46things you want to invest in because you know they're going
- 13:49to be around because you use them.
- 13:51If you've done your research right and bought the right
- 13:52equipment, obviously we just go for the cheapest equipment.
- 13:55You're not going to do that. Yeah, but those 30% go into
- 14:02those boring index funds and then you have 20 percent, $40
- 14:06that you can put into anything you want to try, such as your
- 14:10high risk stuff, the crypto, forex, whatever.
- 14:15And if you lose it, you lose it. But that also has the highest
- 14:17return, OK, Because the chances of that going up high are good.
- 14:25When when I left my last company, I had $2000 in my 4 O
- 14:311K and I put it into the highest yield I could 50% into highest
- 14:39and the other 50 into just the boring index one right.
- 14:47The return was like 250% on the high risk stuff and it was about
- 14:5110% on my boring funds. You know, big difference, big
- 14:57return right. Then I took it out when I needed
- 15:00a car repair and stuff, you know, which I again, it was your
- 15:04mom's health. We talked about this, right?
- 15:06The money went, everything went to that.
- 15:08But I'm getting back to that point where we can save and we
- 15:13can do more, right? Last night we were, I was
- 15:15talking to my family and friends and we were discussing what
- 15:20everyone's doing for their career.
- 15:21And they said, what are you doing as I'm teaching, you know,
- 15:25and everyone has like director of this, I own a couple farms,
- 15:28whatever, right? Well, I'm a teacher.
- 15:32And they're like, oh, that, that.
- 15:33That's nice. And then one guy goes, what
- 15:34about your podcast? Oh, that's my business.
- 15:37That's a different thing. You ask me what I do for a
- 15:38living. Oh, you have no business.
- 15:40I it's just barely getting started.
- 15:42Well, what do you do? Boom, boom, boom, boom, boom.
- 15:44Here's my animations. Here's my trivia, here's my
- 15:45bingo. I also host like, you know, and
- 15:47they're like, yeah, they're like, oh, so you're doing pretty
- 15:51good. I said not yet, not yet, but I
- 15:55will be, you know, and I even I got the contracts I'm making, I
- 16:07put them into rocket Lawyer, which is like a, an online legal
- 16:11program that they'll research your documents for you.
- 16:14It made minimal changes to what I had minimal.
- 16:18Wow. That put so much work into those
- 16:20contracts and I asked AI like, what are the problems that could
- 16:24happen with this contract, these, these and these, OK, how
- 16:26can we fix it? This, this and this All right
- 16:28now tell me what are the problems, you know?
- 16:30And then I have different documents for different events
- 16:32and different branches of my business and I have them all in
- 16:37English and Spanish. But guess what?
- 16:39What if the Spanish isn't translated correctly, I have a
- 16:44clause that says the English contract is the one that will be
- 16:48held. The Spanish is just for
- 16:49reference to give you a real good idea what we do, but the
- 16:54English 1 is the one that we're signing.
- 16:57Why did I say that? Well, what would I invest my
- 17:00money right now if I if I had the money to do it?
- 17:03Google everyone. Imagine getting on Google when
- 17:06it first started. You know when everyone's like,
- 17:09what the Hell's Google Now? You pay several $1000 to get
- 17:14stuck in it. Apple, same thing right?
- 17:17So if you find the startup company like ours.
- 17:21Exactly like ours. Exactly like ours as we're
- 17:24getting off the ground, you invest in us, there's an
- 17:26investment in Angel, right? They invest in US and they get a
- 17:29percentage back or whatever we make every year.
- 17:32You know, if they buy in for 50% of what I've spent so far, they
- 17:36become 50% partners. So if you find the right
- 17:41investment, you can do a lot, dude.
- 17:44You can really do a lot. But right now we're just doing
- 17:49the real basic saving and we're getting back on our feet.
- 17:52And then I got to recoup all the money I've spent in the last
- 17:54couple years for this business. And then and only then I started
- 17:58doing stuff. Wow.
- 18:01You know, because like I said, AI is a big part of my life so.
- 18:06Oh yeah. You know, but I'll tell you
- 18:08what, let's go ahead and go to break.
- 18:10And when we come back from break, we're going to talk about
- 18:14those definitions that you need to learn to cover the investing.
- 18:19Yeah. So we'll be right back.
- 18:22It's time for a break. Hot takes with the Murph man.
- 18:25We'll be right back. The station where our veterans
- 18:33voices are heard. MBR talk.
- 18:37It's on the web MB radio dot. According to the VA Suicide Data
- 18:44report, an average of 22 veterans die by suicide every
- 18:48single day. This figure is a sobering
- 18:50reality and a crisis that demands our immediate attention
- 18:54and compassion. We must recognize and address
- 18:57the fact that every 24 hours, 22 veterans are losing their lives
- 19:01to suicide. The war doesn't always end when
- 19:04our veterans come home. The invisible wounds they carry,
- 19:08wounds that are real and heavy, require continuous support.
- 19:11No veteran should have to carry this burden alone.
- 19:15Many veterans experience stress and disconnection as they

- 19:57No veteran should face their struggles alone.
- 20:00Together, we can ensure every veteran finds the support and
- 20:03hope they deserve. He kids help, but he still feels
- 20:10off season that on the TV about a dog batting sick.
- 20:16This is a man's best friend. Whoa.
- 20:22So he goes one day and he picks it up.
- 20:25Never thought a dog could bring so much love and put a smile on
- 20:31his face. stand to see a soldier go to God
- 20:58by their own hands. We will do everything we can.
- 21:04And to make 22 zero again. Before we get back to the show,
- 21:29we pause for something that matters to me deeply.
- 21:32I was inspired by Ryan Spencer's song Make 22 Zero.
- 21:36Again, I'd like to remind you that help is always available
- 21:4024/7 365. If you ever feel you need

- 22:04It's not just for veterans. This is for anyone who feels
- 22:08they need some help. You do not have to be a veteran.
- 22:11Anyone can get the help. That's what matters here.
- 22:13OK, now on the break. We got a strike on our
- 22:20commercial, which makes no sense.
- 22:24I don't think it was the commercial.
- 22:25I think it was like before. Well, yeah, my intro and I I
- 22:33actually told TikTok like, I create all these videos, I have
- 22:36the right to play these videos. I have permission to play the
- 22:38music. Where is the problem?
- 22:41Yeah, I get a little bothered by that, man.
- 22:44I don't know. I know you don't know.
- 22:48All right, we talked about compounded interest.
- 22:54Now there's other terms we need to learn today.
- 22:56So let's go ahead and get the definitions are laying down the
- 22:59coals. Before we dig in, let's clarify
- 23:11some of the key terms we'll be using today while laying down
- 23:13the coals, stocks, ownership stakes and individual companies.
- 23:18Bonds, loans provided to companies or government
- 23:22entities. Funds.
- 23:24Bundles of various investments offering portfolio
- 23:27diversification accounts, retirement options like tax
- 23:31advantage, 4 O 1K plans and individual retirement
- 23:34arrangements. Back to you, Murph Mann, to take
- 23:37us through these definitions. All right, let's look at these
- 23:40definitions we have. Sorry, stocks ownership stakes
- 23:55in an individual companies. That's that's what stocks are
- 23:57you own part of the company, OK. And then we have bonds, loans
- 24:04provided to companies or government entities and then
- 24:07funds bundles of various investments offering portfolio
- 24:13debt specification. And then accounts we have
- 24:18retirement options like tax advantage for OK 1414 O1 KS and
- 24:23individual retirement arrangements IR as that's what
- 24:26an IRA is so. That's what it means.
- 24:28That's what it means individual retirement arrangement.
- 24:33So I think that's, that's interesting stuff to think
- 24:35about, right. So let's, let's let's take one
- 24:37of those at a time. I'd like to know what do you
- 24:40think stocks means? I mean, I know you know that.
- 24:48Give me a, what you mean by stock.
- 24:50Give me an idea what you think that is.
- 24:54Like a price of a company. Right.
- 24:58To buy a portion of the company right, you have to buy a stock
- 25:01in it. Yeah.
- 25:03And as you're there, you own part of the company and there's
- 25:11different things to do with investing.
- 25:14You can get investments that pay you quarterly, right?
- 25:19Or you can have investments that just grow in value.
- 25:23Those those payments you get, you can go back and you can
- 25:29reinvest them into the stock. Now sometimes they do a stock
- 25:33split. What's that?
- 25:37It's well, the stock actually splits in half.
- 25:40So what was worth 200 is now worth 100 each.
- 25:45And I don't know why they do that.
- 25:46I mean, we can I, this is something I can look up, you
- 25:49know, like maybe I should while we're talking about it.
- 25:50But it splits and you go from 200 a share to $100 a share, but
- 25:55you get 2 now. So you still have your 200
- 25:56investment in the company, but as it grows back to 200, you now
- 26:04have double growing. OK.
- 26:10And sometimes you have things that give you dividends.
- 26:13So like for example, if you look up a dividend and it says you
- 26:18get 1% of your stock in right every quarter, every year,
- 26:25whatever the number is, you can say, OK, how much does this
- 26:30stock give me in dividends? And you say 10%, whatever the
- 26:33number is. And you say, OK, that how often
- 26:36is it OK, Then you say that's how much it is a year.
- 26:39And then let's just say I get like using even numbers, right,
- 26:43$100 a year. Oh, let's, let's do $10 a year.
- 26:46OK. How many stocks do I have to buy
- 26:50to get $100,000 a year from it? So basically you buy stocks, buy
- 26:55stocks, buy stocks and then your interest is your income and you
- 27:02sell. When stocks become that, you can
- 27:03sell for that amount and you take out your share of the
- 27:07company. So in a way you you have that
- 27:11now. What's also cool is AMC does it
- 27:13where if you're a stockholder, you get special perks with them.
- 27:16Oh, really? Yeah.
- 27:17So you buy one stock and you get special perks with them now.
- 27:21Unless you have to get like a requirement and like a minimum.
- 27:27No, no. Are you a stockholder?
- 27:29That's all it asks. Are you a stockholder?
- 27:31And the answer is yes. And guess what?
- 27:33You get the money. Well, not money, but whatever.
- 27:36Well, the. The perks.
- 27:38I'm like free money. I'll, I'll take it.
- 27:41Now, let me tell you, there's there's a lot of reasons people
- 27:44invest in stocks and bonds, but there's one that there's an
- 27:48influencer, Annie Yeager, the blonde girl football teams like
- 27:51the one I love so much, you know, just her take on
- 27:54everything, right, is one of them.
- 27:56There's a few that I watch, but her in particular, she's a Green
- 28:00Bay fan. Now, do you know anything about
- 28:03Green Bay at all? No.
- 28:05Who owns a team? Do you know?
- 28:08The city of Green Bay? Not the city government, The
- 28:13people in Green Bay. The only way you can buy a stock
- 28:17in Green Bay is to live there. Live there.
- 28:22Wow, you know. You might be able to buy it
- 28:25online or something, right, and be a part of the team, but it's
- 28:27owned by people. Not by a city, not by a
- 28:31millionaire. It's run by the people.
- 28:34Wow. So Green Bay fans are little
- 28:37different in that, right? So you can invest in anything
- 28:44you want. You know, a high school friend
- 28:47of mine is actually in the investment group that owns the
- 28:50Texans. So like we go to reunion.
- 28:53He's like, hey, you want to come to the game anytime we can put
- 28:55you in the suites. And I'm like, Nah, it's all
- 28:59right. Not that I don't want to see the
- 29:01Texans, but I just, I don't know.
- 29:05I don't know if that'd be a good watch.
- 29:09You know, from the from the suite.
- 29:10We talked about this, right? Yeah.
- 29:12How far away do you want to be in?
- 29:14Now, let me ask you guys a question.
- 29:15If you think about this, OK, when you're sitting there in at
- 29:21the football games and you have a seat, what do you think is a
- 29:29better seat? Is it the ones that are like
- 29:32close to the field so you can see the players or further back
- 29:38up in the nosebleeds or somewhere in the middle?
- 29:46Somewhere below middle but still a little like good high up.
- 29:51Is that what I would say? So I would say between 30 and
- 29:5740th row when would be close enough to see your players but
- 30:00far enough away to see the game. Now at the same time, if we were
- 30:04to buy tickets at the goal line, front and row, would that be a
- 30:12better seat if that's what you want to see as touchdowns?
- 30:15Well, that's if they go on this side.
- 30:18Right. There's no, yeah, there's no.
- 30:19You go. To the other side of the field.
- 30:23There, there was one game I think Alabama, LSU played and I
- 30:26don't know if it was with the championship or playoff.
- 30:28I don't, I really don't remember which game.
- 30:30But LSU never crossed the 50. So if you were an LSU fan, you
- 30:38only got to see them when they were on your side of the field.
- 30:44Isn't that sad? You know, of course.
- 30:47So it's for two quarters, they were on your side of the field.
- 30:50And then? And the other quarter, they were
- 30:52on the other side and they never came toward you.
- 30:53Wow. So yeah.
- 30:58Anyway, you when you're investing in stuff like this,
- 31:00right, you get certain perks. And like, for example, my friend
- 31:05invested the Texans. You know, he's part owner.
- 31:10He can do things, you know, and that's that's pretty cool stuff.
- 31:14The next thing we talk about is bonds.
- 31:16Now, this one, I'm not going to sit here and tell you I know
- 31:18anything about bonds, but have you ever heard of Treasury
- 31:21bonds? No.
- 31:22OK. Bonds are investments you buy
- 31:26that you cannot cash in for 25 years.
- 31:31Watch 25. That's how they work.
- 31:33So you buy a a bond, Treasury bond for the United States
- 31:38government. You're not buying into the
- 31:39government, but you're saying I want to help the government and
- 31:42I'm going to give $100 to a Treasury bond.
- 31:46OK. And in 25 years, you get 200
- 31:49back. And the thing about that is when
- 31:54you talk about guaranteed income, the government's always
- 31:57going to pay you, right? So if I were to invest 10,000
- 32:00right now, in 20 years I'd have 20,000.
- 32:04You see how that works? So it double s.
- 32:06It double s, but is that a good investment?
- 32:09Because and then this is where you go into calculating
- 32:12compounded interest. What if I put the $10,000 into a
- 32:14bank account that earns 10% interest a year?
- 32:18So that 10,000 becomes 11, becomes 1150, That's 1250, and
- 32:24within 10 years you're already at 20,000.
- 32:29Maybe could you do that for your kid also?
- 32:33Wow, thank you for mentioning that again.
- 32:35Well, I want to say none of this is scripted.
- 32:39None of this is just whatever comes up in our conversation.
- 32:41I know you don't like to watch the news or pay attention to it,
- 32:45but there's a a thing that Trump is doing right now.
- 32:51What's that? He gave 60 million children
- 32:55under the age of 18 a fund of $1000.
- 33:00And the students are the only ones that can take that out.
- 33:04Parents can't. But the only way you can get it
- 33:07is if you register for it. So the money's there.
- 33:10But you just have to say, OK, here I'm cleaning my $1000 and
- 33:15it stays investment until they turn 18.
- 33:18Wow. OK.
- 33:19Then there's the Texas teacher, I mean, Texas tomorrow fund.
- 33:23This is one that I wanted to do for you, but I just, I really
- 33:26couldn't afford to do what I wanted to do.
- 33:29But you say, what is the college cost right now, $100,000?
- 33:37OK, I'm going to invest $100,000 into a fund right now when
- 33:43you're a baby, OK, by the time you turn 18, it's paid off that
- 33:49100,000. OK.
- 33:51OK, obviously I mean, you know, probably closer to like 10, but
- 33:57if that gets you an A college degree when you turn 18,
- 34:04whatever the cost of that college degree is at 18 is what
- 34:07gets paid by the Texas Tomorrow Fund at a state funded
- 34:09institution. So if you want to go to UTEP,
- 34:15it's 11,000 to 1511 to 20,000 and depending on food and room
- 34:20and board and all that, right? So 20,000 a year times 4 is
- 34:2280,000 right now. Yeah.
- 34:25That's semester for me when I started was like 600 OK now it's
- 34:3311,000 now granted it's been 40 years.
- 34:41Yeah. But that's what I'm talking
- 34:43about. You buy the Texas smartphone now
- 34:45and then 18 years when you're ready to go to college, that
- 34:49money is for your college education.
- 34:52Now what's interesting about it is it's for a Texas State funded
- 34:55institution, just like the Hazelwood Act is, right?
- 35:00Yeah. And what ends up happening, the
- 35:05Texas pays a Texas State institution, but they don't pay
- 35:09private foundations. So if you go to private school,
- 35:12sometimes it takes us tomorrow if it won't pay because they're
- 35:14a private school. So because they want to keep the
- 35:19money within Texas, right? If it goes to another company,
- 35:22it's gone. If you go to school outside of
- 35:24Texas, they don't pay. So that money is, I don't know
- 35:29how they give it back to you, you know, so when you're, when
- 35:35you're looking at that, you can start early and you can get it
- 35:39and you can go with your kid and, and make money.
- 35:41You can invest in the bank account, you can do CDs, you can
- 35:44reinvest in that CDs, our certificates of deposit where
- 35:46you put in money into an account and you can't touch it for a
- 35:49certain amount of time, usually 6 to 12 months.
- 35:51And then when it comes out, you have a certain percentage and
- 35:53it's higher than a savings account and it's, it's supposed
- 35:58to be guaranteed. So whatever you put in, you're
- 36:00going to get back from either the bank or the government if
- 36:02they fall. You know, funds are bundles of
- 36:08various investments. So like you have index funds or
- 36:13you have portfolios. And so you invest money.
- 36:16And if you go to like Mutual America, that's the one I used
- 36:19to have you pull up. They have all these different
- 36:21funds, right? And then they say, OK, this bank
- 36:28or this fund, I should say, gives you the last three months
- 36:33projection, one year, five year and 10 year.
- 36:39So if you look at it and it starts off with a a 3% interest
- 36:43for three months, you're like, oh, that's pretty good.
- 36:44And then you go to the 10 year and it has 1% interest.
- 36:47You're like, oh, that's that's that is not really doing well
- 36:50over time. Is it doing better now?
- 36:52Yeah, but if I would have any money in 10 years ago, it
- 36:55wouldn't be earning me much money.
- 36:58So the bonds is you give the company the index fund, your
- 37:03money, and then that money gets invested by what they think they
- 37:07want to invest in. Now I know you've heard of
- 37:14Bernie Madoff, no? Bernie Madoff.
- 37:19Yeah, he got arrested for it and that the term just slipped my
- 37:23mind. I had it the pyramid scheme.
- 37:26No, it's not a pyramid scheme. What?
- 37:30Do me a favor, look at what Bernie Madoff got arrested for.
- 37:33I can't remember the term is is escaping me right now.
- 37:36How do you? Even spell Bernie.
- 37:39Just BRN i.e. AI can fix misspelling.
- 37:46Just type whatever you want. Bernie Madoff?
- 37:49Yeah, mastermind of the largest known Ponzi's.
- 37:52Scheme. Ponzi scheme.
- 37:53That's the word, not pyramid. It was AP.
- 37:56So here's how it works. OK, people gave Bernie money,
- 38:02and let's say 10 people gave Bernie $10.00, so he has $100.
- 38:06Yeah. Five of those people got $12.00
- 38:10back and the others did not get any.
- 38:14So they invested those five people's money into those first
- 38:17ten, and then they tell their friends and they get more
- 38:20people. They put more money in and he
- 38:22pays off the other people with that money.
- 38:25So the money he's getting from new people is actually paying
- 38:27off old people. And the old people are saying,
- 38:29wow, I made X amount of dollars, I'm going to give you more
- 38:33money. But he's paying people back that
- 38:39every put money in like a couple years ago.
- 38:41So it's not a legit thing. But Bernie Madoff was a
- 38:47respected businessman, so why wouldn't you give him money?
- 38:54The stock market houses are being bought by companies that
- 39:00own several houses in the city, right?
- 39:04They fix them up and they sell them.
- 39:05But because they own so many houses, they can charge more for
- 39:09rent because other houses aren't available for the regular
- 39:13people. So when they sell it, they can
- 39:16sell at a higher price, they can rent a higher price, whatever
- 39:18the case may be. Texas just put a stop to that.
- 39:22Governments cannot, cannot invest in, I mean, companies
- 39:31cannot invest in buying property.
- 39:33So that's going to bring down the prices of houses too and
- 39:35make them more available, I think.
- 39:38I would hope so. That that's the goal, right?
- 39:42But if I was investing with that company, I'd be making money
- 39:48right at the same time, could they take my money and steal it?
- 39:51And yeah, because it's, I don't have any guarantee of it.
- 39:54It's not in a safe place. So when you're investing in
- 39:58funds, make sure you research the fund, make sure that, you
- 40:00know, they've been around there with a a good company and
- 40:03understand that, you know, you want to make sure they're good.
- 40:07Now another thing happens a lot is companies get bought out,
- 40:10right? Like Rd. bought out Mackey.
- 40:15OK, Yeah. Road is a better company than
- 40:22Mackey and it's absorbing it into Road and it's going to
- 40:25raise Mackey to Rd. standards. That's that's what it's supposed
- 40:29to be. It's supposed to be OK.
- 40:31I would hope so. So if you research a company
- 40:34like for example, I, I bank online with Blue Vine and you
- 40:38know, that's not a big bank, but that's the company I, I have and
- 40:43they just got bought by Valley Bank and that's going to open up
- 40:46more options for me because blue line was just a business account
- 40:50really. Now I have all of that.
- 40:53So when something gets bought out it, it increases your value
- 40:58in it. Maybe not your money so much.
- 41:00Maybe they'll be able to give you more money on savings
- 41:02accounts, that kind of stuff, you know.
- 41:05And last but not least, you have Iras and the four O 1 KS.
- 41:11There's some terms inside here that you need to be aware of.
- 41:15There's a term called being vetted.
- 41:17I mean vested, OK, before the company will pay into your
- 41:23account, you have to be there a whole year.
- 41:27And then when you reach the year, they give you X amount of
- 41:29dollars into your 4O1K all right, but you have to be
- 41:34vested. Now you can be investing in that
- 41:36four O 1K the whole year. They just don't match it.
- 41:39So a lot of times you have companies putting in three to 5%
- 41:44into a savings fund for you, OK, plus you're 3 to 5%.
- 41:49So again, I don't know percentages specifically is
- 41:52where you go talk to a financial advisor.
- 41:54But if you can put as much money as you wanted to four O 1K plan,
- 42:01I don't think there's a limit, OK, If they invested, right,
- 42:06That plan when we're talking about funds are managed by a
- 42:09group. If they save that money, it gets
- 42:12put away and before you know it, your investment goes up, right?
- 42:17A Roth four O 1 is, I mean a Roth IRA is after Oh by the way,
- 42:24those funds that go into the four O 1K are non taxed.
- 42:27So like if you make $1000 a month and you invest 100, a $100
- 42:31goes in there and then you only get taxed on your 900.
- 42:34But when you take it out, you get taxed on everything you put
- 42:37in there because it hasn't been taxed, including the gains.
- 42:41The Roth IRA is you put money in there after taxes and you can
- 42:46put up to like 6800, I forget what the number is.
- 42:50Every year when you pull out, the only thing that you'd pay
- 42:56interest on is the interest. So those are the four things we
- 43:02talked about when we're investing.
- 43:04That's a lot, right? We're not even talking about
- 43:08crypto 4X, none of that stuff. I'll tell you what, let's hear
- 43:13the story from the fire that we have for today and we can
- 43:16definitely discuss, sorry, Lena's story.
- 43:29All right? Lena has a story that at 22 she
- 43:32started investing. So let's let's hear her story,
- 43:34all right? In today's story from the fire,
- 43:45Lena started investing $100 a month in a Roth IRA at age 22.
- 43:51By 32, she had over $20,000 and she barely noticed the money
- 43:55leaving her account. Her future self is already
- 43:58thanking her for starting early. That was a story from the fire,
- 44:01Murph. Man, are you feeling the heat?
- 44:11I'm definitely feeling the heat. We have this story from Linda.
- 44:15A hundred a month at age 22. By 32, she had $20,000.
- 44:21Sorry. Honest thing with this new toy.
- 44:24It's not a new toy, OK? Not a new toy, man.
- 44:31OK, I'm sorry. It's because my eyes are like, I
- 44:35don't know why it's hurting my eyes.
- 44:38It's too bright. It's.
- 44:39Too bright. I don't know how bright light,
- 44:43so you know. Night light.
- 44:53We bought this light and I'm I'm going to show you something
- 44:57really cool. It it's it's an LED light that
- 44:59you can go from warm to cool colors, but it's remote
- 45:02controlled right. Every every fan has that right,
- 45:05But this one has different speeds on the fan and I'm
- 45:10putting up to maximum speed and it it blows.
- 45:13You can feel the blowing on it, right?
- 45:15The breeze, yeah. Not the blow.
- 45:18You can feel the breeze blowing. Is that better?
- 45:21Yeah. Now don't talk and listen to how
- 45:24quiet it is. You can't hear it.
- 45:31How cool is that? That's very cool.
- 45:34So. Now I'm cold.
- 45:36Thank you for that. I turned it off already, but
- 45:40yeah, so part of it Connors like it's too bright.
- 45:43So he was changing the light. I had it in there because I'd
- 45:45like to break, you know, But that's the thing.
- 45:47You can adjust it for each person so.
- 45:49Yeah, it was just, I don't know, it was in my eyes directly and I
- 45:53was on the screen like the computer last night.
- 45:55So I had to rest my eyes and they come back the next morning.
- 46:00Poor baby. Some more bright lights.
- 46:02Poor baby. Whatever, whatever.
- 46:06We we paid to have the light blocked the blue blocker.
- 46:10Remember we talked about that should help you when you have on
- 46:14the computers. I think it's because I work at
- 46:17night that's why. Well, yeah, maybe so it's a
- 46:21little bit. There's no really blue light if
- 46:23it's just one light. Completely different side note
- 46:26here. If you're studying for college
- 46:28or school, high school, whatever, and you're doing work,
- 46:32do it on a desk with the light on, not on your bed with the
- 46:34lights off and TV on. Well now just have lights on
- 46:39anywhere you go. Yeah.
- 46:42Because just that computer light does not help.
- 46:46Right. At all.
- 46:48My eyes are hurting. Maybe you need to get off your
- 46:51goddamn phone. I'm not.
- 46:54I wasn't even on as much last night or yesterday.
- 46:58That just shows how often you study.
- 47:00You're not used to doing it. Yeah.
- 47:04Anyway, you know, we've talked about the question.
- 47:07We talked about what compounded interest was.
- 47:09We talked about her definitions. We talked about the story with
- 47:11Lenna and how she invested her money.
- 47:13But now let's get to what you can do to invest money.
- 47:18All right, let's get to this call to action called the Heat
- 47:21map. All righty.
- 47:31The heat map will show you where to focus your efforts for the
- 47:34most impact. If your job offers a four O 1K
- 47:37match, contribute enough to get the full match.
- 47:40It's free money. Open a Roth IRA and automate
- 47:44monthly contributions to save for retirement tax free.
- 47:47Invest consistently in low cost index funds for reliable long
- 47:51term growth. Avoid the distraction of trying
- 47:54to pick individual stocks manually.
- 47:57Murph man, the MIC is yours to walk through these action items.
- 48:06All right. Testing.
- 48:07Hello. No, you could hear it.
- 48:09It's just me. It's the mic.
- 48:10I don't. Even hear it.
- 48:14OK, yeah, I don't know what you don't hear.
- 48:19Sorry, guys. Every time I talk, apparently I
- 48:23have some static with it. I think it's because I'm talking
- 48:26too quietly. I don't know.
- 48:30I don't know, but there's actually something I'm doing to
- 48:34fix the Mickey. I'm not going to do it right
- 48:35now, but we're going to finally get it tuned to our voices.
- 48:42So I say finally, we're already in episode 56.
- 48:47Finally, after let's see 56 weeks.
- 48:51Over a year of shows. That's how many months or what?
- 48:5912 months and two weeks or 4 weeks, so 13 months.
- 49:11Yeah, yeah, yeah. Our first episode was.
- 49:16August 4th, 2025. So it's been a year and two
- 49:23months. Right.
- 49:25But we took that month off when we were redoing the studio.
- 49:29Oh, well, true. Yeah.
- 49:32Well, no, because we still made the same amount of episodes we
- 49:35would have made in that month, No.
- 49:37There was some that we took a radio day.
- 49:40Because we did episode. We couldn't do an episode.
- 49:44We did it the other. Day we did some that were
- 49:46advanced, so we did some, yes, but there was some that we still
- 49:50weren't ready with the studio, so we tore everything down and
- 49:53we couldn't record because it would have been a torn down
- 49:55studio. So we took a couple radio days
- 49:57and then you came in here and you fixed everything up.
- 49:59This is all his work, by the way.
- 50:02True, yeah. Right.
- 50:05OK. So yeah, anyway, let's get to
- 50:10the heat map. Your job offers a four O 1K
- 50:13match, contributing up to get the full match.
- 50:15It's free money. So if you invest a dollar,
- 50:20they're going to give you a dollar, but if you invest 100,
- 50:23they're going to give you 100 because they match up to a
- 50:26certain amount. So you want to Max that.
- 50:28That's free money. You're literally doubling your
- 50:30money without any interest compounding yet.
- 50:34Think about that. If I put 100, I put 100 and now
- 50:35I have $200 in the account, right?
- 50:39That's really cool. They match.
- 50:42That's the difference between matching and vetted or vested
- 50:45and them giving you a certain amount of your paycheck into
- 50:48there. They can, they can vest you and
- 50:51then once they start putting money in every month, if you
- 50:55don't match it, you're not losing any money.
- 50:57They're giving you that here. If you, if you have a matching
- 50:59fund, you have to put money in and they match what you put in
- 51:02to a certain amount. So you're immediately doubling
- 51:05your money. I don't know what the maximum
- 51:09amounts are or anything. Check with a financial
- 51:11consultant, but think about that.
- 51:14You double your money immediately.
- 51:18That's pretty cool, right? Yeah.
- 51:20OK. I'm sorry, what was that?
- 51:25close the door so and then, well, sorry, Open a Roth IRA and
- 51:35automate monthly contributions to save your retirement tax
- 51:38free. Remember we talked about this,
- 51:40the investment is tax free. It's tax free because you're
- 51:49paying, you're putting into it after taxes have been taking
- 51:54out, then invest consistently in low cost index funds for
- 51:58reliable long term growth. If you're in TikTok and you're
- 52:02talking about different things that we're doing, OK, there's a
- 52:06TikTok out there about if I pay your investment banker up 1% of
- 52:11your income, well, because they're managing it for you,
- 52:15they're doing the investing for you.
- 52:16That's what you're paying them for.
- 52:18But if you could do it yourself, it lowers the cost of the next
- 52:23one. OK.
- 52:29Excuse me And avoid the distraction of trying to pick
- 52:32individual stocks manually. There is so much you could do
- 52:37with investing nowadays. You can literally go in and
- 52:43research stocks. You have the Internet.
- 52:45Before you had to read the paper and you you didn't get a real
- 52:48time. You know, you know the banner
- 52:50that goes across the bottom? Those are called tickers.
- 52:53Do you know why they're called tickers?
- 52:55Because it's a clock. No, sorry.
- 53:00The batter goes across the bottom.
- 53:02Is it a clock? Well, but like it's changing, so
- 53:07it's like over time. No, no.
- 53:13A ticker is a machine that would receive an electronic signal and
- 53:17it would type and it would come out of this ribbon of paper and
- 53:22that's why it's called ticker. And you would have to get the
- 53:26stocks as they came in. So you have to read the entire
- 53:30ribbon for getting back to the stock you're interested in.
- 53:34So that's how the old days were. Damn.
- 53:37OK. If you're on the Internet, you'd
- 53:42see stocks prices real time with a a minute or a couple minutes
- 53:46delay because you can't see it as it's happening.
- 53:51The stock brokers that are on the ground in Wall Street that
- 53:55trade, they're the ones that see the actual numbers, but
- 54:00investment brokers, they have the actual numbers too.
- 54:03The Internet is a little delayed, but if you can get in
- 54:06on something right away, boom, you're in and you're good.
- 54:09OK. So keep that in mind as we take
- 54:15a second break. And when we come back from the
- 54:18break, we're going to talk about those pitfalls that you might
- 54:20have in investing. So we'll be right back after
- 54:24these messages. It's time for a break.
- 54:28Hot takes with the Murph man. We'll be right back.
- 54:56Stepping out this hotel window and floors above, what's missing
- 55:03down there is love. Thinking through the smoke that
- 55:11fills my mind. Don't worry, it's not my first
- 55:16time. I've been looking for you since
- 55:38I stepped foot in this town. Say it's all inside heaven and
- 55:59hell. What happened to that Angel when
- 56:03he fell? Give it one try.
- 56:09Tell me you don't like it. Maybe.
- 56:12God for a moment. Don't survive this.
- 56:15I need your amigo. So good seeing you.
- 56:23I won't be seeing you around. I need your amigo.
- 56:33I've been looking for you. Step aside and breathe.
- 57:08Play a little in the street. Hope it's not me they're
- 57:13sending. Get the kids a little scared.
- 57:23Holy fences, they need mending. So glad seeing you.
- 57:34I won't be seeing you around. He was Amiga.
- 57:43I've been looking for you and I step bored in this town.
- 57:49He was Amiga seeing you. He's seeing you around.

- 59:32Dallas Alexander song that just played.
- 59:34Adios amigo. One of my favorite songs of all
- 59:37time, I think. What do you think, Connor?
- 59:39Of all time. Of all time.
- 59:41That's a little too much you. Think it's a little too much?
- 59:43Why do you say that? And.
- 59:44Of all the songs you would play this, would you add this to your
- 59:49playlist to listen to like in the car?
- 59:53No, I don't like to listen to it here.
- 59:55Yeah. You know, I'm trying to do
- 59:59something here and it's not letting me.
- 1:00:02Yeah, I had it set up beforehand.
- 1:00:04Well, that's not what I wanted to do.
- 1:00:13That was another thing I was trying to do.
- 1:00:14Oh. Well.
- 1:00:18All right. Thank you.
- 1:00:20Though I'm a, I'm an Android guy.
- 1:00:24I don't do the Apple, Apple stuff.
- 1:00:30So it's it's all new to me. Even though I've had it for a
- 1:00:37couple years now. You've had it for a long time.
- 1:00:39Like how much? How long do you think it it it's
- 1:00:42been? 7th grade. 6th grade when we
- 1:00:48moved here. Yeah, I'd say that.
- 1:00:51I had the iPhone XR in red. In red.
- 1:00:57Yep. Is that what you had?
- 1:00:59Yep. From what I remember, yeah.
- 1:01:05Was it red? There's no red iPhones.
- 1:01:08Yeah, there is. There could be any color, dude.
- 1:01:12There's turquoise, there's Ember, there's lag.
- 1:01:18Look, look it up. Different colors of iPhones on
- 1:01:22your phone. OK, here I'm, I'm trying to get
- 1:01:28this out here. You guys, I'm sorry so you can
- 1:01:31talk about this. No cameras found.
- 1:01:37I'm not trying to watch a camera, I'm trying to share a
- 1:01:39screen. Of what phone?
- 1:01:44Cell phone, What colors have they had?
- 1:01:47Of like all the phones what because they they.
- 1:01:52Color iPhones have been just That's what I'm asking I.
- 1:01:54Don't know, Sean, there's a lot they don't have every color of
- 1:01:58the same iPhone every model has. I didn't ask you the model, I
- 1:02:01said what colors have they come in?
- 1:02:03That's it. I.
- 1:02:03Don't know, Red, black, silver, white, burgundy, like there's a
- 1:02:08lot. Dude, I asked you to look it up.
- 1:02:10I'm looking it up. So read them.
- 1:02:12What are the colors? All right, that's what I'm
- 1:02:13asking. Literally I'm telling you the
- 1:02:16colors. Jesus Christ, What?
- 1:02:19You're telling me the colors? I'm telling you the colors.
- 1:02:21I'm literally telling you the colors.
- 1:02:22No, you're telling me you're just giving me what you
- 1:02:25remember. I'm asking Tell me when where
- 1:02:28the red one is. That's what I want to.
- 1:02:30See then red. Same red.
- 1:02:34Sorry you guys tell you we're real father son stuff can see.
- 1:02:44So yeah, I'm trying to get my camera set up.
- 1:02:47IPhone XR, iPhone 11 and iPhone 12 they had red different types
- 1:02:50of red. Really.
- 1:02:51Yes. OK, see, I didn't know that.
- 1:02:54I didn't know that, so thank you for telling me.
- 1:02:58All right. Anyway, I'm having trouble with
- 1:03:02this here. What are you trying to do?
- 1:03:06Compounded interest. So do me a favor, give me the
- 1:03:10keyboard. All right, everyone, hold on
- 1:03:15here for a SEC. Let me get to my my screen share
- 1:03:20here. So, compounded interest, I'm
- 1:03:28going to show you how this works.
- 1:03:29OK. So let's see kind of how, what
- 1:03:36do you think it takes to get to $1,000,000 starting at your age?
- 1:03:40I don't know, it depends how much money I make.
- 1:03:44Right. But I mean like, what do you
- 1:03:46think? I don't know.
- 1:03:49It could be 10 years. I would say maybe.
- 1:03:55To get $2,000,000, well, if you have $100,000 a year job, yeah,
- 1:03:5910 years you'll get a million. But I'm talking about investing.
- 1:04:0330 I would say takes a while. All right, let's see here.
- 1:04:14Let's see if it we can do this. All right, that's what I wanted
- 1:04:17to see. Now let me come over here and
- 1:04:20share it. That's why do you have that.
- 1:04:26All right, hold on, I'm coming. I'm coming.
- 1:04:28All right, So what I'm going to do right now is I'm going to
- 1:04:32show you how this works and how we get the money put into this,
- 1:04:35OK? Part of it is as we get the
- 1:04:39money, we invested in a certain amount.
- 1:04:43So this is how it works, OK? So as we're doing this, I want
- 1:04:47you to think about it. Let's start off with an initial
- 1:04:50deposit, OK, $100 a month. OK, we're going to do months
- 1:04:57here over 40 years. All right, APR, simple one here,
- 1:05:06OK, for 40, this deposit, 40 months.
- 1:05:13No, that's, that's forty months. I'm sorry, 40 * 12480.
- 1:05:22All right. So your $100 becomes, oh, that's
- 1:05:27not right. This calculator is not doing
- 1:05:29what it's supposed to. What do you mean?
- 1:05:33I'm putting in $100 a month, but it's not doing it that way.
- 1:05:37So if I put $1000, Yeah. It's from when whatever you
- 1:05:43would deposit and then just how long it stays in the account
- 1:05:48for. Yeah, so it this is not what I
- 1:05:52was looking for. Well, that's how.
- 1:05:54You but but The thing is your money grows in five years 160
- 1:05:59dollars OK, but if you this is not that's ACD that's why hold
- 1:06:07on. I am so sorry then, I hate this.
- 1:06:22Everyone's seen how bad my typing is.
- 1:06:25Really bad It is. I'm not going to lie, it is very
- 1:06:29bad, OK? There, right there, right there.
- 1:06:40There we go. All right, so initial investment
- 1:06:44$1000, monthly contribution $100, terms in years 40.
- 1:06:52All right. An interest rate of let's say
- 1:06:553%, how much do you think you're going to have at the end of the
- 1:07:0340 years putting $100 a month? I don't know, almost 100,000.
- 1:07:18So 480 months, $100 each, that's 48,000 you're putting in, but at
- 1:07:26the end of 40 years, you're having 100,000.
- 1:07:34You see how that works? This is just investing at 3%
- 1:07:36interest. That's what the green line is.
- 1:07:39But compounded interest, you're getting this much more.
- 1:07:43That's what, 3% interest? Yeah.
- 1:07:46But if you go and you say compounded this to monthly, this
- 1:07:52is where quarterly compounded quarterly, look at the
- 1:07:56difference in the amount 5000. But if you get a 10% interest
- 1:08:01rate, look at the difference three times the amount.
- 1:08:08Let me do 663,000 same money, different interest rate,
- 1:08:14different quarterly compounded. So let's do this, do it annually
- 1:08:19calculate that's more realistic. But your 100,000 investment at
- 1:08:243% and that gives you 500,000 at 10%.
- 1:08:30Do you see the 4400 thousand dollar difference just for those
- 1:08:33seven percentage points? Yes, that is what compounded
- 1:08:37interest does for you. OK, that that's what's so, so
- 1:08:41interesting about the, the funds and how they're deposited and
- 1:08:47how they're compounded and everything.
- 1:08:50So keep that in mind as you invest money, OK, it's a long
- 1:08:55term investment, but even $100 a month, think about that Connor,
- 1:08:58right now at $100 a month, OK, if you had a paycheck and you
- 1:09:04put $100 a month away, great. But when you get to your first
- 1:09:08real job and you get $50,000 a year, now that 100 can become
- 1:09:13200 maybe, right? Imagine when I die and you have
- 1:09:1915 or sixteen, $1700 a month that you can invest that math,
- 1:09:27you had a one and a half million easy.
- 1:09:32So compounded interest has a really, really big deal on, on
- 1:09:35how you save and how, how much your investment earns and all
- 1:09:38that, right? Yeah.
- 1:09:40OK. Anything of this interesting to
- 1:09:42you at all? Yeah, that's like stuff I
- 1:09:45learned in math. Well, you, yeah, you learned it,
- 1:09:48but did you understand it? Did you understand what it
- 1:09:51meant? OK, it really putting in money
- 1:09:55is one of those things that you you really can't calculate.
- 1:10:02So let's talk about some of the pitfalls you'll have in where
- 1:10:05you'll get burned. Let's talk about where you'll
- 1:10:16get burned through these common pitfalls.
- 1:10:19Waiting until you know everything before taking any
- 1:10:21action. Chasing hot individual stocks
- 1:10:25instead of sticking to diversified options, Panicking
- 1:10:28during market dips and selling investments at a loss.
- 1:10:32Treating long term investing like a short term Sprint.
- 1:10:36Over to you, Murph Mann, to steer us clear of these pitfalls
- 1:10:39all. Right.
- 1:10:40Wait until you know everything before you do this.
- 1:10:44It's not good, OK, because you're just wasting time chasing
- 1:10:48hot individual stocks instead of sticking to diversified options.
- 1:10:51Diversified meaning across different things.
- 1:10:54Like for example, if we invest in AI in computers, right, and
- 1:11:01the computer goes away for whatever reason, then that stock
- 1:11:09goes away. So they want to be diversified,
- 1:11:11have it in food, have it in drinks, have it in tech, have it
- 1:11:14in bonds and index funds and you know, diversify your account.
- 1:11:18Don't just get one type of fund or one type of stock or
- 1:11:21whatever. Tasting those stocks is where
- 1:11:26you lose your money. All right, while you're
- 1:11:30researching it and you say I'm going to wait till I understand
- 1:11:32it all. No, just put a little bit of
- 1:11:33money away and just basic savings and it'll compound.
- 1:11:36But if you're trying to get hot, that doesn't work either.
- 1:11:39That's day trading and some people are good at it.
- 1:11:42You know some people are not and then panicking during market
- 1:11:45dips, selling investments at a loss.
- 1:11:47Now let's talk about that real quick.
- 1:11:53When stocks are going down, let's say I'm, I'm investing
- 1:11:55$100 a month in Coke, Coca-Cola, although Coke is a really good
- 1:12:02return under anyway, you're paying $1000 a month or $100 a
- 1:12:10month into Coke stock, right? And the stock crashes to $20
- 1:12:14from 100, right? You're like, what was worth
- 1:12:19100,000 is now worth 20,000. If you hadn't a lot of
- 1:12:22investors, I'm just using basic numbers here.
- 1:12:25And you keep investing the $100. Well, guess what?
- 1:12:28Instead of buying 1 stock at 100, you're buying five at 20.
- 1:12:32So when that bounces back, you can be way ahead.
- 1:12:36So a lot of people say it's going down, don't invest.
- 1:12:38Actually, that's the best time to invest because stocks are
- 1:12:42going down. Now, are they going down because
- 1:12:45the market and so on and so forth, or are they going down
- 1:12:48because that's what it should be, right.
- 1:12:51And if something happened to the company, like let's say Subway,
- 1:12:57they had a spokesman, Jared. Have you ever seen Jared?
- 1:12:59No, he, he got hired to be the spokesman of Subway because he
- 1:13:04went in every day and bought Subs and he, he showed his
- 1:13:06weight loss and Subway say, come on and work for us.
- 1:13:09Well, turns out he's he was a pedophile, so his whole campaign
- 1:13:13got blasted and Subway lost a bunch of funds.
- 1:13:16They've recovered since, but they were, I think they were
- 1:13:20even higher back then. So ask yourself, why are they
- 1:13:24going down? Is it just the whole market
- 1:13:26going down or is it just that one stock or that one area of
- 1:13:29stocks? Like the diversification we
- 1:13:31talked about, technology can go up, but everything else stays
- 1:13:33the same. Right now, food prices are going
- 1:13:35up because oil is going up, you know, and this, do you
- 1:13:37understand how that works, by the way, why how oil goes up and
- 1:13:40our food prices go up? All right, A truck cost $100 to
- 1:13:46go from New York to LA, right? And their gas cost was $20.
- 1:13:53Now their gas cost is 50. What are they going to share?
- 1:13:58So another, the company that pays them is going to charge the
- 1:14:02shipper and the shippers are going to charge the company that
- 1:14:05shipped the the product or money.
- 1:14:06So they're going to raise their prices at the grocery store to
- 1:14:10pay for the truck to get to us, and then the prices of our food
- 1:14:16goes up. Yeah, OK.
- 1:14:19Now with the oil companies, they will sometimes stop producing so
- 1:14:25much oil. So there's less oil out there.
- 1:14:28And because of that, there's not enough oil to really keep up the
- 1:14:31demand. So when when a company A can pay
- 1:14:34you 100 and Company B pays you 200, you're going to ship it
- 1:14:38with Company B and now your gas is going to go up.
- 1:14:41OK, Couple years ago, I want to say during COVID or right after
- 1:14:46COVID, there was a container ship.
- 1:14:50You know, a container ship is right that was stranded in this
- 1:14:54in I believe the Suez Canal. I might be completely wrong on
- 1:14:58that. Don't, don't quote me, that one
- 1:15:02ship was blocking product to get here.
- 1:15:07Some of those products were perishable, meaning they were
- 1:15:09food and they expired and they went bad and they molded.
- 1:15:13So all that was lost. So those companies that were
- 1:15:15expecting to sell it at the market lost millions and
- 1:15:18millions of billions of dollars. If you actually look it up,
- 1:15:21you'll see, but that those companies had to recoup those
- 1:15:25millions of dollars. So prices all over the world
- 1:15:27went up, you know, and once the chain started moving again and
- 1:15:35people had the product, they didn't lower their prices.
- 1:15:38So that's one of those things where prices go up and no one
- 1:15:42says, and I'll tell you how this works.
- 1:15:44I was at Arby's yesterday, but a large, an extra large drink.
- 1:15:49How much do you think that drink cost now?
- 1:15:52354 bucks. 420 OK, I was complaining when it was $2.00 a
- 1:15:59drink. Now it's more than double.
- 1:16:02It's crazy. So everything is going up and
- 1:16:09stocks and bonds, you know go up and down.
- 1:16:12Now if the price of oil is going up, but your market is going up,
- 1:16:16right? You can say as a consumer it
- 1:16:19sucks for me, but as an investor it's great because I'm making
- 1:16:21more money because what oil is going to drop down again?
- 1:16:25Now you can do futures where you bet on the stock to go down and
- 1:16:30you were right, So you win. You know, there's all these
- 1:16:33sorts in there. There's all these sorts.
- 1:16:34I don't care about them, all right?
- 1:16:36But when you're really looking at all of it, you can say, hey,
- 1:16:40these are things that I can invest money in.
- 1:16:43Why should I invest in? Research a little bit,
- 1:16:45understand it more, and you'll be able to invest your money
- 1:16:50safely and not really be too big of an issue.
- 1:16:55OK, What are you thinking? No, I'm just.
- 1:16:58Yeah, put any comments instead of private talk.
- 1:17:05Yeah, I kind of forgot. It kind of forgot.
- 1:17:11Well, for those of you reading the chat, yeah, it's pretty
- 1:17:16funny. Connor.
- 1:17:17He was putting out private business out there.
- 1:17:20Yeah, my bad. All right, so we've talked about
- 1:17:22where you're going to get burned.
- 1:17:23Let's talk about those things that will stop you from getting
- 1:17:25burned and avoid those pitfalls in our statement called heat
- 1:17:29Shields. Here are your heat Shields.
- 1:17:40Intentional prep through dedicated research sessions.
- 1:17:43Regular portfolio check. Insurance to guard against
- 1:17:46external pressure. Automated systems that protect
- 1:17:49your strategy from emotional decision making.
- 1:17:52Continuous learning to stay grounded during market
- 1:17:55volatility. Murph man, take it away with
- 1:17:58these protective strategies. All right, so let's talk about
- 1:18:02this a little bit. Intentional prep through
- 1:18:05dedicated research sessions. It's a job, you're making money.
- 1:18:08You have to work at it. You can't just put money in and
- 1:18:10don't touch. And because you don't know
- 1:18:12what's happening in the stock market, you could just be
- 1:18:13blowing your money and wasting it, right?
- 1:18:17So we want to make sure we do that correctly.
- 1:18:20As you go forward on this, you want to have some knowledge, OK,
- 1:18:28Research it a little bit. And again, people use AI for
- 1:18:31everything. I don't say use AI to invest,
- 1:18:34but you can say I don't understand what's happening in
- 1:18:36the market. Explain it to me and it'll
- 1:18:38explain to you. Now I want to invest in tech
- 1:18:41bonds or tech stock or tech funds.
- 1:18:44What do you recommend? And it starts giving you ideas.
- 1:18:46Don't say I have $100, how do I invest?
- 1:18:48It is. It might help you, but then
- 1:18:50again it might not because AI can be wrong and like was
- 1:18:54Thursday or Friday, Google had a worldwide shutdown like AI
- 1:19:00wasn't working. Wow.
- 1:19:02And I was just like, this is crazy.
- 1:19:04You know, I'm trying to do some work and I couldn't do it.
- 1:19:07I was doing my contracts and I couldn't do it.
- 1:19:11What happened or what? I, I never bothered looking up
- 1:19:14why it went down. OK, but I bet you, if you looked
- 1:19:16at the stock market at that moment, people panicked and they
- 1:19:19sold the stock in Google and the price went down.
- 1:19:23But I'll, and it's going to go back up and those people are
- 1:19:26losing all the money. So regular portfolio check
- 1:19:30insurance to guard against external pressure.
- 1:19:33When you have a portfolio, you want to make sure you go into it
- 1:19:36and check it on a on basis because if you're, if you have
- 1:19:39any money and it's going down, down, down, you're not checking
- 1:19:41it for three months, you've lost thousands of dollars.
- 1:19:43You're like, ah, crap, I should have checked it sooner, right?
- 1:19:45And then automated systems that protect your strategy from
- 1:19:49emotional decision making. If you have $100 going into your
- 1:19:52bank account before you even see your paycheck, you don't tend to
- 1:19:55think about it and it's hard to stop at $100, OK, it's hard to
- 1:20:02say, OK, we have this, we have that.
- 1:20:06But what I do now, you know when you have the money going out of
- 1:20:11your account, you don't even see it automatically like your
- 1:20:14vested IRA funds or Roth IRA, whatever you're going to put in
- 1:20:17and it's automatically to have your paycheck.
- 1:20:20It goes on. You don't think twice about it,
- 1:20:22you don't, you know, but if you don't invest like that from the
- 1:20:29very beginning, like I said, $100 a month right now to you is
- 1:20:32hard because you don't have $100, right?
- 1:20:35If you can put ten or five, put 10 or 5, right?
- 1:20:38That's the way it goes. And then when you make more
- 1:20:44money, you put a percentage back in and more money.
- 1:20:47And if you can live safely on a certain amount and you get a
- 1:20:51raise, put that raise into savings, don't even touch it.
- 1:20:57And then as you get older and you get more money, more
- 1:21:01experience, more money goes into savings and you need to keep
- 1:21:04living on the same amount, maybe a little more because obviously
- 1:21:06things getting more expensive, but you're able to save money
- 1:21:10like that investing your, your salary increases.
- 1:21:14All right. And learning to stay grounded
- 1:21:17during volatile markets. We talked about this the two
- 1:21:22days, Black Monday, right? And Black Friday.
- 1:21:27I think it was right. Which one was the Great
- 1:21:30Depression? Tuesday?
- 1:21:35Was it Tuesday? OK it.
- 1:21:38Was on a Tuesday. All right, I thought it was
- 1:21:41Friday and a Monday. Well, look at it.
- 1:21:46My phone's off is charging. When when were those market
- 1:21:56failures market crash? Let's see.
- 1:22:08That's the better term. Yeah, that failures crash.
- 1:22:10Black Thursday. Black Monday.
- 1:22:12Black Tuesday. OK, which one is?
- 1:22:15Tell me what Thursday? Tell me what each one was just.
- 1:22:18Right Black Thursday it was just the panic selling.
- 1:22:24So 12.9 million shares got traded like Monday and it
- 1:22:29plunged 13%. That means 13% of the world's
- 1:22:34worth just dropped. And then Black Tuesday was where
- 1:22:3916,000,000 shares were traded, which wiped out billions of
- 1:22:43dollars. Billions, OK, if you don't have
- 1:22:49the the good savings, if you don't have stuff like that and
- 1:22:54your life depends on marketing and on investing and you know,
- 1:22:59you have to pay things, whatever the case may be, if you don't
- 1:23:03have that anymore, your value goes down.
- 1:23:05People were killing themselves. They were literally jumping out
- 1:23:08of their buildings after they saw the ticker.
- 1:23:11You know, things are going to go up and down.
- 1:23:16OK. And in some cases, yeah, they're
- 1:23:17they can be very bad. There's a movie called Margin
- 1:23:22Call where they had the housing market and there was a bubble
- 1:23:28that they were investing in in the houses and they didn't have
- 1:23:34the value that they needed to sell them.
- 1:23:37So what ended up happening was they had to cut it short and
- 1:23:42just get rid of their properties because they couldn't afford it
- 1:23:44anymore. So what I had for 100,000 is now
- 1:23:49worth 10,000, and I'm asking you to buy it from me.
- 1:23:53And people lost their careers, friendships, they're just so
- 1:23:58much negative stuff went on with it.
- 1:24:00That's not even funny. But it happens, you know, and
- 1:24:05whole careers can turn on a dime there with Bernie Madoff when I
- 1:24:12told you about he stole money, right?
- 1:24:15Yeah. Do you think that small
- 1:24:17companies were investing with him or do you think larger ones
- 1:24:20were? Larger ones I would say.
- 1:24:23Right. So you think about it.
- 1:24:27And the city of New York had his pension fund with him.
- 1:24:34All the people that had a pension lost it I.
- 1:24:37Don't know that's that's insane. It is.
- 1:24:41So, yeah, just be careful when you invest your money, guys.
- 1:24:43OK, well, we've talked about the heat shield and we've talked
- 1:24:48about what we can do to protect ourselves.
- 1:24:51But now I want you to let's get to the afterburn and let's talk
- 1:24:54about those things that we need to do to reflect on what we've
- 1:24:58learned today. In today's Afterburn, here are
- 1:25:10some questions for you to reflect on.
- 1:25:12What's one step I can take to start investing this month?
- 1:25:17How can I make investing feel less intimidating in my daily
- 1:25:20life? What's my long term vision and
- 1:25:24how can money support it? How can I maintain consistency
- 1:25:28over the next decade? Earth Man, the Floor is yours to
- 1:25:32reflect on these questions. All right, so let's look at
- 1:25:37this. OK, The questions are what's one
- 1:25:40step I can take to start investing this month?
- 1:25:42Simple, put money in the bank account.
- 1:25:45Done and you got it. And then the next one is how can
- 1:25:49I make investing feel less intimidating in your daily life?
- 1:25:53Well, as you do it, you have to research a little bit.
- 1:25:57Don't let it consume you. You know, everything in
- 1:25:59moderation is the best thing to do.
- 1:26:00OK. And then what is the long term
- 1:26:03vision and how can money support it?
- 1:26:06Well, if you're trying to invest in and buy a house or invest in
- 1:26:09the business, whatever the case may be, right, Maybe investing
- 1:26:12enough money to where the dividends support you and the
- 1:26:14lifestyle you can have for the rest of your life, right.
- 1:26:17That's that's the goal. And how can I maintain
- 1:26:19consistency over the next decade?
- 1:26:22Notice I said decade, Connor. What does that mean for you?
- 1:26:2610 years. What I meant was, why a decade?
- 1:26:32I don't know, it's a good span. Because investing and earning
- 1:26:36money doesn't happen overnight. It takes a long time, minimum 5
- 1:26:42to 10 years before you really start seeing things, 30 to 40
- 1:26:46years, you're really seeing the growth.
- 1:26:48You know, those 23 cent deposits are now $1000.
- 1:26:53Wow. So it's one of those things that
- 1:26:57you know, how, how do I do this? What do I do?
- 1:27:00You know, what other questions do you have about this?
- 1:27:03I mean, we've been talking about this.
- 1:27:04I know you're really interested in it, but last night when I was
- 1:27:09at dinner, I was talking with my cousin's wife and she says,
- 1:27:13what's your podcast about? And I said college and young
- 1:27:16adult stuff. And she says, like, what?
- 1:27:18And I said, well, like my favorite episode was the Naked
- 1:27:22Roommate. You remember that one?
- 1:27:25Yeah. And she says, Oh my God, I had a
- 1:27:28roommate in college that was a different religion than me.
- 1:27:31And I'm a little more of a party animal.
- 1:27:33And she was more of a strict person on Friday nights,
- 1:27:37couldn't do things. You know, she was just like it.
- 1:27:40There was a big clash there. No one told me that could
- 1:27:43happen. Just I don't know how to handle
- 1:27:45it. I wasn't prepared for it.
- 1:27:47I said that's exactly why I'm doing this, because people don't
- 1:27:51talk about this stuff. This stuff is boring.
- 1:27:53It is, I'm not going to lie, right?
- 1:27:57But if you start investing and start making money, guess what?
- 1:28:02You do pretty good, right? So I know it's boring and it you
- 1:28:07really don't Care now, but when you're my age and your money's
- 1:28:11gone and you have to try to save your wife's life or something
- 1:28:14stupid, that's not stupid terms. Yeah, I mean, but you know,
- 1:28:18things happen and you don't have the money for it.
- 1:28:21You make. Damn it.
- 1:28:22I should have been doing this 50 years ago or 30 years ago.
- 1:28:25Whatever. OK.
- 1:28:28That's why I'm talking about it now.
- 1:28:30That's what's important about investing now is you need to
- 1:28:34make the choice to invest now. Don't wait.
- 1:28:37Don't say I'll wait till I get more money to be able to invest
- 1:28:40more. I'll wait till I do X amount of
- 1:28:42things. Do it because that is where you
- 1:28:49want to be 20 years from now, so many years in advance.
- 1:28:53OK, That's the most important thing you can think of because
- 1:28:57you don't realize how the little things right now matter.
- 1:29:03You really don't. And that's what's that's what's
- 1:29:05so crazy is people don't realize the little things that matter,
- 1:29:10you know, but that's why I do this.
- 1:29:13I do this to help people discuss things that they never knew.
- 1:29:16You know, people just don't know these things.
- 1:29:20Like for example, I have a 30 point checklist that you can do
- 1:29:23before you go to college and it asks you, do you know how to get
- 1:29:29a new bank card? Connor, do you know how to get a
- 1:29:34new bank card? Yeah, I have before and you got
- 1:29:38to get one. You just haven't done it.
- 1:29:43Yeah. Yeah, his card got deactivated
- 1:29:47with a magnet or something and he can't use it.
- 1:29:48He has to order a new card and he's like, I'll just put it into
- 1:29:51my other account. He he doesn't, he doesn't have
- 1:29:54any money in there. But if you started investing,
- 1:29:57you know, maybe you know. Yeah, I just have to get a card.
- 1:30:01Yeah, but you know how to do it. You don't have to come to me to
- 1:30:03do it. Oh yeah, you know.
- 1:30:05How to go to the bank and make a deposit?
- 1:30:07Yeah, yeah. You know how to go to the bank
- 1:30:09and ask questions, like any question you might have.
- 1:30:14Where do you go to the teller? The only person there, yeah.
- 1:30:18That's not the only person there.
- 1:30:20The people at the desk, yeah. People at the desk, Yeah.
- 1:30:23Yeah. You tell them what?
- 1:30:24You no the desk as you walk in the door, they always greet you.
- 1:30:28The teller is where you do financial transactions and the
- 1:30:33offices is where you do standing up for accounts and all that
- 1:30:37stuff. Oh well.
- 1:30:40OK, they do it all over there. Yeah.
- 1:30:41But if you just have it, well, yeah, not to open the account,
- 1:30:45you actually have to go online and do an application and
- 1:30:47everything. To open an account but to like
- 1:30:50just ask questions or do something with the account then?
- 1:30:53Yeah, you don't want to do that to tell her, because they're
- 1:30:55there to get people in and out and there's line swarm and
- 1:30:57everything. So they have people dedicated to
- 1:30:59answering your questions, like the person at the front desk
- 1:31:01you. Know.
- 1:31:03But yeah, you know how to do a lot more than your average
- 1:31:07friends. Can we say that?
- 1:31:09Yeah. Like driving around the town.
- 1:31:12That's different, but OK. It is.
- 1:31:15It is different, but you know how to read signs on highways,
- 1:31:20You know how to read construction and safety signs,
- 1:31:23right? I would hope everybody knows.
- 1:31:24No, dude, no. That's part of the driving
- 1:31:27toast. OK, what's the flashing yellow
- 1:31:30mean? Where?
- 1:31:34On the traffic light? Yield.
- 1:31:37Watch it. How is that?
- 1:31:39Different from a green light. Because green, you just go.
- 1:31:43So then if you're Mexican, you become gringo, you know, getting
- 1:31:50go get it anyway, OK, You're stupid dude, just laugh.
- 1:31:55I'm. I'm trying to make you sound
- 1:31:58stupid. OK, be like, get it.
- 1:32:01Do you know why people have to cross the border with three
- 1:32:04people together? Why?
- 1:32:05I mean with two people and not three?
- 1:32:07Why? Because there's no trespassing
- 1:32:12these people. The only thing come across is 2
- 1:32:14or 4 anyway. Oh God.
- 1:32:22But yeah. So if you if I grew up, it goes
- 1:32:28from a red light to green, then it comes yellow to be careful,
- 1:32:31it's going to turn red here. The arrow goes yellow saying,
- 1:32:36OK, you can turn now, but you have to yield to other people.
- 1:32:41OK. And then it turns green, so you
- 1:32:47can go, OK, It's opposite of what a traffic light works.
- 1:32:55So a lot of people don't know that.
- 1:32:57They just they see a yellow light.
- 1:32:59First time I saw it, I thought it was going to turn red.
- 1:33:02So I boom, I speed through the intersection and Roland, my
- 1:33:06brother was like, what'd you do? Just run the light?
- 1:33:10I'm like, I didn't run the light.
- 1:33:12That's a yield sign. Like I know what yellow means,
- 1:33:14but I really, really thought it was going to turn yellow to red.
- 1:33:18So I got out of the intersections not knowing it was
- 1:33:21going to turn green, but I'd be protected to turn.
- 1:33:23Yeah. I was never taught that.
- 1:33:26It just a good example. Roundabouts, boom, they're there
- 1:33:33and you're like, how do you? No one taught us how to do those
- 1:33:35right. There's still people that don't
- 1:33:37know how to use them. How many roundabouts have you
- 1:33:40been to where you see it? Tracks of a car that go right
- 1:33:43through the middle because they don't see it.
- 1:33:45You know, it's, it's crazy. But anyway, we're going to take
- 1:33:52a quick break and we're going to come back and discuss the
- 1:33:56digital technology that you can use to help you with all of
- 1:34:00this. So we'll be right back.
- 1:34:03It's time for a break. Hot takes with the Murph man.
- 1:34:06We'll be right back. Wonder what's going on inside
- 1:34:26Man in Black's mind? Was he missing Jim?
- 1:34:30Was he thinking by when that picture was not?
- 1:34:35Was he wishing he grew over and he knows life is over?
- 1:34:44Hey, that camera flies. Last picture of Johnny Cash.
- 1:34:55The lights are fair on his face. You are show brains, glory to
- 1:35:02old and shades of blood you see whispering a prayer through that
- 1:35:12cold loose light the day the camera fled that picture of
- 1:35:20Johnny Cat. Hey heaven Angel band don't sing
- 1:35:34in Pure Land worthy fighting the tears bed was he still hearing
- 1:35:45his mind was somewhere on the other side the day the camel
- 1:35:54flash the last picture of Johnny head love the earth his face so

- 1:37:10The station where our NB. Radio.
- 1:37:22Before we get back to the show. I heard the dog and I was like,
- 1:37:28it's over forgetting you have commercials.
- 1:37:31That's my bad. We stream live every Saturday at
- 1:37:3612:00 Eastern. Language.
- 1:37:44You're watching us on MBR or you're watching me on my social
- 1:37:46media as Pure Hot Takes. You can catch us on any social
- 1:37:48media at Pure Hot Takes. Go to check out our website at
- 1:37:52purehottakes.com. We're working on it so it's semi
- 1:37:56updated, but military broadcast radio is a problem that gives
- 1:38:01veterans a voice and they are available to you To go check out
- 1:38:05MBR radio dot US and you can see what they offer you.
- 1:38:10When I first started this, I didn't know anything about
- 1:38:13podcasting and the hardest thing I had to do, I bought some
- 1:38:16equipment that was OK for what we were doing, but we couldn't
- 1:38:22get a good place to do the the podcast.
- 1:38:25We end up using my friends extra spare room, you know, and then
- 1:38:28we moved out to our room here and did the studio.
- 1:38:33But having the location and having the equipment, you still
- 1:38:37got to buy the software to stream.
- 1:38:38There's there's free software like OBS and Restream and Mail
- 1:38:41Studio and there's all these different free ones, but they
- 1:38:48cost money for the better ones. Like Stream Yard cost like
- 1:38:50$60.00 a month and Tik Tok's free.
- 1:38:56YouTube is free, right? Yeah, but if I want to stream to
- 1:39:00all of those using my cell phone, I have to have a phone
- 1:39:03for each program, right? And then I have to buy one of
- 1:39:07those little lapel phones because the mic is going to get
- 1:39:10plugged in, you know, So it's not really too professional, but
- 1:39:15I was looking for places to do my show.
- 1:39:16I went to the library and actually the library would have
- 1:39:18worked for the most part I think, but it would it wouldn't
- 1:39:23look professional. It was too.
- 1:39:25It had too much echoes. No, no, the echoes because we
- 1:39:27didn't turn the mics in the cameras.
- 1:39:29It was Reverb in the room, Sean. It was in a quiet study room.
- 1:39:33Where? We had the same problem in
- 1:39:34Lethi's until they told us what the problem was.
- 1:39:37So The thing is with NBR radio, this military broadcast radio H
- 1:39:42train, the guy who runs it over there is an amazing guy.
- 1:39:45He actually partners with me every Wednesday.
- 1:39:47We do bingo and trivia every Wednesday at 7 on military
- 1:39:50broadcast radio. Right now you can go to see him
- 1:39:53on NBR Talk Roku. He's also there.
- 1:39:57But if you want to start a podcast, reach out to MB radio
- 1:40:01dot US. Those pre broadcast radio will
- 1:40:03help you set it all up. They'll teach you, they'll train
- 1:40:05you. And what was funny was when I
- 1:40:08went to him, he was like, let's start off with this.
- 1:40:11And I'm like, I already know that he goes to start because I
- 1:40:15had been doing my research, right?
- 1:40:17And then we started doing the more advanced stuff and he
- 1:40:20showed me some stuff and I'm like, Oh, I never knew that was
- 1:40:22possible. And you know, and the technology
- 1:40:25associated with doing this. Is amazing right right now this
- 1:40:30is what we're controlling everything with the stream deck
- 1:40:34everything's connected to this everything cameras you name it
- 1:40:38everything's connected to this little thing here because I I
- 1:40:41was able to set up the studio professionally right I could set
- 1:40:45up to be a mute button if I wanted to I could have it cut to
- 1:40:49cameras I could I could do all of that and you don't really
- 1:40:53think of that right but with H train he was he taught me a lot
- 1:40:58about what I needed to do to get this show to the level that I'm
- 1:41:01at now so thank you to H train and military broadcast radio and
- 1:41:04if you want to start this reach out to them you know well,
- 1:41:08Speaking of technology let's get to our digital inferno it's the
- 1:41:13button. The only way to harness compound
- 1:41:22interest is through automation using these methods.
- 1:41:25Robo advisors use platforms like Betterment or Vanguard Personal
- 1:41:29Advisor for automatic transfers. Portfolio management.
- 1:41:33These apps choose low cost index funds and handle regular
- 1:41:37rebalancing. Fatigue reduction.
- 1:41:40Automated tools remove the paralyzing pressure of manual
- 1:41:43market timing. System streamlining.
- 1:41:46Digital setups ensure your contributions happen without
- 1:41:49requiring daily attention. Back to you.
- 1:41:52Murph Mann did break. Egg cut out for me.
- 1:41:58I don't know. He kept talking, I heard static
- 1:42:01and then you went off mute. So I was like, OK.
- 1:42:03Connor, it's press the button. That's all you got to do.
- 1:42:09Just press. And I did press.
- 1:42:13Press did it too early. I know like we can.
- 1:42:16Go back. Just that one second, yeah.
- 1:42:19Actually, we could look, let's see, where is it here and.
- 1:42:23These digital tools. Boom, boom, Yeah.
- 1:42:31Just like just. Like if you have any questions
- 1:42:34about this, this setup we have here, if you want to reach out
- 1:42:37to us, you can reach me at Murphman at purehottakes.com and
- 1:42:41check us out. All right, let's talk about this
- 1:42:43Diligent Inferno real quick. Platforms like Better Men and
- 1:42:46Vanguard Personal Advisor actually give us the program to
- 1:42:51invest automatically. They'll do the transfers for
- 1:42:55you. So that's probably the easiest
- 1:42:56thing you can do. They choose low cost index funds
- 1:42:59and handle regular rebalancing. Rebalancing is when money comes
- 1:43:04in and you have interest and stuff, they they redistribute it
- 1:43:06out to the index funds with the percentages you set and it does
- 1:43:09it for you automatically. And then being automated, they
- 1:43:13remove the paralyzing pressure of manual market timing.
- 1:43:17That's one of those things when you have funds, the people
- 1:43:20running them will buy and sell as they need.
- 1:43:24And last but not least, the digital setups ensure your
- 1:43:26contributions happen without recurring daily attention.
- 1:43:31So you don't need to have that attention to that you you could
- 1:43:37use to invest in it. There's people I know that
- 1:43:39invest every day from the time the bell rings on Wall Street to
- 1:43:42the time it closes. And it's one of those things
- 1:43:45that you you can spend hours doing this if you really wanted
- 1:43:55to. You know, it's it's it's a job
- 1:44:04to invest, you know, and if you do it right, you can not work.
- 1:44:08That's why I think it's so cool, right.
- 1:44:11Yeah. You don't have to work.
- 1:44:12And you can invest money and just sit there at home and and
- 1:44:14read the candles. You know what candles are?
- 1:44:17Yeah. Candles are, when you look at a
- 1:44:19stock, money tells you the range that they're potentially going
- 1:44:23up or down. And if you know how to read
- 1:44:25them, you know you can invest more money.
- 1:44:27But I'll tell you what, I think we're pretty much done for
- 1:44:31today. We got to get to the final
- 1:44:32burden. But do you have anything you
- 1:44:34want to say about any of this? No.
- 1:44:37Just when should I start investing?
- 1:44:42Now. Like now?
- 1:44:45Like now now now. Right now.
- 1:44:47So I could put 5 bucks into what though?
- 1:44:51What would you give me? Does it matter where I go?
- 1:44:54For it to. That was our show today.
- 1:44:56Connor No. No, no, no, no.
- 1:44:58Like is there really a difference with interest rates
- 1:45:02and all that depending on where you go?
- 1:45:04Yes, Yeah, right. Yes.
- 1:45:09I know, I know. It's, I mean, it's impound like
- 1:45:12the compound rate, yeah. No, what I mean is like there's
- 1:45:16banks that offer you better rates, OK.
- 1:45:19But if there's no but I'm explaining.
- 1:45:21There has to be cash. There's no way.
- 1:45:24There's not, but it's a difference of like 3.1 to 3.15.
- 1:45:29It's not a lot of difference. It's something, OK, it is
- 1:45:32something. The more numbers I see, the
- 1:45:35better. Right.
- 1:45:36And then the other thing is, as you're looking at all this
- 1:45:41right, you have CDs, you have stocks, bond, you have all of
- 1:45:49that, you also want to look at what the program is charging you
- 1:45:53to do a transaction, OK, what I mean like?
- 1:45:59Like what transaction? Like when you make the deposit
- 1:46:02that's free, but when you put it into the stock market, they have
- 1:46:05to, they have to work to put it into the stock market.
- 1:46:07So they're going to charge you for that.
- 1:46:09So those fees, you can definitely find out where it's
- 1:46:12cheaper. The they might be investing in
- 1:46:15the same exact things, but their administrative fees are
- 1:46:19different. Like I'll give you an example
- 1:46:21here when we talk about nonprofits and everything,
- 1:46:25right? You've heard of Wounded Warrior?
- 1:46:27No. It's a program that enlightens
- 1:46:31the community about warriors who've been wounded in battle,
- 1:46:35and they get millions of dollars a year.
- 1:46:39Wow. I think it's like 85%, give or
- 1:46:43take. If I'm not wrong, I'm going to
- 1:46:44check me on that. But 85% of the money they get
- 1:46:47in, they spend on advertising, buying merchandise to give away
- 1:46:51to people, to raise awareness. People think it's going to the
- 1:46:55soldiers and it's not. You know, well, here on military
- 1:47:01broadcast radio, every penny and then someone of his pocket goes
- 1:47:07to veterans and giving them a voice.
- 1:47:10Every penny, 100% administrative costs and everything, the
- 1:47:14equipment, everything is everything is for the broadcast
- 1:47:16radio. Could you charge a fee and say
- 1:47:19I'm going to take 10% of that as a salary?
- 1:47:23Yeah. Yeah, right.
- 1:47:24But he doesn't. Well, if he does, he he can.
- 1:47:28Not the point if he does or doesn't.
- 1:47:30That's what administrations do. When you have stocks and bonds,
- 1:47:32they take their percentage out before you.
- 1:47:34You have your money, so those things you can look at and say,
- 1:47:38OK, this is a good 'cause this is a good index fund.
- 1:47:41You know, research and understand what you're where
- 1:47:43you're putting your money, OK. Yeah.
- 1:47:46And start now. That's that's it.
- 1:47:48So let's get to today's final take.
- 1:47:51Hold on. The final take from today's
- 1:48:05discussion is investing isn't about getting rich quick, it's
- 1:48:09about getting free slowly. Start early, stay steady and let
- 1:48:14time do the heavy lifting. The final flame has been struck
- 1:48:18back to Murph Man to wrap the show.
- 1:48:23All right, so the final burn for today is investment isn't about
- 1:48:27getting rich quick. It's about getting free slowly,
- 1:48:32free from all the burdens. All right, start early, stay
- 1:48:35steady, and let time do the heavy lifting for you.
- 1:48:39That commanded interest is going to be something that you will
- 1:48:42always have, and it'll just keep growing whether you touch it or
- 1:48:47not. If you invest more and you do
- 1:48:49more, you can definitely do better.
- 1:48:53OK, So anything else Connor? No.
- 1:48:59For all of you watching on military broadcast radio, thank
- 1:49:02you for your time. Those of you watching this on
- 1:49:04TikTok, thank you for your time. I hope everyone has a wonderful

- 1:49:13Right, everyone have a good night or weekend.
