- 0:26Speaker 1: Hunt app from the iTunes or Google play store. Nor
- 0:29Speaker 1: where you stand with on X. All right, let's um
- 0:37Speaker 1: she probably I know Yanni's gonna want to do it
- 0:39Speaker 1: this way. Yanni's gonna want to start with introductions. He's
- 0:43Speaker 1: always worried about getting his credit. I think let's start
- 0:46Speaker 1: with Johnny. No, I've told you why I'm worried about it.
- 0:49Speaker 1: I'm worried about it really because your dad gets curiously. Yeah,
- 0:54Speaker 1: he really liked He really appreciates that. That like thirty
- 0:57Speaker 1: minutes and he's like, Okay, I know who's talking. He
- 1:01Speaker 1: likes that. Uh So for Jana sr um uh as
- 1:09Speaker 1: though dealing poker Brodie Henderson, it's a little more. You
- 1:14Speaker 1: can do a little more, Meat Eater Senior editor, that's
- 1:17Speaker 1: some talking, a little more, a little little headache this
- 1:19Speaker 1: morning by selling his house. I mean he's a great
- 1:24Speaker 1: fishing property. Dude, Pop want to talk. Yeah, he's got
- 1:27Speaker 1: red Fox in his yard. He can hunt elk basically
- 1:30Speaker 1: in his backyard. He can walk down the hill and
- 1:33Speaker 1: fish giant northerns and catch crayfish and trouse. What else?
- 1:38Speaker 1: How many how many way points does the property come with?
- 1:42Speaker 1: Like in surrounding public? Don't care how much you want
- 1:45Speaker 1: to pay for the place? I guess, Oh yeah, some
- 1:48Speaker 1: where it is south the steamboat springs off the grid, Yes,
- 1:53Speaker 1: but not like that contrus Bomber off the grid. It's
- 1:58Speaker 1: like there's an actual neighborhood with actual houses and you know,
- 2:04Speaker 1: so it's just the annoying parts of being off the grid. Yeah, yeah,
- 2:07Speaker 1: solar it's not bad. No, but for the people that
- 2:10Speaker 1: like want to like feel like they're living in the mountains,
- 2:13Speaker 1: but then have the you're in the mountains, yeah yeah,
- 2:17Speaker 1: I mean I got wilderness area half a mile from
- 2:20Speaker 1: my house. Yeah, but you also have like a lot
- 2:22Speaker 1: of the conveniences that modern day people like to have around. Yeah,
- 2:29Speaker 1: what what give me your Zillo ordeal? Everybody can look
- 2:32Speaker 1: up your estimate. Man, I don't know if I want. Yeah,
- 2:37Speaker 1: it's for sale, all right, don't tell I don't sell
- 2:40Speaker 1: your house, just look up. Founder Rich Pounder was trying
- 2:43Speaker 1: to sell his car on this program, and I think
- 2:45Speaker 1: he might have he got a good offer. Three one
- 2:47Speaker 1: four four zero sho show anyway, Stagecoach Colorado zero, Sam's Quentin,
- 2:59Speaker 1: She's gonna go by Brodie's house. You don't do it,
- 3:05Speaker 1: I mean, come on, because you're like you're like, look,
- 3:06Speaker 1: it's like asking somebody how many acres they have and
- 3:08Speaker 1: how many cows they got on it. I learned that
- 3:10Speaker 1: was a major faux pa the other week. But you're
- 3:13Speaker 1: the one who started this conversation. Well, I know I
- 3:16Speaker 1: don't think that people would. I haven't looked up Brody's estimate.
- 3:19Speaker 1: That's it wants to add? Should we edit all this hour?
- 3:23Speaker 1: You think you want to keep it in there for
- 3:24Speaker 1: the selling? Keep it in there. I think you're you're
- 3:28Speaker 1: asking price is a little low. Oh that's a geez, Brody.
- 3:32Speaker 1: That is a really phenomenal deal. I mean that's a
- 3:36Speaker 1: buyer that's a buyer's market right there. You really Yeah,
- 3:41Speaker 1: that's really nice. I hope you don't have a broker,
- 3:43Speaker 1: because you just basically took over the broker's job. Well
- 3:47Speaker 1: that's all right, as long as it sells, she'll still
- 3:50Speaker 1: get her commission, right, Okay, Moving along. We have the
- 3:53Speaker 1: hog Farmer Kevin Harlanders, right, Kevin from First Light, Glad
- 3:57Speaker 1: to be here. Um, what's your hog business? Call? Is
- 4:00Speaker 1: their name? No Nameander Hogs? No, we don't really have
- 4:04Speaker 1: a name. How many did you do this year? We
- 4:05Speaker 1: did four? We're going to do like thirty next year. Though,
- 4:09Speaker 1: I've been telling people you were just going incremental. Now
- 4:12Speaker 1: we're gonna go big. Yeah, we're partnering with some folks
- 4:15Speaker 1: back there. It's gonna be doing next I think so, yeah,
- 4:17Speaker 1: bringing in partners. Oh yeah, we're getting serious. So then
- 4:21Speaker 1: you need a name and you need to brand its.
- 4:24Speaker 1: Yeah I can, Yeah, we can do that. I guess
- 4:26Speaker 1: we should brand it. Probably. I like this kind of
- 4:29Speaker 1: this like sort of under the table friends and family.
- 4:33Speaker 1: You know, we could do thirty, I think, yeah, it's
- 4:37Speaker 1: the table with selling me. It's not going to be
- 4:40Speaker 1: friends and family, you know. So it's it's sort of
- 4:43Speaker 1: like off sale, so to speak. If I was with
- 4:45Speaker 1: the U. S d A, I'd be looking up your
- 4:47Speaker 1: situation right now, man, Yeah, I probably would be too
- 4:51Speaker 1: very tasty hog. I've been really enjoying my half. Yeah,
- 4:54Speaker 1: you guys been need not a little bit. Yeah, but
- 4:56Speaker 1: it's like you gotta spread it out, man. Yeah. Yeah,
- 4:58Speaker 1: that's a treat, dude. It's a It's like because if
- 5:02Speaker 1: you eat a lot of like get lean gaming, you
- 5:05Speaker 1: get in one of the pork chops the first by
- 5:07Speaker 1: the first. But I was like, oh my god, is
- 5:09Speaker 1: that good? Exactly? We probably we mix it up. We
- 5:12Speaker 1: need a lot of elk at our house. Well, I've
- 5:14Speaker 1: been grinding, mind, I've been grinding my fat and whatnot
- 5:16Speaker 1: into my beer burger. That's kind of what the main
- 5:18Speaker 1: thing I wanted. Yeah, but then you know what, I
- 5:19Speaker 1: didn't do that. I haven't eaten any of it. I
- 5:21Speaker 1: just froze it. I froze it. Yeah, but we got
- 5:23Speaker 1: another pig. We gotta pig the fat, a little bit
- 5:26Speaker 1: of fat off a pick called beans the pig and beans.
- 5:29Speaker 1: You guys got beans, beans the hog. So I did
- 5:32Speaker 1: some burger with beans the hog. And I did some
- 5:34Speaker 1: burger with um what was the name of the one
- 5:37Speaker 1: I bought from you pork you don't, you don't, you
- 5:39Speaker 1: don't name? It was pork and beans. We had two
- 5:43Speaker 1: pigs named beans. Um so thirty I think so I
- 5:48Speaker 1: got that many friends? Oh yeah, oh yeah, plenty of
- 5:51Speaker 1: people in Eastern Oregon. Do you you know what the
- 5:53Speaker 1: question I can't want to ask each I didn't know
- 5:55Speaker 1: the answer to it is um Are you you know
- 5:58Speaker 1: how um trigger noses has been eliminated from? I mean,
- 6:03Speaker 1: you know, for all intensive purposes has been eliminated from
- 6:08Speaker 1: uh closed system pork? Are you how how cocky are
- 6:12Speaker 1: you about eating harlander hogs rare? Yeah? We eat them
- 6:16Speaker 1: probably medium rare. I'm pretty confident in that. Yeah. So
- 6:19Speaker 1: you don't feel that they've been eating all kind of
- 6:20Speaker 1: bear meat and rats, No, because they're they're been a
- 6:23Speaker 1: control of environment still, you know, they're pastures, but that
- 6:26Speaker 1: pastures clean for sure. And then they're getting that um
- 6:29Speaker 1: grain in the form of barley. Um. So's the stuff
- 6:33Speaker 1: that they're eating is is uh basically pasture grays like coggs,
- 6:38Speaker 1: and and then uh a little bit of barley. And
- 6:40Speaker 1: that's the barley that comes from making beer, right, Yeah,
- 6:43Speaker 1: same barley, but it's different. It's two roll barley, which
- 6:45Speaker 1: that's what they're making the beer. Um. And then there's
- 6:47Speaker 1: like different kinds of barley that's made for animal feed
- 6:50Speaker 1: and other kinds of things. To have I been lying
- 6:52Speaker 1: when I've been telling people that you were getting some
- 6:57Speaker 1: kind of byproduct of beer production. Yeah, that's true. I
- 7:01Speaker 1: wasn't lying. Yeah, yeah, and that's that's actually a nice filler.
- 7:06Speaker 1: And uh, it's good grain too, but it is a
- 7:08Speaker 1: different kind of barley between beer and stuff that they're
- 7:12Speaker 1: putting back into into feed. In my first book, I
- 7:15Speaker 1: wrote about a guy that um an old neighbor mine
- 7:20Speaker 1: in Miles City, Montana that used to fat and hogs
- 7:25Speaker 1: on horse meat. Yeah, And he said that they would
- 7:28Speaker 1: take the horses into the hog pen and shoot him,
- 7:31Speaker 1: and then he would do all the skinning cuts on
- 7:34Speaker 1: the horse and tie it, said, to a post, and
- 7:37Speaker 1: pull the hide with a tractor because you could sell
- 7:40Speaker 1: the hides for three or four bucks. And then he said,
- 7:43Speaker 1: a couple of days later, you need to go in
- 7:45Speaker 1: there and throw all the bones out of there, because
- 7:48Speaker 1: the hogs started to crush those bones and the gag
- 7:51Speaker 1: on the bone shards. And he said he never wanted
- 7:54Speaker 1: to send them to market with a belly fan the
- 7:57Speaker 1: belly full of horse flesh. Yeah, So he said he
- 8:00Speaker 1: would finish him on barley because he's always scared of
- 8:03Speaker 1: what they'd think if they opened them up and they
- 8:04Speaker 1: had meeting him and he said that their condition would
- 8:07Speaker 1: deteriorate on barley. He said their tail would lose. Some
- 8:11Speaker 1: of them had a real nice tight corkscrew, and he
- 8:13Speaker 1: said that corkscrew would start to loosen. And he said
- 8:17Speaker 1: the luster on their fur would start to fade when
- 8:20Speaker 1: you put him on barley. And that's how he knew though,
- 8:22Speaker 1: that was time to time to take him to market.
- 8:25Speaker 1: And this guy too would. He was telling me they
- 8:28Speaker 1: used to raise in the thirties. They would raise turkeys
- 8:30Speaker 1: and they would send they would raise turkeys for Thanksgiving
- 8:33Speaker 1: and all their turkeys would go to Minneapolis, and to
- 8:38Speaker 1: keep the turkeys from rotten, they'd send him in barrels.
- 8:41Speaker 1: And you didn't want to make any gutting cuts on
- 8:43Speaker 1: the turkey because you just it allows back to you
- 8:46Speaker 1: to get in there. They would before it came time
- 8:49Speaker 1: to slaughter them, they would stop feeding the turkeys for
- 8:53Speaker 1: a couple of days and just give them water because
- 8:57Speaker 1: they wanted their whole digestive system to flush. And then
- 9:00Speaker 1: you could kill him, pluck him and put him in
- 9:02Speaker 1: barrels and they wouldn't rock because no one had opened
- 9:05Speaker 1: up the gutting cavity. Yeah, he had a lot of
- 9:08Speaker 1: I told his story thousand times. But his they would
- 9:11Speaker 1: jack up a truck and use the and pull a
- 9:14Speaker 1: tire off and use it to drive a belt to cut.
- 9:17Speaker 1: I'll tell you what he happened. You know about his thought.
- 9:20Speaker 1: Didn't you tell it? Didn't you tell the story all
- 9:22Speaker 1: the time. Yeah, every week, Um cut his thumb off
- 9:26Speaker 1: and his brother flicked it into the hogpen. And yeah,
- 9:30Speaker 1: so he'd come over and he'd do stuff. But you
- 9:33Speaker 1: always have to instead of pinching it between his finger
- 9:35Speaker 1: and his thumb, he'd always pinched everything between his finger
- 9:38Speaker 1: and what would be like the meat at the base, Yeah, thumb.
- 9:41Speaker 1: But he could peel. He could peel sweetbreads like that.
- 9:44Speaker 1: That's crazy. Yeah, pinching it like that. Man, this is
- 9:48Speaker 1: working hand. He had a wife named Agnes n Um.
- 9:52Speaker 1: When he died, somehow my brother like inherited cases of
- 9:56Speaker 1: slim fast that were in his garage. My brothers walk
- 10:01Speaker 1: around sounds like whenever he went hunt and he just
- 10:03Speaker 1: fills backpack slimy. That's a good idea for next year.
- 10:12Speaker 1: Dead man A dead man slips. They were out we
- 10:20Speaker 1: were at hunting one time and our buddy Pooter was
- 10:22Speaker 1: there and Matt was drinking all the slim fast and
- 10:25Speaker 1: pos saying, man, you're gonna be nothing but skin and
- 10:28Speaker 1: bones you keep living on slim fasts. Maggie, Hello, Megan's
- 10:36Speaker 1: got a little mechanics suit on. I agree, I commented
- 10:43Speaker 1: so cute. Thank you? Anything else that doesn't take you
- 10:47Speaker 1: away from the fact that it's a mechanics I don't
- 10:50Speaker 1: know what to say about it. I just like it. Uh.
- 10:53Speaker 1: How did you find that mechanics suit? Um? From made Well? Yea,
- 10:59Speaker 1: I bought it new. Yeah, it's made well and Dickies
- 11:01Speaker 1: did a collapse so that women can have good looking
- 11:05Speaker 1: but like also, you know, durable clothing. So yeah, like that.
- 11:10Speaker 1: It's great. Thank you. I like it to Did you
- 11:12Speaker 1: have to pay full price for it? M No, I
- 11:14Speaker 1: got it on Black Friday. I've been stocking. They had
- 11:16Speaker 1: half a brain, had half brain? Did get ahold of you,
- 11:19Speaker 1: Maggie Smith? Uh, they'd get holding and send you a
- 11:22Speaker 1: stack of those suits. My own team, please do made Well. Yeah,
- 11:28Speaker 1: mag he's got a mechanic suit. Um, Phil, he just
- 11:33Speaker 1: he's you know, he's down here the switchboard. Wow, go on, Phil, Nothing.
- 11:41Speaker 1: I was just I thought you're commenting on my you
- 11:43Speaker 1: were disappointed by my shirt since it's not as you know,
- 11:48Speaker 1: Phillis looks like everybody else. No no zipping suits. Yeah,
- 11:55Speaker 1: um filled the engineer. Yeah, phil is gonna start skateboard
- 11:58Speaker 1: this year. So that haircut, I'm gonna say, it's getting
- 12:02Speaker 1: a little like punk rock like that. It gets like that.
- 12:07Speaker 1: Then he gets a haircut. I've got one schedule for Monday.
- 12:12Speaker 1: I want to see how far we could take that.
- 12:14Speaker 1: I don't mean this to be offensive, but it kind
- 12:16Speaker 1: of got that. Justin Bieber Young, Justin bub this is
- 12:21Speaker 1: my hair for all of high school. Yeah, oh man,
- 12:24Speaker 1: you must have been real popular. What's the ladies, because
- 12:31Speaker 1: the intros you take us a long. I just want
- 12:32Speaker 1: to interrupt the intro to say that what we're doing
- 12:34Speaker 1: is we have four No, no, you're gonna go hardcore.
- 12:36Speaker 1: I just want to tease. I want tea supposed to come. Um,
- 12:40Speaker 1: we have four brand new, brand new, successful first time
- 12:44Speaker 1: big game hunters, so we're here to talk about that
- 12:47Speaker 1: set of experiences. Go ahead. I actually was just gonna say, yes,
- 12:52Speaker 1: we should hurry up with the introductions, so I'll just
- 12:54Speaker 1: say good morning and pass. We have four newsy tidbits
- 12:58Speaker 1: to hit too. So um, Sam, Hi, I'm Sam. Give
- 13:04Speaker 1: a little more. Oh Um. I sit upstairs and production
- 13:07Speaker 1: in a corner. Pretty dark, but I love it up
- 13:12Speaker 1: there because people leave me alone. All right, good deal.
- 13:17Speaker 1: I'm Kylie. This is Kylie's first time on the show.
- 13:20Speaker 1: Sit next to Phil. Feel very feel very lucky to
- 13:24Speaker 1: be with Phil in that little corner there. Kyle, he's
- 13:27Speaker 1: one of our brand new um first time big game Hunters,
- 13:30Speaker 1: first time successful big game hunter. Yeah. And then like
- 13:34Speaker 1: a regular, Tracy, A regular, A regular Hunter. You've been
- 13:40Speaker 1: on the show. How many times? It's only my second
- 13:42Speaker 1: time on the show. Look into your mike better. Yeah. Well,
- 13:47Speaker 1: I'm glad I'm a regular, but it's only my second
- 13:48Speaker 1: time on the show. But now I guess I'm a
- 13:50Speaker 1: regular hunter too. Yep. And you've been on our You've
- 13:52Speaker 1: been on our television program. That is true. So if
- 13:55Speaker 1: you watched, if you go into our season eight on
- 13:57Speaker 1: Netflix and watch, I can't remember what it's called, Turkey,
- 14:00Speaker 1: Turkey trouble. The names of the shows always man and
- 14:06Speaker 1: there were a lot of troubles name. I'm never really
- 14:09Speaker 1: pleased with the names of the television programs. Great episode,
- 14:13Speaker 1: that great episode, horrible title. Uh. If you go look up,
- 14:17Speaker 1: you'll see both Maggie and Tracy, and Maggie has been
- 14:19Speaker 1: on the show this show a couple of times, dying
- 14:21Speaker 1: the television program. Okay, that's introduction. Now we got to
- 14:23Speaker 1: talk about a couple of things. Have you guys ever
- 14:25Speaker 1: heard My brother sent this to me this morning. If
- 14:29Speaker 1: you guys ever heard it's a German word file storch. That. No,
- 14:36Speaker 1: I'm not sure what I'm saying. Who here's harland or
- 14:38Speaker 1: that's not German? Oh? Yeah it is. What do you
- 14:41Speaker 1: think about that word? I don't know, don't don't speak German. Yeah,
- 14:46Speaker 1: but you're blowing the whole deal. What do you want
- 14:49Speaker 1: to do on pronunciation? File Storch? Yeah, I think that
- 14:51Speaker 1: p is definitely silent, right or creates the fun? Yes,
- 14:54Speaker 1: it's not yeah file storch. Um, my dad, you know
- 15:00Speaker 1: he I taught those four too, but he never His
- 15:02Speaker 1: distaste for the Germans never waned after fighting World War Two,
- 15:06Speaker 1: and um, he would when demonstrating how why he disliked
- 15:10Speaker 1: Germans so much. He learned how to say I love
- 15:12Speaker 1: you in a bunch of different languages and uh, and
- 15:16Speaker 1: he'd say it and you'd always put like a little
- 15:18Speaker 1: regional flare on all the different languages how you say
- 15:20Speaker 1: I love you. Then you'd get to to prove his
- 15:22Speaker 1: point about Germans, he would get to how they like
- 15:24Speaker 1: to say it, which is he'd be like alb, he goes,
- 15:28Speaker 1: even I love you sounds horrible. To be fair, I
- 15:33Speaker 1: am half Polish. Yeah, he likes He thought you guys
- 15:35Speaker 1: drank too much and liked a Kodians too much. So
- 15:40Speaker 1: a file so a file stora is a thing called
- 15:42Speaker 1: the arrow stork. This is like I was throwing there
- 15:45Speaker 1: real quick. I think that the h on the end.
- 15:48Speaker 1: I haven't even looked at it. Him guessing there's h
- 15:49Speaker 1: on the end. I'm guessing it's gonna be a sound
- 15:53Speaker 1: file store. Yeah, okay, that's good because it translates to
- 15:57Speaker 1: arrow stork. And my brother sent us to me. I'm like,
- 16:00Speaker 1: that can't be true. But then we had a big
- 16:01Speaker 1: back and forth and he proved out the veracity of it.
- 16:05Speaker 1: There's a thing called an arrow stork, and it's a
- 16:09Speaker 1: name given. It's a name in Germany given to storks
- 16:14Speaker 1: that were injured by arrows in Africa. And when before
- 16:20Speaker 1: people understood migrations, there was all these theories about where
- 16:24Speaker 1: this species of stork went m and people had ideas
- 16:29Speaker 1: that it went and lived in the water that went
- 16:31Speaker 1: to the bottom of the ocean. Where where it went.
- 16:33Speaker 1: But over the years, twenty five of these storks were
- 16:37Speaker 1: found alive carrying arrows from African hunters. Wow. And there's
- 16:44Speaker 1: a picture on Wikipedia which is doing a very aggressive
- 16:47Speaker 1: fundraiser right now p F p F E I L
- 16:52Speaker 1: S T O R c H. And you'll see a, uh,
- 16:56Speaker 1: it's sitting, the specimen is sitting. It was found in
- 17:01Speaker 1: and it's mounted somewhere that got it on explay. But
- 17:04Speaker 1: it's sitting there and it's like a it's mounted, but
- 17:07Speaker 1: it's a bird carrying around this crazy arrow stuck in
- 17:10Speaker 1: his neck. And over the years twenty five of these
- 17:13Speaker 1: turned up and it started to help explain migrations. Isn't
- 17:15Speaker 1: it wild enough of them to have their own name? There?
- 17:20Speaker 1: It is right there? You did you to know, Oh
- 17:25Speaker 1: it's a Central Africa? Yeah, wow, twenty five of them
- 17:32Speaker 1: and that one you can tell the dude was the
- 17:34Speaker 1: dude was shooting at it flying overhead because the arrow
- 17:37Speaker 1: like enters, you know, kind of like enters. It's basically
- 17:42Speaker 1: enters its throat and emerges, you know what kind of
- 17:46Speaker 1: blow its chin or at the base of its head.
- 17:49Speaker 1: But you're assuming that the taxidermists put it back together
- 17:54Speaker 1: the exact Well, no, I'm not assuming that. In fact,
- 17:57Speaker 1: you know, I don't think that that bird was standing
- 17:59Speaker 1: on the ground when I got an arrow like that.
- 18:01Speaker 1: Oh yeah, feeding, I'm just saying that the arrow could
- 18:09Speaker 1: be upside down when it was you know, from the
- 18:11Speaker 1: way it was found, we don't know put it in there,
- 18:18Speaker 1: took the arrow out, forgot how it was in there,
- 18:19Speaker 1: and put it back in the wrong way. What year
- 18:24Speaker 1: do you think this happened? Okay, okay, So the bird
- 18:29Speaker 1: was found or killed somehow and it had this arrow
- 18:32Speaker 1: in it, then it had to travel and make it
- 18:34Speaker 1: to a taxidermist. Right he wasn't the guy. That happened
- 18:38Speaker 1: just happened. Me standing there and the thing falls out
- 18:39Speaker 1: of the sky and he's like, oh my god, look
- 18:41Speaker 1: at this. Right. So I'm just saying that some things
- 18:43Speaker 1: could have happened in travel transport where he got this thing.
- 18:47Speaker 1: And they're like, yeah, we found this bird had an
- 18:50Speaker 1: arrow stuck in its neck. Can you taxidermy it for us?
- 18:53Speaker 1: So you think that the archer was in a hot
- 18:56Speaker 1: air balloon and shot it like the angle could you know,
- 19:01Speaker 1: could have been different. I agree with you that the
- 19:05Speaker 1: bird could have been with his neck down eating. I
- 19:08Speaker 1: mean it would have been. It'd be nice if we
- 19:10Speaker 1: could have seen all and see where all those arrows
- 19:13Speaker 1: were in those birds. Would be interesting. See when we retire,
- 19:16Speaker 1: maybe we make that. You know, Larry Todd had that
- 19:19Speaker 1: whole retirement, the thing you did up in the mountains.
- 19:23Speaker 1: The anthropologist. Yes, yeah, well maybe this will be like
- 19:28Speaker 1: when we retire, we'll pick this up. The file stork,
- 19:33Speaker 1: the file storre um. Another quick thing, bro, do you
- 19:38Speaker 1: go with your quick thing? Oh? I know, I'll hit
- 19:41Speaker 1: another one real quick. They just found to this is
- 19:44Speaker 1: some creepy This is great. In Ecuador, they unearthed two
- 19:50Speaker 1: infants that were buried more than two thousand years ago,
- 19:54Speaker 1: wearing helmets made from the skulls of older children. Oh
- 20:02Speaker 1: and the way the bones were held together. They feeled
- 20:04Speaker 1: it this flesh that the skin and flesh on the
- 20:09Speaker 1: older children's head was still intact when they made the
- 20:14Speaker 1: helmets for the young kids. That's some Cormette McCarthy ship
- 20:19Speaker 1: right there. Oh, Yeah, that's so far up my alley,
- 20:23Speaker 1: I can feel it tickling my tonsils. Any conclusion to
- 20:26Speaker 1: why they did that, Like, no one. Nothing I read
- 20:31Speaker 1: was taking a stab at it. And like we we
- 20:33Speaker 1: always joke, like everything in anthropology, you see something weird,
- 20:35Speaker 1: like most been ceremonials, but on this I would be like,
- 20:38Speaker 1: that has to have been some Yeah, yeah, that's very bizarre. Dude,
- 20:44Speaker 1: that's hardcore. Unless the kids were skateboarders. They're very near
- 20:49Speaker 1: a half pipe. Uh you go, Brodie, you want me
- 20:55Speaker 1: to talk about the Yeah, yeah, the asshole. Yes, I'm
- 21:03Speaker 1: not even called him a gentleman um but a uh
- 21:08Speaker 1: and yeah, he can't call him a hunter either, apparently
- 21:10Speaker 1: he uh he's this guy shot yeah, shot a giant
- 21:14Speaker 1: bear black bear in Minnesota. Uh add a garbage jump
- 21:19Speaker 1: on and Indian reservation that he trespassed to get into.
- 21:25Speaker 1: Um and then of course went on to to brag
- 21:29Speaker 1: about his kills. A seven hundred pound bear cut its
- 21:32Speaker 1: head off, didn't take all the meat like this guy
- 21:35Speaker 1: put the paws off. Put on Instagram that I got
- 21:38Speaker 1: it done last got it done last night. Absolute giant
- 21:41Speaker 1: over seven hundred pounds. So he's like obviously posing himself
- 21:45Speaker 1: as a hunter. He wants people to think he's a hunter,
- 21:48Speaker 1: but he's got a long list I mean dudes like
- 21:50Speaker 1: a career poacher. Yeah, career poacher and career criminal outside
- 21:54Speaker 1: of poaching. Um, so how is he allowed to I mean,
- 21:58Speaker 1: that's that's the stird like he got in trouble. Is
- 22:00Speaker 1: a felon because he's bow hunt not at all, I
- 22:02Speaker 1: mean hardly but quiet. He's a felon. So one time
- 22:08Speaker 1: he got introlled for having a gun because he's not
- 22:11Speaker 1: supposed to have a gun. And then he gets caught
- 22:13Speaker 1: with a gun and it's his girlfriends ex boyfriend's gun.
- 22:18Speaker 1: And that's kind of the most interesting character to emerge
- 22:21Speaker 1: out of this article. The girlfriend's ex boyfriends. Yeah, that's like, yeah,
- 22:29Speaker 1: I'll tell about why I think he's the most interesting
- 22:31Speaker 1: character to emerge out of the article is like I
- 22:33Speaker 1: can see if you had a you and your girlfriend
- 22:35Speaker 1: breakup that like whatever, you left some books, some underwear?
- 22:39Speaker 1: How over there? You leave your six over there and
- 22:44Speaker 1: never go get it. Maybe she wouldn't let him come
- 22:47Speaker 1: get it. Maybe she's took it from him. Why was
- 22:49Speaker 1: it that her house? Who knows you got a thing
- 22:53Speaker 1: that the people, these characters that we're talking about, right,
- 22:56Speaker 1: like the circles that they run in that uh they
- 23:01Speaker 1: got maybe he just forgot all about his thirty at
- 23:03Speaker 1: six Like that could be as plausible as anything. Yeah. Yeah,
- 23:14Speaker 1: So go on about this guy, well, I mean, like
- 23:17Speaker 1: we said, he's just done everything wrong. And uh, the
- 23:21Speaker 1: thing that strikes me about this kind of article when
- 23:24Speaker 1: they pop up as you always see it like Hunter,
- 23:28Speaker 1: Like they they call the guy a hunter, and they
- 23:31Speaker 1: shouldn't be calling the guy hunter, right, It's they should
- 23:34Speaker 1: be calling him a criminal or a poacher. Yeah whatever. Yeah,
- 23:38Speaker 1: that's the thing I don't look about is be like
- 23:40Speaker 1: Hunter and be like oh, those hunters. But then you
- 23:42Speaker 1: look like who did the enforcement on the investigation and
- 23:45Speaker 1: get in trouble. He's getting in trouble, like he's in
- 23:47Speaker 1: violation of game laws. Yeah, a couple federal the federal charges.
- 23:52Speaker 1: I don't think we're even involved with the the actual
- 23:55Speaker 1: hunting part of it. That'll be taken care of later. Um,
- 23:58Speaker 1: what did he get charged with? Yeah, okay, he transported
- 24:03Speaker 1: wildlife and violation of tribal law and he trespassed on
- 24:07Speaker 1: Indian land hunt. So those are the federal charges. State
- 24:10Speaker 1: charges will come later. It's amazing the way people a
- 24:13Speaker 1: lot so many poachers, um can't they still have to
- 24:18Speaker 1: go on to social media. They can't help themselves. It's
- 24:21Speaker 1: like the whole thing is Yeah, I agree. I feel
- 24:24Speaker 1: like it's part of the intention or the motivation down
- 24:30Speaker 1: in Kentucky, Like why all of this right, because they
- 24:34Speaker 1: were talking about like rings and families of you know, poachers,
- 24:38Speaker 1: poacher gangs, and it's like so I'm thinking, like, well,
- 24:40Speaker 1: there must be like money involved, right, that's why you
- 24:43Speaker 1: would do all this and risk getting in trouble and
- 24:45Speaker 1: lose you're hunting rights because like in the end you're
- 24:47Speaker 1: selling a trophy head fort. No, it's pure back bragging rights. Yeah,
- 24:53Speaker 1: but you'd think words would have gotten out by now
- 24:56Speaker 1: that that's how you're going to get caught, you know,
- 24:58Speaker 1: like like that's just comes yeah anyway, again, the types
- 25:07Speaker 1: of people that we're talking about here, Yeah, no, I know.
- 25:10Speaker 1: But so how do you resolve that situation? Somebody who
- 25:13Speaker 1: has a track record like that, who continues to have
- 25:16Speaker 1: the same thing happened over and over and over again,
- 25:19Speaker 1: how do you resolve that? I would say, punish him harder,
- 25:23Speaker 1: because you know, a lot of these these people just
- 25:26Speaker 1: aren't getting the book thrown out right. I'd send him
- 25:29Speaker 1: out to Harlander Hoggs slop and slop some some hogs
- 25:34Speaker 1: stables for a while, work every time. Yeah, I got it.
- 25:41Speaker 1: I was at a game warden conference one time and
- 25:47Speaker 1: I was talking to a warden who was there to
- 25:49Speaker 1: present on He was there to present on a theory
- 25:54Speaker 1: he had about what he was calling like super violators
- 25:58Speaker 1: where he feels that scent of poaching UM is being
- 26:04Speaker 1: done by ten percent of poachers. And he had a
- 26:08Speaker 1: he had this he was presenting this kind of like
- 26:10Speaker 1: composite view of this composite view of UM, the most
- 26:16Speaker 1: rampant poachers and they're there, you know, obviously like it's
- 26:21Speaker 1: like white males, I can't remember the age bracket, kind
- 26:27Speaker 1: of like what their worldview is, what their political view is.
- 26:31Speaker 1: And he feels and he was talking about that there's
- 26:34Speaker 1: sociopathy and sociopathy and people who are like particularly sociopathic
- 26:40Speaker 1: UM it manifests in certain ways. And he was saying
- 26:43Speaker 1: with the super poachers that they don't brag about it.
- 26:46Speaker 1: These are guys where you catch them and then you
- 26:49Speaker 1: go to their house and they have like a pole
- 26:51Speaker 1: barn that has you know, eight dear acts laying in
- 26:57Speaker 1: in disarray, and it's this kind of like in the
- 26:59Speaker 1: way he described I'm just like, they're sticking it to
- 27:01Speaker 1: the They're they're sticking it to the man, They're sticking
- 27:05Speaker 1: it to society. These are things that people value. I
- 27:08Speaker 1: have all them. And I'm sure there's a part of
- 27:11Speaker 1: it that's especially with an instance like that where they're
- 27:14Speaker 1: doing it in a repeated manner and not getting caught.
- 27:17Speaker 1: That's got to play into the obsession in some way. Yeah,
- 27:20Speaker 1: that he was saying that. His argument was that if
- 27:22Speaker 1: you really to be really impactful on poaching, it would
- 27:26Speaker 1: be working hard to identify these and he talked He
- 27:29Speaker 1: talked about like these areas where you have the same
- 27:32Speaker 1: way you hear like people figuring out there's a serial killer,
- 27:34Speaker 1: where you have these clusters of crimes that seems similar,
- 27:38Speaker 1: and then at some point someone will look and be like,
- 27:41Speaker 1: why are there six unsolved murders kind of around particular
- 27:46Speaker 1: train station over the course of ten years, and they're
- 27:49Speaker 1: all have a thing. And so what he was working
- 27:52Speaker 1: I was looking at these places where there is like
- 27:54Speaker 1: this area where for twenty years there's like headless deer
- 27:57Speaker 1: and ditches, you know, and then and then realizing that
- 28:02Speaker 1: thing starts to make sense. The heads are all cut
- 28:05Speaker 1: off the same way. Right, It's typically happening around whatever
- 28:09Speaker 1: circumstances and that, and like I said, he was there,
- 28:12Speaker 1: he was presenting this whole deals interesting, really interesting. Uh,
- 28:17Speaker 1: I'm gonna say. My other thing has to do with
- 28:19Speaker 1: the guy cutting his finger off and then keeping it
- 28:23Speaker 1: in the jar a room. Could I save that now?
- 28:27Speaker 1: Kind of just told it didn't. The guy rode in
- 28:31Speaker 1: and his body they're messing around the airplanes landing gear
- 28:34Speaker 1: and his and his finger come off. How he just
- 28:38Speaker 1: got caught off by the landing gear. Um, and he
- 28:43Speaker 1: keeps it in rum and now and then people come over,
- 28:45Speaker 1: they'll get the drinking and they'll like to have a
- 28:47Speaker 1: little shot of rum out of that jar. Do they
- 28:52Speaker 1: know that they're having or? He says sometimes they're unsuspecting. Um.
- 28:59Speaker 1: Did he say which anger? Uh? No, he just says
- 29:02Speaker 1: a finger says there's a violent mishap with airplane landing gear.
- 29:07Speaker 1: He wanted to get it reattached. They couldn't do it.
- 29:10Speaker 1: He says. The moral of the story is, Um, if
- 29:14Speaker 1: you lose your finger, hang onto it. They made great
- 29:18Speaker 1: conversation starters. Makes a nice cocktail. Cocktail, Okay, okay, I'm
- 29:27Speaker 1: talking so people. A lot of times, people right in
- 29:29Speaker 1: they want hot hunting tips, the hottes hunting tips to
- 29:32Speaker 1: work here, right because you guys all got a job here,
- 29:35Speaker 1: and everybody's that's what everybody comments on social media. It's
- 29:39Speaker 1: already a demand and the larger army eat our community.
- 29:43Speaker 1: You guys got your first gear, and didn't Maggie, Maggie,
- 29:45Speaker 1: you and Tracy got your first year the same night.
- 29:47Speaker 1: I think so, which I think is still ironic considering
- 29:51Speaker 1: we went on our first turkey hunt together and then
- 29:54Speaker 1: what day? So I want to go and order who
- 29:56Speaker 1: got their dear first? Sam, did you get yours first? No?
- 30:00Speaker 1: I got my? No? Third? Yeah, because I got mine
- 30:04Speaker 1: the tuesday after they got theirs. I think that Maggie
- 30:07Speaker 1: got hers earlier in the day. She did. Yeah, that's correct,
- 30:11Speaker 1: because we had already gotten the photo of Maggie's and
- 30:15Speaker 1: Steve's response was, will let me send back a picture
- 30:18Speaker 1: of yours? Don't want? Did not like the idea of that.
- 30:23Speaker 1: Perhaps the thought could be that we were on success.
- 30:26Speaker 1: I didn't even know Joe was doing this. Joe was
- 30:28Speaker 1: more excited about sharing the he was just sending it
- 30:31Speaker 1: to everybody. I talked with Joe about this last night
- 30:35Speaker 1: and he um, he expressed it that he was wondering,
- 30:41Speaker 1: what was you know, like when someone's not shooting. Yes,
- 30:46Speaker 1: he kept he was like he's telling the story. Was
- 30:50Speaker 1: kind of like where he was wondering, like, what's the
- 30:52Speaker 1: what exactly is the problem? You want me to go
- 30:56Speaker 1: into that? Yeah? I mean first retouched, we talked about
- 31:00Speaker 1: the turkey, but it gives people a quick crash course
- 31:02Speaker 1: and you're like, how you became interested in getting a deer? Um, well,
- 31:09Speaker 1: obviously not getting a turkey. And then I was on
- 31:11Speaker 1: the podcast with you guys like a recap and you're
- 31:15Speaker 1: kind of gave me a little bit of yeah. Um,
- 31:19Speaker 1: but no, Joe approached me and asked if I had
- 31:21Speaker 1: an interests and I did have interest I mean why not?
- 31:25Speaker 1: And uh so I decided to go. I don't know,
- 31:28Speaker 1: there's not really a backstory too. Kind of talking about
- 31:30Speaker 1: Joe Frigno Joe Ferronado, do you feel that he wanted
- 31:34Speaker 1: to take you because he had filled his tag and
- 31:35Speaker 1: wasn't done hunting yet maybe No. No, did his fiance
- 31:43Speaker 1: get a deer? Yes, she had filled her So Joe
- 31:46Speaker 1: was like he just he's like, I gotta find someone.
- 31:50Speaker 1: I need a warm I need a warm body of
- 31:52Speaker 1: the deer tag. No, Joe was actually out there hunting too.
- 31:56Speaker 1: We're going to stay another night, he was, yeah, yeah,
- 32:00Speaker 1: he was still honey, but we'd ended up not saying
- 32:02Speaker 1: another night. The conditions were just horrible, horrible out there.
- 32:05Speaker 1: Oh you know what, it's cured, Kevin. Did you did
- 32:07Speaker 1: your Yeah? You had a first time hunter this year? Yeah,
- 32:11Speaker 1: I did. Yep. My girlfriend Cilia killed her first buck
- 32:14Speaker 1: with the bows. Yeah, first animal ever. Wow, that's pretty awesome.
- 32:24Speaker 1: So why isn't she here? Yeah a man, Yeah, I
- 32:29Speaker 1: don't even think about that. And that was shed brought
- 32:31Speaker 1: her on. But yeah, she she had a great hunt too.
- 32:34Speaker 1: That was fun. We did that back in eastern Oregon.
- 32:35Speaker 1: She practiced for well over a year with a bow
- 32:39Speaker 1: an arrow, and uh got it done on the like
- 32:42Speaker 1: the final hour. Got it done on the final final hour,
- 32:45Speaker 1: the eleventh hour. Nice. You you kind of hunted your
- 32:51Speaker 1: ass off this year, Yeah, a little bit. I took
- 32:54Speaker 1: some time, for sure. We we got actually, let's see
- 32:57Speaker 1: we got three elk in our office. I think two
- 33:00Speaker 1: big horns. Yeah, we got two big horns dot doll
- 33:03Speaker 1: sheet what else. Yeah, we had a good year in
- 33:05Speaker 1: the office for sure. But yeah, I got some time
- 33:07Speaker 1: out there. We just got off a white tail tour
- 33:10Speaker 1: um with a few folks, which is pretty cool. Yeah,
- 33:12Speaker 1: two dudes that work at first like drew big horn
- 33:14Speaker 1: tags sitting next to each other, no less in the
- 33:17Speaker 1: look at that, and they're hunting like pretty sitting next
- 33:23Speaker 1: to each other. That really puts into perspective for me. Yeah. Yeah,
- 33:26Speaker 1: we never hear the end of it. Yeah, these guys
- 33:29Speaker 1: haven't either, and they both filled them to which is
- 33:30Speaker 1: pretty The hunt that Paul and Nate both went on
- 33:32Speaker 1: was incredibly different. That's not like a gimme. It's in
- 33:35Speaker 1: the frank Church and it was the real deal. So yeah,
- 33:40Speaker 1: that's pretty exciting. And then Bridget at first like dolls.
- 33:44Speaker 1: She shot a doll sheep up in the Northwest Territories
- 33:47Speaker 1: and uh, we're still rolling ross Are our VP of
- 33:51Speaker 1: sales and Marketing has a elk tag still to fill
- 33:53Speaker 1: with a muzzloader. So we're going out Sunday. Yeah, Yeah,
- 33:56Speaker 1: it's gonna be difficult. Though we had a lot of
- 33:58Speaker 1: snow that was as elk are still pretty high. So
- 34:01Speaker 1: you guys do any work over there? Ever, No, try
- 34:04Speaker 1: not to, try not to. Yeah, weeah, we had a
- 34:08Speaker 1: good year, so there's a lot of a lot of
- 34:10Speaker 1: success in office for sure. Did um does your girlfriend
- 34:13Speaker 1: like eating that deer? Yeah? Yeah, we caught it in
- 34:15Speaker 1: with the with the Harlander hog. Yeah, we actually did um.
- 34:18Speaker 1: A friend of ours made this stuff called land Yeager.
- 34:20Speaker 1: You never heard of that. It's like a pressed sausage,
- 34:24Speaker 1: but they sang land Hunter. Yeah. Yeah, so I guess
- 34:27Speaker 1: it's like this old German um sort of processed sausage
- 34:32Speaker 1: that they pressed and then smoke and eat it like jerky.
- 34:35Speaker 1: That's really good. And we did that with something there. Yeah.
- 34:37Speaker 1: I don't imagine you've ever heard of Yeager moister? Have
- 34:40Speaker 1: I've heard a bit? I'm not a fan. That means
- 34:44Speaker 1: hunt master. It does which they made it should have
- 34:46Speaker 1: made it taste, you know, No, like yeagers just meant
- 34:52Speaker 1: for kids to drink. But when you're drink it, you
- 34:54Speaker 1: don't feel like you're drinking the kids drink. No, it's gross.
- 34:58Speaker 1: I don't think growing up drink yeager. Oh definitely, I
- 35:01Speaker 1: have been at the Murray and placed that in Livingston
- 35:04Speaker 1: where people at like three pm, grown adults are ordering
- 35:07Speaker 1: yeager shot like for kids. No, absolutely not. It's like
- 35:10Speaker 1: when you want to hit it hard, feel that bird
- 35:14Speaker 1: that goes down when we want to hit it hard.
- 35:17Speaker 1: Like if you went to the bar and you felt
- 35:18Speaker 1: like you had to catch up with everybody because they
- 35:20Speaker 1: were already kind of wasted. Yeah, we'd order a long
- 35:24Speaker 1: island ice teams. Hold on a minute, I'll be more
- 35:31Speaker 1: fun about five seconds. Okay, Maggie said, there you were.
- 35:40Speaker 1: You were shamed turkey young. Yes, and you got to
- 35:42Speaker 1: invite from Joe Ferronado. He's been on he's has had
- 35:46Speaker 1: a little quick cameos here. Yeah, and I was excited
- 35:49Speaker 1: to go out with Joe and his fiance. It was
- 35:50Speaker 1: fun to have a woman out there with me. Why why,
- 35:53Speaker 1: who cares? I don't know. Just like the conversation. She
- 35:56Speaker 1: made me comfortable. It was just like you guys take
- 35:58Speaker 1: about different stuff than what we talk about. Yeah, totally.
- 36:02Speaker 1: I think she wouldn't be like, so you got a
- 36:04Speaker 1: mechanic suit? Yeah? Yeah, yeah. I think Joe kind of
- 36:12Speaker 1: zoned out half the time because her and I are
- 36:13Speaker 1: just and then he'd be like, I'm trying to sneak
- 36:18Speaker 1: up on this deer. Yeah no, but we spotted the
- 36:21Speaker 1: deer at like nine thirty in the morning, and by
- 36:24Speaker 1: eleven thirty he was on the ground. So in the morning, yeah,
- 36:29Speaker 1: we'll tell me. I didn't a little more. Now I
- 36:32Speaker 1: feel like we should teach Maggie how to um tell
- 36:36Speaker 1: a story. I'm trying to take a I mean not
- 36:39Speaker 1: that I like how you're doing it, but I'm trying
- 36:41Speaker 1: to think out how, like what would have that conversations
- 36:48Speaker 1: you got her? I was, did you got him? I did? Wait,
- 36:52Speaker 1: we're getting way, Okay, go ahead, you pursue your line
- 36:55Speaker 1: of questioning. I just want it was you know, your
- 36:57Speaker 1: first time doing that. I told Joe like from the
- 37:01Speaker 1: very beginning, like, I think there's a lot of things
- 37:03Speaker 1: you can't control going into hunt. I've learned that from
- 37:05Speaker 1: the Turkey situation, but from your experience and then my
- 37:09Speaker 1: personal experience, and there's little you can control. But communication
- 37:12Speaker 1: was one thing that Joe was like, this is something
- 37:15Speaker 1: that we can't control and have dialed and that made
- 37:17Speaker 1: me feel very comfortable. We were like, I don't know,
- 37:20Speaker 1: like we talked a lot about like my feelings going
- 37:22Speaker 1: into it and like wanting to be an ethical with
- 37:25Speaker 1: how I went about things. And I don't know, it
- 37:27Speaker 1: was just very open dialogue and that made me feel
- 37:30Speaker 1: very comfortable going into the situation. I think that's a
- 37:33Speaker 1: really interesting and good point. And also I think you
- 37:36Speaker 1: guys had good dialogue at every step, every step turning
- 37:39Speaker 1: around and being like are you comfortable right now? Is
- 37:41Speaker 1: this okay? Like you know? And I was like, yeah,
- 37:44Speaker 1: it sounds a little different than use the word communication.
- 37:51Speaker 1: Not necessarily now I'm using that word, but like, can
- 37:55Speaker 1: you talk about your communication? Don't listen, let's say, let's
- 38:01Speaker 1: sell was getting myself into time, But to me that
- 38:06Speaker 1: was important. I don't know how that opened dialect. I
- 38:08Speaker 1: don't know. Joe. Joe wasn't like you guys are camped out, Yeah,
- 38:11Speaker 1: and when you went up to to find what were
- 38:15Speaker 1: you doing when you when you found the deer? What
- 38:18Speaker 1: was I doing? What do you mean? How did I
- 38:20Speaker 1: react when I go ahead? Like when you first spotted Yeah,
- 38:26Speaker 1: like what was going on? Like you guys just walking
- 38:29Speaker 1: and someone look at that. We were just walking And
- 38:31Speaker 1: Joe has showing me how to not like when you
- 38:33Speaker 1: come up to like a little like crest in a ridge.
- 38:35Speaker 1: How you don't want to like silhouette yourself. And he
- 38:39Speaker 1: was like, Joe just went up a couple of notches
- 38:41Speaker 1: in my book. Yeah, he was demonstrating that. And as
- 38:44Speaker 1: he was demonstrating it, he was like, oh my god,
- 38:45Speaker 1: there's a big buck right there. And then it was
- 38:49Speaker 1: perfect and were block management National forest blm um. We
- 38:55Speaker 1: did a little bit of block management, but then we
- 38:57Speaker 1: got we were in the breaks. So then him yeah, okay,
- 39:01Speaker 1: so go on. Um. So then he spotted him and
- 39:03Speaker 1: started tracking way off, yeah, tracking him? Well, like, how
- 39:07Speaker 1: how far off? How far away yards from us? Can
- 39:11Speaker 1: you tracked him? Whiting just because you know where he is?
- 39:13Speaker 1: Why do you have to track them, like get in
- 39:16Speaker 1: a better position? I don't know. Was he following a lady?
- 39:18Speaker 1: He was following the lady he was with. He was
- 39:20Speaker 1: moving there crazy, but you weren't tracking them. The term
- 39:24Speaker 1: is stalking him. Okay, excuse me, I'm mostly if you.
- 39:33Speaker 1: If I learned that you guys spotted one and then
- 39:35Speaker 1: it got away and then you tracked it down, that's
- 39:39Speaker 1: interesting to me. Well, yes, so then we started a
- 39:42Speaker 1: stock We ended up spooking them somehow they took off
- 39:45Speaker 1: and just ran and then we ended up tracking them
- 39:48Speaker 1: because Joe could see him bed down, way way, way
- 39:51Speaker 1: off in the distance. That's not tracking. But then we
- 39:54Speaker 1: stopped him again. Okay, what is tracking? Tracking would be
- 39:59Speaker 1: that you are um. Tracking would be that you are
- 40:03Speaker 1: looking for signs on the ground with prints whatever, palmarks
- 40:09Speaker 1: in the snow. But when you see them, you're stocking. Yeah, yeah,
- 40:12Speaker 1: you wouldn't be. You could be like attracted with my eyes,
- 40:15Speaker 1: but no one would say that. Okay, well then we
- 40:18Speaker 1: saw him bed down and then we so he spooked
- 40:20Speaker 1: and went in bed down like a million miles away.
- 40:23Speaker 1: What was your goal as far as the range you
- 40:26Speaker 1: wanted to get into? Um? We practiced UM at two
- 40:29Speaker 1: hundred yards, but I was like, if we could be closer, Yeah,
- 40:33Speaker 1: I would like to be closer. And you practice shooting
- 40:36Speaker 1: off of off your pack or practice sitting over your knee. Yeah,
- 40:42Speaker 1: you did a lot of that, Yeah, but that was
- 40:43Speaker 1: not how the shot went down ended up being prone.
- 40:46Speaker 1: So that was but you were prepared to take a
- 40:49Speaker 1: two yards shot off your knee probably, I mean we
- 40:52Speaker 1: had practiced that, but this is the second time I
- 40:55Speaker 1: had held a rifle so I was a little nervous
- 40:58Speaker 1: about that, as like we need to be closer. I
- 41:00Speaker 1: can lay down, I'd feel better about that position. Do
- 41:02Speaker 1: you like Joe or jan It's better. Wait, let's put
- 41:06Speaker 1: that on the board. You don't have to answer that.
- 41:11Speaker 1: Just two totally different situations. So it beds way down
- 41:17Speaker 1: and then you guys started creeping in on what we
- 41:19Speaker 1: saw a little forky and Joe goes, do you want
- 41:22Speaker 1: that little guy? And I was like no, You at
- 41:26Speaker 1: that point was like this is for me. This would
- 41:29Speaker 1: be a big deer. And I was like, well then
- 41:30Speaker 1: I want Yeah. So so then what happened? You guys?
- 41:37Speaker 1: How long to take to creep in on it? Like
- 41:40Speaker 1: maybe forty minutes to creep in? And then he was
- 41:43Speaker 1: bedded down and he was doing one of those like
- 41:44Speaker 1: he's so tired sleeping things where he was like sleeping
- 41:47Speaker 1: in and he jerk away out. Yeah. It was warm
- 41:51Speaker 1: out and then it was really windy where we were,
- 41:53Speaker 1: but he's kind of in this little like, yeah, I
- 41:55Speaker 1: got out of the wind, bedded down. He was sleeping.
- 41:58Speaker 1: He was sleeping so hard. Joe was like he's huge.
- 42:01Speaker 1: Joe's like seven are almost six seven? Yeah? I would
- 42:05Speaker 1: stay around there, yeah, and he would just he was
- 42:11Speaker 1: just like so impatient. So he's like moving around, like
- 42:14Speaker 1: standing up, sitting, and he's like, I just want to
- 42:16Speaker 1: get in a better spot. And the deer did not care.
- 42:19Speaker 1: It was aware of you. I don't think so, but
- 42:22Speaker 1: like could see us, I mean, and if he was awake,
- 42:25Speaker 1: I mean I could totally have seen. Yeah, But Joe
- 42:29Speaker 1: was just like so impatient moving around, and I was like,
- 42:32Speaker 1: You're gonna spook him or something. I was like nervous
- 42:34Speaker 1: about that. Did Joe maybe wanted to stand up? No,
- 42:37Speaker 1: he was trying to get in a better position for
- 42:38Speaker 1: me to see. And we kept creeping in. We got
- 42:40Speaker 1: into eighty four yards, so we got in really really close. Um,
- 42:45Speaker 1: and then I moved and the deer stood up. Joe
- 42:48Speaker 1: was like, you spooked him. I could do whatever I
- 42:51Speaker 1: wanted to. I wouldn't say it looked like that, ye know, yeah,
- 43:04Speaker 1: And then he stood up and Joe was like, this
- 43:05Speaker 1: is this is it, It's gonna happen. And he stood
- 43:08Speaker 1: up and I looked at each other through the scope
- 43:11Speaker 1: and Joe leaned in. It was like, if you're going
- 43:13Speaker 1: to shoot, shoot now the shooting time, Yes, so you
- 43:21Speaker 1: were like, actually, like you dialed up your scope and
- 43:23Speaker 1: then it had a little eye contact with you walk
- 43:26Speaker 1: through the scope. That was like a very like reckoning moment.
- 43:31Speaker 1: Do you purposely do that? And it just happened that
- 43:34Speaker 1: your scope landed and you're pointing out his head and
- 43:36Speaker 1: now I knew where he was when he was sleeping,
- 43:39Speaker 1: you know. So like when he stood up, I was
- 43:41Speaker 1: felt very prepared as opposed like turkey hunting, where it
- 43:44Speaker 1: was such a surprise. I felt like it was like
- 43:46Speaker 1: not like the turkey doesn't bed down and then stand up,
- 43:49Speaker 1: Like this was a very different scenario. I got to
- 43:52Speaker 1: get very comfortable and feel very comfortable. So yeah, it's
- 43:57Speaker 1: nice when you get time. Yeah, we had like and
- 43:59Speaker 1: I think we sat on him for like an hour
- 44:01Speaker 1: maybe a little longer while he was sleeping. Yes, then
- 44:05Speaker 1: what happened? Um, then we walked over. Did he just
- 44:09Speaker 1: keel over? Yeah? He went down immediately. You got a
- 44:11Speaker 1: good hit on him, yes, And Joe said the shot
- 44:13Speaker 1: could have been more perfect, So nice work. Where did
- 44:18Speaker 1: you hit it right through the lungs? Okay? And it
- 44:21Speaker 1: didn't go anywhere? M he just went right down. He
- 44:24Speaker 1: broke his nose. Hit the grounds, heart, broke his nose
- 44:27Speaker 1: dead or the Dornell when you got out there? What
- 44:29Speaker 1: is that? Why do people say that? Why did you
- 44:33Speaker 1: just say it? Where did it come from? I don't know? Why?
- 44:38Speaker 1: Is it Dorne also dead? Well, then we're just personifying
- 44:44Speaker 1: door nails. That's you. I guys know what a what
- 44:48Speaker 1: an automotopia is? Yes? Yes, um okay. So it went
- 44:54Speaker 1: down and Joe's all excited, and I was just like,
- 44:59Speaker 1: I don't know, was weird. It was a totally different
- 45:01Speaker 1: than my reaction to Sneaky Pete. Granted I didn't get
- 45:03Speaker 1: Sneaky Pete, but I thought it was going to be
- 45:05Speaker 1: more of that, like adrenaline release and emotion, and it
- 45:08Speaker 1: was actually more like a just a void of emotion. Really,
- 45:11Speaker 1: you didn't you didn't feel emotional. No, I didn't cry.
- 45:15Speaker 1: I just felt very like an out of body. It
- 45:17Speaker 1: almost like a little bit of experience walking up. I
- 45:19Speaker 1: just didn't that's right. You said that you were like
- 45:21Speaker 1: watching yourself. Yeah, that's what it felt like. It was
- 45:23Speaker 1: just a very weird experience. I thought it was going
- 45:26Speaker 1: to be more rolls out of your body, yes, and
- 45:31Speaker 1: looked down at myself. Yeah, what did you see what
- 45:35Speaker 1: do you mean, dear me? Yeah? No, but walking up,
- 45:43Speaker 1: I was almost like I didn't know how to like
- 45:46Speaker 1: react either, but my my instinct was like, I feel
- 45:50Speaker 1: weird saying this, but I like petted him like a dog. Like.
- 45:53Speaker 1: I went like right down behind the years and pet
- 45:55Speaker 1: him and Joe, Joe has this really awesome photo. I
- 45:58Speaker 1: didn't know. He took it in my hands on my heart.
- 46:00Speaker 1: I'm like petting him and I thanked him and that
- 46:03Speaker 1: was a very powerful moment for me. I didn't end
- 46:06Speaker 1: up crying until I processed the meat that I was
- 46:10Speaker 1: at SESS. They did this whole like meat processing party,
- 46:12Speaker 1: which I was so grateful for to like at this.
- 46:15Speaker 1: I didn't tell anything a big party. Well, they did
- 46:18Speaker 1: have a right invited. There was a lot of people there,
- 46:28Speaker 1: whiskey bo big party, like a good time. From the
- 46:33Speaker 1: pictures I saw it was a good time Instagram, you
- 46:39Speaker 1: know I must have been having a big party from
- 46:42Speaker 1: my friends at night, must have been where I was.
- 46:46Speaker 1: I didn't know a big party for all my good friends.
- 46:49Speaker 1: Joe and Joe and Saith told me they were going
- 46:51Speaker 1: to help me process my dear and I showed up.
- 46:53Speaker 1: There's pizza. There was Beard, there was like three other
- 46:55Speaker 1: deer there. Rick Smith was there, Ye, Rick Smith was there.
- 46:59Speaker 1: It was I don't know about this. Yeah, it was good.
- 47:02Speaker 1: I wasn't invited though. No one told me about Sorry, Steve.
- 47:06Speaker 1: Yeah it was good. It wasn't my house kind of
- 47:12Speaker 1: so you got emotional then, yeah, like what I like,
- 47:18Speaker 1: bald really like we like brought the meat out. It
- 47:23Speaker 1: was all package and put it in my car. Joe
- 47:25Speaker 1: drove away and I just sat there and cried, Yeah,
- 47:29Speaker 1: what were you what were you feeling? Like? What was
- 47:32Speaker 1: what emotions were you're processing? I was finally I think
- 47:35Speaker 1: processing the emotion because that was like finally I went
- 47:38Speaker 1: full circle, right. It was like the realization of like
- 47:41Speaker 1: I was very grateful, like tears of someone Joe too,
- 47:44Speaker 1: like he is now meat and my f and that
- 47:47Speaker 1: was like the emotion of taking a life. It was
- 47:50Speaker 1: the actually saw him as food, which was it's you know,
- 47:54Speaker 1: I'm happy about that too. But that was the I
- 47:57Speaker 1: don't know I had time up to that point. Yeah,
- 48:04Speaker 1: maybe and maybe these other women can share this too,
- 48:08Speaker 1: Like I was so worried going into it because of
- 48:10Speaker 1: the way Sneaky Pete went down about just like getting
- 48:13Speaker 1: a shot. I was like, I want to like do
- 48:15Speaker 1: this right. I was like kept telling Joe, I want
- 48:17Speaker 1: this to be the turkey that Maggie at hunted for
- 48:21Speaker 1: four days. Yeah, and uh, I got very close but
- 48:25Speaker 1: did not kid. But I was like I wanted to
- 48:28Speaker 1: be clean, quick, and safe. And I was so worried
- 48:30Speaker 1: about getting those three things done that I totally forgot
- 48:33Speaker 1: about what happens afterwards, Like I didn't even like I knew,
- 48:36Speaker 1: like I was gonna have to process and gut and
- 48:38Speaker 1: all this. And I was like minute though, like that
- 48:40Speaker 1: shot was done and he was on the ground. I
- 48:42Speaker 1: had my moment. I was like I'm so overwhelmed, Like
- 48:45Speaker 1: what do I do now? And I was like so
- 48:48Speaker 1: grateful for Joe being there obviously through the shot, but
- 48:50Speaker 1: more so afterwards because I was like I would have
- 48:53Speaker 1: been just at complete loss of what to do. Yes,
- 48:57Speaker 1: I did, I told you. I was like I want
- 48:58Speaker 1: to do all of this, like help me. I want
- 49:00Speaker 1: to I want to cut the butthole. I want to
- 49:03Speaker 1: get in there into the vitals and have the blood
- 49:06Speaker 1: rush over me. Like yeah, I was very bloody. They
- 49:09Speaker 1: call me bloody muddy march um. Does your boyfriend like
- 49:15Speaker 1: eating the deer meat he does. He did not like
- 49:18Speaker 1: the heart. I told him. I told him I was
- 49:20Speaker 1: going to cook that and surprise him and just make
- 49:21Speaker 1: him like eat it like a random time. And that
- 49:24Speaker 1: bothered him. No. I mean, he's gotten shotguns, but he's
- 49:29Speaker 1: not gonna hunt yet, is he? Um? Is he enough
- 49:31Speaker 1: of a man where he doesn't feel emasculated by his uh? Oh?
- 49:34Speaker 1: I like to remind him. I'm like, I'm the provider.
- 49:37Speaker 1: You see the freezer, and he's like, yeah, right, great,
- 49:41Speaker 1: yeah he is. He's not all jealous to be a
- 49:44Speaker 1: passive aggressive No, No, that's not in ed Bows nature.
- 49:47Speaker 1: He had a great way of describing the heart. Yeah,
- 49:51Speaker 1: he said it was like octopus, like the spring. The
- 49:57Speaker 1: spring is just the density. He's like, it's ten. But
- 50:00Speaker 1: it's just weird to eat red meat when it has
- 50:02Speaker 1: that like denseness to it and it doesn't have the
- 50:05Speaker 1: texture what you're used to reading the grain is not Yes,
- 50:08Speaker 1: it's like there almost grainless. Yeah, And so I think
- 50:13Speaker 1: that for him was just like it's weird, you know
- 50:16Speaker 1: the grains like is if you look at paper through
- 50:18Speaker 1: a magnifying glass, where it's just like a weave yeah,
- 50:23Speaker 1: that's like yeah, it's like yeah, I mean I actually
- 50:27Speaker 1: got to eat. What was cool was like I got
- 50:28Speaker 1: to use the videos that I shot and edited with
- 50:30Speaker 1: Danielle in my heart and I was like, wow, this
- 50:33Speaker 1: is so informative. That's great. Did you did you make
- 50:36Speaker 1: any realizations about your work? It was great. I was like, they,
- 50:46Speaker 1: so go check it out. Tell people what videos you
- 50:49Speaker 1: found most useful. Um. I did how to clean a
- 50:52Speaker 1: heart one on one with you and Danielle, and then
- 50:55Speaker 1: I made her heart bulgogi recipe fire meat and Edbo
- 50:59Speaker 1: didn't like it. He loved the veggies and he was like,
- 51:02Speaker 1: you know, I'd like the flavor. I just need to
- 51:04Speaker 1: get used to that. And it was it was the
- 51:07Speaker 1: first second thing I fed him from the deer. So
- 51:13Speaker 1: did you guys, Um, did you guys do the liver? No?
- 51:16Speaker 1: I did not do the liver. Joe and I had
- 51:19Speaker 1: a lot of discussion about this about like when is
- 51:22Speaker 1: like taking enough meat out like ethical dilemma, right, He's
- 51:26Speaker 1: like when have you taken enough? And like debating that
- 51:29Speaker 1: and it was just weird. He was a big deer,
- 51:31Speaker 1: like it was a lot and we did not take
- 51:34Speaker 1: the liver. It was very muddy and nasty. What did
- 51:37Speaker 1: you end up doing with the hide? Because you said
- 51:39Speaker 1: you kept that right? Yep, you packed out the hide
- 51:42Speaker 1: you get turned into buck skin. Yeah, like a buckskin
- 51:45Speaker 1: mechanics suit. I should I should I shouldn't save up
- 51:50Speaker 1: a few hides. Yeah, my dad kept saying a bunch
- 51:52Speaker 1: of deer hides and his like business coat was made
- 51:54Speaker 1: off of his own deer hides. Really, but it was
- 51:58Speaker 1: like real seven. He's had like the lower pocket in
- 52:00Speaker 1: the big belt and that you wouldn't wear it ye.
- 52:06Speaker 1: Jana says, it's like working with a seventies superstar of
- 52:08Speaker 1: stairs to a nice What do you do with your hide?
- 52:15Speaker 1: I just w wanted to throw for the back of
- 52:17Speaker 1: the couch. You want a hair on, yeah, I wanted
- 52:19Speaker 1: hair on against They never work out because the hair
- 52:24Speaker 1: is brittle and it comes get it made in the
- 52:26Speaker 1: box because out looks just doesn't. They don't take any abuse.
- 52:33Speaker 1: You know, I had that bare rug on my couch.
- 52:36Speaker 1: You'd use like a blanket that's twenty years old. If
- 52:40Speaker 1: you had a deer hide with the hair on and
- 52:43Speaker 1: you look at it, funny, the hair comes out because
- 52:46Speaker 1: they got like a hair, not a fur. Hollow hair
- 52:50Speaker 1: and they people do it, they do it and like
- 52:53Speaker 1: nothing looks better for like, it's kind of like tattoos, right,
- 52:57Speaker 1: nothing looks better in a brand new tattooing looks more
- 53:00Speaker 1: is an old one. It's like it just doesn't work out.
- 53:03Speaker 1: It just doesn't work out. I don't have any tattoos,
- 53:06Speaker 1: Steve so so that one doesn't bring um. It just
- 53:10Speaker 1: doesn't work. If you get buckskin, it's like the rest
- 53:12Speaker 1: of your life. Man, you could do something with it.
- 53:15Speaker 1: Whenever Jane did advise me on that you get gloves,
- 53:18Speaker 1: you can get awesome gloves made from buckskin. That would
- 53:21Speaker 1: be you can make some great things while calling change. Yeah,
- 53:26Speaker 1: don't don't get the hair on. Okay, you can die
- 53:29Speaker 1: the buckskin. So you could do black black gloves with
- 53:34Speaker 1: your dear. Cool. Okay, you make probably a couple of
- 53:37Speaker 1: pairs out of your dear. I'm gonna start packing mine
- 53:39Speaker 1: next year, and that's gonna I'm making the business coat
- 53:44Speaker 1: all the time. I'm dude. You know that, dude, you
- 53:48Speaker 1: might do a collar of hair. There you go. You
- 53:51Speaker 1: know Tim what Tim Wells? Yeah, that's right. Yeah, I
- 53:54Speaker 1: was talking to him. He had a real nice jacket
- 53:57Speaker 1: that was from his own hides. Yeah, remember that. Alright.
- 54:01Speaker 1: So then seconds later Tracy got a deer. Well it
- 54:05Speaker 1: wasn't or do we talk about that about that? The
- 54:10Speaker 1: deer different? You know what, We're way out of order.
- 54:17Speaker 1: I try to interrupt earlier, but guys sometimes difficult to
- 54:20Speaker 1: around here. That's a good I had thought that I'm
- 54:23Speaker 1: gonna leave it up to It's gonna be like chef's choice.
- 54:25Speaker 1: Do you want to talk about a combo of the two?
- 54:28Speaker 1: Combo of the two? Because I think they were both
- 54:31Speaker 1: very unique in different ways. Okay, go ahead, Um okay,
- 54:36Speaker 1: who do you like better? It is not about better,
- 54:43Speaker 1: it's different. It's different that I would I would totally
- 54:47Speaker 1: agree that it's just different. It's different. That's I don't
- 54:51Speaker 1: need to make this about me. Um so wrong. Horn
- 54:55Speaker 1: hunt which was very cool. That was I guess technically
- 54:59Speaker 1: my first big game hunt. We hunted in Wyoming the
- 55:02Speaker 1: end of September. Yeah. Um, interestingly enough, I felt like,
- 55:10Speaker 1: I mean, we had had a good amount of practice,
- 55:12Speaker 1: so I was starting to feel comfortable shooting, which was
- 55:15Speaker 1: like hugely important. Like we practiced two pretty extensive times
- 55:20Speaker 1: leading up to the hunt, which kind of gave me
- 55:22Speaker 1: a good sense of confidence. Especially coming out of the
- 55:25Speaker 1: Turkey hunt. I was a little bit um. I felt
- 55:29Speaker 1: a little insecure about my shooting capabilities. Um, given the
- 55:34Speaker 1: fact that I had taken that one shot that didn't
- 55:37Speaker 1: work out so perfectly. Very different kinds of shooting though, Okay,
- 55:41Speaker 1: that's fair, but without much experience, they didn't feel different
- 55:44Speaker 1: in my mind right, Like, I just felt like I
- 55:46Speaker 1: was still in a situation with a gun with the
- 55:48Speaker 1: intention of of taking a life, and I wanted to
- 55:51Speaker 1: be able to do so effectively, lethally, smoothly and without
- 55:57Speaker 1: um any sort of negative outcome, like that was the intent.
- 56:00Speaker 1: So it didn't feel different, even though yes, now I
- 56:02Speaker 1: understand that they are different shooting um, and I feel
- 56:06Speaker 1: like are The Pronghorn hunt was nice because similar it
- 56:09Speaker 1: sounds like to Maggie, like we had time. We got
- 56:12Speaker 1: set up in a situation where we were able to
- 56:15Speaker 1: for like twenty or twenty five minutes stock to antelope.
- 56:18Speaker 1: It was a buck and a dough um pretty much. Yeah,
- 56:24Speaker 1: and your antelope was totally unaware of your being there,
- 56:28Speaker 1: completely unaware, completely unaware. They've betted down for a little while,
- 56:31Speaker 1: and so we were able to like and this is
- 56:33Speaker 1: where I kind of resonated with your communication comment, because
- 56:36Speaker 1: throughout this entire experience, I was like asking you like
- 56:40Speaker 1: five million questions, Well, what happens if this happens? What
- 56:43Speaker 1: happens if this happens? Like I felt, we had a
- 56:46Speaker 1: lot of time to kind of work through a lot
- 56:47Speaker 1: of scenarios. I tend to be a little type a
- 56:50Speaker 1: controlling and so I like to play out all the
- 56:53Speaker 1: different potential outcomes and know what I'm going to do
- 56:55Speaker 1: with every single potential outcome, and that makes me feel
- 56:58Speaker 1: more empowered and comfortable. An example of what you might
- 57:01Speaker 1: have asked you honest about um, like okay, Like one
- 57:07Speaker 1: of the challenges we had was there was a pivot.
- 57:09Speaker 1: So we were hunting in a corn field and there
- 57:12Speaker 1: was a pivot, and the two antelope kind of continued
- 57:15Speaker 1: to come in and out of the plane of pivot.
- 57:16Speaker 1: Just saw everybody listen, knows exactly what we're doing. Sure,
- 57:20Speaker 1: So it's um farmland, and so it's how they irrigate.
- 57:24Speaker 1: So it's like a big irrigation water pivot with huge tires,
- 57:28Speaker 1: and so the antelope were kind of in front and
- 57:30Speaker 1: back and forth around the pivot, and so I was
- 57:33Speaker 1: very apprehensive about getting set up at a place where
- 57:35Speaker 1: I felt comfortable being able to take the shot where
- 57:38Speaker 1: the tire wasn't exactly behind me. And then when they
- 57:40Speaker 1: went on the other side of the pivot there were
- 57:42Speaker 1: there was kind of a drop off, so then obviously
- 57:45Speaker 1: the horizon was behind it. That's what you mean by
- 57:47Speaker 1: dropping horizon, like not taking the shot because you can't
- 57:51Speaker 1: see enough directly behind it. When you're flying in an
- 57:55Speaker 1: airplane and you look down and you see a square
- 57:57Speaker 1: of ground with a circle in the square, and the
- 58:00Speaker 1: of the circle touched the four flat sides of the square,
- 58:04Speaker 1: you're looking down at the center pivot. Okay, let's telling people,
- 58:09Speaker 1: oh cool around. Yeah, but I don't think that was
- 58:14Speaker 1: the center pivot, was it. Those are long pivots. I
- 58:17Speaker 1: don't think there's a lot of They'll sometimes make a
- 58:20Speaker 1: pivot that only cuts forty five degrees. You think those
- 58:23Speaker 1: are center pivots? Uh, you're saying that instead the whole
- 58:29Speaker 1: pivot like movies like good She's blowing me out of
- 58:34Speaker 1: the water on egg here, probably wheel line, right, Okay,
- 58:40Speaker 1: I'll back out. You don't see a lot of center
- 58:43Speaker 1: pivots in Montana. Possibly Wyoming since we were in Wyoming's
- 58:47Speaker 1: it's more of those line what do you call them lines? Well,
- 58:49Speaker 1: we always called them wheel lines, but wheel lines because
- 58:53Speaker 1: the old versions look like wheels are lower, like a
- 58:57Speaker 1: wagon wheel four feet tall. Edited out all the stuff
- 59:01Speaker 1: that makes me look like I don't know what I'm
- 59:02Speaker 1: talking about. That for me to do that, for me
- 59:08Speaker 1: to make me sound good, putting me saying something from
- 59:12Speaker 1: another time. And then I saw the farmer come out
- 59:19Speaker 1: and cut that corn. Okay, So the pivot you use
- 59:25Speaker 1: the word pivot, I use the word pivot. It was
- 59:28Speaker 1: a pivot, but it's still called a pivot, I believe. Anyways,
- 59:32Speaker 1: I'm not an agriculture export by any mean. Yeah, big
- 59:36Speaker 1: gass tires the horizon. And so I was asking a
- 59:40Speaker 1: lot of questions specifically relating to that. In addition to
- 59:43Speaker 1: the fact that I was comfortable enough, we were able
- 59:46Speaker 1: to set up in prone position, which was my desired position.
- 59:49Speaker 1: Like I really we had been on a couple of
- 59:51Speaker 1: antelope the day before, but it was a seated position.
- 59:54Speaker 1: I really wasn't as comfortable shooting sitting up like I
- 59:57Speaker 1: still need to work out my shooting and setting up
- 59:59Speaker 1: UM was a major difference in my accuracy between being
- 1:00:02Speaker 1: improne and being seated, so we were able to lie
- 1:00:05Speaker 1: down and the other thing that was still kind of
- 1:00:07Speaker 1: a struggle, which also was a struggle a little bit
- 1:00:10Speaker 1: on my dear hunt with you, Steve is I still
- 1:00:12Speaker 1: haven't mastered being able to like quickly and efficiently get
- 1:00:16Speaker 1: set up on my gun with like total perfect vision
- 1:00:20Speaker 1: in my scope. Same like it's like it takes me
- 1:00:24Speaker 1: a good amount of time to feel comfortable in my
- 1:00:26Speaker 1: scope where I'm like, Okay, now I have a lay
- 1:00:29Speaker 1: of the land. Now I feel like I directly have
- 1:00:31Speaker 1: you know, the view that I need to have, and
- 1:00:33Speaker 1: I'm comfortable in it. I can't just like hop right
- 1:00:35Speaker 1: on and get it. Yeah, that's the thing we point
- 1:00:37Speaker 1: out to people ahead. No, I was gonna say that
- 1:00:40Speaker 1: you guys all have been I don't know, Kylie, maybe
- 1:00:43Speaker 1: not so much. I think you, Maggie and Sam and
- 1:00:46Speaker 1: Tracy have been on very accelerated sort of hunting programs
- 1:00:49Speaker 1: here with us. And then I've said it before you
- 1:00:52Speaker 1: guys all got done with these successful haunts, I'm like,
- 1:00:54Speaker 1: now you got to go back and go hunt squirrels
- 1:00:56Speaker 1: and rabbits for a couple of years, because that's where
- 1:01:00Speaker 1: you get that practice of doing that, not shooting one
- 1:01:03Speaker 1: anemop one deer. How to define stuff. We're are talking like, oh,
- 1:01:07Speaker 1: when you're going to hunt, man, I was like super
- 1:01:08Speaker 1: important breaking your boots or whatever, get in good shape
- 1:01:10Speaker 1: for hill climbing. But new hunters a lot of stuff
- 1:01:14Speaker 1: gives them the slip because they can't find it in
- 1:01:16Speaker 1: the scope. I can totally relate to that. I can
- 1:01:18Speaker 1: relate to them. It's I think you wind up it
- 1:01:22Speaker 1: does it? It's not true when you're when you have
- 1:01:24Speaker 1: it resting on a backpack. But just like free handing,
- 1:01:27Speaker 1: I think one of the things that makes it easy
- 1:01:29Speaker 1: is I'm looking at it and I bring the scope
- 1:01:33Speaker 1: to my eye down. I don't like lose I don't
- 1:01:37Speaker 1: really think of myself as losing sight of it. So
- 1:01:41Speaker 1: you're moving your scope instead of moving your eye. And like,
- 1:01:44Speaker 1: if I'm just like looking at something, I want to
- 1:01:46Speaker 1: look at my skullpe I want to look at it
- 1:01:48Speaker 1: right the day we did a quick little bit of
- 1:01:50Speaker 1: squirrel hunting, and so you're just kind of like free
- 1:01:52Speaker 1: handing and it's like I don't I don't put it
- 1:01:54Speaker 1: up and then look through the scupe and then go
- 1:01:56Speaker 1: searching for the thing. It's like my eyes on it
- 1:02:00Speaker 1: and the scope just comes to it and there it is.
- 1:02:02Speaker 1: I think I'm conforming the scope to where I'm already
- 1:02:05Speaker 1: know I'm looking. Okay, I'm not. Any good thing people
- 1:02:07Speaker 1: do is a they know it's out there, then they
- 1:02:10Speaker 1: get where they're looking through the scope, and then they
- 1:02:11Speaker 1: start this whole search process rather than being like, I
- 1:02:15Speaker 1: know my eye needs to be doing like this, like
- 1:02:18Speaker 1: this is where it is. Line that thing up to it.
- 1:02:21Speaker 1: But but you know that doesn't But that's not how
- 1:02:24Speaker 1: you're doing it. Like when you gotta laying on your backpack,
- 1:02:26Speaker 1: you are your your eyes going to the scope, not
- 1:02:30Speaker 1: the scope going to your eye. We were on a bipod,
- 1:02:34Speaker 1: which was also awesome and like super stable and really
- 1:02:38Speaker 1: clean set up. So that was like it was a
- 1:02:40Speaker 1: strong level of the stand that clicks to here. It
- 1:02:44Speaker 1: was great. I kept it in my pocket like it
- 1:02:46Speaker 1: was easy to put on. Like that actually ended up
- 1:02:48Speaker 1: being a huge asset for that hunt, especially since when
- 1:02:52Speaker 1: we finally got set up, we were like on this
- 1:02:54Speaker 1: little like noll and we had like literally a clean,
- 1:02:56Speaker 1: a clean look directly at the antelope. The other thing.
- 1:02:59Speaker 1: I think it's interesting too. And this was different than
- 1:03:02Speaker 1: the turkey hunt. Um, something that was always on my
- 1:03:05Speaker 1: mind was if you were in a scenario where there's
- 1:03:07Speaker 1: multiple animals, ensuring that you are finding the correct animal
- 1:03:13Speaker 1: was something that was anxiety producing for me. A little
- 1:03:17Speaker 1: less so on the prong horn because it was just
- 1:03:19Speaker 1: two and it was very clear, you know who the
- 1:03:22Speaker 1: buck was and which one was the dough less so
- 1:03:25Speaker 1: I had more of that challenge when we went deer
- 1:03:27Speaker 1: hunting together Steve, because there were there were a lot,
- 1:03:30Speaker 1: there were more deer, and it was hard for me
- 1:03:32Speaker 1: to like actually find the buck in that group. Yeah,
- 1:03:36Speaker 1: that was like a should have been here yesterday, but
- 1:03:39Speaker 1: we were there yesterday. What do you mean do you
- 1:03:41Speaker 1: mean just deer running? Oh? Yeah, like just going insane
- 1:03:56Speaker 1: on that hunt. And and and obviously Jimmy was super
- 1:04:00Speaker 1: excited about it. And Steve said to me afterwards, I
- 1:04:02Speaker 1: really wish that maybe I hadn't brought him because he
- 1:04:05Speaker 1: shouldn't see, Honey, situations where there's this many deer and
- 1:04:08Speaker 1: that you don't have to work as hard as you
- 1:04:10Speaker 1: need to work. He didn't like this. On the way out,
- 1:04:14Speaker 1: he starts like trying to hit Tracy up for a
- 1:04:16Speaker 1: permission a youth season. That's well, that deer was down
- 1:04:26Speaker 1: to ground about five seconds he was angling in on
- 1:04:29Speaker 1: so h next youth season. It hysteric, moly, that apple
- 1:04:37Speaker 1: is not falling far h so so how far away
- 1:04:43Speaker 1: was the animal? Just I think a little shy of three? Really, wow, Tracy, seriously,
- 1:04:50Speaker 1: I wouldn't lie about it. Yeah, but you know, we
- 1:04:53Speaker 1: had been in the field together practicing, you know, pro position. Um.
- 1:04:58Speaker 1: I think just like a couple of days earlier, we
- 1:05:00Speaker 1: had been at my house and I think the going
- 1:05:01Speaker 1: on my house is that like to twenty and we
- 1:05:06Speaker 1: had done when we were all doing some practicing together. Um,
- 1:05:11Speaker 1: I had shot one time at three hundred and hit
- 1:05:13Speaker 1: the gong. So I felt like I had clearly had
- 1:05:16Speaker 1: the ability to do it. And the fact that we
- 1:05:18Speaker 1: had been set up for like what was it, probably
- 1:05:21Speaker 1: thirty minutes or so. I felt comfortable. I was able
- 1:05:23Speaker 1: to take a lot of deep breaths, I was able
- 1:05:25Speaker 1: to relax into the you double along to him. Yeah,
- 1:05:29Speaker 1: it wasn't bad. It was bad. I mean he didn't
- 1:05:32Speaker 1: even make it to the other side of the time.
- 1:05:35Speaker 1: I was like, no, no, like you'd seen, you'd almost
- 1:05:41Speaker 1: like not just only visualized, but actually been through physically,
- 1:05:44Speaker 1: like like the scope itself. Right, we had zero and
- 1:05:48Speaker 1: you had hit the gong with the first hash mark
- 1:05:49Speaker 1: at my house first try a couple of days earlier,
- 1:05:52Speaker 1: and then using the next hash mark down, which we
- 1:05:54Speaker 1: knew was three hundred. It's like, there's really no difference.
- 1:05:57Speaker 1: You're just gonna use that second hash mark down dead
- 1:06:00Speaker 1: center and you felt comfortable. No, my surprise wasn't that
- 1:06:03Speaker 1: you shouldn't have. It's just like, having seen the spot,
- 1:06:06Speaker 1: I didn't realize it was that far away. Oh, I say, right,
- 1:06:11Speaker 1: not shocked that Tracy was able to do that, not
- 1:06:13Speaker 1: at all. And also you're you're not impulsive, the opposite
- 1:06:18Speaker 1: of impulsive when it comes to shooting. I don't mean,
- 1:06:21Speaker 1: I'm not saying in life, I don't know, but when
- 1:06:23Speaker 1: it comes to shooting, you're not like that kind of
- 1:06:26Speaker 1: like just let's get the lead flying And no that's
- 1:06:30Speaker 1: not really No, I'm not comfortable with that. And I
- 1:06:34Speaker 1: even have experience with you that my um my pace
- 1:06:38Speaker 1: at times can create some frustration on your like for example,
- 1:06:47Speaker 1: when I was um when we were hunting deer together
- 1:06:53Speaker 1: I'm set up. I didn't feel like perfectly comfortable in
- 1:06:57Speaker 1: that situation because I was sitting up. I was trying
- 1:06:59Speaker 1: to get in a place mood. Okay, yeah, set the
- 1:07:02Speaker 1: mood laid out. Tracy has a like a little horse property,
- 1:07:10Speaker 1: has some horses and then has some friendly relations with
- 1:07:14Speaker 1: her neighbors and it's a little bit of a patchwork
- 1:07:17Speaker 1: of landownership. And we just left her house and went
- 1:07:21Speaker 1: on a little stroll in the neighbor's place, and it
- 1:07:24Speaker 1: was like unbelievable. Yeah, it was like the night. Well
- 1:07:28Speaker 1: it was the date um Saturday, novemb just like the night.
- 1:07:36Speaker 1: But I don't think it was just the night though, Steve.
- 1:07:38Speaker 1: I mean I had been sending you pictures like leading
- 1:07:41Speaker 1: up to it, because that one piece of property like
- 1:07:43Speaker 1: obviously doesn't get really any pressure, and the deer are
- 1:07:47Speaker 1: there in high volumes all the time, but it's not
- 1:07:51Speaker 1: there's that and it wasn't just but it was the behavior.
- 1:07:56Speaker 1: There was a lot of them, but there's a lot
- 1:07:59Speaker 1: of them. It was the behavior is those books were
- 1:08:02Speaker 1: just yeah, like you think they were leaving, but then
- 1:08:05Speaker 1: you realized they're not. They're just like going over to
- 1:08:08Speaker 1: like check something and coming back and singing and like,
- 1:08:11Speaker 1: here's what I don't you know about? Yeah, just like
- 1:08:16Speaker 1: and no sort of concerted movement in any direction and
- 1:08:20Speaker 1: just like zig zag and crossing and tongues hanging out. Yeah,
- 1:08:23Speaker 1: it's just like we just kind of waded into it,
- 1:08:26Speaker 1: and all of a sudden, I was like, you can't.
- 1:08:27Speaker 1: I still don't know how many little little box like thinkers,
- 1:08:31Speaker 1: but just bunches of them. Yeah, yeah, there were a
- 1:08:34Speaker 1: lot of them. Couldn't keep them straight totally because the
- 1:08:37Speaker 1: first kind of deer that we tried to get set
- 1:08:40Speaker 1: up on, we then spooked a little bit, and then
- 1:08:42Speaker 1: we moved in a little bit, immediately found another book.
- 1:08:45Speaker 1: Had to move in a little bit more to kind
- 1:08:47Speaker 1: of get some grass out of the way to be
- 1:08:48Speaker 1: able to like actually sit and have a clear shot.
- 1:08:51Speaker 1: And I got all three of my kids true, which
- 1:08:53Speaker 1: added incremental pressure because from the moment they showed up,
- 1:08:56Speaker 1: Jimmy was like, you're gonna break You're gonna break our record. Right,
- 1:09:00Speaker 1: You're gonna brek our record of how quickly we shoot
- 1:09:01Speaker 1: a deer. Right, I am the wrong girl. There's a
- 1:09:07Speaker 1: record in the Ronella household. He and I last year
- 1:09:11Speaker 1: this didn't happen. It was this year. So last year
- 1:09:14Speaker 1: around Thanksgiving, UM, like yeah, so we're hunting white tails
- 1:09:22Speaker 1: and we went out and we're hunting on an open
- 1:09:25Speaker 1: access area like a black management area. And we went
- 1:09:29Speaker 1: and there's a fence, there's like a safety zone and
- 1:09:31Speaker 1: there's public hunting on the other side of the fence.
- 1:09:34Speaker 1: And we basically got to the fence and sat down
- 1:09:37Speaker 1: or like back to the fence and had hot chocolate
- 1:09:43Speaker 1: with us and everything. It's two in the afternoon and
- 1:09:45Speaker 1: I like rattle, like a twenty second rattle session and
- 1:09:48Speaker 1: I know, sooner than putting him down. And he's like,
- 1:09:50Speaker 1: here's the buck, and I'm and I keep always laugh ABox.
- 1:09:54Speaker 1: I was kind of like thinking, like, shut up, kid,
- 1:09:56Speaker 1: I'm trying to hunt. You know enough, here's a book
- 1:10:01Speaker 1: running at us. You know. We hadn't even done, Like
- 1:10:03Speaker 1: I said, we talked about the hot chocolate yet. I
- 1:10:06Speaker 1: mean it was over and we were done hunting in
- 1:10:08Speaker 1: three minutes. So that was in his mind that that's
- 1:10:11Speaker 1: how you do a deer hunt, so high standards, high expectations.
- 1:10:16Speaker 1: I was like, let's change your perspective. That's not going
- 1:10:19Speaker 1: to happen. But not only do I have obviously the
- 1:10:23Speaker 1: pressure of you know, Steve, because there is pressure. When
- 1:10:27Speaker 1: I was Steve, I was held back. I was back
- 1:10:31Speaker 1: with my daughter, my little boy. Okay, you were up
- 1:10:33Speaker 1: with my older boy. I understand that, but I'm just
- 1:10:35Speaker 1: saying that he was. He was impatient, absolutely, but like
- 1:10:42Speaker 1: you're like, okay, I want to like succeed. There's high expectations,
- 1:10:47Speaker 1: like I'm still very new and novice at this. And
- 1:10:50Speaker 1: then you add that all three kids are like come on,
- 1:10:53Speaker 1: get it, like that was like quadruple. But you were
- 1:10:57Speaker 1: you were hunting with the flip flop flusher. Thank God
- 1:11:00Speaker 1: for the flop flusher. Once again, this is um the
- 1:11:03Speaker 1: second time the flip flop flusher has come through for me. UM.
- 1:11:06Speaker 1: And he was real relaxed and and was not putting
- 1:11:10Speaker 1: pressure on and was helping me get set up and
- 1:11:12Speaker 1: get comfortable and not taking the shot. Um if I
- 1:11:16Speaker 1: wasn't comfortable, But so I took my first shot. At
- 1:11:20Speaker 1: one point I didn't have to crawl forward. Oh my gosh,
- 1:11:23Speaker 1: my kids like a crawl forward because I'm talking to
- 1:11:27Speaker 1: what's the problem. He didn't say it like that story. Yes,
- 1:11:34Speaker 1: So it's like I'm like on my daughter's like what
- 1:11:38Speaker 1: is she doing? Was just insane six year old like
- 1:11:46Speaker 1: so and literally I'm like adjusting my gun and then
- 1:11:49Speaker 1: I hear what's the problem. And I'm like in my
- 1:11:52Speaker 1: right ear, like behind, what's the problem? Was taking so long?
- 1:11:55Speaker 1: I literally looked back. I'm like, I'm getting comfortable and
- 1:11:58Speaker 1: set up. That's what's taking and you're inter go back,
- 1:12:02Speaker 1: go back to your seat. But and then my first shot,
- 1:12:09Speaker 1: I just still have such that moment leading up to
- 1:12:13Speaker 1: pulling the trigger is such a overwhelmingly emotional feeling leading
- 1:12:19Speaker 1: up to It's like the anticipation. It's like, Okay, he's
- 1:12:23Speaker 1: clear in my in my scope, this is this is
- 1:12:26Speaker 1: the right time to take the shot. But the anticipation
- 1:12:29Speaker 1: of my mind going, what's going to happen? Is it
- 1:12:31Speaker 1: going to be a good enough shot? What's the feeling
- 1:12:33Speaker 1: going to feel? Like the like angst of like not
- 1:12:37Speaker 1: knowing is still something that like really like take takes
- 1:12:40Speaker 1: over for me. My brother talks about that, um he
- 1:12:47Speaker 1: thinks that that feeling, that question is what throws him
- 1:12:53Speaker 1: when he throws an archery shot. Oh, intersting, It's like
- 1:12:59Speaker 1: the wanting to know what will happen? Yea and the
- 1:13:04Speaker 1: question about what will happen is is what that's what
- 1:13:09Speaker 1: gets in his head and messes up his system. I
- 1:13:11Speaker 1: can I there's no negative. You'll suffare right exactly exactly
- 1:13:20Speaker 1: like I don't want a negative to happen. I don't
- 1:13:21Speaker 1: want a negative to happen. I don't want a negative
- 1:13:23Speaker 1: to happen. Yes, negative As a result, I think of
- 1:13:27Speaker 1: like thinking that your entire body must like tense up
- 1:13:30Speaker 1: a little bit, because obviously there's such a connection between
- 1:13:32Speaker 1: mind and physical body that I feel like when you're
- 1:13:35Speaker 1: tense like that and you take your shot, I feel
- 1:13:37Speaker 1: like those were the moments practicing where I'd like throw
- 1:13:39Speaker 1: to the right or something because I would feel like
- 1:13:42Speaker 1: worked up about like what was going to happen and
- 1:13:44Speaker 1: was I going to make a good shot, And then
- 1:13:45Speaker 1: you'd end up throwing it a little bit. Don't you
- 1:13:47Speaker 1: think that speaks to like the confidence that you're feeling
- 1:13:50Speaker 1: in that moment and like should you not take that
- 1:13:52Speaker 1: shot there? Because like I like, there's definitely those times
- 1:13:56Speaker 1: where it's like I set up for a shot and
- 1:13:58Speaker 1: I thought that then when I actually killed my dear,
- 1:14:02Speaker 1: I did not have any of those feelings, Like none
- 1:14:04Speaker 1: of that went through my brain. It seems like the
- 1:14:07Speaker 1: best shooters are the people that go from A to
- 1:14:08Speaker 1: B to C without getting too far ahead of the line.
- 1:14:12Speaker 1: You know. They're like compartmentalizing. I do this, I do this,
- 1:14:15Speaker 1: and when you throw in D in front of B. Yeah,
- 1:14:18Speaker 1: you know what I'm saying. Yes, that's a very good
- 1:14:20Speaker 1: way of thinking about it. I try to come up
- 1:14:22Speaker 1: with for archery. I try to come up with ah
- 1:14:28Speaker 1: mantra is not the right word. It's like a series
- 1:14:31Speaker 1: of steps, sort of like yeah at that point, yeah,
- 1:14:35Speaker 1: and I still and and Mark Kenyon talks a little
- 1:14:37Speaker 1: bit about this too, like he's got a little thingy repeats,
- 1:14:40Speaker 1: but then you just forget to repeat it. Yeah. Well
- 1:14:42Speaker 1: then you just in front of you and everything goes black.
- 1:14:46Speaker 1: Yeah oh yeah, here's the part right anchor here. As
- 1:14:51Speaker 1: it's coming, I'm like, oh yeah, I'm gonna do my
- 1:14:53Speaker 1: little deal. Yeah, I'm gonna do that deal like nice
- 1:14:56Speaker 1: and slow. And then all of a sudden you put
- 1:14:58Speaker 1: your ball bag and just like don't do the D. No.
- 1:15:01Speaker 1: But there are shooters that can do the deal, and
- 1:15:03Speaker 1: they're the ones that kill giants. Yeah, yeah, yeah, I'd
- 1:15:08Speaker 1: like to get better at that because that that I
- 1:15:10Speaker 1: feel like, in of itself is like a reason why
- 1:15:14Speaker 1: I still feel like nervous and a little bit intimidated.
- 1:15:17Speaker 1: So you touch one off and what happens? It freaking
- 1:15:21Speaker 1: didn't go anywhere like my first shot. I was like,
- 1:15:25Speaker 1: you know, after you take your shot, you're like, what happened?
- 1:15:27Speaker 1: What happened? What's like? So that's like you didn't touch
- 1:15:36Speaker 1: anything that's deadly shit, I don't know what happened. And
- 1:15:44Speaker 1: I was like, oh no, because I was like he
- 1:15:48Speaker 1: wasn't that far off? How far was he? I can't
- 1:15:51Speaker 1: remember it or something. Yeah, it's not something. I didn't
- 1:15:57Speaker 1: feel uncomfortable distance not. I think it was like that
- 1:16:02Speaker 1: shot was very close after you had crawled up, and
- 1:16:06Speaker 1: I was like, you can say that. I was starting
- 1:16:11Speaker 1: to get a little dark. I was like starting to
- 1:16:13Speaker 1: play through too much in my crazy head. You know.
- 1:16:16Speaker 1: I thought maybe something had happened and someone's wrong with you.
- 1:16:20Speaker 1: Were you rattled afterwards after that one shot? So I
- 1:16:24Speaker 1: wasn't rattled, but I was like, Okay, something is a
- 1:16:27Speaker 1: little amiss here. I need to like re center and
- 1:16:30Speaker 1: regroup and like get my stuff together before taking this
- 1:16:34Speaker 1: next year because I didn't move. The deer did not
- 1:16:37Speaker 1: move like he like looked up. He was like, no,
- 1:16:40Speaker 1: I said, they were just so I was like, okay,
- 1:16:44Speaker 1: well now I have the same situation. Let me re
- 1:16:48Speaker 1: calibrate everything and get organized and try again. Yeah, I've
- 1:16:51Speaker 1: had it where you missed and then on that second
- 1:16:53Speaker 1: shot you're like, okay, now I know what I need
- 1:16:56Speaker 1: to do. Yeah, yeah, that's an interesting point totally like
- 1:16:59Speaker 1: you kind of get focus. The client said this I'll
- 1:17:02Speaker 1: never forget because he I think, had like two years
- 1:17:04Speaker 1: in a row, killed on a second shot after within
- 1:17:07Speaker 1: the first one, and when he would retell the story,
- 1:17:10Speaker 1: he don't. It would like to remind everybody at the
- 1:17:12Speaker 1: table that you know, like any hunter, good average hunter
- 1:17:16Speaker 1: can kill on the first shot, but it really takes
- 1:17:18Speaker 1: a great hunter compose yourself after a miss and then
- 1:17:23Speaker 1: make a great second shot. I don't know. But then
- 1:17:31Speaker 1: so my second shot I hit him and he went
- 1:17:34Speaker 1: right down. The other element that I find I really
- 1:17:37Speaker 1: struggle with two and this happened with my antelope. Punt
- 1:17:39Speaker 1: is I have not mastered like staying in my scope
- 1:17:43Speaker 1: after the shot to be able to keep a close
- 1:17:46Speaker 1: look at what actually has happened. Like my antelope unt
- 1:17:50Speaker 1: I saw, I couldn't tell if it was the bucker
- 1:17:52Speaker 1: the dough that was still in my scope and I
- 1:17:54Speaker 1: had to look up and it was the honest who
- 1:17:56Speaker 1: was like, great shot, He's down. And same with the deer.
- 1:18:00Speaker 1: I'm like, where where is he? What happened? Like? I
- 1:18:03Speaker 1: feel like I have not like masterds staying in my
- 1:18:05Speaker 1: scope and being able to fully evaluate kind of the
- 1:18:11Speaker 1: on those light recoil rifles, Um, you have six five
- 1:18:16Speaker 1: creed more On those light leak recoil rifles. Uh, they
- 1:18:21Speaker 1: tend to kind of settle right back in. The reason
- 1:18:24Speaker 1: I depending on your body posture, they might jump right
- 1:18:26Speaker 1: or left, but if you're like square to them, they
- 1:18:28Speaker 1: tend to settle back in. But so few people I
- 1:18:31Speaker 1: don't do it. I I have followed through because I
- 1:18:35Speaker 1: just know I could like shoot fairly accurately, but I
- 1:18:37Speaker 1: lift my head up to see what's going on because
- 1:18:39Speaker 1: I want to see what's going on. It's kind of human,
- 1:18:42Speaker 1: but like like really like technical shooters stay in it right,
- 1:18:46Speaker 1: and they like they like it. Like like real technical
- 1:18:48Speaker 1: shooters sort of a mark of of their shooting skill
- 1:18:52Speaker 1: and process and positioning is that that thing settles right
- 1:18:55Speaker 1: back where it was like that you should be like
- 1:18:58Speaker 1: the recoil wayam it drops back down and you're looking
- 1:19:00Speaker 1: at it totally Like I would love to be able
- 1:19:03Speaker 1: to find tune that because I feel like if I
- 1:19:05Speaker 1: were ever in a situation which I feel like is
- 1:19:08Speaker 1: a common situation where you're not able to get a
- 1:19:12Speaker 1: shot that is you know, clean and lethal, or you
- 1:19:16Speaker 1: know that that that the animal drops to be able
- 1:19:19Speaker 1: to be in a situation where you're calm and organized
- 1:19:21Speaker 1: and collected and exactly where the animal is be able
- 1:19:23Speaker 1: to take a second shot, like that's something that you know,
- 1:19:26Speaker 1: I've thought a lot about and I'm not sure I
- 1:19:27Speaker 1: would be capable of shooting magnum rifles off the backpacks
- 1:19:32Speaker 1: and you know, bushes and cactuses and whatnot. It just doesn't.
- 1:19:37Speaker 1: I just lit my head up. I want to know
- 1:19:39Speaker 1: what's going on because something as you need to know
- 1:19:41Speaker 1: what's going on totally. But I had a great buddy
- 1:19:43Speaker 1: that James and Nash told me when I had a
- 1:19:45Speaker 1: flinch or when something like that, when I pop up,
- 1:19:48Speaker 1: he said, you gotta go shoot five hundred grounds for
- 1:19:50Speaker 1: twenty two and just get comfortable with like a small
- 1:19:53Speaker 1: caliber rifle and then your body sort of mechanically exactly
- 1:19:59Speaker 1: interesting to go shoot ground scrolls or something, you know,
- 1:20:01Speaker 1: our targets with the twenty two and there's no impact
- 1:20:03Speaker 1: your shoulder at all. Yeah, military shooters, man, it's all
- 1:20:07Speaker 1: through the scroll. They just looked there. That's where they're looking,
- 1:20:10Speaker 1: and ask where they stay looking. The other thing I
- 1:20:12Speaker 1: learned to where I realized was, um, the at least
- 1:20:15Speaker 1: for me, the importance of having done some practice in
- 1:20:19Speaker 1: a close time period to actually going out, because I
- 1:20:24Speaker 1: remember reflecting and thinking about the difference of like on
- 1:20:27Speaker 1: the antelope on we had had a couple of practice days.
- 1:20:30Speaker 1: I was like, Okay, it's it's recent. My capability within
- 1:20:33Speaker 1: this realm is recent. And we didn't practice before we
- 1:20:36Speaker 1: went out because it wasn't like it was that much
- 1:20:37Speaker 1: time period. But I definitely felt like I was worried
- 1:20:41Speaker 1: about being rusty. So like the importance of practice of
- 1:20:45Speaker 1: like just getting that comfort level and like quieting your
- 1:20:48Speaker 1: mind I think is hugely beneficial. So I know what happened.
- 1:20:52Speaker 1: You shot again? Well, yeah, the second shot I hit,
- 1:20:56Speaker 1: I hit the deer. The deer went down, and so
- 1:20:59Speaker 1: then you came running up with the kids and said, Okay,
- 1:21:02Speaker 1: we gotta go. We've got to you know, we've got
- 1:21:04Speaker 1: to get over there to make sure everything is okay
- 1:21:06Speaker 1: to look at. You know, we don't know what the
- 1:21:08Speaker 1: current state of the deer is, which wasn't really something
- 1:21:12Speaker 1: that I had been thinking about. So on that conversation
- 1:21:15Speaker 1: that walk over I definitely started to become a little
- 1:21:18Speaker 1: bit worked out, because I was pretty excited to get
- 1:21:21Speaker 1: over there. Oh man, well I had seen some I
- 1:21:24Speaker 1: had seen some reasonably we should probably get over there.
- 1:21:29Speaker 1: You never told me that. Well, I told you get
- 1:21:31Speaker 1: over there. What did you see? I'm curious what did
- 1:21:36Speaker 1: you see that made you feel as though that perhaps
- 1:21:38Speaker 1: the deer was not dead? Just the I mean, it's
- 1:21:42Speaker 1: like very tell just very tell tale, the way like
- 1:21:46Speaker 1: it hits and then what it does after down, like
- 1:21:49Speaker 1: any sort of um, any sort of like actual concerted
- 1:21:56Speaker 1: effort to get something, like any kind of like logical movement,
- 1:22:00Speaker 1: like with turkeys, right, like turkeys hume they just flop,
- 1:22:04Speaker 1: But all of a sudden you realize that the turkey
- 1:22:06Speaker 1: is kind of like very definitely flopping away from you.
- 1:22:11Speaker 1: Like that's not good. That's like, that's not him flopping.
- 1:22:14Speaker 1: That's things going wrong, you know, you know what I'm saying. Yeah,
- 1:22:20Speaker 1: So I don't know, I just saw, like I felt something. Yeah,
- 1:22:23Speaker 1: I mean I saw, I mean yeah yeah, yeah, yeah yeah.
- 1:22:26Speaker 1: So we scooted. It was immediately mortally wounded correct um.
- 1:22:31Speaker 1: And so that was a whole another kind of first
- 1:22:33Speaker 1: time experience, UM in the sense of we got over
- 1:22:38Speaker 1: there and the deer was not dead, um, and that
- 1:22:43Speaker 1: that that is something that's very hard for me. That
- 1:22:47Speaker 1: was like I had a moment where I was like,
- 1:22:49Speaker 1: I don't want to do this, I like talk about
- 1:22:50Speaker 1: kids immediately, sir, we're trying to make you feel better.
- 1:22:57Speaker 1: I didn't know that. That's sweet, totally very sweet. Yeah.
- 1:23:06Speaker 1: I don't know why they were not upset, but I
- 1:23:09Speaker 1: remember which ones were like, oh, don't worry. Both both
- 1:23:12Speaker 1: both Rosie and Jimmy were like that. I mean, Jimmy
- 1:23:16Speaker 1: was way more like that. That boy is so sensitive
- 1:23:20Speaker 1: and so reflective and so endearing and like so connected.
- 1:23:24Speaker 1: He's just so sophisticated for his age, and he, like
- 1:23:27Speaker 1: I think, could read my feelings and emotions and inevitably,
- 1:23:30Speaker 1: like gut instinctually is like wanting to make me feel
- 1:23:33Speaker 1: better and to like to help help help me understand
- 1:23:38Speaker 1: that this is a common situation. But um, I definitely
- 1:23:42Speaker 1: had an immediate reaction of like, no, I don't want
- 1:23:44Speaker 1: to do it. I can't do it. I can't do it,
- 1:23:45Speaker 1: can't do it, can't do it. I remember we had
- 1:23:47Speaker 1: to tell you have to. We can't, we can't leave it.
- 1:23:49Speaker 1: Do it. Yes, I was, but that was my immediate
- 1:23:51Speaker 1: gut reaction was like I can't because you begin to
- 1:23:54Speaker 1: like humanize the situation, You begin to humanize. I don't
- 1:23:58Speaker 1: know how to not do this. You see this magnificent
- 1:24:02Speaker 1: animal lying there, and you immediately start thinking about is
- 1:24:06Speaker 1: this animal suffering? What have I done to this animal?
- 1:24:08Speaker 1: Now you're up close to it. It's still alive. It
- 1:24:11Speaker 1: clearly had paralyzed it to some degree, and you make
- 1:24:15Speaker 1: it like a human interaction experience that now you have
- 1:24:18Speaker 1: to be intimately connected with it to take its life.
- 1:24:21Speaker 1: Something in that vein, That something within that vein was
- 1:24:24Speaker 1: kind of the experience that I was feeling close enough
- 1:24:27Speaker 1: distance at that point where it becomes very very real,
- 1:24:30Speaker 1: very real, and you just you put yourself in that situation,
- 1:24:34Speaker 1: and I don't know, you just think about all these
- 1:24:36Speaker 1: various aspects of it and Seth had to shoot it again.
- 1:24:39Speaker 1: Seth had me shoot it again. So instead of Steve
- 1:24:42Speaker 1: telling me where to shoot it, because that was not
- 1:24:45Speaker 1: um the most productive, Seth was like, just do this
- 1:24:49Speaker 1: and I was like okay, and then um, I shot
- 1:24:53Speaker 1: him again while he was laying laying there. It's very
- 1:24:59Speaker 1: wrong experience that part. Yeah, did your boyfriend like eating deer? Um?
- 1:25:05Speaker 1: He freaking loves it? Are you kidding? He's He's so envious,
- 1:25:09Speaker 1: I think in so many ways. And he would probably
- 1:25:11Speaker 1: tell you this if you asked him this question. So
- 1:25:14Speaker 1: not only is the envious of the fact that I've
- 1:25:17Speaker 1: had this magnificent opportunity to learn from like the very
- 1:25:21Speaker 1: best within this space, but he's envious that I've like
- 1:25:24Speaker 1: pushed myself outside my comfort zone and that I've learned
- 1:25:27Speaker 1: a new skill set and that I've challenged myself. Like
- 1:25:29Speaker 1: he loves those types of experiences in life, and like
- 1:25:32Speaker 1: fundamentally he loves especially I think the hunt that we
- 1:25:37Speaker 1: did kind of near our home, Like he loves that
- 1:25:39Speaker 1: land so much, um, and we spend so much time
- 1:25:42Speaker 1: there that the beauty of like being able to connect
- 1:25:46Speaker 1: with an animal that has spent time living on that
- 1:25:49Speaker 1: land and now us being fortunate enough to be able
- 1:25:52Speaker 1: to harvest that animal and not only eating ourselves, but
- 1:25:57Speaker 1: we shared a little bit of it with our neighbors
- 1:25:59Speaker 1: and and just like they loved it, and and and
- 1:26:02Speaker 1: my neighbor especially um uh. The wife is not like
- 1:26:08Speaker 1: typically a big medicine fan historically, and she was raving
- 1:26:12Speaker 1: about how delicious it was and she made some for
- 1:26:15Speaker 1: her grandkids and just that's something that is like just
- 1:26:19Speaker 1: magnificently special. So will um do you guys, do you
- 1:26:23Speaker 1: still call me boyfriend? You call mer fiance? I mean whatever,
- 1:26:26Speaker 1: it's all wanted the same or you gotta ring? Yeah,
- 1:26:32Speaker 1: I realize that. Yeah, um um, the guy you're getting
- 1:26:39Speaker 1: married to, does he will he initiate? Will he like
- 1:26:43Speaker 1: come home let's say you're gone or whatever? Would he
- 1:26:45Speaker 1: come home? Like th awesome out? Absolutely? So he's in there.
- 1:26:48Speaker 1: Oh yeah, totally. He said to me like today he
- 1:26:52Speaker 1: was like, I'm gonna take some meat now I think
- 1:26:53Speaker 1: I'm going to do this with it. I want to
- 1:26:55Speaker 1: make some chili this weekend. Oh he's super into it. Yeah,
- 1:26:58Speaker 1: he loves He'll go dig around the freezer of what
- 1:27:00Speaker 1: everything says? Well, and it was we haven't ground up though, No,
- 1:27:04Speaker 1: we need to do that because I'd love to have
- 1:27:06Speaker 1: some ground. But he was very grateful to have the
- 1:27:10Speaker 1: experience with you guys in terms of like being a
- 1:27:12Speaker 1: part of you know, butchering and being a part of
- 1:27:15Speaker 1: that whole process versus me coming home and telling him
- 1:27:18Speaker 1: about it. He enjoyed that a lot. You got to
- 1:27:20Speaker 1: grind your ground up though, Yeah, I gotta do that too.
- 1:27:23Speaker 1: We get a grind. It's so fast, I run do
- 1:27:26Speaker 1: we grind it. We got a grinder that does like
- 1:27:29Speaker 1: it's like six pounds a minute, no joke, I mean
- 1:27:31Speaker 1: just grind and then to fill the bags, I put
- 1:27:36Speaker 1: in a sausage stuffer and we put in those polly bags.
- 1:27:40Speaker 1: It's just like the ice of dread. We used to
- 1:27:42Speaker 1: have a hand crank grinder and just like, you know,
- 1:27:44Speaker 1: I was like, yeah, I got a grind to me now.
- 1:27:47Speaker 1: I just like it takes longer to clean and grinder
- 1:27:50Speaker 1: than the grind. Yeah, you know, clean Like the cleanup
- 1:27:54Speaker 1: is more arduous than the actual process. It's more like
- 1:27:57Speaker 1: it's like a thing where you got to have some
- 1:27:58Speaker 1: stuff you have to clean up with what it feels,
- 1:28:00Speaker 1: it's very fast. We just do it, and then we
- 1:28:02Speaker 1: got the Harlander hog and Beans the pig. I still
- 1:28:05Speaker 1: got a little bit of No, I don't have any
- 1:28:06Speaker 1: more Beans the pig. What was I don't know, Beans
- 1:28:09Speaker 1: the pig. That's just a whole story. Wait is this
- 1:28:13Speaker 1: the Colorado one? Yeah, I'll tell you. I had a moment.
- 1:28:18Speaker 1: We're getting ready, were the guy that raised a pig,
- 1:28:21Speaker 1: and um, we had some camera guys with us, and
- 1:28:24Speaker 1: we're getting ready to kill the pig. And I said,
- 1:28:27Speaker 1: you know, don't film killing the pig because we had
- 1:28:30Speaker 1: to be present for the killing of a farm hog.
- 1:28:34Speaker 1: And then I said to him, in fact, set those
- 1:28:37Speaker 1: cameras down on the ground. Oh man, that was good
- 1:28:39Speaker 1: that I did that. That's good. Yeah, that's good. Killing
- 1:28:43Speaker 1: fim animals it's not a easy thing. They're resilient. It's
- 1:28:48Speaker 1: just I guess i've ever seen one. They just don't
- 1:28:51Speaker 1: have any chances of getting away. Yeah, well he Bean's
- 1:28:55Speaker 1: almost got away. Till um. Good nice job Tracy Samson
- 1:29:06Speaker 1: with Ocale, it was that was our second hunt. Actually,
- 1:29:10Speaker 1: how did it come? How did it come about? The
- 1:29:11Speaker 1: U and Okale? It became like hunting partners. I think
- 1:29:16Speaker 1: I just I don't even remember Honestly, I think what
- 1:29:18Speaker 1: happened was like I approached him and it was just
- 1:29:20Speaker 1: like I need a better understanding of like what these
- 1:29:22Speaker 1: guys are doing. Like I'm sending these guys out, you know,
- 1:29:25Speaker 1: you all out on these meter hunts, and I'm helping
- 1:29:29Speaker 1: with the preparations and everything. And I was like, I
- 1:29:31Speaker 1: just I just want to know. I want to know.
- 1:29:33Speaker 1: And also I kind of have this goal for myself
- 1:29:35Speaker 1: like every year I want to learn something new we'll
- 1:29:37Speaker 1: be can provide another example last year was mountain biking,
- 1:29:42Speaker 1: learning something new. Is that what you mean? Yeah? So
- 1:29:44Speaker 1: in this year was hunting also just like shooting a
- 1:29:47Speaker 1: gun in general. You got your eyeball on next year,
- 1:29:50Speaker 1: what is it like what I want to do for
- 1:29:53Speaker 1: next year? Um? I think I want to learn how
- 1:29:55Speaker 1: to go like hot waterfowl because man duck or taste. Yeah,
- 1:30:01Speaker 1: dang right, Okay, So so he was you got okay
- 1:30:03Speaker 1: go on, Yeah, and I wanted to learn just to
- 1:30:06Speaker 1: understand it because of works exactly fit into your personal
- 1:30:10Speaker 1: plan totally. Yeah. And then I also just I have
- 1:30:13Speaker 1: this whole like life goal of just kind of like
- 1:30:15Speaker 1: reducing my waist and ideally like providing things more for
- 1:30:18Speaker 1: myself and like, you know, just not having to go
- 1:30:21Speaker 1: with the grocery store as much for meat and whatever.
- 1:30:22Speaker 1: So that's been a plan too, So it was kind
- 1:30:25Speaker 1: of a natural progression. But then it just kind of happened.
- 1:30:28Speaker 1: Like Cal was like okay, or like Yanni showed up.
- 1:30:31Speaker 1: He's like, here's a gun, and I was like, okay,
- 1:30:33Speaker 1: we're going out this weekend. And I was like what, okay, fine.
- 1:30:37Speaker 1: I was like, I don't even know how to pack
- 1:30:38Speaker 1: for this type of staff showed up here, Yes, what
- 1:30:47Speaker 1: is this for? Like it was like the bullet comes
- 1:30:50Speaker 1: out this end. Good look. But like I turned to Maggie.
- 1:30:56Speaker 1: Maggie let me all of her first light gear because
- 1:30:58Speaker 1: I was like, I don't have anything, Like I don't
- 1:31:00Speaker 1: even know what to wear. I'm afraid I don't have
- 1:31:02Speaker 1: the right layers. Like you were out there and borrow
- 1:31:07Speaker 1: You're out there and borrow something, borrow something blue. I
- 1:31:10Speaker 1: was happy to share. But that was my first hunt,
- 1:31:12Speaker 1: I should say, my first hunt with Cal. I didn't
- 1:31:17Speaker 1: even like I just I practiced just hiking with the gun,
- 1:31:20Speaker 1: like I didn't even bother thinking I was going to
- 1:31:23Speaker 1: shoot something. Like I went out there and I was
- 1:31:24Speaker 1: just like, I just want to know what this is about. Um.
- 1:31:28Speaker 1: And it was great. I mean, it's a great experience
- 1:31:31Speaker 1: because I gotta, you know, set my sights on some bull,
- 1:31:34Speaker 1: young bull elk. We just saw a ton of them
- 1:31:36Speaker 1: out where we were and just practice sneaking. Yeah, this
- 1:31:39Speaker 1: is like in a very limited draw unit. And Kyle's
- 1:31:43Speaker 1: body was trying to find a smoker, which he eventually
- 1:31:46Speaker 1: did not that trip, but at the end of November,
- 1:31:49Speaker 1: so you want to get in one, yeah he did. Um.
- 1:31:53Speaker 1: And you know, it was just that that first trip
- 1:31:55Speaker 1: was just a learning experience and just trying to get
- 1:31:57Speaker 1: out there. And I was just I don't know, I
- 1:32:01Speaker 1: was I just I came back and I was like, Okay,
- 1:32:03Speaker 1: when when can we go again? And you were doing
- 1:32:04Speaker 1: some dry firing. Cal was saying dry firing. Yeah, I
- 1:32:07Speaker 1: mean he had me setting up on tree limbs, He
- 1:32:09Speaker 1: had me setting up on rocks, on backpacks, like he
- 1:32:12Speaker 1: put me in every situation. Probably cool. Yeah, Well, I
- 1:32:16Speaker 1: mean in the second trip even more, like I was
- 1:32:18Speaker 1: literally looking at a buck that was downhill with me
- 1:32:21Speaker 1: and like my face was down in my head or
- 1:32:23Speaker 1: my head and my feet were up on the like
- 1:32:27Speaker 1: above me. You know, like he had me everywhere. Um,
- 1:32:31Speaker 1: but yeah, I just I loved it so much and
- 1:32:33Speaker 1: so I was like, when can we go again? And we, um,
- 1:32:36Speaker 1: you know, made it work right before Thanksgiving because I
- 1:32:38Speaker 1: was the only other time that we could do. It
- 1:32:40Speaker 1: almost came with me. I almost came with you guys,
- 1:32:42Speaker 1: and I was like, I don't really think I want
- 1:32:44Speaker 1: to hunt four days in a row, but yeah, quite yet,
- 1:32:48Speaker 1: two days is enough. Cale talked about on Cal's Weekend review.
- 1:32:53Speaker 1: Cal touched on Hunting with You, and Cal had a
- 1:32:57Speaker 1: comment where, um, you saw all the importance of mentoring people,
- 1:33:02Speaker 1: and he mentioned that he doesn't like when people say like, oh,
- 1:33:06Speaker 1: I got him his first year. Yeah, he doesn't like
- 1:33:09Speaker 1: that I got her her first year because I think
- 1:33:12Speaker 1: I said that, Yeah he tried. He goes, you should
- 1:33:16Speaker 1: probably be trying to create a scenario where someone feels
- 1:33:19Speaker 1: like they got it, Which is true though, because you
- 1:33:22Speaker 1: need to take full responsibility for that thing that you
- 1:33:25Speaker 1: just shot, So you should always like, I think that's
- 1:33:28Speaker 1: the right the right approach, Like I want to take
- 1:33:30Speaker 1: full responsibility for it totally. Um. Anyway, so we went
- 1:33:35Speaker 1: on that second um hunt in mid November, and we
- 1:33:39Speaker 1: went over to like, I don't know honestly where we were,
- 1:33:44Speaker 1: but we're on some BLM and state Land. It's like,
- 1:33:46Speaker 1: but a blind bold on me and take me a
- 1:33:48Speaker 1: middle nowhere in Canada. You're somewhere in Montana. Even if
- 1:33:58Speaker 1: you know exactly, I like that appro yeah right, yeah,
- 1:34:02Speaker 1: I really don't know. That's what I just kept telling people.
- 1:34:05Speaker 1: Wanted to tell you, I couldn't, but I mean it
- 1:34:09Speaker 1: was it was a great area. I mean that. So
- 1:34:12Speaker 1: we like woke up whatever five in the morning. I
- 1:34:14Speaker 1: guess what we're supposed to do. I want to go hunting.
- 1:34:18Speaker 1: It was dark. Guy, I never actually ever saw the
- 1:34:23Speaker 1: view from the truck because we were either waking up
- 1:34:25Speaker 1: super early or getting back super late. So gorgeous there,
- 1:34:30Speaker 1: but I don't know what the view from the chuck
- 1:34:31Speaker 1: looked like. Like, so that's what this place looks like.
- 1:34:35Speaker 1: I was like, man, I bet that's pretty up there
- 1:34:37Speaker 1: from the truck. You mean at camp? Yeah, I camp,
- 1:34:43Speaker 1: yeah every day, which was only two days, um and yeah,
- 1:34:48Speaker 1: so he just got up. I mean it was pretty windy,
- 1:34:51Speaker 1: but then once we got down in the valley it
- 1:34:53Speaker 1: was fine. At one point Cal was like, hand me
- 1:34:55Speaker 1: your gun and I was like okay, and he's and
- 1:34:57Speaker 1: it's like dark, you know, and he's like, figure out
- 1:35:00Speaker 1: how to get up this this cliff and I was like,
- 1:35:02Speaker 1: what are you talking about? Like I can't even see
- 1:35:04Speaker 1: what we're looking at, and so I'm like feeling around
- 1:35:06Speaker 1: blindly and I finally find some sort of like stick
- 1:35:09Speaker 1: thing and I get myself up there and it's like, okay,
- 1:35:11Speaker 1: now you can get up here with both the guns.
- 1:35:13Speaker 1: Like um, but yeah, we're just you know, hiking up
- 1:35:18Speaker 1: and down everywhere. I don't know. And that first day, um,
- 1:35:23Speaker 1: we saw I mean we saw a ton of deer
- 1:35:26Speaker 1: first of all, like so many deer, a lot of bucks,
- 1:35:29Speaker 1: a lot of four keys, and we're kind of watching
- 1:35:31Speaker 1: this one specific bull but he was on private. I
- 1:35:34Speaker 1: don't know why we just watched him for a while.
- 1:35:37Speaker 1: I'm sorry buck, Yeah, um, I don't know why we
- 1:35:40Speaker 1: watched him for so long. He was well yeah, so
- 1:35:43Speaker 1: Cal like left me to watch these two bucks. He
- 1:35:46Speaker 1: went to go poop and then and he was like,
- 1:35:50Speaker 1: oh my god, we gotta go find this guy. And
- 1:35:52Speaker 1: I was like okay, and so like we go and
- 1:35:54Speaker 1: watch this guy. He's like telling me to like this buck, sorry,
- 1:35:59Speaker 1: this ale Neil dear and so we're looking at him,
- 1:36:05Speaker 1: and the worst part that was Cal's calls like, Okay,
- 1:36:09Speaker 1: now you gotta go down there and you gotta find
- 1:36:11Speaker 1: a better position to go watch him. So like I
- 1:36:13Speaker 1: go and do this, and then he follows me, like,
- 1:36:15Speaker 1: you know, ten minutes later, he's like, you did that
- 1:36:17Speaker 1: all wrong. I'm like, yeah, I know, like I am
- 1:36:21Speaker 1: horrible at sneaking. I don't understand it. It's not my blood.
- 1:36:24Speaker 1: I just like I'm just kind of like this is
- 1:36:25Speaker 1: really like I feel like this is like role playing
- 1:36:27Speaker 1: right now and just like not good at it. Um
- 1:36:31Speaker 1: But you know, eventually, I mean we end up calling
- 1:36:33Speaker 1: that guy dick head because he just did not get
- 1:36:35Speaker 1: off private land. He was like obsessed with this one
- 1:36:38Speaker 1: lady who was just doing whatever she felt like doing.
- 1:36:41Speaker 1: I don't know, she had her own, you know, game plan,
- 1:36:44Speaker 1: and so she was not putting out she did not
- 1:36:48Speaker 1: and um so Cal kind of like wandered off for
- 1:36:51Speaker 1: a while, and problem I think he was fine. I
- 1:37:00Speaker 1: don't know, very regular out there. Did you guys have
- 1:37:02Speaker 1: taco bell like we did the night before we went
- 1:37:04Speaker 1: out and was driving and pulling over and throwing up
- 1:37:09Speaker 1: did yeah, yeah, the guy would be last. I honestly
- 1:37:19Speaker 1: don't even remember what we ate. But he was fine.
- 1:37:21Speaker 1: He's just going off doing little errands looking around. He
- 1:37:24Speaker 1: was very healthy, very regular. Anyways. Yeah, and then he
- 1:37:28Speaker 1: came back and was like, oh, let's go this way.
- 1:37:31Speaker 1: I don't know why I'm whispering, Let's go this way.
- 1:37:33Speaker 1: There's a bunch of like you're back in the moment. Yeah,
- 1:37:37Speaker 1: deer out in this one. I don't know, some other
- 1:37:40Speaker 1: area behind us. And so we like left our bags
- 1:37:43Speaker 1: and every like we literally left everything. Never leave your bag.
- 1:37:46Speaker 1: Never dropped the pack, no apocalypse now, never leave the boat.
- 1:37:49Speaker 1: You've been just you can lame this on cal Okay, never.
- 1:37:55Speaker 1: I'm just telling you, I don't care what he does.
- 1:37:57Speaker 1: Never leave your bag. Okay, moving on the rationale for
- 1:38:03Speaker 1: that one thing. The moment I left my bag and
- 1:38:10Speaker 1: I didn't have everything that, yeah, they're like, oh, in fact,
- 1:38:14Speaker 1: moved again. Yeah, totally. And then you don't get a
- 1:38:17Speaker 1: good hit on it. And then a lady you're like, oh,
- 1:38:20Speaker 1: here comes a little rain squad. I wish I had
- 1:38:21Speaker 1: my rain jack. Or it's like two in the morning
- 1:38:24Speaker 1: and you finally find it. That's totally accurate, and it
- 1:38:29Speaker 1: was like I think it was some bipod with me.
- 1:38:33Speaker 1: So it was just like once, but it was kind
- 1:38:34Speaker 1: of like I said, it was kind of fun though,
- 1:38:36Speaker 1: because we went to this one in area. There's like
- 1:38:38Speaker 1: tons of juniper around and we were like in the
- 1:38:41Speaker 1: trees and we were sneaking up on um just like
- 1:38:45Speaker 1: I said, tons of deer, tons of does and a
- 1:38:47Speaker 1: few four keys and so we're looking at them through
- 1:38:49Speaker 1: the trees and he's like, okay, like I want you
- 1:38:52Speaker 1: to look at that for ky and you know, see
- 1:38:55Speaker 1: if you can get a good position. And so we
- 1:38:57Speaker 1: practice a lot of different positions like prone on a tree,
- 1:39:01Speaker 1: limb again on some juniper, which is all amazing. And
- 1:39:06Speaker 1: I just never felt comfortable in any of the positions
- 1:39:09Speaker 1: at all. And Um he was just like, yeah, that's good,
- 1:39:12Speaker 1: just like you like are just like kind of learning
- 1:39:15Speaker 1: and knowing that this isn't the right time or moment whatever.
- 1:39:19Speaker 1: He didn't say what's the problem name, No, he didn't.
- 1:39:23Speaker 1: He was very patient. Was there ever any impatience? Um,
- 1:39:28Speaker 1: maybe on my end, but not really on his. I
- 1:39:32Speaker 1: know for a fact that Joe Frigno, Joe Ferronado had
- 1:39:36Speaker 1: feelings of impatience, lots of them. That was a squirrelingwithstanding
- 1:39:41Speaker 1: and didn't communicate. He communicated them to me, but he
- 1:39:45Speaker 1: also last night he communicated them to me too, immediately after,
- 1:39:52Speaker 1: but he didn't say, what's the problem. He didn't I think,
- 1:39:57Speaker 1: I say, what exactly is the problem? We know the problem?
- 1:40:10Speaker 1: What exactly? So he had you like, so, let me
- 1:40:16Speaker 1: get this straight. You see a forky and you guys
- 1:40:19Speaker 1: are trophy hunting, so you're just practiced, you're driving trophy hunting.
- 1:40:22Speaker 1: We're just hunting at this point because I don't know so,
- 1:40:26Speaker 1: but why were you not the forky you were looking at? You?
- 1:40:29Speaker 1: Were you had intent to kill the forky? Yeah? Okay,
- 1:40:32Speaker 1: I'm sorry. Yeah, Yeah, it's just I just didn't feel
- 1:40:34Speaker 1: comfortable and like he was moving a lot. He was
- 1:40:37Speaker 1: following another lady and they were going everywhere, and I
- 1:40:40Speaker 1: just I just so the intent was to get him, yes,
- 1:40:42Speaker 1: but you couldn't get it you could get it done.
- 1:40:44Speaker 1: Didn't feel as our bear hunter friend said, you could
- 1:40:46Speaker 1: not get it done, could not get it done. And
- 1:40:48Speaker 1: that was kind of the end of that day. So
- 1:40:50Speaker 1: then come the night, were you disappointed? Were you like, oh, bummer,
- 1:40:55Speaker 1: you know, The only reason why I felt a little
- 1:40:57Speaker 1: disappointed is because I wanted Hole to go hunting the
- 1:41:01Speaker 1: next day and the next because the first day he
- 1:41:04Speaker 1: brought his gun, I think he had was like on
- 1:41:07Speaker 1: a trip right before that. Oh yeah, another like BLM
- 1:41:11Speaker 1: trip that he took, and he misfired a couple of times.
- 1:41:14Speaker 1: So he was like wanting to figure out what was
- 1:41:16Speaker 1: going on? What do you mean he misfired? He missed?
- 1:41:20Speaker 1: He oh sorry, yeah, sorry, not mispired? Um or is
- 1:41:24Speaker 1: that what it is? Like he shot at whatever deer
- 1:41:28Speaker 1: and he missed like twice at the same cow. He's
- 1:41:32Speaker 1: the oh not this trip? No, Yeah, So I wanted
- 1:41:37Speaker 1: I was disappointed because I was like, I wanted him
- 1:41:39Speaker 1: to get that figured out. And I mean, clearly that's
- 1:41:42Speaker 1: not his worry about is like mine. I'm like, man,
- 1:41:45Speaker 1: I don't want you to wait for me anyways. Um
- 1:41:48Speaker 1: So yeah, next day, same old thing basically, and just
- 1:41:53Speaker 1: kind of got up to a point and um as
- 1:41:55Speaker 1: the sun rose were glassing and saw a bunch of
- 1:41:59Speaker 1: deer again. Funding all this are you checking something off?
- 1:42:02Speaker 1: You'll checklist? Hate it all? Know? I had an amazing time,
- 1:42:05Speaker 1: like like the minute by minute of it. Yes, Oh,
- 1:42:09Speaker 1: my gosh, and I really like, I love watching the animals,
- 1:42:12Speaker 1: learning about the behavior I didn't understand before going out there,
- 1:42:15Speaker 1: Like when you're hunting bucks, you're hunting does and you're
- 1:42:18Speaker 1: watching for their reactions and like what they're looking for,
- 1:42:21Speaker 1: and I just I learned so much about that and
- 1:42:24Speaker 1: that was my favorite part, was like not looking for
- 1:42:27Speaker 1: the buck, it was looking for the does. Yeah. I
- 1:42:29Speaker 1: think one of the funniest things is when you're hunting
- 1:42:31Speaker 1: and there's good running activity and you see dose staring
- 1:42:39Speaker 1: in an almost sort of like agitated way, and you're like, God,
- 1:42:43Speaker 1: do I want to know what they're staring at? Totally
- 1:42:47Speaker 1: that's how I felt. And it seemed like tents up
- 1:42:49Speaker 1: and they're looking. You're like what what? That was the
- 1:42:52Speaker 1: coolest thing. He was like, cal, we're looking at some
- 1:42:55Speaker 1: I don't know, some does out in this little opening
- 1:42:58Speaker 1: amongst the trees. And he was like, they're looking into
- 1:43:00Speaker 1: those trees and I was like what, And he brings
- 1:43:02Speaker 1: out what are those rack things called dry pod? No, no,
- 1:43:07Speaker 1: my kids. I offered to go find it for you, um,
- 1:43:16Speaker 1: but he brought that out and then, like I don't know,
- 1:43:18Speaker 1: minutes later, a buck comes out of the trees, and
- 1:43:20Speaker 1: I's like, that is the coolest thing. Have a rattle
- 1:43:24Speaker 1: like the little rattle pack green thing. Yeah, rack, dude,
- 1:43:28Speaker 1: you can't. I tried. My kid lost mine. I couldn't
- 1:43:31Speaker 1: find the sons of bitches anywhere anywhere on Amazon. There
- 1:43:36Speaker 1: are other places besides. I just ran out of steam.
- 1:43:38Speaker 1: But he's killing me. Man, when snow melts, you're going
- 1:43:42Speaker 1: to find my stuff. I offered to go find it
- 1:43:44Speaker 1: before and you said no. The rattle bag. I think
- 1:43:50Speaker 1: it's is it, dude? Things loud inhale. I need to
- 1:43:55Speaker 1: find that. I don't know what's killing men. I bought
- 1:43:58Speaker 1: some other stupid rack. It's like, anyways, go on. Okay,
- 1:44:04Speaker 1: so he's trying to he's going to rattle the buck.
- 1:44:05Speaker 1: You're trying to get to take a look. There wasn't effective. Yeah,
- 1:44:08Speaker 1: I was effective. He came out and where what's that website?
- 1:44:15Speaker 1: Sent to me? This Google? Yeah? I was that founded
- 1:44:22Speaker 1: on the Google. Um. Yeah, and I don't know. I'll say,
- 1:44:28Speaker 1: is about this day because it could go on forever?
- 1:44:30Speaker 1: Is that I probably had about two or three shots
- 1:44:34Speaker 1: before I got my buck that I should have taken
- 1:44:37Speaker 1: the shot. I think at least definitely too, but and
- 1:44:40Speaker 1: one of them I impatience from kel no impatience. So
- 1:44:44Speaker 1: he's just like whatever, what does that it get away?
- 1:44:47Speaker 1: What happened was like one of them, Um, I don't know.
- 1:44:53Speaker 1: It was really cool. I gotta kind of set up
- 1:44:55Speaker 1: on this dough that was standing stick on this mountain side,
- 1:44:58Speaker 1: and that was great. She was staying there for like
- 1:45:01Speaker 1: ten minutes and I was laying there prone and I
- 1:45:04Speaker 1: was like, okay, I could have shot the dickens out
- 1:45:06Speaker 1: of her. Yeah, I totally could have. Um. I was like, how,
- 1:45:09Speaker 1: like tell me where I need to set my gun,
- 1:45:13Speaker 1: like my sights, and like once he we did that,
- 1:45:16Speaker 1: I was like, okay, I feel comfortable now. I feel
- 1:45:19Speaker 1: like I can I can do this like whole shooting thing. Um.
- 1:45:23Speaker 1: And then the buck came out and he was moving
- 1:45:25Speaker 1: and I didn't feel comfortable. But then right behind us
- 1:45:28Speaker 1: was another buck that came out, so it's like we
- 1:45:29Speaker 1: whipped around, turned around. I got ready to shoot that one,
- 1:45:33Speaker 1: and I, um, you know how it's like safety and
- 1:45:38Speaker 1: then there was that middle thing and then it's fire safety.
- 1:45:42Speaker 1: So I thought I had put it all the way
- 1:45:44Speaker 1: up to fire and I only got it up to
- 1:45:45Speaker 1: that middle port because I went to go shoot and
- 1:45:48Speaker 1: nothing happened. I couldn't and I was like, there's piece
- 1:45:51Speaker 1: of sh what the and um, yeah, that one I
- 1:45:57Speaker 1: definitely could have gotten. And that would have been a
- 1:45:59Speaker 1: great one because it was about ten am. Shut up
- 1:46:03Speaker 1: at ten am, and it would have been nice if
- 1:46:04Speaker 1: I had gotten that one, because then I could have
- 1:46:06Speaker 1: probably done the whole like cutting it up and learned
- 1:46:08Speaker 1: all of that. But that didn't happen, so we kind
- 1:46:11Speaker 1: of had to keep hunting for the rest of the day.
- 1:46:13Speaker 1: And it wasn't until the very last hour of light.
- 1:46:16Speaker 1: And let me tell you a lot of other things
- 1:46:17Speaker 1: are going on a lot of other bucks, a lot
- 1:46:19Speaker 1: of other shooting situations that we tried for. I don't
- 1:46:21Speaker 1: know we did. We had so much up until this
- 1:46:24Speaker 1: buck last hour of light. And um, it was because
- 1:46:28Speaker 1: we were following this one buck that was like super nice.
- 1:46:31Speaker 1: But um, I think Cal say no, like he was
- 1:46:35Speaker 1: just handsome. Um, like I think he was, as Cal
- 1:46:38Speaker 1: called a monster buck or whatever, and um, we were
- 1:46:44Speaker 1: following him. Um, and that took us over onto state
- 1:46:49Speaker 1: Land and I honestly like, don't I had to have
- 1:46:53Speaker 1: Cal tell me this whole story again after it all
- 1:46:56Speaker 1: happened like after you were black yeah, blackout Basically. I
- 1:47:01Speaker 1: was like, once we got in the car and like
- 1:47:03Speaker 1: started driving away, I was like, so what happened? Um?
- 1:47:09Speaker 1: It was like a night of drinking. Yeah, like last night.
- 1:47:13Speaker 1: So he saw a dough which I never saw. That
- 1:47:17Speaker 1: was also a major theme of the trip is he
- 1:47:19Speaker 1: saw a lot of things that I never saw and
- 1:47:25Speaker 1: solid dough. So he was like, we need to sneak
- 1:47:27Speaker 1: up on this dough. And he's like there's antlers like
- 1:47:30Speaker 1: over this ridge and like that guy doesn't see us.
- 1:47:33Speaker 1: And I was like okay, um, and so we're like sneaking, sneaking,
- 1:47:37Speaker 1: and we spooked the dough, but we kind of keep
- 1:47:41Speaker 1: sneaking because the Um, I guess what happened was the
- 1:47:44Speaker 1: buck drove the dough right in front of us. And
- 1:47:49Speaker 1: it happened so fast. It was just like Cal set
- 1:47:52Speaker 1: his pack down, I put my gun on the pack,
- 1:47:55Speaker 1: and I um like waited there and Cal goes, do
- 1:47:58Speaker 1: you see them? And appair only I got snippy and
- 1:48:00Speaker 1: I was like, no, I don't see them. They're only
- 1:48:03Speaker 1: like forty yards in front of us, guys, so they're
- 1:48:06Speaker 1: not far though you're looking farther than and then they
- 1:48:12Speaker 1: can be literally in front of the literally in front
- 1:48:15Speaker 1: of us. You know, you know, you know the games
- 1:48:19Speaker 1: people play. I never read it. I believe, so there's
- 1:48:23Speaker 1: a thing. There's a game people play. I think it's
- 1:48:26Speaker 1: explaining this where um, it's just about what it's kind
- 1:48:32Speaker 1: of like how horrible people are and the games played.
- 1:48:34Speaker 1: But there's a thing that happens where like I come
- 1:48:36Speaker 1: to Tracy and I'm like, Tracy, I'm having, you know,
- 1:48:39Speaker 1: really a difficult time hitting my sales quota at work
- 1:48:43Speaker 1: right And she goes, well, maybe you could try working
- 1:48:47Speaker 1: late a few days, or maybe you could try, you know,
- 1:48:50Speaker 1: a different approach, And then I attack her. That's one
- 1:48:54Speaker 1: of the games You'll never like, what do you know?
- 1:48:57Speaker 1: You'll never understand. It's more of the things we do
- 1:49:00Speaker 1: as humans. So you were doing I did that to
- 1:49:03Speaker 1: come exactly. I'm not ashamed of it. I was telling him.
- 1:49:07Speaker 1: I was like, when I get comfortable with people, I
- 1:49:09Speaker 1: either like get snippy or I don't talk to you.
- 1:49:13Speaker 1: Because there are times where he'd be like, so, how
- 1:49:15Speaker 1: are you feeling. I haven't heard from you for a while,
- 1:49:17Speaker 1: And I was just like, I like talk a lot
- 1:49:19Speaker 1: less like when I'm hanging out with people, like I
- 1:49:21Speaker 1: love silence, especially when you're outside. But um, yeah, so
- 1:49:26Speaker 1: it's just it all happened really fast in the dough.
- 1:49:29Speaker 1: I finally saw the dough and she was staring straight
- 1:49:31Speaker 1: at me like, hey, hey, you know this guy is
- 1:49:33Speaker 1: coming after me. I'd love for you to get rid
- 1:49:35Speaker 1: of him. And um, so I just kind of um
- 1:49:40Speaker 1: set up behind her and the buck like walked right
- 1:49:44Speaker 1: into my sights, yeah, and looked straight at me, and
- 1:49:48Speaker 1: um took the shot. I was like on my knees
- 1:49:51Speaker 1: and yeah, the the gun was on the backpack, so
- 1:49:55Speaker 1: it's upright. You were on your knees. Yeah, I was
- 1:49:58Speaker 1: kneeling like, yeah, the back picks ending up the kind
- 1:50:03Speaker 1: through the lungs, but I always went through the front
- 1:50:05Speaker 1: shoulder too, because there's a lot of trauma to that.
- 1:50:07Speaker 1: So it piled right up. Yeah. Yeah. And emotions, Yeah,
- 1:50:14Speaker 1: you get like emotional, Yes, so Pelonso got emotional. Oh no,
- 1:50:19Speaker 1: I'm sure, how can you not, right, Rookie of the Year.
- 1:50:23Speaker 1: I was in denial though, like you wanted, you were
- 1:50:25Speaker 1: denying that it was dead. No, I was in denial
- 1:50:28Speaker 1: that it was my dear and you know, what I
- 1:50:29Speaker 1: told Mark Kenyon this you thought someone else got it? Yeah,
- 1:50:32Speaker 1: I was like, oh no, this is this is someone
- 1:50:34Speaker 1: else's dear. This isn't my dear, but you're only forty
- 1:50:37Speaker 1: yards away from it. I don't understand why I felt
- 1:50:40Speaker 1: this space to even I'm not trying to make sense
- 1:50:41Speaker 1: of it. But no, Mark Kenyon said, he said he
- 1:50:45Speaker 1: felt the same exact thing. He was like, no, it's
- 1:50:47Speaker 1: not my dear. So you guys kind of went like
- 1:50:49Speaker 1: a little bit insane for a minute. No, it's cold
- 1:50:53Speaker 1: like the stages of grieving denial. I think is the
- 1:50:58Speaker 1: first stage. You had a that there must be another
- 1:51:01Speaker 1: explanation for this deer laying right by where I just
- 1:51:06Speaker 1: shot at a deer. Yes, I'm okay, so let me
- 1:51:12Speaker 1: tell you. He someone I've never had someone expresses to me.
- 1:51:15Speaker 1: So I shot him. I was looking at my scope
- 1:51:18Speaker 1: the whole time, and I don't know why I did this,
- 1:51:21Speaker 1: but I like immediately put another bullet in the chamber,
- 1:51:24Speaker 1: and that's next year's that's next year's lesson. Okay. Yeah,
- 1:51:30Speaker 1: I literally was just like I shot him, and I
- 1:51:32Speaker 1: just stayed in my scope, did another chamber whatever. I
- 1:51:36Speaker 1: was like, Yeah, I'm like a natural, like I got
- 1:51:39Speaker 1: to get ready to shoot, Chamber did another I know
- 1:51:42Speaker 1: what I'm talking about here, and then I felt the
- 1:51:46Speaker 1: ice running through my name chamber, and then Cal was
- 1:51:54Speaker 1: the one was like, we need to go find this deer.
- 1:51:57Speaker 1: And he was like, take the bullet out of the chamber.
- 1:52:02Speaker 1: I don't want to um and hand me the rifle.
- 1:52:09Speaker 1: I wonder if I did, but yeah, so I was like,
- 1:52:12Speaker 1: come on, we gotta go find it. And I was
- 1:52:14Speaker 1: like okay, okay, and then we, you know, run up
- 1:52:18Speaker 1: a little bit to where it was and I'm of
- 1:52:21Speaker 1: course just like standing there like what happened? I don't know.
- 1:52:24Speaker 1: And then he's like, oh, look that way, and then
- 1:52:26Speaker 1: there was like the dear, my dear, just probably like
- 1:52:30Speaker 1: twenty yards in front of us or something and just
- 1:52:32Speaker 1: laying there dead. And I was just in shock. I
- 1:52:36Speaker 1: was like, that was there probably the whole time, right, Yeah.
- 1:52:43Speaker 1: I was like he just like laid like walked over
- 1:52:45Speaker 1: there and just laid down and ended up expiring but
- 1:52:50Speaker 1: ended up being my dear. I didn't even So that
- 1:52:53Speaker 1: was the other thing I had seen Maggie's photo as
- 1:52:55Speaker 1: I was driving out to this area with Cal and
- 1:53:00Speaker 1: your dear had blood like you saw blood and my
- 1:53:03Speaker 1: dear had no blood. So that was another reason why
- 1:53:05Speaker 1: I was like, this is not my dear. There's no blood,
- 1:53:07Speaker 1: like he just died peacefully, and UM, yeah, I got
- 1:53:13Speaker 1: you cal basically how to be like, this is your
- 1:53:15Speaker 1: sucking dear, uh, and I'm going to leave you alone
- 1:53:19Speaker 1: for a few minutes so you can be with it.
- 1:53:21Speaker 1: Mainly because I lost his first light first light prototype
- 1:53:25Speaker 1: jacket and find oh man as finds up putting Kevin
- 1:53:28Speaker 1: in a really awkward position. Looks like I'm doing some hiking. Um.
- 1:53:37Speaker 1: And so the moment that Kyle left, I I just
- 1:53:40Speaker 1: started crying and I just started talking to this dear
- 1:53:43Speaker 1: and I was just like trying to tell him is like,
- 1:53:45Speaker 1: so you know, like we put in a lot of effort.
- 1:53:47Speaker 1: You know my opinion, we put in a lot of effort,
- 1:53:50Speaker 1: Like you know, I just I want to tell you
- 1:53:53Speaker 1: how much I'm grateful for you and all this stuff.
- 1:53:54Speaker 1: I don't know. I was just very emotional at that moment.
- 1:53:57Speaker 1: Do you feel that if you were um murdered by
- 1:54:01Speaker 1: another person, uh, and you're you're dying and the person says,
- 1:54:08Speaker 1: you know, I want you to know, Um, I feel horrible,
- 1:54:13Speaker 1: but but very grateful for you. Do you know what
- 1:54:16Speaker 1: would you would you feel better about it? Or would
- 1:54:18Speaker 1: you would that piss like? Would that piss you off? More? Um? Well,
- 1:54:22Speaker 1: would it matter? Because then I'd be dead like two
- 1:54:24Speaker 1: seconds like that you had awareness of it, like, doesn't care?
- 1:54:28Speaker 1: What does it change anything? No, it's not for the deer.
- 1:54:31Speaker 1: Probably it's probably more for me at that point. I
- 1:54:34Speaker 1: don't know how I would respond if also now is
- 1:54:37Speaker 1: walked to woods and and then work so hard. It
- 1:54:41Speaker 1: works so hard to find you, Steve. I've got great
- 1:54:44Speaker 1: plans for your forearms and your calves and gonna make
- 1:54:47Speaker 1: ashabuco Or would I be like, dude, it doesn't matter. Yeah,
- 1:54:51Speaker 1: I know it probably would be like I don't care anymore.
- 1:54:54Speaker 1: I'm dying. Um. But yeah, it was like I said,
- 1:54:58Speaker 1: as in that last hour of light, so um, we
- 1:55:02Speaker 1: had to get going. Yeah, what he mentioned it? But
- 1:55:05Speaker 1: why is that? Was it impending weather? Like? What was
- 1:55:07Speaker 1: the problem? The temperature was dropping, it started sleeping on us,
- 1:55:10Speaker 1: and we were definitely a lot further from the car
- 1:55:13Speaker 1: than I think he had wanted to be. Of course,
- 1:55:16Speaker 1: none of these things, I know. I'm just like going
- 1:55:18Speaker 1: on along for this ride, so I'm like, yeah, this
- 1:55:20Speaker 1: is great. So it's kind of a hard like a
- 1:55:21Speaker 1: hard out like maybe, I mean he made it very easy.
- 1:55:25Speaker 1: We stayed for the most part on the flat areas,
- 1:55:28Speaker 1: so we weren't doing a ton of climbing, so he
- 1:55:30Speaker 1: had to help you cut it up. Oh no, he did,
- 1:55:32Speaker 1: like all the cutting up. That was the thing. I
- 1:55:34Speaker 1: didn't get to learn anything about that because dark and
- 1:55:37Speaker 1: dark and rainy and cold. Ums when we got that
- 1:55:40Speaker 1: really nasty snowstorm, right, you guys were like, coming back
- 1:55:44Speaker 1: is Tuesday night? I don't know in the world. Yeah,
- 1:55:48Speaker 1: I was out of service. Have you been on to
- 1:55:52Speaker 1: eating your deer yet? Yeah? So I've had um a
- 1:55:57Speaker 1: bunch of the back leg and then I had the tongue.
- 1:56:00Speaker 1: Did you Um, did you bring any of it to
- 1:56:03Speaker 1: the holiday party? No? I brought potatoes. Potatoes. Those were good.
- 1:56:08Speaker 1: So you had the tongue in some of the back leg? Yep?
- 1:56:13Speaker 1: When you like when you leave for work in the morning,
- 1:56:15Speaker 1: do you pull some out to thought? Yeah? Exactly. Um,
- 1:56:20Speaker 1: I'll just I just try and plan ahead a little bit.
- 1:56:22Speaker 1: Have you shared it with your friends? Uh? No, not yet.
- 1:56:24Speaker 1: I really haven't been around so it's like I got
- 1:56:26Speaker 1: that deer. I left town like two days later and
- 1:56:30Speaker 1: then was gone for all the week of Thanksgiving, came back,
- 1:56:33Speaker 1: went to Michigan. So this is my first week in Montana,
- 1:56:36Speaker 1: and so I just I haven't had time to really
- 1:56:38Speaker 1: share anything. You didn't bring. You didn't bring you to
- 1:56:40Speaker 1: Thanksgiving dinner. I mean to bring home some for Christmas. Yeah,
- 1:56:45Speaker 1: the backstrap good deal? Um, and you think you might
- 1:56:49Speaker 1: give something to some friends possibly, Yeah, Well I'm bring
- 1:56:53Speaker 1: something else to give it to your friends. Well, I'm
- 1:56:56Speaker 1: gonna make jerky. That's my plan this weekend is to
- 1:56:58Speaker 1: make some jerky. I got brothers the hydrator, and um,
- 1:57:03Speaker 1: can I steal that meat slicer in the kitchen for
- 1:57:05Speaker 1: a weekend? You think it's not necessary, but sure? Can
- 1:57:09Speaker 1: I slice it super thin? I guess with my own knife? Yeah,
- 1:57:11Speaker 1: what you want to do is put a partial freeze
- 1:57:13Speaker 1: on it. Yeah, okay, let's set up and slice away.
- 1:57:18Speaker 1: You don't need to do that, but you can get
- 1:57:19Speaker 1: some nice slices like that. It makes it easier. It's
- 1:57:21Speaker 1: a lot easier to handle with the grain or against
- 1:57:25Speaker 1: the grain. I don't know what should I do. Pants
- 1:57:28Speaker 1: Man traditional jerky's with the grain really chewy? H What
- 1:57:32Speaker 1: do you like with okay? Where you like Johnnie across
- 1:57:37Speaker 1: the grain because it's it's easier to choose. Yeah, I
- 1:57:41Speaker 1: should say like, I like it all, man, I like
- 1:57:43Speaker 1: it's very different experience. Like you you're gonna have a
- 1:57:46Speaker 1: less of a cud. You have less of a cud
- 1:57:48Speaker 1: when you go across. You can work up pretty good
- 1:57:52Speaker 1: cud when you go with if there especially, you leave
- 1:57:54Speaker 1: a lot of Sydney. But somebody likes, oh you don't
- 1:58:00Speaker 1: want you don't want cuts. Yeah, you're jerky in a while, lady.
- 1:58:07Speaker 1: You got like a peace size hung white yeah and
- 1:58:11Speaker 1: stretched out and it's like a big ball piece of thread.
- 1:58:14Speaker 1: Yeah that's the cud. Yeah, so I'll go across the yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:58:23Speaker 1: We've had this conversation before. A lot of jerky now
- 1:58:26Speaker 1: and gas stations is um. You know, there's whole muscle jerky,
- 1:58:30Speaker 1: but there's a lot of jerky that's that's ground. You know.
- 1:58:33Speaker 1: You remember your brother recently started doing that. I thought
- 1:58:37Speaker 1: that stuff was good. Nothing wrong with it, man, nothing
- 1:58:39Speaker 1: wrong with it. No cud. It's easy to chew. But
- 1:58:43Speaker 1: like you know, I don't know, man, like for me,
- 1:58:45Speaker 1: if I had like one jerky, the rest of my
- 1:58:47Speaker 1: life's gonna be jerky. That's hole muscle with the grain,
- 1:58:53Speaker 1: and it's like a chaw to it. Yeah, you grabbing
- 1:58:56Speaker 1: You like dry, pretty moist? Yeah, I like a good
- 1:59:03Speaker 1: tacky jerky. Yeah, he doesn't me and I do not
- 1:59:06Speaker 1: see eye on jerky. No, I like that. I like
- 1:59:09Speaker 1: the attacky jerky too. I used to do like a
- 1:59:12Speaker 1: I call them like jerky tidbits, and they're more just
- 1:59:15Speaker 1: like chunks, you know, like bacon ends, but jerky. Yeah,
- 1:59:19Speaker 1: but maybe a little bit bigger, you know. But you
- 1:59:21Speaker 1: have to be real careful because if you over dried them,
- 1:59:23Speaker 1: you know, you just did it just wasn't edible at all.
- 1:59:26Speaker 1: But then sometimes I'd have them in my pack for
- 1:59:29Speaker 1: like a week and you pull them out and you
- 1:59:30Speaker 1: realize that you didn't actually dry all everything out that
- 1:59:33Speaker 1: needed to come out, you know, so you have like
- 1:59:35Speaker 1: a little just a little pungent smell in there. The
- 1:59:39Speaker 1: clients would be like, are you sure this is okay
- 1:59:41Speaker 1: to eat? Well? One thing about when you do with grain,
- 1:59:48Speaker 1: with grain cut and you're drying it, don't dry it
- 1:59:51Speaker 1: so much that it snaps what you want to do
- 1:59:54Speaker 1: is dry it till when you bend it you'll see
- 1:59:57Speaker 1: little white filaments. Okay, you bend it, there's white filaments
- 2:00:03Speaker 1: and no snap. That's what you're after when you do
- 2:00:08Speaker 1: cross green. I don't know what what's your indicator when
- 2:00:10Speaker 1: you cross green, it's similar you kind of banded. It
- 2:00:13Speaker 1: shouldn't go like if it snaps like a chip, that's
- 2:00:16Speaker 1: not good. Yeah. And the only thing I find a
- 2:00:18Speaker 1: lot of people screw up is um, there's jerky and
- 2:00:22Speaker 1: then there's cooked meat. And I've had a lot of
- 2:00:25Speaker 1: guys give me jerky. That's not jerky. It's like roasted.
- 2:00:31Speaker 1: It's just different. You know what I'm saying. It's just different. Man.
- 2:00:35Speaker 1: I've eaten many pounds of it, and I've made many
- 2:00:37Speaker 1: pounds of it, which is like it's just like yeah,
- 2:00:40Speaker 1: you kind of cooked little thin. Yeah, but just like
- 2:00:45Speaker 1: you know what I'm saying, it's just not jerky's. These
- 2:00:50Speaker 1: are all very useful tips things. Guys. You get that
- 2:00:52Speaker 1: when you do in your oven and when you're doing
- 2:00:54Speaker 1: your smoke or you know what I mean, Like, am
- 2:00:55Speaker 1: I describing it right? Yeah? Yeah, I mean there's a
- 2:00:58Speaker 1: big difference. And you know it dried meat and cook meat. Um,
- 2:01:04Speaker 1: so is Katie going to go out with cal She
- 2:01:08Speaker 1: doesn't want to hold me. I really understand. It's insulting
- 2:01:14Speaker 1: to me. We're talking about my wife. It's insulting to me,
- 2:01:16Speaker 1: and I don't really understand it. I don't think it's
- 2:01:18Speaker 1: a good idea for two people who are in that
- 2:01:21Speaker 1: close of a relationship where you are the expert and
- 2:01:24Speaker 1: the other person is the novice beginner and it's like
- 2:01:28Speaker 1: a personal relationship. I think that's a terrible idea. I
- 2:01:32Speaker 1: don't think it has anything to do with you, Steve.
- 2:01:34Speaker 1: I think it has to do with the fact that
- 2:01:36Speaker 1: that dynamic would be challenging. Couldn't disagree more. It's tough
- 2:01:42Speaker 1: because you think that people in relationship that should be
- 2:01:44Speaker 1: able to overcome whatever we've had. We've had three kids, Sure,
- 2:01:51Speaker 1: you married eleven years. What's going to ruin at all?
- 2:01:55Speaker 1: It's not about at all. It's about having a different
- 2:02:00Speaker 1: of patience. I mean, even when I was learning to
- 2:02:02Speaker 1: fly fish and Jeremiah would teach me there's a block.
- 2:02:06Speaker 1: You don't want to be open minded to your significant other.
- 2:02:09Speaker 1: Who So that's that's what I'm talking about. Yeah, Like
- 2:02:16Speaker 1: we're like we're married, but in a lot of ways
- 2:02:18Speaker 1: we're like enemies. Is married enemies? Where should we put um?
- 2:02:27Speaker 1: Like I recently got that fifty pound block of lard,
- 2:02:30Speaker 1: my fifty pound box a blard. Okay, I didn't know
- 2:02:32Speaker 1: about that, like very m real enemy. We're real enemies
- 2:02:36Speaker 1: about where I keep that? Where would she like you
- 2:02:39Speaker 1: to keep it? Not where I keep it anywhere else
- 2:02:42Speaker 1: on the counter. She just can't picture it being gone,
- 2:02:47Speaker 1: so she suggested I moved it to the place I
- 2:02:49Speaker 1: don't want to have it. Yeah, viewer like like she's
- 2:02:55Speaker 1: my like like in regards of my block lard, I
- 2:02:59Speaker 1: have like a very enemy feeling toward her, like my
- 2:03:02Speaker 1: my adversary about my large because when she approached me
- 2:03:07Speaker 1: about it, she didn't approach me as a friend. It
- 2:03:11Speaker 1: wasn't like, hey, buddy, I've been thinking about the box
- 2:03:14Speaker 1: of large. Wasn't like that I knowed by that box
- 2:03:18Speaker 1: a large and give it a smack. You know that
- 2:03:22Speaker 1: pack that plastic stuff you used to like tight wrap
- 2:03:25Speaker 1: stuff like to ship stuff. Yeah, the box was compromised,
- 2:03:29Speaker 1: and I know I took that shipping wrap and wrapped that.
- 2:03:32Speaker 1: It's like tight in a drum man. But it's like, yeah,
- 2:03:36Speaker 1: Kylie had a morbid fascination with that box when it
- 2:03:39Speaker 1: showed up. Yeah, fascination. Ye didn't she didn't like it,
- 2:03:46Speaker 1: but she couldn't keep away from it. And throughout the
- 2:03:48Speaker 1: course of the day and not ten minutes went by
- 2:03:50Speaker 1: that Kylie didn't come back over to my desk to
- 2:03:53Speaker 1: look into the come back over to my desk to
- 2:03:57Speaker 1: look into it and express like a level of dismay
- 2:04:00Speaker 1: about it. Did she go back to her She got
- 2:04:03Speaker 1: back her desk, and it comments later I look at
- 2:04:05Speaker 1: she's back looking into the box, and then she couldn't
- 2:04:10Speaker 1: understand it. That's a lot, She's like, that weighs half
- 2:04:14Speaker 1: what I went, let is so much? Lord, I was
- 2:04:19Speaker 1: like after, I was like, Kylie, we all know what.
- 2:04:20Speaker 1: You just want to have a scoop. Just have a scoop.
- 2:04:24Speaker 1: Just throw the spoon in there. No, okay, Kylie's deer
- 2:04:27Speaker 1: hunt when when hunting with my husband, But you've been
- 2:04:32Speaker 1: a number of times you've been around it. Yeah, so
- 2:04:36Speaker 1: I'm my husband hunts like I mean, all my my
- 2:04:40Speaker 1: friend's hunt um. But then I've gone shooting um for
- 2:04:44Speaker 1: many years but then just never actually hunted. How long
- 2:04:47Speaker 1: ahead you done the hunter safety two years ago, and
- 2:04:50Speaker 1: why did you do that? Before I turned thirty? My
- 2:04:53Speaker 1: goal was to shoot an animal. Um, to go hunting
- 2:04:57Speaker 1: for the first time ever. I'm from Montana, I should
- 2:04:59Speaker 1: be doing this. Um. I went through hunter Safety, was
- 2:05:02Speaker 1: very out of my comfort zone and very much at
- 2:05:05Speaker 1: unter safety. Yeah. What didn't you like about it? I
- 2:05:08Speaker 1: think just not knowing, like I think as a woman,
- 2:05:11Speaker 1: like and sounds stupid, but like kind of going in there, Hi,
- 2:05:15Speaker 1: I don't know exactly what I'm doing, per se, And
- 2:05:17Speaker 1: then um, you know, not knowing anyone, it feels like
- 2:05:20Speaker 1: like swinging dick contest or just kind of like you
- 2:05:22Speaker 1: just don't really know what you're supposed to do and
- 2:05:24Speaker 1: you kind of feel dumb. But but I went through it,
- 2:05:27Speaker 1: and then I didn't really tell anyone. Do you feel
- 2:05:29Speaker 1: like you're made to feel dumb? Or was this self imposed?
- 2:05:31Speaker 1: Self imposed? For sure? Um? No? And then I, um,
- 2:05:36Speaker 1: just over time, I haven't been able to go. And
- 2:05:38Speaker 1: then this year I had the opportunity to go. My
- 2:05:41Speaker 1: husband and I went, Um, is he pretty patient? Super patient?
- 2:05:45Speaker 1: Had he already gotten a dear? No? He mean this
- 2:05:47Speaker 1: was like for me, Like, I mean, he was like
- 2:05:49Speaker 1: I'm going to go for you. I'm going to be
- 2:05:50Speaker 1: a partner. I mean he got everything set up. He
- 2:05:53Speaker 1: wasn't even like trying to get one too. No, this
- 2:05:56Speaker 1: was a mean thing for sure, and like he I
- 2:05:59Speaker 1: mean it was very much a UM yeah, I think
- 2:06:03Speaker 1: I was like when we talk about couples, I think
- 2:06:05Speaker 1: it's there is I think sometimes in a couple that
- 2:06:07Speaker 1: you do want to fight, like what are you doing wrong?
- 2:06:09Speaker 1: You know? But I think that you you also you
- 2:06:12Speaker 1: love that person, so you also understand like okay, why
- 2:06:16Speaker 1: you know he did at one point. So I will
- 2:06:18Speaker 1: tell you. I choked twice. I couldn't get at two bucks,
- 2:06:21Speaker 1: two different bucks, and I couldn't shoot just kind of
- 2:06:24Speaker 1: first time you went, yeah, the first time I went
- 2:06:26Speaker 1: got it like I mean, huge buck, just staring at it.
- 2:06:29Speaker 1: Couldn't do it. I have no not a clue why,
- 2:06:32Speaker 1: like just I mean it was just right there, um
- 2:06:35Speaker 1: happen again and I was I was super mad at myself.
- 2:06:38Speaker 1: Um that I think the emotional part. I think when
- 2:06:41Speaker 1: they talk about the emotions afterwards, I think my emotion
- 2:06:45Speaker 1: was then I was frustrated with myself. Um, I think
- 2:06:49Speaker 1: you just don't want to hurt the animal. I mean
- 2:06:50Speaker 1: that was I think everything that you think about what
- 2:06:53Speaker 1: Tracy was saying, and all the girls like you don't
- 2:06:56Speaker 1: don't want it to go run off and if they
- 2:06:58Speaker 1: heard or anything so running all the all the negative scenarios,
- 2:07:03Speaker 1: and I think when we were kind of talking about
- 2:07:04Speaker 1: like that right when you have an insight in that trigger,
- 2:07:07Speaker 1: it's just like that's such a a different feeling that
- 2:07:11Speaker 1: I've never felt before. I can't put the bullet back
- 2:07:13Speaker 1: into gun. So that one that was really frustrating. So
- 2:07:17Speaker 1: at one point my husband did say he was like
- 2:07:19Speaker 1: kind of like what's wrong or like he's like for you, like,
- 2:07:22Speaker 1: are you not set up right? You know what in
- 2:07:25Speaker 1: your head is compassionate? Yeah, like what what can we do?
- 2:07:29Speaker 1: The way of doing it? Yeah, flip it. I mean,
- 2:07:31Speaker 1: I'm sure he was frustrated to pursue the same thing,
- 2:07:33Speaker 1: but act like you're more concerned about them. Yeah, take note.
- 2:07:38Speaker 1: I don't know if acting um yeah. And then do
- 2:07:43Speaker 1: you guys have a little bit you know what I'm
- 2:07:44Speaker 1: talking about a little bit like the enemy nous about
- 2:07:46Speaker 1: stuff now? And then oh we fight, we used to
- 2:07:49Speaker 1: fight all so um no, And then it was I
- 2:07:55Speaker 1: was coming up on like it was that he got
- 2:08:00Speaker 1: some trick up your sleeve. Then all of a sudden,
- 2:08:02Speaker 1: you quit fighting eleven years. I don't know, just kind of, Oh,
- 2:08:05Speaker 1: he just got it out of the way. Nothing to
- 2:08:08Speaker 1: fight about it. You has fought it all out. Now
- 2:08:12Speaker 1: you're just like every news resolved, the lard goes over there.
- 2:08:19Speaker 1: There's something to be said for that. What's that? My
- 2:08:23Speaker 1: father in law recently, it wasn't recent, maybe a year
- 2:08:26Speaker 1: ago now, but I remember him telling my daughter. She
- 2:08:28Speaker 1: was asking she had somehow noticed something about his lack
- 2:08:31Speaker 1: of anger with people whatever, and he was just telling
- 2:08:35Speaker 1: her about how in his age, he's sort of just
- 2:08:38Speaker 1: like giving up on fighting the Randy Randy Newbert piece
- 2:08:43Speaker 1: not justice, yeah, but not necessarily with his wife, just
- 2:08:46Speaker 1: like with anybody in life. He's just like, I just
- 2:08:48Speaker 1: don't have time to do that, and he's just taking like,
- 2:08:51Speaker 1: oh is that right? Yeah, you don't say um piece
- 2:08:57Speaker 1: not justice thing though. That's that's I don't know if
- 2:09:00Speaker 1: he wrote that. I made that up, but he introduced
- 2:09:02Speaker 1: me to that idea. Like obviously sometimes strangled my wife,
- 2:09:06Speaker 1: you know, and I'll just be like just snuggle up instead.
- 2:09:11Speaker 1: How who cares? Then? I was gonna strangle you about.
- 2:09:22Speaker 1: So he's a good dude. Good dude. And then on
- 2:09:26Speaker 1: Saturday night, right before like season end, and Sunday, Saturday
- 2:09:30Speaker 1: night at five o'clock at night, it's going it's dark,
- 2:09:32Speaker 1: like Sam had um, it's negative degrees and what do
- 2:09:36Speaker 1: you know, it's the last day of the season. Yeah.
- 2:09:38Speaker 1: Oh yeah, So I talked about across there's a creek
- 2:09:45Speaker 1: and we saw like I looked over and in the
- 2:09:47Speaker 1: fog there was a couple of different deer and I
- 2:09:50Speaker 1: saw dough and I saw a buck as just a
- 2:09:52Speaker 1: small little buck um. And I didn't like usually I
- 2:09:57Speaker 1: was like really hesitant beforehand, and this was just such
- 2:09:59Speaker 1: a very perfect, like normal feeling. Um. And then I
- 2:10:03Speaker 1: shot and I saw some like go like move, so
- 2:10:07Speaker 1: I didn't think I shot it um. And then my
- 2:10:09Speaker 1: husband actually I got lost there, so I like I
- 2:10:13Speaker 1: saw them across the creek in the fog, and I shot,
- 2:10:17Speaker 1: and then okay, I need more details. He is your
- 2:10:20Speaker 1: husband watching too, Yeah, but there was he didn't have
- 2:10:23Speaker 1: any feedback for you know, there was oh yeah, there
- 2:10:25Speaker 1: was a couple of deer, like we didn't know behind
- 2:10:28Speaker 1: that it was all foggy. So I just saw the
- 2:10:31Speaker 1: one buck and I shot. But then when we when
- 2:10:34Speaker 1: I shot, it was like all the other deer. Oh yeah,
- 2:10:37Speaker 1: I know what you're saying. So then it's hard to
- 2:10:38Speaker 1: tell what exactly I'm with you. So then he ran
- 2:10:41Speaker 1: over across the creek, and then I didn't think I
- 2:10:43Speaker 1: hit it, and then um, he ran over to investigate.
- 2:10:46Speaker 1: And then I got it so right in the lungs,
- 2:10:48Speaker 1: which was perfect of exactly what I wanted it. And
- 2:10:53Speaker 1: then he carried it, carried it over because he drained
- 2:10:56Speaker 1: it back across the creek, and I wanted to same
- 2:10:59Speaker 1: exactly a and like I wanted to be able to
- 2:11:01Speaker 1: gut it um and go through that. I watched it,
- 2:11:03Speaker 1: but because it was dark, I mean he had the
- 2:11:06Speaker 1: you know light on, I mean it was I didn't
- 2:11:08Speaker 1: feel comfortable. Temperature. Not great learning, but next time I
- 2:11:13Speaker 1: would like to learn next time for sure, any emotions
- 2:11:16Speaker 1: just before just I think just when shooting and not
- 2:11:21Speaker 1: not being able to for sure, I think, yeah, I
- 2:11:23Speaker 1: think that first time that you went out, you had
- 2:11:26Speaker 1: very frustrated, Like she texted me and she was just like,
- 2:11:29Speaker 1: I can't believe I didn't shoot it, and I won't
- 2:11:32Speaker 1: take that for the next time because you will. Yeah,
- 2:11:36Speaker 1: like you had like later you you thought to yourself
- 2:11:40Speaker 1: like that was a great opportunity. I blew it and yeah,
- 2:11:42Speaker 1: I mean it was literally like I was looking straight
- 2:11:44Speaker 1: at him right in the scope. He was huge. I mean,
- 2:11:46Speaker 1: it was just that he was just staring at me,
- 2:11:48Speaker 1: and I couldn't for the life when we do it
- 2:11:51Speaker 1: no idea. Why so, Um, did you guys bring into
- 2:11:54Speaker 1: a processor? Yep, so you gotta get it out and
- 2:11:58Speaker 1: then so we're just waiting for it to process and
- 2:12:00Speaker 1: you go pick it up. Do you guys eat a
- 2:12:02Speaker 1: lot of dear meat? Because he also, yeah, I used
- 2:12:04Speaker 1: to do a lot a lot of elk meat. Okay, yeah,
- 2:12:07Speaker 1: so game meat. So your husband likes to hunt elk any,
- 2:12:11Speaker 1: I mean yeah, he's did it. Um, he grew up
- 2:12:13Speaker 1: with it for doing all dear anything from here, so
- 2:12:18Speaker 1: he's probably got a long tradition of it. And then, um,
- 2:12:22Speaker 1: you you can eat it right away or like he'll
- 2:12:24Speaker 1: take a year to eat it. I would like to
- 2:12:26Speaker 1: try to eat it right away for sure. You know,
- 2:12:28Speaker 1: only good wild game cookbooks. No, I mean I think
- 2:12:35Speaker 1: we work at this place. I don't know. I'm called
- 2:12:37Speaker 1: meat eat or but I know that to call that
- 2:12:42Speaker 1: Hank shot cook. Look last night, Oh you did any
- 2:12:47Speaker 1: good recipes in there? I didn't open it. I don't
- 2:12:49Speaker 1: think I was in the stage of reading last night.
- 2:12:53Speaker 1: You know what boats someone left my house last night
- 2:12:55Speaker 1: that my kid wants so bad but and he I
- 2:12:57Speaker 1: told him he could steal it, but my wife wants
- 2:12:59Speaker 1: to track on its rightful owner. Is a book called
- 2:13:02Speaker 1: Crap Taxidermy. It's a book, a horrible tax Yeah. Um,
- 2:13:10Speaker 1: he took it, wanted to take the school, and I
- 2:13:12Speaker 1: said We'll go ahead because if someone left it here
- 2:13:13Speaker 1: they might not want it. And Kat is like they
- 2:13:15Speaker 1: might have just left it. And then we got to
- 2:13:16Speaker 1: like have a parenting moment where I'm like, yeah, you
- 2:13:19Speaker 1: m right. It's a great title, Crap Taxidermy. He really
- 2:13:26Speaker 1: likes the title. I think he wants to brand at
- 2:13:28Speaker 1: the school because he likes the title. Someone great. So, uh,
- 2:13:36Speaker 1: everybody gonna hunt again or no? Definitely? What do you
- 2:13:41Speaker 1: think you go? Is Jeremiah going to take your boyfriend
- 2:13:43Speaker 1: gonna take Hunter Safe? Yeah, we need to get it
- 2:13:45Speaker 1: to take Hunter safety. Think you'll hunt together. I think
- 2:13:48Speaker 1: we would totally hunt together. Your boyfriend, Ye, he'll do
- 2:13:51Speaker 1: hunter safety. Yep, we've talked about it. You think you
- 2:13:54Speaker 1: hunt again? Yeah, hunt together? Yeah, I do think we
- 2:13:56Speaker 1: would hunt together. I do. I think we figured out
- 2:13:59Speaker 1: how to like be productive in those types of situations together. Yeah.
- 2:14:03Speaker 1: You guys are gathering up rocks to make a chimney.
- 2:14:05Speaker 1: Oh man, that's no small job. Oh, it's no small job, man.
- 2:14:08Speaker 1: And every weekend, okay, it's rock picking time. It's like
- 2:14:11Speaker 1: five loads later. We're fortunate enough of our neighbors are
- 2:14:14Speaker 1: letting us take as much rock as we need off
- 2:14:16Speaker 1: their land. It's like five loads later. I'm like, are
- 2:14:18Speaker 1: we done for today? And you guys are palletizing the
- 2:14:21Speaker 1: right Yeah, you pick up one by one. You got
- 2:14:23Speaker 1: to clean them. You got to make sure that the
- 2:14:25Speaker 1: right size, the right shape, they have the right amount
- 2:14:27Speaker 1: of liking on them. It's just very diligent job. And
- 2:14:31Speaker 1: then you put them on pallets by size so that
- 2:14:33Speaker 1: our mason can work with them. And do you know
- 2:14:38Speaker 1: about this rock picking, it's pretty impressive when you look
- 2:14:40Speaker 1: at like the collection of palletized staffed rock. This moust
- 2:14:46Speaker 1: be one hell of a chimney. Oh it sure, dam is.
- 2:14:49Speaker 1: Hopefully it'll be the center of the house. It's like
- 2:14:53Speaker 1: literally blood, sweat and tears, and there they were, just
- 2:14:56Speaker 1: coming back from a rock picking. Yeah, like Kevis, that's
- 2:15:00Speaker 1: a great way to make a neighbor. Oh man, you're
- 2:15:03Speaker 1: just doing it just to be helpful. But they've already
- 2:15:06Speaker 1: gathered I mean they've lived there for forever, so that
- 2:15:09Speaker 1: all their rock is in different piles across their entire lands.
- 2:15:12Speaker 1: We go from power from the field. No, no, no,
- 2:15:16Speaker 1: it's already said that they've gathered rocks. Yeah, it's kind
- 2:15:20Speaker 1: of high grading. It's helpful for me. I'm just kidding.
- 2:15:23Speaker 1: Oh yeah, I mean I was thinking that those landowners. Listen,
- 2:15:27Speaker 1: they have past your land, the picking raw rock. They
- 2:15:31Speaker 1: would love you for sure, but they've already done all
- 2:15:33Speaker 1: that work in the decades. Yeah, that's still a good story.
- 2:15:39Speaker 1: I can't you can invite us all over to see
- 2:15:41Speaker 1: the chimney. Well, yeah, finally have a place where people
- 2:15:43Speaker 1: can sit. We live in seven square feet right now,
- 2:15:45Speaker 1: I can't really have anybody over. She's got a horse
- 2:15:48Speaker 1: property full of buildings and they live in a little apartment.
- 2:15:51Speaker 1: Was horrified, just like everybody, look as a building. There
- 2:15:56Speaker 1: are a lot of little units. Yeah, look at a building,
- 2:15:58Speaker 1: but then you guys live in a frame thing above
- 2:16:01Speaker 1: the barnes is funny. Yeah, one of those buildings isn't
- 2:16:05Speaker 1: like a living structure. Someone on a building screen in
- 2:16:09Speaker 1: and realized they hadn't built a place to sleep, and
- 2:16:14Speaker 1: he was like, and you bought that place? Yeah, he's
- 2:16:17Speaker 1: like I was forgetting some four barnes and no place
- 2:16:22Speaker 1: to sleep. And Steve was like one days like where
- 2:16:24Speaker 1: do you where do you keep all your clothes in
- 2:16:29Speaker 1: one of the barns? Uh? So what Kevin? Real quick?
- 2:16:33Speaker 1: What's um? What? What? What can we look ahead to?
- 2:16:36Speaker 1: What was the next thing to come out cool at
- 2:16:38Speaker 1: first lighting was Cow's prototype jacket? You got one too, Johnny?
- 2:16:42Speaker 1: I think, can I tell people about um, I've been
- 2:16:46Speaker 1: wearing a coat. Yeah, and there's a there's a thing
- 2:16:50Speaker 1: about it that you would notice from the ways off. Yeah,
- 2:16:54Speaker 1: we've been. We've been sharing that on social a little bit,
- 2:16:56Speaker 1: I think a little bit. But I think to tell
- 2:16:59Speaker 1: me what I'm talk well, I don't know if I
- 2:17:01Speaker 1: can yet. The thing that starts with G Yeah, we haven't.
- 2:17:06Speaker 1: We haven't technically released any of that stuff yet. You know,
- 2:17:10Speaker 1: I think I have no doubt. Yeah, so you know
- 2:17:13Speaker 1: you're not saying people, Oh there's a there's just you know,
- 2:17:16Speaker 1: some teasers on social across the across the internets, little
- 2:17:20Speaker 1: easter eggs. Yeah, exactly. We'll be releasing all that stuff
- 2:17:24Speaker 1: the first part of January, so we're close. Folks gotta wait,
- 2:17:27Speaker 1: like you know, couple when they hear this, uh, it'll
- 2:17:32Speaker 1: be out. So just tell them, Oh, really, when's this
- 2:17:35Speaker 1: coming out? January? Sometime people be all drunk. Yeah, the
- 2:17:45Speaker 1: next day, wh everybody gets drunk. That's right. We're heading
- 2:17:47Speaker 1: in the show season now, so we're gonna be all
- 2:17:48Speaker 1: over the place wrapping the wares. Good. Oh, you know,
- 2:17:53Speaker 1: we got a thing coming up. What's that? There's a
- 2:17:57Speaker 1: sports show that's right in Portland, Portland, Oregon. Yeah, we'll
- 2:18:02Speaker 1: be there. Yeah. Well we're going and doing a big,
- 2:18:04Speaker 1: old gigantic book signing. Um me cal Sam, Sam, Danielle Nice. Yeah,
- 2:18:13Speaker 1: we're gonna go to your booth. Are you gonna be there,
- 2:18:15Speaker 1: I'll be there. Oh yeah, I'm going to everything. Man,
- 2:18:18Speaker 1: I'll be traveling the country. You gotta pay for all
- 2:18:20Speaker 1: that hunting. I know. It's uh. I looked at the
- 2:18:23Speaker 1: schedule last week and it's a little daunting, but shows
- 2:18:27Speaker 1: a lot of shaking hands. I'm into it though, would
- 2:18:28Speaker 1: be fun. Get some hand sanitized, a lot of airports, airports, um,
- 2:18:34Speaker 1: so people can find out what's happening there. Then yeah, yeah,
- 2:18:37Speaker 1: we're gonna start releasing all this stuff for and um,
- 2:18:40Speaker 1: a lot of good things in the works for sure.
- 2:18:41Speaker 1: You guys had a great year, man, awesome year. Yeah,
- 2:18:44Speaker 1: it's great year. First light dot com, first light dot com.
- 2:18:48Speaker 1: Come check us out, big year, giant year. That's good man,
- 2:18:53Speaker 1: it's exciting. Appreciate that enormous here. Yeah, trying to think
- 2:18:58Speaker 1: up some more. It's you customer service because if you
- 2:19:03Speaker 1: if you're kind of confused at first light dot com,
- 2:19:06Speaker 1: there's a lot to take in. There are lots of layers.
- 2:19:09Speaker 1: You can call and talk to an actual actual hum
- 2:19:12Speaker 1: oh yeah, these human hunter hunter human and get some
- 2:19:17Speaker 1: uh you know, yeah, they're like they're like the awesomest
- 2:19:20Speaker 1: dudes are like, I've been fortunate enough to get there.
- 2:19:23Speaker 1: They are some badass dudes and they get after to
- 2:19:26Speaker 1: you know, like if you if you're at the office
- 2:19:27Speaker 1: at five oh one, it's like the door swing and
- 2:19:29Speaker 1: everybody's like out the door. You know, we got a
- 2:19:31Speaker 1: guy that tries it because they're out honey. Oh, we
- 2:19:35Speaker 1: got a guy that runs trail runs after in uh dude, yeah,
- 2:19:41Speaker 1: oh he does. He'll leave the office in his trail
- 2:19:43Speaker 1: running gear with a bow in hand, shut and run
- 2:19:48Speaker 1: into his own and make it by the time that
- 2:19:50Speaker 1: the Golden Hour is incredible. He's a machine. Oh yeah,
- 2:19:55Speaker 1: I was privy to some. Um, I was privy to
- 2:19:58Speaker 1: some like composite customer feedback stuff about first one showing
- 2:20:02Speaker 1: me and people there's a universal thing of people describing
- 2:20:07Speaker 1: um a aha moment around the customer service. Yeah. I
- 2:20:11Speaker 1: think that is a pretty well well spread. Those guys
- 2:20:14Speaker 1: are dialed and it's it's interesting too because a lot
- 2:20:16Speaker 1: of in large companies, you fifty sixty people customer service.
- 2:20:20Speaker 1: These guys are four to six dudes per day that
- 2:20:23Speaker 1: use our stuff every day. You know, they're they're out
- 2:20:25Speaker 1: in and every day. Whether it's skiing in the winter,
- 2:20:27Speaker 1: elk cutting in the fall, duck hunting, whatever you name it,
- 2:20:30Speaker 1: they're using it. So yelling at your wife, yeah, well,
- 2:20:32Speaker 1: not a lot of married guys that yet. They're all
- 2:20:35Speaker 1: single dudes running the hills. Mary did the woods. So
- 2:20:39Speaker 1: they answered the phone and like, what exactly is the
- 2:20:41Speaker 1: problem let me. That's right. It is a good trailer
- 2:20:48Speaker 1: running stuff though too nice. Yeah, I wouldn't. Did you
- 2:20:54Speaker 1: did you give Maggie temper? Maggie, we come from the
- 2:20:57Speaker 1: same place we do. Oh so you help them out?
- 2:21:00Speaker 1: You're throwing to him because you guys are from the
- 2:21:01Speaker 1: same zone. We made the connection. Nice. The last question, Phil,
- 2:21:09Speaker 1: you're getting all you getting jealous? Yeah? I think looking
- 2:21:13Speaker 1: around this room, I am the only person in here
- 2:21:16Speaker 1: who has yet to shoot a deer or gone hunting
- 2:21:19Speaker 1: at all. Have you think about doing some hunters safety? Yeah? No,
- 2:21:21Speaker 1: I think I think Ben, Ben, Ben and I are
- 2:21:23Speaker 1: going to do some stuff next year. So what do
- 2:21:26Speaker 1: you do the hunter safety soon? I think in the
- 2:21:29Speaker 1: next couple of months, hopefully if we can find a
- 2:21:32Speaker 1: there's a field day component that sounds like a lot
- 2:21:35Speaker 1: of fun. That's not a requirement, which okay, I didn't
- 2:21:38Speaker 1: mind all in one day. Oh no, the field day
- 2:21:41Speaker 1: is not required. So I think when I'm gonna throw
- 2:21:49Speaker 1: out on the table right now, is um should we
- 2:21:51Speaker 1: take bets on if Ben is going to be a
- 2:21:56Speaker 1: take your time or exactly what's the pro I think
- 2:22:00Speaker 1: you'll be worse than Steve. I think so I'm gonna
- 2:22:04Speaker 1: put my money on the most patient. I think Ben
- 2:22:07Speaker 1: is like, well, I've hunted with Bend until it's on.
- 2:22:12Speaker 1: He might have a little bit of a problem, like
- 2:22:15Speaker 1: we're going turkey hunting, he might shoot the turkey that
- 2:22:17Speaker 1: you might want to shoot. Yeah, this sounds a little
- 2:22:22Speaker 1: too specific. Patient, say you're spot anyway, so you'll do
- 2:22:30Speaker 1: hunter safety and you you'll get after it in the spring. Yeah,
- 2:22:33Speaker 1: I think so. I think that's a plan. I think
- 2:22:35Speaker 1: turkeys are an awesome way to immerse yourself into this world.
- 2:22:40Speaker 1: I feel grateful that that was my first introduction. It
- 2:22:43Speaker 1: primes you. Yeah, get a lot of encounters. Yes, alright, well, um,
- 2:22:48Speaker 1: when it happens, Phil, you'll be here anyway. Yeah, because
- 2:22:51Speaker 1: you're the engineer, whether you have to schedule, Um, okay
- 2:22:58Speaker 1: everyone until next year. Thank you, guys. Probably be that
- 2:23:02Speaker 1: good to have a show about everybody's second year. I'm
- 2:23:05Speaker 1: gant to think of something different. Well first, oh, i
- 2:23:09Speaker 1: think we're going in January. Actually, who me and Kyle
- 2:23:14Speaker 1: and Anna, this girl Anna are going I think so
- 2:23:19Speaker 1: let us know how it goes. I want to do
- 2:23:21Speaker 1: the Beaver thing. I can't even call this episode what
- 2:23:24Speaker 1: exactly is the problem. I would love to go beaver trapping.
- 2:23:32Speaker 1: Really yeah, that interests me. Dude, don't even worry about it.
- 2:23:39Speaker 1: I'll put you on the calendar. I would love to
- 2:23:40Speaker 1: do that. Good deal. Okay, thank you, thank you, thank you,
