- 0:16and many more on the spirit Nomad YouTube channel.
- 0:21Now here's your host, Julia London.
- 0:25Six months ago, I did a social media detox for a month where I
- 0:30Said, Instagram, Facebook Tick, Tock and Twitter for my phone,
- 0:33and I love it so much. My life was never the same as I
- 0:37did that. So I decided to do it
- 0:39permanently and in this video I will share the results.
- 0:43Why? I decided to delete the apps and
- 0:47how you can go about doing this yourself.
- 0:49Now, the first reason why I decided to quit social media is
- 0:54that I wasn't present in the moment.
- 0:57Now, a few years ago, I was traveling the world as As a
- 1:00nomad and my life looked perfect.
- 1:03On the outside people were scrolling my feeds, I was
- 1:05getting the likes, I was getting the shares but it took so much
- 1:09work to get a good picture. I remember being on Machu Picchu
- 1:14and I had looked forward to that moment, my whole life but then
- 1:16the whole day I was just chasing strangers.
- 1:19Asking them to take a picture of me and I got so frustrated when
- 1:23the only took a few and laughed because as you know it takes
- 1:26around hundred pictures to get one, really good one.
- 1:28At least, for me, it's He's like the dub watching coming out or
- 1:31I'm linking and I never want to spoil the press and I like a
- 1:36perfect moment in my life like that ever again.
- 1:38Just so I can get a few likes on social media and I realized how
- 1:42bad this social media culture is when I came to Bali two years
- 1:46ago and I was in nusa penida and Island and there's this
- 1:51Viewpoint that is super famous and Instagram and it was a queue
- 1:55and it took me I think one hour or more until I was at a
- 1:59viewpoint. Point and people are arguing
- 2:02trying to cut forward in the queue, everything to get those
- 2:06likes and it's just mind-blowing to me because this whole island
- 2:09was beautiful, but everyone just wants to get that one spot and
- 2:12stand in an hour wasting their day, just so they could get
- 2:15those likes. And then I realized like, what
- 2:17am I doing here? Why am I waiting an hour in this
- 2:21line being stressed out getting a sunburn just so I can get some
- 2:26likes on a photo reason. Number two, why I deleted my
- 2:29social media. It's because I was comparing
- 2:31myself to others and I care way too much about what other people
- 2:35think of me. Then I should, I was, what?
- 2:37People might call an Instagram model, I was traveling around
- 2:40the world, taking photos of myself, in different locations
- 2:44and looking back, I had a really good body back then.
- 2:48Now with a quarantine, I've gained a few pounds but back
- 2:53then I felt like I was ugly. I felt I was comparing myself to
- 2:57all these other Instagram models, who have Had bigger,
- 3:00boobs, bigger ass. Slimmer than me.
- 3:04They had a thigh gaps. I didn't have the thigh gap and
- 3:06these models. I was jealous of they were in
- 3:08turn comparing themselves to other models for someone
- 3:13gorgeous. German model, I was following.
- 3:17She got a boob job because she didn't feel like she was
- 3:20beautiful enough. Like this is crazy.
- 3:23So, even Instagram models feel like they are not good looking
- 3:27enough and it's really toxic, I think it's really toxic.
- 3:30So I really felt I needed to take a step back from that
- 3:32reason. Number three why I decided to
- 3:34quit social media is because these social media companies are
- 3:37not very ethical when you download a Facebook app or
- 3:41Instagram, look through which permissions you are giving away.
- 3:44They want to access to everything everything about you.
- 3:47It's really creepy and it's gotten worse over the last year.
- 3:50Not only does this means that they can sell these data to
- 3:53companies. So you are in fact, a product.
- 3:57But this also means that they can spy on you and marks.
- 4:00Convert could literally read your DMs. It's not just between
- 4:03you and the other party, especially, if you are a light
- 4:06worker and you sharing as sensitive or or controversial
- 4:10topics with the world, you can get bad and it could even be a
- 4:14threat to you. I feel privacy is a human right?
- 4:17And I don't think anyone has a right to spy on that and that is
- 4:22one reason why I just did not feel good being on social media.
- 4:25Right now, reason number four is that social media is Time Thief
- 4:29heh. You ever gone into your phone's
- 4:32screen time. I think it's called, it's quite
- 4:35scary to see. Like, how much time you're
- 4:38spending on different, social medias?
- 4:39I used to be spending three hours.
- 4:41I all social media, every single day, when when I'm on my
- 4:43deathbed, looking back on my life, I will not remember those
- 4:46three hours per day scrolling through my Instagram and
- 4:51Facebook feeds know. It will be the experiences that
- 4:54I had at the things. I build the connections.
- 4:56I made. Reason number five is the
- 4:58political bias. And censorship ass.
- 5:02You definitely must have noticed the last year or so, is that
- 5:06channels are being taken out taking away?
- 5:08That is, there are controversial.
- 5:10That is not with the mainstream narrative.
- 5:12Everything that is not the mainstream narrative, gets shut
- 5:15down band or did monetized and they've also introduced
- 5:19fact-checkers to make sure that everyone is just listening to
- 5:23them. Mainstream media narrative.
- 5:25Blindly don't think for themselves, you might see a
- 5:28little pop-up there. Boy, if someone mentions the V
- 5:32or the virus, there will be a little pop up down below saying
- 5:36for the correct information check here.
- 5:39And I feel like it's really, really scary because it's taking
- 5:42away our freedom of speech. When we lose freedom of speech,
- 5:45we're no better than communist countries, right?
- 5:48That is what it is. Controlling speech, controlling
- 5:52the narrative. They became really painful for
- 5:53me to see and I didn't want to support that and then reason
- 5:56number 6. Why I deleted my social media
- 5:59apps is because I I felt lonely. So especially watching the
- 6:02Instagram stories. I used to be the one being a
- 6:05traveling around having all these experiences, but then once
- 6:08UK, shut down and my friends back home in Sweden, are they
- 6:13were still able to do everything live life normally during this
- 6:16crisis, it was really hard to see.
- 6:19They were having parties as normal.
- 6:21They were going on skiing holidays in beautiful North
- 6:25Sweden. I just felt major fomo.
- 6:28And here, I was Was just alone with my with my boyfriend, here
- 6:32in the UK doing nothing for a year.
- 6:35It just made me feel miserable. And the thing is, I actually
- 6:39really like being alone but seeing everyone enjoying their
- 6:42life. So much when I'm just stuck
- 6:44here, doing nothing except working.
- 6:47It made me compare myself to other people which can become
- 6:50quite oxic. So, it's now been around six
- 6:52months. Since I deleted, my social media
- 6:54apps, my life has literally not been the same.
- 6:56I feel so much more present when I do go on Eat ribs here.
- 7:00And there a few sample, I went on a camping trip in the Autumn
- 7:04last year before lockdown, and it was just so nice to not have
- 7:07to prove myself to other people to be able to just be in the
- 7:10moment and enjoy that experience.
- 7:13And not having to be like, oh, I need to get the stories to show
- 7:16everyone. How perfect my life is?
- 7:18Yeah, it was just an intimate moment with my boyfriend in in
- 7:22nature, enjoying the wildlife cooking together and it's
- 7:26beautiful. And I don't think I could go
- 7:27back to how it was spending. An hour's taking photos from
- 7:31different angles. Every time I travel where are
- 7:33outside the house, I feel happy now without validation, when I
- 7:37do take a photo is for my own memories.
- 7:41I don't care how I look in that photo, it's just so I can
- 7:44memorize this beautiful moments, and I don't need any filters or
- 7:48anything like that. I'm also saving three hours per
- 7:51day now that I'm not spending on social media.
- 7:53I'm so, I have been taking time to read a lot.
- 7:56Reading is one of my favorite activities to do.
- 7:58I have a long morning routine, Where I'm going for nature walks
- 8:02and meditating exercising every day.
- 8:04It's just it's just wonderful. My mornings are so much more
- 8:08peaceful. I used to wake up and just go
- 8:10straight to Instagram. See how many new likes and
- 8:13followers? I had now.
- 8:15I don't even have any of those apps so I can't do that.
- 8:18I just wake up with an immense gratitude to be here on Earth
- 8:21right now and and I take my time, making my breakfast.
- 8:26It's a slower pace of life and I love that.
- 8:28I love how more isn't grateful. I feel for my life.
- 8:32Without any comparison with other people.
- 8:35I've also been able to get so much more work done as an
- 8:37entrepreneur, I've really been able to step into my mission and
- 8:41also this extra space that I created for myself has really
- 8:44allowed me to go inwards and think about what it is.
- 8:47I want to share with the world. What is what are the next
- 8:49products they want to create to help people?
- 8:51Another huge benefit? Is that?
- 8:53I feel I have so much more control over my life.
- 8:55I used to constantly be checking my Instagram messages, my DMs
- 8:59and I Deleted WhatsApp, and the messenger app as well, since
- 9:03because of privacy reasons before I delete them, people
- 9:07were able to call me 24/7. And when I delete them, people
- 9:10couldn't do that anymore. So now when I want have a call
- 9:12with someone, I reached out to them, or if someone wants to
- 9:15talk to me, we booked in a call during a time when I'm
- 9:18available. And when I want to talk to them,
- 9:20time is the most valuable currency.
- 9:22We have just limited in this lifetime.
- 9:24If you're constantly just replying to messages to getting
- 9:28phone calls Swept Away here and There, it's hard to really get
- 9:31into your mission and enjoy your life I think.
- 9:34And then of course, another huge benefit is.
- 9:36I've so much less screen time. Now I'm so much less attached to
- 9:41my phone. I just use it to listen to
- 9:43Spotify mostly have some Bank apps.
- 9:46He's like that. I actually took it one step
- 9:48further and I had a newest iPhone and I downgraded to the
- 9:51oldest, Google pixel phone, and that has helped me a lot with
- 9:54getting rid of my phone addiction.
- 9:56So, if you want to limit or cut out social From your life.
- 10:00What should you do with our different levels?
- 10:02You can go to. If you don't want to get rid of
- 10:05social media, one option is just to remove the notifications from
- 10:08your phone, so that you will be less inclined to open your
- 10:12phone. Every time you hear a
- 10:14notification, the level above that is to just remove the apps
- 10:19from your phone. So the Instagram app Facebook
- 10:21app. And this is what I decided to do
- 10:23because then Facebook and these Tech Titans have less
- 10:26information about me. There's less permissions if I'm
- 10:28just using the desktop. Versions and I didn't want to go
- 10:31cold turkey and delete the social media completely the
- 10:35counts. As I am a concentrator that is
- 10:37my business model and in the future, I might want my virtual
- 10:40assistant for sample to post for me there.
- 10:43So, that's one option. This is also a good option for
- 10:45you. If you just want to do a shorter
- 10:47detox or you're not sure if you want to get rid of social media
- 10:50forever and the next level, and the highest level is to just
- 10:54remove the accounts completely. That's what I did for Twitter
- 10:58and Linkedin. I feel like that you were adding
- 11:01any type of value in my life other than stress and they would
- 11:03also not be useful for my business is something that
- 11:05spiritual Niche. This is a good option for you.
- 11:07If you don't have a business involving content creation, or
- 11:11you feel real, really addicted to social media that it's like
- 11:14really taking over your life. And you don't want any option to
- 11:17be able to go back then, simply remove the accounts and delete
- 11:20the data. I feel social media can be
- 11:22really entertaining and it's a good way to stay in contact with
- 11:24friends, but there are other ways for entertainment, for
- 11:27example, YouTube, I know that could come and as a social
- 11:31media, but for me, I have a very healthy relationship with
- 11:34YouTube. I used to Moroso self-growth
- 11:36tool, I look at videos about minimalism spiritual videos,
- 11:41channelings, the positives, far outweigh, the negatives with
- 11:45YouTube. And when it comes to staying in
- 11:46touch with friends, you can use more privacy focused platforms
- 11:50like signal or telegram where it's encrypted.
- 11:53So that these Tech Giants, can spy on you.
- 11:56There will I go back to social media in the future, Maybe?
- 12:00At the moment, I'm just busy enjoying my life.
- 12:04I've been present and of comparing myself to other
- 12:07people, so I'm not in a while. Now, I'd love to hear your
- 12:10opinion about social media, how it affects your life.
- 12:13Are you going to delete social media or just limit?
- 12:16Its use, let me know in the comments.
