- 0:01Speaker 1: What's up, everybody, and welcome to JFK Book Reviews, a
- 0:04Speaker 1: division of the Lone Gumming Podcast. I'm Rob Clark, He's
- 0:08Speaker 1: Joe Borelli, and today we're going to be reviewing the
- 0:10Speaker 1: book Killing of a President by Robert Jay Grodin. Maybe
- 0:16Speaker 1: you've heard of him one in case you haven't, ironically enough,
- 0:21Speaker 1: Joe Robert Groden was born on November twenty two, nineteen
- 0:26Speaker 1: forty five, so he shares a birthday with the anniversary
- 0:30Speaker 1: of the president's death. Oh wow, Yeah, he's uh he said,
- 0:37Speaker 1: he said, quite the lengthy tenure as a conspiracy researcher,
- 0:43Speaker 1: if you will. I didn't know this, Joe, but he
- 0:48Speaker 1: dropped out of high school in eleventh grade and somehow
- 0:54Speaker 1: managed to make himself a photographic expert, the photo optics technician,
- 0:59Speaker 1: and a photographic consultant for the House Select Committee on
- 1:02Speaker 1: Assassinations in nineteen seventy six.
- 1:06Speaker 2: Yeah. I believe he was in the army too at
- 1:09Speaker 2: some point.
- 1:11Speaker 1: Yes, he authored. He has authored five books about the
- 1:14Speaker 1: assassination over the years, and this is one of them.
- 1:21Speaker 1: This is also being the second. The first was what
- 1:28Speaker 1: was it the case for conspiracy that he did? And
- 1:32Speaker 1: he co authored that book. Now, this book here, Killing
- 1:42Speaker 1: of a President has a subtitle it is the complete
- 1:46Speaker 1: photographic record of the JFK assassination, the conspiracy and the
- 1:50Speaker 1: cover up, so wide ranging here on this book. This
- 2:00Speaker 1: book was published in nineteen ninety three by Viking Studio Books,
- 2:05Speaker 1: a division of the Penguin Group out of New York,
- 2:10Speaker 1: and it does have a forward by Oliver Stone. And
- 2:17Speaker 1: we should also mention that as of the recording of
- 2:21Speaker 1: this here book review, Robert Gordon is still with us,
- 2:26Speaker 1: still active in the community, still attending conferences, still very
- 2:31Speaker 1: much interested in the subject.
- 2:33Speaker 2: Saw him a few weeks ago. Great guy.
- 2:36Speaker 1: Yeah. He was also a consultant for the movie JFK.
- 2:44Speaker 1: He met with Oliver Stone several times and really helped
- 2:49Speaker 1: the actors get into their roles and understand the gravity
- 2:53Speaker 1: of the situations that they were put into. This book
- 3:02Speaker 1: has about two hundred and thirty pages. Like I said,
- 3:07Speaker 1: it has a ford written by Oliver Stone and introduction one.
- 3:12Speaker 3: Two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine chapters, a
- 3:18Speaker 3: bibliography and an index, and also a suggested documentary list
- 3:25Speaker 3: that maybe you should watch again.
- 3:28Speaker 1: This was nineteen ninety three though, so I'm sure the
- 3:32Speaker 1: list has grown since then, Joe sure it haes. Now
- 3:38Speaker 1: this book here, you can get it on Amazon in hardcover,
- 3:42Speaker 1: which is the original format and the one that I
- 3:44Speaker 1: would suggest that you do get because I will say
- 3:50Speaker 1: this about Robert Groden's books take Away the High Treasons,
- 3:55Speaker 1: but his Lee Harvey Oswald book in this book the
- 3:59Speaker 1: Killing of a President, and I believe the case for
- 4:02Speaker 1: conspiracy or I'm sorry JFK. Absolute Proof. Sorry, his most
- 4:07Speaker 1: recent one are all big, beautiful, colorful books, and of
- 4:17Speaker 1: course Groden is big into photography, so these books are
- 4:22Speaker 1: filled with pictures color and black and white and printed
- 4:27Speaker 1: on nice glossy paper. So you definitely want to get
- 4:32Speaker 1: the hardcovers now on Amazon. You're looking anywhere from used
- 4:40Speaker 1: thirteen bucks to forty three brand new. And I believe
- 4:48Speaker 1: Groden has always tried to sell his own books from
- 4:52Speaker 1: his own website, so a lot of these things here
- 4:56Speaker 1: you might be getting secondhand, if you will, in new condition. Now,
- 5:02Speaker 1: he does tend to overcharge a little bit from his
- 5:05Speaker 1: own personal website. You know, I think his most recent book,
- 5:09Speaker 1: Absolute Proof, he was charging like eighty or one hundred dollars.
- 5:17Speaker 1: But again I'm not going to trash this guy too much.
- 5:21Speaker 1: Doing books like these is very hard work. And when
- 5:24Speaker 1: you're trying to support yourself and your activities in this
- 5:29Speaker 1: whole conspiracy research game, you know, you try to recoup
- 5:34Speaker 1: your costs.
- 5:36Speaker 2: Yeap.
- 5:38Speaker 1: That being said, Joe, this book definitely has a conspiracy
- 5:41Speaker 1: lean to it, I would say, for sure. And with that,
- 5:45Speaker 1: I'll turn it over to you for the meat and taters, Bud.
- 5:48Speaker 2: Sure. So what was the author trying to achieve with
- 5:52Speaker 2: this book? Well, thankfully, as we like to see, he
- 5:58Speaker 2: tells us induction. Since March of nineteen seventy five, I
- 6:03Speaker 2: have received thousands of requests for copies of the photographic
- 6:09Speaker 2: evidence in the Kennedy case. The photo collection contained in
- 6:13Speaker 2: this book is the response to those requests. Many of
- 6:18Speaker 2: these pictures are unpleasant and sensitive in nature, but must
- 6:23Speaker 2: be published in the interest of historical accuracy. Some of
- 6:28Speaker 2: the photography is admittedly of inferior quality, and we must
- 6:33Speaker 2: remember that many of the photographs were taken by amateurs
- 6:36Speaker 2: in rushed and unsettling circumstances. That is for sure. They
- 6:41Speaker 2: are true, unaltered reflections of history and the making, and
- 6:45Speaker 2: are offered here with the intent to keep alive of
- 6:49Speaker 2: who really killed JFK? And like you mentioned, Rob, the
- 6:56Speaker 2: subtitle of this book is the Complete photo graphic Record
- 7:01Speaker 2: of the k Assassination, the conspiracy, and the cover up.
- 7:06Speaker 2: And you know there how many chapters did you count.
- 7:16Speaker 1: So long ago? I think it was nine?
- 7:19Speaker 2: Yeah? Many, yeah, But almost every page has a picture
- 7:26Speaker 2: on it, or a document or or or a map
- 7:34Speaker 2: or an image, and so it really is that, and
- 7:39Speaker 2: it is really well written, and it goes in chronological order,
- 7:45Speaker 2: which if anyone who is familiar with our show knows
- 7:50Speaker 2: when we review different topics, we love to do that
- 7:54Speaker 2: and we respect it. It's also important to consider when
- 8:00Speaker 2: this book was released, Rob. It was released in nineteen
- 8:03Speaker 2: ninety three, the first one, not counting other versions, and
- 8:11Speaker 2: that is right after the JFK Records Act, right and
- 8:15Speaker 2: before THERRB started. So it really did contribute I think
- 8:20Speaker 2: to a lot of the momentum and photo documentary record
- 8:25Speaker 2: in a key time in my opinion. And I don't know.
- 8:30Speaker 2: So the book features over six hundred and fifty photographs, maps, drawings,
- 8:34Speaker 2: documents and enhanced images. I don't know how many were
- 8:37Speaker 2: previously released or suppressed. I think a lot of them.
- 8:44Speaker 2: So you know, there is a lot of value there.
- 8:49Speaker 2: He talks about, you know, detailed analysis of the superter film,
- 8:56Speaker 2: does kind of a frame by frame type of thing,
- 8:59Speaker 2: and other show photos. He goes into the medical, the
- 9:03Speaker 2: ballistics and acoustics evidence, alleges some forgery and some autopsy photos,
- 9:12Speaker 2: and of course challenges the magic bullet theory, which is
- 9:16Speaker 2: of course silly. You know, I really liked how he
- 9:23Speaker 2: started off, well, he starts off with a document in
- 9:29Speaker 2: the middle of his intro, but in one of his
- 9:31Speaker 2: sub chapters, called the Police Response, I really like how
- 9:37Speaker 2: he presented the transcripts of police Chief Jesse Curry and
- 9:45Speaker 2: Sheriff Bill Decker and the radio instructions to their men
- 9:49Speaker 2: to immediately investigate the top of the grassy knoll in
- 9:52Speaker 2: the railroad yard behind it. These orders, given quickly in
- 9:57Speaker 2: response to the gunfire, indicate that both Curry and Decker
- 10:01Speaker 2: were convinced that the shots came from the knoll. Their
- 10:04Speaker 2: car was directly in front of it when the shooting began.
- 10:08Speaker 2: And you know, he might have some of the clearest
- 10:12Speaker 2: picks of dark complexed man who many researchers among myself,
- 10:17Speaker 2: and not that I want to put words in your mouth.
- 10:20Speaker 2: I believe you believe was Felipe vital Santiago, noted Cuban exile.
- 10:27Speaker 2: My only qualms with the book are the mysterious death project,
- 10:37Speaker 2: which are kind of interjected like every few pages, in
- 10:42Speaker 2: every chapter and sub chapter. And you you know, people
- 10:48Speaker 2: have who have watched our show know some of our
- 10:52Speaker 2: thoughts on you know, not every death was mysterious. People die,
- 10:58Speaker 2: So I'm going to read a couple of the mysterious
- 11:01Speaker 2: death claims. Let's see Hank Killim, the husband of one
- 11:08Speaker 2: of Jack Ruby's strippers, Wanda Joyce. Killim was found with
- 11:12Speaker 2: his throat slashed in March of nineteen sixty four. Before
- 11:15Speaker 2: his death, kill Him had stated to his brother, I
- 11:18Speaker 2: am a dead man, but I have to run as
- 11:20Speaker 2: far as I'm going to run. Now. Does that have
- 11:24Speaker 2: to do with the jfk assassination. I don't know. Beverly
- 11:28Speaker 2: Oliver's husband, George McGann, was murdered in the home of
- 11:32Speaker 2: a man named Ronnie Whedon. Convicted killer Charles Harrelson, who
- 11:36Speaker 2: knew Whedon from prison, claimed that Whedon had killed McGann
- 11:41Speaker 2: and that he had a reputation of a hitman. Again,
- 11:45Speaker 2: not sure what that has to do with JFK. In
- 11:47Speaker 2: nineteen sixty nine, Deputy Buddy Walters, who we've talked about
- 11:53Speaker 2: on the show, was killed in a hotel room while
- 11:56Speaker 2: trying to arrest a wanted criminal. It allowed the naked
- 12:01Speaker 2: suspect to go into the bathroom and dress. When the
- 12:04Speaker 2: man emerged with a gun, he shot Walthers in the
- 12:08Speaker 2: chest and killed him. Related to JFK, James Warrell, a witness,
- 12:20Speaker 2: Indi Lee Plaza, was also killed under suspicious circumstance, died
- 12:26Speaker 2: in a car accident. David Goldstein, who had assisted the
- 12:30Speaker 2: FBI in tracing the revolver used in the typic killing,
- 12:34Speaker 2: died in nineteen sixty five of seemingly natural causes. Okay,
- 12:41Speaker 2: and William Whaley, of course, the cab driver died in
- 12:46Speaker 2: nineteen sixty five and and was like the only cabby
- 12:49Speaker 2: who was killed since thirty seven in Dallas or something.
- 12:55Speaker 2: But do these have to have to do with a
- 13:00Speaker 2: JFK assassination. I'm not sure. I don't know. So the book,
- 13:07Speaker 2: I mean, it's it's a huge resource, and if I
- 13:11Speaker 2: can get it for under twenty bucks first copy original,
- 13:16Speaker 2: I'm gonna do it because I have the PDF version
- 13:19Speaker 2: and I'd love to have it in hand. And for sure,
- 13:32Speaker 2: the quality is really nice. So the book is pretty
- 13:36Speaker 2: much visual. It's not as much as a hardcore research
- 13:40Speaker 2: book or a who Done It type of conspiracy type
- 13:43Speaker 2: book of course, hence the subtitle. So considering what the author,
- 13:51Speaker 2: mister Grodin had hoped to accomplish with this book in
- 13:55Speaker 2: terms of the photographic evidence, I think he did it very,
- 14:00Speaker 2: very effectively. And with that, sir, I'm going to hand
- 14:05Speaker 2: it back to you for your rating.
- 14:10Speaker 1: Well, I will say this, I've always been a fan
- 14:16Speaker 1: of people who stand on business, and while I may
- 14:20Speaker 1: not agree with everything Robert Grodin has said and done
- 14:24Speaker 1: over the years, we do have to credit the man
- 14:27Speaker 1: with a few things as well as writing these books,
- 14:30Speaker 1: and that is getting the Zapruva film on national television
- 14:34Speaker 1: on the Heralder Rivera Show in nineteen seventy five.
- 14:37Speaker 2: Yeah, he helped with that.
- 14:39Speaker 1: For sure, and he probably prompted very much a second
- 14:44Speaker 1: House Select Committee or second investigation you know, done by
- 14:47Speaker 1: the House Selectmmittee on Assassinations, of which you know, we
- 14:52Speaker 1: have an invaluable treasure trove of documents and revisiting reinvestigation
- 14:57Speaker 1: of the case so got alone is awesome, and not
- 15:01Speaker 1: to mention the fact that over the past thirty or
- 15:05Speaker 1: forty years, you know, this man has parked his ass
- 15:12Speaker 1: in Dally Plaza, peddling his wares and talking to people
- 15:19Speaker 1: on the daily, which is I think an admirable thing.
- 15:24Speaker 1: He also fought the city of Dallas over his many
- 15:28Speaker 1: tickets and one you know, so I think, you know,
- 15:34Speaker 1: all that is admirable for sure, you know. But back
- 15:37Speaker 1: to the book a little bit. As you said, you know,
- 15:41Speaker 1: it's not meant to be a you know, word heavy
- 15:46Speaker 1: page turner. What it does do very well, Joe, is
- 15:52Speaker 1: it covers a multitude of subjects briefly and almost thoroughly,
- 16:03Speaker 1: which is a very hard thing to accomplish. I mean,
- 16:06Speaker 1: this book goes into all just about everything you can
- 16:10Speaker 1: imagine aspects of the case. Any beginner to the case,
- 16:13Speaker 1: I would recommend get this book, yep, because it has
- 16:18Speaker 1: literally included in it most I won't say all, but
- 16:24Speaker 1: most of the photographs associated with this case, and they're
- 16:32Speaker 1: reproduced here in beautiful as clear quality as you're going
- 16:37Speaker 1: to find anywhere, really, and you will get a very
- 16:44Speaker 1: wide general overview of the entire case. By having this book.
- 16:49Speaker 1: Reading through this book, like I said, you know, you
- 16:52Speaker 1: could probably do this in a day, you know, and
- 16:56Speaker 1: come out on the other side, you know, having actually
- 16:59Speaker 1: learned something. You know, I was flipping through this book.
- 17:02Speaker 1: Now we don't me and Joe don't have actual physical
- 17:05Speaker 1: copies of this book. We have the PDF file. Sorry, Robert, uh,
- 17:10Speaker 1: but it's just as beautiful as the physical copy, you know,
- 17:15Speaker 1: although I can't spank it in front of you today.
- 17:20Speaker 1: But you know, as we were going back over this
- 17:22Speaker 1: book and regoing through everything, you know, somebody like me
- 17:28Speaker 1: who's been looking in the case thirty some years, I
- 17:32Speaker 1: still there was two pictures in this book that jumped
- 17:36Speaker 1: out to me that I don't remember seeing anywhere. Here's
- 17:43Speaker 1: one of them, Joe, this is just one of them.
- 17:45Speaker 1: And I'll tell you why this isn't. This is intriguing
- 17:48Speaker 1: to me. So okay, uh. The black kid in the
- 17:53Speaker 1: forefront of the picture, that's Roy Lewis. We recently had
- 17:59Speaker 1: Ed Dow on this show and he's been talking to
- 18:02Speaker 1: Roy Lewis for years now. At the time, Roy Lewis
- 18:06Speaker 1: was working at the school Book Depository under age. He
- 18:08Speaker 1: was fourteen or fifteen years old, so he's still relatively young,
- 18:14Speaker 1: you know, at least in his seventies now as far
- 18:18Speaker 1: as you know, witnesses to the assassination go. So that's
- 18:22Speaker 1: very interesting. And I don't know who the big boy
- 18:25Speaker 1: is in front of him, uh, but it's a big fella.
- 18:32Speaker 2: Now.
- 18:32Speaker 1: What's also interesting in this photo is do you see
- 18:36Speaker 1: the cop in the middle with the badge on his
- 18:38Speaker 1: arm and the big thick neck ears sticking out right
- 18:44Speaker 1: in the middle of the photo. Joe, do you seem.
- 18:46Speaker 2: Yes, looking towards the TSBD.
- 18:49Speaker 1: Yes, all right. Now follow the top of his head
- 18:55Speaker 1: and then to the right, and you'll see a figure
- 18:59Speaker 1: standing on the steps of the depository looking up at
- 19:04Speaker 1: the front entrance of the depository who has a very
- 19:07Speaker 1: suspicious looking hairline. To me, Joe, yeah, you see that.
- 19:13Speaker 2: I do.
- 19:15Speaker 1: Now that's not Billy Lovelady, because we know Billy Lovelady
- 19:20Speaker 1: was wearing a red and black and like dark blue
- 19:24Speaker 1: checkered button up collared shirt that day, and I don't
- 19:29Speaker 1: see that in this picture because you can see Roy Lewis,
- 19:33Speaker 1: he's got on a red or dark brown jacket, so
- 19:36Speaker 1: the color would come through if that was Billy Lovelady
- 19:41Speaker 1: wearing a red mostly red and dark colored shirt. But
- 19:45Speaker 1: I don't see that. It's things like this that when
- 19:50Speaker 1: you take the time to really study these photographs in
- 19:52Speaker 1: the book, that you know, you can maybe find something
- 19:58Speaker 1: to be like hmm, I wonder, I wonder, I wonder,
- 20:03Speaker 1: I wonder if that could be possibly because you know,
- 20:08Speaker 1: we we don't have what we don't have, Joe, we
- 20:10Speaker 1: have a lot of photographs from this day. Well, what
- 20:13Speaker 1: we don't have from this day are photographs of Lee
- 20:16Speaker 1: Harvey Oswald leaving the depository one. So could this be
- 20:22Speaker 1: him on the steps waiting to leave?
- 20:28Speaker 2: Right and knowing knowing Lee's personality, Hey, work is done
- 20:34Speaker 2: for the day, I'm out of here.
- 20:37Speaker 1: Me like, you know, the guy standing there with his
- 20:38Speaker 1: arms crossed, listening to something you know, or watching something
- 20:45Speaker 1: I don't know. But that's just an example of the
- 20:48Speaker 1: of the amazing photographs that you will find in this book, Joe.
- 20:53Speaker 1: So with that being said, now there they're there's some
- 21:00Speaker 1: faults in this book, as Joe mentioned some of them.
- 21:05Speaker 1: Now I understand why they included the mysterious deaths. I mean,
- 21:10Speaker 1: that's something that's always going to sell, right, that's conspiracy fodder,
- 21:13Speaker 1: you know, it's something mysterious happened here. These people are dying,
- 21:16Speaker 1: you know, mysteriously, these witnesses. You know, that's always going
- 21:21Speaker 1: to sell books. But as I was going back through
- 21:26Speaker 1: this book, I see that Robert Groden thinks that there
- 21:32Speaker 1: was six shots definitely fired in Daly Plaza, and at
- 21:39Speaker 1: least two or three more. He says that could possibly
- 21:45Speaker 1: have been fired in Daly Plaza as well to account
- 21:48Speaker 1: for certain other things. So you know, for me, I
- 21:55Speaker 1: get alarm bells when I start seeing researchers saying that
- 21:58Speaker 1: there's you know, seven, eight, nine, thirteen shots, you know,
- 22:02Speaker 1: and they're coming from every direction known demand. But he
- 22:08Speaker 1: lays them out. I don't I don't buy all that
- 22:13Speaker 1: because we have no witnesses that said that they heard
- 22:15Speaker 1: six to eight shots, not even with echoes. Okay, there's
- 22:19Speaker 1: not one, not one. But with that being said, you know,
- 22:29Speaker 1: for all it's its faults and warts and blemishes, this
- 22:34Speaker 1: still comes off as a beautiful book, a great primer
- 22:39Speaker 1: for newbies and old folks like us. I like, you
- 22:43Speaker 1: know that occasionally find something new and it's always good
- 22:47Speaker 1: to go back. So Joe, I'm gonna give this book,
- 22:53Speaker 1: and you know, just the kind of work that someone
- 22:58Speaker 1: has put out. Like, you know, this guy's been around
- 23:01Speaker 1: for a long time. He's been looking at this for
- 23:03Speaker 1: a long time. He has not oversaturated the conspiracy or
- 23:06Speaker 1: research community with books. You'll see some people that just
- 23:10Speaker 1: keep cranking fucking books out year after year after year
- 23:13Speaker 1: because they got a new theory or something, you know
- 23:15Speaker 1: what I mean. Like you can tell he put his
- 23:18Speaker 1: heart and soul into each book that he did to
- 23:22Speaker 1: make it as beautiful as possible and as expensive as possible.
- 23:28Speaker 1: So with that being said, Joe, I'm going to give
- 23:31Speaker 1: this book for everything that it is, not what it isn't,
- 23:35Speaker 1: but everything that it is. I'm giving this book a
- 23:39Speaker 1: nine out of ten.
- 23:41Speaker 2: Guns up, baby, I believe that is tied for our
- 23:49Speaker 2: highest score. And yeah, I mean, as we do these reviews,
- 23:55Speaker 2: like we say at nauseum, we we tried to see
- 24:02Speaker 2: what the author was trying to achieve. And the subtitle
- 24:06Speaker 2: being the Complete Photographic Record of the jfk Assassination. He
- 24:10Speaker 2: has every photograph from the from the arrival in Dallas
- 24:14Speaker 2: to the motorcade, to the aftermath to Parkland to tip
- 24:20Speaker 2: it to on and on not right. Guy obviously had
- 24:26Speaker 2: a was very involved you know, Oliver Stone using him
- 24:32Speaker 2: as a advisor right to his movie. Uh, because I
- 24:41Speaker 2: think the goal was to just you know, because every
- 24:47Speaker 2: I don't think there's a I could be wrong. I
- 24:51Speaker 2: don't think there's a page in this book that doesn't
- 24:54Speaker 2: have a picture with a caption or something like that,
- 24:58Speaker 2: or a document or something thing. Right. Uh, it's crazy,
- 25:03Speaker 2: And I think he did a great job. This might
- 25:08Speaker 2: be my favorite Wroten book. And I'm going to give
- 25:12Speaker 2: it a very very solid eight guns up. And I
- 25:23Speaker 2: am going to order the hardcover first edition because I
- 25:29Speaker 2: want to see these pictures in person. It's different than
- 25:33Speaker 2: seeing them online.
- 25:34Speaker 1: So well makes you give website support the man, to
- 25:40Speaker 1: support the.
- 25:41Speaker 2: Man, I will. He's a good he's a good guy.
- 25:44Speaker 2: He's he's been very nice and his wife is a
- 25:48Speaker 2: sweetheart as well. And good people, good intentions, and definitely
- 25:53Speaker 2: a book worth having. And like you said, Rob, definitely
