- 0:11Speaker 1: Thunder Thunder Thunder Thunder.
- 0:42Speaker 2: Happy Thursday, everybody. It's the Sean O'Connell Show. Oh, it's
- 0:50Speaker 2: great to be here.
- 0:51Speaker 3: Another gorgeous day in Salt Lake City. An eventful night
- 0:55Speaker 3: in the avenues. I will tell you the story on
- 0:58Speaker 3: the show today. One of the craziest things that's ever
- 1:01Speaker 3: happened in any neighborhood around Salt Lake City.
- 1:05Speaker 4: Oh, man.
- 1:06Speaker 3: Big football day. Lots to discuss. Devin Dampier edition with Deb.
- 1:10Speaker 3: Eric Weddle is going to join us. We'll check in
- 1:13Speaker 3: on the Iowa State side of things as Utah gets
- 1:16Speaker 3: ready for their first road trip of the year against
- 1:20Speaker 3: a Cyclones team that stands at 2-1 right now, wins
- 1:25Speaker 3: over Southeast Missouri and Bowling Green, bracketing a close loss
- 1:30Speaker 3: to a ranked Iowa team. By the way, tough schedule
- 1:35Speaker 3: for Iowa State in the early portion of the season,
- 1:39Speaker 3: at least as conference play goes.
- 1:40Speaker 2: They host Utah.
- 1:42Speaker 3: Then they've got a game against a much better West
- 1:45Speaker 3: Virginia team than I think any one of us thought
- 1:47Speaker 3: you'd be facing. Then they're on the road in back-to-back
- 1:51Speaker 3: weeks against BYU and Arizona. And you're like, oh, wow,
- 1:56Speaker 3: that's a tough little stretch. Yeah, and then guess what? Halloween,
- 1:59Speaker 3: Oklahoma State comes to Ames. So you've got five in
- 2:04Speaker 3: a row that are at least stiff tests, if not worse.
- 2:09Speaker 3: Good luck, Iowa State Cyclones. Good luck figuring out the
- 2:13Speaker 3: passing game. Good luck doing that against the University of Utah.
- 2:16Speaker 3: We'll talk about all that on the show today. We
- 2:22Speaker 3: have some things. The Utah Mammoth social media team, shout
- 2:24Speaker 3: out to them. They asked one of the important existential
- 2:27Speaker 3: questions of life. Whether maple syrup belongs in the pantry
- 2:35Speaker 3: or the fridge.
- 2:37Speaker 2: And I love that that's where they went with it.
- 2:39Speaker 3: And you got a bunch of hockey guys, of course,
- 2:41Speaker 3: half of whom are Canadian, telling you whether maple syrup
- 2:44Speaker 3: belongs in the pantry or the fridge. So that's a
- 2:48Speaker 3: great debate that we can have. I put a poll
- 2:50Speaker 3: question up to see what you guys think about it.
- 2:55Speaker 3: Right now, the pantry is winning in a landslide. Pantry
- 2:59Speaker 3: or fridge wins. I've stole the question from the Utah.
- 3:02Speaker 3: I didn't steal it. I am conveying further the Utah man,
- 3:06Speaker 3: but I tagged him and I didn't pretend.
- 3:07Speaker 2: It was my idea.
- 3:08Speaker 4: 877-353-0700.
- 3:15Speaker 2: Always good to hear from you.
- 3:19Speaker 3: Of minor note for me, Utah football made the social
- 3:24Speaker 3: media announcement as we often get. They're wearing the traditional
- 3:28Speaker 3: all red on the road. So I guess Iowa State,
- 3:32Speaker 3: as the home team, opting.
- 3:33Speaker 2: To wear whites. That's interesting. I like that.
- 3:38Speaker 3: As most of you who've listened to the show know,
- 3:40Speaker 3: I am always red is bed-er. Red is better for
- 3:44Speaker 3: the University of Utah. The more red you get, the better.
- 3:48Speaker 3: And I feel like maybe Morgan Scali feels the same
- 3:51Speaker 3: way because they've gone very heavy on the red stuff.
- 3:54Speaker 3: We obviously saw the proud white helmet last week, but...
- 3:57Speaker 3: We got a fun show lined up. We'll talk about
- 3:59Speaker 3: all of it and more.
- 4:01Speaker 2: We're going to have to pull some sound.
- 4:05Speaker 3: The most recent comments from Joel Klatt about Utah football,
- 4:09Speaker 3: Tyson and James behind the glass. I don't know if
- 4:12Speaker 3: you saw Joel Klatt has some words about Utah football.
- 4:15Speaker 3: We'll have to cut some of those up and bring
- 4:17Speaker 3: them to the show today. A conversation from baseball actually
- 4:25Speaker 3: has me intrigued today. So, I get it. A lot
- 4:32Speaker 3: of us, until we get our own Major League Baseball team, which,
- 4:37Speaker 3: knock on wood, should be sooner than later, we don't
- 4:43Speaker 3: pay as much attention to baseball as a lot of
- 4:46Speaker 3: the country does. However, when something is said or done
- 4:50Speaker 3: in baseball that crosses over to the business of sport
- 4:53Speaker 3: in general, I think it's worth having a conversation about.
- 4:56Speaker 3: And in an era of NIL now... where you've got,
- 5:00Speaker 3: you know, a guessing game. It was always a guessing
- 5:03Speaker 3: game in recruiting, but you've got a guessing game now
- 5:05Speaker 3: that is incredibly high stakes and incredibly costly when it
- 5:10Speaker 3: comes to NIL. And you've got real life general managers
- 5:16Speaker 3: in college football that are working in conjunction with head
- 5:20Speaker 3: coaches and not necessarily owners in the same way that
- 5:25Speaker 3: NFL teams have and NBA teams have. But there are
- 5:28Speaker 3: authority figures that fill the role of owner in college
- 5:32Speaker 3: sports as well. The owner in a college sports team
- 5:37Speaker 3: is the university president or the chancellor, or as we
- 5:41Speaker 3: have seen in the case of places like Texas Tech
- 5:43Speaker 3: and maybe BYU basketball, it is a cabal or maybe
- 5:49Speaker 3: even sometimes an individual that controls the money, the inflows
- 5:54Speaker 3: and the outflows of booster cash. they function as the owners, right?
- 6:02Speaker 3: It's a real business now. It was always a business
- 6:05Speaker 3: in that the university has always made money and there
- 6:08Speaker 3: was always balance sheets and there's always profit and loss
- 6:11Speaker 3: and things like that. It's a business now in that
- 6:14Speaker 3: the roster management, the HR component is more of a
- 6:19Speaker 3: business than it's ever been. And because of that, you
- 6:22Speaker 3: have contracts effectively. And we have, we've seen now battles
- 6:27Speaker 3: over the enforceability of NIL contracts. The NIL, battles over,
- 6:30Speaker 3: you know, what's proper and what's not in a non
- 6:34Speaker 3: collectively bargain space where there is no association for players
- 6:39Speaker 3: to protect them. There is no, you know, everyone can
- 6:41Speaker 3: find their own lawyer and we've seen all the injunctions
- 6:44Speaker 3: granted and then killed and then regranted and then restraining
- 6:48Speaker 3: orders placed and all that crazy stuff.
- 6:50Speaker 2: It's, it's a wild, wild, wild West because of this
- 6:55Speaker 2: business aspect to it.
- 6:56Speaker 3: When you hear a star player talk about their view
- 7:00Speaker 3: on compensation, talk about their view on what I am
- 7:04Speaker 3: owed or what I am not owed, and to speak
- 7:06Speaker 3: truthfully about that, it's really fascinating to me. And even
- 7:10Speaker 3: though Vlad Guerrero Jr. is right now a Canadian baseball
- 7:16Speaker 3: player playing for the Toronto Blue Jays, his thoughts on
- 7:23Speaker 3: this I think are potentially reflective of what the attitudes
- 7:27Speaker 3: in college football, in the NFL, in Major League Baseball,
- 7:31Speaker 3: in the NBA might be. And I think he brings
- 7:37Speaker 3: up a problem that hopefully we can get around conversationally
- 7:41Speaker 3: and hopefully we can get around philosophically in.
- 7:45Speaker 2: A meaningful way up on the Hill. But I'm sure
- 7:49Speaker 2: a lot of you have seen this. He made comments
- 7:52Speaker 2: last week and then doubled down. about the idea that he,
- 8:01Speaker 2: he got a $ 500 million contract. Okay.
- 8:06Speaker 3: He's having a really disappointing year. It's a 14 year deal.
- 8:11Speaker 3: He is a first baseman who's in the first season
- 8:15Speaker 3: of a 14 year deal, the largest in franchise history
- 8:19Speaker 3: for the blue Jays, but that is par for the course, right?
- 8:22Speaker 3: Your star player for every college team and every professional franchise.
- 8:27Speaker 3: When payday comes up, they're going to sign the biggest deal.
- 8:31Speaker 3: They're going to sign the best deal, right? They're going
- 8:33Speaker 3: to be like, oh, there's going to be an offensive
- 8:36Speaker 3: like Kelvin Obot someday for the.
- 8:38Speaker 2: University of Utah.
- 8:39Speaker 3: If the Utes want to keep him and he lives
- 8:41Speaker 3: up to his potential, you're going to have to pay
- 8:44Speaker 3: that guy more than you paid Spencer Fano. Even if
- 8:47Speaker 3: he's not a better player ever than Spencer Fano, even
- 8:51Speaker 3: if he's not a first round draft pick and he's
- 8:52Speaker 3: a second round draft pick instead, you're going to have
- 8:55Speaker 3: to pay more than you.
- 8:56Speaker 2: Paid, right?
- 8:58Speaker 3: The most likely scenario is that if you get another
- 9:03Speaker 3: year out of Devin Dampier after this one, you got
- 9:05Speaker 3: to pay him more than you paid him this year.
- 9:07Speaker 3: If you want to keep bird Ficklin around for the
- 9:10Speaker 3: longterm for his entire career, you're probably going to have
- 9:12Speaker 3: to pay bird Ficklin more than Devin Dampier ever made.
- 9:15Speaker 3: That's just the escalation and the inflation of a market
- 9:19Speaker 3: in college football. Of course, the protect Scott to protect
- 9:22Speaker 3: college sports act is trying to, uh, to put a
- 9:26Speaker 3: cap on these things and make it so that we
- 9:28Speaker 3: don't have just this ever ascending arms race.
- 9:31Speaker 2: But Vlad Guerrero was, I guess, kind of trying to
- 9:34Speaker 2: justify his, his bad season or talk about his thoughts on, well, man, the,
- 9:42Speaker 2: the bad season is unfortunate, especially because of the timing
- 9:48Speaker 2: when I just got my big payday and I've been
- 9:50Speaker 2: guilty of, I know that a lot of people might
- 9:53Speaker 2: dispute this. Other people might agree.
- 9:55Speaker 3: I've been guilty of saying when a guy gets paid,
- 9:58Speaker 3: he loses some of that hunger.
- 9:59Speaker 5: All right.
- 10:01Speaker 2: And we've seen it in other leagues. We saw it
- 10:03Speaker 2: with Hainsworth.
- 10:04Speaker 3: We saw it with Chris Johnson, who we only wish
- 10:07Speaker 3: good things for now as he's battling a very debilitating
- 10:10Speaker 3: and serious illness.
- 10:12Speaker 2: But, you know, it happens. I'm sure any sports fan knows.
- 10:16Speaker 3: Can bring up an example or two of like, oh, yeah,
- 10:18Speaker 3: this guy got paid and then he fell off. And
- 10:21Speaker 3: to combat that and maybe to justify it in his
- 10:24Speaker 3: own mind so that he's not blaming himself the same
- 10:28Speaker 3: way that the fans are blaming him, Vlad Guerrero effectively said,
- 10:31Speaker 3: you're paying me for what I already did, not for
- 10:34Speaker 3: future production, not for continuing to hit 40 home runs
- 10:38Speaker 3: a year.
- 10:41Speaker 2: And that.
- 10:43Speaker 3: Rubbed a lot of people the wrong way. That was
- 10:46Speaker 3: jarring for a lot of people to hear. Because that
- 10:50Speaker 3: is not the stance that a lot of sports fans take.
- 10:53Speaker 3: And I doubt that that's the stance that management takes.
- 10:56Speaker 3: There are very few people that are in good enough
- 10:58Speaker 3: standing from a sports business perspective to tell their bosses, well,
- 11:03Speaker 3: you're paying me because you owe me from before. Not
- 11:07Speaker 3: you're paying me for what I'm supposed to do now.
- 11:12Speaker 3: There are, I mean, very few guys like the, the
- 11:15Speaker 3: golden state warriors.
- 11:18Speaker 2: Are in some form or fashion.
- 11:20Speaker 3: They are paying Steph Curry for what Steph Curry has
- 11:22Speaker 3: already done for the franchise, right? He is 37% of
- 11:29Speaker 3: their entire salary cap in golden state right now. Steph
- 11:32Speaker 3: Curry is being paid, uh, like an emeritus professor. They
- 11:37Speaker 3: don't want him to leave. They don't want to have
- 11:41Speaker 3: to pay him max money. But if he's not going
- 11:44Speaker 3: to sign for less at this juncture of his career,
- 11:46Speaker 3: cause he's not like over the hill, over the hill
- 11:48Speaker 3: and his playing style translates for longer, but he's like
- 11:53Speaker 3: one of the rare people. that is being paid for something,
- 11:56Speaker 3: the groundwork that's already been done. I make an argument
- 11:59Speaker 3: that George Kittle, with the San Francisco 49ers, got a
- 12:03Speaker 3: deal that's probably more indicative of their appreciation for what
- 12:06Speaker 3: he's already done for them than what they expect him
- 12:09Speaker 3: to do in the future. You can get away with
- 12:11Speaker 3: these things more effectively in the NFL because if it's
- 12:14Speaker 3: not fully guaranteed money, you can give aging players $ 50
- 12:20Speaker 3: million average annual value, and if it's not working out,
- 12:24Speaker 3: you just cut them and you take a dead cap
- 12:26Speaker 3: hit potentially, but it's.
- 12:28Speaker 2: Different in the NFL.
- 12:29Speaker 3: Vlad Guerrero saying to the media, well, yeah, I know
- 12:34Speaker 3: I'm having a bad year and I know that it
- 12:36Speaker 3: makes all of you upset. His words were the contract
- 12:40Speaker 3: I got was based on what I did, not necessarily
- 12:43Speaker 3: what I'm going to do. I understand fans believe it's
- 12:49Speaker 3: the other way around. Sometimes I think that way too. Oh,
- 12:51Speaker 3: they gave me this money and I'm not doing enough,
- 12:53Speaker 3: but you know, I try my best and I'm working hard. Look,
- 12:58Speaker 3: fans are not expected to be rational about this. I
- 13:01Speaker 3: think players need to be a little bit more rational
- 13:04Speaker 3: about this when we're talking about massively inflated salaries at
- 13:09Speaker 3: every level. I think that for Utah football, every NIL deal,
- 13:17Speaker 3: is quite obviously paying someone for what they are supposed
- 13:23Speaker 3: to do moving forward. I think Vlad Guerrero's comments, if
- 13:26Speaker 3: they do apply at all in baseball, certainly do not
- 13:30Speaker 3: in college football. In the what have you done for
- 13:33Speaker 3: me lately, everything is year to year to year. The
- 13:36Speaker 3: contract I got was based on what I did, not
- 13:38Speaker 3: necessarily what I'm going to do.
- 13:40Speaker 2: This is a brutally toxic....
- 13:45Speaker 3: Mentality for any athlete to have. I mean, this is
- 13:50Speaker 3: incredibly damaging, especially for college age athletes, for young athletes.
- 13:58Speaker 3: If you think you deserve and deserve is such a
- 14:01Speaker 3: funny word, but if you think you deserve some crazy
- 14:04Speaker 3: paycheck because, oh, you did something, it's already done. I
- 14:10Speaker 3: proved to you what I'm capable of. So give me
- 14:14Speaker 3: the money because I proved that to you, but don't
- 14:16Speaker 3: expect me to continue performing in a way that confirms
- 14:21Speaker 3: your now newly held beliefs that I confirmed for you.
- 14:24Speaker 2: That's crazy.
- 14:26Speaker 3: That is a crazy, crazy mindset. We all know for
- 14:30Speaker 3: a fact that Devin Dampier and bird Ficklin were available
- 14:34Speaker 3: to Utah football last year on a, on a compared
- 14:37Speaker 3: to this year. A bargain basement discount. He got paid
- 14:46Speaker 3: for what he had already done at New Mexico, but
- 14:49Speaker 3: the expectation was, we expect you to do that and
- 14:53Speaker 3: more at the University of Utah. And then he did that,
- 14:56Speaker 3: and the salary goes up. And what was your expectation?
- 14:59Speaker 3: What is my expectation? What is Devin's expectation? What is
- 15:02Speaker 3: Morgan Scali's expectation when he shows up at Devin Dampier's
- 15:07Speaker 3: door and knocks on it and says, hey, I know
- 15:09Speaker 3: Jason Beck is going to Michigan. I know Kyle Whittingham
- 15:11Speaker 3: is going to Michigan. I want you here at Utah.
- 15:15Speaker 3: Let's do something special together. I know that when Morgan
- 15:18Speaker 3: Scali had that conversation, he knew it was going to
- 15:21Speaker 3: come with a price tag, and that price tag was
- 15:24Speaker 3: not based on, guess what, I'm going to pay you
- 15:27Speaker 3: back for what you already did. I know what you're
- 15:34Speaker 3: capable of because of what you already did. And let's
- 15:39Speaker 3: say it doubled his money. I'm going to double your
- 15:41Speaker 3: money because I think you can take us to even
- 15:43Speaker 3: higher heights. I think you can win us even more games.
- 15:46Speaker 3: I think you can stay even healthier. I think you
- 15:48Speaker 3: can be an even better leader. And so far, Devin
- 15:51Speaker 3: Dampier is on pace for a better season than he
- 15:54Speaker 3: had last year from an offensive production standpoint.
- 15:57Speaker 2: A better season than he had last year from a
- 15:59Speaker 2: turnover standpoint. I knock on wood.
- 16:01Speaker 3: A better season than he had last year from a
- 16:05Speaker 3: leadership standpoint, although that one is not as easy to measure.
- 16:08Speaker 3: Everyone that we have talked to would say so, and
- 16:11Speaker 3: our own experience in speaking with him, and he's joining
- 16:14Speaker 3: us for addition with Dev today, I think indicates this.
- 16:20Speaker 3: I think we can make an argument, and I have
- 16:23Speaker 3: made this argument, that the only Utah football player, multiple,
- 16:30Speaker 3: that maybe get to have this Vlad Guerrero mentality about
- 16:34Speaker 3: their NIL deals were Cam Rising and to some extent,
- 16:38Speaker 3: Brant Keithy. Cam Rising, a lot of people were really
- 16:43Speaker 3: bothered by the fact that he didn't play. And I
- 16:46Speaker 3: don't know what missing time for injury did for his
- 16:49Speaker 3: bottom line. I don't know if there was anything written
- 16:52Speaker 3: into his contract.
- 16:53Speaker 2: We have not had those detailed conversations. I'm not sure if.
- 17:00Speaker 3: Cameron rising, you know, thought he was going to get
- 17:02Speaker 3: a million bucks. And because he didn't actually play any games,
- 17:05Speaker 3: only got a couple hundred grand. I don't know if
- 17:07Speaker 3: he thought he was going to get a million and
- 17:09Speaker 3: he got a million without playing any games.
- 17:11Speaker 2: I truly don't know.
- 17:15Speaker 3: However, cam rising was an undercompensated performer for Utah in
- 17:20Speaker 3: two of its greatest seasons in history. And if he
- 17:24Speaker 3: got everything he was promised, without playing another down effectively,
- 17:30Speaker 3: without ever being healthy again, I'm okay with it.
- 17:33Speaker 2: You don't have to be as a Utah fan.
- 17:35Speaker 3: If Cam Rising got his full paycheck for the years
- 17:39Speaker 3: that he missed so much time, I'm okay with that
- 17:42Speaker 3: because he didn't get a big fat paycheck for the
- 17:45Speaker 3: Rose Bowl years and for the conference championship years.
- 17:48Speaker 2: I mean, second year he did.
- 17:51Speaker 1: Maybe not as high, but second year, both years were
- 17:55Speaker 1: the beginning of NIL season. But second year was like
- 17:58Speaker 1: year two. He certainly got like.
- 18:00Speaker 2: Think of, think of what cam rising. Think of if
- 18:03Speaker 2: you knew, right.
- 18:03Speaker 3: If there was a crystal ball available to you and
- 18:07Speaker 3: you knew what cam rising season in either of those
- 18:10Speaker 3: years was going to be camera kept rising. Didn't get
- 18:12Speaker 3: to start the first season of the PAC 12 championship.
- 18:17Speaker 3: I promise you he wasn't getting a fat bag, right?
- 18:20Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 18:20Speaker 2: That that's where I agree with you.
- 18:22Speaker 1: The first year, 2021, even though that was the first
- 18:24Speaker 1: year that you could give kids NIL, he wasn't getting much.
- 18:28Speaker 1: I think he certainly got his market value.
- 18:31Speaker 4: 2022.
- 18:31Speaker 2: Well, and he, he.
- 18:32Speaker 3: Probably got, he probably got somewhere close to market value.
- 18:37Speaker 3: I don't think he got, he it's almost certain that
- 18:41Speaker 3: he didn't get a value that.
- 18:45Speaker 2: Compared to how much value he brought. Right. And that's
- 18:49Speaker 2: probably right.
- 18:49Speaker 3: That's always been the argument with player compensation in college football.
- 18:55Speaker 3: Like Johnny Manziel, whatever illegal money in that hundred dollar
- 18:59Speaker 3: handshakes he got when he was at Texas A & M,
- 19:01Speaker 3: we've all seen the untold.
- 19:03Speaker 2: We've seen the 30 for 30. They did the, the,
- 19:07Speaker 2: they crunched the numbers. Johnny Manziel was worth $ 300 million
- 19:12Speaker 2: in a season to the university, right? Because his Heisman
- 19:16Speaker 2: trophy season was worth like $ 300 million to Texas A
- 19:20Speaker 2: & M. He did not get even a fraction of that, right?
- 19:23Speaker 3: I think you could look at what happened with cam
- 19:25Speaker 3: rising and his injury and the mishandling of it. And
- 19:29Speaker 3: the fact that his reputation got dragged unjustifiably in a
- 19:33Speaker 3: lot of cases. And even if, and I don't know
- 19:35Speaker 3: if he did, but even if he was given every
- 19:38Speaker 3: single dime that he'd been promised without playing, I'd be like,
- 19:41Speaker 3: you know what?
- 19:41Speaker 2: That's payback for the Rose bowls. Thank you. We're good.
- 19:45Speaker 3: You should have made a lot of money that, and
- 19:48Speaker 3: you know, maybe we'll get cam rising back on the
- 19:50Speaker 3: show and we can get into some of the details
- 19:52Speaker 3: on this, uh, to a lesser extent, maybe brand Keith,
- 19:55Speaker 3: he deserves the same treatment. Every other athlete in pro
- 19:58Speaker 3: sports and in college sports, in my opinion, has to
- 20:01Speaker 3: see what Vlad Guerrero jr. Is saying and reject this
- 20:05Speaker 3: wholesale because Don't even allow your dark lizard brain to
- 20:12Speaker 3: think this thing. If that thought enters your mind, get
- 20:17Speaker 3: rid of it. All of us as humans should do it.
- 20:22Speaker 3: As a professional athlete, a pseudo-professional athlete, you have to
- 20:31Speaker 3: feel a need to earn the next paycheck. Vlad Guerrero Jr.
- 20:36Speaker 3: 's comments, whether he intended them or not, by the way,
- 20:38Speaker 3: he doubled down. He went on a Dominican podcast or
- 20:40Speaker 3: a Dominican broadcast, and he doubled down on this. And
- 20:44Speaker 3: he said, no, like, people, that's, you can't expect somebody
- 20:49Speaker 3: to keep hitting 40 homers a year.
- 20:51Speaker 2: Yeah, you can. That's what the expectation is. And I
- 20:56Speaker 2: get it.
- 20:56Speaker 3: There's some market economics in here where you probably can't say,
- 21:02Speaker 3: all right, he's not going to have his best season
- 21:04Speaker 3: every single year, so what kind of average numbers do
- 21:07Speaker 3: we need from him? And if he stays near this average,
- 21:09Speaker 3: we'll feel like we got our money's worth. If he
- 21:11Speaker 3: doesn't stay near these averages, and they don't have to
- 21:13Speaker 3: be all that lofty, if he doesn't stay near these averages,
- 21:16Speaker 3: then this is a waste of money for the Toronto
- 21:20Speaker 3: Blue Jays. College football is in a place now where
- 21:23Speaker 3: you don't get to do the long-term extrapolation. These are
- 21:26Speaker 3: one-year deals, even when they're not one-year deals. We learned
- 21:29Speaker 3: that from Nico Iamaleava. We learned that to some extent
- 21:33Speaker 3: it looked like from the Bryce Underwood conversation, like, Hey man,
- 21:37Speaker 3: we're throwing a bunch of money at you. And it's
- 21:39Speaker 3: supposed to be a three-year deal or a four-year deal.
- 21:42Speaker 3: And then a lot of these guys are going back
- 21:43Speaker 3: to their schools and saying like, I'm glad I signed that.
- 21:46Speaker 3: And it was good for me then. However, now you're
- 21:49Speaker 3: going to pay me for what I already did and
- 21:51Speaker 3: what you think I'm going to do next. I was
- 21:55Speaker 3: blown away by not only this conversation from Vlad Guerrero Jr.,
- 22:00Speaker 3: but then the doubling down on this conversation and the
- 22:03Speaker 3: toxic mentality that it represents. In competition in a highly
- 22:07Speaker 3: demanding industry, you do not deserve, quote unquote, deserve competition.
- 22:12Speaker 3: Jack bleep for what you did yesterday.
- 22:15Speaker 2: That is why the NFL is like the most cutthroat
- 22:18Speaker 2: of all businesses. The NBA is so incredibly cutthroat. You
- 22:21Speaker 2: know what else is tough? Broadcasting man, our business. If
- 22:26Speaker 2: I tell ESPN 700 James for the next 30 seconds,
- 22:30Speaker 2: you get to be the boss again. You don't know.
- 22:31Speaker 4: Okay. Wow.
- 22:33Speaker 2: I all of a sudden I feel differently.
- 22:34Speaker 7: Okay.
- 22:35Speaker 2: Okay.
- 22:35Speaker 3: So you're the boss again. And I tell you, you
- 22:38Speaker 3: know what? Our ratings last year were good. I need
- 22:42Speaker 3: you to pay me and extend me, but don't expect
- 22:46Speaker 3: that you're paying me to continue getting those ratings. You're
- 22:50Speaker 3: paying me for the ratings I had last year. If
- 22:53Speaker 3: my ratings tank, like his, my performance stinks like Vlad's does.
- 22:59Speaker 3: You can't question whether or not that was a good
- 23:01Speaker 3: decision because you're paying me for what I already achieved.
- 23:05Speaker 2: Yeah, that sounds fair. Absolutely.
- 23:07Speaker 1: I will say this as a counterpoint to what you're saying.
- 23:11Speaker 1: Kobe Bryant, his last contract was paid for his 20
- 23:15Speaker 1: years of being an awesome Laker.
- 23:17Speaker 2: And there are some people.
- 23:20Speaker 1: There are examples of megastars getting paid for their legacy
- 23:28Speaker 1: and not for, hey, we expect you to continue to
- 23:31Speaker 1: be a superstar. Because Kobe's last two years, he was like,
- 23:35Speaker 1: He was an all-star his last year because he decided
- 23:37Speaker 1: to tell everyone it was going to be his last season.
- 23:39Speaker 1: He was a terrible player compared to what he used
- 23:42Speaker 1: to be. He was nowhere near an all-star. So there's
- 23:45Speaker 1: examples of that.
- 23:46Speaker 3: But you have to be Kobe, Bird, Magic, LeBron, Steph Curry.
- 23:52Speaker 3: Even Klay Thompson, who's a future Hall of Famer, Klay
- 23:56Speaker 3: Thompson doesn't get paid based on what he does.
- 24:01Speaker 2: Used to do.
- 24:02Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 24:02Speaker 1: I mean, the warriors just let him go and free
- 24:04Speaker 1: agency because he was not the same player.
- 24:06Speaker 2: Absolutely. You have to be.
- 24:08Speaker 3: And look, Vlad Guerrero maybe thinks that he's there already,
- 24:12Speaker 3: which is another toxic mentality.
- 24:14Speaker 2: That's another problem. If you, if Vlad Guerrero.
- 24:18Speaker 3: Justifies this or any athlete, I'm using him because he's
- 24:21Speaker 3: the verbal example here. If any athlete carries this mentality
- 24:26Speaker 3: into a contract negotiation, a future season, a current season,
- 24:30Speaker 3: the game you're playing tonight, practice this afternoon, if you
- 24:34Speaker 3: carry that with you, you are not what you think
- 24:39Speaker 3: you are. You are not the dog that your teammates
- 24:43Speaker 3: need you to be, that your coaches need you to be.
- 24:46Speaker 3: If you are a person like black Guerrero, who's obviously
- 24:49Speaker 3: in other worldly talent, he's an incredible player who has
- 24:53Speaker 3: achieved a great deal. He's already had more of a
- 24:56Speaker 3: career than a lot of guys in major league baseball
- 24:58Speaker 3: ever will. However, if he looks at it and says, well, yeah, see,
- 25:02Speaker 3: I am, I am in baseball. Like Steph Curry is
- 25:05Speaker 3: for the golden state warriors.
- 25:07Speaker 2: No, you're not. Yeah.
- 25:08Speaker 3: Like Steph has delivered championships, MVPs, and, and, probably a
- 25:14Speaker 3: billion dollars worth of merchandise sales. So yes, Kobe Bryant
- 25:19Speaker 3: and LeBron James, who, by the way, you notice how
- 25:22Speaker 3: LeBron James. is like LeBron James is playing for $ 3
- 25:26Speaker 3: million this year, three and a half million dollars this year.
- 25:29Speaker 2: Even LeBron doesn't get to do this. Not for the
- 25:32Speaker 2: Philadelphia 76ers, not for somebody new that like the NBA
- 25:37Speaker 2: owes LeBron James and immense debt financially, even though he's
- 25:42Speaker 2: already a billionaire based on his star performance in the NBA.
- 25:46Speaker 2: What he has done in the NBA and done for
- 25:49Speaker 2: the NBA and the way that he has carried the
- 25:51Speaker 2: mantle for 20 years of being the guy and done
- 25:55Speaker 2: so with mostly zero reproach and utmost class. And if
- 26:01Speaker 2: you don't like his politics, that's fine. But he's not
- 26:04Speaker 2: the dude who you hear stories about with domestic violence.
- 26:08Speaker 3: And he's not the dude you hear stories about with drugs.
- 26:10Speaker 3: And he's not the dude that you hear stories about
- 26:12Speaker 3: with a bunch of business fraud or any of the
- 26:14Speaker 3: other things that athletes get caught up in. If anybody
- 26:17Speaker 3: deserves that emeritus status that, you know what? Pay this
- 26:21Speaker 3: guy his golden parachute money for however long. It's LeBron James.
- 26:25Speaker 3: And even he doesn't get that from a new franchise.
- 26:28Speaker 1: So like because no franchise had enough money to give
- 26:32Speaker 1: him that, I think he would have gotten that.
- 26:34Speaker 2: But he would have demanded it. He would have demanded it.
- 26:38Speaker 1: If anybody had that kind of cap space and look,
- 26:40Speaker 1: he didn't because they didn't have the caps and.
- 26:42Speaker 3: He's, he's probably passed. He's certainly passed the need for
- 26:45Speaker 3: any more money. And now it's about, you know, like
- 26:47Speaker 3: seeing if he can win another championship and further himself
- 26:50Speaker 3: in that conversation.
- 26:51Speaker 2: But regardless, right.
- 26:53Speaker 3: And it's different in the NBA and it's different in
- 26:55Speaker 3: the NFL because of the existence of the salary cap.
- 26:58Speaker 3: But if you're a, if you're a baseball player or
- 27:00Speaker 3: I think more important, if you're a college athlete right now,
- 27:04Speaker 3: Who's just like, yeah, man, you're paying me for what
- 27:06Speaker 3: I did last year. No, we are not. That's not true.
- 27:11Speaker 3: This mentality needs to be stricken from the record.
- 27:16Speaker 2: Get it out of here.
- 27:17Speaker 3: Vlad Guerrero needs to be castigated. This is not the
- 27:22Speaker 3: way that a top level athlete should think.
- 27:25Speaker 2: If you're a high school player and you've got any
- 27:29Speaker 2: of this, like evil.
- 27:30Speaker 3: Little worm living in your head or your heart, If
- 27:34Speaker 3: you're someone at the start of the journey, not in
- 27:36Speaker 3: the middle like Vlad Guerrero is, this is not the way.
- 27:44Speaker 3: It's a conversation in sports. I think it should be
- 27:47Speaker 3: a bigger conversation in sports. The contract you are paid
- 27:51Speaker 3: is for continuing your production or even better, Increasing your production.
- 27:57Speaker 3: The reason they gave you the big number is because
- 27:59Speaker 3: you proved something that says, I know what this person
- 28:02Speaker 3: is capable of, and I can expect.
- 28:05Speaker 2: This moving forward. You have to. Wild stuff from Vlad Guerrero.
- 28:13Speaker 2: Do you want my take on the maple syrup thing?
- 28:17Speaker 2: Pantry or fridge maple syrup.
- 28:19Speaker 3: So not enough information to answer the question. I know
- 28:23Speaker 3: you're going to say, is it open or is it
- 28:24Speaker 3: not open?
- 28:25Speaker 4: No, no.
- 28:25Speaker 1: I'm going to say, is it real maple syrup or
- 28:27Speaker 1: is it log cabin, high fructose corn syrup?
- 28:30Speaker 2: Well, that stuff is disgusting. First of all.
- 28:33Speaker 1: So if it's a real maple syrup, it'll spoil in
- 28:35Speaker 1: the pantry. So it's got to go in the fridge.
- 28:36Speaker 2: You know how long it takes to spoil in the
- 28:38Speaker 2: pantry though? Yeah, probably a long time. Like a really
- 28:42Speaker 2: long time.
- 28:42Speaker 1: But that's, I mean, that's the way it, the high
- 28:45Speaker 1: fructose corn syrup stuff, log cabin, whatever brand, put that
- 28:49Speaker 1: in the pantry.
- 28:50Speaker 3: That, that, that fake maple syrup is shelf stable until
- 28:56Speaker 3: the earth hurdles into the sun in several million millennia.
- 29:00Speaker 3: Like that stuff will be, it'll be that log cabin
- 29:05Speaker 3: stuff and cockroaches with the robot cockroaches will be eating
- 29:09Speaker 3: the log with the robots from Wally, like building trash
- 29:13Speaker 3: castles around all of it.
- 29:15Speaker 2: I'm a pantry guy. We're we're, we're pantry for the
- 29:18Speaker 2: maple syrup. All right.
- 29:19Speaker 3: And I was like, Oh, I'll just like, When the
- 29:22Speaker 3: Utah mammoth put out the social media video, I was like, okay, I'll,
- 29:25Speaker 3: I'll just defer to the expertise of the Canadians.
- 29:28Speaker 2: Cause that's like their thing. And then a bunch of
- 29:31Speaker 2: them were like fridge. And I was like, what?
- 29:33Speaker 3: And then the other Canadian guys were like, ah, Quebec,
- 29:36Speaker 3: Quebec is the fridge. I was like, oh, well, French Canadians,
- 29:38Speaker 3: do we want to emulate French Canadians? Even Canada doesn't
- 29:41Speaker 3: like them.
- 29:42Speaker 2: 877-353-0700.
- 29:46Speaker 3: Love your feedback on anything we talk about on the show.
- 29:51Speaker 3: We got to take a break here. Eugene repay covers
- 29:54Speaker 3: the Iowa state cyclones for the Des Moines register.
- 29:56Speaker 2: He joins us next to talk about this weekend's game.
- 29:59Speaker 7: In Ames.
- 30:01Speaker 2: It's Utah's number one sports talk in your home of
- 30:03Speaker 2: the Utes, ESPN 700.
- 30:04Speaker 8: You're listening to the Sean O'Connell Show from the Murdoch
- 30:12Speaker 8: Hyundai Studio of ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 30:25Speaker 3: Welcome back to the Sean O'Connell Show. Welcome in Eugene Rapay,
- 30:31Speaker 3: who's kind enough to join us from the Des Moines Register.
- 30:34Speaker 3: Covers Iowa State University. You can see him there at
- 30:38Speaker 3: DM Register or at USA Today.
- 30:40Speaker 2: Some of the writing. Eugene Rapay, welcome to the show.
- 30:43Speaker 2: How are you?
- 30:44Speaker 4: I'm great.
- 30:44Speaker 9: Thanks for having me on, Sean.
- 30:46Speaker 2: Appreciate you giving us some time here.
- 30:48Speaker 3: So give me the overall outlook right now in Ames
- 30:52Speaker 3: and in Iowa in general of this matchup as the Utes.
- 30:55Speaker 2: Come to town.
- 30:56Speaker 10: I think if you're an Iowa State fan, you're excited
- 30:59Speaker 10: for this. So far, the Cyclones have exceeded expectations. When
- 31:03Speaker 10: you bring in a new coach, you have 84 newcomers.
- 31:06Speaker 10: It's a massive roster turnover after the most successful coaching
- 31:10Speaker 10: era in program history. There was definitely a lot of uncertainty,
- 31:14Speaker 10: a lot of skepticism. They showed that they can hang
- 31:17Speaker 10: with power conference opposition. When they played Iowa rival Iowa
- 31:21Speaker 10: close in the Cy Hawk game, they bulldoze their way
- 31:24Speaker 10: past inferior competition like SEMO and Bowling Green last week.
- 31:28Speaker 10: And now you finally start big 12 play against, but
- 31:32Speaker 10: in my opinion, one of the best teams in the
- 31:34Speaker 10: big 12 and in the country, probably.
- 31:36Speaker 9: Going to make a championship game appearance.
- 31:39Speaker 10: But you know, you finally get to see how you
- 31:41Speaker 10: measure up in conference play against the Utah team. That's
- 31:45Speaker 10: just so dynamic on both sides of the ball. And
- 31:47Speaker 10: now we're going to get to see like, or have
- 31:50Speaker 10: another data point to figure out how legitimate or how
- 31:54Speaker 10: can Iowa state hang or how competitive will they be
- 31:57Speaker 10: as we start to go deeper into conference play and
- 31:59Speaker 10: into the season.
- 32:01Speaker 3: When you, when you threw out that number of newcomers,
- 32:04Speaker 3: even though I like, I think I already heard it
- 32:06Speaker 3: or I'd read it somewhere.
- 32:08Speaker 2: I balked at it again. Like what?
- 32:10Speaker 3: No, that can't be like, it's just such an insane
- 32:14Speaker 3: thing in college football. And, and, you know, in the,
- 32:17Speaker 3: the big 12, especially sure. If you're, if you're talking about,
- 32:20Speaker 3: you know, an FCS program that. lost the coach to
- 32:24Speaker 3: a higher division, and maybe got picked over roster-wise.
- 32:27Speaker 2: All right, makes sense.
- 32:28Speaker 3: But Iowa State, they're at least a marginally proud football program.
- 32:34Speaker 3: It feels like this kind of thing should not happen.
- 32:36Speaker 3: Was there a sense of injustice for many of the fans,
- 32:40Speaker 3: or did their names feel like it was inevitable that
- 32:43Speaker 3: Matt Campbell would eventually move on and that under the
- 32:46Speaker 3: new rules he'd take a lot with him?
- 32:49Speaker 10: I think just with the way that college sports is,
- 32:51Speaker 10: you definitely expected some players to leave, but for Iowa
- 32:54Speaker 10: state fans, it just seemed like heartbreak every day from
- 32:57Speaker 10: December 5th, when Campbell announced that he was leaving for
- 33:00Speaker 10: Penn state and then Jimmy Rogers was hired. It felt
- 33:03Speaker 10: like every other day, there was a new player announcing
- 33:06Speaker 10: that they were leaving. And so for Iowa state fans,
- 33:08Speaker 10: there was getting their heart ripped out every other day,
- 33:11Speaker 10: every week. And there was definitely a sense of injustice.
- 33:14Speaker 2: Sure.
- 33:14Speaker 9: People anticipated departures, some departures, some.
- 33:17Speaker 10: To go with Matt Campbell, but 84, that was not
- 33:21Speaker 10: what anybody expected. And you also have to factor in
- 33:24Speaker 10: the guy that graduated last year as well. So there
- 33:26Speaker 10: was even way more guys that were gone from, from
- 33:29Speaker 10: last season. So it was definitely a bitter pill to
- 33:32Speaker 10: swallow for Iowa state fans. And it's been a surprise
- 33:36Speaker 10: so far with just how well they've been able to
- 33:38Speaker 10: do in this early part of the season.
- 33:40Speaker 9: But now Utah is going to provide a whole other challenge.
- 33:43Speaker 9: And I think there's definitely.
- 33:44Speaker 10: Excitement to be able to host a top 25 team
- 33:47Speaker 10: for the first time under Jimmy Rogers and also the
- 33:50Speaker 10: first Big 12 opponent or the first Big 12 game
- 33:53Speaker 10: of the Jimmy Rogers era.
- 33:55Speaker 3: I'll start with the positive for Iowa State offensively. They've
- 33:58Speaker 3: got right now the top producing running back, in the conference,
- 34:02Speaker 3: although we're just now getting into conference play in earnest.
- 34:05Speaker 3: And the run game overall is respectable, kind of right
- 34:08Speaker 3: in the middle of the pack in this conference. Give
- 34:12Speaker 3: me a sense of how sustainable that is as the
- 34:16Speaker 3: competition ramps up with Utah coming to town.
- 34:19Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 34:19Speaker 10: So new offensive coordinator, Tyler roll, who was previously the
- 34:23Speaker 10: tight ends coach at the Detroit with the Detroit lions.
- 34:26Speaker 10: He also was the running backs coach at Iowa state
- 34:28Speaker 10: two years ago under Campbell. He came back and his
- 34:31Speaker 10: philosophy on offense is run, run, run, run a lot,
- 34:34Speaker 10: build off the run, use RPOs, use play action. So
- 34:37Speaker 10: the rushing attack is just paramount to what Iowa state
- 34:40Speaker 10: wants to do. So far, the offensive line has done.
- 34:43Speaker 9: A great job.
- 34:43Speaker 10: They've given up only one sack minimal TFLs. So they've
- 34:47Speaker 10: been paving the way against Iowa. I think was a
- 34:50Speaker 10: big barometer to show that this offensive line and this
- 34:53Speaker 10: rushing attack can move the ball. They weren't able to
- 34:56Speaker 10: finish drives, which is something that I would state is,
- 34:58Speaker 10: is harping on and, and the passing game still needs
- 35:01Speaker 10: to open up, but the rushing attack and what Aiden
- 35:03Speaker 10: floor has been able to do along with complimentary backs,
- 35:06Speaker 10: Cameron Petaway and Arnold Barnes of third has been, given
- 35:10Speaker 10: Iowa state a good foundation or a good way to
- 35:13Speaker 10: push forward on offense, but there's still more work that
- 35:15Speaker 10: needs to be done. But Aiden floor has been a
- 35:17Speaker 10: tremendous surprise. The guy was a walk on two years ago.
- 35:20Speaker 10: He's now the premier running back and.
- 35:23Speaker 9: He's a co-captain. He stayed for the Jimmy Rogers there.
- 35:26Speaker 10: And he's been one of the pivotal guys on offense
- 35:29Speaker 10: this season.
- 35:32Speaker 3: On the flip side of that offensive coin is a
- 35:34Speaker 3: passing game that has struggled to get going so far.
- 35:39Speaker 3: Is this a targets problem, a protection problem, a quarterbacking
- 35:43Speaker 3: problem for Iowa State?
- 35:45Speaker 10: Right now, I think it's a combination of the wide
- 35:47Speaker 10: receivers haven't really stood out yet. There isn't really a
- 35:51Speaker 10: receiver you could look at right now and be like, man,
- 35:53Speaker 10: when it's third and long or when it's second and long,
- 35:56Speaker 10: this is the guy that Jalen Rainer needs to get
- 35:59Speaker 10: the ball to in order to advance the change or
- 36:01Speaker 10: look for a big play or a spark when you
- 36:03Speaker 10: need it. Jalen Rainer himself, while he has been pretty
- 36:07Speaker 10: good at making decisions and taking care of the ball,
- 36:10Speaker 10: his accuracy and his efficiency in the passing game. Hasn't
- 36:13Speaker 10: been what anybody expected it to be or what, what
- 36:16Speaker 10: they want it to be. He's only completing about 52%
- 36:19Speaker 10: of his passes. The ball placement hasn't been ideal. He'd
- 36:22Speaker 10: been missing open guys. It seems like that this is
- 36:25Speaker 10: still a Patrick offense. That's still getting used to one another.
- 36:30Speaker 10: There's a whole new coaching staff, obviously, but all these
- 36:33Speaker 10: players haven't played together. And there's just a lack of
- 36:36Speaker 10: cohesion that hasn't really shown itself yet. It seems like
- 36:39Speaker 10: the running game has improved week to week. The passing
- 36:43Speaker 10: game has just continued to be very inconsistent. There are
- 36:46Speaker 10: definitely moments, but for the most part, like you mentioned,
- 36:49Speaker 10: it hasn't been pretty so far.
- 36:50Speaker 2: For the small contingent of Utah fans, they're going to
- 36:55Speaker 2: travel and see this game on the road in Ames.
- 36:57Speaker 2: What should they expect?
- 37:00Speaker 10: I think they should expect Iowa state fans to still
- 37:03Speaker 10: come out. I think the weather is not supposed to
- 37:05Speaker 10: be ideal. And also for just for Iowa state fans,
- 37:09Speaker 10: you know, you go from the back Campbell era, you
- 37:12Speaker 10: loved what he was able to do and a successful
- 37:15Speaker 10: run of players and all the standouts, you lose all
- 37:18Speaker 10: of that.
- 37:19Speaker 9: And despite everything.
- 37:20Speaker 10: That has happened over the last eight, nine months, the
- 37:22Speaker 10: fans have been crazy loyal.
- 37:24Speaker 9: Like I, you know, I I'm, I'm from New York.
- 37:26Speaker 10: So I'm used to Ben Waggoner's like, Oh, This is,
- 37:29Speaker 10: this team has lost this player.
- 37:31Speaker 9: This team lost this.
- 37:32Speaker 10: Coach fan interest plummets and Iowa state, the fans still
- 37:37Speaker 10: come out and they provide a crazy game day experience.
- 37:40Speaker 10: I think the tailgating to the fan atmosphere in the stadium,
- 37:43Speaker 10: like they still show up weekend and week out. And
- 37:45Speaker 10: I think they're going to be very charged up for
- 37:47Speaker 10: a top 25 matchup.
- 37:48Speaker 9: So it's going to be a, an interesting environment.
- 37:50Speaker 10: Even in the rain.
- 37:53Speaker 3: What is the what is sort of the hierarchy of
- 37:56Speaker 3: sports interest between men's basketball and football in names? Like
- 38:01Speaker 3: if you if you go to an Iowa State alum
- 38:04Speaker 3: who still lives nearby and they've got a finite budget
- 38:08Speaker 3: and you say you get season tickets to either football
- 38:10Speaker 3: or basketball, what are they choosing?
- 38:12Speaker 10: I think if you ask them over the last few years,
- 38:14Speaker 10: it was definitely football, then men's basketball. But I feel
- 38:18Speaker 10: like after the turnover and what has happened with football,
- 38:22Speaker 10: it seems like some of the fans that I've spoken
- 38:24Speaker 10: to or just know from the few years I've been here,
- 38:28Speaker 10: it seems like some of them are starting to move
- 38:29Speaker 10: some of that interest or move some of that ticket
- 38:32Speaker 10: investment into men's basketball now. Now that TJ Otzelberger has
- 38:35Speaker 10: done a great job with just consistency and consistency There's
- 38:38Speaker 10: still a lot of uncertainty with the Jimmy Rogers era,
- 38:41Speaker 10: despite it being off to a pretty good start so far.
- 38:43Speaker 10: But I think for a long time, it was football,
- 38:47Speaker 10: a pretty sizable gap that meant basketball. Now the gap
- 38:50Speaker 10: has shrunk a lot.
- 38:53Speaker 3: I was mentioning this in my opening segment today before
- 38:55Speaker 3: you came on. Look, it's always a tough out when
- 38:59Speaker 3: Utah comes to town. It's not going to be an
- 39:01Speaker 3: easy game for the Utes either. The schedule for Iowa
- 39:05Speaker 3: State in these next four or five weeks is Looks
- 39:08Speaker 3: like kind of a bear.
- 39:10Speaker 2: Utah, West Virginia, both of those at home.
- 39:13Speaker 3: Back-to-back road games, I'm not telling you anything you don't know,
- 39:16Speaker 3: against BYU and Arizona. I still think Arizona's a good team.
- 39:20Speaker 3: And then Oklahoma State, we'll find out before then what
- 39:23Speaker 3: they really are, but at their ceiling, they're good enough
- 39:25Speaker 3: to beat a very, very talented Oregon team.
- 39:29Speaker 2: He got back.
- 39:30Speaker 3: To back to back to back to back. Really tough
- 39:33Speaker 3: test for this Iowa State team.
- 39:35Speaker 2: What is that stretch going to look like?
- 39:37Speaker 10: I think this is going to be a very telling stretch.
- 39:39Speaker 10: I think that's going to be one that's going to test.
- 39:42Speaker 10: I was state not only on the field, but also
- 39:45Speaker 10: just in the locker room.
- 39:46Speaker 9: How are they going to handle this? There's going to.
- 39:48Speaker 10: Be inevitable losses. I looked at this going into the year.
- 39:51Speaker 10: Like if they don't win against West Virginia, they're going
- 39:55Speaker 10: to be underdogs and all these other games that you
- 39:58Speaker 10: Matt mentioned in these, in the five game stretch. they
- 40:01Speaker 10: could potentially start conference play one and four. Oh, and five,
- 40:06Speaker 10: two and three. Like that's not what Iowa state fans
- 40:09Speaker 10: are used to. That's not what, the program has done
- 40:12Speaker 10: in recent years, like it's going to be rough at times.
- 40:15Speaker 10: And the opponents that they're facing too, are just all talented.
- 40:19Speaker 10: Like I really love this Utah team. Then, like you
- 40:21Speaker 10: mentioned after this, they got to play West Virginia, who
- 40:24Speaker 10: seems beatable on paper, but can cook and that rushing attack.
- 40:27Speaker 10: And they got that big win against Virginia recently. So
- 40:31Speaker 10: they're looking better. And then of course, you know, you
- 40:33Speaker 10: got BYU, Arizona and all that. And I, I still
- 40:35Speaker 10: think that, you know, anytime you go on the road, it's,
- 40:38Speaker 10: it's never easy. So this is going to be a
- 40:41Speaker 10: very telling stretch.
- 40:42Speaker 9: For Iowa state to see.
- 40:43Speaker 10: How competitive are they, but also how are they going
- 40:46Speaker 10: to handle the shortcomings or if the losses come, because
- 40:50Speaker 10: if you're one in four to start big 12 play,
- 40:53Speaker 10: can you rally back from that? How do you handle that?
- 40:56Speaker 9: Does the conference go, does the confidence go out the window?
- 40:59Speaker 10: Does the morale go down the toilet? How are they
- 41:01Speaker 10: going to handle this stretch? So I think it's going
- 41:03Speaker 10: to be very telling in many ways.
- 41:05Speaker 3: I know that there's, Programs are in two different places,
- 41:08Speaker 3: but both Utah and Iowa state have brand new coaches
- 41:12Speaker 3: and I don't expect fans to be reasonable, but I,
- 41:16Speaker 3: I asked the question before the season began for Utah fans,
- 41:19Speaker 3: what is an acceptable first year for Morgan Scali? And
- 41:22Speaker 3: there were a lot of people who with a straight
- 41:24Speaker 3: face said, he's got to go 10 and two.
- 41:27Speaker 2: And I'm like, this is a first year head coach.
- 41:29Speaker 2: What are we doing? I don't necessarily feel that way.
- 41:32Speaker 3: And I don't know the level of like insane fanaticism
- 41:36Speaker 3: in Ames, Iowa, but what would be a reasonable baseline
- 41:40Speaker 3: performance for Jimmy Rogers in his first year as the
- 41:43Speaker 3: Cyclones head coach?
- 41:45Speaker 10: I think the expectations and uncertainty was so all over
- 41:48Speaker 10: the place that it felt like people would have been
- 41:50Speaker 10: happy with like a five and seven season. And then
- 41:53Speaker 10: you come back and then, you know, given all that
- 41:55Speaker 10: you lost, you have another year and you go right
- 41:57Speaker 10: back at it. I think the best case scenario was
- 42:00Speaker 10: a bowl appearance. You get six wins and you get
- 42:03Speaker 10: to the post, you know, no one really thought would happen.
- 42:08Speaker 10: And I still think that that's kind of like the
- 42:09Speaker 10: same sense, especially now that I was stated started two
- 42:12Speaker 10: and one and they've looked better than fans and media
- 42:16Speaker 10: and people seem to have initially thought they would do.
- 42:19Speaker 10: So now a bowl game is pretty doable. It's pretty,
- 42:22Speaker 10: it's not a unreasonable ask anymore. So now I think
- 42:25Speaker 10: the expectation really is if they can get to a
- 42:27Speaker 10: bowl game, six wins or keep it interesting where they're
- 42:31Speaker 10: possibly in position For that six wins, you don't want
- 42:34Speaker 10: it to be where they're out of the running early.
- 42:37Speaker 10: Like if they're going into November and they're at five
- 42:39Speaker 10: wins or they're at four wins and they're searching to
- 42:41Speaker 10: get the six, I think that that would be a
- 42:43Speaker 10: successful first season for Jimmy Rogers. And I think that
- 42:46Speaker 10: was the sentiment that I've gotten from a lot of
- 42:49Speaker 10: fans this offseason.
- 42:51Speaker 3: Home whites for, it looks like a whiteout game for
- 42:55Speaker 3: the Cyclones. Did you know that was going to be
- 42:57Speaker 3: a thing? I was surprised to see Utah wearing red.
- 43:01Speaker 2: On the road.
- 43:02Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 43:03Speaker 9: Yeah. They usually do their white out game.
- 43:05Speaker 10: And I, and I think going in, usually it's like
- 43:07Speaker 10: the first, I don't know if it's always this way,
- 43:10Speaker 10: but it seems like it's always the first big 12
- 43:13Speaker 10: home conference game. They do a white out. It's not
- 43:16Speaker 10: going to be great weather. So I don't know, you know,
- 43:18Speaker 10: they'll get those white shirts or white clothes dirty, but yeah,
- 43:22Speaker 10: it should add to the atmosphere on Saturday.
- 43:25Speaker 3: When an Iowan says it's not going to be great weather,
- 43:27Speaker 3: it's probably different than when a Utah says it's not
- 43:30Speaker 3: going to be great weather. So how much rain are
- 43:32Speaker 3: we expecting here?
- 43:35Speaker 10: So I just saw a headline this morning, and I
- 43:37Speaker 10: was joking with a colleague earlier that it feels like
- 43:39Speaker 10: we're in the Pacific Northwest and we feel like we're
- 43:42Speaker 10: in Britain. And I think the headline said that we've
- 43:46Speaker 10: seen more rain over the last three weeks than Seattle did.
- 43:49Speaker 10: And that's something that I've never really seen since we
- 43:52Speaker 10: were in Iowa. It's been a very rainy stretch. And
- 43:55Speaker 10: then I saw that it's supposed to turn back out.
- 43:57Speaker 10: We get a little break today, but it's supposed to
- 43:59Speaker 10: turn back on tomorrow and Sunday. Sorry, tomorrow and Saturday.
- 44:05Speaker 4: Eugene.
- 44:06Speaker 3: I hope you enjoy the weekend, although not too much
- 44:09Speaker 3: because we're the home of the Utes and a loss
- 44:11Speaker 3: would be very bad for me to have to talk
- 44:13Speaker 3: about coming up on Monday, but I appreciate you giving
- 44:16Speaker 3: us some time today.
- 44:17Speaker 2: Thank you.
- 44:18Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 44:18Speaker 9: Thanks for having me, Sean. And I hope you guys
- 44:21Speaker 9: enjoy the game.
- 44:22Speaker 3: Eugene repay kind enough to join us as an Iowa
- 44:25Speaker 3: state insider from the Des Moines register.
- 44:27Speaker 2: Big thanks to him. And look, this is Iowa state.
- 44:32Speaker 3: When you've got anything more than like 40 newcomers in
- 44:36Speaker 3: your program, you can really start to ramp your expectations down.
- 44:41Speaker 2: 50, 60.
- 44:44Speaker 3: It's probably a loss, an extra loss on the schedule.
- 44:51Speaker 3: When we're talking 70 and 80 newcomers in a program,
- 44:55Speaker 3: I mean, anything positive is a positive. That is a,
- 45:01Speaker 3: A complete remaking of a roster. That's like being a
- 45:06Speaker 3: first-year school in Division I football almost.
- 45:09Speaker 2: That's bananas. Big thanks to Eugene Ruppe.
- 45:14Speaker 3: All right, a Thursday night football preview as the Packers
- 45:16Speaker 3: and Falcons square off tonight at 615 on Prime. PGA
- 45:20Speaker 3: Tour leaderboard update. And I tweeted about it. I'm going
- 45:26Speaker 3: to tell the story in hour number two. I touched
- 45:30Speaker 3: a wild bear. With my fingers. I touched a wild bear.
- 45:37Speaker 3: I'll tell you the story. It's ESPN 792 on FM.
- 45:39Speaker 3: Don't stop.

- 46:07Speaker 3: minutes on the Sean O'Connell show. First up a PGA

- 46:32Speaker 3: OC sent you what's going on. James at the president's
- 46:34Speaker 3: cup play has not started yet.
- 46:39Speaker 1: So there's your update brought to you by you into
- 46:41Speaker 1: golf play coming later at the president's cup, whatever.
- 46:45Speaker 3: The letter board does not yet exist.
- 46:48Speaker 4: All right.
- 46:48Speaker 2: That's perfect because it gives.
- 46:49Speaker 3: Me time to tell you the harrowing tale of the
- 46:53Speaker 3: avenues bear yesterday. My neighbor, Mike shout out to Mike,
- 46:59Speaker 3: my neighbor, Mike text me a video and he says,
- 47:04Speaker 3: this is in the house, the backyard of the house
- 47:07Speaker 3: across the street from me.
- 47:08Speaker 2: Now Mike lives around the corner from me. So he lives.
- 47:11Speaker 3: Probably 600 yards away from my house.
- 47:15Speaker 2: The house across the street from him is actually closer
- 47:18Speaker 2: to my house.
- 47:18Speaker 3: So that would be probably like, I don't know, 500
- 47:23Speaker 3: yards away from my house.
- 47:24Speaker 4: All right.
- 47:27Speaker 3: And I play the video and And it's this little
- 47:30Speaker 3: dark shape of a critter, you know, smallish. Like, oh,
- 47:35Speaker 3: what is that thing? Is that a giant raccoon? Nay,
- 47:39Speaker 3: not a giant raccoon. That's a bear.
- 47:43Speaker 2: That is a baby black bear in the avenues in
- 47:46Speaker 2: the neighborhood. And I was like, whoa. I've lived in
- 47:50Speaker 2: Utah pretty much my whole life.
- 47:52Speaker 3: I've only seen one bear in the wild, one wild bear,
- 47:56Speaker 3: one bear outside of captivity. I've only seen it one time.
- 48:01Speaker 3: And now there's one in the neighborhood. And I text
- 48:03Speaker 3: Mike back and I said, wow, did they already get it?
- 48:05Speaker 3: Did animal control already get it?
- 48:06Speaker 2: And he said, yeah.
- 48:07Speaker 3: I was like, oh, man, I wonder what happened. I
- 48:10Speaker 3: wonder where the mama bear is. Because obviously that's what
- 48:12Speaker 3: you worry about when you see a bear cub. Where's
- 48:14Speaker 3: mama bear? Well, a little bit of research will tell
- 48:18Speaker 3: you that you don't want to know what happened to
- 48:20Speaker 3: Mama Bear if a baby bear is wandering in a
- 48:22Speaker 3: neighborhood by itself. However, I shed a little tear for
- 48:28Speaker 3: the bear, not literally, and was just like, all right,
- 48:30Speaker 3: I'll move on with my day. Then, about 11 p.m.,
- 48:34Speaker 3: I'm getting ready to go to bed. I'm trimming my
- 48:37Speaker 3: unruly facial hair, and I walk, and I look out
- 48:42Speaker 3: the back window, and I notice that down the hill.
- 48:46Speaker 3: From my house, there is a tree that is just
- 48:50Speaker 3: lit up with spotlights, just shining like it's Christmas, but
- 48:56Speaker 3: lit up. And then, you know, there's those high-powered flashlights
- 48:59Speaker 3: that almost create like a solid beam of light.
- 49:01Speaker 2: Those are wanding into the branches, just like lightsaber style.
- 49:07Speaker 2: And I'm just like, you know what they're looking for?
- 49:10Speaker 2: They're looking for a bear in that tree.
- 49:13Speaker 3: And I understand fully that you should allow authorities and
- 49:19Speaker 3: professionals to handle things on their own, that you should
- 49:23Speaker 3: not be a looky Lou who needs to get down
- 49:25Speaker 3: there and see what's going on. However, inside, I am
- 49:30Speaker 3: a five-year-old who cannot battle down the curiosity of, Hey,
- 49:34Speaker 3: is there a bear in that tree? So I, I
- 49:37Speaker 3: head down the hill and I go to see if
- 49:39Speaker 3: there's a bear in that tree.
- 49:40Speaker 2: And guess what? James Peterson, there's a bear in the tree.
- 49:46Speaker 4: Whoa.
- 49:48Speaker 3: In fact, they think it is the same bear cub
- 49:50Speaker 3: because they did not. In fact, already arrest the bear
- 49:54Speaker 3: as my neighbor incorrectly had been told.
- 49:59Speaker 1: So what did the bear do to get arrested?
- 50:02Speaker 3: That's trespassing on public lands.
- 50:06Speaker 1: We take that seriously with the animal trespassing very seriously
- 50:10Speaker 1: in the avenues.
- 50:11Speaker 3: Welcome around here, baby bear. So bear in the tree.
- 50:18Speaker 3: Shout out to Salt Lake City Fire Department.
- 50:22Speaker 4: All right.
- 50:22Speaker 3: Shout out to the police department and the. DNR folks,
- 50:28Speaker 3: there was like a whole crew down there. And then
- 50:31Speaker 3: there was a couple of neighbors and I wandered in
- 50:34Speaker 3: amongst them.
- 50:35Speaker 2: And was just like, Hey, what's going on guys?
- 50:37Speaker 3: And they had already fired a dart into the, the
- 50:40Speaker 3: rump of the baby bear.
- 50:41Speaker 2: He was already asleep. He was slumped over the branches,
- 50:45Speaker 2: totally out cold. So the fireman got the ladder truck
- 50:48Speaker 2: out and they took the ladder up into the tree.
- 50:50Speaker 2: And instead of pulling a lost cat out of the tree,
- 50:53Speaker 2: they pulled a baby bear out of.
- 50:55Speaker 3: The tree and he was asleep. This was my favorite
- 50:57Speaker 3: part of the whole experience. The department of natural resources,
- 51:01Speaker 3: the bear expert is down at the bottom looking up
- 51:04Speaker 3: with the rest of us.
- 51:05Speaker 2: And she goes, make.
- 51:07Speaker 3: Sure it's asleep before you try to grab it. And
- 51:12Speaker 3: the fireman was just like, how should I make sure
- 51:15Speaker 3: it's asleep? She said, tickle his ear. So the sleeping
- 51:19Speaker 3: bears in the tree and the fireman reaches out from
- 51:22Speaker 3: the ladder and just gives them a little scratch behind
- 51:25Speaker 3: the ear.
- 51:26Speaker 2: And then they brought him down.
- 51:27Speaker 1: That's how my wife makes sure I'm asleep. She just
- 51:30Speaker 1: tickles my ear.
- 51:32Speaker 3: It's like when you're checking on your baby when you
- 51:34Speaker 3: first have a newborn.
- 51:36Speaker 2: That's how we check if the boy's asleep, too, now
- 51:38Speaker 2: that I think of it. So he might be a bear,
- 51:41Speaker 2: and you weren't aware. It was awesome.
- 51:44Speaker 3: All the professionals did an incredible job. All of us
- 51:47Speaker 3: obnoxious looky-loos did not get in their way. They were
- 51:50Speaker 3: really gracious and really kind. And we're like, yeah, you
- 51:53Speaker 3: could take pictures of it. Please don't post and sensationalize
- 51:57Speaker 3: this on social media.
- 51:58Speaker 2: So I did not.
- 52:00Speaker 3: I didn't want to cause a bear panic in the avenues.
- 52:03Speaker 3: And they were like holding it and checking its breathing
- 52:06Speaker 3: and stuff.
- 52:07Speaker 2: I was like, can I touch it?
- 52:08Speaker 3: And the guy, the supervisor for the DNR people was like, yeah, sure.
- 52:13Speaker 2: So I got this pet a baby bear while he
- 52:14Speaker 2: was sleeping. Did a lot of other people touch the bear?
- 52:17Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 52:17Speaker 2: That's amazing. And the cops... Well, I'll let them tell
- 52:20Speaker 2: their own story.
- 52:21Speaker 3: Let's just say that everyone got really great photos of
- 52:24Speaker 3: the baby bear who was sleeping peacefully. And I hope
- 52:27Speaker 3: he's doing all right today. He or she is doing
- 52:29Speaker 3: all right today because it was an exciting time in
- 52:32Speaker 3: the avenues last night, a wild bear on the loose
- 52:35Speaker 3: in the neighborhood.
- 52:38Speaker 1: And someone got to tickle his ear and I got, yeah,
- 52:42Speaker 1: the first, you got to pet him.
- 52:44Speaker 2: Someone else got to tickle.
- 52:45Speaker 3: The fireman, got to tickle his ear. And then, uh,
- 52:49Speaker 3: I got to scratch his little nape of his neck.
- 52:51Speaker 3: Just hello, little bear.
- 52:52Speaker 1: Do the Salt Lake City Fire Department, do they take
- 52:55Speaker 1: advantage of this and do a social media campaign? They're like,
- 52:58Speaker 1: we don't just rescue cats from trees.
- 53:00Speaker 2: They should. You got a cat in a tree? How
- 53:03Speaker 2: about a bear in a tree?
- 53:06Speaker 1: So way less unlikely occurrence, but it still made me go, seriously?
- 53:15Speaker 1: We can find that here in someone's yard. So over
- 53:18Speaker 1: at Muir Park area in Bountiful, there's the Muir Park Trail.
- 53:23Speaker 1: Those really big houses in that area, very wealthy neighborhood.
- 53:27Speaker 1: I'm driving around there a few weeks ago, trying to
- 53:34Speaker 1: get the boy to fall asleep in the back of
- 53:35Speaker 1: the car. So we're just going on a long drive.
- 53:38Speaker 1: And saw a family of deer in someone's front yard.
- 53:42Speaker 1: out there now, Mueller park area, you gotta, it's, you know,
- 53:46Speaker 1: right into, if anyone knows it, the forest is basically
- 53:50Speaker 1: right there. So it makes a lot of sense, but
- 53:52Speaker 1: still it's like, so what's got deer in their front yard.
- 53:55Speaker 2: That's crazy.
- 53:57Speaker 1: Bear in the avenues, a lot less likely or a
- 54:00Speaker 1: lot less likely to see something like that, but it's,
- 54:02Speaker 1: it's crazy to see things out of place like that
- 54:06Speaker 1: in the suburbs. Um, that's a cool story you got
- 54:10Speaker 1: about the bear.
- 54:10Speaker 2: I didn't get to touch the deer. You got to
- 54:13Speaker 2: touch the bear. So you want to up to me?
- 54:15Speaker 3: Well, I wouldn't have been able to, if he'd stayed
- 54:18Speaker 3: awake and I'm sure that you're staying awake.
- 54:20Speaker 4: Yeah. All right.
- 54:21Speaker 3: We got to take a break here. We'll ask Eric
- 54:24Speaker 3: Weddle if he's ever pet a bear. That might be
- 54:26Speaker 3: the only thing I have on, on the super bowl champion,
- 54:28Speaker 3: the Utah football legend, Sean O'Connell show on ESPN, 792
- 54:32Speaker 3: on FM.
- 54:42Speaker 8: You're listening to the Sean O'Connell Show, your source for
- 54:45Speaker 8: the best youth football coverage.
- 54:47Speaker 6: Here's OC from the Murdoch Hyundai Studio of ESPN 700
- 54:52Speaker 6: at 92.1 FM.
- 54:57Speaker 2: Welcome back to the Sean O'Connell Show. Welcome in the
- 55:00Speaker 2: Utah football legend.
- 55:01Speaker 3: The Super Bowl champion, the head coach of the Rancho
- 55:04Speaker 3: Bernardo Broncos, Eric Weddle.
- 55:07Speaker 2: Kind enough to join us. EW, back in the USA.
- 55:11Speaker 4: I'm back.
- 55:13Speaker 2: How did Italy go?
- 55:15Speaker 4: It was good. Makes you appreciate the land of the
- 55:19Speaker 4: free and the home of the brave. We missed America.
- 55:23Speaker 4: Italy's cool, but I'm glad to be back. Glad to
- 55:28Speaker 4: be back with the team. It was great to be
- 55:32Speaker 4: there for Silver and her teammates. And they didn't do
- 55:37Speaker 4: as well as they could have done. unfortunately, and didn't
- 55:41Speaker 4: make the finals on Sunday, but it was a good
- 55:43Speaker 4: experience and one that they'll remember for a lifetime. But
- 55:49Speaker 4: it's back to work.
- 55:51Speaker 2: And your team won without you, right?
- 55:54Speaker 4: They won without me. It goes to show you, you
- 55:59Speaker 4: set a good culture and standard, and you coach your
- 56:02Speaker 4: coaches up, and then you just let it go. I mean,
- 56:05Speaker 4: I came back, you know, I met with it. You
- 56:07Speaker 4: get a kick out of this, sir.
- 56:08Speaker 10: Met with the leaders.
- 56:09Speaker 4: I was like, hey, I just want to check in.
- 56:11Speaker 4: We've got a bye this week, which is much needed.
- 56:13Speaker 4: I was like, hey, I just want to check in.
- 56:16Speaker 4: How did everything go last week? The flow, what you
- 56:19Speaker 4: guys liked, didn't like, et cetera. And one of the
- 56:22Speaker 4: guys goes, hey, coach, don't take this the wrong way, but,
- 56:26Speaker 4: you know, we actually, it was much more loose and
- 56:28Speaker 4: we kind of had a lot more fun without you around.
- 56:32Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 56:33Speaker 4: I was like, Hey man, it's good. It's good to know.
- 56:35Speaker 4: It means I need to lighten up a little bit
- 56:36Speaker 4: and not be such a heartache all the time.
- 56:39Speaker 2: Oh, so you're more, you're more Kyle Whittingham than Morgan Scali.
- 56:42Speaker 4: It sounds like, well, you know, I just, you know,
- 56:48Speaker 4: I am who I am. So when, when things aren't
- 56:51Speaker 4: going awry, I'm going to tell you. And I expect,
- 56:55Speaker 4: I expect things to go a certain way. I could
- 56:58Speaker 4: have fun too now, but having fun is kicking people's
- 57:01Speaker 4: faces in the ground, not having false start penalties and discipline,
- 57:07Speaker 4: you know, those types of issues. So, you know, we
- 57:10Speaker 4: all have things to work on. I'm not perfect.
- 57:12Speaker 2: Speaker 0 7, 0 All right.
- 57:15Speaker 3: 33 to zero drubbing of the Aggies for this Utah
- 57:18Speaker 3: football team last weekend. Again, it was a home game,
- 57:22Speaker 3: Rice-Echo Stadium packed out, beautiful sunny day in Salt Lake City,
- 57:27Speaker 3: and a really clean first half for the offense and
- 57:30Speaker 3: the defense. Both things got a little bit funky in
- 57:32Speaker 3: the second half, but we can get to that. What
- 57:35Speaker 3: were your thoughts on the game, especially that first half?
- 57:39Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, I was getting kicked off about 9.45
- 57:41Speaker 4: my time, 9.30, 9.45. So I stayed up and watched it.
- 57:43Speaker 4: Lucky enough, I was able to stream it, so... It was,
- 57:51Speaker 4: I mean, just the efficiency, even though we at times
- 57:56Speaker 4: had some third and longs, I believe, we were able
- 57:59Speaker 4: to keep the drives going. And, man, I was just
- 58:03Speaker 4: really impressed on some of the throws Dev made, especially
- 58:08Speaker 4: on the sideline. The one over the defender was probably
- 58:11Speaker 4: like a, gosh, a 20-yard completion on the far sideline,
- 58:17Speaker 4: opposite hash. And I'm just like, man, that is an
- 58:22Speaker 4: incredible throw. And so I felt just I like the competitiveness.
- 58:29Speaker 4: I like the energy. You know, Utah State did some things.
- 58:34Speaker 4: They're a good, well-coached team. Like, you know, who did
- 58:38Speaker 4: they play a couple weeks before? Washington, at Washington. And they,
- 58:42Speaker 4: you know, we made them look way worse. So people
- 58:46Speaker 4: keep talking about, who we've played and this, that, and
- 58:49Speaker 4: the other. We just smoked Arkansas, and Georgia just plays
- 58:53Speaker 4: them and plays them the same. So does Georgia get
- 58:56Speaker 4: looked at the same as us, or is it because
- 58:59Speaker 4: Georgia has the name and the championships that they get
- 59:02Speaker 4: the pass? So I think every week that passes, every
- 59:06Speaker 4: week that we play well, obviously there's room for improvement.
- 59:10Speaker 4: but we continue to show like people are realizing that
- 59:14Speaker 4: like i said before the season i think this could
- 59:16Speaker 4: be a special year we got to go do it
- 59:19Speaker 4: but there's no reason why we can't continue to climb
- 59:22Speaker 4: and show.
- 59:23Speaker 3: What we're about Put yourself back on this Utah football
- 59:27Speaker 3: team and know that you've played three home games on
- 59:30Speaker 3: the bounce, right?
- 59:31Speaker 2: Back to back to back at home.
- 59:33Speaker 3: And now you're going to start Big 12 play, and
- 59:35Speaker 3: it's your first road game of the year. And there
- 59:37Speaker 3: are new starters on this team. There are guys who
- 59:40Speaker 3: are important players on this team who haven't done this
- 59:43Speaker 3: exact thing.
- 59:43Speaker 2: They haven't done a lot of this, at least.
- 59:46Speaker 3: What do you do to make sure guys are the
- 59:48Speaker 3: same and perform the same on the road game from
- 59:50Speaker 3: a leadership perspective as they did at home?
- 59:55Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 59:55Speaker 4: I mean, keep the main thing, the main thing you
- 1:00:00Speaker 4: try to keep the same routine. Like even though the
- 1:00:02Speaker 4: home game you're at home, you're still doing the same
- 1:00:05Speaker 4: routine as if you're on the road, right? Like you'll
- 1:00:09Speaker 4: still have the same night meetings. You still have the
- 1:00:11Speaker 4: same team movie. If they do that, you'll still have
- 1:00:14Speaker 4: team dinner. You'll wake up, you'll have your walkthroughs and,
- 1:00:18Speaker 4: and businesses will be the same. Yeah. You're not in your,
- 1:00:21Speaker 4: you're the normal hotel room, but you're still in a
- 1:00:22Speaker 4: hotel room. Uh, And so I think, I think it
- 1:00:26Speaker 4: comes out, comes more as, as the leadership and, uh,
- 1:00:31Speaker 4: you know, those guys have been in big games on
- 1:00:33Speaker 4: the road, uh, just reminding them like, Hey, we're here
- 1:00:37Speaker 4: to get a job done. Let's do what we do. Right.
- 1:00:41Speaker 4: I think it's supposed to be like raining and this
- 1:00:43Speaker 4: and that, and everyone's trying to hype up. I would
- 1:00:46Speaker 4: say has a chance. Like they don't have a chance.
- 1:00:49Speaker 4: Let's go out and, and treat them as such, uh,
- 1:00:53Speaker 4: and play our style of football. Let's continue to play.
- 1:00:56Speaker 4: I know we had the second half of Utah State
- 1:00:58Speaker 4: was kind of ugly in some areas. Let's just try
- 1:01:03Speaker 4: to clean that up and continue to try to strive
- 1:01:05Speaker 4: for four quarters of football.
- 1:01:09Speaker 3: Wet games, muddy games, gross games are good for slow
- 1:01:13Speaker 3: guys like me, for real athletes like you. Did you
- 1:01:17Speaker 3: enjoy a wet game or a muddy game?
- 1:01:20Speaker 6: I don't know.
- 1:01:23Speaker 4: Uh, defensively. Yeah. Cause, uh, well, it just depends. Like
- 1:01:28Speaker 4: if you're, if you're on grass or turf, I don't know,
- 1:01:30Speaker 4: Iowa state, if it's turf or grass, it's grass. Yeah.
- 1:01:34Speaker 4: So that, that could honestly, that, that could affect a lot. Uh,
- 1:01:38Speaker 4: now that you say that just for the receivers getting
- 1:01:42Speaker 4: in and out of the breaks, uh, the advantages, you know,
- 1:01:46Speaker 4: where the ball is coming and the time is coming.
- 1:01:49Speaker 4: So being able to, to, uh, finagle and shift how
- 1:01:54Speaker 4: you run your route to make sure that you're getting
- 1:01:56Speaker 4: in and out of breaks, you're not slipping where the
- 1:01:57Speaker 4: defense are reacting, so it's much more difficult. Understanding what
- 1:02:01Speaker 4: type of cleats and spikes, if I need longer cleats
- 1:02:04Speaker 4: or studs, making sure that we have that available. But
- 1:02:09Speaker 4: it just becomes much more of a dirty run-the-ball type game.
- 1:02:16Speaker 4: And that's who we are, so we should be confident
- 1:02:20Speaker 4: going in I think we're confident anyways. I think it
- 1:02:23Speaker 4: stems from our head coach and how we respect our opponent,
- 1:02:27Speaker 4: but also we understand that we fear nobody, and we
- 1:02:33Speaker 4: are the ones that put the gas pedal down and
- 1:02:37Speaker 4: don't change who we are. But it can affect. How
- 1:02:43Speaker 4: are you going to handle the rain? Do you still
- 1:02:46Speaker 4: wear gloves? Do you not? Defensively, like, opportunities come, and
- 1:02:50Speaker 4: then it slips through your hands. So you definitely got
- 1:02:53Speaker 4: to handle it, and we'll see how they do. It's
- 1:02:57Speaker 4: the unknown.
- 1:02:59Speaker 3: As a coach, how do you handle, like, what is
- 1:03:02Speaker 3: the conversation like with, with distributing touches and making sure
- 1:03:06Speaker 3: you're getting the ball in the hands of the guys,
- 1:03:08Speaker 3: your playmakers, this is a good problem for Utah to have,
- 1:03:13Speaker 3: but it is something that needs to be figured out
- 1:03:15Speaker 3: in big 12 play where, you know, like last week
- 1:03:19Speaker 3: in a, in a really nice offensive performance way, Sean
- 1:03:22Speaker 3: only had like 13 touches instead of, I think the
- 1:03:25Speaker 3: 20 or so that we're going to want to see
- 1:03:27Speaker 3: him get.
- 1:03:28Speaker 2: And that's fine.
- 1:03:29Speaker 3: Cause you know, didn't play fourth quarter, that sort of thing.
- 1:03:32Speaker 3: But you know, a week before that it was Braden
- 1:03:35Speaker 3: Pagan didn't really get involved in the offensive game plan.
- 1:03:37Speaker 3: And there are some guys that it feels like, you
- 1:03:40Speaker 3: probably want to get them the ball every single game
- 1:03:44Speaker 3: on a relatively consistent basis. As long as the team
- 1:03:46Speaker 3: is winning, that's the most important thing. But to maximize
- 1:03:49Speaker 3: your entire season, do you have to get certain guys
- 1:03:53Speaker 3: the ball multiple times a game?
- 1:03:54Speaker 2: How do you manage that as a coach?
- 1:03:58Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, that's a very, very good point and question. Like,
- 1:04:04Speaker 4: for me, in my opinion... I try to stress that
- 1:04:07Speaker 4: the ball finds out, finds the ball goes where the defense,
- 1:04:11Speaker 4: defense dictates where the ball goes, especially in the passing game.
- 1:04:14Speaker 4: So it then incentivizes always running my routes hard and
- 1:04:19Speaker 4: knowing like, Hey, yeah, I know I'm primary in this concept,
- 1:04:21Speaker 4: but depending on the defense and the structure and how
- 1:04:24Speaker 4: they cover it, like I could end up not getting
- 1:04:26Speaker 4: the ball. So I got to make sure I run
- 1:04:28Speaker 4: my route hard, no matter what, because whether I'm one, two, three,
- 1:04:31Speaker 4: or even the check down, like I could be getting
- 1:04:34Speaker 4: the ball in this place. So, I try to emphasize that,
- 1:04:38Speaker 4: but you do have your studs, and you always, like,
- 1:04:42Speaker 4: when I script, I try to make sure, like, I
- 1:04:46Speaker 4: get those guys that you identify get a touch or
- 1:04:51Speaker 4: two within the first 10, just to get them going,
- 1:04:54Speaker 4: get them in a rhythm. How are they going to
- 1:04:56Speaker 4: defend Pagan, right? Like, how are they going to load
- 1:04:59Speaker 4: the box up on way, Sean? Like, those are the
- 1:05:01Speaker 4: things you're trying to identify, how they handle emotions and
- 1:05:04Speaker 4: shifts and stuff. and reloads and all the, all those
- 1:05:06Speaker 4: types of things. But for me, I think it's a,
- 1:05:09Speaker 4: it's a positive when way Sean doesn't have to, to
- 1:05:12Speaker 4: get 20, 25 touches in a game, knowing that this
- 1:05:15Speaker 4: season is going to be a long season. We know
- 1:05:17Speaker 4: like we're going to rely on him and know that
- 1:05:20Speaker 4: we need a strong running game to win a championship.
- 1:05:23Speaker 4: So I almost look at it as a positive that
- 1:05:25Speaker 4: we didn't have to use them a bunch, but also
- 1:05:27Speaker 4: know like guys want the ball there. It's not like
- 1:05:30Speaker 4: so much of a selfish desire. It's just, offensive guys
- 1:05:34Speaker 4: want the ball. They want to make an impact. So
- 1:05:35Speaker 4: you gotta, you gotta make sure you tote that line
- 1:05:40Speaker 4: of keeping them engaged and encouraging them. And it seems
- 1:05:43Speaker 4: like there is no drama per se of a me type.
- 1:05:46Speaker 4: Like I'm not getting the ball. Like you see, you
- 1:05:49Speaker 4: see those runs happening in birds, like running down 50 yards,
- 1:05:52Speaker 4: trying to get a block and pagan block on the perimeter.
- 1:05:54Speaker 4: And like, you're seeing just so much great team football that,
- 1:05:58Speaker 4: I think that is who we are, and it's not
- 1:06:01Speaker 4: about how many touches. So at the moment, I don't
- 1:06:03Speaker 4: feel like it's an issue. But as a coach, you
- 1:06:06Speaker 4: want to make sure those guys are making a difference,
- 1:06:09Speaker 4: and you keep them in the game. You want to
- 1:06:10Speaker 4: keep those guys mentally in the game. You don't want
- 1:06:13Speaker 4: to go a quarter or two without touching the ball
- 1:06:15Speaker 4: if you're one of our studs. It just doesn't make sense.
- 1:06:18Speaker 3: Some of this is dictated when you're still in an
- 1:06:21Speaker 3: early season by who you have played. So I don't
- 1:06:25Speaker 3: want to read too much into it, but Iowa State,
- 1:06:28Speaker 3: is right now the least productive passing offense in the
- 1:06:31Speaker 3: Big 12 Conference. They've only thrown 54 passes in three games.
- 1:06:37Speaker 3: You're a defensive back playing against this team and knowing
- 1:06:40Speaker 3: that that has been the trend so far.
- 1:06:42Speaker 2: How do you prepare for this game?
- 1:06:45Speaker 4: Well, you probably understand that I'm going to be on
- 1:06:48Speaker 4: an island the majority of the game, so I've got
- 1:06:50Speaker 4: to be locked in every single play. The fear I
- 1:06:54Speaker 4: always had as a defense and a defensive coordinator was,
- 1:06:57Speaker 4: I don't really like selling out when I know a
- 1:06:59Speaker 4: team's going to run maybe 70% of the game. I
- 1:07:02Speaker 4: like to be sound. I like to be structured and
- 1:07:06Speaker 4: play good football. When you start bringing those safeties down
- 1:07:10Speaker 4: and now you're going zero or you're bringing the post
- 1:07:13Speaker 4: player down to get that extra defender because you're struggling
- 1:07:15Speaker 4: with the run, it just opens up for BS plays
- 1:07:19Speaker 4: on the perimeter that they have no business doing if
- 1:07:22Speaker 4: we just play normal defense. So That's what I would–
- 1:07:26Speaker 4: I'm always a little nervous when we sell out to
- 1:07:28Speaker 4: stop the run because it is a heavy run team
- 1:07:30Speaker 4: that you're leaving those corners out to drive. They can
- 1:07:33Speaker 4: just get lucky, right, like a lucky tip, and the
- 1:07:35Speaker 4: guy makes a catch for a 40-yard gain just because
- 1:07:38Speaker 4: he's playing press man all game. That's not– you don't
- 1:07:42Speaker 4: want to give easy things up. You want to make
- 1:07:44Speaker 4: them work for it philosophically-wise. But I would just make
- 1:07:50Speaker 4: sure our corners are locked in and understand I may
- 1:07:52Speaker 4: not get help much this game, I've got to be
- 1:07:54Speaker 4: on point every single snap, and that one play could
- 1:07:57Speaker 4: be the difference. It's that way anyways for corners, but
- 1:08:01Speaker 4: through scheme and different coverages, you do have some leniency
- 1:08:05Speaker 4: on I'm just over the top, I'm bailing out, I'm
- 1:08:08Speaker 4: playing the flat. But in this type of game, you
- 1:08:11Speaker 4: have to take that mindset. I'm not letting one catch
- 1:08:15Speaker 4: get on me.
- 1:08:17Speaker 3: Eric Weller is our guest here on the Sean O'Connell
- 1:08:19Speaker 3: Show talking all things football. We started with the Utes.
- 1:08:21Speaker 3: I want to transition here a little bit. to the
- 1:08:24Speaker 3: National Football League. This one, I know there's not a
- 1:08:28Speaker 3: lot of love here in the Salt Lake City market
- 1:08:31Speaker 3: for Caleb Williams because of his time at USC and
- 1:08:33Speaker 3: his antics and things like that. you have to tell
- 1:08:36Speaker 3: me how guys in the NFL are processing and talking
- 1:08:39Speaker 3: about him weeping his way off the field on a
- 1:08:42Speaker 3: cart for a hamstring strain. I mean, it's been turned
- 1:08:46Speaker 3: into a meme online plenty, but inside of NFL conversations
- 1:08:51Speaker 3: in locker rooms and group chats with guys from the league,
- 1:08:54Speaker 3: how is something like this handled?
- 1:08:58Speaker 4: I mean, honestly, it's just embarrassing. I was shocked when
- 1:09:10Speaker 4: I heard it was a grade one hamstring strain. I'm
- 1:09:15Speaker 4: not the toughest guy in the world, but I played...
- 1:09:18Speaker 4: a lot of my career with a grade one hammy,
- 1:09:20Speaker 4: like everybody's hammies hurt. I've torn a hamstring before and it,
- 1:09:26Speaker 4: it wasn't, it wasn't like, I've, we just never seen
- 1:09:30Speaker 4: something like this. I mean, it's from, for a lot
- 1:09:33Speaker 4: of guys and just everybody is, is just taken back.
- 1:09:37Speaker 4: Like you've made that much of a scene over a
- 1:09:41Speaker 4: hamstring and it's not even a like torn off the bone,
- 1:09:46Speaker 4: I could see like being in that much pain, but
- 1:09:49Speaker 4: it was a, it was a mild strain. Like you
- 1:09:51Speaker 4: could have kept playing. I'm shocked. I mean, I've just,
- 1:09:55Speaker 4: I don't know how he comes back from this, honestly, as,
- 1:10:00Speaker 4: as the perception, like he is a stud and he's
- 1:10:05Speaker 4: a really good quarterback. I'm not going to say he's
- 1:10:07Speaker 4: a great quarterback. I think he does some crazy things
- 1:10:09Speaker 4: and he gets away with it, but How do you
- 1:10:12Speaker 4: come back from this? It's Paul Pierce 2.0. At least
- 1:10:18Speaker 4: Pierce came back out of a wheelchair with nothing wrong
- 1:10:21Speaker 4: with his knee. I mean, at that point, you go
- 1:10:24Speaker 4: back in the locker room. How do you not come
- 1:10:25Speaker 4: back in the game? That's the more telling thing. Like,
- 1:10:29Speaker 4: you got carted off. We all thought it was an Achilles,
- 1:10:32Speaker 4: even though we didn't see that movement. And then you
- 1:10:37Speaker 4: don't come back? I mean, goodness gracious, how soft is
- 1:10:43Speaker 4: this generation that these injuries... I mean, I don't want
- 1:10:48Speaker 4: to go off tangent on just the way things are nowadays,
- 1:10:51Speaker 4: but you got guys so quick to go to the
- 1:10:57Speaker 4: doctor and get a doctor's note to not have them
- 1:11:00Speaker 4: play than just tough it out and play. When did
- 1:11:04Speaker 4: it turn that I'm going to do whatever it takes
- 1:11:06Speaker 4: to play rather than I don't want to play. I
- 1:11:11Speaker 4: don't understand that mindset. But that's like a lot of
- 1:11:17Speaker 4: kids and athletes nowadays, and it carries over to the NFL.
- 1:11:22Speaker 3: I made the point on Monday when we found out
- 1:11:25Speaker 3: that it wasn't anything serious and he hadn't had that
- 1:11:27Speaker 3: reaction to it. I was like, he has now put
- 1:11:29Speaker 3: himself in a situation where where he almost can't get
- 1:11:33Speaker 3: back onto the field as quickly as he should because
- 1:11:37Speaker 3: he's got to pretend that the hamstring is a bigger
- 1:11:39Speaker 3: problem to justify getting carted off. He almost has to
- 1:11:45Speaker 3: be like, well, I'm fine, but I've got to make
- 1:11:47Speaker 3: it look like I wasn't overreacting, so I'll miss one
- 1:11:50Speaker 3: more game, and then I'll come back after that. I'm like, man,
- 1:11:53Speaker 3: you've really shot yourself in the foot there.
- 1:11:56Speaker 4: I mean, you have a valid point. You have a
- 1:11:59Speaker 4: valid point. I mean, people are saying he'll be back
- 1:12:02Speaker 4: this week. And that's just like, it's crazy.
- 1:12:07Speaker 3: That's probably the right thing to do, come back this
- 1:12:09Speaker 3: week and just face the music that you overreacted and
- 1:12:11Speaker 3: you get made fun of.
- 1:12:12Speaker 4: Seriously, I mean, hey, man, I thought my leg was dead. Seriously,
- 1:12:18Speaker 4: I didn't know. When I looked down, I didn't think
- 1:12:20Speaker 4: my leg was attached to my hip. So I was like,
- 1:12:23Speaker 4: I freaked out. I'm sorry. I freaked out.
- 1:12:27Speaker 3: Uh, did you ever get fined for like a celebration
- 1:12:32Speaker 3: or an obscene gesture or anything like that.
- 1:12:35Speaker 2: In the NFL?
- 1:12:37Speaker 4: No, definitely not.
- 1:12:39Speaker 2: You saw what happened to your boy juice, right?
- 1:12:43Speaker 4: It's getting out of control. Uh, like I'm all for like, man.
- 1:12:51Speaker 4: And then at the pit, like I try to teach
- 1:12:53Speaker 4: my guys, like, You celebrate with your teammates. It's respecting
- 1:13:00Speaker 4: your opponent, but I don't mind celebrating and having fun
- 1:13:03Speaker 4: with your teammates. Just don't direct it at your opponent.
- 1:13:07Speaker 4: I don't like to see that. I don't want to
- 1:13:08Speaker 4: see that. Because the game will humble you in an instant,
- 1:13:11Speaker 4: and you don't need to put that in the air.
- 1:13:13Speaker 4: And it's just not good football. But when you're doing
- 1:13:16Speaker 4: something like that, you're taking the fun, the little fun
- 1:13:21Speaker 4: that we have, you're taking it away over stupid stuff.
- 1:13:25Speaker 4: I get just, it's like the umpire given a ball
- 1:13:29Speaker 4: to that pitcher because his hat was crooked.
- 1:13:32Speaker 2: Yes.
- 1:13:34Speaker 4: And then like, now that the whole team's cracking in
- 1:13:37Speaker 4: their hat, like, what are we doing? What like, are
- 1:13:41Speaker 4: we really, you're really going to put your foot down? Like,
- 1:13:44Speaker 4: this is the mountain you're going to stand on because
- 1:13:45Speaker 4: of the hatch cricket. Like you're going to really make it.
- 1:13:48Speaker 4: So guys just don't have fun out there. Like, you
- 1:13:52Speaker 4: have to have fun playing football. That's when you play
- 1:13:54Speaker 4: your best. And that's the joy of, of football is
- 1:13:57Speaker 4: having fun. So I don't know. I think it's a joke. And,
- 1:14:01Speaker 4: and sometimes people get in these positions where they just
- 1:14:05Speaker 4: want to puff out their chest instead of just knowing
- 1:14:08Speaker 4: where they stand. Like the game's not about you ref,
- 1:14:10Speaker 4: like just let them do their thing. They're not affecting anybody.
- 1:14:14Speaker 3: For those who don't know what I'm talking about against
- 1:14:16Speaker 3: the dolphins, 49ers fullback, Kyle use chick. He, he, He
- 1:14:22Speaker 3: did his signature celebration that he's been doing for years
- 1:14:25Speaker 3: where he was chugging. Like he's not really chugging anything.
- 1:14:28Speaker 3: It looks like he's drinking something. He's drinking his juice
- 1:14:31Speaker 3: because they call him juice. And the NFL find him
- 1:14:34Speaker 3: 15 grand for engaging in offensive demonstration for imitating chugging
- 1:14:40Speaker 3: a beer, which is, he's like, no, it's.
- 1:14:43Speaker 4: Juice, man.
- 1:14:44Speaker 2: It's imaginary is what it is. NFL. Nobody knows what
- 1:14:47Speaker 2: it is. It's chocolate milk. My favorite drink.
- 1:14:50Speaker 4: And even, Even more, you're selling alcohol in the stadium.
- 1:14:53Speaker 4: They got billboards everywhere of alcohol and you're going to
- 1:14:58Speaker 4: find a guy for, you know, what he's doing and
- 1:15:01Speaker 4: you know, his nickname, like that should be rescinded out
- 1:15:03Speaker 4: the gate because it's a mistake. But it's like, it's
- 1:15:07Speaker 4: so hypocritical. Like the NFL, like they, they want to
- 1:15:09Speaker 4: say don't gamble, but every gambling resource business is, is
- 1:15:17Speaker 4: funding the NFL and funding these owners. So it's like, Like,
- 1:15:20Speaker 4: what are we doing? Like you got rules for the,
- 1:15:24Speaker 4: but not for me. Like it's typical, typical NFL garbage.
- 1:15:28Speaker 3: By the way, Kyle, you six response was, dude, I
- 1:15:31Speaker 3: don't even drink beer. So that's like, if you, I would,
- 1:15:36Speaker 3: I would feel very upset. I don't drink beer either.
- 1:15:39Speaker 3: If somebody find me for pretending to drink beer, I'd
- 1:15:41Speaker 3: be like, dude, I don't even in real life drink beer.
- 1:15:44Speaker 3: Even when I actually have a beverage in my hand,
- 1:15:46Speaker 3: it's not beer. That's a, it's gotta be annoying.
- 1:15:50Speaker 4: Yeah, it makes sense. The NFL does a lot of
- 1:15:55Speaker 4: dumb stuff, and they do a lot of things that
- 1:15:57Speaker 4: don't make sense.
- 1:15:59Speaker 3: All right, last thing before I let you go. The
- 1:16:02Speaker 3: Giants are now going to be without Jackson Dart for
- 1:16:05Speaker 3: an extended period of time. Young player, season-ending knee surgery,
- 1:16:11Speaker 3: bum deal for a guy that is obviously a huge
- 1:16:13Speaker 3: part of what a young team with a new coach
- 1:16:16Speaker 3: that you know well wants to do. If you're in
- 1:16:19Speaker 3: that locker room, how are you processing the loss of
- 1:16:21Speaker 3: your starting quarterback?
- 1:16:24Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, it's a bummer. Obviously, he looked outstanding
- 1:16:29Speaker 4: that first game. It's not just like an ascending quarterback
- 1:16:35Speaker 4: in this league, but you can tell the guys like him.
- 1:16:38Speaker 4: They play hard for him. I don't know if Abdul
- 1:16:40Speaker 4: Carter likes him, but what he does and what he
- 1:16:45Speaker 4: presents on the field and just how he's fun, he's
- 1:16:49Speaker 4: Runs the ball hard, and he's getting better at throwing
- 1:16:51Speaker 4: the ball. So it just is a huge hit, huge hit. Now, man,
- 1:16:57Speaker 4: Winston looks so bad. So if a week of practice,
- 1:17:00Speaker 4: is that the guy, or is it someone else out
- 1:17:03Speaker 4: there that they may want to bring back? But I
- 1:17:07Speaker 4: feel like the team is good enough with a competent
- 1:17:09Speaker 4: quarterback to be competitive, but you don't want to, like,
- 1:17:12Speaker 4: make this season out to be like a 4-13 season. Right.
- 1:17:18Speaker 4: if you don't have a quarterback, that's what it could
- 1:17:21Speaker 4: go to. Because if you don't have a quarterback, you
- 1:17:22Speaker 4: don't have a chance. But it's really unfortunate. And as
- 1:17:25Speaker 4: a player, you're just trying to pick it up and
- 1:17:26Speaker 4: try to keep the morale high, especially as a veteran.
- 1:17:30Speaker 4: And honestly, like, yeah, it could get bad, but you
- 1:17:35Speaker 4: still have to put on good tape and you still
- 1:17:38Speaker 4: have to, like, play well and do your job. Because
- 1:17:41Speaker 4: at the end of the year, like, you have a
- 1:17:43Speaker 4: tough year, like, you'll be on the chopping block, too,
- 1:17:45Speaker 4: just because you didn't play well. It doesn't matter what
- 1:17:48Speaker 4: the quarterback situation is.
- 1:17:51Speaker 2: What are you going to do during the bye week?
- 1:17:54Speaker 4: Gage and I are going up to Cal tomorrow for
- 1:17:57Speaker 4: Cal Clemson. And so that should be a good atmosphere,
- 1:18:03Speaker 4: see what that's all about. And then chilling, watching the
- 1:18:06Speaker 4: game Saturday. We get back early Saturday morning so I
- 1:18:09Speaker 4: can watch the game and... Prepping for next week. We've
- 1:18:13Speaker 4: got Del.
- 1:18:13Speaker 9: Norte at home.
- 1:18:14Speaker 4: It's a huge game there. 4-1, more 4-1. League opponent.
- 1:18:17Speaker 4: And got to get some guys off of injury. So
- 1:18:21Speaker 4: just get ahead on that with prep and enjoy the
- 1:18:25Speaker 4: weekend with the fam. Outside of that, I think all
- 1:18:28Speaker 4: the kids don't really have anything this weekend, so we'll
- 1:18:30Speaker 4: be able to just hang out and spend some time together.
- 1:18:32Speaker 3: The biggest part of me wants Gage to end up
- 1:18:34Speaker 3: as a Ute, but a very wicked little part of
- 1:18:37Speaker 3: me wants you to have to spend a lot of
- 1:18:39Speaker 3: time in Berkeley. around a bunch of hyper-liberal people, because
- 1:18:43Speaker 3: I know how much you would enjoy that.
- 1:18:47Speaker 4: Well, there's a reason I'm flying in right before the game,
- 1:18:52Speaker 4: going to the game, and then coming back. Me meandering
- 1:18:56Speaker 4: around Berkeley probably won't ever happen. And that's cool, man.
- 1:19:03Speaker 4: We all know our lanes and what we like to
- 1:19:08Speaker 4: be around. Me and some of that demographic not happening.
- 1:19:15Speaker 2: Love you, dude. Thanks for jumping on the show again.
- 1:19:17Speaker 2: Thank you.
- 1:19:18Speaker 4: You got it, bro.
- 1:19:20Speaker 3: Eric Weddle, the Utah football legend. Bye week for the
- 1:19:25Speaker 3: Broncos of Rancho Bernardo. Big thanks to him for jumping on.
- 1:19:31Speaker 3: The Daily Dump is next. Greg Popovich. Did Greg Popovich...
- 1:19:37Speaker 3: violate bro code in an unforgivable way. We have to
- 1:19:40Speaker 3: discuss during the Daily Dump. That's next on the Sean
- 1:19:43Speaker 3: O'Connell Show, ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 1:19:52Speaker 2: Feeling out of the loop?
- 1:19:53Speaker 6: Let's catch up on today's biggest headlines in the Daily
- 1:19:56Speaker 6: News Dump, where we flush out the biggest stories of
- 1:19:59Speaker 6: the day on the Sean O'Connell Show and Utah's number
- 1:20:02Speaker 6: one sports talk, ESPN 792.1 FM. Brought to you by
- 1:20:07Speaker 6: Valley Plumbing, Heating, and Cooling. Just look for the truck
- 1:20:10Speaker 6: with the duck.
- 1:20:18Speaker 2: All right, how important is bro code?
- 1:20:23Speaker 4: 877-353-0700.
- 1:20:23Speaker 3: If you'd like to weigh in on this story that's
- 1:20:26Speaker 3: coming in the Daily Dump, brought to you by Valley Plumbing, Heating,
- 1:20:29Speaker 3: and Cooling. I would make an argument that depending on
- 1:20:34Speaker 3: your profession, bro code may or may not be more
- 1:20:38Speaker 3: important in your life. Maybe like girl code, whatever you
- 1:20:42Speaker 3: call it on that side of things, may or may
- 1:20:45Speaker 3: not be more important in your life based on the
- 1:20:48Speaker 3: area in which you work as an adult. I think
- 1:20:52Speaker 3: when you get to a certain age, you worry less
- 1:20:54Speaker 3: about the cultural norms and convention.
- 1:20:58Speaker 2: And I think when you're a.
- 1:20:59Speaker 3: Highly accomplished person who has also had, to be indelicate,
- 1:21:03Speaker 3: a brush with death, you probably just don't care about
- 1:21:06Speaker 3: social convention or breaking unwritten rules or not.
- 1:21:11Speaker 2: But let's process this.
- 1:21:14Speaker 3: Greg Popovich, former San Antonio Spurs head coach, is remarried.
- 1:21:24Speaker 3: And it feels icky because this is a sourcing from TMZ,
- 1:21:27Speaker 3: but they got the marriage license. He married a woman
- 1:21:31Speaker 3: named Mary Barth Budenholzer, formerly known as Mrs. Mike Budenholzer. Oh,
- 1:21:40Speaker 3: I thought it might've been a different Budenholzer. It's a
- 1:21:42Speaker 3: very common name.
- 1:21:44Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 1:21:44Speaker 2: It's like Smith or Jensen here in the state of Utah. Look,
- 1:21:48Speaker 2: this is.
- 1:21:50Speaker 3: Apparently they were, they got married September 16th. So what's
- 1:21:53Speaker 3: that eight days ago in Texas and Mike, Mike Budenholzer
- 1:22:01Speaker 3: coached under Greg Popovich for 20, almost 20 years, 1996
- 1:22:07Speaker 3: to 2013. This is not like Derek Fisher was with
- 1:22:12Speaker 3: the Utah jazz for five minutes. These guys, these guys
- 1:22:16Speaker 3: worked together for a long time.
- 1:22:19Speaker 1: He was the the lead protege of Greg Popovich for
- 1:22:26Speaker 1: a very long time. It's no surprise he turned out
- 1:22:29Speaker 1: to be a great NBA head coach himself because he
- 1:22:33Speaker 1: was literally at the feet of Greg Popovich for so long.
- 1:22:37Speaker 2: Yeah, absolutely.
- 1:22:39Speaker 3: So Mike Budenholzer and his wife, Mary Budenholzer, got divorced
- 1:22:44Speaker 3: 10 years ago.
- 1:22:45Speaker 2: So it's, you know, water well under the bridge. It's
- 1:22:48Speaker 2: a long time ago.
- 1:22:48Speaker 3: Uh, Popovich has been a widower since 2018. So like, look,
- 1:22:54Speaker 3: everyone's entitled to happiness. Is this a violation of bro
- 1:22:59Speaker 3: code given the timeline and given like, I, this is
- 1:23:02Speaker 3: really funny. Cause my, my wife and I had a
- 1:23:04Speaker 3: conversation about this literally last weekend because somebody texted me.
- 1:23:09Speaker 3: One of my friends texted me and was just like, Hey,
- 1:23:13Speaker 3: I have an opportunity to go out with somebody I
- 1:23:17Speaker 3: didn't know. I have an opportunity to go out with
- 1:23:19Speaker 3: my friend, this person. We're not mutual friends. I have
- 1:23:24Speaker 3: an opportunity to go out with my friend's ex-wife.
- 1:23:27Speaker 2: Should I do that? And I was like, no. If
- 1:23:30Speaker 2: you're friends with them while they're married, you can't. That's
- 1:23:32Speaker 2: a no. You cannot.
- 1:23:35Speaker 1: That's a no matter how long it's been after they've
- 1:23:38Speaker 1: been divorced?
- 1:23:39Speaker 3: Well, and then I had a conversation with my wife,
- 1:23:41Speaker 3: and she's like, why not?
- 1:23:43Speaker 2: She's like, think about it. If it's like.
- 1:23:48Speaker 3: The spouse of your friend is probably like you and
- 1:23:51Speaker 3: your friend have things in common and like the same
- 1:23:53Speaker 3: kind of things. So you probably like the same kind
- 1:23:56Speaker 3: of women. So there's not just unlimited great bachelorettes out there.
- 1:24:01Speaker 2: Why not? And I was like, I would think that.
- 1:24:04Speaker 3: The feminine perspective on this would be like, no, absolutely not.
- 1:24:08Speaker 3: But she was like, why not? If they're not married still,
- 1:24:12Speaker 3: if it's like, you know, everything's cool.
- 1:24:14Speaker 4: Why not?
- 1:24:15Speaker 3: And I was like, okay, maybe I should think more
- 1:24:16Speaker 3: about this. So I I'm keeping an open mind here
- 1:24:19Speaker 3: for Greg Popovich. And I do think that Popovich is
- 1:24:24Speaker 3: in the phase of life like that.
- 1:24:26Speaker 2: I don't, I think he's always been in.
- 1:24:28Speaker 3: This phase of life to a certain extent, but especially
- 1:24:30Speaker 3: now given his health challenges, his.
- 1:24:33Speaker 2: Age, he's not coaching.
- 1:24:35Speaker 1: He's, he's in a front office role where he's not
- 1:24:38Speaker 1: doing a lot of day to day anymore.
- 1:24:39Speaker 3: And I imagine at some point he probably was just like,
- 1:24:44Speaker 3: he either said, Mike, how do you feel about this?
- 1:24:48Speaker 3: And got Budenholzer's blessing. Or he just said, Mike, how
- 1:24:50Speaker 3: do you feel about this? And maybe he was just like,
- 1:24:53Speaker 3: are you crazy, Pop? Don't do that. And Pop was like, dude,
- 1:24:56Speaker 3: I'm like 80 years old and I don't care what
- 1:24:59Speaker 3: anyone thinks anymore.
- 1:25:00Speaker 2: So it's just a wild story.
- 1:25:03Speaker 3: Mike Budenholzer's ex-wife, who of course knew Greg Popovich during
- 1:25:08Speaker 3: the entirety of her marriage experience, to Mike Budenholzer is
- 1:25:11Speaker 3: now married to Greg Popovich, but it is 10 years
- 1:25:15Speaker 3: removed from when she was married to Mike Budenholzer.
- 1:25:18Speaker 2: So 10 years is a lifetime, dude. I don't know
- 1:25:22Speaker 2: how I feel.
- 1:25:22Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:25:23Speaker 2: I here's, it's definitely nuanced.
- 1:25:25Speaker 1: I think the way that I think about it, one
- 1:25:28Speaker 1: is how much time has passed since your friend and,
- 1:25:33Speaker 1: and his wife, significant.
- 1:25:34Speaker 2: Other, whatever separated 10 years. Okay.
- 1:25:38Speaker 1: That, to me would seem like long enough time, but
- 1:25:42Speaker 1: then also you probably need to have a conversation with
- 1:25:46Speaker 1: your friend and make sure and, and tell him, Hey, listen, we've,
- 1:25:51Speaker 1: we've reconnected.
- 1:25:52Speaker 2: We, we like each other. What do you think?
- 1:25:56Speaker 4: And at.
- 1:25:59Speaker 1: Some level it's you, it's you and this person's happiness, right?
- 1:26:04Speaker 1: And if you're happy together, It doesn't necessarily, it shouldn't
- 1:26:08Speaker 1: necessarily matter what someone else thinks, but you got to
- 1:26:13Speaker 1: at least do the courtesy of asking, okay, how do
- 1:26:15Speaker 1: you feel about this? We're friends. I don't want this
- 1:26:18Speaker 1: to affect our relationship.
- 1:26:19Speaker 3: I would make an argument that if you work in
- 1:26:21Speaker 3: the NBA, which Popovich still does, like you, you do
- 1:26:25Speaker 3: have to at least give some thought to bro code
- 1:26:28Speaker 3: because there are going to be people around you, locker
- 1:26:31Speaker 3: room culture and stuff.
- 1:26:32Speaker 2: They're going to have thoughts.
- 1:26:33Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:26:34Speaker 3: You know, they're going to, there's, but it's not like
- 1:26:37Speaker 3: this is the first time anything similar to this has happened.
- 1:26:39Speaker 3: There's been a lot of like, you know, celebrities that
- 1:26:43Speaker 3: an actor and an actress get married. And then when
- 1:26:45Speaker 3: they divorce or separate, it's, uh, you know, they, they,
- 1:26:48Speaker 3: they marry another actor or actress or whatever.
- 1:26:50Speaker 2: So like in all of it is we are insular
- 1:26:54Speaker 2: as people, right?
- 1:26:56Speaker 3: This, this happens in every community where you're just like, look,
- 1:26:59Speaker 3: that's my, That's my whatever. That's my ex-husband's cousin or
- 1:27:06Speaker 3: my ex-husband's like mission companion or my ex-husband's old college
- 1:27:11Speaker 3: baseball teammate.
- 1:27:12Speaker 2: Or whatever it is.
- 1:27:14Speaker 3: The links are probably things like subconsciously that make you
- 1:27:18Speaker 3: already like and trust the person.
- 1:27:19Speaker 2: So I don't know. Sure. Yeah.
- 1:27:22Speaker 1: I think if you're going to do it, if you're
- 1:27:24Speaker 1: going to go into it rashly where either you Not
- 1:27:30Speaker 1: that much time has passed, less than maybe a couple
- 1:27:33Speaker 1: years has passed since your friend and their significant other separated.
- 1:27:40Speaker 1: Or it's been a long time, but you haven't even
- 1:27:44Speaker 1: talked to the friend about it.
- 1:27:45Speaker 2: You're probably doing it the wrong way. So I'm hoping.
- 1:27:48Speaker 1: That Pop had a conversation with Bud before he married Mrs.
- 1:27:53Speaker 4: Bud.
- 1:27:56Speaker 2: Ex-Mrs.
- 1:27:56Speaker 4: Bud.
- 1:27:58Speaker 3: That's, that's where it's at with, uh, with Greg Popovich,
- 1:28:02Speaker 3: really fascinating, really interesting stuff.
- 1:28:04Speaker 1: Kind of the last person you'd think would in, in,
- 1:28:08Speaker 1: in NBA circles, you'd think would do something like this though. Well,
- 1:28:12Speaker 1: but also no, because like Greg Popovich strikes me as
- 1:28:16Speaker 1: someone who really, truly just doesn't give a bleep.
- 1:28:19Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:28:19Speaker 3: You know, he's always like, he, he's the guy who would,
- 1:28:23Speaker 3: And he still does. He says he shares his political opinion.
- 1:28:26Speaker 3: He's a guy who's just like, I'm going to be
- 1:28:29Speaker 3: who I am. I'm going to say what I say.
- 1:28:30Speaker 3: And people respect him for that. Whether or not this
- 1:28:35Speaker 3: is viewed positively in the NBA matters on some level,
- 1:28:38Speaker 3: but also not because he's not directly having to deal
- 1:28:42Speaker 3: with teams and players and things like that in a
- 1:28:45Speaker 3: certain way so it's just it's fascinating it's a little
- 1:28:48Speaker 3: soap opera action in the nba uh how about this
- 1:28:51Speaker 3: james brought this to my attention during the break I
- 1:28:54Speaker 3: must not have gotten the email. The Utah jazz are
- 1:28:56Speaker 3: holding an open practice Monday, October 5th at the Delta center.
- 1:29:00Speaker 3: It is free to the public. There's no Dick ticket required.
- 1:29:04Speaker 3: Starts at five. The doors open at four and J
- 1:29:10Speaker 3: dogs for everyone in attendance.
- 1:29:12Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 1:29:12Speaker 1: A free J dog voucher. For everyone in attendance. So
- 1:29:17Speaker 1: free J-Dog voucher. I think you got to probably go
- 1:29:20Speaker 1: to the J-Dogs on the concourse to redeem the voucher.
- 1:29:24Speaker 2: Okay, that's interesting. Because they've had, like, remember the plaza
- 1:29:27Speaker 2: party they had for the, like, Shibuzee and all that
- 1:29:31Speaker 2: stuff at the Delta Center? They just had, like, Tupperware
- 1:29:37Speaker 2: bins full of J-Dogs.
- 1:29:39Speaker 1: The big pep rally type thing when they announced that,
- 1:29:42Speaker 1: NHL is coming to Utah that they had that.
- 1:29:45Speaker 2: I probably took like three home. It was just, wow. Okay.
- 1:29:49Speaker 2: It was supposed to be one each James. Let me
- 1:29:50Speaker 2: just hold on. It was after we left. Okay. I'm
- 1:29:54Speaker 2: calling Ryan Smith.
- 1:29:56Speaker 4: Hold on.
- 1:29:57Speaker 2: Let me get her on the phone.
- 1:29:57Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 1:29:58Speaker 3: Uh, James J dog abuser abused his J dog privileges. Proud,
- 1:30:04Speaker 3: proud J dog abuser.
- 1:30:05Speaker 2: This is great.
- 1:30:05Speaker 3: By the way, by the way, this, uh, the Delta center,
- 1:30:09Speaker 3: the newly remodeled refurbished, uh, shiny Delta center starting next
- 1:30:14Speaker 3: week is just like back to back to back to
- 1:30:16Speaker 3: back events.
- 1:30:18Speaker 2: They're getting people through those doors.
- 1:30:20Speaker 3: They must be incredibly proud of what is going on
- 1:30:22Speaker 3: and incredibly confident that there is no issue with any
- 1:30:27Speaker 3: of the construction and the reconstruction, because it's like, You've
- 1:30:31Speaker 3: got the first Utah Mammoth game. You've got a UFC
- 1:30:35Speaker 3: event that Saturday. You've got an open practice the Monday
- 1:30:40Speaker 3: after that where people can just come in there for free.
- 1:30:44Speaker 3: They're showing off. Smith Entertainment Group is strutting it a
- 1:30:47Speaker 3: little bit. They're flexing.
- 1:30:49Speaker 1: You just mentioned the schedule of events there for sports
- 1:30:53Speaker 1: events there. You'll have an opportunity if you've got tickets
- 1:30:58Speaker 1: to the Mammoth game to see... the new hockey configuration
- 1:31:03Speaker 1: since the renovations. And then this will be your first
- 1:31:07Speaker 1: opportunity to see the jazz configuration after the latest round
- 1:31:12Speaker 1: of renovations. So this, I think this is a savvy
- 1:31:15Speaker 1: move by them to be like, Hey, come see the
- 1:31:17Speaker 1: Delta center for free. See what it'll look like during
- 1:31:22Speaker 1: jazz games and watch our guys make a bunch of
- 1:31:27Speaker 1: watch our guys do a bunch of layup lines and
- 1:31:29Speaker 1: throw down three 60 dunks.
- 1:31:31Speaker 2: For your entertainment.
- 1:31:35Speaker 3: Bear with me. This is a big announcement. In the
- 1:31:38Speaker 3: world of combat sports. Long time heavyweight champion. One of
- 1:31:43Speaker 3: the biggest British stars in the sport. Is now taking
- 1:31:47Speaker 3: on another one of the biggest stars in the sport.
- 1:31:50Speaker 3: Anthony Joshua. Tyson Fury.
- 1:31:53Speaker 9: Years.
- 1:31:53Speaker 3: I mean they've been trying to make this fight for
- 1:31:56Speaker 3: 15 years. And it is finally happening. Friday December 11th.
- 1:32:00Speaker 3: This is another venture of Netflix into the combat sports space,
- 1:32:04Speaker 3: into the sports space in general. AJ versus Tyson Fury
- 1:32:11Speaker 3: heavyweight championship fight.
- 1:32:13Speaker 2: A big thing about this is both of these guys
- 1:32:17Speaker 2: are British. Okay.
- 1:32:18Speaker 3: And this is something that I appreciate immensely about like
- 1:32:23Speaker 3: promoters in boxing are blech for the most part, right?
- 1:32:26Speaker 3: Promoters are, combat sports are really kind of hard to stomach.
- 1:32:30Speaker 3: And you guys already know the reputation of people like
- 1:32:33Speaker 3: Dana white, the Saudis have gotten involved and they've thrown
- 1:32:37Speaker 3: an immense amount of money at boxing.
- 1:32:40Speaker 2: It's real.
- 1:32:40Speaker 3: And like they did with golf, it's really interesting to
- 1:32:43Speaker 3: see the Saudi public investment fund is like peeling a
- 1:32:47Speaker 3: lot of stuff back. They're not just like throwing money
- 1:32:50Speaker 3: at things anymore, getting kind of out of the MMA business.
- 1:32:53Speaker 3: They're being more cautious with their spending in the WWE
- 1:32:56Speaker 3: and the, in the, the sports rate, the, um, like
- 1:32:59Speaker 3: formula one space. Uh, but it's, it's been fascinating to watch. Anyway, Turkey,
- 1:33:05Speaker 3: LL chic is the name of the guy who kind
- 1:33:07Speaker 3: of spearheaded all that for the Saudis. Uh, they wanted
- 1:33:12Speaker 3: this fight in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, Dana white and TKO
- 1:33:19Speaker 3: and several other American promoters wanted to make this fight,
- 1:33:23Speaker 3: which is by a lot of people, uh, like this
- 1:33:26Speaker 3: is a super bowl level event in boxing. They wanted
- 1:33:29Speaker 3: this fight at Madison square garden at the Mecca and
- 1:33:34Speaker 3: Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua are proud Brits. And both
- 1:33:38Speaker 3: of them wanted the fight to happen in England or
- 1:33:42Speaker 3: wanted the fight to happen in the UK. And there,
- 1:33:46Speaker 3: it would be like, you know, the NBA finals playing
- 1:33:53Speaker 3: game seven in Mexico city to have a fight like
- 1:33:57Speaker 3: this happened on American soil, or maybe to have to
- 1:34:02Speaker 3: have it happen in London, right?
- 1:34:03Speaker 2: Where, yeah, sure.
- 1:34:05Speaker 3: It's like a huge market and it totally justifies taking
- 1:34:08Speaker 3: an event like that to London or whatever. There are
- 1:34:11Speaker 3: people who've talked about like a London super bowl is
- 1:34:14Speaker 3: probably an eventuality that feels icky to me because it's
- 1:34:18Speaker 3: an American sport holiday.
- 1:34:20Speaker 2: It's the super bowl is our thing.
- 1:34:23Speaker 3: And a lot of people in the boxing world felt
- 1:34:25Speaker 3: like this fight, if it ever did materialize, belonged to
- 1:34:29Speaker 3: great Britain, belonged to the United Kingdom and, Part of
- 1:34:33Speaker 3: what made it take so long was Vegas, Madison Square Garden,
- 1:34:41Speaker 3: Saudi Arabia. The numbers that you could throw around with
- 1:34:44Speaker 3: some of those venues are potentially a lot different than
- 1:34:47Speaker 3: what you can do in London or where it's ending
- 1:34:50Speaker 3: up now, which is crazy. It's not even in London.
- 1:34:53Speaker 3: This is going to happen in Cardiff, Wales. One of
- 1:34:57Speaker 3: the coolest cities I've ever had an opportunity.
- 1:34:58Speaker 2: To visit, by the way. Cardiff is great.
- 1:35:02Speaker 1: I had not heard of Cardiff before this, so I
- 1:35:06Speaker 1: wondered if it was a place where it actually, within
- 1:35:11Speaker 1: the UK, justifies having a fight this big.
- 1:35:15Speaker 3: Honestly, James, I would not have thought it is big
- 1:35:19Speaker 3: enough of it, because it's like a.
- 1:35:22Speaker 3: I mean, when I think of it, and I've been
- 1:35:25Speaker 3: there for one week, so it's not like I know
- 1:35:27Speaker 3: exactly what I'm talking about.
- 1:35:28Speaker 2: Was it a PFL?
- 1:35:29Speaker 3: We had a PFL event. Principality Stadium is the name
- 1:35:33Speaker 3: of the venue. The same venue you guys were at?
- 1:35:37Speaker 2: No, we were at the smaller one. Okay.
- 1:35:39Speaker 3: This is a stadium. This is like a stadium show.
- 1:35:42Speaker 3: Like a soccer stadium? It's a rugby stadium. Rugby stadium, okay.
- 1:35:45Speaker 3: And it's got a roof on it, so I think
- 1:35:46Speaker 3: that's how they're able to do it for boxing. But
- 1:35:50Speaker 3: this is a big deal. And yeah, the, like they
- 1:35:56Speaker 3: play mostly rugby here there. In fact, if you want
- 1:35:59Speaker 3: to head over there a couple of weeks before the
- 1:36:02Speaker 3: Anthony Joshua Tyson fury fight, you can watch the, uh,
- 1:36:07Speaker 3: the Welsh rugby union team take on the all blacks
- 1:36:10Speaker 3: of New Zealand and then take on Australia in rugby.
- 1:36:13Speaker 2: So like big time thing, this is cool.
- 1:36:17Speaker 3: This is incredible that, uh, Um, and, and look, it's,
- 1:36:22Speaker 3: it's probably not altruism from promoters. They they're doing it
- 1:36:26Speaker 3: in a way that's going to make them a huge
- 1:36:27Speaker 3: amount of money. But the fact that this is a
- 1:36:32Speaker 3: celebration of British boxing talent and they, they're keeping it
- 1:36:36Speaker 3: in Britain to do it. They're keeping it in, in
- 1:36:39Speaker 3: the United Kingdom to do it. I think feels like
- 1:36:42Speaker 3: we should all get on board with it. It's harder
- 1:36:44Speaker 3: for you or I to go attended in person.
- 1:36:46Speaker 2: Now you got to make the trip over to Cardiff.
- 1:36:49Speaker 3: More likely you're just going to watch this thing on Netflix,
- 1:36:51Speaker 3: but it's, it's sort of an anti-sellout sentiment from the fighters.
- 1:36:56Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:36:56Speaker 2: I'll go and I'll do it in Vegas. I'll do
- 1:36:58Speaker 2: it in New York.
- 1:36:59Speaker 3: This was, this is like the super bowl being kept
- 1:37:03Speaker 3: in the United States for boxing.
- 1:37:05Speaker 2: And I like that. You don't get a lot of
- 1:37:07Speaker 2: feel good out of boxing. This makes me feel good.
- 1:37:10Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:37:10Speaker 1: That's cool. I, I wonder locally within the UK, within
- 1:37:15Speaker 1: great Britain, England in particular, How many people are like,
- 1:37:20Speaker 1: you put it in Wales, though? These are English fighters.
- 1:37:23Speaker 1: I wonder if there's that sentiment locally. Obviously, us far
- 1:37:26Speaker 1: removed from there, we don't have that same tribalism that
- 1:37:29Speaker 1: I know exists over there.
- 1:37:31Speaker 2: So that's a curiosity.
- 1:37:32Speaker 3: It's actually really interesting because when you talk like, okay,
- 1:37:36Speaker 3: let's say you go to Dubai where there's just expats
- 1:37:40Speaker 3: all over the place, right? If a fighter from England
- 1:37:43Speaker 3: walks into the cage or into the ring in a
- 1:37:46Speaker 3: situation like that, anyone from the UK is going to
- 1:37:50Speaker 3: be like, that's our guy.
- 1:37:51Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah. Right.
- 1:37:54Speaker 3: If you do it in England and a Welsh fighter
- 1:37:56Speaker 3: walks out, they're getting booed. If you do it in
- 1:37:58Speaker 3: Wales or something, if you do it in Wales and
- 1:38:02Speaker 3: an English fighter walks out like Scotland and Wales, both
- 1:38:06Speaker 3: we've done events in both places. We've had Scotland fighter
- 1:38:09Speaker 3: versus English fighter. The English fighters, they hate them when they're,
- 1:38:14Speaker 3: when they're, it's like, Within the UK, you know how
- 1:38:17Speaker 3: this manifests itself here in the state of Utah. So
- 1:38:22Speaker 3: if you are, if you're going to like, um, if you're,
- 1:38:27Speaker 3: if you're a rugby event or if you had a
- 1:38:28Speaker 3: fight event or something like that. that, and there is
- 1:38:31Speaker 3: a Samoan or a Samoan team on one side and
- 1:38:36Speaker 3: there's a Tongan or a Fijian on the other side,
- 1:38:40Speaker 3: that's a rivalry, right? However, if it's, a Polanyi like
- 1:38:46Speaker 3: you or me on one side, and it's a Polynesian
- 1:38:49Speaker 3: of any origin on the other side, then the more
- 1:38:52Speaker 3: likely scenario is that the, right. It's like, yeah, it's
- 1:38:56Speaker 3: like a proximity level of tribalism where it's just like, well,
- 1:39:01Speaker 3: I'm not Samoan, but I'm Samoan adjacent as being a
- 1:39:04Speaker 3: fellow Polynesian. So if I have to keep up with somebody,
- 1:39:09Speaker 3: one of us in this case, but not one of
- 1:39:11Speaker 3: us in specific cases.
- 1:39:13Speaker 2: That's a great way to put it. One of us
- 1:39:14Speaker 2: in this case, not one of us in every case.
- 1:39:16Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 1:39:17Speaker 3: I think that's what we're getting here in the UK.
- 1:39:19Speaker 3: If it's, Hey, this is either going to happen in
- 1:39:23Speaker 3: Las Vegas or in Cardiff, every English person is just like, yes, Cardiff,
- 1:39:28Speaker 3: don't take it to Vegas. If they were like, it's
- 1:39:30Speaker 3: either going to happen in Cardiff or London, then they're like, dude, London.
- 1:39:33Speaker 2: It's a no brainer. These guys are Brits. I had a,
- 1:39:36Speaker 2: someone in my mission.
- 1:39:38Speaker 1: Um, he's from, he was from Birmingham and he clued
- 1:39:44Speaker 1: me into a lot of the tribalism among the UK nation,
- 1:39:48Speaker 1: the nations in the UK.
- 1:39:50Speaker 2: He talked about, he was a big tennis fan.
- 1:39:53Speaker 1: And so he talked about like Andy, they in America,
- 1:39:56Speaker 1: or they're always talking about Andy Murray. Like he's this
- 1:39:58Speaker 1: great British hope. It's like, he's a Scott. What's the
- 1:40:01Speaker 1: way that was his response to me. And I'm like,
- 1:40:05Speaker 1: I'm like, Oh, interesting. Cause over here, we just, yeah.
- 1:40:08Speaker 1: Like it's all, it's the, it's the United kingdom. They're
- 1:40:11Speaker 1: all probably the same, but over there, it depends on
- 1:40:14Speaker 1: which country you're from before they get on board with you.
- 1:40:20Speaker 3: That's your daily dump here on the Sean O'Connell show.
- 1:40:25Speaker 3: We will sneak in a very quick injury update, and
- 1:40:30Speaker 3: then in the 1 o'clock hour, we'll start with Dishing
- 1:40:34Speaker 3: with Dev. That's next on Utah's number one sports talk,
- 1:40:38Speaker 3: ESPN 700, 92.1 FM. Be tuned to the Sean.
- 1:40:43Speaker 8: O'Connell Show for the Murdoch Chevrolet studio of ESPN 700
- 1:40:50Speaker 8: and 92.1 FM.
- 1:40:58Speaker 2: Put this number in your phone. Do it right now. 801-355-5550.
- 1:41:01Speaker 3: If you're ever hurt in an accident or you know
- 1:41:05Speaker 3: somebody who is, an accident at work, a car accident,
- 1:41:09Speaker 3: you're riding a scooter, a motorcycle, maybe a bear wanders
- 1:41:13Speaker 3: into your neighborhood and you're like, is there anything I
- 1:41:16Speaker 3: can do here legally with this? Call the advocates, 801-355-5550.
- 1:41:22Speaker 3: You deserve an advocate. Injury reports are brought to you
- 1:41:27Speaker 3: by our advocate injury attorneys. Initial report is out for
- 1:41:33Speaker 3: Utah versus Iowa State. You'll get another one today. You'll
- 1:41:35Speaker 3: get another one tomorrow. The Wednesday report, which was issued
- 1:41:40Speaker 3: last night. Marcus Wimberly is out for the University of Utah.
- 1:41:46Speaker 2: You're like, who?
- 1:41:47Speaker 3: He's a backup backup safety. Can I Lopez is also
- 1:41:52Speaker 3: out backup, backup tight end. Monica Carvalho listed as questionable.
- 1:41:58Speaker 3: Carson Cal Fousey listed as questionable. Ike Garcia still listed
- 1:42:03Speaker 3: as questionable on the report for the university of Utah.
- 1:42:07Speaker 3: Mana has been having some issues with fielding punts. I
- 1:42:12Speaker 3: wouldn't be surprised if we don't see Creed Whittemore, especially
- 1:42:15Speaker 3: if Mana is not a hundred percent healthy. Carson Kalfusi,
- 1:42:19Speaker 3: if he can't go or if he's compromised in some way,
- 1:42:22Speaker 3: big loss. He is your biggest, scariest defensive lineman. This
- 1:42:30Speaker 3: is a good run offense for Iowa State. This is
- 1:42:33Speaker 3: an adept, at least, run offense for Iowa State. You
- 1:42:35Speaker 3: need Carson Kalfusi plugging some gaps and keeping blockers off
- 1:42:41Speaker 3: of your backers. So hopefully they can get him right
- 1:42:44Speaker 3: and he can make the trip and actually play in Ames.
- 1:42:49Speaker 3: That being said, can you probably get past Iowa State
- 1:42:53Speaker 3: without your full, full go, your full, full roster?
- 1:42:57Speaker 2: Maybe so.
- 1:42:59Speaker 3: And so you've got to play that game of balance of, hey,
- 1:43:02Speaker 3: if I give him a week to rest, is he
- 1:43:05Speaker 3: then better for the rest of the season? Is he
- 1:43:07Speaker 3: then better for next week against Kansas? Is he then
- 1:43:09Speaker 3: better once we get back from a bye week?
- 1:43:13Speaker 2: We'll see.
- 1:43:14Speaker 3: But that's your injury report. The initial report for Iowa
- 1:43:18Speaker 3: State has a lot more names on it. So that's
- 1:43:21Speaker 3: a total of five guys from the University of Utah.
- 1:43:24Speaker 3: There's about 20 on the list for Iowa State. Trey Verdon,
- 1:43:29Speaker 3: Daniel Howard, and Kamari Moore are the only ones who
- 1:43:31Speaker 3: are out. The reason I bring that up is because there's...
- 1:43:43Speaker 3: There was a question about how Morgan Scali was going
- 1:43:45Speaker 3: to handle his injury reports, whether he would follow the
- 1:43:50Speaker 3: path of his predecessor, where he played everything super close
- 1:43:52Speaker 3: to the vest, whether he would play the game.
- 1:43:55Speaker 2: I think we're finding a middle ground here.
- 1:43:57Speaker 3: He's not going to have 20 names on the out
- 1:44:00Speaker 3: questionable probable spectrum, but he's also not going to say
- 1:44:04Speaker 3: everyone on the whole team is questionable. Let me try
- 1:44:06Speaker 3: to play a trick. That is your advocate injury report.
- 1:44:12Speaker 4: 801-355-5550.
- 1:44:12Speaker 3: If you're hurt in an accident, maybe you're just curious
- 1:44:16Speaker 3: you have a case, call the advocates.
- 1:44:18Speaker 11: 801-355-5550.
- 1:44:20Speaker 3: Dishing with Dev to start our number three on Utah's
- 1:44:25Speaker 3: number one sports talk, ESPN 700, 92.1 FM.
- 1:44:30Speaker 6: It's time to talk to Utah quarterback Devin Dampier. This
- 1:44:34Speaker 6: is Dishing with Devin on the Sean O'Connell Show. Brought
- 1:44:37Speaker 6: to you by Colligan Water, Salt Lake City, America First
- 1:44:40Speaker 6: Credit Union, and Valley Plumbing, Heating and Cooling. Now here's
- 1:44:44Speaker 6: OC with Ute Star signal caller Devin Dampier on your
- 1:44:48Speaker 6: home of the Utes and your home for football.
- 1:44:50Speaker 8: ESPN 792.1 FM.
- 1:44:55Speaker 3: It is that time again on the Sean O'Connell show
- 1:44:58Speaker 3: edition with dev, our conversation with QB one brought to
- 1:45:01Speaker 3: you by America. First credit union, Culligan water of salt
- 1:45:05Speaker 3: Lake city and Valley plumbing, heating, cooling, and excavation.
- 1:45:09Speaker 2: Devin damn pier three and Oh, how you feeling, sir?
- 1:45:13Speaker 7: Always better after a win.
- 1:45:17Speaker 2: Not just a win, a shutout.
- 1:45:19Speaker 3: Now, I know the credit goes to the defense for
- 1:45:21Speaker 3: the shutout part, but everybody gets to enjoy that. It's
- 1:45:24Speaker 3: nice to see a goose egg on the other side.
- 1:45:26Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:45:26Speaker 5: I don't know the last time that's happened, but pretty impressive.
- 1:45:31Speaker 2: We looked it up.
- 1:45:32Speaker 3: The last FBS opponent, so non-FCS opponent, the last FBS
- 1:45:36Speaker 3: shutout was 2019.
- 1:45:38Speaker 2: Dang. So seven years ago.
- 1:45:41Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:45:42Speaker 7: That's crazy.
- 1:45:43Speaker 4: Right?
- 1:45:44Speaker 2: I mean, that means.
- 1:45:45Speaker 3: like potentially two whole classes of football player went through
- 1:45:48Speaker 3: the university of Utah without blanking an opponent.
- 1:45:51Speaker 2: And you guys did it last Saturday.
- 1:45:53Speaker 4: Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:45:54Speaker 7: That's shout out to defense for sure.
- 1:45:56Speaker 5: Cause especially even like with my fumble, I put them
- 1:45:58Speaker 5: in a rough situation and rap gets a pig, like
- 1:46:03Speaker 5: boys capitalize every opportunity.
- 1:46:04Speaker 7: So shout out them.
- 1:46:05Speaker 2: Well, I wasn't going to mention it, but you did
- 1:46:07Speaker 2: the fumble. Tell me what happened. Tell me how it felt.
- 1:46:11Speaker 2: You know, how did it come about?
- 1:46:12Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:46:13Speaker 5: Um, I mean, I'm always disappointed in myself when I
- 1:46:15Speaker 5: fumble the ball, but just it was something we brought
- 1:46:20Speaker 5: up this week, just ball security while falling. Like when
- 1:46:23Speaker 5: you fall, especially forward, it's like your arms is going
- 1:46:26Speaker 5: to brace you from falling. So is this a way
- 1:46:30Speaker 5: of cradling and kind of laying on your shoulder rather
- 1:46:33Speaker 5: than trying to brace yourself with your arms?
- 1:46:37Speaker 2: That's the only negative thing we have to say today,
- 1:46:39Speaker 2: just a review of something.
- 1:46:42Speaker 3: So, look, this was a fun game, and it's a
- 1:46:45Speaker 3: game where there's some familiarity.
- 1:46:47Speaker 2: There's crossover, right?
- 1:46:50Speaker 3: We asked you last week what it was going to
- 1:46:51Speaker 3: be like seeing Bronco Mendenhall and some of the coaches
- 1:46:54Speaker 3: that were on that New Mexico staff. Did you have
- 1:46:56Speaker 3: a chance to catch up and say hello? And like
- 1:46:58Speaker 3: you said, you were going to love up Bronco and
- 1:47:00Speaker 3: expect him to do the same thing.
- 1:47:01Speaker 2: Did that actually happen?
- 1:47:02Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:47:05Speaker 5: I mean, I won't claim anything. I don't know for sure,
- 1:47:06Speaker 5: but it looked like he honestly waited. He didn't get
- 1:47:09Speaker 5: off the field until I said something to him because
- 1:47:13Speaker 5: he was kind of just looking there.
- 1:47:15Speaker 7: I think he was looking for me. So, yeah, I'm glad.
- 1:47:18Speaker 5: I was just excited to find him, too, after I
- 1:47:20Speaker 5: dapped up a couple of the players. It was a
- 1:47:23Speaker 5: very emotional hug he gave me. We bonded a lot
- 1:47:27Speaker 5: when I was at New Mexico and things like that.
- 1:47:29Speaker 5: So just good to see a good person like him.
- 1:47:33Speaker 7: Hey.
- 1:47:35Speaker 3: Before the game happened, he had nice things to say
- 1:47:37Speaker 3: after the game happened.
- 1:47:38Speaker 2: He had nice things to say.
- 1:47:39Speaker 3: I actually talked with a couple of coaches on the
- 1:47:40Speaker 3: staff and like, you always hear respect from opposing coaches
- 1:47:46Speaker 3: about good players like yourself, but to hear like genuine
- 1:47:49Speaker 3: love and affection for a player because of the relationship.
- 1:47:52Speaker 3: And because you know them, it's part of the new
- 1:47:54Speaker 3: landscape of college football, but it talking to those guys,
- 1:47:57Speaker 3: there's a man.
- 1:47:58Speaker 2: Dev is good.
- 1:47:59Speaker 3: He's better now than when we had him in New
- 1:48:01Speaker 3: Mexico too. So You know, that's really an interesting dynamic
- 1:48:05Speaker 3: for me, that that coaching staff knows you as a
- 1:48:08Speaker 3: player but also knows you as a human being. And
- 1:48:10Speaker 3: it's like, even though they wanted to beat you, it
- 1:48:12Speaker 3: seemed like they were also kind of impressed and happy
- 1:48:15Speaker 3: for your success.
- 1:48:16Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:48:16Speaker 5: I always try to surround myself in, like, that's kind
- 1:48:20Speaker 5: of the coaches I pick to play under is the
- 1:48:22Speaker 5: coaches that care about more than just the game and
- 1:48:26Speaker 5: all that. So I'm not saying I didn't expect it,
- 1:48:28Speaker 5: but just how much we've been through and just knowing
- 1:48:32Speaker 5: who they were, that was the reason why I stayed
- 1:48:34Speaker 5: at New Mexico my second year and got to know
- 1:48:37Speaker 5: them pretty well.
- 1:48:42Speaker 2: Your guy Braden Pagan went off in this game.
- 1:48:46Speaker 3: Now, I don't know if that's something that you guys
- 1:48:50Speaker 3: planned is a corny way to say it. Because, of course,
- 1:48:52Speaker 3: you're always planning to have big games and a couple
- 1:48:55Speaker 3: touchdowns and eight catches for 122 yards.
- 1:48:56Speaker 4: But....
- 1:48:58Speaker 3: That's also his former team. He came down from Utah
- 1:49:01Speaker 3: state and I didn't hear much, but I saw, you know,
- 1:49:04Speaker 3: there was a little extracurricular conversation, probably good fun, whatever. Uh,
- 1:49:09Speaker 3: did it seem to you in practice and maybe during
- 1:49:11Speaker 3: the game that this one meant a little extra something
- 1:49:13Speaker 3: special for Brayden?
- 1:49:15Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:49:16Speaker 5: Um, definitely Brayden and, uh, Maggie, you know, we kind
- 1:49:19Speaker 5: of knew they just came from there. This game was
- 1:49:21Speaker 5: going to mean a lot to them to be able
- 1:49:23Speaker 5: to script some and, you know, get things to work
- 1:49:26Speaker 5: for sure. So, uh, I mean, BP, I think he's
- 1:49:30Speaker 5: shown that, you know, he's our one receiver.
- 1:49:32Speaker 7: He's that guy.
- 1:49:34Speaker 5: And personally, you know, he told me, he was like,
- 1:49:38Speaker 5: if there's any point where it's one-on-one, throw me the ball.
- 1:49:42Speaker 5: So kind of just that mentality of him also, though.
- 1:49:45Speaker 5: He wanted it this game. And, you know, every situation,
- 1:49:49Speaker 5: he's definitely capitalizing on it.
- 1:49:53Speaker 2: Okay.
- 1:49:53Speaker 3: So one of the touchdown passes you threw to him,
- 1:49:57Speaker 3: the play before– You got pressured and I think had
- 1:50:01Speaker 3: to throw it.
- 1:50:01Speaker 2: Away or something.
- 1:50:02Speaker 3: And I think it was a backer was chirping. You
- 1:50:06Speaker 3: would run like 30 yards back behind the line of
- 1:50:08Speaker 3: scrimmage or whatever and to the Utah State sideline. And
- 1:50:12Speaker 3: he was chirping and talking to you and you were
- 1:50:15Speaker 3: talking back. And then the very next play, you found
- 1:50:18Speaker 3: Braden Pagan for a long touchdown pass.
- 1:50:21Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:50:21Speaker 2: And I think, correct me if I'm wrong, I think
- 1:50:24Speaker 2: you found him again and maybe said a little something.
- 1:50:27Speaker 8: Now.
- 1:50:28Speaker 3: That's how it goes, Battle of the Brothers, right? But
- 1:50:31Speaker 3: please give me some insight into both ends of that conversation.
- 1:50:35Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:50:40Speaker 5: Again, Scali was telling us beforehand, everybody keep your composure.
- 1:50:44Speaker 5: And I feel like I was keeping my composure for
- 1:50:45Speaker 5: the most part of the first half.
- 1:50:47Speaker 7: And then I.
- 1:50:50Speaker 5: Got a club to my face mask or hand to
- 1:50:54Speaker 5: my face mask, and then he was talking trash.
- 1:50:56Speaker 7: I'm looking at the ref like, You ain't going to
- 1:50:58Speaker 7: call that.
- 1:51:00Speaker 5: And then we get to that drive, and, yeah, I
- 1:51:04Speaker 5: think I threw the ball out or something. And then
- 1:51:07Speaker 5: it was just the fact they were like, they thought
- 1:51:09Speaker 5: they had me or something. They were like, yeah, we're
- 1:51:11Speaker 5: on that. You can't do nothing against us.
- 1:51:14Speaker 3: Which, like, I get it if it was a sack
- 1:51:17Speaker 3: or a true negative play.
- 1:51:19Speaker 2: Like, let a defense sell, right, or whatever. I was laughing.
- 1:51:22Speaker 3: I was sitting with one of my former teammates from Utah,
- 1:51:25Speaker 3: and we're laughing because, like, He basically ran you out
- 1:51:29Speaker 3: of bounds.
- 1:51:30Speaker 2: You threw the ball away, and it's just like.
- 1:51:31Speaker 7: Yeah, he tripped at the wrong guy. I was hot.
- 1:51:34Speaker 2: I was like, what are you.
- 1:51:36Speaker 3: That's not a play to celebrate and talk trash on
- 1:51:38Speaker 3: the quarterback. But anyway, and then the very next play
- 1:51:42Speaker 3: was like, gotcha.
- 1:51:43Speaker 7: Well, yeah. I looked at the ref again. I was like,
- 1:51:45Speaker 7: are you not seeing it?
- 1:51:47Speaker 5: I think, like, not only were they talking trash, they were, like,
- 1:51:50Speaker 5: bumping me while they were doing it.
- 1:51:51Speaker 7: I'm like, ref, are we serious? Like, I'm getting harassed.
- 1:51:54Speaker 7: I was, all right, but... So then, next play, BP was...
- 1:51:59Speaker 7: Went on with the corner, and then, yeah.
- 1:52:01Speaker 5: Yeah, as soon as I let that ball go, I
- 1:52:03Speaker 5: kind of knew BP was going to go get up
- 1:52:05Speaker 5: there and get it. Yeah, I don't know what I said,
- 1:52:09Speaker 5: but some words definitely came out.
- 1:52:10Speaker 2: I don't know if I believe that. It doesn't know
- 1:52:13Speaker 2: what he said on that one, but it's okay.
- 1:52:15Speaker 7: Yeah, I, like, blacked out. Like, I was hot. I
- 1:52:17Speaker 7: was in the moment.
- 1:52:19Speaker 2: We had another big run, by the way. I always
- 1:52:23Speaker 2: read off the stats.
- 1:52:24Speaker 4: 22-32, 2-53.
- 1:52:27Speaker 3: Just under eight yards per completion, two touchdowns, no interceptions.
- 1:52:30Speaker 3: When you went back, you watched your own film, not
- 1:52:32Speaker 3: just those highlight plays, but you know, the, the everyday play,
- 1:52:36Speaker 3: so to speak. Did you feel like this was the
- 1:52:38Speaker 3: execution you wanted from yourself in the game?
- 1:52:41Speaker 5: Um, from a past standpoint, I would say, yeah, there
- 1:52:43Speaker 5: was a couple, um, there's early, early down motions that
- 1:52:47Speaker 5: I forgot or, uh, this decision-making on handing the ball
- 1:52:51Speaker 5: off or not. I could have been cleaner on, but, um,
- 1:52:55Speaker 5: That pass game was pretty solid. One of my better
- 1:52:58Speaker 5: games I've had in that area of the game.
- 1:53:02Speaker 3: What was Utah State doing well against the inside run?
- 1:53:07Speaker 3: You know, Wayshon didn't really break any big ones inside
- 1:53:10Speaker 3: the tackles. Uh, obviously Bray had the big one that
- 1:53:14Speaker 3: went around the edge way. Sean had a huge one
- 1:53:16Speaker 3: called back. Uh, so maybe our conversation would be different, but, uh,
- 1:53:20Speaker 3: you know, you gotta give credit to the Aggies. That
- 1:53:22Speaker 3: is one area leading into the game. We were talking about,
- 1:53:24Speaker 3: this is something they're very good at defending. The run
- 1:53:26Speaker 3: is maybe like the only thing they're very good at
- 1:53:28Speaker 3: this year. And while the team finished with five yards
- 1:53:32Speaker 3: of carry, there were a lot of like two and
- 1:53:33Speaker 3: three yard runs where those could be considered defensive wins.
- 1:53:37Speaker 2: What were they doing well against the run?
- 1:53:39Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:53:39Speaker 5: Um, yeah, we've seen that from, When they play Washington
- 1:53:42Speaker 5: right before us, yeah, that's just something they're dialed in on,
- 1:53:48Speaker 5: on stopping the run. And just also, I mean, that's
- 1:53:52Speaker 5: Broncos mentality. Like, even when I played under them, it's
- 1:53:55Speaker 5: to be tough. It's to win in the box. Make
- 1:53:59Speaker 5: sure those guys are prepared to win in the box
- 1:54:01Speaker 5: in any situation. And Maggie talked about that going into
- 1:54:05Speaker 5: the game.
- 1:54:06Speaker 7: Just even he knows the culture, too. That's something, you know,
- 1:54:09Speaker 7: they thrive in.
- 1:54:12Speaker 3: Um, we talked about this last week. We'll probably talk
- 1:54:15Speaker 3: about this every single week. You know, you get a
- 1:54:17Speaker 3: few of the really interesting, fascinating plays, the unique kind
- 1:54:21Speaker 3: of stuff with the two quarterback, two quarterback system. Um,
- 1:54:26Speaker 3: and you know, we saw a little bit of that.
- 1:54:28Speaker 3: I think maybe less of that in the Utah state
- 1:54:31Speaker 3: game than we saw against Arkansas. Was that a by
- 1:54:34Speaker 3: design thing or are those plays situational? And you, the
- 1:54:38Speaker 3: situations didn't arise where you were going to use like
- 1:54:41Speaker 3: the really super creative stuff.
- 1:54:43Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:54:43Speaker 5: I would say it's kind of situational again. Like the
- 1:54:47Speaker 5: defense doesn't kind of show us that we should do
- 1:54:50Speaker 5: it then.
- 1:54:50Speaker 7: Yeah. We don't run it.
- 1:54:53Speaker 5: We, we go to our other things. Our offense is
- 1:54:55Speaker 5: so versatile. So, um, we just had to kind of
- 1:54:59Speaker 5: take whatever, whatever makes sense.
- 1:55:02Speaker 3: We, uh, what, what day was it, James? We had like,
- 1:55:05Speaker 3: was it Thursday or Friday on the show last week?
- 1:55:08Speaker 3: We were trying to come up with like a catchy
- 1:55:10Speaker 3: name for the two quarterback thing. And I put it
- 1:55:13Speaker 3: out on the text line. I put it out on Twitter.
- 1:55:15Speaker 3: I'm like, what should we be calling this thing? And
- 1:55:17Speaker 3: we got a bunch of like play on words with
- 1:55:19Speaker 3: like the bird and the spider, like the, What we
- 1:55:25Speaker 3: decided was the favorite is two quarters, two quarterbacks. That's
- 1:55:29Speaker 3: 50 cent. Same guy came in. He said, we'll call
- 1:55:32Speaker 3: it the 50 center of the half dollar. I was like,
- 1:55:33Speaker 3: half dollar is a pretty, the half dollar offense sounds
- 1:55:38Speaker 3: pretty awesome. But, What do you like best? Is there like,
- 1:55:43Speaker 3: I mean, I don't know what the package is called,
- 1:55:45Speaker 3: but if it's going to get nicknamed, do you want like,
- 1:55:47Speaker 3: what was the other one?
- 1:55:48Speaker 2: Spider Hawk, they kept calling it.
- 1:55:50Speaker 7: Spider Hawk. Because you're the.
- 1:55:51Speaker 2: Spider, he's a bird. The Hawk is the Utah mascot, whatever.
- 1:55:56Speaker 2: Got a lot of Spider Hawk.
- 1:55:57Speaker 3: Someone brought in like the native language word for spider
- 1:56:01Speaker 3: and hawk. I mean, there was a lot of creativity
- 1:56:03Speaker 3: going on.
- 1:56:04Speaker 2: That's hilarious.
- 1:56:05Speaker 3: I like 50 cent or half dollar the best, but
- 1:56:07Speaker 3: what do you like as a nickname for that offense?
- 1:56:09Speaker 10: I don't know.
- 1:56:10Speaker 7: Those are all new.
- 1:56:11Speaker 5: Um, bird definitely has, I think three or four formations
- 1:56:15Speaker 5: named after him for him to get in with different personnels.
- 1:56:18Speaker 4: All right.
- 1:56:18Speaker 2: So we'll have to brainstorm on that.
- 1:56:21Speaker 7: Yeah. I'm about to get back to that though.
- 1:56:23Speaker 2: I'm going to, Oh yeah.
- 1:56:25Speaker 3: The McDouble was also a really good one because it's
- 1:56:28Speaker 3: Mac G's double quarterback offense.
- 1:56:30Speaker 2: I like McDouble.
- 1:56:31Speaker 7: McDouble. The Mac double. The Mac double.
- 1:56:35Speaker 3: Devin Depp here is our guest here on the Sean
- 1:56:37Speaker 3: O'Connell show edition with Deb is brought to you by
- 1:56:39Speaker 3: Valley Plumbing, Heating, Cooling, and Excavation, Culligan Water of Salt
- 1:56:43Speaker 3: Lake City, and America First Credit Union. So now you
- 1:56:49Speaker 3: move into Big 12 play, and you move into Big
- 1:56:52Speaker 3: 12 play concurrent with your first true road game, your
- 1:56:55Speaker 3: first road game of the season. I know it's great
- 1:56:57Speaker 3: to have three in a row kind of tune things
- 1:56:59Speaker 3: up at Rice-Eckel Stadium, not like you haven't played on
- 1:57:02Speaker 3: the road before. Even the guys that were backups last
- 1:57:05Speaker 3: year played on the road. What do you expect from
- 1:57:08Speaker 3: the first road game of the season at Iowa state?
- 1:57:12Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:57:13Speaker 5: I mean, definitely expected a good crowd. I think they
- 1:57:15Speaker 5: played Iowa pretty solid just coming off momentum. You know,
- 1:57:19Speaker 5: I think this game's matters to them as well. So,
- 1:57:23Speaker 5: and I mean, yeah, they're, they're a strong, tough team
- 1:57:26Speaker 5: and chances of rain coming out there, you know, that
- 1:57:31Speaker 5: game can go either way. Just in the standpoint of,
- 1:57:35Speaker 5: we don't know if it's going to be sunny or,
- 1:57:37Speaker 5: It's going to be truly raining. We have no clue
- 1:57:39Speaker 5: what the circumstances will be, but we're prepared. I think
- 1:57:43Speaker 5: Skyler's doing the right thing. Week by week, we're throwing
- 1:57:47Speaker 5: the ball wet and just small stuff like that just
- 1:57:51Speaker 5: to make sure we're dialed in for any environment we
- 1:57:53Speaker 5: go into.
- 1:57:55Speaker 3: Playing your prep ball in Arizona, you probably didn't have
- 1:57:58Speaker 3: a lot of super bad weather or rainy games. In
- 1:58:01Speaker 3: high school, I don't know how many of you played
- 1:58:03Speaker 3: in college, but do you like a messy game, a
- 1:58:06Speaker 3: muddy game, a wet game?
- 1:58:08Speaker 2: Like some football players enjoy that.
- 1:58:11Speaker 3: Usually it's guys who are slow because it's down, right.
- 1:58:16Speaker 3: And everything's straight line and it's harder to be twitchy
- 1:58:19Speaker 3: on a wet surface. So guys like me enjoy a
- 1:58:21Speaker 3: muddy game. Do you like that stuff?
- 1:58:24Speaker 7: No, it's cool. I mean, that's what I signed up for.
- 1:58:27Speaker 5: I signed up to, play football in any environment but
- 1:58:31Speaker 5: uh yeah i would say cool is the word i
- 1:58:34Speaker 5: wish i wish i could get the whole like i
- 1:58:38Speaker 5: guess there's somewhat of like you dial down on some
- 1:58:41Speaker 5: things just because of yeah again speed the speed you're
- 1:58:44Speaker 5: able to run at on that on the grass and
- 1:58:46Speaker 5: stuff like that but yeah i'm definitely an arizona boy
- 1:58:50Speaker 5: though i'm all about the.
- 1:58:52Speaker 7: Sun being out.
- 1:58:55Speaker 3: So Iowa state, like you said, they're, you know, they're
- 1:58:58Speaker 3: a solid team. They had a really close loss to Iowa.
- 1:59:02Speaker 3: Who's a top 25, big 10 team right now. That's
- 1:59:05Speaker 3: an in-state rivalry for them. That's obviously something, a game
- 1:59:08Speaker 3: that really matters. And those things are sometimes hard to
- 1:59:11Speaker 3: judge by, but what are you seeing from this defense
- 1:59:14Speaker 3: on film in terms of like how quick they swarmed
- 1:59:17Speaker 3: to the ball? Maybe some exotic things, the pressure that
- 1:59:21Speaker 3: they usually bring. I know you're just starting this film study.
- 1:59:24Speaker 3: Just getting this stuff rolling, but what are you seeing?
- 1:59:27Speaker 7: Yeah, honestly, just a little bit of everything. Disguising things.
- 1:59:32Speaker 5: I mean, it's definitely different than, I guess, you could
- 1:59:37Speaker 5: say the old Iowa State meta they used to always run.
- 1:59:40Speaker 5: Like there was an Iowa State kind of thing everyone
- 1:59:43Speaker 5: knew they were in, three safety things. So just kind
- 1:59:46Speaker 5: of them starting their new defense in a way.
- 1:59:50Speaker 3: I mean, we're all– getting used to it. Now you,
- 1:59:53Speaker 3: you experienced it. So I'm sure you're used to it,
- 1:59:56Speaker 3: but like, this is for Iowa state. You got a
- 1:59:59Speaker 3: lot of new, a lot of new players, a lot
- 2:00:01Speaker 3: of new staff. And we have not been able to
- 2:00:04Speaker 3: put our finger on it with you. Like exactly why,
- 2:00:07Speaker 3: but like, it seems like everything about you in year
- 2:00:10Speaker 3: two at the university of Utah is better, more comfortable, smoother, whatever, like,
- 2:00:17Speaker 3: and I attribute it to people ask all the time, what, like,
- 2:00:21Speaker 3: Why is it different this year? And I'm like, well,
- 2:00:24Speaker 3: I think part of it is he's just more comfortable.
- 2:00:26Speaker 3: I don't want to put words in your mouth. I
- 2:00:28Speaker 3: think part of it is he's more comfortable. He's just
- 2:00:30Speaker 3: used to the routine and things like that. And I
- 2:00:32Speaker 3: think also part of it is, especially when we talk
- 2:00:35Speaker 3: about what we saw later in the season, I was like,
- 2:00:38Speaker 3: now you're healthy.
- 2:00:39Speaker 2: Knock on wood. And I've answered those questions to people
- 2:00:45Speaker 2: when we're just casually having conversation. If you can.
- 2:00:50Speaker 3: Describe for me the difference you feel just being in
- 2:00:53Speaker 3: a program for a second year, because there's a ton
- 2:00:55Speaker 3: of Cyclones that are great players, just like you were
- 2:00:59Speaker 3: a great player last year, but it is still their
- 2:01:00Speaker 3: first year. And maybe that full comfort of that full
- 2:01:03Speaker 3: integration hasn't happened yet.
- 2:01:05Speaker 7: Yeah. I'd say probably leadership is the biggest part of that.
- 2:01:11Speaker 5: Like coming into this program, I mean, we talk about
- 2:01:15Speaker 5: it like I'm not. set to be a leader just
- 2:01:18Speaker 5: because I play quarterback like I still had to earn
- 2:01:20Speaker 5: that respect last year and um and I wasn't a
- 2:01:24Speaker 5: captain last year but just again I got to kind
- 2:01:26Speaker 5: of see the the way people carried themselves as you
- 2:01:29Speaker 5: uh Lander and Spencer Jaron all those guys um so
- 2:01:34Speaker 5: yeah that was big for me to just kind of
- 2:01:37Speaker 5: notice that what leadership looks like at the next level
- 2:01:40Speaker 5: and um yeah I just feel like I've kind of
- 2:01:42Speaker 5: fully taken that this year where like I could just
- 2:01:45Speaker 5: tell the whole team I made it important to me
- 2:01:49Speaker 5: this offseason to make sure the whole team kind of
- 2:01:51Speaker 5: respects me as their leader and someone they can trust
- 2:01:54Speaker 5: when things are hard or when things are going good.
- 2:01:56Speaker 7: I'm always going to be the same individual.
- 2:01:59Speaker 5: Just that respect for my team that I was able
- 2:02:01Speaker 5: to gain this year, I think it just, again, allows
- 2:02:04Speaker 5: me to play confident in myself.
- 2:02:07Speaker 7: Also, yeah, being healthy.
- 2:02:10Speaker 5: Is probably definitely the biggest one. I'm able to do
- 2:02:14Speaker 5: what I do out there. There's no second-guessing. What I
- 2:02:17Speaker 5: can and cannot do.
- 2:02:21Speaker 4: All right.
- 2:02:21Speaker 2: The respect thing.
- 2:02:23Speaker 3: We saw in pro football, I don't know if you
- 2:02:25Speaker 3: saw Kayla Williams getting carted off for a hamstring strain
- 2:02:28Speaker 3: and rolling around and screaming on the ground. I was
- 2:02:30Speaker 3: making fun of that. Everyone in the NFL is making
- 2:02:33Speaker 3: fun of that. It's easy to make fun of when
- 2:02:36Speaker 3: you're an armchair quarterback, right? I feel a little more
- 2:02:39Speaker 3: entitled to make fun of people for not being tough
- 2:02:41Speaker 3: because I spent 12 years of my life getting beat
- 2:02:43Speaker 3: up for a living.
- 2:02:44Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 2:02:45Speaker 3: That's neither here nor there. When it comes to football,
- 2:02:48Speaker 3: playing the quarterback position, right? How important is it for
- 2:02:51Speaker 3: you to, to be thought of as like tough, right?
- 2:02:56Speaker 3: If you're a linebacker, you gotta be tough. If you're
- 2:02:58Speaker 3: a fullback, you gotta be tough. If you're an offensive lineman,
- 2:03:00Speaker 3: you better be tough quarterbacks. You want to be known
- 2:03:03Speaker 3: as tough, but being skillful and a good decision maker
- 2:03:07Speaker 3: and having a great arm are all much more important
- 2:03:09Speaker 3: for you personally. How much do you want toughness to
- 2:03:12Speaker 3: be part of your reputation as a QB?
- 2:03:15Speaker 4: A lot.
- 2:03:16Speaker 7: Yeah, you should just know.
- 2:03:19Speaker 5: I want people to be able to tell whoever they're
- 2:03:23Speaker 5: talking to, yeah, my quarterback's going to do whatever it takes.
- 2:03:27Speaker 5: Simple as that. You never know if he's hurt for real.
- 2:03:30Speaker 5: You never know if he's having a bad day for real.
- 2:03:33Speaker 5: He's always that guy. That's kind of the mentality I
- 2:03:35Speaker 5: always wanted as being the QB. I think it matters.
- 2:03:39Speaker 2: I think it matters a lot, too. I think we learned.
- 2:03:41Speaker 3: we didn't know until after the season was over, but
- 2:03:43Speaker 3: I think we learned that about you last year, that
- 2:03:45Speaker 3: he's going to show up.
- 2:03:46Speaker 2: He's not going to complain.
- 2:03:47Speaker 3: There's not going to be any excuses because you, you
- 2:03:49Speaker 3: hit a lot of bumps, bruises, injuries, right? You never
- 2:03:53Speaker 3: said a word about any of it, never complained about
- 2:03:55Speaker 3: any of it. And there's a way you could even
- 2:03:57Speaker 3: do that with your body language, right? Where like you
- 2:03:59Speaker 3: make it obvious that you're hurting when you get up
- 2:04:01Speaker 3: after being hit or something, you never really played up
- 2:04:05Speaker 3: that sort of thing.
- 2:04:05Speaker 2: And so, I appreciate that about you.
- 2:04:08Speaker 3: I also, when I see it from someone at the
- 2:04:10Speaker 3: very highest level, who's a Heisman trophy winner in college
- 2:04:13Speaker 3: and a first round draft pick and all these things,
- 2:04:15Speaker 3: I'm like, I wonder how that affects his teammates and
- 2:04:18Speaker 3: his locker room. We know that fans in a city
- 2:04:21Speaker 3: like Chicago are going to hate on you for it.
- 2:04:23Speaker 3: If you don't redeem yourself with great play, but when
- 2:04:26Speaker 3: you see it at the very highest level, it's like,
- 2:04:27Speaker 3: doesn't that matter also to someone like that? Don't you
- 2:04:31Speaker 3: want people to know that you're not, you're not only
- 2:04:34Speaker 3: great and skilled, but you're tough.
- 2:04:35Speaker 2: Like, Football matters. Toughness matters in football.
- 2:04:38Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 2:04:40Speaker 5: I strive on toughness. That's part of the reason why
- 2:04:42Speaker 5: I'm here at Utah. That's our culture. That's what we preach.
- 2:04:48Speaker 5: Hopefully he was that hurt where he really felt like
- 2:04:50Speaker 5: it needed to be what it was, the situation.
- 2:04:55Speaker 2: I guess.
- 2:04:55Speaker 7: But, yeah.
- 2:04:57Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 2:04:58Speaker 3: I'm not worried about our guy. I'm not worried about
- 2:05:00Speaker 3: Devin Depp here being, being turned into a meme. Like
- 2:05:02Speaker 3: we saw on Twitter with the cart and the tears
- 2:05:06Speaker 3: and the thumbs up and all that stuff. Back to
- 2:05:09Speaker 3: more important things back to big 12 play. There's, you know,
- 2:05:13Speaker 3: some of the results I won't say have been surprising,
- 2:05:16Speaker 3: but as we've looked around the conference, it's like, okay,
- 2:05:19Speaker 3: Houston and Texas tech played a great game last Friday.
- 2:05:24Speaker 3: Both teams looked awesome. Texas tech ended up winning that game.
- 2:05:27Speaker 3: BYU looked really good again. You guys looked really good again.
- 2:05:31Speaker 3: Kansas State looks awesome. West Virginia all of a sudden
- 2:05:34Speaker 3: belongs in the conversation. I don't know how much you've
- 2:05:37Speaker 3: been able to watch of the rest of the conference.
- 2:05:39Speaker 3: You had a day game, so maybe caught some night
- 2:05:41Speaker 3: action and things like that. But it seems like the
- 2:05:45Speaker 3: race is shaping up at least a little bit, and
- 2:05:48Speaker 3: maybe there's some surprises in there.
- 2:05:51Speaker 5: Yeah. I honestly think our conference is getting pretty good.
- 2:05:56Speaker 5: better like we're starting to we're starting to average out
- 2:05:59Speaker 5: and you know hopefully all of us are able to
- 2:06:03Speaker 5: show that like going into these weeks where we are
- 2:06:07Speaker 5: playing each other and stuff like that people are playing
- 2:06:09Speaker 5: at a high level just because like even at the
- 2:06:12Speaker 5: top 25 I think there's like 10 SEC in there
- 2:06:15Speaker 5: there's like eight big 12 four ACC and then like
- 2:06:21Speaker 5: four of us or something something like that I forgot
- 2:06:23Speaker 5: what what it was but I just think we're showing
- 2:06:28Speaker 5: that it should be a little bit more leveled out
- 2:06:30Speaker 5: where maybe you take two of those SEC teams out
- 2:06:33Speaker 5: and maybe one of those Big Tens, and you start
- 2:06:36Speaker 5: putting a couple of Big 12s in there just because
- 2:06:38Speaker 5: I think, honestly, our conference is playing at a high level.
- 2:06:43Speaker 3: Three Big 12 teams in the top 15 right now, BYU,
- 2:06:48Speaker 3: Texas Tech, and Utah.
- 2:06:50Speaker 2: Houston is in the top 25 at 25. West Virginia,
- 2:06:51Speaker 2: Oklahoma State. They're in that also getting votes category. Arizona's
- 2:07:00Speaker 2: some people cast a vote for Arizona, but they're a
- 2:07:02Speaker 2: little bit further back. So I think the conference is
- 2:07:05Speaker 2: getting a decent amount of respect. I just think that
- 2:07:08Speaker 2: everyone then gives even more to the sec and the
- 2:07:12Speaker 2: big 10, which is annoying, but it's something you're just.
- 2:07:15Speaker 5: Going to have to deal with for a while, Sally.
- 2:07:19Speaker 3: So day game, what, what was the rest of the
- 2:07:21Speaker 3: day like for you on Saturday? Obviously celebrating a big win.
- 2:07:26Speaker 3: You iced it up, or did you get to go
- 2:07:28Speaker 3: hang out with the family? What did you do with
- 2:07:29Speaker 3: the rest of your day? Yeah, I always get dinner
- 2:07:32Speaker 3: with my family after games. This is some– I.
- 2:07:36Speaker 5: Don't know why, but I love the environment of just
- 2:07:41Speaker 5: being with my family, going to get dinner and sit down.
- 2:07:44Speaker 5: So we went to Capitol Grill last week, and, yeah,
- 2:07:47Speaker 5: it was great.
- 2:07:48Speaker 7: Just good vibes. And then went home.
- 2:07:51Speaker 5: We actually got to watch the– it was Ole Miss–
- 2:07:54Speaker 5: Ole Miss and LSU that night.
- 2:07:55Speaker 2: Ole Miss and LSU.
- 2:07:57Speaker 5: Yeah, we got to watch that game, which was– that
- 2:07:59Speaker 5: was fun, entertaining. For me to be a fan with
- 2:08:02Speaker 5: my family, like be able to watch games together. But, yeah,
- 2:08:05Speaker 5: there's so many vibes after the game.
- 2:08:08Speaker 3: Last thing before we let you go, the schedule on
- 2:08:12Speaker 3: the road, like, Each head coach has their own routines, right?
- 2:08:15Speaker 3: And Morgan Scali strikes me as a guy who's going
- 2:08:18Speaker 3: to keep things more the same than try to change things.
- 2:08:20Speaker 3: But do you know yet what the routine for the
- 2:08:23Speaker 3: road game is going to look like? I imagine it
- 2:08:25Speaker 3: was probably similar to what you guys did in the bowl.
- 2:08:28Speaker 5: Yeah, I guess it would be similar to even what
- 2:08:31Speaker 5: we've been doing here. We'll probably leave earlier just so.
- 2:08:37Speaker 5: what our day normally starts like on Friday feels the
- 2:08:39Speaker 5: same as what it starts like when we're out there
- 2:08:42Speaker 5: to give that same vibe of what time we eat dinner.
- 2:08:46Speaker 7: Um, what's up?
- 2:08:48Speaker 5: Rather we watch a movie or not. Rather we, um,
- 2:08:52Speaker 5: just chill and hang out as a team. He probably
- 2:08:54Speaker 5: keep that all the same. Just so, you know, we
- 2:08:56Speaker 5: feel good about going into the game, feel normal.
- 2:09:00Speaker 2: Uh, for my sake, I hope there's rain for Devin,
- 2:09:02Speaker 2: Dan Pierce sake. I hope it's a nice dry game.
- 2:09:05Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 2:09:06Speaker 2: In, Iowa.
- 2:09:07Speaker 3: When they take on the Iowa state cyclones at Jack
- 2:09:10Speaker 3: tri stadium, that'll be a one 30 mountain time kickoff.
- 2:09:13Speaker 3: The game is on Fox and QB one Devin Dampier.
- 2:09:17Speaker 3: We wish you luck. Stay healthy. Thanks again for giving
- 2:09:20Speaker 3: us some time. Maybe a little stuffy feel better. We
- 2:09:22Speaker 3: hope for that.
- 2:09:23Speaker 4: I know. Yeah.
- 2:09:24Speaker 2: Good thing.
- 2:09:24Speaker 5: It's early in the week. It should be gone by weekend.
- 2:09:27Speaker 2: We're recording this early in the week. So you should
- 2:09:29Speaker 2: be all right. Just a little vitamin C. Thanks for
- 2:09:32Speaker 2: being here, Dev. Thank you. That's dishing with Devin Dampier.

- 2:10:27Speaker 3: we have on our YouTube page. PGA Tour leaderboard updates

- 2:11:25Speaker 3: diagram would come into play for you.
- 2:11:27Speaker 2: Get those two things together.
- 2:11:30Speaker 3: The leaderboard, we checked the leaderboard earlier, and there were
- 2:11:35Speaker 3: no scores yet.
- 2:11:37Speaker 2: Yeah, I actually do have an update.
- 2:11:40Speaker 3: Okay, so this leaderboard update is actually an update on
- 2:11:43Speaker 3: the real leaderboard.
- 2:11:44Speaker 2: It is, and you know what?
- 2:11:45Speaker 1: There may have been some kind of leaderboard last time.
- 2:11:48Speaker 1: It's just really hard to find. A lot harder to
- 2:11:50Speaker 1: find than a PGA Tour event. So this is the
- 2:11:53Speaker 1: President's Cup. It's Ryder Cup-esque, except it's not.
- 2:11:57Speaker 4: U.S.
- 2:11:58Speaker 2: Versus Europe, it's U.S. versus the world.
- 2:12:02Speaker 4: U.S.
- 2:12:02Speaker 2: Versus international.
- 2:12:03Speaker 1: A lot of Asian players are on the international, so
- 2:12:08Speaker 1: maybe it's more of the Asian tour. But anyway, it's
- 2:12:12Speaker 1: four ball today is the format. And there's a bunch
- 2:12:18Speaker 1: of guys going at the same time. So right now
- 2:12:20Speaker 1: there's a tie in the four ball matchup with, Scotty
- 2:12:24Speaker 1: Scheffler and Sam Burns, that's the American pairing against Minwoo
- 2:12:27Speaker 1: Lee and Sungjae Im.
- 2:12:29Speaker 2: They're tied through ten holes.
- 2:12:32Speaker 1: Cam Young and Xander Shoffley, the Americans are down two
- 2:12:39Speaker 1: to Hideki Matsuyama and Ryu Hisatsune, who are two up.
- 2:12:44Speaker 2: They're through nine.
- 2:12:46Speaker 1: Let's see, Justin Thomas, Jackson Colvin are two up on
- 2:12:49Speaker 1: Corey Connors and Nico Echevarria. And Wyndham Clark and Colin
- 2:12:56Speaker 1: Morikawa in the American pairing is two up on Ryan
- 2:13:00Speaker 1: Fox and Adam Scott, the Aussies. And then tied right
- 2:13:05Speaker 1: now through six holes, Chris Goddard up, Patrick Cantlay, the
- 2:13:08Speaker 1: American side, Tom Kim and Siwoo Kim on the international side.
- 2:13:14Speaker 1: So pretty tight so far.
- 2:13:17Speaker 4: U.S.
- 2:13:17Speaker 1: Has three pairings projected to win. International is projected to
- 2:13:22Speaker 1: have two of those pairings to win. Um, and I,
- 2:13:25Speaker 1: it says 15 and a half to win Thursday's four ball.
- 2:13:31Speaker 1: So if you're a golf person, you know what that means? Congratulations.
- 2:13:34Speaker 2: Uh, my favorite format for ball.
- 2:13:36Speaker 3: Don't ask me to explain it to you because then
- 2:13:39Speaker 3: I just have to talk down.
- 2:13:40Speaker 2: It'll make me sound like a jerk, you know? Yeah.
- 2:13:43Speaker 2: I don't want that to happen.
- 2:13:44Speaker 1: You guys already hate when we talk golf and you're
- 2:13:46Speaker 1: going to, you'd hate it even more.
- 2:13:49Speaker 3: Oh, our leaderboard updates are brought to you by our
- 2:13:51Speaker 3: friends over at you. Went to golf by worldwide golf. Look,
- 2:13:54Speaker 3: watching it is not my bag playing it, getting out
- 2:13:58Speaker 3: there on the driving range. Let you into golf, set
- 2:14:01Speaker 3: you up for all that stuff. Tool response savings. You
- 2:14:06Speaker 3: can save on Taylor made golf balls for a limited time.
- 2:14:10Speaker 3: If you're looking for the new Taylor made more responsive,
- 2:14:12Speaker 3: better range, all the good stuff engineered for your games. Maximization.
- 2:14:19Speaker 3: You went to golf shops all up and down the
- 2:14:21Speaker 3: Wasatch Front. Telemose sent you. This is a story that
- 2:14:25Speaker 3: kind of snuck up, quietly came into play because I
- 2:14:31Speaker 3: guess there are bigger names that also had similar things happen.
- 2:14:36Speaker 3: But if you are a Utah football fan and you
- 2:14:39Speaker 3: were a Utah football fan last year, you may remember
- 2:14:42Speaker 3: a young man who goes by the name of the
- 2:14:45Speaker 3: Kerry Rogers. Well, he's been trying to battle his way
- 2:14:51Speaker 3: back onto a football roster here in the fall because.
- 2:14:56Speaker 2: Utah would be the one that he's trying to get
- 2:14:58Speaker 2: back on.
- 2:14:58Speaker 3: You would think so, but actually he's committed to West Virginia. Oh,
- 2:15:02Speaker 3: the Kerry Rogers is going to be playing against Utah
- 2:15:06Speaker 3: later this year.
- 2:15:08Speaker 4: Wow.
- 2:15:09Speaker 2: I do not like this.
- 2:15:11Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 2:15:11Speaker 1: Screw that guy. No, that's That's unexpected. We heard this
- 2:15:16Speaker 1: speculation in fall camp, OC, once the lawsuits, the injunctions
- 2:15:21Speaker 1: started to be put in place for these fifth-year guys
- 2:15:25Speaker 1: who are not part of the.
- 2:15:29Speaker 2: Five-for-five rule yet.
- 2:15:31Speaker 1: We thought, okay, maybe that opens the door for Nakari
- 2:15:34Speaker 1: to come back, but apparently come back for the Mountaineers.
- 2:15:40Speaker 3: Last year, you had 10 rushing touchdowns from Devin Dampier.
- 2:15:45Speaker 3: You had 10 rushing touchdowns from Bert Ficklin. You had
- 2:15:48Speaker 3: six rushing touchdowns from way.
- 2:15:50Speaker 2: Sean Parker. Guess which? You had 11 rushing touchdowns last year. Rogers.
- 2:15:57Speaker 2: He was the short yardage Rogers. The goal line was
- 2:16:03Speaker 2: his neighborhood.
- 2:16:05Speaker 4: Nice. Nice. All right.
- 2:16:06Speaker 2: That's actually pretty good. Most, most of the time you
- 2:16:10Speaker 2: get a want wall. That one was, that's a, that's good.
- 2:16:14Speaker 2: I liked that. It's a laugh about a quarter of
- 2:16:15Speaker 2: the time. Oh, so look.
- 2:16:20Speaker 3: Again, it kind of sneaks under the radar a little
- 2:16:22Speaker 3: bit because like, you know, Arizona got their leading rusher
- 2:16:28Speaker 3: from last year and their leading tackler from last year back.
- 2:16:31Speaker 3: Indiana is getting a couple of big time defensive players back.
- 2:16:37Speaker 3: after winning battles in court, legal injunctions and such. But, uh, yeah,
- 2:16:44Speaker 3: this one, it's, uh, Stephen Daly and Kellen Wyatt are
- 2:16:48Speaker 3: now eligible to play for Indiana. A judge granted a
- 2:16:51Speaker 3: preliminary injunction in their case against the NCAA. There's dozens
- 2:16:57Speaker 3: of athletes still trying to fight this battle.
- 2:16:59Speaker 2: And Rogers, Dakari Rogers was one of them.
- 2:17:02Speaker 3: And, uh, He is now committed to play for West Virginia.
- 2:17:06Speaker 3: Even if this gets tied up a little bit more
- 2:17:09Speaker 3: and if there's another court reversal, they've got until the
- 2:17:14Speaker 3: final game of the year to get him ready to
- 2:17:16Speaker 3: play against his old team, the University of Utah. And
- 2:17:19Speaker 3: this team already runs the ball incredibly well because they've
- 2:17:22Speaker 3: got the next Michael Vick, the next Pat White is
- 2:17:29Speaker 3: the right way to say that. You don't want to
- 2:17:30Speaker 3: call him Michael Vick. The next Pat White at West
- 2:17:32Speaker 3: Virginia right now.
- 2:17:34Speaker 1: Rich Rod didn't coach Michael Vick anyway, so Pat White's
- 2:17:37Speaker 1: the one that's out.
- 2:17:38Speaker 2: It's like he found Pat White Jr. And that's a problem, man.
- 2:17:44Speaker 3: And this game, right, final game of the season where
- 2:17:48Speaker 3: we had it, and we're always wrong. when we pencil
- 2:17:50Speaker 3: things in and we have expectations. If it keeps trending
- 2:17:54Speaker 3: the way it's trending, West Virginia is going to be
- 2:17:57Speaker 3: as difficult to stop in the run game as anyone else.
- 2:17:59Speaker 3: And now they get a guy that we know up
- 2:18:02Speaker 3: close and personal is a quality running back, especially like
- 2:18:06Speaker 3: you said, in those short yardage situations, uh, He scored
- 2:18:09Speaker 3: 11 touchdowns for the Utes last year. He was under
- 2:18:13Speaker 3: four yards a carry, but they gave him timely carries.
- 2:18:17Speaker 3: He was good at running through contact. Did not catch
- 2:18:20Speaker 3: the ball out of the backfield particularly well. Seeking his
- 2:18:23Speaker 3: fifth year, and he got it. Over the course of
- 2:18:27Speaker 3: his career, he had 357 carries for just about 1,600 yards,
- 2:18:29Speaker 3: four and a half yard average. 26 touchdowns so far
- 2:18:37Speaker 3: and whichever ones he can score now will be for the.
- 2:18:40Speaker 2: West Virginia mountaineers. I, I would have liked to see him.
- 2:18:50Speaker 2: Pardon me.
- 2:18:50Speaker 3: I would have liked to see him come back and
- 2:18:51Speaker 3: be part of this Utah football roster. I understand that
- 2:18:56Speaker 3: they already have a lot of depth in the running
- 2:18:57Speaker 3: back room and it's probably a difficult thing, especially when
- 2:19:02Speaker 3: you're a newly established head coach. to say, I made
- 2:19:08Speaker 3: a certain promises to Daniel Bray. I made certain promises
- 2:19:11Speaker 3: to Steven Chavez Soto. I made certain promises to bam.
- 2:19:16Speaker 3: I made certain promises to way Sean Parker and then say, oh,
- 2:19:20Speaker 3: by the way, we're bringing in another horse in this race.
- 2:19:25Speaker 3: I do believe there will be a time when Morgan
- 2:19:27Speaker 3: Scali gets to a point in his career where he's
- 2:19:30Speaker 3: just like, yeah, man, just deal with it.
- 2:19:32Speaker 2: It's competition.
- 2:19:35Speaker 3: Maybe he's already there, but I think it, you know,
- 2:19:38Speaker 3: and maybe, maybe Roger, maybe the car didn't really like
- 2:19:40Speaker 3: it in Utah, but he was productive and he was
- 2:19:42Speaker 3: a good player. It sucks to see him go into
- 2:19:45Speaker 3: West Virginia. I think this is like quietly a big,
- 2:19:48Speaker 3: big move for the Mountaineers.
- 2:19:50Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 2:19:50Speaker 1: It could be also, he came to Utah from New
- 2:19:55Speaker 1: Mexico with Devin, with Jason Beck. It could be as
- 2:19:58Speaker 1: simple as, Hey, the guy who recruited me, no one
- 2:20:01Speaker 1: in that building actually recruited me anymore. And maybe his
- 2:20:06Speaker 1: guys reached out to Michigan and they were good at
- 2:20:08Speaker 1: running back. And so they took the best offer besides that.
- 2:20:14Speaker 1: And maybe that's West Virginia.
- 2:20:16Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 2:20:17Speaker 1: I wonder also, since we're hearing about this now, after
- 2:20:22Speaker 1: three games have been played, I wonder if he's also observed, hey,
- 2:20:26Speaker 1: they don't hand the ball off nearly as much under
- 2:20:30Speaker 1: Kevin McGiven as they did under Jason Beck last year.
- 2:20:34Speaker 4: So.
- 2:20:35Speaker 2: Maybe as much as.
- 2:20:37Speaker 1: I would like to reunite with Devin and come back
- 2:20:40Speaker 1: to Utah, maybe that's not the best place for me
- 2:20:43Speaker 1: as a running back this year. Maybe that's a reaction
- 2:20:45Speaker 1: to the first three games of the season, which is
- 2:20:49Speaker 1: not that fair because, for all we know, McGiven's conference
- 2:20:54Speaker 1: play is going to start.
- 2:20:55Speaker 2: He's going to start being run heavy. Who knows? That
- 2:20:58Speaker 2: would be surprising. But, yeah, we'll see.
- 2:21:01Speaker 3: Look, there's... Any number of reasons why Nakari Rogers could
- 2:21:08Speaker 3: have said, the grass is greener somewhere else. And you
- 2:21:12Speaker 3: have to allow for the fact that maybe this could
- 2:21:15Speaker 3: just be an NIL thing. Also, if he is watching
- 2:21:18Speaker 3: the teams and still being selective, if he's watching all
- 2:21:21Speaker 3: these different teams, maybe West Virginia was just like, dude,
- 2:21:24Speaker 3: we don't want to have to run our quarterback this much.
- 2:21:27Speaker 3: We need you more than Utah needs you. And if
- 2:21:29Speaker 3: that's the case, then Rich Rod and company would be like,
- 2:21:34Speaker 3: We're going to back up the coal truck for you.
- 2:21:38Speaker 2: I mean, I want good things for the guy.
- 2:21:39Speaker 3: I just don't want bad things to happen to Utah's
- 2:21:43Speaker 3: final game of the season because of it. But sneaky
- 2:21:46Speaker 3: major development in Big 12 play as West Virginia so
- 2:21:50Speaker 3: far has been kind of one of those surprising teams
- 2:21:53Speaker 3: that is overperforming the non-conference expectation and the off-season expectation.
- 2:22:04Speaker 3: One more segment to go here on the Sean O'Connell Show.
- 2:22:06Speaker 3: Is Spence around today? Will he be here, or is
- 2:22:09Speaker 3: he on remote?
- 2:22:11Speaker 2: He's here. You never know.
- 2:22:12Speaker 1: Yeah, he's here. We have some remotes next week, I think,
- 2:22:16Speaker 1: for both of you guys. This week, we're in studio.
- 2:22:18Speaker 4: All right.
- 2:22:19Speaker 2: You'll love that.

- 2:23:28Speaker 3: Chekits is up next here on ESPN 700 at 92.1 FM.
- 2:23:32Speaker 2: Spence, how are you? Hey, Sean. There we go. I'm
- 2:23:36Speaker 2: a little tired today.
- 2:23:37Speaker 11: I don't know anything about dentists and what they do,
- 2:23:44Speaker 11: how that works.
- 2:23:45Speaker 4: Okay.
- 2:23:46Speaker 11: So your boy got a little loose with a high
- 2:23:48Speaker 11: chew over the weekend. Popped a high chew, a little stale, boom.
- 2:23:53Speaker 11: Molar pops out.
- 2:23:54Speaker 4: Wow.
- 2:23:54Speaker 2: Implant, right?
- 2:23:57Speaker 11: And I can feel with my tongue there's like a
- 2:23:58Speaker 11: little screw because it's an implant.
- 2:24:01Speaker 4: Uh-huh.
- 2:24:02Speaker 11: And luckily my dentist is a friend of mine, so
- 2:24:03Speaker 11: I just text him like, hey, can I come in
- 2:24:06Speaker 11: next week and you can just screw the thing back in?
- 2:24:08Speaker 11: He's like, that's not really how it works, but go ahead.
- 2:24:12Speaker 11: So rolling this morning, I'm expecting like a, 10, 20
- 2:24:16Speaker 11: minute situation, 90 minutes. Cause it's not a screw. It's
- 2:24:20Speaker 11: like a piece of the implant. So he had to
- 2:24:22Speaker 11: take that out. So a little numb.
- 2:24:25Speaker 2: There are very few things.
- 2:24:26Speaker 11: So the old question is, would you rather have a
- 2:24:30Speaker 11: root canal or move?
- 2:24:32Speaker 2: Would you rather move into a new home or an
- 2:24:34Speaker 2: apartment or would you rather have a root canal?
- 2:24:37Speaker 3: I guess I would, I'll take the move because there's
- 2:24:40Speaker 3: at least some fun. There's like a, there's a good
- 2:24:43Speaker 3: part of the move like oh you're at a new
- 2:24:44Speaker 3: place you like the new place you're excited about settling
- 2:24:47Speaker 3: in the moving part is abysmal it's awful yeah but
- 2:24:51Speaker 3: root canals i don't know if there's any good part
- 2:24:53Speaker 3: of a root canal no.
- 2:24:54Speaker 11: There's zero good parts of a root canal uh but
- 2:24:56Speaker 11: moving such a pain in the ass yeah when you
- 2:24:59Speaker 11: talk for four hours in the afternoon spending 90 minutes
- 2:25:01Speaker 11: in a dental chair because i'm still a little numb
- 2:25:04Speaker 11: on the left side you.
- 2:25:06Speaker 2: Can have a little drool on the youtube page potentially
- 2:25:08Speaker 2: today um can i tell you why i was up
- 2:25:11Speaker 2: late last night Did it have to do with your children?
- 2:25:14Speaker 4: Nope.
- 2:25:15Speaker 2: Okay.
- 2:25:16Speaker 3: But there was an unruly young creature that caused me
- 2:25:18Speaker 3: to stay up late.
- 2:25:20Speaker 2: An animal of some sort? It happened to be a bear.
- 2:25:23Speaker 2: A bear? There was a bear in the avenues last night.
- 2:25:27Speaker 2: That's rather rare, correct?
- 2:25:29Speaker 9: Yes.
- 2:25:30Speaker 2: Doesn't happen often. There was a bear in the avenues.
- 2:25:33Speaker 2: What kind? A young black bear.
- 2:25:35Speaker 7: Okay.
- 2:25:36Speaker 3: Little tiny thing. I got an update, by the way,
- 2:25:40Speaker 3: on the text line. That was someone who was also
- 2:25:44Speaker 3: following the story. And apparently they have decided to relocate
- 2:25:49Speaker 3: after a health assessment, relocate this bear to natural bear
- 2:25:54Speaker 3: habitat in Utah County, placed in a culvert trap and
- 2:25:58Speaker 3: released into better habitat than, you know, the upper avenues.
- 2:26:02Speaker 2: How does one how does a bear find its way
- 2:26:05Speaker 2: to the Alps?
- 2:26:06Speaker 3: Well, I was told by the Department of Wildlife Resources
- 2:26:10Speaker 3: that there's a lot of cub abandonment happening right now
- 2:26:13Speaker 3: because it's been a very stressful summer for bears.
- 2:26:17Speaker 2: We had a late frost.
- 2:26:19Speaker 3: The stone fruits, the berries, the acorns did not grow
- 2:26:24Speaker 3: like they're supposed to. So food sources in the high
- 2:26:27Speaker 3: country have been tough. And the mama bears are having
- 2:26:30Speaker 3: a hard time keeping their cubs going and feeding themselves.
- 2:26:33Speaker 3: So there's been some cub abandonment. Now, We had this, like,
- 2:26:36Speaker 3: latchkey bear in the avenues last night, and it was awesome.
- 2:26:41Speaker 2: I got to pet the bear. You actually were able
- 2:26:44Speaker 2: to pet the bear?
- 2:26:45Speaker 4: Yeah. Wow.
- 2:26:45Speaker 2: I don't know if I was supposed to.
- 2:26:46Speaker 3: I just kind of inserted myself into the operation of
- 2:26:50Speaker 3: the Department of Wildlife Resources.
- 2:26:53Speaker 2: But I did get to pet a wild bear.
- 2:26:56Speaker 11: I'm more surprised that bears are deadbeat parents these days.
- 2:26:59Speaker 11: I didn't know that.
- 2:27:01Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 2:27:01Speaker 2: I didn't know that. Can't feed you anymore, kid.
- 2:27:04Speaker 3: It's honestly distressing to learn something like that when you're
- 2:27:06Speaker 3: just like, oh, mama bear, don't go anywhere near mama bear.
- 2:27:09Speaker 2: She'll rip your face off.
- 2:27:12Speaker 3: Or she'll just completely abdicate her responsibility and peace out
- 2:27:17Speaker 3: on the poor baby.
- 2:27:18Speaker 2: Or is it deadbeat dads? I mean, I think we
- 2:27:20Speaker 2: need to look into this.
- 2:27:21Speaker 3: I think that in the animal kingdom, like 90% of
- 2:27:25Speaker 3: the dads are deadbeats.
- 2:27:26Speaker 2: Huh.
- 2:27:27Speaker 11: It sounds like a problem if cubs are going to
- 2:27:30Speaker 11: be wandering around Around the avenues. I've never seen a
- 2:27:32Speaker 11: bear up close. What was it like? Did they look scary?
- 2:27:36Speaker 11: Were there claws involved?
- 2:27:37Speaker 2: He was like 25 pounds. So you could have taken
- 2:27:39Speaker 2: him if you wanted.
- 2:27:40Speaker 4: To.
- 2:27:40Speaker 2: I wanted to take him home and make him my friend.
- 2:27:42Speaker 2: He's like a cuddly little bear. Did you have your
- 2:27:45Speaker 2: dog around?
- 2:27:46Speaker 4: No.
- 2:27:47Speaker 2: I wonder what that would.
- 2:27:48Speaker 4: Have been like.
- 2:27:48Speaker 11: Because your dog is a very friendly dog, but he's
- 2:27:52Speaker 11: very big and strong.
- 2:27:53Speaker 2: He was. Well, I'm glad it all worked out.
- 2:27:58Speaker 11: Yeah, there was a bear up at our mountain home
- 2:28:02Speaker 11: once upon a time, but just wandered in the backyard
- 2:28:05Speaker 11: and then just left.
- 2:28:06Speaker 2: Big boy. But yeah, I've never had the opportunity to
- 2:28:09Speaker 2: see a bear up close. Yeah, so follow the story
- 2:28:12Speaker 2: of the Avenues Bear.
- 2:28:12Speaker 3: Hopefully they put like a tracker on him so we
- 2:28:14Speaker 3: can know if he or she ends up having a
- 2:28:17Speaker 3: great life down in Utah County.
- 2:28:20Speaker 2: They won't, but speaking of bears, you ever eat dinner naked?
- 2:28:26Speaker 2: Don't do this. You didn't talk about this?
- 2:28:29Speaker 3: I don't want to talk about this. It deserves to
- 2:28:34Speaker 3: be talked about. Okay, so this is from two weeks ago.
- 2:28:37Speaker 3: I watched the game live.
- 2:28:38Speaker 2: So did I.
- 2:28:39Speaker 3: I was watching when RG3 told the story of the
- 2:28:43Speaker 3: Bachmeier family eating dinners together naked. And I was like,
- 2:28:46Speaker 3: there is something weird going on here. There must have
- 2:28:51Speaker 3: been some miscommunication that happened.
- 2:28:56Speaker 2: There's no way that's real.
- 2:28:58Speaker 11: So we had a texter send in, because I didn't,
- 2:29:00Speaker 11: I watched the game live and did not hear it.
- 2:29:02Speaker 2: I must have missed it.
- 2:29:04Speaker 7: I don't know.
- 2:29:04Speaker 2: Maybe I was flipping around. I heard it, and it
- 2:29:06Speaker 2: freaked me out. So I saw, for some reason, it
- 2:29:09Speaker 2: blew up yesterday on the interwebs.
- 2:29:12Speaker 11: And I saw it, and we were discussing it, and
- 2:29:15Speaker 11: we had a texter send in that the story Bear,
- 2:29:18Speaker 11: not Little Cub Bear, but Bear Bachmeier told, was he
- 2:29:23Speaker 11: was eating dinner with his shirt off one night, And
- 2:29:25Speaker 11: his dad is like, you're in bad shape.
- 2:29:26Speaker 2: Yeah, told me he was fat.
- 2:29:28Speaker 11: Yeah, and so the texter claimed RG3, who's kind of
- 2:29:32Speaker 11: a weird cat himself, took that and ran with it
- 2:29:36Speaker 11: and decided to create a viral moment that there are
- 2:29:38Speaker 11: four kids and two parents and they're just dining nude.
- 2:29:42Speaker 2: I can't, there's no way that's the case. There's no
- 2:29:44Speaker 2: way that's the case.
- 2:29:46Speaker 3: You've got all, like, college-age or older children, and they're
- 2:29:49Speaker 3: just sitting around naked together?
- 2:29:51Speaker 2: Three boys and one girl?
- 2:29:52Speaker 4: No.
- 2:29:53Speaker 11: Yeah, and mom and dad. I mean, things start to
- 2:29:57Speaker 11: sag as you get older. No one wants to see that.
- 2:29:59Speaker 4: No.
- 2:30:00Speaker 2: I'm the oldest of six, and I mean... Was this
- 2:30:03Speaker 2: something that happened in the Checketts' household?
- 2:30:05Speaker 11: No, I just was trying to draw a parallel between, like,
- 2:30:08Speaker 11: what would that be like?
- 2:30:09Speaker 2: Yeah, that was.
- 2:30:10Speaker 3: There's got to be some, like, has anyone asked Bear
- 2:30:13Speaker 3: about it yet? Has there been a rebuttal?
- 2:30:16Speaker 11: Hank, his older brother, sent out, like, a funny tweet. Like,
- 2:30:19Speaker 11: there was a highlight of one of the throws that
- 2:30:21Speaker 11: Bear made. He's like, we were discussing this over dinner.
- 2:30:23Speaker 2: The other night. Nice, Hank.
- 2:30:25Speaker 11: So I think he's having fun with it. But none
- 2:30:28Speaker 11: of it makes sense. Like, hey, how's your steak? Please
- 2:30:31Speaker 11: tuck that in. It's so weird.
- 2:30:35Speaker 2: I don't like it. I don't like it one bit.
- 2:30:36Speaker 2: But we need to get to the bottom of this.
- 2:30:40Speaker 11: Someone needs to ask Bear Bachmeier, do you guys really
- 2:30:44Speaker 11: dine nude as a family?
- 2:30:45Speaker 7: That's what I mean.
- 2:30:46Speaker 2: I need clarification. That's all I want. I just want
- 2:30:49Speaker 2: to know what's real.
- 2:30:50Speaker 3: Okay, so because we have become the champions of the
- 2:30:55Speaker 3: Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints here on ESPN
- 2:30:58Speaker 3: 700 with the... We're both firmly anti-Bleep the Mormons chant.
- 2:31:03Speaker 7: Same page.
- 2:31:04Speaker 4: And.
- 2:31:06Speaker 3: A lot of people took this as an opportunity online
- 2:31:09Speaker 3: when this was starting to go viral.
- 2:31:11Speaker 2: See, aren't the Mormons so weird? The Bachmeyers aren't. No,
- 2:31:14Speaker 2: they're not. They might be weird, but they're not Mormon. Yeah,
- 2:31:17Speaker 2: they're not LDS. Which, if.
- 2:31:24Speaker 3: You're a non-LDS family and you send all your kids
- 2:31:27Speaker 3: to BYU, maybe you're just already eccentric.
- 2:31:31Speaker 2: Look, I would like to be very clear about one thing.
- 2:31:34Speaker 2: I dine nude often.
- 2:31:36Speaker 4: Rose.
- 2:31:37Speaker 2: I live alone.
- 2:31:37Speaker 4: Okay.
- 2:31:38Speaker 2: No one's still gross. No, no, it's actually, it's lovely.
- 2:31:40Speaker 2: That's gross. You should try it. I'm not gonna, when
- 2:31:42Speaker 2: you're home alone, don't try with the kids. We get
- 2:31:45Speaker 2: in trouble.
- 2:31:46Speaker 3: We've all seen that episode of Seinfeld. There's good nude
- 2:31:49Speaker 3: and bad nude.
- 2:31:50Speaker 2: My dude is good. Is bad nude. No, it's good nude,
- 2:31:52Speaker 2: but I live alone.
- 2:31:54Speaker 11: It's just me in all of my glory with a
- 2:31:57Speaker 11: burrito flapping around. But if you're, if you're so, if
- 2:32:03Speaker 11: you're solo, it's fine. Or maybe you and your partner.
- 2:32:08Speaker 11: Have you ever dined nude with a partner? I guarantee
- 2:32:10Speaker 11: you have. I don't think I have.
- 2:32:11Speaker 2: No, you have. I saw the look on your face.
- 2:32:13Speaker 2: I don't think I have. What's her name?
- 2:32:14Speaker 3: What happens if you're eating a burrito?
- 2:32:19Speaker 2: I have a napkin where I... What if melted cheese
- 2:32:22Speaker 2: slips out of the burrito? Things are covered with napkins.
- 2:32:25Speaker 2: I'm not risking burning the thing that can't be burned.
- 2:32:29Speaker 2: Your burrito?
- 2:32:31Speaker 7: My mouth.
- 2:32:32Speaker 2: We're covered up. We're fine.
- 2:32:33Speaker 11: We're fine. where it needs to be covered up, but
- 2:32:35Speaker 11: like get out of the shower. You're feeling good. Grab
- 2:32:39Speaker 11: a sandwich, get in your skin suit and watch a game.
- 2:32:44Speaker 11: But the family dynamic is by far the strangest piece.
- 2:32:47Speaker 3: Of this completely disconcerting. And I think untrue. I have
- 2:32:51Speaker 3: to believe. Cause I look, I like watching bear Bachmeier
- 2:32:54Speaker 3: play football.
- 2:32:55Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 2:32:55Speaker 2: He's an awesome player.
- 2:32:57Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 2:32:57Speaker 3: I don't want that mental image to creep in anywhere
- 2:33:01Speaker 3: or anytime ever.
- 2:33:03Speaker 11: It already there's no way there's no escaping at this point.
- 2:33:06Speaker 11: What happens when grandma and grandpa come to the house?
- 2:33:08Speaker 3: That's don't, I did see there was a thread, I
- 2:33:12Speaker 3: believe on Cougar board where somebody jumped on and was
- 2:33:15Speaker 3: just like, if, if you get invited to the Bachmeier's
- 2:33:18Speaker 3: for dinner, are you accepting the invitation? And everyone was like, yes,
- 2:33:22Speaker 3: with bells on a hundred percent, very on brand.
- 2:33:27Speaker 11: Before I set you loose, um, I was listening to
- 2:33:32Speaker 11: one of the Big 12 pods that I found to
- 2:33:34Speaker 11: kind of get a feel for what it's going to
- 2:33:36Speaker 11: look like. Apparently, they're like Noah's Ark rain going on
- 2:33:40Speaker 11: in Ames. Like the rivers are overflowing. That's a grass stadium.
- 2:33:46Speaker 11: This could get a little hairy. I mean, initially when
- 2:33:50Speaker 11: the line went down, everyone's like, is Devin healthy? I
- 2:33:53Speaker 11: can report with no doubt that both Devin and Bert
- 2:33:57Speaker 11: are healthy.
- 2:33:58Speaker 2: He does have a cold. I think he'll be fine.
- 2:34:00Speaker 2: But it is.
- 2:34:01Speaker 11: Raining and wet with a grass field. And Iowa State,
- 2:34:05Speaker 11: 17th in the country right now in yards per carry allowed.
- 2:34:07Speaker 11: That run defense is pretty good. Level of concern for
- 2:34:12Speaker 11: this Saturday's game?
- 2:34:14Speaker 2: Minor.
- 2:34:15Speaker 3: I think Utah's a better team. I think that Iowa
- 2:34:19Speaker 3: State has a lot more deficiencies. Iowa State cannot throw
- 2:34:22Speaker 3: the ball. And I know everyone's just like, oh my gosh, if...
- 2:34:25Speaker 3: If it's a wet game, you're not throwing the ball anyway. Well,
- 2:34:28Speaker 3: when you actually do the breakdown of play-calling splits in
- 2:34:33Speaker 3: rainy games versus in dry games, it's not a significant
- 2:34:36Speaker 3: variation from the norm. What does happen is maybe one
- 2:34:41Speaker 3: or two more deflected balls, one or two more balls
- 2:34:43Speaker 3: that slips out of your hands, more drops in rainy games.
- 2:34:46Speaker 3: It's not like the offensive coordinators stop throwing the football.
- 2:34:49Speaker 2: You can't.
- 2:34:50Speaker 3: Otherwise, everyone just stacks the box and you play 1930s football.
- 2:34:53Speaker 4: Right.
- 2:34:55Speaker 3: If you have to do that, Utah should still win
- 2:34:59Speaker 3: that game.
- 2:35:03Speaker 2: You don't like too many variables.
- 2:35:04Speaker 3: I'm more concerned about it being their first road game
- 2:35:07Speaker 3: than I am concerned about it being rainy.
- 2:35:10Speaker 2: These guys know how to play in the rain. These
- 2:35:12Speaker 2: guys know how to coach in the rain.
- 2:35:13Speaker 3: What I'm worried about is you do have a bunch
- 2:35:16Speaker 3: of new starters on this team, a bunch of new
- 2:35:19Speaker 3: full-time starters on this team, even if they're guys who
- 2:35:21Speaker 3: have played or been spot starters in the past, that
- 2:35:24Speaker 3: have to go about the rhythm of a road game
- 2:35:27Speaker 3: and they have to do it a little bit differently.
- 2:35:29Speaker 3: It is very comfortable at Rice Eccles stadium, right? Communication
- 2:35:33Speaker 3: along a new offensive line in a loud stadium with
- 2:35:36Speaker 3: rain spattering on your helmet and a crowd of angry
- 2:35:39Speaker 3: Iowans is going to be a little bit more difficult.
- 2:35:41Speaker 3: I'm more worried about that than I am about any
- 2:35:43Speaker 3: kind of weather.
- 2:35:44Speaker 4: Iowans.
- 2:35:45Speaker 2: Is that what we call them?
- 2:35:46Speaker 4: Yeah. Okay.
- 2:35:47Speaker 2: My parents are both Iowans.
- 2:35:48Speaker 7: Okay.
- 2:35:49Speaker 11: You have experience in middle America that I simply do not.
- 2:35:52Speaker 2: I have been to Iowa once. A hundred times. Have
- 2:35:55Speaker 2: you been to Ames? I've only been to Ames one time.
- 2:35:58Speaker 7: Okay.
- 2:35:58Speaker 2: It's not near Dubuque where my parents are from.
- 2:36:02Speaker 11: I've heard a lot of people draw parallels between game
- 2:36:04Speaker 11: day vibes with Rice-Eckel Stadium and Jack Trice.
- 2:36:07Speaker 2: About the same size, right? Similar size.
- 2:36:13Speaker 3: I don't think it has the reputation as nearly as
- 2:36:16Speaker 3: intimidating of a nighttime environment, at least.
- 2:36:18Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 2:36:19Speaker 2: That grass you're talking about, by the way?
- 2:36:21Speaker 3: Was at one point named the nicest grass field in
- 2:36:24Speaker 3: all of college football.
- 2:36:27Speaker 2: They won that award.
- 2:36:27Speaker 3: It's like all the way back in 2016 or something.
- 2:36:30Speaker 3: But still, something Iowans would be very proud of. They're
- 2:36:34Speaker 3: a very agricultural community.
- 2:36:35Speaker 2: And very kind people. The nicest people in our country
- 2:36:38Speaker 2: live in the Midwest. And Utah. Depends on the county.
- 2:36:44Speaker 4: Got him.
- 2:36:45Speaker 3: Watch out for bears out there, and honestly, if Spence
- 2:36:49Speaker 3: is going to keep talking about this Bachmeier dinner thing,
- 2:36:51Speaker 3: I don't know if I can endorse you listening to
- 2:36:53Speaker 3: the drive, so proceed with caution.
- 2:36:56Speaker 2: We'll do the Sean O'Connell show again tomorrow on ESPN
- 2:36:58Speaker 2: 700 and 92.1 FM.
