- 1:02Speaker 2: you know who could have used a Grand Slam yesterday
- 1:05Speaker 2: and they still would have lost your Seattle Mariners because
- 1:08Speaker 2: they lost eight to three in route to getting swept
- 1:12Speaker 2: over the San Diego Padres over the weekend. Man, there's
- 1:17Speaker 2: a lot going on with this baseball team right now.
- 1:19Speaker 2: But I want to bring in Christopher Kidd. Christopher, how
- 1:22Speaker 2: are you?
- 1:22Speaker 1: Is going on? Anderson Hurst? How are you? I am good, man,
- 1:26Speaker 1: I am good? How are you?
- 1:27Speaker 3: My manners are not going as well? So you're a
- 1:29Speaker 3: little sour. Yeah, a lot of fans are as well.
- 1:32Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:32Speaker 2: For some of us to do a daily postgame show,
- 1:35Speaker 2: these kind of stretches are tough because it's like last night,
- 1:37Speaker 2: I'm like, what do I even say? Usually there's after
- 1:40Speaker 2: the first loss, you had a lot of analysis able
- 1:43Speaker 2: to explain it. After that second loss. How much of
- 1:46Speaker 2: that first loss did you try not to regurgitate exactly?
- 1:49Speaker 2: When you get to that third loss, what could you
- 1:51Speaker 2: have possibly have changed? Because some of the same issues
- 1:55Speaker 2: they've had were throughout the series.
- 1:57Speaker 1: Well, thankfully for the Mariners.
- 1:58Speaker 2: When they lose this year, it's due to to like
- 2:00Speaker 2: one moment in the game or like a couple frustrating things.
- 2:04Speaker 2: It's like, man, if you could have just done this differently,
- 2:06Speaker 2: like you would have gone on a run, you would
- 2:08Speaker 2: have won this series. But that wasn't the case over
- 2:11Speaker 2: the weekend now, and especially wasn't the case last night
- 2:14Speaker 2: against the Padres, like you lost eight to three. You
- 2:16Speaker 2: didn't hit, you couldn't pitch. There are a couple defensive errors.
- 2:20Speaker 2: It was cool a guy made his debut in Cole
- 2:22Speaker 2: t Emerson, and we could talk about that obviously, but yeah,
- 2:24Speaker 2: last night was just like you just lost to a
- 2:26Speaker 2: better baseball team. And that's the kind of scope. And
- 2:29Speaker 2: I mentioned this to you before we went on the
- 2:31Speaker 2: show today. That's the kind of scope I'm viewing all
- 2:34Speaker 2: of this. Everyone tries to paint the picture of all
- 2:37Speaker 2: they're just what a game and a half out of
- 2:38Speaker 2: first place right now. I don't know if that's change,
- 2:41Speaker 2: but it's not very much. They're a game, sorry, two
- 2:45Speaker 2: games out of first place. The Rangers are now ahead
- 2:47Speaker 2: of you in your third place in the Aos. But
- 2:49Speaker 2: you know, the Mariners could easily still win this division.
- 2:52Speaker 2: They could easily still make the playoffs. But that's not
- 2:55Speaker 2: kind of the expectations I set for this team going
- 2:57Speaker 2: into this year. The expectations I set this team was
- 3:00Speaker 2: to go and be a World Series contender, right and
- 3:04Speaker 2: you kind of are able to, you know, tread water
- 3:08Speaker 2: during the first month plus of the season. We're almost
- 3:11Speaker 2: two months into the season now, and it just seems
- 3:15Speaker 2: like they're still not taking that next step like we
- 3:20Speaker 2: expected them to do. And I think the biggest damning
- 3:23Speaker 2: evidence that they're not in that World Series conversation right
- 3:27Speaker 2: now is that you went up against a team that
- 3:31Speaker 2: is in that World Series conversation right now in the
- 3:33Speaker 2: San Diego Padres. I mean, they have all the excuses
- 3:37Speaker 2: in the world to not be twenty eight and eighteen
- 3:39Speaker 2: right now, but they are. They're twenty eight and eighteen
- 3:41Speaker 2: with their two best hitters haven't done anything this year
- 3:44Speaker 2: and Manny Machadaw and Fernando Tatis Junior. That is an excuse.
- 3:48Speaker 2: That is an excuse to not have your best record.
- 3:50Speaker 2: The Mariners, on the other hand, like, yes, cal Rawley's
- 3:53Speaker 2: been bad and injured and or whatever you want to
- 3:56Speaker 2: kind of put under his name. But the rest of
- 3:59Speaker 2: the line minus the left handed pitching situation, We'll get
- 4:03Speaker 2: to that in a second, but the rest of the
- 4:05Speaker 2: lineup has been pretty dang productive. You look at players
- 4:09Speaker 2: like Luke Rayley, dom Can Zone, Cole Young, Julia Rodriguez,
- 4:12Speaker 2: Randy Rose, Arena, Josh Naylor. On the whole on the
- 4:16Speaker 2: season has been a little underwhelming. But that's mostly due
- 4:19Speaker 2: to his really cold stretch to start the season, and
- 4:23Speaker 2: he's been coming on as of late. So I think
- 4:27Speaker 2: if you look at the lineup, the people that are
- 4:29Speaker 2: playing every day, you don't see a lot of guys
- 4:32Speaker 2: that are underperforming.
- 4:34Speaker 1: On the pitching staff.
- 4:35Speaker 2: I've been happy with Emerson Hancock, I've been happy with
- 4:37Speaker 2: George Kirby minuses blow up yesterday. I've been happy with
- 4:41Speaker 2: Brian wu as well. But Logan Gilbert I expect more
- 4:45Speaker 2: from but it's not like he's blowing up. And we
- 4:47Speaker 2: all we've always talked about Luis Castillo as well. But
- 4:50Speaker 2: you look at these performances across the board and it's like,
- 4:53Speaker 2: how are the Mariners in this position? And it's because
- 4:55Speaker 2: they're just not playing good baseball. They're they're not taking
- 4:58Speaker 2: good team at bats, they're not playing good defense. And
- 5:02Speaker 2: one other aspects I didn't even throw in there was
- 5:04Speaker 2: the bullpen, and I think the bullpen's actually been one
- 5:06Speaker 2: of the strengths of this team in the early portion
- 5:08Speaker 2: of the season. There's a lot of good things with
- 5:10Speaker 2: this Mariners team, but you know when you watch the
- 5:13Speaker 2: games and.
- 5:14Speaker 1: The eye test just doesn't pass. Christopher Kidd do you agree.
- 5:18Speaker 3: I agree that the eye test it is not good.
- 5:23Speaker 3: And we briefly wrapped about their home record, yeah, which
- 5:28Speaker 3: is also a little concerning because you look at a
- 5:31Speaker 3: team that's ahead of them by a game two games,
- 5:33Speaker 3: and that would be the Texas Rangers, and you know
- 5:35Speaker 3: what their record at home is.
- 5:37Speaker 1: It's positive. Now, it's not the biggest deal.
- 5:39Speaker 3: It's not as if they're like undefeated, just some jog
- 5:42Speaker 3: or not at the crib. But at the same time,
- 5:44Speaker 3: this is a team that everyone talks about World Series aspirations,
- 5:48Speaker 3: and you're not getting it done in front of the
- 5:50Speaker 3: people that are supporting you to do so that is
- 5:53Speaker 3: my concern. And I don't know if it's gonna just
- 5:56Speaker 3: happen overnight where they just become this good baseball team
- 5:59Speaker 3: at home, right And now the injuries are starting to
- 6:02Speaker 3: pile up now obviously with JP Crawford, sounds like it's
- 6:06Speaker 3: day to day and he could be playing today for
- 6:08Speaker 3: all we know. So with that being said, you know, Donovan,
- 6:11Speaker 3: he's out. So it's not a great sign for this team.
- 6:15Speaker 3: And I think perhaps there is a tier of fans
- 6:18Speaker 3: that are worried, and then there's the Andersons and fans
- 6:21Speaker 3: that are just like, I'm.
- 6:22Speaker 1: Not too worried. It's just not good enough though, but
- 6:24Speaker 1: it is not good enough.
- 6:25Speaker 3: One of the things that is still crazy to me
- 6:29Speaker 3: is how the offense disappears just so often. Seattle continues
- 6:33Speaker 3: to struggle at the plate consistently. Strikeouts are our favorite
- 6:38Speaker 3: thing to talk about. You got this guy named Lucas giallat.
- 6:43Speaker 1: Jaliedo.
- 6:43Speaker 3: They managed just if I'm not mistaken, one hit in
- 6:47Speaker 3: five innings.
- 6:48Speaker 1: There's the whole game. They only got one hit the
- 6:49Speaker 1: entire game.
- 6:50Speaker 3: Excuse me. My point is they can't have those type
- 6:55Speaker 3: of lapses. Now, I get it. This is a Padre's
- 6:59Speaker 3: team that that is a contender. They're really good, so
- 7:02Speaker 3: it's not terrible. But when you look at the Mariners
- 7:06Speaker 3: and you're like, oh, we should be there too. You actually,
- 7:09Speaker 3: you would think you would get a win in this series,
- 7:12Speaker 3: just a win? Would that be too much to ask for?
- 7:15Speaker 3: And now you're owing six against these guys. You got
- 7:17Speaker 3: swept twice, so that's kind of that's a bad taste
- 7:21Speaker 3: in your mouth, and you're praying, you know what, I
- 7:22Speaker 3: want to see these guys in the fall. In September
- 7:24Speaker 3: when there's a chance to move on in the postseason,
- 7:27Speaker 3: and I think that's kind of their mindset, like learn
- 7:30Speaker 3: from this. But I do think that the bullpen rotation,
- 7:34Speaker 3: maybe they're carrying too much.
- 7:35Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 7:36Speaker 3: I think you look at George Kirby and Logan Gilbert
- 7:40Speaker 3: and how they pitched pretty well through this series. But
- 7:43Speaker 3: when good starts do not translate into wins, that is
- 7:47Speaker 3: a that's concerning, and especially through the long haul. And then,
- 7:51Speaker 3: as I mentioned that home field stuff, that's good teams
- 7:54Speaker 3: I think dominated at home and the Mariners, I know
- 7:57Speaker 3: they're a good team because they have the pieces of
- 7:59Speaker 3: the puzzle. Yeah, but they're not putting it on the field.
- 8:02Speaker 3: And to your point of the eye tests, they're not
- 8:04Speaker 3: passing the eye test on paper. They're phenomenal, yeah, And
- 8:07Speaker 3: it's they have the talent. It's not that you know,
- 8:10Speaker 3: I don't I see a giant talent gap between them
- 8:12Speaker 3: and the Padres, right, you know, especially at the top
- 8:16Speaker 3: of the lineup and the top of the pitching rotation
- 8:20Speaker 3: and the bullpen. Probably than Podres have the best bullpen
- 8:22Speaker 3: in baseball, but I think the Mariners are up there
- 8:24Speaker 3: as well.
- 8:26Speaker 1: But it's it's just they're.
- 8:28Speaker 2: Not playing good baseball, and I don't know how much
- 8:31Speaker 2: of it is manager related. I struggle to I struggle
- 8:35Speaker 2: to put everything on the manager because I think of
- 8:38Speaker 2: all the coaches in any sport, Baseball has the The
- 8:44Speaker 2: baseball manager has the least effect on the outcome as
- 8:48Speaker 2: any head coach in any sport. I think the NFL
- 8:50Speaker 2: head coach has a more positive effect.
- 8:53Speaker 3: Let me ask you this, Yeah, should Dan Wilson stop
- 8:56Speaker 3: going to pinch hinters in these big opportunities? Be a
- 9:00Speaker 3: Is that a fair discussion? You're like, hey man, it's
- 9:04Speaker 3: the eighth inning? Yeah, why are you calling in la
- 9:07Speaker 3: la la la la.
- 9:08Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 9:08Speaker 3: Like Rod Reschneider's exactly perfect example, I'm not sure. I'm
- 9:14Speaker 3: sure the fans don't agree. Not to mention, have the
- 9:17Speaker 3: results been good?
- 9:19Speaker 1: No? No, I have not. The numbers speak for themselves.
- 9:22Speaker 1: The Mariners pitch hitters.
- 9:23Speaker 3: Let's see fifty one plate appearances, seventh modes in MLB,
- 9:28Speaker 3: five eighty ops, ninth worst in baseball.
- 9:31Speaker 2: So they're doing it the fifth most out of any team,
- 9:35Speaker 2: and their results are the ninth worst out of any team.
- 9:39Speaker 2: So not only are you not getting the results that
- 9:43Speaker 2: you want, you're doing it more often, which means it's
- 9:45Speaker 2: affecting your team as much.
- 9:48Speaker 1: Let's look at the Friday game, right Manners lose.
- 9:50Speaker 3: What was the scored two? I think it was three
- 9:53Speaker 3: to two, okay. I think they use three pitch hinters,
- 9:57Speaker 3: pitch pinch hitters. That's a fun word though, I know
- 10:01Speaker 3: if I'm not mistake two zero. Sorry it was Friday,
- 10:03Speaker 3: My bad. Two zero okay, So they use three pinch hitters.
- 10:05Speaker 3: Result a walk, no hits, five played appearances. Yeah, so
- 10:10Speaker 3: what do you What's what was the purpose there?
- 10:12Speaker 2: So the three things you said there, The issue isn't
- 10:16Speaker 2: the fact that they didn't get any hits. Isn't the
- 10:19Speaker 2: fact that they just got one walk. It's the fact
- 10:21Speaker 2: that they had five played appearances. There, you go, That
- 10:23Speaker 2: is the hugest issue. And I talked about this on
- 10:27Speaker 2: Friday when I filled in for Ian for Ness as
- 10:29Speaker 2: well with Jess, and to me, the issue is not
- 10:35Speaker 2: and we saw this over the weekend as well, so
- 10:37Speaker 2: we can talk about it again. The issue is not
- 10:40Speaker 2: that you're using pinch hitters, period, like every team does
- 10:43Speaker 2: it right, and you have players like Luke Rayley and
- 10:46Speaker 2: doncan Zone that are less effective versus left handed pitchers.
- 10:50Speaker 2: Right The issue though, is the fact that you're doing
- 10:54Speaker 2: it so a early in the game. So I think
- 10:58Speaker 2: it was actually in the first game of the series
- 11:03Speaker 2: where it was the top of the seventh inning. You
- 11:06Speaker 2: were down to zero still at this point, Connor, and
- 11:10Speaker 2: it's the top of the inning and no one on base,
- 11:13Speaker 2: nobody out.
- 11:14Speaker 1: It's the beginning and so long Connor Joe.
- 11:16Speaker 2: Well, yeah, like pinch hit Luke Raley, who's one of
- 11:19Speaker 2: your honest hitters right now to bring in Connor Joe.
- 11:22Speaker 2: Now that in a vacuum is not I don't think
- 11:26Speaker 2: it's a terrible move, especially if you're in a late
- 11:28Speaker 2: game situation where you have guys on base and you
- 11:31Speaker 2: have a chance to tire or win the game. I
- 11:33Speaker 2: would rather the guy that is in his career better
- 11:36Speaker 2: against left handed pitching than than the other guy. So
- 11:39Speaker 2: Connor Joe in his career is better against left handed
- 11:41Speaker 2: pitching than Luke Raley is. But the issue with that
- 11:45Speaker 2: is that it was the top of the seventh inning.
- 11:46Speaker 2: You are guaranteeing and at bat again, not just that
- 11:49Speaker 2: first time you're pinch hitting for him, but again later
- 11:52Speaker 2: in the game because you're taking him out so early,
- 11:56Speaker 2: and what exactly what we expected happened, where you know,
- 12:03Speaker 2: Connor Jo actually gets the walk, but then later in
- 12:06Speaker 2: the game he's facing Mason Miller, the best closer in
- 12:09Speaker 2: baseball with like a forty strike up percentage, and it's alrighty,
- 12:13Speaker 2: So this is where you would love to have Luke Rayley.
- 12:16Speaker 2: So that's the issue with me. It's not the fact
- 12:19Speaker 2: that you're doing it. It's the fact that man opposing
- 12:22Speaker 2: managers to Dan Wilson can know that it's so easy
- 12:26Speaker 2: to get the Mariner's best platoon hitters and Luke Rayley
- 12:30Speaker 2: and Dom Canzone are platoon hitters to get them out
- 12:33Speaker 2: of the game early in the game so you can't
- 12:35Speaker 2: use them again if you just go to an left
- 12:37Speaker 2: handed reliever right after your starter. So it just it
- 12:42Speaker 2: just seems like everyone else is playing chess while the
- 12:45Speaker 2: Mariners are playing checkers right now.
- 12:46Speaker 1: When it comes to this, i'd.
- 12:48Speaker 3: Also and I eventually, at some point this becomes that
- 12:51Speaker 3: the process is just failing. Yeah, and you know what's
- 12:53Speaker 3: going to happen. Dan Wilson's going to get the blame
- 12:56Speaker 3: either way.
- 12:57Speaker 1: Well, and I struggle to put it all on Dan.
- 12:59Speaker 2: And I've been someone who's been critical Dan Wilson as
- 13:01Speaker 2: much as anyone. Even last year when they made their run.
- 13:04Speaker 2: I wasn't really thrilled with some of the managing decisions.
- 13:07Speaker 2: But it's hard to do that because, like I said,
- 13:11Speaker 2: that process that we just talked about is on him.
- 13:14Speaker 1: That's not good.
- 13:14Speaker 2: But we wouldn't even be having this discussion if the
- 13:17Speaker 2: guys that can hit left handed pitching actually hit left
- 13:19Speaker 2: handed pitching.
- 13:20Speaker 1: And that's not on him.
- 13:21Speaker 2: Like Rob Rathschneider and Connor Joe are on this team
- 13:24Speaker 2: for one flippant reason, and.
- 13:25Speaker 1: It's to hit left hand picking.
- 13:27Speaker 3: Rob is making six point two million to do one thing.
- 13:31Speaker 3: High strakeout rate, not good, not delivering in leverage moments,
- 13:34Speaker 3: and then it's starting. If I'm not I think it's
- 13:37Speaker 3: starting to look like a field experiment in my opinion,
- 13:39Speaker 3: I agree. So with all that being said, the Royal problem, Sure,
- 13:43Speaker 3: to your point, it might not be a Dan Wilson.
- 13:45Speaker 3: It could be maybe the roster construction. Yeah, and I
- 13:49Speaker 3: know for off seasons and pawn off seasons. Get this,
- 13:52Speaker 3: get this and that this is a bat. Yeah, and
- 13:54Speaker 3: here you are now with players that are banged up.
- 13:57Speaker 3: Kyle Rowley, he's he's out Donovan, He's gonna be out
- 14:01Speaker 3: update soon for JP Crawford, and you're looking for sparks,
- 14:06Speaker 3: and right now is not a good time to be
- 14:08Speaker 3: in a situation where you're looking for sparks, because we
- 14:12Speaker 3: all believe that the Mayors are the best team in
- 14:14Speaker 3: this division. At the same time, when you're not playing
- 14:17Speaker 3: at your best and you don't have your best players,
- 14:19Speaker 3: it could easily become a catch up moment. And how
- 14:22Speaker 3: far are you willing to fall down that hole before
- 14:24Speaker 3: you look up and it's June eighteenth and you are
- 14:27Speaker 3: X amount of games out of first place, and you
- 14:29Speaker 3: stink at home and you're okay on the road. That
- 14:32Speaker 3: is my concern at this point in time. And it's
- 14:35Speaker 3: I would raise the yellow flag. I'm staying with yellow.
- 14:38Speaker 3: It's been yellow since the season started. He's going to
- 14:40Speaker 3: stay there because I do believe the pitching is still
- 14:43Speaker 3: really good and they can make away, But I don't
- 14:46Speaker 3: know how much longer they can make away, sure with
- 14:49Speaker 3: decisions like this happening and the roster not being constructed
- 14:52Speaker 3: for when things go south.
- 14:54Speaker 2: Yeah, And it's pretty interesting because on Saturday, so that
- 14:57Speaker 2: the situation we just described on frit it was obviously
- 15:03Speaker 2: a Dan Wilson decision. Saturday, Dan Wilson gets tossed early
- 15:06Speaker 2: in the game for the second time in his career.
- 15:08Speaker 2: By the way, mar though, I mean, yeah, he's trying
- 15:10Speaker 2: to get his guys fired up. I like it, But
- 15:13Speaker 2: then you see a different, different strategy. So I'm I'm
- 15:20Speaker 2: curious as to text line, what you guys think.
- 15:23Speaker 1: Do you think?
- 15:23Speaker 2: Because Dan Wilson got tossed, and then when the Potters
- 15:27Speaker 2: put in a left handed pitcher for three straight left
- 15:29Speaker 2: handed batters, the acting head coach Many act or the
- 15:32Speaker 2: acting manager Manny Acta, decided to stick with Luke Rayley,
- 15:36Speaker 2: decided to stick with dom Canzone against the left handed pitcher.
- 15:39Speaker 2: Now you didn't get any different results, right, And again
- 15:43Speaker 2: I'm not even saying that I think Luke Rayley and
- 15:45Speaker 2: Dom Canzone can be good versus left handed pitching, Like
- 15:49Speaker 2: I don't think they can. Dom Canzone maybe a little
- 15:51Speaker 2: bit more so. But Luke Rayley just in his career
- 15:53Speaker 2: has shown he cannot hit left handed pitching, and he's
- 15:56Speaker 2: talked about it before that it's just he doesn't even
- 15:58Speaker 2: practice it anymore because he doesn't ever get used in
- 16:00Speaker 2: that situation. So I'm not even saying that's the case,
- 16:05Speaker 2: but leave him in the game. So it kind of
- 16:07Speaker 2: forces the hand of the other manager to be like, crap,
- 16:09Speaker 2: maybe they won't switch out their best hitters and we're
- 16:12Speaker 2: just burning left handed pitchers early in the game where
- 16:15Speaker 2: we'd rather have them later in the game. And then
- 16:17Speaker 2: you're back on the attack instead of always just you know,
- 16:20Speaker 2: responding to what other teams are doing. But overall, I
- 16:23Speaker 2: think this platoon situation, it'll work itself out. I think
- 16:26Speaker 2: Dom Canzone more more likely than not, becomes an everyday
- 16:29Speaker 2: player and you'll probably have one less platoon situation in
- 16:33Speaker 2: the in the lineup. But the bigger issue for me
- 16:37Speaker 2: is is there injuries. I mean, that's it's pretty easy
- 16:40Speaker 2: to say when Brendan, Donovan, cal Rawly and JP Crawford
- 16:44Speaker 2: at the end of yesterday's game are out of the lineup.
- 16:47Speaker 2: That's those are three guys that you expected to be
- 16:49Speaker 2: contributing every single day that are no longer contributing every
- 16:52Speaker 2: single day. And I wanted to give a quick shout
- 16:54Speaker 2: out to Cole t Emerson for making his debut yesterday.
- 16:56Speaker 2: Everyone's been excited about him. I also wonder that how
- 17:00Speaker 2: much of him getting called up was because Brendan Donovan
- 17:04Speaker 2: got injured, and if this was less of a you're
- 17:08Speaker 2: ready situation and more of a hey, we need a
- 17:12Speaker 2: guy to come play every day because Brendan Donovan was
- 17:14Speaker 2: playing every day for US and his hernia that he
- 17:16Speaker 2: had and hernia surgery that he had in the off
- 17:19Speaker 2: season not healing like we expected it too. So you know,
- 17:23Speaker 2: you want cold Emerson when he does get called up
- 17:25Speaker 2: to play every day, so might as well do it now.
- 17:27Speaker 2: But it's he was starting to hit a little bit more,
- 17:30Speaker 2: but he wasn't like tearing the cover off the base
- 17:31Speaker 2: ball or anything like that. So I don't know there
- 17:34Speaker 2: are any I actually thought he had a pretty good
- 17:36Speaker 2: game last night. He gets a walk, hits two balls hard.
- 17:39Speaker 2: I know it doesn't get a hit, but you know,
- 17:42Speaker 2: the process will come and all that stuff. He played
- 17:44Speaker 2: third base, though, which is another thing. If JP Crawford
- 17:47Speaker 2: goes down, I expect them to play short But the
- 17:50Speaker 2: third base situation with him, that's a whole other thing,
- 17:53Speaker 2: because I think he needs to be playing short stop
- 17:55Speaker 2: because he's going to be your every day shortstop for
- 17:56Speaker 2: the years to come. So lots to discuss regards arning
- 18:00Speaker 2: the Seattle Marion Arrows. There's a lot of topics, there's
- 18:03Speaker 2: a lot of reasons why they're in this funk right now.
- 18:07Speaker 2: But the biggest thing, as I said at the top
- 18:08Speaker 2: of the show, for me, is that you're still well
- 18:12Speaker 2: within striking distance of making the playoffs. You're still well
- 18:15Speaker 2: within striking distance of winning your division. That's not the
- 18:17Speaker 2: issue here. The issue is that we expected this to
- 18:19Speaker 2: be a World Series contending team, and you faced another
- 18:21Speaker 2: World Series contending team last or over the weekend, and
- 18:24Speaker 2: you looked far inferior, and you have all season that's
- 18:28Speaker 2: zero to six now against the Padres. So yeah, we'll
- 18:32Speaker 2: talk about a little bit later in the show. I'm
- 18:33Speaker 2: excited to talk to Chuck Powell. I'm gonna bring him on.
- 18:36Speaker 2: I heard his discussion regarding Dan Wilson in the nine
- 18:39Speaker 2: o'clock hour, and I want to ask him a couple
- 18:41Speaker 2: questions regarding that. I want to pick his brain. For
- 18:43Speaker 2: those who don't know, we do our Stove podcast, which
- 18:46Speaker 2: is normally the off season podcast, but we decided to
- 18:48Speaker 2: start doing it during the regular season as well. Every
- 18:51Speaker 2: couple of weeks Stove fifteen and Stove thirty. You can
- 18:53Speaker 2: find it on those podcast pages on the iHeartMedia or
- 18:57Speaker 2: iHeartRadio app. Excuse me, but Christopher Kidd, when we come back,
- 19:02Speaker 2: I'm gonna ask you, as someone who's following the NBA
- 19:06Speaker 2: playoffs extremely closely, and I have not, and I'm the
- 19:10Speaker 2: one who's been following the NHL playoffs extremely closely, let's
- 19:14Speaker 2: update each other on where we're at at this point
- 19:17Speaker 2: in the two playoff races.
- 19:18Speaker 3: One question for you before we go Tampa Bay Rays?
- 19:23Speaker 3: Is that what you expected the Mariners speak, because that's
- 19:25Speaker 3: what I thought, Yes, in terms of record, Yeah, and
- 19:27Speaker 3: how they're playing and how they're looking, that's what I envisioned.
- 19:30Speaker 3: The Rays are thirty and fifteen. Yep, they're a really
- 19:33Speaker 3: good base. That would be nice if the Mariners were
- 19:35Speaker 3: that in their AO West Division. But yeah, you know what,
- 19:38Speaker 3: and they have better talent than the Rays. That's the
- 19:40Speaker 3: thing exactly. That would be my next point. Yeah, the
- 19:42Speaker 3: talent is like superior. No discredit to the rais. They
- 19:46Speaker 3: have a good roster. But when you look at paper
- 19:48Speaker 3: to paper, you're like, damn, how are the Mariners not that?
- 19:52Speaker 3: And it's the little things that we kind of briefly
- 19:54Speaker 3: discussed here in this opening segment. So text line, I'm
- 19:58Speaker 3: sure you're everything we're talking about. Yeah, how can we
- 20:02Speaker 3: not talk about the Mariners after they just got swept
- 20:04Speaker 3: by a pretty decent team.
- 20:05Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, it's the main discussion in Seattle sports
- 20:08Speaker 2: over the weekend right now. But coming up next, we're
- 20:09Speaker 2: gonna talk some playoffs that neither Seattle Sports, no Seattle
- 20:14Speaker 2: Sports teams are in. It's the NHL playoffs and it
- 20:16Speaker 2: is the NBA playoffs. So Chris is gonna update me
- 20:20Speaker 2: on what's going on in the NBA. I'm gonna update
- 20:21Speaker 2: Chris and what's going on in the NHL all coming
- 20:23Speaker 2: up next on Sports Radio ninety three point three KJARFM.
- 20:27Speaker 2: Interest level with the NBA and probably during the mid
- 20:30Speaker 2: twenty tens, during the Lebron Steph years, that's when I
- 20:33Speaker 2: was watching every single series, every single game consistently. But
- 20:37Speaker 2: ever since the Kraken got a hockey team, and especially
- 20:39Speaker 2: ever since the Kraken went to the playoffs themselves, I've
- 20:43Speaker 2: kind of shifted my gears towards the NHL playoffs a
- 20:46Speaker 2: little bit more and focused more on those series. Having
- 20:50Speaker 2: a lot of fun watching this year's I think the
- 20:53Speaker 2: Western Conference Finals is gonna be a ton of fun.
- 20:55Speaker 2: But I want to get a quick update from Christopher
- 20:58Speaker 2: Kidd as someone who hasn't watched my who hasn't watched
- 21:02Speaker 2: much of the NBA playoffs this year. Uh, you know,
- 21:05Speaker 2: tell me what's going on. You're now all set in
- 21:07Speaker 2: the conference finals. Well you got okac.
- 21:10Speaker 3: I know Sonic fans are rolling their eyes, turning their
- 21:14Speaker 3: just doing everything that.
- 21:16Speaker 1: Yeah, no one's happy about that.
- 21:17Speaker 3: They haven't lost a game yet, Chris. This is a
- 21:20Speaker 3: powerhouse in the West. This team is loaded one through thirteen.
- 21:26Speaker 3: They believe in each other, They have a great roster,
- 21:29Speaker 3: great coaching, and unfortunately it's not the Sonics, but they
- 21:34Speaker 3: also have a foe with a seven foot four unicorn
- 21:38Speaker 3: and women Yama that can do any and everything. So
- 21:40Speaker 3: you got two and dispersed team. By the way, is
- 21:44Speaker 3: they're a young team and they may be ahead of schedule,
- 21:49Speaker 3: but they don't.
- 21:49Speaker 1: They don't.
- 21:50Speaker 3: They don't see it that way, kind of like the Seahawks, right,
- 21:52Speaker 3: maybe one that they'll probably win twelve games last season.
- 21:55Speaker 1: Maybe that's a that's a great start. It's a great start.
- 21:57Speaker 3: No one thought they would be what they were, And
- 21:59Speaker 3: if you did, I need to find the tape of
- 22:01Speaker 3: you saying so, because I didn't see them winning a
- 22:03Speaker 3: super Bowl.
- 22:03Speaker 1: I thought the Seahawks would.
- 22:05Speaker 3: Win twelve eleven twelve games, be a real playoff contender,
- 22:09Speaker 3: probably losing division round.
- 22:10Speaker 2: Sure, boy was, and I thought people like, if you
- 22:13Speaker 2: were to ask people that going into the Seahawks season
- 22:16Speaker 2: last year, people would have said, that's a success.
- 22:17Speaker 3: Yes, yes, not to discredit from anything else that they did,
- 22:21Speaker 3: but that's just looking at it, my McDonald.
- 22:23Speaker 1: You know, second year, can you really do something like
- 22:25Speaker 1: a super Bowl win a playoff game?
- 22:27Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 22:27Speaker 1: Right, that's like you don't.
- 22:28Speaker 3: Want to put pressure on this guy. And that's kind
- 22:30Speaker 3: of what the Spurs are right now. They're built around women.
- 22:33Speaker 3: Yama they the alien is just what a great nickname
- 22:38Speaker 3: for him.
- 22:38Speaker 2: I mean, obviously he is. You think he's gonna win.
- 22:40Speaker 2: Oh he didn't win MVPs. It was it was women
- 22:44Speaker 2: on a second in the vote.
- 22:45Speaker 3: I want to say it was joke, joker, but when
- 22:48Speaker 3: Miyama was on the list, Yeah, he's an MVP candidate.
- 22:51Speaker 3: He is going He's going to win that eventually because
- 22:55Speaker 3: what he brings to the game is extraordinary. Ye Now,
- 22:58Speaker 3: I know he's seven to four, So that helps a lot.
- 23:00Speaker 3: But he can still do things that guys my height
- 23:03Speaker 3: are doing, which is handle the ball, gets the basket. Yeah,
- 23:06Speaker 3: he's doing You don't see seven four guys with his
- 23:09Speaker 3: skill set. Usually they just back to the basket shooting
- 23:12Speaker 3: shots ten feet from the rim.
- 23:14Speaker 2: He's from thirty out. What's the talent around him? Like,
- 23:17Speaker 2: I know obviously he's like the oh my piece, but like,
- 23:20Speaker 2: are they as deep as the thunder art?
- 23:22Speaker 1: Because I know that the thunder.
- 23:23Speaker 3: Strength, I don't know if they're the deepest. I don't, Okay,
- 23:25Speaker 3: So that's why I said ahead of schedule. Because they're
- 23:27Speaker 3: not as deep, You're gonna need some guys that are
- 23:30Speaker 3: probably the X factors to take it to another level.
- 23:33Speaker 1: Who are those?
- 23:34Speaker 3: So it's a great question, I would saycl no, I, Well, yeah,
- 23:40Speaker 3: he's a part of that.
- 23:41Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 23:41Speaker 3: But when I look at Okay sees bench, they have
- 23:45Speaker 3: guys like Isaiah Joe that comes in and he is
- 23:50Speaker 3: basically a firecracker. He's defense, he can knock down the three,
- 23:55Speaker 3: he can get to the basket, he can create for others, right,
- 23:58Speaker 3: and Okay, he has a couple of guys Alex Carusoe.
- 24:01Speaker 1: Yeah, exactly, so you're familiar with the names.
- 24:04Speaker 3: Yeah, so when you look at the Spurs, you're like, Okay, well,
- 24:06Speaker 3: who are those guys that can come in and do
- 24:10Speaker 3: the same thing. Is it Julian Champagne? Is he a
- 24:14Speaker 3: guy that's gonna come in and be a firecracker? Carter
- 24:18Speaker 3: Bryant the young I think he's nineteen years old. I'm
- 24:21Speaker 3: not saying he's very young. Darren Fox, well, he's a starter. Yeah,
- 24:24Speaker 3: So I'm you're talking. You're talking about the role players
- 24:26Speaker 3: that are coming off the bench. Luke Cornett, who is
- 24:28Speaker 3: like a thousand years old who's been hooping forever, but
- 24:31Speaker 3: he's he's valuable. Yeah, those are the players that you're
- 24:34Speaker 3: looking at and saying, Okay, I need you to step
- 24:37Speaker 3: in and can you elevate this team kind of like
- 24:43Speaker 3: you've seen with OKC. And that's why I'm jumping ahead
- 24:45Speaker 3: and saying, yeah, they might be ahead of schedule. And
- 24:47Speaker 3: even Kelden I mentioned Keldon Johnson, I think, but yeah, Kelden,
- 24:51Speaker 3: he is someone that he comes off the bench instant spark.
- 24:54Speaker 3: So now you got two good teams, but who that
- 24:57Speaker 3: bench is going to be I think critical.
- 24:59Speaker 1: Not to mention Ken they slid on SGA.
- 25:01Speaker 3: Because he gets what he wants and I know he's
- 25:03Speaker 3: a foul baita and all that, but when you look
- 25:05Speaker 3: at his westher Garverne finals, it should go six seven games.
- 25:08Speaker 1: But god, okayc is really good.
- 25:11Speaker 3: Like they are disciplined offensively, defensively, they just do a
- 25:16Speaker 3: really good job as a team in a unit. And
- 25:17Speaker 3: I don't know if the Spurs are there, but they're
- 25:19Speaker 3: on a big stage to prove that, yeah, we might
- 25:21Speaker 3: be young, but we're ready for this opportunity. And then
- 25:23Speaker 3: you look at the East Yep, it's just as exciting, right,
- 25:26Speaker 3: I say, Troy Piston's kind of a letdown, unfortunately.
- 25:30Speaker 2: But I thought it was gonna be Neix Pistons. But
- 25:32Speaker 2: a lot of people did.
- 25:33Speaker 3: But shout out to what Cas the Calves did because
- 25:38Speaker 3: for the most part, yeah, everyone was counting them out
- 25:40Speaker 3: thinking not happening. But Donovan Mitchell, he averaged thirty points
- 25:45Speaker 3: per game in this year.
- 25:46Speaker 2: I mean, so I think he's probably in terms of
- 25:49Speaker 2: the star that everyone kind of forgets about.
- 25:51Speaker 3: It's not forget about him, it's just the fact that
- 25:53Speaker 3: he doesn't show up in big moments in the playoffs.
- 25:55Speaker 1: But this year.
- 25:56Speaker 3: Yeah, he has done that and got his team to
- 26:00Speaker 3: the Eastern Conference finals and years past. And that's to
- 26:03Speaker 3: your point about they forgot about him. No, he just
- 26:05Speaker 3: didn't play his best ball. He averaged thirty in the
- 26:08Speaker 3: semis and James Harden he played plus minus wise, he
- 26:12Speaker 3: played good basketball. But when you watch the game, like, yeah,
- 26:15Speaker 3: James could have been more effective here and there.
- 26:17Speaker 2: And I thought they kind of got a little big
- 26:19Speaker 2: three of their own, Evan Mobley James Harden.
- 26:22Speaker 1: No, they do have a big three. Yeah, no doubt
- 26:25Speaker 1: about it.
- 26:25Speaker 3: Absolutely, but that team has just been looked at. It's
- 26:31Speaker 3: just like, ah, they're gonna miss They're gonna do this
- 26:32Speaker 3: this year. They're gonna win sixty games and be out
- 26:34Speaker 3: in the first round. Oh yeah that was actually the
- 26:37Speaker 3: Detroit Pistons. And now the Cleveland Cavaliers have a chance
- 26:40Speaker 3: to do something they haven't done since Lebron James was
- 26:43Speaker 3: in the building.
- 26:43Speaker 1: So this is huge for them.
- 26:44Speaker 2: In the Knicks, they're rolling Jayalen brunts and they're finally
- 26:47Speaker 2: gonna get to the finals. Man, Like I feel like
- 26:49Speaker 2: that they've I think I think this would be the year.
- 26:51Speaker 1: Yeah, the I just.
- 26:55Speaker 3: O Gian and Obi his injury, the hamstring. Those aren't
- 26:58Speaker 3: fun to play with, so that's my concern. If he's healthy,
- 27:02Speaker 3: then I think, yes, they'll win this series and is
- 27:04Speaker 3: probably six games. But if he's not, I would expect
- 27:08Speaker 3: Cleveland to head back to the NBA Finals and take
- 27:10Speaker 3: on OKC.
- 27:11Speaker 1: Okay.
- 27:11Speaker 2: One more quick question before we get to hockey. If
- 27:14Speaker 2: you were to rank of the four teams left, rank
- 27:16Speaker 2: the best player from each team, So Sga, Wemby, Bronson, and.
- 27:22Speaker 1: Mitchell probably I think you just ranked it. You think
- 27:24Speaker 1: so in that order?
- 27:25Speaker 3: Yeah, sgag over Wemby. Huh, Well, I don't care. You're
- 27:29Speaker 3: seven four. Sga is really there's a reason he won MVP.
- 27:33Speaker 3: I'm the best team. He is really good. It's not
- 27:37Speaker 3: a slight to Victor. SGA's just really balling out him. Now,
- 27:41Speaker 3: does he affect the game the way that win Miyama
- 27:43Speaker 3: does on both sides of the ball. Probably not, Because
- 27:45Speaker 3: when mien Yama seven to four and blocks any and everything,
- 27:47Speaker 3: if it's matters, So it does. But we're giving a
- 27:50Speaker 3: lot of credit to do that at seven four, Like, yeah,
- 27:51Speaker 3: but you should be averaging two blocks per game.
- 27:53Speaker 1: That doesn't mean it's not good. It's just it doesn't.
- 27:55Speaker 3: But I'm not going to discredit as a sure just
- 27:57Speaker 3: because he's short, not because he's short, just because he
- 27:59Speaker 3: doesn't have that athletic that length that you would love
- 28:02Speaker 3: to have. So that's my little two cents on that
- 28:04Speaker 3: you ranked it perfectly. Actually, yeah, and I know you
- 28:06Speaker 3: didn't do it.
- 28:07Speaker 1: I did not. You're like, yeah, you knowed.
- 28:11Speaker 2: Okay, all right, I like that. Well, it's head to hockey.
- 28:14Speaker 2: Let's update you. So you know, I've mentioned this, I
- 28:17Speaker 2: think last time that I hosted on the show.
- 28:21Speaker 1: It's so weird.
- 28:21Speaker 2: The hockey format is a little bit weird because Dallas
- 28:24Speaker 2: and Minnesota faced in the first round in the West,
- 28:26Speaker 2: and I think that if you were to rank, you know,
- 28:28Speaker 2: the best teams of the regular season, those are probably
- 28:31Speaker 2: two and three, Colorado being the best team, and then
- 28:34Speaker 2: Dallas and Minnesota were probably two and three, And it
- 28:37Speaker 2: sucks that they had to face each other in.
- 28:38Speaker 1: The first round.
- 28:39Speaker 2: But the way the hockey format works, you have to
- 28:41Speaker 2: play your division first and then you get to play there.
- 28:44Speaker 1: It's just weird.
- 28:47Speaker 2: So Minnesota moves on and Dallas probably being the second
- 28:50Speaker 2: or third best team in the league is out in
- 28:51Speaker 2: the first round.
- 28:52Speaker 1: It's just wild.
- 28:53Speaker 2: And then Minnesota there, uh, you know, reward for beating
- 28:58Speaker 2: this the second or third best team in the league
- 29:00Speaker 2: is to play the first best team in the league
- 29:02Speaker 2: in Colorado in the second round, and Colorado kind of
- 29:05Speaker 2: wiped the floor with them a little bit, showed why
- 29:07Speaker 2: that they are the powerhouse in hockey right now. Nathan McKinnon,
- 29:12Speaker 2: Cale mccarr. Their goaltending is really good. They just have
- 29:15Speaker 2: the complete package. They have depth, they have high end scoring,
- 29:18Speaker 2: they have goaltending, they have a really good coach, they
- 29:20Speaker 2: have playoff pedigree, they've won a title in the last
- 29:23Speaker 2: five years, Like they're with the same cores and it's
- 29:25Speaker 2: they're really good. On the other hand, on the Pacific side,
- 29:28Speaker 2: Vegas out last Anaheim. Anaheim's kind of the feel good
- 29:31Speaker 2: story that you know, probably shouldn't have been in the
- 29:33Speaker 2: playoffs up until this point, or wasn't in the playoffs
- 29:36Speaker 2: until this year for the last few years. They kind
- 29:38Speaker 2: of They beat Edmonton, which was a little bit of
- 29:41Speaker 2: a surprise, and the best player in the world, Connor McDavid,
- 29:43Speaker 2: loses in the first round, but they lose to Vegas
- 29:46Speaker 2: four to two. Vegas Colorado is a very interesting series. Obviously,
- 29:49Speaker 2: Colorado is the upper hand. Like I said, they're the
- 29:51Speaker 2: best team in the league right now. Vegas is a
- 29:53Speaker 2: weird team because I think they have the talent to
- 29:55Speaker 2: play with Colorado. Their goaltending can be extremely in consistent
- 30:00Speaker 2: and their defense can be extremely inconsistent. So if they
- 30:04Speaker 2: if they have a really good version of themselves and
- 30:07Speaker 2: you know, uh their goaltender goes off a little bit,
- 30:10Speaker 2: I think they have a chance to push this to
- 30:12Speaker 2: seven games and possibly win this series. But I expect
- 30:15Speaker 2: Colorado to win that one. And on the other side
- 30:17Speaker 2: in the East, Carolina is the OKC of of of
- 30:22Speaker 2: hockey because I think they play a relatively boring like
- 30:26Speaker 2: way of hockey. Like people say, they've never they haven't
- 30:29Speaker 2: lost a game, and they have like a cheap owner
- 30:31Speaker 2: that everyone's rooting against Tom Dunnan, the same the same
- 30:33Speaker 2: owner as the Portland Trail Blazers, by the way, So
- 30:36Speaker 2: uh yeah, that's it's it's They still have not lost
- 30:39Speaker 2: a game, They've swept two straight series. They're in the
- 30:41Speaker 2: conference finals and the last team in that has yet
- 30:45Speaker 2: to be decided. Because we have a game seven tonight
- 30:47Speaker 2: to get to get to the Eastern Conference finals and
- 30:50Speaker 2: face the Carolina Hurricanes. Between Buffalo and Montreal, both these
- 30:53Speaker 2: teams are fun. Both these teams are young, they're like
- 30:57Speaker 2: you said, it'll probably a little bit ahead of schedule,
- 31:00Speaker 2: so this is this is a super fun series. Obviously,
- 31:03Speaker 2: it's been just fights Central. They they've been clawing it
- 31:06Speaker 2: literally everything. I'm excited for Game seven tonight. Buffalo had
- 31:10Speaker 2: the longest drought of any American sports league of not
- 31:15Speaker 2: making the playoffs, and they made it this year as
- 31:16Speaker 2: a one seed in the East, and they're they're hanging
- 31:19Speaker 2: on for dear life here in Game seven against Montreal
- 31:22Speaker 2: and they're playing at home, so that'll be a fun
- 31:24Speaker 2: one for them to face Carolina. But in terms of
- 31:27Speaker 2: how I kind of handicap all this going, you can't
- 31:31Speaker 2: really bet against Carolina. I do think the other shoe
- 31:34Speaker 2: is gonna drop eventually. I don't think there as much
- 31:37Speaker 2: of a powerhouse as what you're saying about the Thunder
- 31:40Speaker 2: because I compared those two. They obviously haven't lost, they
- 31:43Speaker 2: haven't played anyone. They played probably the two worst teams
- 31:46Speaker 2: in the entire playoffs in the first two rounds. So
- 31:50Speaker 2: Philadelphia and Ottawa, like they kind of were pretty lucky
- 31:53Speaker 2: to even get there at that point. So I think
- 31:55Speaker 2: whoever wins a Buffalo Montreal though obviously a little be
- 31:57Speaker 2: a little beat up because Carolina has been sitting there waiting,
- 31:59Speaker 2: but they've also and sitting there waiting, so Russ versus
- 32:02Speaker 2: Rest and all that stuff. But I think it's Colorado's
- 32:05Speaker 2: cut to lose at this point. You know, we'll see
- 32:07Speaker 2: what ends up happening there. They're a fun team to watch,
- 32:10Speaker 2: and they just they have all the pieces and I
- 32:12Speaker 2: think they're the only team right now that I could say, Yeah,
- 32:14Speaker 2: maybe Carolina too, but they have a little bit of
- 32:18Speaker 2: higher end scoring that Carolina doesn't have. So any questions,
- 32:22Speaker 2: Christopher Kidd.
- 32:23Speaker 1: Nah man, you got me all caught up. Okay.
- 32:25Speaker 3: My only question is maybe we could talk about this next?
- 32:27Speaker 3: Is how big is this world not world series? This
- 32:31Speaker 3: series against the Chicago White Sox.
- 32:33Speaker 1: Is it big at all? Is it irrelevant? Doesn't matter?
- 32:36Speaker 3: It's May eighteen, It's never irrelevant, but it's a borderline, okay,
- 32:40Speaker 3: is it?
- 32:40Speaker 1: Like for real? Think about it all? Right?
- 32:42Speaker 3: It's May eighteenth, this team is struggling. Yeah, is it
- 32:45Speaker 3: relevant now when we look back at it in September?
- 32:48Speaker 3: God dang it, Christian Mover, if you should, I mean,
- 32:50Speaker 3: it could be that, but I seriously doubt that. Yeah,
- 32:53Speaker 3: I think that's interesting discussion to have. Let's do it, Okay,
- 32:56Speaker 3: fair enough.
- 32:57Speaker 2: Yeah, let's let's talk about how big is this series
- 32:58Speaker 2: against the White Sox. Is it one of those where
- 33:00Speaker 2: you feel like you have to win the series or
- 33:02Speaker 2: is it one of those where it's like, yeah, it's
- 33:03Speaker 2: still May eighteenth, you know, it's not Memorial Day weekend.
- 33:06Speaker 2: Yet we're not gonna hit the panic button, you know whatever. Well,
- 33:09Speaker 2: we'll talk about that next on Sports Ready on ninety
- 33:11Speaker 2: three point three KJRFM. Welcome Back Sports Radio ninety three
- 33:21Speaker 2: point three kJ r F M ten o'clock hour, myself,
- 33:24Speaker 2: Anderson Hurst, Christopher Kidt filling in for.
- 33:28Speaker 1: Gregathon Bell. Is that his full name?
- 33:30Speaker 2: You think it is just Greg greg Yeah, there's two
- 33:34Speaker 2: g's in there, greg any Greg. I don't know what's
- 33:37Speaker 2: what's a full name for Greg Gregory? Gregory Gregory, that's there.
- 33:41Speaker 2: I think it's Greg's okay, all right, Especially if it's
- 33:44Speaker 2: two g's, that kind of tells you it's like, hey,
- 33:45Speaker 2: it stops here, right.
- 33:48Speaker 3: Uh.
- 33:48Speaker 2: He's spending most of this week in the East Coast,
- 33:53Speaker 2: and I did find out thanks to the text line
- 33:55Speaker 2: letting us know that New London, Connecticut is where the
- 34:00Speaker 2: Coast Guard Academy is located. His daughter is graduating from
- 34:04Speaker 2: that prestigious university, So congratulations to him. I'm excited for
- 34:09Speaker 2: him to experience that and he enjoy a couple days
- 34:12Speaker 2: off as well.
- 34:13Speaker 1: Well.
- 34:13Speaker 2: We talked about it a little bit at the end
- 34:15Speaker 2: of last segments. Christopher Kidd poised this corposed this question
- 34:20Speaker 2: to me regarding how big this series is for the
- 34:23Speaker 2: Seattle Marrigers against the Chicago White Sox. And you know,
- 34:26Speaker 2: I think you can look at it kind of two
- 34:27Speaker 2: different ways. You can look at it like, hey, it's
- 34:31Speaker 2: still pretty early in the season. Like I know, people
- 34:34Speaker 2: get so tired of hearing that, But it is such
- 34:36Speaker 2: a long season and your division is not very good.
- 34:39Speaker 2: You're still just two games out, even after getting swept
- 34:42Speaker 2: over the weekend, you're in pretty good shape to just
- 34:47Speaker 2: if you can shread water. And this is the other
- 34:49Speaker 2: part that I can be somewhat positive on, if you
- 34:52Speaker 2: can tread water. While Brendan Donovan cal Rawly and we'll
- 34:55Speaker 2: see how long JP Crawford are out for then then
- 34:59Speaker 2: once those guys come back, you can make a run.
- 35:01Speaker 2: But the other thing is you expect the other parts
- 35:05Speaker 2: of your roster to kind of, you know, carry those
- 35:07Speaker 2: guys and pick it up right. And you know, I
- 35:10Speaker 2: haven't been extremely disappointed with Julia Rodriguez's output so far
- 35:15Speaker 2: this year, but this is his moment now, with cal
- 35:19Speaker 2: Rawly going on the injury list for the first time
- 35:21Speaker 2: in his career, this is kind of his moment to
- 35:22Speaker 2: be like, hey, it's my turn to carry this offense, right,
- 35:26Speaker 2: And we've seen him do it before, but we need
- 35:29Speaker 2: it now.
- 35:29Speaker 1: We need it in May.
- 35:30Speaker 2: It's something that we haven't really said before with him
- 35:34Speaker 2: and Randy rose Arena, I feel like has been quietly
- 35:37Speaker 2: super consistent, especially offensively this year. We talked about Cole
- 35:41Speaker 2: Young a lot as well. There are players on this
- 35:45Speaker 2: team that can still carry your team, but you need
- 35:47Speaker 2: to do it now. So Chris, I'll ask you first,
- 35:50Speaker 2: how big is this series specifically against the White Sox.
- 35:53Speaker 3: I think in terms of where this team wants to go,
- 35:57Speaker 3: who they want to.
- 35:58Speaker 2: Be, Yeah, I think it's huge, really huge. You say huge,
- 36:02Speaker 2: I think it's huge for this team, not.
- 36:04Speaker 3: For in terms of for the morale where they want
- 36:08Speaker 3: to be. I think it's that simple, where they are
- 36:10Speaker 3: who they think they should be. For them, not as
- 36:13Speaker 3: a fan stating oh it's a rap if they don't.
- 36:16Speaker 3: I think for them there's a little pressure added to
- 36:19Speaker 3: it because they're not happy with what they've put out
- 36:21Speaker 3: on the field.
- 36:21Speaker 1: Yep.
- 36:22Speaker 3: And that's what I'm looking at it from. I'm not
- 36:24Speaker 3: putting it on saying oh, yeah, they lose this series,
- 36:27Speaker 3: it's a rap. They're not winning anything. But I think
- 36:29Speaker 3: from their dvantage point, they're like, yeah, guys, we got
- 36:31Speaker 3: to wake up.
- 36:32Speaker 1: We can't keep losing and losing and but oh yeah,
- 36:35Speaker 1: we'll figure.
- 36:36Speaker 3: I think for them that it's important, and for me,
- 36:39Speaker 3: I would say it's not huge, but I think you
- 36:42Speaker 3: got to win this series. It's not a must win.
- 36:44Speaker 3: I'm not going to sit there and tell you that.
- 36:45Speaker 3: Obviously you want to win as many games as you can.
- 36:48Speaker 3: But at the same time, I don't think like, if
- 36:50Speaker 3: they lose this it's a rap.
- 36:51Speaker 2: Yeah, And I think the kind of conversation you just
- 36:56Speaker 2: exposed there is something that a lot of baseball fans
- 37:00Speaker 2: have trouble understanding sometimes. Is you know this idea that
- 37:06Speaker 2: you can why doesn't every baseball team just you know,
- 37:12Speaker 2: have so much more urgency. Why don't they treat every
- 37:15Speaker 2: game like it's the World Series?
- 37:16Speaker 1: You know what I mean? Because there's one hundred thousand
- 37:18Speaker 1: of them, that's all why?
- 37:20Speaker 2: And okay, even say you have the most elite of
- 37:23Speaker 2: elite sports psychologists in your building and you treat every
- 37:28Speaker 2: game like that and you get your players to buy
- 37:30Speaker 2: in that every single game is like a World Series.
- 37:33Speaker 1: Well, if you.
- 37:34Speaker 2: Do that, then that means when you lose some games,
- 37:38Speaker 2: which are bound to happen. The best teams in baseball
- 37:41Speaker 2: lose sixty plus games. The best teams in baseball lose
- 37:45Speaker 2: sixty plus games every single year. So when you lose
- 37:49Speaker 2: those games, it's the bottom can easily fall out because
- 37:54Speaker 2: you're putting so much pressure on yourself to win those
- 37:56Speaker 2: That's why the whole even keel conversation comes into play.
- 38:00Speaker 2: Don't get too high, don't get too low. Even when
- 38:02Speaker 2: you're on a run, it's like, hey, we're just playing baseball.
- 38:04Speaker 1: We're good. When you're in a slump, hey we're just
- 38:06Speaker 1: playing baseball. We're good. We'll get back to where we are.
- 38:09Speaker 2: That is the kind of dichotomy of not putting too
- 38:13Speaker 2: much pressure on yourself. But there is a balance. I
- 38:15Speaker 2: do think that when you get in a run like
- 38:17Speaker 2: the Mariners are in right now, they need to kind
- 38:20Speaker 2: of get a little kick in the backside. So I'll
- 38:21Speaker 2: answer my own question, or Chris's question, actually, because he
- 38:24Speaker 2: was the one who kind of posed it. I think
- 38:27Speaker 2: this series, if nothing else, it's big because you need
- 38:31Speaker 2: to beat the White Sox because you lost to them
- 38:34Speaker 2: last week in their own home stadium, and you need
- 38:38Speaker 2: to kind of put the sour taste of this weekend
- 38:40Speaker 2: in the rear view mirror. Now we've done that the
- 38:42Speaker 2: last like three series. If you look at their overall,
- 38:47Speaker 2: you know, series record, they got swept by the Padres,
- 38:51Speaker 2: But previous to that, they won three out of four
- 38:53Speaker 2: against the Astros. Before that, you lose two out of
- 38:56Speaker 2: three to the White Sox. Before that, you win to
- 38:58Speaker 2: out of three against the Raves, who are the best
- 39:01Speaker 2: team in baseball. Before that, you lose two out of
- 39:04Speaker 2: three to the Royal. It's like, it's one step forward,
- 39:06Speaker 2: one step back for this team, right and there are
- 39:09Speaker 2: no and you got to you gotta get some sort
- 39:11Speaker 2: of momentum going here in May so and you do
- 39:14Speaker 2: see signs that this this team can take that next step,
- 39:17Speaker 2: but I need to see a little kick in the
- 39:19Speaker 2: backside to make sure that you can get that done.
- 39:22Speaker 1: I'm right there with you.
- 39:23Speaker 2: Let's uh, let's get the thoughts of Chuck Powell. We're
- 39:25Speaker 2: gonna hear what he thinks, how much Dan Wilson has
- 39:28Speaker 2: to do with all this. You know what he thought
- 39:31Speaker 2: of Colt Emerson's debut yesterday, where he expects him to
- 39:35Speaker 2: play moving forward, where you have a lot to pick
- 39:37Speaker 2: the brain on with mister Chuck Powell. Coming up next
- 39:40Speaker 2: on Sports Radio ninety three point three kJ RFM,
