- 0:04Speaker 1: Well, here's the best columnist in America, Michael Goodwin. You
- 0:13Speaker 1: can read his column every Sunday and every Wednesday in
- 0:17Speaker 1: the New York Post. All of his columns are up
- 0:19Speaker 1: on the New York Post website. Michael Goodwin, how are you?
- 0:23Speaker 2: Good morning, Mark. Thank you.
- 0:25Speaker 1: Hey, there's some old political hands, long-time campaign guys that
- 0:30Speaker 1: say the Republicans are actually in a pretty good position.
- 0:33Speaker 1: You want to be a little behind at this point
- 0:35Speaker 1: and surge at the end. You don't want to be
- 0:37Speaker 1: too far ahead too soon. President Trump running around the
- 0:40Speaker 1: country campaigning. What do you think the chances are for
- 0:42Speaker 1: the Republicans?
- 0:44Speaker 2: Well, I agree with Karl Rove's analysis. That is, the
- 0:51Speaker 2: polls are probably overstating the Democrats' advantage. Nonetheless, I think
- 0:59Speaker 2: that is what most people believe. We can argue over
- 1:03Speaker 2: the extent of the advantage. Is it 4 points, 6 points,
- 1:08Speaker 2: 8 points on the generic vote? But combined with President
- 1:13Speaker 2: Trump's low approval rating consistently in all polls, I do
- 1:19Speaker 2: think this is now... a race where Democrats have the lead.
- 1:25Speaker 2: It's not over yet, but time is short. Yeah.
- 1:30Speaker 1: And Bruce Blakeman in New York, he was 20 points behind.
- 1:33Speaker 1: Now it's pretty much neck and neck in the real polls.
- 1:36Speaker 1: What do you think?
- 1:41Speaker 2: I think Hochul is pulling out all the stops to
- 1:46Speaker 2: use the power of the office to For example, the
- 1:50Speaker 2: way she jumped on this Cornell case is very much about,
- 1:56Speaker 2: you know, me, me, me. It's not about the case.
- 1:59Speaker 2: It's about, look at me. I'm doing something about it. And,
- 2:02Speaker 2: of course, in picking Letitia James, I think she has
- 2:08Speaker 2: tried to guarantee that there will be convictions in a
- 2:12Speaker 2: criminal case. So I think it's hopeful. at her usual,
- 2:17Speaker 2: which is not really taking chances, not really fighting for
- 2:23Speaker 2: anything that isn't already approved by the Democratic Party. I mean,
- 2:30Speaker 2: she is really more a representative of the party than
- 2:35Speaker 2: she is a governor of the state. Yeah.
- 2:38Speaker 1: Has anybody pointed out that Letitia James has absolutely no
- 2:43Speaker 1: experience prosecuting criminal cases and never done it in her life?
- 2:47Speaker 1: But wouldn't you think she's the wrong choice for this? Also,
- 2:49Speaker 1: she's too political.
- 2:51Speaker 2: Yeah, I think that point, Mark, is really a good one.
- 2:58Speaker 2: She's very active on social media and very active press office.
- 3:05Speaker 2: Everything is partisan. I feel like every day I get
- 3:11Speaker 2: an email from her office telling me, we're suing the
- 3:14Speaker 2: Trump administration. So this is what she has turned the
- 3:20Speaker 2: office into, a 24-hour-a-day campaign against the president and therefore
- 3:28Speaker 2: for her and for the Democratic left. It doesn't give
- 3:34Speaker 2: me any confidence that she'll ever do anything fair if
- 3:40Speaker 2: it's a controversy. She will always hurt. her default position
- 3:46Speaker 2: is political, to go back to the outsider outrage at
- 3:52Speaker 2: the politics of it. And so, yes, I think this
- 3:56Speaker 2: is a mistake by Hochul and one that obviously will
- 4:01Speaker 2: not hurt her before the campaign is over. But down
- 4:05Speaker 2: the road, it could turn out to have been a
- 4:08Speaker 2: big mistake.
- 4:09Speaker 1: Yeah. Hey, our crazy Mayor Mamdani, what is he up to?
- 4:14Speaker 1: A couple of days ago, he puts out a video
- 4:17Speaker 1: all about fighting anti-Semitism. Yesterday, he puts out a bunch
- 4:21Speaker 1: of pictures of him. He went to see some Orthodox
- 4:24Speaker 1: rabbis and have dinner with them. What is he up to?
- 4:28Speaker 2: Well, look, I think he is preaching to his choir
- 4:33Speaker 2: in the sense that some of the Orthodox groups have
- 4:37Speaker 2: been supportive of him. He has been very generous to
- 4:41Speaker 2: them in government programs. And I think he's carving out
- 4:47Speaker 2: for himself not only some votes, but some testimony that
- 4:54Speaker 2: he's not an anti-Semite. Look, I think that does not
- 5:00Speaker 2: carry you in the popular places of the city. Your policies,
- 5:07Speaker 2: you know, the whole thing that You want to arrest Netanyahu,
- 5:11Speaker 2: you still want to arrest him. You want the United
- 5:14Speaker 2: States to recognize the International Criminal Court, which could then
- 5:19Speaker 2: arrest and imprison American soldiers anywhere around the world. This
- 5:27Speaker 2: is a huge mistake. So I think he's trying to
- 5:31Speaker 2: change his image, but I don't believe for a minute
- 5:34Speaker 2: he has changed his stripes. Yeah.
- 5:37Speaker 1: Well, his other stripe is that he just talks. He
- 5:39Speaker 1: doesn't do anything. And why don't his supporters notice he's
- 5:42Speaker 1: yelling and screaming about arresting Netanyahu? Netanyahu is here for
- 5:46Speaker 1: two days. He doesn't do a damn thing about it.
- 5:48Speaker 1: Netanyahu leaves, and he's yelling and screaming about arresting him.
- 5:50Speaker 1: He just talks. He never actually does anything. Don't his
- 5:53Speaker 1: supporters see that?
- 5:55Speaker 2: Yeah, I think, Mark, that he's always, in effect, trying
- 6:01Speaker 2: to draw a contrast between himself and And every mayor
- 6:06Speaker 2: who came before him, see, I'm different. Maybe I don't
- 6:10Speaker 2: get it done, but I say things differently. I talk differently.
- 6:16Speaker 2: You know my heart is different. And so I think
- 6:20Speaker 2: he's always speaking to the converted. He's never speaking to
- 6:24Speaker 2: people who don't already support him with ideas that would transcend.
- 6:30Speaker 2: I think it's a mistake. a mayor, a governor, a president,
- 6:34Speaker 2: you always have to enlarge your vision and your rhetoric
- 6:40Speaker 2: to get those people who don't support you. And I
- 6:46Speaker 2: get the feeling at this point, he's not even trying.
- 6:50Speaker 2: He's comfortable. The election was so close. He's still in
- 6:56Speaker 2: his first year. So I think at some point, he's
- 7:00Speaker 2: going to have to understand that it's not enough to
- 7:03Speaker 2: carry you through four years just preaching to the choir.
- 7:08Speaker 1: Well, didn't de Blasio get away with that and get reelected?
- 7:14Speaker 2: He did. And that is one of the problems of
- 7:17Speaker 2: such a democratic leading city, that there's no real opposition. Now,
- 7:23Speaker 2: we'll see. Right now, there is no strong opposition to
- 7:29Speaker 2: Mondani in the Democratic in a single person or institution.
- 7:35Speaker 2: But I am confident that if he continues down this road,
- 7:42Speaker 2: he will face increasing opposition and complaints, and he will
- 7:47Speaker 2: have to change his tune to keep his job. Yeah.
- 7:51Speaker 1: Well, we'll see. Also, this pied-à-terre tax, The Wilbur Ross
- 7:59Speaker 1: lawsuit looks brilliant. It's violating the Commerce Clause. It's taxation
- 8:03Speaker 1: without representation. You're taxing people who can't vote here. I
- 8:07Speaker 1: think that's going to win that lawsuit.
- 8:09Speaker 2: Well, look, I think the fact that another case has
- 8:16Speaker 2: led to it being sent back to the starting line
- 8:20Speaker 2: because the haphazard way they just threw as many apartments
- 8:25Speaker 2: and owners into it as they could. just to get
- 8:28Speaker 2: the numbers up, and really, I think, to harass people
- 8:31Speaker 2: and say, just pay. Just pay us, and we'll leave
- 8:35Speaker 2: you alone. I mean, it's like a mafia shakedown, right?
- 8:41Speaker 2: But look, I do hope this thing fails, and I
- 8:44Speaker 2: hope it fails, and I hope it backfires on Kathy Hochul.
- 8:49Speaker 2: She did this, and she should be penalized as well
- 8:53Speaker 2: as the mayor.
- 8:54Speaker 1: Yeah, good point. Well, Michael Goodwin, brilliant as always. Everybody
- 8:58Speaker 1: should read Michael Goodwin in the New York Post every
- 9:01Speaker 1: Sunday and every Wednesday. All of his columns are up
- 9:03Speaker 1: on the New York Post website. Go read them. Michael Goodwin,
- 9:07Speaker 1: thanks for being with us.
- 9:09Speaker 2: My pleasure. Thank you, Mark.
- 9:11Speaker 1: Take care. Hey, let's not forget Andrew Cuomo. He deserves credit.
- 9:15Speaker 1: He was the first guy, I remember, pushing this pied-a-terre tax.
- 9:20Speaker 1: He was the first guy pushing all of that stuff. Remember,
- 9:23Speaker 1: he was the guy pushing no bail, no jail. Give
- 9:26Speaker 1: him credit for all the terrible things that have come out. Hey,
- 9:29Speaker 1: we got a lot to get to. And don't forget,
- 9:31Speaker 1: it's three hours every day now. Now I start at
- 9:34Speaker 1: nine o'clock. It's nine to noon, three hours every day.
- 9:37Speaker 1: Then at noon, you got Buck and Clay. That's a
- 9:41Speaker 1: very interesting show every day, noon to three. Three o'clock,
- 9:44Speaker 1: you got the most listened to radio show in America,
- 9:47Speaker 1: Sean Hannity. You got Jesse Kelly at six. And at
- 9:51Speaker 1: nine o'clock, Jimmy Fallon. Boy, he really makes some great points.
- 9:55Speaker 1: You'll learn a lot, and it's the funniest show around.
- 9:57Speaker 1: Jimmy Fela, 9 to midnight on 710WOR.
