- 0:00While Australian farmers say the Middle East conflict is rapidly driving
- 0:03up a threat to our food security, more dangerous than the choking of
- 0:06global oil supplies, our crops rely heavily on
- 0:11This is going to be really impacting our farmers in Australia. We're not
- 0:14having access to diesel, not having access to fertiliser. Who
- 0:19So what are fertiliser prices up to? They're going up, quickly. Why?
- 0:23higher fertilizer, higher fuel, higher machinery, higher interest rates. Everything's
- 0:28Isn't it amazing that a government can so terribly run the economy and
- 0:34Cheers, Albo. Albo's definitely not helping us grow
- 0:37our businesses the way we're going at the moment with rates and cost of living
- 0:45Since when does electric trucks work in Western Queensland? These
- 0:48guys have got absolutely no idea about rural Australia. Welcome
- 0:52to Dollars in the Dirt. I'm Brecon Curtis and this is where we break down
- 0:55the finance side of farming so you can grow your operation, buy
- 0:59that next property and build real wealth. Let's get into
- 1:02it. We're going to do some more reaction videos today, some videos that have gone viral
- 1:06on TikTok and Instagram. Here we go. Let's see what
- 1:10Now, just have a quick listen to Barnaby trying to explain some basic
- 1:16We love cattle. We've got, I've got diesel. You
- 1:23Now listen to what someone who has immense power in our government at the moment has
- 1:32Oh, electric vehicles? What is she talking about? Seriously? Electric
- 1:36trucks? Since when does electric trucks work in Western Queensland? Where
- 1:40are they going to charge them? How is an electric truck going to go from
- 1:44Winton to Brisbane with a load of cattle? Like seriously, these
- 1:51Isn't it amazing that a government can so terribly run the economy and
- 1:55drive cost of living through the roof? Cost of living going through the roof? That's
- 1:58an understatement if I ever heard one. And your reward for that as a working
- 2:02Australian is you have to pay more for your mortgage. Cheers,
- 2:07How true is that? Our cost of living going through the roof, interest rates
- 2:11going up, just shows that we need to really make
- 2:14sure that we're across our business and know exactly what's going on at the moment because this
- 2:18Albo is definitely not helping us grow our businesses the way
- 2:21we're going at the moment with rates and cost of living going up constantly over
- 2:25time. Yeah, it's really important to have someone on your team to understand what
- 2:29a higher interest rate means for your business and how that impact is
- 2:33going to have on your bottom line. So having a good broker in
- 2:36your corner, looking ahead to make sure that there's
- 2:40nothing on the horizon that's going to impact your cash flow, make sure that
- 2:43you're going to meet all your commitments is really important in this climate
- 2:48El Presidente Chuck Norris has just kicked off Operation
- 2:52Epic Fury. So I'm just wondering where my input costs are
- 2:59I just woke up. A bedhead. What's
- 3:12So what are fertiliser prices up to? They're going up quickly. Why?
- 3:16Higher fertilizer, higher fuel, higher machinery, higher interest rates. Everything's
- 3:21The Iran conflict has closed the Strait of Hormuz. And
- 3:24we get most of our fertilizer from Morocco and the Middle East. So
- 3:28supply is impossible. Like, we might run out. But it's not like you're
- 3:31ordering ships of fertilizer last minute just before we start selling.
- 3:35Isn't that what you fellas are doing? Yeah, righto. Yeah,
- 3:38you got me. But don't we make fertilizer in Australia? We got heaps of
- 3:44Everything's going to go up by the way these guys are going. Now's probably a good time to do
- 3:48a really good deep dive and review of your business, your finance costs,
- 3:51all the costs in your business to make sure that if there's an uptick in
- 3:55any of them, that you're across it and you're ahead of the game. before
- 3:59you realise that things have become too expensive and it's making you
- 4:02unviable. So being, you know, finance ready at
- 4:05this point in time is really important because you don't want to be scrambling to
- 4:09get that all together or accessing capital if you need it when it's too
- 4:12late. There's always external factors like obviously the war, but
- 4:16you know, there's always going to be fires or floods or there's also
- 4:20commodity prices are going to drop. You need to always make sure that your
- 4:23business is in a position that you're prepared to deal with any shocks that
- 4:26may come across the desk at any point. Just quickly, if you're
- 4:30tired of expanding your operation to a new bank manager every year, only to

- 5:05While Australian farmers say the Middle East conflict is rapidly driving
- 5:09up a threat to our food security, more dangerous than the choking of
- 5:14Our crops rely heavily on fertiliser and with global shipping... Yeah,
- 5:18this is critical for our farmers need to make sure we're really organised at
- 5:21this point in time because fertiliser prices go through the roof, diesel
- 5:26For farmers like Jacob Wright, Iran closing the
- 5:29trade-rich sea lanes through the Strait of Hormuz is
- 5:33doubly alarming. Yes, Tehran is throttling global
- 5:40This is going to be really, really, really impacting our
- 5:44farmers in Australia. We're not having access to diesel, not having access
- 5:47to fertilizer. who knows how long this is going to go on for and
- 5:50what impact it's going to have on farmers. But these shocks aren't
- 5:54uncommon to agricultural businesses. There's often shocks
- 5:57with droughts or floods or in the
- 6:00past there's been diesel shortages, fertilizer shortages. These
- 6:04all have an impact on your business and the guys that really
- 6:08can have a an understanding of their business, understanding having
- 6:12to stockpile, being able to stockpile, have stuff put away for things
- 6:16like this, and having the cash to be able to do that. They're the people that have got through this a
- 6:19lot less impacted than what the guys that didn't have a plan
- 6:22around these sudden shocks. So yeah, like with
- 6:26every crisis, there's often opportunities that come out of it. And so, you
- 6:29know, Australian farmers need to try and navigate through this to
- 6:33understand what opportunities might come, you know, prices of wheat
- 6:36might go through the roof or, you know, there might be also, you know, the price of
- 6:39beef might go through the roof. So, you know, we need to make sure that we're positioned to
- 6:43take advantage of opportunities as they arise. And, you know, who
- 6:46knows, just making sure you've got your business in a position that's
- 6:50well-placed to make the most of those opportunities if they come up.
