- 0:00Good evening and welcome to the PCR Sports Show for the start of
- 0:04your sporting weekend. Thank you for joining us on this
- 0:07Friday evening. If this is your first occasion
- 0:11of listening to us, thank you for your time this evening.
- 0:13Over the next hour, we're going to be talking to Lucy Payton.
- 0:17Payton sorry from living sports, Kelly Joyner from the Thomas
- 0:21Deacon Academy and students Veronica and Annabelle from the
- 0:25Academy here in the school. All about how he can get
- 0:28Peterborough more active and utilizing the green space in our
- 0:32city and we'll be chatting to them very shortly.
- 0:36Lucy, welcome to the PCR Sports Show this evening.
- 0:40Thank you very. Much good.
- 0:42Evening just come a little bit closer to the mic for me so we
- 0:44can all hear you thank you so living sports, who are they what
- 0:50do they do just give us a little bit of background on living
- 0:53sport please of. Course so living sports are at
- 0:56Cambridgeshire and Peterborough. We work across the whole county,
- 1:01but this work is Peterborough based, it's a place partnership
- 1:05development programme that's being funded by Sport England to
- 1:11help increase participation in activity.
- 1:14So the stats show us that over 30% of Peterborough people,
- 1:19young and old are, are considered, and I'm sorry to put
- 1:21this in the category, but inactive.
- 1:24So we want to support a decrease in that so that people are
- 1:29living better, healthier, more active lives.
- 1:32Initially your role then in helping to do that, so that's
- 1:35living sport, but you've got a specific role here to play
- 1:38within the city, haven't you? Yes, so so living sport do have,
- 1:42you know, separate strands. We have like a health section.
- 1:46We have a children and young people that work in schools and
- 1:49my role sits under sort of place in communities.
- 1:52So this place partnership funded programme is for two years,
- 1:58which started in October 2024. To look at the current, I put
- 2:04my, if you can see me, I'm doing inverted brackets, what the
- 2:07system looks like at the moment, which there isn't a system.
- 2:10There's some great clubs, great community groups that provide
- 2:15activities and sporting opportunities for Peterborough
- 2:18people, but we're not very well connected.
- 2:21There's a lot of inequalities, a lot of barriers preventing
- 2:25people from being more active. So our role is to look at unpick
- 2:31that. So we started off with a bit of
- 2:34mapping to, to find out you know, who, who's, who do we have
- 2:37networking. And then we've put together a
- 2:39steering group, A strategic steering group, which has 8
- 2:44sectors around the table. So we've got Peterborough City
- 2:47Council, that's the local authority.
- 2:49We have the integrated neighborhood teams, we have PCVS
- 2:53which are the council of voluntary sector.
- 2:56We have Theme Park Trust as a huge asset of in Peterborough
- 3:02and we have Vivacity, which deliver a lot of Commission
- 3:06services and living sports. They're all working together to
- 3:10look at how, where, where is there room for improvement and
- 3:14what's needed. And that's all within this city.
- 3:16So it sounds like it's very much a part, yeah, very much a
- 3:20partnership LED approach this it's not just one, one
- 3:23organization or group taking the lead here.
- 3:25It's about coming together for the betterment of it's not just
- 3:30necessarily adults, but certainly the youth of the city.
- 3:33Percent. And that's what it was.
- 3:34It's all about. It's that collaboration and
- 3:36making those collective decisions.
- 3:40So yeah. Brilliant stuff.
- 3:42And how long have you been in the role now?
- 3:44Since October 24. So I was new to living sport
- 3:47then. And yeah, like I say this, this
- 3:50development is going to tell us what changes, you know, we could
- 3:54implement so that we can apply for further funding to actually
- 3:56put that in place. But at the moment, it's just
- 3:59getting in touch with, you know, who's delivering, who's
- 4:02commissioning, who holds the policies, who purse strings, you
- 4:07know, it's, it's everyone that's involved and it's not sport,
- 4:09it's physical activity. It's anything.
- 4:12Movement related, exactly. Yeah.
- 4:14So it doesn't have to be, you know, perception of sport,
- 4:16running, football, cricket, no rugby, basketball.
- 4:19It can be just getting people moving more, perhaps, you know,
- 4:23just walking to the shop instead of perhaps getting in the car.
- 4:26Exactly that, you know, and it's, it's looking at, it's
- 4:29almost like how do we change behaviour to make activity part
- 4:35of normal day life. So is the norm because the
- 4:39benefits of being active? I'm sure we all know is is good
- 4:43for so many different reasons. And the knock on effect of that
- 4:46mental health, I guess comes plays a huge part in that.
- 4:49Yeah, I mean for children, you know, it's, it's not only their
- 4:54physical growth, it's their mental growth, it's their
- 4:56confidence moving into adults. It's it's a good, you know,
- 5:00prevention of a lot of diseases or helps manage a lot of
- 5:03diseases and conditions. And for older people keeping
- 5:07that strength up in the balance is preventing falls.
- 5:10So it's for all ages. So the the work that we're doing
- 5:13is from age 5 up until no limit and how it's delivered at the
- 5:19moment where it's delivered and could we be doing better?
- 5:22And the knock on effect of that is I suppose has a positive
- 5:26effect on the NHSI guess in years to come from that a lot.
- 5:28Of money, yeah, yeah. So I'm getting people moving.
- 5:32Yeah, exactly. That and in terms of barriers at
- 5:35the moment, a couple of them, I mean, I'm sure there's plenty
- 5:39there's. Plenty, yeah, but.
- 5:42You know they need to be broken down in.
- 5:43The times we live in, cost of living, so affordability is top,
- 5:48but it's time. Does it fit in with people's
- 5:51lifestyles? Accessibility.
- 5:53Is there public transport? It can get you places so that
- 5:57it's it's. The list is endless and it's
- 6:00trying to find solutions to tackle those.
- 6:03Yeah, I guess that comes down to behavioural change as well then.
- 6:06It does and that that's a big key of, you know, changing that,
- 6:10not only the the system, shifting the system into
- 6:12something that can manage that and support that, but promoting
- 6:15the awareness to all ages that change behaviour will actually
- 6:20benefit you in your lifestyle. And those around you as well, no
- 6:24doubt. And those around you.
- 6:27And I guess that's where Thomas Deacon Academy come into it.
- 6:30Yeah. So like I said, this is a, this
- 6:32is a big piece of work that we're doing citywide, but part
- 6:35of the place partnership is that we have a small pot of funding
- 6:40to test out different ways. So we've got two test and learn
- 6:44pilots, one over in Wittering, which is a, a rural, rural ward.
- 6:49Yeah. And Central.
- 6:51Central, Like I said, we could have picked any age, but we've
- 6:55gone for it. The steering group decided 11 to
- 6:5818. And what is the value in use of
- 7:01green space to that age range? We've picked Central.
- 7:06It's, you know, a lot happening. There's a lot of antisocial
- 7:10behaviour, there's sort of barriers of white, young people
- 7:13are not using those outdoor spaces.
- 7:15And there's quite a limited amount of green space in Central
- 7:19Ward. So you've got Stanley Park, the
- 7:21Embankment, Cathedral's got some, you know, green, green
- 7:24space, but it's very limited. And actually some stats that
- 7:28show that 51% of people that actually live in Central Ward
- 7:31live in flats. So it drove us to think that's
- 7:35starting Central and rural Ward as a as a comparison.
- 7:40Yeah. So yes, we got in touch with
- 7:42Thomas Deakin School to see if they could help us do our work.
- 7:46And because of where they're based and where their pupils
- 7:50will come from, Central Ward effectively.
- 7:52Yeah, I mean, they're just on the border of Central and I
- 7:54don't want to be too demographic by restricting things, but
- 7:57actually there's a high percentage of pupils at Thomas
- 7:59Deakin that do Devon Central ward.
- 8:01It's an exciting opportunity for the city.
- 8:04It's, it's, it's huge and it's, it's long term.
- 8:06We're not just here just to deliver a few activities and run
- 8:10away. This is like, you know, this is
- 8:12a change for the future. This is long term.
- 8:14So it's all very exciting because I'm very passionate
- 8:17about. It well, we're lucky to be
- 8:19joined this evening as well by Thomas Deacon Academy.
- 8:23We've got Kelly Joyner with us who's the community engagement
- 8:26lead, Kelly, and you're very much part of this opportunity
- 8:30for the city. Yeah, I think so.
- 8:32My role as community engagement leaders to share the talent we
- 8:36have in our school building with the local community and further
- 8:39afield as well. And we know our students are
- 8:43incredible. So and we encourage them to not
- 8:45wait until they're an adult to go out there and make the world
- 8:48a better place. Go do it now.
- 8:50And as you'll hear from the guys that are with me and trying to
- 8:54not make eye contact with. Me right now that that.
- 8:56Is exactly what they are doing. So working with Living Sport on
- 9:00this place partnership just gives them exactly that
- 9:03opportunity to collaborate with a, a really established, really
- 9:08organised group of people to bring their talents and
- 9:12expertise as young people to the project that they're going to
- 9:15lead themselves. And I think we talk about at
- 9:20Thomas Deakin, it's not just about leaving school with a bag
- 9:22full of results, it's also a bag full of character.
- 9:26And then getting involved in sports and involved in the local
- 9:30community and encouraging other people to take part in those
- 9:32activities really helps students to develop that character long
- 9:36term. And they take that with them and
- 9:38it sets them apart from other people.
- 9:40You can walk out of school with all the A stars, but if you walk
- 9:43out of school with all the A stars and no character, you
- 9:47won't you won't go far in life. So as you'll hear shortly, I'm
- 9:51sure that we develop students with enormous bags of character
- 9:55and. TDA Thomas Deakin Academy, from
- 9:58the school's perspective, really in the heart of the city as well
- 10:01and taking those boundaries away that Lucy mentioned there, that
- 10:04is probably the number one Academy within that area for
- 10:08pupils to attend. Agreed.
- 10:10It's it's and like we said, we're not actually in Central
- 10:13Ward. We're in Park Ward and we, we're
- 10:16next to the amazing Central Park for but a lot of our students
- 10:19don't you say come from Central Ward and in that area at the
- 10:23weekends there's not much available for them to do out
- 10:27there in green spaces. And some of the the meetings
- 10:30we've had along the way, we've live in sport and with the
- 10:32students have really highlighted the fact that there are enormous
- 10:35barriers to young people engaging in activities outside
- 10:40of outside of buildings that we hadn't even thought of.
- 10:44So they really have brought a unique and intelligent insight
- 10:48into the project and I think they've definitely steered it in
- 10:53a new direction that we wouldn't have have done so without their
- 10:56input. Yeah, and it's very important to
- 10:58involve the children, the youth from day one effectively.
- 11:02Brilliant stuff it needs to be. Driven by by those that you
- 11:06know. Students.
- 11:08Yeah, and that's from the bottom up I guess.
- 11:09Absolutely. Yeah.
- 11:10Instead of being, I suppose for once with a better phrase
- 11:13dictated to as to what they. Choose and assume yeah, what
- 11:16activities they want. Yeah, you tell us what you want
- 11:18and we'll try and make that happen.
- 11:20Brilliant stuff, right? We'll be chatting to Veronica
- 11:23and Annabelle from Thomas Deak Academy, two students who are
- 11:26very much involved in this project to get their fellow
- 11:31pupils moving and being more active in the city, and we'll be
- 11:35chatting to them very shortly. Good evening.
- 11:39Welcome back to the PCR Sport show here on PCR FM Thank you
- 11:44for joining us and if you haven't missed any of the show
- 11:46this evening, you can listen back to us online and you can
- 11:51find links on the PCRFM website or go through to the PCR Sports
- 11:57social media pages over the course of this weekend.
- 12:01Our guests this evening are Kelly Joyner, Lucy Payton from
- 12:07Living Sport, and also we've got students Veronica and Annabelle
- 12:10from Thomas Deakin Academy. We've been talking about how we
- 12:13can get Peterborough more active and utilizing the green spaces
- 12:17in our city and not just through taking part in sport.
- 12:20You know, you may perceive it to be football, cricket, rugby,
- 12:23netball, basketball, are those sorts of sports.
- 12:25It's just about moving, you know, how can we get you more
- 12:27active, potentially walking to the shops, not getting a lift
- 12:31and just getting yourself more attuned to your local
- 12:34environment. And just before the break, Lucy
- 12:37and Kelly gave us a great introduction into Living Sport
- 12:41and the The Place Partnership scheme that is currently in its
- 12:45infancy and being developed across the city by a number of
- 12:49partners that are involved in the project.
- 12:53And I'm pleased to say we've got two students, Veronica and
- 12:55Annabelle, joining us this evening as well, who are very
- 12:57much at the heart of this opportunity to get their peers,
- 13:02their school mates, their friends moving.
- 13:05And welcome to the show, Veronica and Annabelle.
- 13:08Thank. You for having.
- 13:11Us As you know, we are year 12 students at TVA studying sport
- 13:14and physical activity at A level.
- 13:16And we're involved in a sports place partnership run by Living
- 13:19Sport, aiming to increase participation in sport.
- 13:22As we've been involved in sport throughout our lives, we want to
- 13:25give people the same opportunities we had, to be more
- 13:28active and give them more opportunities in their life in
- 13:31general. Brilliant.
- 13:32So you obviously both love sport.
- 13:34Yeah. Favorite sport.
- 13:35OK. Football.
- 13:38And what position do you play hockey wise?
- 13:41Mid. Your mid OK, You've been playing
- 13:43a few years. Yeah.
- 13:44Who do you play for? I used to play for Born D Ping,
- 13:47Yeah. I'm hoping to get back into it
- 13:49again soon. OK, brilliant stuff.
- 13:51And you like your football, Veronica?
- 13:53Yeah. Do you play?
- 13:55I used to play center mid from Netherton, OK.
- 13:58Brilliant stuff. And do you support anybody
- 14:00football wise? Awesome.
- 14:04And you've been to see some of the women matches or just any of
- 14:06the men's matches? More the men's matches.
- 14:08More the men's matches, brilliant stuff.
- 14:09So you're very much enjoy sports, participating in it, but
- 14:13now you want to give other friends, students, the
- 14:17opportunity to get more active like you're like yourselves.
- 14:21Yeah, We just want to make them aware of what's going on in that
- 14:24area. They might not even know what
- 14:26opportunities that are around them.
- 14:29So we want to make sure that they know, so then they can go
- 14:32out and make new friends, experience the health benefits
- 14:35from it, and just make like lifelong habits to continue.
- 14:40Brilliant stuff. How are you doing that then,
- 14:42Veronica? What's what's involved?
- 14:44So we're going to carry out a pilot study to see what is
- 14:48stopping young people from participating in sporting people
- 14:53because we want everyone to have the same opportunity we've had
- 14:56growing up to be able to participate in all sorts of
- 14:59sport. OK, so it's very important to
- 15:01collect that evidence in the 1st place, isn't it?
- 15:03To then be able to build a picture up of how you can then
- 15:06support your fellow students. Yeah.
- 15:07So at the minute we're putting together some questions to go
- 15:11around the school and ask all the different forms so they can
- 15:14have an input on the. The activities, yeah, yeah.
- 15:19There's also they can do what they want to do.
- 15:22We don't. There's no point in running
- 15:23things that they don't want to attend, so we want to give them
- 15:25an input. So then there's things running
- 15:27they want to actually go to, so that's they've got the best
- 15:31opportunity really. Yeah, you've got more chance for
- 15:33buy in then, haven't you? If you've got, if you've got
- 15:35that evidence to say and then you can put a particular
- 15:37activity on for them, then they, they will attend.
- 15:40They, you know, hopefully they'll attend as well.
- 15:42Yeah. So we've really kind of made
- 15:44them kind of have the biggest input in it, really.
- 15:47So then they have what they want, yeah.
- 15:50Veronica, are you doing this for all age groups at TDA?
- 15:54Well, the questionnaire we're planning to do during form time
- 15:57is going to go from year 7 all the way to year 13 to make sure
- 16:01we've got a whole range of feelings from even younger
- 16:05children to older children to see what will really include
- 16:07everyone, not just a specific age group.
- 16:10Yeah, so that's all the way from 11 to 18, effectively.
- 16:12Yeah, Kelly was there talking about character, and it's not
- 16:18just about taking part in the activity, it just helps breed
- 16:21leaders participation within sport.
- 16:24How do you feel the character side of things is important for
- 16:27for what you're doing at the moment?
- 16:29Yeah, so our school character is kind of at the heart of
- 16:32everything really. They encourage it through like
- 16:35all like sorts of different things.
- 16:38And in sport especially, you develop all sorts of different
- 16:41characters and then they can like and put that into the rest
- 16:46of their lives as well. So it's not just trying to get
- 16:50them more active, but as well like benefiting them in all
- 16:54areas of their life so they can carry on those habits in the
- 16:57future in their jobs. Yeah, yeah.
- 17:00So for later life, effectively, yeah.
- 17:02And you know, if they go on to university or go straight into
- 17:05work at 18, for example, you've built up that character.
- 17:08And it gives them so many opportunities to socialise and
- 17:10build their social skills. So in the future when they meet
- 17:13new people, they've already had the exposure of meeting new
- 17:16people, it's going to be less daunting for them and just build
- 17:19their confidence really. Yep.
- 17:21Have you started the survey yet? Is it still in infancy?
- 17:24Putting it together, What's your sort of plan going forward with
- 17:27it at the moment? So far we've just presented the
- 17:30questions to Living Sport and then we've had the go ahead that
- 17:34we can now go ahead and ask those questions.
- 17:38So we're going to be doing that in the next couple of weeks.
- 17:40Yeah. They were absolutely amazing.
- 17:43You didn't just present it to. The in sport you.
- 17:45Presented it to a range of people in a big boardroom.
- 17:48Wow. Yeah, that shows character in
- 17:50itself, doesn't it? Yeah, you were.
- 17:52Fantastic. And you actually had a senior
- 17:54lecturer from ARU say how well you did, so please take that.
- 17:58I think she actually said that there were better than masters.
- 18:02Pay that credit, girls. So, you know, they had given it
- 18:06so much thought, so much position of what what can we get
- 18:09out of these questions? It's really, really valuable
- 18:11information. But you had all the sport
- 18:14coaches around, you know, it was, it was a daunting
- 18:17experience, but you handled it well and and we're being led by
- 18:20you. So it's amazing what you're.
- 18:21Doing and that's important, isn't it, that there is that
- 18:23input that we talked about before the break that the
- 18:25students, you know, the 11 to 18 year olds are actually listened
- 18:29to as to what they want and what would get them more active.
- 18:34And stages of the survey itself. You'll be going around each of
- 18:38the the forms effectively and collecting those results.
- 18:43Yeah. So we're going to plan to have
- 18:45two different questionnaires. One's going to be more of a
- 18:48multiple choice question which can be answered by everyone and
- 18:50anyone, and it's going to be more of a hands up type of
- 18:52question thing, so it will decrease levels of boredom so
- 18:57people would be more likely to answer truthfully.
- 18:59And then for school council, we're going to have a more open
- 19:02questionnaire where they will be more likely to expand on their
- 19:05answers and give us a more deeper view on what they think
- 19:09of sport and how to help them. OK, school council.
- 19:12What's the school council? Is it selected students that
- 19:17take part? So each year group has a student
- 19:20council which meet every week to discuss like various different
- 19:23topics about the school. So we'll be going and discussing
- 19:28it with each year group to get the more in depth answers.
- 19:31And then their multiple choice one will be to every single form
- 19:35from year 7 to year 13, so we can gather as much data as
- 19:39possible. Yep, and what's the time frame
- 19:41for having this survey completed?
- 19:43We're hoping by the end of next week.
- 19:45Wow, brilliant work. That'll be good.
- 19:49And so you'll get an impact and those results will be live
- 19:52effectively for you there, Lucy. Why?
- 19:53They've said next Friday, it's because we have an event
- 19:56planning meeting, OK. So our next step is, well, we've
- 20:00already planned that we want to because we want to deliver a
- 20:02program of activity. But before then, we're just
- 20:05doing a taste today. So the taste today at the moment
- 20:08is planned for Stanley Park. On the 20th of February in half
- 20:14term, yes. It's not far away.
- 20:17You know, it's a it's a test. Yeah.
- 20:19We're leaving it as an open event so that it's again testing
- 20:22rather than pre registering and having that barrier.
- 20:25It's just turn up, have a go. And they're presenting the
- 20:29results of the survey to the providers, the coaches and
- 20:33sports that are going to be there for the day, what the
- 20:37results are. But we've already, we've booked
- 20:40boxing. So we've got Top Yard boxing,
- 20:43we've got Lions Football Club, we've got Lions Rugby Club.
- 20:47Yeah. We've got built around fitness
- 20:51and delivering some fitness sessions.
- 20:54And we have archery by Grey Goose.
- 20:57I think that's it. Is it Kelly?
- 21:00I'm sure, I'm sure. If there's someone else I've
- 21:02missed, I'm sorry, I will. That later, so you've got six or
- 21:05seven activities taking part. We've got some activities
- 21:08already. Yeah, brilliant stuff.
- 21:10And Top Yard have certainly been on this show as well.
- 21:12So we we, we know the value that they provide in this city as
- 21:15well from that perspective. Very.
- 21:17Community LED, yeah, but also with the Lions Football Club.
- 21:20They've set up with Tom Top Yard in Queensgate and have the Roots
- 21:25and Rice Hub. So that's, you know, it's all,
- 21:27it's all, it's all relevant, it's all connecting and you
- 21:31know, we're all supporting to make this day happen.
- 21:34Girls, are you planning to join them on the day as well?
- 21:36Will you be down there? Will.
- 21:37Definitely be there to help and support, yeah.
- 21:40Brilliant stuff and encourage some of your fellow students and
- 21:43friends down to attend as well from the school no doubt.
- 21:46We actually haven't told them they are lazy activities.
- 21:48Okay, they do now. Now.
- 21:51Friday. Well, we'll be running them
- 21:53then. But it's important, isn't it,
- 21:55you know, in all seriousness, to get that feedback from students
- 22:00from 11 to 18 year olds, to be able to shape something that is
- 22:03of value to them and not just being dictated to for them.
- 22:06Absolutely. It has to be driven by them, you
- 22:08know, and if we were dealing with another cohorts and older,
- 22:11you have to speak to those that are involved so that we are
- 22:14getting a true reflection of what you need, what you want and
- 22:17you're more likely to do it. And yeah, that's where you're.
- 22:22Where you get that real participation levels, don't you
- 22:24as well, Yeah. And I think sometimes if you
- 22:26flip that narrative and imagine for a moment that we let youth
- 22:30put on activities for 70 year olds, but based on their own
- 22:34opinions. So they had 70 year olds doing
- 22:37skateboarding and. And.
- 22:39Beatboxing and kind of maybe they wouldn't really want to
- 22:43fully engage in that. So, and I think that quite often
- 22:46happens as an, as an adult who works with, has worked with
- 22:49children for many, many years, is that we impose our views on
- 22:53them and expect them to come along and, and to take part.
- 22:56And actually it is ridiculous when you think about that in
- 22:59reverse. So yeah, although I'm really
- 23:02good at beatboxing. Yeah, Can we have a demo?
- 23:07Demo put you on the spot right now?
- 23:10No, we'll save that for the day. Hilarious.
- 23:12But yeah, so you'll have to come to Stanley Park on the 20th and
- 23:15I will do a live beatbox for. You.
- 23:17There you go, girls. That's got to be enough to get
- 23:19you down there with you Lucy. The event itself, you've
- 23:24mentioned there 20th of February at Stanley Park and it's half
- 23:28term week, which is ideal from that perspective.
- 23:32It's open to the whole of the city, I guess, though it's not
- 23:34just, you know, those whole. City but it is aimed at 11 to 18
- 23:38years not that big enough for ID nothing but yeah that's that's
- 23:41the idea yeah like I say it's a bit risky keeping it open but
- 23:46like I say we're testing different ways to approach
- 23:48things yeah in a bit bit more sort of light hearted together
- 23:51within this way. And it's free.
- 23:53And it's free, which is really. Key to everybody being able to
- 23:58take part. Yeah, I think that's important,
- 24:00isn't it, girls, that it's free? It takes that barrier away.
- 24:03Doesn't it take part in an activity where you can go down
- 24:05with your friends for the morning or afternoon?
- 24:07Yeah, definitely. And as well, they can take part
- 24:11in a sport they might not have even known existed.
- 24:13And then they might be like, oh, I want to now do that all the
- 24:16time. And then they can really pick up
- 24:18a new hobby or something that they love.
- 24:21When did you start playing hockey?
- 24:22Sorry, just go back a few steps. I started when I was at primary
- 24:26school, OK? About 7 years old and what
- 24:28encouraged you to go into hockey at that point?
- 24:31Well, I started just playing in school, yeah, but then I really
- 24:33enjoyed it. See, I carried on.
- 24:36Yeah. See, it's important, isn't it,
- 24:38that children have that opportunity to take part in
- 24:41activities and relaxed. For a fucking way, yeah.
- 24:44With no pressure on them whatsoever, No.
- 24:45Club fees haven't got to join a. Club No.
- 24:47Buying equipment, yeah, kit and they, you know, it's just have a
- 24:51go, you know, and if, if a particular sport is is liked
- 24:56most, then we can look at, you know, supporting someone to set
- 24:59up a club or whatever. So it's, it's all it's testing
- 25:02how you're responding to those sorts of environments.
- 25:05But we'll say what can we grow from that?
- 25:08Yeah. Brilliant stuff, right?
- 25:10We'll be back with the girls very shortly.
- 25:11We're just going to take a few more messages and we'll be
- 25:13talking more about Living Sport and the activities they've got
- 25:17planned certainly for the 20th of February at Stanley Park.
- 25:21Good evening. Welcome back to the PCR Sports
- 25:23Show and thank you for joining us.
- 25:25We've only got literally what, 10-12 minutes left of tonight's
- 25:28show, but you can listen back to us.
- 25:30We'll be available on the Listen again button on the PCR FM
- 25:34website or if across our socials, we'll be putting a
- 25:38podcast link out across PCR Sports across the weekend.
- 25:42So please do listen back to this evening's show.
- 25:45We've been talking to Lucy Payton from Living Sport, who's
- 25:48the Peterborough Place lead, Kelly Joyner, the Community
- 25:52engagement lead from Thomas Deacon Academy.
- 25:54And we're very privileged to have also Veronica and
- 25:57Annabelle, 2 year 12 students from the school who are very
- 26:00much at the heart of the new project.
- 26:03And that's been put together by Living Sports and a number of
- 26:06other organizations across the city called the place a
- 26:09partnership. And it's all about making sure
- 26:12how we can get our youth, 11 to 18 year olds, moving more across
- 26:17the city, being more active and utilizing the green spaces in
- 26:21the city. And one of those ways will be an
- 26:23event that's coming up next month, 20th of February at
- 26:26Stanley Park, where there'll be 6 or 7 activities for children
- 26:32to take part in, including top yard boxing, the Lions, Rugby
- 26:35Club and football and archery, as well as a host of other
- 26:39sports. And the beauty of it is that
- 26:41they are all free to take part in.
- 26:44So if you're 11 to 18 and or if you've got a niece, nephew, or
- 26:48you've got a son or daughter to encourage them to attend.
- 26:51That's the 20th of February at Stanley Park here in the heart
- 26:55of our city. Girls.
- 26:58Annabelle, you were talking just off air there about the activity
- 27:02itself and yeah, you're very much enthused about this
- 27:05particular opportunity, aren't you?
- 27:06Yeah. I think when people think of
- 27:09sport, a lot of the time they think of competitive nurse at
- 27:12competition, especially when you see it on TV and things.
- 27:16But it's not just about that. It's about the fun, the
- 27:18engagement or the opportunities people get from it.
- 27:22And that's really what's behind this.
- 27:23It's not who's like, it's not about the competitiveness, it's
- 27:27about the fun and what people can really get out of
- 27:30participating in sport. Yep, it's encouraging your peers
- 27:33to come along, isn't it? 11 to 18 year olds and getting
- 27:35that message out there. Yeah, so then they can pick up
- 27:38the lifelong habits and continue it later in life.
- 27:41Yep, we talked about character as well, Veronica.
- 27:44That's, you know, a very important part of this
- 27:47particular project. Well, if, if they come to some
- 27:51events that we're going to have, then they will have to learn how
- 27:54to be, how to show courtesy to each other because they will
- 27:58have to show good sportsmanship. They can't just think it's all
- 28:00about them. They will have to share.
- 28:02They'll have to learn each other's cultures and embrace
- 28:05everything they've learned throughout the events.
- 28:08That's brilliant. That is Lucy exciting event next
- 28:11month. Yes, it is.
- 28:13Might say we've got a duplicate one in witching as well.
- 28:15But just to confirm you've said shared it.
- 28:17Thank you very much. It hasn't gone out public.
- 28:19It will be on Monday. The timing is a 1:50.
- 28:22It's a four hour event. You can just turn up for an hour
- 28:25and have a have a have a go or you say the whole time, bring a
- 28:27packed lunch, bring you bottle of water and there'll be sort of
- 28:31like a presentation at the end. But it's it's it's it's
- 28:34hopefully it's gonna be a really good, great day.
- 28:36We've booked. The weather, it's definitely
- 28:39sunny and dry. Yeah, it's not.
- 28:40It's not the best. Of a year to.
- 28:42Have an outdoor event, but you know, let's go with the flow.
- 28:46It's an opportunity isn't it? You've and then the girls are,
- 28:49you know, putting in some really good work within TDA, you know,
- 28:53amongst their form classes, you know, 11 to 18 year olds and you
- 28:57know, being able to have an event in literally what, 4 weeks
- 29:01just shows them the appetite for it.
- 29:03Yeah. And, you know, that's something
- 29:05we appreciate and it's, it's special.
- 29:08You know, it's a different way of approaching something.
- 29:10And if it works then we can replicate it in in other areas.
- 29:13Yep, or tweak it if it doesn't quite work on the day itself
- 29:16Learning. That's all.
- 29:17Yeah, that's what it's all. About and this is very much this
- 29:19place partnership is in its infancy and it's about testing
- 29:22and learning and taking the opportunities and listening to
- 29:25to the 11 to 18 year olds it certainly.
- 29:28Is, yeah. Kelly, you work with the.
- 29:31I say work with Veronica and Annabelle are 24 but you must be
- 29:38proud of the the 2 girls here. Amazing.
- 29:40I said it earlier, didn't I, about I'm sharing the character
- 29:42that we have in the building with the local community.
- 29:45And they just, I'll never leave working at Thomas Deacon Academy
- 29:50because I get to do this every day and work with these guys
- 29:52every day. And they just surprise and
- 29:55inspire me. And they're just incredible
- 29:58groups of people that I'm I'm an absolutely privileged to work
- 30:02with. Yeah.
- 30:02And I just know I've. We've got the future Prime
- 30:05Minister within our world, and I am kind of setting myself up for
- 30:10having a group of amazing people going out doing amazing things,
- 30:13so when I'm in my old age, they can all come back.
- 30:17Yeah, exactly that. Yeah.
- 30:18It's a very, you know, personal thing for me.
- 30:20But yeah, they are incredible. And Veronica and Annabella, no
- 30:23doubt just representing the school here as well because, you
- 30:26know, yeah, fellow pupils. So the.
- 30:27Whole year 12 cohort of this sports development have been
- 30:31involved in the project along the way and they've all taken
- 30:35part and they're all picking up different aspects of the place.
- 30:38Partnership and the commitment that they've shown to it has
- 30:41been absolutely incredible. Going off and doing things in
- 30:44their own time and making sure that that the things that are
- 30:47needed to happen have happened in a timely manner and they're
- 30:50just incredible. Yep, may not be Prime Minister,
- 30:54could be a hockey player. Annabelle representing Great
- 30:56Britain at the Olympics. In future years, Maybe what's
- 31:04next for living sport? You've got this activity coming
- 31:06up. It's very much this project at
- 31:08the moment, but what's what's ahead for living sport?
- 31:11So these are, you know, 2 stand alone pilots.
- 31:14So these are separate in their own identity.
- 31:20The bigger piece of work we have had.
- 31:24So at the moment I have over 200 contacts on it, like a
- 31:27distribution list, keeping people informed of what we're
- 31:31learning, you know, how things look.
- 31:34And actually we've had two wider partner events, one to shape
- 31:40together what the common purpose is, what the vision looks like,
- 31:44what the mission looks like, what values do we need to align
- 31:47to. And then we held a year on event
- 31:51to discuss parks and and children's activity.
- 31:57A lot of learning came out of it, but it is very, very clear
- 32:04that my next step is rather than just sending an e-mail to
- 32:08distribution list, is actually creating a network.
- 32:12So creating a safe place for everyone that is involved or has
- 32:19an invested interest in activity to come together.
- 32:23Share good practice, share learning to tackle equalities
- 32:27together, look for solutions together and shape what that
- 32:31network, being a member of that network could bring, what
- 32:35benefits it could bring. So that's launching next week
- 32:37with an event planned for March, April time to actually structure
- 32:44what people want from that network.
- 32:47We know that a lot of sport clubs apply for small grants and
- 32:51things. Where, where do they get their
- 32:53data from? What, where, where can they go
- 32:56for some development opportunities?
- 32:59You know, what do we want from coming together to be stronger?
- 33:03We always talk about on this show, volunteers integral to
- 33:07clubs, organisations, yeah. And that's something again,
- 33:12you're looking to develop in in time.
- 33:14Within Living Sports as well, we are, but you know, volunteer
- 33:18capacity to, to, to recruit and retain volunteers.
- 33:24It's a big issue for all charities and I've seen it over
- 33:27many, many years. But that's a big thing that
- 33:30we're looking to explore and develop within Living Sports to
- 33:33give those opportunities, whether that could be in the
- 33:37shape of sort of the move more type ambassador role.
- 33:40So that we've got lots of people dotted around in all ages trying
- 33:44to promote that. What we've just been talking
- 33:46about the the change of behaviour.
- 33:48So it's something, you know, Living Sport are a charity,
- 33:52volunteers will strengthen that voice and amplify it.
- 33:56And and that's, that's one of the next steps, yeah.
- 34:00It's important to have those ambassadors within communities.
- 34:02Isn't it all from within? Yeah, yeah.
- 34:04And with these two test and then pilots, the central and
- 34:08Wittering, we are working with people that wouldn't have had
- 34:12this opportunity, wouldn't have, you know, residents even having
- 34:15a voice of like, please don't use this part because it's this
- 34:18and the other. We you have to listen to all
- 34:20angles. And I will say with Stanley
- 34:23Park, which is quite, quite surprising.
- 34:25When we first came to see the students at Thomas Deacon and we
- 34:28mentioned Stanley Park and they were very apprehensive because
- 34:32of the safety implications. So obviously that means that we
- 34:35need to look at talking to police and, and you know, so
- 34:38there's a lot of sort of rippling effects from the things
- 34:42we're finding out, but it's all good.
- 34:43Well, it's important, isn't it? As you know, this survey and the
- 34:46feedback that you get from students will shape.
- 34:49Yeah, it's showing us. Trends it's showing us, themes
- 34:51it's showing us highlighting things that we may not have even
- 34:54thought about. So, you know, it's all great
- 34:56work. Brilliant stuff.
- 34:58Well, thank you for joining us, Lucy Kelly, Annabelle.
- 35:01Veronica, Thank you. Wonderful stuff.
- 35:04Are you playing hockey tomorrow, Annabelle?
- 35:06No, no game tomorrow. No.
- 35:07Arsenal got a game this weekend. Veronica.
- 35:10No, it's quite sporting weekend, isn't it?
- 35:14Brilliant stuff. Well all the best for the event
- 35:17on the 20th of February. Thank you.
- 35:19And if they want to get hold of you, just go through to the
- 35:21Living Sport website and contact details are on there you can.
- 35:24Actually find me on the, you know, you meet the staff, so
- 35:25it's got my personal e-mail on that or my work e-mail on there.
- 35:28Say anything. If you've got any involvement or
- 35:31any interest, any skills, anything you want to offer,
- 35:34anything to do with movement in Peterborough, let me know.
- 35:39Lucy's the person to speak to. Brilliant.
- 35:42Thank you for coming in this evening girls, very much
- 35:45appreciated. Wishing you all the best with
- 35:47the survey to get that all done in the next week or so and look
- 35:51forward to hearing more about the event on the 20th of
- 35:52February at Stanley Park, which is between 10:00 and 2:00 PM
- 35:56Thank you. Right, well, that's the end of
- 36:00another PCR Sports show here on PCR FM Thank you for your
- 36:04company. Next week we're going to be live
- 36:07from the Turbines Tavern at Peterborough Sports and we'll be
- 36:11catching up on all things Peterborough sports related and
- 36:14hopefully they'll be able to continue their recent good form
- 36:18and pick up another vital 3 points in on their trip to
- 36:22Chorley, which is tomorrow afternoon in a three PM kick
- 36:26off. Thank you for your time.
- 36:28As I say, if you can listen back to us, our links will be across
