- 0:00Hey everybody, this is your GM, your back row
- 0:01dominance, your GM who currently is not on the
- 0:03team right now, but don't you worry about it.
- 0:04Kale here to bring you episode 18 of the stack
- 0:06and shed series. Now in this series, we're covering
- 0:09all 32 teams. So everybody gets a chance to be
- 0:12talked about. All right. Now in this series,
- 0:14we're covering a few different topics and they
- 0:15include what went wrong. What do they need stack
- 0:19or shed? their draft picks, one move I would
- 0:22do in their cap space. And right now in this
- 0:24episode, we're talking about the Panthers. So
- 0:26let's go to Garner's. Let's get those hush puppies.
- 0:28Let's get a barbecue sandwich with the coleslaw
- 0:30on top of it. Let's get some sweet tea and let's
- 0:33talk about some football. All right, let's get
- 0:42into it. So what went wrong in the Panthers season?
- 0:44And I would venture to say it was stagnant quarterback
- 0:46play and offensive production. Although the offense
- 0:50showed flashes of their potential, the weight
- 0:52of stagnant play brought them back to reality.
- 0:54From Bryce Young struggling to maintain a rhythm
- 0:57to the persistent offensive setbacks, this past
- 1:00season left me with more questions than answers
- 1:02about the direction, growth, and ceiling of this
- 1:05offense. When comparing the 24 offense to the
- 1:0825 offense, we only see minimal improvements.
- 1:11According to NFL Pro, The Panthers were 29th
- 1:15in offense and they averaged 20 .1 points per
- 1:18game, 298 yards per game, 5 .1 yards per play,
- 1:22and 40 touchdowns. They were 30th in passing
- 1:24offense and they averaged 187 .5 passing yards
- 1:28per game, 5 .5 passing yards per play, and 22
- 1:31passing touchdowns. They were 18th in rushing
- 1:33offense and they averaged 110 .5 rushing yards
- 1:37per game, 4 .6 rushing yards per play, 18 rushing
- 1:40touchdowns, and had 40 rushes of 10 plus yards.
- 1:43However, last year the Panthers were 27th in
- 1:46offense and they averaged 18 .3 points per game,
- 1:49295 .6 yards per game, 5 yards per play, and
- 1:5333 touchdowns. They were 26th in passing offense
- 1:56and they averaged 179 .3 passing yards per game,
- 2:005 .5 passing yards per play, and 24 passing touchdowns.
- 2:03They were 19th in rushing offense and they averaged
- 2:06116 .3 rushing yards per game, 4 .3 rushing yards
- 2:10per play, 9 rushing touchdowns, and have 45 rushes
- 2:13of 10 plus yards or more. Regardless if you think
- 2:16their struggles are tied to coaching, roster
- 2:18building, or meddling ownership, the Panthers
- 2:21are once again at a crossroads between moving
- 2:23forward with Bryce Young or hitting the reset
- 2:26button again. And while Bryce Young went toe
- 2:28-to -toe with the Rams and almost made the playoffs,
- 2:31his growth plateaued as he was unable to overcome
- 2:34his struggles. Now I'm not saying he had a bad
- 2:36year, but I think Bryce Young had flashy performances
- 2:39instead of an extended body of work. showing
- 2:42that he's developing in the right way. When we
- 2:44compare some of his better performances to his
- 2:47worst performances, it clearly shows a quarterback
- 2:49who's stalled. For example, when Bryce Young
- 2:51went against the Rams in week 13, he was 20 attempts
- 2:55for 15 completions, 206 passing yards, 3 touchdowns,
- 2:5910 .3 yards per attempt, and a 75 % completion
- 3:02percentage. But when he faced the Seahawks, however,
- 3:04he was 24 attempts for 14 completions, 54 passing
- 3:08yards, 1 interception, 2 .3 yards, When he faced
- 3:14the Cowboys, he was 25 attempts for 17 completions,
- 3:17199 passing yards, 3 touchdowns, 1 interception,
- 3:218 yards per attempt, and a 68 % completion percentage.
- 3:24When he faced the Falcons, he was 45 attempts
- 3:27for 31 completions, 448 passing yards, 3 touchdowns,
- 3:3110 yards per attempt, and a 68 .9 completion
- 3:34percentage. Now, I understand every quarterback
- 3:36is going to have their highs and lows throughout
- 3:38the season. But when we talk about Bryce Young,
- 3:40we're not talking about him in a way where he's
- 3:43either growing or declining, but instead somebody
- 3:46that is stalling. Now with that being said, what
- 3:49do the Panthers need? And that is more offensive
- 3:51production and progressive quarterback play.
- 3:53At this moment, I believe the Panthers have a
- 3:55top 15 to maybe 20 offense that has the upside
- 3:58to be better depending on their additions and
- 4:00coaching adjustments. For example, if they started
- 4:04to scheme Xavier Leguette, Tep McMillan, and
- 4:06Tommy Trimble in a way where they can attack
- 4:08the soft coverages and defenses while creating
- 4:11mismatches, then maybe we'll see a better result.
- 4:14Now, as far as the quarterback play, that's a
- 4:16little tricky because that requires a coaching
- 4:18adjustment. And when I mean coaching adjustment,
- 4:20I mean scheming up a game plan that works with
- 4:23Bryce Young's skill set. I don't know about y
- 4:25'all, and I would love to hear what Panthers
- 4:26fans have to say about this, so let me know on
- 4:29our YouTube at footballjunkiespod, footballjunkiespod,
- 4:33on our Instagram at football underscore junkiespod,
- 4:36football underscore junkiespod, and on our TikTok
- 4:40at footballjunkiespod. Football Junkies pod if
- 4:43you think Dave Canales is trying to fit Bryce
- 4:46Young into the Baker Mayfield mold. And when
- 4:48I mean the Baker Mayfield mold, I mean curating
- 4:51a game plan that worked for Baker Mayfield instead
- 4:54of Bryce Young. Bryce Young is not a gunslinger
- 4:57like how Baker Mayfield is. Instead, Bryce Young
- 5:00is a mobile quarterback who can push the ball
- 5:01down the field, not only with his arm, but with
- 5:04his legs. Now, with that being said, the question
- 5:07we all need to ask ourselves is stack or shed?
- 5:09And I will eventually say stack. And the reason
- 5:11why I say that is because the Panthers were close
- 5:14to making the playoffs and they held their own
- 5:16against the Packers and Rams. That signals to
- 5:18me that this team is one to two off seasons away
- 5:21from being competitors. And with the division
- 5:24being... open, I think this is the perfect opportunity
- 5:27for the Panthers to state their claim and make
- 5:29this division theirs for years to come. Looking
- 5:32at their draft picks, they have their first,
- 5:34second, third, fourth, two -fifths, and a sixth.
- 5:37Now, I wonder what position will the Panthers
- 5:40target first? Because Dan Morgan didn't rule
- 5:42out taking another wide receiver in the first
- 5:44round. Now, we all know we're in the smokescreen
- 5:47phase of the pre -draft, so we can't always believe
- 5:49what GMs, coaches, owners, and even insiders
- 5:52say. But according to CBS sports writer Shana
- 5:55McCarriston, which I will put the link of her
- 5:57article in the description of this episode, the
- 5:59Panthers have brought in A .J. Halsey, safety
- 6:01from LSU, Daquan Wright tied in from Ole Miss,
- 6:05Oscar Delp tied in from Georgia. Kalen Black,
- 6:08running back from Indiana. Travis Burke, offensive
- 6:11tackle from Memphis. Casey Concepcion, wide receiver
- 6:14from Texas A &M. Jalen Kilgore, defensive back
- 6:17from South Carolina. Chris McCullen, defensive
- 6:20tackle from Missouri. Tyler Onyenem, defensive
- 6:22tackle from Texas A &M. Trayden Stukes, quarterback
- 6:25from Arizona. Haynes King, quarterback from Georgia
- 6:28Tech. Chase Besantis, guard from Texas A &M.
- 6:31Dominique Orange, defensive tackle from Iowa
- 6:34State. Justin Jolly, tight end from NC State.
- 6:37Denzel Boston, wide receiver from Washington,
- 6:39Gerard McCoy, quarterback from Tennessee, Nick
- 6:42Barrett, defensive tackle from South Carolina,
- 6:44Kerryon Crawford, defensive end from Auburn,
- 6:47Max Ihanichor, offensive tackle from Arizona
- 6:49State, Deion Burks, wide receiver from Oklahoma,
- 6:53Diego Pava, quarterback from Vanderbilt, Omar
- 6:56Cooper, wide receiver from Indiana, and Barron
- 6:58Morton, quarterback from Texas Tech. By having
- 7:01the 19th pick in the first round, the Panthers
- 7:04are in range to take Denzel Boston, Concepcion
- 7:07and or Omar Cooper if they're serious about it.
- 7:09But outside of wide receiver, I think safety,
- 7:12corner, tight end, defensive tackle, and quarterback
- 7:15are all positions the Panthers can target. Now
- 7:17the one move that I would do, which they've already
- 7:20done, is pick up Bryce Young's fifth year option.
- 7:23Although he had a better season, I still believe
- 7:26he's unproven and needs to show more consistency.
- 7:29I'd rather hold off on paying him than having
- 7:31to pay market value and then you're having buyer's
- 7:34remorse. Because according to Spotrack, his market
- 7:36value is a three -year $111 .4 million deal,
- 7:41which is $37 .2 million a year. And with the
- 7:44possibility of the 27 draft class being loaded
- 7:47at quarterback, I'd rather keep my options open
- 7:50than handcuffing myself to Bryce Young. Looking
- 7:52at their cap situation, they have $3 .1 million,
- 7:55which isn't a lot right now. But I expect for
- 7:58them to make some minor adjustments in somebody's
- 8:00contract just so they can have more than enough
- 8:02money to sign their entire rookie class. But
- 8:05let's see what the future holds. But I'm going
