- 0:00Daughters of Jacob, the wife of Judah Tamar Potiphar's wife.
- 0:04Estonia, that we have some fabulous women, great women of
- 0:07faith and great women of not so much faith.
- 0:11But let's start in Genesis 34 with this difficult young girl,
- 0:14Dinah. She's the 7th child of Jacob and
- 0:17Leah. She is the only named daughter.
- 0:20We can't just skip over her. We don't know if the story is an
- 0:24abduction, if she was consenting to a future marriage.
- 0:28The word that's used in Hebrew to refer to these daughters of
- 0:31Jacob, comforting him may have been his birth daughters, may
- 0:35have been his granddaughters, or may have been his daughters in
- 0:39law because there were many by this time.
- 0:43So we're a little bit unsure as to who they were.
- 0:45And as we look at other ancient texts.
- 0:52Hello, welcome back to Scripture Central.
- 0:54I'm Lynn Hilton Wilson, part of the team that tries to build
- 0:57enduring faith in Jesus Christ by illuminating and defending
- 1:02our scriptures. And today we get to look at
- 1:04Genesis 37 to 41. As part of my commentary, I like
- 1:10to focus on the handmaidens, the harems, the heroines.
- 1:13And we've got 7 fabulous women in these chapters.
- 1:17Actually, we skip a couple chapters between last week's
- 1:20Come Follow me lesson in this, and I do not want to skip Dinah.
- 1:25So she's in Genesis 34. I'm going to go to talk about
- 1:28her a little bit and then we'll move on to the daughters of
- 1:31Jacob, the wife of Judah, Tamar Potiphar's wife, Estenia.
- 1:36That we have some fabulous women, great women of faith and
- 1:40great women of not so much faith I want to cover today.
- 1:44But let's start in Genesis 34 with this difficult young girl,
- 1:47Dinah. She's the 7th child of Jacob and
- 1:50Leah. She is the only named daughter.
- 1:52We can't just skip over her. And we also in her stories are
- 1:56introduced with other daughters of Jacob and daughters of the
- 2:00land. So they'll just slip in right to
- 2:03her story, all from Genesis 34. She was probably a teenager when
- 2:07Jacob settled in Canaan. He's settling near the Hivites.
- 2:10He's just adjacent to the city that is later called the city of
- 2:13Shechem. But Jacob buys a field from the
- 2:17locals. He puts up his tents and and
- 2:19begins building an altar. He calls the name El Elo Israel,
- 2:24possibly meaning, you know, mighty is the God of Israel.
- 2:28It's a beautiful name. And we get this tragic story.
- 2:32We don't know if the story is an abduction, if she was consenting
- 2:36to a future marriage, but we do know that our marriages were
- 2:40arranged and that hers was not arranged by her father.
- 2:44And this was very difficult. So we're told in Genesis 34 that
- 2:49Dinah goes out to visit the other girls, the locals, and
- 2:53while she's there, the Prince of the king.
- 2:58And these are small little towns.
- 3:00It's probably closer to look at it as the mayor of the village
- 3:03or something. But one of the leaders of the
- 3:04neighboring community really is smitten by her and sleeps with
- 3:09her, defiles her, but she does not come home.
- 3:14By the time we get to the end of the Old Testament, you're an
- 3:16adult at 12 1/2. And at the age 12, you're no
- 3:20longer a minor. And so the idea that if she is
- 3:25out on her own visiting with the girls in the land, she It may
- 3:29have been a consensual future marriage.
- 3:33But it doesn't sound like the brothers thought that.
- 3:36And as soon as Jacob finds out that his beloved little 7th
- 3:42child of Leah is has been abused, he awaits to talk to his
- 3:48sons. And they act rashly and they act
- 3:53in a way that Jacob is upset about and does not know.
- 3:57And most of you know the story. He says we can't marry you
- 4:00because you're not our faith. You don't have, you are not
- 4:04circumcised. And so the brothers arranged to
- 4:06have everyone in this village circumcised.
- 4:10And sure enough, as the men are in excruciating pain and we have
- 4:15examples of circumcision from very, very ancient texts and
- 4:19artwork and elsewhere, but verse 24 of Section 34 reads all the
- 4:25men who went out to the city gate and listen to Hamar and his
- 4:29son Shechem, and every male of the city was circumcised.
- 4:33So they all agree that they'd like to work with Jacob and his
- 4:37family that like to become neighbors.
- 4:40And they're willing to go through this in order to have
- 4:43the marriages between the two of them.
- 4:45But unfortunately, two of the brothers, at least the second
- 4:50son of Leah Simeon, and the third son, Levi, are absolutely
- 4:55dishonest. I believe it is premeditated
- 4:58murder that leads them to go into the city and kill all of
- 5:03the men who are suffering from their circumcisions.
- 5:06You know, this was a very fatal chance for an an adult male at
- 5:11this time about 50% fatality is one of the books that I read on
- 5:15this. But it it is not an easy thing.
- 5:17And this was excruciatingly difficult to continue on reading
- 5:21what Simeon and Levi do. But it says in verse 29 some
- 5:26sort of kidnapping and ransacking.
- 5:28It says all the little ones and they spoiled even that was left
- 5:32in the house. So the wives and the little
- 5:34ones. So these daughters that had
- 5:36befriended Dinah have now had to watch not only the murder of
- 5:41their brothers and fathers and boyfriends, but now they're also
- 5:47being abducted, is what the text says.
- 5:49Now, I do not know if this is literal or edited afterward, but
- 5:55it is absolutely tragic. And Jacob, the patriarch, voices
- 6:00his anger at his sons. And he says, you know, even even
- 6:04the neighbors are going to think we stink.
- 6:06You know, it's not just their what it did to them, but the
- 6:09entire community is going to have a problem now.
- 6:13So that is a tragic story. We do not hear any more about
- 6:17what happened to all the other people of the village who were
- 6:20abducted and taken, these little ones and the wives.
- 6:23Nor are we told what happened to the girls, nor are we told how
- 6:26Dinah reacted. But the thing that is strange to
- 6:29me, the reason why I even paused to say it wasn't just a
- 6:32kidnapping or a rape, is because Dinah was stayed in the House of
- 6:38Shechem during all these arrangements.
- 6:41Dinah never comes out to talk to her dad.
- 6:44Dinah never comes out earlier when the men are being
- 6:48circumcised. She doesn't take that
- 6:49opportunity to run home to her parents.
- 6:53Now, perhaps, as often is the case in the ancient world, she
- 6:58was too scared, she was too threatened, and she couldn't
- 7:02act. I don't know.
- 7:04But once the older brothers came after the three days after the
- 7:08circumcision, after all the time is when she's finally brought
- 7:11home. So we have a lot of questions on
- 7:14this story, and it is tragic to see good people doing very bad
- 7:21things. None of us are ever released
- 7:24from having anger take over. So I'd like to move on now to
- 7:29our next account. There's another line, though,
- 7:31that's interesting. In this account of Genesis 34
- 7:34about the daughters of Jacob, There's multiple daughters.
- 7:38Would you please marry in and out with us?
- 7:40So it appears that not only in this account in 34, but then
- 7:44also when Joseph is assumed to be killed by his father, we
- 7:48learned more about other daughters of Jacob who come to
- 7:51comfort him. So, you know, we have a lot of
- 7:53information on the sons of Jacob, but we only have a couple
- 7:56of references to these daughters of Jacob.
- 7:59So as we continue on in Genesis 37, the story evolves about
- 8:03Joseph being sold into Egypt. And then the brother, you know,
- 8:06Reuben tries to protect him, Judah tries to sell him and he's
- 8:10sold to captain of the guard, Pharaoh's household.
- 8:13And then the brothers come up with an another atrocious story
- 8:17about a vicious animal has devoured him.
- 8:19Now Joseph is 17 years old when he begins this work and Jacob is
- 8:25absolutely devastated with the news of the loss of his son.
- 8:29And in Genesis 37, verse 33 and the BSB translation it reads it
- 8:34is my son's robe. A vicious animal has devoured
- 8:37him. Joseph has surely been torn to
- 8:40pieces and in response to his sorrow his daughters come.
- 8:45And in verse 35, the NIV reads, all his sons and daughters came
- 8:50to comfort him, but he refused to be comforted.
- 8:54You know, Jacob was absolutely in a horrific place, but the
- 8:58word that's used in Hebrew to refer to these daughters of
- 9:01Jacob, comforting him, may have been his birth daughters, may
- 9:05have been his granddaughters, or may have been his daughters in
- 9:10law because there were many by this time.
- 9:13So we're a little bit unsure as to who they were.
- 9:15And as we look at other ancient texts, these are much later than
- 9:20the Bible. But Josephus by the time of the
- 9:22New Testament claims that there were other daughters.
- 9:25The Testament of the 12th patriarch named the four
- 9:28daughters. We've got the Tarragon of
- 9:31Jonathan that also claimed that these daughters.
- 9:33So we have extra biblical sources also saying Jacob had
- 9:37other daughters. The next woman in our text is in
- 9:40Genesis 38 verses 2 through 5 and 12.
- 9:44And we learned that as Judah moved away from his parents home
- 9:48and he married a Canaanite woman and she was the daughter of
- 9:52Shua. So the daughter of Shua in
- 9:54Hebrew is Bashua. So sometimes she goes by Bashua
- 9:58and sometimes she goes by the unnamed daughter of Shua.
- 10:01But she was able to bear Judah three sons who lived to an older
- 10:05age, three sons of marriageable age.
- 10:07Remember, most women started bearing children very early, but
- 10:10lost most of their children in the first year of life and then
- 10:14at least another third by the time they were 10 years old, is
- 10:19what the anthropologist suggest about the ancient world.
- 10:23So the idea that she had three sons, that we know their names,
- 10:26we know their story, does not mean she only had three sons.
- 10:30But her oldest son, Eyre, died shortly after his marriage to
- 10:35Tamar. That's Genesis 38, seven.
- 10:38And so in that day and age, they had the law, the Leverett law,
- 10:43where if your wife died, then the next son was to marry her,
- 10:47take care of her and raise up seed for the inheritance of his
- 10:52older brother. But that is not what happened in
- 10:55this story. And that causes all the problem.
- 10:57Tamar becomes very careful to live this law.
- 11:00And in fact, she she goes to an extreme that's hard to believe,
- 11:03but she is fulfilling this law literally.
- 11:06So when the second son, Onan was not willing to follow all the
- 11:11way through and raise seed, he was willing to almost go all the
- 11:14way, but not quite enough to raise seed.
- 11:17And so he passed away. The Bible says the Lord killed
- 11:20him. You know, that's interpretation
- 11:22I don't know if I agree with, but the youngest son, Jacob said
- 11:28he's too young, you can't marry him yet.
- 11:30Now, Tamar may have only been a few years older than him.
- 11:33You know, usually the girl is younger than the husband, but
- 11:36whatever his age is, I think it's because Jacob is worried
- 11:39that Tamar is killing his sons. If you want to learn more about
- 11:43this love, right, marriage is described in Deuteronomy chapter
- 11:4625, verses 5 through 10. And it says there, as well as in
- 11:50the places where it's written out in more detail outside of
- 11:54the Bible, biblical texts that are the held by the Jews as
- 11:57sacred literature, that if the brothers do not fulfill their
- 12:01duty, the father-in-law may one time fulfill the duty.
- 12:05As we continue on, we learn a little bit more about Judah's
- 12:08wife in Genesis 38, verses 2 through 5.
- 12:13And we learn that after her oldest two sons died, she also
- 12:17passes away. And Judah goes through a time of
- 12:19mourning. And then he decides to go out
- 12:21with one of his friends to to a sheep shearing experience.
- 12:26And as he's there, he and his friend are in a new place, not
- 12:31near where they're used, where they're known.
- 12:33And Judah approaches a woman who he thinks is a prostitute.
- 12:39Now, actually, Tamar had found out where he was going.
- 12:42She found out what was happening.
- 12:45She knows that he's scared of her.
- 12:47She also knows that that third son is plenty old to procreate
- 12:50right now. And Judah has not given him to
- 12:53Tamar. So she puts herself in a
- 12:56position to fulfill the love right marriage with her
- 13:00father-in-law, Judah. And she disguises herself.
- 13:04In fact, I'm going to read from the NIV.
- 13:06This is verses 15 to 19. When Judas saw her, he thought
- 13:11she was a prostitute for she had covered her face.
- 13:16So at that time and that place, prostitutes covered their face.
- 13:19What will you give me to sleep with you?
- 13:21And the conversation goes on and and Tamar says if you can't give
- 13:25me the goat right now, you've got to give me something right
- 13:27now. Give me a pledge, she says.
- 13:31And he says, OK, I'll give you my staff.
- 13:32A few other things, you know. So she follows through.
- 13:36She has his staff, she has his dependent.
- 13:39They come to an agreement and Tamar becomes pregnant.
- 13:44After she left, she goes back home.
- 13:46She puts takes off the prostitute veil, she puts on her
- 13:49widow's clothing again. And three months later Judah
- 13:53finds out that Tamar is expecting and he comes out and
- 13:57he says that she should be killed.
- 13:59In fact, Genesis 3824 to 26 says bring her out and have her
- 14:06burned to death. But Tamar then says I am
- 14:11pregnant by the man whose staff this is.
- 14:14See if you recognize who seal and cord and staff these are.
- 14:20Of no course Judah recognizes them immediately and says she is
- 14:24more righteous than I. Now this double standard for men
- 14:28and women is wrong and Jesus himself denounces it.
- 14:32But right now Tamar has trapped Judah and he apologizes and he
- 14:38willingly takes ownership of these babies and she has twins.
- 14:42And it appears to me that they are a little premature because
- 14:46the first one slips his arm out and Zara, they put a a red
- 14:52scarlet tie on it. But that is very unusual in full
- 14:56term babies, as I used to work in labor and delivery as a
- 14:59nurse, and that is usually for premature deliveries.
- 15:02But both sons are born. Both sons live.
- 15:06Perez and Zara and Tamar's posterity through these two sons
- 15:11is not only recorded in Genesis, but also in the book of Ruth and
- 15:14the book of Chronicles and then in the New Testament in the
- 15:17Gospel of Matthew. Tamar is the line through which
- 15:21our Savior adopted Father Joseph.
- 15:25His lineage comes through. So we have this 800 year period
- 15:29between her delivery and the time that we get down to King
- 15:33David. But she is the ancestor of
- 15:36David. She is an important figure and
- 15:39why do we have her? Even in the important genealogy
- 15:43of our righteous Joseph, I think we have very unusual situations,
- 15:52in part to parallel with the unusual situation of Mary and
- 15:56Joseph also as types of Christ, as those who are preparing the
- 16:02way for the Savior of the world. The next two women I'd like to
- 16:06speak about are Potiphar's wife and Anna.
- 16:09So welcome back to Egypt. We're now, I'm probably the 15th
- 16:12dynasty. I'm not exactly sure if we're
- 16:15talking about the haikus dynasty here, these foreign Semite
- 16:18rulers who are called the shepherd kings, but it appears
- 16:22to possibly fit into this time period, whether it's the 15th or
- 16:26the 16th dynasty. I don't know whether it's the
- 16:2917th or the 18th, but give us between 1700 and and 15 100 and
- 16:35we are in the Egyptian of the Bible and the Haikos dynasty.
- 16:42I personally feel like the reason why many biblical
- 16:46scholars appreciate the overlap with Joseph coming down to Egypt
- 16:51and the Haikos dynasty is because they would have both
- 16:55been foreign rulers and it makes a little bit more sense
- 16:59regardless of which dynasty we're in and who's our rulers.
- 17:02I'd like to talk about Genesis 39 the the wife of Potiphar.
- 17:06She's one of the most famous adulteresses in Old Testament.
- 17:10But this wife of Potiphar had a very influential sphere because
- 17:15of her powerful husband. As we read through the Genesis
- 17:18account, Joseph is described as hard working, intelligent.
- 17:22You know, he's he's bilingual, she's reading and writing in
- 17:25multiple languages. He's very successful.
- 17:27He's well built, he's handsome. And it sounds as if she is
- 17:33beguiling him at least twice. So somewhere between the age of
- 17:3717 and 27, according to Genesis 37 to 41.
- 17:41We get his ages there. And all of this is on my hand,
- 17:44out and on my slides if you're watching.
- 17:46But for some reason, her rash attraction to him changes when
- 17:52he refuses her second attempt to seduce him.
- 17:57And she becomes so angry that she reverses their roles.
- 18:02And she claims that he lied and that he is trying to rape her.
- 18:08And this tragic story ends with Joseph being imprisoned.
- 18:13And we don't ever hear about this wicked woman again.
- 18:17But we do hear of Joseph, righteous wife annist, and she
- 18:21is married to Joseph. The marriage is probably
- 18:23arranged after he is on the throne beside the Pharaoh,
- 18:28working as his right hand man with the priest of on the Lord
- 18:33blesses their union and she is able to bear two sons during the
- 18:38seven years of plenty. But her name is interesting.
- 18:42You know it. If we go back to the roots of
- 18:44it, not only is she the daughter of the of the priest, but
- 18:48traditionally this area worshipped the sun God raw.
- 18:51And so some people say, you know, maybe she was since her
- 18:56name says she belongs to Nihath, who is one of the primordial
- 18:59creator mother gods in the Egyptian pantheon.
- 19:04But it appears that she converts.
- 19:06I personally feel that Anas converted to her husband's
- 19:10religion. That's what most women did.
- 19:13And in addition to that, her two sons, Manasseh and Ephraim,
- 19:18become leaders in the worship of Jehovah.
- 19:22I assume that her mother tongue was Egyptian.
- 19:24I assume that she began learning a little bit of Hebrew, or at
- 19:27least when her two sons were raised in the community amongst
- 19:31their cousins, they learned it in that direction.
- 19:34But within a few generations, her descendants become the
- 19:38second largest numerical tribe in Israel.
- 19:42And it is her two sons that received these beautiful
- 19:45blessings from their grandfather Jacob that promises that they
- 19:52will have great posterity and be great leaders and their
- 19:55posterity becomes the Book of Mormon people.
- 19:58This is where Lehigh and Soraya's family come in.
- 20:01Now if you want to go back and look at some of the apocryphal
- 20:03writings, there is a book called Joseph and Annis.
- 20:06And it comes from about 200 BC. It's, it's the time when, when
- 20:10the Jews are really struggling with how could a righteous male
- 20:13like, like Joseph marry a, a, a Pagan into a Pagan tribe.
- 20:19But I, I feel like between Anas and Rahab and others, we have so
- 20:25many converts. Even Ruth herself is a convert
- 20:29to the ways of Jehovah, and I think that we not only have the
- 20:35beautiful message of her posterity being these two
- 20:37righteous sons, but her posterity is also Joshua the
- 20:42Prophet, Samuel the Prophetess, Deborah, Micah, and of course
- 20:47Joseph Smith Senior. These great women saturate the
- 20:51text, but we have to pull them out in the story.
- 20:54So I'm grateful for this opportunity to share with you
- 20:56some of my love for these lesser known figures because all of
- 21:01them, we find examples of people who are real, who struggle with
- 21:05difficult things. And I hope as they sought their
- 21:09Messiah, you too can seek your Savior, your Redeemer as you
- 21:14studied the scriptures this year.
- 21:16And I leave this with you, in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
