- 0:42Speaker 1: Welcome to the Philadelphia Sports Table podcast show, the longest
- 0:46Speaker 1: running weekly Philly sports podcast show in the world. Thanks
- 0:49Speaker 1: so much for joining us here. As we are closing
- 0:53Speaker 1: in on the end of May, I'm gonna be heading
- 0:56Speaker 1: into June, heading into this summer. Twelve years were strong
- 1:00Speaker 1: here at the PSD podcast show. Again, thanks for watching.
- 1:03Speaker 1: If you're on YouTube, like and subscribe. If you are
- 1:06Speaker 1: new to watching us, and if you're listening on whatever
- 1:09Speaker 1: podcast platform you're on, it's great to be in your ears.
- 1:12Speaker 1: I'm Jeff warn Mere my buddy, Len Hunsicker, buddy, man,
- 1:16Speaker 1: how you doing.
- 1:17Speaker 2: I don't know what this summer is that you speak of,
- 1:19Speaker 2: because I had a rain jacket on today.
- 1:22Speaker 3: I was getting poured on. It was like low fifties.
- 1:25Speaker 1: We're almost there.
- 1:26Speaker 2: It's the end of May. Like I don't know, I'm
- 1:29Speaker 2: not feeling the summer part.
- 1:31Speaker 1: So it's gonna get there. I'm telling you folks, it's
- 1:33Speaker 1: gonna get there. Lenn. At the in June, I think
- 1:36Speaker 1: things are gonna start turning around because, like, as you know, anymore,
- 1:39Speaker 1: we don't have seasons, right, We just have cold and
- 1:43Speaker 1: then crap, which we're in now, and then hot blazing summer.
- 1:49Speaker 1: That's what's gonna happen. It's gonna happen.
- 1:51Speaker 2: Cold is cold is crap to me too, So it
- 1:53Speaker 2: all it's all the same thing. You sound like our
- 1:56Speaker 2: buddy Jay. I just I can't function and I can't think.
- 2:01Speaker 2: I can't do anything in the cold.
- 2:03Speaker 1: Well, I gotta tell you, I like your hat. Is
- 2:05Speaker 1: that a new hat?
- 2:06Speaker 4: Well?
- 2:06Speaker 1: I haven't seen that one.
- 2:07Speaker 3: In a why what?
- 2:08Speaker 1: I don't know?
- 2:09Speaker 4: Maybe?
- 2:09Speaker 1: All right, very nice, nice Phillies hat that Lenn is
- 2:12Speaker 1: wearing here. And we're certainly going to be getting into
- 2:15Speaker 1: this Phillies team because they have been fantastic as of late,
- 2:20Speaker 1: best team in Major League Baseball. We're certainly going to
- 2:23Speaker 1: be getting into that team on the show. But first
- 2:26Speaker 1: we're gonna be getting into this week in Philly sports history.
- 2:28Speaker 1: Then some Phillies talk. Also going to talk about Bryce
- 2:31Speaker 1: Harper getting nailed in the arm and elbow from a
- 2:36Speaker 1: pitch by Spencer Strider of the Atlanta Braves. So many
- 2:39Speaker 1: of us saw that and we were just absolutely it
- 2:43Speaker 1: took our breath away. Oh my gosh. Bryce Harper might
- 2:45Speaker 1: be injured for a long time. X rays negative. We
- 2:50Speaker 1: don't know when he's going to be back in the lineup,
- 2:52Speaker 1: but we're going to dive into that in terms of
- 2:53Speaker 1: our Phillies talk, and then we're gonna get into some
- 2:56Speaker 1: Flyers talk because the organizations bringing back in Leaparrier, they're
- 3:01Speaker 1: bringing Lappie back to Philly. I tell you, they just
- 3:03Speaker 1: love you.
- 3:05Speaker 2: Take a puck to the face, Yes, I'm blocking a
- 3:08Speaker 2: shot and your set for Lush absolutely yes.
- 3:11Speaker 1: And from there we're gonna get into some football talk
- 3:14Speaker 1: this week. We've got a storyline we're following here. We
- 3:18Speaker 1: know that the Tush push we talked about it last
- 3:20Speaker 1: week was alive and well, and we know that it
- 3:23Speaker 1: is going to be for at least this coming season.
- 3:26Speaker 1: But afterwards, it was a report that came out Roger
- 3:28Speaker 1: Goodell in the NFL they're trying to take a hard
- 3:32Speaker 1: look at the salary cap system and they're going to
- 3:35Speaker 1: do this in the future to make sure that teams
- 3:37Speaker 1: are managing their rosters with the spirit of the system. Folks.
- 3:42Speaker 1: This is obviously a direct jab at the Eagles and
- 3:45Speaker 1: Howie Roseman for how they've been handling players salaries and
- 3:49Speaker 1: contracts over these years. So we're gonna give our thoughts there. Now,
- 3:53Speaker 1: what we're thrown down on the table. This week, We've
- 3:55Speaker 1: got our good friend, it's been coming on for so
- 3:57Speaker 1: many years. Brandon Lee outing from Bleedinggreen Nation dot com.
- 4:00Speaker 1: We're gonna talk about this Eagles offseason a bit, and
- 4:02Speaker 1: some other NFL storylines as well. We're gonna dive into
- 4:05Speaker 1: the NFC East and what's been going on with some
- 4:08Speaker 1: of these teams as well. So, Lenn, I think we
- 4:11Speaker 1: got to get to our first story and first segment,
- 4:15Speaker 1: as we've been doing here this week in Philly sports history. Now,
- 4:20Speaker 1: I'm gonna go through four different dates here, and all
- 4:25Speaker 1: of them are so unique in their own way, and
- 4:28Speaker 1: then we may talk about one or two of these
- 4:31Speaker 1: after So, Buddy, I'm gonna start off with May twenty fourth,
- 4:35Speaker 1: nineteen thirty five. Yes, May twenty fourth, nineteen thirty five,
- 4:39Speaker 1: the Philadelphia Phillies participated in Major League Baseball's very first
- 4:44Speaker 1: night game against the Cincinnati Reds at Crossley Field. This
- 4:49Speaker 1: historic event introduced nighttime baseball to the major leagues really
- 4:54Speaker 1: changed how fans experienced the game. Moving along May twentieth,
- 4:59Speaker 1: nineteen seven, Folks, it was I was not alive, Lend
- 5:04Speaker 1: You were not alive during that time either, correct, but
- 5:07Speaker 1: it was. Yes, but it was the Flyers' first Stanley
- 5:10Speaker 1: Cup parade. Following their first Stanley Cup victory on May nineteenth,
- 5:14Speaker 1: nineteen seventy four, the Flyers celebrated with a massive parade.
- 5:18Speaker 1: On May twentieth, an estimated two million fans lined Broad
- 5:23Speaker 1: Street and Independence Mall to honor the Broadstreet Bullies, making
- 5:27Speaker 1: it one of the largest gatherings in the city's history.
- 5:31Speaker 1: And then from there moving along to May thirty first,
- 5:34Speaker 1: nineteen eighty three. Oh, yes, indeed, folks, And who knows
- 5:38Speaker 1: if we'll ever see one of these again. Yes, Len,
- 5:40Speaker 1: you and I were both alive, but I was a
- 5:43Speaker 1: little tyke at this point. The Philadelphia seventy six ers.
- 5:46Speaker 1: They clinched the NBA Championship on May thirty first, and
- 5:50Speaker 1: they completed a four game sweep of the Los Angeles
- 5:53Speaker 1: Lakers led by Julius Irving and in the finals MVP
- 5:58Speaker 1: Moses Malone, first team title since nineteen sixty seven, and
- 6:03Speaker 1: really solidified their place in NBA history. And finally May
- 6:07Speaker 1: twenty fourth, nineteen ninety nine, this is interesting. On May
- 6:11Speaker 1: twenty fourth, nineteen ninety nine, the Phillies featured a unique
- 6:15Speaker 1: battery with pitcher Joel Bennett and catcher Gary Bennett sharing
- 6:20Speaker 1: the same surname, and for the first time in team's history.
- 6:24Speaker 1: The Phillies won that game five before of the Montreal
- 6:27Speaker 1: Expos at Veterans Stadium. So lots happening this week in
- 6:31Speaker 1: the world of Philly sports history, my friend, Yeah.
- 6:35Speaker 3: Kind of. It's funny just listening to some of that.
- 6:38Speaker 3: Just a couple things jump out. One that what was
- 6:43Speaker 3: the day of the Flyers Parade.
- 6:44Speaker 1: The day of the Flyers Parade was May twentieth.
- 6:48Speaker 2: May twenty, So May twentieth is when they're having the parade,
- 6:50Speaker 2: which means the Stanley Cup Finals had been wrapped up
- 6:53Speaker 2: probably a couple of days before.
- 6:54Speaker 1: The day before.
- 6:56Speaker 2: Yeah, so it's now almost June and we're still in
- 6:59Speaker 2: the conference finals for for hockey, So I mean, how
- 7:03Speaker 2: much everything's gotten pushed back? And then it's funny, you know,
- 7:06Speaker 2: you go through you talk about, Okay, the Sixers won
- 7:08Speaker 2: in eighty three, so it's just like, Okay, I was
- 7:11Speaker 2: this age when the Eagles last one. Obviously, Yeah, you know,
- 7:14Speaker 2: I'm basically the same age I'm now I was thirty
- 7:17Speaker 2: two when the Phillies last one. To know, eight, I
- 7:19Speaker 2: was seven when I was when the Sixers last one,
- 7:24Speaker 2: and I was a year away from being born when
- 7:27Speaker 2: the Flyers won.
- 7:28Speaker 1: Their last one.
- 7:29Speaker 2: So yeah, just going through all that, it's just like,
- 7:31Speaker 2: holy smokes, it's been a while for both those teams.
- 7:34Speaker 1: Absolutely, And that's what I wanted to mention with you
- 7:37Speaker 1: because you know, if we're like, if we look at
- 7:39Speaker 1: our contemporary history, the world of Philly sports has seen
- 7:42Speaker 1: a decent amount of success over these years.
- 7:45Speaker 2: It has been bad when you consider that that like
- 7:48Speaker 2: chasm between the Sixers in you know, in eighty three
- 7:52Speaker 2: yea and the Phillies winning in two thousand and eight.
- 7:55Speaker 2: I mean, and there were some you know, obviously the
- 7:57Speaker 2: Flyers made a couple Cup finals and you know they're
- 8:00Speaker 2: there was some you know, the Sixers made an NBA final,
- 8:03Speaker 2: the Phillies in ninety three make it the World Series final,
- 8:06Speaker 2: but no actual winning of anything. So I mean, it's
- 8:09Speaker 2: been decent since. I mean, I'll take it exactly.
- 8:13Speaker 1: Look, I'll take the Super Bowl wins, you know, I'll
- 8:15Speaker 1: take what the Phillies have done recently hasn't produced a championship,
- 8:19Speaker 1: but it has been exciting to watch. In terms of
- 8:22Speaker 1: baseball for this city it really has. Yeah, absolutely, all right, Well,
- 8:27Speaker 1: that was a great segment, and let us know if
- 8:30Speaker 1: you like our This Week in Philly Sports History. Again,
- 8:33Speaker 1: Lenn and I bringing this back after we started twelve
- 8:37Speaker 1: years ago. It was one of our one of our
- 8:40Speaker 1: ongoing segments. So hope you like. At Philadelphia Sports Table
- 8:43Speaker 1: at gmail dot com, we'd love to hear from you
- 8:45Speaker 1: here on the show. If you have any ideas or
- 8:47Speaker 1: thoughts about anything in the world of Philly sports, reach
- 8:49Speaker 1: out to us again, Philadelphia Sports Table at gmail dot com.
- 8:54Speaker 1: Moving along here, Lenn, we're gonna dive now into the
- 8:58Speaker 1: fact that the Phillies have the best record in Major
- 9:01Speaker 1: League Baseball. It has been pretty fantastic watching this team.
- 9:05Speaker 1: Sometimes these games have been nailbitiers for sure, but you know,
- 9:09Speaker 1: as of late, and it's interesting reflecting on recent PST
- 9:13Speaker 1: podcast shows and if you look, you know, even if
- 9:16Speaker 1: you listen to other podcasts, one of our favorites is
- 9:19Speaker 1: the Hitting Season podcasts with our friend John Stalinist, Liz
- 9:22Speaker 1: Rocher and Justin Klue, you know, talking about how initial
- 9:25Speaker 1: and early struggles they've really seemed to like smooth themselves out,
- 9:29Speaker 1: including I hesitate to say and I should probably knock
- 9:32Speaker 1: on wood the bullpen. The bullpen has been performing pretty
- 9:36Speaker 1: well as of late, and especially exactly the whole concept
- 9:42Speaker 1: of next man up. I think they're meeting the moment.
- 9:45Speaker 1: And O'Ryan Kirkering, who we had some very very uh
- 9:49Speaker 1: how can I say, we're very trepidacious about what his
- 9:51Speaker 1: season was going to look like. He has really been
- 9:54Speaker 1: smoothing some things out as well. So it has been
- 9:57Speaker 1: really fun watching this Phillies team. And you know, I
- 10:00Speaker 1: think if they continue at this pace, and yes, they're
- 10:03Speaker 1: playing teams that they should be beating, but if they
- 10:05Speaker 1: continue at this pace, I think it's going to keep
- 10:08Speaker 1: the confidence level up there with this team and you know,
- 10:11Speaker 1: probably going to be a top of the NL East,
- 10:13Speaker 1: you know, for some time here.
- 10:15Speaker 3: Yeah, it's funny.
- 10:16Speaker 2: You know, we earlier in the season we had talked about, Oh,
- 10:19Speaker 2: they don't seem to have that spark. I mean, they
- 10:21Speaker 2: have a winning record, but you know, you know, I
- 10:25Speaker 2: guess maybe they'll be in the wild card hunt whatever.
- 10:28Speaker 2: Since May sixth, they have gone on a run i'd
- 10:32Speaker 2: say past twenty one games seventeen and four, so they've
- 10:36Speaker 2: been on a heater, you know, recently like really, you know,
- 10:40Speaker 2: there were some teams in there that aren't as good.
- 10:43Speaker 2: You know, you had that stretch with Pittsburgh and Colorado
- 10:46Speaker 2: and then the A's. You know, they ended up winning
- 10:49Speaker 2: you know what seven out of those nine games. Yeah,
- 10:52Speaker 2: so you know, or some'm sorry, Yeah, it's eight out
- 10:55Speaker 2: of those nine games.
- 10:56Speaker 3: Rather sorry.
- 10:58Speaker 2: So yeah, they did what they had to do against
- 11:00Speaker 2: teams that aren't as good. But you know that's everybody's
- 11:04Speaker 2: going to play those teams, so it's not like they're
- 11:05Speaker 2: they're you know, feasting on a on a cream pup
- 11:08Speaker 2: schedule that nobody else is gonna play. So yeah, they've
- 11:11Speaker 2: been they've been great, and they've been playing a lot better.
- 11:14Speaker 2: You know, I was able to watch. I worked overnights
- 11:16Speaker 2: the past couple of days, so I was able to
- 11:18Speaker 2: watch the entire A series that was that was tougher
- 11:21Speaker 2: than I thought it was going to be because the
- 11:24Speaker 2: all three of those games against I guess you can't
- 11:27Speaker 2: call them Oakland anymore, and you're not allowed to call
- 11:29Speaker 2: them Sacramento.
- 11:30Speaker 1: The league team.
- 11:31Speaker 2: Yeah, well yeah, wherever they're from. Yeah, those were all
- 11:36Speaker 2: like dogfights. All all three of those games are tight. All,
- 11:39Speaker 2: you know, I think couple win extra innings, So those
- 11:42Speaker 2: are tough games. But they you know, they've really been
- 11:44Speaker 2: handling business lately. Yeah, really nice to see.
- 11:47Speaker 1: Yeah, they absolutely have. And again it's it's what we
- 11:50Speaker 1: want to see because we know this team has the
- 11:53Speaker 1: talent to do it. You know. I talked on our
- 11:55Speaker 1: Opposition Territory Pod this week with our guest as we're
- 11:58Speaker 1: diving into the Seattle Mariners team, just about how their
- 12:01Speaker 1: team is much different in terms of their offense, in
- 12:04Speaker 1: terms of their batting than the Phillies. I mean, we
- 12:06Speaker 1: just know that this Phillies team, it's all about power,
- 12:09Speaker 1: you know, It's all about the launch angle, It's all
- 12:11Speaker 1: about you know, how many home runs are they going
- 12:13Speaker 1: to be able to hit during a game to really
- 12:15Speaker 1: generate the offense. While a lot of other teams are
- 12:17Speaker 1: playing small ball and being successful at it, there are
- 12:20Speaker 1: times when I wish that they can turn that switch
- 12:24Speaker 1: on and off of Okay, we need to play some
- 12:26Speaker 1: small ball now in this moment. But then again, it's
- 12:30Speaker 1: hard to complain because the team is doing so well
- 12:33Speaker 1: and they have the best record actually baseball, you know, ideally,
- 12:37Speaker 1: you know, the best teams don't just beat you the
- 12:40Speaker 1: same way every single time.
- 12:41Speaker 3: They can do different things. They can.
- 12:44Speaker 2: Okay, one game, we're going to hit six home runs
- 12:46Speaker 2: and just bury you with offense. Another game, you know
- 12:49Speaker 2: they're doing the small ball thing. The best teams can
- 12:51Speaker 2: do all of that, and I think that's all we
- 12:53Speaker 2: want for the Phillies is for them to be, you know,
- 12:55Speaker 2: the best version of themselves and be able to, you know,
- 12:58Speaker 2: not be a one trick pony.
- 12:59Speaker 3: I guess offensively.
- 13:00Speaker 1: Yeah, absolutely, absolutely lost. Reasonable, Yeah, it is, It's reasonable
- 13:05Speaker 1: for sure. What's not reasonable is a guy named Spencer
- 13:08Speaker 1: Stryder from the Atlanta Braves, the dirty Atlanta Braves. Spencer
- 13:14Speaker 1: Strider nails Bryce Harper with a four seam fastball right
- 13:18Speaker 1: in his elbow, and we were all just holding our
- 13:21Speaker 1: breaths as Bryce Harper left the game. Fortunately, the x
- 13:26Speaker 1: Rays came back negative, great sign considering it the same
- 13:29Speaker 1: elbow that Bryce Harper had repaired with surgery after the
- 13:33Speaker 1: twenty twenty two season. But man, that freaking Spencer Strider.
- 13:37Speaker 1: How about him trolling Phillies fans with his postgame remarks
- 13:42Speaker 1: saying because the athletics. Jason Stark asked asked Spencer Strider
- 13:49Speaker 1: about his experience pitching at Citizens Bank Park, in particular,
- 13:53Speaker 1: particularly about the crowd, and he says, oh, I love
- 13:56Speaker 1: pitching here. I mean, where else do they chant your name,
- 13:58Speaker 1: ask ask how your family is doing. They seem very
- 14:01Speaker 1: interested in my well being and I appreciate that. God,
- 14:03Speaker 1: I hate this guy, I really, I mean, I'm just
- 14:06Speaker 1: like the The.
- 14:08Speaker 2: Remark that kind of, I guess made me pause a
- 14:12Speaker 2: little bit, was like, well, I thought he had, you know,
- 14:15Speaker 2: the armor, like, because these guys, you know, basically they
- 14:18Speaker 2: have so many like you know, different so much patting
- 14:20Speaker 2: when they come to the plate now, And I think
- 14:23Speaker 2: he didn't really he thought that Harper was being a
- 14:26Speaker 2: baby at first, and then he was and then he said,
- 14:28Speaker 2: you know, oh, I didn't realize he didn't have the
- 14:31Speaker 2: the elbow pad on, as if that would have made
- 14:33Speaker 2: hitting him in that spot okay exactly. You know, he's
- 14:36Speaker 2: still you know, I don't think it was intentional. At
- 14:40Speaker 2: the same time, I don't, you know, think he probably
- 14:44Speaker 2: handled that, you know, the media scrum, I guess as
- 14:47Speaker 2: well as he could have.
- 14:48Speaker 3: There, Yeah for sure, But.
- 14:50Speaker 2: Yeah, I was I was watching that game too, and
- 14:52Speaker 2: as soon as I saw it, I said, oh God, Damn,
- 14:54Speaker 2: here we go, just like, come on, man, I know,
- 14:59Speaker 2: but es actually you know, coming off the run that
- 15:01Speaker 2: they've been on, I mean it's yes, and you know.
- 15:03Speaker 1: And he's been yes.
- 15:05Speaker 3: And I was just about to bring that up.
- 15:07Speaker 2: This is a guy that, you know, a couple of
- 15:08Speaker 2: weeks ago was hitting like what two thirty something.
- 15:11Speaker 3: He's up to two sixty seven.
- 15:13Speaker 2: You know, he's the power has been you know, it's
- 15:16Speaker 2: not overwhelming eight home runs, but you know he's hitting
- 15:20Speaker 2: the ball out better than he was a couple of
- 15:21Speaker 2: weeks ago.
- 15:22Speaker 3: So you hate to see a.
- 15:23Speaker 2: Guy that is in a groove now have an interruption,
- 15:27Speaker 2: you know, due to you know, having having to sit
- 15:29Speaker 2: out for a couple of days, you know, because you know,
- 15:31Speaker 2: does he lose his timing? You know, that's the last
- 15:34Speaker 2: thing you want.
- 15:34Speaker 1: Yeah, absolutely, I go. I want to bring up what
- 15:38Speaker 1: we were kind of just talking about, like in terms
- 15:40Speaker 1: of the bullpen, how the loss of Alvarado was huge,
- 15:45Speaker 1: you know, and and and Bryce Harper doesn't seem like
- 15:47Speaker 1: he's going to be out for as long as Jose Alvarado.
- 15:49Speaker 1: But that next man up mentality I think is really
- 15:52Speaker 1: important right now. And if the team is seeing a
- 15:54Speaker 1: bullpen that's able to do this, and if the team
- 15:57Speaker 1: is able to rally behind the scene like they have
- 16:01Speaker 1: done with the bullpen, to make sure that that next
- 16:04Speaker 1: man up is going to be feeling good about going
- 16:08Speaker 1: into certain game situations. And I think the same is
- 16:11Speaker 1: going to be true for you know, whoever is going
- 16:14Speaker 1: to be taken over for Bryce Harper and whoever is
- 16:16Speaker 1: going to be that next man up as well. I
- 16:18Speaker 1: think the team, as much as it stinks to not
- 16:21Speaker 1: have Harper there for maybe a couple of games, a
- 16:23Speaker 1: few games, I think they're in a good position and
- 16:26Speaker 1: a good place mentally for it to actually happen and
- 16:29Speaker 1: for them to be successful. Yeah.
- 16:31Speaker 2: I mean, I guess you know what happened in that
- 16:34Speaker 2: game is after Harper went down, you know, you had
- 16:36Speaker 2: Sosa come in and play third, and then you move
- 16:38Speaker 2: Bom over to first. I would imagine that's just going
- 16:41Speaker 2: to be, you know, what it's going to be for
- 16:42Speaker 2: the time being, and you know, we'll see how it
- 16:46Speaker 2: works out. I mean, Sosa has been great in his
- 16:49Speaker 2: limited role off of the bench so far. I mean,
- 16:51Speaker 2: with anything, I think the more you know you have
- 16:53Speaker 2: a bench guy at the plate, the more maybe they
- 16:56Speaker 2: get exposed a little bit, So maybe that'll happen with
- 16:58Speaker 2: Sosa a little bit. But I mean, he's he's shown
- 17:01Speaker 2: himself to be capable in his time here, so you know, yeah,
- 17:03Speaker 2: hopefully it's nothing that you know, he's not out for
- 17:06Speaker 2: like months or whatever. Hopefully it's you know, maybe a
- 17:08Speaker 2: week or two at the most, and you know they
- 17:10Speaker 2: can just hold the fort until he gets back.
- 17:12Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 17:13Speaker 1: It was really great to see, though, the Phillies winning
- 17:15Speaker 1: that game, beating Spencer Stryder, because, like of course, we
- 17:18Speaker 1: have known over over the years here, Spencer Stryder's gotten
- 17:22Speaker 1: the best of the Phillies his fair share of times
- 17:25Speaker 1: and nine career regular season appearances, Spencer Strider has a
- 17:29Speaker 1: two point one five ERA and has struck out eighty
- 17:32Speaker 1: two Phillies and fifty four and a third innings of work.
- 17:36Speaker 1: So the Phillies being able to beat him, and given
- 17:39Speaker 1: what happened to Bryce Harper, I think it really said
- 17:42Speaker 1: a lot about this team, just them rallying together at
- 17:46Speaker 1: this point, like it's it's just fun baseball. I'm so
- 17:50Speaker 1: glad we're not watching the crap from from back in
- 17:53Speaker 1: you know, April. That was just really tough to watch.
- 17:56Speaker 1: So Spencer Stryder's gotten the best of this Phillies team,
- 17:59Speaker 1: but they got the to him this past week here
- 18:01Speaker 1: and it was really good to say.
- 18:03Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 18:03Speaker 2: Yeah, and a couple of big games tomorrow. Obviously we're
- 18:06Speaker 2: recording this on Wednesday, May twenty eighth. They got rained
- 18:09Speaker 2: out today. Yeah, so we're looking at a doubleheader tomorrow
- 18:12Speaker 2: one oh five and six forty five. So, you know,
- 18:16Speaker 2: anytime you're playing a division opponent, especially the Braves as
- 18:19Speaker 2: I'm never going to be certain that they're out of it.
- 18:22Speaker 2: So you know, anytime you can put a foot on
- 18:24Speaker 2: their neck, you know you need to do it.
- 18:26Speaker 1: Got to do it absolutely. All right, Well, we are
- 18:29Speaker 1: going to head to our first break here, but before
- 18:32Speaker 1: we do, follow us on various social media sites. We
- 18:36Speaker 1: are over on Instagram. Search out the Philadelphia Sports Table.
- 18:40Speaker 1: I'm over on Instagram at mister jeff Warren. We're also
- 18:43Speaker 1: on Twitter, slash x at Philadelphia PST. You can follow
- 18:46Speaker 1: me at Jeffrey Underscore Warren. I'm over on TikTok. Search
- 18:50Speaker 1: me out there. You can like our Facebook page. Search
- 18:52Speaker 1: out the Philadelphia Sports Table. We're on threads. Eric and
- 18:56Speaker 1: I are over on Blue Sky. You can follow us
- 18:59Speaker 1: over there. Len, you are still taking your social media diet,
- 19:03Speaker 1: and I think it's fantastic. I think it's great.
- 19:06Speaker 2: I don't I don't see it at anytime soon. I
- 19:10Speaker 2: haven't really had the itch to you know that the
- 19:12Speaker 2: whole blue sky thing potentially interests me. But you know, yea,
- 19:17Speaker 2: by and large, I don't really miss social media.
- 19:21Speaker 1: Though, you don't miss social media that much.
- 19:22Speaker 3: Yeah, okay, really right.
- 19:25Speaker 1: Sounds good. I wish I could be. I'm like, I
- 19:29Speaker 1: feel like I'm always there because I hate it so much.
- 19:31Speaker 1: But I'm like, no, I can't do it.
- 19:33Speaker 2: That's that's not you. That's people in this in this
- 19:38Speaker 2: age that we're in, you know, technologically driven. I just
- 19:42Speaker 2: I don't know. I I don't want to.
- 19:45Speaker 3: I don't want to spend my life doing this, you know.
- 19:47Speaker 1: Just I just don't give you all the credit in
- 19:49Speaker 1: the world. Buddy. All right, well, we are going to
- 19:51Speaker 1: take our first break here. We will be back in
- 19:54Speaker 1: just a bit. Stick with us, all right, we are back, Len,
- 19:59Speaker 1: Len head is drink there? Fantastic? How was it was that?
- 20:02Speaker 1: A tasty one? My friend? It's good, very nice?
- 20:06Speaker 3: Well, there it is there you go.
- 20:09Speaker 1: You know, it's a late night here, you know, little Scotch,
- 20:12Speaker 1: you know, watching some sports. You know that that that's
- 20:15Speaker 1: what life should be about. Nothing wrong with that, Nope,
- 20:17Speaker 1: not at all. All right, folks, let's dive into the
- 20:20Speaker 1: Flyers here and that not too too much has been
- 20:23Speaker 1: going on with this team, But we did want to
- 20:25Speaker 1: mention the fact that they are bringing Ian Leperier back
- 20:29Speaker 1: to Philadelphia. Yes, he is no longer the coach of
- 20:32Speaker 1: the Lehigh Valley Phantoms within the farm system. He's now
- 20:36Speaker 1: going to be an official advisor advisor to hockey operations.
- 20:41Speaker 1: That's the title here. I wanted to just basically give
- 20:45Speaker 1: our thoughts here on this move. There was, of course,
- 20:49Speaker 1: some grumbling with the Flyers fan base because you know,
- 20:54Speaker 1: the thought was that Lappie was kind of failing upwards
- 20:57Speaker 1: and that the Flyers were continuing to recycle their eyes
- 21:00Speaker 1: within the UH organization here and and maybe that's true,
- 21:04Speaker 1: maybe not, depending on how much influence a quote advisor
- 21:08Speaker 1: in this capacity has. But Laperrrieri's coached the Phantoms for
- 21:12Speaker 1: the last few seasons, and uh, this is a team
- 21:15Speaker 1: that just had a pretty successful season. But I do
- 21:17Speaker 1: have to say this, like I don't mind if the
- 21:21Speaker 1: organization is going to bring in a coach for the Phantoms,
- 21:24Speaker 1: that may be a little bit different. You know, you
- 21:27Speaker 1: may want someone different coaching this team, coaching the prospects
- 21:31Speaker 1: in Lehigh Valley when you've got guys like Jet Luchenko
- 21:34Speaker 1: Emil Andre who are developing and at that point in
- 21:38Speaker 1: their career. So I don't know, just something for folks
- 21:41Speaker 1: to think about. I kind of like that that it's
- 21:44Speaker 1: gonna be somebody. Well, maybe it's gonna be somebody new.
- 21:46Speaker 1: I should I shouldn't put the car before the horse here.
- 21:48Speaker 1: Maybe maybe the Flyers do, like I don't know, maybe
- 21:51Speaker 1: they maybe they make some some guy in the front office.
- 21:54Speaker 1: We don't know the coach of the Phantoms, But I
- 21:56Speaker 1: was thinking, all right, I'm fine with it. If he's
- 21:58Speaker 1: going to be a quote advisor or whatever the heck
- 22:00Speaker 1: that is, then let some new blood come into this
- 22:03Speaker 1: organization and and and even the farm system here. I
- 22:05Speaker 1: don't know what were your thoughts here.
- 22:08Speaker 2: I just whoever the Fantoms hire as their coach, it
- 22:12Speaker 2: needs to be cohesion. Because there was that story where
- 22:15Speaker 2: like the Fantoms played a different way than the Flyers
- 22:19Speaker 2: played under Tortorella. Yes, and guys would come up and
- 22:21Speaker 2: they're kind of they'd have to learn new terminology and
- 22:23Speaker 2: they're head to be on a swivel. Rick Tockett has
- 22:26Speaker 2: to come in and say, this is the way the
- 22:27Speaker 2: big club's playing, and this is the way the parent
- 22:30Speaker 2: club or the the the fantoms are going to be
- 22:33Speaker 2: playing as well. Ye, it's gonna it's got to be
- 22:35Speaker 2: cohesion across the two or else you're you're setting your
- 22:40Speaker 2: kids up for failure. So whoever they hire Tackett has
- 22:44Speaker 2: to say, this is the style we're gonna play, and
- 22:46Speaker 2: it's going to be that you know in the AHL
- 22:49Speaker 2: and the NHL.
- 22:50Speaker 3: Is is that's what I want?
- 22:51Speaker 1: Yes? Yeah, you would mentioned that a couple of months ago.
- 22:55Speaker 1: I remember when we were talking about that, you had
- 22:57Speaker 1: mentioned that, and I think that cohesion is absolutely necessary.
- 23:00Speaker 1: How are you going to develop players one way, get
- 23:04Speaker 1: them to the big club down in Philly and then
- 23:07Speaker 1: it's a completely new system here. So I like that fact.
- 23:11Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, you're just.
- 23:15Speaker 2: You're just basically tying a hand behind your back with
- 23:18Speaker 2: some of these kids if you do things that way.
- 23:20Speaker 2: So I don't know, I just it was strange to me.
- 23:24Speaker 1: It's strange, but then again, I do feel that level
- 23:27Speaker 1: of hope and optimism, and I know we weren't necessarily
- 23:29Speaker 1: going to get into, you know, with the future of
- 23:32Speaker 1: this Flyers team and organization is going to hold. We're
- 23:36Speaker 1: going to have Madeline Campbell from Broadstreet Hockey dot Com.
- 23:40Speaker 1: She's going to be joining us on Monday for the
- 23:42Speaker 1: Table Talk show to kind of dive into some prospects
- 23:45Speaker 1: and who we should be looking at in terms of
- 23:46Speaker 1: the NHL Draft and who the Flyers may be taking
- 23:49Speaker 1: in the first round. Some interesting prospects. But with all
- 23:53Speaker 1: these changes, Rick Tocket, you know, the fact that there's
- 23:56Speaker 1: going to be that new head coach in Lehigh Valley,
- 23:59Speaker 1: Len and then you've got these first round picks, these
- 24:02Speaker 1: three first round picks, Like there is a lot on
- 24:06Speaker 1: the line here. There's a ton on the line here
- 24:09Speaker 1: for Danny Brier and this Flyers organization moving forward, and
- 24:13Speaker 1: it's like they have to nail all of this right
- 24:15Speaker 1: now for there to be any chance that this team
- 24:18Speaker 1: is competitive in the future. They have to nail this
- 24:21Speaker 1: right now.
- 24:22Speaker 2: Yeah, the next two off seasons I think are gonna
- 24:27Speaker 2: set up the next maybe fifteen years for this team
- 24:30Speaker 2: in terms of this year, you know, you got you know, okay,
- 24:33Speaker 2: a new coaching You've got a chance to really stock
- 24:36Speaker 2: your system with contributors in the future. In this draft
- 24:39Speaker 2: because you mentioned the you know, the three first rounders,
- 24:42Speaker 2: there's four second rounders. Those guys can contribute. If you
- 24:45Speaker 2: go back and look at on Wikipedia at NHL drafts
- 24:48Speaker 2: from different years, you can go into the second round
- 24:51Speaker 2: a lot of time and find all stars, find contributors,
- 24:54Speaker 2: you know, guys that you know that can help you win.
- 24:57Speaker 2: So that's gonna be big. And then next year, if
- 25:00Speaker 2: I believe the cap is supposed to go up, that's
- 25:03Speaker 2: I mean, hopefully they don't you know, spend money on
- 25:05Speaker 2: on guys that you know, I don't know, I don't
- 25:08Speaker 2: know that too crazy, Yeah, like or guys that just
- 25:12Speaker 2: aren't gonna really move the needle. Hopefully they don't do
- 25:14Speaker 2: that this this off season, but maybe next season, once
- 25:18Speaker 2: the purse strings open up a little bit, then maybe
- 25:21Speaker 2: they can, you know, do what the Flyers under Ed
- 25:23Speaker 2: Snyder did, which is, you know, entice people to come here,
- 25:27Speaker 2: buy them, you know, because they're gonna have the money
- 25:28Speaker 2: to be able to do that.
- 25:29Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, absolutely, all right, Well, good talk there with
- 25:33Speaker 1: regard to the Flyers, Oh, I forgot to I forgot
- 25:35Speaker 1: to put the banner for for the folks on YouTube.
- 25:37Speaker 1: I forgot to put the banner up. We had this
- 25:40Speaker 1: one right here. Flyers are bringing La Perri Air back
- 25:42Speaker 1: to Philly. Man, I forgot to do it. I'm still
- 25:45Speaker 1: an amateur here on Uh.
- 25:48Speaker 2: What I mean are you what are your thoughts with
- 25:51Speaker 2: the little Perry? Do not care or does it matter
- 25:54Speaker 2: to you one way or the well?
- 25:55Speaker 1: Kind of like like I like I said before, it
- 25:58Speaker 1: really I'm kind of like I'm find that he's going
- 26:00Speaker 1: to the Flyer's front office. He has institutional knowledge. Quite frankly,
- 26:04Speaker 1: I think it's okay. I'm fine with it. I like
- 26:07Speaker 1: the fact that there's going to be somebody new, hopefully new,
- 26:10Speaker 1: that's going to be coming from the outside into the
- 26:13Speaker 1: organization to to uh to basically develop these players that
- 26:19Speaker 1: we're going to be looking at again Emil Ingree jet Luchenko.
- 26:24Speaker 1: These guys need to develop and we need that coach
- 26:26Speaker 1: and I hopefully it's an outside presence. It's going to
- 26:29Speaker 1: be able to bring a different type of philosophy and
- 26:31Speaker 1: maybe a different way of doing things, but that can
- 26:34Speaker 1: align with what Rick Tocket is going to be doing
- 26:37Speaker 1: that it's exactly like from what you're saying, you know
- 26:39Speaker 1: earlier in the discussion. I just like, so.
- 26:42Speaker 2: He's coming on as a you know, special advisor to
- 26:45Speaker 2: hockey operations. John Leclair is also that Patrick Sharp also
- 26:50Speaker 2: former flyer also that you know that's not and so
- 26:54Speaker 2: I don't know what those guys do. The senior advisors,
- 26:56Speaker 2: the Paul Holme grins, Bob Clark's, Bill Barber's like.
- 27:00Speaker 1: What they all just sit in a conference room and
- 27:03Speaker 1: it's it's incestuous.
- 27:05Speaker 2: That's that's my that's my point of like I want
- 27:08Speaker 2: to know what all these because like how many advisors
- 27:11Speaker 2: do you need?
- 27:11Speaker 3: Like what all you know?
- 27:13Speaker 2: Not to bring a political thing into this, but if
- 27:16Speaker 2: there was ever a company where Doge maybe needed to
- 27:18Speaker 2: come in, yes and and and cut some fat, maybe
- 27:22Speaker 2: it's the flyers, Like it's absolutely flyers.
- 27:26Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 27:27Speaker 2: I just like I just want to like be able
- 27:30Speaker 2: to walk in the room when they're all sitting around.
- 27:32Speaker 2: I just want to know what is it that you
- 27:34Speaker 2: do here?
- 27:34Speaker 3: Right?
- 27:37Speaker 1: I send him an email ask for three things they've done?
- 27:42Speaker 2: Yeah, that would be pretty great.
- 27:45Speaker 1: Threat. What are three things in your job responsibilities. Email
- 27:49Speaker 1: me back by tomorrow end of business. Yeah, that would
- 27:54Speaker 1: be awesome, that'd be great. All right, I'd love to
- 27:57Speaker 1: see that email from Bob Clark by the way, Oh God,
- 27:59Speaker 1: wouldn't that'd be great? Lace probably yeah, probably exactly. Get
- 28:06Speaker 1: Doze in there, get him in there. I love the idea.
- 28:09Speaker 1: All right. Well, uh, before we let letting go here
- 28:12Speaker 1: and before we get to what we're thrown down on
- 28:14Speaker 1: the table. Great discussion with Brandon Lee gouton coming up.
- 28:17Speaker 1: We wanted to get into an NFL and an actual
- 28:20Speaker 1: Eagles based storyline, as NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell recently said
- 28:27Speaker 1: that the NFL is going to be taking a look
- 28:29Speaker 1: at the salary cap system in the future to see
- 28:32Speaker 1: if teams are truly managing their rosters with the quote
- 28:36Speaker 1: spirit of the system. This, as many have thought within
- 28:41Speaker 1: Eagles Nation, was a direct jab at the Eagles and
- 28:44Speaker 1: Howie Roseman for how they've handled player contracts and salaries
- 28:49Speaker 1: over the years. So we wanted to give our thoughts
- 28:51Speaker 1: here on this too. And you may be wondering, Okay,
- 28:55Speaker 1: what are you what are you talking about?
- 28:56Speaker 3: Like?
- 28:56Speaker 1: What what what is the integrity issue of the system
- 29:01Speaker 1: that the NFL salary cap actually has. As we know,
- 29:04Speaker 1: it's a hard cap, and while it's true that there
- 29:08Speaker 1: is a cap of money that teams cannot go under,
- 29:11Speaker 1: it's the manipulation of the salary cap that Howie Roseman
- 29:14Speaker 1: and in fact other teams have have done and embarked
- 29:17Speaker 1: on over the years via salary to bonus conversions that
- 29:23Speaker 1: has been on the rise since the league's salary cap
- 29:25Speaker 1: ceiling initially dropped in twenty twenty to combat the loss
- 29:29Speaker 1: of money that went hand in hand with the COVID season. So,
- 29:33Speaker 1: for example, here say if I were a general manager
- 29:37Speaker 1: wanted to pay a player a one year, fifty million
- 29:40Speaker 1: dollar contract in twenty twenty five, I could pay him
- 29:43Speaker 1: that fifty million dollars in salary game checks and simply
- 29:47Speaker 1: pay all of that fifty million dollars on the cap
- 29:51Speaker 1: in twenty twenty five. But if I wanted to manipulate
- 29:53Speaker 1: that number to its extreme, I could pay the difference
- 29:57Speaker 1: between his fifty million dollar salary and the league's minimum salary,
- 30:02Speaker 1: which max is out around one point three million for
- 30:05Speaker 1: a veteran who is at least seven seasons into his
- 30:08Speaker 1: NFL career, and then convert the rest of that money
- 30:12Speaker 1: into assigning bonus with four void years attached to the
- 30:17Speaker 1: end of his one year deal to impact the salary
- 30:19Speaker 1: cap as little as possible in the short term. So
- 30:23Speaker 1: using that second method, the bonus could be spread up
- 30:26Speaker 1: to over five years on the salary cap, meaning that
- 30:28Speaker 1: that fifty million dollar player would only cost around ten
- 30:32Speaker 1: million against that twoy twenty five salary cap. Now, we've
- 30:36Speaker 1: seen the Eagles and Howie Roseman do this a number
- 30:39Speaker 1: of times with one particular guy, which is Lane Johnson.
- 30:42Speaker 1: They've done it with a number of veterans over the years,
- 30:44Speaker 1: whether it was Fletcher Cox, Brandon Graham, they've done it
- 30:47Speaker 1: with over the years. Len I Hope I explained that
- 30:50Speaker 1: right for Oh yeah, that actually, I think that's very helpful. Yeah,
- 30:53Speaker 1: to be honest with you. So that is what the
- 30:56Speaker 1: NFL is going to be looking into. The Eagles have
- 30:58Speaker 1: been successful with this. The Eagles have been successful in
- 31:02Speaker 1: a number of different ways on the field, whether it
- 31:04Speaker 1: was the Tush push that we talked about last week
- 31:06Speaker 1: on the show with Eric. The Eagles have been successful
- 31:09Speaker 1: from a contractual standpoint in terms of being able to
- 31:12Speaker 1: keep their veteran talent as long as they do because
- 31:17Speaker 1: of salary cap manipulations. It's all there, it's all their
- 31:21Speaker 1: lend for them. I mean, there are loopholes and they
- 31:24Speaker 1: exploit them for good or for worse. It seems like
- 31:27Speaker 1: for worse now because the NFL and other other teams
- 31:31Speaker 1: are going to be looking into, Okay, what's really going
- 31:33Speaker 1: on here and the fact that this Philadelphia Eagles team, consistently,
- 31:36Speaker 1: year after year after year, has been able to manipulate
- 31:41Speaker 1: this to their benefit. And we've seen a team who
- 31:45Speaker 1: is consistently relevant in the NFL year after year, consistently
- 31:50Speaker 1: relevant within their division, even though no team in the
- 31:53Speaker 1: NFC East has won the division back to back years
- 31:57Speaker 1: since like two thousand and four, I believe it was.
- 32:00Speaker 2: It's not like the Eagles are like, you know, just constantly,
- 32:03Speaker 2: you know, going fifteen and one every year or something
- 32:06Speaker 2: like that. I mean, and have like there's in and again.
- 32:10Speaker 2: I don't know how a lot of the salary things work,
- 32:13Speaker 2: but you know you look at like and again, different sport,
- 32:16Speaker 2: different salary cap, but MLS and every time there's a
- 32:19Speaker 2: big time European player, whether it's Messy or just whoever
- 32:23Speaker 2: that comes over, it seems like they go to Miami
- 32:26Speaker 2: and I have the same reaction all the time. How
- 32:28Speaker 2: is this one team able to afford all these people?
- 32:33Speaker 2: And you know there's loopholes. There's loopholes in every sport,
- 32:37Speaker 2: every you know CBA that these teams exploit. And Okay,
- 32:41Speaker 2: why aren't other teams doing it?
- 32:43Speaker 4: Then?
- 32:44Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm sure other teams are doing it, and you know,
- 32:47Speaker 2: so I don't know, I just don't understand if if
- 32:51Speaker 2: you think somebody's getting an advantage, maybe you hire somebody
- 32:54Speaker 2: from their organization and say, hey, show us how to
- 32:56Speaker 2: do that, yes, and then you know, then you're in
- 32:59Speaker 2: on it, Like I don't you know, I don't know
- 33:01Speaker 2: why you'd want to stop that when it's easier just
- 33:03Speaker 2: to get somebody to, you know, show you what to do.
- 33:06Speaker 3: And I'm sure the Eagles are far from the only team.
- 33:08Speaker 1: Difference, right. It ramped up though during twenty twenty during
- 33:13Speaker 1: COVID because I mean, yeah, the idea of that hard
- 33:16Speaker 1: cap it made sense until COVID. Now teams are well
- 33:19Speaker 1: aware of how salary conversions and void years can be
- 33:23Speaker 1: used to manipulate the current cap system. So I guess
- 33:28Speaker 1: what Roger Goodell basically was referring to and really wanting
- 33:32Speaker 1: to look into that quote integrity question that you know
- 33:35Speaker 1: members of the league are asking themselves is how the
- 33:38Speaker 1: NFL treats the accounting of signing bonuses and or roster
- 33:44Speaker 1: bonus dollars on the cap and whether or not that
- 33:47Speaker 1: should potentially be changed under the next collective bargaining agreement.
- 33:50Speaker 1: I think that's really where this is going to go,
- 33:53Speaker 1: because again, because the Philadelphia Eagles have been so good
- 33:56Speaker 1: at this manipulation here.
- 33:58Speaker 2: To me, it just sounds like you're trying to penelize
- 34:00Speaker 2: someone for being smart and going using the system that
- 34:03Speaker 2: you know, their rules. I mean, if that was that
- 34:06Speaker 2: big of a deal, they should have made it so
- 34:08Speaker 2: that that was never even a possibility in the first
- 34:10Speaker 2: place for any team to exploit. So I mean, sorry
- 34:13Speaker 2: that he's poking holes in your you know, in your
- 34:16Speaker 2: your cap and the way you do things. But you know,
- 34:19Speaker 2: I don't know, again, you're penalizing somebody for being smart,
- 34:23Speaker 2: which is crazy to.
- 34:25Speaker 1: Me, Len I don't think the NFL has necessarily been
- 34:28Speaker 1: the smartest organization and group of individuals in that front office.
- 34:32Speaker 2: I mean, no, this is true, but you know, I
- 34:36Speaker 2: don't know you would think I don't know. I just
- 34:39Speaker 2: look at the NFL as this unstoppable juggernaut, and you
- 34:44Speaker 2: would just assume that in every position, whether it's you know,
- 34:47Speaker 2: rules committee or the accountants or whatever, you're just able
- 34:51Speaker 2: to hire the best of the best of the best
- 34:53Speaker 2: of the best to make sure that this golden goose
- 34:56Speaker 2: that you have continues on just making un godly amounts
- 35:00Speaker 2: of money for you and your and your your teams.
- 35:04Speaker 2: So I don't know, I just don't understand how they
- 35:06Speaker 2: don't already have those people in place.
- 35:08Speaker 1: It's amazing. It's amazing that they don't. You know, it's
- 35:10Speaker 1: a multi billion dollar organization and they don't have this
- 35:15Speaker 1: figured out. But it's a certainly a storyline we're going
- 35:19Speaker 1: to be following here at the PST podcast show. Whenever
- 35:22Speaker 1: a news breaks about it, we're obviously going to be
- 35:24Speaker 1: talking about it here. But then before I let you go,
- 35:27Speaker 1: I want folks to know that they can reach out
- 35:29Speaker 1: to us over email Philadelphia Sports Table at gmail dot com.
- 35:33Speaker 1: You can write us an email if you have a
- 35:37Speaker 1: reaction to anything that we've been talking about here, or
- 35:39Speaker 1: if you'd like us to dive into any specific issue
- 35:42Speaker 1: within the world of Philly sports or the sports world
- 35:44Speaker 1: in general. We'd love to hear from you again, Philadelphia
- 35:47Speaker 1: Sports Table at gmail dot com. So, my friend, I'm
- 35:52Speaker 1: gonna let you go. Do you have any parting words
- 35:54Speaker 1: before we get blg on here to talk more eagles?
- 35:57Speaker 2: I don't weather get warmer and you know, maybe not
- 36:02Speaker 2: rain on every single day that I'm off, Yes, that
- 36:04Speaker 2: would be nice as well. But yeah, no, other than that,
- 36:07Speaker 2: I got nothing.
- 36:09Speaker 1: You haven't been able to get in the backyard, huh
- 36:10Speaker 1: because of the rain and stuff to get stuff done.
- 36:12Speaker 2: But no, I've been able to cut like every four
- 36:15Speaker 2: days that I work, it's beautiful.
- 36:17Speaker 3: Yeah, every four days that.
- 36:18Speaker 2: I'm off, it rains, and like like I just like,
- 36:21Speaker 2: I'm just looking at my grass, going when am I
- 36:23Speaker 2: going to be able to do this again?
- 36:26Speaker 3: So yeah, that that kind of stuff.
- 36:28Speaker 1: I had something interesting, And I could say this because
- 36:30Speaker 1: I know the guy doesn't listen, but my next door
- 36:32Speaker 1: neighbor he not only not only did he mentioned to
- 36:35Speaker 1: his son, who then mentioned to my daughter about how
- 36:39Speaker 1: high our grass was at some point, which by the way,
- 36:41Speaker 1: was only about maybe three four inches because of the
- 36:45Speaker 1: rain that we saw, you know, this past month, tons
- 36:48Speaker 1: of rain. So I have. I was able to get
- 36:50Speaker 1: it cut down, and then he actually said to me
- 36:52Speaker 1: this past week, He's like, oh, the lawn's looking good there, Jeff, Yeah,
- 36:56Speaker 1: so you're cutting it shorter. I have a I have
- 36:58Speaker 1: a neighbor who is carrying way too much about my
- 37:01Speaker 1: lawn and how it looks. Lynne.
- 37:04Speaker 2: I mean, uh, just go in the middle of the night, whatever,
- 37:08Speaker 2: whatever you can pour on grass to kill it, Just
- 37:11Speaker 2: just do that.
- 37:12Speaker 1: His cameras everywhere those Yeah, he's got cameras everywhere. And
- 37:17Speaker 1: he shot me off a text yesterday. I swear to God,
- 37:20Speaker 1: asking you you've seen my backyard area. We have neighbors
- 37:23Speaker 1: that have fences, and so it's like it's like we
- 37:26Speaker 1: actually have two thirds of a fence already in our backyard.
- 37:29Speaker 1: He asked if we wanted to like go in and
- 37:31Speaker 1: split putting up the other part of the fence. So
- 37:34Speaker 1: now he doesn't even want to see us, and he
- 37:36Speaker 1: wants us to help him pay for it.
- 37:41Speaker 2: You know, it's a shame that you're that you're in
- 37:43Speaker 2: the field that you're in where you you have to
- 37:46Speaker 2: be a person, because like you had my job, you
- 37:49Speaker 2: could literally tell him and I'm assuming we're going to
- 37:52Speaker 2: keep this clean.
- 37:54Speaker 1: Yeah, we can't.
- 37:55Speaker 2: Yeah, so I won't say what's in my head, but
- 37:58Speaker 2: I think you know we're just.
- 37:59Speaker 1: F off, you know, yeah, more or less. Yes, all right, buddy,
- 38:03Speaker 1: Well I'm gonna let you go. We're gonna take a break, everybody.
- 38:06Speaker 1: When we come back, we're gonna be talking to Brandon
- 38:09Speaker 1: leag Out and from Bleeding Green Nation dot com stick
- 38:11Speaker 1: with us and now on the table and joining us
- 38:19Speaker 1: from Bleedinggreen Nation dot com to dive into this Philadelphia
- 38:23Speaker 1: Eagles off season and what is going to be happening
- 38:26Speaker 1: with this team as we were looking forward to the
- 38:28Speaker 1: twenty twenty five twenty twenty six season. Again from Bleeding
- 38:31Speaker 1: Green Nation dot com. We've got our good friend who's
- 38:34Speaker 1: been coming on for so many years, Brandon leag Out
- 38:36Speaker 1: and blg Man, thanks so much for jumping on this week.
- 38:39Speaker 3: Happy to join.
- 38:40Speaker 4: Can't believe we're kind of already here. Yeah, the point
- 38:43Speaker 4: of Eagles win the Super Bowl and you just don't
- 38:45Speaker 4: get like a whole lot of time to really like
- 38:47Speaker 4: revel in that in terms of just calendar just keeps
- 38:50Speaker 4: on going and going.
- 38:52Speaker 1: But here we are, here, we are exactly and you
- 38:54Speaker 1: were at the Novacare complex yesterday we were talking about
- 38:57Speaker 1: it before hitting the record button. Just real interesting to
- 39:01Speaker 1: be back to see some of these new guys out
- 39:03Speaker 1: on the field, and you know, it's amazing. The season
- 39:06Speaker 1: is going to be here before we know it. Yeah.
- 39:08Speaker 4: Again, it's such a short amount of time that you
- 39:11Speaker 4: really get to like enjoy it. But at the same time,
- 39:15Speaker 4: the good news is that the twenty twenty five Eagles,
- 39:18Speaker 4: who could be good and have a chance to do
- 39:20Speaker 4: something special obviously given what they did last year, that
- 39:24Speaker 4: is going to be here before we know it.
- 39:26Speaker 1: Yep. Absolutely, Well, let's get this discussion started here, and
- 39:30Speaker 1: I wanted to get into the news that Roger Goodell
- 39:34Speaker 1: in the NFL front offices kind of let us in
- 39:37Speaker 1: on and Mike Florio in one of his articles this
- 39:40Speaker 1: past week really put out there for the masses. Lenn
- 39:43Speaker 1: and I were just talking about this and wanted to
- 39:45Speaker 1: get your take as well. Blg at how the NFL
- 39:48Speaker 1: is looking at possibly reassessing the salary cap system, how
- 39:52Speaker 1: well it's working, whether teams are operating within the quote
- 39:55Speaker 1: spirit of that system, and it seems obvious that this
- 39:59Speaker 1: is based on the Philadelphia Eagles front office and Howie
- 40:02Speaker 1: Roseman and how they've been just able to find loop
- 40:05Speaker 1: holes to keep and extend really talented players and veteran players.
- 40:09Speaker 1: I'm wondering what are your thoughts on the NFL making
- 40:11Speaker 1: a push to potentially change the salary cap system here
- 40:15Speaker 1: based on what the Philadelphia Eagles do from season to season.
- 40:18Speaker 4: Yeah, well, the timing certainly isn't really I would say,
- 40:21Speaker 4: good look. Yeah, wake of the Toush push, which obviously failed,
- 40:26Speaker 4: it's kind of hard not to think the Eagles are
- 40:29Speaker 4: being targeted in some way. And ultimately, I don't think
- 40:33Speaker 4: it's just about that. In fairness, I do think that's
- 40:37Speaker 4: an element. I'm not going to say it's not, but
- 40:39Speaker 4: I do think the problem that I think some owners
- 40:42Speaker 4: are having with this system is that, and it's pathetic.
- 40:46Speaker 4: To be clear, I'm not defending them, but I think
- 40:48Speaker 4: their stance would be that, you know, the Eagles have
- 40:50Speaker 4: this advantage because of how cash forward they're willing to be,
- 40:54Speaker 4: as opposed to, you know fully just worrying about the cap,
- 40:58Speaker 4: you know, and taking on more cash than other teams do.
- 41:01Speaker 4: And I think some of the owners who don't want
- 41:04Speaker 4: to be spending as much are annoyed by that. They
- 41:06Speaker 4: don't want to have to spend that cast that same level,
- 41:08Speaker 4: which again is pathetic. And why are you getting into
- 41:11Speaker 4: the sports ownership world if that's the case. But I
- 41:16Speaker 4: think that's where it's coming from, and I think that's
- 41:17Speaker 4: going to be, you know, the impetus for a kind
- 41:19Speaker 4: of change. There is these owners who don't want to
- 41:21Speaker 4: spend that cash. I want the system to change, So
- 41:24Speaker 4: not just about targeting the Eagles, but certainly part of it.
- 41:28Speaker 1: Yeah. Absolutely, you make a really great point there too.
- 41:30Speaker 1: Why be an owner? Why get into this business if
- 41:33Speaker 1: you're not willing to do what you need to do
- 41:36Speaker 1: to win at the end of the day, just like
- 41:38Speaker 1: the Philadelphia Eagles do. But moving along with the conversation here,
- 41:43Speaker 1: I wanted to dive into Nick Sirianni with you, BLG
- 41:46Speaker 1: because he has received, as we know, a contract extension
- 41:49Speaker 1: from Howie Roseman and Jeffrey Lurie, and his evolution as
- 41:54Speaker 1: a head coach is pretty remarkable in my opinion, how
- 41:57Speaker 1: he's really leaving his mark so early in his NFL
- 42:01Speaker 1: head coaching tenure. Just on the league in general. You
- 42:04Speaker 1: have been behind the scenes, my friend, You have heard him,
- 42:08Speaker 1: you have seen how he acts. You talk to other
- 42:10Speaker 1: players and you talk to your sources as well. Is
- 42:14Speaker 1: this really a coach who has taken things to the
- 42:17Speaker 1: next level in terms of their growth, in terms of
- 42:19Speaker 1: what type of person they are, how they relate to
- 42:21Speaker 1: their players, or has he kind of been the product of,
- 42:24Speaker 1: you know, quote luck maybe having the roster that he
- 42:27Speaker 1: has as well as having a really great front office
- 42:31Speaker 1: with vision as well. What are your thoughts here, BLG.
- 42:34Speaker 4: Yeah, I don't think it's fair to just say it's
- 42:36Speaker 4: luck just because of how much he has won. The
- 42:39Speaker 4: degree to which he has won, yep, you know, like,
- 42:41Speaker 4: what's it the fifth highest winning percentage ever from a
- 42:45Speaker 4: head coach.
- 42:45Speaker 3: You know, he's up there. It's like he's just or he's.
- 42:47Speaker 4: Like just behind like John Madden and Vince Lombardi, these
- 42:50Speaker 4: like crazy names right that you're looking at on that.
- 42:52Speaker 1: List and you're like, how are you in Philadelphia here?
- 42:55Speaker 4: Exactly? Yeah, it's just it's wild and so you know.
- 42:59Speaker 4: But at the same time, I do believe believe there's
- 43:01Speaker 4: a difference between correlation and causation. I think some of
- 43:05Speaker 4: the biggest, most fervent Sirianni supporters, I think like maybe
- 43:08Speaker 4: don't always acknowledge that and that you know, there's it's
- 43:11Speaker 4: a great ecosystem here for him. And again, to his credit,
- 43:14Speaker 4: I think he's taken advantage of that and done what
- 43:16Speaker 4: he's needed to do within that. And certainly when you
- 43:19Speaker 4: hear the players talk, you see a lot of support
- 43:22Speaker 4: for him. You hear a lot of support for him,
- 43:24Speaker 4: So you know, it's a really good sign. I just
- 43:27Speaker 4: think that, you know, for being honest about it, Like
- 43:29Speaker 4: if you're ranking the drivers for this team's success, like
- 43:33Speaker 4: he's not number one, he's not number two, and that's okay.
- 43:35Speaker 4: He doesn't have to be based on the ecosystem that's here.
- 43:38Speaker 4: But you know, let's just call a spade a spade
- 43:40Speaker 4: and like not act like you know, he is the
- 43:41Speaker 4: one driving this thing as much as he is in
- 43:45Speaker 4: a position where he is doing his role, and he's
- 43:48Speaker 4: doing his role seemingly at a pretty high level. You know.
- 43:52Speaker 4: I just think it's gonna be interesting to see, obviously,
- 43:54Speaker 4: how you handle success as a big challenge for teams,
- 43:57Speaker 4: not just how you handle failure as they did coming
- 43:59Speaker 4: off with two only twenty three seasons, but how you
- 44:01Speaker 4: handle the success. They didn't really handle success in an
- 44:04Speaker 4: amazing way coming off their last Super Bowl exactly, so
- 44:07Speaker 4: you know that's that's the big challenge for him up next.
- 44:09Speaker 1: Yeah, great, great points for sure. And I also wanted
- 44:13Speaker 1: to get into during our discussion here some of the
- 44:16Speaker 1: offseason acquisitions, whether it's through the draft, whether it's through
- 44:19Speaker 1: free agency, just picking up some other players who may
- 44:22Speaker 1: be contributors to this team in the future. Again, you've
- 44:26Speaker 1: been around some of these guys here and there, and
- 44:28Speaker 1: especially at OTAs here. This week, the Eagles decided to
- 44:33Speaker 1: sign edge rusher Aziz Ojelari, who received the biggest veteran
- 44:38Speaker 1: free agent contract from the Philadelphia Eagles. He has had
- 44:42Speaker 1: health issues, which is the biggest knock on him at
- 44:45Speaker 1: this point, but I mean he's a He's a damn
- 44:47Speaker 1: good pass rusher in this league from what we have
- 44:49Speaker 1: seen thus far. You put up a recent piece on
- 44:52Speaker 1: Bleedinggreen nation dot com about Ojalari, and I wanted to
- 44:57Speaker 1: get into this a little bit more, just based on
- 45:00Speaker 1: and the contract that he was given by the Eagles,
- 45:03Speaker 1: possibly what they believe in him in terms of what
- 45:06Speaker 1: he can do in terms of contributions. Do you think
- 45:09Speaker 1: he could be a large maybe middle of the road
- 45:12Speaker 1: or a small contributor on defense this coming season. BLG,
- 45:16Speaker 1: what are you thinking?
- 45:17Speaker 4: Yeah, I'm expecting more towards middle of the road. I
- 45:20Speaker 4: do think, you know, he could be a solid contributor
- 45:23Speaker 4: and look for the contract one year, four million dollars
- 45:25Speaker 4: like obviously worth it, worth the risk. Even if he
- 45:27Speaker 4: doesn't work out, Even he turns out like what Bryce
- 45:29Speaker 4: Huff was obviously last year, which is not good.
- 45:32Speaker 3: Then that's fine.
- 45:33Speaker 4: He took a totally acceptable risk for that kind of
- 45:36Speaker 4: contract and a player who is what twenty four years
- 45:39Speaker 4: old at least was at the time of signing. But
- 45:42Speaker 4: that very fact also raises like buyer butware flags that
- 45:46Speaker 4: you know, why it was he available for so cheap
- 45:49Speaker 4: in the free agent market at such a young age
- 45:51Speaker 4: for a player who's had production and yeah he's had injuries, sure,
- 45:54Speaker 4: but still like there's other players who had injury issues
- 45:56Speaker 4: that have gotten more money then he did, certainly at
- 46:00Speaker 4: one year, four million. So you know, watching him from
- 46:04Speaker 4: last year, you know, I came away a little like
- 46:08Speaker 4: less overall impressed in terms of being you know, a
- 46:11Speaker 4: difference maker at the position. But I saw a solid player,
- 46:14Speaker 4: and I think that's what the Eagles are going to
- 46:15Speaker 4: get I'm guessing this could be a situation where he has,
- 46:19Speaker 4: like again, a solid kind of year for this team
- 46:21Speaker 4: and then maybe goes and test the market again, finds
- 46:23Speaker 4: a new contract elsewhere. But for this year, I think
- 46:25Speaker 4: he can be a like against good, solid kind of
- 46:28Speaker 4: contributor in the Eagles pass Russ rotation. I think ideally
- 46:32Speaker 4: you would want him to be like your third best
- 46:35Speaker 4: rusher behind Nolan Smith and behind jilex h people to
- 46:38Speaker 4: make that leap.
- 46:39Speaker 1: Yeah, it also leads me to believe that, you know,
- 46:42Speaker 1: Vic Fangio has some say in this as well, and
- 46:45Speaker 1: you would probably know this, you know, better than anybody
- 46:47Speaker 1: out there, being a member of you know, a credentialed
- 46:51Speaker 1: Eagles reporter, you know, behind the scenes. It seems like,
- 46:54Speaker 1: you know, you look at the NFL Draft and we're
- 46:55Speaker 1: certainly going to get into some NFL or some Eagles
- 46:58Speaker 1: draft pieces and what they're contributions may be. But with
- 47:01Speaker 1: Vic Fangio and how much influence he has behind the
- 47:05Speaker 1: scenes in terms of acquisitions defensively and what he sees
- 47:08Speaker 1: in them and how they can contribute to his particular system,
- 47:12Speaker 1: and I'm wondering, do you think that's the case, is
- 47:14Speaker 1: he's possibly seeing something in Ojulari where he's like, you
- 47:18Speaker 1: know what, he is going to be a contributor based
- 47:20Speaker 1: on what I'm able to do for him, how I'm
- 47:23Speaker 1: able to coach him. Maybe he is coachable to an extent.
- 47:26Speaker 1: I don't think we necessarily know that one hundred percent
- 47:28Speaker 1: short yet, But I don't know how much is vic Fangio.
- 47:31Speaker 1: Do you think playing into the acquisitions that we've seen
- 47:35Speaker 1: here in the off season.
- 47:36Speaker 4: Yeah, I think that's a really good question, and one
- 47:38Speaker 4: will certainly find the answer too, because you saw it again.
- 47:42Speaker 4: I'll bring up Bryce Toff like that is a guy
- 47:44Speaker 4: that fake Fangio clearly did not love, like from the jump,
- 47:48Speaker 4: from the standpoint of in training camp and multiple times
- 47:51Speaker 4: talking about how he needs to get better at run defense. Yes,
- 47:54Speaker 4: this is your top free agent signing. Yes, like, this
- 47:56Speaker 4: isn't just like a guy, Oh you're taking a flyer on.
- 47:59Speaker 4: This is the guy you signed with all your resources,
- 48:02Speaker 4: got a bigger contract than Sakwon Barkley last year. Yes,
- 48:05Speaker 4: to be like, this is our guy. You know, that's
- 48:07Speaker 4: not a guy who you bring in with like, oh,
- 48:09Speaker 4: you know, if we piece it together, there's questions here, No,
- 48:11Speaker 4: like you're paying for a proven kind of commodity in theory,
- 48:14Speaker 4: but clearly that wasn't the case. And certainly we saw
- 48:17Speaker 4: Rice off and play in the preseason, and then we
- 48:19Speaker 4: saw him lose playing time. You got hurts that kind
- 48:21Speaker 4: of factored in there, but ultimately healthy scratch in the
- 48:24Speaker 4: Super Bowl. You know, a lot of that speaks to
- 48:26Speaker 4: and and a big reason why I think, you know,
- 48:28Speaker 4: his outlook moving forward is questionable is because I don't
- 48:31Speaker 4: think Vic Finjia wants to play that guy. Yeah, and
- 48:34Speaker 4: in a way, you know, that's a good thing from
- 48:36Speaker 4: the standpoint of Vic is not going to be you know,
- 48:39Speaker 4: committing the sunk cost fallacy here. If you can play,
- 48:45Speaker 4: he'll play it, and if you can't play, he's not
- 48:47Speaker 4: going to play you. And it's really that simple. So
- 48:48Speaker 4: I think we're going to see here that you know,
- 48:50Speaker 4: how the depth heart sorts out will be based on merit,
- 48:53Speaker 4: which is you know, again a good thing. It's not
- 48:55Speaker 4: it's less in other places. You know, there could be
- 48:57Speaker 4: more politicking and and things like that, but in Vic's case,
- 49:01Speaker 4: I think he genuinely just goes with who he trust
- 49:04Speaker 4: and who he doesn't.
- 49:04Speaker 1: Yeah, And look, I've been trying to assess here some
- 49:09Speaker 1: of the incoming rookies to see if they're gonna have
- 49:12Speaker 1: the opportunity to be real contributors this coming season on
- 49:15Speaker 1: the field as well, BLG, I mean, safety Andrew mccooba
- 49:19Speaker 1: seems like he'll be in the mix to get some
- 49:21Speaker 1: good playing time in Vic Fangio's defense. But in terms
- 49:24Speaker 1: of the rookies who were just drafted, who do you
- 49:27Speaker 1: think may see significant playing time just like Quinnon, Mitchell
- 49:31Speaker 1: and Cooper dejen did last season? Are you seeing that
- 49:35Speaker 1: at all or is there an opportunity for these rookies
- 49:37Speaker 1: to really have a significant impact this season.
- 49:41Speaker 3: I think it'd be really.
- 49:41Speaker 4: Hard to like count on them this year's rookies having
- 49:44Speaker 4: the impact that yeah, Quinnon and Cooper did, just because
- 49:49Speaker 4: it's not the norm. Like that's that's like the incredible
- 49:52Speaker 4: top possible outcome you could realistically hope for. And maybe
- 49:55Speaker 4: even more than that hes got out of those players
- 49:58Speaker 4: last year. And you know, even if the Eagles made
- 50:01Speaker 4: like great picks this year totally you know, did their
- 50:05Speaker 4: part to make the right picks, it could just work
- 50:07Speaker 4: out that it's not going to happen that fast for
- 50:09Speaker 4: these guys.
- 50:09Speaker 3: Right, So I just like this, you.
- 50:11Speaker 4: Know, lower the expectations a little bit from a standpoint
- 50:14Speaker 4: of it might take a little bit of time, not
- 50:16Speaker 4: even necessarily after the season, but through the course of
- 50:19Speaker 4: the season. Certainly in year two we saw no One
- 50:21Speaker 4: Smith get a lot better over the course of a season. So,
- 50:24Speaker 4: you know, John Campbell obviously top contender. We just don't
- 50:27Speaker 4: know exactly when he's going to be healthy. Still not
- 50:29Speaker 4: practicing yet, that could change by training camp. We don't
- 50:32Speaker 4: We don't know, we haven't heard anything on that, so
- 50:34Speaker 4: it's just you know, merely guessing at this point. When
- 50:37Speaker 4: it comes to Makuba, you know he was with the
- 50:38Speaker 4: first team defense on Wednesday when the Eagles were practicing.
- 50:43Speaker 4: Now you know the Eagles were missing reblanking ship there,
- 50:47Speaker 4: so we don't fully know what that looks like. So
- 50:50Speaker 4: we'll see, you know, when if he's back, how the
- 50:52Speaker 4: starters go, whether it's him or Sidney Brown up. But
- 50:55Speaker 4: I mean, look, last year, Vic Fangio, whant I go
- 50:57Speaker 4: back to that trust conversation, did not trust Sidney Brown
- 51:01Speaker 4: to play, and he was playing Tristan McCollum and Avonte
- 51:04Speaker 4: Maddox over him when there were chances for Sidney Brown
- 51:06Speaker 4: to play now. Part of that is that Sidney Brown
- 51:08Speaker 4: missed so much time in the off season last year.
- 51:10Speaker 4: He didn't really get the chance to prove that trust
- 51:12Speaker 4: to Vic Fangio, and he will get that this year.
- 51:14Speaker 4: So he has this opportunity to earn that from him.
- 51:17Speaker 3: But it's not a given.
- 51:18Speaker 4: And obviously Vic Kanjo was not here when the Egles
- 51:21Speaker 4: drafted Sidney Brown. He was here they drafted Andrew mccoobaugh.
- 51:24Speaker 4: So I think mccouba, you know, it's in a good
- 51:26Speaker 4: spot there to take that job and ultimately end up
- 51:30Speaker 4: with it. But obviously, you know, Sidney Brown is not
- 51:33Speaker 4: going to go down easy. Hes could also sign a
- 51:35Speaker 4: veteran fre agent still too, if mccuba struggles a bit.
- 51:39Speaker 4: But for now, I think mccouba, you know, probably looking
- 51:41Speaker 4: like the best chance at projecting a role, especially given
- 51:44Speaker 4: the uncertainty of Joha Campbell's health.
- 51:46Speaker 1: Yeah, I think that's I think that's some great analysis there.
- 51:49Speaker 1: And again, folks talking to brandonly go out and from
- 51:50Speaker 1: Bleedinggreen Nation dot com. Follow him on Twitter slash x
- 51:54Speaker 1: at Brandon Gout and if you are not already, I'm
- 51:56Speaker 1: sure if you're listening to us or watching US. You
- 51:59Speaker 1: already know about Brandon in BLG and Bleeding Green nation
- 52:01Speaker 1: dot com fantastic, fantastic content about Philadelphia Eagles on a consistent,
- 52:06Speaker 1: consistent daily basis. So I wanted to move over to
- 52:09Speaker 1: the offense at this point BLG. I mean, the offense
- 52:12Speaker 1: last year, as we know, so potent. We saw what
- 52:14Speaker 1: they did to the Kansas City Chiefs in the Super Bowl.
- 52:17Speaker 1: And as we discuss what might we see this season,
- 52:22Speaker 1: some saying that we're not going to see the same
- 52:24Speaker 1: Saquon Barkley that we saw last year. The offense won't
- 52:27Speaker 1: be as good. There may be some regression here or there.
- 52:29Speaker 1: Some say the offense is still going to dominate the
- 52:32Speaker 1: league like they did last year in various ways. How
- 52:36Speaker 1: are you seeing this? What should the expectations be for
- 52:39Speaker 1: this Eagles offense coming into this season?
- 52:43Speaker 4: There's like eight or nine players that have ever had
- 52:45Speaker 4: more touches in the single season than Saquon Barkley did
- 52:47Speaker 4: last year. So you know, it's a pretty special thing
- 52:51Speaker 4: he did last season, and it's to me, it's the
- 52:53Speaker 4: best running back season in NFL history. So you know,
- 52:56Speaker 4: the standard of you know, it's hard to reach that again,
- 53:00Speaker 4: probably impossible. Maybe the top that so there's probably.
- 53:03Speaker 3: Only room to go down. But even so, even if that's.
- 53:05Speaker 4: The case, there's still you know, a lot of room
- 53:08Speaker 4: from that in the very bottoms. And I think Saquan
- 53:10Speaker 4: will be pretty good still, but I do think that
- 53:13Speaker 4: it might be hard to rely on him to this
- 53:15Speaker 4: same extent that they did. And it seems kind of
- 53:19Speaker 4: inevitable that the Egles are going to have to pass
- 53:21Speaker 4: the ball a bit more than they did last year.
- 53:24Speaker 4: I'm not saying it has to be suddenly Gales dropping back,
- 53:26Speaker 4: you know and chucking it like thirty five times a game,
- 53:29Speaker 4: something extreme, but it's probably gonna be up to a
- 53:30Speaker 4: little bit more than it was last year, especially as
- 53:34Speaker 4: they're playing tougher teams too, and might be trailing in
- 53:36Speaker 4: certain spots and not having the game script to be
- 53:39Speaker 4: as favorable as it may have been for them a
- 53:41Speaker 4: lot of the time last year. So certainly, you know,
- 53:44Speaker 4: I'm expecting differences there. You have a new offensive coordinator
- 53:47Speaker 4: and Kevin Patulo, who I think has kind of been
- 53:51Speaker 4: like a little bit unfairly labeled just as like Nick Sirianni,
- 53:55Speaker 4: you know, like like Buddy and like has no kind
- 53:57Speaker 4: of image of his own, identity, of his own I mean,
- 54:01Speaker 4: he worked at other places before he teamed up with
- 54:03Speaker 4: Nick Sirianni in the NFL, so I think, you know,
- 54:06Speaker 4: he has his own ideas and you know, tweaks and
- 54:08Speaker 4: things that he can do. I'm not it's saying it's
- 54:09Speaker 4: a night and day offense, but I do think it'll
- 54:11Speaker 4: be interesting to see how it looks with a new
- 54:13Speaker 4: offensive coordinator. I mean, a lot of people didn't even
- 54:15Speaker 4: love Kellen Moore for most of the season, are a
- 54:17Speaker 4: frustrated with them with how the offense it's going at
- 54:19Speaker 4: times until the very end there really, so you know,
- 54:22Speaker 4: I think there's room to kind of get better from there.
- 54:25Speaker 4: And yeah, obviously you know, health is a big factor
- 54:27Speaker 4: as it goes with the offensive line and everything. He
- 54:30Speaker 4: does have good depth, I would say, mostly on the offense,
- 54:34Speaker 4: you know, and even adding some more tight end. We'll
- 54:37Speaker 4: see if Johan Dotson can kind of have more of
- 54:40Speaker 4: a role this year after not really doing too much
- 54:43Speaker 4: last year. I think targeted something like twenty two times
- 54:45Speaker 4: by Geland Hurts. Yeah, so that's something I'm keeping an
- 54:48Speaker 4: eye on as well. But overall, the big picture you know,
- 54:50Speaker 4: I think we should see an offense that is pretty
- 54:53Speaker 4: good again just because it's so talented. Yeah, and maybe
- 54:56Speaker 4: you can, you know, again add some tweaks.
- 54:58Speaker 1: In there, and in terms of adding to weeks, I'd
- 55:00Speaker 1: love to see more of the screen game being implemented.
- 55:03Speaker 1: This is a this is a team that really hasn't
- 55:05Speaker 1: implement offensive screens like running back screens to too much.
- 55:09Speaker 1: When you have a weapon like Saquon Barkley, and you've
- 55:11Speaker 1: even got aj Dillon coming in as well, I mean,
- 55:13Speaker 1: I can't see how they wouldn't go to or potentially
- 55:16Speaker 1: gravitate towards the screen game on offense this coming season.
- 55:20Speaker 1: That's something I've been thinking about.
- 55:22Speaker 4: Just one day of practice in May, but Will Shipley
- 55:24Speaker 4: was getting a lot of catches the practice, so I
- 55:28Speaker 4: don't know how many of them are screens, but you know,
- 55:30Speaker 4: being a target.
- 55:31Speaker 3: In the in the in the passing game.
- 55:33Speaker 4: We haven't seen running backs really have that here, especially
- 55:36Speaker 4: and Jalen Hurts has been and Nick Sirianni has been
- 55:38Speaker 4: head coach. Jale Hurts has been the quarterback, So that
- 55:40Speaker 4: is another element I think that, you know, it would
- 55:42Speaker 4: be nice to get a little bit more of that
- 55:43Speaker 4: mixed in.
- 55:44Speaker 1: Yeah, absolutely, all right, we'll be LG. I wanted to
- 55:46Speaker 1: dive into some overall NFL storylines that I know a
- 55:50Speaker 1: lot of US football fans have been following over the
- 55:52Speaker 1: course of this offseason. Here and the one storyline, and
- 55:56Speaker 1: it jumps from team to certain teams to team to team.
- 56:00Speaker 1: Here about how some of these veteran quarterbacks who are
- 56:04Speaker 1: going to and we may see this season on other teams,
- 56:08Speaker 1: how they're gonna fare this season. So I kind of
- 56:11Speaker 1: want to go through Geno Smith with you, Sam Darnold,
- 56:13Speaker 1: Russell Wilson, and then the one and only Daniel Jones
- 56:18Speaker 1: in Indiana. So I'm wondering if you can maybe give
- 56:21Speaker 1: us your take real quick on how these these veteran
- 56:25Speaker 1: quarterbacks in terms of these storylines, how they're gonna fare
- 56:28Speaker 1: with their new teams. So let's start off with Gino
- 56:30Speaker 1: Smith and the Raiders. How do you think he's gonna
- 56:32Speaker 1: fare this coming season? Yeah?
- 56:34Speaker 4: I like the Geno trade for the Seahawks one than
- 56:37Speaker 4: I really did for I mean, for the Raiders. I
- 56:40Speaker 4: think it makes some sense in the standpoint I they've
- 56:42Speaker 4: been just so bad for so long, so irrelevant really
- 56:45Speaker 4: for so long, that they're just trying to read some
- 56:48Speaker 4: kind of level of competency, and I think that's not
- 56:51Speaker 4: like the best way to build a championship team in
- 56:53Speaker 4: the long run, but I do respect it. I kind
- 56:55Speaker 4: of say the same thing about like the Jaggs dating
- 56:57Speaker 4: Travis Hunter. I don't think that's a smart trade for
- 56:59Speaker 4: them and the big picture. But from the standpoint of,
- 57:01Speaker 4: like Jackson are probably gonna be terrible anyway. I think
- 57:03Speaker 4: a lot of their fans know that that why not
- 57:05Speaker 4: get like a really exciting player that we can at
- 57:06Speaker 4: least like glom onto that. So I do think from
- 57:09Speaker 4: a standpoint of trying to get a little bit more
- 57:11Speaker 4: competitive for once and not just be such a laughingstock,
- 57:13Speaker 4: you know, does raise the floor there, But I don't like,
- 57:16Speaker 4: you know, what he does for their ceiling. And I'm
- 57:19Speaker 4: a lot less impressed with him than NFL Twitter and
- 57:22Speaker 4: mass seems to be there. So I'm not a huge
- 57:25Speaker 4: fan of this one.
- 57:26Speaker 1: All right, Well, what about Sam Donald had such a
- 57:29Speaker 1: fantastic season in Minnesota last year, He's now heading to
- 57:33Speaker 1: the Seahawks. How do you think he's gonna fare this
- 57:36Speaker 1: year on his new team?
- 57:38Speaker 4: Yeah, so I said I loved the I liked the
- 57:40Speaker 4: Gno Smith trade for the Seahawks signal, but then they
- 57:42Speaker 4: went out and signed Sam Donald, and I'm like, I
- 57:45Speaker 4: don't love that part of it. Like, I don't think
- 57:48Speaker 4: I think it's good to pivot away from Geno considering
- 57:50Speaker 4: I think they kind of just reached their ceiling with
- 57:53Speaker 4: him and there wasn't really more to see. But with
- 57:55Speaker 4: Sam Donald, I mean I just think, yeah, he was
- 57:59Speaker 4: great for the Vikings last year, right, but it's so
- 58:02Speaker 4: hard to shake like how that season ended too for
- 58:05Speaker 4: them and for him, where he kind of just looked
- 58:07Speaker 4: like like the year in the headlights like he has
- 58:09Speaker 4: other times in his career when he was younger. And
- 58:12Speaker 4: I don't think he's a difference maker for them, Like
- 58:14Speaker 4: he's posting good stats like he did for the Vikings
- 58:16Speaker 4: last year, But was anyone at any point like scared
- 58:18Speaker 4: about having to play Sam Donald and the Vikings, Like
- 58:20Speaker 4: I don't really think so, and just you know, to
- 58:23Speaker 4: kind of have that year, like quarterbacks have good years.
- 58:25Speaker 4: We know that in Philadelphia. We've seen that, like Nick Foles,
- 58:28Speaker 4: you know, like as twenty seven and two obviously goes
- 58:30Speaker 4: on to win a Super Bowl, but like he wasn't
- 58:31Speaker 4: a franchise quarterback right after twenty seven and two, so
- 58:34Speaker 4: and case Keenum previously for the Vikings, you know, has
- 58:37Speaker 4: that really good year and then get smacked by the
- 58:39Speaker 4: use of the championship game. So yeah, I'm buyer to
- 58:42Speaker 4: beware on that. They did draft jale and Milroe, which
- 58:44Speaker 4: I like a lot. So I think, you know, having
- 58:46Speaker 4: the two kind of options there, you see what shakes
- 58:48Speaker 4: out of that. I kind of like that approach as
- 58:50Speaker 4: a whole. But I'm just not high on Sam Donald.
- 58:53Speaker 1: Yeah, not high on Sam Donald at all. But let's
- 58:55Speaker 1: go inside the NFC East here with the New York Giants.
- 58:58Speaker 1: They acquire Russell Wilson. How do you think he's gonna fare?
- 59:03Speaker 4: I've been a long time Russell Wilson fan from afar
- 59:07Speaker 4: just because you know he's especially because having watched him
- 59:10Speaker 4: torment the Eagles for years, it's like, damn it, like
- 59:13Speaker 4: you can't stop this guy. It's so annoying. They finally
- 59:15Speaker 4: beat him for the first time last year on the Steelers.
- 59:18Speaker 4: Obviously he's not the same player he used to be
- 59:20Speaker 4: earlier in his career, but you know, I just don't
- 59:25Speaker 4: think this is gonna work out. Very I'm really hating
- 59:27Speaker 4: at all of these. Don't you look at the Giants schedule.
- 59:30Speaker 4: You know, it's Commanders, it's cow It's at Commanders at Cowboys, Chiefs,
- 59:35Speaker 4: Chargers at Saints, and then you get the Eagles game
- 59:37Speaker 4: there on Thursday night football run. Then yeah, it's a
- 59:41Speaker 4: it's a rough start. So I just feel like, and
- 59:43Speaker 4: how much even if Russ is like playing like kind
- 59:46Speaker 4: of like he did last year, like decent, a team
- 59:49Speaker 4: is not very good and they're gonna be losing and
- 59:52Speaker 4: at some point, like it might not even be his fault,
- 59:55Speaker 4: could be his fault, but it might not be, and
- 59:56Speaker 4: then they just want to, you know, turn the page
- 59:58Speaker 4: to Jackson Dart as they really should, and you know,
- 1:00:01Speaker 4: get him in there and see what he's got. So
- 1:00:03Speaker 4: I just don't think he is a very long leash,
- 1:00:05Speaker 4: especially considering they have a really difficult schedule.
- 1:00:08Speaker 1: Yeah, and last, but not least here in terms of
- 1:00:11Speaker 1: veteran quarterbacks going to their new teams, got Daniel Jones?
- 1:00:16Speaker 1: What does he beat out Anthony Richardson for the starting
- 1:00:19Speaker 1: job in Indy? How do you think Daniel Jones' career
- 1:00:22Speaker 1: is gonna go this season?
- 1:00:23Speaker 3: Here?
- 1:00:24Speaker 4: I don't think I'm like, I'm like, I'm like ninety
- 1:00:27Speaker 4: nine percent out on Daniel Jones in general, not like
- 1:00:30Speaker 4: one hundred percent out, just from the standpoint if he
- 1:00:32Speaker 4: went to like, let's say the Eagles, he went to
- 1:00:34Speaker 4: like a really good organization that had pieces in place
- 1:00:38Speaker 4: and stability, Like I'd be interested to see what that
- 1:00:40Speaker 4: looks like, you know, a little bit after he was
- 1:00:42Speaker 4: with the Giants and obviously their disaster, But I don't
- 1:00:46Speaker 4: know that the culture like that spot for him to
- 1:00:48Speaker 4: really take off and really kind of give him the
- 1:00:51Speaker 4: last chance to be any kind of good. So I
- 1:00:55Speaker 4: don't think he's gonna go well for him either, None
- 1:00:57Speaker 4: of these quarterbacks, clearly, I'm thinking it's going well for
- 1:01:00Speaker 4: Anthony Richardson is obviously incredibly talented, but I just man,
- 1:01:03Speaker 4: the bad Like the highs are very high in terms
- 1:01:06Speaker 4: of the talent he's able to do at a special
- 1:01:09Speaker 4: kind of level, but the lows are extremely low as well.
- 1:01:12Speaker 4: And you're like, he's completing what like forty two percent
- 1:01:14Speaker 4: of his passes or something insanely like that's that's just
- 1:01:17Speaker 4: not gonna cut it at all. You need more consistency
- 1:01:20Speaker 4: than that. So maybe Daniel Jones gets a chance to
- 1:01:23Speaker 4: play a decent amount. I could buy that, but I
- 1:01:25Speaker 4: just I don't really think it's going to be a
- 1:01:27Speaker 4: needle mover for the Colts.
- 1:01:28Speaker 1: Yeah, exactly, I don't think so either. It was a
- 1:01:30Speaker 1: tough offseason in terms of quarterback free agents and where
- 1:01:34Speaker 1: they were moving. It was really tough. So blg before
- 1:01:37Speaker 1: we let you go here, buddy, And it's really you know,
- 1:01:40Speaker 1: the question that we're all going to be asking, all
- 1:01:41Speaker 1: gonna be talking about the we we we wait for
- 1:01:46Speaker 1: that first game every season, and in the Dallas Cowboys
- 1:01:50Speaker 1: are going to be coming to Philadelphia and the Eagles
- 1:01:53Speaker 1: are going to be raising that Super Bowl banner, which
- 1:01:55Speaker 1: is going to be so sweet to have the Dallas
- 1:01:57Speaker 1: Cowboys on the sidelines while that is happening. Even though
- 1:02:00Speaker 1: I think the Eagles are a much better team than
- 1:02:03Speaker 1: the Cowboys heading into this season, they still have Dak
- 1:02:06Speaker 1: Prescott coming back. He's no slouch. The Commanders have a
- 1:02:09Speaker 1: really good team led by Jaden Daniels and a pretty
- 1:02:12Speaker 1: prolific offense. Even though I do think Jayden Daniels is
- 1:02:15Speaker 1: gonna take some steps back this season. Do you think
- 1:02:18Speaker 1: the Eagles are still the team to beat in the
- 1:02:20Speaker 1: NFC East this season, and can they be the first
- 1:02:22Speaker 1: team to win back to back division titles since they
- 1:02:25Speaker 1: were the last team to do it, you know, back
- 1:02:26Speaker 1: in the two thousands. What are your thoughts here?
- 1:02:29Speaker 4: Yeah, I appreciate that framing because that's like, if you're
- 1:02:31Speaker 4: gonna talk about the Eagles repeating as super Bowl champions,
- 1:02:34Speaker 4: probably gonna have to repeat as division champions first, right,
- 1:02:37Speaker 4: not necessarily, but probably would be a really good thing
- 1:02:40Speaker 4: to do, And it's incredibly hard to do it impossible
- 1:02:43Speaker 4: to do basically in this division as we've seen. So
- 1:02:46Speaker 4: you know, I think it's you almost have to be
- 1:02:48Speaker 4: like a sucker each year to be like the if
- 1:02:51Speaker 4: your team wins the division the year probably to be like, oh,
- 1:02:53Speaker 4: we're definitely gonna do it again, Like, how can you
- 1:02:55Speaker 4: possibly believe they're just one hundred percent gonna do that?
- 1:02:58Speaker 4: By virtue of no one does that? It is eventually
- 1:03:00Speaker 4: obviously it will be broken, but you just have to
- 1:03:03Speaker 4: keep betting against history each year to really truly believe that.
- 1:03:07Speaker 4: So look, you know, I think you outlined it well there.
- 1:03:10Speaker 4: I mean, I think the Giants are joking. I don't
- 1:03:12Speaker 4: think they're going to be a big factor at all,
- 1:03:13Speaker 4: and just their schedule is so tough. So then it's
- 1:03:16Speaker 4: you know, is it the Commanders, who I haven't really
- 1:03:19Speaker 4: loved their offseason. I think their draft was okay, but
- 1:03:22Speaker 4: I didn't really love the approach of you know, it
- 1:03:24Speaker 4: was getting older a lot. I know we're trying to
- 1:03:26Speaker 4: take advantage of Jayden Daniel's Brookiet window contract there, and
- 1:03:31Speaker 4: I respect that, and I think that makes some sense,
- 1:03:33Speaker 4: but you don't have to do it with like players
- 1:03:35Speaker 4: that are only thirty plus all like pretty much like
- 1:03:38Speaker 4: a lot of them were, and players who I question
- 1:03:41Speaker 4: if you know they're they're best football is behind them
- 1:03:44Speaker 4: at this point, certainly like Deebo Samuel. So yeah, I
- 1:03:48Speaker 4: just think maybe they could be in a mode where
- 1:03:50Speaker 4: they're thinking they're a little bit closer than they are.
- 1:03:53Speaker 4: And I think teams fall into the trap of thinking
- 1:03:55Speaker 4: you just get to pick up where you left off
- 1:03:56Speaker 4: last season, which is not how it works. You have
- 1:03:58Speaker 4: to go and climb the mountain. All again, that's for
- 1:04:00Speaker 4: legals as well, So I think they could be humbled
- 1:04:04Speaker 4: a bit this year. And I also I say that
- 1:04:07Speaker 4: was still saying that. I still think Kayden Dale's really
- 1:04:09Speaker 4: good and I think their long term projection could still
- 1:04:12Speaker 4: be good. But as like people like to say, the
- 1:04:14Speaker 4: probablyst isn't always linear, so it might just be more
- 1:04:16Speaker 4: of a step back year for them, and then all
- 1:04:17Speaker 4: of a sudden the twenty twenty six they're right back
- 1:04:19Speaker 4: at it, depending on how it goes. But so that's
- 1:04:22Speaker 4: Commanders and then the Cowboys. Yeah, like Dak's coming back,
- 1:04:25Speaker 4: that's huge obviously. Typically, you know, when Dak is healthy,
- 1:04:28Speaker 4: they're right in the mix for the division every single year. Now,
- 1:04:32Speaker 4: Dak did not look good before he got hurt last season,
- 1:04:35Speaker 4: and I think that is worth noting. And he's going
- 1:04:38Speaker 4: to be what age thirty two, aged thirty three here,
- 1:04:41Speaker 4: I wonder how much these injuries over the course of
- 1:04:44Speaker 4: his career have taken toll a little bit. They get
- 1:04:47Speaker 4: George Pickens, I know people are excited about that. I
- 1:04:49Speaker 4: think there's some buyer beware there and that he's talented.
- 1:04:52Speaker 4: But the Steelers typically don't move on from a wide
- 1:04:55Speaker 4: receiver and like really regret it at all typically, So
- 1:04:59Speaker 4: you know, I think they're to be kind of like,
- 1:05:01Speaker 4: you know, maybe a ten win, eight nine win, that
- 1:05:04Speaker 4: kind of somewhere in that in that mix. So I
- 1:05:06Speaker 4: do think it's would be competitive division. But I think
- 1:05:09Speaker 4: ultimately negals have earned for as much as the repeat
- 1:05:12Speaker 4: thing doesn't happen, you have earned some level of benefit
- 1:05:15Speaker 4: of the doubt with just how good they were last
- 1:05:18Speaker 4: year and how much of that you're still keeping this year.
- 1:05:20Speaker 4: So and even though the Eagles did not win the
- 1:05:24Speaker 4: division a couple of years ago, they were right in
- 1:05:26Speaker 4: position to before every collapse. So it's not like, oh
- 1:05:29Speaker 4: they were just they couldn't even get close to doing it,
- 1:05:31Speaker 4: to repeating. They were close to repeating. So I think
- 1:05:34Speaker 4: if there could be a year, maybe it could finally
- 1:05:36Speaker 4: be this one for them, I hope.
- 1:05:38Speaker 1: So, yeah, I think it would be fantastic, and I
- 1:05:40Speaker 1: think that is what we are going to see. I
- 1:05:42Speaker 1: know it's a end of May here, folks, and training
- 1:05:45Speaker 1: camp hasn't even started, but I think that could potentially
- 1:05:49Speaker 1: and is a great chance to happen for this Philadelphia
- 1:05:51Speaker 1: Eagles team this coming season. Again, folks, He's Brandon League
