- 0:11Hello, friends, it's Sean here. It's Thursday, the 19th of
- 0:15December, and we are today going to finish off the book of the
- 0:20Acts of the Apostles and the last chapter, boy, they cover
- 0:23some ground. They end up, you know, you would
- 0:26have remembered, just shipwrecked.
- 0:27They land on the beach. They travelled the rest of the
- 0:30way to Rome. Paul finds an audience there,
- 0:33and then the author Luke, wraps it up with a little summary that
- 0:37is quite a lot to cover in one actually not very long chapter.
- 0:42And for some, this is a little confusing because the last line
- 0:46talks about over the next couple of years, you know, these things
- 0:49happen and you think, hang on, hang on, aren't we telling the
- 0:52story? How can you gloss over years
- 0:54just in the last sentence, just covering over generally and
- 0:57vaguely what happened. But if we think all the way back
- 1:01to chapter 1 of this book, chapter 1 outlines Jesus telling
- 1:06his disciples to carry this news with them all the way to the
- 1:10ends of the earth. And this is what Paul's mission
- 1:13was, was to share it with the Gentiles all the way through to
- 1:16the ends of the earth. And that happens by him taking
- 1:18his message to the heart of the world, to the heart of the Roman
- 1:22Empire, and sharing it there so that from him, from there it
- 1:26could travel out. And so this is the ending of
- 1:29that, the ending of that story of the church, starting in those
- 1:33humble beginnings to the ends of the earth.
- 1:37And so let us finish the story together as we read Acts chapter
- 1:4328. Once we were safe on shore, we
- 1:56learnt that we were on the island of Malta.
- 1:59The people of the island were very kind to us.
- 2:02It was cold and rainy, so they built a fire on the shore to
- 2:06welcome us. As Paul gathered an armful of
- 2:09sticks and was laying them on the fire, a poisonous snake,
- 2:13driven out by the heat, bit him on the hand.
- 2:17The people of the island saw it hanging from his hand and said
- 2:21to each other, A murderer, no doubt, though he escaped the
- 2:24sea, justice will not be permitted him to live.
- 2:29But Paul shook off the snake into the fire and was unharmed.
- 2:35The people waited for him to swell up or suddenly drop dead.
- 2:39But when they had waited a long time and saw that he wasn't
- 2:42harmed, they changed their minds and decided he was a God.
- 2:48Near the shore where we landed was an estate belonging to
- 2:51Publius, the chief official of the island.
- 2:54He welcomed us and treated us kindly for three days.
- 2:58As it happened, Publius father was ill with fever and
- 3:02dysentery. All went in and prayed for him,
- 3:06and laying his hands on him, he healed him.
- 3:10Then all the other sick people on the island came and were
- 3:13healed. As a result we were showered
- 3:16with honours and when the time came to sail, people supplied us
- 3:20with everything we would need for the trip.
- 3:23It was three months after the shipwreck that we set sail on
- 3:27another ship that had wintered at the island, an Alexandrian
- 3:30ship with the Twin Gods as its figurehead.
- 3:34Our first stop was Syracuse, where we stayed three days.
- 3:38From there we sailed across to Regime a day later AS wind began
- 3:44blowing. So the following day we sailed
- 3:46up the coast to Poutioli. There we found some believers
- 3:50who invited us to spend a week with them, and so we came to
- 3:55Rome. The brothers and sisters in Rome
- 3:58had heard we were coming, and they came to meet us at the
- 4:01Forum on the Apian Way. Others joined us at the Three
- 4:05Taverns. When Paul saw them, he was
- 4:08encouraged and thanked God. When we arrived in Rome, Paul
- 4:12was permitted to have his own private lodging, though he was
- 4:16guarded by a soldier. Three days after Paul's arrival,
- 4:21he called together the local Jewish leaders.
- 4:24He said to them, Brothers, I was arrested in Jerusalem and handed
- 4:29over to the Roman government, even though I had done nothing
- 4:32against our people or the customs of our ancestors.
- 4:36The Romans tried me and wanted to release me because they found
- 4:40no cause for the death sentence. But when the Jewish leaders
- 4:43protested the decision, I felt it necessary to appeal to
- 4:47Caesar, even though I had no desire to press charges against
- 4:51my own people. I asked you to come here today
- 4:54so we could get acquainted and so I could explain to you that I
- 4:58am bound with this chain because I believe that the hope of
- 5:02Israel, the Messiah has already come, they replied.
- 5:09We have had no letters from Judea or reports against you
- 5:12from anyone who has come here, but we want to hear what you
- 5:15believe, for the one thing we know about this movement is that
- 5:20it is denounced everywhere. So a time was set, and on that
- 5:25day a large number of people came to Paul's lodging.
- 5:29He explained and testified about the Kingdom of God and tried to
- 5:34persuade them about Jesus from the Scriptures, using the Law of
- 5:38Moses and the books of the prophets.
- 5:40He spoke to them from morning until evening.
- 5:44Some were persuaded by the things he said, but others did
- 5:48not believe. And after they had argued back
- 5:51and forth among themselves, they're left with this final
- 5:55word from Paul. The Holy Spirit was right when
- 5:59he said to your ancestors through Isaiah the prophet, go
- 6:03and say to this people, when you hear what I say, you will not
- 6:08understand. When you see what I do, you will
- 6:11not comprehend. For the hearts of these people
- 6:15are hardened, and their ears cannot hear, and they have
- 6:18closed their eyes, so their eyes cannot see, and their ears
- 6:23cannot hear, and their hearts cannot understand, and they
- 6:27cannot turn to me and let me heal them.
- 6:32So I want you to know that this salvation from God has also been
- 6:37offered to the Gentiles, and they will accept it.
- 6:42For the next two years, Paul lived in Rome at his own
- 6:45expense. He welcomed all who visited him,
- 6:49boldly proclaiming the Kingdom of God and teaching about the
- 6:53Lord Jesus Christ, and no one tried to stop him.
- 7:08Lord Jesus, here we are in our point in history as members of
- 7:14your church today, your church, that we hear this story of its
- 7:19origin and how your church was born and through your spirit
- 7:24grew across the whole globe. Our Lord, we love you, and we
- 7:30thank you for the gift of our church, that we can be a part of
- 7:34this body of believers, that we can represent you even though we
- 7:39do it so poorly so often, that the gathering and body of your
- 7:45people can continue to be your presence in this world.
- 7:50And Lord, even though we see the Western church failing and
- 7:54struggling and shrinking, Lord, we know that your Kingdom is
- 7:59doing none of those things. Lord, your Kingdom grows and
- 8:03Your spirit moves it as your will dictates.
- 8:08So Lord, I pray that we would be a part of your Kingdom and that
- 8:13we would live lives that would shine Your light into the world
- 8:16around us. And Lord, as we hear the words
- 8:20of Isaiah about hearts being hardened, eyes being closed, and
- 8:25ears being shut, Lord, I pray that you would continue to open
- 8:29the hearts of those to whom your word comes.
- 8:34Lord Jesus, transform this world so that your love can be known
- 8:39far and wide, because you are our only hope, and You are the
- 8:47only source of salvation and the author of life itself.
- 8:52And we love you and we are so grateful that you have chosen to
- 8:56give us this gift of faith and include us and your family.
- 9:01So we lift you up and we praise you and we pray your will be
- 9:06done. And we pray all of this in your
- 9:10name, Jesus, Amen.
