- 0:09Speaker 1: Hello, welcome to Inside the Data on Inside the Birds.
- 0:13Speaker 1: I'm Jeff Mosher, and of course we have our data
- 0:15Speaker 1: expert and analysts with us, Sam Finkel, and the Eagles
- 0:18Speaker 1: are coming off another win. They beat the Lions at
- 0:21Speaker 1: the Link. Very windy game, very interesting game, probably not
- 0:25Speaker 1: a score sixteen to nine that a lot of people
- 0:27Speaker 1: had on their bingo card, but a great display of
- 0:30Speaker 1: efforts on defense. Sam offense, same old song. So we'll
- 0:35Speaker 1: talk about that and for our listeners and viewers to
- 0:38Speaker 1: know the running joke going around and Sam at text
- 0:41Speaker 1: to me, can we just do Inside the Data on
- 0:43Speaker 1: defense this week? And I said, you're not the first
- 0:46Speaker 1: person to have that joke, because when we did Inside
- 0:50Speaker 1: the Tape with Greg Cosel, we were joking we should
- 0:54Speaker 1: still do the show in two parts, just front end defense,
- 0:56Speaker 1: back end defense, and then just ignore offense altogether. But uh,
- 1:01Speaker 1: it's not been pretty for.
- 1:02Speaker 2: The offense and we know that, yeah, we do, but
- 1:04Speaker 2: we'll talk a little bit about maybe why. I mean,
- 1:06Speaker 2: we've we've done that pretty much all year.
- 1:08Speaker 1: But yeah, yeah, I mean we've beaten the third down
- 1:10Speaker 1: horse to a pulp and it's still remained. Now they
- 1:14Speaker 1: were a little bit better, No, only slightly. I don't
- 1:16Speaker 1: think they had like seven or eight three announce against
- 1:18Speaker 1: the lines, but they had I think three in a
- 1:20Speaker 1: row at one point.
- 1:21Speaker 2: So we'll get into it.
- 1:25Speaker 1: I love it all right. Let's start off like we
- 1:28Speaker 1: always do and get right to the good old charts
- 1:31Speaker 1: that we like to share with everybody that you make.
- 1:35Speaker 1: And we usually start off with the basic data to
- 1:37Speaker 1: remind everybody what happened in the game. So here we
- 1:41Speaker 1: go with the Week ten by the numbers, and yeah,
- 1:44Speaker 1: Eagles a couple more green. I did think without looking
- 1:49Speaker 1: at the sam I kind of figured when I also
- 1:51Speaker 1: saw the box scare after the game. But even just
- 1:53Speaker 1: watching it, you felt like the Lions had more yards
- 1:56Speaker 1: and a higher yard per play average because of the
- 2:00Speaker 1: five or six chunk plays they had compared to the
- 2:02Speaker 1: Eagles really not having any chunk plays.
- 2:05Speaker 2: But it finally happened. The Eagles won in yards per rush.
- 2:09Speaker 1: They did, they did apparently.
- 2:13Speaker 2: Three point five, but it finally happened.
- 2:16Speaker 1: Yeah. Now, I don't know if either team is real
- 2:18Speaker 1: proud of their overall number. Eagles at three point seven
- 2:21Speaker 1: and the Lions at three point five just goes to
- 2:24Speaker 1: show how difficult it was for both teams to run
- 2:26Speaker 1: the ball, no doubt, no doubt. You know, we have
- 2:29Speaker 1: an underrated stat here. Maybe we'll talk about this more
- 2:32Speaker 1: on the next episode, because as uh, we'll let our
- 2:36Speaker 1: listeners in and out because they played two games next week.
- 2:40Speaker 1: You know, we felt like it wouldn't make sense to
- 2:42Speaker 1: do an inside the data right after the uh, you know,
- 2:45Speaker 1: game against the Cowboys and then right before the game
- 2:48Speaker 1: against the Bear, So we'll do one the following week
- 2:51Speaker 1: that encapsulates both. But maybe at that point we'll take
- 2:54Speaker 1: a look at penalty oartage on the season, because the
- 2:56Speaker 1: Eagles have had a strange false starts and other some
- 3:03Speaker 1: delayed games, just some weird penalties that they normally don't have.
- 3:06Speaker 2: Yeah, i'd be very interesting. I definitely can take a
- 3:09Speaker 2: look at that. Not a problem at all.
- 3:11Speaker 1: The full starts are really the ones that have sort
- 3:13Speaker 1: of been mind modeling to me, Sam, just because it's
- 3:15Speaker 1: such a veteran offensive line. My lot has had a few.
- 3:20Speaker 1: It's just I don't know. Maybe I guess when you're
- 3:22Speaker 1: struggling right which the old line has struggled to meet
- 3:26Speaker 1: its expectation, it's still good, but maybe you start pressing
- 3:30Speaker 1: and then trying to get a little extra jump before
- 3:32Speaker 1: the snap.
- 3:35Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean it makes sense to me. One of
- 3:37Speaker 2: their basic stat I'd love to just briefly say is this.
- 3:40Speaker 2: I think this was their best average starting field position
- 3:43Speaker 2: of the year, well since we started tracking it, which
- 3:46Speaker 2: I don't think. I don't think I did that the
- 3:48Speaker 2: first two weeks, but after that, So this is the
- 3:51Speaker 2: best since that period.
- 3:53Speaker 1: Yeah. I also wonder if it's one of their best margins,
- 3:56Speaker 1: meaning that they had their their average starting field position
- 3:59Speaker 1: was thirty six point one Lions twenty eight point eight.
- 4:02Speaker 1: It's a pretty big difference.
- 4:03Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean a lot of it was just because
- 4:05Speaker 2: the Lions kept going for it on fourth down.
- 4:06Speaker 1: That's a great point.
- 4:07Speaker 2: So, I mean that's a lot of where that came from.
- 4:10Speaker 1: Sure. Uh and of course the Eagles did not turn
- 4:13Speaker 1: the ball over rint, swash, repeat, you know. All right,
- 4:17Speaker 1: here's the favorite favorite stat that we like to talk
- 4:19Speaker 1: about with the offense, third down situational stats. Yeah. So, yeah,
- 4:26Speaker 1: so they may have a few er three announced, but
- 4:27Speaker 1: they still weren't good on third down. But here's the thing.
- 4:30Speaker 2: This is the first time they beat the opponent on
- 4:32Speaker 2: third down.
- 4:34Speaker 1: They did. Oh you know what, my eyes deceived me there.
- 4:36Speaker 1: I thought that's at thirty three percent. You're right, it
- 4:37Speaker 1: said twenty three percent. So that's so that's sort of
- 4:40Speaker 1: like a hold my beer situation for the for Detroit
- 4:42Speaker 1: to Philadelphia, I think so.
- 4:44Speaker 2: And the fact that I think they were like zero
- 4:46Speaker 2: for five on fourth down, So it's just they did
- 4:49Speaker 2: really well on those important third and fourth downs against
- 4:52Speaker 2: the opponent. They didn't do particularly great on their own opportunities, right,
- 4:57Speaker 2: I think they were, oh for one, I think the
- 5:00Speaker 2: only one I could think of was the failed touch push.
- 5:03Speaker 1: I thought there were two failed, but there was a
- 5:06Speaker 1: full start on one, wasn't there the average sing putting
- 5:09Speaker 1: the arm over? So that actually probably doesn't count because
- 5:12Speaker 1: then they wound up punting, right.
- 5:14Speaker 2: Yes, yes, that would not count towards this data for sure.
- 5:18Speaker 2: So that's the only on what I could think of, at
- 5:19Speaker 2: least on the top of my head.
- 5:20Speaker 1: Oh wait, no, hold on, so they were going to
- 5:22Speaker 1: toush yeah, because that was a fourth down play, not
- 5:24Speaker 1: a third downplay, right, all right, So their season average
- 5:29Speaker 1: this year thirty three point nine percent, continues to be
- 5:32Speaker 1: lower than last year, which was closer to forty two percent.
- 5:37Speaker 1: There's opponent's average of this. Amazingly, the Lions going twenty
- 5:41Speaker 1: three percent on third down made the Eagle season average
- 5:46Speaker 1: against at forty point four, which means opponents are converting
- 5:49Speaker 1: forty point four percent of their third downs against the Eagles.
- 5:52Speaker 1: So that number probably drops significantly because of the Lions,
- 5:56Speaker 1: and yet it's still at forty point four percent. Yep.
- 6:00Speaker 1: Sort of shows you that Egles have some work to
- 6:01Speaker 1: do here.
- 6:02Speaker 2: Yeah, they certainly do. I think you said it perfectly,
- 6:07Speaker 2: but I will say that because of how this game
- 6:10Speaker 2: went and the you know, three thirteen, it started to
- 6:13Speaker 2: normalize the distribution on the third and short, third and
- 6:17Speaker 2: medium and third and long. Yeah, once we get to that,
- 6:20Speaker 2: it's starting to look a little bit closer to you know,
- 6:23Speaker 2: even true, which is what you kind of want to see, right,
- 6:27Speaker 2: so we don't want to see it even but yeah.
- 6:30Speaker 1: Yeah, as we look at the because the big thing was,
- 6:33Speaker 1: I think the Eagles were in third and long more
- 6:36Speaker 1: than third and short and third and medium combined, and
- 6:40Speaker 1: now it's getting well, twice is more, and now it's
- 6:43Speaker 1: not twice as more anymore, right, right, Yeah, So it's
- 6:46Speaker 1: like fifty two snaps of third and short and third
- 6:49Speaker 1: medium combined and seventy two of third and long. At
- 6:51Speaker 1: one point it was like, you know, sixty and twenty
- 6:55Speaker 1: eight or something like that.
- 6:56Speaker 2: It was really not good. And you know what, they're
- 6:58Speaker 2: still kind of continuing trend. They had more third and
- 7:01Speaker 2: long plays than they did third and short and third
- 7:03Speaker 2: and medium combined in this game too. Yeah, so, I
- 7:06Speaker 2: mean they're still continuing the trend. When we go to
- 7:09Speaker 2: see the visualization of it, they're at fifty six point
- 7:11Speaker 2: one percent third and long as opposed to last year
- 7:15Speaker 2: when they were forty six point six percent.
- 7:17Speaker 1: Yeah, right, now fifty eight point one third and long right, Yep,
- 7:23Speaker 1: that's a pretty big piece of the pot.
- 7:25Speaker 2: It says, Yes, I must read it.
- 7:31Speaker 1: So they're in third and short only thirteen points. I
- 7:34Speaker 1: almost think that that's striking too, because the Leagles have
- 7:37Speaker 1: been a four down offense for quite a while, and
- 7:40Speaker 1: they've always been able to run specific plays on third
- 7:44Speaker 1: down knowing they're going to go for on fourth down.
- 7:46Speaker 1: But they've been in third and short only fourteen percent
- 7:50Speaker 1: of the time this year compared to twenty six percent
- 7:53Speaker 1: last year. That's a pretty big differential that I don't
- 7:56Speaker 1: think we've talked about because third and medium is kind
- 7:58Speaker 1: of around the same. It's that they're in third and
- 8:00Speaker 1: long so much longer, which naturally means they're in third
- 8:02Speaker 1: and short a lot more.
- 8:04Speaker 2: Yeah, I think less less, sorry, less for sure. But
- 8:08Speaker 2: I think we kind of briefly alluded to this, I
- 8:11Speaker 2: think last week where I think that their mindset's different
- 8:15Speaker 2: to set it up for third down because they have
- 8:17Speaker 2: fourth down. And I also think teams play them differently
- 8:19Speaker 2: because they're trying to keep them from getting closer, you know,
- 8:23Speaker 2: to even go for the fourth down. So I think
- 8:25Speaker 2: that that factors in to some extent, maybe not explaining
- 8:28Speaker 2: the entire variable, but it does explain some of it.
- 8:31Speaker 1: I think what makes sense to me, obviously, team to
- 8:34Speaker 1: have studied the Eagles all season and tried to figure
- 8:37Speaker 1: out different ways to come at them. All right, let's
- 8:40Speaker 1: go through some of your facts, your fun not so
- 8:42Speaker 1: fun facts.
- 8:43Speaker 2: Yes, so, the Philadelphia Eagles have won consecutive games despite
- 8:47Speaker 2: fewer than twenty points in each game, marking the first
- 8:50Speaker 2: time that they have won back to back with fewer
- 8:52Speaker 2: than twenty points since Week fourteen Week fifteen of two
- 8:55Speaker 2: thousand and four. The fun part, though, this is also
- 8:58Speaker 2: the first time the Eagles have allowed ten points or
- 9:00Speaker 2: fewer in consecutive games since Week two, Week three of
- 9:03Speaker 2: twenty twenty two. Now, just reading that before we even
- 9:06Speaker 2: get to the next part, do you have an idea
- 9:09Speaker 2: who they played Week fourteen, Week fifteen of the two
- 9:12Speaker 2: thousand and four season.
- 9:13Speaker 1: Two thousand and four season, Week fourteen and fifteen, So
- 9:16Speaker 1: this is the Super Bowl year, right, This is They've
- 9:20Speaker 1: lost Terrell Owens for the year at this point, fourteen
- 9:25Speaker 1: and it's only a sixteen game schedule at this point.
- 9:29Speaker 1: So I'm gonna guess that they basically didn't play because
- 9:33Speaker 1: they had such a huge lead for I think in
- 9:36Speaker 1: the conference and the division that they didn't play their starters.
- 9:40Speaker 1: And I will say they played Washington and.
- 9:47Speaker 2: Dallas, those two absolutely, right, that was year. I swear
- 9:51Speaker 2: to you you're right. It was Washington first and then Dallas.
- 9:55Speaker 1: And if memory starts me correctly, in two thousand and four,
- 9:57Speaker 1: those teams were not good.
- 10:00Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, listen, the scores were seventeen to fourteen
- 10:03Speaker 2: and then Develove to seven.
- 10:05Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 10:06Speaker 2: So that's incredible that you've got both of those.
- 10:09Speaker 1: I I that's it's a little strange, I admit I
- 10:12Speaker 1: thought I might get one of those two right just
- 10:14Speaker 1: by going in the division, but man nailed them both.
- 10:16Speaker 2: Wow, do you want to try Week two to three,
- 10:18Speaker 2: twenty twenty two.
- 10:20Speaker 1: So you said, this is the Eagles of the first
- 10:22Speaker 1: time the Eagles have allowed ten or fewer points in
- 10:24Speaker 1: consecutive games since Weeks two and three of two thousand
- 10:29Speaker 1: and twenty two. All right, that's just a couple of
- 10:31Speaker 1: years ago, right, it should be easier. It should it's
- 10:33Speaker 1: a better pull than in two thousand and four. That's crazy.
- 10:35Speaker 1: So this is this is twenty five four three too.
- 10:38Speaker 2: Well.
- 10:38Speaker 1: I feel like Kirk Cousins has to be in there
- 10:41Speaker 1: somewhere because he was always playing the Eagles for three
- 10:44Speaker 1: straight years. On Week three and maybe the Bucks. How
- 10:47Speaker 1: about Vikings Bucks?
- 10:50Speaker 2: You're one for two. It was Vikings a twenty four
- 10:53Speaker 2: to seven game, and that was not It was not
- 10:56Speaker 2: the Bucks, but Bucks have pretty consistently been week like
- 10:58Speaker 2: four for the Eagles. Two. Yeah, it was the Commanders.
- 11:02Speaker 1: Ah, okay, that makes sense. But oh that was the
- 11:06Speaker 1: ninth Was that the ninth sack game against Carson Wentz? Yeah? Yeah,
- 11:12Speaker 1: what what a pull?
- 11:13Speaker 2: Nice job you definitely I put you on my trivia team.
- 11:18Speaker 1: Thank you, thank you. I have I have a sickness
- 11:21Speaker 1: sometimes with a little recalling, especially in non consequential games.
- 11:28Speaker 2: Which to be there is a lot of Eagles history
- 11:31Speaker 2: for a good deal. Yeah.
- 11:33Speaker 1: So all right, so the Eagles offense. Let's what we
- 11:36Speaker 1: have here on the red zone.
- 11:38Speaker 2: Yeah, so this is actually a really interesting fact. I
- 11:40Speaker 2: got both of these from NFL Pro But the Eagles
- 11:43Speaker 2: offense has made a trip to the red zone on
- 11:45Speaker 2: just twenty three point of their drives this season, and
- 11:48Speaker 2: that's the fourth lowest rate in the NFL, ahead of
- 11:50Speaker 2: the Browns, Jets, and Titans, who together have combined five wins.
- 11:55Speaker 2: Just just so we're super clear on that.
- 11:57Speaker 1: Wow. So I know we were giving the Eagles a
- 11:59Speaker 1: lot of credit earlier in this season, and they still
- 12:02Speaker 1: deserve it for having one of the highest red zone
- 12:05Speaker 1: efficiency rates in the NFL. At one point there were
- 12:08Speaker 1: one hundred. They were eleven for eleven, but we kept
- 12:11Speaker 1: couching it to say, but you know, your number can
- 12:14Speaker 1: be high when you have a lot fewer attempts, and
- 12:16Speaker 1: they were always among the league's worst. I thought, sam
- 12:20Speaker 1: By now that that was going to because that was
- 12:22Speaker 1: about three week three to four or something. Yeah, I
- 12:24Speaker 1: thought by now they'd be better, but they clearly have not.
- 12:27Speaker 1: I mean, I know, so a lot of people want
- 12:30Speaker 1: to talk about this offense and just say, hey, look
- 12:32Speaker 1: this last two games they've been outdoors against really good,
- 12:36Speaker 1: good teams. Like you have to excuse some of the
- 12:38Speaker 1: offensive lethargy or at least cough it up to that.
- 12:41Speaker 1: But this is some of the stuff we're doing on
- 12:42Speaker 1: third down in red zone here, which is the game,
- 12:45Speaker 1: like situational football is how you win games. Has been
- 12:48Speaker 1: an issue since week one and not going away.
- 12:51Speaker 2: Yeah, and you actually kind of stole my thunder a
- 12:53Speaker 2: little bit. All right, No, you're you're good. But they
- 12:57Speaker 2: still are leading the league when they're in the red
- 12:59Speaker 2: zone right at seventy five percent.
- 13:02Speaker 1: Yeah, but the problem.
- 13:03Speaker 2: Is they're just not getting there, kind of like what
- 13:05Speaker 2: you exactly said. And NFL pro attributes it to their
- 13:09Speaker 2: inability to stay on schedule, which is what we said
- 13:11Speaker 2: on staff. Outside of the red zone. They have a
- 13:13Speaker 2: forty point three percent success rate on outside of the
- 13:16Speaker 2: red zone plays, which is the third lowest in the NFL,
- 13:19Speaker 2: ahead of only the Browns and Titans. And again, you
- 13:22Speaker 2: really don't want to be compared to the Browns, Jets
- 13:24Speaker 2: or Titans this year, especially this year.
- 13:26Speaker 1: Yeah, especially offensively. I mean, yeah, hey, it's Jeff Mosher.
- 13:30Speaker 1: And if you have a family and kids at home,

- 15:38Speaker 1: one and up. All Right, I'm sure everybody is excited
- 15:42Speaker 1: about offense here.
- 15:43Speaker 2: Well, it finally happened. I feel like I keep saying that,
- 15:47Speaker 2: but it did. The Eagles are finally a negative EPA
- 15:50Speaker 2: team in terms of offense. They were positive until this game.
- 15:55Speaker 1: Right, and then I guess what happened to bring it
- 15:58Speaker 1: down was that they were a negative. And every every
- 16:00Speaker 1: single category against the Lions EPA for play, per pass,
- 16:03Speaker 1: per rush, the one for passes the worst, right minus
- 16:07Speaker 1: point three four.
- 16:08Speaker 2: Yeah, and and look if their passes now at zero
- 16:10Speaker 2: point zero zero, it's the only one that isn't negative.
- 16:13Speaker 2: But honestly, I feel the frustration. Everybody's frustrated. We're going
- 16:16Speaker 2: red until it goes positive. It's gonna be read on
- 16:20Speaker 2: this chart.
- 16:20Speaker 1: But I agree.
- 16:22Speaker 2: Listen, my chart definitely dictates the Eagles offenses. It's definitely.
- 16:26Speaker 2: It makes a huge constant, it's consequential.
- 16:29Speaker 1: Of course, I totally agree, Sam, I want to give
- 16:32Speaker 1: them the Eagles is in the hands of your or
- 16:34Speaker 1: is in your.
- 16:34Speaker 2: Charts clearly clearly a big part of it.
- 16:38Speaker 1: Uh, they were. It's weird because when you see that
- 16:42Speaker 1: they were positive in the net time before pass right,
- 16:45Speaker 1: mm hmm uh, that's usually a good sign.
- 16:48Speaker 2: Yeah. I mean, listen, you're being pressured for less of
- 16:50Speaker 2: the time on average that you're throwing, which is is good, right,
- 16:54Speaker 2: But at the same time, I mean the time to
- 16:58Speaker 2: pressure was faster.
- 17:01Speaker 1: Yep.
- 17:01Speaker 2: So it's relative statistic, right, I mean good point Yeah, yeah,
- 17:05Speaker 2: I mean you're you have like a negative you have
- 17:08Speaker 2: you have point zero six more of a second. But
- 17:12Speaker 2: what's what's that going to really do for you when
- 17:14Speaker 2: you're getting pressured? You know, zero point two to one faster.
- 17:17Speaker 1: So yeah, and yet the pressure percentage was lower than
- 17:23Speaker 1: the normal season percentage.
- 17:25Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 17:26Speaker 1: So I always find these stats somewhat hard to like parse,
- 17:30Speaker 1: I guess because there are some times where it seems
- 17:32Speaker 1: like a stat will tell you that the other team
- 17:34Speaker 1: got good pressure, and then when you look at the
- 17:37Speaker 1: pressure rate, it wasn't as good as maybe what the
- 17:39Speaker 1: season average against them is, and it's it makes my
- 17:42Speaker 1: head spin.
- 17:43Speaker 2: I get it. And listen sometimes the stats to see
- 17:47Speaker 2: your eyes, it's always better. It's always better when they
- 17:50Speaker 2: confirm it.
- 17:51Speaker 1: There you go. Average separation for the Eagles in this
- 17:55Speaker 1: game was only two point three percent.
- 17:57Speaker 2: Well, just two or three yards.
- 18:00Speaker 1: I'm sure, yes, two for three yards would be a problem, right,
- 18:04Speaker 1: that would be bad the yards per target, which is
- 18:06Speaker 1: well below the three point four. The Lions played a
- 18:08Speaker 1: lot of man coverage in this game, so I don't know.
- 18:12Speaker 1: It strikes me as an interesting statistic that when a
- 18:16Speaker 1: team played a predominant number a lot of man with
- 18:19Speaker 1: backup corners and a backup safety, that the Eagles had
- 18:23Speaker 1: trouble getting separation. Yeah, it could be also a route
- 18:27Speaker 1: concept thing. I don't want to put that all on
- 18:29Speaker 1: the receivers, just sort of I don't know. Claring really
- 18:34Speaker 1: jumps out.
- 18:35Speaker 2: I agree with that sentiment for sure.
- 18:38Speaker 1: And then the old one that jumps out here is
- 18:40Speaker 1: that their runs were stuffed at a twenty five percent rate,
- 18:43Speaker 1: even higher than their season rate of twenty two percent.
- 18:47Speaker 1: Running continues to be a problem, Yeah.
- 18:49Speaker 2: It really does. And honestly I went through run success
- 18:52Speaker 2: last year just to see because I was considering putting
- 18:55Speaker 2: run success red too. But they're actually not that far
- 18:58Speaker 2: off from their run success last year, are still, right?
- 19:02Speaker 1: Yeah? I think at least this one has an explanation.
- 19:05Speaker 1: I mean, they ran, they faced stack boxes on your
- 19:10Speaker 1: chart at forty eight percent of the time, which is
- 19:12Speaker 1: much higher than their season average of thirty four. So clearly,
- 19:15Speaker 1: you know, the Lions were putting a lot of guys
- 19:18Speaker 1: in the box and aiming to stop Barkley and they did.
- 19:20Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 19:22Speaker 1: Even the best run that Barkley had, that fourteen yarder,
- 19:25Speaker 1: was a misdirect. It was a non blocking play. It
- 19:27Speaker 1: was everybody floats that, everybody blocks the right and pitch
- 19:30Speaker 1: the ball.
- 19:30Speaker 2: To the left. Yep, It's it's a weird year for
- 19:34Speaker 2: the offensive line for sure.
- 19:37Speaker 1: All right, now, we've got I love that you came
- 19:38Speaker 1: up with these offensive tendencies by the Eagles. We wanted
- 19:42Speaker 1: to take a deeper dive into this, and I know
- 19:45Speaker 1: you went to it's Warren sharp site, right, the sharp Yeah,
- 19:52Speaker 1: and he does a really good job of breaking down
- 19:55Speaker 1: what offensives do from personnel groupings and then also pre
- 19:59Speaker 1: snap motion, play action, air yards and things like that.
- 20:02Speaker 1: So for people who can't see the chart, what's the
- 20:04Speaker 1: one thing that really jumped out to you here?
- 20:06Speaker 2: Well, I think there's a couple of things that jump out,
- 20:08Speaker 2: but I mean motion rate is still among the lowest
- 20:11Speaker 2: in the league. Play action rate still among the lowest
- 20:15Speaker 2: in the league. You know what's interesting, though, is every
- 20:17Speaker 2: other statistic. I mean, they're in the top ten, if
- 20:20Speaker 2: not the top five, and that's air yards per attempt,
- 20:23Speaker 2: which again, air yards per attempt you don't necessarily want
- 20:27Speaker 2: to be particularly high there because it means you're relying
- 20:30Speaker 2: on you know, deep shots typically, which is pretty like
- 20:35Speaker 2: you can say that or the Eagles offense this year
- 20:37Speaker 2: that that's kind of accurate. And then shotgun rate, I mean,
- 20:41Speaker 2: seventy six point three percent, you're seventh in the league.
- 20:44Speaker 2: I know a lot of people want them to be
- 20:46Speaker 2: under center more. They've they've done it a little bit more,
- 20:50Speaker 2: but really it's not you know. And then the no
- 20:54Speaker 2: huddle rate at sixteen point nine percent is fourth in
- 20:56Speaker 2: the league, and that one is not really a problem.
- 20:59Speaker 2: They've done pretty well no huddle, yeah, but it's just
- 21:01Speaker 2: so jarring that they're, you know, bottom of the league
- 21:04Speaker 2: in motion and play action, yet top of the league
- 21:07Speaker 2: in the other three statistics.
- 21:09Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, again, they're so screwy that, like, I
- 21:13Speaker 1: don't I would love to look at Seattle's because I
- 21:15Speaker 1: would imagine that their play action rate is very high
- 21:19Speaker 1: and their air yards rate, I would imagine it is
- 21:21Speaker 1: very high because normally you get your shot plays off
- 21:24Speaker 1: of play action, right, the fact that the Eagles have
- 21:27Speaker 1: no almost no play action and still have number one
- 21:31Speaker 1: in air yards is mind boggling, and I agree with you.
- 21:33Speaker 1: In fact, when I looked at the this graphic, I said,
- 21:37Speaker 1: people are going to think that the first two categories
- 21:40Speaker 1: are the worst, being twenty ninth in motion and thirtieth
- 21:43Speaker 1: in play action. But we're going to tell them that
- 21:46Speaker 1: being number one in air yards theoretically might sound good,
- 21:49Speaker 1: but really isn't because it again, we all we know
- 21:52Speaker 1: the greater context is that the offense is not good
- 21:54Speaker 1: right now. And this just shows exactly what you said.
- 21:57Speaker 1: You're a shot play offense. You have no complimentary run
- 22:01Speaker 1: games through intermediary game to you, you're just basically throwing
- 22:04Speaker 1: the ball down the field and hoping something happens. In
- 22:06Speaker 1: two or three times a game it does.
- 22:08Speaker 2: That is literally the Eagle season this year. That I
- 22:10Speaker 2: could not have said it better. That is the Eagle
- 22:12Speaker 2: season this year.
- 22:14Speaker 1: Yeah, all right, good stuff. You have Saquon Barkley's carry
- 22:19Speaker 1: chart here. This is the first time I think we've
- 22:20Speaker 1: we've done the route trees, but we haven't done a
- 22:22Speaker 1: carry chart.
- 22:23Speaker 2: Yeah, we haven't because you know, there really hasn't been
- 22:25Speaker 2: much to discuss. But all I'm gonna say is it's
- 22:29Speaker 2: the same song and dance. I mean, listen. Their outside
- 22:32Speaker 2: runs with Saquon this year have been better. Yes, anytime
- 22:35Speaker 2: they've been running like behind a tackle, outside the tackle,
- 22:38Speaker 2: it's been better. That may change now that Lane Johnson
- 22:42Speaker 2: is injured. I don't know how comfortable they are running
- 22:45Speaker 2: behind Fred Johnson, but pretty consistently the tackles have been
- 22:49Speaker 2: the best spot. The outside runs have been better. Yeah,
- 22:52Speaker 2: and I don't think anything has changed. That's the reason
- 22:54Speaker 2: I put it up here.
- 22:54Speaker 1: So yep. And the one that goes up the left
- 22:57Speaker 1: sideline that's green, I believe was that misdirection flip play
- 23:01Speaker 1: ninety flip that I was talking about. Yes, so if
- 23:03Speaker 1: you were to take that out just on, that's sort
- 23:07Speaker 1: of a guy's play. I don't call it a trick,
- 23:09Speaker 1: but I mean again, there's no blocking involved.
- 23:12Speaker 2: So misdirect yeahs directly.
- 23:14Speaker 1: Right, right, even though a misdirection sometimes has a guy
- 23:17Speaker 1: in front of you like that one was literally just yeah. Yes,
- 23:22Speaker 1: By the way, eighty three yards was one to Sae
- 23:24Speaker 1: Quon Barkley's better games this year. But I think what's
- 23:27Speaker 1: crazy to say that. Yeah, what jumps out is the
- 23:30Speaker 1: rushing yards over expectation, which is minus thirty seven. Does
- 23:37Speaker 1: that mean he left me on the bone?
- 23:40Speaker 2: Typically, Yeah, that's that's I mean, that's It's not a
- 23:43Speaker 2: perfect statistic, it never is. But yeah, what it's saying
- 23:46Speaker 2: is like, given the same situation and average running back
- 23:49Speaker 2: would have thirty seven more yards.
- 23:51Speaker 1: I find it hard to believe.
- 23:53Speaker 2: Hard to believe, Okay, I think honestly, I I have
- 23:57Speaker 2: been I understand my potential bias because of my Penn
- 24:01Speaker 2: State connection actually knowing Saquon. I try to take it
- 24:04Speaker 2: out of it. I will acknowledge it, but I will
- 24:08Speaker 2: say that I don't think this can be attributed to Sequon.
- 24:12Speaker 2: I really don't.
- 24:13Speaker 1: Overall this year, Yeah, I mean I would guess. I
- 24:15Speaker 1: would love to go through each run with whoever charts
- 24:18Speaker 1: who's responsible to this, and ask them where they thought Saquon.
- 24:22Speaker 1: There was one play we showed on inside the tape
- 24:24Speaker 1: with Greg and by the way, some of these numbers
- 24:27Speaker 1: can be skewed if there's a play, right that a
- 24:30Speaker 1: rushing play where Saquon doesn't hit the correct hole. But
- 24:34Speaker 1: if he did, he might have had a fifty yard
- 24:36Speaker 1: run because you could see nobody there. Doesn't that sort
- 24:39Speaker 1: of skew the average big time.
- 24:41Speaker 2: Where I'm sure it does. I don't know the exact
- 24:44Speaker 2: algorithm how that works. I know what the implications of
- 24:47Speaker 2: it are, but I don't know the exact inner workings
- 24:49Speaker 2: of the algorithm.
- 24:50Speaker 1: To because there was one play where he got stopped
- 24:53Speaker 1: in the backfield and honestly, the line did not get
- 24:56Speaker 1: any push. But it was third and one and as
- 24:59Speaker 1: he's getting the handle for the mesh point, there is
- 25:01Speaker 1: a crease on the left side that he had the
- 25:03Speaker 1: ability to hit, but he kind of he kind of
- 25:05Speaker 1: did you know how sometimes he does that weird thing
- 25:07Speaker 1: with his legs where he he shuffles, but he stays
- 25:12Speaker 1: in the same I know exactly.
- 25:13Speaker 2: What you're talking. Yeah, I almost wonder if his running
- 25:16Speaker 2: style is kind of reverted back to like I need
- 25:18Speaker 2: to make plays this like this it's hero or what
- 25:21Speaker 2: we thought?
- 25:22Speaker 1: Yeah, we thought that maybe he was tentative and reluctant.
- 25:24Speaker 1: Now again, the line was on the on the the
- 25:27Speaker 1: blocking side of it was getting pushed back. So as
- 25:29Speaker 1: a running back, you see color where you see penetration
- 25:32Speaker 1: and you're going to do that. That happens a lot.
- 25:35Speaker 1: But there was a hole on the left side to
- 25:37Speaker 1: run through that he just kind of I don't know,
- 25:40Speaker 1: maybe he was so shocked to see an opening that
- 25:42Speaker 1: he didn't know how to handle it. But yeah, but
- 25:45Speaker 1: that's but that's that's a play that where I thought
- 25:47Speaker 1: he could have gotten the one to two uh minus
- 25:50Speaker 1: thirty seven seems a little a little strange, but.
- 25:52Speaker 2: I agree, I'm listen. We can what the statistics are
- 25:56Speaker 2: and kind of what they mean, but sure as to
- 25:59Speaker 2: how those ones are actually calculated, it it's hidden a
- 26:02Speaker 2: little bit.
- 26:02Speaker 1: So all right, Well, if you really want to understand
- 26:05Speaker 1: how bad the passing game is, and you've been listening
- 26:07Speaker 1: to this show for you know, better part of two years,
- 26:10Speaker 1: two seasons now, there's one stat here on Jalen Hurts's
- 26:14Speaker 1: passing chart that should make your eyes fall out, right?
- 26:18Speaker 2: Is it the CPOE?
- 26:19Speaker 1: Yes, this is the This is the number one quarterback
- 26:22Speaker 1: in CPOE for like two years running up until recently now,
- 26:26Speaker 1: and by a.
- 26:26Speaker 2: Pretty good signature stat Actually, yes, yes, you know he
- 26:32Speaker 2: makes the hard throws, but in this game he just
- 26:35Speaker 2: wasn't and honestly, I think this statistic can somewhat be
- 26:38Speaker 2: attributed to the windy conditions, agree to some to some extent,
- 26:43Speaker 2: Does that alleviate him from all blame. No, I don't
- 26:46Speaker 2: think it was his best game, but I think it's
- 26:49Speaker 2: also understandable because of the conditions of the field and
- 26:54Speaker 2: the game flow. I mean, they did throw the ball
- 26:55Speaker 2: particularly often early, which is not typically what they've done
- 27:00Speaker 2: this year. So I don't know. I think those are factors.
- 27:03Speaker 2: I don't want to make excuses because we haven't seen
- 27:06Speaker 2: the best of Jalen Hurts and he isn't even performing
- 27:08Speaker 2: in the statistics that he usually does, so and I
- 27:11Speaker 2: think that's just, you know, emblematic of this team.
- 27:13Speaker 1: So yeah, and I mean, I guess the bigger point
- 27:17Speaker 1: is the wind has the most or greatest impact on
- 27:20Speaker 1: throws that are going to be in the air for
- 27:23Speaker 1: a long time, which are his signature throws. The fact
- 27:26Speaker 1: that the wind, let's say it did impact, I think
- 27:29Speaker 1: it did, okay, but it also goes to show you
- 27:32Speaker 1: that there's that lacking of the intermediary and short game
- 27:36Speaker 1: that we're talking about, where the wind would have less
- 27:38Speaker 1: of an impact. I mean, you can throw the ball
- 27:40Speaker 1: and the wind is gusty. It doesn't blow at fifty
- 27:43Speaker 1: miles per hour all the time. It just at certain
- 27:46Speaker 1: times it really picks up. But if you have a
- 27:49Speaker 1: screen game, if you have a short game, if you
- 27:50Speaker 1: have an pop pass RPO game, and you're setting up
- 27:53Speaker 1: those longer shots, ay, those are easier passes, so you're
- 27:56Speaker 1: theoretically improving your completion percentage and be it allows to
- 28:00Speaker 1: move the change without being so reliant on that. So,
- 28:02Speaker 1: I mean, I think you're right that the wind. We
- 28:05Speaker 1: can attribute that to the wind, but we can also
- 28:07Speaker 1: attribute the overall to the fact that this offense is
- 28:10Speaker 1: a shot play or nothing offense.
- 28:11Speaker 2: There's no complimentary offense at all. I mean, that's that's
- 28:14Speaker 2: honestly the biggest takeaway and theme that we should take
- 28:17Speaker 2: from this particular episode on the offense.
- 28:20Speaker 1: Right by the way, if I'm not mistaken, this is
- 28:21Speaker 1: the first time all year he's had a negative CPOE.
- 28:24Speaker 2: I think you're right about that.
- 28:25Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm looking now actually against the Packers again, elements
- 28:29Speaker 1: it was plus one point two, which is good that
- 28:32Speaker 1: it's positive, but that's like wayblow his typical app season average.
- 28:37Speaker 1: If I'm not mistaken, Well, yeah.
- 28:38Speaker 2: I mean it also helps when you have aj Brown
- 28:40Speaker 2: and Devanta Smith's, particularly Devanta Smith that can just make
- 28:43Speaker 2: any catch that you put anywhere near him.
- 28:45Speaker 1: Hey, I still like a good night out, but I'm

- 30:16Speaker 1: great point. And now we get to excite people by
- 30:18Speaker 1: talking about the defense and the by the number of stats.
- 30:23Speaker 1: These are the advanced stats. And look at that all green.
- 30:26Speaker 2: All green. There's nothing to put red. To be honest
- 30:29Speaker 2: with you, I mean, the defense has been playing phenomenally.
- 30:32Speaker 2: You know, the Jalen Phillips edition cannot be honestly, even
- 30:39Speaker 2: when I talk about it, it's still I'm under selling it.
- 30:42Speaker 2: It has been. It's changed the inflection of this team
- 30:46Speaker 2: of this defense, it really has.
- 30:48Speaker 1: I agree, and I wrote this on Philly Voice on
- 30:51Speaker 1: Wednesday Thursday. I believe that there's another addition to the
- 30:56Speaker 1: defense that has been talked about, but not maybe an
- 31:00Speaker 1: not enough as maybe this is equally as important as
- 31:04Speaker 1: Jalen Phillips, and that has been Nikobe Dean and the
- 31:07Speaker 1: way they've used him since he's come back. He has
- 31:10Speaker 1: been used in the blitz in the SIM pressure, and
- 31:13Speaker 1: his pass rush numbers are fantastic. Over the last two weeks.
- 31:18Speaker 1: He is blowing up running backs like David Montgomery and
- 31:21Speaker 1: Josh Jacobs. He's getting past guards on SIM pressures who
- 31:25Speaker 1: are just a little bit late but still making contact.
- 31:28Speaker 1: I mean, his pass rush sam has been a really
- 31:32Speaker 1: big part of why VIC has stopped blitzing almost like
- 31:36Speaker 1: by fifty percent the last two weeks. He's been among
- 31:39Speaker 1: the least blitzing defensive coordinators in the league.
- 31:41Speaker 2: I mean, take a look, it's right there. They're twenty
- 31:44Speaker 2: one percent on the season, only twelve point eight against this,
- 31:46Speaker 2: which is definitely a talking point. I was hoping we'd
- 31:49Speaker 2: get to, so I'm glad he brought it up. What's
- 31:51Speaker 2: interesting is both Dean and Phillips will be free agents
- 31:54Speaker 2: after the season. It is it'll be interesting to see
- 31:57Speaker 2: what happens there.
- 31:58Speaker 1: Yeah, and on the EPA's I think it's worth noting
- 32:01Speaker 1: that they're not just green because they're better. They're overwhelmingly
- 32:05Speaker 1: better than the season average. I mean, when you talk
- 32:07Speaker 1: about EPA per play season average being minus point one two,
- 32:10Speaker 1: which is a good thing, as you always say, for defense,
- 32:12Speaker 1: you want to be in the minus minus, looks like.
- 32:14Speaker 2: They're top like ten in the league in EPA per
- 32:17Speaker 2: play by the way, for defense.
- 32:18Speaker 1: Eleven or for total for total, wow, so week eleven
- 32:21Speaker 1: they might be number one.
- 32:23Speaker 2: I would assume they would be number one. Having almost
- 32:28Speaker 2: like negative point five is ridiculous, like that is highly
- 32:32Speaker 2: elite defense.
- 32:33Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, just compare that to the point seven,
- 32:36Speaker 1: which is a good number EPA per rush. But then
- 32:38Speaker 1: to go to point oh five to three is I'm sorry,
- 32:41Speaker 1: point five three. So we went from point zero seven,
- 32:44Speaker 1: which is like point one to point five. That's all.
- 32:48Speaker 1: That's a huge five times better, yes, five times better,
- 32:50Speaker 1: thank you. I'm struggling to figure that on out. Good
- 32:54Speaker 1: stuff there.
- 32:55Speaker 2: And another thing I just want to talk about before
- 32:58Speaker 2: we move on from it is despite the blitz percentage
- 33:02Speaker 2: going down, the pressure percentage actually was up on the season,
- 33:06Speaker 2: and the sack percentage was pretty much the same.
- 33:08Speaker 1: But right, yeah, but that's good. But that pressure percentage
- 33:12Speaker 1: went up from thirty six percent on average to forty
- 33:15Speaker 1: one percent. I think for pressure that's a really big jump.
- 33:18Speaker 2: That is a really big jump for sure. Yeah, when
- 33:21Speaker 2: you're blitzing less.
- 33:22Speaker 1: And that's the whole point. That is. That is Vic
- 33:25Speaker 1: Fangio's mantra in a nutshell. It is It makes us
- 33:29Speaker 1: think of the Super Bowl when they crushed the Kansas
- 33:32Speaker 1: City offense without blitzing one single time. It allows Vic
- 33:35Speaker 1: to operate from a too high safety structure a lot
- 33:38Speaker 1: and then change the picture on the back end because
- 33:40Speaker 1: all he's doing is letting his front floor get the
- 33:43Speaker 1: job done and he can do things on the back end.
- 33:45Speaker 1: And clearly Goff was hurried. I mean sure, I'm sure
- 33:47Speaker 1: the wind impacted him too, but he made a lot
- 33:49Speaker 1: of throws where his back foot was not not planted
- 33:53Speaker 1: quickly and firm.
- 33:54Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean he just didn't have time. I mean
- 33:56Speaker 2: the time to pressure was two point four to one
- 33:58Speaker 2: mm hmm seconds, and I believe for hurts it was
- 34:03Speaker 2: like two point six. So and that does make a
- 34:07Speaker 2: big difference.
- 34:08Speaker 1: Sure, let's see time to pressure to boys six Yeah,
- 34:14Speaker 1: so yeah, good call. Oh look at that. I love it. It's
- 34:19Speaker 1: like I, I honestly didn't see this before. You know,
- 34:22Speaker 1: we we do this. So that was awesome, good segue.
- 34:25Speaker 2: Well, here's the thing. I could have given it to
- 34:27Speaker 2: so many people this week. You might as well give
- 34:29Speaker 2: it to the guy you know who's the architect of
- 34:32Speaker 2: the defense, the play color of the defense. Yes, let's
- 34:35Speaker 2: just let's give it to Vic Fangio.
- 34:36Speaker 1: Yeah, let's split it with him and Jordan Davis for
- 34:39Speaker 1: all those batted balls at scrimmage.
- 34:41Speaker 2: So it was either gonna be Jordan Davis, Jalen Carter,
- 34:44Speaker 2: Jalen Phillips.
- 34:45Speaker 1: It could have been Kobe Yeah. Yeah.
- 34:51Speaker 2: We don't do a Star of the statute for the
- 34:52Speaker 2: offense anymore because they haven't earned it. There's no no what. Honestly,
- 34:57Speaker 2: it could have been Jordan Mailatta. He went against hote
- 35:00Speaker 2: Uches and I don't think he allowed a single pressure.
- 35:03Speaker 2: He went against McNeil two HM and I think he
- 35:08Speaker 2: he had like fifteen matchups against them and did not
- 35:10Speaker 2: allow a single pressure. So that could have been him.
- 35:13Speaker 2: Until the offense starts performing, we're just gonna ignore that part.
- 35:17Speaker 1: So I like it. So there were so many good
- 35:19Speaker 1: players on defense, you'd give it to the guy who
- 35:20Speaker 1: put them all in position to succeed, mister Phillies Vic Fangio,
- 35:25Speaker 1: there you go. And to remind everybody that Lions. Give
- 35:29Speaker 1: us the stats on this Lion's offense and they just
- 35:31Speaker 1: shut down. Yeah.
- 35:32Speaker 2: So they were averaging twenty nine point two points per game,
- 35:35Speaker 2: which is fifth in the league, three hundred and sixty
- 35:37Speaker 2: six point nine yards per game, which is also fifth
- 35:39Speaker 2: in the league, three point five touchdowns per game, third
- 35:42Speaker 2: in the league, plus zero point zero five epa per play,
- 35:46Speaker 2: which is eighth, and thirty five point five percent pressure
- 35:49Speaker 2: which is twenty first.
- 35:51Speaker 1: So and they held that team to nine points three
- 35:54Speaker 1: hundred and seventeen yards. I think the biggest thing is
- 35:57Speaker 1: the minus point four point minus point four to nine
- 36:00Speaker 1: epa per play. That is that's it's hard when you
- 36:03Speaker 1: only when you're that bad uh per on a play
- 36:06Speaker 1: to play basis, it's gonna be hard to score and
- 36:08Speaker 1: the Lions and you don't score, you don't win. Yeah,
- 36:13Speaker 1: good stuff. We already talked about the third and fourth
- 36:15Speaker 1: down three of eight three of eighteen. It's almost I
- 36:18Speaker 1: don't think I've ever seen a game, by the way,
- 36:19Speaker 1: where a team was over five on fourth down.
- 36:22Speaker 2: Yeah. I mean, listen, the fact they kept going for
- 36:24Speaker 2: it is very Dan Campbell. But honestly, once you like
- 36:30Speaker 2: stopped getting the third one, I kind of kind of
- 36:33Speaker 2: know that how the game's going. I feel like, you
- 36:35Speaker 2: don't you go back away from that decision a little bit,
- 36:37Speaker 2: especially like the longer fourth downs they went for. I
- 36:40Speaker 2: was like, oh, okay, this is so.
- 36:42Speaker 1: There was one player on the defensive front, Sam who
- 36:45Speaker 1: I thought kind of flew under the radar because of
- 36:49Speaker 1: the games that Jalen Phillips had, Jordan Davis, Jalen Carter. Uh,
- 36:53Speaker 1: do you know who I'm referring to.
- 36:55Speaker 2: I would assume as Jayal's hunt.
- 36:56Speaker 1: Yeah, I thought he played rewatching it the next day.
- 37:00Speaker 1: It just didn't jump out to me as much live.
- 37:02Speaker 1: But man, he had a really good game.
- 37:04Speaker 2: He did. And honestly, I I even didn't say him
- 37:06Speaker 2: when I was talking about who could be the start
- 37:08Speaker 2: as actually he absolutely could be. I mean, thirty percent
- 37:10Speaker 2: win rate is elite win rate, yep, twenty five percent
- 37:15Speaker 2: pressure is pretty pretty dang good for sure. I wish
- 37:18Speaker 2: he finished with a sack, but you know it happens.
- 37:20Speaker 1: So by the way, when you see thirty percent or
- 37:24Speaker 1: higher as an elite or twenty percent or higher is elite. Yes,
- 37:27Speaker 1: win rate. Do you know what Nikobe Deane's win rate
- 37:29Speaker 1: is over the last two weeks?
- 37:31Speaker 2: H No, But I can figure it out for you.
- 37:32Speaker 1: I can tell you. I already know you have it.
- 37:34Speaker 1: It's now let me let me be fair. He doesn't
- 37:39Speaker 1: rush the passer nearly as much. I think it's on
- 37:41Speaker 1: nine or ten pass rushes. But nonetheless, even if that regressed.
- 37:46Speaker 2: A little bit, it would and it would.
- 37:48Speaker 1: Yeah, definitely, But again he get it's up on Philly Voice.
- 37:54Speaker 1: You can see it. I mean he's winning, like legitimately winning.
- 37:57Speaker 1: He's bowling over David Montgomery on a blif to sack
- 38:00Speaker 1: Jared Goff. He is basically tossing aside Josh Jacobs on
- 38:05Speaker 1: a sim and getting to the quarterback. So he's it's
- 38:08Speaker 1: there's nothing. The only thing flokish about it is that
- 38:12Speaker 1: the number, it's not as many pass rushers as Haunt
- 38:15Speaker 1: or Phillips. But I mean he's winning in his opportunities.
- 38:18Speaker 2: Yeah, absolutely, well said. And just want to note that
- 38:23Speaker 2: Brandon Graham, who had three pass rush attempts, had two
- 38:27Speaker 2: pressures on those three.
- 38:28Speaker 1: Yeah, look at him, even despite a kind of a well,
- 38:32Speaker 1: I guess for an old man, one point eight isn't
- 38:33Speaker 1: such a bad get off?
- 38:35Speaker 2: Yeah, no, for sure. I mean, listen, he knows how
- 38:38Speaker 2: to win. Still, obviously you can't scale that two for
- 38:42Speaker 2: three out. It will not be at sixty six percent
- 38:45Speaker 2: pressure rate when he's on the field. But it's just
- 38:47Speaker 2: it's nice to see as a little bit of juice left.
- 38:50Speaker 1: Yeah, and look, I think there's something encouraging about Nolan
- 38:52Speaker 1: Smith having a point nine to nine get off, which
- 38:55Speaker 1: would be the second best behind Jylex Hunt of the
- 38:57Speaker 1: four rushers, even though he didn't He'll only played thirteen
- 39:00Speaker 1: snaps and they didn't, you know, really generate too much.
- 39:03Speaker 1: He's on the pitch count Vic Fangio said it. But
- 39:06Speaker 1: at least you're getting the athleticism that he's supposed to have.
- 39:11Speaker 1: And I would imagine he's healthy and the more he
- 39:14Speaker 1: gets into the rotation, the better he'll do.
- 39:15Speaker 2: Yeah, I agree with that for sure.
- 39:18Speaker 1: Awesome, All right, now, interior defensive line, man, there's some
- 39:23Speaker 1: good numbers here there.
- 39:25Speaker 2: Totally are at what jumps out to you, in particular.
- 39:29Speaker 1: A Jomo and Davis having a pro what does an
- 39:31Speaker 1: elite win rate for you have it here right for
- 39:35Speaker 1: about fifteen percent. The fact that those guys are fourteen
- 39:38Speaker 1: percent and those are a Jomo okay, But like Davis,
- 39:41Speaker 1: it's showing that he's his pass rush is coming along,
- 39:44Speaker 1: even though he had a very slow get off. But
- 39:46Speaker 1: I wonder sometimes is the get off only on pass
- 39:50Speaker 1: rushes him.
- 39:52Speaker 2: I don't think so, because it is beating the blocker
- 39:57Speaker 2: within two point five seconds of the snap, So I
- 40:00Speaker 2: do think it would account for everything.
- 40:03Speaker 1: Sometimes in these guys, they don't full go full throttle.
- 40:09Speaker 1: In fact, I think in this game, you saw them
- 40:11Speaker 1: intentionally holding up and then batting the pass at scrimmage
- 40:14Speaker 1: because of what they saw on tape. So that might
- 40:16Speaker 1: impact your get off if you're not if you're intentionally
- 40:19Speaker 1: holding up a little bit and then you know, trying
- 40:21Speaker 1: to bat the past the last second.
- 40:23Speaker 2: Right, I think you're absolutely right, And you'll see a
- 40:27Speaker 2: case where I don't agree with NFL pro stats as
- 40:31Speaker 2: we go to the next category, you'll.
- 40:32Speaker 1: See, yeah, really quickly though Jille and Carter has a
- 40:36Speaker 1: three hundred pound interior defensive lineman, having a get off
- 40:38Speaker 1: at a round an edge rusher at one point seven
- 40:41Speaker 1: is pretty good too.
- 40:42Speaker 2: I mean, listen, they've played him on the edge a
- 40:44Speaker 2: little bit, do I have been. I mean that's part
- 40:47Speaker 2: of it. I mean, angles are important, and it's a
- 40:49Speaker 2: little bit easier in theory. I mean, listen, I wouldn't
- 40:52Speaker 2: be able to do it. I don't think you'd be
- 40:54Speaker 2: no offense. I don't think you'd be able to do
- 40:55Speaker 2: it either, But theoretically it's easier on the edge for
- 41:00Speaker 2: a couple of reasons. But yeah, right, all.
- 41:02Speaker 1: Right, thanks to NFL pro there for those that that
- 41:05Speaker 1: all right, you want to talk about coverage here, yes,
- 41:08Speaker 1: go ahead.
- 41:09Speaker 2: So these are some stats I found about Quinnon Mitchell.
- 41:11Speaker 2: He was targeted six times and allowed zero receptions. It's
- 41:14Speaker 2: tied for the most targets without allowing a reception in
- 41:18Speaker 2: a team over the last two seasons. I'll let that
- 41:20Speaker 2: one breathe for a second before.
- 41:22Speaker 1: The most targets without allowing a reception over the last
- 41:26Speaker 1: two seasons and six times no reception. Wow, that's pretty impressive.
- 41:33Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, it's it's very impressive. And I mean it's
- 41:36Speaker 2: the third game this season where Mitchell did not allow
- 41:38Speaker 2: a reception.
- 41:39Speaker 1: My gosh, I mean, I think he's gonna make at
- 41:42Speaker 1: least pro Bowl. I think he's making a really good
- 41:44Speaker 1: case for All Pro, especially the way they're using him now,
- 41:47Speaker 1: the shadow receivers and things like that.
- 41:49Speaker 2: M hm.
- 41:50Speaker 1: I mean I think it's fair, right, I mean, at
- 41:54Speaker 1: least Pro Bowl, he's got to be at least Pro Bowl.
- 41:57Speaker 2: I don't know he's playing all Pro level, it really is,
- 42:00Speaker 2: That's what I said, at least I know. I'm just saying,
- 42:02Speaker 2: I just don't know. I mean, listen, it might be
- 42:05Speaker 2: second team, but I just don't see. There are not
- 42:08Speaker 2: three other corners that are better than him, So.
- 42:11Speaker 1: You're probably right about that. Awesome stuff.
- 42:14Speaker 2: And then on thirty nine coverage snaps tied for the
- 42:17Speaker 2: third most coverage snaps by an outside corner without allowing
- 42:20Speaker 2: a reception. He's catch rate over expectation minus forty six
- 42:26Speaker 2: point nine percent, which is incredible, by the way. And
- 42:29Speaker 2: then his cover GPA was also incredible at minus eight
- 42:32Speaker 2: point three and he's allowed forty one point nine percent
- 42:36Speaker 2: completion percentage and coverage this season. That's the lowest by
- 42:39Speaker 2: any player with fifty plus targets in the season since
- 42:42Speaker 2: twenty eighteen.
- 42:43Speaker 1: Oh my god, now don't ask me who the player
- 42:46Speaker 1: was in twenty eighteen because I won't get it seven
- 42:49Speaker 1: years ago. I don't. We don't even know if it's
- 42:51Speaker 1: you don't have the name, do you.
- 42:53Speaker 2: If I had to guess, it's it's either Josh Norman
- 42:55Speaker 2: or Richard Sherman.
- 42:56Speaker 1: But that's a good one, Josh.
- 42:57Speaker 2: I don't know which one it would be for sureman,
- 43:01Speaker 2: I mean I could look right now, but.
- 43:05Speaker 1: That's the heck of a guess. That's probably gonna be
- 43:08Speaker 1: better than anything two thousand and eight. No, I don't
- 43:10Speaker 1: know if twenty eighteen, because the Legion of Boom was
- 43:13Speaker 1: best in twenty thirteen twenty fourteen, right.
- 43:15Speaker 2: Then it's probably.
- 43:17Speaker 1: And then Norman had his best year is fifteen sixties,
- 43:20Speaker 1: so this.
- 43:21Speaker 2: Is eighteen yees, so it was passed that year. Yeah,
- 43:26Speaker 2: I think you're right.
- 43:28Speaker 1: I wonder if it would be like Steph Gilmour, New
- 43:30Speaker 1: England Patriots.
- 43:30Speaker 2: Oh, that could be a good one.
- 43:32Speaker 1: Now, we gotta know. I'm trying to think of a
- 43:36Speaker 1: real elite corner. Maybe a year that like tra Davious
- 43:41Speaker 1: White stayed healthy. That might have been the one year
- 43:46Speaker 1: certain's not in the league yet. I don't know. I
- 43:49Speaker 1: think Gilmour would be my best guess on.
- 43:51Speaker 2: That it's just loading very slowly right now, building anticipation
- 43:57Speaker 2: for us truly.
- 43:58Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, I'm just trying to go through some other
- 44:01Speaker 1: anybody on the Viking. Let's see. So the Eagles one
- 44:03Speaker 1: in twenty seventeen. Who won the Super Bowl twenty eighteen?
- 44:06Speaker 1: That was the that was the who went? That was
- 44:13Speaker 1: the year? The year? It was?
- 44:14Speaker 2: It was the Patriots, wasn't it? Right?
- 44:17Speaker 1: Yeah? But it was who did they play? Now? I
- 44:19Speaker 1: can't remember who they played? So the Eagles lost to
- 44:23Speaker 1: the The Eagles beat the Bears in the first round. They
- 44:25Speaker 1: lost to the Saints. The Saints lost to the to
- 44:27Speaker 1: the Vikings on the Minneapolis Miracle, right, but the Vikings
- 44:31Speaker 1: didn't make the Super Bowl. Hold on, who did the
- 44:34Speaker 1: Patriots play? Wasn't the Falcons? Was it?
- 44:38Speaker 2: No?
- 44:38Speaker 1: Because those years before the Yeah, man, I'm drawing like
- 44:43Speaker 1: this crazy blank that I can't even but there would
- 44:48Speaker 1: be no. But I think Gilmore was on the Patriots
- 44:51Speaker 1: that year. That's why it jumped out to me.
- 44:54Speaker 2: So it is him. It so that says I think
- 44:59Speaker 2: it is Gilmore. I think I think it is because
- 45:03Speaker 2: Gilmore had forty five point two.
- 45:07Speaker 1: Well, Aaron Donald was defensive player of the year the
- 45:10Speaker 1: year and this must have been in the year that
- 45:11Speaker 1: the Rams. It must have been in the Patriots Rams. Right, Yeah,
- 45:15Speaker 1: I think that's right.
- 45:17Speaker 2: I wasn't one hundred percent sure of that, but that
- 45:18Speaker 2: sounds right.
- 45:21Speaker 1: Yes, that was the really ugly thirteen to three game,
- 45:23Speaker 1: now I remember. Okay. Yeah, well, either way, it was
- 45:27Speaker 1: fun trying to figure that out. If it jumped on here, I.
- 45:30Speaker 2: Think it's it may be Marlon Humphrey.
- 45:35Speaker 1: Marlon Humphrey of the Ravens.
- 45:37Speaker 2: Yeah, but it's his outside No, it doesn't, they outside corner.
- 45:39Speaker 2: Hold on, I.
- 45:40Speaker 1: Guess it doesn't have to. Oh yeah, I could. Okay,
- 45:44Speaker 1: that's actually a pretty good one too, although he didn't
- 45:45Speaker 1: even make All Pro or Pro Bowl that year. His
- 45:48Speaker 1: first All Pro was twenty nineteen.
- 45:50Speaker 2: No, the problem is just everybody is a lower completion percentage.
- 45:54Speaker 2: That's why I'm just trying to figure it out. I'm
- 45:55Speaker 2: trying to match the target. I'm not sure who it is.
- 45:59Speaker 1: Okay, no worry, my.
- 46:00Speaker 2: Guess was off, though, I'll admit I'll get cooked into
- 46:03Speaker 2: comments for it. It's okay.
- 46:05Speaker 1: Well, the last thing I wanted to point out your
- 46:07Speaker 1: your note on Cooper to.
- 46:08Speaker 2: Gene Yes, he led the Eagles with a minus eleven
- 46:13Speaker 2: point two cover GPA. Zach Baum was next it minus
- 46:16Speaker 2: six point eight cover GPA, which is really impressive. And
- 46:19Speaker 2: then every player on the Eagles allowed a negative catch
- 46:22Speaker 2: rate over expectation, which is kind of crazy, except for
- 46:25Speaker 2: Jordan Davis. They gave They gave the two Gibbs receptions,
- 46:31Speaker 2: my nearest defender. I watched both plays because I really
- 46:34Speaker 2: wanted to talk intelligently about it, just about what it
- 46:36Speaker 2: was talking about. Yeah, I mean, I don't think that's
- 46:40Speaker 2: a fair.
- 46:41Speaker 1: I don't think so either.
- 46:42Speaker 2: I don't think it's general to give an interior defensive
- 46:45Speaker 2: lineman credit.
- 46:46Speaker 1: I was just about to say that I don't think
- 46:47Speaker 1: it's fair to almost anybody one on one Gibbs in
- 46:50Speaker 1: an oprafield.
- 46:51Speaker 2: That was that too, Yeah, but I wanted to see
- 46:54Speaker 2: why they attribute it to it, because the cool thing
- 46:56Speaker 2: about NFL Pro what it does is it'll have a
- 46:59Speaker 2: yellow highlight on some of the things and you can
- 47:01Speaker 2: click on it and see what exactly the film says
- 47:04Speaker 2: on the stat which is I think is one of
- 47:06Speaker 2: the coolest integrations of any they have because it explains
- 47:10Speaker 2: it right. I mean, the best thing that we always
- 47:13Speaker 2: look for especially here is transparency, and NFL pro has
- 47:16Speaker 2: one of the most transparent models out there, so.
- 47:19Speaker 1: Absolutely life changing for me, certainly in research data and
- 47:23Speaker 1: then even reporting so awesome stuff. Sam really look forward
- 47:28Speaker 1: to our next one. It'll be a little bit because
- 47:29Speaker 1: we're gonna get two games in between. Of course, Sunday's
- 47:32Speaker 1: game against the Cowboys, which is huge because it's the Cowboys,
- 47:35Speaker 1: and then the historic first time for the Eagles I believe,
- 47:39Speaker 1: Black Friday game against the Chicago Bears, who themselves are
- 47:43Speaker 1: a very interesting team and quietly place in the mix,
- 47:48Speaker 1: not just first place, but with seven wins they're in
- 47:51Speaker 1: the mix for the number one seed as well. Sure
- 47:53Speaker 1: it's hard to believe or say, but it's there.
- 47:55Speaker 2: So you saw the alliance right on Twitter, the alliance
- 47:59Speaker 2: where you from the with us. There was like an
- 48:01Speaker 2: underground alliance between Eagles fans and Bears fans. Because the
- 48:06Speaker 2: Bears beat every NFC East team and the Eagles beat
- 48:08Speaker 2: and every NFC North team. There was this like on Twitter,
- 48:12Speaker 2: there was this community of Eagles and Bears fans that
- 48:15Speaker 2: came together and they dred percent. Just it's so fun
- 48:21Speaker 2: and to see the culmination of it. And one of
- 48:24Speaker 2: the things that I saw in the comments of it,
- 48:26Speaker 2: they were like, we hope the Eagles and Bears his
- 48:28Speaker 2: knee at every single down and just tie. It was
- 48:33Speaker 2: such a cool synergy between fan bases that you don't
- 48:35Speaker 2: see a lot, and honestly, it really wasn't reported much,
- 48:38Speaker 2: but I saw it everywhere on Twitter.
- 48:40Speaker 1: That's so funny. I'm gonna have to go go down
- 48:42Speaker 1: a rabbit hole and find that. I'm happy for Bears fans.
- 48:45Speaker 1: They are listen. That's a great football city and it's
- 48:49Speaker 1: not a city that's seen a lot of great football
- 48:52Speaker 1: for a long time. So I'm happy for them, and
- 48:56Speaker 1: I think it's gonna be a really fun matchup as
- 48:57Speaker 1: a team that's a little bit like the Eagles, and
- 49:00Speaker 1: you know, they've built up their offensive line. They run
- 49:03Speaker 1: the ball extremely well. I think they lead the NFL
- 49:05Speaker 1: and explosive runs. Their defenses come along. You know, they're
- 49:09Speaker 1: working on the quarterback a little bit. That's where they're
- 49:11Speaker 1: a little bit different, whereas Jalen Hurts the Super Bowl MVP.
- 49:13Speaker 1: But offensive conceptually, they do a lot of interesting things.
- 49:17Speaker 1: So I'm actually I don't think I've been this excited
- 49:20Speaker 1: for an Eagles Bears game since twenty eighteen playoff game
- 49:22Speaker 1: that way, and not even that game. You know, there
- 49:24Speaker 1: was something about like Mitchell Trubisky a quarterback there that
- 49:28Speaker 1: I don't know that that was not a fun Bears team.
- 49:30Speaker 1: That was a great defensive Bears team.
- 49:32Speaker 2: Yeah, it really was. I mean, listen, Eagles Bear is
- 49:35Speaker 2: always a good time. I mean, you have some historic
- 49:37Speaker 2: matchups for sure, for sure.
- 49:40Speaker 1: All right, Sam, thanks again. We'll catch up with the
- 49:43Speaker 1: after those two games, and we will do this all
- 49:46Speaker 1: once again for Sam Finkel, Im, Jeff Mosher, we all
- 49:48Speaker 1: thank you for watching inside the Data on Inside the
