- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. It's Thursday.
- 0:15That is the 6th of February. Don't know about you, but
- 0:19growing up I always found February the hardest month to
- 0:22spell because it just made no sense because nobody actually
- 0:25says February. Or maybe you do and if you do,
- 0:29well that is very correct if you well done.
- 0:30But here we are on Thursday working our way through this
- 0:35book of Second Kings and we have seen the power of Elijah
- 0:40transfer through to Elijah and get a bit of a 2X power up.
- 0:46And now we're going to see Elijah come into his own as
- 0:50God's prophet. So why don't you join with me as
- 0:54we continue in the story hearing what God will do for His people
- 0:58through His prophet Elijah as we read together Second Kings
- 1:02chapter 4. One day, the widow of a member
- 1:15of the group of prophets came to Elijah and cried out.
- 1:19My husband, who served you is dead, and you know how he feared
- 1:24the Lord. But now a creditor has come,
- 1:27threatening to take my two sons as slaves.
- 1:31What can I do to help you? Elijah asked.
- 1:34Tell me, what do you have in the house?
- 1:37Nothing at all except a flask of olive oil, she replied.
- 1:42And Elisha said, Borrow as many empty jars as you can from your
- 1:47friends and neighbours. Then go into your house with
- 1:50your sons and shut the door behind you.
- 1:53Pour olive oil from your flask into the jars, setting each one
- 1:58aside when it is filled. So she did as she was told.
- 2:03Her sons kept bringing jars to her, and she filled one after
- 2:07another. Soon every container was full to
- 2:10the brim. Bring me another jar, she said
- 2:14to one of her sons. There aren't any more, he told
- 2:17her. And then the olive oil stopped
- 2:20flowing. When she told the man of God
- 2:23what had happened, he said to her, Now sell the olive oil and
- 2:27pay your debts, and you and your sons can live on whatever is
- 2:31left over. One day Elisha went to the town
- 2:36of Shunham. A wealthy woman lived there and
- 2:39she urged him to come to her home for a meal.
- 2:42After that, whenever he passed that way, he would stop there
- 2:46for something to eat. She said to her husband, I am
- 2:50sure this man who stops in from time to time is a holy man of
- 2:54God. Let's build a small room for him
- 2:57on the roof and furnish it with a bed, a table, a chair and a
- 3:01lamp. Then he will have a place to
- 3:03stay whenever he comes by. One day Elisha returned to
- 3:07Shunam and when he went up to this upper room to rest, he said
- 3:12to his servant Gehazi, Tell the woman from Shunam.
- 3:16I want to speak to her when she appeared, Elisha said to Gehazi,
- 3:22Tell her, We appreciate the kind concern you have shown us.
- 3:26What can we do for you? Can we put in a good word for
- 3:30you to the king or to the commander of the army?
- 3:34No, she replied, My family takes good care of me.
- 3:39Later, Elisha asked Gehazi what can we do for her?
- 3:44Gehazi replied She doesn't have a son and her husband is an old
- 3:49man. Call her back again, Elisha told
- 3:52him. When the woman returned.
- 3:55Elisha said to her as she stood in the doorway.
- 3:58Next year at this time, you will be holding a son in your arms.
- 4:04No, my Lord, she cried. O man of God, don't deceive me
- 4:08and get my hopes up like that. But sure enough, the woman soon
- 4:13became pregnant, and at that time, the following year, she
- 4:17had a son. Just as Elisha had said, One day
- 4:22when a child was older, he went out to help his father who was
- 4:25working with the harvesters. Suddenly he cried out.
- 4:29My head hurts, my head hurts, His father said to one of the
- 4:34servants carry him home to his mother.
- 4:38So the servant took him home and his mother held him on her lap.
- 4:42But around noontime he died. She carried him up and laid him
- 4:47on the bed of the man of God and shut the door and left him
- 4:51there. She sent a message to her
- 4:53husband. Send one of the servants and a
- 4:56donkey so that I can hurry to the man of God and come right
- 5:00back. Why go to day?
- 5:03He asked. It is neither a new moon
- 5:05festival nor a Sabbath. But she said, it will be all
- 5:10right. So she saddled the donkey and
- 5:13said to the servant, Hurry, don't slow down unless I tell
- 5:17you to. As she approached the man of God
- 5:21at Mount Carmel, Elisha saw her in the distance.
- 5:24He said to Gehazi, look, the woman from Shurnham is coming,
- 5:30run out to meet her and ask her, is everything all right with
- 5:33you, your husband and your child?
- 5:36Yes, the woman told Gehazi everything is fine.
- 5:40But when she came to the man of God at the mountain, she fell to
- 5:44the ground before him and caught hold of his feet.
- 5:47Gehazi began to push her away, but the man of God said leave
- 5:52her alone. She is deeply troubled but the
- 5:55Lord has not told me what it is. Then she said, did I ask you for
- 6:00a son, my Lord? And didn't I say don't deceive
- 6:04me and get my hopes up? Then Elisha said to Gehazi, get
- 6:08ready to travel, take my staff and go.
- 6:12Don't talk to anyone along the way.
- 6:14Go quickly and lay the staff on the child's face.
- 6:18But the boy's mother said, As surely as the Lord lives and you
- 6:22yourself live, I won't go home unless you go with me.
- 6:26So Elisha returned with her. Gehazi hurried on ahead and laid
- 6:31the staff on the child's face. But nothing happened.
- 6:36There was no sign of life. He returned to meet Elisha and
- 6:40told him the child is still dead.
- 6:44When Elisha arrived, the child was indeed dead, lying there on
- 6:48the prophet's bed. He went in alone and shut the
- 6:52door behind him and prayed to the Lord.
- 6:56Then he lay down on the child's body, placing his mouth on the
- 6:59child's mouth, his eyes on the child's eyes, and his hands on
- 7:03the child's hands. And as he stretched out on him,
- 7:08the child's body began to grow warm again.
- 7:12Elisha got up, walked back and forth across the room once, and
- 7:17then stretched himself out again on the child.
- 7:20This time the boy sneezed 7 times and opened his eyes.
- 7:26Then Elisha summoned Ghazi. Call the child's mother, he
- 7:30said. And when she came in, Elisha
- 7:33said, Here, take your son. She fell at his feet and bowed
- 7:39before him, overwhelmed with gratitude.
- 7:43Then she took her son in her arms and carried him downstairs.
- 7:49Elisha now returned to Gilgal, and there was a famine in the
- 7:53land. One day, as the group of
- 7:55prophets was seated before him, he said to his servant, put a
- 7:59large pot on the fire and make some Stew for the rest of the
- 8:03group. One of the young men went out
- 8:06into the field to gather herbs, and came back with a pocketful
- 8:09of wild gourds. He shredded them and put them
- 8:12into the pot without realising they were poisonous.
- 8:16Some of the Stew was served to the men, but after they had
- 8:19eaten a bite or two, they cried out, Man of God, there's poison
- 8:24in this Stew, so they would not eat it.
- 8:28Elisha said bring me some flour. Then he threw it in the pot and
- 8:33said, now it's all right, go ahead and eat, and then it did
- 8:38not harm them. One day a man from Bal Shalasha
- 8:42brought the man of God a sack of fresh grain and 20 loaves of
- 8:46barley bread made from the first grain of the harvest.
- 8:50Elisha said, give it to the people so they can eat.
- 8:53What? His servant exclaimed, Feed 100
- 8:57people with only this. But Elisha repeated, give it to
- 9:01the people so they can eat, for this is what the Lord says.
- 9:07Everyone will eat, and there will even be some leftover.
- 9:11And when they gave it to the people, there was plenty for all
- 9:16and some leftover, just as the Lord had promised.
- 9:28Our Lord, what a wonderful reminder this chapter is about
- 9:32your incredible provision for us that everything in this world is
- 9:38your creation and You have authority over it.
- 9:44Lord, as we find ourselves thinking in terms of human
- 9:47constraints. Lord, I just pray that you blow
- 9:51open our mind for the possibilities of what You are
- 9:55capable of, so that when we pray, we can pray with faith and
- 10:01with assuredness that You are indeed mighty above all else,
- 10:08and that Your creation bows to You and your authority.
- 10:12So we just lift you up and we place you in your rightful place
- 10:17on that throne above all else, as God of all, as King of all,
- 10:24and we worship your holy and mighty name.
- 10:30Oh, you are wonderful, our God, and we thank you and we praise
- 10:35you all in the name of your Son Jesus, Amen.
