- 0:22SPEAKER_00: Let me begin this episode with a really crazy statement, and then I'll break this down for us.
- 0:27SPEAKER_00: Here's the statement.
- 0:29SPEAKER_00: I think one of the most important things you will ever learn as a human being is that you do not have an objective grip on reality.
- 0:37SPEAKER_00: Now again, I know this is a weird statement, so let me explain.
- 0:41SPEAKER_00: I think as humans who perceive ourselves as logical or rational beings, we have deluded ourselves into believing that we see things as they are.
- 0:50SPEAKER_00: We assume that we can see ourselves and everybody else clearly.
- 0:54SPEAKER_00: We trust that our perceptions about our level of talent and other people's level of talent is pretty much on target.
- 1:02SPEAKER_00: But in reality, I think that's almost never the case.
- 1:04SPEAKER_00: We tend to underestimate our own potential while we overestimate everybody else's potential.
- 1:10SPEAKER_00: In other words, many times we believe that everybody else deserves success, but for some reason, we don't.
- 1:16SPEAKER_00: Now, of course, not everybody sees the world this way, but most writers do, in my experience.
- 1:21SPEAKER_00: When we see other people succeed, we believe they deserved it more, or they're probably more talented than we are.
- 1:27SPEAKER_00: But the reality is that they probably just worked harder, they had better connections, or they were more creative with their marketing.
- 1:34SPEAKER_00: So my question to you is, why not you?
- 1:37SPEAKER_00: Why shouldn't you also get to experience success?
- 1:41SPEAKER_00: Is there any reason you shouldn't be just as successful as the next writer?
- 1:45SPEAKER_00: They're no more deserving than you are.
- 1:47SPEAKER_00: In fact, none of us really deserves anything in this life.
- 1:50SPEAKER_00: We all start this life with nothing and we will exit this life, not being able to carry anything with us into the next realm.
- 1:58SPEAKER_00: Success in your writing doesn't have anything to do with what anybody deserves or doesn't deserve.
- 2:03SPEAKER_00: Success comes as a result of actions that you take consistently over time.
- 2:08SPEAKER_00: Now, yes, of course, some people are more connected, some people have more resources and so forth, but all that really is irrelevant because we all have the same number of opportunities.
- 2:18SPEAKER_00: So don't ask why them.
- 2:20SPEAKER_00: Instead, ask, why not me?
- 2:23SPEAKER_00: Success doesn't come to people who deserve it, it comes to those who work for it.
- 2:29SPEAKER_00: Here's today's challenge.
- 2:31SPEAKER_00: Do you believe that you deserve to be just as successful as the next person?
- 2:35SPEAKER_00: And if not, what's keeping you from feeling that way?
