- 0:00Speaker 1: Lesejo Mugwena pressed her fingers into the wet limestone and
- 0:04Speaker 1: felt the door breathe. Not a metaphor, the stone actually inhaled,
- 0:10Speaker 1: a slow swell that pushed warm water against her palms
- 0:14Speaker 1: and then pulled it back with a soft, sucking sigh.
- 0:18Speaker 1: Behind her, the sand guardian named Khao watched from the shallows,
- 0:22Speaker 1: his reed-thin body half-submerged, his eyes reflecting the bioluminescent veins
- 0:28Speaker 1: of that crawled across the cave ceiling like lightning trapped
- 0:32Speaker 1: in amber. You feel it now, Khao said. His voice
- 0:36Speaker 1: was the sound of pebbles rolling in a tin. The
- 0:40Speaker 1: door is not a thing. It is a conversation. You
- 0:44Speaker 1: must learn its grammar before you speak. Leseho nodded, but
- 0:48Speaker 1: her mind was still half on Mars, on Thabo's face
- 0:52Speaker 1: as the heartroot door closed between them, on the bronze
- 0:55Speaker 1: spires of the living city. on Orun's warning that the
- 0:59Speaker 1: MEP strike team would reach the Gansi salt pans by dawn.
- 1:04Speaker 1: She had maybe six hours. Six hours to learn a
- 1:07Speaker 1: language that had taken the sun 10,000 years to keep alive.
- 1:12Speaker 1: Show me again, she said. Khao drifted closer, his webbed
- 1:17Speaker 1: fingers tracing a spiral on the stone. The water around
- 1:20Speaker 1: his hand began to glow, faint blue at first, then brighter,
- 1:25Speaker 1: until the spiral lifted off the rock and hung in
- 1:28Speaker 1: the air like a thread of light. This is the
- 1:31Speaker 1: word for open, he said, but it is also the
- 1:34Speaker 1: word for welcome. The door does not distinguish between the two.
- 1:39Speaker 1: That is why the MEP will fail. They will try
- 1:42Speaker 1: to force it, and it will read their force as
- 1:44Speaker 1: a greeting, and answer in kind. Lesejo stared at the
- 1:49Speaker 1: glowing spiral. So if they blast it, it blasts back?
- 1:54Speaker 1: It drowns them, Hao corrected. The door has a sense
- 1:57Speaker 1: of humour. She almost laughed. Almost. Then the cave shuddered,
- 2:03Speaker 1: a deep tremor that sent ripples racing across the pool
- 2:07Speaker 1: and dislodged a shower of limestone grit from the ceiling.
- 2:10Speaker 1: Hao's glow dimmed. His eyes went wide, then narrow. They
- 2:15Speaker 1: are early, he hissed. The MEP! They have entered the
- 2:19Speaker 1: salt pans from above! Lesejo's stomach dropped. How? Orun said,
- 2:25Speaker 1: Orun is not here. Khao turned and began wading toward
- 2:29Speaker 1: a narrow passage at the far end of the cavern. Come,
- 2:32Speaker 1: we must reach the tidal chamber before they do. If
- 2:35Speaker 1: they reach the door without the language, they will not
- 2:38Speaker 1: just fail, they will wake the thing the door was
- 2:40Speaker 1: built to keep sleeping. What thing? Khao didn't answer. He
- 2:45Speaker 1: disappeared into the passage and Leseho had no choice but
- 2:49Speaker 1: to follow. 300 million kilometers away, Thabo stood in the
- 2:53Speaker 1: heart root's shadow and pressed his palm against the crystal trunk.
- 2:58Speaker 1: The tree hummed, a low vibration that travelled up his
- 3:02Speaker 1: arm and settled behind his eyes. He had been trying
- 3:05Speaker 1: for hours to reach Lesejo through the pendant Orun had
- 3:09Speaker 1: given him, the one that carried a sliver of the
- 3:11Speaker 1: heart root's memory. But the connection kept slipping, like trying
- 3:16Speaker 1: to hold water in a fist. You're pushing too hard,
- 3:19Speaker 1: said a voice behind him. Tabo turned. Orun stood at
- 3:24Speaker 1: the edge of the crystal grove, her bronze skin catching
- 3:27Speaker 1: the light of the two moons. She looked tired, more
- 3:31Speaker 1: tired than he had ever seen her. She's in danger,
- 3:35Speaker 1: Tabo said. I can feel it. The MEP are... I know.
- 3:39Speaker 1: Orun stepped closer, her silver eyes unreadable. The strike team
- 3:44Speaker 1: entered the Gansi caves twenty minutes ago. They have a device,
- 3:48Speaker 1: a resonance hammer. It will shatter the tidal door's outer
- 3:52Speaker 1: seal within the hour. Thabo's blood went cold. Then we
- 3:56Speaker 1: have to warn her. Can you open a door? Can you...
- 3:59Speaker 1: I cannot open a door to a place I have
- 4:02Speaker 1: never been, Orun said. But you can. Thabo blinked. What?
- 4:07Speaker 1: Orun reached into the folds of her robe and withdrew
- 4:10Speaker 1: a small, dark stone, smooth as river glass. This is
- 4:15Speaker 1: a seed of the heart root. It remembers every door
- 4:18Speaker 1: it has ever groaned. If you plant it in the
- 4:21Speaker 1: right memory, a memory of Lesejo, of the cave, of
- 4:25Speaker 1: the water, it will grow a path to her. Thabo
- 4:29Speaker 1: took the stone. It was warm, almost hot, and it
- 4:33Speaker 1: pulsed in time with his heartbeat. What memory? The one
- 4:37Speaker 1: that matters most, Orun said. Choose carefully. The seed will
- 4:42Speaker 1: take what you give it, and it will not give
- 4:44Speaker 1: it back. Thabo closed his eyes. He thought of Lesejo.
- 4:49Speaker 1: Not the astronaut, not the key, but the girl he
- 4:52Speaker 1: had known in Soweto, the one who had laughed at
- 4:55Speaker 1: his terrible jokes and shared her lunch with him when
- 4:58Speaker 1: he had forgotten his own. He thought of the day
- 5:01Speaker 1: they had climbed the kopi behind her grandmother's house and
- 5:04Speaker 1: watched the sun set over the city, the sky turning
- 5:08Speaker 1: the colour of a bruise. She had told him then
- 5:11Speaker 1: that she wanted to see the stars. He had told
- 5:14Speaker 1: her she was crazy. Now she was on Mars and
- 5:18Speaker 1: he was here, and the stars were the least of
- 5:21Speaker 1: their problems. He pressed the seed into the memory and
- 5:25Speaker 1: felt it take root. In the drowned caves, Lesejo followed
- 5:29Speaker 1: Khao through a tunnel so narrow she had to turn sideways.
- 5:33Speaker 1: The water was up to her chest now, warm and
- 5:36Speaker 1: mineral heavy, and the bioluminescent veins had given way to
- 5:40Speaker 1: total darkness. She could hear Ao breathing ahead of her,
- 5:44Speaker 1: a steady rhythm that kept her grounded. How much further?
- 5:49Speaker 1: She whispered. We are here, he said. The tunnel opened
- 5:53Speaker 1: into a vast chamber and Lesejo forgot how to breathe.
- 5:58Speaker 1: The tidal door rose from a black pool at the centre,
- 6:02Speaker 1: a slab of stone so tall it disappeared into the
- 6:05Speaker 1: darkness above. It was covered in spirals, thousands of them,
- 6:10Speaker 1: each one glowing faintly, each one a word she didn't know.
- 6:15Speaker 1: The air hummed with a sound like a choir singing underwater.
- 6:20Speaker 1: And on the far side of the pool, a dozen
- 6:23Speaker 1: figures in black armour were setting up a device on
- 6:26Speaker 1: a tripod. The resonance hammer. Its barrel pointed directly at
- 6:31Speaker 1: the door. They're going to fire, Lesejo said. They are
- 6:34Speaker 1: going to try, Ao corrected. He pressed a hand to
- 6:38Speaker 1: her back. You must speak the word. Now, before they...
- 6:42Speaker 1: The hammer fired. The sound was not a bang, but
- 6:46Speaker 1: a scream, a high, keeming note that shattered the silence
- 6:51Speaker 1: and sent cracks racing across the door's surface. Lesejo felt
- 6:55Speaker 1: the word rise in her throat, the spiral for open,
- 6:59Speaker 1: the spiral for welcome, and she spoke it. The door answered.
- 7:04Speaker 1: A black hole opened where the stone had been, a
- 7:08Speaker 1: perfect circle of nothing that pulled at her like a riptide.
- 7:12Speaker 1: She heard Ao shout her name. felt his hand close
- 7:15Speaker 1: around her wrist, but the pull was too strong. The
- 7:19Speaker 1: last thing she saw was the MEP soldiers scrambling backward,
- 7:23Speaker 1: their device exploding in a shower of sparks, and then darkness.
- 7:29Speaker 1: And then light. She opened her eyes. She was lying
- 7:33Speaker 1: on grass, actual grass, green and soft and smelling of rain.
- 7:39Speaker 1: Above her, a sky the colour of lapis stretched to infinity.
- 7:44Speaker 1: and in the distance she could see towers of white
- 7:47Speaker 1: stone rising from a forest of silver trees. A city,
- 7:52Speaker 1: a living city. A figure stood over her, tall and slender,
- 7:57Speaker 1: with skin the colour of deep space and eyes that
- 8:00Speaker 1: held galaxies. You are the one who spoke the word,
- 8:04Speaker 1: it said. We have been waiting for you, Lesejo Mugwena.
- 8:08Speaker 1: She sat up slowly, her heart pounding. Where am I?
- 8:13Speaker 1: The figure smiled. You are on Mars, the real Mars,
- 8:18Speaker 1: and you are the first human to ever see it.
