- 0:12SPEAKER_00: Hey my friend, welcome to today's episode of the Daily Rider Podcast.
- 0:17SPEAKER_00: Let's talk about one of the more uncomfortable truths of the author life.
- 0:22SPEAKER_00: It actually has nothing to do with books, but it has everything to do with how others perceive you.
- 0:27SPEAKER_00: And therefore, it means it has everything to do with your social standing and how much other people want to be around you.
- 0:33SPEAKER_00: So here's the uncomfortable truth that I want to share.
- 0:36SPEAKER_00: People judge you by the company you keep.
- 0:39SPEAKER_00: If you spend time with positive, successful, generous people, you'll be perceived the same way.
- 0:45SPEAKER_00: You'll borrow their influence and other people will want to be around you because other people's goodwill and positivity will be transferred to you.
- 0:52SPEAKER_00: Now, of course, you can destroy this goodwill by being a jerk, but if you keep good company, it's greatly going to help your success.
- 1:00SPEAKER_00: I mean, you can be around the greatest people in the world, but if if you're not acting the right way, and if you're if you're selfish and you're not generous and you act like a jerk, then you're going to destroy that borrowed goodwill.
- 1:10SPEAKER_00: But because you're listening to this podcast, I'm assuming you're a pretty cool person.
- 1:13SPEAKER_00: Now, the opposite of what I'm talking about is also true.
- 1:16SPEAKER_00: If you spend time with negative people who complain, if you spend time with people who aren't growing and who tear other people down, then you're going to be perceived the same way as well.
- 1:25SPEAKER_00: You can do a lot of good things yourself, but if you spend all your time and you associate with those kinds of people, that's bad.
- 1:32SPEAKER_00: You know, as the saying goes, bad company corrupts good character, and that's absolutely true.
- 1:37SPEAKER_00: You're judged by the company that you keep.
- 1:40SPEAKER_00: Now, this may not be fair, but I'm not here to tell you what's fair.
- 1:44SPEAKER_00: I'm here to tell you what's real and how the world actually works.
- 1:46SPEAKER_00: And the way the world works is by social relationships.
- 1:50SPEAKER_00: We're always looking for ways to gauge whether somebody is a potential threat.
- 1:53SPEAKER_00: And one of the ways that we do this is by seeing who they spend time with.
- 1:57SPEAKER_00: You might see a good, a good guy or a good gal.
- 2:00SPEAKER_00: They may be actually good, but if they're around people who are negative and they're not positive and they're causing trouble and causing problems, you're going to perceive that person as a threat, regardless of whether or not they actually are.
- 2:12SPEAKER_00: And one of the fastest shortcuts to success is by spending time with people who other people like to be around.
- 2:19SPEAKER_00: And as a result, they will also be open to spending time with you and giving you opportunities.
- 2:24SPEAKER_00: And this can greatly help your writing and business success.
- 2:28SPEAKER_00: It can greatly open up amazing opportunities for you.
- 2:31SPEAKER_00: So again, it this is this is not just about your talent or your skills or your ability.
- 2:36SPEAKER_00: It's not just about the books you can write or doing a podcast or putting out content or whatever.
- 2:41SPEAKER_00: It's really about who you hang out with.
- 2:43SPEAKER_00: So the better quality of person that you hang out with, and the more time you spend around them, and the more that others perceive that you are a high quality person as well, because you're spending time with those awesome people, that's going to really, really help your success.
- 2:55SPEAKER_00: Again, I'm not here to tell you what's fair or what we think should be equitable.
- 3:00SPEAKER_00: I'm here to tell you this is how the world actually works.
- 3:03SPEAKER_00: I'm just here to remind you that bad company corrupts good character.
- 3:06SPEAKER_00: And I would say here's a syllogism, which is good company lifts up good character to an even higher place.
- 3:13SPEAKER_00: That's somehow not as catchy as I thought it might be, but yet I still think it's true.
- 3:18SPEAKER_00: So take a good look at the people that you spend the most time with.
- 3:21SPEAKER_00: Are they helping to improve your reputation and your social standing?
- 3:24SPEAKER_00: And are they making you into a better individual?
- 3:26SPEAKER_00: If so, then that's awesome.
- 3:28SPEAKER_00: If you're spending time with other people, however, who are not doing that for you, then take a look at that and maybe distance yourself from those people and find some ways to spend less time around them.
- 3:37SPEAKER_00: It really, really does make a huge difference who you spend the most time with in life.
- 3:40SPEAKER_00: As they say, you are the average of the five people that you spend the most time with.
- 3:44SPEAKER_00: And I think that is absolutely, positively 100% true.
- 3:48SPEAKER_00: Thanks so much for listening to today's episode.
