Transcript
- 0:47It's a moment before the door opens when your hand hovers over
- 0:50the handle and the
- 0:52SPEAKER_00: air feels charged.
- 0:54SPEAKER_00: You can hear your own breath.
- 0:56You can feel the weight of what's on the other side,
- 0:59even if you can't name it yet.
- 1:01SPEAKER_00: That's the space I want to explore with you.
- 1:04SPEAKER_00: Welcome to Romancing the Threshold,
- 1:07SPEAKER_00: the podcast where we don't rush through change,
- 1:11SPEAKER_00: but romance it,
- 1:12SPEAKER_00: where we linger in the in-between,
- 1:14SPEAKER_00: court the unknown,
- 1:16SPEAKER_00: and discover the soulfulness hidden in every crossing.
- 1:20SPEAKER_00: To romance the threshold is to approach the liminal space with its unique
- 1:26SPEAKER_00: geography,
- 1:27SPEAKER_00: those moments of transition,
- 1:30SPEAKER_00: uncertainty,
- 1:31SPEAKER_00: and of becoming.
- 1:33Not with fear or urgency,
- 1:36but with tenderness,
- 1:38imagination,
- 1:40curiosity,
- 1:41and a little devotion.
- 1:43SPEAKER_00: It's about the art of wooing the unknown.
- 1:47SPEAKER_00: Because as we know,
- 1:49SPEAKER_00: change is rarely easy,
- 1:51SPEAKER_00: but it doesn't need to be stripped of delight or of joy.
- 1:56SPEAKER_00: We can learn to embrace the unknown through wooing,
- 2:01SPEAKER_00: through courtship,
- 2:02SPEAKER_00: and open ourselves to the creative possibilities in the transition.
- 2:08SPEAKER_00: One of the stories,
- 2:09SPEAKER_00: one of the types of stories that remind us of this is romance stories,
- 2:13SPEAKER_00: love stories,
- 2:15SPEAKER_00: the fairy tales,
- 2:16SPEAKER_00: the myths.
- 2:18SPEAKER_00: They show us how to hold desire without rushing to the resolution.
- 2:23SPEAKER_00: It's about lingering in the uncertainty and trusting in the unfolding.
- 2:29SPEAKER_00: It's a slow burn of romance.
- 2:32SPEAKER_00: It's moving from enemies to lovers.
- 2:35SPEAKER_00: It's about second chances.
- 2:37SPEAKER_00: These stories teach us that every threshold can be a love story.
- 2:43SPEAKER_00: So I invite you to call on the romantic self,
- 2:47call on the part of you that wants to show up to change with
- 2:51curiosity as if you're
- 2:53SPEAKER_00: falling in love for the first time.
- 3:00Now,
- 3:00in this podcast,
- 3:02I hope to invite you to four things as we go through the
- 3:06episodes.
- 3:07And these are part of the four tenets of this podcast and the
- 3:13inspiration behind it.
- 3:15SPEAKER_00: The number one is softness in transition.
- 3:19It's about letting ourselves be held by the moment instead of
- 3:24grin and bearing it,
- 3:25SPEAKER_00: instead of bracing against it,
- 3:28SPEAKER_00: tensing up.
- 3:29It's about relaxing,
- 3:32taking that deep breath that allows us to be more present in
- 3:37the moment.
- 3:38SPEAKER_00: It changes everything.
- 3:40It's that softness that we see in love stories when everything
- 3:46is geared up to that
- 3:48moment of declaration and we take a deep breath and soften
- 3:53ourselves into that
- 3:55SPEAKER_00: moment.
- 3:55SPEAKER_00: Number two, it's the idea of pleasure in uncertainty.
- 4:01SPEAKER_00: It's about finding beauty with curiosity in the not knowing.
- 4:07SPEAKER_00: We have to learn to look for beauty in things,
- 4:11SPEAKER_00: to be tickled fancy,
- 4:13SPEAKER_00: to find the whimsy,
- 4:15SPEAKER_00: to find the joy or the pleasure in
- 4:18SPEAKER_00: even when we have no idea what's going to happen.
- 4:22SPEAKER_00: Yes, easier said than done.
- 4:24SPEAKER_00: But I think when we do try to do this, it helps immensely.
- 4:29SPEAKER_00: It helps immensely us to move through transitions with more ease.
- 4:34SPEAKER_00: It doesn't delete the anxieties.
- 4:38SPEAKER_00: It doesn't answer all the questions,
- 4:41SPEAKER_00: but it allows us to be more at ease and thus being more open to
- 4:49out of the left field answers to the questions we are carrying
- 4:53through the transition.
- 4:54SPEAKER_00: Number three is the idea of intimacy with the shadow.
- 4:59This is the space for us to make for the parts of ourselves
- 5:04that we have been
- 5:05SPEAKER_00: taught to hide,
- 5:06SPEAKER_00: that we have been embarrassed,
- 5:08SPEAKER_00: ashamed,
- 5:09SPEAKER_00: that we never want to touch it.
- 5:11All the parts of us that we put it in the box down in the
- 5:15basement and we forgot to look for it.
- 5:19SPEAKER_00: But these parts don't go away.
- 5:20SPEAKER_00: They continue to demand our attention directly or indirectly.
- 5:26SPEAKER_00: And the idea of intimacy with the shadow,
- 5:29I find it one of the places that we can really look at it is
- 5:34through romance
- 5:35SPEAKER_00: stories,
- 5:36especially the fairy tales or the monster romance stories where
- 5:43the other is often
- 5:46SPEAKER_00: portrayed as a real monster.
- 5:48SPEAKER_00: And through the transformation,
- 5:50SPEAKER_00: actually,
- 5:51SPEAKER_00: sorry,
- 5:51SPEAKER_00: through love,
- 5:53SPEAKER_00: it is transformed and then acknowledged.
- 5:57So this is an important part in exploring the threshold because
- 6:01at the threshold is
- 6:02SPEAKER_00: where we meet a lot of our shadow work,
- 6:05SPEAKER_00: the parts of us that are demanding acknowledgement and
- 6:10SPEAKER_00: It's the return of the repressed,
- 6:12SPEAKER_00: the return of the parts of ourselves that we were taught to hide.
- 6:17SPEAKER_00: And so when they come back, they are really, really oftentimes upset.
- 6:23And we have to approach them with a bit more tenderness before
- 6:28we can really relate to them.
- 6:31SPEAKER_00: So I think this is an important part.
- 6:33SPEAKER_00: How do we cultivate intimacy with the shadow?
- 6:37And this is a theme that I want to explore further because in a
- 6:42lot of mythology,
- 6:43SPEAKER_00: in a lot of fairy tales,
- 6:45SPEAKER_00: and now with the monster romances,
- 6:48SPEAKER_00: with the fantasy books or the romantic books,
- 6:51there's a lot of this exploration of the shadow through the
- 6:56other being so
- 6:57SPEAKER_00: different,
- 6:57SPEAKER_00: being so monstrous.
- 6:59And I think this is a very relevant topic for us in the moment
- 7:04that we're living
- 7:04SPEAKER_00: currently in our culture.
- 7:07SPEAKER_00: Number four is approaching cycles with a mythic awareness.
- 7:14So this is about remembering that every ending is also the
- 7:18beginning,
- 7:19but it's in disguise.
- 7:21SPEAKER_00: What I've noticed in working with astrology and psychology,
- 7:26SPEAKER_00: studying history,
- 7:27SPEAKER_00: is that change has a certain geography.
- 7:32SPEAKER_00: There are certain points that they may not be the same, but they rhyme.
- 7:38SPEAKER_00: Joseph Campbell talked about this with The Hero's Journey,
- 7:41SPEAKER_00: where he outlined kind of the key points of a story.
- 7:45SPEAKER_00: And I think when we approach cycles in life of change,
- 7:49SPEAKER_00: of beginning,
- 7:50SPEAKER_00: middle,
- 7:50SPEAKER_00: and end,
- 7:51SPEAKER_00: and we can understand that there's an archetypal
- 7:57SPEAKER_00: unfolding, we can better prepare ourselves for change.
- 8:01SPEAKER_00: It doesn't mean that everything is going to be the same.
- 8:05SPEAKER_00: As I said, they rhyme.
- 8:06SPEAKER_00: They're not the same.
- 8:08But it allows us to be more open to what might be unfolding
- 8:12rather than bracing
- 8:14SPEAKER_00: ourselves,
- 8:16SPEAKER_00: being so tense when we're going through change.
- 8:19SPEAKER_00: I think this also helps us understand better what is the unfolding of the
- 8:25SPEAKER_00: collective change that we are going through.
- 8:27SPEAKER_00: So to understand cycles,
- 8:30SPEAKER_00: The archetypal parts of the cycle really help us to navigate change.
- 8:36SPEAKER_00: This is what I like to call the landscape of the liminal, right?
- 8:40SPEAKER_00: There's a geography to it.
- 8:42SPEAKER_00: And we go through these parts.
- 8:45SPEAKER_00: And the invitation here is for you to notice this in your own life.
- 8:50SPEAKER_00: What does it look like for you?
- 8:51SPEAKER_00: What are the images that come up for you?
- 8:54SPEAKER_00: So these are not just ideas.
- 8:56SPEAKER_00: These are sort of practices that I'm inviting you to do.
- 8:59I'm including myself in it because as humans,
- 9:03we both love change,
- 9:05but we also resist it.
- 9:07And so these are practices that I hope that together we can
- 9:13implement in our lives,
- 9:14SPEAKER_00: bring into our lives.
- 9:17And this might help not just ourselves,
- 9:19but even those close to us navigate change.
- 9:24SPEAKER_00: As I've said before, change is inevitable.
- 9:27SPEAKER_00: Often change is considered stressful.
- 9:30SPEAKER_00: It brings up a lot of anxieties and uncertainty.
- 9:34But I believe that we can approach change and move through it
- 9:38with more curiosity,
- 9:40SPEAKER_00: love,
- 9:41SPEAKER_00: creativity.
- 9:43SPEAKER_00: Now, the other part of this podcast, Romancing the Threshold, is that
- 9:50SPEAKER_00: I see this podcast as the hearth, the center of the work I'm creating.
- 9:57SPEAKER_00: So I have two sub-stack publications.
- 10:00One is called On Liminality and the other one is The Healing
- 10:04Power of Fluff.
- 10:04SPEAKER_00: This is the more recent publication.
- 10:08The onliminality is where I explore the thresholds of life
- 10:13through change,
- 10:15SPEAKER_00: grief,
- 10:16SPEAKER_00: longing,
- 10:17SPEAKER_00: becoming.
- 10:18SPEAKER_00: And I'm doing that through the mythic and astrological lens.
- 10:23SPEAKER_00: That's where I talk more about astrology,
- 10:25SPEAKER_00: not for the day-to-day astrology,
- 10:28SPEAKER_00: but the astrology of life.
- 10:30The archetypal part of astrology that helps us understand
- 10:33change in our lives,
- 10:35SPEAKER_00: phases,
- 10:36SPEAKER_00: and how can we best relate to the planetary archetypes.
- 10:41SPEAKER_00: Now,
- 10:42SPEAKER_00: The Healing Power of Fluff,
- 10:44SPEAKER_00: a more recent publication,
- 10:46SPEAKER_00: is where I'm focusing my writing on the emotional truth and elements,
- 10:54SPEAKER_00: tropes and themes of romance books,
- 10:57SPEAKER_00: of stories.
- 10:59SPEAKER_00: Of course,
- 10:59SPEAKER_00: weaving psychology,
- 11:01SPEAKER_00: bringing in some of the astrology,
- 11:03SPEAKER_00: but looking at stories as a way to guide us through change.
- 11:11SPEAKER_00: With joy, play and curiosity.
- 11:15SPEAKER_00: The healing power of fluff has actually a longer,
- 11:19SPEAKER_00: much more sort of many years ago story,
- 11:21which is it was the title of my master's in counseling
- 11:25psychology thesis when I
- 11:28SPEAKER_00: wrote my thesis back in grad school.
- 11:31SPEAKER_00: I was exploring,
- 11:33SPEAKER_00: walking through cinema therapy,
- 11:36SPEAKER_00: exploring romantic comedies and dreams,
- 11:40working with movies as if you were working with dreams to
- 11:44explore the inner journey
- 11:46SPEAKER_00: that a heroine does or goes through in search for romantic love.
- 11:53SPEAKER_00: And so that was the thesis,
- 11:54SPEAKER_00: the healing power of fluff,
- 11:56SPEAKER_00: because for me,
- 11:57SPEAKER_00: while fluff is dismissed as,
- 11:59SPEAKER_00: well,
- 12:00SPEAKER_00: fluff,
- 12:01SPEAKER_00: it is actually,
- 12:02SPEAKER_00: it actually has a lot of depth,
- 12:04SPEAKER_00: right?
- 12:05SPEAKER_00: So in the healing power of fluff,
- 12:07SPEAKER_00: I want to look at things that we may consider as guilty pleasures,
- 12:12SPEAKER_00: just fluff.
- 12:13They're inconsequential,
- 12:16kind of like romance books have this strange place in our
- 12:20culture.
- 12:21SPEAKER_00: They're both loved, but also disrespected.
- 12:24But underneath that fluff,
- 12:27there's actually a lot of depth when we explore them with
- 12:31curiosity.
- 12:33SPEAKER_00: So that's the kind of the two places where I'm creating and I'm writing.
- 12:39SPEAKER_00: And the podcast,
- 12:40SPEAKER_00: Romancing the Threshold,
- 12:41really is the hearth where I'm trying to bridge these two parts
- 12:46of myself.
- 12:48SPEAKER_00: The onliminality is my astrologer, my sort of more professional side.
- 12:53SPEAKER_00: Healing Power Fluff is a place for my romantic self.
- 12:58SPEAKER_00: And here they come together.
- 12:59SPEAKER_00: And this podcast in and of itself is a romance in the making.
- 13:06SPEAKER_00: I've got the inspiration.
- 13:08SPEAKER_00: I've got sort of an idea, kind of like falling in love.
- 13:12SPEAKER_00: It's in the beginning.
- 13:13SPEAKER_00: It's the early stages of this love affair.
- 13:15SPEAKER_00: So I don't have a full plan yet.
- 13:17SPEAKER_00: I don't know how this podcast will go.
- 13:20I don't know if it's a happy ever after or if it's a happy for
- 13:25now type of situation.
- 13:27SPEAKER_00: But the point is that together,
- 13:30SPEAKER_00: I'm inviting you to join me on this journey,
- 13:34SPEAKER_00: is that like any good love story,
- 13:37SPEAKER_00: this podcast will unfold on its own time.
- 13:41It's going to have its own surprises,
- 13:43its unexpected swerves,
- 13:45its plot twists.
- 13:47SPEAKER_00: And I hope you are here with me on this exploration.
- 13:51SPEAKER_00: Now,
- 13:52The idea that I do have for the podcast and that I want to try
- 13:56out in the coming
- 13:57SPEAKER_00: weeks is that I will have solo episodes like this one.
- 14:02SPEAKER_00: I want to have Q&As.
- 14:04SPEAKER_00: So this is where your help is going to be really needed,
- 14:08where you can send me your questions and we can kind of compile
- 14:12them together and
- 14:13SPEAKER_00: create Q&A episodes.
- 14:15SPEAKER_00: I also want to have interviews with other astrologers,
- 14:19SPEAKER_00: authors,
- 14:20other types of healers on the topic of how can we better go
- 14:26through transitions?
- 14:27SPEAKER_00: How do we navigate change?
- 14:29SPEAKER_00: How do we embrace and romance life in that moment?
- 14:34SPEAKER_00: I also want to talk about books,
- 14:36SPEAKER_00: of course,
- 14:37SPEAKER_00: and archetypes and really the deep magic that we can find in liminality.
- 14:44SPEAKER_00: Now,
- 14:44SPEAKER_00: actually,
- 14:44SPEAKER_00: the next episode will be an interview with my friend and mentor,
- 14:51SPEAKER_00: astrologer Brian Clark.
- 14:52SPEAKER_00: And in that conversation, we are exploring the theme of the threshold.
- 14:57SPEAKER_00: What does it mean?
- 14:58SPEAKER_00: What does it look like?
- 14:59SPEAKER_00: And the power of myth.
- 15:02SPEAKER_00: in navigating threshold experiences in life.
- 15:06SPEAKER_00: So this is the gist of the podcast.
- 15:08SPEAKER_00: This is just an intro for it.
- 15:10SPEAKER_00: And I invite you to join in, really think about it.
- 15:15SPEAKER_00: Think about this moment in your life.
- 15:16SPEAKER_00: What kind of threshold are you about to cross or maybe you're crossing?
- 15:21SPEAKER_00: And together, let's woo the unknown.
- 15:25SPEAKER_00: Let's romance it rather than grin and bear it.
- 15:30So before we go,
- 15:31before we sign off,
- 15:32I invite you to do a little practice.
- 15:35You know,
- 15:36something that you can walk away and bring it into your own
- 15:40life.
- 15:41SPEAKER_00: So this week, I invite you to think about
- 15:45SPEAKER_00: a part of your life that you're sort of hovering at that doorway.
- 15:52You're the one standing at that doorway about to turn the
- 15:56handle down and open it.
- 15:58And this pause on the threshold,
- 16:02maybe it's about a decision that you haven't made yet.
- 16:05SPEAKER_00: Maybe it's about a conversation that you've been avoiding.
- 16:10Or maybe it's about a dream that you're not quite yet ready to
- 16:14name it out loud.
- 16:16So instead of rushing through it,
- 16:18I invite you to linger a little bit more at that pause.
- 16:23And I want you to ask yourself,
- 16:26what would it feel like to romance this moment?
- 16:31SPEAKER_00: If this moment in your life was a love story,
- 16:35SPEAKER_00: the beginning of a love story,
- 16:37SPEAKER_00: how would you go about it?
- 16:39SPEAKER_00: How would you romance it?
- 16:40SPEAKER_00: And if you want to take this further,
- 16:43SPEAKER_00: Maybe to help you move through it,
- 16:46SPEAKER_00: I invite you to light a candle,
- 16:47SPEAKER_00: write down on your journal,
- 16:50SPEAKER_00: what are you afraid of?
- 16:52SPEAKER_00: Or perhaps, what are you secretly hoping for?
- 16:56SPEAKER_00: Or if you prefer to be more active, I invite you to go outside.
- 17:01SPEAKER_00: If you can,
- 17:01SPEAKER_00: go into nature and go with this question in your mind,
- 17:06SPEAKER_00: what would it feel like to romance this moment?
- 17:10SPEAKER_00: and see what nature responds back to you.
- 17:14SPEAKER_00: So that's the exercise.
- 17:16Or maybe if you want to keep it really,
- 17:18really simple,
- 17:19then just try taking a few deep breaths.
- 17:23SPEAKER_00: and see what rises.
- 17:24SPEAKER_00: Where does it feel in your body?
- 17:26This tension,
- 17:28perhaps the anxiety,
- 17:31maybe the excitement about this threshold.
- 17:33SPEAKER_00: What does it feel in your body?
- 17:35SPEAKER_00: And maybe by paying attention to where it is,
- 17:38SPEAKER_00: an image or a sound,
- 17:42or maybe even a song lyric might come up for you that could
- 17:46help you move through
- 17:48SPEAKER_00: this threshold.
- 17:49SPEAKER_00: That's my invitation to you.
- 17:51SPEAKER_00: And if you really want to share it,
- 17:54SPEAKER_00: how you went about with the exercise,
- 17:56SPEAKER_00: and if you had any insights,
- 17:58SPEAKER_00: I invite you to leave it in the comments.
- 18:01SPEAKER_00: Leave your answer in the comments.
- 18:03Well,
- 18:03this is just the first episode,
- 18:06our first date at Romancing the Threshold.
- 18:10SPEAKER_00: So this is what it is.
- 18:11SPEAKER_00: Romancing the Threshold is here for,
- 18:14SPEAKER_00: to help us court change with imagination,
- 18:19SPEAKER_00: curiosity,
- 18:20SPEAKER_00: and soul.
- 18:21SPEAKER_00: It's to remind us that every crossing is an invitation.
- 18:26And if you enjoyed this episode,
- 18:28I hope you stay with me on this journey.
- 18:30I love it for you to subscribe to either my Healing Power Fluff
- 18:34or the Unliminality Substack.
- 18:38If you also have a friend that you think would enjoy this type
- 18:41of podcast,
- 18:42SPEAKER_00: please share it with them.
- 18:44And of course,
- 18:45send me your comments and your questions for the future Q&A
- 18:48episodes.
- 18:50SPEAKER_00: Until next time,
- 18:52SPEAKER_00: go gently,
- 18:53go boldly into the in-between with curiosity for what awaits at
- 18:59the threshold.
