- 0:18I'm Jessica and this is Deborah. Kerr Rambles were a couple of
- 0:20friends review Korean dramas and I'm excited because I have for
- 0:24my guest today, I have gray. Strung, how are you Grace?
- 0:28How you doing? Very good.
- 0:30Thank you for having me. Yeah, absolutely.
- 0:32So Grace. You are a comedian.
- 0:35You're a writer. And you also have your own
- 0:37kdrama podcast called kdrama school.
- 0:39Which I love, I usually go there for a different opinion because
- 0:44you have such a different view on things and I like remember
- 0:47distinctly listening to your the glory episode and thinking wow,
- 0:51I didn't think about any of this.
- 0:52So this is wildly different and it made me rethink the drama a
- 0:56little bit. So for those who, Who don't know
- 1:00you and don't know how you got started in kdrama really quick.
- 1:04How did you get into kdramas and do you care to see how long?
- 1:08Cause I know it's been a long time but you get to say like
- 1:11what was your first kdrama or Sure.
- 1:17Yeah. I mean, the question of how a
- 1:19person gets into kdramas. I think is usually for
- 1:22non-koreans, because for me, it's like, there's no such thing
- 1:26as a kdrama for me. There's just tv.you because I
- 1:29was born and raised in Korea. So how did I get into Korean TV
- 1:35is just I would turn on the TV if that makes sense.
- 1:39Right. Because that's just that was the
- 1:41media that I was exposed to. From the moment that I saw a
- 1:47screen, so that is how I got into it.
- 1:52I suppose, I mean my first exposure to Korean television
- 1:57that I have in my memory is like childhood programs like there
- 2:01was a variety show, like it's like similar to like PBS's, you
- 2:07know, Sesame Street or something, it's called Bull and
- 2:11that used to be on in the early 90s.
- 2:13So my parents would just leave that on.
- 2:14And I would watch that as a kid. So, yeah.
- 2:18For me, it's there's no like, intro to kdramas or the Korean
- 2:23world. It's just I'm Korean, you know?
- 2:25So that's the media that I grew up consuming.
- 2:29Yeah. This is wildly different from
- 2:31pretty much every guess that I've had on the show even if
- 2:34they come from Asian descent, they're like, I got into kdramas
- 2:38at this age. I grew up here and even though,
- 2:41you know, I was exposed to it, I didn't get into it until this.
- 2:44This time in my life and this was my first kdrama and so on
- 2:47and so forth. So I really like that you, it's
- 2:49just part of your DNA. It's just how you grew up.
- 2:52I have a similar experience with the whale has because I grew up
- 2:55watching, Hispanic novellas on TV and they were you know, wild
- 3:01and they have their own tropes and they have their own like
- 3:03actors. And you see often and it's again
- 3:06like a very comprable to kdramas, it is.
- 3:10It is very comparable. Absolutely.
- 3:13So some housekeeping before we get Started.

- 3:49Love you guys. And without further Ado, we're
- 3:52going to get started on a review of go back, couple and I'll get
- 3:56started by reading the Asian Wiki.
- 3:57Synopsis it reads Trayvon though and Mountain Dew are both 38
- 4:01years old and married couple try bundle has been burdened with
- 4:05being the breadwinner and Majin do is a housewife with low
- 4:08self-esteem. Even though they loved each
- 4:10other when they married, they now hate each other.
- 4:12They both regret marrying at such a young age.
- 4:14Each the couple travel through time and find themselves as 20
- 4:18year old University students when they met for the first
- 4:21time. So this aired originally from
- 4:23October to November 2017, it's only 12 episodes long.
- 4:28It was directed by Xavier Moon and he's directed 18 Again from
- 4:332020, which is probably a very good comparable for the show and
- 4:37he recently, I guess later this year, he'll come out with you
- 4:41did will die soon which star is Puck Saddam and sewing good.
- 4:44Look, it was written by a coin, hey Jew, and she's written High
- 4:49by Mama, which is also a comparable to the show and the
- 4:53sound of your heart from 2016 to 2017 which starred econ zoo and
- 4:59Dunkleman. So the cast, I hope you can help
- 5:04me out. Like, just let me know where
- 5:06you've seen these two before, because I have like, where I've
- 5:10seen them, but this is like the first time that I've really kind
- 5:13of sunk my teeth into. Something that they've done, it
- 5:15feels like so the show Stars. Done that up as Majin do and
- 5:20she's been in like sell your haunted house.
- 5:23Oh my baby VIP, the last Empress one more, happy ending, fated to
- 5:27love you which is like the big one.
- 5:28I think everyone knows her from where.
- 5:30Have you seen something that before?
- 5:35Yeah, I mean where have I seen checking that that questions
- 5:38also similar to like, how did you get into kdramas and that
- 5:43she was just part of the world, China is known, mostly in
- 5:48originally, as a KPop star, she was a soloist and she was hugely
- 5:53successful when she first began. I think she was starting in like
- 5:59the year 2000 and she came out with this hit song.
- 6:04Song at the time. I think it's like sweet dream or
- 6:08sweet something but it's like this really like cutesy bubbly
- 6:13poppy song. I remember the music video with
- 6:17her wearing like pajamas and like like a shower cap.
- 6:21I think we should like, I don't know, like pigtails or it was
- 6:24just very like very, you know, sweet sugary girly.
- 6:29Innocent like that was her image.
- 6:31And that's how she was branded and packaged.
- 6:33But Chang, that up was so busy. I remember her it was like, I
- 6:39think 2000 or 2001, but she came out with like two, dramas that
- 6:45one year. She had a she had two solo likes
- 6:50two singles that were out and she was like extremely busy in
- 6:54addition to that. She was also, you know, guest
- 6:56starring in a bunch of, you know, comedy variety shows.
- 7:00I mean, her schedule was insane. Oh, She was also booking, a lot
- 7:05of commercials right TV commercials and Curry, they call
- 7:09it a CF. And so she was in a bunch of
- 7:11commercials like like like big ones, like like beer commercials
- 7:15this and that, and she was raking in a lot of money and she
- 7:18was super busy. But she was also and she talked
- 7:22about this much later, but she was also having like mental
- 7:25breakdowns because she, they would not let her sleep.
- 7:28Her managers and her agents, like none of them were let it
- 7:32let her sleep. Like she was a Workhorse and You
- 7:34was completely exploited as this 19. 20 year-old young woman,
- 7:40just starting out in the business.
- 7:42Because, I mean, when you look at her now Chung that is like
- 7:44she's like in her 40s now, but she has these big eyes.
- 7:49She has this like really petite face like round cheeks.
- 7:53And she so youthful looking and cute and adorable.
- 7:56It's like a very unique. Look, so like the Korean media
- 8:00could not get enough of her. I mean, they really worked.
- 8:04Her up. And so she talked about this on
- 8:07a variety show, that's no longer on air, but it's called happy
- 8:10together. It was on air from like 2000.
- 8:13I think, like, 2001 or 1999 it was on, it was on for like,
- 8:17almost 20 years. And she was a guest on that show
- 8:21talking about how her managers would just like, not let her
- 8:25sleep for five days straight. This is because she had to work.
- 8:28Yeah, and so she would just like have these fits and throw things
- 8:33out of her. Van and she would have no memory
- 8:35of it of any of that behavior, because she's sleep deprivation,
- 8:38right state of mind. Yeah, extreme sleep deprivation
- 8:41exhaustion depression anxiety to this day tongue.
- 8:45That us suffers from like panic disorders and anxiety disorders
- 8:49that stem from the work that she's done.
- 8:53So when I think of 10 data, I think of a, she is immensely
- 8:58talented. I mean she is like as a singer
- 9:02as an actress as a A performer. She is super professional.
- 9:07She Nails it every time, every time I see her on a show, I'm
- 9:11just like Blown Away by her performance.
- 9:13She's very good, and she's very versatile.
- 9:15And she has excellent comedic timing and she has excellent
- 9:18dramatic performance. It's difficult to do those two
- 9:21things in equal measure, but she's somebody who can.
- 9:24And at the same time, it's like given her talents, you know,
- 9:30it's like the industry. I mean, she's definitely a
- 9:33victim of the Street and how inhumane and cruel?
- 9:36It can be. And so for me, it's like, okay,
- 9:39on the one hand, she's very talented.
- 9:41And she has this very impressive like repertoire when it comes to
- 9:45her filmography and her solo albums, and her career, not just
- 9:49in Korea, but also in Japan and China, she's huge.
- 9:53I mean, that's mostly written that.
- 9:54I made her money. She makes it in China where they
- 9:56love her so she's done also Chinese films.
- 9:59All right, so she's like this, Mega how you International Star
- 10:03but she's also a Cautionary tale.
- 10:04When it comes to self care, and boundaries and self-protection.
- 10:10And voicing yourself when it comes to your needs, like
- 10:15resting, like eating like saying no.
- 10:18All right, so, so for me, it's like I have a very complicated
- 10:22emotional response when it comes to China data, but for someone
- 10:27would June, he is like one of the funniest contemporary
- 10:31kdrama. Actors right now, I would say
- 10:33he's not a comedian. And he doesn't come from a
- 10:35comedy background. I think he's unique in the, he
- 10:37doesn't even come from like, a singing background.
- 10:38I don't think he's a KPop star, right?
- 10:40Like, he's not a threat, like, a lot of these know, he's just an
- 10:44actor, but he's such a great performer in every show that
- 10:48I've seen him in. He's just so funny, but at the
- 10:52same time he's also somebody who can like handle the weight of a
- 10:56dramatic performance, although probably not as not as seasoned
- 11:01as tongue that up. I think tongue that is better
- 11:03with their dramatic roles. But someone would June is very,
- 11:05very funny and this writer, she's written a sitcom, I mean
- 11:10she's written sitcoms like writing like sound of your
- 11:13heart. That's a sitcom.
- 11:15And because of the writers, Affinity with comedy, I think
- 11:19that is why she cast these two actors tongue that insulin hojun
- 11:23because they're both so good with comedy.
- 11:26Yeah. So like you said something to
- 11:29doin plays to bundle and like, I hadn't basically never seen him
- 11:33because I only watched him in reply 1994 and hadn't seen much
- 11:39of his other work. So this was my first basically
- 11:42experience watching him in a cage drama and I was like he's
- 11:46very good because, you know, you come in with like this notion of
- 11:50this character, because he's not very likable at all.
- 11:53And you leave in your like, oh maybe I was like dead wrong
- 11:58about the whole situation and that's really tough for.
- 12:01I think an actor to do when you're rooting for.
- 12:04Somebody else you rooting for another character and he's out
- 12:07here, kind of changing your mind.
- 12:10So I really liked both of them. I love tongue that and I wish
- 12:15it. I saw her more stuff.
- 12:17The last time I saw her was in the last Empress, which was, I
- 12:20had no idea, was a crazy wide had no idea was a mock tongue
- 12:24drama. Yeah, it's a.
- 12:25It's like it's like the Pinnacle of mcjunkin woman.
- 12:28The woman who wrote it has written many, many mugs.
- 12:31And she's very famous for writing about Jung.
- 12:33So yeah, that's I had such a crazy one.
- 12:35I didn't know who was behind the lens.
- 12:37I didn't know who wrote it. I just started it, like, on a
- 12:40whim and most complete as a crazy.
- 12:42Why I didn't even, I couldn't even finish.
- 12:44It was very long, that's a fief, it's very stressful, it's
- 12:47stressful stressed, you're right.
- 12:49Yeah, so that's my experience with the the two leads and we do
- 12:54have a giant ensemble cast year and we can get into the maybe
- 12:57later. But what did you think?
- 13:00I think it's been a while since you've watched the show, but
- 13:02what are your three General? Thoughts on go back couple.
- 13:09I mean, I I was mostly watching it because I grew up as a fan of
- 13:14tongue that, uh, so that was the draw from me.
- 13:16So when would you in was just like an added bonus.
- 13:18I had seen someone who June in the light in your eyes as well,
- 13:22which is very small drama with Kim Hedges.
- 13:27Which, you know, who's like a veteran actress and I had also
- 13:33seen him with what's her face with some Geo in.
- 13:38Another drama I think. It's like, was it love or
- 13:40something where he plays like this, you know, like it's like
- 13:45oh is he the father of my baby like that kind of thing, right?
- 13:48But he's in he's done work. But yeah.
- 13:52You're right. Like reply 1994 is the Big
- 13:54Splash for him but yeah I mean the other draw for me also lets
- 14:01usually the Stars, the stars are usually the draw for most
- 14:04kdramas I mean for any film or TV Evie.
- 14:08It's like, you go and watch it because you want to go and see
- 14:11like, Charlize, Theron you want to go and see Hugh Jackman,
- 14:13right? So you're going to see these
- 14:14movies so it's like the same for any any media but also what's
- 14:22his face? That tall, sexy guy, danke
- 14:25young? Yeah thank you.
- 14:27So chunky. Oh was another draw for me?
- 14:29Because I had only seen him like Once prior in an earlier show
- 14:37that came out like, um, like in 2014, I think it's called,
- 14:42that's okay, it's love. Yes.
- 14:44And he played a very small cameo role in that show, and that's a
- 14:49show I've watched many times, and I was like, who is this
- 14:53tall? Sexy, dude, like, what's his
- 14:56deal? And I think that was sort of
- 14:58that Cameo appearance was like his like foray into Korean toy
- 15:02because he's a method actor. Right?
- 15:05You comes as a model so he's not like a trained actor.
- 15:07He's just a pretty face on this show.
- 15:11He was also just playing this model pretty face, but I was
- 15:15like, oh, he has my attention like he's pretty cute.
- 15:18Do I think he's a good of an actor?
- 15:21No, he's not. And I could see, I could see
- 15:25that like there's potential there like, oh like I could see
- 15:28that this this is a star in the making kind of thing so he was
- 15:31also a big draw for me. And You're right.
- 15:34Like, you know so one which is character is a dick.
- 15:38He's so like selfish and he's so, you know, just yeah, like a
- 15:46selfish, dude. But so is.
- 15:49So is tongue that has character? I mean, Ginger was also a
- 15:52selfish character, like, they are both flawed characters, but
- 15:56the reason why I think you, and I feel more for children because
- 15:59we're women. Yeah.
- 16:00Like, that's why and this is a show that was also written by a
- 16:03woman and It's dealing with a lot of women's issues.
- 16:07So that's why, you know, we feel a little bit more connected to
- 16:11change of character than Panda, but I was definitely rooting for
- 16:16chinju to get with chunky. Oh, oh my God.
- 16:19Whole time the whole time. I was like no, leave punto.
- 16:23Go with the tall sexy Rich. Dude, make a better life for
- 16:27yourself. You have you get it second
- 16:29chance to start over? No no no no no stop repeating
- 16:32the same mistakes. Right.
- 16:34So for me, it was like if there's a message here, it's not
- 16:38that you should go do the same shit over again.
- 16:41It's like know, when you get a renewal, when you get a second
- 16:45opportunity in life, do the crazier Choice, make the crazier
- 16:50decision, right? Go.
- 16:52And yes, you deserve that really tall drink of iced tea.
- 16:56Go get him. You know right.
- 16:58Leave behind chip on door. Yeah I think that was my what
- 17:03those are. My questions.
- 17:04I was going to ask you whose side were you on in the
- 17:06relationship? And yes.
- 17:09Absolutely. I was on a cutting that aside
- 17:12because like genocide because we're women, but also her story
- 17:17was way better explained and told, and you just feel so
- 17:23empathetic and sympathetic toward her plate.
- 17:26Her kind of doing the bulk of the raising of their child and,
- 17:32you know, to then do is like, not.
- 17:33Present at all. And yeah, he's hustling out here
- 17:37trying to make money and put food on the table.
- 17:39But like, that's a very patriarchal like responsibility
- 17:44that he's put on himself and, you know, her character not to
- 17:50get too much into spoilers but her character it places so much
- 17:53emphasis on him being present on him, just supporting her by her
- 17:58by him just showing up right. Like bare minimum just be there
- 18:02and He's like surprised he's he has like a revelatory experience
- 18:08toward the later half of the show where he's like, oh yeah,
- 18:11like I was never there. And it's like that's like bare
- 18:16minimum. Just be there and that was very
- 18:20frustrating. It's very like, yes, finally you
- 18:22got there homey but like it's very frustrating to watch when
- 18:26you're rooting for, you know, Majin do like her character and
- 18:32I wasn't like on his side so that like that answers, that
- 18:34question. The second question, would you
- 18:36also like sort of answered was, who did you want her to end up
- 18:39with and why? And like, absolutely, I agree.
- 18:42With you that you want her to end up with the second male
- 18:45lead. Because not only is he like a
- 18:47better a safe bet on in the past, he's a safe bet in the
- 18:51future. She knows how his life turns
- 18:53out. It's a great life.
- 18:55He's like a billionaire or something like that, he's
- 18:57extremely successful, still single in the present day or
- 19:01whatever. And you know, why would she not
- 19:05try something different when she knows how the relationship could
- 19:10turn out. Like, she knows the worst side.
- 19:13Of turbine do and she still chooses to sort of go with that.
- 19:20So it is quite a journey that they go on and it's only 12
- 19:24episodes. But did you have any thoughts on
- 19:29the OSD? I thought it was just like a
- 19:31little bit like one song stood out and that was it.
- 19:34But I don't know if you if you have to listen to the OST since
- 19:38watching. Go ahead.
- 19:41Go back couple. Yeah, I mean I haven't seen the
- 19:45show from beginning to end like since it came out like six years
- 19:51ago, but I did watch like the first couple of episodes just to
- 19:56refreshen. And what I noticed is that when
- 19:58they do go back, like they're listening to these early Kpop
- 20:04songs that came out in the late 90s.
- 20:07And so I remember recognizing that, right?
- 20:09Like, oh yeah, like you know, so that's its.
- 20:12So it's kind of Of like an intertext Force 10 June and that
- 20:17you know, in reply 1994. There's the same thing like
- 20:20they're playing these 90s songs and there are these like 90s
- 20:24Fashions 90s 90s trends when it comes to like pagers and cell
- 20:30phones. And you know, right?
- 20:31So there was a little, there was a like nostalgic retro sort of,
- 20:37yes, production design that was taking place that was familiar
- 20:43to me. Me.
- 20:43And what to me, what that means is, oh, like the Millennials who
- 20:48grew up from this era are now. Yes.
- 20:51Like at this stage, like their parents.
- 20:55They're married couples their disgruntled married couples.
- 20:58Their couples that are thinking about marriage, divorce, and
- 21:02divorce. And South Korea's very, very
- 21:04high. It's like, at least half of
- 21:07marriages end up in divorce and, you know, like, I think the show
- 21:13It's not really a matter for me when it comes to like, oh, am I
- 21:17on like the woman side? Or the man side.
- 21:19Like it's not so much about that, what it speaks to is a
- 21:22bigger sociological thing, it's more than that.
- 21:27It's actually a socio-cultural thing in the sense that prior to
- 21:31prior to this generation, like my generation, the millennial
- 21:36generation divorce, among Korean couples was completely imbued
- 21:42with shame. It was Speakable to get a
- 21:45divorce even when I was a kid, like every every family around
- 21:50me, they should have been divorced.
- 21:53My parents also should have been divorced, get a divorce.
- 21:56You'll be happier but know they'll grit their teeth,
- 22:00they'll sleep in separate beds, they'll ignore one another for
- 22:04years at a time and wait till the kids graduate from high
- 22:08school for what? Because they are too ashamed to
- 22:12get divorced. Because people might Badmouth
- 22:14them but this is a different generation.
- 22:18It's where divorce is very much, an acceptable part.
- 22:22It's in fact, the norm and so this couple is at this breaking
- 22:26point. They're like well I mean we
- 22:28gotta think about divorce but they also are flawed and that
- 22:32they have expectations of each other which shouldn't exist in a
- 22:38loving relationship of any kind to maintain an expectation of
- 22:42another means you Will be disappointed, right?
- 22:45It means you will end up getting a divorce.
- 22:48It means you will not be living a life.
- 22:49That is your own because you're constantly.
- 22:53You know, you're, you're basically turning this person
- 22:58and this person's disappointments into your world.
- 23:01You're orbiting around this guy and all of his, you know,
- 23:05shortcomings. That's what your life becomes.
- 23:07It's you giving up your power and that's what the couple are
- 23:11doing. You know, like jinju's mad that
- 23:13that Don't forgot their anniversary, puddle, can't even
- 23:18think about the anniversary because he has this asshole of a
- 23:22client who exploits and abuses him.
- 23:25And not only that but the client's wife exploits and
- 23:27abuses him. I mean, he is really entangled
- 23:30in their marital mess to make a living because his job is so
- 23:34difficult. And when we go back in time, we
- 23:37realize becoming a pharmaceutical salesperson
- 23:40wasn't his dream career. He was obsessed with Cinema.
- 23:43It was movies that he loved that was his passion.
- 23:47So I think the going back is not just a journey and their
- 23:51romantic thing. I think that is very much like a
- 23:54secondary thing. I think it's going back and
- 23:56reclaiming who they are as a self as an identity.
- 24:01Who am I? What were my Joy's?
- 24:03What were my passions? What were my dreams?
- 24:04Who was I, when I didn't have the responsibility of other
- 24:09people's needs and I think that reclaiming is perhaps What's the
- 24:14lesson here? You know, it's not even about
- 24:16the marriage and the love. It's really about, you know,
- 24:19chinju going back and reclaiming who she is.
- 24:22It's about Pondo going back and reclaiming who he is, and it's
- 24:25saying, unless you are hole in your individuality, you will
- 24:30never ever be satisfied because you're always going to be trying
- 24:32to fill that Gap with somebody else and that's just not how it
- 24:35works. Yeah, so I agree with you like
- 24:39to the max because what I found most compelling about the show
- 24:42wasn't necessarily their relationship and how the turns
- 24:45out it's them going back and rediscovering themselves
- 24:49rediscovering like the joy of life and of the Innocence of
- 24:53like not having anything to do not having any responsibilities.
- 24:57Like what do you do to fill up your days?
- 24:59When there are no bills when there are no responsibilities,
- 25:02what is your like default and they had to get back to that
- 25:06and, you know, going back to the the you thing.
- 25:09I love when people sort of revert or have these
- 25:14Supernatural things happen to them and then they have to
- 25:16reassess their lives and reassess what they used to do,
- 25:20what they used to like you visit, I'm of hopes and promise
- 25:24and dreaming and potential. And like you said, like his
- 25:27original dream, was to be Korea's top movie director and
- 25:31win Awards, in a claim and somewhere along the way that
- 25:35just got lost it fell by the wayside.
- 25:38And there is something really enticing about just
- 25:41rediscovering. That joy and that innocence and
- 25:46youth, and just the energy of when you didn't have all of
- 25:51these responsibilities, when life didn't beat you down.
- 25:54It's very much. Like I like the movie Hook, for
- 25:59example, does the same thing where he's like has to
- 26:01re-examine and get back to his Youth and reconnect with his
- 26:07inner child, and it's very much. The same thing for the show, for
- 26:10both of them and they go through slightly different Journeys and
- 26:13it's The emotional to watch that and it's emotional to see them
- 26:18reconnect with each other as well through the course of the
- 26:21show. The last thing I want to talk
- 26:24about before we cut for just a brief spoiler section is what do
- 26:28you think the show is saying about motherhood and Parenthood?
- 26:32Because I feel like that was a huge theme throughout the show
- 26:35because you know her relationship with her mother is
- 26:38so integral to like who she is as a person and she didn't
- 26:42realize it until her mother. Was was gone and out of her life
- 26:46and her being a mother herself. And then going back to her 20
- 26:50year, old self like that, causes some craziness in her inner
- 26:54psyche, and she's very distraught and upset cries every
- 26:59night because she misses her child, she wants to be there.
- 27:02She doesn't know how to get back.
- 27:03They don't know how to break the magic, the spell.
- 27:06So I'm wondering how you felt about the portrayal of
- 27:09motherhood in the Show versus father had especially because
- 27:12tribe on do like Doesn't really like it takes a few episodes for
- 27:17a hint. To remember.
- 27:18Oh, yeah. We have a child.
- 27:20And you know, what are we gonna do about that?
- 27:22Because even if I want to stay and make some changes here, I'm
- 27:26still have a child's, you know, I have a future with a child.
- 27:29Yeah, right. Yeah, I thought that was really
- 27:33weird. The fact that like Pondo just
- 27:36forgot that he's a dad. It just that didn't seem
- 27:40convincing to me or maybe it is. I don't know.
- 27:43Maybe he's a she Eddie dad, who knows?
- 27:45I really, I don't know. The whole thing would change you
- 27:49like that was weird. Honestly, I was like, this is a
- 27:53little weird just like, this is too much crying for me.
- 27:57Child. That has probably exhausted.
- 27:58This looks really tiresome. Yeah, yeah.
- 28:02I mean it for me like the only way to abstract that into a
- 28:06relevant kind of sphere. For me personally is just to
- 28:10think of it as like, okay, perhaps this is like an inner
- 28:12child work then Perhaps this is you know because like punto has
- 28:16like a very specific point. It's like oh my dream was to be
- 28:20a filmmaker I love Cinema. It's like it's very specific but
- 28:25time that I her character, I don't remember her having that
- 28:28doesn't. What was it's like.
- 28:31Yeah, well Wisher. So your dream was to be a mom.
- 28:33I mean, I guess there's nothing wrong with that.
- 28:35There is some women, their dream is to be a mother and they want
- 28:38to be a caretaker and they want to put all of their life and
- 28:40energy and focus on to that and that is noble and awesome.
- 28:43Good. Are you if that is the case and
- 28:45perhaps that is the truth for this woman, but I was like,
- 28:48okay. But is that, is that really
- 28:51truly it and if it is ok, but I can't relate to that because I'm
- 28:56not a mother, right? So I just think of it as like,
- 28:58okay. Maybe this is her doing like
- 29:01inner child, work to perhaps recover from a trauma because
- 29:06like when she's in her present day her mother's not there, her
- 29:11mother is passed away. She's missing But in this like
- 29:15redo she's with her mother but she's also well now missing the
- 29:19fact that she herself is a mother, right?
- 29:22So I don't know like whatever that Journey means.
- 29:24Like, I'm not sure what it is when the represent the
- 29:27representation of motherhood. I don't even know.
- 29:30But what I do know is that like when it comes to Korean media.
- 29:35I mean, this whole thing of like motherhood and moms this like,
- 29:40sort of Maria, the st. Mary kind of figure At the the
- 29:44sacrificial mother to make you cry your eyes out.
- 29:49So you barf that is definitely a thing that Korean television
- 29:54writers know how to use to manipulate your emotions into
- 29:58crying and to turning the show into a melodrama, right?
- 30:02So for me, it's like that is just used as the melodramatic
- 30:07tool in this romantic comedy, right?
- 30:12Right. I feel like that was definitely.
- 30:13Or of the melodrama and it wasn't necessarily like tongue
- 30:18that out with her kid. It was her relationship with her
- 30:22mom who is played by the Fantastic.
- 30:26Kimmy kyung, I love her. She's one of the greatest and
- 30:29most who ever graced our key drama screens.
- 30:32I love her and you know I feel like that's the best part of the
- 30:38show. Like the look, The love story
- 30:40story so to speak between her and her mom.
- 30:43And Connecting and her just being so appreciative and
- 30:46grateful of her mom and her mom's like, what's gotten into
- 30:48you? So sorry, that was my phone.
- 30:54So anyway, my my instinct is to say that like, yes, absolutely.
- 30:59In the Baseline. The sanctity of like motherhood
- 31:03is ever present in the show and it is like part of so many
- 31:07kdramas and so many writers use it to emotional effect and it's
- 31:11not any different in the show. But I don't know, I just felt
- 31:15like it was really something to behold her and her relationship
- 31:19with her mom, especially knowing like what the future holds for
- 31:23them, and her trying to change it and she can't, she feels
- 31:26helpless. So it's a lot.
- 31:29What would you read the show out of five, told you bottles, if he
- 31:32five being, like, the best and like, zero being terrible, I
- 31:38mean do I have to you don't have to don't have to.
- 31:43Yeah I'm just I'm just going to say no to that because I just I
- 31:47don't like reading shows with stars and stuff.
- 31:50All right just to me it's like yeah the show the show is
- 31:53Meaningful to me in some aspects and in other aspects it's not as
- 31:58much but yeah definitely meaningful.
- 32:00Okay sure yeah I found that it was really light-hearted at
- 32:04times and obviously a lot of melodrama Emma times and the
- 32:09motherhood stuff was really touching for me and I would
- 32:13probably braid it maybe like four out of five so two bottles
- 32:18cause I just like really enjoyed it and it was perfectly paced.
- 32:24I thought like it probably could have been even shorter than 12
- 32:26episodes but I thought 12 episodes just like proper were
- 32:29done. We're leaving so episode count
- 32:32was good pacing and all that. And yeah, so I think we're going
- 32:36to just jump into spoilers really fast.
- 32:39So stick around, we'll be right back.
- 32:48Hey, you want to come in? Okay, we're on the other side of
- 32:51spoilers guys. So anything goes and I know that
- 32:54we've talked a lot about, just the journeys of the characters
- 32:57already and what they've gone through, but I do like that the
- 33:02show, let's talk about, I guess a little bit about what's that
- 33:06live? What's the difference between
- 33:08love and familiarity? Because I feel like I wasn't
- 33:12quite clear on them getting back.
- 33:14Together. Was that because they actually
- 33:18loved each other was did that just because they had been
- 33:21together for almost 20 years. And so they were familiar with
- 33:24each other and they sort of had an action plan of what they were
- 33:28going to change and how they were going to love each other
- 33:31differently. Now, did you have any thoughts
- 33:34on that? Wait, what was the question?
- 33:40Do you think it was either? They got to back together
- 33:43because of Love or because they were all right familiarity?
- 33:48Uh-huh. Uh-huh.
- 33:50Love and familiarity. I mean, You know, I mean, is
- 33:54there I guess there is a difference, it's a very minut
- 34:00difference, but in Korean, there's this word called Chung.
- 34:06It's I guess it's pronounced the same as my last name, but the
- 34:13sign Oak Korean character is written differently.
- 34:16It stems from the Chinese character Chun, so the Chinese
- 34:21and the Japanese and the Koreans know what this This word means
- 34:25and it means it's similar to love and familiarity it
- 34:32basically means a feeling or an affection that develops between
- 34:37people over a course of time. So time plays a very big role in
- 34:43developing Chung with somebody right so whereas like I mean
- 34:50Korean parents from a different generate like an older
- 34:52generation they Never Go Around saying I love my wife.
- 34:56I love my husband. I'm they wouldn't do that.
- 34:59Unless perhaps, you know, they were a romantic couple if that's
- 35:01the case. Okay great.
- 35:02But it was more that was more of an exception rather than the
- 35:05rule. The rule was, you know they
- 35:08would say a tongue thrust chandragupta or chandrasana,
- 35:11which means like damn it. Now I'm attached to you damn it
- 35:16now now my heart. Now my heart is attached to
- 35:19yours, you know so it's like mmm.
- 35:24That comes with time. It's like it's you know even
- 35:27even when like you know when you watch these like reality shows
- 35:31like you know like on on MTV or whatever like they would like be
- 35:36in one house like the real world like they would be in one house
- 35:39right? And they would just like he
- 35:40didn't fight and drink and sleep and then at the end they would
- 35:43all cry cuz they have to go home and there we go.
- 35:45But let's stay in. Touch, that's Chong, right?
- 35:48They're never going to stay in touch all the hate each other.
- 35:50They're not in touch anymore. Trust me, they're not.
- 35:53They just ended up like it's this Collective Union that ends
- 35:57up happening. When you're just around one
- 35:59another, you just get attached. You just start to feel like an
- 36:04affinity and an affection in a kinship and it's like, oh, so
- 36:07and so feels like my mother in a way, he feels like a father and
- 36:10they remind me of my brother. They remind me of my best
- 36:12friend. They remind me of a guy.
- 36:14I dated, they remind me of a woman, I know.
- 36:16And it just becomes like this little mixture, like a pool of
- 36:20affection and familiarity that develops and is Is that love?
- 36:24Perhaps, in some shallow sense? It is.
- 36:26But is it love? Love?
- 36:28Love in the sense that like with a capital.
- 36:30L like all acceptance unconditionally.
- 36:33No, it's not right? It's not.
- 36:36So yeah, I would say that with these people, perhaps it's
- 36:40closer to Chun more than just pure romantic love, right?
- 36:46And it's also Duty, it's a duty, it's a parental duty to return
- 36:51to their baby. I think that is Motivating their
- 36:55togetherness and it's like if that is the agreement then I
- 36:59don't think there's anything wrong with that.
- 37:01Go ahead and honor that agreement.
- 37:02It's okay. You know, like I mean, not every
- 37:05relationship needs to be based in love.
- 37:09It doesn't, you know, and for them, I think it's more based in
- 37:13Duty for the family, right? Yeah.
- 37:16Right. I feel like the show is
- 37:18definitely all about upholding these values, right?
- 37:23Where it's like, The family unit comes above everything else and
- 37:27we need to preserve the family and it reads like it goes back
- 37:31to that. What you were talking about
- 37:32before the spoiler break about how the previous generation
- 37:36would just grit their teeth and and stick it out just to never
- 37:39get a divorce. Not just to avoid the stigma
- 37:41around getting a divorce but also to keep this shit together,
- 37:46you know, like we need to really rally here because we've
- 37:49committed to doing this thing and like whether it's raising a
- 37:52family or just we made a Thomas and like you're stuck with me.
- 37:56Whatever the case may be, that feels like that's also in the
- 37:59DNA of them getting back together.
- 38:03At the end of the show where I found completely like, in some
- 38:06ways. I was like, wow, thank God.
- 38:08And then other ways I was like well why she could have went
- 38:11with the second male lead. Who yes, he wasn't fleshed-out.
- 38:15Yes. He had typical mommy and daddy
- 38:17issues at home but like it could have been different.
- 38:20You know what I'm saying? Yeah, yeah.
- 38:23And I think, I think, I mean, there are two things that come
- 38:28to me. I think the reason why it had to
- 38:30end that way is because of jinju's maternal commitment,
- 38:34that's yes. And to honor her maternal
- 38:37commitment, she has to go back and she has to be with Pandora
- 38:40because otherwise it's, it means to lose her baby, right?
- 38:44And for her, that was her, that was her, you know, her Destiny,
- 38:48her fate that she wanted to honor that.
- 38:51The other thing that comes to me now is that That this show aired
- 38:55on kbs2, which is Korean broadcasting systems, which is a
- 39:00public broadcaster in South Korea, public broadcasting means
- 39:05that the show that airs on that channel must serve the public
- 39:09meaning. It has to be informative and
- 39:13have moral standards. It has to honor family values
- 39:18and that's the reason why this show has the ending that it
- 39:21does. If it was on TV anime TV series,
- 39:23E. Oh my God, it be way fucking
- 39:25crazy. Right way crazier?
- 39:27It would be like over-the-top hallucinatory.
- 39:30I mean, jinju probably would have ended up with Jung Joo,
- 39:33Young's character, but because this is on a Family Channel,
- 39:38like, a public broadcasting station, and it's oriented
- 39:41towards the family. It upholds values, like don't
- 39:44get a divorce, you know, commit to each other.
- 39:48You can get through this day with the baby and that's also
- 39:52tied to South Korea's national issues like the giant decline.
- 39:57In birth rates, the giant, you know, Spike and divorces.
- 40:02And all of it is tied to the government's needs for their
- 40:07demographics. Yeah, this came out in 2017, but
- 40:11the statistics has only gotten worse in that department, for,
- 40:15for Korea and the birthrate. And it's, I mean, the makes a
- 40:19lot of sense that, because of aired on kbs2, it was a little
- 40:24bit more. Tame, I guess in terms of
- 40:28Storytelling and in terms of how this thing ended because she
- 40:33could have gone with Jung kyung. And like, they had really great
- 40:37moments together. I don't know if you remember
- 40:39some of these but like he takes her home in a taxi ride because
- 40:42she mistakes his car for a taxi and she like shakily like gives
- 40:47him a credit card to pay its 1999.
- 40:49There are no credit card machine so he just looks at it and gives
- 40:53it back to her and takes her home like no.
- 40:56Since asked, she had just reject him because he's quote, unquote
- 41:00smelled like sweat and he just like takes her home silently and
- 41:05like that's it. He's very like gives her what
- 41:08she needs. Whether it's space, whether it's
- 41:10just a ride home and he saves her on this like downhill slope,
- 41:16because she's falling, and it's very, like kdrama moment.
- 41:20Yes, it's very Tropi. Yes, we saw it from 50 different
- 41:22angles but you know, that sort of thing.
- 41:26Was built into the second male lead relationship and it wasn't
- 41:30until the latter episodes that you know bundle started coming
- 41:34back into the the frame here and he like ditched his first love
- 41:37who he tried to get with and was like trying to get back into her
- 41:41good graces. And yeah a lot of the you know
- 41:45things that bundle actually does for her are things that he had
- 41:48done before. You know, he got her pads at the
- 41:53grocery store and he got her Menstrual cramp medication
- 41:58because she had her period and she knew that she had really bad
- 42:02cramps. And he like massage her back and
- 42:04like this, these kind of motions that are not new to the
- 42:07relationship, they might even be habits at this point and he's
- 42:11just, like doing this for her and it sort of bridges, their
- 42:15relationship more, especially when you know, she's trying to
- 42:20think through, like, do I need to go pursue the second male
- 42:23lead? Or should I just, it's kind of a
- 42:25mother really Mother's relationship, motherly
- 42:27relationship with him. It's not very romantic at all.
- 42:31So, this sort of thing, it was interesting to me to see how,
- 42:37like, almost like the writer was affected, like, halfway through
- 42:40the show, they were like, yo, you gotta back it off because
- 42:42the second male leaves looking too good.
- 42:44And she needs to get back with her husband.
- 42:47So, it was like, almost like a 180, they just stopped.
- 42:51She just stopped writing stuff about, you know, Donkey, Kong's
- 42:55character. And Just went full send on the
- 42:59husband's character, so yeah, I don't know.
- 43:02I think that set up was just made from the beginning.
- 43:05I mean, like, I didn't turn out go back a couple thinking that
- 43:08they were not going to be together.
- 43:10It's like that's a very obvious thing.
- 43:12It's like, well, they're the lead right there breaking up at.
- 43:16They are going to be back together like that's a given but
- 43:20I mean, I thought it was interesting how jinju says, I
- 43:24don't want to date you. You because you smell bad.
- 43:28And to me, that's like very, very telling of the fact that
- 43:32they will never end up together, because I mean, pheromones is a
- 43:35big part of Chemistry Between people.
- 43:38And if you, if you're not attracted to somebody, you will
- 43:40never ever be attracted to that person.
- 43:42There's no lying about it. And yeah, like was not even get
- 43:46a lot more romantic towards chinju by meeting all of her,
- 43:51maybe a female fantasies in a way.
- 43:53Yeah. Way better than Pando in a lot.
- 43:56Ways. But it's like, I mean she's in
- 43:59a, you know, a young college girls body but she's an Optima.
- 44:04Yeah, she's a Middle East woman and middle-aged.
- 44:06Women don't give a crap about romantic, blah, blah, blahs.
- 44:10They really don't she really comforting.
- 44:12Mmm, they want comfort, and pandal knows what Comforts her
- 44:16like a massage, like going out and running an errand.
- 44:20That's what she wants and needs at this point.
- 44:22So it's like, the whole, like fatalism Awesome theme is very
- 44:27big in there. It's like if it's not fated to
- 44:30be it will never ever be no matter how good the package
- 44:35looks. That's.
- 44:37Yeah. All over kdrama.
- 44:38But yeah, absolutely. And then show, I think what
- 44:41really didn't sell me on. Panda was like, he always put
- 44:45her down and he was always like, oh yeah, you're not pretty.
- 44:48Oh yeah, you don't look good in that.
- 44:49Why are you wearing that? You're an Optima kept calling
- 44:52her ahjumma and it's like, These things are not like she
- 44:57obviously feels very low self-esteem, like the like the
- 45:03synopsis said and he's not helping her at all.
- 45:07Trying to overcome that or Foster some sort of self-esteem,
- 45:12make her feel good, make her feel loved or appreciated.
- 45:16And the May Queen competition that she competes in she didn't
- 45:19originally but now that she's back in 1999, she decides to
- 45:23compete in the May Queen competition.
- 45:25And all the guys are swooning and are like pain though is
- 45:29mesmerized by her on the stage. But again before that just
- 45:33before that he was belittling her he all over the show.
- 45:38It seems like he wants to win over her in some way, put her in
- 45:41her place and it was so disheartening to see her to see
- 45:46him burst her bubble time and time again.
- 45:49So that was like I mean that's an interesting observation
- 45:54because Was like for me again again, just going back to just
- 45:59me being like, culturally Korean.
- 46:01I mean, I'm Korean American but I'm culturally Korean as well.
- 46:04And it's just like being like roasty and ribbing is a bit of a
- 46:10love language among Koreans like, interesting.
- 46:13I mean, I'm a, I'm a comic now. So I'm definitely with my tribe.
- 46:17Like we're always putting one another down with love and all
- 46:20of it are there all jokes, but we can be vicious and I mean
- 46:25when my comedian friends rib me and Rose to me, I mean I find it
- 46:30so funny like and I feel so loved and seen by them when they
- 46:36when they call me out on stuff or you know like make fun of me
- 46:41like and rip me a new one. Like there's I get no better
- 46:44Greater Joy than when my closest friends do that to me and it's
- 46:50like, yeah, it's problematic in a sense because, you know,
- 46:54abusive Edwards, do end up taking a toll, but in another
- 46:58sense it's like a habitual thing that Korean especially Korean
- 47:03couples. Do to one another thinking and
- 47:06believing that that is love that.
- 47:08That's a love language and I think a lot of couples
- 47:10especially when they're older they have that sort of routine
- 47:14with each other. And I kind of noticed how you
- 47:18brought up the word, self-esteem multiple times on this
- 47:23recording. Whereas I For once, wondered
- 47:26about her self-esteem at all. Mmm.
- 47:28And in the case with jinju, I think she had to go back and
- 47:34confront this whole like baby thing and inner child thing,
- 47:37because she was not good at loving herself.
- 47:41Self-esteem is not an issue of other people.
- 47:43Ultimately self-esteem is an issue of can you love and accept
- 47:48yourself for who and what you are in this present moment,
- 47:51fully and unconditionally, that's all it is and it's if the
- 47:55Answer is no, then it's like, okay, well, there are tools and
- 47:58there are ways that you can get yourself to that place and it
- 48:01will never ever ever come from a husband.
- 48:05Yeah, no, I completely agree with that.
- 48:08I think that Majin do was for me.
- 48:12I saw her constantly crumbling whenever he would put her down,
- 48:16or say, these ribbing comments to her, especially, like, going
- 48:21back in time. Obviously, in the future, I'm
- 48:24sorry. The present day she was not
- 48:28laughing, she wasn't entertained, she wasn't feeling
- 48:31loved when he would do that to her.
- 48:34And in the past she almost took matters into her own hands and
- 48:37she was like, well, even if you don't think I'm beautiful,
- 48:39everybody here does and maybe I am and it's like, she accepts it
- 48:43for herself and participating. In the May Queen competition was
- 48:47more for her because she didn't even win and she was, she felt
- 48:51good about it. She felt good about performing
- 48:54and singing. Singing, which again, like,
- 48:56that's in her wheelhouse. Anyway, in tongue that has
- 48:59wheelhouse. But yeah, that whole competition
- 49:03and the way that, you know just her developing some confidence
- 49:10on the stage was making him fall for her.
- 49:14Again, making pain do like rethink and like he was like oh
- 49:18my God, he turned other people and he was like does she look
- 49:21amazing to you or what? And they were like.
- 49:22No, not everyone looks like that like she looks really good.
- 49:25Good. So again it's just like I don't
- 49:28know why he wouldn't think to maybe change.
- 49:31Yes, it's a love language to some people, but it definitely
- 49:35didn't seem like a love language to her.
- 49:37And I think what we can, oh, sorry, go ahead.
- 49:42Yeah, no just to add, I think it just means again.
- 49:46Like it doesn't matter what Panda thinks.
- 49:49It doesn't matter what pain does says or does when it comes to a
- 49:54healthy self-esteem and a healthy ego.
- 49:56It's up to jinju herself to go and find that and participating
- 50:00in events, like the May queen, or a talent show or going and
- 50:05finding her own thing, right? That is going to be the means to
- 50:11attaining a self-esteem and a healthy ego.
- 50:15And no matter what Punk was says, wouldn't shake her Her if
- 50:19she had that subtle that's solidity in her like I'm saying
- 50:23like when my comedian friends rib me and write down, write
- 50:27funny as hell. I'm not sure if you don't have
- 50:29them out of the issues but because I don't give a crap what
- 50:33anybody says or thinks about me or my body or my opinion,
- 50:37doesn't matter. I like it.
- 50:39I love it. I love the way I am.
- 50:41So go off. It's okay.
- 50:44That's the point. That's why she had to go back.
- 50:47That's why she had to confront her.
- 50:48Stand that way because she was lost, she was totally
- 50:52disconnected from who she was. All she could do was cry about
- 50:55her dead mother or cry about how her husband's not meeting her
- 50:58needs or cry about how our baby's missing is.
- 51:00All she could do. It always had to do it.
- 51:03Other people missing but it's like no, no, nobody is going to
- 51:07fill that up for you. You gotta go it and get it
- 51:09yourself. So to me pain, do it didn't
- 51:12really bother me as much. Yeah, I think she there's a
- 51:15scene at the beginning of the show where she is out and about
- 51:18with her. Be in the stroller and she has
- 51:20like a stain on her shirt and she looks really run down and
- 51:23she's self-conscious by just one person like looking at her.
- 51:28She's feels very self-conscious. She tries to hide the stain and
- 51:33you know it's all about I think in the past like you said it's
- 51:36going back and just finding that place where she feels beautiful
- 51:41all on her own and absolutely like feeling beautiful in the
- 51:46present day. Like, Nothing to do with like on
- 51:50do at the end of the day and I've had everything to do with
- 51:53her and how she saw herself. I do wish like really quick,
- 51:59like, going back to that note that you were like, she doesn't
- 52:00really have a dream when she was in her 20s.
- 52:03And I do feel like that's a Miss on the show because like tomando
- 52:07had such a clear, like, oh, I love movies, he had all these
- 52:10movie posters which were great to see.
- 52:13Like, yeah. Brad Pitt from Legends of the
- 52:14Fall, and Titanic, and Truman Show, and ghosts and Leon the
- 52:17Professional. All these.
- 52:18He's different movie posters and you could tell that he was a
- 52:21movie buff. And he really liked that was
- 52:23part of his personality. And in going back, she didn't
- 52:28have like these touch points that you were like, oh, she like
- 52:31to do this or oh, she was into that back then.
- 52:34She had this dream and it wasn't explicit that she wanted to be a
- 52:37mother either. So I was like, I don't really
- 52:40get like what the, what her what she was aiming for.
- 52:43She was a history, major, but like she didn't seem that
- 52:46interested in History either. Yeah.
- 52:50I feel like that. Yeah.
- 52:51And I think I think that's the reason why she had self-esteem
- 52:55issues. That was the reason why when
- 52:56she's an older woman like she feels like she's empty and
- 52:59missing and they're all these gaps and it's like I don't think
- 53:04the show was trying to falter for that know the show was just
- 53:07revealing to know, it was just revealing to everybody.
- 53:11It's like some people at a certain point in their lives
- 53:15look back and realize that their life has been that empty That
- 53:19that they've been dictating their whole lives around, fears
- 53:22and expectations of other people and it could, it could happen at
- 53:27age, 7 or it could happen at age 70.
- 53:30It doesn't like, there's no way to know and it's like, for some
- 53:35people, like, when they reach that Pinnacle of divorce, a lot
- 53:39of the times, it's that I have, I have I have friends around me
- 53:42now who are getting divorced, because they're, like, I didn't
- 53:45know who I was, and I think that's what's And ginger because
- 53:50it's like she didn't know who she was.
- 53:52And that's why she felt lost all the time.
- 53:54But what she did know is once she became a mother, it's like
- 53:58now, I know who I am. Now, I know I have a sense of
- 54:01purpose and it's like, that is just as honorable and okay, you
- 54:07know, and that's why she had to go back.
- 54:08So the show is actually very nuanced and complex and being
- 54:12able to deliver some kind of painful truth.
- 54:16That could actually be Eating Lee traumatic when a woman
- 54:20especially in her late 30s or mid 40s or whatever, when they
- 54:25suddenly confront that and that's actually the case with a
- 54:29lot of Korean mothers. A lot like countless Korean
- 54:33mothers because patriarchy is so like such a Stranglehold in that
- 54:38country. So I want to wrap up with just
- 54:42looking at some of the comedic B because you're a comedian and I
- 54:45don't know if you remembered some of these things but they I
- 54:48think the friends had like a Bruce Lee outfit going on for
- 54:52much of the show and they even comment on it.
- 54:55And that was pretty funny to see the long hair on yoo-kyung, who
- 55:00plays the character duck chick. I don't know if you remember
- 55:03that scene, how they revealed it, they were being punished in
- 55:08there. It's not a club.
- 55:10It's like their major They were, I can't remember engineering.
- 55:16I think they were engineering majors and they were being
- 55:19punished in a written one of the classrooms.
- 55:21And they were like, man. I just wish that a girl would
- 55:25like come through and save us because they were like, this
- 55:28whole thing will end if by some miracle, a girl walks in the
- 55:30room and they think that a girls walking up into the room and
- 55:34it's actually Yi kyung because he looks his silhouette.
- 55:38Looks like a girl, which is a pretty nice bait and switch.
- 55:43Yeah, can become be tagged wise. I thought it was really funny.
- 55:47Yeah. The flashback of her getting
- 55:49freaked out by The Ghost and Library which isn't really a
- 55:52ghost at all. And they put the psycho musical
- 55:55score over top of it, which I thought was brilliant.
- 55:58It's not even like the actual It's like the opening credits of
- 56:05psycho, which I thought was like, who's gonna know?
- 56:07This is particularly a psyche from the Psycho movie.
- 56:12Yeah. And then they spoofed to kdramas
- 56:14as well, they spoofed Goblin. They started playing like the
- 56:19Beautiful Life song from Goblin. And then they also spoke
- 56:25descendants of the sun with like a clear.
- 56:27Rip, she drops a handkerchief and the guy comes and looks All
- 56:32the part of some dookie and I thought those were really good
- 56:36moments. Did you did you have any moments
- 56:38that you remember being really funny to you?
- 56:45I mean, like again the writer is a comedy writer.
- 56:48She's a sitcom writer. So it's like, that's a given.
- 56:52I feel like comedic, not so much, but perhaps like a
- 56:57satirical sort of moment that I appreciated on this show is the
- 57:03scene. I think it was an episode 2.
- 57:06When change is walking somewhere and a guy on campus Apus grabs
- 57:12her by the wrist and yank sir towards him and he's a stranger.
- 57:16She don't know who he is, but there's like a slow-motion
- 57:18effect. It's like romanticized, but
- 57:22she's like not responding in a romantic way.
- 57:24She's kind of like what the hell, you know?
- 57:28And I was like, oh, this is great because they're the
- 57:32creators of the show are spoofing on that Trope of the
- 57:36wrist, grab him like like for me, I bark about it all the time
- 57:41on my Cast. But I hate that moment because
- 57:44it's like, first of all, why how dare you write like that's her,
- 57:48that's her wrist. Yeah.
- 57:49Like why are you yanking her around toward that's very
- 57:52aggressive and violent and unnecessary.
- 57:55It's not cool. You know?
- 57:57And the show was satirizing that it's like, yeah, this is in
- 58:01Korean dramas all the time and they frame it at a romantic
- 58:04Meson son, but it's not. Okay, stop doing it, you know,
- 58:08right? And so I appreciated that
- 58:10moment. Yeah, I like that move into.
- 58:15We need to have more like we need to do satire on more tropes
- 58:21but yeah, that was a really good one.
- 58:24Well, I think we're coming to the end of the episode coming to
- 58:27the end of my notes. So do you have anything to add
