- You’re sitting in that glass-walled conference room, heart hammering against your ribs, and the CEO just asked a question you know the answer to—but saying it feels like jumping off a cliff without a parachute. Let’s get real for a second. We need to talk about the heavy, invisible weight you carry when you walk into a room with people who hold the keys to your career trajectory. It’s not just nerves. It’s not just imposter syndrome, though those are definitely there, lurking in the shadows like uninvited guests at a wedding. No, this is something deeper. It’s the fear of speaking truth to senior leadership. You have data. You have intuition. You have a perspective that could save the company millions or prevent a PR nightmare. But your mouth stays shut. Why? Because somewhere along the line, you internalized a contract that says safety equals silence. That if you keep your head down, you won’t rock the boat. If you don’t challenge the narrative, you won’t be seen as difficult, disruptive, or worse, ungrateful for the seat at the table. I see this every day in my coaching practice. Women who are brilliant, strategic, and deeply capable, yet they shrink themselves to fit into the boxes their bosses have built. They nod when they should speak. They smile when they want to scream. And then, later, in the quiet of their car or the solitude of their kitchen, they replay the scene over and over, dissecting every micro-expression, wondering what would have happened if they had just said the thing. The cost of that silence isn’t just missed opportunities; it’s a slow erosion of your own authority. Every time you choose safety over truth, you send a message to your brain that your voice doesn’t matter. And eventually, you start believing it. Here is the secret that most C-suite executives will never tell you on a podcast, but I’m going to tell you right now: they are terrified too. Not of you. Not of making mistakes. But of being wrong. Of being exposed as frauds. When you sit across from a senior leader, you might perceive them as monolithic pillars of certainty, but often, they are drowning in uncertainty. They have stakeholders breathing down their necks, market forces shifting beneath their feet, and the constant pressure to perform. So when you offer a dissenting opinion, even gently, it can feel like an attack on their competence. That is why so many leaders surround themselves with yes-men. It’s easier. It’s safer. It feeds the ego. But here is where you come in. You are not here to feed the ego. You are here to add value. To solve problems. To lead. And leading requires truth. But truth needs to be packaged. It needs to be delivered with such clarity and care that it cannot be dismissed as criticism. It has to be framed as partnership. Think of it this way: you are not challenging their idea; you are stress-testing it with them. You are helping them build a better version of their vision. When you shift your mindset from 'I need to prove I’m right' to 'I need to help us succeed,' the dynamic changes entirely. You move from adversary to ally. And allies are listened to. Allies are trusted. Allies become indispensable. So how do you actually do this? How do you walk into that room and speak up without trembling? It starts long before the meeting. It starts with preparation. Most women wait until the moment of crisis to formulate their thoughts, and by then, the adrenaline is spiking, and the filter is tight. Instead, you need to prepare your truth in advance. Write it down. Practice it. Say it out loud in front of a mirror or to a trusted colleague. You need to know exactly what you want to say, why it matters, and what outcome you are hoping for. Clarity is kindness. When you are vague, you give leaders room to misinterpret you, to dismiss you, or to forget what you said five minutes later. Be specific. Use data. Ground your intuition in evidence. For example, instead of saying, 'I think this strategy might fail,' try saying, 'Based on the Q3 engagement metrics, I’m concerned that this approach might alienate our core demographic. Here is the data point that suggests that risk.' See the difference? One is an opinion. The other is an insight. One invites debate. The other invites collaboration. You don’t have to do it all at once. Start small. Pick one meeting where you plan to speak up with prepared clarity. Just one. Build that muscle. Then do it again next week. Over time, the fear diminishes because you are building a track record of valuable contributions. Now, let’s talk about the risk. Because even when you prepare perfectly, even when you frame your truth as partnership, there is still a chance that the reaction won’t be what you hoped for. Maybe the leader gets defensive. Maybe they interrupt you. Maybe they ignore your point entirely. This is where the emotional toll hits hard. It’s easy to take professional pushback personally. It’s easy to spiral into thinking, 'They hate me,' or 'I’m not cut out for this level.' But you have to separate the feedback from your worth. Their reaction is a reflection of their capacity, not your value. If you face resistance, do not retreat into silence. Do not apologize for having spoken. Instead, pause. Breathe. Ask a clarifying question. 'Help me understand your perspective on that data.' Or, 'What would need to change for you to feel comfortable with this approach?' This keeps the conversation open. It shows resilience. It demonstrates that you are confident enough in your position to withstand scrutiny. And sometimes, the hardest part of speaking truth is simply enduring the discomfort of the pause after you’ve spoken. Let the silence hang. Don’t rush to fill it. Confidence is comfortable with quiet. Insecurity rushes to explain itself away. Trust yourself to hold the space. When you consistently bring truth to the table, you do more than just influence a single decision. You begin to shift the culture around you. You model behavior for your peers. You show younger women in your organization that it is safe to disagree, that it is safe to be different, that it is safe to be human. This is how you create psychological safety. And psychological safety is the bedrock of high-performing teams. Research shows that teams who feel safe to take risks are more innovative, more efficient, and more resilient. By speaking your truth, you are contributing to a healthier, more effective workplace for everyone. But remember, you cannot force this change alone. You need allies. Find other leaders who value honesty. Support each other. Celebrate the small wins when someone speaks up. Create a network of mutual reinforcement. When you feel isolated in your desire to be authentic, lean on that network. Share your stories. Normalize the vulnerability. It takes courage to be the first voice in the room, but it takes wisdom to build a room where many voices can be heard. You are not just fighting for your place; you are fighting for the future of how we work together. I want you to leave this episode with one clear understanding: your voice is not just a tool for communication; it is your greatest asset in leadership. It is the lever that moves markets, shifts cultures, and defines your legacy. Do not let fear rob you of that power. Do not let the comfort of silence steal your influence. Speak your truth, even if your hands shake. Speak it with kindness, with data, with clarity. Speak it as a partner, not a provocateur. And if you stumble, if you fumble your words, or if the reaction is harsh, forgive yourself. Learn. Adjust. Try again tomorrow. You don’t have to be perfect. You just have to be present. Present with your whole self. Present with your insights. Present with your humanity. The world does not need more echoes. It needs your unique frequency. It needs your specific, hard-won perspective. So the next time you sit in that glass-walled room, and the CEO asks the question, take a breath. Feel the ground beneath your feet. Remember why you are there. And then, speak. Not because it is easy, but because it is necessary. Because you are ready. Because you are here. And because the truth deserves to be heard. I’m Deborah Doyle. Keep speaking. Keep leading. I’ll see you in the next one.
