- 0:00Welcome to Tabernacle Talk. Tabernacle Talk is a Bible study
- 0:03podcast brought from Tabernacle Baptist Church in Essex, MD.
- 0:07I'm your host, Brian Self. We hope this podcast encourages
- 0:10you to know Christ, grow in his word and show his love to
- 0:14others. Let's dive right in.
- 0:15Hey, welcome back to Tabernacle Talk.
- 0:17Today we are in Isaiah chapter 27.
- 0:20We're in the very last chapter of Isaiah's mini apocalypse, the
- 0:26little apocalypse of Isaiah. This is looking at what God
- 0:30reveals about the end of the human story.
- 0:34And so I'm super, super excited for today's episode because it
- 0:38has one of my favorite things in the Bible, which is the sea
- 0:43dragon, the sea serpent leviathan, the tanneneem is one
- 0:49of the Hebrew words for that. And so let's read through and by
- 0:55way of refresher, we've talked about this in Psalms, we've
- 0:58talked about it in Acts, we've talked about it.
- 1:01We actually talked about it several times through in Psalms
- 1:06and we've seen it a couple of times already in the book of
- 1:11Isaiah. I'm also going through a Bible
- 1:13study right now in Job over on our Tabernacle Baptist Essex
- 1:18sermon podcast with a small group on Sunday nights.
- 1:21We're almost done with that study and it's come up a couple
- 1:24times there too. The, and I've mentioned it when
- 1:29I was preaching through Genesis chapter 1, the Bible was written
- 1:37in a particular time and within a particular culture, the
- 1:42ancient Near East. So that would be the area of
- 1:46Israel, Canaan by Iran, Iraq and ancient Assyria, Babylon and
- 1:56over by Egypt and some of those cultures.
- 2:00So the Bible wasn't written into a void.
- 2:06It wasn't written before anything else was written.
- 2:09There were other works and even other religious thoughts and
- 2:13cultures that were around. The Bible did not borrow from
- 2:21other sources truths about God. It did not borrow from other
- 2:26people what like events took place.
- 2:31But often scripture will use similar language or it will use
- 2:36a story type to talk about a spiritual reality.
- 2:42And one of my favorite ways that they do this is through talking
- 2:46about, I'll call it the Chaos Dragon.
- 2:50And there's a great series that was put out, podcast series, and
- 2:54then a video with some descriptions on this that you
- 2:57can look at that the Bible Project put out tracing this
- 3:01theme all the way from Genesis 1 where it first appears, all the
- 3:05way to Revelation where it ends up with the apostle John.
- 3:11And he, and he's certainly drawing from things here and in
- 3:15Daniel seven, among other locations.
- 3:19So what is the Chaos Dragon? In the surrounding nations, they
- 3:26thought of the start of the world, the start of human
- 3:32existence or animal existence as being kind of a fluke.
- 3:38It was an accident. It was not something that was
- 3:41inevitable. It wasn't something that was
- 3:43even intended to ennoble the human race.
- 3:47Instead they viewed spiritual beings as the ultimate, like the
- 3:54quintessential reality. And that there were the various
- 3:59gods and demigods that showed up onto the scene.
- 4:03But that as they began making animals and even humans as like
- 4:10their slaves, the things that they were enslaving for their
- 4:14purpose, that the humans were just meant to serve the various
- 4:17gods, that there were primordial evil, I'll say malevolent
- 4:26spiritual beings typified by the waters.
- 4:32So as you got closer to like Canaan and and Palestine, that
- 4:36would be like the Mediterranean Sea waters in other locations of
- 4:39the world. That would be, you know, the
- 4:42various oceans, the Indian Ocean, the Atlantic way over
- 4:47towards the other end of of Europe and Africa or the Pacific
- 4:49Ocean as you get out towards, you know, Japan and China,
- 4:53places like that. I've heard speculation as well
- 4:58that even knowing the effects of the flood from Genesis 6 and
- 5:05wherever you go in the world you will hear these flood stories of
- 5:09when the waters came and destroyed what existed except
- 5:16for one portion of humanity. That no matter where you go in
- 5:20ancient cultures you will find that story.
- 5:23The thought was this that if you are watching the video version
- 5:29of this I did not notice that my reactions thing was on.
- 5:32So you just saw a giant thumbs up appear out of nowhere.
- 5:37So the with the waters that came and destroyed the earth, there
- 5:44was a recurring fear and legend story that what was animating
- 5:52the waters to come and destroy the world were giant sea
- 5:57serpents or the kind of older word would be dragon.
- 6:02That is a large great reptile. I've mentioned it down here
- 6:07before. Don't think medieval dragon with
- 6:10you know, the legs and wings. More of a just giant sea snake
- 6:16is is how you could think about that.
- 6:18You can also look in the book of Job and see kind of God's
- 6:21description of this. There is some unknown aspects of
- 6:29whether or not this was also describing A literal creature
- 6:34that existed during those time periods.
- 6:38Most of the time it's used metaphorically and especially in
- 6:42the prophets it's used as a metaphor so that the sea snake,
- 6:46the chaos dragon, the waters wanted to destroy life so the
- 6:52gods had like made humans to be their slaves.
- 6:54But then the water, malevolent spiritual beings, they wanted to
- 7:00destroy everything that was on the land.
- 7:02So it is used in the other cultures of the ancient Near
- 7:07East to talk about evil spiritual beings.
- 7:12Scripture talks about these beings not as some sort of rival
- 7:16to what God was wanting to do. Instead, we're told in Genesis
- 7:20One that God created the tenonym, the great sea monsters,
- 7:26that he is the one that created these.
- 7:28He is the one that created all spiritual beings.
- 7:31And there's even a pattern that is put into Genesis 1 where God
- 7:36says that he's going to make two things and then he ends up
- 7:39making three things. So he says he's going to make
- 7:41the sun and moon or the the greater light and the lesser
- 7:46light. The sun and moon aren't even
- 7:48named in that particular chapter, Contra the worship of
- 7:53the sun and moon that was very common back in that time.
- 7:56So God doesn't even call them by their names.
- 7:58He he just says the big light and the little light.
- 8:00He says, I'm going to make these.
- 8:02And then it says, and he made the stars also.
- 8:04And as I've told you guys, anytime you hear stars mentioned
- 8:07in scripture, always be thinking of the spiritual beings as well.
- 8:12And the physical lights that you can see in the night sky or that
- 8:16you can look at with a telescope or Google pictures of those are
- 8:20emblematic. The representative of the fact
- 8:23that far above human existence, far above physical existence,
- 8:28there is a spiritual reality that affects so much of our
- 8:33world. And Scripture talks a lot about
- 8:34that. So there was the sun and moon
- 8:40and he made the stars also. Then God says that he's going to
- 8:44make the birds above and the fish below.
- 8:47And it says that he did that. And it said, and he also made
- 8:51the Tannini the great sea monsters.
- 8:54So just as the stars is a way to speak about or a way to think
- 9:00about the spiritual beings, so it is as well with the Tannini
- 9:04that all throughout the scriptural story, these
- 9:10mythological sea monsters were a way that the biblical authors
- 9:17described spiritual beings, evil spiritual beings in particular.
- 9:22And then they apply that to human governments and rulers to
- 9:32say that when these human governments and rulers, they're
- 9:37not behaving like God, they're not seeking human flourishing.
- 9:41They're seeking destruction, incredible like taxation,
- 9:46brutality, sexual immorality, greed, all of that.
- 9:51They are not following the lead of God's spirit, of God's way.
- 9:57Instead, they are acting like the sea serpents, the chaos
- 10:03Dragons that want to destroy everything, if you will, using
- 10:07kind of more of a, a modern example, you would say, OK,
- 10:11right now Putin is acting like Godzilla, destroying this land
- 10:17and churches and all of that kind of stuff that you would say
- 10:22he is acting like Godzilla. That's kind of the same picture
- 10:25that the biblical authors give. So that's the way that we're
- 10:33walking into this truth. Isaiah 27 verse #1 On that day,
- 10:41Yahweh with His relentless, large, strong sword will bring
- 10:46judgement on Leviathan, the fleeing serpent.
- 10:50Leviathan, the twisting serpent. He will slay the monster that is
- 10:56in the sea. And now you see why I did 10
- 10:58minutes of back story for that statement.
- 11:01Because now you go, oh, God is going to crush and destroy
- 11:06spiritual evil. It's also part of the picture of
- 11:09why Satan is called a serpent. That in Genesis 3 in the garden,
- 11:16there was someone that is there that talks about, hey, if you do
- 11:20this, you will be like the Elohim.
- 11:23You will be like God, or you'll be like the gods, the spiritual
- 11:27beings, knowing both good and evil.
- 11:31Well, who is the serpent that knows what the Elohim are like?
- 11:36This is, as we would know him later, Satan, that great
- 11:39serpent. And so that's what John calls
- 11:42him in Revelation 12. That's what Luke, that's how
- 11:45Jesus describes it in Luke chapter 10.
- 11:48This is that one that is fallen that was cast down in Isaiah 14,
- 11:53that one who wanted to be proud, that one who wanted to ascend
- 11:58into the mount of the highest, but he was cast down.
- 12:02And so this is this one, and God is going to kill him.
- 12:06I love the descriptive words there, the relentless.
- 12:09There's nowhere that Satan will be able to go that God's justice
- 12:13will not pursue him. It is large, it is greater than
- 12:18Satan is, and it is a strong sword that it doesn't matter the
- 12:21might of the quote UN quote evil one, that God reigns supreme.
- 12:26He is better, He is stronger, He's more powerful, He is
- 12:29bigger, and He will not stop until He brings judgment on this
- 12:34One who wanted the death and destruction of all humanity.
- 12:41Verse #2 On that day, sing about a detestable vineyard.
- 12:46I am Yahweh who watches over it to water it regularly.
- 12:50So there's this place, no one wants it, but God is going to
- 12:53care for it. He's protecting it.
- 12:55He's watering it daily, He says, so that no one disturbs it.
- 12:59I watch over it night and day. I am not angry.
- 13:04If only there were thorns and briars for me to battle, I would
- 13:08trample them and burn them to the ground, or let it take hold
- 13:12of my strength. Let it make peace with me.
- 13:15Make peace with me. In days to come, Jacob will take
- 13:19root. Israel will blossom and bloom
- 13:22and fill the whole world with fruit.
- 13:24Here God says there is this place, this people that right
- 13:28now no one wants anything to do with them.
- 13:30They are not popular. No one's like, Oh yes, we are
- 13:33just so in awe of Judah and Israel.
- 13:37And God says, no, I'm watching over them, I'm protecting them.
- 13:40And again, this is them about to go into exile in the next 100
- 13:44years. But God says that even though
- 13:47you are going to experience hardships, don't let it make you
- 13:51think that I am angry with you. I am actually sustaining you
- 13:56through this time. Even as we would read like the
- 13:59book of Esther is a great example of this, that God was
- 14:02actively caring for and protecting his people even from
- 14:05kind of existential a death that could that could take place or
- 14:11people just abandoning any worship of Yahweh or observance
- 14:15of his commands. That God sustained both their
- 14:18worship and their lives, their national identity during that
- 14:22time, so that then he would bring them back into the land.
- 14:25And Even so, it is with us today that God watches over us night
- 14:29and day. He cares for us.
- 14:31He's protecting us. He, he says, man, I wish that
- 14:34some thorns and briars would try to attack my people because I
- 14:39would bring those thorns and briars down here.
- 14:41These effects of the curse that what was brought on because of
- 14:44the serpent God is going to undo every aspect of the curse.
- 14:49Even the curse that was happening in the exile.
- 14:52God would bring it down. Verse #7 Did Yahweh strike
- 14:56Israel as he struck the one who struck Israel?
- 14:59Like did God deal as harshly with Israel as he did with
- 15:03Assyria or with Babylon? Certainly we know from history
- 15:06the answer is no, He dealt more harshly with the others.
- 15:12Was Israel killed like those killed by Yahweh?
- 15:15You disputed with Israel by banishing and driving her away.
- 15:19He removed her with his severe storm on the day of the east
- 15:23wind. So God removed Israel from the
- 15:25land by Assyria. Verse #9 Therefore Jacob's
- 15:29iniquity will be atoned for in this way, and the results of the
- 15:33removal of his sin will be this. When He makes all the altar
- 15:37stones like crushed bits of chalk, no Asherah poles or
- 15:41incense altars will remain standing.
- 15:44For the fortified city will be desolate pastures, deserted and
- 15:47abandoned like a wilderness. Calves will graze there and
- 15:51there. They will spread out and strip
- 15:53its branches. When its branches dry out, they
- 15:56will be broken off. Women will come and make fires
- 15:59with them, for they're not a people with understanding.
- 16:02Therefore their Maker will not have compassion on them, and
- 16:05their Creator will not be gracious to them.
- 16:08On that day Yahweh will thresh grain from the Euphrates River
- 16:11as far as the Wadi of Egypt, and you Israelites will be gathered
- 16:15one by one. On that day a great ram's horn
- 16:19will be blown, and those lost in the land of Assyria will come,
- 16:23as well as those dispersed in the land of Egypt, and they will
- 16:26worship Yahweh at Jerusalem on the holy mountain.
- 16:30So though there would come a time of desolation, a time, the
- 16:35time of exile where everyone was gone, the false worship in the
- 16:40idolatry that was the reason for their exile from the land, the
- 16:45idolatry would cease. That's those ashra poles, the
- 16:48altars, the incense, all of that, that would all go away.
- 16:54The great, you know, fortifications of mankind,
- 16:58symbols of their power and military might, they would go
- 17:01away, but God would be the one to bring them back into the land
- 17:06and he would care for them. And I love that he says new
- 17:11Israelites will be gathered one by one.
- 17:14God has a care for each individual person.
- 17:17And on that day, when judgment comes, it's not going to matter,
- 17:24if you will, who is holding the ball last, It will return to its
- 17:30rightful owner. That's what we would read even
- 17:32in the Beatitudes, that it's not the powerful or the rich that
- 17:35will inherit the earth, that will be a part of the Kingdom of
- 17:38God. It is those that have a humility
- 17:40before God, those that hunger and thirst after right
- 17:44relationship with God and with people.
- 17:46It is the poor in spirit. It's the meek.
- 17:50It's those that are peacemakers in a broken world.
- 17:53And so may we seek to be the kind of people that God would
- 17:59want to have in His Kingdom. And we know that as we attempt
- 18:03that and often fail it, that just like the Israelites, we can
- 18:07be forgiven and atoned for, not through what we do, but through
- 18:11what heaven does on our behalf. I'm even preaching at the time
- 18:15that I'm recording this, this coming Sunday on John 1916
- 18:19through 30, which is Jesus and the crucifixion and how he gave
- 18:23his life for us and he cried out on the cross to Telesty.
- 18:27It is finished. The work is complete and because
- 18:30the work is complete and Satan is going to be judged and
- 18:34crushed, life is what awaits us and the we were the detestable
- 18:40vineyard that we were at enmity with God, if you will.
- 18:43We were on Team Leviathan, Team Serpent of our Father the Devil,
- 18:47as Jesus tells people at various times during his ministry.
- 18:53Yet we can be those that are brought into relationship
- 18:57through accepting what Christ has done on our behalf.
- 19:01And God is the one that watches over us, that cares for us, that
- 19:04protects us even through the wilderness until we are reunited
- 19:08with Him. Thank you for tuning in to
- 19:11today's episode. Next episode, we're going to go
- 19:15back into some condemnation, some woes, woe, some woes
- 19:22against the various nations around Israel, around Judah.
- 19:27And it'll be a good for us to remember once again that yes,
- 19:32there is good that is coming, but that good isn't guaranteed
- 19:36for every nation or for every place.
- 19:38Instead solely for those who have placed their faith and
- 19:42trust in Christ. And so that is our call then is
- 19:45both to be those who have believed in Christ and we ought
- 19:48to tell others about the Lord so that one day when every nation
- 19:54falls except for the Kingdom of heaven, that we would be joined
- 19:58to that wonderful group. Thanks for tuning in today.
- 20:02God bless.
