- 0:00Speaker 1: Welcome to the reading of two days Washington Post. It
- 0:05is Saturday, April twenty six, of twenty twenty five. Your
- 0:10reader is Alice Stainer, with the reminder that RADIOI is
- 0:14an organization for those blind or with other difficulties in
- 0:20being able to hold or read printed materials. I will
- 0:25start with the front page of today's Washington Post, and
- 0:29on the left hand side at the top is a
- 0:33large picture of thousands of people lined up in Saint
- 0:37Peter's Square in Vatican City on Friday to view the
- 0:41body of Pope Francis. His view will will be Saturday,
- 0:45and it is going on right now in Rome. The
- 0:49article is entitled Pope President had Complicated Ties by Martine Powers.
- 0:58To the right of that well the scripture a beautiful
- 1:02blue sky with clouds on it on the arcade around
- 1:08Saint Peter's Square, which makes it a circle instead of
- 1:11a square in the way, But the lineup is one
- 1:15lady with a red parasol to protect it from the sun.
- 1:19But there are just people, throngs of people in blue
- 1:24jeans and jackets, all in a line. Or actually it's
- 1:32not a line. It's just a large crowd of people
- 1:34moving forward on the right to that is. Department of
- 1:39Justice charges judge with obstructing immigrant arrest, accused of misdirecting
- 1:48ICE agents Wisconsin. Case escalates offensive against judiciary, but Patrick
- 1:56Marley and Jeremy Roebuck. Below that, giant tent rises to
- 2:04hose detained immigrants semi permanent space built in Florida to
- 2:11relieve crowded ice facilities by Douglas McMillan. And to the
- 2:18left below the fold and below the picture and the
- 2:21article on Pope Fransis, Europe locks arms with Kiev, but
- 2:28urges it to bend steadfast support gives Zelensky some space
- 2:34in face of US demands by Steve Hendricks and Storhan O'Brady.
- 2:43Next to that is a picture of an NFL player
- 2:47became a monster and his daughter looks for answers. Brown's
- 2:53life descended into illness and violence by Kent Barb at

- 3:04brown on her shirt being held by I assume that's
- 3:07her father. Yes, she's Jaden Brown, and her father what's
- 3:17his name, Corwin Brown, his arms around her and around
- 3:22his number looks like number forty four, and she looks
- 3:25like she's trying to take a selfie with him, and
- 3:28then to the far right recordings. Contradict apology from Ed Martin,
- 3:35He says he was unaware of statements by Nazi's sympathizer.
- 3:40He praised Spencer s Hussu and Tom Jackman. I will
- 3:47start with the Pope Francis article, since that is of
- 3:51such importance today and a man of humbleness and of
- 3:57the people, Pope France. This often criticized Trump, but he
- 4:02knew how to charm him too. President Donald Trump had
- 4:06a complicated relationship with Pope Francis, whose funeral he plans
- 4:11to attend Saturday. And there is a picture of President
- 4:15Donald Trump and First Lady Milania meeting Pope Francis at
- 4:19the Vatican in twenty seventeen. Milania is in black and
- 4:24she has a mantilla on, and President Trump is in
- 4:29his dark blue suit with the thing his standard blue
- 4:34and white tie, and Pope Francis is in his white robes.
- 4:39And above a picture of the It's not the Transfiguration
- 4:47but in the Vatican by Martine Powers. In twenty seventeen,
- 4:53Pope Francis met President Donald Trump for the first and
- 4:57only time and diffused months of tension with the mention
- 5:01of a Slovenian pastry. During that meeting, which included some
- 5:06of Trump's family, the Pope shook the hand of First
- 5:09Lady Milania Trump. Then he smiled and gestured over to
- 5:12her husband. What do you give him to eat? Francis
- 5:17said through an interpretertka potica, Milania Trump repeated back. Then,
- 5:25appearing to realize that Pope was referring to a traditional
- 5:29baked roll from her homeland, she broke into a grin.
- 5:33Her husband laughed too. Yes. The moment captured Trump's complicated
- 5:39relationship with Francis, who died Monday. Over the course of
- 5:43the past decade, Trump, Pope Francis, and President Trump came
- 5:47to be ideological adversaries, symbols of polar opposite world views,
- 5:53but at times Trump was charmed by Francis and by
- 5:57the authenticity and immense popularity his papacy represented the complexity
- 6:03of that relationship will be on display Saturday, when Trump
- 6:07and the First Lady planned to be in Rome to
- 6:09attend Pope Francis's funeral at the Vatican. We look forward
- 6:14to being there, Trump posted Monday afternoon on truth social
- 6:19Trump will be the second sitting US president to attend
- 6:23the funeral of a pope, after George W. Bush traveled
- 6:27to the Vatican in two thousand and five to attend
- 6:30the funeral of Pope John Paul the Second. The Pope's
- 6:35brand of progressive Catholicism and Trump's populous political movement ran
- 6:42on parallel tracks before becoming president and Pope. Trump and
- 6:48Francis were both relative outsiders who came to prominence with
- 6:52a promise to shake up the status quo. They shared
- 6:56a natural ability to excite a crowd to speak into
- 7:00wrecked and plain ways that built loyalty and adolation among
- 7:04their followers. Francis, however, avoided pomp and displays of wealth
- 7:10and committed his papacy to protecting migrants as well as
- 7:14other vulnerable populations. Meanwhile, Trump embraced a lifestyle of luxury. Recently,
- 7:22he added new gold ornaments to the Oval office and
- 7:26led a political rumor centered around harsh treatment of unauthorized immigrants.
- 7:32The Pope Francis pontificate has overlapped almost exactly with the
- 7:36age of Donald Trump, said Massimo Fagioli, a professor of
- 7:42theology and religious studies at Villanova University. Pope Francis has
- 7:47been the most distinct moral voice talking about migration, the environment,
- 7:53economic justice, providing a dissenting narrative from what was coming
- 8:00from trump Ism. Trump's differences with Francis led to fiery
- 8:05clashes between the two men even before Trump was elected president.
- 8:10In February twenty sixteen, during a trip to Mexico, Francis
- 8:14stopped at the border to pray for migrants who died
- 8:17trying to reach the United States. Later, Francis spoke to
- 8:21reporters about harsh anti migration proposals in the US. A
- 8:28person who thinks only about building walls wherever they may
- 8:32be and not building bridges is not Christian. This is
- 8:37not in the Gospel, Francis told reporters. He continued, later,
- 8:44what would I advise to vote or not to vote?
- 8:47I would not get mixed up in that. I would
- 8:50only say this man is not a Christian if that
- 8:52is what he says. Reporters interpreted the Pontiff's comments, delivered
- 8:58just two days before the South Carolina primary, as a
- 9:02rebuke of then candidate Trump's proposals for border walls and
- 9:06mass deportations. Shortly after, Trump responded from a campaign rally
- 9:11in South Carolina. He was surprised at being signaled out
- 9:15by the Pope. As I'm walking up here, they said,
- 9:20mister Trump, the Pope made a statement about you. I
- 9:23said the Pope. I said, I like the Pope. Was
- 9:27it good at that? Because if it's good, I liked
- 9:29the Pope. The Pope's comments were not good, Trump told
- 9:33the crode he actually said it. Then maybe I'm not
- 9:37a good Christian or something. It's unbelievable, which is really
- 9:41not a nice thing to say, Trump said. In later statements,
- 9:45Trump said it was disgraceful for a religious leader to
- 9:49question someone's faith. He also speculated that the Pope had
- 9:53been manipulated by the Mexican government and that he would
- 9:57regret his remarks if the Vatican came the target of tourism.
- 10:02If and when the Vatican is attacked by the Isis,
- 10:06which is everyone knows is Isis' ultimate trophy, I can
- 10:11promise you that the Pope would only have wished and
- 10:13prayed that Donald Trump would have been president. Trump said.
- 10:18The back and forth was the first salvo in a
- 10:21series of public disagreements about Trump's policies. They embodied two
- 10:27completely different views of world history and of the place
- 10:30of America in the world. Vijilie said, Donald Trump is
- 10:35about giving back to America, to white America a certain
- 10:39role in the world, and Francis comes from a world
- 10:42that thinks and feels that things have to change because
- 10:46the colonial era is over. According to Ken Hackett, who
- 10:52served as the US ambassador to the Holy See during
- 10:55President Barack Obama's second term, Francis's decision to speak out
- 11:00against the political situation in the US was not with
- 11:04that precedent. Pope John Paul the Second, for example, was
- 11:08often critical of communist governments and the Soviet Union. Popes
- 11:13are not afraid to speak. My experience is they look
- 11:17at the time to speak, and they do it forthrightly, honestly,
- 11:21and directly, Hackett said. After Trump was elected in twenty sixteen,
- 11:27many people were surprised when the White House announced that
- 11:30Trump and his family would be traveling to the Vatican
- 11:33to meet the Pope, given the apparent antipathy between the
- 11:36two leaders, Trump's evenness for a meeting may have been
- 11:39a recognition of the pomps, pontiffs and almost popularity and
- 11:44worldwide influence. Less than two years earlier, Francis had been
- 11:48met with massive crowds and enthusiasm during a six day
- 11:52multi city tour of the US. It was interesting that
- 11:58Trump had to have the meetings so early in his presidency.
- 12:02Hackett said. He speculated that the President wanted to tick
- 12:07that box. There was one of the most popular people
- 12:10in the world, and he wanted to get a picture
- 12:13with him. And there is now a picture of the
- 12:17Trumps arriving at the Vatican San Demaso Courtyard for his
- 12:21private audience with Francis in twenty seventeen, and he's walking
- 12:26by some of the beekeepers. From the stance of the
- 12:30Pope and his advisors, the Trump Francis confab was in
- 12:34keeping with a longtime Vatican policy always take the meeting
- 12:40from the Vatican side. They dealt with world leaders, whoever
- 12:44they are, said John Carr, founder of the Initiative on
- 12:48Catholic Social Thought and Public Life at Georgetown University. They
- 12:52met with controversial presidential Paulstinian political leader Yasser Airfat. They
- 12:59met with people that I disagree with the Pope very
- 13:01much on abortion. They're used to dealing with people who
- 13:04have differences with and where they can find common ground,
- 13:08that's a good thing. Some journalists forecast that the twenty
- 13:12seventeen meeting would be strained, and at times there was
- 13:16noticeable awkwardness. A photo that went viral on social media
- 13:21showed an unsmiling Francis standing next to a grinning Trump,
- 13:25but according to reports at the time, the Pope loosened
- 13:28up as the visit went on. The two leaders talked
- 13:32meaningfully about international affairs, the situation in the Middle East,
- 13:37and the protection of Christian communities. They also exchanged gifts.
- 13:43The Trump presented the poth with a set of first
- 13:47edition books by Martin Luther King Junior. The Pope gifted
- 13:52Trump with copies of his own writing about inclusion, forgiveness,
- 13:56and humanity's responsibility to tackle climate change, as well as
- 14:01a large medallion symbolizing peace. Trump came away from the
- 14:06meeting with positive words honor of a lifetime to media's holiness.
- 14:10Pope Francis, I leave the Vatican more determined than ever
- 14:14to pursue peace in our world, Trump tweeted at the time.
- 14:20The meeting was considered a success, but it didn't prevent
- 14:23Francis from continuing to be an outspoken critic of Trump's
- 14:27administration policies. Earlier that year, Francis said he worried Trump's
- 14:32immigration policies we result in children separated from their families,
- 14:37and he questioned whether Trump really embodied what it meant
- 14:40to be pro life. If he is a good pro
- 14:44life believer, he must understand that family is the cradle
- 14:47of life in one must defend its unity, Francis said.
- 14:52In twenty nineteen, when asked about a border wall being
- 14:55erected between the US and Mexico, Francis described its as
- 15:00a foolish endeavor motivated by American's fear of migrants. According
- 15:05to the Now Associated Press, he said, it is a
- 15:09fear that makes us crazy. And last year, two months
- 15:13before the presidential election, the Pope criticized both President and
- 15:18then Vice President Kamela Harris. Neither of them could be
- 15:22considered pro life, he said, because Trump was cruel to
- 15:25immigrants and Harris was pro abortion. One must choose the
- 15:30less to evil, Which is the less to evil that
- 15:33lady or that gentleman, I don't know, Francis said at
- 15:37the time, each person must think and decide according to
- 15:41his her own or her own conscience. Francis's critiques of
- 15:47Trump policies continued into Trump's second term. In February, the
- 15:52Pope wrote a letter to US Catholic bishops arguing that
- 15:56mass deportations were counted to Catholic chieftjeings. I exhort all
- 16:01the faithful of the Catholic Church not to give in
- 16:04to narratives that discriminate against, or cause unnecessary suffering to
- 16:09our migrant and refugee brothers and sisters. Francis wrote at
- 16:13the time that kind of document is something you see
- 16:17once in a century, Vagiolie said, because it was viewed
- 16:22as a thinly veiled reprimand of Vice President J. D.
- 16:25Vance and the shift in US Catholic culture that Vance represents.
- 16:31On a trip to the Vatican last week, Dvance met
- 16:34with the Pope for a few minutes, becoming one of
- 16:37the few people to spend time with Francis on the
- 16:39last full day of his life. Relations between the Vatican
- 16:44and the US government have never been so troubled as
- 16:47they are now, Vagiolie said. Vatican officials are concerned about
- 16:52the Trump administration's decision to cut global humanitarian aid and
- 16:57its demonstrated willingness to commitments to European allies. The Vatican's
- 17:05relationship with the US may turn out to be a
- 17:07point of consideration in the process of selecting a new Pope.
- 17:12Francis his successor will probably be tasked with trying to
- 17:16find ways to bring Trump in the US government back
- 17:18into the fold of the global world order. The Vatican
- 17:22has soft power, and in many ways the United States
- 17:26is abandoning soft power. Will they recognize the importance of
- 17:31the soft power of the Church and of the Pope
- 17:34or will they dismiss that too. Georgetown's car said. Wisconsin
- 17:42judge arrested by FBI charged with obstructing immigrant arrest. Charging
- 17:49Milwaukee County's Circuits judge Hannah Dugan escalates the Trump administration's
- 17:55battle with local officials over immigration enforcement. Patrick Marley and
- 18:01Jeremy Roebuck out of Milwaukee. The Justice Department has charged
- 18:06a wisconsint judge with obstructing an immigration arrest operation, a
- 18:11significant escalation of Trump administration threats to target local officials
- 18:17accused of interfering with immigration enforcement. FBI Director Cash Battel
- 18:23announced the arrest of Milwaukee County's Circuit judge Hannah Duban
- 18:28on the social media platform x accusing her of intentionally
- 18:34misdirecting federal agents as they sought to detain an immigrant
- 18:39who is set to appear for an unrelated proceeding last
- 18:42week in court Bowling Stranding, the government said, the judge
- 18:47sent the federal agents away from that hearing, then escorted
- 18:51the man and his lawyer out of her courtroom through
- 18:53a private exit. Thankfully, our agents chased down the purple
- 18:58foot and he's been in customs these sense, but the
- 19:01judge's obstruction created increased danger to the public, Bettel wrote.
- 19:07Duben was charged with obstruction and concealing a person from
- 19:12arrest and was released on her own recognizance pending additional
- 19:16court proceedings. Miss Dugan wholeheartedly regrets. In protest to her arrest,
- 19:23one of her attorneys, Craig Mastio, told US Magistrate Judge
- 19:30Stephen de Drees during a brief appearance Friday in federal
- 19:34court in Milwaukee, it was not made in the interest
- 19:37of public safety. Stephen M. Riskupik, another attorney representing the judge,
- 19:44said in a statement that she will defend herself rigorously
- 19:48and looks forward to being exonerated. Dugan supporters gathered outside
- 19:53the federal courthouse in protest, including Susan Battilla, a retired
- 19:58school nurse who held a handmade free Judge Dugan sign
- 20:02and said she was chilled to the bone by the
- 20:05judges arrest. Milwaukee County Executive David Crawley, Democrat, described the
- 20:12case against Dugan as a large performative showing of law
- 20:16enforcement officials and accused the Trump administration of trying to
- 20:21install fear and hostility across our community. The Tyler August,
- 20:27the Republican majority leader of the Wisconsin State Assembly, praised
- 20:31the FBI in a statement and said Republicans in his
- 20:34chamber would act decisively if these serious allegations are confirmed.
- 20:41Lawmakers in Wisconsin have the power to remove state judges.
- 20:45Trump officials took to social media and the airwaves to
- 20:49trumpet Duggan's arrest as a significant step in their efforts
- 20:53to strike back against judges they've labeled activist. She's protecting
- 20:59a criminal defendant of crimes, of the victims of crime.
- 21:04She put the lives of our law enforcement officers at risk,
- 21:09Attorney General Pam Bindy said in an interview on the
- 21:13Fox News show America reports. Bondy also highlighted the arrest
- 21:18on obstruction charges Thursday of a former magistrate judge in
- 21:23New Mexico who resigned after being accused of harboring in
- 21:26his home an alleged member of the Venezuelan Tranto Utragoat gang.
- 21:32These judges think they're above the law. They're not, Bundy said,
- 21:38we will come after you and prosecute you. We will
- 21:40find you. Stephen Miller, the White As Deputy Chief of Staff,
- 21:45set on social media, no one is above the law.
- 21:53Justice Department officials have directed federal prosecutors nationwide to investigate
- 21:58and potentially large state and local officials who impede the
- 22:03president's immigration crackdown. The Trump administration has also openly clashed
- 22:08with state and federal judges, who have sought to restrain
- 22:12some of the government's most aggressive deportation and enforcement efforts.
- 22:17Judges in some jurisdictions have criticized efforts by immigration and
- 22:21Customs enforcement agents to locate and detain immigrants at local courthouses,
- 22:27saying the practice makes it more difficult to ensure undocumented
- 22:31immigrants will show up for court proceedings in which they
- 22:34are victims. Defendants or witnesses. Even if you are an
- 22:40undocumented immigrant, we need you to be able to understand
- 22:43that this is a safe space for us, Crawley said
- 22:47at a news conference by the afternoon. They may be
- 22:50a witness in a crime, they may be a victim
- 22:53in a crime, and if they are witness, for example,
- 22:56we need them to be able to come into this
- 22:58building fel safe, to be able to talk to actually
- 23:02be a witness. But immigration authorities say courthouses provided a
- 23:08unique setting where they can be certain their targets are
- 23:10scheduled to show up at a specific time and date
- 23:14and will have already undergone security screening. Milwaukee's Ice Office,
- 23:20which has made other arrests at Dugan's court host this year,
- 23:23has adopted a policy to detain only undocumented immigrants who
- 23:27are due in court for alleged crimes, and not to
- 23:31pursue those who may be in court as witnesses or victims.
- 23:35According to the Affidavid file in Dugan's case, a Milwaukee
- 23:39based FBI agent said in the criminal complaint that multiple
- 23:43witnesses described the judge as visibly upset when she learned
- 23:48on April eighteenth that federal agents were waiting outside her
- 23:52courtroom to hear west Eduardo Fleesuez, a thirty Yearero Mexican national,
- 23:58set to appea for her on misdemeanor state battery charges.
- 24:04Dugan allegedly confronted the agents in the hallway, according to
- 24:07the complaint, when they told her they had an administrative
- 24:11warrant to detain Ruez, she instructed them to speak to
- 24:15the court's chief judge. While the agents were away, The
- 24:19affidated says Dugan postponed Flores's hearing and directed him and
- 24:23his lawyer to lead through a private jury room exit
- 24:26instead of the public entryway. The agents later spot at
- 24:31for As Ruez outside the building. A footchase ensued. The
- 24:36agents pursued Flores Ruiz for the entire length of the courthouse,
- 24:40the complaint said. Immigration officials said Flores Ruiz had previously
- 24:46been deported to Mexico in twenty thirteen. The date he
- 24:49re entered the country was not included in court records.
- 24:53Bondi on Fox said the state domestic violence case he
- 24:57was facing involved in a ledge of sault on a
- 24:59man and woman, both of whom were injured, and take
- 25:02him to a hospital. This judge's actions to shield and
- 25:06accused a violent criminal, illegal alien from justices. Shocking and shameful.
- 25:12We are thankful for our partners at the FBIF by
- 25:15helping remove this accused criminal from American streets, Assistant Department
- 25:20of Homeland Securities Secretary Trishia McLachlan said in a statement.
- 25:26During Trump's first term, in twenty eighteen, the Justice Department
- 25:30charged the judge and court officer in Massachusetts with helping
- 25:34an undocumented if the immigrant escape from a court host
- 25:37in Newton. Prosecutors said then that as ICE agents arrived
- 25:43to detain the man, Judge Shelley M. Richmond Joseph directed
- 25:48him to leave through the court host basement, where he
- 25:51was led out the back door as the agents waited
- 25:53for him in the lobby. The federal charges were dropped
- 25:57in twenty twenty two as part of an agreement that
- 26:00required Joseph to refer herself to the Massachusetts Commission on
- 26:04Judicial CARNDUT, the body in charge of judicial discipline in
- 26:08the state. Within days of Trump's return to the White
- 26:12House in January, a top Justice Department official directed federal
- 26:16prosecutors nationwide to investigate and potentially charged state and local
- 26:22officials who impede the president's immigration enforcement agenda. Federal law
- 26:28prohibits state and local actors from resisting, obstructing, and otherwise
- 26:33failing to comply with lawful immigration related commands, wrote and
- 26:38be above then acting Deputy Attorney General. Dugan won her
- 26:43seat on the Milwaukee County bench in twenty sixteen, defeating
- 26:47a judge who had been appointed in the heavily democratic
- 26:50county by then Governor Scott Walker, Republican. Before she was
- 26:56a judge, Dugan worked as a poverty attorney and executive
- 27:00director of the Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Milwaukee.
- 27:04Friday afternoon, hours after her arrest, a sign remained hung
- 27:09on the door to or a courtroom. It instructed anyone
- 27:12who feels unsafe coming to courtroom six fifteen to contact
- 27:18a County of Court clerk to request an online hearing.
- 27:24Giant tent rises in Florida to host hundreds of detained immigrants.
- 27:31The makeshift hosing is the latest effort to ease crowding
- 27:34as the Trump administration ramps up arrests. By Douglas McMillan,
- 27:40an emigration and Customs enforcement facility in Miami plans to
- 27:45move up to four hundred immigrant detainees into a large
- 27:49tent that was erected in recent weeks to accommodate a
- 27:53surgeon population of migrants, said Representative Fredrika S. Wilson, Democrat
- 27:59of Florida, who turned toward the facility Thursday. The soft
- 28:06sided structure at Miami's Chrome North Service Processing syentum contained cots, televisions,
- 28:14ventilation pipes, and pile flooring, Wilson and her communications director
- 28:19said in interviews with The Washington Post. An ICE represented
- 28:24to told her the facility could host two hundred people
- 28:27on an upstairs level and two hundred people on a
- 28:30downstairs level, and that the agency planned to begin moving
- 28:34people into the structure on Friday. She said. The spokesman
- 28:38for ICE did not immediately respond to questions from the Post,
- 28:42including how long people may be held in the tent
- 28:45and whether the facility has increased its staff to meet
- 28:48its needs. There is a little precedent for ICE housing
- 28:52detainees in temporary structures in the United States, said units Cho,
- 28:57an attorney who advocates for emigrants detainees at the American
- 29:01Civil Liberties Union's National Prison Project. US Customs and Voter
- 29:07Protection in the Office for Refugee Resettlement had used soft
- 29:11sided facilities, but those have typically been used for very
- 29:15short term detention, she said. The tent at Kromme is
- 29:20the latest evidence of the government's struggle to accommodate the
- 29:23nearly fifty thousand immigrants currently detained by ICE. A nationwide
- 29:28uptick and arrest amid President Donald Trump's crackdown on illegal
- 29:33emigration has led to many detention facilities reaching or exceeding capacity,
- 29:39with reports of people sleeping on floors and going days
- 29:42without proper medical attention. The Post reporting has shown to
- 29:47meet Vodozart tom Holman's goal of one hundred thousand detention
- 29:52beds ices contracting with county jails and paying millions of
- 29:56dollars to reopen shuttered private prisons. This month, it requested
- 30:01permission to bypass contracting rules to fast track new agreements
- 30:06for private facilities in California, Michigan and other states, citing
- 30:11the Southern voter emergency and the urgent need to detain
- 30:16aliens at large that posed threats to national security and
- 30:20public safety. At chrome, immigrant detainees were already being held
- 30:25in rooms that were never designed for long term detention.
- 30:29Waiting hours to use the bathrooms or see their lawyers,
- 30:33and going weeks without showers, according to interviews with emigration
- 30:37attorneys and advocates who have visited the facility. Reports about
- 30:42these conditions led a group of post Democrats to write
- 30:45a letter to Homeland Security Secretary Christy L. Non, urging
- 30:50her too provide Congress with the detailed plan for how
- 30:54DHS will restore humane conditions for detained migrants and provide
- 30:59trains perisy in detention operations. Wilson, one of the signatories
- 31:05of the April eighth letter, said she arranged her visit
- 31:08to Chrome about two weeks ago to see the conditions
- 31:11and meet with some of her constituents being held there,
- 31:15including a foreign barn Us of Florida University of Florida
- 31:19student who was reportedly arrested for driving with an expired
- 31:23license and vehicle registration. Most of the people who I saw,
- 31:28and most of the people we ran into, are not criminals.
- 31:32They are just people who have been here working and
- 31:34are undocumented. That's the sad part about it, Wilson said.
- 31:39The congresswoman said she could smell fresh paint during her visit,
- 31:43which she took as a sign that the facility had
- 31:46prepared for her arrival. ICE representatives told of the constituents
- 31:50she planned to meet with, including the University of Florida's
- 31:54student we're no longer being hosed at the facility. Chrome,
- 31:59a former military base reopened as an emigration detention center
- 32:03during the nineteen eighties. ICE oversees the facility's operations and
- 32:08relies on private contractors for services, including guards. It's difficult
- 32:13to know which ICE detention centers are at or over
- 32:17capacity because the government does not share day to day
- 32:21population numbers for individual facilities. Based on the figures it
- 32:26does report averages covering the entire physical year. Since October first,
- 32:32Chrome and at least four the ICE facilities already have
- 32:35a higher average daily population than their contracted capacities. ICE
- 32:41holds migrants in at least one hundred and forty two facilities,
- 32:45up from one hundred and fifteen when Trump took office,
- 32:49according to reports on the agency's website. In a statement
- 32:53to the Post last week, I said it has increased
- 32:56its available detention capacity to operate fifty nine thousand, nine
- 33:02hundred and sixteen beds. Nets were quied with the time
- 33:07to say whether this figure includes newly contracted facilities that
- 33:10have yet to open. Trump set a goal of detaining
- 33:14thirty thousand migrants at the Guantanamo Bay Naval Station, but
- 33:19so far the facility has been used only sparingly. Sidelike
- 33:24images revealed that there were about one hundred and ninety
- 33:27five tents on the base. In March, Europe backs Ukraine
- 33:33while still easing it toward the US peace deal with
- 33:37its strong public support of Ukraine. Europe seeks to give
- 33:41Zelensky some space in the face of US demands while
- 33:45still urging compromises, and there is a picture of British
- 33:50Prime Minister kir Starmer addressing the crew of British aircraft
- 33:55carrier HMS Prince of Wales in front of an F
- 33:59thirty five fighter aircraft in the hangar of the aircraft carrier.
- 34:06By Steve Hendrix and Shouvon O'Grady out of London. European
- 34:12leaders are straining to maintain a delicate diplomatic balance his
- 34:16attempts to reach a peace deal in Ukraine near a
- 34:19critical junctup expressing full throated backing for Ukrainian President Volodimir
- 34:25Zelenski even as they try to edge him closer to
- 34:29accepting some of the controversial terms being pushed by President
- 34:33Donald Trump. French President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister
- 34:38Keir Starmer in particular have backed Zelensky's demands for an
- 34:43unconditional cease file, which macarl said this week the Kriminlin
- 34:48must accept to date. President Russian President Vladimir Putin, who
- 34:54won Friday, met for roughly three hours with Trump's Special
- 34:57envoy Steve Whitkoff, has rejected a bull truths. Europe is
- 35:02also supporting Zelynxi's insistence that a deal must include significant
- 35:07security guarantees for Ukraine. This deadfast support for Ukraine has
- 35:12given Key, which is reluctant to set off a new
- 35:15round of tensions with Washington, so much needed space to
- 35:18push back on the White House. The support comes even
- 35:22as Europe acknowledges privately that it will not be able
- 35:25to fully make up for US support if the White
- 35:28House pulls the plug on Ukraine. Europe this week proposed
- 35:33a new set of terms to counter a US proposal
- 35:36given to Ukraine last week, which have been described as
- 35:39the final US offer for a deal. Those terms were
- 35:43widely viewed by Ukrainians and Europeans as heavily favoring Russia.
- 35:49The deal would have involved US recognition of Russia's illegal
- 35:53annexation of Crimea and the handover of Moscow. Handover too
- 35:59Moscow of the areas it controls in exchange for stopping
- 36:03further attacks, as well as the immediate lifting of sanctions
- 36:08on Russia. European leaders, who were set to host high
- 36:13level talks in London on Wednesday before two of three
- 36:17top US officials dropped out, added many different elements to
- 36:21the deal, including a full cease fire to start and
- 36:25robot security guarantees specifically from the United States. Europe also
- 36:31wants frozen Russian assets to fund reconstruction in Ukraine and
- 36:35only the gradual lifting of sanctions on Moscow if the
- 36:39peace deal is honored. The details of both office were
- 36:43first reported by Ruters on Friday or Routers on Friday
- 36:48that Washington Post confirmed their accuracy, with two officials briefed
- 36:51on negotiations. Europe's counter offer represents a broader fear across
- 36:57the continent than an unpredictable White House could suddenly cancel
- 37:01all support to Ukraine, sending Europe scrambling to help Ukraine
- 37:05stave off the Russian advance on its own. Despite widespread
- 37:10European support for Kiev's cause, Europe is not immediately able
- 37:16to replace the flow of all weaponry and intelligence that
- 37:19Ukraine needs to avoid major battle theo losses. Europe would
- 37:24especially struggle to replace the United States air defense systems
- 37:28that are the most effective and intercepting Russian missiles. Official
- 37:33said Ukraine is already without adequate supplies to defended cities,
- 37:38as demonstrated and deadly attacks from Kiev, Sumi, Kirivri and
- 37:44other major cities in recent weeks for Europe and Ukraine.
- 37:48One Western official said it is not only reasonable but
- 37:52necessary to push back on some elements of the US proposal,
- 37:56as it gives Ukraine practically very little and Russia a lot.
- 38:02European officials are trying to edge Washington toward a more
- 38:06reasonable agreement for Ukraine and to sign into the ID
- 38:10onto the idea that a ceasefire is an essential for
- 38:13a step. Calls for such as ceasefire were amplified after
- 38:18Russian Mischel strike hit an apartment building in Kiev on Thursday,
- 38:22killing at least twelve people. Written Starmer has pushed back
- 38:27on Trump's efforts to pin snags in the peace process
- 38:31on Ukraine, and he has refused to endorse any formal
- 38:35recognition of CRIMEA as Russian written also announced Thursday a
- 38:39new round of sanctions on Russia, banning the transfer of
- 38:43soft of energy, software, and even video game controllers that
- 38:48can be used to pilot drones. Mediators are struggling to
- 38:52keep the sides talking. On the Ukrainian side, the key
- 38:56requirements of any deal are strong security guarantees and minimizing
- 39:01any territorial concessions. We're trying to find a very narrow
- 39:07landing strip here, said one diplomat directly involved in discussions, who,
- 39:12like others interviewed for this article, spoke on the condition
- 39:15of anonymity to discuss sensitive deliberations. We have to avoid
- 39:21a position where Ukrainian red lines are so breached they
- 39:25walk away. We think we're getting there. An official briefed
- 39:29on the talks in Ukraine is worried about what the
- 39:33US will do. Europeans see Moscow's influence in Washington and
- 39:37its tendency to make ancient territory claims to justify modern
- 39:42military aggression as a looming threat. Maybe it sounds like
- 39:47old fair tales to some Americans that here in Europe
- 39:50it means that Russia has not forgotten how to divide.
- 39:55Europeans help Ukraine a lot, but they an't worried too,
- 39:59the officials said. At the same time, Europeans are urging
- 40:03Zelensky to acknowledge the likelihood that Ukraine will have to
- 40:07give up territory as part of an accord. They made
- 40:10progress in that effort Wednesday. One official said there is
- 40:14a growing sense among negotiators that Ukraine may be willing
- 40:18to endure effective Russian control of Crimea if KIV is
- 40:22not required to recognize it legally. Many Ukrainians do not
- 40:27want to rule like the possibility of retaking the territory
- 40:30even in the distant future, but even such a compromise
- 40:35remains distasteful to Ukraine, which sees it as setting a
- 40:39dangerous precedent for Putin to expect eventual similar recognition for
- 40:43other Ukrainian regions he has illegally seized. The official briefed
- 40:49on the talk said Europe is trying to help engage
- 40:52everyone with trunk normally and speed up their military production,
- 40:57but it takes time. That while US support is necessary.
- 41:02It doesn't mean that Ukraine will accede to Russian demands
- 41:07because Americans are blackmailing if they won't help, But all
- 41:12sides are confronting the reality that sustaining the fight will
- 41:15be significantly harder without directive American support. We urgently need
- 41:21to maintain and develop transatlantic solidarity and cooperation. From a
- 41:26geopolitical and economic standpoint, the US is truly an indispensable
- 41:32country for Europe and Ukraine, said Olinskander Marizoko, a top
- 41:38Ukrainian parliamentarian. Still, many in Europe have worn that Washington
- 41:44is pursuing a policy of appeasement. Did that end? A
- 41:49criminin aid on Friday set after Putin's meeting with Utkoff
- 41:53that Moscow and Washington were closer together not only on
- 41:57Ukraine but also in a number of other international issues.
- 42:02The aid Uri Yushakov told reporters that the discussion is
- 42:06centered in part on restarting direct negotiations between Russia and Ukraine,
- 42:11that there was no indication that would happen immediately. Wickcoff's
- 42:17team did not immediately provide a redate of the meeting.
- 42:20Trump declared on social media that success seems to be
- 42:25in the future, though support for Ukraine has created among
- 42:29many Republicans as Trump has tightened his control over the party.
- 42:33One GOP leader, Senator Chuck Grassley of Iowa, warn the
- 42:37President on Friday that Putin is playing America as a patsy,
- 42:42imploring him to enact the toughest sanctions on the Russian leader.
- 42:48In Europe, some officials called for more aggressive response to
- 42:52the terms Trump is fishing on Ukraine, which conservative German
- 42:56lawmaker Rodrik Kisweta described as a deed of surrender. Gabrielius
- 43:03land Burgus, a former foreign minister of Lithuania, said European
- 43:08countries should immediately launch new funding for weapons and license
- 43:13European weapons systems to Ukraine's growing defense industry. He also
- 43:18called for the European Union to fast track Ukraine's application
- 43:22to join the body and set specific target dates. We
- 43:27have to resist. If this offer is really is take
- 43:31or leave it, we have to leave it, Landspurgus said
- 43:35on a bench outside his destroyed apartment in Kiev on Thursday.
- 43:40Anton Dubnyono, thirty four, sat with what little he had
- 43:46salvaged his two cats, dog and computer after a Russian
- 43:50missile struck the building next door, collapsing his walls. He
- 43:54watched rescue workers rush to pro victims from the drubble.
- 43:59By days in twelve of his neighbors had been declared dead.
- 44:04Europeans should realize. Dubuenot said that if they don't stop
- 44:08the war now, this is going to be them in
- 44:12a couple of years. Video cast dote on Ed Martin's
- 44:19apology for praising Nazi's sympathizer, Trump's picked for top DC
- 44:25federal prosecutor, said he didn't know about the man's statements,
- 44:29but Martin had discussed the anti Semitism allegations in podcast
- 44:36by Spencer s. Hssou and Tom Jackman Antwerim. DC US
- 44:42attorney Ed Martin apologized this week for praising a pardoned
- 44:47January sixth, twenty twenty one, Capitol riot defendant who supported
- 44:51Nazi ideology and photographed himself posing as an Adolf Hitler,
- 44:57saying he didn't know about the man's extremisty statements, but
- 45:01in videos and podcast Martin has defended the man since
- 45:05at least twenty twenty three, calling him a friend who
- 45:08was slurred and smeared by anti Semitism allegations. Timothy Hale
- 45:15Cusanelli thirty five, was one of the first Capital Riot
- 45:19defendants charged and one of the first to enter the
- 45:22building through a smashed window. Court filings outlined his history
- 45:27of alleged antisemitic statements, post and infinity for Hitler. At
- 45:33the same time, Martin was a conservative activist and a
- 45:37January sixth stopped the steel fundraiser and organizer. He defended
- 45:43riot defendants in court on his podcast and throw a
- 45:46nonprofit led by Hale Cassinelli's aunt. Now he's working as
- 45:51DC's top prosecutor and his president, Donald Trump's pick to
- 45:56remain in that role. Neither Martin's office. A lawyer for
- 46:01Hale Casinelli commented Friday for this article, and Hale Casinelli
- 46:06did not respond to her request for comment. But in
- 46:09remarks published Thursday by The Ford, a Jewish publication, Martin
- 46:14apologized for praising Hale Cusinelli as an extraordinary man an
- 46:19extraordinary leader while presenting him with an honorary award for
- 46:23Martin's nonprofit group on August fourteenth at Trump's golf club
- 46:28in Bedminster, New Jersey. I'm sorry, Martin told The Ford,
- 46:34I denounce everything about what that guy said, everything about
- 46:38the way he talked, and all as I've now seen it.
- 46:40At the time, I didn't know it. Six weeks before
- 46:44the award ceremony, however, Martin interviewed Hale Casinelli about the
- 46:49allegations and defended him in a more than an hour
- 46:52long episode of his Pro America Report podcast, which he
- 46:56hosted from twenty twenty until early this year. A video
- 47:00of the episode was posed to July second on a
- 47:04video sharing platform called Rumble. In your case, they used
- 47:10your phone and took a photo and leaked a photo
- 47:12to say, ah, look, maga, people are Anni cemented, Martin said,
- 47:20you had a mustache shaved in a way that you
- 47:22looked vaguely like Hitler and making jokes about it. Again.
- 47:26You know, not your best moment, but not illegal. Martin
- 47:31added that he knew of the allegations against tail Cusinelli
- 47:34close to when he was charged on January fifteenth, twenty
- 47:38twenty one. When I think of this case, tim when
- 47:41it was first ongoing, I thought, Wow, it's almost impossible
- 47:46to sort of recover from that pale. Casanelli defended himself,
- 47:51noting that his mother has some Jewish ancestry. I'm not
- 47:55an Rian like the government with all edge, he told Martin.
- 48:00Hale Casanelli told the FBI he was not a Nazi
- 48:03or white supremaist. Martin in twenty twenty one began serving
- 48:08as one of three top officers of a nonprofit led
- 48:11by Hale Casanelli's aunt, Cynthia Hughes, which advocated and raised
- 48:16money for people charged with crimes related to the January
- 48:20sixth Capital riot. Tax records showed. Martin has told the
- 48:24Senate he stepped down early this year. He also spoke
- 48:28frequently with Hughes, posting her on his hot podcast more
- 48:32than a dozen times since twenty twenty one. Martin's attempt
- 48:37to distance himself from Hale Cousinelli came as Democrats have
- 48:42attacked their relationship, demanding a hearing and floor boats to
- 48:47force GOP leaders to decide how much time in political
- 48:50capital to spend on the nomination. It is well documented
- 48:55that Ed Martin is a Donald Trump loyalist who has
- 48:57embraced a Nazi sympathizer and attacked law enforcement who kept
- 49:02lawmakers in staff safe during the January sixth insurrection. Senator
- 49:07Dick Durbin of Illinois, the number two Senate Democrat and
- 49:11the top Democrat of Theditiary Committee, said in a statement
- 49:15last week before his announcement Wednesday that he will not
- 49:18seek re election. Durbin has said Martin's shocking conduct regarding
- 49:24Haile Cucinelli necessitates sworn testimony before Martin's interim appointment expires
- 49:31May twentieth, and compounds questions about his prosecutorial temperament that
- 49:37had been raised by his initial omissions of hundreds of
- 49:40his appearance on far right in Russia's state media outlets
- 49:45from committee disclosure statements, Hail Cucinelli, an army reservists found
- 49:51guilty of misdemeanor trespassing and disorderly conduct in the capital riot,
- 49:58was described by prosecutors subscribing to Nazi sympathize ideologies, a
- 50:05central theme in court filings in his widely reported case.
- 50:09At the time of his arrest, he was a civilian
- 50:12security contractor at a naval weapons station in New Jersey,
- 50:16where all but ten of forty four colleagues interviewed by
- 50:19Navy investigators described him as having extremist or radical views
- 50:25pertaining to the Jewish people, minorities, and women, and his
- 50:29phone contained many examples of anti Semitic and racist content.
- 50:34According to a government court filing that March one, Siala
- 50:39told investigators that he heard Hail Kusnelli say that if
- 50:43he were a Naxi, he would kill all the Jews
- 50:46and eat them for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. According to
- 50:49a court filing, a search of his home turned up
- 50:52copies of Hitler's autobiography Main Komf and The Turner Diaries,
- 50:58an influential nineteen seventy eight novel The right wing Extremist,
- 51:02among hundreds of books. Statements and actions like yours make
- 51:07Jewish people less safe and less confident they can participate
- 51:12as equal members of our society. A federal judge appointed
- 51:16by Trump said that Halo Cusinelli's sentencing hearing in December
- 51:20September twenty twenty two, US District Judge Trevor N. Macbadden
- 51:25kept the jury from hearing allegations of anti semitism, but
- 51:29called Hale Cusinelli's testimony that he didn't realize Congress sat
- 51:34in the Capitol Building a visible lot. Video evidence showed
- 51:39he was among the first rioters to enter the building
- 51:42through a smashed window and was part of a group
- 51:45that overwhelmed police in its lower level crypt Martin on
- 51:50his podcast defended hal Cusinelli, interviewing him several times between
- 51:54Jane twenty twenty two and October twenty twenty four. Martin
- 51:58has said his guest was only charged by prosecutors with
- 52:01a felony count of obstructing an official preceding of Congress.
- 52:06He served nearly three years in prison before the Supreme
- 52:09Court overturned that, leaving him guilty of only misdemeanors. He
- 52:14was among the nearly sixteen hundred Capital Riot Defender's defendants
- 52:19pardoned by Trump on January twentieth. In the July podcast,
- 52:25Martin agreed when Haile Custnelli said he was a victim
- 52:28of a smear campaign and described him as a friend
- 52:32over the last few years. Hale Cusnelli went on later
- 52:36to the podcast to suggest that January sixth was an
- 52:39attempted color revolution of the US military and a staged
- 52:44fake insurrection. The truth is that those in law enforcement
- 52:49and military, such as the DoD, the DHS, what have you,
- 52:53they're probably the ones who were involved in orchestrating January sixth,
- 52:57hal Custinelli told Martin in the September episode, Martin was
- 53:02fonded by alluding to the mystery of who placed two
- 53:05pipe bombs on Capitol Hill before the riot. There are
- 53:08other signs that Martin has known of at least some
- 53:11of the allegations against Hao Cucinelli. In podcast in September
- 53:15twenty twenty three and January twenty twenty four, Martin said
- 53:19hal Cucinelli was slurred and smeared. The nonprofit Hughes Advocacy Foundation,
- 53:26for which Martin served as director under Hale Cusinelli's aunt,
- 53:30has a Patriot Freedom Project website that raised money to
- 53:34support and defend January six political prisoners. The site has
- 53:40a page dedicated to news about hal Cusinelli's case, including
- 53:44a July twenty twenty one article headlined the Government's case
- 53:48against a White Supremacist, which argued that Whiley's actions might
- 53:53not be the easiest to defend, they were not criminal.
- 53:57In the forward article, Martin now that he would have
- 54:01known better than to anna hail Cucinelli, but he added,
- 54:06I certainly didn't know all the terrible things that he
- 54:08said and how he had acted. I think that's terrible,
- 54:11and I denotes it completely. I hate it. I hate
- 54:14that it happened. Martin told the Ford he's advising Leo Terrell,
- 54:19head of a Trump Justice Department task force to combat
- 54:23anti Semitism, and said he was behind the idea of
- 54:26visiting ten universities for potential civil rights violations. Don't think
- 54:32I'll have time to finish this, but I'll start with
- 54:35Dad was a football star Until Dad was a monster.
- 54:41Corn Brown's football life descended into illness and violence, leaving
- 54:45his daughter searching for answers by Kent babb Out of
- 54:49Anna Arbor, Michigan. By the time her dad visited last year,
- 54:54Jaden Brown had gotten used to the blank spaces in
- 54:57her family story. There were hazing memories, strangers, recognitions, photographs
- 55:03of a vibrant man she had only heard about it.
- 55:07Want to watch the NFL game tonight? She had recently
- 55:10texted him. No response, just to ghost on. The contact
- 55:15labeled Papa staring back wearing May's in blue. Hi Daddy,
- 55:20she wrote the next day, question mark, question question mark.
- 55:23She texted. After that, Jaden's older brother and sister had
- 55:27quit trying. He's gone, they would say. Melissa and their
- 55:31mother implored Jaden to move on too and stop asking
- 55:35painful questions. You don't need to know, Melissa said. But Jaden,
- 55:39just twenty two, struggled to accept the disconnect between the
- 55:43dad she knew in the man everyone else described. She
- 55:46had attended her dad's Alma Mata, Michigan, and occasionally descended
- 55:50into internet wormholes to learn what she could. In pictures,
- 55:55he was smiling and forever young. In videos, he was
- 55:58an All Big ten defensive back who played eight years
- 56:01in the NFL. In articles, he was a rising star
- 56:04and coaching. But there was more. Hospitalized after standoff, one
- 56:10of the stories read a self inflicted gunshot need another
- 56:14read the same type of brain trauma. According to yet another,
- 56:20as Dave Durson, they agreed to have dinner when he
- 56:24was in Annau for a friend's memorial service. As it
- 56:27had approached, James's mind raced with the usual questions. Why
- 56:31had he forgotten her birthday? How did former teammates bring
- 56:35out a version of him that his own children never could,
- 56:39and what really happened in New England? I still get
- 56:42scared of making him upset, she said the morning of
- 56:45the service, sitting in the Nnnover coffee shop in her
- 56:48Michigan tennis sweats her curly hair scrunched into a head van.
- 56:53That afternoon, she changed into a black dress and heels.
- 56:56Before leaving to pick up her dad. She stared at
- 56:59Kiar told a nearby hotel. Her dad climbed down and
- 57:03they set up for a chrysaler's symptom. He said nothing,
- 57:06and for the moment Jaden did the same. There was
- 57:09so much he wanted to ask him, even as everyone
- 57:12insisted the truth would hurt too much. And with that
- 57:16infanted day's reading of The Washington Post on April twenty
- 57:20sixth of twenty twenty five. Please listening to continued programming
- 57:26and radio. I have a good weekend. Bye,
