- 0:00Speaker 1: Chapter six. Krishna, therefore, who doeth work rightful to do,
- 0:08Speaker 1: not seeking gain from work? That man o prince is
- 0:12Speaker 1: Sanyasi and Yogi, both in one, and he is neither
- 0:17Speaker 1: who lights not the flame of sacrifice, nor setteth hand
- 0:20Speaker 1: to task. Regard as true renouncer him that makes worship
- 0:26Speaker 1: by work, For who renounceth not works, not as Yogin,
- 0:31Speaker 1: so is that well said by works, the votary doth
- 0:34Speaker 1: rise to saint, and saintship is the ceasing from all works.
- 0:39Speaker 1: Because the perfect Yogin acts, but acts unmoved by passions
- 0:44Speaker 1: and unbound by deeds, setting result aside. Let each man
- 0:50Speaker 1: raise the self by soul, not trample down his self,
- 0:54Speaker 1: since soul that is self's friend, may grow self's foe.
- 0:59Speaker 1: Soul is self's friend when self doth rule over self,
- 1:03Speaker 1: but self turns enemy. If soul's own self hate self
- 1:08Speaker 1: as not itself. The sovereign soul of him, who live,
- 1:13Speaker 1: self governed and at peace, is centered in itself, taking
- 1:17Speaker 1: alike pleasure and pain, heat, cold, glory and shame. He
- 1:23Speaker 1: is the Yogi. He is Yukta, glad with joy of
- 1:27Speaker 1: light and truth, dwelling apart upon a peak, with senses subjugate.
- 1:33Speaker 1: Where to the cloud, the rock, the glistering gold, show
- 1:37Speaker 1: all as one. By this sign is he known, being
- 1:41Speaker 1: of equal grace to comrades, friends, chance comers, strangers, lovers, enemies,
- 1:47Speaker 1: aliens and kinsmen, loving all alike, evil or good sequestered.
- 1:54Speaker 1: Should he sit steadfastly, meditating, solitary, his thoughts controlled, his
- 2:00Speaker 1: passions laid away, quit of belongings, in a fair still spot,
- 2:05Speaker 1: having his fixed abode not too much raised, nor yet
- 2:10Speaker 1: too low. Let him abide his goods a cloth, a
- 2:14Speaker 1: deer skin, and the cusa grass. There, setting heart his
- 2:19Speaker 1: mind upon the one restraining heart and senses, silent calm.
- 2:24Speaker 1: Let him accomplish yoga and achieve pureness of soul, holding
- 2:30Speaker 1: immovable body and neck and head, his gaze absorbed upon
- 2:34Speaker 1: his nose, end wrapped from all around, tranquil in spirit,
- 2:39Speaker 1: free of fear, intent upon his Brahmacharya, vow devout, musing
- 2:45Speaker 1: on me, lost in the thought of me, that Yogan
- 2:50Speaker 1: so devoted, so controlled, comes to the piece beyond my peace,
- 2:55Speaker 1: the peace of high Nirvana. But for earth needs religion.
- 3:01Speaker 1: Is not his who too much fasts or too much feasts,
- 3:06Speaker 1: nor his who sleeps away in idle mind, nor his
- 3:10Speaker 1: who wears to waste his strength and vigils. Nay Arjuna
- 3:14Speaker 1: call that the true piety which most removes earth, aches
- 3:18Speaker 1: and ills. Where one is moderate in eating and in resting,
- 3:22Speaker 1: and in sport, measured in wish and act, sleeping betimes,
- 3:27Speaker 1: waking betimes for duty. When the man so living centers
- 3:33Speaker 1: on his soul the thought straightly, restrained, untouched internally by
- 3:38Speaker 1: stress of sense, then is he yuctah see steadfast a
- 3:43Speaker 1: lamp burns sheltered from the wind. Such is the likeness
- 3:48Speaker 1: of the jogi's mind, shut from sense, storms in burning
- 3:52Speaker 1: bright to heaven. When mind broods placid, soothed with holy want,
- 3:58Speaker 1: when self contemplates self and in itself hath comfort when
- 4:03Speaker 1: it knows the nameless joy beyond all scope of sense,
- 4:07Speaker 1: revealed to soul only to soul, and knowing wavers not
- 4:13Speaker 1: true to the farther truth. When holding this, it deems
- 4:18Speaker 1: no other treasure comparable. But harbored there cannot be stirred
- 4:23Speaker 1: or shook by any gravest grief. Call that state peace,
- 4:28Speaker 1: that happy severance yoga. Call that man the perfect yogin
- 4:34Speaker 1: steadfastly the will must toil thereto till efforts end in ease,
- 4:40Speaker 1: and thought has passed from thinking, shaking off all longings
- 4:45Speaker 1: bred by dreams of fame and gain, shutting the doorways
- 4:49Speaker 1: of the senses close with watchful ward. So step by
- 4:54Speaker 1: step it comes to gift of peace assured and heart assuaged,
- 4:59Speaker 1: when the mind mind dwell, self wrapped, and the soul
- 5:02Speaker 1: broods cumberless. But as often as the heart breaks wild
- 5:08Speaker 1: and wavering from control, so often let him recurb it,
- 5:13Speaker 1: let him rein it back to the soul's governance. For
- 5:17Speaker 1: perfect bliss grows only in the bosom, tranquilized, the spirit, passionless,
- 5:22Speaker 1: purged from a fence, vowed to the infinite, He who
- 5:27Speaker 1: thus vows his soul to the supreme soul, quitting sin,
- 5:32Speaker 1: passes unhindered to the enlistless of unity with Brahma. He
- 5:37Speaker 1: so vowed, so blended, sees the life's soul resident in
- 5:42Speaker 1: all things living, and all living things in that life's
- 5:46Speaker 1: soul contained. And whoso thus discerneth me in all and
- 5:51Speaker 1: all in me, I never let him go, nor looseneth
- 5:55Speaker 1: he hold upon me, but dwell where he may what
- 6:00Speaker 1: his life in me? He dwells and lives because he
- 6:04Speaker 1: knows and worships me, who dwell in all which lives,
- 6:08Speaker 1: and cleaves to me in all, Arjuna. If a man
- 6:13Speaker 1: sees everywhere taught by his own similitude, one life, one essence,
- 6:18Speaker 1: and the evil and the good, hold him a yogi
- 6:21Speaker 1: yea well perfected Arjuna, slayer of Madu. Yet again this
- 6:29Speaker 1: yog this peace derived from equanimity made known by THEE.
- 6:34Speaker 1: I see no fixity therein no rest, because the heart
- 6:39Speaker 1: of men is unfixed. Krishna rash tumultuous, wilful, and strong.
- 6:44Speaker 1: It were all one, I think to hold the wayward
- 6:47Speaker 1: wind as tame man's heart. Krishna hero long armed beyond denial.
- 6:55Speaker 1: Hard man's heart is to restrain and wavering. Yet may
- 7:00Speaker 1: it grow restrained by habit, Prince, by want of self command?
- 7:05Speaker 1: This yogi, I say, cometh not lightly to the ungoverned ones.
- 7:10Speaker 1: But he who will be master of himself shall win
- 7:13Speaker 1: it if he stoutly strive there too, Arjuna, In what
- 7:20Speaker 1: road goeth he who, having faith fails Krishna in the striving,
- 7:25Speaker 1: falling back from holiness, missing the perfect rule? Is he
- 7:29Speaker 1: not lost straying from Brahma's light. Like the vain cloud
- 7:33Speaker 1: which floats TwixT earth and heaven, when lightning splits it
- 7:37Speaker 1: and it vanisheth. Fain would I hear thee answer me herein,
- 7:41Speaker 1: Since Krishna, none save thou, can clear the doubt. Krishna,
- 7:47Speaker 1: he is not lost, Thou, son of Prita. No nor
- 7:51Speaker 1: earth nor heaven is forfeit even for him, because no
- 7:55Speaker 1: heart that holds one right desire treadeth the road of law.
- 8:00Speaker 1: He who should fail desiring righteousness cometh at death unto
- 8:05Speaker 1: the region of the just, dwells there measureless years, and
- 8:09Speaker 1: being born anew, beginneth life again in some fair home
- 8:14Speaker 1: amid the mild and happy. It may chance he doth
- 8:18Speaker 1: descend into a yogan's house on Virtue's breast, but that
- 8:22Speaker 1: is rare. Such birth is hard to be obtained on
- 8:25Speaker 1: this earth. Chief, so hath he back again what heights
- 8:29Speaker 1: of heart he did achieve, And so he strives anew
- 8:33Speaker 1: to perfectness with better hope, Dear Prince, for by the
- 8:37Speaker 1: old desire he is drawn on unwittingly and only to desire.
- 8:42Speaker 1: The purity of yoga is to pass beyond the Shabdebrahm,
- 8:46Speaker 1: the spoken vade. But being Yogi, striving strong and long,
- 8:52Speaker 1: purged from transgressions, perfected by births. Following on births, he
- 8:57Speaker 1: plants his feet at last upon the farther path. Such
- 9:01Speaker 1: an one ranks above ascetics, higher than the wise, beyond
- 9:05Speaker 1: achievers of vast deeds, be thou Yogi Arjuna, And of
- 9:11Speaker 1: such believe truest and best is he who worships me
- 9:15Speaker 1: with inmost soul stayed on my mystery. Here endeth Chapter
- 9:22Speaker 1: six
