- 0:01All right then, let's do it.
- 0:03[upbeat music] Yeah, man Hey, man It is full spectrum cycling.
- 0:22This is show 315. Wow. Yeah, 315. Ides of March, my dad's birthday. Oh, right on. Uh, but- I didn't even look that up... yeah, it's, it's- I just didn't... yeah. No, we're not in March right now, though. No, no. Gotcha.
- 0:36But 315. Awesome. Uh, weekends were made for having fun. Oh-ho. Did we have fun last weekend? I f- yeah, yeah. The body is telling me so. Yeah, right? I, uh. Uh-oh. Oh, there they are. The crickets?
- 0:53The little crickets, they were there. Oh, yeah. They're gone now. Oh. Uh, yeah, yeah, yeah. River West 24 was this past Friday/Saturday. I am very glad the way it turned out. I had- I gotta, I gotta-...
- 1:08no obligations at all. Yeah, I gotta, I gotta find a, a happy medium in between the no obligation at all and the internal doing it solo obligation. Probably more self discipline. Sounds like a team.
- 1:23Sounds like you wanna be on a team. No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no. [laughs] No. As soon as I say that, it never works out. The, you, well, never works out, to, to me, in my head.
- 1:34[clears throat] I made a valiant effort Friday night not to imbibe too much in the beer, you know, festivities area, and it worked pretty well for the most part. I d- I did get tired, though, so I,
- 1:49I happened to take a nap right about the time it rained. That was pretty fortuitous. Ah, uh-huh. Uh, but yeah, otherwise pretty much 36 hours of being awake again.
- 1:59Yeah, I, uh, I stayed up for the, the bill shift over at, excuse me, over at, uh, Husky from 3:00 to 6:00 for the sunrise- Yep, yep... type thing, which was fun.
- 2:14It was, uh, Kevin and Jim Bay View, Bay Viewians. I probably should have remembered, that was basically at the same time as the checkpoint in Martin's basement. Right.
- 2:25I made a, a pit stop, and I was just like, "Well, I, I'm, uh, I'm- Did you go down into the- No. No, no, no... the void of hell down in there? Well, it was, you know- I was on my way.
- 2:34I was like, "I gotta go home and just take a nap." Yeah. And I did, and then- I, I did after that, basically. The, the guys from Floor Model were kind of... They were hosting it, but it was basically
- 2:45you come in there and you bang on some instruments for a couple of minutes, and- Mm-hmm... you know, some of the stuff sounded all right. I got a few...
- 2:51There'll, there will be at some point some video of it which I captured. Uh, uh, unfortunately, my plan to do a lot of video...
- 3:01Well, I did do a lot, but a lot of it was just from the bike, and you're like, "Yeah, well, you know, there's about a minute or two- Mm-hmm... of good stuff in that 20 minutes of riding." Right.
- 3:10So I, I didn't wanna sit there, 'cause I just went through all the Bikes, Boats and Goats video stuff we did last weekend. And, uh, so I, I used, uh, Insta360, uh- Mm...
- 3:23uh, those guys have an app that will AI edit for you. Mm-hmm. Not, not too bad, really.
- 3:29It's like it took 17 minutes and compressed it down into two minutes, and it picked out some good stuff from that, which s- saved me from having to watch 17 minutes worth of stuff to pick out stuff. So I don't know.
- 3:42I'm g- I'm, I'm not necessarily saying I'm gonna fully rely on their AI stuff, and then it throws some music at it, and they only have about, I don't know, 30 or 40.
- 3:53So pretty soon all your stuff's gonna sound the same if you find the one thing you like. But I just thought it was worth kind of seeing what it would do. Uh,
- 4:02besides hiring editors, uh, probably pretty inexpensive these days, if you can find them. Probably overseas, I would imagine. Over there.
- 4:12But, uh, you know, as far as the, uh, the video stuff, the, uh, Bikes, Boats and Goat, I, I did do... I think we had about, I had about four-plus hours, and I'm not gonna s- [laughs] Oh...
- 4:23sub- subject someone to four hours of just, you know, riding on the beach. Uh, that was over four days, though. Um- Which way do we go? Yeah. Yeah. Uh, [laughs] I forgot my bike. Yeah, yeah.
- 4:34Uh, so I, I compressed it down to about an hour of s- mostly watchable stuff, but then I also chopped it up into four days, so it's, you know, it's bite-sized pieces. Right on.
- 4:44Uh, there were some interesting stuff, some good visuals. I do need to work on the audio.
- 4:50As, as good a job as we do in the studio, I think, the audio on the road is harder to do, and I didn't get my fancy new thing before we left on the trip, so I couldn't use it. B- b- but my m- Yeah, so-...
- 5:03I would, you know-... me, me, me, me, me, me, me, me, me, me... I'm gonna put, I'm gonna put one per day up on fatbike.com, and, you know- [laughs]... watch them or don't. Don't complain about the audio.
- 5:11I already know, and if some- I have just told you... if some clown asks about it that doesn't, you know, listen to the show, then it's like, you think I don't hear that? [laughs] You think I'm deaf? You know? Stop it.
- 5:25Oh. [laughs] Did you take a photo of that yet? No. No, no. We gotta have a, gotta have a photo. Yeah. Michael got his Atari- My Atari toy... 2600 watch. Did you just get it today? Monday.
- 5:42Oh, okay, so you've had a chance to r- run it through its paces a little bit? Yeah, yeah. The band didn't want to, uh, stay on. It's a little remedial. I mean, it's just, it's a clever, it's a, a clever thing- Uh-huh...
- 5:54more than... It, it just- More than a, a useful thing? Kind of. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, it's got a good pedometer and heart rate monitor and calorie counter, whatever the frick that does, actually.
- 6:05But there's really no storage to it. Plus you already smashed your wise watch up, right? Oh, yes. Okay. Yeah. So this is the repla- hello. Boing. Boing. Hello. I wonder how I did that.
- 6:17You know, how, [laughs] how did I break up that thing too? So it's kind of the replacement for the pedometer and, but it doesn't, like, keep a record of it because there's no WiFi, there's no Bluetooth.
- 6:30Oh, you can't tap it into your P.ON? Mm, no. Okay. That's... It, it's like just a self-contained unit. Gotcha.
- 6:37But it doesn't house any storage or data, so it's like you have to pay attention to how many steps you did that day. I don't pay any attention to steps even though my stuff does remember it.
- 6:48[laughs] I just, out of curiosity, you know? I mean, that's what I dig about the Wise one where it was, "Hey, it can do da, da, da. Hey, how many did I do yesterday? Whoa, 17,000. That's insane." Yeah.
- 6:59That's, that's a good, that's a good chunk of walking. I'm at 9,000 today. 9069. 9069. Nice. Steps. 10,000 or 1,000 steps away from that 10,000 goal. The,
- 7:16uh, a- and this one defaulted to 5,000. Oh. Actually, I can do that simply. Good. Yeah. So. By getting out of the chair and going to the television. [laughs] Pretty much.
- 7:28Good thing I didn't get it over the weekend because there wasn't a lot of moving around after, [laughs] after the 24. Uh- But it's hard to keep it on, like, one... I like that face. Oh, yeah.
- 7:38But it kinda wants to change all the time. Is that, uh... Yeah. To that. Mm-hmm. And then it's like, oh, they got the Centipede and the Missile Command. Mm-hmm. The old-timey, the old-timey covers.
- 7:48I like the, I like the original Atari look. Yeah. And I, I like the- Okay... the little wood paneling. Wood. And it's got the Centipede if you wanna flip it around. 1983.
- 7:58And then they came with another one, I think- What?... for Missile Command. I don't know. 1983, I was, uh, 19 or 20 years old. And still playing Centipede, of course, because, well, started playing Centipede.
- 8:09Well, and the Centipede game on this one just keeps going. It just, it fires for you, and you just have to move your little dude back and forth, and forth and forth- Mm-hmm... and back.
- 8:17So it's remedial 2600 games- Sure... as remedial as the 2600 games were. Right. Yeah, so it's more of a slider and a button. Yeah. Missile Command is probably the most in- involved one. It looked... I, I saw it briefly.
- 8:32It looked pretty good. Yeah. Breakout, or Super Breakout mind you.
- 8:36For some reason, Garrett today was asking what we did when we cleaned the basement out, and where did we put the Wii games because they haven't been used in years.
- 8:46[laughs] I, uh, apparently he wanted some nostalgia, so it's like I- [laughs] Wendy knew where they were, so he got to have his friends over there and play Wii remembering their- Wii...
- 8:56remembering their youth these many five years [laughs] and six years ago. The video game exercise machine-ish- Oh, yeah... kinda thing... yeah, yeah, that's right. They did have the, the...
- 9:05I remember at my mom's, where she lives, it's a assisted liv- Yeah... well, she lives in an apartment, assisted living. There's, you know, um, uh, out the back door and the whatever.
- 9:13Uh, but they had a Wii, and then there was one dude there that just kept keeping it in his room. He wouldn't bring it back. [laughs] And he was like 85. It's like he's just a curmudgeon though.
- 9:22He's like, "I'm not giving it back." No. No, no, no. [laughs] You have to come and play tennis in my room. Yes. We're bowling- [laughs] Yeah, bowling in this house, or in this room.
- 9:31I went out to her place on, uh, Monday, got some plants she wanted to give me. That was nice. Uh, but yeah. Oh, and w- and, uh, I think I mentioned it maybe about the tree.
- 9:44Did I mention the tree in memory of my sister, or... My sister passed away a while back, and my mom wanted a tree. And she wanted a tree... It's actually a shrub, but there's a tree version called the Rose of Sharon.
- 9:58And, uh, we went to Stein/Hawk's Nursery, and they hadn't, they hadn't come in yet in May or whatever because it's a late blooming thing. Whatever. I learned more about them than I really wanna know.
- 10:09[laughs] But then, uh, around the time when they were supposed to be coming into the garden centers, I... was like June, mid-June or something, I decided to go out to Miner's- Right, yeah... on 76th Street.
- 10:22Uh, found a ton of them, very nice looking. Uh, these things don't actually bud until, like, right around now, uh, or even in, into, uh, into August and September. Uh, but the...
- 10:34Well, it's lucky we waited because they were, like, one-third to one-quarter the price as they were at the other nursery. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm, mm-hmm. Yeah. I mean, Miner's is huge. They're r- way into the, you know, the, uh,
- 10:48not corporate, what do you call it?
- 10:49You know, they got a corporate side of the selling stuff to big landscape companies and stuff, and apparently we reap the benefits of all that volume because I picked one up, threw it in the van, took it over there, and her groundskeeper guys that are at the place she's at planted it.
- 11:03Going great. First flower came out the other, couple days ago, big old, like, reddish pink. Beautiful. Beautiful. Nice. Yeah. Miner's
- 11:13was my, one of my babysitters growing up, Mary Miner, and then she ended up being, uh, my, uh, high school teacher at Pius. Wow. Huh. Yeah. Current, current, uh, current, current events in, in the history program.
- 11:27Right on. 35th anniversary, 35th anniversary, 35th year anniversary or reunion. That's the word I'm looking for. Of your- High schooling... graduation? Yeah. This year. Yeah. Well- Fun, fun, fun...
- 11:39have you remembered everything you learnt back then? Eh, I don't know. I'm gonna stop at left's. I mean, they're doing a in- you know, the informal one.
- 11:50I'm not gonna go on, "Hey, let's do the, uh, golf outing and the go to the..." I don't know. Yeah, no. I'm not...
- 11:56That's, you know, Charwood does that stuff too, and I went to the first one I'd gone to in whatever it was. But 35 is, like, one of the hot years, you know? Oh. It's not like, "Oh, hey, it's the 32nd year."
- 12:07Oh, yeah, pfft. Whatever. That's like the Harley m- it's like the Harley thing that came through- Sure... a couple weeks ago. It's like, well, it's the 127th. I mean, are we really cer- whatever the number is. Right.
- 12:17Are we really- Yeah. Why don't you wait till the 130th, and then the 150th will be the big thing. And then, you know, the company'll probably go under before that- [laughs]... I would imagine.
- 12:25Yeah, they- But- Yeah, uh, they, they took over the Veterans Park big time. I mean, they were, they were building that out for a couple weeks ahead of time.
- 12:35I don't know how I feel about all that, and the air show taking over the entire lakefront with all their b- paid for seating and stuff, and it's like- Ah, it should've been...
- 12:42I w- I thought it was gonna be- This is for the masses... on the same, I thought it was gonna be on the- This is for the masses... same damn weekend, and I'd been fine with that. Yeah.
- 12:48Get it all out of the way at one time. Get all of it. All of it. All Mm. Yes. Noise, noise, noise. Noise, noise, noise. [laughs] You're not gonna read it. Yeah, yeah, yeah. 15 bucks. Oh, boy. Uh- Yeah...
- 13:02did you- Like, every time you hear 15 bucks, you hear that. > > > Mm-hmm.
- 13:13[clears throat] What's th- that's the Mad Note. [coughs] [laughs] Uh, did you make it to either of Mike McAbee's shows? No, I didn't, damn it. I do not recall seeing you at either one. No, no, no, no.
- 13:23Uh, so that was one- That's the other thing, yeah, I know... well, that's one of the things that I would probably have changed or will change next year even, 'cause I want Mike to come back, 'cause he's fun.
- 13:33I would like it if he would come Friday and not do a show, and then do a Saturday morning show, 'cause that was pretty cool at Uptowner.
- 13:41But I didn't w- I mean, I didn't feel obligated, but it was kinda fun just to sit there- Yeah...
- 13:45and then it was, you know, two and a half hours are gone out of my 24 because I was sitting inside and outside of that place watching his show. And,
- 13:54you know, he doesn't come, uh, he, he may come through one other time a year or so. Um, and he brought, uh, he had a, an Excelsior, uh, m- I'll stay leading... an Excelsior bicycle from a long time ago.
- 14:08It were, we're not, I'm not sure when it's from. Pre-war, I would say. Um, and he did, uh, ride around town on that, and had some, you know, good things to say about all the things he saw.
- 14:19But, uh, yeah, I, I would not spend... And then another, uh, maybe hour and a half at the Uptowner show on Saturday because all the Iowa people were there and, and a bunch of them know him because he's from Iowa.
- 14:30Right, right. Yeah. So these are all the people that are staying at Tony's house, which by the way is where- Oh, yeah... where this thingy-majigger came from. Let's, uh, let's ring the bell- Oh...
- 14:39so I can- Because that- I'll take it off and you can talk about the beer, and then I'll talk about the, uh, this, the slap koozie or whatever they call this thing. Yep. Yeah. Distil Brewery. Brewery. Brewery.
- 14:53It's from Normal, Illinois. We've had this once before in the, uh- I've been down to Normal. Bloomington-Normal area. Yeah. You know, I saw this over at, uh, the casino at the sewer many years ago,
- 15:04and I think that's when I had grabbed it. So it's a West Coast style IPA. It's, it's good. Deadhead IPA. 7%, which is a little heavy.
- 15:13I mean, it does kinda drink that, but it's not- Like the bold colors and patterns of a tie-dye shirt, this West Coast style IPA is bursting with psychedelic hoppiness, fruity aromas, and balanced bitterness from Citra, Simcoe, and Chinook hops with a vintage malt backdrop.
- 15:31Cheers. Yeah. I- I was looking for a little more d- deadhead vibe... and it's not b- it's not too burpy. Not yet. No. No. And it's in the kick-ass black cans. I do, I don't know, I have a thing for black cans. Mm.
- 15:40Like Foggy Geezer and a few of the other ones that are in an all-black can. For sure. For sure. [clears throat] Ah. Yeah, that's good stuff. So I don't know what the deal with these things is.
- 15:52Apparently they're called slap somethingies. Slap koozies. Slap, slap koozie. Something of that nature. Anyway, the Iowa fellas, I think, uh, Jason gave this to me.
- 16:01Peace in Grease from Goldfinch Cyclery, which I believe is in Cedar Falls, or it could be Cedar Rapids. I'll have to look that up. It's one of the Cedars. It's Cedar somewhere in, uh, in central Iowa, and they were,
- 16:16they were kind enough to bring that along. I think they were on the RAGBRAI for a little bit. The RAGBRAI went, uh- It's a-... hit, hit a little Minnesota I hear...
- 16:24yeah, yeah, and I don't know if the, there was- Tim West, uh, made a notice- [laughs]... of that on the Face Place. Yeah. And, and like, no, not the first time ever. I do believe there was one year before.
- 16:35Um, Tim's been doing it as long as it's been done, I think. Right. I don't know if he's still- I, yeah, I would trust his wisdom and- Right... documentation of it... I don't know. Two people perished in the heat
- 16:44at least. Did they? Literally- Oh, shit... perished. Um, I don't know if any of them were unlucky enough to have done so in Minnesota though because wouldn't that be ironic? Mm-hmm. You know? It's like, oh.
- 16:57Oh, dun, dun, dun. I don't know. I mean, there's a lot of... Well, a lot of people pass away when it's 106, uh, heat index. Uh, one, a fella, uh, passed away on the Wausau 24 this year too. No shit. Yeah. Really?
- 17:10I didn't hear about that. Yeah. So, you know, I don't... Hey, folks, A, hydrate, B, know your limits, C, don't ride when it's 106 heat index out there if you don't have to.
- 17:20Um, but- Or at least have a hydration destination. Yeah, that's been so... Yeah. I guess I, I- 'Cause I did that a couple, like, weeks ago. It's like, "I should not go out in the world, but I do wanna stop at..."
- 17:33And someone's playing music- Sure... over on that Uptowner, and they weren't. [laughs] No. So there was no damn good payoff of it. Uh, yeah.
- 17:43Maybe it's 40 beers worth, and drinking water beer in Iowa, you hydrate enough possibly, 'cause I ne- I don't know, I never had a problem with it. But I, anyway, it's worth noting that, um, heat can kill, folks. Mm-hmm.
- 17:54That's what I'm saying.
- 17:55And, um, we did get, we did get the three minute, I think, maybe there was an extra minute or two at the beginning, but we had Mike McAbee was on it for a few days before he came here for the show and the 24, and he did his three-minute thing.
- 18:08So if you get a chance, uh, listen to his, m- m- my, heh, interview with him. It, it is on Full Spectrum Cycling. I also threw it up on Fatbike.com just 'cause, you know, I did. But it's, it's worth a listen, I think.
- 18:22He's, he's a very entertaining individual, even notwithstanding his show, which is pretty entertaining. Mm. He's just broadly knowledgeable and- Yeah... and yeah...
- 18:31I wanted to hit the, I wanted to hit the morning, uh, Uptowner show, but- I didn't- Yeah... I did not arise until about the noon, noon 30. Oh, oh. That's a good long one. Yeah. Well, it was, eh, about 7:00.
- 18:44Yeah, it was a good five-hour- I, well, I-... nap... I would... We could go in the other room. I don't have it set up anymore, but I brought my, my kick-ass Nemo air mattress, which on the Michigan trip, it was...
- 18:55It's, it's, like, this big and that tall. It's like, it's not compact at all, and it doesn't weigh nothing either. I th- it probably weighs three pounds, and I'm like, "Ah, I could have taken a lighter sleeping pad."
- 19:06And then when I got it set up and I'm on it, I'm like, "No way I'm gonna save a pound not to have this." Yeah. That's not for gram shaving. No. No way. It was... It's like a twin bed size thing. Hmm.
- 19:17But it's also insulated, so if it's cold out and blah, blah, blah. I didn't use it one night. The second night I didn't even take out my sleeping bag or that, 'cause it was like 72 degrees or something.
- 19:26[laughs] And we were on sand. I'm like, "Ooh." Ooh. "This is kinda like sleeping in a beanbag chair." [laughs] So it was, it was really nice, uh, not to, to worry about that, and I had the, the contingency plan. Mm-hmm.
- 19:38Uh, you'll see that in, uh, I think day two or day three once I get the- [coughs]... once I get the boat, bike, bikes, boat, and goats- Boat, bike... uh- Bike, bike... thing up on the old, uh... You'll see.
- 19:47I did a little interview in the tent of myself. I'm like, "Hi, you. How you doing?" I'm like, "Hey, how's it going? Oh, pretty good. How you doing?" [laughs] How very Megadeth of you. "Hello, me. It's nice to meet me."
- 19:57[laughs] Wow. Wow. Shazow. Um, right on. Uh, so yeah, Jinxx, so Jinxx:ie at Chill on the Hill. How was that? Yeah. That was fun. Uh, I, it's a three-piece. It always has a very kinda Go-Go's- Right... kinda cru- crust.
- 20:10Two, two women, two, two guys and a g- and a two gals and a guy. Exactly. Sorta Three's Company-like. Yeah. And the drummer looks... Every time reminds me of Nomad Sam. And this time more n- Come and knock on our door...
- 20:23mo- more so, 'cause he had the Hawaiian shirt on- Oh... and the hat and the long hair, and, uh, it was just, it- We'll be waiting for you... I can't get my head away. It... Like, once I...
- 20:31'Cause I'm always focusing on percussion, if I can. Sure. You know. Where the kisses are hers and hers and his. His. Three's Company, two. Okay. Ba-da, da-da. Da-da, da. There you go. But yeah.
- 20:43Um, and they reinforce it with the... Like, you know, people are like, "Encore." "Uh, no, no. We're done. We're done." And then it's like, "No, no, no." Then, and then sometimes...
- 20:54This was, like, an actual, like, "Oh, shit. Okay. We'll do one more song." 'Cause it's- 'Cause normally a lot of those are just so programmed into people. Like, no, this is a, okay, fake, fake walk off.
- 21:07Come back for more. Okay. One Mississippi, two. Let's just do this... Okay, this is our last song now. Okay. You know. More, more, uh...
- 21:14I gotta bring Mike up again, just because in, during the interview I asked him, it's like, "What can people expect when they go to a Mike Mackeby show? Is it, is it, like, always the same show?" He goes, "No."
- 21:26[laughs] It's like, he, because he's one guy, he doesn't have to, you know, they don't have to play together. You know what I... You know, it's like they don't do songs.
- 21:34He does songs, but he doesn't have to- It's all requests. I mean, well- He doesn't have to do them in order. Right. He doesn't have to do them, eh. He can interact with the crowd. He can interact with the venue.
- 21:42He can interact with the city. And, uh, no two shows are the same, so you should, you should feel privileged. Yeah. It's like a show just for you. I'd... Go see Mike. He's, he's all over the Midwest. He's in Wisconsin.
- 21:55He's in Iowa. He's in, you know... Yeah, Kansas. And you can try- Kansas... to stump the chef. I thought I could, but I didn't. Oh, no. It's on the playlist now. Oh, Muel Skinner is? It's on the playlist. Oh. Yeah.
- 22:05Well, I feel like I've accomplished something in my life then. Yeah, yeah. It was, it was... I don't know. Yeah. Yeah. He- 'Cause it wasn't, it wasn't the last time he was in town. [laughs] No, he was...
- 22:11Somebody, uh, somebody asked him for a song, and he was like, "Mm-mm-mm-mm-mm-mm-mm-ding-ding-mm-mm-mm, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah." Whatever it was, he was like- "Come and knock on my door"... "Yeah, I got this one.
- 22:20I got this one." [laughs] Give me the Three's Company theme. [coughs] So we did talk about Daikaiju today? No, we didn't. Did we? Uh, they attacked.
- 22:31They attacked, uh- I think, I think we were talking about the, uh- Oh, we-... the ride. Oh, the couple of- The, the potential of the ride. A couple days ago they were here in Milwaukee. They attacked Milwaukee.
- 22:41They attacked. Go. Uh, and I was like, "Eh, I'm so tired," because the weekend was rough and Monday was, like, recovery day. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. And I was like, "Well, if I can get a magic carpet ride, I'll go."
- 22:55You got a magic carpet ride. And then Jessica Toleman from Riverwest 24, you know, organizing crew people, had two free tickets, and she's like, "You want the tickets?" I'm like- No shit. Oh, yeah...
