- 0:05A shaggy dog TV story. Welcome to Mark and Pete, where
- 0:10at last, at last, we have television for dogs.
- 0:13We all love dogs, especially here on the Mark and Pete Show.
- 0:17We are Mark and Pete 2 blokes with half an opinion.
- 0:21Here's our first thought. The idea of TV for dogs may be a
- 0:26canine fad as the hounds fight tooth and claws, but the idea
- 0:32drives you barking mad, so it's best to just.
- 0:35Press Pause. Yes, well of course and you'll
- 0:39see if your little paws are out there, you may be watching
- 0:42YouTube Siesta Dog TV. Yes, a couple from Spain have
- 0:47decided that this is a good idea.
- 0:49Videos of dogs looking at all sorts of different doggy
- 0:53activities. There are cartoons and much fun
- 0:56to be played across the screen. Now Mr. Pete, you are a dog
- 1:00owner, you are a dog lover and you have been for many, many
- 1:03years. What say you about this idea to
- 1:06entertain your little pet? Now there's two sides to this
- 1:10Mark. This is a very serious issue.
- 1:12Of course. Yes, I do love dogs.
- 1:13I have a dog in the studio with me now, as you know, who's just
- 1:17in a siesta. He's sleeping nicely.
- 1:19Now the this particular dog and other dogs that I've owned, I
- 1:25would love, I'd love to them to have calming TV to reduce their
- 1:30anxiety, which is one way I think way.
- 1:33One reason for producing that's put forward to help them to
- 1:36sleep, to have a siesta. However, my dog pays absolutely
- 1:40no attention and none of the dogs I've owned have given any
- 1:43attention to screens. He just sees them as flickering
- 1:46lights. However, that doesn't mean that
- 1:49this wouldn't work because there's also in television,
- 1:53whether it's a YouTube channel or a conventional channel, you
- 1:57have sound as well. And he does respond to sound,
- 1:59particularly that of other animals, maybe some a cheerful
- 2:03little puppy dog sounds or sounds of a dog seeping and
- 2:07snoring, right might induce him to become.
- 2:09I think that would be more of an effect.
- 2:12It's the the the the I've noticed that The thing is, he
- 2:16doesn't respond to the visuals. A screen, it being flat just
- 2:21looks like, you know, some lights shining at him to the to
- 2:25the dog, but sounds he will respond to, particularly if he
- 2:30recognise a voice. So you could maybe have maybe be
- 2:35better for me to just record myself, say there's a good dog,
- 2:39go to sleep now. Yes, he's just responding now.
- 2:41There's a good dog, that sort of thing.
- 2:44Yes, well now here's a here's a little bit of interest.
- 2:47So a couple of years ago a study from Canine Behaviour Centre Yes
- 2:51at Queen's University Belfast looked at the reaction of 50
- 2:55dogs in a rescue centre to different screens.
- 2:59Now what it found was the dogs spent only 10.8% of the total
- 3:04available viewing time looking directly at the television
- 3:07monitor. Exactly, exactly my point.
- 3:09One of the the reporters said, and the researcher said the dogs
- 3:14in this investigating directly and relatively little attention
- 3:19towards the television monitor monitors and habituated to their
- 3:23presence with a short period of time, meaning it didn't hold
- 3:26their attention. Now there will be some points of
- 3:30difference here because as you say, when you look at a screen,
- 3:34it's not just the visual, it's the audio that comes through it.
- 3:38Now I think that the two really go in harmony for human beings,
- 3:42but for dogs we've got a different obviously experience
- 3:45here. And then and I think that the
- 3:47other thing is, is that the way that dogs see the world in
- 3:50colour or black and white and the audio, the pitch of sound,
- 3:55of course it's different. You know, dogs can hear things
- 3:57that are higher pitch than a human being and so on.
- 4:00Now, I think that this is, let's be honest, let's be, I think
- 4:03it's a, it's a great idea. Now, some owners who apparently
- 4:07has subscribed to this particular TV channel saying
- 4:09it's a great idea. Some, some of their little
- 4:11puppies and some of their dogs love it because remember, it's
- 4:16not just actual footage of dogs. So there are cartoons on it as
- 4:21well, so. The.
- 4:22Actual visual image is slightly different, but but either way,
- 4:26I'm going to say I think this is a bit of ATV stunt and I, I
- 4:31must, I must ask you. So you're, you're not somebody
- 4:36who subscribes to this idea. I I I suspect.
- 4:39No, I don't think it's going to be.
- 4:41Looking. At something else, yes.
- 4:43I don't think it's it's effective.
- 4:45I don't think it's effective for a dog because they don't look at
- 4:48the screen. I think there is an issue that
- 4:52you sort of alluded to there about the dogs responding or
- 4:55being able to hear high pitch screens which are high pitched
- 4:59sounds which can emanate from TV's and computers.
- 5:03So it may well be preventing them from relaxing.
- 5:06It's just a possibility that I mentioned.
- 5:08I don't think research has been done on that.
- 5:11But what this does show though is I have a different view on
- 5:15it. It shows the love that people
- 5:18have for their animals, for their dogs, and an expression of
- 5:23love is good. That's this sort of love.
- 5:27It's really for many dogs actually.
- 5:30And a love that you show to the dog.
- 5:33The dog sort of shows it back, but then he goes and craps on
- 5:40your carpet, you know, I mean, dogs, not speaking from
- 5:44experience, obviously, but dogs you see are are excellent for
- 5:49you learning to love without them being able to contribute to
- 5:54yourself in return. It's a great way for children
- 5:58growing up to learn how to care for people and to love them, to
- 6:03love a dog. Now I say the dog dogs don't
- 6:05love you back in that way. They're not able to take care of
- 6:09you, but they do love you back. I mean, I guess if we behave all
- 6:14behaved more like dogs, then we the, the world might be a better
- 6:18place. You know, dogs always rush to be
- 6:20the first one to greet someone who comes to the door and then
- 6:23greet them enthusiastically. They love going for long walks
- 6:27and enjoying the time time outside.
- 6:30And then they're able to sleep almost anywhere and just relax.
- 6:33I mean, if we were more like a dog, maybe we would have a
- 6:36better life. But dogs are dogs being loved.
- 6:39It's think it's a good side. It's a healthy thing in society.
- 6:42Not everyone loves them, but so many people do.
- 6:45It shows that they're loving people.
- 6:47It helps them to develop their sense of compassion.
- 6:50So an expression of that is this YouTube channel with a siesta
- 6:55for dogs help helping them to see whether or not it works.
- 6:59I like that the impulse comes from a love for the pet that you
- 7:03own. Well, according to the owners of
- 7:06the channel, they say that the video content is mental
- 7:09stimulation for your pets and that is something which is of a
- 7:13benefit. But I can't really see this
- 7:16working. I think that for any dog just
- 7:18simply glued to the TV, surely after hours they'd just be
- 7:23completely dog tired.
