- 2:32Speaker 1: Marmot Pucksintani Phil made his groundhog call this morning just
- 2:40Speaker 1: after seven am, which we brought to you live here
- 2:44Speaker 1: on aired Out, and he did he saw his shadow,
- 2:50Speaker 1: which means six more weeks of winter. Phil's accuracy, by
- 2:58Speaker 1: the way, about thirty five percent. I think Phil's just
- 3:01Speaker 1: looking for a little bit of love. I think he's
- 3:05Speaker 1: looking for a lady friend. I don't think he's worried
- 3:07Speaker 1: about the shadow. I think he's just been cooped up
- 3:09Speaker 1: in the burrow too long and he's restless and wants
- 3:14Speaker 1: to get out and get active, if you know what
- 3:15Speaker 1: I'm saying. Good morning, and thank you to a few
- 3:20Speaker 1: new followers and listeners. This morning. We have Phil in Brandon,

- 7:13Speaker 1: March first, and we got the link to register for
- 7:18Speaker 1: that up on the aired out page. It's going to
- 7:20Speaker 1: be amazing. I've already been in touch with some of
- 7:23Speaker 1: the organizers and we're gonna sneak them on the air
- 7:27Speaker 1: real real soon. Being that it is Monday, we have
- 7:34Speaker 1: not only day one of the work week, day number
- 7:40Speaker 1: two technically of February, and February is American Heart Health Month.
- 7:51Speaker 1: Heart disease, I think most of us would agree, doesn't
- 7:56Speaker 1: always come with flashing lights and sirens. Sometimes it whispers
- 8:04Speaker 1: before it roars. Today on aired out, I have a
- 8:11Speaker 1: local guy, Josh Howard, who's sitting right next to me,
- 8:14Speaker 1: right here, with a story that proves why paying attention
- 8:21Speaker 1: can save your life. As I said earlier this morning,
- 8:28Speaker 1: heart disease. And I've done some of the some of
- 8:32Speaker 1: the stats here, Josh, the number one killer of men
- 8:36Speaker 1: and women both in the United States every year. About
- 8:41Speaker 1: one in five deaths is heart related. And nearly half
- 8:46Speaker 1: of adults have some form of cardiovascular disease and don't
- 8:53Speaker 1: even know it. Pretty amazing. And those are just some
- 8:59Speaker 1: real quick, simple stats that I just found here in
- 9:01Speaker 1: front of me this morning. But I think I think
- 9:04Speaker 1: local stories hit a lot harder than national stats. This
- 9:10Speaker 1: was a big wake up call for you, I would say, So, yeah,
- 9:14Speaker 1: what what happened?
- 9:15Speaker 2: Man?
- 9:15Speaker 1: What's your what's your story?
- 9:19Speaker 3: Well, So September eleventh of twenty twenty three. I woke
- 9:23Speaker 3: up by my cat, of all.
- 9:25Speaker 1: Things, twenty twenty three. All right, so yeah, three years ago.
- 9:30Speaker 3: Yep, and I guess my cat was acting weird all night.
- 9:33Speaker 3: I had a I was housing somebody after the flood
- 9:36Speaker 3: that year, and he was still there and the cats
- 9:39Speaker 3: were bothered him. And well, next thing I know, I
- 9:42Speaker 3: wake up, like what's going on? And I just felt
- 9:44Speaker 3: this intense pain all through my chest, my back, my arms.
- 9:48Speaker 3: I could barely walk. I got up like, well, what's
- 9:52Speaker 3: going on? Trying to figure this out, figure this out.
- 9:55Speaker 3: I wake my wife up and I say, I think
- 9:57Speaker 3: I gotta go to the r and well we fly
- 10:00Speaker 3: up there. Of course I'm in a bit of a panic.
- 10:03Speaker 3: I can't put my shoes on. I'm just so weak.
- 10:05Speaker 3: I don't know what's happening to me. And of course
- 10:07Speaker 3: in my mind, I'm like, oh, it's could be nothing,
- 10:09Speaker 3: be intongestion or something like that. Right, Well, I get
- 10:12Speaker 3: up there, and I stumbled my way into the urgency room.
- 10:16Speaker 3: I hit the floor and all I can say is
- 10:18Speaker 3: chest pain. And they rushed me in to back. The
- 10:22Speaker 3: excellent staff up there, rush me in the back, throw
- 10:25Speaker 3: a bunch of tests at me cat scans and stuff,
- 10:27Speaker 3: and they said, well, we're not going to keep you here,
- 10:30Speaker 3: and I said, what's going on? Like, oh, you're going
- 10:31Speaker 3: to Burlington for emergency heart surgery. I was like, oh boy,
- 10:34Speaker 3: that kind of stinks. Barrytown ems excellent. Squad got me
- 10:40Speaker 3: up there in like thirty minutes or less, just flying,
- 10:44Speaker 3: absolutely flying from Berlin. From Berlin, Yeah, that's like their route.
- 10:49Speaker 3: There's probably more like twenty minutes. I mean we were
- 10:51Speaker 3: screaming I get up there. And the only delay I
- 10:54Speaker 3: had is I said, well, I want to see my
- 10:55Speaker 3: wife before I go into surgery. So they're waiting for
- 10:57Speaker 3: her to follow up, and she was flying to She
- 11:00Speaker 3: was talking with the doctors on the way up as
- 11:01Speaker 3: far as what they're going to do and options that
- 11:04Speaker 3: we had and so and so forth. But then we're told, like,
- 11:07Speaker 3: you know, it's gonna be a mechanical valve, all that
- 11:11Speaker 3: kind of stuff. The last thing I remember is saying
- 11:13Speaker 3: I love you to my wife, and they knocked me
- 11:15Speaker 3: out as they were shaving me up and all that
- 11:17Speaker 3: kind of stuff. It was happened pretty quick. Turns out
- 11:20Speaker 3: was an a archie section. I had no idea I
- 11:23Speaker 3: had any issues whatsoever. Leading up to it, I had
- 11:26Speaker 3: like some dizziness here and there. I had like a
- 11:28Speaker 3: little chest pain, and I always made excuses, you know,
- 11:32Speaker 3: back pain I always had, and like, oh, that's just
- 11:34Speaker 3: a sore back. It all adds up now in hindsight,
- 11:37Speaker 3: being twenty twenty, that it's probably all related. It turns
- 11:41Speaker 3: out I had a bicuspid valve, something that you are
- 11:43Speaker 3: born with.
- 11:44Speaker 2: It's just a deformity.
- 11:46Speaker 3: A lot of people have it don't have any problems
- 11:48Speaker 3: if they know about it.
- 11:50Speaker 2: Knowing about it is a big thing. It's genetics.
- 11:52Speaker 3: And how old do you know, I'm in twenty five
- 11:55Speaker 3: for about twenty years now, yeah, what I like to say.
- 12:01Speaker 3: But I was forty two at the time, all right.
- 12:03Speaker 1: And so forty two years yep of this being undetected, yeah,
- 12:10Speaker 1: and then I.
- 12:11Speaker 3: Don't know ninety yards And the only way to find
- 12:14Speaker 3: out about it is an echo cardiogram, a cat scan,
- 12:17Speaker 3: something on those lines.
- 12:18Speaker 2: They actually see it.
- 12:20Speaker 3: And I never really had one of those in my heart,
- 12:22Speaker 3: So I never had any never went to the hospital
- 12:25Speaker 3: for any heart related stuff, never had any red flags.
- 12:29Speaker 1: No, no real obvious warning signs. No in the in
- 12:34Speaker 1: the days or weeks leading up to this.
- 12:37Speaker 3: I was actually just worked outside the day prior and
- 12:39Speaker 3: I was tired from it. But you know, and looking
- 12:42Speaker 3: back on now, like my constant exhaustion when I was
- 12:45Speaker 3: doing stuff outside probably related most likely, And well, I'm
- 12:52Speaker 3: glad I made it. It was a close call. For
- 12:55Speaker 3: eight archtiz sections. People that have them the type as
- 12:59Speaker 3: like I had, where they actually pop, fifty percent of
- 13:03Speaker 3: the people that get them die on the spot, just
- 13:05Speaker 3: drop dead. Of those fifty percent, half of them never
- 13:09Speaker 3: make it to the hospital. Other people that do make
- 13:11Speaker 3: it to the hospital, only half of them make it
- 13:14Speaker 3: to the er or to the operating room. And from
- 13:17Speaker 3: there on it's like every minute you'd lose a percentage point.
- 13:21Speaker 3: I was in surgery for forty hours for that one,
- 13:24Speaker 3: forty forty hours total, not in a row, but you know,
- 13:28Speaker 3: they would keep me open. I had a lot of
- 13:29Speaker 3: bleeding issues, so they kept me open and put me
- 13:32Speaker 3: in the ICU where can give me a bunch of blood?
- 13:34Speaker 3: I think it was like seventy units of blood all together,
- 13:37Speaker 3: and I was down to last little bit that they
- 13:38Speaker 3: can give me because otherwise they just wouldn't work anymore.
- 13:43Speaker 3: And I finally stopped bleeding, which is good, and I
- 13:46Speaker 3: woke up I don't know, like a bunch of days later.
- 13:49Speaker 3: I couldn't even tell you, and it was kind of freaky,
- 13:52Speaker 3: definitely kind of freaky. I was definitely not with it
- 13:55Speaker 3: loss of houcination houcinations. I was staring at the ceiling
- 14:00Speaker 3: with a tube down my throat, couldn't say anything, and
- 14:03Speaker 3: I thought I was at home, and I was thinking
- 14:05Speaker 3: to myself, like when did I change the ceiling here,
- 14:07Speaker 3: you know, And the nurses would come in, like, how
- 14:09Speaker 3: can we turn a TV on for you? I'm like,
- 14:11Speaker 3: oh no, I thought that TV was breathing. I could
- 14:13Speaker 3: have swore I saw breathing, so I wasn't best for that.
- 14:17Speaker 3: Oh yeah, it was all kinds of fun, lots of pain,
- 14:20Speaker 3: but they managed that went pretty well. But yeah, it's
- 14:24Speaker 3: my second surgeon told me that, like, you know, you
- 14:27Speaker 3: probably feel like you got hit by a train, and
- 14:29Speaker 3: that's that's pretty accurate. That's pretty accurate. But I made
- 14:34Speaker 3: it through. Sorry, my recovery process. I had to learn
- 14:38Speaker 3: how to walk pretty well again. It's nothing really wants
- 14:41Speaker 3: to work after you've been down that long and had
- 14:42Speaker 3: that much of work done. They end up giving me
- 14:45Speaker 3: a mechanical valve. Eric root graft had a triple cabbage,
- 14:50Speaker 3: which is basic a bunch of bypasses. They just got
- 14:52Speaker 3: a lot of new parts. It was found I had
- 14:54Speaker 3: a bunch of tight bea dissections at that time too,
- 14:57Speaker 3: but being a complicate complexity of the had to happen
- 15:00Speaker 3: and we couldn't really deal with that at the time.
- 15:03Speaker 3: So I started that process of recovery. Went to cardi
- 15:05Speaker 3: rehab in December of that year and completed that. But
- 15:10Speaker 3: in end of December I ended up getting COVID, which
- 15:13Speaker 3: is kind of weird. That was kind of a shocker,
- 15:16Speaker 3: but it wasn't a big deal. They gave me some
- 15:17Speaker 3: medicine for it, the good stuff, and got over that.
- 15:20Speaker 3: But in January I started getting chest pains again of
- 15:23Speaker 3: twenty four and so I go to the er. I
- 15:26Speaker 3: had been now the er and the hospital here and
- 15:29Speaker 3: there for a while because at that point I was told, like,
- 15:33Speaker 3: you really don't have the I don't really have the
- 15:35Speaker 3: convenience of saying it's just a cold, it's just that
- 15:37Speaker 3: just a whatever, any issues.
- 15:39Speaker 2: I was supposed to go there. It was still kind
- 15:41Speaker 2: of that case.
- 15:42Speaker 3: So in January I started going in there again, and
- 15:45Speaker 3: they found that I had a infection. Who knows where
- 15:50Speaker 3: it came from, probably from the first surgery. Not their fault,
- 15:53Speaker 3: it's emergency surgery. It happens, you know. But had an affection.
- 15:58Speaker 3: It was sticking to my new valve, my mechanical valve.
- 16:01Speaker 2: Oh my god.
- 16:02Speaker 3: And of course said, well, we'll try some antibiotics. So
- 16:05Speaker 3: we tried antbiotics, like the really hardcore stuff you gotta
- 16:07Speaker 3: be in the hospital to get.
- 16:08Speaker 2: It looks like.
- 16:09Speaker 3: Neon yellow mimosas they pump into you. And I was
- 16:13Speaker 3: taking that pretty well and so on and so forth,
- 16:15Speaker 3: and then I got a growth on my valve and
- 16:19Speaker 3: they said, well, I had a ninety percent of My
- 16:21Speaker 3: doctor said, yeah, we probably have to go back in
- 16:24Speaker 3: there and do a redoce surgery. And of course I'm
- 16:27Speaker 3: still not in your right mind, so I'm gonna do
- 16:29Speaker 3: anything I cannot to A ten percent was one guy said,
- 16:31Speaker 3: well we could probably the antibotics might work. We keep
- 16:34Speaker 3: trying them. So that's the course of what I did,
- 16:37Speaker 3: not really thinking straight. I probably shouldn't been making my
- 16:40Speaker 3: own decisions at that point because out of pure fear,
- 16:43Speaker 3: and uh, well that didn't work. So by February, I
- 16:48Speaker 3: started peeing blood and all that kind of stuff and
- 16:51Speaker 3: went to ER and from February until April I was
- 16:54Speaker 3: in the hospital.
- 16:55Speaker 1: Which which February we talked to twenty four, twenty twenty four,
- 17:00Speaker 1: all right.
- 17:00Speaker 3: So not that long after the first surgery. So I
- 17:02Speaker 3: was admitted in and we're gonna be waiting for a
- 17:05Speaker 3: REDO surgery, and things just kept kind of getting worse
- 17:09Speaker 3: and worse and worse. I dissected again, and one of
- 17:11Speaker 3: my other dissectually had popped when I was up at UVM,
- 17:16Speaker 3: and they went in that was an easy one days,
- 17:18Speaker 3: went in through it artery and coiled it up and
- 17:20Speaker 3: sealed that one off, and then I got transferred down
- 17:23Speaker 3: to mass General. The reason I went down there is
- 17:25Speaker 3: not because UVM can't handle awesome doctors, awesome staff up there.
- 17:29Speaker 3: They didn't have all the specialized equipment they wanted to
- 17:31Speaker 3: have totally acceptable. So I went down to a Boston
- 17:34Speaker 3: General and taking care of me. Down there, I was
- 17:38Speaker 3: probably two days away from my open heart surgery again
- 17:41Speaker 3: to REDO, and I dissected again, this one near my liver,
- 17:46Speaker 3: and so they quickly went in the same thing with
- 17:49Speaker 3: the artery coiled that off. I got to do that
- 17:51Speaker 3: with no anesthesia because they didn't want to give me
- 17:54Speaker 3: an anesthesiacause it would affect the big surgery I had
- 17:56Speaker 3: to have done, so I got to Well, they put
- 17:59Speaker 3: Lyda cane on the incision, so you don't get that.
- 18:02Speaker 3: You feel everything else though, every last.
- 18:04Speaker 2: Bit of it.
- 18:04Speaker 3: Kidding me, yeah, And I could have asked for it
- 18:07Speaker 3: any time, but at that you go through enough where
- 18:10Speaker 3: you kind of get a pretty high tape fain tolerance,
- 18:12Speaker 3: and which is convenient, I guess, but it hurt.
- 18:16Speaker 2: But they took care of that.
- 18:17Speaker 3: And then the second surgery, open heart surgery, they just
- 18:22Speaker 3: took everything back out, replace it, put it back in,
- 18:24Speaker 3: and cleaned everything up and it was actually a lot smooth.
- 18:29Speaker 3: It was about twenty hours that time, so, which is excellent.
- 18:33Speaker 3: Recovery was a lot better. I was walking the same
- 18:36Speaker 3: day that they woke me up, and they actually woke
- 18:38Speaker 3: me up early because they were afraid that I was
- 18:39Speaker 3: gonna have a stroke. So I had a stroke after
- 18:41Speaker 3: first and during the first surgery, so it was a
- 18:44Speaker 3: high risk this time. So I was already throwing cloths everywhere,
- 18:47Speaker 3: destroyed my kidney, destroying my liver, whole nine yards. But yeah,
- 18:52Speaker 3: it's been a process and well, luckily I have not
- 18:55Speaker 3: been admitted to the hospital since then. So thank you
- 19:00Speaker 3: to all the hospital staff, all the nurses, all everybody.
- 19:03Speaker 3: Excellent excellent professionals at all these facilities.
- 19:08Speaker 1: So enough so the last two the last two years,
- 19:14Speaker 1: a year and a half.
- 19:16Speaker 2: Yeah, I've been in recovery for sixty months.
- 19:20Speaker 3: Whatever that is there, all right, So I think it
- 19:21Speaker 3: was like April twentieth I had the surgery.
- 19:23Speaker 2: Or something like that.
- 19:24Speaker 1: You've lost some weight a.
- 19:26Speaker 3: Little bit, Yeah, I have to see it, about one
- 19:28Speaker 3: hundred pounds. At one point, I was getting kind of emaciated.
- 19:32Speaker 3: It's I could not eat for like, I don't know,
- 19:36Speaker 3: three or four weeks after my first surgery, just couldn't
- 19:38Speaker 3: do it. Yeah, but food in front of men, take
- 19:40Speaker 3: a bite like now, I'm good. It was exhausting to eat.
- 19:43Speaker 3: So I was like, no, not having it. So it's
- 19:45Speaker 3: just fallen right off of me. Eventually had to make
- 19:49Speaker 3: some changes, had to eat something, and well got onto
- 19:54Speaker 3: kind of a health kick on that one. It's you
- 19:57Speaker 3: get a lot of limitations that you're allowed to eat
- 19:58Speaker 3: and what you can't eat. We're kind of weird, like
- 20:00Speaker 3: I can't have broccoli anymore. Okay, imagine that I actually
- 20:04Speaker 3: liked broccoli too, which kind of stinks. But some other
- 20:07Speaker 3: leafy greens because I'm on blood pinners.
- 20:09Speaker 1: Interesting.
- 20:10Speaker 2: Yeah yeah, and uh but you.
- 20:12Speaker 3: Know, no trans fats, no satur you gotta watch the
- 20:15Speaker 3: whole shebang. So yeah, I've been eating the same thing
- 20:19Speaker 3: every single day for since twenty twenty three.
- 20:25Speaker 1: And what is that? What is the same thing?
- 20:28Speaker 2: Oh?
- 20:29Speaker 3: I stink here. I have a big tub of some
- 20:31Speaker 3: zero sugar yogurt. That's my breakfast. I usually have a
- 20:34Speaker 3: protein shake. I go bananas, just bananas and apples to
- 20:39Speaker 3: eat throughout the day. And for dinner, I just do
- 20:41Speaker 3: ground turkey. It's like nine nine percent lean, yeah, real
- 20:44Speaker 3: lean stuff. Some keto bread and sweet potato. That's it.
- 20:52Speaker 1: Is that the menu? Every day?
- 20:57Speaker 3: Every day, every day, well, well every day about every
- 21:00Speaker 3: eight weeks.
- 21:01Speaker 2: I do.
- 21:01Speaker 3: I do cheat a little bit. I take my boy
- 21:03Speaker 3: over to the Chinese buffet.
- 21:05Speaker 2: He likes that place, and we go ham.
- 21:07Speaker 3: I feel like hell for about three days afterwards, do
- 21:10Speaker 3: you Oh yeah, I could. It's once you eat like that,
- 21:13Speaker 3: you start eating like you eat something really junkie. You
- 21:15Speaker 3: feel it pretty badly. So I think it's all that
- 21:20Speaker 3: sodium that gets me. But one time shots aren't gonna
- 21:24Speaker 3: kill you. Yeah, moderation, moderation, which is, uh, it's not
- 21:33Speaker 3: easy for so many of us now it's uh, it's
- 21:39Speaker 3: pretty difficult. I've been trying to teach my kids, uh,
- 21:42Speaker 3: the healthier lifestyle sort of thing. We we cook at home,
- 21:44Speaker 3: when should say? I cook the dinners at home every
- 21:46Speaker 3: single day and on occasion they want some dolls, they
- 21:51Speaker 3: want something junkie.
- 21:52Speaker 2: Yeah, I say, all right, it's been two months, let's
- 21:55Speaker 2: go ahead and do it.
- 21:56Speaker 3: And then we can wait a while again. Just whatever
- 21:58Speaker 3: they I said, you guys can have anything you want.
- 22:01Speaker 3: Is to make it worth it, because they're not gonna
- 22:03Speaker 3: do this tomorrow. It's gonna be a little while.
- 22:05Speaker 1: Josh Howard is my guest this morning on Aired Out.
- 22:09Speaker 1: We have a few people that are just joining us
- 22:12Speaker 1: that are wondering what happened, What's what's your story? And
- 22:17Speaker 1: their hearing just the last couple of minutes here. Bottom
- 22:22Speaker 1: line is you had what's called an aortic dissection, where
- 22:28Speaker 1: the inner layer of the a order. And I'm learning
- 22:32Speaker 1: this taking notes also surfing the web. Here tears and
- 22:39Speaker 1: blood goes between the layers of the aortic wall, and
- 22:44Speaker 1: this can kill.
- 22:45Speaker 2: You instantly, yeah, instantly.
- 22:49Speaker 1: So this is not your classic cardiac arrest heart attack.
- 22:54Speaker 3: No, No, it's a little worse than that. But what
- 22:59Speaker 3: leads up to it is a lot of a lot
- 23:02Speaker 3: of signs that you just kind of ignore. You might
- 23:04Speaker 3: have high blood pressure that can help it kind of
- 23:08Speaker 3: tear along there, stress, poor eating.
- 23:12Speaker 2: Habits, you know, things like that.
- 23:14Speaker 3: It's and of course you might see stuff like pain,
- 23:17Speaker 3: random pains here and there. Could be in your back,
- 23:20Speaker 3: could be in your arm, could be in your chest,
- 23:22Speaker 3: could have been be in your legs. Because the eight
- 23:24Speaker 3: orc root feeds everything everything. And what my doctor would
- 23:29Speaker 3: tell me is that internally, like your organs, you're as
- 23:33Speaker 3: far as like we're to locate pain, like where it's
- 23:35Speaker 3: actually hurting. Your body actually has no idea how to
- 23:37Speaker 3: tell you like, oh, my kidney hurts or my liver hers.
- 23:40Speaker 3: It might show up up here in your armpit. It
- 23:43Speaker 3: just because your body doesn't know where to tell you
- 23:45Speaker 3: where it's at. That's something's wrong.
- 23:47Speaker 1: February is American Heart Health Months, and being that this
- 23:55Speaker 1: is day number two of the month, what better time
- 24:02Speaker 1: to be talking about this. Yeah, I mean this is
- 24:07Speaker 1: you really, and you're a young guy. I mean you
- 24:10Speaker 1: really never know when your numbers up, when when this
- 24:14Speaker 1: is going to happen to you. And you were just
- 24:18Speaker 1: fine forty two years of your your life. You're walking
- 24:22Speaker 1: around you got this this.
- 24:25Speaker 2: Ticking time bomb, ticking.
- 24:27Speaker 1: Time bomb, and man, when your time ran up. I
- 24:32Speaker 1: mean you've you've already heard many times you're lucky to
- 24:35Speaker 1: be alive.
- 24:36Speaker 2: Yeah. They gave me a ten percent chance.
- 24:38Speaker 1: Ten percent from when you had from.
- 24:42Speaker 3: When I went into surgery to when I came out.
- 24:44Speaker 3: So by the time I came through.
- 24:48Speaker 1: And you had surgery twice.
- 24:50Speaker 3: Twice, ye, well a second one, I had a much
- 24:52Speaker 3: higher percentage, right, I mean, plan surgeries go so much smoother,
- 24:57Speaker 3: you can prep out so much better. But that's not
- 25:02Speaker 3: saying that Mass General does it better than UBM. I
- 25:05Speaker 3: think they're both fantastic, but one was playing, one was emergency.
- 25:08Speaker 3: They both saved my life. Yeah, they both did a
- 25:11Speaker 3: great job.
- 25:11Speaker 1: So I think the important the main takeaway today by
- 25:17Speaker 1: having you on is to change some lifestyle because you
- 25:24Speaker 1: could have some underlying, hidden stuff going on with your
- 25:29Speaker 1: heart that you you don't realize. I mean, you felt fine,
- 25:33Speaker 1: everything was normal in your life until this the most part.
- 25:36Speaker 3: I mean, like I said, hindsight, you kind of remember
- 25:38Speaker 3: signs that that might have been something, that might have
- 25:40Speaker 3: been something maybe I should have gotten it checked out.
- 25:43Speaker 3: But in the moment, it's like, Okay, that's just kind
- 25:45Speaker 3: of weird.
- 25:45Speaker 2: I'm dizzy. Maybe I just need to.
- 25:47Speaker 3: Drink water or something, of course, but the fact that
- 25:51Speaker 3: it was happening more often probably a decent sign. The
- 25:54Speaker 3: one blessing that I have in the whole situation is
- 25:57Speaker 3: being that because I had a bicuspid valvege a bad valve,
- 26:02Speaker 3: and since it's genetic, I got to get my whole
- 26:04Speaker 3: family tested, so they all get to echo cartograms and
- 26:08Speaker 3: check out the valve. And I found my oldest daughter
- 26:11Speaker 3: has it by custom valve, and so does my mother,
- 26:14Speaker 3: which is it's not a death sentence. It doesn't mean
- 26:16Speaker 3: it's going to turn into anything. It just means they're
- 26:18Speaker 3: going to monitor it, which is the absolute blessing.
- 26:21Speaker 1: Say that again, by what by cuspod? Okay, spell it,
- 26:27Speaker 1: b I.
- 26:28Speaker 2: See you at us P I D that's sound right.
- 26:32Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, I'm looking it up right now. Bacy Valvess
- 26:36Speaker 3: have three openings. I only had two.
- 26:38Speaker 2: Okay, it's a rare genetic.
- 26:44Speaker 3: Thing, but people have it a lot. Most people have it,
- 26:47Speaker 3: have no idea they have it.
- 26:50Speaker 1: This is amazing to hear this. I'm gonna share with
- 26:54Speaker 1: everyone what I'm seeing here this morning. I'm gonna post
- 26:58Speaker 1: it up in the comments. But this is incredible to
- 27:03Speaker 1: hear your story afterwards. I mean, we're year and a
- 27:09Speaker 1: half or so, it'sh two years somewhere in there since
- 27:14Speaker 1: the second surgery. You've lost one hundred pounds.
- 27:17Speaker 2: Yep.
- 27:19Speaker 1: You're living up at Planet Fitness. How many days a week?
- 27:24Speaker 2: I go there six days a week.
- 27:26Speaker 1: Six days a week for how long right now?
- 27:30Speaker 2: About an hour to an hour and a half a day. Yep.
- 27:34Speaker 3: Wow, just part of my daily routine. I wake up
- 27:38Speaker 3: nice and early. I get up, I get my take,
- 27:41Speaker 3: my medicine, all that kind of stuff, get what I
- 27:42Speaker 3: need to get in me, and just head up there
- 27:44Speaker 3: and get it out of the way. And it's not
- 27:47Speaker 3: always easy. It's not always something I want to do.
- 27:49Speaker 3: But I don't sit around and think about it because
- 27:53Speaker 3: that's procrastination. I just won't go so rip it like
- 27:56Speaker 3: a band aid and just do it, get it done.
- 27:58Speaker 3: You'll feel better afterwards every day, every.
- 28:01Speaker 1: Day, you told me before we cracked the microphones.
- 28:10Speaker 3: I hate cardio, Oh I do. I don't do cardio,
- 28:15Speaker 3: but it's I do lift. That's what I like to do.
- 28:18Speaker 3: And minus stands where my doctor are telling me, as
- 28:20Speaker 3: long as I'm doing something in there getting the heart
- 28:21Speaker 3: rate up, it all counts.
- 28:24Speaker 2: It's all good.
- 28:24Speaker 1: Heart rate is heart rate in a way, it's kind
- 28:27Speaker 1: of all cardio.
- 28:28Speaker 3: But yeah, it doesn't matter. It depends on how much
- 28:32Speaker 3: intensity you bring to it. So the more intensit you
- 28:34Speaker 3: bring it, the better you're gonna better results you're gonna have.
- 28:37Speaker 1: All Right, so you're you're lifting, and you also were
- 28:42Speaker 1: suggesting to me maybe a little bit less weight, but
- 28:49Speaker 1: proper form.
- 28:51Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, there's a lot of a lot of
- 28:53Speaker 3: information out there as far as how to lift and
- 28:55Speaker 3: stuff like that. You can you basically want to shoot
- 28:58Speaker 3: for like eight to twelve reps of any weight.
- 28:59Speaker 2: I mean, what are you doing?
- 29:01Speaker 3: That's the general rule and hitting failure somewhere in there. So,
- 29:04Speaker 3: but also focus on your range of motion, getting the
- 29:06Speaker 3: full range in there and putting the weight. Like let's
- 29:10Speaker 3: say you're doing a bicep curl instead of doing it
- 29:13Speaker 3: from down low, you set up a cable or your
- 29:15Speaker 3: weights however you want to do it, so the weight's
- 29:17Speaker 3: ninety degrees against your palm at full extension, so all
- 29:20Speaker 3: the weight is at the beginning, it gets lighter at
- 29:23Speaker 3: the top because that's going to just promote more growth,
- 29:25Speaker 3: more stretch, help your joints out.
- 29:27Speaker 1: Are you able to pull that microphone to your chest
- 29:32Speaker 1: so that our listeners can hear this mechanical.
- 29:36Speaker 2: That audible right now?
- 29:37Speaker 1: Get it's gonna be that's crazy, get it? Yeah, that's amazing.
- 30:02Speaker 1: So that's a mechanical valve.
- 30:04Speaker 2: Mechanical valve.
- 30:04Speaker 1: Yeah, how's that thing powered?
- 30:07Speaker 3: I think it's with hopes and dreams. They give you
- 30:11Speaker 3: a choice. It's either mechanical bulbine or pork valve. And
- 30:17Speaker 3: being my age, I recommend a mechanical because it's never
- 30:20Speaker 3: should never have to get replaced unless you get an
- 30:22Speaker 3: affection on it. Of course, pork and bowlbine min are
- 30:27Speaker 3: stands like every ten to fifteen years, you got to
- 30:30Speaker 3: go through.
- 30:30Speaker 2: The whole thing again.
- 30:32Speaker 1: Here's the thing, man, and I don't need to tell
- 30:34Speaker 1: you this because you know this, so many of us
- 30:38Speaker 1: know this. The winters are long and cold up here
- 30:43Speaker 1: in Vermont. Yeah, and I, along with so many other people,
- 30:48Speaker 1: are guilty of inactivity during the winter.
- 30:56Speaker 2: Just not.
- 30:58Speaker 1: Moving around enough, even if we're not going to the
- 31:03Speaker 1: gym six days a week like you are, just getting
- 31:08Speaker 1: out and having some controlled, regulated, consistent activity, even if
- 31:16Speaker 1: it's ten to fifteen minutes. We're all, We're not all.
- 31:20Speaker 1: So many of us are are guilty of just not
- 31:24Speaker 1: getting that in man.
- 31:25Speaker 3: Yeah, and it's whatever you think you would enjoy doing.
- 31:30Speaker 3: There's no wrong answer to how to be active. It's
- 31:32Speaker 3: whatever you want to do. If there's no wrong way
- 31:36Speaker 3: to do it, just have at it.
- 31:38Speaker 1: Glenn's asking you if that's if that drives you nuts,
- 31:41Speaker 1: if you can hear it all the time in your head?
- 31:44Speaker 3: Oh, I can hear it twenty four seven. I just
- 31:45Speaker 3: kind of block it out at home. I got some
- 31:48Speaker 3: old clocks I inherited, and you'll have a good lafe
- 31:51Speaker 3: loud take to it so it drowns it out.
- 31:53Speaker 2: Wow.
- 31:53Speaker 1: So what do you recommend to someone like my elf
- 32:00Speaker 1: who listen? Some of our excuses, if you will, for
- 32:09Speaker 1: lack of a better term, are pretty valid. We're just crazy, busy,
- 32:12Speaker 1: we're going from point A to point B to point C.
- 32:17Speaker 1: We've got to be here, We've got to be there.
- 32:20Speaker 1: And then it's go, go, go go, And then it's
- 32:26Speaker 1: whatever after dinner or whatever, it's crash onto the couch,
- 32:32Speaker 1: warm blanket, Netflix for the next however long, and then
- 32:39Speaker 1: until we're exhausted and we go to bed. That's a
- 32:44Speaker 1: routine that so many of us are caught up in. Ye.
- 32:49Speaker 2: I can make the excuse too.
- 32:50Speaker 3: I got three kids there, I say, I gotta drive
- 32:54Speaker 3: all three of them to school or or get them
- 32:55Speaker 3: to the bus every morning. I got a son that
- 32:58Speaker 3: has on three basketball t is right now, the practice
- 33:01Speaker 3: isn't A lot of stuff is crazy. I got to
- 33:02Speaker 3: make dinner for everyone in the household, and I still
- 33:05Speaker 3: go out and I and I work just about every day,
- 33:08Speaker 3: you know. Right now this winter not as much, but
- 33:11Speaker 3: I plow off my buddy, you know, so every time
- 33:14Speaker 3: it snowstorms out there, I'm up there at twelve o'clock
- 33:16Speaker 3: in the morning. But the secret is you make time
- 33:19Speaker 3: for it. You create the time, you plan ahead for it.
- 33:22Speaker 1: Don't find the time, because you'll never.
- 33:26Speaker 2: You're not gonna find it.
- 33:27Speaker 3: Find Maybe I'll have it afternoon now I go early
- 33:30Speaker 3: in the morning because that's what works for me. I
- 33:32Speaker 3: create the time I get up specifically for it, and
- 33:35Speaker 3: I go. I get it over with. I'm back in
- 33:37Speaker 3: time to do my entire day. And later on at night,
- 33:40Speaker 3: let's say I'm exhausted because I did so much that day,
- 33:42Speaker 3: I can go to sleep. I don't have any guilt
- 33:44Speaker 3: about whatsoever I did my stuff.
- 33:47Speaker 1: It's good to go eating well. When you say your stuff,
- 33:52Speaker 1: your eating habits, and your your exercise habits, that's your stuff.
- 33:57Speaker 2: Yep. Pretty well scheduled.
- 34:01Speaker 3: Every day, self disciplined. Brother is it's tough to come by.
- 34:06Speaker 3: It's easy easy to make excuses.
- 34:08Speaker 2: Not to go.
- 34:09Speaker 3: It's too cold outside, it's gonna be too busy up there.
- 34:13Speaker 2: You know.
- 34:13Speaker 3: It's you know, I'm too hungry now. I was like, oh,
- 34:16Speaker 3: I just want to wrest a little bit longer. Well,
- 34:18Speaker 3: we all know how that goes. Procrastination is it's rough.
- 34:23Speaker 3: Rip it like a band aid, just get it done with.
- 34:25Speaker 3: I don't like going every day sometimes sometimes I really
- 34:28Speaker 3: don't want to, but I just do it, get it
- 34:31Speaker 3: done with.
- 34:32Speaker 2: Wow, and once you're there.
- 34:34Speaker 3: I mean, I like going to the gym rather than
- 34:35Speaker 3: doing stuff at home because you go to the gym,
- 34:37Speaker 3: there's only one thing to do.
- 34:39Speaker 1: Yeah, right, that's it.
- 34:40Speaker 3: I'm at home. I'm like, oh yeah, we have a
- 34:42Speaker 3: treadmill and a bike and all that stuff at home. Yeah,
- 34:44Speaker 3: they're coat racks. That's just call it what it is.
- 34:48Speaker 3: I don't know how many other people out there have
- 34:50Speaker 3: a coat rack treadmill, but I'm pretty sure they're pretty
- 34:52Speaker 3: well common.
- 34:53Speaker 1: We got to comment here Becky saying, walk thirty minutes
- 34:56Speaker 1: a day, even twenty minutes a day.
- 34:59Speaker 3: And whenever you hit whatever you can muster. You know, yes,
- 35:03Speaker 3: making a challenge. You know, it's you walk thirty minutes
- 35:06Speaker 3: a day. You know, I wish I could have done
- 35:09Speaker 3: that after my first surgery and my second surgery. So
- 35:12Speaker 3: it's they try to get chipped walking really quick. You
- 35:14Speaker 3: still have tubes any it for drainage and the first
- 35:18Speaker 3: time to get a ship walking. If you get five
- 35:20Speaker 3: feet you're doing pretty good. Wow, your legs aren't working.
- 35:24Speaker 3: It's extremely painful and you just end up collapsing down.
- 35:29Speaker 3: So working up to that thirty minute mark to be
- 35:32Speaker 3: able to stay active is it's a struggle. Wow, So
- 35:36Speaker 3: take it as you will. If you can do thirty
- 35:38Speaker 3: minutes now, if something were to happen, your recover is
- 35:40Speaker 3: going to go so much better, no matter what kind
- 35:42Speaker 3: of surgery.
- 35:43Speaker 1: It is also important to know your numbers. Josh, your
- 35:48Speaker 1: your your blood pressure, your cholesterol, your your glucose, your sugars.
- 35:55Speaker 3: Oh yeah, I drop off a few gallons of blood
- 35:57Speaker 3: a month at the hospital up there. They like to
- 35:59Speaker 3: test me, and I keep pretty good track in my
- 36:03Speaker 3: heart rate, pretty good track of my blood pressure. I
- 36:05Speaker 3: keep logs of it as well as waiting stuff. The
- 36:07Speaker 3: doctors like that kind of stuff. And I would say
- 36:09Speaker 3: if anyone out there has any issues or are monitoring
- 36:13Speaker 3: anything at home, those are numbers. If you keep a
- 36:16Speaker 3: log book and you bring stuff into your doctor, they're
- 36:19Speaker 3: not going to think that you're overthinking anything whatsoever. You
- 36:21Speaker 3: tell them your whole story. If something's not important to it,
- 36:26Speaker 3: that them decide, you know, because it's great.
- 36:29Speaker 2: Anything's so weird. Everything's so weird.
- 36:31Speaker 3: So you could say, like, oh, yeah, all of a sudden,
- 36:34Speaker 3: I started liking hot sauce. It doesn't sound like much.
- 36:35Speaker 3: Maybe that is something I don't know. I'm not a doctor, but.
- 36:40Speaker 1: Everything there's a crowd out there. The I'm fine crowd.
- 36:45Speaker 2: Yeah, I know that type. My dad's that type.
- 36:47Speaker 1: I have a couple of friends and some of them
- 36:49Speaker 1: are listening right now. They know who they are. I
- 36:51Speaker 1: don't need to call them out. I may be one
- 36:56Speaker 1: of them.
- 36:57Speaker 2: Yeah, I think a lot of people are. They don't.
- 36:59Speaker 2: They're afraid to tell it stuff. Here's the thing they've heard,
- 37:03Speaker 2: they've heard it all before. You know. It's it's fine,
- 37:07Speaker 2: it's absolutely fine.
- 37:08Speaker 3: Yeah, you can't embarrass yourself or anybody else going in there.
- 37:12Speaker 2: You can. You can say you grew gentile in the
- 37:14Speaker 2: back of your head. They've probably seen it. Yes, it's fine,
- 37:18Speaker 2: you know.
- 37:19Speaker 1: And the other thing is, it's like so many of us,
- 37:23Speaker 1: we love to self diagnose. Yeah, I know my body,
- 37:27Speaker 1: my body better than anybody, and I know what's going on.
- 37:31Speaker 3: Yeah, it's it's tough to say what constitutes a trip
- 37:35Speaker 3: to the er or a call it a doctor, But
- 37:38Speaker 3: they call it a doctor.
- 37:40Speaker 2: Is anytime there's always somebody on call. If you have
- 37:42Speaker 2: a doctor, yeah, and they'll get back to you. They'll say, hey,
- 37:45Speaker 2: do this.
- 37:45Speaker 3: Or don't do this, and so and so forth will
- 37:48Speaker 3: tell you to monitor whatever it's.
- 37:51Speaker 2: But we're not doctors.
- 37:53Speaker 3: Sure, you know, they go to school for a long time.
- 37:55Speaker 3: They they spend a long time in the field to
- 37:57Speaker 3: get to that point, right, you know, they have a
- 37:59Speaker 3: lot of experience.
- 38:00Speaker 2: Don't decide.
- 38:01Speaker 1: Don't wait for the nausea, the sweats, the jaw paine,
- 38:07Speaker 1: the dizziness.
- 38:08Speaker 3: I never forget into that that it was a whole
- 38:11Speaker 3: episode I had, but none less. Yeah, that's you don't
- 38:13Speaker 3: want to get to that point because at that point
- 38:15Speaker 3: it might just be too late and it sneaks up
- 38:18Speaker 3: on you.
- 38:19Speaker 2: It hits you just out of nowhere. You have no thing,
- 38:22Speaker 2: no idea. It's common.
- 38:24Speaker 1: I mean, you know these these stats. One in five
- 38:28Speaker 1: deaths is heart related every year in America. There could
- 38:33Speaker 1: be ticking time bombs among the listeners that we have
- 38:40Speaker 1: that are listening right now. Yeah, what say you? What
- 38:47Speaker 1: do we do?
- 38:48Speaker 2: Uh?
- 38:48Speaker 1: You know, outside of knowing what our blood pressure is,
- 38:53Speaker 1: what our baseline is, what our cholesterol is, but saying
- 38:58Speaker 1: to our doctor, hey, I'd love to be kind of
- 39:04Speaker 1: checked out. I would love maybe to see a cardiologist.
- 39:09Speaker 2: There's no wrong question to ask a doctor.
- 39:12Speaker 3: It's you tell them what your symptoms, what your symptoms
- 39:14Speaker 3: are if you have any maybe you have a family
- 39:15Speaker 3: history of something and you're having a little fear. They'll
- 39:19Speaker 3: either recommend it or they won't recommend it. They'll but
- 39:22Speaker 3: they'll check you out right then and there. I mean
- 39:24Speaker 3: as far as ordering a blood test, yeah, they'll probably
- 39:27Speaker 3: do that. That's just standard operential operation. So you go
- 39:30Speaker 3: to lab and get your bood drama, do a full panel, syy,
- 39:32Speaker 3: what's going on? Yeah, you know, let's listen to your heart. Now,
- 39:35Speaker 3: let's check all this out, so and so forth, and
- 39:38Speaker 3: you know they'll be asking all those questions and just
- 39:40Speaker 3: answer one hundred percent honestly, you know, and if you
- 39:43Speaker 3: think of something after the fact, it's okay to call
- 39:46Speaker 3: it doctor back and say, oh, I forgot to tell
- 39:48Speaker 3: them about this. Yeah, you know it might change something,
- 39:51Speaker 3: but they can only work with what they know what
- 39:53Speaker 3: it comes down to. So you just got to tell
- 39:54Speaker 3: them everything, everything, no matter how embarrassing or whatever it
- 39:58Speaker 3: might be.
- 39:59Speaker 1: Sure you got you literally had a second chance at
- 40:08Speaker 1: living here.
- 40:09Speaker 2: Yeah, second chance at living.
- 40:11Speaker 3: And I'm the example of you know, what not to
- 40:16Speaker 3: do as far as with doctors. I didn't see a
- 40:18Speaker 3: doctor since twenty nineteen, twenty eighteen. At that point, you know,
- 40:23Speaker 3: COVID happened and you couldn't get in and my doctor
- 40:26Speaker 3: had left, and I just like, ah, I'll get another
- 40:28Speaker 3: one some other time when I go see him.
- 40:30Speaker 2: Well, now I.
- 40:31Speaker 3: Got like thirty doctors, so right, it's like I'm constantly
- 40:35Speaker 3: going to them.
- 40:36Speaker 1: And let's be honest here, man. I mean you said
- 40:40Speaker 1: ten chance of survival. Yeah, so ninety percent chance that
- 40:47Speaker 1: you should have been done.
- 40:48Speaker 3: Yep, that's what they were telling my wife. I put
- 40:51Speaker 3: a whole first surgery. They kept saying, like, he's probably
- 40:53Speaker 3: not going to make it. He's probably not going to
- 40:55Speaker 3: make it. I feel bad for she was a rock.
- 40:57Speaker 3: She stayed up there every night. Just ain't a niceu
- 41:00Speaker 3: there until I woke up.
- 41:02Speaker 1: And you have kids.
- 41:03Speaker 3: I got three kids. Yeah, so it was tough her.
- 41:06Speaker 3: Her parents, my in laws came down and took care
- 41:08Speaker 3: of the household. They took it pretty hard, and I
- 41:13Speaker 3: think there's still a little bit of trauma going on there.
- 41:15Speaker 3: But you know, the one benefit from the whole thing
- 41:18Speaker 3: is the newfound connections. The new found not just respect
- 41:23Speaker 3: but admiration for those relationships just brings everything kind of closer.
- 41:27Speaker 3: You really, I just really love being there now, you know,
- 41:32Speaker 3: more so, and I did it before, but even more so.
- 41:34Speaker 3: Now just part of everything, no matter how annoying it
- 41:37Speaker 3: might be. Yeah, because with two teenage daughters it.
- 41:40Speaker 2: Could be a little rough.
- 41:41Speaker 1: But it's how old are the kids?
- 41:44Speaker 2: Sixteen, fourteen, and ten.
- 41:46Speaker 1: Okay right now? Right now, so they were three years younger. Yeah,
- 41:53Speaker 1: my god man.
- 41:55Speaker 3: And we've got some We got them a little bit
- 41:57Speaker 3: of therapy to go over it and you know, talk
- 42:00Speaker 3: about whatever is going on.
- 42:01Speaker 2: In their heads because it's it's scary. Yeah.
- 42:03Speaker 3: And my oldest daughter, a sixteen year old, I mean
- 42:05Speaker 3: like that she has the same by custom that I had,
- 42:08Speaker 3: So yeah, causes little bit anxiety with sure, sure, but
- 42:13Speaker 3: trying to convince her like you know, it's it's okay.
- 42:16Speaker 3: You know, it's like if we know about it, the
- 42:18Speaker 3: doctors know about it. She gets seen regularly from cardiologists
- 42:22Speaker 3: and gets an echo cartogram every year to make sure
- 42:24Speaker 3: nothing's grown, nothing's happening, which I just got. I got
- 42:27Speaker 3: another one coming up here in two weeks four, so okay,
- 42:30Speaker 3: which she hates.
- 42:31Speaker 1: Do you feel like like you're a little bit of
- 42:35Speaker 1: a specimen that you got all these uh, these doctors,
- 42:39Speaker 1: these cardiologists that are like, wow, this is this is
- 42:43Speaker 1: the example of somebody who shouldn't have made it but
- 42:48Speaker 1: did so. Check it out, man, you know, look look
- 42:53Speaker 1: at get Frankenstein here.
- 42:55Speaker 3: Oh yeah, I had a cardioloist telling me that there's
- 42:57Speaker 3: not another cardiologist within two undred miles hasn't heard of
- 42:59Speaker 3: this case. My When I was down in Boston, I
- 43:05Speaker 3: found out they were teaching about me at Harvard because
- 43:08Speaker 3: I had a lot of Harvard students there in the hospital.
- 43:10Speaker 3: So that was kind of cool. And every doctor point
- 43:13Speaker 3: I go to that always bring some other people in
- 43:15Speaker 3: say can they have a listen?
- 43:16Speaker 2: They're like, yeah, sure of course.
- 43:18Speaker 3: You know, I kind of take a little bit of
- 43:21Speaker 3: pride knowing that they're learning from me and my past
- 43:24Speaker 3: mistakes with my health to what it is now and
- 43:27Speaker 3: what's going forward.
- 43:28Speaker 1: What are some of those past mistakes were you? Were
- 43:30Speaker 1: you smoking? Vaping?
- 43:31Speaker 2: What?
- 43:32Speaker 1: Oh?
- 43:32Speaker 3: Smoking? I wasn't wasn't a drinker. Yeah I was a smoker.
- 43:36Speaker 3: I was not the best eater, you know. I just
- 43:40Speaker 3: gas station food, fast food, you know, like grabbings, good
- 43:43Speaker 3: to grab and go. If I made dinner at home,
- 43:45Speaker 3: it was like, oh, let's put a whole bunch of
- 43:47Speaker 3: cheese on that, you know, Like I was all about
- 43:49Speaker 3: the flavors like I was eating with desire over freaking
- 43:53Speaker 3: anything else, like if I was hungry, like, oh, let's.
- 43:55Speaker 2: Grab a bag of Dorito's. That sounds like a plan.
- 43:57Speaker 2: Come on, you know that's it adds up?
- 44:00Speaker 1: And you were smoking?
- 44:02Speaker 2: Smoking?
- 44:02Speaker 1: How much?
- 44:04Speaker 2: About a pack a day? Okay?
- 44:06Speaker 1: For how long?
- 44:07Speaker 2: Oh? Since I was like nineteen eighteen something like that.
- 44:09Speaker 1: Wow.
- 44:11Speaker 3: And I quit on nine to eleven, because well, they
- 44:14Speaker 3: knock you out for a couple of weeks, it's pretty
- 44:16Speaker 3: easy to.
- 44:17Speaker 2: Not think about it no more. Sure.
- 44:19Speaker 1: Wow.
- 44:20Speaker 3: Which is another secret that's not only a secret to
- 44:22Speaker 3: weight loss is open heart surgery, but also secret to
- 44:25Speaker 3: quit and smoking. They'll help you right out, just like that.
- 44:27Speaker 3: They'll just show a tube down your throat and suck
- 44:30Speaker 3: all that junker right out, which is pretty much what
- 44:32Speaker 3: it was. You do you still crave a cigarette occasionally?
- 44:35Speaker 2: Yeah, but it's you get over it.
- 44:38Speaker 1: Wow? Were you drinking a lot before all this happened?
- 44:41Speaker 2: Oh? I never drank? Okay, I was never a drinker.
- 44:43Speaker 2: I never got to that. Never did drugs Okay, wasn't
- 44:46Speaker 2: my thing? Yeah, which will last.
- 44:49Speaker 3: The other thing too, is you know any medications you
- 44:52Speaker 3: might have taken that day or recently or if you
- 44:55Speaker 3: take any any thing or not all would counter or whatever.
- 44:59Speaker 2: Yeah, say it that way. Just tell you doctors.
- 45:02Speaker 1: Yeah, you be honest with them.
- 45:03Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 45:04Speaker 3: Because so I went in for my tow er the
- 45:06Speaker 3: first time I had. I had taken an asper before
- 45:09Speaker 3: I left the house, and a tile on all clothes
- 45:10Speaker 3: and so much pain. Like I want to see if
- 45:11Speaker 3: this does something right. I think I took some anti
- 45:14Speaker 3: like some tumbs or something like that, some ani digestion stuff,
- 45:17Speaker 3: and I told them about it, and turns out that
- 45:20Speaker 3: that changed how they did my asteg and all that
- 45:22Speaker 3: kind of stuff, which is good.
- 45:23Speaker 2: So it all matters.
- 45:25Speaker 3: Tell them everything every time, even if you don't think
- 45:30Speaker 3: it matters.
- 45:33Speaker 1: What do you want to do with the rest of
- 45:37Speaker 1: your life? What are maybe some things that you were
- 45:42Speaker 1: saying to yourself? Holy shit, if I get through this,
- 45:49Speaker 1: I'm gonna do this well.
- 45:52Speaker 3: The main thing to see my kids grow up and
- 45:54Speaker 3: be healthy, you know, learn those good habits. It's not
- 45:57Speaker 3: just you don't have to eat healthy every single day,
- 46:01Speaker 3: but just having a healthy lifestyle, eating healthy the majority
- 46:04Speaker 3: of the time, you know, learning moderation, you know, being fit,
- 46:09Speaker 3: being active.
- 46:10Speaker 2: Being healthy.
- 46:11Speaker 3: Let them grow up to be whatever they want to be,
- 46:13Speaker 3: no matter what it is, and just be happy.
- 46:16Speaker 2: That's what I want. So wow, that's the main goal.
- 46:21Speaker 2: You know. If they want to bad groceries for the
- 46:24Speaker 2: rest of their life.
- 46:25Speaker 3: I'm totally fine with that. That's what makes them happy.
- 46:26Speaker 3: They can make it work. Let's make it happen. But
- 46:30Speaker 3: I don't know the boy. I don't know what he
- 46:31Speaker 3: wants to do yet, the ten year old. But I
- 46:33Speaker 3: think my oldest wants to go into radiology and some
- 46:35Speaker 3: heart stuff, which is kind of interesting.
- 46:37Speaker 1: So you have you thought about getting involved with the
- 46:43Speaker 1: American Heart Association or being a spokesperson for any of
- 46:51Speaker 1: these clinics.
- 46:53Speaker 3: I haven't, but I don't. I mean, I wouldn't be
- 46:55Speaker 3: opposed to it, that's for sure. I don't know how
- 46:57Speaker 3: to go about.
- 46:57Speaker 2: Doing that, but you know, i'd absolutely do that. They do.
- 47:01Speaker 3: Keep telling me I'm a poster child of recovery, so yeah,
- 47:06Speaker 3: I make their jobs easy.
- 47:07Speaker 1: Apparently they know that they can't put a gun to
- 47:14Speaker 1: your head and say you have to go to the gym.
- 47:19Speaker 1: You have to get a minimum of this amount of
- 47:24Speaker 1: exercise if you're going to have any more of your
- 47:30Speaker 1: life left. In other words, this surgery that we've done
- 47:33Speaker 1: isn't one time fix all you need to We've done
- 47:39Speaker 1: our job. Now you need to do your job.
- 47:42Speaker 3: I do my part of it, and they says, all,
- 47:44Speaker 3: I keep this up. The one thing they can guarantee
- 47:46Speaker 3: is that when I do die, it won't be heart related,
- 47:49Speaker 3: which is wow.
- 47:51Speaker 2: You know the valuable outlast me apparently.
- 47:54Speaker 1: Wow, that's incredible, man.
- 47:57Speaker 2: But I think it's gonna make it a little harder
- 47:59Speaker 2: to go through airports. But that's all right.
- 48:02Speaker 1: Have you have you thought about getting It's easy to
- 48:05Speaker 1: get complacent with with things. It's easy to get comfortable
- 48:10Speaker 1: with your routine. You're a couple of years in now
- 48:14Speaker 1: you were seven days a week, Now you're you're six.
- 48:17Speaker 1: Have you have you thought about saying, I'm going to
- 48:20Speaker 1: cut back. I'm going to go five days a week.
- 48:22Speaker 1: I might even go four days a week.
- 48:24Speaker 3: No, No, I like it too much. It's I almost
- 48:27Speaker 3: feel guilty if I try it. You know I did
- 48:30Speaker 3: that once I went to I was like, oh, just
- 48:32Speaker 3: take the weekend off, screw.
- 48:33Speaker 2: Saturday, and I just regretted it.
- 48:36Speaker 1: Really.
- 48:36Speaker 3: Yeah, it's you're getting this kind of this rhythm, and
- 48:40Speaker 3: if you interrupt, it's just it's they'll still feel right.
- 48:44Speaker 1: Did you get any part of your workout regimen? Was there?
- 48:48Speaker 1: Was there a trainer involved? Was whether the doctor's telling
- 48:51Speaker 1: you this is what you need to do or did
- 48:53Speaker 1: you just go up there?
- 48:54Speaker 3: And it started off with cardeg rehab of a CVH
- 48:57Speaker 3: there and they did a great job.
- 49:00Speaker 2: That's mostly cardio equipment.
- 49:01Speaker 3: Not my favorite thing, but it kind of got me
- 49:03Speaker 3: back into the realm of it. And like I said,
- 49:06Speaker 3: once I got to a certain point there where it's like,
- 49:09Speaker 3: all right, I got this covered. I got the gym membership.
- 49:11Speaker 2: And I tried a little cardio there.
- 49:13Speaker 3: I did a little cardio home. Still can't stand it.
- 49:16Speaker 3: It's not for me, yea. So other people love it
- 49:18Speaker 3: and that's great. So whatever they're into. I always like
- 49:21Speaker 3: lifting that. I just went into that and just started
- 49:24Speaker 3: playing back around with that, and equipment's changed is the
- 49:27Speaker 3: last time I did it, so I was kind of
- 49:29Speaker 3: neat trying to learn some new things and.
- 49:32Speaker 2: Just took it from there.
- 49:34Speaker 1: This is so inspiring to hear this, and it serves
- 49:41Speaker 1: as such a profound message to all of us, no
- 49:46Speaker 1: matter who you are, where you are, where you're listening,
- 49:48Speaker 1: what's your way what you don't weigh what your lifestyle
- 49:52Speaker 1: is that there's always an opportunity to live healthier, to
- 49:59Speaker 1: make as difficult as they are, to make choices that
- 50:05Speaker 1: are going to ensure some longevity.
- 50:08Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 50:09Speaker 3: So I always tell the family. It's like they pick
- 50:11Speaker 3: out the meals that they make. I eat my own things.
- 50:13Speaker 3: So as I say, what do you guys want to
- 50:14Speaker 3: eat for dinners? And they pick out a list, and
- 50:16Speaker 3: I just make healthier choices within that list, you know.
- 50:20Speaker 3: So it's for example, like oh, we want meat lofe Like, okay,
- 50:24Speaker 3: well I can get the lean meat, right I can.
- 50:27Speaker 3: Or I can do with turkey like I do with myself,
- 50:29Speaker 3: you know, keep that leaned up, and you know, pick
- 50:31Speaker 3: certain agreements that just a healthier version of the same thing.
- 50:34Speaker 2: Yeah, and there.
- 50:35Speaker 1: You go commement here. Thank god, you know about it.
- 50:41Speaker 1: Genetic testing is so important, Yeah, it really is. How
- 50:47Speaker 1: do you do that? You just say to your doc?
- 50:51Speaker 3: Oh, for me, it's they just said you're gonna do
- 50:53Speaker 3: genetic testing. Yeah right right, But I think, yeah, you
- 50:57Speaker 3: can do it through your doctor. I would assume he
- 50:59Speaker 3: can have conversation. Yeah, I'm not sure if they'll say
- 51:02Speaker 3: yes or no.
- 51:03Speaker 2: Right, I think it all depends on assurances and.
- 51:06Speaker 1: Yeah you want to cover sure, God knows, but I
- 51:10Speaker 1: don't know. It just seems like so many of us
- 51:12Speaker 1: are like, you know, why why bother bringing it up?
- 51:14Speaker 1: Because I don't have any symptoms. My doctor is going
- 51:16Speaker 1: to be like, oh, why why, why do you want
- 51:19Speaker 1: to do that? Why do you want to test test
- 51:21Speaker 1: for that? We've a lot of us have heard that.
- 51:24Speaker 3: Yeah, it's I don't know, it's uh, trying to convince
- 51:28Speaker 3: your doctor doing things. I don't personally have that problem.
- 51:31Speaker 3: I have heard of that issue. Yeah, my wife always
- 51:33Speaker 3: says like, oh, doctors don't listen to women, Like well,
- 51:37Speaker 3: I've been to a doctor and my wife and she
- 51:38Speaker 3: doesn't tell them half the things that are going on.
- 51:40Speaker 1: So it's bringing it up usually the other it's the
- 51:46Speaker 1: other way around. It's the guys.
- 51:47Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, it's the guys will like to bring it
- 51:51Speaker 3: up and I don't know, just put it all on table,
- 51:54Speaker 3: that's all I can say. Yeah, you know everything. It's
- 51:57Speaker 3: like my foot's been hurting for a week. Well, I
- 52:01Speaker 3: mean theoretically that could be a blood clot, maybe risk
- 52:03Speaker 3: for a stroke, you never know.
- 52:05Speaker 1: Or it could just be absolutely nothing.
- 52:08Speaker 2: Yeah, just what's wrong with that? Right, I'll take a
- 52:10Speaker 2: peace of mind anything o the week.
- 52:13Speaker 1: Absolutely.
- 52:13Speaker 3: So the doctor say, yep, nothing's wrong with it. You're
- 52:15Speaker 3: perfectly fine. Okay, thank you. You know so it took
- 52:19Speaker 3: me two hours to find out. Well, you know what,
- 52:21Speaker 3: peace of mind? I'll take it, dude.
- 52:23Speaker 1: I think you should be doing a like a Ted
- 52:26Speaker 1: talk or something. You got you got one hell of
- 52:29Speaker 1: a story here, bro, I do.
- 52:30Speaker 2: Got a hell of a story.
- 52:31Speaker 3: But you know that kind of comes into the other thing.
- 52:34Speaker 3: It's my memory shot. Now, this is a whole thing
- 52:37Speaker 3: that goes with open heart surgery. Really, they call it
- 52:40Speaker 3: pump head syndrome. So it's your cognition's horrible at first.
- 52:44Speaker 3: Your memory, your short term memory is just I can't
- 52:47Speaker 3: remember names for life of me. You know, it's just gone.
- 52:51Speaker 3: It's a constant struggle. But some days are better than others.
- 52:56Speaker 1: Wow. Will that get better in time?
- 53:00Speaker 2: That's what they say, It might might not. It's one
- 53:04Speaker 2: day at a time. So I think it's gotten better
- 53:05Speaker 2: since the initial surgery, that's for sure.
- 53:08Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 53:08Speaker 3: I was really out of it, no doubt about it.
- 53:12Speaker 3: I don't think it was just the medicines I was on.
- 53:13Speaker 3: It was short, whole mixture of things.
- 53:15Speaker 1: Wow, Josh Howard my guest this morning, and I hope
- 53:21Speaker 1: this is going to be an episode that will carry
- 53:26Speaker 1: with you, not only in the month of February being
- 53:32Speaker 1: the American Heart month, but beyond that too. We should
- 53:39Speaker 1: be thinking about this kind of stuff all the time.
- 53:43Speaker 1: You've brought an incredible story to the airwaves, man, and
- 53:47Speaker 1: I hope it's resonating among the followers and listeners that
- 53:52Speaker 1: are tuned in. Life is short.
- 53:56Speaker 2: Life is short, and heart issues do not discriminate. Anyone
- 54:02Speaker 2: can have it.
- 54:03Speaker 1: And even if you're in good shape, even if you're
- 54:07Speaker 1: in great shape.
- 54:08Speaker 3: Yeah, just making some healthier choices here and there. It
- 54:11Speaker 3: makes such a difference, such a difference. And that's just
