- 1:09Jennifer Johnson: First, let's talk about why we compare ourselves to others.
- 1:13Jennifer Johnson: It's a natural human tendency rooted in evolutionary past, where social standing could mean the difference between survival and, well, not surviving.
- 1:23Jennifer Johnson: Fast forward to today, we're still wired to gauge our position relatives to others.
- 1:29Jennifer Johnson: But here's the problem In the age of social media, we're not just comparing ourselves to our immediate circle anymore.
- 1:36Jennifer Johnson: We're comparing ourselves behind the scenes to everyone else's highlight reel, often when people don't even know us personally.
- 1:45Jennifer Johnson: This constant comparison can lead us to decreased self-esteem and confidence, increased stress and anxiety, loss of focus on our own goals and values and a distorted view of success and happiness.
- 1:58Jennifer Johnson: Remember, what we see online and even in day-to-day interactions is just the tip of the iceberg.
- 2:04Jennifer Johnson: We rarely see the struggles, the failures and the hard work behind the success.
- 2:08Jennifer Johnson: So what do I mean by staying in your lane?
- 2:11Jennifer Johnson: It's all about focusing on your own journey, your own goals, your own growth, rather than constantly looking around to see how you measure up to others.
- 2:19Jennifer Johnson: Think of life as a multi-lane highway.
- 2:23Jennifer Johnson: Everyone's headed in the same general direction, towards their own version of success and fulfillment, but each lane is unique, with its own space, its own obstacles and its own destination.
- 2:34Jennifer Johnson: When you stay in your lane, you focus on personal growth instead of trying to outdo everyone else, and you're competing with yourself, always striving to be better than you were yesterday.
- 5:11Jennifer Johnson: You celebrate others' successes.
- 5:13Jennifer Johnson: When you're secure in your own journey, you can genuinely be happy for others without feeling threatened, and you make authentic choices.
- 5:22Jennifer Johnson: Your decisions are based on your values and goals, not on keeping up with other people.
- 5:27Jennifer Johnson: You appreciate your unique journey.
- 5:29Jennifer Johnson: Everyone's path is different.
- 5:32Jennifer Johnson: Embracing your unique experiences and challenges leads to greater self-acceptance and you reduce stress and anxiety.
- 5:40Jennifer Johnson: When you're not constantly worried about how you measure up, you can enjoy the journey that much more.
- 5:46Jennifer Johnson: Remember success isn't a finite resource.
- 5:50Jennifer Johnson: Someone else's success doesn't diminish your own potential for achievement.
- 5:55Jennifer Johnson: Don't compare your chapter one to their chapter 20.
- 5:58Jennifer Johnson: Now let's talk about some ways that we can stay in our lane and avoid that comparison trap.
- 6:04Jennifer Johnson: Define your own success.
- 6:05Jennifer Johnson: Take some time to really think about what success means to you.
