Transcript
- 0:02Speaker 1: Here's your host, Alex Garrett. All right, and welcome inside
- 0:08Speaker 1: to Alex Garrett's podcast network. It is one leg up
- 0:11Speaker 1: on sports tonight. And before we get started with Terminello's take,
- 0:15Speaker 1: I just want to say a happy birthday to Anthony Rizzo.
- 0:18Speaker 1: The picture is up there on my x account Alex
- 0:22Speaker 1: g NYC one. I'll post on Instagram. One of the
- 0:25Speaker 1: best moments this summer was definitely meeting Anthony Rizzo and
- 0:29Speaker 1: of course the Woodbridge experiences. And you know, while I'm
- 0:32Speaker 1: thinking about all this, I wanted you to hear from
- 0:36Speaker 1: one Chris k c k known on Instagram and Twitter
- 0:41Speaker 1: about being at Woodbridge Brewery while I'm with one of
- 0:45Speaker 1: the Repbex community members. What's like to be our at
- 0:48Speaker 1: Wavebridge tonight.
- 0:49Speaker 2: Oh it's amazing. We got like five all current players
- 0:54Speaker 2: all do the thing.
- 0:56Speaker 1: Let me got it off guard. Amazing. Wow, it's a
- 0:59Speaker 1: special up this year, don't you think? Oh yeah, I
- 1:01Speaker 1: thought we can go all the way even we want to.
- 1:03Speaker 3: Come on, these guys are not, you know, playing right now.
- 1:05Speaker 3: But I ended up Trevy and Clark come back. That's
- 1:07Speaker 3: gonna be real, sayous team, isn't it.
- 1:10Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 1:10Speaker 2: Clark was finishing really well. You're fishing like both with
- 1:12Speaker 2: three al right, and it's rather than this time, we're
- 1:16Speaker 2: taking me valuable.
- 1:16Speaker 1: I thank you.
- 1:17Speaker 3: Tell me about what you do.
- 1:18Speaker 1: Let's see all over the place.
- 1:21Speaker 2: I'm a good storer service reread my day, but I'm
- 1:23Speaker 2: a god thing greater, got to become one. All right?
- 1:25Speaker 1: What can we follow you?
- 1:26Speaker 2: You follow me my hand? My handle is see I
- 1:29Speaker 2: dropped my last hand k A I I L A
- 1:31Speaker 2: T H on all platforms Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
- 1:34Speaker 3: All right, and we're gonna have a follow up combination
- 1:37Speaker 3: of a longer time, you know, a long down.
- 1:42Speaker 1: It was a great event with the guys and Jack
- 1:45Speaker 1: Curry and Kinley and Cabrera and Trevy and you know
- 1:50Speaker 1: Clark Schmid as well as Luke Weaver, and they were
- 1:52Speaker 1: hoping to get the series win tonight and Terminal was
- 1:56Speaker 1: taking I cover. But before we get to it, a reminder,
- 1:59Speaker 1: we are holding a fundraiser for Justin Time Baseball. That's right.
- 2:03Speaker 1: We have the opportunity at the Alex Garrett podcast Network
- 2:06Speaker 1: to sponsor a child to play in the Oswaldo Cabrera
- 2:11Speaker 1: Baseball camp with Just In Time Baseball. And I wanted
- 2:15Speaker 1: to once again, drop the link and once again drop
- 2:17Speaker 1: my venmo And if you do want to donate to
- 2:21Speaker 1: support the camp and support this effort, we are partnering
- 2:25Speaker 1: with justin Time Baseball. Leave a comment for justin Time Baseball.
- 2:29Speaker 1: That way I know where to direct the proceeds to.
- 2:32Speaker 1: So again, the goal is ultimately three hundred. I'm only
- 2:36Speaker 1: asking for one fifty, but if we have overhead, of
- 2:38Speaker 1: course we'll send that over to justin Time Baseball. Can't
- 2:42Speaker 1: wait for that as well. All right, on the Alex
- 2:45Speaker 1: Garrett Podcast Network. Right now, right now is lou Terminello's take. Lou,
- 2:52Speaker 1: before we start any of our sports discussion, I gotta
- 2:54Speaker 1: say this. I often found myself doing a lot of
- 2:58Speaker 1: monologue on the news of the day and disability and accessibility,
- 3:02Speaker 1: and maybe people wonder why I don't talk sports alone.
- 3:05Speaker 1: It's because I'd rather talk with someone, and I feel
- 3:07Speaker 1: like talking with someone makes sports talk better than just
- 3:10Speaker 1: ranting through yourself on the air. Maybe I'll rub on that,
- 3:13Speaker 1: but I just love the one on one conversation instead
- 3:17Speaker 1: of the monologue when it comes to sports talk. Would
- 3:19Speaker 1: you agree on that?
- 3:20Speaker 2: Yeah? I like to give and take. I like to
- 3:22Speaker 2: give and take with somebody else talking sports like we do.
- 3:26Speaker 1: I agree, because, to be honest, a lot of the
- 3:30Speaker 1: give and take now is on Twitter. We don't get
- 3:32Speaker 1: that in person talk. So whenever I got the chance
- 3:35Speaker 1: to interview someone on sports, that is where I feel
- 3:38Speaker 1: like it's the best time to talk about it because
- 3:41Speaker 1: I get sit here all day and talk about it.
- 3:42Speaker 1: But I just not my thing anymore. It's now bringing
- 3:46Speaker 1: on the experts and friends like you to give me
- 3:49Speaker 1: the sports update every week.
- 3:51Speaker 2: Well, Alex, thank you so much, But yeah, I love
- 3:54Speaker 2: the back and forth. It always makes to me the
- 3:58Speaker 2: listen more interesting.
- 4:00Speaker 1: But I want to start out with actually your team,
- 4:02Speaker 1: the Mets, because they went out to the coast, they
- 4:06Speaker 1: lose two out of three, then the Rockies. You know,
- 4:10Speaker 1: I gave him a fight the last couple of games.
- 4:13Speaker 1: Is there a bit of a slowdown going on here
- 4:15Speaker 1: or the Mets?
- 4:16Speaker 2: Okay, I think there is a bit of a slowdown
- 4:21Speaker 2: the All Star break those four days off, Alex did
- 4:25Speaker 2: something that major league pitching couldn't do. They slowed down
- 4:28Speaker 2: the Mets hitting machine that was going on for almost
- 4:32Speaker 2: two full months. And you know, they they they just
- 4:37Speaker 2: haven't been hitting since since post All Star break Nim
- 4:41Speaker 2: always been in a huge slump. Lindor has he was
- 4:45Speaker 2: red hot, he's cooled off. Francisco Alvarez has cooled off.
- 4:53Speaker 2: He's chasing pitches outside, and he's in his first full
- 4:57Speaker 2: year to major leagues and he's you know, he's coming
- 4:59Speaker 2: off the seven weeks that he missed when he was
- 5:02Speaker 2: operating on for the broken thumb. I mean, I think
- 5:05Speaker 2: they'll be in it to the end, but they are
- 5:08Speaker 2: up against two hot teams in the San Diego Padres
- 5:15Speaker 2: and the Arizona Diamondbacks. They are on fire. Both teams
- 5:19Speaker 2: are getting timely hitting, clutch hitting, they're getting solid pitching.
- 5:26Speaker 2: San Diego did a terrific job fortifying the bullpen at
- 5:29Speaker 2: the trade deadline. They're going to get you Dolfrish and
- 5:34Speaker 2: Joe Muscro back pretty soon. That's going to make them
- 5:37Speaker 2: even tougher. The beat. So, I mean the Mets, the
- 5:41Speaker 2: Mets road to getting that playoff spot, it's going to
- 5:45Speaker 2: be really difficult. I mean, Arizona is twenty four to
- 5:48Speaker 2: nine since June twenty ninth, you know they are. You
- 5:53Speaker 2: got to give a credit to these teams. They've really
- 5:56Speaker 2: done a good job. Now the Mets are still they're
- 5:59Speaker 2: still doing fine. I mean it's not like they've collapsed
- 6:02Speaker 2: or anything. They were half a game behind Atlanta going
- 6:05Speaker 2: into into play today. And Atlanta obviously has taken a
- 6:09Speaker 2: free fall with their injuries and uh that's brought them back.
- 6:14Speaker 2: But for the Mets, they got it. They'll starting again.
- 6:17Speaker 2: I mean they were. They were just hitting at a
- 6:20Speaker 2: ridiculous clip, and the same thing will happen to the
- 6:22Speaker 2: Padres and to the Diamondbacks. They'll come back down a bit.
- 6:26Speaker 2: But the one thing that really killed the Mets get
- 6:29Speaker 2: losing Cody Singer. That was a devastating loss. He's gone
- 6:33Speaker 2: for the first four months, came back at his first start,
- 6:38Speaker 2: looked like he didn't miss anything. And the Mets have
- 6:40Speaker 2: nobody on their staff that's as good as Cody's Zinger,
- 6:44Speaker 2: So that that that's a tough loss that the Mets
- 6:46Speaker 2: are going to have to try to make try to
- 6:48Speaker 2: make do without for the rest.
- 6:50Speaker 1: Unbelievable. The first game back and he has this injury,
- 6:55Speaker 1: like almost really it was just horrible, a really horrible scene.
- 7:00Speaker 1: By the way, We've seen this a couple of times.
- 7:01Speaker 1: You know, Kunya Junior having that non contact play running
- 7:07Speaker 1: from second to third, I mean, is it the field
- 7:09Speaker 1: there is? Are these bodies not as much in shape
- 7:12Speaker 1: and rehab? Like, what's going on with these players? They
- 7:14Speaker 1: can break down now on non contact plays.
- 7:17Speaker 2: Well, maybe they're they're in tuga to shape, Alex. Maybe
- 7:22Speaker 2: they're in tuga to shape because the play that that
- 7:25Speaker 2: singer got injured on, he was just trying to get
- 7:28Speaker 2: out of the way of a couple of infielders catching
- 7:32Speaker 2: a little pop up and he was heading towards first
- 7:34Speaker 2: base in case the pop up drop. Just a horrible
- 7:37Speaker 2: break for the Mets. And uh, he's a real good pitcher,
- 7:42Speaker 2: there's no doubt about it. I mean, I think the
- 7:45Speaker 2: Mets are going to get met managements are going to
- 7:47Speaker 2: get what they what they wanted. We're being competitive in
- 7:50Speaker 2: twenty four and will reset the organization, which is what
- 7:54Speaker 2: they what's what they want to do. So I think
- 7:56Speaker 2: they'll be in the rest of the way. But they have,
- 7:59Speaker 2: you know, is tough road trip now and not tough
- 8:03Speaker 2: being so much with the opposition. Yeah, they're much better
- 8:06Speaker 2: in the Angels, They're much better than the Rockies. But
- 8:10Speaker 2: you know, in the space of forty eight hours, they
- 8:12Speaker 2: were in three different time zones. They play a game
- 8:15Speaker 2: in Anaheim on a Sunday, Saint Louis on Monday afternoon,
- 8:22Speaker 2: and then Denver on Tuesday night. So hopefully they can
- 8:28Speaker 2: get through these next couple of games. They don't go
- 8:31Speaker 2: to Seattle, then they come home, have that home stand
- 8:34Speaker 2: and then got to go back to the West Coast
- 8:36Speaker 2: again Arizona and San Diego. That that's tough, and that's
- 8:43Speaker 2: because you have now this interleague scheduling.
- 8:46Speaker 1: Where in the past and I was gonna say the
- 8:48Speaker 1: Oreos and the Mets play here, the Mets could play
- 8:51Speaker 1: a big friend to the your Yankees during that series.
- 8:54Speaker 1: I can tell you that much.
- 8:56Speaker 2: Well, the Oreos, as we talked about the All Star
- 8:59Speaker 2: just before the All Star Break about teams that could
- 9:02Speaker 2: rise or drop in the second half, and the Orioles
- 9:05Speaker 2: have so much pitching injuries. I mean, I think they'll
- 9:08Speaker 2: be in at the rest of the way. I think
- 9:10Speaker 2: they're still a little bit too young to be do
- 9:14Speaker 2: a lot of damage come playoff time. Five guys on
- 9:18Speaker 2: their loaded minor league system made their debut this year
- 9:25Speaker 2: and they just have they have pitching injuries. Can they
- 9:28Speaker 2: still finish first, Absolutely, they can still finish first, But
- 9:31Speaker 2: it's gonna be tough for them. It's gonna be tough
- 9:33Speaker 2: for them, and it's gonna be tough for the Yankees too.
- 9:37Speaker 2: That's that's a good race. I mean. Then the shocker
- 9:39Speaker 2: in that division is this is the Red Sox. The
- 9:43Speaker 2: Red Sox I thought would be nowhere, and they are
- 9:48Speaker 2: right there with Kansas City, you know, a little half
- 9:50Speaker 2: a game behind or a half a game ahead of
- 9:52Speaker 2: Kansas City, who's done a spectacular job after losing one
- 9:56Speaker 2: hundred and six games last year, led by the great
- 9:58Speaker 2: shortstop Junior. He's right there with.
- 10:02Speaker 1: Yeah, I am I bone to pick about those thinks
- 10:04Speaker 1: there's an m VP race between with Junior and Judge.
- 10:07Speaker 1: I just don't see the comparison.
- 10:09Speaker 2: But anyway, well, Judge, you win to Alex, but he's
- 10:14Speaker 2: but but Bobby with junr is right there. But Judge
- 10:17Speaker 2: is gonna win it. He'll win the unless he has
- 10:19Speaker 2: a terrible six weeks, which I don't see that happening.
- 10:23Speaker 1: With Junior though, infuse the Royals in a way we
- 10:26Speaker 1: haven't seen maybe since the George Brett days. I don't know.
- 10:30Speaker 1: He seems like that kind of generational player that fires
- 10:33Speaker 1: up a middle of the middle of America team like
- 10:36Speaker 1: the Royals, like Brett did in the in the eighties.
- 10:40Speaker 2: Well, he's Brett's a great player, obviously a Hall of
- 10:44Speaker 2: Fame or Bobby Wood Junior. I mean when I watch him,
- 10:48Speaker 2: he is just spectacular. I mean he could he's truly
- 10:52Speaker 2: a five tool player. But uh, Judge is the best
- 10:55Speaker 2: player in baseball right now. But uh, you could put
- 10:59Speaker 2: with with Jr. I think with Junior. I put with
- 11:02Speaker 2: Junior ahead of Otani right now because Soltani's just the
- 11:05Speaker 2: age in twenty twenty four and he's a great DH
- 11:07Speaker 2: and he's probably gonna win MVP in the National League.
- 11:11Speaker 2: But what Junior is just a tremendous all around player.
- 11:16Speaker 2: But Judge are gonna win MVT.
- 11:19Speaker 1: I do like that Otani has been only DH. I
- 11:22Speaker 1: know that he's a pitcher too, but last year, I mean,
- 11:25Speaker 1: the guy was pitching and hitting in a doubleheader. He
- 11:27Speaker 1: was you know, it just wore his arm out. We
- 11:30Speaker 1: could see that. So film to play a little more conservative,
- 11:33Speaker 1: I think is better for him to see looks to
- 11:36Speaker 1: recoop that arm. But man, as a hitter, he just
- 11:40Speaker 1: keeps going and it's it's fun to watch him. That
- 11:42Speaker 1: swing is so cool to watch of Otani's I gotta
- 11:45Speaker 1: say the way he swings and almost off the bat
- 11:48Speaker 1: most nights, right, it flies.
- 11:50Speaker 2: When the ball hit, when the ball goes off his back,
- 11:53Speaker 2: it's it's just like when it goes off judges bat.
- 11:56Speaker 2: I mean, these guys are knocking it into next week.
- 12:00Speaker 2: And his offensive skills as far as rankings and nationally,
- 12:05Speaker 2: I think he leads nationally and walks obviously, he's up
- 12:08Speaker 2: there in every great category and he's probably gonna steal
- 12:11Speaker 2: forty bases. I think he's third in a nationally installed basis.
- 12:14Speaker 2: Right now, he's gona win MVP, I think unless the
- 12:18Speaker 2: Dodgers collapse. And right now the Dodgers are only three
- 12:23Speaker 2: games up on raging hot Arizona and San Diego, so
- 12:28Speaker 2: we'll see the Dodgers.
- 12:30Speaker 1: Yeah, the Dodgers have to watch out because the Diamondbacks
- 12:32Speaker 1: are on their heels again. And you know, we've always
- 12:35Speaker 1: said the Dodgers are a good regular season team, but
- 12:38Speaker 1: this year, you know, they're not bursting out of the pack.
- 12:42Speaker 1: And I think there's some disappointment with that because they
- 12:45Speaker 1: signed Otani and they signed Yamamoto to these big contracts,
- 12:49Speaker 1: and yet they're only three games up, and they've been
- 12:53Speaker 1: healthy most of the year, haven't they.
- 12:56Speaker 2: Well, I mean, Betts has been injured, and you know,
- 13:00Speaker 2: they've had their injuries, just like most major league teams.
- 13:04Speaker 2: This has been a weird year. There's been a lot
- 13:06Speaker 2: of injuries in Major League Baseball. But Freeman recently missed
- 13:11Speaker 2: eight games because his son had a horrible, horrible injury,
- 13:18Speaker 2: you know, horrible disease. But they took care of that,
- 13:22Speaker 2: and I mean, they'll be all right. But Alex, there's
- 13:28Speaker 2: something I don't know. Maybe they're going to turn it
- 13:30Speaker 2: on come playoff time, but they never have in the past,
- 13:33Speaker 2: so you know, so we'll we'll see there. But it's
- 13:39Speaker 2: major League Baseball issues wide open. I mean, the Phillies
- 13:43Speaker 2: look like they had and I still think they do
- 13:46Speaker 2: have the best balanced team, even though their bullpen has
- 13:50Speaker 2: gone into the crapper and they've lost fifteen out of
- 13:55Speaker 2: their last twenty one games. I mean, nobody figured that
- 13:58Speaker 2: Phillies to go six and fifteen. And you know, even
- 14:02Speaker 2: in uh Bryce Hawper, who was an MVP candidate, if
- 14:06Speaker 2: the Philly if he gets hot in the last six weeks,
- 14:09Speaker 2: and he went through a two for thirty nine slump,
- 14:12Speaker 2: so it's wide open. Anybody can win. Anybody, Oh absolutely.
- 14:18Speaker 1: And I would also note that the Mets, they the
- 14:25Speaker 1: Mets and Braves have no business being, you know, even
- 14:30Speaker 1: just under ten games behind. I mean, the Philly should
- 14:32Speaker 1: be running away with this. But that's a credit to
- 14:34Speaker 1: the Mets. That's a credit to Atlanta. Yeah, Philly's falling,
- 14:36Speaker 1: but these other guys, I mean, Atlanta's had their skids,
- 14:40Speaker 1: but they're both staying competitive. And I do think the
- 14:43Speaker 1: Phillies are going to win the division. But hey, I
- 14:45Speaker 1: think any met would be happy being eight games behind
- 14:47Speaker 1: in August. That was something no one ever saw possible
- 14:51Speaker 1: or ever thought possible.
- 14:52Speaker 2: Well, especially on June second, when they were eleven games
- 14:55Speaker 2: under five hundred. Nobody would have thought that would be possible.
- 15:00Speaker 1: But here we are, and you know what, it just
- 15:02Speaker 1: seems like there's a lot of baseball to be played now.
- 15:05Speaker 1: I want to say on the hot seat, obviously, we
- 15:08Speaker 1: saw the White Sox finally fire their manager, and kudos
- 15:13Speaker 1: to Grady Sizemore. That guy played his heart and soul
- 15:16Speaker 1: for Cleveland. I think he make a great manager, and
- 15:18Speaker 1: I think we're going to see his managerial chops here
- 15:21Speaker 1: the next couple of months. But it does bring the
- 15:23Speaker 1: question who else is on it? I have to say
- 15:25Speaker 1: the Orioles manager is so hot headed. I mean, he
- 15:30Speaker 1: does seem to lose control of this team if they
- 15:32Speaker 1: don't win the division. Would you say he's on the
- 15:34Speaker 1: hot seat or no?
- 15:35Speaker 2: No, absolutely not. He's done a great job with a
- 15:39Speaker 2: young team. He was there when they were in adult drums,
- 15:44Speaker 2: putting the team together. He's going to be He's definitely
- 15:47Speaker 2: going to be there. He's not on the hot seat.
- 15:51Speaker 2: I would say maybe Carlos Marmol will be on the
- 15:54Speaker 2: hot seat for the Cardinals if the Cardinals don't make
- 15:57Speaker 2: the playoffs. And but right off the top of my head,
- 16:01Speaker 2: I can't think of too many managers who will be
- 16:04Speaker 2: on on the hot seat. I really can't. But Brandon
- 16:10Speaker 2: Hyde will not be on the hot seat that I
- 16:12Speaker 2: could tell you.
- 16:14Speaker 1: But I think we can both agree. It would be
- 16:16Speaker 1: something if the Orioles lose it, because I think they
- 16:20Speaker 1: came into this season favored a little bit more than
- 16:24Speaker 1: the Yankees. I could be wrong on that, but it
- 16:26Speaker 1: just seemed like they had the momentum coming in and
- 16:29Speaker 1: the Yanks did fall back. Now they're back it's gonna
- 16:32Speaker 1: be a seesaw battle. Hey, you know the one guy
- 16:35Speaker 1: I didn't mention to you, and I still say, uh,
- 16:38Speaker 1: the Yankees won the deadline because of Jazz Chisholm. And
- 16:40Speaker 1: maybe disagree there, but I just think getting Chisholm has
- 16:45Speaker 1: been a bolster to this lineup that they didn't even
- 16:47Speaker 1: know they needed.
- 16:49Speaker 2: Well, obviously, he gives them something that they didn't have.
- 16:52Speaker 2: He gives them speed, which they didn't have. I mean,
- 16:54Speaker 2: the Yankees were I think only the White Sox tole
- 16:57Speaker 2: fewer bases than the Yankees before they got I don't
- 17:01Speaker 2: know what. I really don't know how high the Yankees
- 17:03Speaker 2: have or have gotten higher in the stolen base category,
- 17:11Speaker 2: but they still don't run a lot. The Yankees still, though,
- 17:14Speaker 2: even with Chisholm, if they don't hit home runs, they
- 17:17Speaker 2: have trouble manufacturing runs. And that has been a Yankee
- 17:21Speaker 2: post season problem. It's not because they're pitching, it's really
- 17:27Speaker 2: because of their lack of hitting. And come playoff time,
- 17:33Speaker 2: you know, Aaron Judge is going to be facing a
- 17:36Speaker 2: lot of scrutiny for his post season failures. So he's
- 17:42Speaker 2: gonna have to come through this year for the Yankees,
- 17:45Speaker 2: and I think the Yankees have a have a chance
- 17:47Speaker 2: to obviously win the AL Pennant, no doubt about it.
- 17:52Speaker 2: I mean, I think that bullpen is at their back
- 17:54Speaker 2: end is weak. You know, I'm not the biggest Clay
- 17:57Speaker 2: Holmes fan in the world. I means blown eight to
- 18:01Speaker 2: nine saves. But you know, they're still the Yankees. And
- 18:08Speaker 2: you know, I have Soto and Soda has been you know,
- 18:10Speaker 2: has been remarkable for them. But you know, you got
- 18:14Speaker 2: two of the best three or four players in Major
- 18:16Speaker 2: League Baseball. You're definitely going to be a favorite for
- 18:20Speaker 2: the a deep run in the playoffs. There's no doubt
- 18:23Speaker 2: about it.
- 18:24Speaker 1: All right, Let's uh, one last thing before I switch
- 18:27Speaker 1: gears to other sports going on, like the Olympics and
- 18:29Speaker 1: everything like that. The one last thing I would ask you,
- 18:34Speaker 1: lou Is if the Yanks the Yanks and win the
- 18:38Speaker 1: AL East, and I would say the Oriols to win
- 18:40Speaker 1: the AL East because no one would want to go
- 18:43Speaker 1: into a three game series against the Indian the Guardians.
- 18:47Speaker 1: I think that's where this is headed in a wild card.
- 18:49Speaker 1: I don't know if either team could beat them in
- 18:51Speaker 1: a three game series. Maybe I'm wrong, but I just
- 18:53Speaker 1: feel like you don't want to face the Guardians in
- 18:55Speaker 1: a three game series.
- 18:57Speaker 2: I would. I would say that Cleveland if from my
- 19:03Speaker 2: point of view, Cleveland's not going to scare the Orioles
- 19:07Speaker 2: or the or the Yankees. The Yankees have had postseason
- 19:11Speaker 2: success against Cleveland over the years. I know this is
- 19:13Speaker 2: a different team. I would favor the Yankees or the
- 19:19Speaker 2: Orioles against against Cleveland. I would that's but that's just
- 19:24Speaker 2: my point of view.
- 19:27Speaker 1: Well, I have to see. It is amazing to see
- 19:29Speaker 1: them right up there with the Orioles and the Yankees.
- 19:32Speaker 1: I mean, it's a team that has yeah Naylor, yeah Ramirez,
- 19:37Speaker 1: but they don't have a big, big hitting lineup, and
- 19:41Speaker 1: so that's why it's so interesting they're staying up with
- 19:43Speaker 1: these teams. I guess their pitching is pretty good as
- 19:45Speaker 1: well for the Guardians. Now let's move on because there's
- 19:49Speaker 1: the Olympics, and I'm so glad you didn't boycott it
- 19:51Speaker 1: after the opening ceremonies and after this and the other
- 19:54Speaker 1: because look, at the end of the day, we just
- 19:56Speaker 1: want to see Team USA win, and they've been collecting
- 19:59Speaker 1: goal along the way here. I mean, let's start out
- 20:02Speaker 1: with Katy lead Decky because you and I were in
- 20:05Speaker 1: the suite with John Ladecci in twenty what was at
- 20:09Speaker 1: sixteen when she even qualified with the Olympics and had
- 20:13Speaker 1: those big runs. I mean that was special to be
- 20:15Speaker 1: in the suite the night she qualified. Remember that night, I.
- 20:19Speaker 2: Do, and he is actually he is well, I don't
- 20:23Speaker 2: know if Yeah, he was there for every one of
- 20:24Speaker 2: her races in Paris, John Ladeci and Katyia Decky is
- 20:31Speaker 2: you know, obviously the most decorated Olympic Family female athlete
- 20:36Speaker 2: of all time. And you know with fourteen fourteen gold medals,
- 20:41Speaker 2: she will She's going to carry the flag at the
- 20:44Speaker 2: closing ceremonies. She's an American American.
- 20:47Speaker 1: Icon, simone bios. You got to say, and I've been
- 20:51Speaker 1: saying this for a while watching her performance. She's really
- 20:56Speaker 1: told Larry Nasser and all those who really badgered her
- 21:00Speaker 1: for her mental health over the couple of years, you
- 21:03Speaker 1: know what, screw you all. I'm gonna do this thing.
- 21:06Speaker 1: And she's been doing it. I remember there was a
- 21:08Speaker 1: point she was nervous to come back to the Olympics
- 21:10Speaker 1: and then she just said, let's do it. And I'm
- 21:12Speaker 1: glad she came back because look at what kind of
- 21:15Speaker 1: shine she's brought the team USA. Look at the optimism,
- 21:20Speaker 1: the excitement, and really the hope that she's brought with
- 21:22Speaker 1: her winning all these different medals. It has been fun
- 21:25Speaker 1: to watch her.
- 21:26Speaker 2: Well, like any great athlete, a skill means a lot.
- 21:31Speaker 2: But there's one thing that even if you have skill,
- 21:35Speaker 2: if you don't have this next thing, I'm gonna say,
- 21:37Speaker 2: it could hurt you some own. Biles is a great competitor.
- 21:44Speaker 2: She has that competitive gene like all the great athletes have.
- 21:51Speaker 2: And congratulations to her on a tremendous Olympic career when
- 21:55Speaker 2: the again an American Olympic Icon.
- 22:02Speaker 1: And uh, I know that you've been following that closer.
- 22:05Speaker 1: Now let's talk about basketball. I believe as of this recording,
- 22:09Speaker 1: US is in the you know, they're they're going for gold,
- 22:11Speaker 1: and I'll tell you it's exciting to see it. But
- 22:16Speaker 1: what do you think has it been a team effort
- 22:18Speaker 1: all around? What is your thoughts from USA basketball this year?
- 22:21Speaker 2: Well, the team is obviously incredibly talented and incredibly deep,
- 22:26Speaker 2: so deep that Steve kurkf for got to play Tatum
- 22:31Speaker 2: in the in the first game. But right now, as
- 22:35Speaker 2: this we're recording this on Thursday afternoon. In the semi
- 22:40Speaker 2: final game, they are down eleven to Nicolea Jokic and Serbia.
- 22:46Speaker 2: So uh and if you can happen in these one
- 22:50Speaker 2: and out games and uh, they're down eleven right now
- 22:52Speaker 2: at at halftime.
- 22:54Speaker 1: So do you notice any difference in the way they broadcast,
- 22:58Speaker 1: because I feel like NBC's their usual prime time. They
- 23:01Speaker 1: do air some stuff in the midday, but a lot
- 23:03Speaker 1: of this is shifted to Peacock also right.
- 23:06Speaker 2: NBC's production has been world class, spectacular. They're on all
- 23:13Speaker 2: day live on NBC. They're on USA Network, another one
- 23:19Speaker 2: of the NBC networks. E covers a lot of sports
- 23:21Speaker 2: during the day. You can get any sport you want
- 23:24Speaker 2: on Peacock. You can watch table tennis, you can watch golf,
- 23:31Speaker 2: you could watch any sport you want. NBC has done
- 23:34Speaker 2: a spectacular job and the daytime, the live daytime ratings
- 23:41Speaker 2: are it's been like sixteen a million a day during
- 23:44Speaker 2: the day, so it's been a ratings winner. Obviously, they
- 23:52Speaker 2: could show a lot of things events live during the
- 23:55Speaker 2: day because of the six hour time difference. But this
- 23:58Speaker 2: is great for NBC. I think lead into Los Angeles
- 24:02Speaker 2: in twenty twenty eight, because obviously it'll be in our
- 24:07Speaker 2: country and the time zone. You know, they'll be able
- 24:10Speaker 2: to show stuff in the daytime, in the nighttime live.
- 24:12Speaker 2: And they've done a great job with the night with
- 24:15Speaker 2: the primetime in Paris show giving little anecdotes about certain
- 24:24Speaker 2: athletes what they've overcome. You know, the Christian, the Christian
- 24:30Speaker 2: Faulkner who won the cycling medal. She didn't start cycling
- 24:35Speaker 2: until seven years ago, and she won the gold medal.
- 24:38Speaker 4: And I was watching that race live and Alex she
- 24:43Speaker 4: blew out the competition. I mean she won going away,
- 24:49Speaker 4: and that that was impressive. A Cole Hawker the other day,
- 24:53Speaker 4: I was watching the fifteen hundred meters or aka the
- 24:57Speaker 4: metric mile, his fine old three hundred meters as he
- 25:01Speaker 4: just came back to pull the upset.
- 25:04Speaker 2: That that's that's what the Olympics are all about. The
- 25:06Speaker 2: Olympics aren't about a team USA men's basketball. I mean,
- 25:13Speaker 2: let's face it, Lebron's won all these championship, step curries
- 25:17Speaker 2: on all these championships. The rants won championships, but it's
- 25:21Speaker 2: for these I never heard of Christian Faulkner until the
- 25:23Speaker 2: other day, and that's what makes the Olympics the Olympics.
- 25:28Speaker 2: And uh yeah, it was great watching Novak Djokovic beat
- 25:34Speaker 2: Alvarez the other day and he wanted to win that
- 25:36Speaker 2: gold medal. He wanted to win that gold medal because
- 25:40Speaker 2: that's the one thing he never won. He's been five
- 25:42Speaker 2: Olympics and they never won the gold medal. You saw
- 25:44Speaker 2: the emotion when he won that gold medal. Same thing
- 25:47Speaker 2: for Scotty Scheffler. People say, you know he won the Masters,
- 25:51Speaker 2: he won this, why are you going to the Olympics.
- 25:53Speaker 2: If you saw Scotty Scheffler on the the when he
- 25:57Speaker 2: got his gold medal on the stand, you the emotion
- 26:00Speaker 2: coming out of these guys. So the Olympics are still
- 26:04Speaker 2: the Olympics, big time event, emotional event, and this has
- 26:09Speaker 2: been This has been a great Olympics for with the
- 26:12Speaker 2: exception of the blasphemy at the opening ceremony, this has
- 26:15Speaker 2: been a great Olympics.
- 26:18Speaker 1: By the way, you know, one of our friends of
- 26:20Speaker 1: the podcast has been with us. Kenny Albert is out
- 26:22Speaker 1: there calling and he's having a great time for Respects
- 26:25Speaker 1: over there covering it. It's cool to see our local
- 26:27Speaker 1: talent on the big stage. Isn't it.
- 26:30Speaker 2: Well, I was watching Kenny call. Unfortunately the US USA
- 26:34Speaker 2: was eliminated. That are going for their third straight Olympic
- 26:37Speaker 2: medal in women's water polo, and of course Kenny was
- 26:41Speaker 2: doing that game and his expert play by play as
- 26:46Speaker 2: he could do any sport, and fortunately the US lost
- 26:49Speaker 2: in the shootout. But listen, it was like he's doing
- 26:54Speaker 2: all his life.
- 26:55Speaker 1: Water polo is some sport to call. I mean, William,
- 26:58Speaker 1: when I dine in Queen's College, Queens will score about
- 27:01Speaker 1: ten or eleven goals and actually won. I believe they
- 27:04Speaker 1: won like a Big East champion, Big East, an ECC
- 27:07Speaker 1: championship or Division two title. It was pretty cool that
- 27:10Speaker 1: night to to you know, see them win. It's a
- 27:13Speaker 1: very difficult sport though, to try and get in the
- 27:17Speaker 1: net and you know, in the water. It's it's a
- 27:19Speaker 1: challenge that sport.
- 27:20Speaker 2: It's a it's a very challenging sport. You I mean,
- 27:23Speaker 2: you have to obviously have endurance, you have to be
- 27:27Speaker 2: a decent swimmer, you have to be a decent uh
- 27:31Speaker 2: shot and uh in traffic. You know, there's a lot
- 27:35Speaker 2: there's you know, there's a lot of players in that.
- 27:37Speaker 2: It's not like it's two on two. It's uh, you know,
- 27:40Speaker 2: it's a two full teams of what is it, five
- 27:43Speaker 2: or six players each, and it's it's it's a very
- 27:46Speaker 2: entertaining sport to watch. Uh and uh, unfortunately US will
- 27:50Speaker 2: be playing for the bronze in these Olympics.
- 27:54Speaker 1: At that point though. Any kind of medal in these things.
- 27:56Speaker 1: I know you won the goal, but if you can
- 27:58Speaker 1: still medal, pretty pretty big deal to come home to you. Now,
- 28:02Speaker 1: how about this. You've also seen it where some of
- 28:04Speaker 1: these kids who are college kids are now going back
- 28:08Speaker 1: to campus with their medals. Now that's pretty cool also
- 28:10Speaker 1: to see from this Olympics. I don't remember that from
- 28:13Speaker 1: other years, do you.
- 28:15Speaker 2: Yeah, I do. I mean maybe not as much, but yeah,
- 28:19Speaker 2: that is pretty cool. As you say, there's a lot
- 28:24Speaker 2: of great athletes in this world.
- 28:26Speaker 1: They really specific to report covered them a little bit
- 28:30Speaker 1: and uh, and how they're going back to school. I
- 28:34Speaker 1: love that. I just love when when these stories come
- 28:37Speaker 1: out of the youngsters winning the gold and whatnot.
- 28:42Speaker 2: Uh.
- 28:43Speaker 1: So that's good.
- 28:43Speaker 4: Now.
- 28:44Speaker 1: The other thing about all of this is the politics
- 28:51Speaker 1: of it and then the whole background. I have to say,
- 28:55Speaker 1: I feel like and I don't know if you want
- 28:57Speaker 1: to comment on this. I feel like the this is
- 29:00Speaker 1: happening in the same kind of crisis time that happened
- 29:03Speaker 1: in Rio, and they've tried to gloss over it, but
- 29:07Speaker 1: it's real. They're coming into Paris at a very tough
- 29:10Speaker 1: time and we're seeing that there were blackouts. I think
- 29:13Speaker 1: the second day of the Olympics, I mean that felt
- 29:16Speaker 1: like Rio all over again.
- 29:18Speaker 2: Well, I mean, I think they're doing the best to
- 29:20Speaker 2: keep the athletes away from you know, any political uh,
- 29:26Speaker 2: you know, any political issues, and politics is always going
- 29:32Speaker 2: to be involved when you have when you have these
- 29:34Speaker 2: many countries, you know, involved in an international competition, that
- 29:41Speaker 2: that's a possibility. We've you know, we can go back
- 29:43Speaker 2: in history and the Olympics played a part in many
- 29:47Speaker 2: many Olympics. Let's go back to the nineteen thirty six
- 29:50Speaker 2: Olympics when they wouldn't let the great Marty Glickman. We
- 29:54Speaker 2: know Marty Lioton has a great announcer for the Jets
- 29:58Speaker 2: and the Giants and basketball, but he wasn't allowed to
- 30:02Speaker 2: play to run for the US Olympic team. He was
- 30:06Speaker 2: from Syracuse, I mean, he's from New York, but he
- 30:10Speaker 2: was playing it. He went to school at Syracuse and
- 30:12Speaker 2: couldn't run track and field because he was Jewish. Because
- 30:15Speaker 2: of Hitler, and that's a memorable Olympics in thirty six
- 30:19Speaker 2: because Jesse Owens won multiple gold medals and you know,
- 30:24Speaker 2: shoved it right down Hitler's throat, and so you know,
- 30:28Speaker 2: then you know, we obviously have the seventy two Games
- 30:32Speaker 2: where nine Israeli athletes were slaughtered, you know by Black
- 30:38Speaker 2: September I believe that was the name of the terrorist
- 30:42Speaker 2: group in the seventy two Olympics. That was just I
- 30:47Speaker 2: remember watching it live and Jim McKay that did a
- 30:50Speaker 2: spectacular job in bringing it home and just emoting the
- 30:56Speaker 2: emotions of such a horrible situation. Then we had the
- 31:00Speaker 2: nineteen Eddy Olympics when when United States did not go
- 31:05Speaker 2: to Moscow for the eighty Summer Games, so the eighty
- 31:09Speaker 2: four Games in Los Angeles because of political differences, the
- 31:16Speaker 2: Soviet Union did not send a send a team to
- 31:19Speaker 2: Los Angeles. So we've seen we've seen this, you know,
- 31:23Speaker 2: through the history of the Olympics. Unfortunately, you know, it's
- 31:29Speaker 2: it's said, I mean these Olympics, Russia's not there. Yes,
- 31:32Speaker 2: there's some Russian athletes there, but really there's not a
- 31:37Speaker 2: Russian Olympic team, So unfortunately, that's that's been the way
- 31:42Speaker 2: of the world for a long long time. Alex.
- 31:46Speaker 1: We've actually vented about him overall, but as Lebron James
- 31:51Speaker 1: actually representing the US in an upstanding kind of way,
- 31:55Speaker 1: because we know we can get complaining and all that
- 31:57Speaker 1: other stufbodies here playing NBA. Howses demeanor been overseas in
- 32:02Speaker 1: the Olympics.
- 32:03Speaker 2: His demean has been has been fine the whole the uh.
- 32:08Speaker 2: The one thing about the athletes in these Olympics from
- 32:12Speaker 2: a US point of view, they've all been proud to
- 32:18Speaker 2: be proud to be Americans. They're proud to accomplish and
- 32:22Speaker 2: win the gold medal for the Americans. These athletes have
- 32:25Speaker 2: been spectacular in representing the Night States of America here
- 32:30Speaker 2: as we're on, let's say we got Friday, Saturday, and
- 32:33Speaker 2: Sunday left, so I had no complaints with any American
- 32:37Speaker 2: athlete so for they've done a spectacular job.
- 32:41Speaker 1: Well that thank you for parting. That's good to hear.
- 32:44Speaker 1: All right, one last thing before we wrap up for
- 32:46Speaker 1: Termino's take. I know we can get into football, but
- 32:48Speaker 1: that's not the big other storyline I think the storyline
- 32:52Speaker 1: I want to end with is staying with tennis actually
- 32:56Speaker 1: and rabin Adal not going to compete in the US Open.
- 33:00Speaker 1: Just feel like it's really becoming the end of the
- 33:02Speaker 1: line for him and his career. I mean, maybe he'll
- 33:06Speaker 1: come back, But if he's not going to be in
- 33:08Speaker 1: the US Open, should we prepare for like a retirement
- 33:10Speaker 1: announcement anytime sooner?
- 33:13Speaker 2: Well? I think so, Alex. I think we might have
- 33:15Speaker 2: seen Leander Raffae on the doll. I mean, obviously he's
- 33:20Speaker 2: one of the all time, all time, all time greats.
- 33:23Speaker 2: Uh you know, and but everything, everything comes to an end,
- 33:27Speaker 2: and I think you, I think we will see your
- 33:29Speaker 2: retirement soon. I'm not sure he's gonna be he's gonna
- 33:31Speaker 2: play in the US Open. I mean Andy Murray, they
- 33:36Speaker 2: lost his doubles partner and him lost in the Olympics,
- 33:40Speaker 2: and he's retired. Now. Andy Murray is nowhere close. He's
- 33:43Speaker 2: a great player, but he's nowhere close to uh uh
- 33:46Speaker 2: to Raffae on the doll. But yeah, I think we're
- 33:50Speaker 2: going to see it soon or if he plays in
- 33:52Speaker 2: the US Open, which starts at the end of August.
- 33:55Speaker 2: In a couple of weeks. That might be it, that
- 33:58Speaker 2: might be his his swam.
- 34:01Speaker 1: Well, we'll have to see, Lou It's gonna be quite
- 34:04Speaker 1: an emotional thing. You know, some of these guys might
- 34:06Speaker 1: want to do a retirement tour, but he seems to
- 34:09Speaker 1: just kind of knowing it's time. So well, we'll see.
- 34:12Speaker 1: We'll have to see how that plays out before we
- 34:14Speaker 1: wrap up. It is indeed going to be the USA
- 34:17Speaker 1: you were following it through this conversation, and it'll be
- 34:20Speaker 1: against France. First of all, you know, the kid, the
- 34:23Speaker 1: first round draft pick now going to the gold medal
- 34:26Speaker 1: game for France. What an opportunity for when Bianna and
- 34:29Speaker 1: then on the other side, Steph Curry on the troops,
- 34:33Speaker 1: you know, gutting it out and defeating Serbia. What's your
- 34:38Speaker 1: take as we have on this Saturday, now, it's gonna
- 34:40Speaker 1: be a firing matchup, isn't it.
- 34:44Speaker 2: Well? Today was a tight game, and it was a
- 34:48Speaker 2: nerve wracking game. I really thought at one point it
- 34:52Speaker 2: was going to get away from the United States. I
- 34:54Speaker 2: mean they were down, they were down by fifteen late
- 34:58Speaker 2: in the third, they were down seventeen in the game.
- 35:01Speaker 2: But Steph Curry had his best Olympic game. Ever, he
- 35:06Speaker 2: came within one point, I believe, of tying Carmelo Anthony's
- 35:11Speaker 2: all time single game record of thirty seven. He had
- 35:13Speaker 2: thirty six points. He had nine three pointers. All nine
- 35:18Speaker 2: were key three pointers. They tied up a defense down
- 35:21Speaker 2: the stretch. Serbia with one or two bad possessions in
- 35:26Speaker 2: the last five minutes. But with Durant also was tremendous.
- 35:32Speaker 2: He only he only scored, you know, nine points in
- 35:37Speaker 2: the game, but he had a couple of clutch shots
- 35:41Speaker 2: in the last couple of minutes. That that that mid
- 35:45Speaker 2: range jumper, and I think he's the greatest mid range
- 35:48Speaker 2: jump shooter in NBA history. He's just spectacular. Great, great
- 35:53Speaker 2: win for the United States. Obviously they were heavily favored.
- 35:58Speaker 2: Jokic Yo Yokic did his part, but you know, seventeen points,
- 36:04Speaker 2: eleven rebounds, and he had a bunch of assist he had.
- 36:07Speaker 2: He gotten foul trobably, he had four fouls for the
- 36:09Speaker 2: last seven or eight minutes of the game, and that
- 36:12Speaker 2: that that hurt him. But the US prevailed and Endead
- 36:17Speaker 2: was spectacular. You know, again, maybe he's a naturalized citizen. Again,
- 36:23Speaker 2: maybe some people say, well an American born. Might it
- 36:26Speaker 2: might have been been there, but he spent more than
- 36:28Speaker 2: half of his life in this country. He could have
- 36:30Speaker 2: played for Cameroon, he could have played for France, and
- 36:33Speaker 2: he could have played for the United States, and he
- 36:34Speaker 2: picked the United States. And I'll tell you one thing,
- 36:37Speaker 2: they need him today. He was great on both offensively
- 36:42Speaker 2: and defensively in the fourth quarter. So I think this
- 36:48Speaker 2: was going to be the toughest US game. I think
- 36:50Speaker 2: they'll they'll win on Saturday. Again. Anything can happen in
- 36:55Speaker 2: one game if a team gets hot, like Serbia was
- 36:57Speaker 2: hot from three, they were fifteen to thirty nine for three.
- 37:01Speaker 2: He was for sixteen for thirty two. But it was
- 37:03Speaker 2: a it was a great Olympic basketball game, and it
- 37:07Speaker 2: was it was worth the watch.
- 37:10Speaker 1: I feel like we were watching it together throughout this
- 37:11Speaker 1: whole conversation because you were updating us by the minute
- 37:14Speaker 1: and then right up to the end. All right, one
- 37:18Speaker 1: last thing, and I've seen about this when I looked
- 37:19Speaker 1: at who was on that team, you know Seph Curry
- 37:24Speaker 1: and you know Jason, Jason Tatum and Kat. I mean,
- 37:29Speaker 1: is this the best team USA you've seen in quite
- 37:32Speaker 1: a few Olympics.
- 37:33Speaker 2: Or what I would say? So I would say this
- 37:35Speaker 2: is the deepest. Obviously the ninety two Dream Team is
- 37:40Speaker 2: on a level of its own, but I mean that
- 37:44Speaker 2: was going back to nineteen ninety two. But yeah, I
- 37:47Speaker 2: would say that this is this As the United States
- 37:50Speaker 2: goes for its fifth straight gold medal on Saturday, I
- 37:54Speaker 2: would say this, this is a special team of talent.
- 37:57Speaker 2: It really is. I think the backups could win a
- 38:03Speaker 2: gold medal, the ones who aren't playing all the minutes.
- 38:10Speaker 2: That's how good this team is.
- 38:12Speaker 1: And Steve Kerr coaching this team, you know, I gotta say,
- 38:16Speaker 1: I kind of was around for the Jackson years and
- 38:19Speaker 1: I was a little younger then, but this following it
- 38:22Speaker 1: now and seeing the Steve Kerr success in the pros,
- 38:26Speaker 1: what a perfect choice for the Olympic head coach.
- 38:29Speaker 2: Yeah. Well, they play it, you know. He teaches a
- 38:32Speaker 2: team game, and the United States played a team game
- 38:37Speaker 2: this afternoon. They at twenty five assist on their thirty
- 38:42Speaker 2: five field goals. I mean, Lebron James had ten assists.
- 38:46Speaker 2: The United States shot fifty seven percent from the field.
- 38:49Speaker 2: The rebounds were even thirty three for the United States
- 38:53Speaker 2: thirty four for Serbia. This was an even game. Points
- 38:56Speaker 2: in the paint twenty eight to for the US thirty
- 38:58Speaker 2: for Serbia. This was one or two possessions made the difference.
- 39:03Speaker 2: And the United States had more clutch guys than Serbia.
- 39:10Speaker 2: Did I mean that Serbia had Nikola Jokic, But you
- 39:14Speaker 2: have James, you have Curry, you have Durant's. It's a
- 39:20Speaker 2: tough com it's it's tough to U, tough to be.
- 39:23Speaker 2: Then it's a great win for the United States, that's
- 39:25Speaker 2: for sure.
- 39:29Speaker 1: Well, on that note, lude, thanks for joining me once
- 39:31Speaker 1: again for Terminello's take. Thanks Alex, shall we
