- 0:35Hello and welcome back. This is the Eat More Carbs

- 0:41Thursday about sports nutrition for the girlies.
- 0:44I'm Jenna and I'm the host. Of this podcast and I'm Riley.
- 0:46I'm the founder of Riley Beatty Sports Nutrition.
- 0:48We like to call it around here our BSN.
- 0:50Happy Thanksgiving, we're super excited to talk with y'all
- 0:52today. Before we get into today's
- 0:54episode, we are going to do our high and low.
- 0:56So sharing just a little bit about our week, the good, and
- 0:58the parts we wish had gone a little bit differently.
- 1:00Riley, as always, can you kick us off with high and low?
- 1:03What is your Thanksgiving high and low for the week?
- 1:05So hi is my daughter Charlie is going to be two in January.
- 1:10So this is her second Thanksgiving.
- 1:11And Charlie loves like meat, like as a neat girlie.
- 1:15She loves to also cook right now.
- 1:18So we started off by doing things like we call it cups.
- 1:20And I let her do like her own little science experiment.
- 1:22So she'll like sit next to me when I'm cooking and she'll like
- 1:25put things like Cheerios like into different cups.
- 1:27But she's started to like, really be into cooking.
- 1:31And so she always wants to be involved, which it does take
- 1:35like five times the amount of time.
- 1:36But it's so cute because like, she's like stirring things with
- 1:40her big stick, but she kind of just like hits it.
- 1:43But like she's involved in the cooking process.
- 1:45I don't know. It's just like a really cute and
- 1:47like wonderful thing to share with her.
- 1:49Does she have one of those like helper stools where she can be
- 1:51like countertop height? OK, we have debated this
- 1:54multiple times. Right now we're just like using
- 1:56a chair and like people are probably going to come for me
- 1:58because they say it's dangerous. But like she he stands on the
- 2:01chair just because the problem with things right now is like
- 2:04I'm really reluctant to buy things because we're going so
- 2:07fast with like our development and like what we're interested
- 2:10in. So I don't want to purchase
- 2:11something and then like her be done with it in two weeks.
- 2:14I mean, that makes total sense. I feel like the same way with
- 2:16clothes. You know, you don't want to go
- 2:17and buy like certain brands will put out, like baby clothes and
- 2:20baby shoes. I'm like, I can't imagine
- 2:22spending more on a pair of baby shoes than I spent on a pair of
- 2:24shoes for myself. And they're going to wear them
- 2:26for such a short amount of time. Yes, this could even be Milo,
- 2:30but we have transitioned Charlie out of her like first real kind
- 2:36of shoes. She didn't really need shoes
- 2:37when she didn't walk, right? Like I know people put shoes on
- 2:40their baby, but like your baby doesn't need shoes if it's not
- 2:42walking right? So we're kind of through our
- 2:44like second iteration of shoes because she's grown out of her
- 2:48like first real walking shoes. But the problem is is she loves
- 2:51them. So she goes into her closet and
- 2:54like gets out her little Crocs that are too small and like puts
- 2:57on opposite feet and is like walking around and I'm like,
- 3:00girly, we got you new Crocs. But she's like, these are not my
- 3:03Crocs. Like these are my Crocs.
- 3:05Wait, that's so cute. Though I'll have to send you a
- 3:08picture next time she does it. I guess that's kind of like my
- 3:10low too, is it's not really a low.
- 3:12And I guess like, nothing about Charlie is really low.
- 3:15But I just, she cracks me up right now because she's like has
- 3:18such a strong personality. She just learned like mine.
- 3:22So she'll be like going around and like, we're at the grocery
- 3:24store and she'll point at me and be like my mom.
- 3:27I'm like, yes, yeah, I am your mom.
- 3:29Like, good job. Or she'll be like my bagel.
- 3:31I'm like, we can't have that bagel.
- 3:32Like that's not our bagel. And she'll be like my bagel or
- 3:35like my slide. And I'm like, yes, I'm proud of
- 3:38you for using your words. But then, like, sometimes she
- 3:40just walks around me, like mine, mine, mine, mine, mine.
- 3:43And all I can think about is like the Finding Nemo, like
- 3:45seagulls. Yeah.
- 3:46Yeah. So that's what we're going
- 3:48through right now at the baby household.
- 3:49Lots of Charlie updates. Lots of Charlie updates, how's
- 3:52your week going? Great.
- 3:53My high is that it is Thanksgiving.
- 3:55Like this is the Thursday that is Thanksgiving.
- 3:57And I love Thanksgiving. I think one of the reasons is
- 4:00just because, like, I have so many wonderful, like, childhood
- 4:02memories of Thanksgiving, growing up with my cousins and
- 4:05my family, getting to spend time together.
- 4:07And it's so fun. And even though, like, I'm not
- 4:09at that stage of life anymore and we're here in Arizona for
- 4:12Thanksgiving, we're not with a bunch of family.
- 4:14It still reminds me of all of those like wonderful memories
- 4:18that I have growing up of Thanksgiving.
- 4:20And I look forward to like, carrying those forward someday.
- 4:23So are you staying in Arizona then for the holiday?
- 4:25Yes, we are in Arizona for Thanksgiving, which has its pros
- 4:30because we can be outside and it's a beautiful time of year in
- 4:32Arizona. It's the time of year that
- 4:34people want to be in Arizona. So that's the good part.
- 4:36It's just always kind of sad when you don't get to spend it
- 4:39with like a huge amount of family.
- 4:41And like, that's one of like the biggest things that my family
- 4:43did growing up is that we play like a big game of family
- 4:46football. And I would call it tag
- 4:47football, but it always progressed into more than just
- 4:49tag football, if you know what I mean.
- 4:51And it got a little bit competitive, but it was always
- 4:53so much fun. So I missed those memories, but
- 4:55I'm also like excited to make new memories.
- 4:57Are y'all doing a Turkey Trot? OK, I'm so glad you ask this
- 5:00because I have seen a lot of like, the run clubs in Arizona
- 5:04have teamed up together to do like a massive Turkey trot on
- 5:08Thanksgiving. Obviously, we're recording this
- 5:10a few days before actual Thanksgiving.
- 5:12And I don't know if I want to do that because it just seems like
- 5:15a lot. I don't know if I want to do
- 5:16that. I was walking through my
- 5:17neighborhood. I was walking my dog, George.
- 5:19There is a neighbor of ours that's like hosting a Turkey
- 5:21trot for the neighborhood. And I thought that was so cute
- 5:24to just like a good way to get to know neighbors and just like
- 5:27do something really, really casual Thanksgiving that's not
- 5:31so much of like an organized event with T-shirts and bibs and
- 5:33all of that, but just like a nice thing to do.
- 5:35So I think we might do that. I can't wait until you smoke
- 5:37everybody. Obviously I'm going to show up
- 5:39and be like, OK, well, the competitive part of me has
- 5:41turned on. Meanwhile, my husband will be
- 5:43making friends with everybody and I'll be like, I won.
- 5:45And they'll be like, this isn't even like an actual 5K course.
- 5:48It's literally around the block. But that's OK.
- 5:50Actually really like a lot of the local races, like that's
- 5:53what I was doing a lot of like in preparation for New York and
- 5:57I just like like a local race. I think.
- 5:59I think they're. Fun.
- 6:00I think so too. And like, it's like less
- 6:02pressure and like, everybody's in a good mood and like,
- 6:05everybody is like local and volunteering and like there's
- 6:09never a bathroom line and it's just great.
- 6:10Yeah. And they're usually going to
- 6:12start at like a nice time because you don't have to worry
- 6:14about like a ton of people and like logistics and all of that.
- 6:16Sort of stuff. Yep.
- 6:17You don't have to take a ferry to Staten Island and then wait
- 6:19for three hours basically camping.
- 6:21Yeah, I'm into it, Yeah. Slightly different from the
- 6:25marathon. You just right.
- 6:26Yep. What's your low?
- 6:26My low is probably that it's not the same that it used to be for
- 6:30Thanksgiving for me right now. And that's just hard sometimes
- 6:33when it's just different and holidays, obviously, as we like
- 6:35growing my age, man, that's like what I've been talking about so
- 6:38many times on my high and low recently.
- 6:39But as we age, like traditions just change.
- 6:42And you know, like all of my cousins that I used to play
- 6:45family football with are all like parents and adults now and
- 6:48probably doing all of the cooking anyway.
- 6:50So even if we were together with like a huge chunk of my family,
- 6:53it probably still would different.
- 6:54But sometimes it is like nostalgic and a little sad to
- 6:57like look back on like the the things that used to be so.
- 7:00Are you going to cook this year? OK, as of this moment, I haven't
- 7:03decided a lot of times recently what I've done is I've done like
- 7:06the like kind of prepared pickup from Whole Foods, but I also
- 7:11really don't love Turkey. So today on today's episode,
- 7:15we're kind of building our own performance plates and wishing
- 7:17you all a happy Thanksgiving. But I'm going to share my
- 7:20tentative plan for how I'm going to do Thanksgiving my.
- 7:24OK, you got to go first because I'm so curious.
- 7:26Now tell us. OK, I don't love Turkey.
- 7:30OK. Do you not love like Turkey?
- 7:32Like is it Turkey in general like a Turkey breast sandwich or
- 7:34just like a Turkey dinner? I just don't.
- 7:36Think I like Turkey. Like I was even thinking about
- 7:39how I make a lot of dishes with ground Turkey and I was like, I
- 7:42think I would like this better if I made it with like ground
- 7:45chicken or ground beef. Like I just don't like Turkey.
- 7:48And I think that like I developed using Turkey a lot
- 7:52through a period in my life when I wanted to be be like, quote,
- 7:54UN quote, like ultra healthy and lean ground Turkey is something
- 7:58that's used a lot kind of in that realm or in that
- 8:01conversation of being really thoughtful with what you're
- 8:03eating. And I started to think about it
- 8:05and I was like, I don't know that I actually like this.
- 8:07I think it's just something that I've always done because of
- 8:10that. And I was like, there is nothing
- 8:11that says like when I'm cooking for myself and my husband on
- 8:14Thanksgiving that I need to cook a Turkey.
- 8:16I don't need to do that, especially if neither of us are
- 8:18like huge Turkey fans. So I think what I'm going to do
- 8:22is I'm going to get a rotisserie chicken.
- 8:24I love this. Because I'm like we both like
- 8:26chicken and I don't have to cook it and I can focus my time on
- 8:30making the sides, which I love the side dishes and I love
- 8:33homemade side dishes for Thanksgiving.
- 8:35And then I don't have to worry about making something that
- 8:37neither of us really love or even like, you know, getting the
- 8:41pre marinated 1 and putting it in my oven.
- 8:43Even from Whole Foods. I can just get something that
- 8:45like we both are fine with. I can make chicken leftovers
- 8:48with it and I can focus all of my energy and attention on
- 8:50making the sides that like we do enjoy and we do want to like
- 8:53have as part of our Thanksgiving.
- 8:55So I'm going to get a rotisserie chicken.
- 8:57I'm obsessed with this. I'm obsessed with this.
- 8:59OK, what sides are we doing then?
- 9:02OK, I love like some type of like green bean or broccoli
- 9:06casserole, but this year I'm leaning towards broccoli
- 9:09casserole just because I've been into broccoli recently.
- 9:11So I'm going to do a broccoli casserole.
- 9:13It's actually one that my brother-in-law makes and I think
- 9:16it's like delicious. So I'm going to use his recipe
- 9:18and make that. I also I'm going to make a
- 9:20cranberry salad. It's my mom's recipe and it's
- 9:23actually one that we stole from one of my sister's high school
- 9:25boyfriend's families, but we kind of like adopted it and have
- 9:28made it our own. And it's like a, it's a sweeter
- 9:31cranberry salad type of side. And then I'll probably make some
- 9:35type of like colorful side with like baked carrots or something
- 9:39like that to just have some more color since my casserole with
- 9:42broccoli won't be a ton of actual color in that dish.
- 9:46I love mashed potatoes, so I'm going to do mashed potatoes as
- 9:49my final side. And then my husband really loves
- 9:53sweet potatoes and I am not the biggest fan of sweet potato, but
- 9:57his goal this year is to make sweet potato pie.
- 10:00So I'm going to let him handle that because I don't really care
- 10:03how that turns out. I'm probably not going to eat it
- 10:05anyway, but I'm going to make a dessert that like I want to eat.
- 10:07So I'm going to make chocolate chip cookies because I love
- 10:10chocolate chip cookies. So that's what I'm doing.
- 10:12I'm doing everything that like I want to eat.
- 10:15That's how it's supposed to be. Isn't that crazy?
- 10:17I think I remembered like when I, I don't know, I was 25 and I
- 10:20was like, I can literally eat Thanksgiving whenever I want.
- 10:24If I don't like something for Thanksgiving, like I don't have
- 10:26to make it. Exactly.
- 10:28You can do chicken if you want to.
- 10:29You can do a totally different type of protein if you want to.
- 10:32So if we're looking at my performance plate that I will
- 10:34have on Thanksgiving, I will do chicken, I will do broccoli
- 10:37casserole, I will do some type of a roasted carrot, and then I
- 10:40will do mashed potatoes for my carbohydrate.
- 10:41And then for my fun foods on the side, because we love a fun food
- 10:44and that is always going to be incorporated for me is chocolate
- 10:47chip cookies. I'm laughing because this is
- 10:49going to be the most anti Thanksgiving podcast ever
- 10:52because I don't think I'm having either.
- 10:54Wait, I love it. What are you doing?
- 10:56You're not doing pie or anything or just you're just doing
- 10:58cookies. Well, Nolan will do his sweet
- 10:59potato pie, so forget that. And I'm probably not going to
- 11:02have any of the sweet potato pie just because I'm not that big of
- 11:06a fan. And like we've talked about so
- 11:07many times on this podcast, life is too freaking short to eat
- 11:10food that you don't love. And I love chocolate chip
- 11:12cookies. I also can make like a big batch
- 11:14of them and share them with neighbors, have my husband bring
- 11:17them to work for like the week of Thanksgiving because both he
- 11:20and I will still be working. So I don't know, I feel like
- 11:22that's a nice thing to do. And then I can also freeze any,
- 11:24any of them that I don't eat fast enough.
- 11:25So I can like have them for a little bit longer if I make a
- 11:28big enough batch, which I will make sure I make a big enough
- 11:30batch. But now I've gone back to
- 11:31talking about myself so much. So what protein are you doing
- 11:34for Thanksgiving this year? We're doing brisket.
- 11:36Wait, I love that. Yeah, it's something that we
- 11:38started doing like a couple years ago.
- 11:40There's a really great BBQ restaurant in Charleston and it
- 11:43is one of the things I am sad that we live in Charleston about
- 11:46anymore, but this is a much better place for us.
- 11:48This guy named, it's a Lewis Barbecue and it's really well
- 11:51known for its brisket. So what we started doing a
- 11:54couple of years ago as we do brisket and Turkey, but it's so
- 11:57funny because the Turkey never gets ate because the brisket is
- 12:00so good. So this year we're just mixing
- 12:03the Turkey and we're going to do a brisket and we actually are
- 12:07going to Charlotte for Thanksgiving.
- 12:08So we're going to be with Robbie's family.
- 12:09And I actually really like Turkey.
- 12:12Like I'm a traditional, give me the stuffing, the gravy, the
- 12:16cranberry sauce, like Turkey person.
- 12:18But like I shared earlier, like obviously that whenever I want
- 12:21to eat it, like for dinner. And so we're doing the brisket
- 12:23for Thanksgiving. So that's going to be my protein
- 12:25on my performance plate for Thanksgiving.
- 12:27What sides? Are you guys bringing?
- 12:29What are you responsible? For bringing my daughter.
- 12:31Nice. Yeah, there we go.
- 12:33It is. She is the star of the show, so
- 12:34we anticipated that. But what sides, I guess, are
- 12:37available to you? What else are you putting on
- 12:38your performance plate for color and carbs and maybe even fun
- 12:41foods? So I don't know exactly the menu
- 12:43yet, and because we are recording this a couple days in
- 12:45advance, I don't know what I'm responsible for bringing right
- 12:48now. We will usually probably like
- 12:50bring drinks or dessert, but Robbie's mom does a really great
- 12:53job for Thanksgiving. So kind of just like being her
- 12:56sous chef while we're there and let her kind of dictate the
- 12:58menu. We usually do, you know,
- 13:00traditional kind of Thanksgiving foods.
- 13:01So like stuffing, cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes, hoping
- 13:05for a green bean casserole because I love a green bean
- 13:08casserole. And I feel like with like
- 13:10casseroles, like that's not something I make like on a
- 13:13regular basis. I feel like it just makes a
- 13:15large amount. And so kind of like what you
- 13:17shared about with like some of the desserts, like we're just
- 13:19not going to eat that casserole. Like we just can't get through
- 13:22that as a family in the amount of time that we need.
- 13:24So a green bean casserole or I'm sure there's going to be some
- 13:27broccoli or Brussels sprouts or things like that.
- 13:29And then Charlie loves Mac and cheese.
- 13:31So I'm sure there's going to be some Mac and cheese.
- 13:33My gosh, I love the idea of Mac and cheese on Thanksgiving.
- 13:37Yes. So I'm a huge stuffing girl.
- 13:40I like, love stuffing. So I'm going to have stuffing as
- 13:42my carb. I'll probably do Mac and cheese
- 13:44as my carb too. I'm not a potato person.
- 13:47Like it's just I, I will eat them and like we have them, you
- 13:50know, once or twice a week. But when there's a lot of
- 13:52different carbohydrate options, like I'm not usually going
- 13:55towards a potato and my husband is a potato guy so I know he's
- 13:58always upset about that, but I'm just like, not really a potato
- 14:01person. Do you have a specific type of
- 14:03potato that like you like more, like if you were to be like a
- 14:06baked sweet potato? Or is it just kind of like all
- 14:08potatoes that you're kind of like meh on all?
- 14:10Potatoes like me like, I don't know, like I don't know what
- 14:13like I just would much rather eat like pasta or red or zotto
- 14:16or a tortilla or something like that.
- 14:19I'm just like not really a potato person.
- 14:21Like even fries. Like not my thing.
- 14:24So funny because I feel like so many of our athletes that we
- 14:27work with say that sweet potatoes are their favorite
- 14:29carbohydrate, and every single time I read that I'm like, I
- 14:32would much rather have a bowl of pasta.
- 14:34So many people right now in our period recovery program are so
- 14:36grumpy at us because like you just said, they love potatoes
- 14:39and sweet potatoes. I just, I don't know.
- 14:41I don't know, maybe I used to eat sweet potatoes a lot and I
- 14:44don't know if I just overdid it. I'd hate kind of going back to
- 14:46the conversation about ground Turkey.
- 14:48I just maybe overdid it. They also used to be like, I
- 14:51mean, potatoes are relatively cost efficient when I was in the
- 14:54Dietetic internship, but I had $30 a week for groceries.
- 14:57Like, you know, I was definitely eating sweet potatoes.
- 15:01And so I don't know if I'm just like sick of them, but I'm sure
- 15:04it'll be like a sweet potato casserole maybe or something
- 15:06like that too. It's just just not my thing.
- 15:08If you were to have the option for a sweet potato casserole,
- 15:11would you want it to be savor your sweet?
- 15:12I feel like I don't love sweet things unless it's like dessert.
- 15:16And maybe I'm just so traumatized by like all the gels
- 15:20I consumed in the marathon and like my carb load.
- 15:23But like, I'm like taking a break right now of sweet things.
- 15:26Like I still eat dessert, but like, I, I feel like I need like
- 15:29a savory meal and then like a sweet dessert.
- 15:32Like I eat dessert every night, but I just feel like I need them
- 15:34to be separate and I'm just weird like that.
- 15:36I don't know. It's my brother's preference.
- 15:38I mean, like I've shared before, I'm like not the biggest fan of
- 15:41sweet potatoes. Given the option of like a sweet
- 15:43sweet potato casserole or like savory sweet potato casserole,
- 15:46like I would pick savory every time.
- 15:48What goes into a savory sweet potato casserole?
- 15:50Because I feel like I only see sweet ones.
- 15:52My sister has a great one she makes with like cheddar cheese,
- 15:56bacon and like onion and it's really good.
- 15:59Obviously, like you still get some sweet undertones because
- 16:01the sweet potato is, well, sweet, but it's not like the
- 16:05brown sugar marshmallow pecan situation that I'm like, I don't
- 16:09understand how people like for me, that just doesn't I I'm
- 16:12leaving that I'm skipping right over that.
- 16:15I think this goes back to though, like everybody has
- 16:17different preferences, right? Like everybody has a different
- 16:21feeling like plan that they enjoy.
- 16:23And like, that's why, like, you know, one of the things that
- 16:25we're always asking our athletes is like, what's your favorite
- 16:27food? And like, how can we incorporate
- 16:29that into it? Because every single person is
- 16:31different. And that doesn't mean like like
- 16:33a sweet potato casserole, like it doesn't taste good, but like,
- 16:35it just maybe just not my thing. And we're back to Life's too
- 16:38short to eat food we don't like. Yes, but don't be like, don't be
- 16:41like, I'm not eating that like, right.
- 16:42Like don't be mean about it. You just, you know, you have to
- 16:46like again, life's too short. Exactly.
