Minister Max Lucado – How to Find Peace When the World Feels Chaotic · Max Lucado Daily Sermons

0:01
Speaker 1: War on worry. You can say goodbye to anxiety. You
0:07
Speaker 1: can bid farewell to the threats. God wants to write
0:10
Speaker 1: a new chapter in your life that is marked by
0:13
Speaker 1: increasing peace and diminishing panic. Anxiety comes with life, but
0:21
Speaker 1: it doesn't have to run your life. The Bible has
0:25
Speaker 1: a prescription for inner peace, and this is it. Rejoice
0:30
Speaker 1: in the Lord always. Again, I will say rejoice. Let
0:37
Speaker 1: your gentleness be known to all men. The Lord is near.
0:44
Speaker 1: Be anxious for nothing. But in everything, by prayer and supplication,
0:52
Speaker 1: with thanksgiving, just let your requests be made known to God.
0:58
Speaker 1: And the peace of God which surpasses all understanding will
1:02
Speaker 1: guard your hearts and your minds through Christ Jesus.
1:26
Speaker 1: Lord, we open our hearts now to a new
1:30
Speaker 1: chapter in our lives in which we discover this peace
1:34
Speaker 1: as described by your servant Paul that passes understanding. Forgive
1:41
Speaker 1: the sins of the one who speaks. They are many.
1:43
Speaker 1: And help us to see Jesus, just Jesus. Through Christ
1:49
Speaker 1: we pray. And all the church said, It's a low-grade fear.
1:57
Speaker 1: It's an edginess. It's a cold wind that just won't
2:00
Speaker 1: stop howling. It's not so much a storm as it
2:04
Speaker 1: is just the hunch, maybe even the certainty that one
2:08
Speaker 1: is coming, always coming, always another storm. Sunny days are
2:14
Speaker 1: just an interlude. A person can't relax in life, can't
2:18
Speaker 1: enjoy the sun too much. You can't really let your
2:21
Speaker 1: guard down. Peace is temporary. It's just short-term. It's not
2:27
Speaker 1: so much the sight of a grizzly bear but the
2:30
Speaker 1: suspicion of one. At every turn or two or ten,
2:35
Speaker 1: behind every tree, beyond every bend, there's trouble out there. Inevitable.
2:42
Speaker 1: Just a matter of time until the grizzly leaps out
2:45
Speaker 1: of the trees and bears its fangs and gobbles up you,
2:48
Speaker 1: your kids, your friends, your country, your descendants, your church,
2:52
Speaker 1: your society. So you don't sleep well. You don't laugh much.
3:00
Speaker 1: You don't enjoy the sun. You don't whistle when you walk.
3:06
Speaker 1: In fact, when someone does, you give them a look.
3:09
Speaker 1: That look. That are you naive look. You may even
3:15
Speaker 1: give them a word. Don't you know? There's trouble to
3:20
Speaker 1: be had out there. Airplanes fall out of the sky.
3:24
Speaker 1: Bull markets go bare. Good people turn bad. Haven't you
3:27
Speaker 1: read the news and heard the reports and seen the studies?
3:30
Speaker 1: The other shoe always falls. There's always fine print. There
3:38
Speaker 1: is no free lunch. It's just a matter of time.
3:43
Speaker 1: It's a meteor shower of what ifs. What if we
3:47
Speaker 1: don't get the job? What if I don't get the bonus?
3:50
Speaker 1: What if we don't get the sale? What if we
3:51
Speaker 1: can't afford braces for the kids? What if our kids
3:54
Speaker 1: grow up with crooked teeth? What if because of crooked teeth,
3:57
Speaker 1: they don't have girlfriends or boyfriends or friends? What if
4:00
Speaker 1: someday they're standing on the street corner holding up a
4:03
Speaker 1: cardboard sign that said, my parents never bought me braces?
4:08
Speaker 1: What if? It's... It's a trepidation. It's a suspicion. It's
4:16
Speaker 1: part chicken little and part Eeyore. The sky is falling
4:22
Speaker 1: and it's falling disproportionately on top of me. It's anxiety.
4:30
Speaker 1: What is anxiety? Anxiety is a free-floating sense of dread.
4:40
Speaker 1: Anxiety is a free-floating, ill-defined sense of dread of things
4:49
Speaker 1: that might happen sometime in the future. Fear, by contrast,
4:57
Speaker 1: is an awareness of a concrete threat, a specific object,
5:05
Speaker 1: an event, something that could threaten and does threaten to
5:09
Speaker 1: attack you or hurt you. You fear failing the board
5:12
Speaker 1: exams or not making the job deadline. You fear the
5:16
Speaker 1: income tax payment or the possibility of no date for
5:19
Speaker 1: the prom. That's fear. Anxiety is vague. It's distant. It's
5:26
Speaker 1: not really logical. It's just that sense that something bad
5:30
Speaker 1: always happens and it's about my turn. Fear results in
5:37
Speaker 1: fight or flight. Anxiety results in gloom and doom. Fear
5:45
Speaker 1: is the pulse rate that races when you see a
5:49
Speaker 1: coiled rattlesnake next to the path. Anxiety is the decision
5:56
Speaker 1: to never walk barefooted anywhere in any yard in any
6:00
Speaker 1: part of the world because somewhere in the world there's
6:02
Speaker 1: a rattlesnake you know. Fear and anxiety. Both are a
6:12
Speaker 1: part of life. Both serve a function in life. But
6:15
Speaker 1: fear and anxiety are different. Anxiety is a general angst
6:21
Speaker 1: about life. It's just a general angst about life. In fact,
6:29
Speaker 1: the word anxious has in its first syllable what? Angst.
6:36
Speaker 1: come from the same source. So if you are anxious,
6:41
Speaker 1: then you are full of angst, full of dread, full
6:46
Speaker 1: of trepidation, full of fear. If you are anxious, then
6:52
Speaker 1: you're going through life going shush, shush, shush. That's the
6:55
Speaker 1: sound I make when I'm walking up the stairs. About
6:59
Speaker 1: the 10th step, I find myself running low on oxygen.
7:03
Speaker 1: So I start going shush, shush, anxiety will steal your breath.
7:09
Speaker 1: I remember talking to a minister from the big island
7:12
Speaker 1: of Hawaii, a native Polynesian fellow, and I asked him,
7:16
Speaker 1: why is it that Hawaiians refer to we Westerners as howlies?
7:21
Speaker 1: You ever heard that phrase? Howlies. He said, well, howlie
7:25
Speaker 1: means out of breath. He said in the 1820s when
7:30
Speaker 1: people immigrated to Hawaii, they came with such a rapid
7:34
Speaker 1: pace and work ethic of establishing plantations and building seaports
7:39
Speaker 1: that the Hawaiians gave them a nickname. They're always short
7:43
Speaker 1: on breath. Anxiety will steal your breath. It'll steal your sleep.
7:49
Speaker 1: It'll take your well-being. Anxiety leads to stiff necks, clenched jaws,
7:54
Speaker 1: overactive and or inactive bowels. Anxiety can twist us into
8:01
Speaker 1: emotional pretzels. It can make our eyes twitch, our blood
8:04
Speaker 1: pressure rise, our armpits sweat. One doctor said, if you
8:08
Speaker 1: want to really see the consequences of worry, just read
8:11
Speaker 1: about half the ailments in a medical textbook. Anxiety ain't fun.
8:17
Speaker 1: No wonder the wise man said, worry weighs a person down.
8:28
Speaker 1: Chances are that you or someone you know has a
8:30
Speaker 1: serious struggle with anxiety. According to the National Institute of
8:34
Speaker 1: Mental Health, anxiety disorders are reaching an epidemic proportion. In
8:39
Speaker 1: a given year, 17% of Americans will feel the effects
8:43
Speaker 1: of a panic attack. That is to say, our chest
8:47
Speaker 1: will tighten, we'll feel dizzy and lightheaded, we'll fear crowds
8:50
Speaker 1: and avoid people. According to one research program, anxiety-related issues
8:56
Speaker 1: are now the number one mental health problem among women today.
9:02
Speaker 1: are the second problem among men, second only to drug
9:06
Speaker 1: and alcohol abuse. The United States is now the most
9:10
Speaker 1: anxious nation in the world. Reading from one researcher, stress-related
9:15
Speaker 1: ailments cost our nation $ 300 billion every year in medical
9:19
Speaker 1: bills and lost productivity, while the use of sedative drugs
9:23
Speaker 1: keeps skyrocketing. Just between 1997 and 2004, Americans more than
9:29
Speaker 1: doubled their spending on anti-anxiety medications like Xanax and Valium
9:35
Speaker 1: from $ 900 million to $ 2. 1 billion. The American Medical Association
9:42
Speaker 1: cited a study that expresses the exponential increase of depression.
9:51
Speaker 1: Our generation is three times more likely to suffer from
9:56
Speaker 1: depression as the generation prior. The generation prior, three times
10:02
Speaker 1: more likely than the one prior to that one. Why
10:06
Speaker 1: is this? Our cars are safer than ever. Our water
10:14
Speaker 1: has never been more regulated. Even the air we breathe
10:18
Speaker 1: is monitored. Gangs prowl our streets, but most of us
10:23
Speaker 1: go to sleep every night without the thought of being attacked.
10:26
Speaker 1: Yet to look at our emotional state, you'd think we
10:29
Speaker 1: were living in a battle zone. Curiously, citizens of less
10:37
Speaker 1: developed nations have far less levels of stress. Citizens in
10:44
Speaker 1: developing countries experience anxiety more to the level of one
10:52
Speaker 1: fifth that Americans do. And as one researcher said, when
10:58
Speaker 1: these less anxious developing world citizens immigrate to the United States,
11:03
Speaker 1: they tend to get just as anxious as Americans. Something
11:08
Speaker 1: about our particular way of life is making us less
11:11
Speaker 1: calm and composed. I mentioned that in the United States,
11:17
Speaker 1: 17% of Americans can expect to experience a panic attack
11:22
Speaker 1: during a given year. Guess what that number is south
11:25
Speaker 1: of the border? In Mexico, a country that right now
11:31
Speaker 1: has a reputation for violence. Anybody want to guess?
11:38
Speaker 2: 6.6%.
11:41
Speaker 1: People in Mexico are a third less anxious than people
11:44
Speaker 1: north of the border. I want to go to Mexico.
11:51
Speaker 1: And the news gets worse. I don't want to worry you.
11:59
Speaker 1: But according to one UCLA research team, our college kids
12:02
Speaker 1: are more stressed out and anxious than ever before. In
12:05
Speaker 1: a study that involved more than 200,000 incoming freshmen, students
12:10
Speaker 1: reported all-time lows in overall mental health and stability. As
12:16
Speaker 1: Robert Leahy pointed out, the average high school kid today
12:20
Speaker 1: has the same anxiety level as the average psychiatric patient
12:25
Speaker 1: in the early 1950s. Kids have more toys, they have
12:31
Speaker 1: more tools, have more opportunities than ever, but they're leaving
12:36
Speaker 1: high school wrapped tighter than Egyptian mummies. Why? What's the
12:44
Speaker 1: cause of this anxiety? Well, that's one of our questions.
12:49
Speaker 1: Over the next 10 weeks. In finding a cause, maybe
12:53
Speaker 1: we can find a cure. But we all know some
12:55
Speaker 1: of the causes. Never has society changed so much. Sociologists
13:00
Speaker 1: are telling us that in the last 30 years, our
13:03
Speaker 1: world has seen more change than in the prior 300 years.
13:09
Speaker 1: Can you relate to that? I was walking through a
13:12
Speaker 1: hospital a couple of weeks ago, led by a volunteer
13:15
Speaker 1: lady who knew I was lost, which I usually am.
13:19
Speaker 1: candy striper type, but she was 85 years old. As
13:22
Speaker 1: we were walking, she was checking apps on her iPhone.
13:28
Speaker 1: I said, how do you keep up with all this change?
13:30
Speaker 1: She said, you got to. It's a changing world. Think
13:35
Speaker 1: what has changed since you were born. Most of us
13:39
Speaker 1: were around prior to email. Some kids say, was that
13:45
Speaker 1: before fire or after fire? We've seen astounding changes in
13:52
Speaker 1: the technological world. We've also seen remarkable eruption and disruption
13:58
Speaker 1: in moral values. We've seen world climate change. We've seen
14:03
Speaker 1: the arrival of terrorism. ISIS has come to be a
14:07
Speaker 1: part of our vocabulary. And we're hearing things more quickly
14:11
Speaker 1: than our generations prior ever did. If there's an earthquake
14:15
Speaker 1: in Australia or Nepal... Fifty years ago, we wouldn't have
14:19
Speaker 1: known about it, perhaps ever if we did, not for
14:23
Speaker 1: another week or two. Now we'll care about it. We'll
14:27
Speaker 1: get alerts on our phone. We don't have time to process.
14:32
Speaker 1: We're just inundated with world change, societal change, with news,
14:39
Speaker 1: 24-hour news cycles, most of which are not positive. It's hard.
14:44
Speaker 2: It's hard.
14:46
Speaker 1: In addition to that, we have just all the regular
14:48
Speaker 1: stuff that comes with being a human being. We get sick.
14:53
Speaker 1: We get cranky. We struggle in jobs. We have health issues.
14:58
Speaker 1: We're reminded daily that these bodies are getting weaker and older. Deanland,
15:03
Speaker 1: my wife, came home the other day with an app.
15:06
Speaker 1: An app. Saying, if you take a selfie and send
15:12
Speaker 1: it in, it will guess your age. She was proud
15:19
Speaker 1: because it guessed her 15 years younger than she is.
15:23
Speaker 1: So I thought, well, I'll do it.
15:28
Speaker 3: Duh.
15:30
Speaker 1: I'm 60. It guessed that I was 68. I thought
15:35
Speaker 1: there must be a mistake. I did it again. It
15:37
Speaker 1: guessed I was 73. I did it one more time.
15:40
Speaker 1: I was 78. I said, I'm not going to do
15:43
Speaker 1: it again. It'll think I'm dead. Change coming from all angles.
15:51
Speaker 1: It's enough to make a person anxious. And it's enough
15:59
Speaker 1: to make us wonder, was the Apostle Paul kidding when
16:03
Speaker 1: he gave this anxiety challenge? He said, be anxious for nothing.
16:12
Speaker 1: I would have been happy with worry less. Or be
16:16
Speaker 1: anxious only on Thursdays. But this is a sweeping statement.
16:22
Speaker 1: He says be anxious for nothing. And he uses that
16:25
Speaker 1: word anxious or worry. We've studied it before. It's a
16:28
Speaker 1: Greek word which means to divide the mind. Don't let
16:32
Speaker 1: your mind be all chopped up into pieces. Don't be
16:35
Speaker 1: so caught up in yesterday and tomorrow that you can't
16:37
Speaker 1: live in the present. Which always sounds great on a
16:40
Speaker 1: bumper sticker. But it's hard to apply in life. Right?
16:44
Speaker 2: Right?
16:45
Speaker 1: I mean, you've got to be connected to the past
16:47
Speaker 1: because you're coming out of the past and the past
16:49
Speaker 1: affects the present. And you've got to be prepared for
16:51
Speaker 1: the future, don't you? So exactly what are you trying
16:54
Speaker 1: to say, Paul? Well, it helps us to know that
16:58
Speaker 1: the Greek tense here means perpetually anxious in a state
17:02
Speaker 1: of perpetual anxiety. Anxiety does come with life. But what
17:08
Speaker 1: Paul is advocating here is a life that is not
17:12
Speaker 1: dominated or driven by are consumed by anxiety. There is
17:20
Speaker 1: another translation that helps us. One translation says, don't be
17:25
Speaker 1: over anxious about anything. It's this life of perpetual anxiety,
17:32
Speaker 1: this habit, this thought pattern of negative thoughts and anxious
17:36
Speaker 1: thoughts that the Apostle Paul would like to address. Another
17:40
Speaker 1: translation says, don't let anything in life leave you perpetually
17:45
Speaker 1: in angst and breathless. I made that one up. I'm
17:51
Speaker 1: not a Bible translator. But I think that's what the
17:53
Speaker 1: scripture is trying to say. Don't let anything in life
17:58
Speaker 1: leave you perpetually howly or out of breath, exhausted, or
18:06
Speaker 1: in angst, in a sense of dread. I think worry
18:12
Speaker 1: is a bit like nitroglycerin. In small doses, it's actually
18:16
Speaker 1: good for your heart. But in large doses, it can
18:21
Speaker 1: cause an explosion. Worry in and of itself is not
18:25
Speaker 1: a sin, but it can lead to sin. Mistreatments thereof
18:30
Speaker 1: can cause us to engage in behavior that doesn't honor
18:34
Speaker 1: God and doesn't solve the problem. That's why scripture, I think,
18:38
Speaker 1: has so much to say about anxiety. You have any
18:43
Speaker 1: anxiety in your life? Here's what Jesus says. Be careful
18:50
Speaker 1: or your hearts will be weighed down with the anxieties
18:56
Speaker 1: of life. Are you laughing less than you once did?
19:03
Speaker 1: You find your thoughts increasingly negative and critical. Would those
19:07
Speaker 1: who know you best describe you as overly cautious? Do
19:13
Speaker 1: you always assume something bad is going to happen? Do
19:16
Speaker 1: you never enjoy good news because you know all good
19:19
Speaker 1: news becomes bad news? For fear of running out of money,
19:23
Speaker 1: are you less generous? Do you resent the success of others?
19:29
Speaker 1: Would you on many days rather stay in bed than
19:31
Speaker 1: get up? Do you magnify the negative? Do you diminish
19:40
Speaker 1: the positive? If given the chance, would you avoid any
19:44
Speaker 1: interaction with human beings for the rest of your life?
19:51
Speaker 1: If you answer yes to most of those questions, then
19:55
Speaker 1: I've got a friend I want you to meet. Actually,
19:58
Speaker 1: I've got some words that a friend wrote. They feel
20:02
Speaker 1: like words of a friend because I've turned to these
20:05
Speaker 1: words myself so many times over the years. I would
20:08
Speaker 1: like to nominate this passage for the Scripture Hall of Fame.
20:12
Speaker 1: I don't know where that place is, but on the
20:14
Speaker 1: wall upon which they have hung John 3, 16, the
20:17
Speaker 1: Lord's Prayer, and the 23rd Psalm, someone needs to hang
20:21
Speaker 1: Philippians chapter 4, verses 4 through 8. I call it
20:26
Speaker 1: the anxiety cure. Can you read it out loud with
20:31
Speaker 1: me as the words appear on the screen? Rejoice in
20:35
Speaker 1: the Lord always. Again, I will say rejoice. Let your
20:41
Speaker 1: gentleness be known to all men. The Lord is at hand.
20:46
Speaker 1: Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and
20:50
Speaker 1: supplication with thanksgiving. And the peace of God surpasses all
21:00
Speaker 1: understanding will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
21:17
Speaker 1: Our plan
21:27
Speaker 1: is to unpack this passage phrase by phrase over the
21:31
Speaker 1: next 10 weeks. Could I encourage you to read this
21:35
Speaker 1: passage every day for the next 10 weeks? We've equipped
21:41
Speaker 1: you with a little card. We've made it small so
21:44
Speaker 1: it can go anywhere. I know you may need to
21:47
Speaker 1: put on glasses to read the words. But you can
21:52
Speaker 1: put it on a keychain. You can stick it in
21:54
Speaker 1: a wallet. You can tie it on your shoes. run
21:59
Speaker 1: your shoestring through it. You can tie it around your neck.
22:02
Speaker 1: You can put it on a bracelet. I don't care
22:04
Speaker 1: if you make an earring out of it or a
22:06
Speaker 1: nose ring out of it, but just put it where
22:09
Speaker 1: you can see it. And whenever you sense that anxiety surfacing,
22:14
Speaker 1: pick up this passage. Let the word of scripture be
22:18
Speaker 1: the tool with which you deal with anxiety. Rejoice in
22:23
Speaker 1: the Lord always. In fact, I'd like to ask you
22:26
Speaker 1: to commit. to read this passage every day for the
22:30
Speaker 1: next 10 weeks. If you commit, would you nod? Do this.
22:35
Speaker 1: We've got a nodding monitor going on just to see. Oh,
22:39
Speaker 1: that person's asleep. Don't count him. Would you even be
22:45
Speaker 1: willing to memorize this passage? Would you please consider placing
22:54
Speaker 1: this passage in a permanent place in your heart By
22:58
Speaker 1: committing it to memory. These words contain nothing less than
23:06
Speaker 1: God's remedy to anxiety. It's as if he wrote a
23:09
Speaker 1: prescription that included the words. Here's what you need to rejoice.
23:14
Speaker 1: You need gentleness. You need to remember the Lord is
23:16
Speaker 1: at hand. You need to remember to pray about everything.
23:19
Speaker 1: The peace of God will come your way. It will
23:21
Speaker 1: guard your hearts and minds. God will help you win
23:25
Speaker 1: the war on worry. Some of you have worried so
23:28
Speaker 1: long in your life that you can't imagine life without worry.
23:31
Speaker 1: There is a new day that awaits you, my friend.
23:35
Speaker 1: A new day, a new chapter. It is not God's
23:38
Speaker 1: will that you lead a life of perpetual anxiety. It
23:42
Speaker 1: is not. It is not his will that you face
23:46
Speaker 1: every day with dread and trepidation. It's not his will
23:50
Speaker 1: that you go through life always running out of breath
23:54
Speaker 1: with your mind split. Between yesterday and tomorrow, not leaving
23:59
Speaker 1: you any energy for today. Here is the word of
24:02
Speaker 1: God to you. Jesus said, I have told you this
24:06
Speaker 1: so that you will have peace of mind and heart.
24:12
Speaker 1: Here on this earth, you will have many trials and sorrows.
24:16
Speaker 1: But what? Cheer up. For I have overcome the world. No,
24:22
Speaker 1: God never promises a problem-free life, but he does promise
24:26
Speaker 1: to help us face our problems. This is the message
24:29
Speaker 1: of the book of Philippians. Specifically, it's the message of
24:33
Speaker 1: this cure for anxiety in Philippians chapter 4. Paul uses
24:37
