- 3:42Speaker 8: First off, Miss Ellie Mae Shipley, the toast of.
- 3:45Speaker 4: Cairo, Illinois.
- 3:47Speaker 9: It's always been my hope to play this wonderful town of, uh, Boonville.
- 3:54Speaker 7: Thank you.
- 3:55Speaker 3: And here's Mr.
- 3:56Speaker 6: Frank Schultz.
- 3:57Speaker 2: Mr.
- 3:57Speaker 3: Schultz is the villain in our play.
- 3:58Speaker 10: Aha.
- 4:00Speaker 4: Fine, thank you.
- 4:02Speaker 3: Yes, sir. We're just one big happy family, and I'm
- 4:06Speaker 3: their father. And Parthy here, she's my missus.
- 4:09Speaker 11: Parthy's the mother.
- 4:10Speaker 6: Oh, you big bellowing catfish. Now get those handbills started.
- 4:14Speaker 3: Now, before I pass out the handbills, I want you
- 4:16Speaker 3: to meet the little sweetheart of the South, our songstress.
- 4:19Speaker 6: And leading lady, Miss Julie Laverne.
- 4:24Speaker 2: Ah, Justin Norris, the lover, folks.
- 4:26Speaker 3: And here's her leading man, that celebrated thespian, Mr.
- 4:30Speaker 2: Stephen Baker.
- 4:33Speaker 3: And they will now give you a sample of their
- 4:36Speaker 3: soul-stirring emotion.
- 4:39Speaker 12: No, no, Hamilton, I cannot accept you, for I am
- 4:42Speaker 12: not worthy of your noble desire.
- 4:44Speaker 2: On my mother's name, tell me why.
- 4:46Speaker 13: Why?
- 4:48Speaker 4: Look into yonder room and view the secret of my downfall.
- 4:56Speaker 3: Ah, see the show tonight, folks, and learn her secret.
- 4:59Speaker 14: Tempest and Sunshine, a beautiful.
- 5:02Speaker 15: Drama of tears and laughter.
- 5:04Speaker 3: And as for dancing, here's Frank and Ellie with another sample.
- 5:10Speaker 4: Are you in business for your health?
- 5:11Speaker 6: Now get these handbills out.
- 5:13Speaker 9: Come on, Al.
- 5:14Speaker 10: Get them.
- 5:17Speaker 3: I started out with the handbills, and then suddenly there
- 5:19Speaker 3: was a yell from the crowd.
- 5:21Speaker 6: My first mate Pete had come up to Julia and Steve.
- 5:23Speaker 3: Before I knew it, Pete and Steve were swinging at
- 5:25Speaker 3: each other, and then Pete was lying on the dock. Well,
- 5:31Speaker 3: I guess we fooled.
- 5:33Speaker 2: You that time.
- 5:34Speaker 3: The boys just played another little scene from one of
- 5:36Speaker 3: our shows.
- 5:37Speaker 12: Get back on the boat, Pete.
- 5:39Speaker 3: You too, Steve.
- 5:39Speaker 4: I told him it's nothing.
- 5:40Speaker 6: Time to stay away from my wife.
- 5:41Speaker 4: Oh, Steve, please, please.
- 5:42Speaker 8: My wife, huh? Well, Steve's nothing time.
- 5:44Speaker 4: I told you to get back aboard.
- 5:45Speaker 8: Yeah, sure. Joe.
- 5:47Speaker 3: Take care of it.
- 5:48Speaker 7: Yes, sir, folks.
- 5:50Speaker 3: Just look at him dance. Frank and Ellie Schultz, guide
- 5:53Speaker 3: of the Cotton Rocks.
- 5:54Speaker 7: Please, Mr.
- 5:55Speaker 16: Peake.
- 5:55Speaker 3: Please go back on board.
- 5:57Speaker 11: Shut up.
- 5:58Speaker 8: Where are you going, Mr.
- 5:59Speaker 2: Peake? I'm going to find the sheriff. I've got a
- 6:02Speaker 2: very interesting matter to discuss with the sheriff. Later that day,
- 6:09Speaker 2: we all went into town.
- 6:11Speaker 3: And while we were gone, a young man came down
- 6:14Speaker 3: to the dock.
- 6:15Speaker 7: Take it to the show like that.
- 6:16Speaker 8: Possibly. Does this boat go to New Orleans?
- 6:19Speaker 2: Yep, we wind up there. I'd like to speak to
- 6:22Speaker 2: the owner.
- 6:22Speaker 3: Oh, they're all up in town giving the street content.
- 6:25Speaker 2: Then who's that on deck?
- 6:27Speaker 3: That's Captain Andy's daughter.
- 6:28Speaker 2: That's Miss Noly. Talking to herself?
- 6:31Speaker 3: Oh, she's play acting, mister. Just like she was in
- 6:33Speaker 3: the show.
- 6:34Speaker 8: Oh, I see. All right, if I wait. Go right aboard, mister.
- 6:38Speaker 3: Captain Andy will be back pretty soon now.
- 6:42Speaker 6: Is there no mercy in your evil soul?
- 6:45Speaker 12: No kindness in your ugly heart? Oh, sir, I beg
- 6:49Speaker 12: you on bended knee, stop giving my little daughter diamonds
- 6:54Speaker 12: and go home.
- 6:55Speaker 6: To your wife.
- 6:57Speaker 3: Bravo, bravo.
- 6:59Speaker 2: Your performance is magnificent. Small wonder you're the leading lady.
- 7:04Speaker 4: Oh, but I'm not.
- 7:05Speaker 10: You're not?
- 7:07Speaker 4: I'm not even a member of the company.
- 7:09Speaker 6: Well, that is not professionally.
- 7:11Speaker 2: But you want to be, don't you?
- 7:12Speaker 4: Oh, yes. Well, I mean.
- 7:14Speaker 2: Why do you want to be an actress?
- 7:16Speaker 4: Why?
- 7:17Speaker 2: Well.
- 7:19Speaker 12: Well, an ordinary person wouldn't understand.
- 7:22Speaker 17: No?
- 7:23Speaker 2: You want to be an actress because it makes everything
- 7:25Speaker 2: come true. Every exciting thing you've ever dreamed about. Even
- 7:29Speaker 2: if it's make-believe, isn't that it?
- 7:30Speaker 4: Yes, that is it, but how did you know?
- 7:32Speaker 18: Well, for instance, right now, you and I could be
- 7:35Speaker 18: Romeo and Juliet, or Elizabeth and Essex, or.
- 7:38Speaker 4: Or Lady Southwake and Hamilton Barsdale.
- 7:41Speaker 10: Who?
- 7:42Speaker 4: They're in our play, in Tempest in the Sunshine.
- 7:45Speaker 2: Oh, yes, of course.
- 7:47Speaker 4: As a matter of fact, there couldn't be anybody talking
- 7:49Speaker 4: like this. We haven't been properly introduced.
- 7:52Speaker 2: Well, that makes no difference in make-believe.
- 7:55Speaker 4: Well, I suppose that's true.
- 7:58Speaker 2: So we could make believe it was just falling in
- 8:01Speaker 2: love at first sight.
- 8:12Speaker 8: We could make believe that you love me.
- 8:15Speaker 15: Love is fine, keep your mind in pretending.
- 8:24Speaker 19: Couldn't you?
- 8:25Speaker 8: Couldn't I?
- 8:26Speaker 2: Couldn't you leave me?
- 8:43Speaker 8: In a phantom kiss or to a dream.
- 8:47Speaker 7: Might as well make it real I don't know.
- 8:53Speaker 10: What to tell.
- 9:25Speaker 4: If you want to see my father.
- 9:27Speaker 2: Oh, yes. I see they're coming back from town. To
- 9:31Speaker 2: our next meeting, Noli.
- 9:37Speaker 3: My daughter says you want to see me, son.
- 9:39Speaker 6: I'll take care of this, Hawks.
- 9:41Speaker 2: Allow me, ma'am.
- 9:42Speaker 18: Gaylord Ravenel of the Tennessee Ravenels.
- 9:46Speaker 8: I understand that you're heading for Newark.
- 9:47Speaker 6: And we don't carry passengers.
- 9:50Speaker 18: Oh, but I'm an actor. And while I don't have
- 9:53Speaker 18: my notices here with me, I.
- 9:54Speaker 20: An actor without notices.
- 9:56Speaker 6: A gambler ain't be more like it.
- 9:59Speaker 4: We're full up, Mr.
- 10:00Speaker 8: Ravenel.
- 10:01Speaker 4: Sorry.
- 10:02Speaker 2: Well, it just doesn't seem to be my day, does it?
- 10:05Speaker 2: My thanks just the same.
- 10:07Speaker 6: Andy, where's Magnolia?
- 10:08Speaker 8: Noly?
- 10:09Speaker 2: Oh, in Julie's cabin, I suppose.
- 10:11Speaker 6: Well, tell her to help Queenie with the supper.
- 10:13Speaker 4: Yes, ma'am.
- 10:14Speaker 21: Noly!
- 10:15Speaker 6: Your ma wants you to help Queenie with the supper.
- 10:18Speaker 4: In a minute, Papa. Did anything happen in town? I mean,
- 10:27Speaker 4: Steve and Pete?
- 10:28Speaker 21: No, honey, nothing. We didn't even see Pete.
- 10:31Speaker 4: Julie, you love Steve so much, don't you?
- 10:36Speaker 21: That rattle-brained mule. Yes, honey, I love him.
- 10:39Speaker 4: And golly, how he loves you.
- 10:42Speaker 22: Well, now you go ahead and tell me about your
- 10:44Speaker 22: handsome stranger. That's what you came in for, isn't it?
- 10:48Speaker 4: Julie, he's so different. Oh, River, Dan is a thick
- 10:51Speaker 4: as locust, Angel.
- 10:52Speaker 19: Oh, I know.
- 10:53Speaker 4: I know about men.
- 10:54Speaker 23: Oh, yes?
- 10:54Speaker 4: But then when he stood there and smiled... Julie, why
- 10:59Speaker 4: do you love Steve so much?
- 11:01Speaker 2: Why?
- 11:02Speaker 21: Well, I love him because.
- 11:04Speaker 6: Well, I don't.
- 11:06Speaker 21: Even know why.
- 11:07Speaker 22: He's not a very good actor on stage. Matter of fact,
- 11:11Speaker 22: he's not a very good actor off stage.
- 11:14Speaker 21: But he's all mine.
- 11:16Speaker 10: There.
- 11:17Speaker 4: Could you ever think of loving anyone else?
- 11:19Speaker 5: No.
- 11:20Speaker 4: No, I couldn't.
- 11:22Speaker 7: Not ever.
- 11:25Speaker 4: Fish gotta swim.
- 11:28Speaker 12: Birds gotta fly.
- 11:33Speaker 23: I gotta love one man till I die.
- 11:40Speaker 13: Can't help loving that man.
- 11:55Speaker 7: He's lazy, tell me he's slow. Tell me I'm crazy,
- 12:03Speaker 7: maybe I'm wrong. Can't help loving.
- 12:13Speaker 21: That man of mine.
- 12:29Speaker 10: But when he comes back.
- 12:33Speaker 7: That day is.
- 12:41Speaker 4: Back.
- 12:42Speaker 7: The sun will shine.
- 12:49Speaker 4: He can come home.
- 12:59Speaker 23: Ain't no home to me.
- 13:07Speaker 13: In hell.
- 13:11Speaker 21: In that land.
- 13:24Speaker 4: Oh, Julie, that's wonderful. I think I could feel that way, too.
- 13:28Speaker 21: I'll bet you will, someday.
- 13:35Speaker 3: That night, about an hour before showtime, I was selling
- 13:38Speaker 3: tickets when Parfait sent Joe after me. I couldn't figure it.
- 13:41Speaker 3: Sending for me when I was taking in money?
- 13:43Speaker 22: Get in here, Hawks.
- 13:45Speaker 6: I could have told you there'd be trouble with Julie.
- 13:49Speaker 2: It's Pete, Captain Andy.
- 13:50Speaker 4: He just came aboard with the sheriff. Sheriff?
- 13:52Speaker 2: I heard him talking about Miss Julie.
- 13:54Speaker 6: About her and Mr.
- 13:55Speaker 15: Steve.
- 13:55Speaker 6: Well, there's Steve now.
- 13:56Speaker 2: Come in, will you, Captain? You too, Mrs. Hawks.
- 13:58Speaker 3: Hurry, please. Look, would somebody mind telling me.
- 14:00Speaker 2: I'm sorry, but there's no time. I want you to
- 14:02Speaker 2: witness this.
- 14:02Speaker 21: It's all right, Captain Andy.
- 14:04Speaker 2: Captain Andy, that's a knife he's got. Steve, it won't
- 14:06Speaker 2: hurt much, honey. Just scratch on your hand. He's kissing
- 14:10Speaker 2: her hand where he cut it.
- 14:11Speaker 11: Right in there, Sheriff.
- 14:12Speaker 6: Having a woman.
- 14:13Speaker 8: Captain Hawks?
- 14:14Speaker 24: Well.
- 14:15Speaker 3: Sorry, but I got some unpleasant news for you. It's
- 14:17Speaker 3: a criminal offense in this state for a white man
- 14:19Speaker 3: to marry a Negro woman. Well, what's that got to do...
- 14:21Speaker 3: The name of the white man is Steve Baker. The
- 14:23Speaker 3: name of the Negro is Julie Laverne.
- 14:25Speaker 21: I'm Julie Laverne.
- 14:26Speaker 2: The record says you were born in this county. Your
- 14:28Speaker 2: father was white, your mother was black. Is that right?
- 14:31Speaker 21: Yes, that's right.
- 14:37Speaker 2: You two better get your things.
- 14:38Speaker 3: You wouldn't call a man white that's got Negro blood
- 14:40Speaker 3: in him, would you? In these parts, Miss D, one
- 14:43Speaker 3: drop of black blood makes you black.
- 14:44Speaker 2: Well, I've got more than a drop in me. He's lying.
- 14:47Speaker 3: Ask Captain Hawks and his wife. They can swear I've
- 14:49Speaker 3: got Negro blood in me right this minute. Then how
- 14:51Speaker 3: come this first mate here comes and tells me that
- 14:53Speaker 3: he's a white man?
- 14:54Speaker 4: I'll tell you why. Because he's a no-count river rat.
- 14:56Speaker 3: No, no, no.
- 14:57Speaker 4: He's been bothering Julie, and she has nothing to.
- 14:59Speaker 2: Do with him, and that's why he's... She's telling the truth, Sheriff.
- 15:01Speaker 2: As for you, Pete, you're fired.
- 15:03Speaker 4: Here and now. Come along, Steve.
- 15:05Speaker 21: The show, we've got to get ready.
- 15:06Speaker 2: No, no, you don't. Word of this will be all
- 15:08Speaker 2: over town in no time.
- 15:09Speaker 4: But Julie's our star.
- 15:11Speaker 2: If she don't go on, the people.
- 15:12Speaker 3: It'll be a lot worse if she and her husband
- 15:14Speaker 3: are here when the people find out. Take my advice
- 15:16Speaker 3: and get down the river as soon as you can.
- 15:18Speaker 2: Come on, darling. We'll pack up and leave.
- 15:23Speaker 8: Joe? Yes, sir, Captain?
- 15:26Speaker 2: Tell Wendy to fire the boilers. We'll be leaving tonight.
- 15:30Speaker 10: Julie.
- 15:37Speaker 4: Julie, wait.
- 15:38Speaker 6: Your ma wouldn't like this, honey.
- 15:40Speaker 22: And besides, there's Steve waiting for me on the dock.
- 15:43Speaker 4: Julie, I had to say goodbye.
- 15:44Speaker 21: Thanks, honey.
- 15:46Speaker 4: Julie, nothing's changed.
- 15:49Speaker 21: Nothing. Noli, Noli, always true.
- 15:53Speaker 4: You'll write and let me know how things go?
- 15:56Speaker 21: I'll never forget my Noli. Now you stay happy, honey.
- 16:00Speaker 4: Oh, Julie. Julie. Julie.
- 16:09Speaker 7: Miss Julie.
- 16:13Speaker 4: Goodbye, Joe.
- 16:14Speaker 21: You ride the river, Joe.
- 16:16Speaker 8: Oh, Miss Julie, I.
- 16:17Speaker 9: Wish as I could.
- 16:17Speaker 10: Julie!
- 16:18Speaker 15: Come on, honey, we've got to hurry.
- 16:20Speaker 21: You keep riding that old river, Joe boy.
- 16:24Speaker 8: Keep riding the river, she said.
- 16:34Speaker 2: Keep riding this old river.
- 16:38Speaker 16: There's an old man called Mississippi That's the old man
- 16:48Speaker 16: that I wants to be What does he care if
- 16:57Speaker 16: the world's got trouble What does he care if the
- 17:07Speaker 16: land ain't free.
- 17:25Speaker 8: He must know something, but don't say nothing. He just
- 17:35Speaker 8: keeps rolling.
- 17:37Speaker 13: He keeps rolling.
- 17:39Speaker 8: It's all rolling along. He don't plant taters. He don't
- 17:53Speaker 8: plant cotton. And then that plantain is soon forgotten. But oh,
- 18:05Speaker 8: It just keeps rolling.
- 18:14Speaker 3: Along.
- 18:15Speaker 15: You and me, we sweat and strain. Body all aching
- 18:21Speaker 15: and wracked with pain.
- 18:23Speaker 7: Oh, that's fun.
- 18:25Speaker 15: If that fails, you get a little drunk.
- 18:33Speaker 11: Angel lands in jail.
- 18:49Speaker 8: I get weary and sick of trying. I'm tired of living.
- 19:00Speaker 7: I'm tired of living.
- 19:10Speaker 24: It's just a drama.
- 19:17Speaker 7: In a few moments, we'll return with Act Two of
- 19:39Speaker 7: Show Boat.
- 19:41Speaker 2: Now our producer, Mr.
- 19:42Speaker 8: William Keeley.
- 19:43Speaker 21: Act II of Showboat.
- 19:44Speaker 5: Winner of Photoplay Magazine's Gold Medal Award. Starring Catherine Grayson
- 19:48Speaker 5: as Magnolia... Ava Gardner as Julie, Howard Keel as Gaylord Ravenel,
- 19:54Speaker 5: Mods Champion as Ellie, Gower Champion as Frank, William Warfield
- 19:59Speaker 5: as Joe, and J.C.
- 20:00Speaker 3: Flippen as Captain Andy.
- 20:07Speaker 2: By early morning, we were well down the river.
- 20:10Speaker 3: But there wasn't a smile to be found anywhere aboard
- 20:12Speaker 3: the Clapton Blossom Showboat.
- 20:15Speaker 12: So I figured we might just as well talk it
- 20:18Speaker 12: over here and.
- 20:19Speaker 6: Now at breakfast.
- 20:20Speaker 9: We just don't have a show with our leading man
- 20:22Speaker 9: and leading lady.
- 20:24Speaker 2: What's more.
- 20:25Speaker 6: Morning, Posse, dear.
- 20:26Speaker 10: Good morning, all.
- 20:28Speaker 2: Everybody bright and chipper this morning?
- 20:30Speaker 6: Bright and chipper. How are we going to put on
- 20:32Speaker 6: a show?
- 20:33Speaker 4: Just answer me that.
- 20:34Speaker 2: Ah, patience, Pocky, patience. I have a little surprise.
- 20:37Speaker 6: For one and all. It seems that.
- 20:40Speaker 3: Last night, just before we left Boonville, somebody came aboard
- 20:43Speaker 3: this vessel.
- 20:44Speaker 6: Folks, meet our new leading man, Mr.
- 20:47Speaker 2: Gaylord Ravenel. Ladies and gentlemen, it is an honor.
- 20:51Speaker 8: You've met my wife, I believe.
- 20:53Speaker 2: A repeated pleasure, Mrs.
- 20:54Speaker 3: Hawks.
- 20:54Speaker 2: And my daughter, Magnolia.
- 20:56Speaker 4: Good morning.
- 20:58Speaker 6: So you've solved all our problems, have you? Who are
- 21:02Speaker 6: we going to get for a leading lady? Your daughter, madam.
- 21:05Speaker 3: Now listen, Parthy, we can't get a leading lady till
- 21:09Speaker 3: we get to New Orleans. And think of all the
- 21:11Speaker 3: money we'd lose.
- 21:12Speaker 4: Yes, Mama, all that cotton crop money.
- 21:14Speaker 2: That's a lot to turn down, Mrs.
- 21:15Speaker 4: Hawks.
- 21:16Speaker 6: Besides, we'd never find anybody prettier than Noli. And what's more,
- 21:20Speaker 6: she can sing and act just as grand. Ellie, I
- 21:23Speaker 6: thank you and thank the Hushop.
- 21:25Speaker 9: I'm dead set against my daughter performing in public.
- 21:29Speaker 4: Oh, Mama, please.
- 21:30Speaker 6: And Frank and I, well, we'll all help her as
- 21:33Speaker 6: much as we can. Oh, come on. All right, all right.
- 21:38Speaker 6: But mind your hopes, just till we get to New Orleans.
- 21:41Speaker 3: There'll be a rehearsal of Tempest and Sunshine in exactly
- 21:45Speaker 3: five minutes. Sorry, Gaylord, Romanoff, and Magnolia Hall.
- 21:56Speaker 10: Yes, sir.
- 21:57Speaker 3: Right from their first performance, Noly and Ravenel were the
- 22:00Speaker 3: hit of our show. But then as the weeks went by,
- 22:03Speaker 3: I knew there was something more between them than just
- 22:07Speaker 3: play acting. And sooner or later, Parthy was going to
- 22:10Speaker 3: find out.
- 22:11Speaker 6: Don't lie to me, Magnolia. I saw you with my
- 22:14Speaker 6: own eyes making love to him. Kissing him.
- 22:16Speaker 23: Oh, my.
- 22:17Speaker 4: Mrs.
- 22:18Speaker 8: Hawks, please.
- 22:19Speaker 2: May I talk to you?
- 22:20Speaker 6: You can do just one thing for me. Get yourself ashore. Now. Now,
- 22:25Speaker 6: hold on, Parthy.
- 22:25Speaker 4: Hold on.
- 22:26Speaker 18: Captain, ma'am.
- 22:27Speaker 2: I'm asking Noli to be my wife.
- 22:29Speaker 4: You?
- 22:30Speaker 6: A no-account river gambler? How dare you?
- 22:33Speaker 10: Gambler?
- 22:34Speaker 2: Yes, I'm a gambler. But, Captain Andy, you know yourself
- 22:37Speaker 2: that Noli is meant for the life and happiness of
- 22:39Speaker 2: the world. I love her. And I'm going to see
- 22:42Speaker 2: that she gets them.
- 22:43Speaker 12: And you, my own daughter, are you proud and happy,
- 22:47Speaker 12: looking forward.
- 22:48Speaker 6: To a life with such as him?
- 22:50Speaker 4: Yes, Mama, I am.
- 22:51Speaker 12: Then that's a sight I never want to see again.
- 22:56Speaker 6: Oh, Mama.
- 22:58Speaker 2: I'll always love you, Noli, no matter what you decide
- 23:02Speaker 2: to do.
- 23:03Speaker 3: As for you, son, I hope it's not just Saturday
- 23:07Speaker 3: night with a cold Monday morning to follow you.
- 23:14Speaker 2: Noly, are you still sure? Still sure this.
- 23:17Speaker 3: Is what you want?
- 23:18Speaker 2: Maybe you are taking a hundred-to-one chance.
- 23:22Speaker 4: I want to be your wife more than anything in
- 23:24Speaker 4: the world.
- 23:25Speaker 2: Mrs. Gaylord Ravenhall.
- 23:29Speaker 8: You!
- 23:34Speaker 20: Here in my heart, where you'll be all.
- 23:43Speaker 7: The day. I will not let you away. I won't
- 23:51Speaker 7: stay a day with you. Yeah. Far on the mountainside.
- 24:13Speaker 6: You taught me to see.
- 24:15Speaker 4: One truth for all the truth Why never again?
- 25:10Speaker 3: They got married and they went away. Oh, they're living
- 25:14Speaker 3: in Chicago now at the Sherman House Hotel. And everything
- 25:18Speaker 3: in the world a girl can want, Ravenel bought for her.
- 25:22Speaker 3: But there comes a time in a gambler's life when
- 25:25Speaker 3: the cards and the dice and the wheels start turning
- 25:29Speaker 3: against it.
- 25:32Speaker 2: Dolly, stop looking so serious. Now put those things right
- 25:35Speaker 2: back where they belong.
- 25:36Speaker 4: But darling, the jewelries were thousands of dollars. You can
- 25:39Speaker 4: sell them and then we'll.
- 25:40Speaker 18: Stop giving me your diamonds, madam, and go home to
- 25:43Speaker 18: your husband's arms.
- 25:45Speaker 4: Gay, won't you listen to me? Won't you be sensible
- 25:48Speaker 4: for just one.
- 25:49Speaker 2: Oh, come here, you. Do you love me?
- 25:53Speaker 4: Yes, but I still think.
- 25:55Speaker 2: All right, angel, all right, I'll take your pretty. But
- 25:58Speaker 2: I'll get another steak and we'll be walking on tall
- 26:00Speaker 2: air again. Do you trust me, Noli?
- 26:03Speaker 13: Always.
- 26:05Speaker 2: Just don't ever stop loving me, huh? If ever I
- 26:08Speaker 2: catch you batting your eyes at another.
- 26:11Speaker 24: Fella, I'll... I know, darling.
- 26:12Speaker 23: I know.
- 26:12Speaker 16: I know.
- 26:13Speaker 24: © BF-WATCH TV 2021 © BF-WATCH TV 2021.
- 27:03Speaker 19: That's why I love you.
- 27:20Speaker 3: Every week, regular, we'd get a letter from Noli telling
- 27:23Speaker 3: us how happy she was and how well Gail was doing.
- 27:27Speaker 3: The only thing that changed were the addresses. But there
- 27:30Speaker 3: just wasn't any way for us to know that the
- 27:32Speaker 3: suite in the Sherman house is now just a couple
- 27:35Speaker 3: of rooms in the shabbiest part of town.
- 27:39Speaker 2: So, to tell the truth, honey, our stake's just about gone.
- 27:43Speaker 2: My luck's sure been running shallow.
- 27:45Speaker 4: But there'll be another game tonight, won't there, Gay? There
- 27:47Speaker 4: always is.
- 27:48Speaker 2: I'll get to them, Noli. I almost hit the bonanza
- 27:50Speaker 2: last night. If only that third queen had came through.
- 27:53Speaker 4: What does she look like, Gay?
- 27:55Speaker 13: Your queen?
- 27:56Speaker 2: Oh, Noli, now look. If you think there's anything going
- 28:01Speaker 2: on with me and some other woman.
- 28:04Speaker 6: I know there's no other woman.
- 28:05Speaker 4: No flesh and blood woman. I almost wish there were.
- 28:08Speaker 12: I'd know how to fight then. But I can't fight
- 28:11Speaker 12: this lady luck of yours. This fancy queen in her
- 28:14Speaker 12: green felt dress. She's with me, Gaye. For days and
- 28:18Speaker 12: nights now, weeks and months. She's with me and I
- 28:21Speaker 12: won't be with anymore.
- 28:22Speaker 6: I just won't.
- 28:23Speaker 2: Now, honey, look. Look, tomorrow's Christmas. I've still got a
- 28:26Speaker 2: little money left. We can go out and.
- 28:28Speaker 4: Tomorrow isn't Christmas. No, it isn't. It's just like Papa said.
- 28:33Speaker 4: It's going to be Monday. It's all just like Papa said.
- 28:36Speaker 2: No, Lee.
- 28:37Speaker 4: You love me, don't you? Only not enough, Gay. Not
- 28:41Speaker 4: quite enough. That third queen, she's the lucky one.
- 28:46Speaker 2: What does that mean?
- 28:48Speaker 4: It means that you're a weak man. You're weak, you're weak,
- 28:52Speaker 4: you're weak.
- 28:52Speaker 18: Noli, I've said enough of this.
- 28:54Speaker 4: Take your hands off me. Take your hands off me
- 28:57Speaker 4: before I hate you.
- 29:00Speaker 18: Well, we'll have to do something about this, won't we?
- 29:07Speaker 3: Noli couldn't stay angry at Gay.
- 29:09Speaker 2: Nah, not for long.
- 29:12Speaker 3: She came back to the rooming house. But as she
- 29:14Speaker 3: climbed up the stairs, she heard voices.
- 29:17Speaker 2: You sure you haven't any other rooms you can show us?
- 29:20Speaker 6: Well, this is all at the moment, Mr. Schultz, but
- 29:22Speaker 6: the rent's very reasonable. Oh, Frank, we can afford better
- 29:25Speaker 6: than this. Well, if you should change.
- 29:27Speaker 17: Oh, Mrs.
- 29:28Speaker 6: Ravenhall, I thought that you.
- 29:29Speaker 4: Ellie!
- 29:30Speaker 10: Oh, no!
- 29:31Speaker 7: Just look at her!
- 29:32Speaker 2: Well, how are you?
- 29:33Speaker 4: Oh, no, me, no! Oh, there are no two people
- 29:35Speaker 4: I'd rather see in this whole world. How are you?
- 29:38Speaker 3: Well, we left the cotton blouse but I guess your
- 29:40Speaker 3: pa wrote you about that.
- 29:41Speaker 4: Oh, but that was months ago.
- 29:42Speaker 6: We've been doing pretty good, Noly. We're booked into the
- 29:45Speaker 6: truck again.
- 29:46Speaker 4: Oh, Ellie, how wonderful.
- 29:47Speaker 2: We opened New Year's Eve.
- 29:48Speaker 6: You see, we just got into town. We were going
- 29:49Speaker 6: to drop in on you over at.
- 29:51Speaker 4: The Sherman house.
- 29:52Speaker 10: You.
- 29:53Speaker 2: Living here, Noli?
- 29:54Speaker 4: Oh, well, just temporarily.
- 29:56Speaker 19: I'll call Gay.
- 29:57Speaker 4: Oh, Gay. Gay, darling, get up and see who's here.
- 30:01Speaker 6: Well, seeing as you all know each other, I'll drop
- 30:04Speaker 6: by later.
- 30:07Speaker 4: He's not in the bedroom. He's gone. Ellie, he left
- 30:14Speaker 4: a note. Oh, no.
- 30:17Speaker 6: What is it, Noli?
- 30:18Speaker 9: Noli, let me read it, honey. My darling, by the
- 30:24Speaker 9: time you read this, I will be on a train
- 30:27Speaker 9: heading west.
- 30:29Speaker 4: What you said was true from the beginning.
- 30:33Speaker 6: Oh, Frank.
- 30:35Speaker 3: Remember our good times and forget all the rest so
- 30:40Speaker 3: that at least you will never hate me.
- 30:43Speaker 2: Gay.
- 30:44Speaker 10: Gay.
- 30:46Speaker 6: Oh, Noly, Noly.
- 30:50Speaker 4: Merry Christmas to you all.
- 30:54Speaker 6: Oh, Gary, Gary.
- 30:55Speaker 3: Frank and Ellie had to get over to that cabaret,
- 31:02Speaker 3: the Trocadero.
- 31:03Speaker 2: They took Noly with them.
- 31:05Speaker 3: There was a rehearsal going on, and the management was
- 31:08Speaker 3: having a little trouble with one of the singers.
- 31:11Speaker 6: Now, look, Julie, I'm trying to put on a show.
- 31:12Speaker 5: If you've got a drink, would you mind doing it
- 31:14Speaker 5: in your dressing room?
- 31:14Speaker 4: Oh, but, Jake, this is a holiday season.
- 31:17Speaker 8: It's over for you, Julie.
- 31:18Speaker 3: This is work.
- 31:19Speaker 6: You promised, remember?
- 31:19Speaker 22: Oh, yeah, that's right.
- 31:22Speaker 3: That's a good girl.
- 31:23Speaker 2: She's starting on a bust again.
- 31:25Speaker 5: All these fool one-man girls, their fellas walk out on them,
- 31:27Speaker 5: they gotta tear themselves apart until they hit bottom.
- 31:36Speaker 10: I used to dream that I would discover The perfect
- 31:41Speaker 10: lover someday I knew I'd recognize him If ever he
- 31:50Speaker 10: came out my way I always used to fancy then He'd.
- 32:00Speaker 23: Be one of the godlike kind of men With a
- 32:07Speaker 23: giant brain and a noble head Like the heroes both.
- 32:16Speaker 10: In the books I've read.
- 32:22Speaker 13: But a love came through Who's not the type at
- 32:30Speaker 13: all You'd meet him on the street and never noticed him.
- 32:38Speaker 23: His form and face, his manly.
- 32:44Speaker 25: Grace is not the kind that you would find in
- 32:53Speaker 25: a statue. I, I can't explain.
- 33:01Speaker 17: It's surely not his brain that makes me real.
- 33:12Speaker 23: I love him because he's, I don't know.
- 33:24Speaker 17: Because he's just my dear.
- 33:36Speaker 6: Anything else, Simon Legree?
- 33:38Speaker 3: Would you try on your costume for the finale?
- 33:40Speaker 22: Yes, Master.
- 33:41Speaker 2: It's in your dressing room.
- 33:42Speaker 6: Yes, Master.
- 33:43Speaker 4: Right away, Master.
- 33:44Speaker 3: Sorry to bother you, Mr.
- 33:45Speaker 4: Green.
- 33:45Speaker 3: Well, that song and dance team, Frank and Ellie Schultz,
- 33:48Speaker 3: they're waiting in your office. Tell them I'll be right
- 33:50Speaker 3: up there.
- 33:53Speaker 4: That's right, Mr.
- 33:54Speaker 3: Green. Schultz and Schultz.
- 33:56Speaker 2: Say, have we got some great new routines for you.
- 33:58Speaker 6: And if you have a minute, Mr. Green, we brought
- 34:00Speaker 6: someone along with us.
- 34:01Speaker 4: Yeah? How do you do?
- 34:02Speaker 2: She sings, Mr. Green, just like a nightingale.
- 34:05Speaker 3: I already got a singer.
- 34:06Speaker 24: Besides, I.
- 34:08Speaker 8: Well, go on.
- 34:09Speaker 6: Let's hear what you can do.
- 34:11Speaker 4: I'll play for you, Noli.
- 34:12Speaker 6: Are you ready, honey?
- 34:13Speaker 4: Thanks, Sally.
- 34:17Speaker 7: Fish got to swim. Fish got to fly. I've got
- 34:30Speaker 7: to love.
- 34:31Speaker 4: My man till I die.
- 34:34Speaker 23: Can't help loving my man long.
- 34:43Speaker 3: With that costume, Julie, Jake's gonna be pretty short.
- 34:45Speaker 21: Well, who's that singing?
- 34:47Speaker 2: Oh, some gal the dance act drags in. Needs a
- 34:49Speaker 2: job there, I guess.
- 34:50Speaker 4: Needs a job?
- 34:51Speaker 6: Why?
- 34:52Speaker 3: Schultz was telling me she was married to some two-bit gambler,
- 34:55Speaker 3: and he walked off and left her flat.
- 34:57Speaker 8: Us boys are all no good, you know that.
- 34:59Speaker 2: Shut up.
- 35:00Speaker 21: Come on, now. Snap out of.
- 35:06Speaker 4: It, will you?
- 35:07Speaker 5: Why?
- 35:07Speaker 13: Oh, Snowy.
- 35:09Speaker 10: Oh, Snowy.
- 35:17Speaker 17: Well, how about it, Mr.
- 35:24Speaker 7: Green?
- 35:25Speaker 4: Not bad.
- 35:48Speaker 3: Leave word where we can reach you, honey.
- 35:49Speaker 2: Something may turn up later, see?
- 35:51Speaker 4: Well, thank you very much.
- 35:52Speaker 22: I'll be at the.
- 35:53Speaker 2: Oh, but these dance routines, suppose we.
- 35:55Speaker 6: Hey, boss.
- 35:55Speaker 8: Boss, you got a minute?
- 35:57Speaker 3: Back in a minute, Chills.
- 35:58Speaker 2: Yeah, sure. Now, don't go anywhere. We'll find something for you. Well, Julie,
- 36:03Speaker 2: she just walked out.
- 36:04Speaker 8: She what?
- 36:04Speaker 4: She's gone.
- 36:05Speaker 2: Just laughed in my face and quit.
- 36:06Speaker 4: Well, what about my opening?
- 36:08Speaker 2: She said if you don't hire the little girl who
- 36:09Speaker 2: just sang, you're crazy because she's good.
- 36:11Speaker 3: Boy, that tramp.
- 36:12Speaker 2: I'll go after her.
- 36:13Speaker 3: No, let her go.
- 36:14Speaker 2: I'm through trying to.
- 36:16Speaker 6: Hey, you.
- 36:17Speaker 4: Yes, Mr. Green?
- 36:19Speaker 3: I've just been thinking it over. Let's hear that number again.
- 36:22Speaker 7: We pause now for station identification.
- 36:45Speaker 5: The curtain rises on Act Three of Showboat. Winner of
- 36:49Speaker 5: Photoplay Magazine's Gold Medal Award, starring Catherine Grayson as Magnolia,
- 36:54Speaker 5: Ava Gardner as Julie, Howard Keel as Gaylord Ravenel, Mods
- 36:58Speaker 5: Champion as Ellie, Gower Champion as Frank, William Warfield as Joe,
- 37:02Speaker 5: and J.C.
- 37:03Speaker 3: Flippen as Captain Andy. That New Year's, I made one
- 37:11Speaker 3: of the great decisions of my life.
- 37:13Speaker 2: I told Parthenia.
- 37:14Speaker 3: Whether she liked it or not, I was going to
- 37:16Speaker 3: go to Chicago.
- 37:18Speaker 2: I was going to see Noly and Gay.
- 37:19Speaker 3: And what's more, I was going to the Trocadero and
- 37:21Speaker 3: watch Ellie and Frank knock them dead. And that's exactly
- 37:25Speaker 3: what I did.
- 37:27Speaker 2: Everything all right, sir?
- 37:28Speaker 3: More champagne, perhaps?
- 37:30Speaker 2: We do it!
- 37:31Speaker 6: Thank you, sir.
- 37:36Speaker 3: Say, where in the world do these beautiful ladies come from?
- 37:41Speaker 3: The chorus, sir. You invited them to sit down.
- 37:45Speaker 7: Happy New Year!
- 37:45Speaker 6: You were telling us about your daughter, Pop.
- 37:47Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 37:48Speaker 4: Say, she must have plenty of money to be staying
- 37:50Speaker 4: at the Sherman House.
- 37:51Speaker 3: Well, as a matter of fact, they got a place
- 37:54Speaker 3: of their own now.
- 37:54Speaker 17: Really?
- 37:55Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 37:56Speaker 3: Noly never told me much about it.
- 37:58Speaker 8: Figured she'd want.
- 37:59Speaker 3: To surprise me. But I'm going to surprise Noly. Because
- 38:03Speaker 3: Ellie and Frank, they'll know where she is, see?
- 38:08Speaker 8: He knew it!
- 38:11Speaker 14: And now the new sensation of the song and dance duo,
- 38:16Speaker 14: Choke and Choke!
- 38:19Speaker 13: Noly can tell you, that's Ellie and Frank.
- 38:21Speaker 2: Oh, way do you catch them.
- 38:23Speaker 4: Taught them everything I know myself.
- 38:24Speaker 3: Whoop!
- 38:26Speaker 11: Me.
- 38:28Speaker 20: Life upon the wicked stage ain't ever what the girl poses.
- 38:33Speaker 20: Stage door johnnies are enraging over you with gems and roses.
- 38:39Speaker 4: When you let a fella hold your hand, which.
- 38:42Speaker 26: Means an extra beer or a sandwich.
- 38:46Speaker 6: Everybody whispers ain't her life.
- 38:49Speaker 20: I'll So you're warned against a runaway ruining your reputation
- 38:57Speaker 20: When you've played around the one-night trade around this great
- 39:01Speaker 20: big nation Wild.
- 39:03Speaker 26: Old men who give you jewels and fables Only live
- 39:09Speaker 26: in Esau's stable.
- 39:11Speaker 4: A life upon the wicked day, Jane, nothing for a girl. Oh,
- 39:14Speaker 4: I've listened to you moan and grieve.
- 39:16Speaker 18: You must pardon me if I do not believe you.
- 39:19Speaker 5: There is no doubt you're crazy about your awful state.
- 39:25Speaker 20: I admit it's fun to smear my face with paint,
- 39:28Speaker 20: causing everyone to think I'm what I ain't.
- 39:33Speaker 26: And I like to play a Demi-Monday role with soul.
- 39:40Speaker 20: Ask the hero does he like the way I lure
- 39:43Speaker 20: When I play.
- 39:44Speaker 26: A hussy or a paramour But when once the curtain's
- 39:49Speaker 26: down My life is pure And how I dread it
- 39:56Speaker 26: I've got talent But it ain't been tested.
- 40:11Speaker 20: No one's even interested. A life upon the wicked stage
- 40:18Speaker 20: ain't nothing for a girl.
- 40:21Speaker 24: Excuse me, girls.
- 40:25Speaker 3: I gotta go back and say hello to Ellie and Frank.
- 40:28Speaker 6: Now, wait right here.
- 40:29Speaker 2: Don't nobody go away.
- 40:32Speaker 14: And now, ladies and gentlemen, for the unannounced treat of
- 40:36Speaker 14: the evening, that sweetheart of the Mississippi, Miss Magnolia Ravenel.
- 40:42Speaker 16: Molly.
- 40:46Speaker 13: My Molly.
- 40:48Speaker 6: The ball is over.
- 40:55Speaker 14: It's not much of a dressing room, Papa, but.
- 40:58Speaker 7: At least we can sit down.
- 41:02Speaker 17: All right.
- 41:25Speaker 4: I know they didn't like me.
- 41:27Speaker 8: Noly?
- 41:27Speaker 2: What about Gay?
- 41:31Speaker 21: I told you everything, Papa.
- 41:32Speaker 2: He hasn't even written to you?
- 41:35Speaker 21: No.
- 41:37Speaker 4: Just like he said it. London.
- 41:40Speaker 2: Just forget him, Noly, darling. He's a scoundrel and no good.
- 41:43Speaker 4: Oh, no, Papa, no. He was only trying to think
- 41:46Speaker 4: of me.
- 41:47Speaker 3: Well, from now on, you can just be thinking of yourself.
- 41:50Speaker 4: No, I can't do that either, Papa. I'm going to
- 41:54Speaker 4: have a baby... No, Lee.
- 41:57Speaker 2: And you say Gay was thinking of you.
- 41:59Speaker 21: Papa, Gay didn't know.
- 42:01Speaker 12: You see, well, he was so worried and let down
- 42:05Speaker 12: that I was waiting.
- 42:07Speaker 4: For things to get better before I told him.
- 42:10Speaker 2: Oh, honey.
- 42:11Speaker 7: Papa.
- 42:15Speaker 6: Papa, I want to come home.
- 42:18Speaker 4: If you'll have me.
- 42:20Speaker 2: If we'll have you?
- 42:23Speaker 8: Oh, no, Lee. Noly.
- 42:32Speaker 3: Noly's baby was born late that spring. We named her Kim.
- 42:37Speaker 3: Hard to say who spoiled her the most. Noly, or me,
- 42:41Speaker 3: or Parthy. The years went by. Two, three, four.
- 42:50Speaker 2: And all this.
- 42:51Speaker 3: Time, Noli thought Ravenel was still out west. Truth was,
- 42:55Speaker 3: he was playing the gambling boats right here on the Mississippi.
- 42:59Speaker 3: And one night, Ravenel met a woman.
- 43:03Speaker 2: I'm not trying to bother you, miss, but the bartender
- 43:06Speaker 2: told me you were the girl who was singing before.
- 43:08Speaker 6: Yeah, that's right. I worked the boats, too.
- 43:10Speaker 24: Why?
- 43:11Speaker 2: Well, that song you sang. Fish gotta swim, bird gotta fly.
- 43:14Speaker 26: Huh?
- 43:15Speaker 2: Someone else used to sing that song. Someone who mattered
- 43:18Speaker 2: very much. And I was hoping maybe you'd sing it again.
- 43:21Speaker 21: Oh, I don't know.
- 43:22Speaker 6: Maybe I will.
- 43:23Speaker 17: Later on.
- 43:24Speaker 2: Oh, thanks.
- 43:25Speaker 4: Hey, you.
- 43:26Speaker 6: Barkeep.
- 43:26Speaker 21: Yeah, Julie?
- 43:28Speaker 6: Hey, who's that fella?
- 43:29Speaker 4: Him?
- 43:30Speaker 2: Ooh, fair-sized gambler. Travels with his nan then. Name her Ravenel. Ravenel.
- 43:37Speaker 21: So that's the no good.
- 43:41Speaker 10: Hey, Max.
- 43:42Speaker 21: Give me a neat rye.
- 43:43Speaker 13: I gotta get my curry chicken.
- 43:52Speaker 4: Nice place, Natchez.
- 43:54Speaker 6: You getting off there?
- 43:55Speaker 10: Oh, hello.
- 43:55Speaker 2: Hello, I'm going all the way to New Orleans.
- 44:00Speaker 4: Oh, maybe Natchez. Seeing as there's a showboat tied up there.
- 44:04Speaker 3: Oh?
- 44:04Speaker 6: You know, I used to know a lot of showboat people.
- 44:08Speaker 4: One in particular.
- 44:11Speaker 21: He was so pretty and slick.
- 44:13Speaker 13: So open-hearted, just as sweet.
- 44:16Speaker 2: What are you talking about?
- 44:18Speaker 21: And you know something, mister?
- 44:20Speaker 12: Some big, soft-talking card player came along and took her
- 44:23Speaker 12: right off the cotton blossom, right off where she belonged.
- 44:26Speaker 6: And then left her broken, alone in Chicago when she.
- 44:28Speaker 3: Was going to have a baby, when there was nobody
- 44:29Speaker 3: around to take care of her.
- 44:32Speaker 21: Who are you? Ah, you could find that out easy enough.
- 44:35Speaker 6: Julie.
- 44:36Speaker 21: Julie Laverne.
- 44:38Speaker 3: Julie?
- 44:38Speaker 2: So you're... Look, what that you said.
- 44:43Speaker 4: You want to see what you left, mister.
- 44:46Speaker 13: Here's a newspaper clipping.
- 44:47Speaker 6: Pictures, too, see?
- 44:49Speaker 4: This week in Natchez. Captain Andy Hawk's daughter and granddaughter.
- 44:55Speaker 2: Give me that. Kim. Kim Raven. Julia, I never knew.
- 45:04Speaker 2: I never knew.
- 45:05Speaker 21: I'll bet you never knew.
- 45:06Speaker 2: I take my oath. I never knew.
- 45:08Speaker 6: You mean you.
- 45:12Speaker 6: Look, I got to go now.
- 45:13Speaker 13: I hope I did right.
- 45:16Speaker 4: I know there's always two sides to everything. Anyway, mister,
- 45:20Speaker 4: if you ever do get to see Noli, not.
- 45:23Speaker 21: Get together with her, I mean, but if you ever
- 45:24Speaker 21: do get to.
- 45:25Speaker 4: Talk to her, don't ever tell her you saw me.
- 45:29Speaker 13: I mean, don't ever.
- 45:31Speaker 4: Tell her you saw me like this.
- 45:33Speaker 2: I won't, Judy.
- 45:35Speaker 4: Good luck, mister.
- 45:36Speaker 23: All right.
- 45:40Speaker 3: The cotton blossom, mister? Why, that's the cotton blossom just alongside.
- 45:46Speaker 2: The wharf there. Thank you.
- 45:49Speaker 4: Mr. Gay, it's Mr. Gay.
- 45:51Speaker 8: Joe.
- 45:51Speaker 21: Oh, Lord.
- 45:52Speaker 4: Oh, Lord.
- 45:53Speaker 2: Look, look, Joe, you haven't seen me, you understand? Yes, sir. Joe,
- 45:57Speaker 2: my little girl. Kim, where is she? That's Kim on
- 46:02Speaker 2: the dock, Mr.
- 46:02Speaker 8: Gay.
- 46:03Speaker 2: Over there, playing with her doll. Oh, my God. So
- 46:11Speaker 2: you're Kim.
- 46:12Speaker 4: Hello, mister. Do I know you?
- 46:15Speaker 2: No. No, you don't know me. But could you tell
- 46:20Speaker 2: me something? Is your mommy here?
- 46:24Speaker 6: Of course.
- 46:25Speaker 4: She's on the boat.
- 46:27Speaker 2: And your daddy?
- 46:30Speaker 4: This is my daddy. This dog. This one's gnarly and
- 46:33Speaker 4: this one is gay. Of course he isn't my real daddy.
- 46:36Speaker 4: He's far away someplace. So I just play make-believe this
- 46:40Speaker 4: is my daddy.
- 46:42Speaker 2: Make-believe. Could you make-believe that I was your dad?
- 46:49Speaker 4: Do you know how to play make-believe?
- 46:51Speaker 2: Oh, sure.
- 46:52Speaker 23: All right.
- 46:53Speaker 6: You start.
- 46:54Speaker 2: Well, let's see. First of all, I'd I'd put you
- 47:00Speaker 2: up on my knee like this. And then I'd... I'd
- 47:05Speaker 2: put my arms around you. And I'd say... Only make believe.
- 47:15Speaker 19: I love you.
- 47:18Speaker 8: Darling, look.
- 47:20Speaker 3: If your daddy really did come back, could you make
- 47:22Speaker 3: believe that he'd never been away?
- 47:24Speaker 2: Could you, sweetheart?
- 47:26Speaker 4: Of course I could.
- 47:27Speaker 10: Kim!
- 47:27Speaker 2: Kim, Kim.
- 47:29Speaker 4: We have a play next to me, Mommy. Kim, it's
- 47:32Speaker 4: time for lunch, dear. Grandma's looking for you. You play
- 47:38Speaker 4: the real wonderful, Mommy.
- 47:39Speaker 2: Hello, Noli.
- 47:43Speaker 4: Hello, Kay.
- 47:45Speaker 2: She's, uh, she's lovely, Noli.
- 47:49Speaker 17: Yes, yes, she is, isn't she?
- 47:51Speaker 2: You, uh, you look fine, too.
- 47:53Speaker 4: Thank you.
- 47:59Speaker 2: I just happened to see the picture, and I... Well, I.
- 48:04Speaker 4: Picture?
- 48:05Speaker 2: Well, the one in the newspapers, and I.
- 48:10Speaker 2: Oh, no, there's so much that I want to say
- 48:13Speaker 2: to you.
- 48:14Speaker 4: So much.
- 48:14Speaker 10: Oh, Kate.
- 48:15Speaker 4: Kate, darling, my darling.
- 48:21Speaker 8: Kim.
- 48:22Speaker 2: Kim, he's back. Your daddy's back.
- 48:25Speaker 3: It's Saturday night again.
- 48:27Speaker 2: It's Saturday night forever.
- 48:31Speaker 15: You and me, we sweat and strain. Body all aching
- 48:37Speaker 15: and wracked with pain. Hope that fortune lifts that veil.
- 48:43Speaker 7: You get a little drunk.
- 48:47Speaker 11: And you land in jail.
- 48:56Speaker 8: I get weary and sick of trying.
- 49:04Speaker 6: I'm tired of living.
- 49:37Speaker 2: Now, here's Mr.
- 49:37Speaker 3: Keeley with our star.
- 49:38Speaker 5: And I'd just like to add my thanks for an
- 49:40Speaker 5: enchanting evening to Catherine Grayson, Ava Gardner, Howard Keel, Marge
- 49:45Speaker 5: and Gower Champion.
- 49:46Speaker 2: William Warfield, and J.C.

- 50:22Speaker 3: our congratulations to the cast.
- 50:24Speaker 2: They were superb.
- 50:25Speaker 5: You know, as I predicted last year, you've gone ahead
- 50:28Speaker 5: and developed some brand new stars out at MGM.
- 50:31Speaker 3: Yes, Bill, and believe me, it's a real thrill to
- 50:34Speaker 3: direct young players like Marge and Gower Champion and Showboat
- 50:37Speaker 3: and have them jump to stardom in their very next picture.
- 50:40Speaker 2: Everything I have is yours. Say, what is your play
- 50:43Speaker 2: for next week?
- 50:43Speaker 5: It's one of MGM's outstanding successes of past seasons, Rudyard

- 50:52Speaker 5: roles will be Errol Flynn and Dean Stockwell.
- 50:57Speaker 3: Well, it was a fine motion picture and should make
- 50:59Speaker 3: a great radio show.
- 51:01Speaker 2: Good night, Bill.
- 51:01Speaker 8: Good night.
- 51:02Speaker 5: Good night. And thank you, George Sidney and Arthur Flees
