- 0:01Hi, I'm Becky Oxton, and you're listening to Coffee In The Park with Jennifer and Cam.
- 0:27Well, good morning, everybody, and welcome to another edition of Coffee In The Park with Jennifer and Cam, and we are coming to you today.
- 0:36I should have done my tongue-twisting exercises.
- 0:39Yeah, I know, your little rhymes there.
- 0:40But once again, I'm too lazy to edit, so we're not stopping and starting over.
- 0:44But we are coming to you live from the Wall Coffee Roasters in the heart of beautiful downtown Acheson.
- 0:51That's right, so if you hear some noises in the background, some coffee machines whirring, people talking, kids screaming, there are some children.
- 0:58Are there children in there today?
- 1:00There's one children right there.
- 1:01One children? I like that.
- 1:01And there's other children's, potentially.
- 1:04And so if you hear them screaming in the background, that's because we're at the coffee shop.
- 1:07Because this is where we love to do the podcast from, in the back corner of the Wall Coffee Roaster.
- 1:12It really is, and you know, people have said, I'm just gonna, I just want to say this, because people have said, why don't you guys like go into a studio and be all professional, nah, nah, nah.
- 1:20No, we like the organic feel of the coffee shop.
- 1:23And who are they kidding, professional?
- 1:25You and I.
- 1:26Can you imagine us in a studio? No! Hello, welcome to the Coffee In The Park podcast today with Jennifer and Cam.
- 1:34That would never happen.
- 1:35So, no, so we're here, and we're doing this, and this is really great.
- 1:39And we want to let everybody know that we are coming to you because of some very important people at Wing Snob Canada.
- 1:47That's right, where the wings are fresh, never frozen, with 16 different flavors, four different rubs.
- 1:53Hey, I have a question.
- 1:54Yes.
- 1:55The last Oilers game, did you order Wing Snob?
- 1:58No, I know.
- 1:59I said I was going to.
- 2:00Sorry, Mike, I didn't.
- 2:02No.
- 2:02What did I eat?
- 2:04Oh, Kraft Dinner.
- 2:04But it's not because the wings are bad.
- 2:06No, it had nothing to do with the wings.
- 2:08It had everything to do with that I was just too lazy.
- 2:10That's fair.
- 2:11And I just wanted Kraft Dinner.
- 2:13I get that.
- 2:14I like Kraft Dinner.
- 2:15Do you like Kraft Dinner?
- 2:15I love Kraft Dinner.
- 2:16You know, I told you this.
- 2:17I'm going to let the secret out of the bag about Kraft Dinner.
- 2:20Here's the deal.
- 2:21If you go to the Bulk Barn, have you ever been to Bulk Barn?
- 2:24Yes.
- 2:25Bulk Barn is where they sell everything in bulk, hence Bulk Barn.
- 2:28And they sell like lots of raisins and nuts and spices and everything.
- 2:33If you go down one aisle, tucked in one aisle, they have a full bin of, you know, the cheese in the package that comes with the Kraft Dinner?
- 2:41The Kraft Cheese, yeah.
- 2:42They have bulk Kraft Cheese.
- 2:44And you buy, you put it in a bag and you take it to the lady and she weighs it.
- 2:48She goes, that'll be $4.95.
- 2:49And you take it home and you add extra Kraft Cheese.
- 2:52Unbelievable.
- 2:54So you add a full package.
- 2:56Plus extra.
- 2:57Plus extra.
- 2:57Plus more butter, plus more milk.
- 3:00And I'm telling you right now, anyway, we digress.
- 3:05Back to Wing Snob.
- 3:06Wing Snob.
- 3:07Best wings you've ever had.
- 3:09Best wings you are ever gonna have.
- 3:11I'm telling you right now, Mike makes, well, he doesn't personally make them.
- 3:15His staff does.
- 3:16The people who own the Wing Snob's do.
- 3:18And they're incredible.
- 3:19Like Jennifer said, 16 flavors, four rubs, cornbread, parm fries, they got it all.
- 3:24They do.
- 3:25So if you are hungry, you should definitely check out a Wing Snob.
- 3:29I think you should.
- 3:2910 locations, eight in Edmonton, one in Grande Prairie, one in Calgary.
- 3:34And all you gotta do is go to www.wingsnob.ca.
- 3:38And I think you can get them on the Skip The Dishes, people.
- 3:40You can.
- 3:41Skip The Dishes.
- 3:42You don't even have to leave your house.
- 3:43Nope, just Skip The Dish, or is, or whatever that is.
- 3:47We won't get into that.
- 3:48No, we're not gonna.
- 3:48That's a whole other.
- 3:49No, that's a whole other Skip The Dishes.
- 3:50Anyway, I'm very excited about today's podcast.
- 3:53I'm super excited about it because I'm super excited about our guest.
- 3:57So Jennifer, let's get started.
- 3:59Let's get into it.
- 3:59Okay.
- 4:00I am also super excited about this guest today.
- 4:03And Cam, this guest is going to be on the panel at my upcoming Women in Leadership event next week.
- 4:11That's upcoming.
- 4:12Next week.
- 4:14Next Thursday.
- 4:14That's right, because we'll drop this on Thursday.
- 4:16So it's upcoming.
- 4:17Next Thursday, yeah.
- 4:18I got to remember that.
- 4:19Well, yeah.
- 4:19I know I'm not invited.
- 4:21No.
- 4:21But I come set up your sound system for you.
- 4:23And then I get kicked out.
- 4:24And it gets out.
- 4:24I tell you, let's just talk about that for a second.
- 4:26This is unfair because the food looks so good.
- 4:29And I just have to walk by and I'm like, don't touch it.
- 4:32Don't touch the charcuterie.
- 4:33Listen, I'll make you a doggy bag.
- 4:36A doggy bag.
- 4:37Inside joke, I'll bring you Tupperware.
- 4:39Yeah.
- 4:41Anyways, back to our guest because she's a guest at your Women In Leadership.
- 4:47She is.
- 4:47Is that sold out by the way?
- 4:49Yes, it is.
- 4:50Totally sold out.
- 4:51Totally sold out.
- 4:51Totally sold out.
- 4:53I'm sorry, women, if you're listening and you want to come, I'm sorry.
- 4:57You snooze, you lose.
- 4:58Next year.
- 4:59Next year.
- 5:01Anyway.
- 5:03Okay.
- 5:03Are we ready now?
- 5:04Okay.
- 5:04We're ready.
- 5:05Our guest today is Becky Oxton, who is the owner of Sunrise Estate Services.
- 5:13Yay.
- 5:14Welcome, Becky.
- 5:15Good to have you.
- 5:16Thanks for having me.
- 5:17Yeah, it's good.
- 5:17How fun is this?
- 5:18Yeah.
- 5:18Well, and we know you're Sunrise because you're wearing Sunrise on your hoodie.
- 5:21That's kind of cool.
- 5:22It's a bright orange hoodie.
- 5:23It's a bright hoo- I like that.
- 5:24It's her merch.
- 5:24We'll get into her merch a little bit later, but yes.
- 5:27We'll give you all the info where to buy the merch.
- 5:29I know.
- 5:29If they sell the merch, I don't know if they will be able to. Oh we sell it.
- 5:32We'll get into that later.
- 5:33We'll get into that later.
- 5:34Okay.
- 5:34Okay.
- 5:35We have to start off.
- 5:37Becky, tell us about young Becky.
- 5:39Oh, young Becky.
- 5:41Well, she's young now.
- 5:42No, but growing up, Becky.
- 5:44Younger Becky.
- 5:45Younger Becky, yes.
- 5:46Younger Becky growing up, like jazz dance?
- 5:50Oh, well, if you did- Where were you born?
- 5:52I was born in Edmonton.
- 5:54Here in the city?
- 5:55In the city, but only because they airlifted my mom from Lloydminster.
- 6:00Really?
- 6:00Yeah.
- 6:01So grew up, my dad was oil and gas.
- 6:04Yeah.
- 6:05So I lived anywhere there was a Husky.
- 6:08Yeah.
- 6:09Including Rainbow Lake, Alberta.
- 6:11Rainbow Lake?
- 6:12Rainbow Lake.
- 6:13I think I've been to Rainbow- I don't know.
- 6:16You've never been to Rainbow Lake.
- 6:17Tell, where is- Where is Rainbow Lake?
- 6:19North, North, North, right?
- 6:20North, North, North.
- 6:21Yeah.
- 6:21So it is northwest of High Level.
- 6:23Oh, yeah.
- 6:24Oh, yeah.
- 6:24I was born in Grande Prairie.
- 6:26That's, yeah, maybe.
- 6:28I might have gone further up.
- 6:29You might have gone further up.
- 6:30I left there when I was two. You absolutely did not.
- 6:31So there's a good chance they threw me in the car and threw me up to Rainbow Lake, and then I didn't even know.
- 6:35But anyway, okay.
- 6:36Rainbow Lake.
- 6:36Rainbow Lake.
- 6:37Yeah.
- 6:37Yeah.
- 6:38And then- I very much loved it.
- 6:40I will always claim to be a small town girl.
- 6:43Yeah.
- 6:43You know, living in a lonely world.
- 6:45It's a thing.
- 6:47But yeah, moving- I really want to sing that now.
- 6:49I know. Now it's in your head.
- 6:50I know.
- 6:50Anyways, yeah.
- 6:53From there, like Rocky Mountain House.
- 6:55Oh, come on.
- 6:56We moved a lot for my dad's work.
- 7:00Ended up ultimately living the longest in, just outside of St.
- 7:04Albert, actually right by Villeneuve.
- 7:06Okay.
- 7:06Okay.
- 7:07Yeah, Villeneuve.
- 7:07So did the school triangle in St.
- 7:11Albert.
- 7:11It was Sam for the elementary school, Lauren Aikens, Paul Kane.
- 7:15Yeah.
- 7:16Paul Kane.
- 7:16Yeah.
- 7:17Yeah.
- 7:17Yeah.
- 7:17And then, yeah, right after high school, moved to Manning, Alberta.
- 7:23Manning.
- 7:23So continued following my dad around.
- 7:26I have been to Manning, yeah.
- 7:27Best Chinese food, by the way.
- 7:28Singhs, shout out to Singhs in Manning, if you ever want.
- 7:32No, because every small town Alberta has a Chinese restaurant.
- 7:37But the thing is, I've lived in these small towns.
- 7:38Right.
- 7:39But they were the best.
- 7:40And Manning is the best.
- 7:40Yeah, but where I was going was, every small town has a Chinese restaurant.
- 7:44Right.
- 7:45So now Manning is the best.
- 7:46Manning is the best.
- 7:47In my humble opinion.
- 7:48Is it still there?
- 7:49It is still there.
- 7:50Is Mr.
- 7:50Singh still running it?
- 7:52They sold.
- 7:52They sold?
- 7:53They did.
- 7:54Do you know the new owners?
- 7:55I don't know the new owners.
- 7:55Because we could shout out them.
- 7:56But I heard they got new carpet, which is.
- 7:59Yeah, that's a good thing, actually.
- 8:01That's a good thing, right?
- 8:02No, seriously.
- 8:02In a buffet.
- 8:04Because if the buffet carpet has been there for a long time, you can see where the sweet and sour and the chow mein and the.
- 8:13Yeah, it's inbed.
- 8:14Anyways, okay, so Manning.
- 8:16So Manning.
- 8:17Yeah.
- 8:17And then, yeah, kind of carried on my nomad ways that my parents taught me.
- 8:22Came back to Edmonton.
- 8:24I went to Grant MacEwan for police studies.
- 8:27Police studies? of all places, police studies.
- 8:28Okay, and why?
- 8:30Why did you decide to go into police studies?
- 8:32Well, I was going to be a police officer, don't you know?
- 8:35I had big plans, Jennifer.
- 8:38She wasn't going into sanitation, okay?
- 8:40She was going into police work.
- 8:42But why?
- 8:42Like what?
- 8:43Yeah, why did you want to be a police person?
- 8:45Was there something that drew you to it?
- 8:46Like in high school?
- 8:47Did you know somebody?
- 8:48Yeah, so I grew up.
- 8:50Were you arrested when you were young age and you thought this is it?
- 8:53These cuffs feel real good.
- 8:54I want to put them on somebody else.
- 8:55I'm sure I asked you not to bring that up.
- 8:57Yeah.
- 8:58Sorry, Becky, sorry.
- 8:59We're not just, once again, we are not editing.
- 9:01I'm just saying.
- 9:02Okay, so.
- 9:03It's out there now.
- 9:04That's right.
- 9:05I was let go.
- 9:07No.
- 9:07I grew up and my mom actually was a special constable.
- 9:13So for years and years.
- 9:14My mom worked for the Lloydminster Police Service.
- 9:17Okay.
- 9:17As a special constable.
- 9:19Okay.
- 9:19Then with moving around for my dad's oil and gas work, she worked numerous places.
- 9:25But then when we came back to St.
- 9:27Albert, she actually got back into law enforcement and worked as a special constable.
- 9:32Right.
- 9:33So growing up, I always saw my mom in uniform.
- 9:37Cool.
- 9:38Always got to see that side of the world, and so from the get-go, Becky was going to be a police officer.
- 9:49Okay.
- 9:50Then as often happens, Becky did not become a police officer.
- 9:54But you went to Grant MacEwan.
- 9:55But I went to Grant MacEwan.
- 9:56And you took Police 101 or whatever?
- 9:58I took the Police Studies.
- 9:59Yes.
- 9:59Yeah.
- 10:00So I took their two-year program.
- 10:01Graduated and?
- 10:02Graduated and became a special constable, just like my mom.
- 10:07Okay.
- 10:07Yeah.
- 10:08Well, you better tell everybody what a special constable is.
- 10:12Sure.
- 10:12Because why are they special and the other constables aren't?
- 10:16Because I edited myself right there.
- 10:21My filter just came.
- 10:23Feel free.
- 10:25My filter came slamming down.
- 10:26No, no.
- 10:27Feel free.
- 10:27Feel free.
- 10:28So currently right now, there are, everybody knows police officers, Edmonton Police, RCMP, right?
- 10:34But then there's peace officers.
- 10:36Peace officers.
- 10:37So peace officers, there's sheriffs.
- 10:38Sheriffs.
- 10:39Those are Alberta peace officers.
- 10:42But then there's community peace officers who work for like Parkland County, Town of Stony Plain.
- 10:48So municipalities have community peace officers.
- 10:51We do?
- 10:52Yes, we do.
- 10:53Have you ever seen one?
- 10:54Of course.
- 10:55You know some of them.
- 10:56I know some of them.
- 10:57You will see them all the time.
- 10:58They weigh trucks in Parkland County.
- 11:00They do.
- 11:01They're in Acheson all the time.
- 11:02Is that the lady?
- 11:03Is that the one who stopped me?
- 11:05Yes.
- 11:06That was her?
- 11:06That would be a peace officer.
- 11:09I don't think I did.
- 11:10But anyway, that's another story.
- 11:12We could go.
- 11:12That's a whole other podcast.
- 11:15I said to Jennifer, we could talk about this, but we best not.
- 11:18But we best not.
- 11:18We best not.
- 11:19Anyway.
- 11:19Okay.
- 11:20So that's a special constable.
- 11:22So that's a community peace officer.
- 11:24Years and years ago, they used to be called special constables.
- 11:27Then the government changed the names and it was that sort of thing.
- 11:31So same premise just different municipalities.
- 11:33Here's my question.
- 11:34What's the difference between a sheriff and a peace officer?
- 11:37So a sheriff works for the province as an Alberta peace officer.
- 11:42A community peace officer will work for the municipality or a hospital.
- 11:49Okay.
- 11:49That's good.
- 11:49Thank you for clearing that up because I didn't know what they did.
- 11:52Yeah.
- 11:53They all do law enforcement and they all deserve our utmost respect.
- 11:56So you were a special constable.
- 11:58I was a special constable and then I was there through the program change and became a community peace officer.
- 12:05Okay.
- 12:06For which community?
- 12:07I worked in Slave Lake.
- 12:09And then I worked in the town of Stony Plain.
- 12:13Slave Lake.
- 12:16Don't send us mail.
- 12:18We're going to have to talk after this, Cam.
- 12:20You and I.
- 12:21Once the mics are off.
- 12:22We love Slave Lake.
- 12:24We do.
- 12:25We really do.
- 12:27Okay.
- 12:27No, we do.
- 12:28No, we do.
- 12:29But I...
- 12:29Okay.
- 12:30So, young Becky.
- 12:32Young Becky in my jazz leotard.
- 12:33Yeah.
- 12:34You in your jazz leotard.
- 12:35I really glossed over that.
- 12:40How old was the jazz leotard?
- 12:42Like, how old were you?
- 12:43When you went to Slave Lake.
- 12:44I was at Slave Lake when I was 21.
- 12:46No, I was 5.
- 12:47She was on the Special Constable Police Dance Force.
- 12:51Sorry, just kidding. We did ballet and jazz.
- 12:52I'm totally kidding.
- 12:53Anyway, yeah.
- 12:54Yeah, so how old were...
- 12:56What is the police...
- 12:58Where are we?
- 12:59Oh, yeah, the dance thing.
- 13:02How old were you when...
- 13:04I was 5.
- 13:05It was a very short stint.
- 13:06But there's a photo in my scrapbook that always pops up on me.
- 13:11So I was 5 years old.
- 13:125 years old?
- 13:13Yeah.
- 13:13For the people that know me, they will absolutely be floored that I had any dance skills at any time in my life.
- 13:20Maybe we could fangle, dangle and get that photo and put it up on our website just for people to know.
- 13:27Man, I was such a cute kid.
- 13:28I would totally give you that.
- 13:30Absolutely.
- 13:31I'll email you.
- 13:31Oh, we were all cute kids.
- 13:33And then what happened?
- 13:34Anyway, so that's what my family says.
- 13:37So 21.
- 13:37What happened to you?
- 13:38Slave Lake.
- 13:39What was that like?
- 13:41Terrifying and exciting.
- 13:45And I don't even know.
- 13:48Yeah.
- 13:49So at 21, it was when I moved out of my parents' house, who were living in Beaumont at the time.
- 13:56Okay.
- 13:57And so moved away, bought my first home, which was a beautiful mobile home in Slave Lake.
- 14:04Yeah.
- 14:05I grew up in Rainbow Lake.
- 14:06So for those who are listening again from Alberta, because we have listeners all over the world, Slave Lake is north of where we are here in Acheson, very north.
- 14:16Well, like two and a half hours.
- 14:17Yeah.
- 14:18Okay.
- 14:18It's not as north as I thought, but it's very north.
- 14:21Like Rainbow Lake is very north.
- 14:23Very north like 12-14 hours.
- 14:23Okay.
- 14:24Slave Lake.
- 14:25Yeah.
- 14:26So how long were you in Slave Lake?
- 14:28I was only there for a little over a year.
- 14:29Yeah.
- 14:30But it was such a cool experience.
- 14:35As a special constable there, I got to work with the RCMP closely.
- 14:38Oh yeah.
- 14:39Yeah.
- 14:39And when you're in a municipality that's northern and a little secluded.
- 14:44Yeah.
- 14:46You have to find your people.
- 14:47Right.
- 14:48And so that's what Slave Lake taught me.
- 14:50Okay.
- 14:50Is to find your people.
- 14:52Yeah.
- 14:53And so you can't be people with the people you're arresting.
- 14:57And so you end up being people with the people who help you out.
- 15:01Hey, when you're out, you want to go hang out?
- 15:03Want to go get a beer?
- 15:05Yeah.
- 15:05Exactly.
- 15:06Right.
- 15:07So it can be very lonely.
- 15:09Yes.
- 15:10And it really kind of started me on this journey of really, I guess, networking, building my team, that sort of thing.
- 15:18That's always stuck with me from, well, 20 years later.
- 15:23Yeah.
- 15:23Sure.
- 15:23So it was great.
- 15:25It was a great learning experience.
- 15:26I had to learn how to do all sorts of things from, you know, living on my own and owning a mobile home to getting a realtor to selling it to all the crazy stuff.
- 15:37That's a lot of life experiences at 21.
- 15:40That's like, you know, most that in today's day and age.
- 15:43That doesn't happen.
- 15:43No, it doesn't happen until you're like 47. Not at 21.
- 15:45So it's like, you know, like most people have no clue.
- 15:48Oh, for sure.
- 15:49And then be the one driving the car with lights on.
- 15:51Right.
- 15:52And then when something happens and they stop and look at you.
- 15:54That's right.
- 15:54And arresting people and people getting ticked off at you and all that.
- 15:58But you probably built good relationships.
- 15:59Oh, absolutely.
- 16:00Yeah.
- 16:01Yeah, for sure.
- 16:01And it's always it's interesting when you think like, why is everybody looking at me?
- 16:05Yeah.
- 16:06Right.
- 16:07I'm in uniform.
- 16:09Oh, they want me to do something.
- 16:10Stop staring at the lights.
- 16:12Why is everybody staring at me?
- 16:13I can guarantee if we put lights on our car, people would stare, but that's why.
- 16:18I mean, yeah.
- 16:20So, interesting.
- 16:21And how long were you Slave Lake?
- 16:23Just over a year.
- 16:24Just over a year.
- 16:25And then I moved to the town of Stony Plain.
- 16:27Oh, yeah.
- 16:28So, moved to Stony Plain.
- 16:29Kind of jumped around a lot.
- 16:31I was really- Still doing police work.
- 16:33Yeah.
- 16:33Still a peace officer.
- 16:34Yeah.
- 16:34I was really looking for opportunities for more education.
- 16:39Right.
- 16:39Less enforcement.
- 16:40Right.
- 16:40I wanted to be the one to contribute to make a difference.
- 16:44And Stony Plain gave me that opportunity.
- 16:47Yeah.
- 16:47So, I was able to take over from the Special Constable who had been there for a very long time.
- 16:54Right.
- 16:54I believe it was only the Special Constable at the time that the town of Stony Plain knew.
- 16:58Yeah.
- 16:58And then they got like 22, 23 year old Becky coming in ready to take on the world.
- 17:04Take on Stony Plain.
- 17:05Here we come.
- 17:05Yeah.
- 17:06Exactly.
- 17:06Yeah.
- 17:07Was Mayor Choy the mayor then?
- 17:08No.
- 17:09Because he's been the mayor forever.
- 17:10Yeah.
- 17:10Forever.
- 17:11Not that long?
- 17:12Not that long.
- 17:13I'm not that young anymore.
- 17:14No.
- 17:14Shout out to Mayor Choy.
- 17:16He's a good guy.
- 17:16I love him.
- 17:17Yeah.
- 17:17He's an awesome guy.
- 17:17Yeah.
- 17:18I agree.
- 17:18Yeah.
- 17:19Then from there, went to the town of Beaumont.
- 17:22Oh, yeah.
- 17:23Beaumont.
- 17:24Yeah.
- 17:24Beaumont was incredible.
- 17:26I had one of the best bosses I've ever had.
- 17:30Right.
- 17:30Who really gave me the reign on education, and told me to go make connections, build programs.
- 17:39I did dog bite prevention for kids.
- 17:42Dog bite prevention?
- 17:43Yeah.
- 17:43I did bike rodeos.
- 17:45Oh, the bike rodeos.
- 17:47I did that when I was a kid. You guys remember the bike rodeos?
- 17:49I did that.
- 17:50With pedal pushers.
- 17:52Oh, easy now.
- 17:52At Westmount, we did the bike rodeo.
- 17:55I think I got a badge that said bike rodeo.
- 17:57That is fantastic.
- 17:58Yeah.
- 17:58I loved the bike rodeo.
- 17:59But the one that's intriguing me here is the dog bite.
- 18:03Yeah, there's a full program.
- 18:04You do dog bite clinic?
- 18:05I did.
- 18:06I don't do it anymore, but there's a full course.
- 18:09I got it out of the States, and it was like a PowerPoint, and it had...
- 18:13Oh, it was fantastic.
- 18:14Really?
- 18:15Yeah, absolutely.
- 18:15And you taught?
- 18:17I went out to the schools.
- 18:18How to bite a dog?
- 18:19I did.
- 18:20Yes.
- 18:20How to bite a dog?
- 18:23It's a dog bite course.
- 18:24How to not get bit by a dog?
- 18:26How to not get bit by a dog.
- 18:28This is...
- 18:29Where was I?
- 18:30I needed you.
- 18:31When I was young, I got bit really bad by a dog.
- 18:33Oh, see?
- 18:34I wish I had taken that course.
- 18:36Do they still offer that course?
- 18:37I don't know who offers it, but they're certainly still available.
- 18:41I didn't know you could do a course.
- 18:43You can do all sorts of things.
- 18:44Well, I know I can't let a dog bite course.
- 18:46That one's like up there.
- 18:48That's cool.
- 18:49Yeah.
- 18:49Okay.
- 18:49We should do that in Acheson sometime.
- 18:51Well, we don't have a lot of dogs.
- 18:52But just for something to do.
- 18:54I bet it would fill up.
- 18:55I bet if you offered that, it would fill up.
- 18:57I bet you.
- 18:57We'll talk to Becky offline and see what can happen.
- 19:00Okay.
- 19:01So you're in Beaumont.
- 19:02So then from Beaumont, I ended my career in Westlock County as Manager of Enforcement Services.
- 19:10Oh, okay.
- 19:11And started a new career as a Regional Traffic Safety Consultant with Alberta Transportation Office of Traffic Safety.
- 19:19Regional Traffic Safety Consultant.
- 19:21Nailed it.
- 19:22Yeah.
- 19:23Alberta Transportation.
- 19:25Our friends.
- 19:26Yes.
- 19:27Our friends at Alberta Transportation.
- 19:29Yes.
- 19:32We're just all pausing here for a moment.
- 19:34I don't know why, but we're pausing because Alberta, we, Highway 60 overpass.
- 19:42That's all I was going to say.
- 19:44I am saying nothing. Let the record show.
- 19:45Yeah, you're saying.
- 19:46We're being very silent.
- 19:47That's right.
- 19:48Becky is saying nothing.
- 19:50Okay.
- 19:51So, what did you do at Alberta Transportation?
- 19:53Alberta Transportation person.
- 19:55With Alberta Transportation, at one point, there was a department called the Office of Traffic Safety.
- 20:01So, the whole premise behind the Office of Traffic Safety and the Regional Traffic Safety Consultants was to decrease serious injuries and fatalities on Alberta's roads.
- 20:11Right.
- 20:12So, we were given the chance to work with municipalities, stakeholders, industry partners to really empower them and have them work towards local solutions.
- 20:24Right.
- 20:24Because I'm not...
- 20:25Sometimes, the government is slow.
- 20:29Yeah.
- 20:30And municipalities and local industries and individuals could sometimes do things a lot faster.
- 20:37Right.
- 20:38And so, we built community around traffic safety.
- 20:42We worked with a ton of not-for-profits, worked a lot with MADD.
- 20:45Okay.
- 20:46Okay.
- 20:47Have you folks ever seen the crashed car?
- 20:50Yes.
- 20:50Yes.
- 20:51I've seen the crashed car.
- 20:52So, that was one of my initiatives.
- 20:53Oh.
- 20:55Tell everybody what the crashed car is, because this is really cool.
- 20:57This is really cool.
- 20:58I agree.
- 20:59So, I worked a lot with MADD, so Mothers Against Drunk Drivers, specifically in the Parkland chapter.
- 21:05And at one point, in the Office of Traffic Safety, there was an Alberta Traffic Safety Fund, where not-for-profits and community groups could apply for funding for traffic safety initiatives.
- 21:16So, in working with MADD and working with community groups, we applied for this fund.
- 21:20I assisted them, and we partnered with Tuber Towing.
- 21:24Shout out to Tuber Towing of course, they are fantastic.
- 21:26Another Edmonton area tow truck driving company.
- 21:31And they got us a car that had been in a collision, and they decalled the car for us with Don't Drive Impaired.
- 21:40And we worked with Alberta Transportation, and that car, this was probably 10 years ago now, when we first did this, and that car is still out and about.
- 21:50It should be coming out for May long weekend.
- 21:52Yes.
- 21:53And it's also, Grande Prairie MADD has it.
- 21:56Uh-huh, okay.
- 21:57And so the car went national, and we developed a how-to guide.
- 22:02Right, and you take it to schools and all kinds of...
- 22:05The car can be requested from MADD.
- 22:07Right, and I hear you take it to schools a lot before prom, right before proms.
- 22:14That's what I heard.
- 22:15Because big proms...
- 22:16Well, I'm no longer traffic safety consultant, but I know the cars are out there.
- 22:18Okay, yeah, but I was reading that they take it to high schools and stuff, because you're going into prom season, and you know what, prom season is...
- 22:26It's not just about getting a diploma.
- 22:28Anyway, it's about the prom party. Safe Grad. Safe Grad.
- 22:31So you started this, this is really cool.
- 22:33It is really cool.
- 22:34Yeah, it was really cool.
- 22:36Yeah, I was given a chance with transportation to do unbelievable things.
- 22:42It took the whole, it really tied in the enforcement piece.
- 22:45Right, right.
- 22:46Because in enforcement, I loved the education.
- 22:48Like I was a DARE officer.
- 22:50I loved going into the schools.
- 22:51I loved working with communities to try to take ownership.
- 22:54Right.
- 22:54And what can we do?
- 22:55Because we can all sit here and complain about everything.
- 22:57That's really cool.
- 22:58But if you're able to take action, then do something.
- 23:01Exactly, 100%.
- 23:03So it was really great.
- 23:04I met amazing coworkers and incredible people within the government, incredible community groups that I'm still friends with.
- 23:11Right.
- 23:12And who 100% years later still support me in my new endeavors with Sunrise Estate Services.
- 23:19That's cool.
- 23:19That's really cool.
- 23:20Yeah, it was really good.
- 23:21Wow.
- 23:22And how long you were there for?
- 23:23How long?
- 23:2313 years.
- 23:2413 years.
- 23:25Wow, that is a long time.
- 23:27It was the longest I have ever worked anywhere.
- 23:29Yeah.
- 23:31So I don't know if that says something not so good about me or.
- 23:34No, no, no.
- 23:35No, no, no, no.
- 23:36Or it just says I'm just in my place.
- 23:37No, I think it's what it says is you loved it and you just loved doing it.
- 23:41Yeah, exactly.
- 23:42Exactly.
- 23:43You found your niche for a while.
- 23:45Oh, absolutely.
- 23:45Yeah.
- 23:46100%.
- 23:46So that's kind of cool.
- 23:48Okay.
- 23:48So then after 13 years, what made you decide it's time for a change?
- 23:54Well, I didn't decide.
- 23:55Oh, okay.
- 23:56The funding for the program decided.
- 23:59The government stopped funding you.
- 24:00Yes.
- 24:01So.
- 24:01That happens.
- 24:02It does happen.
- 24:03I got nothing to say.
- 24:04I know.
- 24:05Really?
- 24:06Pregnant cause of silence.
- 24:07Yes.
- 24:08Actually, I do have lots to say, but I'm not going to say.
- 24:10Okay.
- 24:10Anyway.
- 24:11So actually, we started Sunrise Estate Services in 2015.
- 24:16When I say we, I mean, my husband and myself.
- 24:18Okay.
- 24:18So you're married now?
- 24:19I am married.
- 24:20Been married 15 years.
- 24:21Oh, okay.
- 24:22Yeah.
- 24:23So is that right?
- 24:26Wait.
- 24:27Were you married when you were the traffic safety person?
- 24:31No, I was married when I was the peace officer.
- 24:33Oh yeah.
- 24:34That'd be 15 years.
- 24:3515 years.
- 24:36Wow.
- 24:36If your husband is listening, she's just doing math.
- 24:40There's a lot going on here. I for sure know when I was married.
- 24:41So it's a very busy place.
- 24:44It's hard to, it's loud.
- 24:46It's hard to, just so you know.
- 24:47It's distracting.
- 24:48Yeah.
- 24:48It's very distracting.
- 24:49Thanks for having my back, Cam.
- 24:50I appreciate you.
- 24:50Because I experience these things all the time.
- 24:52But anyways, yes.
- 24:53Okay.
- 24:54So you're married now?
- 24:56Yeah.
- 24:57So been married.
- 24:57He was with me when I was a peace officer and then through the whole time with transportation.
- 25:03Right.
- 25:03And actually while I was working as a traffic safety consultant, we started Sunrise Estate Services.
- 25:09Okay.
- 25:10So I did both.
- 25:11So tell us what it is.
- 25:13What Sunrise Estate Services is?
- 25:15It's not self-explanatory.
- 25:18Well, when I first heard it, I'm not even going to say what I thought.
- 25:24You have to say it now.
- 25:26Well, Sunrise Estate, I thought, oh, you find plots for people to be buried in.
- 25:30That's what I did.
- 25:32No, that's what I thought.
- 25:33I thought, well, I need a plot.
- 25:36I'm dying or I'm dead and I need a plot. She reserved your cemetary plot.
- 25:38So I phoned Sunrise and I said, can you got a nice spot?
- 25:41Is it real estate for Blitz?
- 25:43I'm really sorry.
- 25:45But then that shows you where I'm at.
- 25:47So don't go home and go, is there a marketing way off base?
- 25:52No, it's just Cam.
- 25:54It's just Cam.
- 25:55It's all it is.
- 25:55I appreciate the insight, Cam.
- 25:57But I think that will, I've never heard that before.
- 26:02We do definitely get, we get the real estate questions of, oh, so you do real estate.
- 26:08So we can help with that, but no, we don't do real estate.
- 26:11So what do you do?
- 26:13We are a compassionate, full service estate company, which really should answer all of your questions, Cam.
- 26:20I'm not sure why you're staring at me.
- 26:26So we- It's like I, I'm going back to the burial plot.
- 26:33No, let's not go back to the burial plot.
- 26:34No, let's not.
- 26:34Okay.
- 26:35So.
- 26:35Let me expand.
- 26:36Yeah, please.
- 26:36So we work with executors.
- 26:39Yeah.
- 26:39We work with family members.
- 26:40We work with clients for any major transition in their life.
- 26:44Oh.
- 26:45To help them liquidate the contents of estates.
- 26:48Okay.
- 26:49So when we use the term estate, we're not referring to only passing away.
- 26:54Right.
- 26:55We're referring to a large quantity of items.
- 26:58So that could even be, we've done business liquidation, asset sales, things like that.
- 27:03So when people are looking and need an option.
- 27:06This is really cool.
- 27:07It is really cool.
- 27:08So as family members get older, and maybe they own this gigantic house, and they need to downsize, health reasons.
- 27:16Absolutely.
- 27:16All of those kinds of things.
- 27:17The family looks at it, and I know this, because I've just gone through it in the past couple of years with an aunt and uncle, and you look at it and go, where do we start?
- 27:25Where do we begin?
- 27:27A hundred percent.
- 27:28You, we should have gone to you.
- 27:30You should have.
- 27:30And you should have helped us.
- 27:32Why didn't you call me?
- 27:33Because we already had a plot.
- 27:36They were already good that way.
- 27:38I didn't know.
- 27:39I must say thank you for the opportunity for clearing this up.
- 27:41Yes, because otherwise we probably wouldn't have called.
- 27:44It was a pain in the, anyway, I loved my aunt and uncle, but it was like, okay.
- 27:49But it's hard.
- 27:50Yes.
- 27:51Yes.
- 27:51People live in...
- 27:52It's overwhelming.
- 27:53It's incredibly overwhelming.
- 27:55And where do you even start?
- 27:56Well, this is it.
- 27:56And how do you protect yourself so that...
- 27:59Because we all know that there's not so nice folks out there who will take advantage.
- 28:03Yes, they will.
- 28:04And how do you protect yourself from that?
- 28:06Especially in those hours and moments of when it's just tough times.
- 28:11Elderly people leaving their home is...
- 28:15Well, many have gone through it for sure, but it is a traumatic thing.
- 28:20And I have to be honest, going through it, you don't always think clearly.
- 28:26Maybe that's a good way to put it.
- 28:27Because you're wrapped up in just them not wanting to leave, but they have to leave.
- 28:33And you miss a whole bunch of stuff that you probably shouldn't miss because you're wrapped up with that.
- 28:39Well, for sure.
- 28:40And the big part is, again, going back to the whole thing of finding your people.
- 28:44Yeah.
- 28:45Find your team.
- 28:46Find a support system who would actually be there to help you.
- 28:50Right.
- 28:50Whether that's even just advice, guidance.
- 28:53Yeah.
- 28:53Whether that's hiring a company like ours to come in and provide assistance.
- 28:59And we will, 100 percent, we will do as much or as little as is required.
- 29:03And each client is different.
- 29:06Each house is different.
- 29:07Each set of circumstances is different.
- 29:09And like, oh, the stories.
- 29:13I bet.
- 29:14Oh, I bet.
- 29:15It's a lot from finding.
- 29:17You need to write a book.
- 29:18I know.
- 29:19Seriously, I'm serious about that.
- 29:21Because that would be a good book for people to pick up and read and go, okay, this is why we need you.
- 29:26This is why we need to prepare in life for you.
- 29:28Oh, absolutely.
- 29:29Yeah.
- 29:30Not leave it till the last minute, but plan ahead.
- 29:32She's got a planner.
- 29:33She can talk about that.
- 29:35Okay.
- 29:35She has a planner.
- 29:36Yeah.
- 29:36So we did come up with what we call an end of life planner.
- 29:40Really?
- 29:41Which is to prepare just for that.
- 29:43And so how do you find all this information?
- 29:47Oh, that's it.
- 29:48Because you're right in the midst of grief because somebody has passed away.
- 29:52You find out you're their executor, and you're like, wait, what?
- 29:56I don't even know what that word means.
- 29:58And what do you mean?
- 29:59I'm on the hook financially if things go awry.
- 30:02It's a huge responsibility.
- 30:04It is.
- 30:05And then you think, well, where do they bank?
- 30:09Do they have an accountant?
- 30:11And how many banks?
- 30:13What about their bills?
- 30:14Do they have a car parked on the street that I have to move?
- 30:17Because it's going to get towed if I don't move it?
- 30:19Yeah.
- 30:20All of these things start coming into question.
- 30:22And so we put together a planner that you can fill out, that you can put copies of your important documents.
- 30:29That is absolutely brilliant.
- 30:31Right?
- 30:32And you can give it to your executor.
- 30:34So then you tell them, you tell them, hey, I named you executor because you should always give them the heads up.
- 30:40That's a big heads up.
- 30:41Yeah.
- 30:42But then you can prepare them.
- 30:43Yes.
- 30:43Look, if anything happens, here's what you need to know.
- 30:47At least to get started.
- 30:49Nobody can cover everything.
- 30:50No, of course.
- 30:51Passwords change.
- 30:52But like you say, to get started, because if you leave it all to the last minute, it's overwhelming.
- 30:57Well, and then it's like, you walk into a house and you're like, okay, so I'm looking for passwords.
- 31:02Yes.
- 31:04Where are they?
- 31:05Where are they?
- 31:05Like, you know all the crazy stuff about social media and legacy planning?
- 31:10Yes.
- 31:10Who owns these photos?
- 31:11Yes.
- 31:12Oh, man.
- 31:12You guys.
- 31:14I've been there, done that.
- 31:15It's a couple of times and it's, yeah.
- 31:17Yeah.
- 31:18So we do have a planner.
- 31:20Where have you been?
- 31:21Where have you been the past five years of my life?
- 31:23Can you not this excited when I first came in?
- 31:26Now that you know who I am and what I do, you're like, wow.
- 31:29Well, two things, we've cleared up what you do.
- 31:32That was a big thing for me.
- 31:33That is a big thing.
- 31:34Secondly, everybody needs this.
- 31:37Everybody needs this.
- 31:38Everybody.
- 31:41So is it a physical planner?
- 31:43It's a piece, it's a document?
- 31:44Both.
- 31:44So it's a physical planner.
- 31:46It's also a PDF fillable version and it's all available on our website.
- 31:51So in a few minutes, we'll get to where people can get one of these.
- 31:53Sure.
- 31:54So I kind of need to know though, this is amazing, but why did you and your husband, why did you start this?
- 32:03Why?
- 32:04So as I talked previously before, with my mom being a special constable and following the path of my mom, unfortunately, I lost my mom when she was 51, she passed away and I was 25.
- 32:17Yeah.
- 32:18It was an awful time.
- 32:19Yes.
- 32:20It's still really hard to talk about.
- 32:21Yeah.
- 32:21My mom was like my person.
- 32:24Yeah, of course.
- 32:26As life takes you wherever it's going to take you, we ended up meeting a woman who worked for a bank as a trust officer.
- 32:35We ended up learning that these services were not out there.
- 32:39Right.
- 32:41My husband worked in oil and gas, oil prices dropped, he was in health and safety, so that's got to go.
- 32:48First one to be cut.
- 32:49I thought you were going to say health and safety dropped.
- 32:52It was just like that one.
- 32:53Don't need those people anymore, that's right.
- 32:55Kind of what happened.
- 32:56Yeah, exactly, right?
- 32:57Yeah, kind of, right?
- 32:58Yeah.
- 32:58Like a little bit what happened.
- 33:00And so it was just a matter of when I was a traffic safety consultant, I owned my own business because it was a contract.
- 33:07Yeah.
- 33:08And then it became a conversation of, isn't that weird that there's nobody who does this service?
- 33:13No, it's true.
- 33:14No, you're right.
- 33:15That's incredible.
- 33:17Like the true story is that we were sitting around a fire pit with said friend, maybe in the summer.
- 33:25And what does one do in Alberta, sitting around a fire pit?
- 33:28Maybe we had a drink.
- 33:29I was going to say a beverage, a beverage of choice, yeah.
- 33:32And all of a sudden my husband said, you know, we should do this.
- 33:35Yeah.
- 33:35And we're like, do what?
- 33:36I love this.
- 33:37And Sunrise Estate Services was born.
- 33:40These are the stories I absolutely, we should just do this.
- 33:44We should do this.
- 33:45I love this.
- 33:47Because that's my, that's where I live.
- 33:49We should just do this.
- 33:50Right?
- 33:51How come nobody's doing this?
- 33:52I don't know.
- 33:53We should do it.
- 33:53Exactly.
- 33:54And here we go.
- 33:55And 11 years later.
- 33:5711 years.
- 33:58Here we are.
- 33:59And so just real briefly, just real brief.
- 34:03Cam, I need you.
- 34:05I'm getting old.
- 34:07They call you in.
- 34:08What do you do for Cam?
- 34:10So we show up at Cam's house.
- 34:12We offer free no obligation estimates where you can walk us around.
- 34:17You can tell us your story.
- 34:18Because here's what we actually care about.
- 34:21People's stories.
- 34:21Yeah.
- 34:22Right?
- 34:22Yeah.
- 34:23I don't, nobody really cares about this coffee cup.
- 34:26Even though it is a Coffee In The Park, I'm sorry to break it to you, but nobody will care about the coffee cup.
- 34:31But I care how the coffee cup got to be here.
- 34:33Right.
- 34:34And your guys.
- 34:34That's right.
- 34:35The story.
- 34:35That's right.
- 34:35The story.
- 34:36Not the object.
- 34:36Not the object.
- 34:37No, yeah.
- 34:38Yeah.
- 34:38The story behind the story.
- 34:40Exactly.
- 34:40But those objects mean something to somebody.
- 34:42Right.
- 34:43And we want to be able to be respectful, be compassionate and be able to let that content carry on.
- 34:49Right.
- 34:50So we come in, we meet Cam.
- 34:52Cam tells us what he needs.
- 34:53Cam tells us he's moving.
- 34:55He tells us he needs some assistance moving.
- 34:58Absolutely.
- 34:59We have partners.
- 35:00We can work with you on that.
- 35:02We help Cam move into maybe assisted living, get them all set up.
- 35:06Right.
- 35:07Then we go into the house.
- 35:08That right there.
- 35:10Right.
- 35:11Oh, that.
- 35:13Wow.
- 35:13We could do a whole podcast on that.
- 35:15Oh, I know.
- 35:16Because been there, done that.
- 35:18And okay.
- 35:20And it's hard.
- 35:21And from there, in a real quick nutshell, we sort, we organize, we can value where I'm a licensed auctioneer, we're certified. I just blew Cam's mind.
- 35:35Lots of backstory here.
- 35:36Okay.
- 35:36You're an auctioneer.
- 35:38Yes.
- 35:38I'm a licensed auctioneer.
- 35:41I don't do live auctions.
- 35:43Because it was during COVID.
- 35:44Have you ever done a live auction?
- 35:45I have never done a live auction.
- 35:47In and out of 545, in and out of 455, in and out of 745, you ever do that?
- 35:50No.
- 35:51Auction this cup off right now.
- 35:53She's like, I can't, I can't.
- 35:55No.
- 35:55So I took the course.
- 35:56So it was during COVID.
- 35:57We used to do in-person estate sales.
- 36:01So we would go into a house and we would set it all up.
- 36:03We would price everything and then people would come.
- 36:06Then COVID happened.
- 36:07Yes.
- 36:07What do you do?
- 36:08You go online.
- 36:08Can I just say, and again, I know this is a little off track.
- 36:12Can I just say the day of the live auctioneers coming to a close, we're having in a couple of weeks, we're having Ben Kellert on our podcast, who was a national auctioneering champion.
- 36:25But anyway, that's a whole other thing.
- 36:26Anyway, okay, so you do auctions, online auctions.
- 36:29Online auctions.
- 36:29Yeah, which is becoming the thing.
- 36:31It is.
- 36:31It is.
- 36:32It is, and it's okay, it's good.
- 36:34It's different.
- 36:35Yeah.
- 36:35Live auctions, I love live auctions.
- 36:37Yeah, me too, but they're, you know.
- 36:39When you're auctioning off a bull, that's a whole different thing, but you know, yeah.
- 36:42Anyway, okay.
- 36:43It has its place.
- 36:44Yeah, it has its place, yeah.
- 36:44And now, as we know, COVID changed everything.
- 36:47Yeah, it sure did.
- 36:48So, you don't need to be an auctioneer, you don't need to have a license to do online auctions.
- 36:53Right.
- 36:53It's a bit of the Wild West.
- 36:54Right.
- 36:55Online auctions.
- 36:56My husband and I are, well, I'm very much the rule follower.
- 36:59Right.
- 37:00And we like to ensure that we have covered all of our bases.
- 37:04Right, for sure.
- 37:05Yeah.
- 37:05So, if you want to sell liquor on an online auction, you need a liquor license.
- 37:09Right.
- 37:09To get a liquor license, you need to be a licensed auctioneer.
- 37:12Right.
- 37:12Hence, Becky took a course through the Auctioneers Association, through training, became a licensed auctioneer.
- 37:19I will never do a live auction.
- 37:21I had to do my spiel.
- 37:24Yeah.
- 37:24I had to send it in, and that was the one and only. One and done, that was it.
- 37:28I made sure like my husband was in bed.
- 37:29I stayed up late so I could record it by myself.
- 37:32I was like, as much as I can joke.
- 37:36Man, I hate being the center of attention.
- 37:38Like I just hate it.
- 37:39So it's not my shtick, Cam.
- 37:43It could be your shtick.
- 37:44No.
- 37:46I'll tell you honestly, Jennifer, it's not really my shtick either.
- 37:50I know, isn't it funny?
- 37:52You turn it on when you need it.
- 37:53Yeah, I turn it on.
- 37:56Two peas in a pod, you and I, Cam.
- 37:57Well, I just, yeah, you do what you got to do.
- 37:59You put it out there and then after that, I'm happy to don't just hide.
- 38:02Just I'm happy to hide.
- 38:04But that's a whole other podcast.
- 38:05Anyway.
- 38:06Yeah.
- 38:06All right.
- 38:07So you're doing okay.
- 38:08This is great.
- 38:09So you do it all.
- 38:11We do it all.
- 38:11We take care of the, we remove the debris because every house has debris.
- 38:16Isn't that true?
- 38:17It's just how it works.
- 38:18We do donations.
- 38:20We certainly like to keep things out of landfills.
- 38:23And then we do the organizing for the online auction.
- 38:26We take the photos.
- 38:27We do the advertising.
- 38:28We do the pickups.
- 38:30We do the money collection.
- 38:32We do the disbursement of funds.
- 38:33Can I pre-hire her now?
- 38:35Like down the road?
- 38:35I know.
- 38:36No, but seriously.
- 38:37No, I was going to say.
- 38:38Honestly.
- 38:39Do you like pre-estate planning?
- 38:40We can.
- 38:41Absolutely.
- 38:42Yes.
- 38:42We got a call.
- 38:43We're about seven years into the company.
- 38:46And we got a call saying, hey, what are your plans for the next 10 years?
- 38:49Are you going to be in business?
- 38:50Oh, well, we're aiming to.
- 38:53Yes.
- 38:54Why do you ask?
- 38:55I'm putting your company in my will.
- 38:58So that my executor is to hire you.
- 39:00That's right.
- 39:01And we're like, what?
- 39:02It should be part of the pre-estate planning.
- 39:05Unreal.
- 39:05It's incredible.
- 39:06I've never felt more privileged in my life.
- 39:08I was blown away that somebody would think of our company.
- 39:11Do you work with banks?
- 39:12Do banks know about you?
- 39:14Banks do know about us.
- 39:15Yeah, we work with their trust departments.
- 39:17Do you work with trustee and insolvency people and all that kind of stuff?
- 39:23You know the insolvency people?
- 39:25Different ball game?
- 39:26It is different, but those are people I would love an introduction to.
- 39:29Absolutely.
- 39:32Bank foreclosures?
- 39:33Absolutely.
- 39:34We can liquidate content.
- 39:36We can make some money back.
- 39:38And then again, it's the world we all live in, but divorce.
- 39:42Divorce.
- 39:44Divorce.
- 39:44No, but when you have to split assets and who gets what and appraisals.
- 39:48Totally.
- 39:48And appraisals.
- 39:49We're certified personal property appraisers as well.
- 39:52Absolutely.
- 39:53This, so again, coming into the podcast thinking plots.
- 39:59Burial plots.
- 40:00Way off.
- 40:01Way off.
- 40:02Just to be clear, we do nothing with burial plots, just so you know.
- 40:07I'll tell you a story about, I was doing a funeral once and the guy fell in anyway, fell in the hole.
- 40:12But anyways, that's a whole other thing.
- 40:14But anyways, this is just amazing to me.
- 40:19I really do wish I had known you two years ago, because it's crazy.
- 40:27It is crazy.
- 40:28Time's flying by here.
- 40:31We got to talk about Becky's merch though, because look at her orange hoodie.
- 40:38She's got full merch.
- 40:39You got full merch.
- 40:41Online?
- 40:41I can buy your merch?
- 40:42You can buy all the merch.
- 40:43Hoodies, hats?
- 40:44Hoodies, hats, Converse shoes.
- 40:49What color?
- 40:50Any color.
- 40:52Oh, seriously?
- 40:52And you can put either my dogs on it or your dog on it.
- 40:57We got coffee cups.
- 40:58You guys, you have no idea what you're in for, Cam.
- 41:01This is, I'm telling you, man.
- 41:02These are Converse, but I wear white runners.
- 41:04That's my thing.
- 41:05I got white runners.
- 41:06Okay.
- 41:06Oh yes.
- 41:07When we're done, this is- This just like changed your whole world, didn't it?
- 41:10This podcast.
- 41:11This podcast.
- 41:12Again, I walk into some of these podcasts with these pre-conceived.
- 41:17I'm the king of preconceived notions, and I build them up till their firm and their, this is what it is, and this is what it's going to be, and then boom, and I love it.
- 41:28It's just like blowing me away.
- 41:30That's perfect.
- 41:31I feel like I want to be one of you.
- 41:33This is my other problem.
- 41:34I feel like I want to be one of your biggest champions now.
- 41:37Please do.
- 41:38Because I say that to a lot of people, I get in trouble because I'm like everybody's champion.
- 41:43But this is...
- 41:44This service is something everybody can use.
- 41:47Listen folks, I know you're listening to us everywhere, but this is amazing.
- 41:52You got to get...
- 41:53Some of you are older.
- 41:54Listen to me.
- 41:55Some of you listening to us are a little aged.
- 41:57You know who I'm talking to.
- 41:59You're listening right now.
- 42:00You need to phone Becky today, not tomorrow.
- 42:04Well, Thursday, Friday.
- 42:05You need to phone Becky Friday.
- 42:07Oh, I have a question.
- 42:08Becky, only Alberta or do you do...
- 42:10Yeah, do you go outside of Alberta?
- 42:12We do Western Canada.
- 42:13Western Canada.
- 42:15Okay.
- 42:15Okay, so all my BC friends, and again, you know who you are.
- 42:20You've been shopping for plots.
- 42:21This is not it.
- 42:23You should be talking to Becky.
- 42:24Agreed.
- 42:25Because this...
- 42:26And now I'm just being serious.
- 42:28This is really something because how many people do we know?
- 42:31How many families do we know?
- 42:33And here's the thing.
- 42:35Because of what I did for many years, I watched it very closely.
- 42:38How many families get ripped apart over, well, that's mine or that's mine or this is my...
- 42:45Or you don't even know where to start.
- 42:47Or you don't even know where to start.
- 42:49Some family members just throw up their hands and walk away.
- 42:52And I'll tell you a story.
- 42:53I'm gonna tell you a story about this because having gone through this, we went through it where basically it was just, we're gonna get rid of this.
- 43:01Yeah.
- 43:01And then it comes up a couple weeks ago, oh, I think we might want that.
- 43:09We already disposed of that.
- 43:12But I really want it.
- 43:13But at the time, you didn't say.
- 43:14You didn't want it.
- 43:15I know.
- 43:15Or yeah, you said you didn't want it.
- 43:18So.
- 43:19And to be an unbiased middle person.
- 43:22Yes.
- 43:23Yes.
- 43:23Sometimes that's what you need.
- 43:24You're an arbitrator, a mediator is what you are.
- 43:27And like, people on the podcast can't see my shoulders, like I got broad shoulders, like I can carry the weight of the world.
- 43:34Yeah.
- 43:35And to be that middle person, Becky.
- 43:37Who's just not involved sentimentally and can approach it in a logistic manner, it helps.
- 43:43And then someone who will go in and do the physical work.
- 43:46Yes.
- 43:47Someone who is certified and trained, and has 11 years experience, can make the decisions.
- 43:50And you know, you said something at the very beginning that stuck with me for these last 35 minutes, 40 minutes.
- 43:57Somebody you can trust.
- 43:58Who's not going to take advantage of you.
- 44:01It's all we aim.
- 44:02That's all we aim for.
- 44:03Is to be someone people can trust, and someone people can call for the truth.
- 44:08You might not like what we have to say, but I guarantee you, we will tell it to you straight.
- 44:12Yeah.
- 44:13And at that time, that's what you need.
- 44:15You need somebody to tell you straight.
- 44:17You need someone to look out for you.
- 44:18Because somebody can come in, and I won't use the word in German, ich bin ein, anyways, they'll take advantage of you, and then you'll be like, what happened?
- 44:29Exactly.
- 44:30Oh, okay.
- 44:31Well, before we get into the last question, Becky, where can they find you?
- 44:35Where, if somebody needs your service, and listen, everybody could use this service, where can they find you?
- 44:40What's your website?
- 44:40How do we get ahold of you?
- 44:41Website is SunriseEstateServices.ca.
- 44:45SunriseEstateServices.ca.
- 44:48On all the socials.
- 44:49On the socials, okay.
- 44:50On the website, you will also find our merch shop, where you can buy those cool converse.
- 44:55We're going right after this to look.
- 44:56I will be checking out, there's no doubt about that.
- 44:59Our dogs are our mascots, so you can buy KC and Finnegan sweaters and t-shirts.
- 45:04KC and Finnegan, come on.
- 45:06Mr.
- 45:06Dress Up was my hero.
- 45:08Mr.
- 45:08Dress Up, I love it.
- 45:10See, Cam normally goes on the tangent, but I'm going to go on a tangent.
- 45:13Okay, go.
- 45:14No big deal.
- 45:15I accidentally bumped in to Mr.
- 45:17Dress Up at the Edmonton International Airport.
- 45:20Come on.
- 45:21And I 100% fangirled.
- 45:23I was, it was, like my wedding was great, but it was not meeting Mr.
- 45:28Dress Up at YEG.
- 45:29Okay, and how was Mr.
- 45:31Dress Up?
- 45:31Was he like, authentic?
- 45:32Was he like he was on TV? Yes! No.
- 45:34He was so nice.
- 45:35I turned, I bumped him.
- 45:36I'm like, oh my gosh, I'm so sorry.
- 45:37Oh my god, it's Mr.
- 45:38Dress Up.
- 45:39I lost it.
- 45:41He was wonderful.
- 45:42I love that story.
- 45:43It's like the time I met- For those not listening in Canada, they might not know who Mr.
- 45:46Dress Up is, but if you grew up in Canada, and you watched him on TV, the kids who watched him.
- 45:51It was the Canadian book, Mr.
- 45:53Ross.
- 45:53That's a bit.
- 45:54It's like the time I met Don Cherry at the Toronto Airport at the Urinal, and he was just like he was on TV.
- 45:59I'm not even kidding.
- 46:01I was so impressed.
- 46:01Anyway, Casey and Finnegan were on Mr.
- 46:05Dress Up.
- 46:05Casey was a little, I'm not sure boy or girl, but it was a puppet.
- 46:11Finnegan was a dog puppet.
- 46:12The only thing Finnegan never talk.
- 46:14Once, I remember sitting there just say one thing, one thing, but he never did.
- 46:18But that was the mystique of Finnegan.
- 46:19He never talked.
- 46:20But his dad would be like.
- 46:21Anyway, it was really cool.
- 46:22I loved it.
- 46:23Okay.
- 46:24So those are my dogs, KC and Finnegan.
- 46:26They're two Bernese Newfie crosses.
- 46:29And so yes, they are our company mascots.
- 46:32You can call our number and you can talk to Finnegan.
- 46:35It's fantastic.
- 46:36I'm calling.
- 46:38Call our number and press 5.
- 46:39Finnegan doesn't talk though.
- 46:40No, but he barks at you.
- 46:41He barks.
- 46:42I'm calling just to hear Finnegan.
- 46:45Because of all these years.
- 46:46I know.
- 46:46And while we're serious, we also are light-hearted people.
- 46:50We are trying to bring joy in really awful, stressful, terrible times.
- 46:55Yes.
- 46:55Stressful.
- 46:56Absolutely.
- 46:56Stressful, stressful situation.
- 46:58And sometimes you just need to see a 120-pound Bernese Mountain Dog to give you a hug.
- 47:03That's all you need in life somedays.
- 47:03I just need Finnegan.
- 47:05You need Finnegan.
- 47:06I know.
- 47:06Or KC.
- 47:07Okay.
- 47:07Well, he's still young.
- 47:08Yeah.
- 47:09Yeah.
- 47:10Choose Finnegan.
- 47:10Becky, final question.
- 47:12Final question.
- 47:13What is the best piece of advice you've been given either personally or professionally that you carry with you to this day?
- 47:20Oh, geez.
- 47:21So the best advice, I took a course as a peace officer one time at a conference and it was about perspective.
- 47:30And so really the takeaway was this, embrace the suck.
- 47:35So it's actually coined by the US military, specifically the Navy SEALs to embrace the suck.
- 47:42It's where you take a really hard time, challenging times and you make the best of it.
- 47:48I love it.
- 47:48Yeah.
- 47:49So embrace the suck.
- 47:50I love it.
- 47:51That could be our motto for the week.
- 47:55To be fair, it could be the motto for Alberta winters.
- 47:58There's so many things.
- 48:00It's a lot.
- 48:01I'm getting a plaque made in my office with this.
- 48:04Embrace the suck.
- 48:05Yeah.
- 48:06Wow.
