- 0:02This is the Voices of Life podcast, a ministry
- 0:05of the Church for Life. Today, Pastor David brings
- 0:10us to October 22, 1774. The day the First Continental
- 0:18Congress reached beyond the English colonies
- 0:20and spoke directly to the people of Quebec. It
- 0:26was a message of invitation, of shared liberty.
- 0:31and of faith and freedom. Friends, welcome to
- 0:38the Voices of Life podcast. I'm Pastor David.
- 0:41Today we remember a remarkable moment when the
- 0:44American colonies extended their hand northward,
- 0:47inviting their Canadian neighbors to join in
- 0:50the cause of liberty. The address to the inhabitants
- 0:53of the province of Quebec was not a declaration
- 0:56of war, but a declaration of fellowship. it was
- 1:00a plea for unity among all who cherished freedom
- 1:04under god the congress watched with concern as
- 1:09the quebec act of seventeen seventy four reshaped
- 1:12the government of canada it granted sweeping
- 1:15powers to royal officials restricted representatives
- 1:18assemblies and established a system of law foreign
- 1:23to the english tradition of liberty to the delegates
- 1:25in philadelphia this was not merely a canadian
- 1:29issue it was a warning to all free men if tyranny
- 1:33could take root in quebec it could spread throughout
- 1:37the continent and so they wrote not in anger
- 1:41but in hope appealing to the conscience of the
- 1:45canadian people the address invited the inhabitants
- 1:49of Quebec to join the colonies in defending their
- 1:52rights. It reminded them that liberty was not
- 1:55the gift of kings, but the inheritance of all
- 1:59who lived under God's law. The Congress urged
- 2:02them to form representative assemblies, to speak
- 2:05freely, and to stand with their southern neighbors
- 2:08in peaceful resistance. It was a call to courage,
- 2:13a call to faith, a call to unity. the scene parchment
- 2:18carried by a courier across the northern wilderness
- 2:21bearing words of friendship and conviction it
- 2:25was the first time the colonies reached out beyond
- 2:28their borders to invite another people into the
- 2:32struggle for freedom though quebec did not join
- 2:35the cause the gesture itself revealed the heart
- 2:39of the american spirit a willingness to share
- 2:42liberty not hoard it Before we continue, we want
- 2:46to share something special with you. Our team
- 2:49has prepared a full narrative reconstruction
- 2:50of the Address to the Inhabitants of the Province
- 2:52of Quebec, written by the Continental Congress
- 2:55in October of 1774. It's a powerful message of
- 3:00unity, liberty, and hope. And now, for your listening
- 3:03pleasure, here is the narrative of the Quebec
- 3:06Address. Adopted by the First Continental Congress,
- 3:16October 22, 1774. Reconstructed for Voices of
- 3:23Life podcast. 250 years of faith and freedom.
- 3:28To the people of Quebec. Friends and fellow subjects
- 3:33of the British Empire. We, the delegates of the
- 3:37United Colonies of America, speak to you not
- 3:41as strangers. But as brethren, though separated
- 3:45by distance and language, we share one king,
- 3:49one faith, and one desire. That all men may live
- 3:53free under just laws of liberty and representation.
- 3:58We have learned with sorrow that the government
- 4:01established for you by the Quebec Act denies
- 4:03the rights, which are the birthright of every
- 4:06Englishman. It places power in the hands of a
- 4:10few. without the consent of the people. It abolishes
- 4:15trial by jury and subjects you to laws made without
- 4:19your voice or vote. We entreat you to consider.
- 4:24Liberty is not the gift of rulers, but the inheritance
- 4:28of all mankind. It is the safeguard of virtue,
- 4:32the shield of property, and the guardian of conscience,
- 4:36of faith and fellowship. We honor your devotion
- 4:41to God and your loyalty to peace. We do not ask
- 4:46you to forsake your religion or your customs.
- 4:50We ask only that you join us in defending those
- 4:53sacred rights which heaven itself has ordained.
- 4:57The right to speak freely, to worship freely,
- 5:01and to govern ourselves through representatives
- 5:03of our own choosing of the common cause. The
- 5:10same hand that oppresses one province may soon
- 5:13oppress another. If tyranny is permitted to take
- 5:17root in Quebec, it will spread across this continent.
- 5:22Let us therefore stand together, English and
- 5:26French, Protestant and Catholic, as one people
- 5:30under God, resolved to preserve the blessings
- 5:34of liberty for our children, of hope and providence.
- 5:40We pray that the Almighty will enlighten your
- 5:43minds and strengthen your hearts. May he guide
- 5:47you to see that our struggle is not against lawful
- 5:50authority, but against injustice. May he unite
- 5:55us in friendship and in faith that we may together
- 5:59restore peace and freedom to this land. Signed
- 6:07in Congress at Philadelphia. October 22, 1774.
- 6:14By order and in behalf of the delegates of the
- 6:18United Colonies of America. Signed by order of
- 6:24the Congress. Henry Middleton. President. The
- 6:37address closed with a prayerful appeal that the
- 6:40people of Quebec would see the justice of the
- 6:44colonial cause and join in defending the rights
- 6:47of mankind. It was a message grounded in faith,
- 6:51framed in reason, and spoken with love. It reminds
- 6:54us that liberty is not confined by borders, language,
- 6:59or creed. It is the common gift of the Creator.
- 7:04As we look back on October 22, 1774, we see a
- 7:08people reaching out in hope, believing that truth
- 7:11and freedom could unite nations. May we, in our
- 7:16own time, carry that same spirit of invitation.
- 7:19May we speak truth with grace, extend friendship
- 7:23with courage, and defend liberty with faith.
- 7:28I'm Pastor David, and I thank you for joining
- 7:32us today. May the Lord bless you and may he continue
- 7:35to guide this land and all who seek freedom under
- 7:39his care. Thank you for listening to the Voices
- 7:54of Life podcast. On behalf of Pastor David, And
- 8:02the church for life. May God bless you. May he
- 8:11keep you. And may his hand rest upon this land
- 8:16we call home. Until next time. Walk in truth.
- 8:25Stand in liberty. And live. For life.
