Latest / UNMASKED with Wesley Farnsworth / EP 63 - How to Heal From Church Hurt Without Losing Faith
Transcript
- 0:04I think one of the hardest wounds to talk about is church
- 0:08hurt, because when people hurt you, that's painful, but when
- 0:15people hurt you in a place that was supposed to feel safe, that
- 0:19hits differently. When it happens in church, it
- 0:25can shake things deeper because church isn't just where you
- 0:29went. It's where you worshipped, where
- 0:33you served, where you trusted, where you expected to encounter
- 0:40God. And when that place becomes a
- 0:44source of pain, it can feel confusing.
- 0:48You're not just grieving people. Sometimes you're grieving
- 0:52expectations, Community, Trust, the version of church you
- 0:59thought existed. And for some people, that hurt
- 1:04quietly becomes distance from God, not because they stopped
- 1:09believing in Him, but because the pain got attached to him.
- 1:15And today, I want to sit in that honesty for a minute because I
- 1:22think there's a lot of men and women carrying church hurt
- 1:26today. And they've never really
- 1:28processed it emotionally or spiritually.
- 1:34They just walked away carrying it.
- 1:43Welcome to Unmasked, where we take off the filters and get
- 1:46real about faith, failure, and finding freedom.
- 1:50I'm your host, Wesley Farnsworth, a dad, veteran,
- 1:54author, and a man who's learned that God does his best work in
- 1:57the middle of our mess. Each episode we have honest
- 2:00conversations with people who have walked through addiction,
- 2:04pain, or doubt, and with pastors, leaders, and everyday
- 2:09believers who are learning to live and lead authentically.
- 2:13So take a breath, pull up a chair, and let's get real.
- 2:17This is unmasked. I'm the first to admit church
- 2:25hurt is complicated. I've been there, I've
- 2:29experienced it. It's complicated because from
- 2:33the outside, people often minimize it.
- 2:38Church is full of imperfect people.
- 2:41Just forgive and move on. Keep your eyes on Jesus.
- 2:46Those are all things that people will say to minimize it.
- 2:50And listen. There's truth in those
- 2:52statements, but timing matters because when somebody is
- 2:57bleeding emotionally, quick answers can feel dismissive.
- 3:03Church Her often isn't just about one event.
- 3:07Sometimes it's betrayal, rejection.
- 3:12Sometimes it's spiritual manipulation or leadership
- 3:15failure. Maybe it's gossip or feeling
- 3:20unseen in the place that preaches community.
- 3:24And sometimes it's death by 1000, small wounds, and not just
- 3:29one big thing, just repeated disappointment, repeated hurt,
- 3:36repeated silence. The difficult part of all of
- 3:45this is that church isn't just another organization.
- 3:50It carries spiritual meaning. People meet God there, they
- 3:56serve there, they raise their families there.
- 4:00And so when pain happens there, it often gets tangled up with
- 4:05faith. The hurt doesn't just stay
- 4:09horizontal, it becomes vertical and people start asking
- 4:14questions that they never expected to ask.
- 4:17Where was God? Why did this happen?
- 4:22How could people who love Jesus act like this?
- 4:27And those are all honest questions.
- 4:30And I think God can handle honest questions, don't you?
- 4:37I think one of the biggest dangers of church Earth, though,
- 4:40is accidentally attaching people's failures to God's
- 4:44character. You see, people fail, leaders
- 4:48fail, churches fail, systems fail, but God, God does not
- 4:56fail. That distinction, my friends,
- 5:00matters. Because if we're not careful,
- 5:04the hurt done by people will slowly reshape how we see God,
- 5:09and before long we stop trusting Him because of what somebody
- 5:13else did. Not intentionally, but just
- 5:18gradually over time. And that can lead to a
- 5:24temptation to walk away completely.
- 5:28I can understand why some people choose to leave.
- 5:30I've been hurt by churches as well.
- 5:36Because pain mistakes. Because pain makes distance feel
- 5:41safe. If a church hurt you, distance
- 5:46feels protective. You think if I stay away, I
- 5:51can't get hurt again. And sometimes temporary distance
- 5:55is needed to heal. But isolation becomes dangerous
- 6:00when it also becomes permanent, because hurt has a way of
- 6:06talking when we're alone. And if pain stays unprocessed,
- 6:12if it becomes bitterness, that's when things go bad.
- 6:23I think a lot of people need to process church hurt, but they
- 6:28don't. Instead, they relocate it.
- 6:33They leave one church and just carry that wound into another.
- 6:38They stop serving, they stop trusting.
- 6:42They stop connecting. Or if they do stay in the
- 6:46church, physically they're not there, emotionally, they
- 6:51withdraw. They just show up, they smile,
- 6:55they volunteer, but internally they're constantly on guard.
- 7:01They're disconnected. They're just waiting for it for
- 7:04it to happen again. And honestly, that's the kind of
- 7:08hurt that changes people. I think men specifically handle
- 7:16church hurt by shutting down. Not talking, not processing,
- 7:21just withdrawing. They stop attending, they stop
- 7:25bleeding, they stop engaging. Spiritually and externally it
- 7:30looks like disinterest, but internally it's grief,
- 7:35disappointment, betrayal. Because men often process things
- 7:41privately because nobody needs to see it, so they just
- 7:46disappear. And when I think about that, it
- 7:50breaks my heart because men hear me when I say this.
- 7:56Don't lose faith. You may have lost trust, but
- 8:05don't lose faith. I think healing starts with
- 8:13honesty. You have to name the wound.
- 8:18Was it rejection, betrayal, manipulation, abuse of
- 8:24authority, disappointment, unmet expectations?
- 8:31Whatever it is, name it. You can't heal what you refuse
- 8:36to identify. And sometimes church her get
- 8:39spiritually bypassed. We just rush straight to the
- 8:44forgiveness without acknowledging the pain.
- 8:48But the grief matters, just like honesty matters.
- 8:54God never asks us to pretend that wounds don't exist.
- 9:00And I think this part matters because Jesus himself was hurt
- 9:05by religious people. Did you hear me there?
- 9:10Jesus himself was hurt by religious people.
- 9:18He experienced misunderstanding, rejection, hypocrisy.
- 9:25The people who should have recognized him often resisted
- 9:29him. And somehow he never allowed
- 9:33broken people to redefine the Father.
- 9:39Let that sit for a second, because that is difficult.
- 9:45He experienced pain without confusing human failure with
- 9:50God's character, and that is not easy, but it's important.
- 9:59I think it's also important to realize that forgiveness is not
- 10:03the same as pretending. I'm going to say this as clearly
- 10:09as I can. Forgiveness is not pretending.
- 10:14Forgiveness is not minimizing. Forgiveness is not immediately
- 10:20trusting again. And forgiveness does not mean
- 10:23that the wound wasn't real. Some people here forgive and
- 10:30think it means act like it didn't happen.
- 10:34That's not healing. That, my friends, is avoidance.
- 10:39Real forgiveness usually walks through grief first.
- 10:45A lot of people talk about God after church hurt, but not with
- 10:49God. And there's a difference there.
- 10:54They deconstruct privately, they process things with friends,
- 10:59they carry anger internally, but they never actually bring the
- 11:04wound honestly before God. And honestly, that is where the
- 11:09healing starts. Not because answers arrive
- 11:13instantly, but because the relationship stays open.
- 11:18Prayer doesn't have to sound polished.
- 11:21Sometimes it just sounds like God, I'm angry, God, I'm
- 11:26disappointed, God, I don't know what to do with this.
- 11:33Talk to him like you would your friend sitting across from you
- 11:37at the table, because that's what he wants.
- 11:42That honesty. It matters.
- 11:51In community. It still matters too.
- 11:55This can be hard to say, but I think it's true.
- 11:59Church hurt does not mean that community stops mattering.
- 12:06Because healing often happens with people.
- 12:09Not perfect people. Safe people, healthy people,
- 12:14honest people. And yes, finding those people
- 12:18after hurt can feel terrifying. But isolation rarely heals
- 12:24relational wounds. Healthy connection often does
- 12:31say that. Again, isolation rarely heals
- 12:35relational wounds, but healthy connection often does.
- 12:40It does it slowly, carefully, and overtime.
- 12:48I want to slow down here for just a second because I think
- 12:51this is next part is important for you to hear.
- 12:55Church, it's important. But my friends, church is not
- 13:00God. People represent him
- 13:03imperfectly. We are broken people in a broken
- 13:08world. We are not perfect, so people
- 13:12are going to represent Him imperfectly.
- 13:16Sometimes, though they do it beautifully.
- 13:19Other times it's going to be painful.
- 13:22But human failure does not erase divine goodness.
- 13:28Your relationship with God is bigger than the place where you
- 13:31got hurt. Don't let broken people become
- 13:35the final interpreter of God's heart.
- 13:42Take the time and bring the herd to God.
- 13:47And when you're ready to return to the church, it'll be there
- 13:53for some people listening. You may be in the middle of all
- 13:56this. You may not yet be ready, and
- 14:00that's OK Healing has timing. But when you're ready, move
- 14:06slowly. Look for health, look for
- 14:11humility, look for places where masks come off.
- 14:17You don't need a perfect church. You need honest people pursuing
- 14:21Jesus together. Those are completely different
- 14:26things. Church her is real, but it
- 14:32doesn't have to become spiritual exile.
- 14:36You are allowed to grieve, you are allowed to heal, and you are
- 14:41allowed to process. But don't build your entire
- 14:44future around a wound, because pain was never meant to become
- 14:49your identity. So here's your action step this
- 14:53week. Ask yourself this honestly, what
- 14:58part of my church hurt am I still carrying that I haven't
- 15:02actually brought before God? Not discussed, not analyzed, not
- 15:08avoided, but brought before Him. And then spend 10 quiet minutes
- 15:14this week just telling God the truth about it all.
- 15:19Not polished, not highly edited. Just honest, honest
- 15:25conversation. Because healing begins where
- 15:29honesty and God finally meet. Thanks for joining me today on
