- 1:16Speaker 1: six seconds Murray cholinsous, Oh Yes it was miraculous. No
- 1:32Speaker 1: one better and We're actually really fortunate Iron Eagle was
- 1:35Speaker 1: on the call, one of the good guys in the
- 1:37Speaker 1: business who was just so on point on that play
- 1:40Speaker 1: by play. They're one of the most memorable moments from
- 1:42Speaker 1: the season WEEKDN Cardinals Bills Kyler Murray connecting with the
- 1:47Speaker 1: hop that last second touchdown to take out the Bills
- 1:50Speaker 1: thirty two to thirty. Now the plays since been called
- 1:53Speaker 1: the Hail Murray, but before that nickname was given to
- 1:56Speaker 1: the play, it already had a name and went by
- 1:58Speaker 1: the Hail Mary. It's going on, guys, I'm like yam
- 2:00Speaker 1: and is always joined by Adit King Kabwalla. Hi, everybody,
- 2:05Speaker 1: I'm humped for this one. You should be pumped for
- 2:06Speaker 1: this one because today we're gonna do a nice little
- 2:09Speaker 1: deep dive on what could be the most exciting play
- 2:12Speaker 1: in football. It's NFL explained the Hail Mary now a
- 2:15Speaker 1: d D. During our grab Bag episode, there were a
- 2:18Speaker 1: couple of questions asked about football terminology, and we thought,
- 2:22Speaker 1: you know, things like shotgun and flee flickering, But we
- 2:24Speaker 1: felt like with the Hail Mary, we wanted to go
- 2:27Speaker 1: all in on something that I know the two of
- 2:29Speaker 1: us absolutely love to see the play that gets us
- 2:31Speaker 1: all at the end of our seats, and then we
- 2:32Speaker 1: certainly go crazy when the past is actually completed. Well,
- 2:35Speaker 1: even either way, Mike, Frankly, when the ball is in
- 2:38Speaker 1: the air, you're sort of like, Okay, who's going to
- 2:39Speaker 1: get better position and what's going to happen, Because look,
- 2:41Speaker 1: at the end of the day, a hail mary also
- 2:43Speaker 1: has a chance of being an interception, almost just as
- 2:46Speaker 1: good of a chance of being an interception as it
- 2:47Speaker 1: doesn't being caught, maybe a greater chance. And there are
- 2:50Speaker 1: quite a few quarterbacks that don't want that interception, padding
- 2:55Speaker 1: their statue to some degree. So, especially when you see
- 2:58Speaker 1: the hail mary at the end of the first half
- 3:00Speaker 1: as opposed to the end of the game, that is rare.
- 3:03Speaker 1: It takes me back. I mean, I was in Green
- 3:05Speaker 1: Bay when Eli Manning at halftime heaves a ball up
- 3:10Speaker 1: and you see all of these hands go up in
- 3:13Speaker 1: the end zone and Hakim Knicks is huge mix because
- 3:16Speaker 1: he had huge he had like a I don't know,
- 3:18Speaker 1: five xcel glove size. All of a sudden, Hakim Knicks's
- 3:22Speaker 1: gloves are higher than everybody else's and he comes down
- 3:25Speaker 1: with the ball in the momentum and the excitement and
- 3:28Speaker 1: all of that. I'm all into it. Yeah, it's funny
- 3:31Speaker 1: you mentioned the statistical standpoint. You know, I've talked to
- 3:34Speaker 1: enough NBA players and college players to know a lot
- 3:36Speaker 1: of times they don't like the full court heave or
- 3:39Speaker 1: the half court shot. They'll do it when they know
- 3:42Speaker 1: the time is actually expired. They'll keep it close just
- 3:44Speaker 1: so that they're not worried about that little miss affecting
- 3:48Speaker 1: some of those statistics. But look, we've discussed at length
- 3:51Speaker 1: a lot of the excitement for for Kickers and the
- 3:54Speaker 1: whole thing add with our ice and the Kicker episode.
- 3:57Speaker 1: But look, at the end of the day, bigger rush
- 3:59Speaker 1: and then a quarterback who launches that ball. I would
- 4:01Speaker 1: imagine to me that is really, in a lot of
- 4:03Speaker 1: ways the most exciting thing. But you and I need
- 4:06Speaker 1: to get into sort of the history behind this actual moment.
- 4:11Speaker 1: Let's start with where the name actually comes from. You
- 4:13Speaker 1: were saying before we did the episode, why do we
- 4:16Speaker 1: say shotgun? Why do we safely flicker? Well, why do
- 4:19Speaker 1: we call it hail Mary? And that's because it is
- 4:23Speaker 1: sort of this idea of to mind intervention, don't you think,
- 4:26Speaker 1: Oh yes, yeah, It's actually based on some newspaper clippings
- 4:30Speaker 1: from nineteen twenty two from a college football game. Not surprising,
- 4:35Speaker 1: Notre Dame actually a part of it. In Georgia Tech,
- 4:37Speaker 1: the Hail Mary was not used once, actually twice in
- 4:41Speaker 1: the huddle on fourth down the Hail Mary prayer was used.
- 4:45Speaker 1: A player who played in the game is quoted as
- 4:47Speaker 1: having said, in the huddle, boys, let's have a Hail Mary. Now. Look,
- 4:52Speaker 1: I've done enough of the Catholic masses on Sundays not
- 4:54Speaker 1: to mention Catholic school in my whole life to know
- 4:56Speaker 1: exactly all of this stuff. Hail Mary, full of grace.
- 4:59Speaker 1: The Lord is with the I'm actually having flashbacks now
- 5:02Speaker 1: to Sister Bridget in elementary school. Needless to say, the
- 5:04Speaker 1: prayer during the game game was answered because Elmer Laden
- 5:08Speaker 1: converted on that fourth down a d D and scored
- 5:10Speaker 1: a touchdown. Well, obviously this came from a Catholic school
- 5:13Speaker 1: like Notre Dame. I mean, you have seen the touchdown,
- 5:15Speaker 1: Jesus right, Mike, Oh yes, But let me tell you this,
- 5:19Speaker 1: it did take a little bit longer for the term
- 5:22Speaker 1: to make its way into the modern day NFL vernacular.
- 5:27Speaker 1: That didn't happen until nineteen divisional playoff game Cowboys Vikings
- 5:33Speaker 1: Hall of Famer Roger Snowback famously throws a fifty yard
- 5:37Speaker 1: touchdown pass for the lead to Drew Pierson with twenty
- 5:42Speaker 1: four seconds left on the clock. Well, the Cowboys native
- 5:45Speaker 1: miracle Roger, He's going log down the near sideline for
- 5:49Speaker 1: dru Haarrison. Harrison makes the catch at the five. Let's down.
- 5:53Speaker 1: What's believe it? Stop Harrison on the yard touchdown. After
- 5:59Speaker 1: the game, they asked what I was thinking. I said,
- 6:01Speaker 1: I closed my eyes instead of hail Mary. The AP
- 6:04Speaker 1: writer wrote the story that the hail mary pass won
- 6:07Speaker 1: the game. The term hail mary started that moment in
- 6:10Speaker 1: the NFL. I'm kind of proud of that. Aaron Rodgers
- 6:18Speaker 1: and a lot of people have thrown hail mary passes,
- 6:21Speaker 1: but they didn't throw the hail Mary pass. The Cowboys
- 6:24Speaker 1: then went on to win seventeen fourteen and advanced to
- 6:28Speaker 1: the NFC Championship. You know what I love about that, Mike.
- 6:32Speaker 1: I was just with our colleague and our friend and
- 6:34Speaker 1: Hall of Famer Kurt Warner the other night, and there's
- 6:39Speaker 1: a new movie out on Kurt Warner's life, and he
- 6:41Speaker 1: was saying, what's so fascinating about this is this generation
- 6:44Speaker 1: of NFL players right now who sure they know that
- 6:47Speaker 1: you know, Kurt's on TV, and they know that Kurt's
- 6:49Speaker 1: in the Hall of Fame, but they don't really know
- 6:51Speaker 1: his actual story. And that Kurt was saying is because
- 6:56Speaker 1: your legacy as a player in the NFL is somewhat finite,
- 7:00Speaker 1: right And when we get to our records episode, we'll
- 7:02Speaker 1: talk about that. But what Stalbach is saying here is
- 7:07Speaker 1: why he is so proud of this is because that
- 7:10Speaker 1: term lives on forever. I mean, no matter what, he
- 7:12Speaker 1: has made an indelible change on the game, We're never
- 7:16Speaker 1: going to call that anything other than the Hail Mary.
- 7:18Speaker 1: It's really cool because I actually saw some interviews that
- 7:20Speaker 1: Drew Pierson, by the way, on NFL Network, just talking
- 7:23Speaker 1: about those moments, and it's kind of cool to relive it.
- 7:26Speaker 1: You hear the audio, but when you hear some of
- 7:27Speaker 1: these players, like actually talking about that moment and Pierson
- 7:31Speaker 1: talking about that moment, you can sort of see the emotion,
- 7:33Speaker 1: hear it in their voice and see it on their face.
- 7:36Speaker 1: But before we actually walk you down memory lane, as
- 7:38Speaker 1: some of the most memorable hail mary's. Ever, I think
- 7:41Speaker 1: it's important to try to define what a hail mary
- 7:43Speaker 1: is and then get into some of the statistics behind it.
- 7:46Speaker 1: We reached out to stats LLC, who is our official
- 7:49Speaker 1: stats provider for answers, and funny they actually don't have
- 7:52Speaker 1: a hard definition for a hail mary. Instead, they said
- 7:55Speaker 1: they rely on the eye test on film to determine
- 7:58Speaker 1: which pass is actually qualified. Love that term eye test.
- 8:02Speaker 1: Some factors considered, including game situations like the position down
- 8:07Speaker 1: the clock to score, and what actual play was called
- 8:09Speaker 1: basically just verts, right, like just wide receivers running down
- 8:12Speaker 1: the football field and getting it done and then hopefully
- 8:15Speaker 1: delivering and the prayers are answered in that critical moment. Well, Mike,
- 8:18Speaker 1: it really makes sense. I mean, if you put me
- 8:20Speaker 1: on the spot and said, what is a hail mary?
- 8:22Speaker 1: I would think of it as a the final play
- 8:25Speaker 1: or maybe two attempts at it, but the final play
- 8:27Speaker 1: at the end of a half or the end of
- 8:29Speaker 1: a game. It's got to be a big long throw.
- 8:33Speaker 1: It can't be just this crazy lateral how many guys
- 8:35Speaker 1: can touch the ball and I think that that's it. Yeah,
- 8:39Speaker 1: clock end of the play, and it's got to be
- 8:41Speaker 1: a deep path, and it's got to be a score
- 8:44Speaker 1: that you absolutely need. Now, Mike, this topic is a
- 8:46Speaker 1: little bit hard to quantify, and really, actually technically they
- 8:49Speaker 1: didn't start keeping hail Mary statistics until two thousand six,
- 8:53Speaker 1: so let's primarily focus on the last fifteen years since
- 8:57Speaker 1: those stats have been kept, except that maybe the most
- 9:02Speaker 1: iconic hail Mary, not the first one, not the stob
- 9:05Speaker 1: I one, but the most iconic one it was actually
- 9:09Speaker 1: the Haill Flutie and that one happened before two thousand six,
- 9:12Speaker 1: and to be fair, it wasn't actually in an NFL game,
- 9:14Speaker 1: but Flutie was an NFL quarterback, so you know there's
- 9:18Speaker 1: a parallel there, Mike. You'll buy it right, Oh yeah, no,
- 9:21Speaker 1: I'm I'm with you. Like any long bombs we can get,
- 9:24Speaker 1: I'll take alright. Doug Flutie, Boston College. There's a sixty
- 9:30Speaker 1: three yard touchdown to Gerard Phelan, the last second touchdown
- 9:35Speaker 1: gives Boston College a win over the Miami Hurricanes, the
- 9:39Speaker 1: big bad Miami Hurricanes. And there are a lot of people,
- 9:43Speaker 1: Mike that consider it one of the greatest sports plays
- 9:45Speaker 1: of all time, in no small part because of who
- 9:48Speaker 1: actually executed the past. Yeah, it looks in a lot
- 9:51Speaker 1: of ways. It was really awesome. And Flutie, by the way,
- 9:54Speaker 1: was actually pretty nasty in that game, and nasty in
- 9:57Speaker 1: a good way. It's sort of look, I did a
- 9:59Speaker 1: little Wikipedia search here, and I thought this was kind
- 10:01Speaker 1: of like a cool little deal. Uh. He threw the
- 10:04Speaker 1: ball from his own thirty seven. Now, he certainly wasn't
- 10:06Speaker 1: a prototypical perfect looking quarterback in terms of the size
- 10:09Speaker 1: and the height. He's five tens, so kudos to him.
- 10:11Speaker 1: I was like the shorter guys for obvious reasons. But
- 10:14Speaker 1: the quarterback, so he throws the ball at least sixty
- 10:17Speaker 1: three yards against thirty mile per hour wins. So this
- 10:21Speaker 1: is like in a day and age where we weren't
- 10:22Speaker 1: talking about next gen stats and Cynthia Freeland wasn't dropping
- 10:25Speaker 1: like serious dimes on us. So to me, that was
- 10:27Speaker 1: kind of cool. And that was after he'd already thrown
- 10:29Speaker 1: the ball a ton right forty five times in the game.
- 10:33Speaker 1: Fluty finishes with four seventy two three touchdowns, with the
- 10:36Speaker 1: third one being truly awesome. All right, but back to
- 10:40Speaker 1: those metrics are research team in two thousand six. Since
- 10:43Speaker 1: that time, there have been three hundred and fifty seven
- 10:46Speaker 1: hail mary pass attempts in a game in the NFL,
- 10:49Speaker 1: including the playoffs. How about this, though it's kind of surprising,
- 10:52Speaker 1: only thirty nine completions, so nearly one in nine get completed,
- 10:57Speaker 1: with only a seven percent touchdown rate on the flip side.
- 11:01Speaker 1: One in four of those gets intercepted. So if we
- 11:04Speaker 1: want to do the statistical anal says, it's really important
- 11:06Speaker 1: to know you're not throwing a hail mary unless you
- 11:08Speaker 1: abstually have to based off some of those numbers. Well,
- 11:10Speaker 1: and that's what we were talking about earlier, right, I
- 11:12Speaker 1: got the statistics wrong, obviously, But as I was saying,
- 11:16Speaker 1: I do know of quarterbacks who are afraid to throw
- 11:18Speaker 1: the past because they don't want to be picked off.
- 11:20Speaker 1: And I also know once that are afraid to throw
- 11:23Speaker 1: the past because then people will know whether they really
- 11:26Speaker 1: can actually do it or not. I mean, we always
- 11:29Speaker 1: knew that Joe Flacco had an arm, but not everybody
- 11:31Speaker 1: really necessarily has that arm. So, Mike, there are actually
- 11:36Speaker 1: quarterbacks who've thrown a hail mary more than ten times
- 11:41Speaker 1: in their career. And since you know I love quizzes,
- 11:44Speaker 1: I'm going to make you guess, but no, no no, no,
- 11:48Speaker 1: not yet, not yet. I'm giving you a chance to
- 11:49Speaker 1: think about it. Okay, so you've got a few seconds
- 11:52Speaker 1: right here, you m all over that which three quarterbacks
- 11:55Speaker 1: have thrown a hail mary more than ten times in
- 11:58Speaker 1: their career. When we come back on the NFL, exclaimed,
- 12:01Speaker 1: we will relive some of the greatest hail mary's and
- 12:05Speaker 1: find out what future Hall of Famer has he yet
- 12:08Speaker 1: to complete a hail mary of his own bucket lest item,
- 12:12Speaker 1: We'll do our best to identify what quarterback could be
- 12:15Speaker 1: considered the king of hail mary's. That and much more. Mike,

- 13:54Speaker 1: a d d kin kaballah with you. And before the
- 13:56Speaker 1: break we said there were three quarterbacks who have thrown
- 13:59Speaker 1: ten or more hal Mary's in their career. But before
- 14:02Speaker 1: we get there, here's an interesting list of qbs who
- 14:04Speaker 1: have never completed a Hail Mary. And it's actually kind
- 14:08Speaker 1: of surprising here. Derek Carr, Josh Allen, Patrick Mahomes, Dak Prescott,
- 14:14Speaker 1: Philip Rivers, Ben Roethlisberg, you know, would have been kind
- 14:17Speaker 1: of cool. Add because you were there a couple of
- 14:19Speaker 1: weeks ago hines Field, big Ben's last game in front
- 14:22Speaker 1: of that home crowd. Can you imagine if there was
- 14:24Speaker 1: a hail Mary that he was able to check that
- 14:26Speaker 1: off the list? I mean, that would have been incredible, sure,
- 14:29Speaker 1: except that I think he passed for his average past
- 14:31Speaker 1: attempt that night was one two yards. It was like
- 14:35Speaker 1: thirty some id passes in the first half of ninety
- 14:37Speaker 1: six yards. The point is you get a win and
- 14:38Speaker 1: he was celebrated, so a nice little bow on big
- 14:41Speaker 1: Ben's career. Yes, And it was the most electric, amazing atmosphere,
- 14:46Speaker 1: And it was sixty something thousand people lauding the person
- 14:50Speaker 1: that has been their franchise quarterback for eighteen years, which
- 14:52Speaker 1: is awesome. Eighteen years, one uniform, no hail mary's, but
- 14:56Speaker 1: plenty of other major statistical records. That he's got rock
- 14:59Speaker 1: in that Pittsburgh Steelers uniform. But the most surprising of
- 15:02Speaker 1: the bunch of that list of players who has never
- 15:04Speaker 1: thrown a hail mary Tom Brady, and earlier this year,
- 15:08Speaker 1: he actually told Aaron Andrews that a hail mary is
- 15:10Speaker 1: still one of things that he wants to accomplish in
- 15:12Speaker 1: his career. He's pretty much done everything, and since he's
- 15:15Speaker 1: going to play for another twenty years adity, I'm sure
- 15:18Speaker 1: he's going to be able to check off hail mary
- 15:20Speaker 1: on the box. I think you've heard me say this
- 15:23Speaker 1: multiple times. Tom Brady is older than me, so I
- 15:25Speaker 1: hope he played forever because as long as he plays,
- 15:28Speaker 1: I can still feel somewhat young. In any case. Back
- 15:31Speaker 1: to our top hail mary throwers. So I asked you
- 15:36Speaker 1: to guess you've had some time to think about it.
- 15:38Speaker 1: What three quarterbacks since two thousand six have attempted the
- 15:43Speaker 1: most hail mary's. Okay, there's one name that certainly comes
- 15:46Speaker 1: to mind, and that's Aaron Rodgers because you actually kind
- 15:50Speaker 1: of touched on it a little bit earlier in this podcast.
- 15:52Speaker 1: Guys that have the arm strength to be able to
- 15:55Speaker 1: do it. Rogers, I feel like he can just flick
- 15:57Speaker 1: his wrist and that thing's going forty yards anyway. And
- 16:00Speaker 1: then when there's actually like an attempt to throw the bomb,
- 16:03Speaker 1: Rogers has got it. So on the list, I would
- 16:05Speaker 1: say Aaron Rodgers has to be in the top three. Well, ding, ding, ding,
- 16:08Speaker 1: that is very good, and that one is a little
- 16:11Speaker 1: bit obvious. But let me tell you who's not. Kirk
- 16:15Speaker 1: Cousin has thrown ten and Andy Dalton has attempted. Now,
- 16:24Speaker 1: both Andy Dalton and Aaron Rodgers have actually connected on
- 16:27Speaker 1: three hail mary's, all of them for touchdowns. Cousins has
- 16:33Speaker 1: only connected on one touchdown and he's thrown three picks. Now.
- 16:38Speaker 1: He has acknowledged that perhaps the technique needs a little
- 16:42Speaker 1: bit of work, but he says his approach is very
- 16:46Speaker 1: very specific, that basically his front shoulder better be tilted
- 16:49Speaker 1: up and that his back shoulder better be down because
- 16:52Speaker 1: it's not a regular pass. He says, my kids, I
- 16:56Speaker 1: think how he described it was a moonshot where he
- 16:59Speaker 1: wants the ball kind of arcing up and then coming
- 17:02Speaker 1: down at the receiver's in the end zone. Here's another
- 17:05Speaker 1: crazy one. The highest career hail mary completion percentage. That's
- 17:12Speaker 1: somebody who completed two of five, and that's somebody is
- 17:15Speaker 1: Jamis Winston. Famous Jamis making an appearance on the pot
- 17:20Speaker 1: on the Hail Mary edition Famous Chamis. So overall, since
- 17:25Speaker 1: two thousand six, there have been one hundred and fifty
- 17:27Speaker 1: six Hail Mary pass attempts to win or tie a game.
- 17:33Speaker 1: Seven were completed for a game telling touchdown. Of those
- 17:36Speaker 1: seven touchdowns, three ultimately led to a win in regulation,
- 17:40Speaker 1: the other four forced or time but didn't ultimately lead
- 17:45Speaker 1: to a win. The three of those were completed for
- 17:48Speaker 1: a game winning touchdown with no time remaining on the clock.
- 17:52Speaker 1: And Rogers actually leads the entire group with the longest
- 17:57Speaker 1: winning touchdown completion. So one hundred and fifty six Hail
- 18:01Speaker 1: Mary pass attempts since two thousand six. The longest one
- 18:05Speaker 1: that was completed for a winning touchdown was by Aaron
- 18:10Speaker 1: Rodgers and went for sixty one yards. Take a list
- 18:15Speaker 1: of Mike Rogers in trouble. It's gonna get there. They
- 18:20Speaker 1: turned thirty two yesterday. There's a half a vantage Promyn
- 18:29Speaker 1: Rocher Rogers for the lack off touchsown. But Holy Packers, now,
- 18:38Speaker 1: there is no way you can forget the miracle in
- 18:42Speaker 1: Motown Week thirteen, Packers and Lines Rogers able to connect
- 18:48Speaker 1: with Richard Rogers for the walk off whim Addy. Kind
- 18:52Speaker 1: of a cool connection here. Maybe some of our listeners
- 18:55Speaker 1: of a certain age would remember this play. But the
- 18:57Speaker 1: Stanford Cal game the play when the band is on
- 19:00Speaker 1: the field. So Rogers's dad, Richard Rochards Senior, actually played
- 19:05Speaker 1: for Cal in that particular game when the band was
- 19:08Speaker 1: on the field. He actually handled two of the five
- 19:11Speaker 1: laterals to end that game. So for me, there must
- 19:14Speaker 1: be something genetically in the Rogers name when it comes
- 19:17Speaker 1: to Aaron Rodgers making a ton of hail Mary throws,
- 19:20Speaker 1: Richard Rogers being on the receiving end of that, and
- 19:23Speaker 1: then Richard Rogers Jr. Being on the receiving end of
- 19:25Speaker 1: that past, and then Richard Rogers Sr. Playing in one
- 19:28Speaker 1: of those iconic games. Just kind of a cool little
- 19:30Speaker 1: factoid there, Sure, but I don't consider a crazy lateral
- 19:33Speaker 1: play a hail Mary. But anyway, since we did that one,
- 19:36Speaker 1: I think it's important that we go through the other
- 19:38Speaker 1: two game winning hail Mary touchdown. So the first one
- 19:42Speaker 1: Week ten, two thousand ten, Jacksonville, Houston, David Gerard throws
- 19:48Speaker 1: a fifty yard touchdown to Mike Thomas to beat Houston.
- 19:55Speaker 1: And what actually happened was that the defender batted the
- 19:58Speaker 1: ball into Mike Thomas's hand. I mean, Mike, I'll never
- 20:02Speaker 1: forget the first Hail Mary that I was present for.
- 20:05Speaker 1: It was to that and twelve. The Giants were at
- 20:07Speaker 1: the Packers. It was the NFC Divisional round, end of
- 20:11Speaker 1: the first half, and Eli Manning keeps the ball down
- 20:17Speaker 1: field into the end zone. You see all of these
- 20:20Speaker 1: hands go up and then that one big, huge set
- 20:24Speaker 1: of myths. Kim Nicks his gloves. He I don't even
- 20:28Speaker 1: remember exactly, but I think he wore a size four
- 20:30Speaker 1: xcel glove. His hands were so big they were above
- 20:33Speaker 1: everybody else's. He trapped that pass from Manning against his
- 20:39Speaker 1: face mask actually, and I remember he fell to the ground.
- 20:42Speaker 1: It was a touchdown. Everybody swarmed him, and the momentum
- 20:46Speaker 1: of that game completely changed. It was like they scored
- 20:49Speaker 1: that touchdown, they go into the halftime break and you
- 20:52Speaker 1: knew that the Giants had won the game, and we're
- 20:55Speaker 1: going to go onto the NFC Championship game, and then
- 20:58Speaker 1: of course they went on to the Super Bowl, and
- 20:59Speaker 1: then of course they won the Super Bowl, and you
- 21:02Speaker 1: know I remember that play, and then how can we
- 21:05Speaker 1: forget when Aaron Rodgers was on the other side of
- 21:07Speaker 1: the hail Mary or should I call it the fail Mary?
- 21:11Speaker 1: And I know we talked about this in an earlier
- 21:13Speaker 1: episode two twelve, Week three. There's a referee lockout, so
- 21:17Speaker 1: replacement refs are working the game. Russell Wilson hits Golden
- 21:21Speaker 1: Tate for a twenty four yard touchdown. At the end
- 21:25Speaker 1: of regulation. The refs made two different calls. One said touchdown,
- 21:31Speaker 1: the other says time was expired. And listen to the
- 21:36Speaker 1: confusion right here, Mike, the Packers playing at the goal
- 21:39Speaker 1: law as Wilton started to keep it along. The game's
- 21:43Speaker 1: final play is it works and love to the m zode,
- 21:46Speaker 1: which is takes simultaneous who hazard who they're going to
- 21:53Speaker 1: Touchdowy Woy goes out touchdown. Over said, no, time has
- 22:00Speaker 1: to be looked arts. It's a school store assisition. Throw
- 22:04Speaker 1: there all off the pile. We must have a definitive call.
- 22:11Speaker 1: There was one touch that signal add Rogers always seemed
- 22:18Speaker 1: to be in the mix for a hail Mary, one
- 22:21Speaker 1: way or another, so it's only fitting that he can
- 22:22Speaker 1: speak on the strategy of a Hail Mary and an
- 22:25Speaker 1: ESPN article in this is what he said. I've done
- 22:28Speaker 1: all of those in practice, So even the Arizona throw,
- 22:30Speaker 1: the Detroit throw, and this last one, I've done similar
- 22:33Speaker 1: plays where we're moving the pocket slightly or not moving
- 22:37Speaker 1: the pocket, or escaping and resetting the edge, and then
- 22:39Speaker 1: you're throwing it as high as you can and trying
- 22:42Speaker 1: to judge the trajectory and distance and then how hard
- 22:44Speaker 1: you're going to throw it. It's a matter of quick
- 22:47Speaker 1: mathematical equation in your mind based on your field and
- 22:50Speaker 1: your muscle memory, which speaks add to what Kirk Cousins
- 22:53Speaker 1: was saying with the formatics of the throw, and what
- 22:56Speaker 1: it also reminds me of Justin Tucker when you hit
- 22:58Speaker 1: that sixty six yard field goal, that little hop step
- 23:01Speaker 1: to try to get a little extra umph on that kick.
- 23:04Speaker 1: It's sort of the same thing in different position. But
- 23:06Speaker 1: once again, just how some of these athletes are thinking
- 23:09Speaker 1: in real time on the field, right and proving that
- 23:12Speaker 1: playing football is not about just being a meathead. I mean,
- 23:16Speaker 1: they're clearly doing physics on the fly. But you know,
- 23:20Speaker 1: as we give these great quarterbacks all this shine let's
- 23:25Speaker 1: talk about the receivers a little bit. Since two thousand six,
- 23:28Speaker 1: Larry Fitzgerald and A. J. Green have the most targets
- 23:33Speaker 1: on Hail Mary's with five apiece. Now, Fitzgerald was indeed
- 23:36Speaker 1: able to catch one of those, but Green A Cumnick
- 23:40Speaker 1: so I mentioned earlier, and Richard Rodgers, who you also
- 23:43Speaker 1: mentioned earlier, lead the way with to each And since
- 23:47Speaker 1: we talked about Rogers earlier, let's take a listen to
- 23:50Speaker 1: what he had to say after he caught that one
- 23:53Speaker 1: against Detroit Basketball. You have a spot some point five
- 23:58Speaker 1: points in junior year. At what point did you start
- 24:00Speaker 1: to think like a basketball player saying I just got
- 24:03Speaker 1: to go up and get this rebound um in? Then
- 24:06Speaker 1: start really, I'm supposed to be boxing out and DeVante
- 24:09Speaker 1: is supposed to be the jumper. But once I saw
- 24:11Speaker 1: it in the air, I realized I could get it,
- 24:12Speaker 1: so I just went for a d D. It's a
- 24:15Speaker 1: really good point, and I love that Rogers is saying
- 24:17Speaker 1: it because kind of boxes out, leaps up and he's
- 24:19Speaker 1: got that basketball background. But without those guys catching the ball,
- 24:23Speaker 1: you don't even have this episode of NFL explained. I
- 24:25Speaker 1: think the one thing that I learned today is Aaron
- 24:27Speaker 1: Rodgers might be the best at the hail mary throw.
- 24:30Speaker 1: We didn't even mention his hail mary in the divisional
- 24:34Speaker 1: game against the Cardinals. I don't know, is there a
- 24:36Speaker 1: guy that you want to throw the ball to up
- 24:38Speaker 1: in the air, last second, crucial moment in a game.
- 24:42Speaker 1: M that's asking me right now, who's got the best hands?
- 24:45Speaker 1: You know what, I don't even know if it's about
- 24:47Speaker 1: the best chance, since we're talking about the whole mathematical
- 24:49Speaker 1: piece of it. I feel like Cooper Cup is always
- 24:52Speaker 1: in the right place at the right time. I mean,
- 24:54Speaker 1: this is a guy that I repeatedly watched just a
- 24:56Speaker 1: couple of weeks ago beat double teams. Jamar Chase is fearless.
- 25:01Speaker 1: He's another guy I would absolutely totally throw two. Um
- 25:06Speaker 1: who else? And then again, I'll go back to I
- 25:09Speaker 1: mentioned Kim Nicks and being there when he caught one,
- 25:12Speaker 1: just being able to, like Roger said, box somebody out
- 25:15Speaker 1: and have bigger hands than anybody. That is a tough one.
- 25:19Speaker 1: You're putting me on the spot and not even giving
- 25:21Speaker 1: me a chance to really actively think about that. Yeah,
- 25:23Speaker 1: I like it. You know you look you you like
- 25:25Speaker 1: the quizzes on the show. I thought I could throw
- 25:27Speaker 1: one your way, all right, So let me give you
- 25:29Speaker 1: one more. Let me give you one more. You know
- 25:31Speaker 1: there is one more Aaron Rodgers hail Mary, and it's
- 25:33Speaker 1: one that you forgot of. CoRIS is the two thousand
- 25:36Speaker 1: seventeen Wild Card game when he threw a Hail Mary
- 25:39Speaker 1: against the Giants at the end of the first half.
- 25:42Speaker 1: And uh, I know you still bleed blue. Sometimes it's hard,
- 25:46Speaker 1: so I apologize, but I think we should toss this
- 25:49Speaker 1: one out the door on our way out, and everybody
- 25:52Speaker 1: else as you listen to this call and as Mike
- 25:54Speaker 1: wipes the way the tears listening to those calls, thank
- 25:57Speaker 1: you as always for joining us for a stuff. Rogers
- 26:03Speaker 1: does this predator water and that's inexplicable as to how
- 26:13Speaker 1: you allow any offensive players in front of you in
- 26:17Speaker 1: a hell marry type situation. That was NFL explained Bill married.
