- 0:00Speaker 1: The book of Acts and stand for the last time
- 0:02Speaker 1: you don't have to stand no more you can duck
- 0:05Speaker 1: walk out of here if you need to just so
- 0:08Speaker 1: you stay seated but Acts chapter 3 verse 1 through
- 0:12Speaker 1: 10 now Peter and John now Peter and John not
- 0:22Speaker 1: Peter or John Peter and John Went up together into
- 0:31Speaker 1: the temple. At the hour of prayer. Being the ninth hour.
- 0:37Speaker 1: And a certain man laying from his mother's womb. From
- 0:40Speaker 1: his mother's womb. Was carrying. Whom they laid daily at
- 0:45Speaker 1: the gate of the temple. Which is called beautiful. To
- 0:49Speaker 1: ask alms of them that entered into the temple. Who
- 0:53Speaker 1: seeing Peter and John about to go into the temple.
- 0:55Speaker 1: Say hey give me some money. And Peter fastening his
- 1:00Speaker 1: eyes upon him, John said, look on us. And he
- 1:04Speaker 1: gave heed unto them, expecting to receive something, expecting, expecting
- 1:09Speaker 1: to receive something of them. Then Peter said, silver and
- 1:14Speaker 1: gold have I none, but such as I have.
- 1:19Speaker 2: Give I thee.
- 1:21Speaker 1: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up
- 1:26Speaker 1: and walk. And he took him by the right hand
- 1:30Speaker 1: and lifted him up. And immediately his feet and ankle
- 1:35Speaker 1: bones received strength. And he leaping up stood and walked
- 1:42Speaker 1: and entered with them into the temple. Walking, leaping and
- 1:46Speaker 1: praising God. And all the people saw him walking and
- 1:51Speaker 1: praising God. And they knew that it was he which
- 1:55Speaker 1: sat for alms at the beautiful gate of the temple.
- 1:59Speaker 1: And they were filled with wonder and amazement. Oh, they
- 2:03Speaker 1: just sung that last week about amazement. God's going to
- 2:07Speaker 1: amaze you. And that which had happened unto him. Can
- 2:12Speaker 1: you say amen? I was fascinated because a man expected
- 2:16Speaker 1: to receive something. But what he got was not what
- 2:20Speaker 1: he expected. And the Holy Spirit said to me to
- 2:24Speaker 1: preach the unexpected. The unexpected. I don't know who this
- 2:30Speaker 1: is for. I don't know what this is about. But
- 2:32Speaker 1: God said he's going to do the unexpected. It is
- 2:37Speaker 1: not going to be normal. It's not going to be ordinary.
- 2:40Speaker 1: It's not going to be routine. God's going to do
- 2:43Speaker 1: the unexpected. Maybe you're watching online and you just count
- 2:48Speaker 1: another Sunday because it's Sunday. But God said he's going
- 2:50Speaker 1: to do the unexpected. Exceedingly abundantly above all you may
- 2:56Speaker 1: ask or think. That mind blowing move of God. That
- 3:02Speaker 1: disorienting move of God. The kind of move of God
- 3:05Speaker 1: that makes you have to change your plans to accommodate it.
- 3:08Speaker 1: Because God's going to do the unexpected. That out of
- 3:12Speaker 1: the box kind of God. That rule breaking God. That
- 3:18Speaker 1: yoke breaking God. That door opening God. Get ready for
- 3:22Speaker 1: the unexpected. Do you hear what I'm talking to you about?
- 3:27Speaker 1: Spirit of the living God, pour pressure on us now
- 3:29Speaker 1: as we open up the word of God.
- 3:32Speaker 2: We are so grateful to you that you would speak
- 3:34Speaker 2: to us at all.
- 3:36Speaker 1: Let the word speak in such a profound and didactic
- 3:40Speaker 1: way that we are altered and changed and even disrupted
- 3:44Speaker 1: by what you preach. Minister not just to me but
- 3:48Speaker 1: through me. Flow through me that I might deliver to
- 3:52Speaker 1: your people that which you would have imparted unto them.
- 3:56Speaker 1: I thank you in advance for what you're about to do.
- 3:59Speaker 1: I believe you for amazing things have your way, great
- 4:02Speaker 1: God that you are. I believe you for it in
- 4:05Speaker 1: Jesus' name. Amen.
- 4:09Speaker 2: You may be seated. Yeah.
- 4:14Speaker 1: Time to go to work. I must confess to you
- 4:18Speaker 1: that these are troubling times. I don't care how much
- 4:24Speaker 1: faith you have and how much you pray. These are
- 4:30Speaker 1: troubling times. You don't know from one moment to the
- 4:34Speaker 1: other what's going to happen next. You can't count on people.
- 4:39Speaker 1: They'll say something and then do something completely different. And
- 4:44Speaker 1: then say they didn't say what you heard them say. Amen.
- 4:50Speaker 1: You got the tape of them saying it and they'll
- 4:52Speaker 1: still act like you're crazy and say, I didn't say that.
- 4:56Speaker 1: They'll say that you didn't see what you saw even
- 5:00Speaker 1: though you saw it. And say it so long if
- 5:02Speaker 1: you're not careful it'll make you wonder, did you see
- 5:05Speaker 1: what you saw when you saw it? Because I have
- 5:08Speaker 1: never seen so many people be absolute in being absolutely wrong.
- 5:15Speaker 1: It used to be that we had some absolutes. Some
- 5:19Speaker 1: truth that we could build around. Some areas that we
- 5:23Speaker 1: would not touch in order to gain momentum. Some areas
- 5:27Speaker 1: were sacred and untouchable. But now anything goes to get ahead.
- 5:34Speaker 1: These are troubling times. Because we have hurricanes where we
- 5:39Speaker 1: used to have sunshine. Tsunamis where we used to have beaches.
- 5:45Speaker 1: These are troubling times because we have ice where we
- 5:49Speaker 1: used to have heat. And heat where we used to
- 5:52Speaker 1: have ice. These are troubling times because the world we're
- 5:56Speaker 1: living in is so unpredictable that we had to leave
- 6:00Speaker 1: our water running last night and tomorrow it's going to
- 6:02Speaker 1: be hot. I don't know what to wear. I feel
- 6:08Speaker 1: like wearing a fur coat with shorts.
- 6:10Speaker 2: Yes.
- 6:15Speaker 1: I'm just totally confused because I don't know what's going
- 6:18Speaker 1: to happen next.
- 6:20Speaker 2: All of the absolutes are being changed.
- 6:23Speaker 1: And even though we are citizens in our own country,
- 6:26Speaker 1: sometimes we feel like subordinates. Sometimes we feel second class.
- 6:33Speaker 1: Sometimes we feel mistreated. Sometimes we feel unheard. It's not
- 6:39Speaker 1: just a matter of race, but also status. Status. It
- 6:44Speaker 1: seems like if you have enough status, you can get
- 6:48Speaker 1: by with doing anything. You can be guilty and not
- 6:53Speaker 1: go to jail if you got enough status. You can
- 6:56Speaker 1: be innocent and go to jail if you don't. And
- 7:00Speaker 1: these are troubling times. I don't know what to teach
- 7:02Speaker 1: our children to expect.
- 7:05Speaker 2: Because I am unsure.
- 7:08Speaker 1: And if I act like they didn't bother me at all,
- 7:10Speaker 1: I'd be lying to you. I want to confess to you.
- 7:13Speaker 1: I have faith. I believe God. I talk to God.
- 7:15Speaker 1: But sometimes I'm troubled. Sometimes when I lay down, I'm troubled.
- 7:21Speaker 1: Sometimes when I get up in the morning, I'm troubled.
- 7:25Speaker 1: I would be a lot more troubled if it were
- 7:27Speaker 1: not for the word of God. I confess to you
- 7:34Speaker 1: that I used to come to church just to come
- 7:36Speaker 1: to church. But now the word of God is often
- 7:39Speaker 1: my therapy. It's my therapy. It's my detox zone. It's
- 7:46Speaker 1: where I get my head together. It's where I chill out.
- 7:49Speaker 1: It's where I'm reminded that the world has been crazy before.
- 7:55Speaker 1: It's where I'm reminded that the prophets of old worked
- 7:59Speaker 1: against adverse conditions and circumstances and still called fire down
- 8:04Speaker 1: from heaven. Still called water out of a rock. Still
- 8:09Speaker 1: entered into a city and turned the city upside down.
- 8:13Speaker 1: It's important to me to read that. And the more
- 8:15Speaker 1: I go into the word of God, it is more
- 8:17Speaker 1: than reading Bible stories. I become more fascinated about the
- 8:22Speaker 1: circumstance in which the story occurred. In the text today,
- 8:27Speaker 1: the circumstance that surrounds the story is as powerful as
- 8:31Speaker 1: the story itself. This generation of Jews have lost power
- 8:40Speaker 1: in their own country.
- 8:42Speaker 2: They're on their land, but they are not fully.
- 8:46Speaker 1: Deputized and empowered to be able to function in their environment.
- 8:51Speaker 1: They are oppressed by Rome. Oppressed to a degree, not
- 8:55Speaker 1: totally oppressed. Not like their forefathers who were oppressed in Babylon.
- 9:03Speaker 1: They're oppressed at home. Now it's one thing to be
- 9:06Speaker 1: oppressed in a strange country. And it's another thing to
- 9:10Speaker 1: be oppressed in.
- 9:10Speaker 2: Your own house.
- 9:13Speaker 1: To be on your own turf in a familiar environment
- 9:16Speaker 1: and not be empowered in your own situation.
- 9:19Speaker 2: Such were the times.
- 9:21Speaker 1: That they had to come to the Roman government and say, Mother,
- 9:25Speaker 1: may I, before they did anything because they were not
- 9:28Speaker 1: in control in the same territory that they owned. They
- 9:34Speaker 1: were a colony of Rome. And this colonization, this notion
- 9:41Speaker 1: of colonization had caused them to be kind.
- 9:45Speaker 2: Of patted on the head.
- 9:47Speaker 1: Rome said, we're going to control all the money, but
- 9:50Speaker 1: you can still have church. It's almost as if church became,
- 9:57Speaker 1: worship became a pacifier. while Rome took control. And it
- 10:04Speaker 1: had been that way such a long time that you
- 10:07Speaker 1: couldn't tell where the government ended and the church began.
- 10:13Speaker 1: Sounds a lot like today. In fact, they called it
- 10:17Speaker 1: Herod's Temple at one point When did Herod get to
- 10:23Speaker 1: have a temple? And now Herod is making money.
- 10:28Speaker 2: Off the temple. The reason Jesus turned.
- 10:33Speaker 1: Over the tables wasn't because they were selling cakes in
- 10:36Speaker 1: the back of the church. The reason that Jesus turned
- 10:40Speaker 1: over the tables is because Herod had brought his hand
- 10:44Speaker 1: into God's house and was making money off of people
- 10:48Speaker 1: who just wanted to worship him. It was nothing wrong
- 10:52Speaker 1: to bring an offering, but Herod was taxing them on
- 10:56Speaker 1: their giving. And when Jesus saw what government had done.
- 11:00Speaker 2: To church, he turned the tables upside down. I don't know,
- 11:03Speaker 2: I don't know, I don't know.
- 11:04Speaker 1: But I think today, if he were to come in
- 11:07Speaker 1: and see what's going on in the church world today,
- 11:10Speaker 1: that it'd be some tables flipped over in the floor.
- 11:15Speaker 1: Because we have confused the gospel with our perspectives today.
- 11:21Speaker 1: And now if you don't agree with me, you're going
- 11:23Speaker 1: to hell. And you don't even need a Bible verse
- 11:26Speaker 1: to send me. All you need is an opinion. Colonization
- 11:34Speaker 1: can be a damnable thing. That's why our country was
- 11:37Speaker 1: founded resisting it. It started out not to be states,
- 11:41Speaker 1: not to be its own government. It started out to
- 11:43Speaker 1: be 13 colonies. Who rose up and protested against Great
- 11:49Speaker 1: Britain and said we refuse to be an outpost of
- 11:54Speaker 1: another country's government. And fighting and fighting and fighting back
- 11:58Speaker 1: until finally in 1776 they won their independence. We didn't
- 12:04Speaker 1: have ours yet but they had theirs. I'm just telling
- 12:08Speaker 1: it like it is. The Jews at this point wanted
- 12:13Speaker 1: their independence. Independence. Even those who followed Jesus did not
- 12:18Speaker 1: just follow Jesus so he could perform miracles and do
- 12:22Speaker 1: tricks like a magician.
- 12:24Speaker 2: They had an underlying motive.
- 12:26Speaker 1: When will you restore the kingdom really meant when are
- 12:30Speaker 1: you going to give us.
- 12:30Speaker 2: Back control of our own land?
- 12:35Speaker 1: The coming of the Messiah and the calling of him
- 12:37Speaker 1: the king of the Jews gave them hope that they
- 12:41Speaker 1: would stop to be a colony of Rome and that
- 12:44Speaker 1: he was strong enough to fight back. But he didn't.
- 12:51Speaker 1: He died. They beat him half to death. Rome did.
- 12:58Speaker 1: And the Lord of glory died. And how do you
- 13:02Speaker 1: preach a powerful message When the one you're preaching about
- 13:08Speaker 1: got beat to death.
- 13:11Speaker 2: And died.
- 13:14Speaker 1: Thomas said, I'm through with it. And you blame Thomas
- 13:18Speaker 1: and you talk to him about it. But I'm not
- 13:20Speaker 1: too hard on Thomas. Because there are things, there is
- 13:23Speaker 1: a hurt that can hurt so bad that shakes you.
- 13:27Speaker 2: Down to your toes.
- 13:28Speaker 1: And you don't even want to be in anything that
- 13:30Speaker 1: reminds you of that kind of pain again. Maybe you
- 13:33Speaker 1: haven't lived long enough to have that kind of pain.
- 13:36Speaker 1: But there is a pain that becomes so tough that
- 13:39Speaker 1: you don't even want certain.
- 13:41Speaker 2: Pictures in your house.
- 13:43Speaker 1: There is a pain that becomes so tough that you'll
- 13:46Speaker 1: blot the face off of the media. You don't want
- 13:49Speaker 1: them to pop up on Facebook. You don't want them
- 13:51Speaker 1: to come up on Instagram. There is a pain that
- 13:54Speaker 1: becomes so tough that you don't want any sign of
- 13:57Speaker 1: it again. And Thomas said, unless I feel the nail
- 14:00Speaker 1: prints in his hand and where I pierced him in
- 14:02Speaker 1: the side, I will not believe it. And Jesus showed
- 14:07Speaker 1: up because he understood Thomas' disappointment. Judas hung himself. Peter
- 14:14Speaker 1: went to cussing. Everything was coming apart. All hell was
- 14:19Speaker 1: breaking loose. And still he rose. Still he rose. He
- 14:30Speaker 1: had come into his own and his own had received
- 14:33Speaker 1: him not. He had stood on the Mount of Olives
- 14:36Speaker 1: and weeped over Jerusalem and said, Oh, Jerusalem, one of
- 14:40Speaker 1: the few times that Jesus cried, incidentally.
- 14:42Speaker 2: Oh, Jerusalem, Jerusalem, how oft.
- 14:45Speaker 1: Would I have gathered you as a hen does her chicks,
- 14:48Speaker 1: but ye, ye, my brethren, would not.
- 14:55Speaker 2: Would not.
- 14:57Speaker 1: We're getting ready to celebrate the MLK Day, and it's
- 15:00Speaker 1: a wonderful thing. But a lot of people who are
- 15:03Speaker 1: celebrating him in death did not respect him in life.
- 15:12Speaker 1: And I'm not just talking about white folks either. It
- 15:14Speaker 1: was some black folks that didn't accept him in life.
- 15:17Speaker 1: He was controversial in life. It's amazing how after you die,
- 15:21Speaker 1: everybody names stuff after you. Jesus has now died and
- 15:28Speaker 1: rose from the dead, but he only showed himself alive
- 15:33Speaker 1: to believers. And after showing himself alive for 40 days
- 15:39Speaker 1: with many infallible proofs, he stepped on a cloud and
- 15:43Speaker 1: ascended into the heaven and left them looking up at
- 15:46Speaker 1: him as their dreams went up in the air. Ye
- 15:50Speaker 1: men of Galilee, the angels said, why stand ye here
- 15:54Speaker 1: gazing at me? This same Jesus that you see us
- 15:57Speaker 1: in shall descend in like manner.
- 16:00Speaker 2: Go and preach the gospel.
- 16:02Speaker 1: You shall receive power, Acts 1 and 8, after that
- 16:04Speaker 1: the Holy Ghost has come upon you. And you shall
- 16:07Speaker 1: be witnesses, not power to dance. Not power to beat
- 16:11Speaker 1: the tambourine. Not power to start your own choir. Not
- 16:15Speaker 1: power to make a name for your ministry. You shall
- 16:18Speaker 1: be witnesses unto me.
- 16:22Speaker 2: Witnesses.
- 16:23Speaker 1: You don't need a witness unless you're on trial. You
- 16:26Speaker 1: shall be witnesses unto me. I'm gone and I'm still
- 16:29Speaker 1: on trial. I'm going to be controversial even after I'm gone.
- 16:34Speaker 1: You shall be witnesses unto me. In Jerusalem And Judea
- 16:42Speaker 1: and Samaria and the uttermost parts of the earth. You
- 16:46Speaker 1: shall be witnesses unto me. And so what we see
- 16:50Speaker 1: here is Peter and John coming up in a last
- 16:55Speaker 1: ditch attempt to give Jerusalem a final chance to recognize
- 17:00Speaker 1: Jesus as Messiah.
- 17:03Speaker 2: Jesus was through with it.
- 17:05Speaker 1: He said not one stone will be left standing upon another.
- 17:09Speaker 2: I'm done with you. I'm out of here.
- 17:12Speaker 1: Peter and John are coming to the synagogue at the
- 17:16Speaker 1: hour of prayer. Peter and John is not just anybody.
- 17:20Speaker 1: They are part of Jesus' inner circle. There are a
- 17:24Speaker 1: few things that Jesus did that Peter and John and
- 17:27Speaker 1: James were not at. They were there at the Mount
- 17:31Speaker 1: of Transfigurations. They were there in the garden of Gethsemane.
- 17:36Speaker 1: They were Jesus' inner circle. Sometimes you can't take everybody
- 17:41Speaker 1: with you. Oh, that's worth writing down right there. Sometimes
- 17:45Speaker 1: you can't take everybody with you. When you know who
- 17:49Speaker 1: you are, you have to have an inner circle that
- 17:53Speaker 1: kind of insulates you from outside influences. Peter and John
- 17:59Speaker 1: were the cream of the crop. These are not just anybody.
- 18:05Speaker 1: This is not Bartholomew or somebody. This is not Matthew
- 18:09Speaker 1: or somebody. This is Jesus' choice servant coming to the
- 18:15Speaker 1: synagogue at our prayer. Now, they are not coming to
- 18:19Speaker 1: the synagogue because they agree with the synagogues. The synagogue
- 18:24Speaker 1: has rejected Jesus. They are apostles of Jesus. So it
- 18:29Speaker 1: is the clashing of kingdoms that they would have the
- 18:33Speaker 1: audacity to come to the synagogue to preach what the
- 18:37Speaker 1: synagogue thought was a cult. So they did not expect
- 18:44Speaker 1: a warm welcome. They did not expect that. And the
- 18:51Speaker 1: synagogue did not necessarily expect that they would have the
- 18:55Speaker 1: audacious attitude to be able to walk up into their
- 18:59Speaker 1: assembly to preach something contrary to what they believed. And
- 19:06Speaker 1: they did not expect to run into the lame man
- 19:09Speaker 1: at the gate. And the lame man who had been
- 19:13Speaker 1: laid daily at the gate did not expect to run
- 19:17Speaker 1: into them. So everything that happens in this story is.
- 19:26Speaker 2: Unexpected.
- 19:30Speaker 1: If you would have told the synagogue that Peter and
- 19:33Speaker 1: John were coming, they would be shocked. They were not
- 19:35Speaker 1: looking for them. If you would have told Peter and
- 19:39Speaker 1: John that they would stop outside at the gate called
- 19:42Speaker 1: beautiful and expend their anointing on a no-name beggar who
- 19:48Speaker 1: had been laid daily. at the gate from his mother's womb.
- 19:53Speaker 1: They did not expect it. There was no appointment on
- 19:57Speaker 1: their date book for this to happen. Oh, y'all don't
- 20:00Speaker 1: hear what I'm saying. But God in his sovereign ability
- 20:05Speaker 1: to orchestrate the affairs of men sets appointments and don't
- 20:09Speaker 1: necessarily tell you that it's an appointment. You just walk
- 20:13Speaker 1: into it and it happens to you. And once you're
- 20:16Speaker 1: in it, you begin to recognize this.
- 20:18Speaker 2: Is a divine setup.
- 20:21Speaker 1: I didn't know that meeting you was going to change
- 20:24Speaker 1: my life. I didn't know that meeting you would change
- 20:29Speaker 1: the trajectory of how I see myself.
- 20:32Speaker 2: I didn't know that I would have the kind of encounter.
- 20:35Speaker 1: Having met you that would disrupt how I define myself.
- 20:39Speaker 2: But such is the text.
- 20:43Speaker 1: Because the lame man was used to being the lame man.
- 20:49Speaker 2: What do you do.
- 20:52Speaker 1: When you are referred to As a lame man. What
- 20:58Speaker 1: do you do when you are referred to as a
- 21:01Speaker 1: drug addict? What do you do when you are referred
- 21:06Speaker 1: to as a cheater and a whoremonger? What do you
- 21:11Speaker 1: do when what you do becomes bigger than who you are? Oh,
- 21:15Speaker 1: y'all don't hear what I'm saying. Until somebody can name
- 21:19Speaker 1: your weakness and everybody in the room know who they
- 21:22Speaker 1: talking about.
- 21:24Speaker 2: This is the lame man. Everybody knew it.
- 21:28Speaker 1: The people in the temple said, we know that's the
- 21:31Speaker 1: lame man who's begging at the gate. They didn't say
- 21:34Speaker 1: that's Fred Wilson. That's Charlie Johnson. That's Michael Freddie. No,
- 21:40Speaker 1: they didn't call his name. They called his condition because
- 21:44Speaker 1: the condition had defined who he was. Have you ever
- 21:51Speaker 1: had a condition? that defined who you were, that had
- 21:57Speaker 1: swallowed up your name, that everybody referred to you, whether
- 22:02Speaker 1: in your face or behind your back, by what you do,
- 22:08Speaker 1: not who you are.
- 22:11Speaker 2: Such is the case with the lame man. He is
- 22:17Speaker 2: not lame in many ways.
- 22:21Speaker 1: Even though he has spent his whole life begging, his
- 22:26Speaker 1: hands were not broken. He had no problem stretching forth
- 22:31Speaker 1: his hand. There was nothing wrong with his brain. He
- 22:38Speaker 1: was not blind like Bartimaeus. His spine was not twisted.
- 22:44Speaker 1: He was not sick with palsy. He was not paralyzed.
- 22:49Speaker 1: In fact, 90% of his body was functional. It was
- 22:55Speaker 1: just his ankles and feet. Isn't it funny how one thing.
- 23:02Speaker 2: I.
- 23:06Speaker 1: Know y'all don't know what I'm talking about. So sitting
- 23:08Speaker 1: there looking real confused won't nobody know that you got
- 23:11Speaker 1: a thing that affects every other thing in your life.
- 23:16Speaker 1: Whether it's a mouth or a temper or a doubt
- 23:19Speaker 1: or an attitude or a disorder. One thing that you
- 23:24Speaker 1: know about yourself that limits your movement, your activity, your growth,
- 23:29Speaker 1: your opportunity that stops you, that brings you to your knees.
- 23:33Speaker 1: And in spite of everything else, 90% being strong and healthy,
- 23:38Speaker 1: 10% can take you down. One thing being broken in
- 23:48Speaker 1: your life can take you down. That's why it's not
- 23:50Speaker 1: good to turn up your nose and start talking about people.
- 23:53Speaker 1: Because everybody got something that don't work right. Yeah, yeah,
- 23:59Speaker 1: I'm a preacher today. Everybody got something that don't work right.
- 24:03Speaker 1: It might not be obvious. It might be covered. It
- 24:06Speaker 1: might be camouflaged. It might be camouflaged by the accruements
- 24:11Speaker 1: of your success or your accolades or your degrees or
- 24:15Speaker 1: your finances or your beauty until people don't notice that
- 24:19Speaker 1: you're beautiful, but you're just a little bit crazy. That
- 24:27Speaker 1: you can quote all of the Bible but you have
- 24:30Speaker 1: trouble living. Certain parts. It was just his ankles. But
- 24:38Speaker 1: his ankles had shut down everything. He might as well
- 24:42Speaker 1: be paralyzed all over his body. Because this one part
- 24:49Speaker 1: didn't work. I'm wondering if you are honest enough to
- 24:54Speaker 1: admit that something don't work right.
- 24:59Speaker 2: I'm good at speaking in front of people.
- 25:01Speaker 1: But I'm bad at handling money. I'm great at handling money,
- 25:06Speaker 1: but I can't stand to be around people. Everybody has
- 25:12Speaker 1: something in their life that affects everything else because life
- 25:17Speaker 1: keeps asking you to function in the way that you
- 25:21Speaker 1: don't function. What happens when you have to function in
- 25:26Speaker 1: a way that you don't function? You create a way
- 25:32Speaker 1: of coping with what you can't correct. And so what
- 25:39Speaker 1: we see in the first sentences of this text is
- 25:43Speaker 1: this man has set in place a coping mechanism that
- 25:48Speaker 1: is built around his dysfunction. Blind people do it. Moving
- 25:54Speaker 1: furniture around to fit blind people. Handicapped people do it.
- 25:58Speaker 1: Putting bars in the bathroom so that you can move
- 26:01Speaker 1: from the wheelchair and move over to the seat. Everybody
- 26:05Speaker 1: has a way of making adjustments in their life to
- 26:08Speaker 1: accommodate their deficiencies. Little ways of doing things. I knew
- 26:16Speaker 1: when I got married that I could not safely marry
- 26:19Speaker 1: a mouthy woman. So every mouthy woman that dated me,
- 26:26Speaker 1: I said, not her. Not her, because I don't want
- 26:31Speaker 1: to be locked up with Bobo, not her. You got
- 26:36Speaker 1: to know what don't work right in you. I'm not
- 26:39Speaker 1: against mouthy women, it's just not for me. Because that's
- 26:43Speaker 1: a trigger for me. You get up in my face,
- 26:46Speaker 1: shaking your neck. And the district attorney going to have.
- 26:55Speaker 2: To come get me.
- 26:56Speaker 1: I just, you got to know what doesn't work.
- 27:02Speaker 2: For you.
- 27:04Speaker 1: I don't want no dumb woman who can't think and
- 27:07Speaker 1: can't help. I want you to be strong. I want
- 27:09Speaker 1: you to have your opinion. But I don't want you
- 27:12Speaker 1: up in my face breaking glasses and stuff. Because I
- 27:16Speaker 1: might forget.
- 27:20Speaker 2: I'm just telling, I'm.
- 27:20Speaker 1: Confessing my ankles. I'm going to show my ankles today.
- 27:24Speaker 1: I might forget. I might forget.
- 27:27Speaker 2: I'm telling you, don't do that. I might forget. You
- 27:33Speaker 2: can't do that. You don't set.
- 27:37Speaker 1: Yourself in situations that you know are too big for you.
- 27:42Speaker 1: That you know you can't handle. You don't knowingly send
- 27:46Speaker 1: a cookie monster to work at the cookie factory. And
- 27:51Speaker 1: then be shocked because he ate up the cookie. You
- 27:53Speaker 1: knew I was a cookie monster when you hired me.
- 28:00Speaker 1: You don't hire a child molester to work in pediatrics.
- 28:06Speaker 1: When you know that something doesn't work in your life,
- 28:10Speaker 1: you make certain adjustments to accommodate.
- 28:17Speaker 2: Your issues.
- 28:19Speaker 1: So that you can be in an atmosphere where at
- 28:22Speaker 1: least you can survive. This man has never walked. He
- 28:30Speaker 1: is not a person who used to walk. He has
- 28:36Speaker 1: no memory of standing up. He has no mental cognitive
- 28:41Speaker 1: memory of standing up. His muscles have no memory of
- 28:47Speaker 1: standing up. His nerve endings have no memory of standing up.
- 28:52Speaker 1: Whether you know it or not, your body has a memory.
- 28:54Speaker 1: If you work out all the time and you quit
- 28:57Speaker 1: for a while and go back to working out, it
- 28:59Speaker 1: doesn't take long for your body to say, oh, we're
- 29:01Speaker 1: doing that again. And it starts giving you the strength
- 29:03Speaker 1: to do what you used to do.
- 29:05Speaker 2: It has a memory.
- 29:05Speaker 1: His legs have no memory of ever walking. He has
- 29:12Speaker 1: been lame. He came out of his mama's belly with
- 29:16Speaker 1: his ankles full. And so he has devised a system.
- 29:24Speaker 1: And the system has caused him to surround himself, number one,
- 29:30Speaker 1: with enablers.
- 29:35Speaker 2: Enablers are the people who carried him. every day to
- 29:41Speaker 2: the same place.
- 29:46Speaker 1: The enablers were the people that you select in your
- 29:49Speaker 1: life that support you in your crippleness. They make it
- 29:55Speaker 1: convenient for you not to do better. I'm going to
- 30:01Speaker 1: mess with you now enablers are the sugar daddies.
- 30:09Speaker 2: Or mamas.
- 30:13Speaker 1: Of lazy people who could work but enablers are the
- 30:18Speaker 1: people that make it convenient for you not to have
- 30:22Speaker 1: to believe God for better somebody shout better You'll never
- 30:28Speaker 1: get better as long as somebody is carrying you. I
- 30:33Speaker 1: would respect him better if they said he crawled to
- 30:37Speaker 1: the gate. Seeing as his knees worked and his hands worked,
- 30:41Speaker 1: he could have crawled to the gate. But no, he
- 30:44Speaker 1: has this group of people who carry him to the
- 30:48Speaker 1: same place. And in some ways, they are as crippled
- 30:53Speaker 1: as he is. Because there are people that don't want
- 30:57Speaker 1: you to get better because if you got better, they
- 31:00Speaker 1: wouldn't have a job. I'm going to mess with you
- 31:03Speaker 1: a little bit. There are people who make a living
- 31:07Speaker 1: off of your dysfunction and they're counting on you to
- 31:10Speaker 1: be lonely and they're counting on you to be desperate
- 31:13Speaker 1: and they're counting on you to call them at two
- 31:15Speaker 1: o'clock in the morning and they're counting on you to
- 31:18Speaker 1: need them in that way or they lose importance.
- 31:25Speaker 2: He was laid daily, carried.
- 31:27Speaker 1: Ain't nothing wrong, you can't move. He was carried daily
- 31:33Speaker 1: to the same place. You know you got enablers when
- 31:37Speaker 1: they keep taking you.
- 31:41Speaker 2: To the same place.
- 31:43Speaker 1: The names might change to protect the innocent, but they
- 31:49Speaker 1: keep carrying you. To the same, if you own your
- 31:53Speaker 1: third husband and all of them beat you. You got
- 31:58Speaker 1: to stop saying what's wrong with them and look in
- 32:01Speaker 1: the mirror and say, hey. What's wrong with me that
- 32:07Speaker 1: I keep attracting this same type of person and allow
- 32:13Speaker 1: them to. Oh, y'all ain't going to help me preach today.
- 32:18Speaker 1: That's okay. I'm going to get there. I'm going to
- 32:19Speaker 1: get there. Their job was to lay him at the
- 32:24Speaker 1: gate called beautiful. Never anywhere else. They never took him
- 32:30Speaker 1: all of his life. He has been laid in a
- 32:34Speaker 1: conspicuous place where the righteous would walk past him and
- 32:40Speaker 1: feel sorry for him. He is living off of the
- 32:43Speaker 1: benevolence of people who care. He has to be in
- 32:54Speaker 1: close proximity to compassionate people to work them. It is
- 33:04Speaker 1: the same reason homeless people hang out outside of restaurants.
- 33:12Speaker 1: Because they know you just ate a five-star meal and
- 33:15Speaker 1: you come out and run into them. They know you're
- 33:18Speaker 1: more apt to feel guilty. That ain't no mistake. That
- 33:23Speaker 1: ain't no accident. They're not hanging around at the shelter.
- 33:29Speaker 1: They're hanging out at the places where you eat. So
- 33:34Speaker 1: that you can belch and feel bad and reach for
- 33:39Speaker 1: your wallet. And they got to do what they got
- 33:43Speaker 1: to do. But some of us are beggars without caring signs.
- 33:52Speaker 1: And we hang out around certain types of people because
- 33:57Speaker 1: we know they are compassionate enough to carry us. And
- 34:01Speaker 1: we don't have to use what we do have that's
- 34:04Speaker 1: working for us. Because they are so compassionate, we can
- 34:09Speaker 1: just be helpless. I just can't do it. I just
- 34:12Speaker 1: can't get up. I just can't stand up. I just
- 34:16Speaker 1: can't go to school. I just can't take it. I'm
- 34:18Speaker 1: just not that kind of person.
- 34:20Speaker 2: You want to eat?
- 34:27Speaker 1: Certain men laid him daily at the gate called beautiful.
- 34:31Speaker 1: These are the people that you design in your life
- 34:34Speaker 1: to create an ecosystem of dysfunction.
- 34:39Speaker 2: Not one of.
- 34:40Speaker 1: Them on any day challenged him to get up. Everybody
- 34:47Speaker 1: carried him. Nobody pulled him. Nobody took him by the
- 34:54Speaker 1: hand and yanked him and commanded him to walk. Everybody
- 34:58Speaker 1: around him made allowances for his deficiencies. Excuses for, oh mama,
- 35:06Speaker 1: you just don't understand him. He's really a nice guy.
- 35:08Speaker 1: I know he don't work a job, but he's a
- 35:13Speaker 1: wonderful person. We make excuses for the dysfunctions we choose
- 35:19Speaker 1: to keep. Oh, I'm stepping on toes. I can tell
- 35:23Speaker 1: I'm stepping on toes because when I get right in
- 35:25Speaker 1: the middle of your toe, you get quiet. I know
- 35:31Speaker 1: he's 35 and still living with me, but one day
- 35:34Speaker 1: he gonna take off.
- 35:34Speaker 2: And fly like a bird.
- 35:40Speaker 1: He don't buy groceries. He don't pay rent. He don't help.
- 35:50Speaker 2: Are you an enabler? Ooh, got quiet.
- 35:58Speaker 1: I'm gonna ask y'all online. I can't hear you, but
- 36:01Speaker 1: type something on the line.
- 36:02Speaker 2: Are you an enabler? Have you told yourself a story.
- 36:06Speaker 1: To justify somebody's dysfunction, never challenging them to do what
- 36:12Speaker 1: they've never done because they've never done it before? You
- 36:15Speaker 1: cease to expect it. The death of expectation limits productivity.
- 36:24Speaker 1: When I give up on you doing better and I
- 36:27Speaker 1: make adjustments for you and I go ahead and build
- 36:29Speaker 1: you a room and give you a key so you
- 36:32Speaker 1: can come in the basement and feel like you've grown
- 36:34Speaker 1: while I pay the bills, I have set up a
- 36:37Speaker 1: system that does not allow you to evolve. And from
- 36:44Speaker 1: his mother's womb to this present moment, this man has
- 36:48Speaker 1: gone through the same routines. The vicious cycle of needing
- 36:54Speaker 1: somebody to help you. The vicious cycle of using people
- 36:59Speaker 1: as a profession. The vicious cycle of getting over. The
- 37:05Speaker 1: vicious cycle of putting your.
- 37:07Speaker 2: Weight on me.
- 37:08Speaker 1: Hey, excuse me. I already got to carry me. Now
- 37:13Speaker 1: I got to carry me and you. It's not fair
- 37:22Speaker 1: for me to have to carry me and you. And
- 37:29Speaker 1: you don't feel bothered by me carrying you. This is
- 37:33Speaker 1: the way it's supposed to be. And this happens every day.
- 37:37Speaker 1: I don't get a weekend off. I don't get the holidays. Hey,
- 37:41Speaker 1: it's MLK Day Monday. Can I not go Monday? Is
- 37:44Speaker 1: there any day I don't have to carry you? Could
- 37:48Speaker 1: you do something to add value? Could you paint the porch?
- 37:53Speaker 1: Could you take out the trash? Could you clean out
- 37:56Speaker 1: the refrigerator? Could you do something to add value in
- 38:01Speaker 1: my life? Must you always think that I am the
- 38:04Speaker 1: National Bank of Commerce? There are certain people that have
- 38:15Speaker 1: set up a system of dysfunction and some of you
- 38:19Speaker 1: have a loving heart and you keep trying to help
- 38:21Speaker 1: them and you keep believing that they're going to get
- 38:23Speaker 1: better and they are taking advantage of your compassion. And
- 38:28Speaker 1: this is a hard cycle to break. Because the cycle
- 38:32Speaker 1: is a system and the system is a circle. And
- 38:35Speaker 1: every day I pick you up, you know where we're going.
- 38:38Speaker 1: And every day I get you an evening, you know
- 38:40Speaker 1: where we're going. Because we've been in a cycle for
- 38:43Speaker 1: years and neither of us expects it to change. It
- 38:50Speaker 1: is into this environment Peter and John come. But I
- 38:55Speaker 1: believe that the picture of the lame man is a
- 38:58Speaker 1: picture of the synagogues. Because this, can I take my
- 39:05Speaker 1: time with this? The synagogue has been functioning for years
- 39:11Speaker 1: with an outer court and an inner court, but no
- 39:17Speaker 1: glory in the holies of holies. They were just missing
- 39:21Speaker 1: a little bit, but they had learned how to function
- 39:24Speaker 1: without the glory.
- 39:28Speaker 2: And the synagogue was transformed as lame. Oh, y'all don't
- 39:32Speaker 2: want to hear me.
- 39:34Speaker 1: The synagogue was just as lame in its religiosity as
- 39:39Speaker 1: the lame man at the gate called beautiful. So we
- 39:42Speaker 1: got a lame man in front of a lame church.
- 39:50Speaker 1: And he fits into this lameness. Because how can a
- 39:54Speaker 1: lame church say anything about a lame man? Both of
- 40:01Speaker 1: them have something that doesn't work. And into this lame condition,
- 40:09Speaker 1: Peter and John now come. The problem with Peter and
- 40:13Speaker 1: John is that they are not enablers. They are evangelists.
- 40:24Speaker 1: Evangelists are not enablers. Because true evangelists, we don't have
- 40:29Speaker 1: many anymore. Most of you have never seen a true evangelist.
- 40:35Speaker 1: You see speakers who speak multiple days. But a true
- 40:39Speaker 1: evangelist is a disruptor. A true evangelist will turn the
- 40:46Speaker 1: church inside out. A true evangelist is not an evangelist
- 40:50Speaker 1: because they hoop. They're not an evangelist because they raise money.
- 40:54Speaker 1: They're an evangelist because they carry you somewhere you've never
- 40:58Speaker 1: been before... and ask you to do something you've never
- 41:01Speaker 1: done before. And people get healed, and people get delivered,
- 41:05Speaker 1: and people get saved, and people.
- 41:06Speaker 2: Get set free.
- 41:08Speaker 1: And a true evangelist is not like a Sunday morning service...
- 41:11Speaker 1: Hell on a Thursday night. A true evangelist disrupts things,
- 41:16Speaker 1: changes lives. Marriages are reconciled. People are getting breakthroughs. People
- 41:21Speaker 1: are getting delivered. People are getting help. I have to
- 41:24Speaker 1: describe it to you because you can't find it anymore.
- 41:30Speaker 1: You got these gumslingers with Bibles who will work for money.
- 41:35Speaker 1: But a true evangelist will come in and disrupt things.
- 41:42Speaker 1: Peter and John came up to the temple at the
- 41:45Speaker 1: hour of prayer and they run into this man. They
- 41:48Speaker 1: haven't even got in the church. They came to disrupt
- 41:52Speaker 1: the synagogue. But before they could get to the synagogue
- 41:56Speaker 1: to disrupt the synagogue, they now have to disrupt this
- 41:59Speaker 1: man who is a picture of the synagogue. They're just
- 42:05Speaker 1: standing on either side of the gate, lame on this side,
- 42:08Speaker 1: lame on this side. They can't get to the lameness
- 42:11Speaker 1: over here for the lameness over here. Can I go deeper?
- 42:19Speaker 1: I know this is a familiar text, but I'm going
- 42:22Speaker 1: to drain it dry. I'm going to pull on it.
- 42:28Speaker 1: I'm going to yank on it. I'm going to squeeze
- 42:30Speaker 1: it and I'm going to squash it. I'm going to
- 42:33Speaker 1: squeeze it until it fits your situation. I'm going to
- 42:35Speaker 1: squeeze it until God talks to you. I'm going to
- 42:38Speaker 1: squeeze it until the Holy Spirit arrests you. I'm going
- 42:40Speaker 1: to squeeze it until God says to you, you can't
- 42:43Speaker 1: have another year if you're going to keep on having
- 42:46Speaker 1: folk carry you to the same place. In order to
- 42:52Speaker 1: have a new year, you have to have a disruptive
- 42:56Speaker 1: experience that asks you to do something that you have
- 43:00Speaker 1: settled in your mind that you cannot do.
- 43:07Speaker 2: Peter and John come up at the hour of prayer.
- 43:11Speaker 1: And the Bible says that the lame man, here comes
- 43:15Speaker 1: this word, looked on them expecting something. To receive something.
- 43:24Speaker 1: But what he was expecting fit into the cycle of
- 43:29Speaker 1: what he called normal. I want to spend a minute
- 43:32Speaker 1: talking about the enemy of normal. Normal is an enemy.
- 43:40Speaker 1: Every believer should flee from normal. Because if you walk
- 43:44Speaker 1: with God, your life should not be normal. When you
- 43:48Speaker 1: walk with God you should not be ordinary. When you
- 43:51Speaker 1: walk with God you're not supposed to fit in the clique.
- 43:53Speaker 1: When you walk with God you ought not be like
- 43:56Speaker 1: everybody else. When you walk with God every day is
- 43:58Speaker 1: a new day. When you walk with God he does
- 44:01Speaker 1: amazing stuff. When you walk with God he opens doors unexpectedly.
- 44:05Speaker 1: When you walk with God he lets you meet people
- 44:07Speaker 1: you never thought you would meet. When you walk with God...
- 44:10Speaker 1: He puts you in situations that you weren't even qualified.
- 44:14Speaker 1: But God has ordered your steps in such a way
- 44:17Speaker 1: that every day is exciting.
- 44:18Speaker 2: When you walk with God.
- 44:20Speaker 1: There's a spirit of gratitude that comes into your life
- 44:24Speaker 1: because your life is not normal and it is not routine.
- 44:27Speaker 1: When you walk with God, God will always do the unexpected.
- 44:34Speaker 1: Can I go deeper? I have all kind of journalists
- 44:37Speaker 1: that ask me, I want to follow you around a
- 44:40Speaker 1: day so I can see what life is like for T.D.
- 44:43Speaker 1: Jakes in a normal day. I said, you can forget it.
- 44:46Speaker 1: I have never had a normal day. Every day is
- 44:49Speaker 1: different from the other day. I don't have any day
- 44:52Speaker 1: that looks like the day I had before. One day
- 44:55Speaker 1: I'm in Africa. The other day I'm making oxtail. One
- 44:59Speaker 1: day I'm in Washington. The next day I'm in New York.
- 45:02Speaker 1: One day I'm at a business meeting. The next day
- 45:05Speaker 1: I'm laying hands on the devil. One day I'm at
- 45:07Speaker 1: the hospital. One day I'm at the morgue. I don't
- 45:10Speaker 1: have a typical day. Because when you walk with Jesus,
- 45:14Speaker 1: he does the unexpected. I'm wondering if there's anybody in
- 45:18Speaker 1: here who's spiritual enough to have walked in the unexpected.
- 45:23Speaker 1: You can't put me in a box. You can't put
- 45:26Speaker 1: me in a box. You can't give me a title
- 45:28Speaker 1: and tell me.
- 45:29Speaker 2: That's what I am.
- 45:30Speaker 1: You can't expect me to always dress the same, look
- 45:32Speaker 1: the same, and act the same. Because I have an
- 45:35Speaker 1: unexpected God. I'm just like my daddy. One day I'm
- 45:39Speaker 1: in jeans. One day I'm in a suit. One day
- 45:41Speaker 1: I'm in shorts. One day I'm in coveralls.
- 45:44Speaker 2: You can't expect.
- 45:45Speaker 1: Me to fit into your routine, deadbeat, ordinary, lifeless, religious,
- 45:52Speaker 1: philosophical ideology. Because I serve a God who hates religion.
- 45:57Speaker 1: He likes relationship. He does the unexpected. He does the impossible.
- 46:03Speaker 1: He speaks to mountains and tell them to go into
- 46:06Speaker 1: the sea. He comes to his disciples walking on water.
- 46:10Speaker 1: He stops funerals and raises up the dead. He goes
- 46:15Speaker 1: to weddings and turns water into wine. I serve a
- 46:19Speaker 1: God who's able to do exceedingly abundantly above all ye
- 46:24Speaker 1: may ask or think. Have you met my God? Have
- 46:28Speaker 1: you met my God? He sleeps in the middle of
- 46:31Speaker 1: a storm. He casts demons out of leisure. Have you
- 46:35Speaker 1: met my God? He pays taxes out of the fish's mouth.
- 46:40Speaker 1: Have you met my God? He refuses to die on
