Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Let's try this again. Granny, are you high? It's one
- 0:02Speaker 1: more thing. Armstrong and Getty. One more thing.
- 0:07Speaker 2: Before we get to that, a tease for Friday's radio show,
- 0:10Speaker 2: the Armstrong and Getty radio show.
- 0:12Speaker 1: Which will then be the Armstrong and Getty podcast on demand. Wow,
- 0:18Speaker 1: the circle of life. Right, that's what it is. No,
- 0:22Speaker 1: it's the food chain.
- 0:24Speaker 2: So one thing that came up on the radio show
- 0:26Speaker 2: was somebody texting saying, hey, if you want a good laugh,
- 0:29Speaker 2: just say to chat GPT or I mostly use Claude,
- 0:32Speaker 2: roast me. And then it takes all its information it's
- 0:35Speaker 2: got about you and then roast you, which would be funny.
- 0:38Speaker 2: But a friend of mine said to me the other day,
- 0:40Speaker 2: you know what you need to do is say, hey,
- 0:41Speaker 2: what are my character defects or what are my flaws?
- 0:45Speaker 2: And I haven't had the guts to try that because
- 0:47Speaker 2: it knows me really well. Katie tried it. And just
- 0:50Speaker 2: just your headline, because we'll do this tomorrow on the
- 0:52Speaker 2: radio show, Katie. They're not wrong. Color me humbled. Let's
- 1:02Speaker 2: put it that way.
- 1:04Speaker 1: Oh, man.
- 1:04Speaker 2: Just the look on your face is kind of a, yeah,
- 1:08Speaker 2: I didn't, you know, I'm not happy to hear this,
- 1:11Speaker 2: but I get it. Right. Okay, so we'll do that
- 1:16Speaker 2: on the radio show Friday. I'm going to try to
- 1:20Speaker 2: get up the nerve to do it. Because I've talked
- 1:22Speaker 2: to Claude about so many things in so many different
- 1:25Speaker 2: aspects of my life. It's got a pretty good idea
- 1:27Speaker 2: who I am.
- 1:28Speaker 1: Wow. It's got some raw material here. I'm just thinking,
- 1:32Speaker 1: you've got all sorts of self-loathing. Stupid. I mean, how
- 1:41Speaker 1: would it handle that? So I found this interesting. I'm only, well,
- 1:49Speaker 1: I'm partly aware of this. The skyrocketing numbers of baby boomers,
- 1:57Speaker 1: senior citizens who are burning down the weed and how
- 2:02Speaker 1: it's becoming a problem all over the country. Mostly people
- 2:06Speaker 1: actually smoking it. And they have all these examples of this.
- 2:10Speaker 1: Here's a woman who lives in a Miami area high
- 2:14Speaker 1: rise and her neighbors, a married couple in their 70s,
- 2:18Speaker 1: are constantly stinking her out with the pot smoking. And
- 2:23Speaker 1: they told her it's medical marijuana. We only use small amounts.
- 2:27Speaker 1: But she set out to stop the fumes because it
- 2:29Speaker 1: was giving her headaches and making her feel weird and
- 2:31Speaker 1: the rest of it. And she placed multiple calls to
- 2:37Speaker 1: police but said officers were reluctant to knock on the
- 2:40Speaker 1: couple's door late at night. She had intense conversations with
- 2:43Speaker 1: the neighbors that felt straight out of high school. It
- 2:45Speaker 1: was actually kind of always that smirk, she said. Like, oh,
- 2:49Speaker 1: come on. If you're stoned, you're cool. But seniors are
- 2:53Speaker 1: among the fastest-growing demographic for marijuana use in the U.S.,
- 2:57Speaker 1: taking the drug to manage pain, fall asleep, and have fun.
- 3:02Speaker 2: I wonder what percentage of each of those are, since
- 3:06Speaker 2: lots of old people have aches and pains. What does
- 3:09Speaker 2: pot do for pain? I actually don't know. Makes it less?
- 3:13Speaker 1: I guess. Yeah, my... days of pot and days of
- 3:19Speaker 1: pain didn't overlap very well. Right. At least not that
- 3:22Speaker 1: I'm aware of. Okay. As I have not burned the
- 3:26Speaker 1: devil's lettuce in many, many years. So some elderly adults
- 3:33Speaker 1: blame secondhand pot smoke for a host of medical problems
- 3:36Speaker 1: from depression to headaches to breathing issues. And then there
- 3:40Speaker 1: are social pressures too with a number of baby boomers
- 3:42Speaker 1: saying their peers make them feel like narcs and nerds
- 3:45Speaker 1: if they complain. About 10% of respondents to a recent
- 3:51Speaker 1: study of marijuana use by seniors in New York said
- 3:54Speaker 1: they use cannabis to fit in just because everybody's doing it.
- 3:58Speaker 2: That's interesting.
- 4:00Speaker 1: Yeah. Here's a professor.
- 4:02Speaker 2: I'm sure it depends on the senior center you go to.
- 4:04Speaker 2: I got to think the senior center my parents eat
- 4:07Speaker 2: at every day at noon is not quite as heavily
- 4:11Speaker 2: saturated with the pot users as others might be where they.
- 4:14Speaker 1: Are in a Marin County, for instance, or whatever. Yeah.
- 4:17Speaker 1: So here's this professor at this New York medical center
- 4:20Speaker 1: who co-wrote the report. Quote, if Edna is the one
- 4:23Speaker 1: that has the gummies, then it might be like, oh,
- 4:25Speaker 1: I want to be cool like Edna. I don't really
- 4:27Speaker 1: want it, but I'm scared. But she's the cool one,
- 4:29Speaker 1: and I feel like I have to try it now. Oh,
- 4:33Speaker 1: my gosh. To get to your 60s, your 70s, and beyond.
- 4:37Speaker 1: I understand there's social pressures in every environment, and people
- 4:41Speaker 1: want to fit in. We're pack animals. We're herd animals.
- 4:44Speaker 1: But that made me sad.
- 4:48Speaker 2: My parents go to the senior center for lunch every day.
- 4:50Speaker 2: There's one day they don't go. It's Thursday. It's liver
- 4:56Speaker 2: or something like that. There's one day they don't go.
- 4:58Speaker 1: Oh, Lord.
- 5:00Speaker 2: All the other days they go. Sounds like a good
- 5:02Speaker 2: day to skip.
- 5:03Speaker 1: Yeah, exactly. Jeez, I'm fasting that day. Many senior pot
- 5:08Speaker 1: smokers are loud and proud. San Antonio grandmother Sandra Bomar, 63,
- 5:13Speaker 1: who goes by stonergrannyonline, Oh, boy. Now we're getting into
- 5:19Speaker 1: social media, the bringer of all evil and misery. She
- 5:23Speaker 1: posts pot memes on Facebook to her like-minded community. One
- 5:27Speaker 1: recent item features a doctor in a white coat and
- 5:30Speaker 1: the line, in my professional opinion, you should smoke a fatty.
- 5:34Speaker 2: All right.
- 5:38Speaker 1: Boy.
- 5:38Speaker 2: You old hippies. Thanks for bankrupting Social Security.
- 5:42Speaker 1: Yeah, never forget. The cannabis industry is seizing on this shift, Jack,
- 5:47Speaker 1: with targeted brands such as Senior Moments. That's a funny
- 5:52Speaker 1: name for pot for old people. That's pretty good. Yeah,
- 5:54Speaker 1: but it's a drug that gives you short-term memory problems.
- 5:57Speaker 1: I don't care. It's funny. What do you got to remember?
- 6:01Speaker 2: Got to remember they have liver on Thursdays. It's the
- 6:03Speaker 2: only thing I got to remember. It's on the refrigerator.
- 6:05Speaker 1: I'm okay. A Cannabis Media Council campaign shows an elderly
- 6:09Speaker 1: couple in slinky sleepwear grinning next to the words, Can
- 6:13Speaker 1: cannabis help a senior in the sack?
- 6:15Speaker 2: Good news, Tiger. What does pot do for sex? I've
- 6:19Speaker 2: never had that experience either.
- 6:21Speaker 1: Outside of Woody Allen, right? Didn't Diane Keaton in, what
- 6:27Speaker 1: was the famous movie?
- 6:28Speaker 2: Annie Hall?
- 6:29Speaker 1: Annie Hall. Yeah, she wants to smoke pot before they
- 6:33Speaker 1: have sex, and Woody won't do it. I remember that
- 6:36Speaker 1: scene from back in yesteryear. Wow, wow, pot and sex.
- 6:42Speaker 2: Katie, do you know?
- 6:44Speaker 1: I don't.
- 6:45Speaker 2: I've been with.
- 6:46Speaker 1: A non-pot smoker for so long, I could not speak
- 6:50Speaker 1: with authority on that topic either. Okay. What good am I?
- 6:54Speaker 2: Makes you really want that sandwich afterwards.
- 6:57Speaker 1: Yeah, no kidding. No kidding. You want a French kiss
- 7:03Speaker 1: because you need the moisture in your mouth.
- 7:06Speaker 2: Wow.
- 7:08Speaker 1: I think some people say it heightens their sentence. Their sentences.
- 7:11Speaker 2: Some people say, Michael, that's an interesting phrase.
- 7:14Speaker 1: I didn't heighten that sentence. Hey-o! Senses is what I'm
- 7:17Speaker 1: trying to say.
- 7:18Speaker 2: That's an interesting phrase also for you to join in
- 7:20Speaker 2: the conversation. You know, some people who've had the experience
- 7:23Speaker 2: having sex high say, hmm, I'm a suspicious.
- 7:26Speaker 1: He's stoned right now.
- 7:28Speaker 2: Asking for a friend. Exactly. Exactly.
- 7:32Speaker 1: The brand Miss Grass found a star Anita Freeman, a
- 7:36Speaker 1: San Diego octogenarian with five great-grandchildren. In an ad for
- 7:40Speaker 1: the company, she's lying on a lawn in a bright,
- 7:43Speaker 1: candy-bright outfit when a grandchild calls and asks about her day. Oh,
- 7:48Speaker 1: today was marvelous, she says. Then she laughs as she
- 7:52Speaker 1: eats a gummy and floats into the sky.
- 7:55Speaker 2: I don't want to get on the phone with my
- 7:56Speaker 2: mom and she gets off on some esoteric weird, but
- 8:00Speaker 2: what if spaceships could travel? It's like, mom, I got
- 8:03Speaker 2: to go. I got to, you know, we're on the
- 8:05Speaker 2: phone for 45 minutes. It's Thursday. I got to get
- 8:08Speaker 2: some liver. Got to go down to the senior center,
- 8:12Speaker 2: get a plate of liver.
- 8:16Speaker 1: In real life, Ms. Freeman eats half an edible to
- 8:19Speaker 1: relax every now and then. You can get any dose
- 8:23Speaker 1: you want. Anyway. then it's down from smoking a bowl
- 8:27Speaker 1: a day many times in her 70s. It's not so
- 8:30Speaker 1: much fun anymore because it's legal, she said.
- 8:33Speaker 2: Okay, so the fun part was the fact that it
- 8:35Speaker 2: was illegal? You're a weirdo.
- 8:37Speaker 1: I swear to God, I don't get anybody quoted in
- 8:40Speaker 1: this article. Cannabis critics are trapped in a haze of frustration.
- 8:47Speaker 1: Everyone sides with the marijuana smokers, says Penelope Livingston, 50. Actually,
- 8:52Speaker 1: if she talks like that at age 50, that's odd.
- 8:54Speaker 2: Probably doesn't sound like that much.
- 8:57Speaker 1: Right, right, right. Let's see. People getting sick from the smoke.
- 9:03Speaker 1: And then she calls the cops, and the cops talk
- 9:05Speaker 1: to me like I'm the nuisance.
- 9:07Speaker 2: Really?
- 9:08Speaker 1: Really. Now, many say their concerns are drowned out by
- 9:13Speaker 1: advocates for senior use of marijuana, including some doctors. The
- 9:15Speaker 1: medical establishment is split on the safety of cannabis for
- 9:18Speaker 1: older Americans. While some cite the benefits for chronic pain
- 9:21Speaker 1: and other conditions, so evidently it does help with the pain,
- 9:24Speaker 1: studies have found significant increases in cannabis-related emergency room visits
- 9:28Speaker 1: among seniors. Now, I need a little... You need to
- 9:34Speaker 1: let me know how many are... You got crazy, crazy high...
- 9:39Speaker 1: And you're freaking out because that's a lot of emergency
- 9:42Speaker 1: room visits among pot smokers, particularly the potent new marijuana.
- 9:49Speaker 1: And what was like purely medical? I don't know.
- 9:57Speaker 2: Okay before we get to the end of this and
- 10:01Speaker 2: tease tomorrow's show I'm gonna do it I'm gonna I'm
- 10:03Speaker 2: gonna ask the question I'm just gonna like barely glance
- 10:06Speaker 2: at it I'm gonna ask Claude I'm on Claude right
- 10:09Speaker 2: now so here we go I'm gonna voice text this
- 10:15Speaker 2: I've got a question for you about my personality First
- 10:18Speaker 2: of all, I don't want you to do that thing
- 10:22Speaker 2: where you confirm my biases or tell me I'm great.
- 10:28Speaker 2: I want you to be perfectly honest here. After all
- 10:31Speaker 2: our conversations. How should I phrase the next.
- 10:40Speaker 1: Part?
- 10:40Speaker 2: What are my bad habits or what are my character flaws?
- 10:44Speaker 2: What do you think would be the best way?
- 10:45Speaker 1: It's tough to improve on that.
- 10:48Speaker 2: What are my flaws?
- 10:51Speaker 1: Okay.
- 10:52Speaker 2: I'm not going to read a lot of this right now.
- 10:54Speaker 2: I'll save it for tomorrow.
- 10:55Speaker 1: Why is your phone smoking? Okay. Speaking of smoking, one
- 11:02Speaker 1: final note. Cannabis brand Life is Chill is seizing on
- 11:07Speaker 1: the senior market. It's Modern Elder Expo in Phoenix last year.
- 11:11Speaker 1: I wonder if my dad went to that. Included a
- 11:15Speaker 1: workshop where seniors practiced rolling joints with catnip. The joint
- 11:19Speaker 1: was then shared with cats from an animal rescue at
- 11:22Speaker 1: a companion event. Oh, that's so wholesome and perverse.
- 11:27Speaker 2: Yeah. The image is still stuck in my head of
- 11:31Speaker 2: Jack asking Claude that question and his phone just exploding.
- 11:37Speaker 1: He asked too many stupid questions. That would be my response.
- 11:40Speaker 1: I mean, I just, I got to stay in practice.
- 11:44Speaker 2: I don't like number three.
- 11:46Speaker 1: J-K-L-O-L. Here's a list.
- 11:48Speaker 2: I knew number four.
- 11:50Speaker 1: That's fine.
- 11:50Speaker 2: I don't mind.
- 11:51Speaker 1: Number four will shock me.
- 11:53Speaker 2: Okay, five is hurtful.
- 11:55Speaker 1: Oh, no. Oh, boy.
- 11:58Speaker 2: You should have seen the mood swing in here, folks.
- 11:59Speaker 1: It's just... I'm in pain for you. I don't want this.
- 12:04Speaker 2: I like number one, though. You can become intensely fixated.
- 12:07Speaker 2: Of course, that's a little weird. I'm coming to you
- 12:12Speaker 2: with a specific issue. It doesn't mean I'm that way
- 12:15Speaker 2: all the time. I only go to the chat bot
- 12:17Speaker 2: when I'm Fixated on something.
- 12:20Speaker 1: You weren't with me when I stopped and watched two
- 12:22Speaker 1: innings of a high school baseball game. Right. Okay? I'm
- 12:26Speaker 1: not fixated.
- 12:27Speaker 2: Right.
- 12:28Speaker 1: Unfair. Yeah, let's talk about your flaws now, Claude. Huh?
- 12:32Speaker 1: What's good for the goose?
- 12:35Speaker 2: Okay, we'll get to that tomorrow, Friday, on the Armstrong
- 12:37Speaker 2: and Getty Show.
- 12:39Speaker 1: My grandma, she smoked pot and her needlework was talking
- 12:42Speaker 1: to her. She ate a whole bag of hard candy. Wow. Well,
- 12:48Speaker 1: I guess that's it.
