- 0:09SPEAKER_00: Hey my friend, welcome to this episode of The Daily Writer.
- 0:12SPEAKER_00: Today's the fifth entry in our mini-series on dealing with rejection.
- 0:17SPEAKER_00: If you've ever seen the 2009 movie Star Trek, which of course was a reboot of the classic TV show from the 1960s, you might remember the scene where Spock gets into a fight with Kirk, and then Spock steps down from his command.
- 0:31SPEAKER_00: And the reason was that he, in his words, was emotionally compromised.
- 0:35SPEAKER_00: And Spock knew that if he couldn't control his emotions, it would prevent him from making good decisions as a commander.
- 0:42SPEAKER_00: The truth is that we all feel rejected sometimes.
- 0:45SPEAKER_00: It's not just something that happens in a movie or on a TV series.
- 0:49SPEAKER_00: Rejection can come in a lot of different forms.
- 0:52SPEAKER_00: It might come in the form of not getting the results you wanted from a project or a book launch.
- 0:56SPEAKER_00: It might come in the form of not getting chosen for a writing job or some kind of position.
- 1:02SPEAKER_00: Or it could come in the form of just having a bad day and sort of feeling like the whole world is against you.
- 1:07SPEAKER_00: I mean, we've all been there, haven't we?
- 1:09SPEAKER_00: Whatever the source of the pain that you're feeling, remember to stop and assess.
- 1:13SPEAKER_00: Take a moment to check in with yourself.
- 1:15SPEAKER_00: Whenever you're in pain, the easiest thing to do is to seek comfort and validation from other places.
- 1:21SPEAKER_00: You might be tempted to turn to substance abuse like drugs, alcohol, or food to numb the pain of feeling rejected.
- 1:29SPEAKER_00: Or you might do something like turn to an inappropriate relationship with another person who makes you feel good.
- 1:34SPEAKER_00: You might even try to make yourself feel better by accepting work or accepting an opportunity that's not right for you, and you know it's not right, but you do it just so you can feel better.
- 1:44SPEAKER_00: And none of those actions are good, are they?
- 1:46SPEAKER_00: They're all horrible choices.
- 1:48SPEAKER_00: You can't make good decisions when you're emotionally compromised.
- 1:52SPEAKER_00: So when you're feeling bad and frustrated and rejected, make sure you're getting enough rest.
- 1:56SPEAKER_00: Make sure to take care of yourself.
- 1:58SPEAKER_00: Check in with yourself and assess how you're doing.
- 2:01SPEAKER_00: Assess where your emotions are.
- 2:02SPEAKER_00: Do some journaling.
- 2:03SPEAKER_00: Talk to a good friend.
- 2:04SPEAKER_00: Do whatever you need to do to get back to a place where you're feeling good about yourself.
- 2:09SPEAKER_00: Most of all, don't do anything self-destructive and don't make any rash decisions.
- 2:14SPEAKER_00: The worst thing you can possibly do is to feel bad and feel rejected and feel really depressed and then make some kind of major life decision.
- 2:22SPEAKER_00: A lot of bad decisions happen whenever people are feeling bad about themselves.
- 2:26SPEAKER_00: You know, honestly, we're all prone to doing stupid and self-destructive things whenever we feel rejected.
- 2:31SPEAKER_00: But don't make it worse by dragging yourself down even further.
- 2:36SPEAKER_00: Here's today's question What is one specific action you can take to avoid self destructive behaviors the next time you're feeling rejected?
- 2:44SPEAKER_00: And be as specific as you can.
- 2:46SPEAKER_00: Thanks so much for listening to today's episode.
