- 0:00Speaker 1: You ever notice how the thoughts that stick with you
- 0:03Speaker 1: the longest don't actually always come from the big moments.
- 0:06Speaker 1: They don't come from milestones, they don't come from speeches,
- 0:10Speaker 1: they don't always come from deep conversations that you planned.
- 0:15Speaker 1: They come from a random Tuesday. I'm driving the other day,
- 0:18Speaker 1: not going anywhere special, I'm just driving and the weather
- 0:22Speaker 1: is absolutely terrible, almost disrespectful. Snow, it's coming sideways, the wind,
- 0:30Speaker 1: it's howling, roads half plowed, half well, you know, just
- 0:35Speaker 1: that North Country highway where you.
- 0:38Speaker 2: Just stay where the tire tracks are. You get off
- 0:40Speaker 2: either way, it gets a little bit sketchy.
- 0:42Speaker 1: It's that kind of weather that you're just white knuckling
- 0:45Speaker 1: the steering wheel way way too tight and promising yourself
- 0:50Speaker 1: you'll complain about it later. Sometimes you forget to breathe
- 0:55Speaker 1: and you're just hoping that you get to your destination,
- 1:00Speaker 1: and then you're almost instantly regretting and just have that
- 1:03Speaker 1: feeling in your stomach knowing that you get to do
- 1:06Speaker 1: it all over again, but just the oppositive way, and
- 1:09Speaker 1: you're hoping that all of the hard work and down
- 1:11Speaker 1: people are able to get out, stay safe and get
- 1:14Speaker 1: those roads clear for not only you.
- 1:17Speaker 2: Know, selfishly yourself, but.
- 1:19Speaker 1: Everybody else that has to travel the roads. And then
- 1:21Speaker 1: you're like, should I take the back way? Nope, I'm
- 1:24Speaker 1: going to take the main way. And then through all
- 1:28Speaker 1: of this you're driving, and then there they are the Amish.
- 1:33Speaker 1: Why are they Well, they're out, they're traveling, and they're
- 1:37Speaker 1: moving with a purpose. They're not rushing, they're not panicking,
- 1:40Speaker 1: they're just going and listen. This This isn't judgment. This
- 1:46Speaker 1: is genuine curiosity mixed with a little fear, because it's always,
- 1:51Speaker 1: it seems like you see them in the worst weather,
- 1:54Speaker 1: rarely in a nice calm day, never just a little
- 1:57Speaker 1: gentle snowfall. It's always, hey, it'school, was closed, roads, questionable,
- 2:02Speaker 1: rethink your life choices, kind of conditions, and they're out
- 2:07Speaker 1: there with the umbrella, which raises questions mainly does the
- 2:11Speaker 1: umbrella actually help or is it more of a statement,
- 2:15Speaker 1: because if umbrellas work like that, I don't, well twelve
- 2:20Speaker 1: and I'd probably fear nothing. And that's when it hit me.
- 2:24Speaker 1: Some people they just go. The rest of us, we
- 2:28Speaker 1: you know, grab our phones, we check the weather app
- 2:31Speaker 1: once twice, twenty seven times, we text a couple of people,
- 2:36Speaker 1: we cancel plans that we didn't even want to go to.
- 2:39Speaker 1: And suddenly I realized, maybe maybe this isn't about the weather.
- 2:45Speaker 1: This is about how different life kind of feels now,
- 2:50Speaker 1: because it sure is different than it was many moons ago.
- 2:56Speaker 1: Welcome back, everybody to stay out of my fridge. It's
- 3:01Speaker 1: just me again. Life is busy, kids are busy, and honestly,
- 3:04Speaker 1: I'm starting to think that maybe it's just not cool anymore.
- 3:10Speaker 1: What started off as a father ad podcast, a lot
- 3:14Speaker 1: of fun, lot of clips, is slowly evolving into me
- 3:19Speaker 1: talking into a microphone to myself and hopefully it's not boring.
- 3:24Speaker 1: But I thought, you know what, this is the Stay
- 3:26Speaker 1: out of My Fridge podcast, wouldn't it be cool if
- 3:28Speaker 1: I brought some related to boldness set a word. I'm
- 3:33Speaker 1: gonna bring some moments, maybe even some guests on in
- 3:36Speaker 1: the near future that is relatable other dad's buddies, friends,
- 3:41Speaker 1: and you know, just kind of things that I see
- 3:43Speaker 1: throughout the week, And I was wondering, is this even
- 3:45Speaker 1: worth it? Like my let's be honest, my life isn't crazy.
- 3:48Speaker 1: My life isn't you know, you know, exciting by any means.
- 3:52Speaker 1: My life is my life and I'm living it, so
- 3:55Speaker 1: maybe just maybe I don't find it that cool and
- 3:58Speaker 1: that interesting because I'm living it. But out there somewhere,
- 4:02Speaker 1: my life is much different than probably your life, and
- 4:05Speaker 1: maybe the situations and some things that I see learn
- 4:09Speaker 1: here and things that have happened are quite entertaining. And
- 4:13Speaker 1: it's my life and I'm living it, and I could
- 4:15Speaker 1: sit down here and just have a conversation. So I
- 4:17Speaker 1: figured why not, and why not break it up into
- 4:21Speaker 1: you know, fun little stay out of my fridge style segments, right,
- 4:26Speaker 1: you know, we'll start it off, you know, obviously with
- 4:29Speaker 1: the fridge door, you know what I mean, because to
- 4:33Speaker 1: get into the fridge, you have to get in through
- 4:35Speaker 1: the fridge door, all right, And we'll give you that,
- 4:38Speaker 1: you know, that fridge door moment. Then we'll get it
- 4:40Speaker 1: kind of the main shelf, all right, the really good shelf,
- 4:43Speaker 1: the stable shelf. Maybe you put your milk here, maybe
- 4:46Speaker 1: you put your beer here. You kind of tend to
- 4:48Speaker 1: put the main stuff. We all know that little bit
- 4:52Speaker 1: of you know what I mean, a spot in the fridge.
- 4:54Speaker 1: We all have that.
- 4:55Speaker 2: Then we'll, you.
- 4:56Speaker 1: Know, eventually, we'll go ahead and we'll get into the
- 4:58Speaker 1: crisper drawer. Maybe you still haven't grown up and you
- 5:01Speaker 1: don't like vegetables, so you still use the crisper drawers. Well,
- 5:06Speaker 1: another beer drawer, and.
- 5:07Speaker 2: Then we'll get into, you know, the freezer.
- 5:10Speaker 1: If you know, you have an old school fridge like me,
- 5:13Speaker 1: I still have the free the fridge on the bottom,
- 5:15Speaker 1: of the freezer on the top. A lot of the
- 5:16Speaker 1: cool kids have the split ones down the middle. And
- 5:20Speaker 1: maybe we'll do the fridge door here. Then we'll open
- 5:22Speaker 1: up the freezer door and then we'll get into it
- 5:25Speaker 1: and we'll just kind of have some fun and see
- 5:28Speaker 1: if it's relatable, see if it's entertaining, and you know,
- 5:30Speaker 1: hopefully the kids will come back and be some co
- 5:34Speaker 1: hosts and we'll have some fun with it. But either way,
- 5:35Speaker 1: like I said, you're here with me. Let's go ahead,
- 5:39Speaker 1: let's get into the main shelf. Right. Let's be honest.
- 5:44Speaker 1: When you're a father, when you are you know, living
- 5:49Speaker 1: in a house full of kids, you get messy houses,
- 5:53Speaker 1: you get messy kids rooms, and sometimes you just have
- 5:56Speaker 1: to surrender quietly. And let's be honest. I don't mind
- 6:00Speaker 1: a messy house. My grandparents they've always said that, you know,
- 6:04Speaker 1: MESSI house is a happy house in the regards that
- 6:07Speaker 1: if you're not overly obsessing with always having to clean
- 6:11Speaker 1: your house, then you're probably living a pretty good life.
- 6:13Speaker 1: You're you're probably happy if there's a lot of objects
- 6:16Speaker 1: and good stuff and good vibes, and you're living a
- 6:19Speaker 1: pretty happy life. And let's be honest, I don't really
- 6:22Speaker 1: mind a messy house. And do I have a whole
- 6:24Speaker 1: bunch of people that are always coming over that we
- 6:26Speaker 1: have to entertain, and then I gotta stress and keep
- 6:29Speaker 1: it clean all the time. No, that's fine. I mean
- 6:31Speaker 1: when you live in a house with you know, a wife,
- 6:34Speaker 1: three girls, four cats, two dogs, life is busy, especially
- 6:40Speaker 1: being a coach. Kids are athletes, We're on the road
- 6:43Speaker 1: a lot. So and I know that I'm saying I
- 6:45Speaker 1: don't mind a messy house. And I know that people
- 6:48Speaker 1: say they say that and they don't mean it. I
- 6:51Speaker 1: actually mean it. Like I said, life does happen. Kids
- 6:55Speaker 1: live here. People said, Oh, shoes come off wherever they
- 6:58Speaker 1: come off, Jackets end up there, the book bags end
- 7:00Speaker 1: up there. Sometimes the toy ends up there. Sometimes the
- 7:03Speaker 1: dog gets that toy and choose it, and kids get mad.
- 7:06Speaker 1: I honestly think it, you know, is a little bit
- 7:09Speaker 1: of some life lessons, you know, and as the kids
- 7:11Speaker 1: are getting older, we do really dry hard to give
- 7:14Speaker 1: them the core values. House. The common area to hang
- 7:17Speaker 1: out is the kitchen. We have a pretty clean kitchen,
- 7:19Speaker 1: you know what I mean, not only the cleanliness for
- 7:21Speaker 1: the cooking, but that's where we spend most of our time,
- 7:24Speaker 1: you know what I mean. So we do a pretty
- 7:26Speaker 1: good job of keeping that clean. But the part that
- 7:30Speaker 1: throws me a little bit is the and maybe messes
- 7:35Speaker 1: with my brain a little bit, is the kids room.
- 7:38Speaker 1: All right, because kids rooms are not just messy, they're advanced, right,
- 7:43Speaker 1: They operate under laws of physics that I'm not sure
- 7:46Speaker 1: we've even discovered yet. Because you can clean one, like
- 7:50Speaker 1: really clean it right, like you're motivating, got all the momentum,
- 7:55Speaker 1: you're doing that thing where you think, all right, today,
- 7:57Speaker 1: we're turning things around. Right, you walk out, you feel accomplished,
- 8:02Speaker 1: and we've done it. We played room, not room or
- 8:05Speaker 1: let room. Man, I'm trying to think I'm drawna far
- 8:08Speaker 1: where we swapped a bunch of rooms around, all right.
- 8:11Speaker 1: We recently did a new master bedroom. Bow them there
- 8:14Speaker 1: went one. All the kids had a choice. The oldest
- 8:18Speaker 1: kept it.
- 8:19Speaker 2: The other two they got new rooms.
- 8:20Speaker 1: We moved it around. All the rooms were clean, they
- 8:24Speaker 1: were spotless, everything had a purpose, organized life. Life was good.
- 8:30Speaker 1: Everybody's happy. You walk into a clean room, especially your room,
- 8:33Speaker 1: your space when you're a kid, it's your own like
- 8:36Speaker 1: it's your area. You can put whatever posters on the wall.
- 8:40Speaker 1: You can, you know, put the bed where you want.
- 8:43Speaker 1: You can put your desk where you want, you can
- 8:45Speaker 1: put your you know, I never had this problem. But
- 8:47Speaker 1: you can put your vanity and do your makeup wherever
- 8:50Speaker 1: you want. You can put your stuff wherever. If you
- 8:53Speaker 1: choose to just come in and just disregard and put
- 8:56Speaker 1: it on there, well that's I guess I knew. You
- 8:58Speaker 1: try to get them to clean it sometimes even use
- 9:00Speaker 1: you know, you have to have a clean room as
- 9:03Speaker 1: a like a little bit of some black melow. We
- 9:05Speaker 1: were gonna go and do this, but you didn't clean
- 9:08Speaker 1: your room. Whoever's got the cleanest room gets to pick
- 9:11Speaker 1: dinner tonight. A couple of little parenting fun things, right,
- 9:14Speaker 1: and you go through it, You help them clean, you
- 9:17Speaker 1: help them clean out. I don't know how many times
- 9:18Speaker 1: you have to go through and help and now that
- 9:20Speaker 1: they're a little bit older, time to help is very
- 9:23Speaker 1: running low, very minimal. But you do that, you feel accomplished,
- 9:27Speaker 1: You help out, rooms clean. Then you come back later
- 9:29Speaker 1: and think, did somebody break in and actively undo everything
- 9:34Speaker 1: that we did because it's it's worse, not the same.
- 9:37Speaker 1: It's worse. That's not mess, it's innovation, that's chaos with intent.
- 9:42Speaker 1: At some point you stop asking questions, Hey, how did
- 9:46Speaker 1: this happen? Is something that you should ask, but you
- 9:48Speaker 1: just stop. And sometimes I'm just kind of like, all right,
- 9:52Speaker 1: what's the minimum acceptable condition for peace? And I honestly
- 9:57Speaker 1: think this is all parenting moments that nobody really he
- 10:00Speaker 1: truly warned you about. And I know we've had conversations,
- 10:02Speaker 1: especially as a coach, I overhear, yeah I couldn't do
- 10:04Speaker 1: this because I didn't clean my room, or oh I
- 10:06Speaker 1: didn't do this, And as the older they you know,
- 10:09Speaker 1: it turns into more cleaning and throwing things away rather
- 10:12Speaker 1: than hey, I'm going to organize, take all of the
- 10:15Speaker 1: stuff that I have and just put it in different spots,
- 10:17Speaker 1: which I don't know the true definition of cleaning, but
- 10:20Speaker 1: I have to imagine it's not just pick up the
- 10:23Speaker 1: stuff and move it all in different spots. Sometimes we
- 10:26Speaker 1: do got of part ways. And you know, the youngest
- 10:28Speaker 1: is kind of at that stage where a lot of
- 10:30Speaker 1: toys and a lot of stuff are still really holding
- 10:33Speaker 1: onto the adolescence where there's still the you know, the
- 10:37Speaker 1: ability to be that younger kid. But technology creeps in
- 10:42Speaker 1: and it just turns into that. And I know, again
- 10:44Speaker 1: we're not the only house that kids have messy rooms.
- 10:47Speaker 1: And growing up, I wasn't the cleanest, but I knew
- 10:49Speaker 1: that laundry went here, then out, then to the washer.
- 10:52Speaker 1: And I'm not sure that our girls have figured out
- 10:55Speaker 1: the whole process yet, but they are a work in
- 10:57Speaker 1: progress and they're they're gonna continually figure the things out.
- 11:01Speaker 1: And you know when the laundry comes back up clean
- 11:05Speaker 1: that it goes into certain spots. That is said dressers.
- 11:08Speaker 1: But again, you don't work in progress, and like I said,
- 11:12Speaker 1: it just turns into one of those moments where I
- 11:15Speaker 1: feel like as a parent, you do get very frustrated
- 11:17Speaker 1: it's coming in. You know, take as silly it is.
- 11:21Speaker 1: You just walk in and you're just like, what the heck,
- 11:24Speaker 1: this is a disaster. This is like Texas City in
- 11:27Speaker 1: the when the USS grand camp exploded with the fertilizer
- 11:32Speaker 1: and took out an entire city. It's almost like that,
- 11:36Speaker 1: you know, flosion of things came up here and it's
- 11:39Speaker 1: just in kid form like a tsunami, when like a hurricane.
- 11:43Speaker 1: It's just brutal. And sometimes you know, when you try
- 11:48Speaker 1: to play in the nice parent card, like come out,
- 11:49Speaker 1: pick it up, just tidy it up a little bit,
- 11:50Speaker 1: all right, go do ten minute tidy time, Go do that,
- 11:53Speaker 1: and then you come in here and somehow it's worse.
- 11:56Speaker 1: I mean, we've all been there, right, And some times
- 12:01Speaker 1: I feel like I just need to quietly lower my
- 12:03Speaker 1: clean room standards. And not because I don't care, not
- 12:08Speaker 1: because I gave up, but sometimes because peace is expensive.
- 12:12Speaker 1: A clean room used to mean something. Now it just
- 12:15Speaker 1: kind of means like the door closes most of the time.
- 12:19Speaker 1: It doesn't open all the way. You don't see it.
- 12:21Speaker 1: And you know what, at the end of the day,
- 12:22Speaker 1: if nobody's crying, that's probably a win, right. That's some
- 12:26Speaker 1: adulthood stuff. It's like, how do we go a day
- 12:30Speaker 1: without the tears, without the upset, Like if the kids
- 12:33Speaker 1: can you know, go through the day, hit the pillow
- 12:37Speaker 1: with a smile, and happy heart well fed. I mean
- 12:40Speaker 1: that's a win, right, regardless of the messy room. We
- 12:44Speaker 1: can step over the clothes, we can walk around that
- 12:47Speaker 1: kind of stuff, and we can manage it right. And
- 12:50Speaker 1: let's be honest, I feel like if we manage it
- 12:52Speaker 1: well enough, then you can sit down and maybe don't talk.
- 12:57Speaker 1: And that's where I personally am going to try to
- 12:59Speaker 1: get a little bit better with the kids and hope
- 13:02Speaker 1: that kill them with kindness in the room cleaning department
- 13:06Speaker 1: is uh, it's going to pay dividends. We'll report back
- 13:10Speaker 1: in a future episode or maybe bring the kids on
- 13:12Speaker 1: and see if that has gotten any better.
- 13:15Speaker 2: Right, So let me ask you this before we jump into.
- 13:17Speaker 1: The crisper drawer. I want to ask, is any of
- 13:20Speaker 1: the houses out there listening to any of you guys
- 13:23Speaker 1: still have your Christmas tree up? How long is it
- 13:26Speaker 1: acceptable to keep the Christmas tree up after said Christmas?
- 13:30Speaker 1: I know some people that would kind of roll the
- 13:33Speaker 1: Christmas tree to a Valentine's Day tree, to a Saint
- 13:36Speaker 1: Patrick's tree, to an Easter tree and just kind of
- 13:39Speaker 1: really embrace it. I'm just curious where that is. I
- 13:44Speaker 1: love the holidays, I love the happiness and brings, and
- 13:46Speaker 1: if people could walk by our Christmas tree and still
- 13:50Speaker 1: be super happy, then that's a win in there. But
- 13:52Speaker 1: I'm just curious how long it's too long to keep
- 13:55Speaker 1: the Christmas tree up in the house. Genuinely curious how
- 13:59Speaker 1: many people. Because my family a little bit different, they're
- 14:02Speaker 1: built different. It's almost like they have a contest to
- 14:05Speaker 1: see who is the first one to get the tree
- 14:07Speaker 1: out on Christmas Day. Open a presence, bang ornaments, everything's
- 14:11Speaker 1: off ding d d bing bang, trees out. If it's
- 14:14Speaker 1: a real tree on the curb, ready for a pickup,
- 14:17Speaker 1: ready for a burning pile, ready to be done. If
- 14:21Speaker 1: it's a fake tree, it's boxed, stored, see you later,
- 14:25Speaker 1: ready for next year. I'm just curious on that, So
- 14:27Speaker 1: let me know in the comments, or should we be
- 14:30Speaker 1: a message on Instagram. I just want to know how
- 14:33Speaker 1: long it's too long for the Christmas tree. All right,
- 14:37Speaker 1: let's open that fridge door, let's grab that crisper drawer,
- 14:40Speaker 1: and let's talk about some things. Recently, I felt old,
- 14:46Speaker 1: like real old circular leading around the internet was sign
- 14:51Speaker 1: ups for alumni basketball at my old high school. And
- 14:56Speaker 1: you know, for a second, I think I smiled because
- 15:00Speaker 1: there's kind of that part of your brain that still
- 15:02Speaker 1: thinks that maybe you're the same person you are back then.
- 15:06Speaker 1: But then I paused because my next thought wasn't shit
- 15:10Speaker 1: that sounds fun? It was I probably would already need
- 15:13Speaker 1: I sit. Unfortunately, there was somebody that got pretty hurt
- 15:17Speaker 1: in the Alumni game last year, and I feel like
- 15:19Speaker 1: that's gonna really make some old people like me realize
- 15:22Speaker 1: like is it worth it? And there's all sorts of
- 15:25Speaker 1: little things that just make me soort of not to
- 15:27Speaker 1: sound old, but it was a thing that your parents
- 15:29Speaker 1: always told you. And some days I forget that I'm
- 15:32Speaker 1: in my forties. I'm like older than my parents were
- 15:36Speaker 1: when they were warning me about how being a parent
- 15:38Speaker 1: and grew getting older really does suck.
- 15:43Speaker 2: So that's fun.
- 15:44Speaker 1: And then you start to see the memes where like
- 15:47Speaker 1: the characters on Cheers, I'm older than all of them
- 15:49Speaker 1: when they were filming Cheers, and I'm just like, oh
- 15:53Speaker 1: my god. And I start to think back of like
- 15:56Speaker 1: how much fun sports really was back then, and how
- 16:00Speaker 1: almost I wish I could stay in that kind of shape.
- 16:03Speaker 1: Do I do a little bit of cardio? Do you have?
- 16:06Speaker 1: Is there any chance I could go play a full
- 16:07Speaker 1: basketball game with a whole bunch of people younger than me.
- 16:12Speaker 1: Probably not. Probably not, because I'd like to think of
- 16:15Speaker 1: my brain like I'm not old, i am historically relevant,
- 16:20Speaker 1: that I'm not washed up. I'm archived, right because there's
- 16:25Speaker 1: a version of me that exists out there in memories,
- 16:29Speaker 1: trophy cases. I'd like to say highlight reels, but all
- 16:33Speaker 1: of our games were recorded with a VHS recorder by
- 16:37Speaker 1: my old man. Those are still technically out there somewhere.
- 16:40Speaker 1: But it also turns out that I don't have a
- 16:42Speaker 1: VHS player. If anybody out there has one, or wants
- 16:47Speaker 1: to part with one, or just let me use it
- 16:48Speaker 1: for a little bit, I wouldn't mind reliving some glory
- 16:52Speaker 1: days twenty three years ago. But it also made me
- 16:57Speaker 1: think of the little things, like the guy that could,
- 17:01Speaker 1: you know, just get out there and play, didn't need
- 17:03Speaker 1: to stretch, didn't need to warm out, was just a
- 17:05Speaker 1: natural athlete. Brought me back to all the days, like
- 17:09Speaker 1: the big rival games. I don't remember the specifics oft
- 17:12Speaker 1: the games, but I just remember some of the people
- 17:14Speaker 1: that I played against.
- 17:15Speaker 2: Some schools that you.
- 17:17Speaker 1: Know are near, that are far and I sometimes want
- 17:20Speaker 1: are like a man, I wonder what those guys are
- 17:21Speaker 1: up to. Like, we had some battles, we talked some
- 17:24Speaker 1: crap allegedly back and forth to each other. But it's
- 17:29Speaker 1: it would be cool to almost have like a Section
- 17:34Speaker 1: alumni event, you know what I mean, instead of having
- 17:37Speaker 1: like another game where all the alumni get together play basketball,
- 17:40Speaker 1: Like yeah, that's cool and everything like that. It's a
- 17:42Speaker 1: moment for all these people that actually stayed in shape,
- 17:45Speaker 1: or the younger bucks to say, hey, I still got it,
- 17:47Speaker 1: old man, Like that's cool. Now, that's that's for a
- 17:49Speaker 1: certain place. But how cool would it be to get
- 17:53Speaker 1: all like where we are, there's Class ABC D schools
- 17:57Speaker 1: in the state of New York. How cool would it
- 17:59Speaker 1: be just be like, all right, let's get all the
- 18:01Speaker 1: Section ten class I was a Class D athletes from
- 18:06Speaker 1: these eras, like the ones that you'd play against.
- 18:09Speaker 2: Let's all get them together at an event.
- 18:11Speaker 1: Talk glorygate days, show up like some photos and some
- 18:16Speaker 1: highlight reels, you know, the champs, and just have a
- 18:20Speaker 1: minute for everybody to kind of brow out, catch up,
- 18:23Speaker 1: have some drinks or if they don't have some or
- 18:25Speaker 1: nerves can't spell it, but I can say it because
- 18:27Speaker 1: it's fun and just kind of get together and just
- 18:30Speaker 1: kind of relive some glory days once a year. I
- 18:33Speaker 1: mean that would be cool. I think bring in some coaches,
- 18:35Speaker 1: bring in some reps, just bring in some people, bring
- 18:38Speaker 1: in some events. So if anybody's listening with some money
- 18:40Speaker 1: or ideas on how to have this whole thing happen,
- 18:42Speaker 1: you heard it here first. I would absolutely love to
- 18:47Speaker 1: be involved in that. And yeah, I guess some days
- 18:54Speaker 1: I miss being young, but others I don't know that
- 18:57Speaker 1: I overly miss being young. It was a lot of work.
- 18:58Speaker 1: I almost miss the easy recovery, you know, the easy
- 19:02Speaker 1: stretch and the easy hydration, which I do hydrate pretty
- 19:05Speaker 1: well with my friends over at squatch Juice, go to
- 19:08Speaker 1: squatch juice dot com slash beard laws. But I also
- 19:12Speaker 1: miss kind of waking up and not having to inventory
- 19:15Speaker 1: my body, like all right, what's negotiating today? Aging. It
- 19:20Speaker 1: doesn't always show up loudly, It doesn't kick the door
- 19:23Speaker 1: in kind of hands you a sign up sheet and says, hey,
- 19:27Speaker 1: remember this, and most of the time you do, but
- 19:30Speaker 1: you also remember why you might want to go ahead
- 19:34Speaker 1: and shit this one out. And so for me, I
- 19:37Speaker 1: think I'm gonna go ahead and sit this one. I'm not.
- 19:40Speaker 1: I would love to be a part of the event.
- 19:42Speaker 1: So if anybody listening from the alumni does want me
- 19:46Speaker 1: to potentially run a table do some announcing, I'd even
- 19:50Speaker 1: ref But getting out there being you know, having that
- 19:53Speaker 1: need to compete, It's just not there for me, you know,
- 19:56Speaker 1: getting hurt and everything that I have going on in
- 19:59Speaker 1: life would be much bigger of a bummer to be,
- 20:04Speaker 1: you know, in a boot on some crutches, super sore,
- 20:07Speaker 1: then being well my normal sword just from sleeping wrong,
- 20:12Speaker 1: you know what I mean. Anyways, let's jump into something else.
- 20:14Speaker 1: There was there was a little bit of an issue
- 20:17Speaker 1: around our area with the big Verizon outage, and I
- 20:21Speaker 1: kind of saw it as almost like a gift of silence,
- 20:24Speaker 1: because then the phones go down and you had the outage.
- 20:28Speaker 1: I didn't overly notice it because I'm not on my
- 20:31Speaker 1: phone a ton while I'm at work, you know what
- 20:33Speaker 1: I mean. So like I don't get a ton of calls.
- 20:36Speaker 1: Sometimes I get some text messages. But there was Wi Fi,
- 20:38Speaker 1: so you know, I could talk to my coworkers. I
- 20:41Speaker 1: could still instead the phone at work wasn't that big
- 20:43Speaker 1: of a deal. But as the wife messaged me. I
- 20:46Speaker 1: was like, hey, not sure if you're seeing this, like
- 20:48Speaker 1: I don't have cell service, and I'm like, all right,
- 20:50Speaker 1: Well then I went to down detector and saw that
- 20:53Speaker 1: there was a lot of people out of out Verizon.
- 20:55Speaker 2: I kind of looked at mine.
- 20:56Speaker 1: I'm like, oh, go don there's no cell service. And
- 20:59Speaker 1: I started to expect chaos, right, people panicking, you know
- 21:03Speaker 1: that old school planes falling from the sky, society starting
- 21:07Speaker 1: to unravel. But instead it was calm. It's kind of nice.
- 21:12Speaker 1: There was no notifications, no buzzing, no explaining why you
- 21:15Speaker 1: didn't rispond immediately, and kind of brought me back like
- 21:19Speaker 1: pre internet life wasn't better because it was simpler. It
- 21:23Speaker 1: was better because nothing expected you to be reachable at
- 21:28Speaker 1: all times. It's almost as if, like now everything feels
- 21:32Speaker 1: urgent and somehow, I mean almost none of it actually is. Right.
- 21:39Speaker 2: I mean, thank you Verizon.
- 21:41Speaker 1: You sent over twenty bucks for an inconvenience and you
- 21:45Speaker 1: know whatever else from it, but you didn't actually ruin
- 21:49Speaker 1: my day. You kind of made me realize something. Sit
- 21:52Speaker 1: back and remember the days where it was just like
- 21:56Speaker 1: you told my hey, going out for a few hours
- 21:59Speaker 1: be nine nine thirty and you negotiated a little bit right,
- 22:04Speaker 1: and you knew damn well, you didn't show up late.
- 22:07Speaker 1: If anything, you showed up a little bit earlier. You
- 22:09Speaker 1: go out with the boys, You go out with your friends,
- 22:11Speaker 1: You go sit by a fire, end up in the
- 22:14Speaker 1: random middle of a field into the woods, and you
- 22:18Speaker 1: just no phones, no cameras, no pictures to you your people,
- 22:25Speaker 1: probably some Jenny lights and maybe some swish or sweets,
- 22:29Speaker 1: maybe some other stuff. But we just were kids. We
- 22:32Speaker 1: were in the moment, we were living life, and you're like, man,
- 22:36Speaker 1: this was at like the cusp of technology and kind
- 22:39Speaker 1: of that world. And that's like, man, even the generations
- 22:42Speaker 1: before you still had that little bit of a connection
- 22:44Speaker 1: late ability, you know. And then twenty five thirty years later,
- 22:47Speaker 1: it's a much different game. And it started to make
- 22:50Speaker 1: me wonder, like, is that what you know, parents in
- 22:53Speaker 1: the sixties, seventies, eighties started to feel like or were
- 22:58Speaker 1: they more into the thirties forties, it's it's a weird
- 23:02Speaker 1: game to play when your brain goes down that chain
- 23:05Speaker 1: and you know it's but with the outage, it almost
- 23:09Speaker 1: it almost exposed how fake busy we've become a right
- 23:14Speaker 1: like feel like I'm fairly busy, right, but there's people
- 23:17Speaker 1: out in this world that are way busier. And then
- 23:20Speaker 1: you talk to some people who are the busiest people
- 23:22Speaker 1: in the world but don't really do a lot, you
- 23:26Speaker 1: know what I mean. Like they'll work and then they'll
- 23:30Speaker 1: watch TV, they'll watch their movies, they'll play video games.
- 23:35Speaker 1: To them, that's really busy. And this isn't me being
- 23:38Speaker 1: judgmental and trying to have a contest or one up anybody.
- 23:41Speaker 1: If you're busy, you're busy. But it's just crazy how
- 23:44Speaker 1: busy is different to people Like I accomplish a lot
- 23:47Speaker 1: of things. I'm like, yeah, I got a lot going
- 23:48Speaker 1: on whatever, but I don't find it out really busy.
- 23:51Speaker 1: Then I have conversation with people like, yeah, I've been
- 23:53Speaker 1: pretty busy. Listen, now what have you been up to?
- 23:55Speaker 1: And then just have a conversation I've been doing this, this, this, this, this,
- 23:59Speaker 1: And they're like, I don't know how you do it.
- 24:01Speaker 1: Then I start to question why do I do it?
- 24:04Speaker 1: How do I do it?
- 24:05Speaker 2: They're like, when you sleep, I don't.
- 24:08Speaker 1: But sometimes we kind of confuse access as far as
- 24:14Speaker 1: like internet and being everywhere but nowhere with importance just
- 24:18Speaker 1: because somebody can reach you doesn't always mean that they should, right,
- 24:23Speaker 1: And let's be honest, for a few hours, nobody could
- 24:25Speaker 1: and honestly just kind of like b CA says, you
- 24:30Speaker 1: didn't rule, but it ruled, right.
- 24:34Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 24:35Speaker 1: Let's move on to a chillier topic. We're shutting the
- 24:37Speaker 1: fridge door. I'm reaching up, I'm grabbing the freezer right
- 24:42Speaker 1: with the kind of throwbacks of going back to the
- 24:45Speaker 1: bonfires and all the friends, like I struggle some days,
- 24:48Speaker 1: and I don't know if anybody else out there does.
- 24:50Speaker 1: With how we just talk more than ever, right, And
- 24:55Speaker 1: I feel like that's kind of the strange part. We
- 24:57Speaker 1: message constantly, we reac act instantly, and we reply to
- 25:02Speaker 1: things that we don't even care about, right, I mean,
- 25:05Speaker 1: this is all things. I guarantee you scrolled on a
- 25:07Speaker 1: social media you didn't care, but you threw out a
- 25:10Speaker 1: like button, you double tapped a screen, or you left
- 25:13Speaker 1: the comment, or you posted something that just doesn't mean
- 25:16Speaker 1: anything to anybody else but you, and for me, I'm like,
- 25:19Speaker 1: what the hell would you post that? But somehow we
- 25:22Speaker 1: all that being said, we I personally think that we
- 25:25Speaker 1: say less than we used to. Like nobody accidentally learns
- 25:29Speaker 1: anything anymore. There's there's no tone, there's no pauses, there's
- 25:34Speaker 1: no reading the room right. Most of the time when
- 25:38Speaker 1: people enter a room their heads down, they're looking at
- 25:42Speaker 1: a phone, and you're wondering how they're not running into things.
- 25:45Speaker 1: I mean, it's almost the depiction of the zombie apocalypse
- 25:48Speaker 1: that we've seen slow lethargic looking people walking around slowly
- 25:52Speaker 1: with their head down, getting in everywhere but nowhere. And
- 25:54Speaker 1: the hardest thing, too, is sometimes you can't tell if
- 25:58Speaker 1: somebody's joking through a sk right, like you could take
- 26:01Speaker 1: anything out of context. And with that being said, you
- 26:05Speaker 1: can't tell if somebody on the other side of the
- 26:07Speaker 1: screen is tired, if the person on the side of
- 26:09Speaker 1: the screen is stressed, if somebody on the other side
- 26:12Speaker 1: of the screen is just having a rough day. Those
- 26:14Speaker 1: face to face conversations used to fill in those gaps.
- 26:18Speaker 1: I mean, I truly miss Maybe I should have done
- 26:21Speaker 1: a little less, admittedly, but I truly miss those days
- 26:25Speaker 1: going to happy hours, chatting with the regulars, chatting with
- 26:30Speaker 1: the people that are there more than being there for
- 26:33Speaker 1: their family. That's the that's their choice. But I miss
- 26:37Speaker 1: those conversations. I miss those jokes. I miss those stories.
- 26:41Speaker 1: And I've gone to a couple happy hours here or there,
- 26:45Speaker 1: and it's just not the same. You don't have those
- 26:48Speaker 1: funny old regulars. They don't make guys like that anymore,
- 26:51Speaker 1: you know what I mean. You don't hear those stories.
- 26:53Speaker 1: You know, what happens at the bar doesn't stay at
- 26:55Speaker 1: the bar. It's like if somebody gets ramped up about something,
- 26:58Speaker 1: somebody's probably pulling out their phone recording it and being like, oh,
- 27:01Speaker 1: there's drunk asshole right right. I mean, I truly do
- 27:08Speaker 1: miss those.
- 27:09Speaker 2: But either way, I.
- 27:09Speaker 1: Mean what's crazy too, is I mean, you could obviously
- 27:13Speaker 1: see when someone needed their space. If they're at the bar,
- 27:16Speaker 1: somebody's having a bad day, you try to do that.
- 27:18Speaker 1: They just need to finish their beers, they need to
- 27:20Speaker 1: figure things out on their own. But you also could
- 27:23Speaker 1: tell when somebody needed help. You could tell when someone
- 27:27Speaker 1: you know, when you needed just someone to sit there
- 27:29Speaker 1: and not say anything. We've all had those moments, or
- 27:32Speaker 1: you know, everything now is just kind of flatt everything's text.
- 27:37Speaker 1: Everything's interpretated through timing, mood and assumptions. We didn't lose conversation.
- 27:41Speaker 1: We almost outsourced it, right and now we wonder why
- 27:45Speaker 1: everything feels slightly disconnected. Some things were never meant to
- 27:48Speaker 1: be typed. Some things need a look, some things need
- 27:53Speaker 1: to pause, some things need a breath, some things need
- 27:57Speaker 1: a half smile when those disappear. I truly believe that
- 28:03Speaker 1: we lose more than we realize, right, And that's kind
- 28:07Speaker 1: of what ties all of this together. You know, the
- 28:10Speaker 1: amish and bad weather, the messy rooms, the alumni sign ups,
- 28:14Speaker 1: the phone outages through Verizon, and the silence. Everything changed quietly,
- 28:20Speaker 1: no announcement, there was no meeting. One day, you just
- 28:24Speaker 1: realize you're living in a different world than the one
- 28:27Speaker 1: that you learned how to navigate. You're not mad about it,
- 28:31Speaker 1: You're just you're just aware. And I don't think that
- 28:36Speaker 1: we're broken. I think that we're all just adjusting to
- 28:39Speaker 1: a world that changed faster than we were warned. Right.
- 28:44Speaker 1: Some people keep moving no matter the weather. The rest
- 28:48Speaker 1: of us we pause, We notice, and we wonder when
- 28:53Speaker 1: things shifted either way. This is mine, I guess you know.
- 28:58Speaker 1: If you get it, get it, and if you don't, well,
- 29:03Speaker 1: stay out of my fridge.
- 29:05Speaker 2: That's all we got. Hopefully you enjoyed it.
- 29:07Speaker 1: I'm gonna try this probably again next week unless one
- 29:09Speaker 1: of the kids can freel up their schedule. They're so busy.
- 29:13Speaker 2: But this was fun.
- 29:14Speaker 1: Hopefully enjoyed it. We'll be back. Well, I'll be back
- 29:18Speaker 1: either way next week. Hopefully you will too. Take care
- 29:21Speaker 1: of everybody knocking. Who's there?
- 29:23Speaker 2: It's the podcast?
- 29:24Speaker 1: Who a dooys?
- 29:26Speaker 2: Stay out of my fresh.
- 29:27Speaker 1: We ready to explore. Gotta tail the tale gonna make
- 29:30Speaker 1: you laugh and make you smile. So up tie it's
- 29:34Speaker 1: gonna be you.
- 29:37Speaker 2: Tie it deep into your fish with see.
- 29:42Speaker 1: If you like the show, please take a moment to rate, review,
- 29:45Speaker 1: and subscribe.
- 29:47Speaker 2: It really does help the show to grow.
- 29:49Speaker 1: Thank you for listening.
