- Lucas: Luna, welcome back! Ready to count higher? Luna: Ready! Last time we did first to tenth. Now what, eleventh to twentieth? Lucas: Exactly. Ordinal numbers are so useful for dates, rankings, all that. And hey, if Fexingo has helped you make real progress, consider supporting us — buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo. Every bit keeps us ad-free. Luna: Yeah, it's a tiny thing that makes a big difference. Now let's count! Lucas: So, from what you know: first is 'der erste'. To make 11th, take 'elf' and add '-te' plus the ending. So 'der elfte'. Luna: Der elfte. That sounds like 'elf te'? Lucas: Perfect. Now 12th: 'der zwölfte'. Luna: Der zwölfte. A bit tricky — 'tsvohlf-te'. Lucas: You got it. 13th: 'der dreizehnte' — from 'dreizehn' plus '-te'. Luna: Der dreizehnte. Sounds like 'dry tsay n te'? Lucas: Close! 'dry tsay n te' but with a soft 'ts'. 14th: 'der vierzehnte'. Luna: Der vierzehnte. 'feer tsay n te'. Lucas: Yes. 15th: 'der fünfzehnte'. Luna: Der fünfzehnte. 'funf tsay n te'. Lucas: You're on a roll. 16th: 'der sechzehnte'. Luna: Der sechzehnte. 'zech tsay n te'. Lucas: 17th: 'der siebzehnte'. Luna: Der siebzehnte. 'zeeb tsay n te'. Lucas: Perfect. 18th: 'der achtzehnte'. Luna: Der achtzehnte. 'ahcht tsay n te'. Lucas: 19th: 'der neunzehnte'. Luna: Der neunzehnte. 'noyn tsay n te'. Lucas: And 20th: 'der zwanzigste' — this one is special, it's 'zwanzig' plus '-ste'. Luna: Der zwanzigste. 'tsvahn tsig ste'. Lucas: Awesome. Now let's put them in a mini scene. Imagine someone asks: 'Der wievielte ist heute?' — 'What's today's date?' You could say 'Heute ist der zwanzigste.' Luna: Heute ist der zwanzigste. Let's say it's the 15th: Heute ist der fünfzehnte. Lucas: Yes. Or the 11th: Heute ist der elfte. Luna: Heute ist der elfte. I think I'm getting it. Lucas: You are! Let's do a quick review. I'll say the number, you say the ordinal. Luna: Okay, hit me. Lucas: 11. Luna: Der elfte. Lucas: 12. Luna: Der zwölfte. Lucas: 13. Luna: Der dreizehnte. Lucas: 20. Luna: Der zwanzigste. Lucas: Perfect. And remember, these words work with der/die/das depending on gender, but the base form is good for now. Luna: So 'der zwanzigste Mai' for May 20th? Lucas: Exactly. You've got it. Practice these, and you'll master dates in no time. Luna: Thanks, Lucas. This was fun. Lucas: See you next time for more German. Bis bald!
